wait amanda if you for real wanna talk about aspect ratios pls dump ur thoughts here i’m fascinated and would love to hear more <3

ohmygod . ohmygod!!!!! okay so (idk how much you know so im gonna start from the beginning)

television of the 20th century was filmed in whats called the 4:3 aspect ratio (4 units wide by 3 units tall). basically it was more of a square because people's tvs were fat and square shaped (see above). and! basically the 4 to 3 aspect ratio forced actors together to fit in the frame which is how you get scenes like this (from Sports Night, 1998)

they have to practically sit in each other's laps to be able to fit in the frame!

whereas, around the turn of the millennia mark, when people started having "widescreen" hd tvs, the aspect ratio changed to what movies where filmed in, aka 16:9. and now everything is in 16:9 because everyone has hd/widescreen tvs AND watch tv on their laptops (also 16 to 9)

but 16:9 is sooo spread out you have spacing like this from the americans

now the americans is a bit of a poor example because its a show that uses so much negative space stylistically, but you get the picture. there's just sooo much extra room in the 16:9 ratio, that pushes the actors apart and we dont get that fun closeness of the 4:3

now! seinfeld (and mash, and other famous, digitally remastered shows of the 20th century that are available on streaming) is really where the rubber meets the road. because seinfeld (among others) was FILMED in the 4:3 ratio, but when it was digitally remastered for netflix it was TURNED INTO the 16:9 ratio, so the actors are all tacked together, but when you watch it (on netflix) theres all this unused space around the actors (THAT YOURE NOT SUPPOSED TO SEE! THE DIRECTOR DID NOT INTEND FOR THE AUDIENCE TO SEE THAT!) i cant prove it cus i cant screenshot netflix anymore but you can really see it when the four of the them are in the frame in jerrys apartment and you can also see his desk and his kitchen. basically its just a version of the show we were not meant to see and it BOTHERS ME. most egregious is the episode "the pothole" where in the original 4:3 theyre looking down at it but in the netflix version you cant see it!!!!

what was i talking about? oh yeah okay so basically television used to be filmed in a square and the actors had to sit in each others laps to be able to be in the frame at the same time and now television is all stretched out and theyre like, miles away from each other. i hope this helps<3

Favorite Thing About Them: I love the subtle journey they went from a lonely, frustrated performance artist resenting their audience, constantly melancholic due to being rejected in their romantic pursuits several times, to do their daredevil performances mainly to make themselves happy and becoming proud of their weirdness to the point that they gain an atractive sense of humour and confidence.

Also, they are probably the most versatile actor of the Muppet Theater, alternating between heroic and villanous roles with no difficulty.

Least Favorite Thing About Them: That they doesn't have a proper conversation with his chicken girlfriend, Camilla, to let clear if they want to pursue an open polyamorous relationship or if they want to be comited to her in a monogamous relationship.

Random Headcanon: The background story of Gonzo's arrival on Earth has similarities with the japanese manga and anime shonen hero Kinnikuman, who is a comedic character inspired by Superman and Ultraman: in that manga the hero's father trows accidentally him aways out of the spaceship after mistaking him with a piglet that entered the spaceship during a brief visit to Earth.

In the case of Baby Gonzo, they were accidentally replaced with a baby turkey. Nanny was the one who found and adopted Gonzo, and as they grew up, Gonzo was the last Muppet to leave Nanny's house to take care of her as she got old, getting a job to survive as a plumber with an neighboring indian imigrant who introduced Gonzo to Indian Cinema. That was how Gonzo got the dream to become a performer in Bombay.

Unpopular Opinion: I think Gonzo's status as a Whatever wouldn't be erased if their status as an alien had remained legitimate after the idea was presented in the Muppet Babies cartoon series and the movie Muppets from Space. Because while the other aliens have similar physical appearances and share with some interests with Gonzo (like cannons), they didn't have the formative experiences that Gonzo had living on Earth among Muppets and Humans: loving Earth's food, Earth's literature, Earth's clothes, Earth's music genres, Earth's performance art. The Muppet Babies picture story book What Is a Gonzo? presented this point pretty well, when Baby Gonzo crossed a mirror to find a world where all the people had the same face as them, yet who, just like their friends in our world, asked themselves what Gonzo was. At the end of the story, they go to an inventor, Professor Garbonzo, who created a machine called the Onzometer that answers all questions, and when Gonzo asks what they are, the machine answers: "You are Gonzo. Isn't that enough?".

Gonzo can brush their teeth and sing the Itsy Bitsy Spider song at the same time, they like tuna fish sandwiches with ketchup, they can blow a bubble shaped like a peperoni pizza. All those characteristics make them unique, both among aliens and earthlings, so their proud status as a queirky, weird whatever is not treatened with the idea that the character may have outer space alien origins.

SKINAMARINK AAA SCARY MOVIE AAA SO SCARY

i DEFINITELY benefited from leaving captions on, the dialogue is very hard to understand and while it the stuff that isn't captioned isn't essential so much to understand what's happening, it'd definitely be confusing in a frustrating way to not have the clarity for that.

but ouughgh i loved the commitment to Not Showing You the whole room, always a small part at a weird angle, let you really commit to the visual effect of the vhs noise, where you always gotta work with minimal visual information and use whatever context and imagination you have to make it work. and it keeps you feeling small and powerless, always missing some information. works very well with the helplessness of the children. there was One shot that actually showed you the entirety of the living room and it felt so unnerving to see.

its definitely an Atmospheric Sinking Dread movie that really works you AFTER jump scares. like i get a cheap one and im like AW YOU CHEATER YOU MADE ME JUMP but then in the Tense scenes right after that i was on edge the whole time bc i knew another scare Could happen and it made the slowly panning back and forth, the staring into complete darkness with nothing but visual noise. aaaa really lovely, freaked me out

my only criticisms are: subtitles need to be on the whole thing, they needed to get a Second piece of foley for Bare Child Feet On Carpet bc what they were using was definitely Slippers On Hardwood, and--this isn't really a criticism, just a funny--despite being an analogue-style vhs horror, it's widescreen. but I really liked it!

Very specific question to ask, but what media player/s do you use to watch Tokusatsu? I've been using MX Player and VLC (fiddling with the aspect ratio on the latter for some shows) and I can't really seem to get rid of these distracting black bars on the sides without making the footage all stretched out. Any guides too would be appreciated, if you're able to supply any!

i use VLC too but i've never really had this issue? i don't fiddle with the settings too much, im just on the default aspect ratio and donbrothers looks like this for me

i will say for older shows that have a more boxlike aspect ratio, like abaranger, i don't think you can get around those borders without stretching out the video bc it was made for a certain screen size. but im not sure why something shot for widescreen like donbrothers looks like that for you, unfortunately. does anyone else know a fix for this?

It is my eternal goal to be the best Fantasy Zone 2 16c player or at least be comparable to a good player by achieving a 4+ loop (or at least beating the game on max diff.)

A bit of an explanation of what makes this special and a bit of my planing behind how I play the game

To start my main release of the game is the 3DS due its implementation of analog control and widescreen

I have done some runs on the arcade version before and its def doable but I simply prefer the wider view and analog (it actually brings and incredibly useful technique).

Ive made it to a third loop a few times on arcade but sadly kept dying on it (two clears is not half bad).

Loop = 1 Clear

The game lets you clear the game as many times as you can as it resets after beating evil Opa-Opa

The game takes all your lives and it converts them into score and the game increases the difficulty by 1 (max of 5, usually I start out at 3), the increase in difficulty brings faster bullets and more enemy spawns (which means more bullets)

Its also worth keeping in mind that the price inflation between runs stays, if you bought the laser beam twice it will increase in price slight. the game will keep the increased price for the second run.

so those are the main things to keep in mind. now onto my usual loadouts for each stage

Base Build = Jet Engine/Turbo Engine, Twin Shot, Double Big Bombs

When possible/necesary: Laser, 3 Way, Wide, Twin Big Shot

to tank one hit and have a higher damage output... mostly the former. they are all relatively cheap options too.

Loadout/Changes to loadout per stage:

Stage 1 = Jet Engine + Double Bombs (not enought gold for engine, big bombs not selectable on stage 1)

Stage 2 = Heavy Bomb

Stage 3 = Fire Bomb/Heavy Bomb (I usually replace heavy bomb with fire bomb in advance to prepare for stage 4)

Stage 4, 5 and 6= Same set up as stage 3 (stage 5 prefferable with 7 way shot... theres no real advantage from using it lol, I just like using it when I can. You can save your cash on that)

Stage 7 = Laser + Fire Bomb

If you can tell, fire bomb is the best bomb in the entire game.

it does HUGE damage, can be used as many times as you want, its useful for nearly all bosses.

Even on the boss rush the quick kill on the round 2 boss can be neglected in order to just stay with fire bombs

The boss rush is kinda just keeping fire bomb and sometimes equiping laser.

Super important note if you are shooting for constant bright endings... dont buy drop tears when the boss rush starts. Kill yourself with a nenon on the prelude to the final boss and THEN buy it... do buy a laser shot there too, it helps with the nenons and if you are fast enought it can do big damage to evil opa.

So yeah thats the usual idea. I do tend to buy guns for the sake of it at times... I never need fire shot but its always fun to use hehe.

Regarding the price increasing per purchase

There are some things that are always affordadble (which is why loops in this game are even possible- I genuinelly refuse to believe someone can casualy beat the game with small wings)

Stuff like the jet engine always staying at a comfy 1000g is a huge help.

Wide Beam is always an affordable choise. Due to me never buying triple bombs (unless I die on a late stage), I often find them a great tool for second-third loops.

Oh yeah real quick, regarding that technique I mentioned that was introduced on the 3DS ver. you can move backwards while shooting foward. If you move your circle pad slightly back you can just move backwards without changing directions, this makes the stage 1 and 3 bosses a complete breeze with bomb and shot spam.

I could go on and on in more detail about certain things about the game but at a certain point you just have to figure things out yourself... and im a bit tired of typing, its kinda late.
