I absolutely adore this project and since I've been thinking about my own xenomoggy WIP a lot recently, I now have a bunch of very niche questions.

1) How similar to real-world felines are these guys? Like, what things can they eat? Are citrus-like fruits poisonous to them? Are things like mint poisonous?

2) Are they obligate carnivores or do they lean a bit more omnivorous, like canines?

3) Can they taste sweetness? If so, what kind of sweet food do they eat?

4) How technologically advanced are they? Do they cook their food? If they do, what foods are different in each pride? Do they use spices?

5) Can they make tea? Because the idea of someone's mother or friends making them tea when they're upset/sad is absolutely adorable.

Sorry for the obnoxious amount of questions, this project is giving me major brainworms 😅

I kinda just dumped these thoughts into point form in the notes app so I'm giving you these answers fresh and unadulterated

There's a solid mix of fantasy and realism. For instance, their colour vision is roughly equal to ours, but they still have good night vision (or maybe it's just that two moons means the night vision isn't actually as good). Overall anatomy and function is otherwise p similar (which some exceptions) and I do have thoughts on what they eat.

Their diet relies heavily on meat, but fruits and mushrooms frequently end up in the mix. Canines are a good comparison!

The acidic aspect of citrus-like fruits wouldn't appeal to them, and they still can't taste sweet, but other more mild fruits have high water content that make them an important addition to the diet even if the taste doesn't appeal.

Mushrooms are important because they are the only thing that really actively grows during the Sleeping Year, but they don't contain much water. Still, nutrients is nutrients.

There's also a number of plants that can be safely ingested and which can provide medicinal value, but here's something most people don't realize: medicine is usually just poison, but in small enough amounts to help you instead of kill you.

Regardless, most of the plants are made-up (the ones that aren't, still have different names (what im saying is most ppl wouldn't realize they are real)) so the I Do What I Want rule applies to poison vs medicine vs edible uwu

Unsure of the specifics of cooking yet, though it's a tentative yes. Strongly considering giving Goldspring a sort of endless stew situation that they just keep adding to and maintain for the course of a year. Fire is risky business in this setting, but given the fact they live in a volcanic region, there are other ways to cook one's food. Hell, maybe that's what allowed these cat societies to exist in the first place

spices is an interesting question, like I'd guess they would mix foods for the sake of taste so it doesn't seem too much a stretch that they would add in normally non-edible plants to enhance flavour. So yeah, it prolly happens.

Teas would mostly be medicinal, and probably frequently mixed with animal blood. Everyone complains about it but at least it does what the healers say it does. Plus, the inability to taste sweet I think would take most of the pleasure out of it??? Listen I don't drink tea but if someone who does has a better take, I'm all ears lol

As for their technological advancement, think of humans around mid ice age era. They have elegantly designed tools (ranging from knives to sewing needles to hammers), impressive leatherworking (tanning, cleaning, sewing), some textiles (associated dyes included), and limited infrastructure (consisting largely of living infrastructure woven from milksap aerial roots and occasional supports and modifications to existing natural shelters, also natural paths are maintained throughout the area)

But they lack weaponry (hard-baked into honour code systems that are enforced by the prides) and anything requiring multiple bodies to build/maintain (can't sustain population density). No farming (though I'm itching for some Weird Bird Domestication taking its first shaky steps in one of the prides, prolly Bogden)

She looks so peaceful, her long lashes brushing on top of her cheeks and her mouth partially open as she sleeps in front of him. He wasn’t expecting to wake up sooner than she did but he was glad he was, choosing to admire Beatrice’s sleeping form was a great way to start his morning. They were on day four of their honeymoon, there were other things they had to do but right now he just wanted to look at her.

He smiles sweetly when she scrunches her nose in her sleep, burying her face into the pillow with a soft sigh, one of her hands tucked under her chin making Beatrice look like those posters depicting Sleeping Beauty, with her hair sprawled over the bed and pillow, looking like the angel she was.

It was still pretty early, he didn’t check his phone but if he had to guess it was barely seven am, Palermo sounded really lovely when waking up too. There was an elderly woman that usually sang down the street and they’ve heard her ever since they went to the hotel, and the birds that surrounded the building seemed to follow along by chirping with her.

This place was really magical, he had to admit. And while he took notice by Bea’s family, especially her aunt Martha, seeing it first hand was something else. He knew that her paternal family came from Sicily, pretty much every person and her maternal family was from Milan mainly with some cousins arriving from Spain to live in Venice and he wondered if they’d have the same kind of magical energy the others had.

Maybe it’d be possible, considering that Michael also referred to their mother as a ‘warlock of some sort’. His train of thought was interrupted by movement, more specifically Beatrice’s movement as she begins to wake up. He doesn’t say anything, he watches her bury her face into the pillow, then turn on her back and - much like a cat - arch her back and lift her arms to stretch, her hair still over her face and eyes.

Beatrice barely opens her eyelids, unfocused eyes meeting Rooster’s adoring gaze with a slow smile forming over her lips, “...hi…” she croaks, her voice dry from disuse - and something else - “mmmorning…”

“Morning, gorgeous, how did you sleep?”

Beatrice’s eyes blink heavily and she turns to lie on her stomach, humming sweetly with her cheek nestled on the soft pillow, “Fine…” she was trying to keep herself awake for a while longer, “I’m just…” a yawn, “I’m trying to stay away…”

“Away?” he chuckles, “You mean awake, gorgeous?”

“Mhm.” her eyes close again, “Away…”

“You are so cute.” he coos, leaning closer to kiss her forehead even if it was still covered by her hair, “Do you want to stay in bed for a little while longer? You seem very tired.” and he knew exactly why. Beatrice’s cheeks turned red when he spoke, blearily opening her eyes to give him an amused look the best she could considering how exhausted she appeared to be.

“I’m the only one, apparently.” she whispers, pushing herself closer to him so her cheek is against his chest and his arm immediately drops to her waist, gently rubbing the fabric of her sleeping shirt between his fingers, “Just a few more minutes.”

“I’m in no hurry.” he whispered, kissing the top of her head and keeping his lips there, “And I know you aren’t either.” she just hums back positively, pressing herself even closer to him, smiling when the hand touching her shirt slides down to get under the fabric and touch her butt.

“You have a fascination with my butt.” her eyes are closed and her eyebrows are up with amusement, snorting quietly when he squeezes the soft flesh, “I can’t believe you.”

“It’s a lovely piece of ass.” he jokes and Beatrice finally opens her eyes to give him an unamused glance, but smiles nonetheless, “So what are the plans for today?” he asks since she seems a bit more alert but still glued to his side.

Beatrice hums, blinking heavily with another yawn escaping her mouth as she props her chin on his pectoral, rubbing her eye with the tips of her fingers, “We can go to a cioccolateria first, get something sweet and some coffee and then we can…hm…” she blinks, “Then we can figure it out, I can’t explain too much when I’m just waking up, Roos.”

He just smiles, kissing her forehead, “Alright, well, when you do wake up we’ll figure out.” She hums happily, smiling sweetly at him before pushing herself to a sitting position, the movement making the shirt ride up her thighs and show just a bit more than before, much for his hungry eyes to travel all over.

“I’m going to take a quick shower, then we can go.” she says, already more awake than seconds before, combing her hair back the best she could all the while Rooster ran his eyes down her body with his fingers interlaced on top of his six pack, a little smirk on his face. Beatrice laughs quietly, making her way to her bag to choose what outfit she could wear that day.

It was still warm so she decided that a pair of shorts, an off shoulder cream colored blouse and her sneakers would be more than useful. “I’ll be right back.” He smirks even more, following her with his eyes until she disappears inside the bathroom.

With Beatrice gone he decided to check his phone to see if anyone else sent him messages besides Mav or the Dagger Squad. He runs his hand down his jawline when he sees his reflection on the screen only to feel the stubble beginning to form and immediately sits up, tossing his phone aside to grab the grooming bag that he often carried when deployed.

It only had a razor, shaving cream and lotion for his face once he’s done. It was minimal work, only enough to shave his face as clean as he could. And he hasn’t done it since they arrived at Palermo, it was surprising that he was seeing it just now.

Beatrice looks up from the shower when she hears him coming in, running her hands down her wet hair to get rid of the shampoo still clinging to the strands, watching her husband run his hand over his jawline and to his chin, turning the small light above the mirror to see his reflection better “Roos?” Her sweet voice calls and he flicks his gaze towards her briefly “Everything okay?”

“Yeah, gorgeous. Just need to shave,” he replies, pulling out his razor and tilting his head up to the mirror. Beatrice watches as Rooster turns his face left and right to have a good view of where to start first and her eyes drop to his thick neck. She really liked his neck, ever since the first time.

“Oh okay.” But her eyes remain on the way the razor drags down his sharp jawline and a bit of his throat, the suds of shaving foam sliding just a bit to his collarbone. She’s so focused on his neck she doesn’t notice him peeking at her by the corner of his eye, only being able to take her eyes away when his Adam’s apple bobs in a swallow. She snaps her eyes up to him, face flaming up when she sees his knowing smirk and quickly tries to get back to wash her hair.

And since Rooster’s stubble wasn’t that hard to get rid of, he gently sets the razor aside and with a quick hand movement drops his briefs down to his feet and steps into the shower. Beatrice didn’t seem surprised, if she was she didn’t show it, in fact she didn’t even look at him when he stepped in, “Do you need any help?”

“With?”

“Everything?”

Beatrice laughs sweetly, looking over her shoulder to where he was, biting her lower lip and giving him a coy shrug, “I mean, if my husband wants to give me an extra hand...” she says sweetly, not finishing the sentence and just goes back to her hair…that is if a pair of arms don’t hold her from behind and kisses drop all over from her shoulder to her neck, one of his hands going up until his thumb is right in between her breasts.

“I can give you more than one hand, gorgeous.” he chuckles against her ear, “I mean, we aren’t in a hurry to leave, right?”

His hand goes down her sternum to her stomach, “No…”

“And, we’ll have time to enjoy whatever we want later, right?”

It gets even lower and Beatrice hitches a breath of surprise, “R-Right…”

“Great,” he smiles, pulling her flush against him, “All I wanted to hear.”

They walk out of their room almost thirty minutes after they planned to, with both looking immensely satisfied and flushed beautifully. Rooster waits besides Beatrice so she could lock the door “I think going to the cioccolateria will be great, we can have some cappuccinos facing the beach, it’d be lovely.”

“Of course it will.” he grins, leaning his shoulder on the wall right next to the door as Beatrice locks it, “You said it has chocolate pastries and I’m all in for it.”

She giggles, looking up at him to kiss his lips before she puts the card inside her bag, walking alongside Rooster while pulling her phone out to check the map as they walk down the hallway. His hand was on her waist while the other stayed in his pocket, his smile only faltering when he saw the same group of women from the beach walking down the hall but in the opposite direction.

Oh so they were on the same floor as them, huh? Well, that’s interesting. His smile disappears completely and he tugs Beatrice to his side, Beatrice who’s excitedly telling him about the Museums nearby they could visit after having breakfast, his eyes narrowing when the group of women get closer. They don’t seem to notice them at first, but Rooster’s tall stature is hard to miss especially when they are in the same hallway.

They all look at him, especially the one from the beach, and immediately they decide that looking down at their phones and covering their faces with their hair was much better than meeting the furious gaze of a tall American pilot who got pissed off because they were talking shit about his wife.

He keeps his glare on them until they are away from his view, “- and then we can go to one of the shops nearby and get something!” he finally hears her voice again and his head jolts back to where she stood, looking up at him with a smile, one that makes his scowl disappear immediately, “What do you think?”

“I think it’s a great idea.” he grins, keeping his hand on her waist as they enter the elevator, “Anything with you will be really fun, gorgeous.” She kisses him again in thanks and Rooster lifts his head to see one of the girls peeking from the corner of the wall, only to widen her eyes and disappear when he looked less than pleased to see her there.

He doesn’t have time to get angry, they only had a few days of honeymoon left and they were going to visit her uncle before leaving Palermo, so he wasn’t going to let a group of girls annoy his perfect week with Beatrice. Beatrice takes hold of his hand when they walk out of the elevator, handing the woman at the front desk their room card so they could leave without worrying about losing it.

The cioccolateria was close to where they had the granita with brioches on the first day, the smell was already delicious from the hotel’s door and it only got better when they entered. It was like they entered a chocolate heaven and Rooster was ready to lose his mind the longer he looked at the fresh pastries being brought in from the kitchen.

Much like the time they first went to Mr.Scoops, Bradley was mesmerized by everything he saw and Beatrice looked at him fondly, “Let’s order something and find us a place to sit, okay?” he nods, looking at a chocolate roll that was in front of him inside a basket alongside other types of pastries and bread.

Beatrice has to tug him forward so they could choose what to eat, which honestly was already hard enough for him. It was a whole new world of chocolate goodness and he was a bit overwhelmed, “I have no idea what to choose.” he confesses, “But that cake looks really good.”

“I think that’s a coffee mousse cake.”she explains, “I kinda want the sfogliatella, see?” she points to the flaky pastry with a smile, “I haven’t had one in years.” she gives Rooster a brief explanation about it before they decide to order. She speaks to the woman behind the counter, explaining what they wanted before she takes Rooster to a table that is located directly to where they could see the ocean.

Beatrice sits down while supporting her chin on her hand, smiling dreamily at the horizon with her wedding band glinting under the sunlight,”This is a beautiful place.” This isn’t the first time he says it but Beatrice couldn’t help but agree with him with a nod, “I wouldn’t mind coming here more often.”

She turns her head towards him in surprise, “Wait, really?”

“Yeah, if we are able and I’m not deployed then I don’t see why not.” he shrugs while leaning back against the chair, hooking his sunglasses on his V neck’s collar, “We can rent a house for a few days instead of a hotel, enjoy the markets more than just walking by…those things.”

Beatrice’s cheeks flush a soft red and her gaze turns fond, “I’d like that a lot Roos, I really do. And you know, since I have relatives that still live here, it helps when finding a place to stay too…not that we’ll stay with my uncle Roberto, Jesus.”

“He’s not that bad.”

Beatrice just gives him a look, “He’s like Michael if Michael was sixty years old.” she huffs a laugh, “He’s the wild child within my nonna’s children. He stole a horse once,” Rooster’s eyebrows furrow, the obvious question as to where he got a horse on the tip of his tongue, “He was dating this girl whose dad had like those horse camps, she broke up with him, he stole one of the horses and rode it all the way to my nonna’s house.”

Bradley laughs quietly, remembering how Roberto looked and having to admit he had a strong resemblance to Michael, especially with the long hair that he usually kept in a pompadour almost and the many golden chains on his neck, “How long was your uncle in the army?”

“I can’t say, Roos.” she shrugs, “I just remember coming to visit him here from a very young age, so.” she looks up when the waitress arrives with their food, thanking her and smiling when she notices the flower biscuits on top of the whipped cream at her cappuccino, “He’s my godfather, you know?”

“Really?” Beatrice nods, “I had no idea.”

“Yeah, well, it wasn’t planned because…you know I wasn’t planned. But he stepped up to the game, he always did his best. And I love him,I know I make fun of him but like I said, he’s like Michael so I can’t not love him.”

He smiles when she explains it and he had to admit that the love she had for Roberto was similar to the one he had for Pete. He was also his godfather and his uncle, so he understood when Beatrice spoke so fondly of him, “Well, he seemed really fun at the wedding.”

“Ah,” Beatrice laughs, bringing the cappuccino to her lips, “Before or after drinking? You know we like to call him Shrimp because he gets red so quickly it’s insane.” and her uncle always got beet red whenever inebriated. “I hope that this boat he got is at least somewhat new,” she begins, “I mean,I don’t know he never mentioned wanting one before but knowing him he probably got it from a guy he met at the supermarket months ago.”

Bradley nods, but he’s trying hard to not make a scene while eating the coffee chocolate mousse cake with tiny dark chocolate disks on top. It was way too good, “He makes friends easily, what’s wrong with that?”

Beatrice just rolls her eyes playfully, “I suppose so. Oh!” she quickly pulls out her phone, “I have to take a picture of this and send it to Michael. He loves sfogliatella and he’ll be so mad.” she giggles impishly after saying that, holding the phone right on top of the pastry and making sure to have the perfect angle, “There!” she immediately sends it to him with the same little smile.

“You are cruel.”

“I can be.” she says sweetly, shrugging at him before looking down at the photo gallery, smiling at the pictures they took together. There weren’t many, honestly they were so busy enjoying the trip they didn’t even think about taking the pictures. Beatrice smiles down at her phone before her eyes travel to Rooster who is clearly enjoying having dessert for breakfast yet again, “You seem to be enjoying yourself.”

“Baby, it’s chocolate.” he emphasizes, gesturing to the slice with his fork, “How am I not going to enjoy it?”

“Fair,” she giggles, then takes a bite of her own pastry, cupping below it to hold the flaky pieces that broke when she bit down, “Were you,”she covers her mouth to chew and then continues her questioning, “Were you always a chocolate lover?”

“Oh yeah,” he chuckles, sipping his expresso and making a pleased face at how strong it was, “I loved it from birth I think. My mom loved chocolate, more than me.” he smiles sweetly, looking to the side, “There was a brand she loved a lot, always had it at home whenever possible. I remember asking Pete about it and he said it was the brand my dad got for her on their first anniversary together.”

Beatrice’s eyebrows lowered with a small smile, “That’s really sweet,Brad.”

He licks his lips,”Yeah,” the fork taps on the side of the porcelain plate, “When she got sick she couldn’t eat it anymore, doctor’s orders…but hell, the times I’d catch her trying to sneak a bite…I couldn't even count how many.” his smile drops diminutively, his tongue poking his cheek as he tries to control his emotions, “You know what’s funny though? She hated white chocolate.” he tried to change the subject and Beatrice wasn’t going to stop it, “And I mean she hated it, she didn’t consider it chocolate, she called it ‘sweet butter’.”

“I mean, you don’t like white chocolate either.”

“And I never will.” he finishes his sentence by plopping another piece of the cake in his mouth. “‘Cause it’s not chocolate.”

Beatrice’s smile only widened as he spoke. She knew how hard it was to speak about his mom and she never pressured him into talking more than he felt like sharing, but she was glad he trusted her enough to talk about Carole more often. “Thank God our wedding cake didn’t have any.” she jokes, sipping her cappuccino while laughing.

Bradley chuckles along, leaning back on his seat to run his fingers through his hair, “I mean, people who hated chocolate weren’t invited.”

“That’s true.” Beatrice giggles, “If they were we didn’t see them.”

And they shared another laugh, living in their own little world bubble, almost forgetting there were other people around. It was how it always was too, they had each other and the world was just there, just around them, “Where do you want to go from here?” he asks after the laughter subsides, taking yet another bite of the cake and gasping in delight at the huge piece of chocolate mousse sticking on top of his fork.

“Oh! I don’t know, I mean our options are all over and there are places that sell tickets on the spot. Honestly we can just walk around, check some other places, buy some stuff, who knows! Honestly I don’t mind…although the walking might work because we need to settle this breakfast down.”

“Fair enough.” he smiles, seeing Beatrice pick her phone again to check if Michael replied, “Baby, we are in a different timezone, it’s probably the middle of the night for Michael.”

Beatrice hums, “I guess so, but he has insomnia, he usually replies quickly.” but she shrugs, “You are right, he’ll reply when he can, he’s probably watching some movies right now. I did tell him he could watch everything but porn, because that’d be traumatizing for me.”

“Fair enough.” he chuckles after finishing the cake, leaning back on his chair with a sigh, “This was incredible. Fuckin’ great.”

“I might try to make it at home, that and the sfogliatella.”

He opens his eyes at her after closing him in complete bliss, “If you do I might just marry you again.” she laughs again, dabbing the napkin over her lips gently, “I’m serious.”

“I know you are Roos.” she says, finishing her coffee, still grinning “I know you are.”

hi! i hope this isnt inappropriate or weird to ask, but im pretty new to mxtx's works so im still learning everything about the state of things so im kinda just asking when i see things to be curious about, but what is the problem with starember? all i know is they are the manhuajia for the tcgf manhua

sorry for taking so long to reply, couldn't find my previous answer on this and talking in detail about starember shaves about 15 years off my lifespan on average so let's get to the nazi lotr incest art they drew - which is from 2015 but was still up on their lofter a while ago. can't be bothered to check if it's still up but considering everything else it doesn't even matter. continues under the cut

their stans who swear starember is just a uwu small asian bean who can't possibly know wrong from right will bring up that it's old art but they're still drawing incredibly fucking colorist/racist and sometimes borderline pedo shit so it's not a "they grew out of it" situation

about the manhua: it goes an extra mile to exacerbate the racism/colorism that already exists in the novel by whitewashing the characters to hell and back - the most egregious example being that, while xie lian was already pale in the earlier chapters, they actually went back to redraw him even lighter, with "daintier" features and light eyes. see the comparison below

the banyue arc is a racist mess in all adaptations so this isn't exclusive to the manhua but it does make this issue even more obvious. another example: they went out of their way to make hua cheng dark skinned in fanart to drive the point that he's monstrous

overall if someone likes starember/the manhua it's a canary in a coalmine situation - 90% chance if you ever criticize starember or mxtx they'll call you a stupid westerner who's actually the racist one, even when they're westerners themselves. as for minor gripes, even without all of this the manhua would still be a garbage adaptation that butchers the characterization and several plot points for the sake of being generic danmei fanfic #6654651, and the art is ugly as shit. that's about it

ANYWAYS no truly one of the most baffling characters in the franchise and i am desperately fascinated with whatevers going on inside his head . frankly every single one of his actions in regards to dl-6 on every front follow like no logical pathway i can discern and its truly something to behold. like whats wrong with you (rhetorical question - more interesting if we dont get an answer).

tldr: dahlia should get to kill and ruin whoevers lives she wants i support her unconditionally (no this does not conflict with my diego opinions. i can hold multitudes) un-tldr: to be honest her in-game writing kind of sucks (spectacular essay written on this here, which frankly puts it better than i ever could. thats the problem with this part im trying to think of opinions that arent covered in that but like it really hits all of them) but nonetheless as a notable fan of the Fey Family Period Drama how could i not love dahlia given that shes like one of the key pieces of evidence of the mass destruction that the current system in kurain causes to everybody it touches. "wahhh she was just Born Evil" not listening dont care. people also hate her for being mean to phoenix i think but i dont care about that either they just hate to see a girlboss winning. or losing tbh because thats like 80% of what dahlia did. but like still the spirit is there. also to be honest it kills me that we got like no elaboration on her relationship with iris because thats like actually SO interesting its so interesting but we get NOTHINGGGGGGGGG because the aa writers hate dahlia and they hate ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but anyways yeah if dahlia wants to maim and kill well then i support her #feminism #womensupportingwomen #terrymightnothavebeenamurderer #buthesurewasapedophile!

1. a book that is close to your heart

there are a few books i could name, but i'm going to do the one i thought of first.

a girl of the limberlost. i only remember reading it once, but my mother is the one who gave it to me, and told me that it was a book she loved at my age at the time. (same with the secret garden.) so i can't think of that book without thinking of her, which makes it a little bit more special to me <3

13. your favorite romance novel

immediate impulse is to say legends and lattes by travis baldree bc. it's so good. however, while there is a romance i don't know if i would count it as a romance novel.

so.

the lady's guide to celestial mechanics. historical, sapphic, featuring both women in STEM (or, yknow, historical equiv) but also an appreciation for domestic arts / crafts normally looked down on. also there's an acknowledgement that homophobia existed, but there's none on page.

the prose is also gorgeous.

i don't actually read a ton of romance novels, but i've been trying to pick up more!

okay, so. if you are. remotely squeamish, like. at all? you might wanna give this one a pass. (def check storygraph / other places for trigger warnings. im also happy to elaborate myself, lol.) i am. very squeamish, and made it through only because the story grabbed me tight and wouldn't let go. the worldbuilding is extremely interesting. the characters are all very different and both likeable and unlikeable in a million different ways. but.

oh boy, it was a tough one.

if you're NOT squeamish, though--

it was a 4 or 5 star read for me, iirc, so, y'know. recommended. not sure i'll ever pick it up again, but like. do not regret reading.

130. a book featuring flashbacks and/or intersecting storylines

i know i've read others like this, but the book that comes to mind is--and i had to google this bc it's been so long since i read it---Thirst by Christopher Pike. It was also published under "The Last Vampire." i don't actually recommend them; i read them during my middle school vampire phase and even i remembered being a little mindboggled. mainly bc i think there was an alien abduction in... the second or third book? idk, i had an omnibus.

there's only one answer i can give to this, tbh. the locked tomb series brainrot is real and deep and i am. both highly anticipating and dreading the release of alecto so.

i gotta recommend Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir.

that SAID, i am well aware that this book has a reputation on tumblr esp for being poorly summarized, as the most oft-used pitch is "lesbian necromancers in space."

this is not an inaccurate summary.

BUT.

it is also not complete.

so first, some expectations: it's sci-fi, definitely, but also there are a lot of fantasy vibes? probably because of the swords and the necromancy and the sworn knights-esque plot. uh. basically, it's sci-fi like star wars is sci-fi, but also it's. it's not star wars.

second thing: this series is unreliable narrator central. tamsyn picks the least qualified person in the group for you to follow the story with, and it works. so well. like, firstly bc ofc things get explained (some; it does drop you in and expect you to pick up a lot through context clues) but ALSO because you WILL pick up things you didn't on re-reads. i did a reread before Nona and spent half of it screaming. i'm not much of an annotator beyond highlighting some lines on kindle but i was commenting all over the place.

uh.

i still haven't talked about the plot, my bad.

Gideon the Ninth follows the titular Gideon, after her childhood nemesis and heir to the Ninth House, is invited to the First House by the God Emperor of the Nine Houses to seek quasi-immortality and join him in fighting a war as old as the Houses themselves. When they get there, though, they soon find their fellow heir-and-cavalier pairs being picked off one by one.

this book also features a lot of gay... not pining, not really, but like. Gideon likes women and her pov spends a lot of time appreciating the other women with them xD (this is also part of what makes her unreliable as a narrator. plot? what plot? gideon is here for thirsting, and a little bit of pining.)

also mild enemies to lovers vibes.

ALSO there are memes. there's a none pizza left beef joke in book 2, i'm still not over it.

does get a little squicky at times with loving descriptions of bones and viscera, though.

if i keep talking about this book i won't ever stop <3

Your answer to the byzantine uwu is quite wrong I fear, why are you mixing ancient Greek and Roman polytheism relationships with the Christians? I understand anon was wrong but your answer fell into a pot pf stereotypes and vague generalization that is not accurate. im saying it friendly because I like ur blog a lot but this answer felt not good at all. also situation for Roman women was different from the Greek ones and even so archaeological recent studies have discarded the idea of women locked at homes doing nothing.

Hi! This answer was indeed full of generalizations and there is greater nuance to be found in the relationships between men and women, as well as women's presence when it comes to what was acceptable for the Polytheistic Roman religion and what really happened.

I need to note that while women were not locked at home, I was mostly referring to the social ideal of women having the home as their domain (which doesn't mean "sitting at home and doing nothing"). This ideal became less prominent as Christianity came along. Of course Christianity came with its own restrictions but the Christian belief that everyone - rich, poor, slave, women, children, men - being equals in the eyes of God, changed "the place of women" in a positive way.

One last detail the people forget: Greeks were Romans. After the Greek lands became part of the Empire, Greeks were officially Romans - and also called themselves Romans until the 19th century. So Greek women WERE "Roman women".

Polytheism differed a bit in the Greek and Italian peninsula but people in Greece, as in all the other parts of the Roman empire, were obliged to follow the Roman state religion "Religio Romana" which was a mix of different Polytheistic practices. So there would be many similarities between the two peninsulas regarding "the place of women".

To be clear, I received this ask at 6:00 in the morning and frankly, I couldn't be bothered to make a very detailed answer, especially when the ask itself was so condescending and very absolute. That's why some things were not phrased that clearly and they didn't express my full intent.

I aimed to explain why there was such intense enmity between the Polytheists and Christians at the time, and to demonstrate that you cannot point fingers at one group while the group you support did the exact same thing. If the ask was phrased like "Don't you think it's terrible that the Byzantines killed Polytheists?" my answer would be different.

I would say that, first of all, it wasn't acceptable or legal to kill people on the basis of their religion even though the Polytheistic faith was suppressed with other means. I don't doubt that some Polytheists were killed because of their faith (because extremists exist everywhere) but it was not acceptable or common in the Empire after Christianity became the official religion. It was illegal to kill any person, including Polytheists.

Even the rumors about a Christian secret constitution where Polytheists were tortured and killed (sorry, I cannot recall the name now) have been refuted by historians. Of course, I am very sad about the deaths of Polytheists as I am about the deaths of Christians.

I want to be as detailed and nuanced as possible in my answers but I am always trying to balance my time and the fact that it's a tumblr post that should be readable to the average user, and not a wikipedia entry or a scientific paper, and I am not giving professional advice here. I am just a random person doing my best to keep a chill and somewhat informed salty content. But I would need a proper scientific paper to answer exactly how I should. So that's why even in this answer which is 10 paragraphs long there are still generalizations 😅

THIS IS A LONG ONE SORRY. I guess I had violence in my heart.

1. The character everyone gets wrong

Ok im aware this is like the most predictable answer for me but its true. CLARA!!! People don't get her at all and it absolutely infuriates me, because she's pretty much the only companion in nuwho who is hated to this extent (ie, people saying mean shit about her on my posts ABOUT HER) Oh does she annoy you by having the exact same traits as the doctor? Do you not like her egotistical and controlling behavior? I wonder why. Perhaps there is a point there.

Sidenote - it annoys me when people will call her a mary sue and simultaneously get mad at her being an asshole and yk, having character flaws, as if those terms aren't mutually exclusive & her hyper-competence that gets read as "mary sue" isn't an intentional choice by the narrative and a result of her being DEEPLY unwell in other aspects of her life.

I feel like a lot of people judge her based on the second half of s7 which, to be fair, is awful and I don't think they knew what they were doing with her yet. But in the context of her whole run she is genuinely one of the most evocative characters to come out of doctor who for me, especially in the way she serves as a kind of commentary and subversion of companions as a whole. I genuinely could talk about clara forever but yeah I do feel like a lot of the hate comes from the fact that people Don't Get Her.

And then among fans who do there's always a risk that they see her as this blank slate twee girl to self-project onto which again, to be fair, is how she was written in season 7. But so many things from supposed fans of her as well that I'll read and be like she would not fucking say that. she does not have the emotional awareness to say that. and/or she is not like a uwu quirky shy girl she would fucking speak her mind about that. She is deranged and I love her. I have to shut up abt clara or this will be the whole post.

10. Worst part of fanon

I honestly cant get TOO annoyed with doctor who fanon because i am a comics fan AND a danny phantom fan and its surprisingly common practice for people in both those fandoms to be a "fan" of something they have not consumed the media for in any form, resulting in this horrible mess of fanon with no connection to what makes the original compelling. + doctor who is such a mess of canon anyway basically everything has been canon at some point even if its shit.

But I think in the end the worst part of DW fanon is, like all fanon, the flattening of really compelling characters to fit trope archetypes. I see this especially with tenrose, where they're just turned into this kind of generic ship that you can plug n play into any situation with little connection to the interesting ways they actually behave in canon.

As a kind of interesting reversal, though, fanon will often expand out dw's most generic characters (ie most chibnal companions. sorry), but only for the purposes of shipping and not in ways I myself find particularly interesting. Like imo Yaz is probably the least developed chibnal companion but pretty much the only one I see expanded on in this way because of the shipping potential.

15. that one thing you see in fanart all the time

im probably gonna get slaughtered for this but i think maybe weve had enough crowley in doctor who outfits or 10 meeting crowley fanart. maybe im bitter because i dont really care about the GO show and I feel like it fills up the dw tag to the brim these days

As for Le Guin, i 1000% recommend The Left Hand of Darkness, it's the only book i gave 5 stars to that i've read this year and i'm not kidding when i say it changed my life. I haven't read her other stuff yet but i've heard that The Word For World Is Forest is also a good one and apparently it's something of an allegory or commentary on the Vietnam War. and i've heard a lot of good things about The Dispossessed that i've also been meaning to read next! I think these three are all set in the same universe too.

My favorite color is green. I play violin, though not very well. I love dogs, and volunteer at an animal shelter. I'm into sci fi and my favorite author is Ursula K. LeGuin. I also like Batman comics.

And I also happen to be a FTM transgender man. What you folks would call a TIF.

Ever since I was 10, before i even knew why, I hated my body. For years of my life, I had daydreams of taking a kitchen knife to my chest and cutting off the breasts. I tried to kill myself twice.

That changed 3 years ago. I realized I was trans and bought myself a binder.

When it's on, I feel relief. I dont think of the kitchen knife. I'm not too depressed to get out of bed.

But after 8 hours, I have to take it off.

I plan on getting top surgery so this relief can stay.

I should note- this isn't about sexism or anything of the sort. Both my parents were outspoken feminists, and I've been fortunate enough to always live in progressive areas.

This is about people. And if transitioning can keep people like me from killing themselves? I'm all for it.

first of all i do not care about your life story. youre like "please please see me as a person, we kweer transes are real people, i hope you can understand that even though youre a horrible evil t*rf. im reaching out to u because i believe theres still good in ur heart uwu" you people r annoyinggg

its not like i lack empathy, i was dysphoric and suicidal for a whole decade of my life and mostly surrounded myself with people who felt the same. what changed for me is realizing that my internal feelings about the gender-flavor of my soul didnt mean a goddamn thing and werent worth dwelling on. im a person and my body is female. at first i still wanted to change myself. i switched to id-ing as transmed, i was ready to acknowledge that i was born a girl at least but i knew so strongly that i wanted to pass as male and that it would make me more comfortable in my body. i was completely sure i was a man.

now ofc body dysmorphia is different for everyone but i really think no matter how fucked up your brain gets about how you naturally look, changing your body with medical intervention isnt the best answer. theres so many side effects and complications with each transition step. taking T in a female body can really fuck you up medically. keep yourself informed about what youre doing and think about if theres less expensive and drastic ways to go about fixing what makes you uncomfortable about the way you're perceived. and not to be insensitive, but if you have a history of s*xual assault, that can also be a very real reason for disconnect from your secondary sexual characteristics and ive met enough people that struggle with that sort of ptsd that manifests as wanting to trans their gender that i would rly think about where the desire to become male comes from. it could be a lot of things, and it can feel so real and valid dont get me wrong—but could fade away with time and/or therapy, leaving you reverse-dysphoric about your changed body

tldr i desisted from being trans myself after a full decade of self-id, various pronouns, etc. so i know where youre coming from. then when i started anxiety medication it helped boost me out of that spiral, which if u havent gotten medicated for other underlying issues i suggest you look into before jumping into hormones/surgery. ive heard that ocd can make u obsess about breasts and want them gone and stuff like that. body dysmorphia in any flavor is a bitch! im wishing you the best anon

also, read some self help literature instead of just fiction. i recommend 7 habits of highly effective people by steven covey. i read this for college and it fr made me a more functional person when i was still FtM and deeply depressed

edit: for the record im not gender conforming to femininity now. i see that misconception a lot, and forget that most ppl dont know what radfem types actually believe. i dress however i want, i just am not delusional about how i want people to address me. im just a lesbian 🫶

the idea of a completely power hungry lamb who disregards narinder as a person is so uncommon, i dont think ive actually seen that dynamic played out in a story/hc tbh ??? so i am LIVING for this, it truly is the spice of life

so spoilers for Depression Quest and Courtship I guess?

also trigger warning: depression, thoughts of self harm, mentions of mental breakdown

So this is me not reading cotl shit in like, literally months in order to try to preserve my headcanonideas like a loser but damn whoaaa I'm happy that you really like this AU

The initial idea actually did have just plain old Lamb being all okay bb i'll be here waiting for you when you ready I won't push you, I'll let you run away and live your life bb just want you to be happy uwu like they did want Narinder to love them back but they were fine with just making him happy and brought back the Bishops and stuff so they could reconcile but as said before, things didn't seem the same for them

Then as Courtship took form I kind of moved those kinds of feelings Lamb had to the new AU and really honestly removed them from the equation because I wanted to focus on Narinder and Getting Over It™ and just living his own fucking life instead

What did remain was Narinder's complete and absolute breakdown when he locks himself into the house they built for him and his eventual escape. Like goddamn, I was like this man needs to break

The amount of broken furniture, crying and screaming onto the floor and bed, throwing items at whoever manages to get into the house, laying down and staring at the ceiling in a catatonic state, etc

I liked the idea of him meeting other people and them remarking on his fallen status or having to hide his identity when interacting or going to public places and it's pretty much how I came up with the Ratoo encounter/friendship

Imagine Kudaai laughing when he requests a scythe and giving him the smallest, lightest one for his weak upper extremities

addendum: like after escaping he does get better like he runs into kudaai and gets scythe at least but he still sucks since his hands/arms more likely to spaz more when he exerts himself too much (aka combat)

Imagine Narinder trying to stay inconspicuous when he goes to Plimbo's stall at the Lighthouse, etc

Once the idea of resurrecting the Bishops came up around the time I started writing Courtship I kind of went, tbh Lamb would only do that to get Narinder back and then that idea of the Lamb just stuck

The Lamb knew where he was the entire time. The Lamb let him think he was finally free from them. The Lamb decided to uproot his life when he thought he finally found peace (by reintroducing his siblings) and from there the Lamb became the kind of famous hero/whatever who would 100% use Narinder as a trophy SO and show them off while he feels awful and drinks every night to cope

i'd really love to know more abt baal and ayms place in the cult too, are they like mini trophies ? or are they just "eh another follower"

So initial idea was that Baal and Aym weren't crazy about it but came around after Lamb invited Forneus for a visit, then they would be like yes Master should see how good Lamb is

Now thinking it over, it could have a good twist to it:

Baal and Aym think that Narinder should come around because Lamb is a good person and his life would improve

In this, his guardians become his jailers. They've become the ones most actively working for his "rehabilitation", and Narinder hates it because he knows it's another way for the Lamb to break him. He's thinking that it's their mortality that made them cave so easily.

Once Narinder makes it out, they want to make their presence known once they find him, but Lamb explicitly commands them not to until they say it's time. So they go and check on him and obvs this is stwess for Narinder since he feels like he's being watched

Still though, Depression Quest is more Narinder-based than Narinder/Lamb relationship-based because it's him trying to live in a new Lamb-ruled world while trying not to show off his shitty power level or something, Lamb didn't really pull up much once he gets out except for really sending Baal and Aym to keep tabs on him and maybe probably when the Bishops are resurrected but even then it's just like... there's still this kind of sad underlying everything.

So fun fact: a few of Courtship's ideas originated in Depression Quest! Such as the shared love for gardening/camellias by Leshy and Narinder, and the relationship/dynamic between Kallamar and Narinder. I don't know why but their relationship felt fucking devastating once I came up with it hence why I think Chapter 9/Kallamar's quest in Courtship has been my favorite to read and write so far.

Courtship and Depression Quest do share quite a few things, so I'm worried I might echo too much of the same shit should I actually come to write it. While writing out this answer I posted an unedited bit on a prototype for Leshy quest and you may see some parallels to the one for Courtship :o
