Veeva dash’s design has baffled hundreds upon hundreds of fans because pixels are hard to decipher. 

So i challenged myself to accurately figure out what the heck the skin is 

I looked up her skin and She's apparently a samurai

im white and i know nothing about ancient japanese culture

SO I CHANGED THAT!!

Let's start with what's traditionally worn under the armor. 

fundoshi

It looks like underpants because it is. It's mens underwear. It's a loincloth that wraps around the hips. 

hitatare 

This was a samurai’s everyday clothing, chosen for comfort. The sleeves have draw strings to tie them up as needed.

The hakama 

Most hakama are like those super flowy pants that people think are dresses but then you separate your legs and SHOCK!! THEY'RE PANTS!!

Most sources I've seen, however, show samurai hakama being about knee length or being tied off near the knees.  (i haven't read anything confirming this though)

the hitatare is tucked inside the hakama

Tabi

These are socks with a separation between the big toe and rest of toes

Let's move on to the armor and how to “un-westernize” it

Suneate (Shin guards)

Samurai did not wear boots or iron plated armor. They wore shoes and shin guards.

These are made of metal and then lined with leather on the inside for comfort! 

Kyahan

can be worn under suneate for super maximum comfort. 

Haidate

is thigh protection. It's not one solid sheet of metal and leather but it is made of many strips that are tied together for mobility. It is tied around the waist like an apron.

do aka the chest armor.  

Do is made with many strips of leather and metal tied together like the haidate. 

Do always has shoulder straps, unlike western armor, for more mobility

It can also be hinged like this 

But you gotta keep the shoulder straps, you can't get rid of those. 

In these diagrams I have omitted the kusazuri, which is attached to the bottom of the do. 

Kusazuri

This is a danger skirt. They protect the hips, butt, and crotch. It's made similarly to the haidate and do. I have seen veeva’s kusazuri be confused as crotch armor.

The guruwa and nadowa 

protect the neck 

This is not required. 

Sode (shoulder armor)

It's made in the same fashion as do. 

Kote

It covers only some of the hand because, if you haven't noticed, the samurai froth at the mouth for that sweet sweet mobility. 

Kabuto (helmet) 

These are made with strips of metal or leather all meeting in the center. This dome is called the hachi. 

^^isolated hachi

There is very often a Mabizashi (a visor/brim) to protect the eyes 

Shikoro is the name of the suspended neck guard, produced similarly to do for that delicious mobility. 

The datemono or tatemono is a crest placed on the front of the kabuto 

Veeva Dash's datemono appears to be a star or sun.

Extra details!!

This can either be a tassel/flag hung from the Kasa jirushi no kan (a small ring on the back of the helmet for the aforementioned flag) or a ponytail fed through the Tehen (a hole for ventilation or to possibly put one's top knot through? Sources were conflicted)

Something you'll often see assumed of Hank is that just because he's a man of the arts, well read, and eloquent, is that he's some kind of music snob, that he only listens to opera, that he only enjoys classical, that he looks down on 'lesser' forms of music. And I honestly just don't believe that would be the case?

Like . . . here's the thing. Hank may talk fancy, but he is still, at best, a middle class farm boy from Illinois. If he has an accent, it's probably closest to a Chicago accent, if he hasn't trained his voice to do something entirely different - he does mention his voice has changed during his feline mutation to a baritone, so it's not out of the question. But he is not (or at least, he should not be) a hoity toity snooty asshole.

This is something even writers often get wrong about him - they assume that he's the smart character, ergo he must be the snooty, elitist character, which is something Ben Percy leans into, but it's not even just him, it's Paul Di Filippo in X-Men Unlimited vol. 2 #8, too. It becomes an asshole trait, and it's just. Not. Accurate.

Hank likes all kinds of music. In fact, I struggle to think of a kind he's outright stated he hates, though he's been around for 60 years, I'm sure someone can correct me. He's a curious fellow! He likes to explore! He'll consume any media, he quotes 1940s Superman comics, he watches Robin Hood movies with Wonder Man, why in god's name would he be a snob?

As for headcanon? I have tons! I often think, hmm, this feels like a song Hank would like, or a song that feels like a Hank song, when I listen to music, because. You know. Big blue guy's p much always on the brain.

I have a Spotify playlist that I occasionally add to, but currently on there is:

Is She Really Going Out With Him? by Joe Jackson - self deprecating, but also kind of a banger.

Carry on by fun - fun is an amazing band, and I definitely feel the lyricism and scale of their music would appeal to Hank.

Rain on Me by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande - I don't know if Hank would listen to this, but it has his vibe.

Cells by They Might Be Giants - I'm sorry, but have you fucking heard a band that more encapsulates Hank's personality?

Dr. Wanna Do by Caro Emerald - my old Abigail RP partner used to use this as her ringtone for Hank. I think Hank likes some jazz.

Cure for Me by Aurora - again, not one I think Hank would listen to, but again, it feels like Hank to me.

Very Good Advice by Robert Smith - Hank totally digs new wave and the Cure, and literary references mixed in with that vibe? Totally.

Moonshine by Caravan Palace - this song leads into Lone Digger by the same band, which I put on Dark Beast's playlist, representing the continuity between them. It has the right energy.

There Ain't Half Been Some Clever Bastards by Ian Dury and the Blockheads - songs Hank would sing in the middle of the fight if it weren't full of swearing and comics were allowed to do that.

I Want You to Want Me by Cheap Trick - he does.

On Melancholy Hill by Gorillaz - this just has exactly the right energy.

I Will Dare by The Replacements - "How smart are you? / How dumb am I? / Don't count any of my advice. / Oh, meet me any place or anywhere or anytime / Now I don't care, meet me tonight / If you will dare, I might dare."

Anti-Hero by Taylor Swift - another one that doesn't feel quite like something Hank would listen to, but I think we can all relate to this song a little bit (does that make me a basic bitch? Maybe), and some of the lyrics are so awfully Hank. "I'll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror," like, fuck.

Turning Japanese by The Vapors - Iunno, I just think he'd like it. I often think that if I were gonna make an OG X-Factor movie, this is what would start the movie during a fight scene.

I would also like to give @brw a shoutout for their excellent Hank playlist, which introduced me to, among other things, Touch-Tone Telephone, which feels like Hank's theme song.

Oh, also, The Plastic Age by The Buggles. Hank absolutely loves prog-rock, you know he does. Oh, and showtunes! The man just will not stop singing, in the middle of fights or while being filmed for the nightly news, so he totally vibes with some Broadway. I'd also be lying if I said that Dust and Ashes doesn't feel like a New X-Men Grant Morrison Beast vibe all over. And Hank would love it! A musical based on War and Peace? Sign him the fuck up!

2 - 04/12/2023 : chike chike chike.. frogot why i drew him think i was thinking of him doing cat things and it was gonna be a lot more than 2 drawings but i gived up x ,, but this is the most up 2 date drawing of his current design aside from like. the one colour wheel wip. so ur getting crumbs for him im sorry chike fans (1 person)

8 - 12/12/2023 : twas in the middle of finalising a design for my human Sonny, so heres some lil phone doodles where i was figuring out his hair and hat, i ended up going with the right hand side, thought it would be worth posting them

9 - 16/12/2023 : first sort of draft of his design being put to use, not my faaave drawing but it was nice to finally get him drawn, it was an absolute ballache trying to get his design perfect, the art block was Strong that week.. anyway, i did end up changing some things, just tweaks mostly, and i scrapped the hoodie, i wanted him to have a bigass varsity jacket collar to hide behind, so i opted for him wearing a plain t-shirt underneath instead, eventually

10 - 20/12/2023 : Buttercup and his scary ass big blue freak eyes, based on a tweet i saw, the OP went private eye fink but the og tweet said like "i don't have rizz, i have unsettlingly large blue eyes that are haunted by visions", and thats just Buttercup.. so heres him, having a jolly good stare

Anyway - here's some songs that have made me think of kunikidazai when listening to but they get more and more obscure/inaccurate (might just be me taking an opportunity to talk about songs I like... whoops)!!

1. Worst Case Scenario- The Hoosiers

This song to me is such a one to the other song, can be either knkd or dz addressing it to the other - both kind of criticizing each other's lives and how they behave but genuinely wishing the other to be better

2. Icarus - Bastille

Similar to the last one, feels like it could easily be a one to the other song but where they're more just aggressively concerned for each other's lives (Dazai w/Kunikida and his ideals and Kunikida with Dazai and his suicidal tendencies and both of them with their self-sacrificing tendencies (knkd and the helicopter and dz in the elevator))

3. Remains- Bastille/Rag n'Bone Man, Skunk Anansie

Another Bastille song,, this one is closer to an actual love song KDJFHKFJh but uhh,, it's a nice lil tune about always loving each other, even after death- even if not getting along always and that kind of just makes me think of knkdz (55 minutes knkdz specifically bc they do die (for a bit) together there)

(Also poet by Bastille is the Kunikida song ever if ur interested in just knkd)

4. Stranger- Covey

had to sneak a covey song in somewhere ahah- feel like this one would be more of a Dazai POV one just Not Feeling good enough for Kunikida's partnership (work, platonic, romantic or otherwise) esp when his past was still kept secret from him

5. New Face- James

This one's strange but here me out... It's Dazai's entrance Exam Kunikida POV coded to me- Been wanting to make an edit with this to the entrance exam stage play for forever

6. Cornflower Blue - Flower Face

This whole Song is SO Knkdz to me,, romance but in some strange morbid-is way with foreboding dark undertones and the constant threat of losing the other ahah

Garamond feels like another realistic KNKDZ song where it's... Not The Best Relationship but they're trying and are both dedicated to each other but it's still somewhat destructive/self sacrificing so idk??

8. Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins) - Father John Misty

This might be one of my favorite romantic songs of all time and so I just had to find a way to connect it to KNKDZ ahah- but? I like to view it as maybe?? them both trying to find a Normal relationship in another and just experiencing actual like,, healthy romance,, but this I feel?? would kinda be not accurate to canon and represent perhaps more of an idealized version of knkdz </3

but yeah, these two lyrics specifically remind me of them,, the first one would be from kunikida's pov as has always made me think of his plan of waiting till a certain age to date/get married/etc. and the idea that falling in love with Dazai would change how he views that and the second would be from Dazai's pov when they actually get together

Hmmmm… I like you. I think you could work well with a lot of people and make them quite happy. However, something in my gut likes best the idea of you with Anton.

Your MBTI, Enneagram, and self-description give me the impression of a really sweet person inclined to fairness, introversion, mediation, and good vibes in general. Maybe that’s why you fit so well with Anton; he also has this chill, no-drama vibe of just trying to live a good life being himself, being with you, and being happy. Lowkey, I’m assuming you went with the pacifist route in Undertale first and maybe only. This is such a “gimme” song and yet I don’t care! One, this is a super singable, sweet song that I can imagine translates well to a guitar. Three, it’s a lovely, mournful song that, I think, is kind of about a break up but could also reasonably be about long distance and forced separation. It’s perfect.

Your runner-ups are really fun because you could make fun couples or a throuple! I like Damien for you because he’s a Type Six in my opinion, and they’re supposed to make really lovely matches with Type Nines. (This is me and my best friend so confirmed.) i know if you go to them with open hands about how into crust u are they would welcome you and give you recs and support you, you just have to show u are into crust. there are a lot of people that come into crust punk without knowing what it is except for 'fashion', and crust punks are actively trying to remove 'fashion' punks from crust, so it doesn't become corporatised like punk rock did.

so i think with ur jacket not having any crust and your outfit of the day posts being non-crust music and your playlist not having crust on it until i assume someone said some horrible shit i think that becomes a point where the fear is realised as 'oh my god, here's another fashion-only prson who doesn't know/doesn't want to know what this is' and it puts this very tight-knit community on edge

that didn't give any one the right to be horrible about it tho like there are better way to do these things but crust is a negative-type community that is very violent? maybe? in various ways. full of people with big problems with a real hatred of the world. which is where that reaction came from. i honestly wouldn't take it to heart too hard and i know ur only a kid so that'll be very hard. but if u ever want to get more into crust i promise ask people for recs and they will help you and be so kind.

I appreciate this ask a lot! Funny thing is I'm mostly just not rlly labeling myself as crust anymore bc I'm not the biggest fan of the music in general and I don't wanna use the tags that are not accurate to me! I respect the crust community a lot and yall are always welcome here, I'm just more personally into what a lot of my asks have called "easier to listen to punk" I love the noise not music movement and I do listen to some death metal n stuff, but ska and ska punk are more my cup of tea yk!

The crust community is also, as you said, very full of (most of the time justified) violence and hatred, and as someone that is like an eco-anarcist, optimist punk, and just trying to consume as much positive content/ neutral content as possible it tends to not be my vibe! I totally understand why yall have the community tho as someone who is that kind of angry a lot if the time, yall are the people that make change, and when it is needed I join you, but at least rn, I won't be engaging with that (also due to personal circumstances)!

Also I understand how it gave that impression, I want to make it clear I understand that crust punk was/is a movement centered around the music, the heavy emphasis on politics, and the anger towards the systems that push us down. "Crust pants/jackets" are just things to show that! I very clearly do not fit one of those criterias tho and that's ok! I don't have to use the label crust punk to still be someone who is a valid member of the punk subculture! Plus, yall don't need to know what exact labels I use anyway lol. I think part of the reason I over exaggerate my place in other peoples lives is because i see everyone around me as a specific aesthetic/vibe and I start to make subconscious assumptions about the way you "should" act based on the clues I have put together from what I've been told about you and where I've filled in the gaps of things you probably do but that causes me to mix up the real things like feelings and attraction because I either end up loving this idea I've created of who you are with all these added fake pros and cons or I end up becoming obsessed with you because im trying so hard to keep things clear as to what is real or not and then you end up being weirded out anyways. It's so hard to form real relationships with people because in the beginning of a friendship I can usually make you a Pinterest board and a playlist and concoct a bunch of things that equal you in my brain so I know what to send you memes of or see things that remind me of you constantly and that's so fun when you're first talking to me and either we grow close enough that me doing that actively keeps us in contact bc we always have something to talk about or our friendship falls apart and I'm left with all these pictures songs and subjects that remind me of you and hurt every time I see them and it's such a shitty feelings because all of my friendships end becuase i care too much and can't give people space to breathe. I just hate hate hate hate hate being uncertain of my place in peoples lives it's absolutely soul crushing to me I'd rather have someone have the balls to tell their real thoughts and feelings about me even if it hurts than have someone ghost me and play pretend and slowly creep away from me like they're afraid of me when I try so fucking hard to make a full safe environment for someone but that loops back to my crazy finding your specific aesthetic thing cause that can be overwhelming and scary but I usually ask first and I definitely offer to show someone their Pinterest board or playlist and every person I've shown has been excited to see their aesthetic and see how accurate it is and it's been positive but then people end up leaving anyways and it just fucks with my brain and I know I have so many issues but like fuck man I have so much fucking admiration for everyone I've ever been friends with even if I'm fucking bitter about how things ended and that they couldn't just be straight up with me (and bitter that my last few friendships ended with me saying "look man are we friends or not I need a straight answer cause I'm not gonna keep putting effort into being your friend if you don't want me to be your friend anymore") I still admire them so much but do I admire them as a person (who was shitty to me in real life) or do I admire them as this idealized person I created in my brain (even the idealized person has flaws tho. Like even in my brain they appear human and normal and flawed and I still love them and want them regardless and it's almost like I prepare myself to be hurt in certain ways and then they always find new ways to hurt me I haven't thought of yet) it's almost like I'm willing to look past the shitty ways you treated me in real life because at least I have this fake version and it's cool to talk to someone the fake version was made for and then it's like I'd rather keep this perfect version in my brain where everything's predictable and people dont randomly change their mind or act nice and then change and act horrible and like feelings dont get hurt in my brain that only ever happens in real life and I dont like it I'm very tired of it I just want everyone to do what I think constantly like I'm playing Barbie's as a child. Everyone should behave the way people should and stop being mean to everyone else always and if you are mean you should do it in a good way that only my brain decided was the good way.

henry’s pov

henry watched as the doctor scrambled for the paddles and the nurse started doing chest compressions on alex

he didn’t know if the doctors knew he was there but soon they probably would if he sobbed loudly

“charging... clear!”

the anaesthesiologist took the oxygen tube, which connected to the machine, out of henry’s mouth and the nurse removed her hands just in time as the shock was delivered

both the nurse and doctor, as well as henry, looked at the heart monitor

no change

the nurse immediately went back to doing chest compressions as the doctor waited for the paddles to recharge

“charging... clear!”

it was a routine that went on for two minutes and henry started to panic

he felt his hands fidgeting with the strap across his chest

henry caught attention of the doctor who took a step back and shook his head at the nurse

the nurse didn’t stop but instead nudged her head towards henry’s direction

henry’s panic only became worse when the doctor turned around and saw him and went wide eyed

the doctor quickly turned back to look at his patient and then back at henry and then grabbed the paddles immediately

“charging... clear!”

no change happened but he looked at the nurse

“go find me as much ice as you can and bring it here. im not having the death of the first son of the united states on my hands”

the nurse immediately ran out and almost came back immediately with two buckets and placed it around alex’s head

henry’s panic kept rising as he watched the clock

“come on love. don’t do this to me” henry whispered

“don’t leave me”

“charging... clear!”

the nurse resumed compressions

“it’s almost four minutes doctor”

henry thought he squeaked at that and he knew he did when the nurse looked at him

henry knew not all medical shows weren’t accurate that didn’t mean he didn’t research stuff afterwards

but henry knew that after four minutes there would be permanent brain damage

henry watched as the doctor charged the paddles

“history, huh? bet we could make some” henry whispered to himself

henry looked down at his feet as he listened to the doctor deliver the last shock which would help prevent permanent brain damage

he didn’t think he could move after he watched alex laying lifeless on the table for nearly four minutes

he turned around and saw the doctor there looking at him

“apologies your royal highness. im sorry you had to witness that”

henry held back the urge to roll his eyes

“the first son is in a stable condition and hopefully he will make a full recovery. we will have to keep him here for awhile to see if there is any brain damage due the amount of time he was deprived of oxygen”

henry just nodded and the doctor looked at him

“i know im not to speak to like this in front of a royal but he is one lucky bastard”

henry smiled at that and laughed smally

“that he is” henry replied

the doctor nodded and moved his head in the direction of the exit and showed him to alex’s private room

when the doctor reached it with henry he turned around when he heard his sister yell out his name

“you do rather need to be quiet in places like this bea”

“im sorry but i did call out for you four times but your brain was clearly preoccupied with the thoughts of your fiancé being okay”

henry sucked in a breath as the doctor looked at him

“i will not speak a word” he said simply as he held the door open for bea and himself

the two of them stepped in and bea handed him a bag with some clothes in it

“please do get changed so we can burn that uniform. i don’t want to see it again”

“when did you have time to get the clothes?”

“well when you originally told me to go get them i went downstairs and got shaan and zahra and then when i was waiting out there i got bored so i decided to go home and get you some clothes and eat your hidden stash of jaffa cakes”

henry listened to his sister and went into the bathroom and stopped out of the uniform

“you know what have a shower too” bea called out

henry did do that because he needed something to clear his thoughts before he sat down beside alex’s bed for the next god knows how many days waiting for him to wake up

henry felt clean when he stepped out of the shower and felt comfortable when he pulled out his sweatpants and the alex’s shirt

when henry stepped out, he saw bea had taken occupant of the lounge as she channel surfed so it left henry with the chair next to alex’s hand no doubt bea doing it on purpose

henry sat down and took hold of alex’s hand just as zahra and shaan burst into the room

“shhhh!” bea scolded

shaan shot bea a look but zahra’s eyes were focused on the rise and fall of alex’s chest

“i have to call ellen” zahra stepped out of the room, shaan not far behind

shaan and zahra never came back in and henry could only presume they were standing outside guarding the door

it had been hours since henry last ate and he was starting to get hungry but as if bea knew she left and immediately came back with food for henry

IN ANY CASE THOUGH; my favorite songs (in no particular order) are probably kick in the eye, in the flat field, and telegram sam. i think bauhaus's music caught me so off guard at first because their music truly just does not sound like anything else i've ever heard — most of their songs took me a few listens to even get in to, actually, their sound is just so affectionally bizarre and hollow and. well. Goth. BUT I DO REALLY REALLY LIKE IT A LOT......... thank you very much for the recommendations cause i enjoyed them so much and cannot wait to listen to more :'D my favorite song overall is probably mask's title track.. it makes me feel like i'm in a different Dimension. i love it so much

hm hmmmm... if you're looking for more older goth rock music i like siouxsie and the banshees. they're similar in style to bauhaus for sure !!! this one especially is comparable, and it reminds me of post death c!q. obsession is my favorite by them (both the one with vocals and just the instrumenal), its a c!dream song I Love It. haven't listened to a full album by them yet but i rlly want to listen to all of A Kiss In The Dreamhouse because cascade is another rlly good one.

and if you're looking for something more like modest mouse/chasing around men with a garden house/indie rock which. i have been absolutely MESMERIZED by the beauty of indie rock lately calli. its kinda ridiculous how into this genre i am but. i've been listening to this band called Wolf Parade and I'm In Love with their album Apologies to the Queen Mary. if i could make a two part pmv!!! to Dear sons and daughters of hungry ghosts and I'll believe in anything that's c!wilbur centric... well. i spent too much time doing research to make the details of this accurate  and absolutely no one is going to fact check me so why did i even bother lmao. also please keep in mind that this is like... based on an actual job i have so sometimes i talk a little too much about the catering IM SORRY but i hope no one’s too bored by it!!! It’s your first day on the job.

You check your texts one more time just to be sure. “Park in the parking deck, then proceed around the right side of the building and come in the back doors. Call Gabrielle if you have any problems.” You grab your purse from the passenger seat and get out of your car, making your way down the staircase to the bottom level. Per the instructions, you walk around to the side of the building and spot a set of doors. Just to be sure, you peek through the windows. A large group of people mill around a side lobby, folding napkins and arranging flowers. Not too hard.

You push open the doors, and decide to just ask the first person you can. “Hi, do you know where I can find Gabrielle?”

A boy with dark and curly hair turns from his napkin folding to look up at you. “Yeah, she’s in the kitchen. You know where that is?” You shake your head. “I can take you.”

He places his finished napkin onto the pile with the rest and gets up from his chair, leading you down the hallway and past the reception room where you can see chairs all set up. The kitchen is not what you expected– it’s a lot less nice than you would think a hotel like this would have, but a group of about six people are hard at work putting together charcuterie boards. “That’s Gabrielle right there,” the boy points. You thank him and he leaves to go back to the napkins. 

“Hi, Gabrielle,” you say, catching her attention. “I’m Y/N.”

Gabrielle is taping table lists to the wall of the kitchen, and turns at the sound of your voice. “Oh, hello Y/N! Welcome.” She sticks out her hand for a shake. “We’re glad to have you, thanks for being on time. Weddings are always busy nights. We’re getting ready to start warming food, if you want you can help the boys finish napkins up front, then we’ll have our meeting. Don’t forget to clock in.”

You nod, and go back to the table in the side lobby. The boy you spoke with first shows you the fold for the napkins that creates a little pocket you can stick the silverware in. Within a few minutes, you’ve folded all the napkins. The boys begin to introduce themselves. 

Theo is the boy you first spoke to. Blaise invented this particular napkin fold, or so he says. Vincent and Greg don’t say much; they’re sharing airpods, but flash you silent peace signs all the same. Everyone is about your age, in college or just out of it. Gabrielle calls everyone back to the kitchen, where the people making the cheese boards are already in a small room off the kitchen, changing into their uniforms. Gabrielle grabs a stiff white dress shirt, silky tie, and black vest off the rack for you, labeled with a tiny piece of tape with your name on it. 

It’s now you realize you’re only one of three girls working, excluding Gabrielle. Gabrielle catches sight of you standing awkwardly outside the room, and barks for all the boys to finish changing outside. There’s lots of grumbling, but most have already pulled on their dress shirts. You and the other girls go into the room and close the door behind you. 

“Are you new?” One girl asks immediately as you start to change.

“Yeah, this is my first night.”

“Oh, fun. I think you’ll like it, we have a pretty good time.” She’s already moved on to her tie, while you’re still struggling to button your shirt. It’s a men’s shirt, so they’re backwards. “Just make sure to work really hard this time. First impressions matter most to Gabrielle.”

“Thanks…?”

“Pansy,” she says, slipping on her vest and tucking the end of her tie into the waistband of her black dress pants. “And that’s Astoria.”

Astoria smiles at you. “It’s true. Most of the boys are slackers, so as long as you’re just a little more productive than them you should be in the clear.”

You all giggle. Pansy shoves her normal shirt into her purse, and leaves the little room, and Astoria leaves a few moments after her. They leave the door open, since you’ve finally gotten your shirt on and tucked in. It’s when you peer into the tiny mirror over the sink in the corner that it dawns on you; you have no idea how to tie your tie. You look out into the kitchen at everyone else, and then turn back to the mirror, trying in vain to recreate the neat knot they all have at their necks. 

“Want some help?’’

You turn around to see one of the boys from the kitchen leaning against the door frame. His bleached hair and chiseled jaw had caught your eye when you had first walked in, but you hadn’t had much time to take a good look. You certainly were now, though.

He motions again to your tie with a tilt of his head. You blink away your Attractive Man Spotted daze and take a few steps towards him. He takes the two ends of your tie hanging around your neck and adjusts the length before crossing them over, over, around and through. “See, and now you can just tighten it,” he says, letting the tie hang around your neck.

“C-could you do it again?” You ask. “So I can learn.”

The edges of his lips quirk up. “Sure.”

So he does. You really are paying attention to the tying, but also to his extremely attractive hands as they settle against your throat when he tightens the tie for you. “You’ve got to do this top button as well,” he says, pulling the collar of your shirt together. His fingers are warm against your skin. “Sorry, it’s always a little tight.”

“It’s fine,” you manage to get out. 

Gabrielle calls for everyone’s attention, and blonde boy gives you one more smile before turning away. She explains how passing a bussing are going to work for the night. She announces that you, Pansy, Vincent and Greg will pass while everyone else ‘flips’ the ceremony room to prepare it for the reception. You try to keep up with what Gabrielle’s saying, but in the end just decide if you’re following everyone else’s lead then you’ll be fine. One of the kitchen workers has set out four trays of various appetizers. You grab a stack of napkins and a tray of shrimp skewers and follow Pansy out into the lobby.

Passing isn’t too hard. All you have to do is wander between the guests, and most of them will take the food off the tray with minimal interaction. The women always want a napkin. The men always insist they’re fine without. Whenever your tray is empty, you go back to the kitchen and someone will refresh it for you. A very easy cycle. One group of girls is particularly enthusiastic about the shrimp, and over the course of the cocktail hour they wave you over and take your shrimp two at a time as they become progressively more drunk. 

Gabrielle stops the four of you passing and you all go back into the kitchen, as they let the guests come in to the newly transformed ballroom. Blonde boy appears at your side and takes one of the leftover mini beef-wellington bites Pansy had been passing from her tray. “We can eat them?” You ask.

He nods. “As long as we’ve fed the guests, it’s fair game. Try one, they’re good.”

You and Pansy both take one off the tray. They are pretty good. “This is Y/N, it’s her first night.” Pansy says.

“Oh, nice,” blonde boy replies. “I wouldn’t have known you were new. I’m Draco, by the way.”

“Nice to meet you.” Draco, Draco, Draco. You’re determined to remember his name, feeling slightly embarrassed you’d already forgotten the name of one of the other boys you folded napkins with.

The bride and groom have their first dance, and guests have their salad course while someone from the bridal party makes a speech. Gabrielle snaps her fingers and tells everyone to start bussing so they can get the main course out. 

Draco and the other workers who helped flip bus with you and the other passers. Bussing is just as easy to pick up as passing was, and soon there’s a smooth flow in and out of the kitchen of everyone carrying dishes. Balancing the dirty dishes on your tray isn’t too hard, and you just have to remind yourself to switch arms every so often to keep your wrists from hurting. By the time you’re bringing back people’s dishes from finishing the main courses, you notice Vincent and Greg sitting on the dish crates, taking a break and sitting on their phones. Astoria walks past and gives you a pointed look. You smile a little to yourself as you scrape off the plates, put them in the dirty dish bins and head back out onto the floor. 

By nine-thirty, things have started to slow down. There’s not many people left eating their dinner, save for a few who are hoarding their plate to continue eating rolls. You’re standing by one of the pillars in the ballroom, scanning the tables for something to pick up, when Draco appears next to you again. 

“How’s it going?” He leans in close so you can hear him over the loud music. 

Mmm, his cologne is nice. “Good, it’s making me a little hungry though.”

“There’s always extra, ask next time you go back.” He checks his watch. “Let’s start picking up the charger plates. We’ll do cake soon.”

You nod, and he walks off. Back in the kitchen, Pansy and you take a five minute break to eat some leftover rolls and asparagus. After the bride and groom cut the cake, two of the boys bring it back and the kitchen workers start cutting slices and putting them onto trays. Passing the cake has been the easiest thing all night, and everyone takes a break in the kitchen for a minute once it’s done. A dozen leftover slices are all scattered across the metal counter, and everyone takes one. You can hear all the guests screaming the lyrics to “Come On Eileen” through the wall. 

You and Astoria watch Draco and Pansy have a heated friendly argument while you finish your cake, and then it’s time for a final round of bussing. Everything comes off the tables. Once you’re sure all the glasses and plates are put into the bins, Gabrielle tells everyone you can change back into your normal clothes. After a final sweep of the ballroom for any silverware that might’ve fallen on the ground, you’re free to go. Pansy and Draco walk with you to the parking deck.

“When should I clock out?” You open the app on your phone, looking down at the button.

“Wait until you get in your car, that’s what I always do,” Pansy says.

“Like, really wait,” Draco adds. “Phone plugged in, music ready. But don’t drive away, it tracks your location.”

You chuckle. “Noted.”

“Are you working tomorrow?” He asks.

“No, just once this weekend. Next week I’m on Saturday and Sunday, though.”

“Cool, maybe I’ll see you.” He and Pansy need to go up one more level to get to their cars, so you part ways. You take Draco’s advice and get settled before clocking out.
