Ranking JoJo Minor Antagonists, 1-4
Shamelessly inspired by @uppertwist, this'll be long, so be warned
I'll rank other things if asked :3
Phantom Blood
Bruford: Doesn't do all that much honestly, but his design's pretty funky and in retrospect I'm like 75% sure he's got a stand. 7/10
Tarkus: His size is even stranger than Polpo honestly, but I guess it fits with the song being 20 MINUTES LONG. 4/10
Dario: Does he even count? Anyway he was an asshole, & main reason I liked Dio in part 1. 1/10
Wang Chan: My mom burst out laughing when she heard his name so he gets bumped up. 2/10
Random Led Zeppelin Zombies: These guys got their names changed??? 3/10 for comedy
Doobie: 10/10 Doobie is perfect in every way. Snake.
Battle Tendency
Str*heim: die die die die die die die die die get killed by fish die negative infinity/10
Santana: Wonderful guy. We barely learned shit about him but his episodes are so fun. I both wish he'd come back and hope he stays petrified forever. 8/10
Donovan: First dude to really fit into the "worse than the reference" category. Also they changed it to Donobang??? Ew. 4/10
Straizo: Him ranting about Dio vampiring wrong is funny I guess. 6/10
Stardust Crusaders
Gray Fly: Legitimately forgot this lame old man. 2/10
Imposter Captain Tennille: He drove, a boat? Honestly Captain Dragon was a way cooler name. 3/10
Forever: Please just, no. -10/10
Devo the Cursed: ARE WE NOT MEN? WE ARE DEVO. ARE WE NOT MEN? D-E-V-O. (Araki please reference DEVO again) 8/10
Rubber Soul: I like him on principle BUT he created that stupid cherry meme. 6/10
J. Ge*l: Read Forever's entry. -100/10
Hol Horse: This man is genuinely amazing. The instant I saw him my Trigun brain went batshit. Everything about him just makes him funnier. 10/10
Nena: Uhhhh she's a girlboss? I don't remember much about her to be honest. 5/10
ZZ: Car. 3/10
Enya the Hag: Way too funny for a murderous old lady who supports her serial killer son. 6/10
Steely Dan: He's a Kevin. 9/10
Arabia Fats: Amazing. 7/10
Mannish Boy: Is it even legal to rank an infant?? Also if JoJo used literary refs instead he'd probably be called "The Small Assassin" (Ray Bradbury story) 7/10
Cameo: He's okay I guess. 5/10
Midler: Her stand's funky but she's just eh. 5/10
N'Doul: He's the vibe check, he's cool. 8.5/10, too much water
OINGO BOINGO BROTHERS: DO I EVEN NEED TO EXPLAIN??? IF I DO, I FEEL BAD FOR YOU, POOR SOUL. INFINITY/10
Chaka + Khan: They're nice :) 6/10
Mariah: Wish she had more personality traits besides literally being attractive. 7/10
Al*ssi: He looks like Spinel from Steven Universe. Don't lie, you know I'm right. 0/10
Daniel J. D'arby: He has a first name??? Anyways, he's pretty cool. His arc's really fun, and his stand is green. An ugly green, but he's Osiris, so at least it's green. 7.5/10
Pet Shop: Murderous falcon. How could you hate him? 9/10
Telence T. D'arby: Gamer with a weird barn owl stand. 7/10
Kenny G: Loser. Also, Tenor Sax? You can't have an instrument as your stand, bitca. 2/10
Nukesaku: Why is he the loser when Kenny G is right there???? 4/10
Vanilla Ice: I heard his name before I got to the fight and I laughed my ass off. Now I know better. Also his leotard looks stupid. 3/10
Diamond is Unbreakable
"Angelo": Re. J. Geil. -20/10
Keicho Nijimura: I mean, he was an asshole for sure, but you can understand why. He's good. Also, in his three episodes, he doesn't leave his house??? Ahead of the time. 7/10 (bc Okuyasu)
Tamami: He's there? 5/10
Hazamada: Xander Harris But Worse. And with belts. 5.5/10
Akira Otoishi: He's trash, but like, a really fun trash. And his design is sick. RHCP is ugly, but we aren't talking about stands, now are we? 7/10
Bug-Eaten & Not Bug-Eaten: ṛ̶̫͔̝͈͕̟̠͖͙̅̌͒̍̄̉̈̕̕a̶̡̨̧̨̫̰̹̝̘͇̩̩͇̍̂͐̍͐̂̏̈́̐̐̈́͜͝͠ͅţ̸̨͎̥͇͔͕̣̘̜̍̿̔͌͒́́̍̂̅̎̄̓̓͘͜͝.̶̡̧̼͇̬̤̳̹̺̪̟̺͈̣̭̣̞͈͈͕̳̆͒͋͋̈́̔͌̎̉͋͆͑̊̋̈͒̒͘͝ 7/10
Yoshihiro Kira: Enya but not funny. 5/10
Ken Oyanagi (Janken Kid): He's literally a dumbass middle schooler. I'm half-convinced he only fought Rohan because they both had silly headbands and they needed to figure out who was superior. 7/10
Yuya Fungami: He's funky honestly. That stupid bowtie is amazing. (This is a Yoshie, Reiko, & Akemi stan account btw) 8/10
Toyohiro: I was worried when I saw the butterfly and spider pins, but he's fun. I wish we got to see him more. 6/10
Masazo Kinoto (Cheap Trick's user): Sorry you died?? 2/10
Terunosuke Miyamoto: LOOK AT HIS COAT IT'S SO AMAZING 10/10
(Bonus) Yukako Yamagishi: You had so much potential Araki >:( 9/10

hi!! :-) for the character ask game could you please do Kakyoin or rohan?
Yes! Under the cut for length
Kakyoin:
Why I  like them- I like Kakyoin because there’s something so wholesome about helping someone you Just met because they risked their life to save yours. Kakyoin is really smart and keeps super calm under pressure, his death is so sad but being able to figure out Dio’s ability That quickly and while dying is pretty impressive. I really like Hierophant Green as a stand overall and Kakyoin is really pretty.
Favorite episode- Death 13 arc, Baby Stand jokes aside Kakyoin proving to everyone
Favorite line- I really think the mirror match dialogue for Kakyoin is super funny. “My name is Noriaki Kakyoin.” “No need to say it twice.”
Favorite outfit- Unfortunately Kakyoin only has like 3 outfits but I really think his pink and white striped pajamas are really
OTP- Jotaro, I know this is pretty basic and people Don’t have to like them together since they don’t get to spend a lot of time together. But there’s a lot of potential here. I wrote a one-shot of them that I may or may not expand on depending if people are interested in seeing that one shot     made to be multichapter.
Brotp- Polnareff, these idiots get along really well and I wish they got to spend more time together
Headcanon- even though we only see Kakyoin paint Once, I really like the idea of Kakyoin enjoying painting as well as playing video games.
Unpopular opinion- I kinda think Kakyoin is underrated as a Jobro. He had the least to gain from travelling with Jotaro and the rest of the Stardust     Crusaders. The main reason he states being the fact that Jotaro saved his life? It can be interpreted a lot of different ways and I think Kakyoin goes to try and pay Jotaro back, it shows how full of gratitude Kakyoin is.
A wish- I don’t want to see any more milf chaser jokes regarding Kakyoin.
5 words to best describe them- intelligent, polite, pretty, cherry licker
My nickname for them- sweet cherry boi
Rohan
Why I like them- My favorite thing about Rohan is his motivation to write. He doesn’t care about money or anything, he just wants people to read what he makes. The desire to have people read what you make and surpass yourself is really admirable in a writer/mangaka.
Why I don’t- Rohan is a bastard and he was willing to steal Koichi’s memories to write his manga. Rohan please, just talk to Koichi, he admires you and it would’ve saved you a trip to the hospital
Favorite episode (scene if movie)- either highway star arc or the episode with Janken kid. The moment I officially liked Rohan was when he punched Janken kid.
Favorite line- “I refuse.” Iconic for a reason.
Favorite outfit- Bites the Dust arc. That outfit? Super nice.
OTP- his work. I don’t really have an OTP for Rohan, and let’s face it Rohan is probably most dedicated to his work than most other things.
Brotp- Reimi or Koichi. I feel like Rohan would’ve wanted to spend more time with Reimi and help him remember some of his much younger years. Everyone likes Koichi and he’s the only one that gets Rohan to admit he’s going to miss Reimi.
Headcanon- Rohan being a smug bastard and rude to people is all a front.
5 words to best describe them- bastard supreme, smug, dramatic bitch
My nickname for them- bastard man

JJBA Diamond is unbreakable 26-30.
Janken boy: ah this ridiculous fight. -it’s fine. i just like seeing rohan get taken down a peg.
I am an alien: MIKITAKA :D. Josuke: finds out he knows a shapeshifter. “IT’S TIME TO SCAM ROHAN”. he (And Okuyasu) is such a believably shitty teenager. it’s great.
Highway Star: *always sunny theme* Josuke sets Rohan’s house on fire. also Coolest Josuke moment ever with the baby bike jump. and the beatdown of Yuya. it’s a good fight with a Lot of great Josuke moments. and i was excited for the DIU anime entirely for this one.
Cats love Yoshikage Kira: Kira’s dad: I NEED TO PROTECT MY SON. *shoots cat with stand arrow* *always sunny theme* The cat proceeds to nearly kill Kira. Also Hayato realizing kira is NOT his dad at All.
Kiramager 3: It’s time to bully the blueranger again. it’s a fun episode. Jewel/Juuru is a good lad
Blade 24-25: Undead hunters felt like we were speedrunning an entire long arc. -which i am glad for. (Also Kotaro has stopped having rights for the stuff with the orchid undead, after multiple eps of him being a goddamn dick to hajime.)
Blade 26-28: Imai’s last arc. goodbye Imai-san. i will not miss your writing for blade. i did not appreciate kenzaki having to relearn what he knew in ep 2 about himself. Mutsuki having to redo his entire arc. and Hajime having to deal with the whole “I’M NOT ATTACHED TO HUMANS” stuff. he says despite feeling like that place was his home. Shima was introduced too recently for me to care about him sacrificing himself. and everyone going super hard on the caring about him. Did not help. -at least he gave us the start of the joker undead stuff, And Tachibana kept his character growth. what a mess. can’t wait to see the insanity of the takoyaki eps next time.

Why "Stand" becomes my favorite battle system
Major Spoilers ahead, so BEWARE!!!
Tumblr media
1. It is learning, NOT training
Because I love the spontaneity it has, unlike its predecessor hamon and other mainstream shounen battle systems usually do; the like of such as nen, chakra, kido-zanpakutou-bankai etc in which you need proper training and proper mentor to develop it. Stand can only be learned by using & applying it during the battle... ON THE SPOT!!! You just have to count on your creativity & quick thinking. Even One Piece, while it has Devil Fruit system which is as unique as Stand, failed the moment haki got introduced because... well, haki need to be trained and you need a pro to teach you.
Back then (the first time I started JoJo) I was surprised when Stand was introduced for the first time in Stardust Crusaders (evil spirit LOL) then we moved on to the introduction & gathering for the party -> Holy got in critical situation -> JoJo's gang started their journey to Egypt to fight the big bad WTF!! When will they train their Stands?? Turned out that it wasn't need at all. I think, Stand is when the users just use it whenever the fight happens or by using random people as guinea pigs mischievously. Having a veteran Stand user to train you how to use your Stand is... useless. Even how to summon it is so simple:
"It will manifest whenever you want to protect yourself or want to beat the sh*t out of your enemy."  (credited to Josuke from part 4)
2. Experienced>>>Newbie?? MUDA MUDA
Having greater experience in Stand battle won't guarantee you to have greater chance of winning against the barely new Stand users. Proven by Jotaro, equipped with Star Platinum Za Warudo & his experience in battling many Stand users in Stardust Crusaders his past, against The Rats in part 4 (DiU). Had Josuke not been there with his Crazy Diamond, Jotaro would likely lose. Even Janken Boy (the newly Boy2Man's user) was capable to put Rohan in trouble.
This is in contrast with Hunter x Hunter verse, in which the well experienced/veteran nen users are highly respected there. Nen users with 40+ years experience will likely curb stomp newly nen users who just trained for a month. That's why training with pro nen users is really vital there.
3. "This must be the work of enemy's Stand"
Whenever something bizarre happens, we can assume that it must be the work of Stand but it can't be 100% sure. Even if we know it is a Stand's power, who is the user will still be a mystery. What I love about Stand is that there is no such thing like "I detect some menacing aura" or a complicated technique to hide your aura Stand. How to hide your Stand is just as simple as how to use your Stand; don't reveal your Stand or foolishly explain your power!! That's why we have to be very observant & intuitive to determine which the enemy Stand & the user.
“Your Stand is like your asshole, you can’t go around showing it off to people.” (credited to Norisuke IV from part 8)
4. The stats are simple
This is very subjective though, but I found that the stat system is simple but helpful. This is maybe confusing for some people, but what I mean about the stats is not how accurate they are... but more like about how helpful they are for me to create a fictional superpowers. Like many other stats in any fiction/shounen's databook, they are prone to be inconsistent or inaccurate. Therefore, always consider the feats >>> the stats whenever you want to do powerscaling/comparison.
But the things that are on the list from JoJo stats are very helpful for me in creating the powers. Destructive Power, Speed, Durability, Potential, Precision, Range... this list is really vital for creating a superpower imo. I love to use these stats to determine the limitation whenever I create a superpower ability, not only for JoJo Stand, but also for other fictional battle systems such as nen, devil fruit, quirk, etc (even though it's hidden). That's why I found that Stand is the easiest to create in creating superpowers compared to others. Here is the example:
Destructive Power: How strong your power or your character can destroy?
Speed: How fast your power takes the effect or how fast your character can move?
Durability: How much destructive power your character can withstand?
Potential: What your power can do right now? How far can your power develop? What's it maximum potential?
Precision: Is your attack focused or AoE type?
Range: How far your power will be effective? Do you have to come close to attack or can you do it from afar?
Albeit they sound generic, JoJo's stats are the most basic things that we have to consider whenever we want to create a power. You don't have to answer those question in numbers, but you can answer them in descriptive form.
5. It's more about concept/application than a theme
Unlike some battle systems in which the rule of "one theme is exclusive for one character" is often applied. The theme in JoJo's Stand is very flexible, we can have 3 ice-themed Stands (Horus, White Album, Born This Way(?), 5 time-manipulator Stands (The World, King Crimson, KQ: Bite The Dust, Made in Heaven, Mandom), 2 erasing-themed Stands (Cream & The Hand), 2 hair-manipulating Stands (Love Deluxe & Love Love Deluxe), 2 size-themed Stands (Little Feet & Goo Goo Dolls), 3 memory-reading Stands (Heaven's Door, Whitesnake, California King Bed) etc. They might shared the same theme but how they operate and the effect on the enemies are really different. It's not divided by the theme but rather by the type and application.
Compared to Stand, I found that the theme variation in Devil Fruits is more rigid: Logia (elemental), Zoan (animal theme) and Paramecia (similar to Stand in theme variation but more exclusive in possession). It is hard to create a DF power with the same theme especially if they already existed in canon. The easiest for me is to create Zoan DF as there are so many animal species in this world (too bad that Zoan is the least interesting imo). While Yuki Yuki no Mi (snow) is similar to Hie Hie no Mi (ice), one is absolutely inferior to the other.
PS: I'm not bashing Hunter x Hunter, One Piece & others, in fact I also love those shows... but this is about Stand afterall.
Also, I was thinking that no such thing of being Standless (by a crappy special tool like a limiter or exorcism), no dramatic bullshit of your aura getting blocked and suddenly you can't use Stand or lose your power or you run out of stamina/energy from overused Stand while you are still completely unharmed. You have to be dying (or got donutted) first to get in this state. Once you have a Stand, you will be stuck with it forever. Even Kakyoin was still able to use his last Emerald Splash while dying. Though you may argue in the case of Death 13, Boy2Man & Man in The Mirror arc, but it is not entirely being Standless imo as Fugo was still able to summon Purple Haze but got separated from it ... sadly that it got debunked by Whitesnake's ability :-(.
Sorry if my writing is messy and gramatically incorrect. It's been so long since I've written all this long.

With help from Yui and the rest of her friends, Asuna tracks down Kirito all the way to the port, and discovers that he must be taken to somewhere abroad. Once learning that the Soul Translator was a technology developed by Akihiko Kayaba, Asuna contacts Rinko Koujiro, Kayaba's former lover and co-researcher. Some time later, accompained by her secretary, Mayumi Reynolds, Rinko is taken to the "Ocean Turtle", an offshore research facility where he is welcomed by Kikuoka. Nanbu instructs Joe to take a dive in the third round, while Fujimaki keeps a close eye on Nanbu, chiding him for acting like a real coach even though he's about to make him throw the fight. Nanbu hopes that this act will repay their debt, but Fujimaki states that Joe will be under his heel forever. As Joe gets pummeled in the corner, Nanbu tries to encourage Joe to continue fighting while his Gear falls off and he hits the mat. Suddenly Sachio appears ringside, yelling at Joe not to give up. Joe gets off the mat and manages to beat Burroughs with a counterpunch, knocking him out. Meanwhile, Nanbu begins to brawl against Fujimaki's men in the suite. As one of them points a gun at him, Nanbu grabs a knife. Meanwhile, Joe and Sachio are celebrating their victory, and then race to the suite where Nanbu has stabbed his remaining eye out as payment to Fujimaki. Impressed at the spectacle, Fujimaki decides to let the three go.

Rohan soon learns that Ken's Stand allows him to steal energy from others and keep it if he wins three times out of five, discovering that he has already gained a third of Heaven's Door's ability. Ken then wins the fourth match, gaining more of Heaven's Door's ability and evening the score. After holding on with a pair of ties, Rohan manages to win his third match and retrieve Heaven's Door after borrowing Shizuka the invisible baby from Joseph and having her change what Ken attempted to throw out. Not a doodle ask sorry but the hypes too strong, what are you most looking forward to getting animated in the part 5 anime?
most of all, I think the characters. it’s gonna be such a trip. also really  looking foward to who voices who!!!! I really love the voice cast for most chartacters  in the ancient PS2 game, especially for abbacchio, narancia and risotto.
also really  looking foward to see La Squadra animated. I love them. I also wanna see the torture dance animated too hehe. also REALLY having expectations of how the last opening’s gonna be with King Crimson, like, really.
If anything, Vento aureo is an arc that has very little light hearted chapters? it’s always a thrill  ride with lots of blood so we’re not gonna get a fucking rest EVER and shit’s gonna go downhil too fast.  It’s not like DiU that was thrilling too but it did give you some time to relax with arcs that had action but were’s STRICTLY DEADLY
Let’s go eat some  italian food!
Picked up something bad!
let’s go hunting!
Rohan kishibe’s adventure
Yukako yamagishi dreams of cinderella
Janken boy is coming
I’m an alien !
and others. so i’m like, ohhhhhhhhhhhh nnnnnooooooooooooooo. because  like, u gonna hav the first 10 chapters  until giorno joins the gang and then la squadra  hits and they just begin to fucking kill eachother u feel? I’m not ready for all this to be honest chief.

Character/Outfit Design Analysis (Rohan Kishibe) Part 2
Tumblr media
Continuing from part 1, we have here the magnificent specimen known as Rohan Kishibe and more of his many outfits to discuss and analyze. Let's just dive right into it then!
The first outfit on the agenda is the outfit Rohan wears during the fight with Ken Oyanagi during the Janken Boy is Coming arc and is also the first image in this post. This seems to have become one his most iconic and most recognizable outfits in general as it’s the default costume he is wearing in both JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle and Eyes of Heaven.
It’s a simple outfit with a crop-top undershirt/jacket combo and slacks with shoes. The jackets and underwear both have his signature pen symbol on them, showing his dedication to his craft once more. This outfit is his signature for a reason. It’s not as flashy as some of the others, but it makes up for that by being a true testament to the kind of person he is and the fashion sense he enjoys (midriffs <3)
Tumblr media
Next up we have the outfit he wears during his “fight” with the Stand, Cheap Trick. It’s not really much of a fight, but it’s stressful and suspenseful leaving you guessing the entire time you watch it. Whoops, got a bit side tracked, let’s proceed.
He wears a shirt similar to the one in I Am An Alien minus the midriff (which is what helped that outfit even WORK imo...I’m biased towards midriffs if you haven’t noticed) with some very nice pants and some tall boots. He’s also rocking a pen tip necklace in the style of Flava Flav. In the image here, we can see him regretting that mistake as the rest of the outfit is actually amazing without it.
Tumblr media
The Highway Star arc brings another fantastic outfit our way, with this interesting one button jacket with a long shirt underneath that looks suspiciously like a dress with a collar. He wears rather slim fitting pants with some boots that give him the feel of a stylish biker (fitting since he has a bike in this arc...wait, if he has a bike...why the hell was he on the bus?)
The outfit he wears here also gives him an air of a detective in a crime novel. This, along with the general mood of the introduction with him going into the tunnel to investigate the door and window he sees there while on the bus, it feels like we’re watching some crazy insane Sherlock Holmes story.
Tumblr media
And here we are, the final outfit and boy, what an outfit it is! During what is quite possibly one of the best story arcs in not only part 4 of JoJo’s, but in JoJo’s as a whole, the Bites The Dust arc where the group finally begins to put the pieces together to defeat the serial killer plaguing Morioh Town, Rohan drives into town to locate a lead on the whereabouts of the killer (srsly...wtf was Rohan doing on a bus? This man has a motorcycle AND A CAR!!!)
What can be considered one of his most popular outfits overall, this get-up sees Rohan with another of his not-jacket jackets that he loves wearing (they may as well just be called capes), a midriff(<3) shirt with two pen tip symbols and pants that seems like they’re connected to his tall zipper boots. A pair of rider gloves complete the ensemble and give off the impression of somebody who’s ready for business.
This outfit is a perfect one to end the series on, as it has all the makings of a super flashy last battle outfit. Sadly, Rohan doesn’t end up doing much in this arc due to the focus on Josuke finding and fighting the villain, but it still gives off the impression of a final battle everyone wants to watch.
That about wraps it up for this post. I’ll be doing a post at a much later point about Rohan’s outfits in the side stories but I need to actually ready all of them first!! Till next time, Ciao~!!

On Josuke and Rohan’s Relationship
I love the tension between these two.  One of the things I find interesting, however, is that they both hate each other but still make the choice to risk their lives for each other.  The arc of their relationship is fascinating.  Now obviously Rohan on his part has plenty of reasons to hate Josuke, one being that Josuke hospitalized him for a month.  Except when I rewatched some DiU, I think it’s a little more complicated than that.
But even before that, Rohan was really interested in Josuke.  He spent three whole months not knowing anyone else had powers like he did.  Josuke was one of those people in Koichi’s memories that Rohan found to be inspirational material for his manga.  Rohan was even somewhat impressed that Josuke could withstand his pen attacks in their initial encounter.  It stands to reason that Rohan would resent Josuke for wrecking his house and beating the shit out of him, though.
Except that’s not entirely the case.  After Rohan recovers from his initial shock at being pummeled into his own bookcase and then crushed by said bookcase, how does he react? He wants to know MORE about Josuke.  He wants to know his Backstory.  Then when he hears Koichi tell Okuyasu the story, he’s moved almost to the verge of tears.
Tumblr media
Relatable tbh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He says he’s happy.  I love the slight ambiguity here, too.  This is literally like that ‘they’d punch me and I’d say thanks’ meme.  Because of Josuke he gets to...  experience getting the absolute shit beaten outta him.  The fact that he practically squeals in terror mere moments after showing a warped sense of gratitude for the ‘experience,’ is hysterical.
Tumblr media
writing college essays be like.  ok but honestly this one kinda makes me a little sad because of reasons.  It speaks to how desperately Rohan wanted to be able to create stories that people would read.  He’s afraid of failure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s probably more referring to the experience of getting to learn all those cool things about Stand users and being inspired to write for his manga than getting beaten up and crushed by his own bookcase, but it’s still funny.  It’s also ironic bcuz out of everyone in DiU, Rohan is probably one of the unluckiest dudes I have ever seen.  bruh....  I absolutely love that Rohan is deeply invested emotionally into certain aspects of Josuke’s life, without liking him as a person.  I know ppl have joked that Rohan has probably portrayed Josuke-type characters as villains in his manga, but I firmly believe that, whether or not Rohan would admit it, he’s inspired by Josuke’s life to make compelling stories, as well.
So how do we get to the essential roots of Rohan and Josuke’s mutual hatred? I will grant you, Rohan being hospitalized for a month would have given him time to calm down from his obsessed high and start to resent Josuke for hindering his ability to work on his manga via injury and breaking all his stuff.  The trade-off is that a whole new world of inspiration opens up to him and also inadvertently leads to Rohan developing his Stand’s abilities further (click here for my meta on the growth of Heaven’s Door).  Even though that doesn’t balance out the degree to which he got his ass kicked, I still don’t think the hospitalization is the real reason for their tension, or rather I should say, not all of the reason.
Ultimately, I think that Josuke and Rohan’s personalities simply mix poorly.  Josuke is terrible at telling lies and is prone to feeling immensely guilty when he thinks he’s suspected of wrong-doing.  Rohan is a highly paranoid, distrustful person by nature and hates being humiliated due to his pridefulness (which... reminds of Kira actually, but that’s another subject entirely).  Coupled with the fact that many of Josuke’s ideas tend to go very, very wrong, it’s a recipe for disaster.  This is highlighted in their gambling match.
Rohan can sense Josuke is trying to screw him over, and he fixates on it, to a point that he doesn’t even care about his house burning down in the moment.  Why? Because Rohan’s pride is at stake.  Not only that Josuke heals him even though Rohan was unable to figure out the secret, which damages his pride even further.  It’s only following the events of this that Rohan passive-aggressively tells Josuke he’s upset about his stuff getting destroyed.
This is critical groundwork for the Highway Star incident.  Josuke is burning with guilt at what he did to Rohan.  Josuke is a poor high school student who wishes he had more money, but he certainly didn’t expect or want things to escalate as far as they did.  Rohan resents Josuke for the humiliation.  I think it's worth noting that Rohan says he was holding back anger towards Josuke for Mr. Joestar’s and Koichi’s sake (not that I feel he did a very good job of it, but he did at least try, the implication being that Rohan has started to show more awareness of others’ feelings, even though he still has difficulty dealing with people socially).
What upsets me is that Rohan is very intent on capturing Kira and worries about potential victims, but Josuke doesn’t realize this about Rohan, who does a lot of behind the scenes work.  The last time they really interacted was when Rohan almost killed Josuke’s friends.  Aside from that Josuke sees Rohan being a jerk to some random kid (Janken Boy).  His attempt to invite Rohan to sit at the table with his friends is interesting given that Josuke openly admits to Joseph a little later that he dislikes Rohan.  He’s probably just going through the motions of politeness since he doesn’t look terribly thrilled about asking Rohan to talk with them.  Koichi no doubt told the others everything that happened in the Ghost Alley, but even Koichi is like, ‘Don’t trust him too much, he’s pretty sketchy.’
Rohan was desperately trying to warn Josuke about the illusion in the tunnel.  He deeply cares about what happens to people.  This is evident in Janken Boy, and I think its placement in the story is very important in showing how Rohan’s character has started to really evolve.  I will fight you on this.  Josuke, who has no reason to trust Rohan and is immensely guilt-ridden about cheating and inadvertently leading to... over 7 million yen in damages to the guy’s house, lashes out at Rohan.  There’s mutual distrust going on.
Rohan is angered that a guy who was blatantly humiliating and attempting to rob him would dare to consider him a liar.  It’s understandable but so ironic.  Rohan is actually a pretty honest person.  When it comes to serious situations or his feelings about people, he's almost always upfront to a point of rudeness.  Yet it’s this same abrasive personality that makes him seem so untrustworthy to others in DiU.  Over and over, Rohan tries to help in his own way and warn the others of danger, but he gets shut down.  He still tries anyway.
Tumblr media
When Rohan is struggling against Highway Star, he’s clearly relieved and shocked Josuke came back.  The main difference between this situation and Koichi saving him is that Josuke doesn’t get to see Rohan’s reaction.  What I love about Rohan is that, like Josuke, he is not the type who abandons others, even if he doesn’t know or like them.  You could call it his sense of pride/ego, or a strong-willed conviction, or an incessant need to be an arrogant dick, but the simple fact is that he refuses to betray Josuke and is fully prepared to die fighting alone.  Rohan warns him to stay away, and he’s angry that Josuke fell into the trap because of the stubborn contrariness that Rohan hates so much (I have meta on this, but another time).
Meanwhile this is the first time Josuke has ever witnessed Rohan being a decent human being.  He’s so thrown off that Rohan would choose to sacrifice his life, but he vows to save Rohan no matter what.  And previously, Josuke has almost always referred to Rohan in a rude form of address (not usually to his face directly but I like that this goes both ways), but that changes in this arc.
The thing that really kills me is, at the end of the day, Josuke genuinely tries to apologize to Rohan.  He’s realized that Rohan is more than an asshole.  He was telling the truth and sacrificed himself to protect Josuke.  Rohan having the social skills of a walnut refuses to let Josuke finish apologizing.  I really want Josuke and Rohan to reconcile, but I can also understand that it will take a LOT more for them to be on good terms.  I wouldn’t want to just hug it out with a guy whose fool-ass tried to rob and humiliate me, especially when you consider Josuke went to such great lengths to cheat too (though I personally feel like his being able to break into Rohan’s house to switch the dice seems more of a convenient plot device but shh).
I think there’s many reasons why Rohan doesn’t want to hear Josuke’s apology, one being that he doesn’t want to be indebted to Josuke (and he makes it clear he doesn’t consider it as such because he hasn’t forgiven Josuke for all the shitty things he did prior to this incident), because he’s unable to read Josuke’s behavior and has trouble taking kindness at face value, because he’s still bitter that Josuke healed him without his approval from before, etc.  However, I think the fact that Rohan calls Josuke an idiot indicates he does care in his own way.  Josuke’s refusal to listen put his life in danger, too, and Rohan was trying to prevent that because it would’ve meant they’d both get killed.  Rohan does not like Josuke as a person, but he shows concern about him, and the opposite is also true.  Much as they try to avoid dealing with each other, they are forced to cooperate by circumstance, and I like that.

Hey there. I just really REALLY gotta know what's up with Josuhan. That ship just never clicked for me, and i would love if you could explain why you ship them. As much as id love to rewatch DIU for Josuhan moments, current circumstances prohibit me from doing so. Help a bro out here. P.s. Josuyasu is a1 imo, but whatever froots your loops :P
One of the reasons I really like Josuhan is because it’s the two that don’t get along at first (I ship that dynamic a lot throughout the many fandoms I’m in). I mean, they don’t “hate” each other like a lot of people in the fandom suggest, and yes, they do get off to a bad start (to be fair, if someone was trying to kill my friends or I got beaten up because I dissed someone’s hair, I’d be pretty pissed too), but they do eventually come around. The Highway Star arc was unfortunately the only part we got to see them work together in (I wish part 4 had been longer), but the two end up putting their differences aside, at least enough so that they can sit at the same table without being disgusted by each other (it was in one of Rohan’s spin-offs. I wanna say it was Louvre, but I’m not sure).
Not to mention, there’s multiple times where Josuke tried to befriend Rohan (telling him to come sit with them during Janken Boy, healing his finger after he messed it up with his pen, saving him from Highway Star and then wanting to again, put their differences aside (it was different in the manga, but DP gave us a much more meaningful moment between the two (I think) in the anime). And I also think that even out of everyone Josuke has met, Rohan dissed his hair the most, but he didn’t permanently mess up his face or anything. Yeah, it took some time for the man to recover, but he probably offered to heal his wounds after he calmed down about his pompadour crisis). I’m not gonna lie, Rohan is (extremely) petty, and I believe he is a tsundere. Like, 9000% tsundere. And Josuke is also a bit of a dick for trying to con Rohan out of his money, but there are real life people that will do that kinda stuff with the person they like. “Picking on them”, “acting like they hate so and so” or whatever ya wanna call it.
Lmao, I’m sorry. This answer is all over the place. I didn’t exactly know how to put my love for Josuhan into words, so excuse me! But I hope I helped to shed some light on this ship for the people that do question it.
And if you don’t ship Josuhan, that’s good, too! I can understand liking Josuyasu as well, even though I personally only ship them as a brotp.~

Nen and Characters: Gon and Hisoka
Both Gon and Hisoka’s nen powers are inspired by elements of their childhood:
Tumblr media
Gon’s Jajanken is born from him loving Janken and playing at it with some Whale Island’s inhabitants. Basically it is a game of his childhood he transforms into a weapon.
Tumblr media
The two powers Hisoka has are similarly named after sweets he loved as a child.
This similarity is interesting especially because HxH is after all nothing more than the story of Gon trying to grow up and Hisoka is basically what Gon would become if he remains stuck in his childish mentality i.e. a man-child.
Let’s now look closer at Gon and Hisoka’s powers.
GON’S JAJANKEN
As I said before Gon’s power is born from a childhood memory. Gon’s childhood has been at the end of the day a lonely one:
Tumblr media
He was the only child on a small island and so, despite how much the people of Whale Island and his aunt loved him, he lacked peers with whom he could play. It is said multiple times that the main person he played with was his aunt or at most some sailors who passed by.
Probably Janken was one of the few games he could play with others since it doesn’t take much time and it doesn’t require much moving around.
At the same time, when one thinks about Janken in the contest of a shonen manga, they can’t avoid thinking about Dragon Ball’s main character. This isn’t by chance since Gon is without a doubt a deconstruction of the classical shonen hero. After all even the fact he insists on shouting the name of his special move is indicative of this since it is a joke about one of the cliches of the genre:
Tumblr media
In many shonen you have a child or a boy who has to grow up and his growth is usually linked to him becoming progressively stronger both physically and mentally and acquiring several power-ups which help him defeat his enemies.
Gon can superficially be read as a shonen hero archetype. He is young and full of potential and since the beginning his determination is noted to be one of his major attributes. He goes through a harsh training which makes him stronger and more competent in a fight and up until the Chimera Ant Arc this seems to be his arc and everything seems to be going great for him. Even his nen category is considered the best suited for a fight.
However, the Chimera Ant Arc is where Gon’s deconstruction takes place (or at least where it becomes mostly evident) and where, in general, the ideal of the strongest fighter is shreded. After all in that arc we have symbolically the strongest man alive, Netero, dying and it’s as if with him the archetype of the strongest man as a prototype of man our MC should become disappears as well.
Let’s consider Netero’s past:
Tumblr media
Netero’s strenght didn’t come out of nowhere, but was the result of a specific choice of life. He sacrificed his life to obtain his strength and in the end he wasn’t even able to win fair and square against his opponent:
Tumblr media
Netero killed the King not because of his nen or his martial arts, but because of technology. Basically bombing the Royal Palace with the Rose would have obtained the same result.
Moreover, let’s consider what Netero says about himself in the message he leaves to his subordinates:
Tumblr media
Netero, despite being the strongest man alive, didn’t consider himself the best hunter since he felt intimidated rather than excited by the Dark Continent and preferred to have an opponent rather than an entire world to explore. In short, Netero was the strongest fighter, but in the end there are other things a person can decide to do in his life and some of them can be even greater than fighting.
By the way, this is not to say that the archetype of the bold explorer is what the series is encouraging Gon to become since even this kind of figure will probably be deconstructed through characters like Ging. What I wanted to underline was simply that in HxH the objective of the characters isn’t to become the strongest, but to decide what to do with their lives and whatever it is is gonna be fine as long as they are happy with it:
Tumblr media
However, let’s go back to Gon and in particular to his character during the Chimera Ant Arc. It’s obvious that in this arc what were always considered Gon’s strong points become the origin of his down-fall. Gon’s determination, his tendency to never give up and his loyalty toward his comrades are the reasons why this trasformation happens:
Tumblr media
It is basically said that the strength Gon has in this form is one he could achieve in one of his possible futures. A future born from him training diligently every day of his life. However, this is nothing more than the path Netero took. So in the Chimera Ant Arc we see Gon sacrifice his potential and obtain immediately a strength he might obtain if he were to organize his life in a very specific way. In short, who the fandom very poignantly calls Gon-san is nothing more than the epitome of the shonen hero, a man made up of pure strength and that, for that strength, sacrificed everything he had. He is also the result of Gon growing up too fast (after all Gon’s body becomes the one of an adult) and not thinking deeply enough about what kind of future he wants.
Gon’s transformation is luckily reverted thanks to Nanika’s powers and Gon is said to have lost the ability to use his nen. The details around this loss are still vague, but Ging told us this:
Tumblr media
A person in a normal state is one who emanates aura (as Ging said Gon was doing), but who can’t control it. I think Gon hasn’t lost his ability to use nen permanently (nen is a too much integral part of the HXH world, so having the MC stay without it until the end and still being part of the plot would be difficult to manage), but that he simply has to re-learn it. I know there are theories about how Gon’s nen category may change. I don’t personally mind, but I would like him to develop a different power than Jajanken. Jajanken was indicative of a naive and childish mentality Gon has to grow out from. What is more, this technique was born by Gon’s desire to become stronger, so by his desire to become a fighter. We saw what his future as a fighter would have looked like (Gon-san), but now Gon has to consider if that is truly who he wants to become or if he wants to do something different with his life:
Tumblr media
This is the dilemma Gon has to solve right now and when he will solve it his new nen will probably take shape.
HISOKA’S MAGIC TRICKS
Hisoka’s character is, on a superficial level, basically a combination of one thing children are scared of and one thing children are fascinated by, i.e. a clown and a magician.
Children being scared of clowns is a very common trope which has been solidified thanks to works like “It” and it is accepted as a stereotype in pop culture. Let’s think for example that in Inside Out Riley’s greatest fear is a giant clown and Riley has been written to be an ordinary girl to the point of being stereotypical.
At the same time children are fascinated by magicians and can observe them for a very long time trying to understand how their tricks work.
Because of this it’s not a surprise that after facing Hisoka for the first time Gon’s reaction is one of both fear and fascination:
Tumblr media
Hisoka is a presence who intrigues Gon and he is at the same time attracted to him and repulsed by him.
Hisoka’s attire as a magician isn’t only for show either, since he fights as if he were to perform in a magic show. His battle with Kastro perfectly illustrates this:
Tumblr media
Hisoka’s fighting style heavily consists in him dragging his opponent’s attention away, so that he can then take them by surprise and this is how the majority of magic tricks works. This is perfectly shown through Texture Surprise which is described like this:
Tumblr media
The trick is easy to discover and it remaining unknown is something which depends from the magician’s ability and this is what thrills Hisoka.
Interestingly the way Hisoka uses his apparently bland abilities is similar to the way Gon is able to transform his power’s weaknesses in strong points:
Tumblr media
Against Knuckle Gon is able to show that he is perfectly able to bluff and to distract his opponent by playing with his expectations and this is very similar to what Hisoka does.
However, Hisoka’s fighting style has always had two layers:
Tumblr media
At first sight one may think that Hisoka’s powers can only work if he diverts his opponent’s attention and if he plays mind-games, but his fight with Gon shows how that is not true, since he can use them in a much more brutal and direct way by attaching his Bungee-Gum to his victim leaving them without a chance to run away.
Bungee-Gum is a power which mirrors this specific part of Hisoka’s personality and it’s not by chance that this power’s alternative name is Elastic Love. Hisoka’s elastic and sticky gum is nothing more, but a metaphor for the unhealthy obsession Hisoka shows for whoever is strong enough to challenge him. An obsession which can go to unthinkable lengths, like joining a dangerous criminal group to get the chance to challenge its leader. If Illumi lives his relationships purely in an utilitaristic and manipulative way, Hisoka seems to blur the lines among love, sexual attraction and fighting. This is made obvious multiple times, so I’ll just make use of two:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In relation to the first scene check out this meta by @bakemono-recchan. It explains how Hisoka is using a line which can mean both “kill” and “have sex with”.
In the second scene we have Illumi equating a contract Hisoka made with him where Hisoka himself is the target to an engagement ring.
So in short in Hisoka are present two different tendencies which are nothing more than two different kinds of pleasure linked to the same thing i.e. being able to fight strong opponents and to find excitement in it. These two different forms of entertainment can be described by using Hisoka’s own metaphor:
Tumblr media
They are the happiness a child feels when building a giant castle with cards and the one that same child experiences when he makes his own creation collapse.
Up until recently we have seen Hisoka building his own castle and because of this we have seen him delaying the time of his fights on mutliple occasions. However, it seems that recently he has decided to finally tear the castle down:
Tumblr media
After his fight with Chrollo Hisoka started to move to make all his few and precarious relationships spiral into chaos. He decided to go actively against Chrollo by targetting what he cares for the most. At the same time he refused Machi’s offer to stitch him up and so changed their usual dynamic. Moreover, he asked Illumi to join the spiders, so that he can fight him as well. So in this short period of time Hisoka went out of his way to make his own equilibrium crumble and to accellerate the progression of his own relationships toward a death fight which is the ending he himself had programmed since the beginning, but that he seemed not to be in a hurry to reach until recently.
What’s interesting about this is that this development happened after a death-experience Hisoka managed to overcome thanks to his own strength and his nen. This experience happens immediately after Gon’s one has been resolved thanks to Killua and Nanika. However, if Gon’s reaction to his almost-death is to stop temporally and rethink himself and his relationships with others and to realize how much these people mean for him:
Tumblr media
Hisoka’s own reaction is to accellerate things and to destroy all of what he built. So maybe it’s not casual that, while Gon can’t currently use his nen, Hisoka has basically become his nen:
Tumblr media
He is alive not because of someone else’s power (like Gon is), but because of his Bunjee-Gum which makes his lungs and heart work and of which his limbs are currently made of. However, Hisoka’s Bunjee-Gum is, as previously said, a representation of his twisted way of interacting with others and so we have Hisoka currently warping his relationships even more than before.
GROWING CHILD AND MAN-CHILD
Hisoka’s appearence resembles a joker and for all narrative purposes he is the Joker of the series.
In every arc he has been heavily featured in he has almost always played at the same time the role of antagonist and the role of helper. For example in the Hunter Exam arc he, despite being openly malicious, helped Gon and his friends on several occasions and during the York Shin City arc he, despite his collaboration with the Ryodan, helped Kurapika to gather intelligence (he obviously omitted much info). What is more, he never formed an alliance with another character without plotting behind his back to kill them in the future.
In short Hisoka moves freely in the plot without letting any tie with another character bind him:
Tumblr media
This quote is interesting because among all of the major characters in the series Hisoka is literally the only one without a background.
He doesn’t come from a ghost city or a family of assassins. One day he simply appeared out of nowhere. Kinda like Gon. And Ging. However even Gon has an interesting background element in Ging himself and Ging has recently presented us with some evidence that the Freecs Family isn’t exactly normal:
Tumblr media
Hisoka on the other hand has nothing of the sort. He is a character without a past which influences him or which has molded him in any way. And this is exactly why he never grows. To grow a person needs to go through several experiences and to be changed by them, but Hisoka’s mentality is one which lets him go unaffected.
Gon has obviously shades of this same mentality:
Tumblr media
Maybe Gon deep down felt somehow without roots and links (let’s not forget he grew on an island, so isolated from the world) and this is precisely why he tried so hard to find Ging, a figure that in his mind could clarify Gon’s own identity and purpose. However, once he finds Ging he realizes this:
Tumblr media
And this:
Tumblr media
Gon discovered that he had been making connections all along and are exactly these connections which have been able to tie him down and to make him change, while Hisoka in his overlapping of love and violence could never realize something like that.
Whenever Gon went on alone without thinking at the consequences there was always someone ready to think at them for him and to call him out for it:
Tumblr media
And the love for his comrades managed to mitigate the aspect of his personality he shares with Hisoka i.e. his love for excitement.
In the end this is the main difference between Gon and Hisoka and it has been there since the Hunter Exam and is crystal clear in the answer these two characters gave Netero:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gon could never push himself to hurt his friends, while Hisoka wanted to avoid fighting Gon and Killua simply because he was looking forward to a future battle once the two of them had become stronger.
