I think that one missundertanding that oftenly happens when people read "Pride and Prejudice" is that the Bennets are poor/borderline miserable. Because, in thecnical terms, they are not. Their estate is nice, big enough for a prosperous farm, their house is also good and if you consider that their extended family is also well off, you could very well consider them quite rich. The thing is just... The Bingleys and the Darcys (especially the darcys) are TOO RICH that they seem poor in comparison, the Darcys are even aqquanted with someone close to royalty (a lady and a baron if Im not mistaken)

Another thing that make them look poor in comparrison is that since Mr. Bennet does not visit London or leaves their estate oftem (despite having connections there) makes their connections (society speaking) very limited, and back then, good connections and aqquanteces were EVERYTHING. Like, for comparison, if the Bingley's business happend to fail some day (they wouldn’t but still...) their connections to Lady Catherine, the Darcys and many others in London could very well be enough to keep them in every dinner party invitation list at least for two seasons, and by then, Mr. Bingley could very easily manage to ask for some favours or make new deals to recover their fortune.
