What counts as queer rep? If you're only talking about subtext then you have to ask if it's really rep or if you have a colored view of the character in question. The thing about MGS is that it's not afraid to label it's queer characters as such, like vamp, Dr Strangelove, Volgin. Confirmed in canon is what I consider representation otherwise the plot gets misunderstood or motivations are misunderstood. Everything else is just interpretation, which is loose and subjective so not true rep since the subtext may be unintentional. A character isn't queer just because fans think so or want it, it has to be confirmed before it's Valid representation.

I get how you feel but the point I’m trying to get at is that too many people are concerned with what counts as Good and Valid Representation and scrutinizing every character who might be queer under a microscope so they can determine whether or not the character said enough gay things and give the work Validity Points. I agree that there is a difference between intentional and unintentional subtext but at the end of the day there’s no true way to tell aside from word of god, and subtext is subtext and not text for a reason, so the viewer can come to their own conclusions without having everything spelled out for them, and I think it can be degrading to storytelling to suggest that subtext is an invalid form of representation. I agree that it is important to have more textually canon queer people in media, but to me the idea that every queer character has to be confirmed as gay on screen and behave in an acceptable way to be considered Valid is harmful to storytelling—subtext is an important tool for all writers. I like MGS because there are queer characters on all levels of text ranging from “up to the viewer” to “confirmed by word of god” to “explicitly canon” but the levels of “canon” are pretty hotly debated when it comes to characters like bb, kaz and ocelot, so my point of view is to be less concerned with how much evidence there is and try to recognize for myself why the storytelling decisions were made, why some characters get to say they’re bisexual or lesbian but some don’t. And a lot of all of this has to do with the context of the media and the time period and all, like a lot of people try to pick apart every character under a modern lens of what’s acceptable by our current standards. like ocelot doesn’t say “im gay” or kiss big boss because aside from that not being fitting for his character or appropriate for their story, it likely would not be allowed to be made (kojima had to fight his own team to include shots of venom and kaz standing close together), but some people would only be concerned with the fact that he’s not “textually” canonically gay. anyway this is a very long winded way of saying that the “validity” of someone’s textual queerness can be very much up to interpretation, but there are many reasons why a character might be subtextually queer and trying to qualify characters as either Canon and Good or Not Canon and Queerbait is a waste of time that could be spent enjoying a character, and that character sexuality debates should be handled on a case by case basis instead of trying to make a quantifiable scale of how canon something is

#im not the authority on any of this and I know tumblr has a very different dynamic when talking about queer media as opposed to like.#a discussion irl about mainstream tv #im really really bad at being concise but I guess the point is.#representation comes in all shapes and sizes and we should be less concerned with what qualifies as Good #and spend more time just like. appreciating and connecting to the characters #cause a character being canonically gay doesn’t automatically make them better representation than someone who is subtextually gay #but I get that when it comes to cishet people and how gay people are presented to them the standards are different

Gerodi la forge is a complicated representation for the blind/chronic pain community though probably more positive than most but still falling under the technology ruining the nuance of disability.

So I wanted to draw him and show a more accurate(imo) portrayal of his eyes without the visor to 1 cuz white clear eyes trope annoys me

2 to not want to hide blind person eyes as media often tends to do (minus sunglasses needed for blind actor due to sensitivities)

3 cuz they cause pain and so he should have them off more often.

So gerodi la forge for me as a avid star trek fan was important, hey I can exist if he can he not been erased! Buuuuuuuut,

it did urk me that 1 he was kinda a lil nerdy creep trope that never got a gf which levar burton himself has called out as racism from the shows writers (sources at bottom of thread) id also argue ableism also and many able bodied people treat disabled people as sexless.

but also that he never got to be disabled really, he suffered from chronic pain form the vizor but kept choosing to not take pain pills or treatment, which you know that’s some inner ableism right there I did to myself as a teen, and I kinda think gerodi reinforced it a lil in me,

“look where he is, he deals with the pain he never shows it”

Not a great message really, gerodi never is allowed to show the struggle they choose that the vizor existing was enough, and yes we got that amasing ep where he didn’t want to be fixed, but that would then be countered by never showing the struggle. Women at warp did a great ep where on disability karrisa mehr calling gerodi a disabled version of a “manic pixie dream girl” feels very apt.

Never allowed to complain just be quirky gerodi.

And on to the vizor

The vizor is complicated , it apparently let him see much of the EM spectrum", ranging from simple heat and infrared through radio waves” now I personally am all for mobility aids that have cool attachments but it’s a delicate balance of unique features and fixing and or making them more powerful than able bodied colleague-cuz thats fixing, and I feel gerodi with how show wrote it and portrayed him it was a magic fix more than an aid, why I chose to only show the thermal spectrum in image, instead of how it apparently can see everything more than human eyes can anyway which yeh defeat aid purpose.

and it gave him chronic pain, they choose this as a balancer, okay…but then never portrayed it just did to show how gerodi overcame his disabilities and gets on with it like a good soldier. So yeh im mixed on it. They made great use in ep when it was hacked by cardassians this is the cool thing you can do with mobility aids (unless you just destroy them, fuck you then) and that was interesting for the time, but um then in he insolence of office the ebook gerodi forced to have his vizor REMOVED so he can stay in star fleet as its now a security risk- NOT OKAy you could have just had a redesign or a arc of gerodi having to fight for it if you must but no , brain surgery remove this part of you!!

so yeh my ending take is gerodi is complicated overall that’s still a positive over most disabled rep in sci-fi but many mistakes were made and some part of gerodi was harmful and picard sure as hell didn’t address that. They show his eyes now but its still the white cloudy trope and knowing its for awful reasons kidna ruins that. So I hope my art here just shows his potential and blind eyes diversity, but opens up discussions in not fixing and overcoming can be toxic and that

pain is part of a disability its part of the rep and it sucks

this is very important to remember when depicting disability that there’s nuance guys.

ok re: my last reblog about tumblr shows™ im not done complaining. i think a big problem with the way the tumblr populace interacts with television is that people on here don't watch media that's not produced to high heaven. good omens and our flag means death are very high budget projects that have a lot of big names attached, both in front of and behind the camera - which is fine; of course people are going to watch big budget shows, that's kind of the whole point of producing them - but they get treated like these underground hits produced by, for, and about marginalized groups and like...they're not. they're on prime video and hbo max, which aren't exactly obscure and certainly aren't known for their delicate and authentic handling of queer issues.

but these shows (and the ones that came before them, bbc sherlock comes to mind) get consumed by people on here looking for authentic representation, and through the game of cultural telephone that often gets played in online communities, become stripped for parts and re-molded into bodies of rhetoric that get interpreted as foundational texts for the queer politics of gen z. i'm not saying it's bad to want representation or identify with the representation you find in high-budget projects, i'm just saying that these shows aren't designed to cater to the tastes and wants of queer gen z-ers, they're designed to turn a profit by generating as much viewership as possible, and if that includes queer gen z-ers, then so be it.

the audience of a show is, in a studio's mind, really only a means to profit. i think that's also why a lot of these shows get torn to shreds for not handling representational issues quote-unquote "correctly" - the producers behind shows like stranger things, for instance, are only worried about how people might interpret a shipping dynamic insofar as it drives viewership. they've danced around will's sexuality as a plot point for four seasons because they know the "will-he-won't-he" dynamic is something that draws people to the show and keeps them coming back when new seasons drop. they're not concerned with how authentic or inauthentic their portrayals of the queer experience might be, no matter how that makes people who are looking for authenticity feel. producers want to make these shows appealing to as many potential viewers as possible, and that often unfortunately means toning down tangible queer subtext and making it more nebulous, so they can have plausible deniability if culture shifts to the point where on-screen queer representation isn't en vogue.

to that end, i think a lot of people who enjoy shows like gomens, ofmd, or stranger things but who become frustrated with how these shows handle queeer issues might benefit from watching lower-budget projects that prioritize story and earnestness over profit potential. even older films like fried green tomatoes or the birdcage do a better job, at least in my opinion, of portraying authentic queer experiences than lots of modern big-studio projects. even though the lesbian dynamics in fried green tomatoes aren't ever outright delineated as a queer story, it's clear that the element of queer subtext was important to the writers, which makes it resonate as that much more authentic.

anyway, what i'm trying to say is that there are queer writers out there who want to share their stories with you, but are pushed out in favor of larger-scale projects that are surer financial bets. but these stories are out there - it's just up to you to put in the effort to find them. putting in that effort can be incredibly rewarding, and it's really heartwarming to be able to know you're connecting with other people like you through honest portrayals of the lives you lead. and, inconvenient as it is, you're not going to get that from amazon.

OKAY!!!! i actually have. like a. insanely long list for my mother headcanons and have an uncomplete Google docs document on them because im insane but i will make it as short as i can by only taking about mother 2 LMAOOO so imma just add a silly read more thingy here because i am about to info dump so hard

Imma go character by character because ITS JUST CLEANER...

first off silly baseball child ness

Because I'm silly like that I woke up one day and decided he was trans masc. if ness or just any male protagonist in media (looking at you link) could make money out of the amount of people that made headcanons of him not being cis I imagine there'd be alot of cash coming in

I like to think of him as half-latino and knowing spanish because WHY NOT!!! and since every single latinoamerican breathes and cherishes goku HE NEEDS TO BE A DRAGON BALL FAN he would not be accurate latinoamerican representation IF HE WASNT A DRAGON BALL FAN!!!

Out of the whole group I imagine he tries to use PSI as little as possible in his daily life once the whole journey is over, for he is more comfortable living as a normal kid. WILL NOT HESITATE TO USE HEALING POWERS IF NECCESARY but otherwise avoids it (except telepathy on animals because i have this funny thought where he has unintentionally used telepathy his entire life and thats how he knows what animals are saying BUT THOUGHT THIS WAS NORMAL??? once he figures out its not a normal thing he avoids doing it as much with people but he cannot live without knowing what the dawg be saying...

the airhead in the group. he is mostly gut oriented instead of going by brains his brain mgiht as well be a burger

ALSO THE LOUD ONE a very empathetic and easy going boy that gets easily excited about everything and just likes having fun. which means every time he gets a semblance of a negative emotion he will proceed to numb it down and ignore it causing him to just accumulate it😰 LIKE HOW HE HAS TO BEAT DIFFERENT CREATURES AND ENEMIES in his magicant they appear and look down at him for hurting them WHICH MIGHT BE HIM FEELING GUILTY BY THE FACT HE HAS TO DO THAT AND I IMAGINE HE CAN ONLY PULL HIMSELF TO DO SO BY NUMBING THE GUILT DOWN... he's just like look lets lets just get this done😞 what goes on with Pokey ending up on Giygas's side also applies to this but i will not go on detail. because I am writing fanfiction about it and rather not spoiil it😊😊😊😊

the baseball fan ever that practices daily without missing a single day and basically drags Pokey alongside him

anyway PAULA TIME!!!! i am insane so i have provided some backstory for her

I imagine that she awakened her PSI pretty early on and is very gifted around it, and since it is so rare she became very popular in the media at a young age and is essentially a celebrity child. She thought it was very fun initially but she feels pressured to keep a perfect image of herself for she is considered to be a role model which painted an image of someone that wasn't her. She feels very upset about this nowadays and has tightly held onto what is important to her and her true self as to not lose it in attempting to be someone else. She basically has some anger issues out of this because she has gotten used to people not really respecting her boundaries and not being very interested in who she actually is

SHE'S STILL REALLY CARING SHE GENUINELY ENJOYS HELPING OTHERS AND IS THE ONE KEEPING THE TEAM MORALE IN BETWEEN THE FOUR even when she tends to forget taking care of herself sometimes

so yeah she isnt really amused when she's kidnapped SHE JUST GENERALLY HAS LIGHT REACTIONS TO THINGS GOING SOUTH BECAUSE SHE BASICALLY KINDA EXPECTS THAT? despite how much optimism she spreads around she's quite the pessimist (though never voices those thoughts) so she feels very drawn in when Ness is actually genuinely optimistic about everything

loves cute things so much she needs every single big plushie she finds IMMEDIATELY. kirby merch hoarder

generally a sweetheart but very bold and feisty not as much as Kumatora is but she is

if she was in the modern era she'd be a gamer and live breathe minecraft she would be the type of person that gently explains things to her friends on one side but yells when a random stranger in her team is playing horribly

really excited over her frying pan she would have gotten a bat if she didn't think itd be cool if she could use her frying pan as both a weapon and something to warm food up in. like SHE WILL USE IT IN ANY CHANCE POSSIBLE TO FEEL COOL like "Yeah ... give me that cold slice of pizza imma put in the pan . ..." pk fire some random oil she keeps around for thiw specific purpose and there it is it makes her so happy

AS I PREVIOUSLY MENTIONRD SHES VERY STRAIGHTFOWARD ABOUT HER FEELINGS FOR NESS EVERYONE KNOWS IT SHE IS NOT TRYING TO HIDE IT AT ALL but does not directly confess because she likes teasing Ness. she finds it amusing when he gets flustered about it and pretends he isn't catching on

not the usual type of shy who hides from people and stutters a lot I IMAGINE HE JUST GETS REALLY AWKWARD AND SPEAKS AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE AND ENDS UP SOUNDING REALLY FORMAL BY ACCIDENT. He will respond to you just in very few words if some stranger suddenly starts talking to him he basically freezes up and fights internally to even say a word because he does not know how to do conversations

He's very knowledgeable in many different things and if you ask him about anything he'll answer VERY NONCHALANTLY AND SHORTLY AS IF HE DOES NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND THE SUBJECT WHEN HE IN FACT, DOES. HE SIMPLY IS NOT INTERESTED. but then you bring up inventions and guns and he will provide you a full rambling session with visual examples test runs different things to reference to for different concepts he's mentioning and every single minute detail. THERE HE ACTUALLY GETS EXCITED LIKE HE ISN'T SHY AT ALL THERE

cannot for his life comprehend social cues or idioms he takes things very literally and doesn't assume there's any hidden meaning HE'S BETTER AT THINGS THAT ARE LOGICALLY ANSWERED THAN ANYTHING SOCIAL. so yes Tony can accidentally drop a hint that he's crushing on him and DESPITE JEFF FEELING THE SAME WAY, he'll be like hm thanks tony cool I'm sure that is a very best friend thing to say i do not think there are any romantic implications here....

has an inferiority complex over the fact people credit his skills to be coming from his father (who he basically HARDLY KNOWS OR REMEMBERS SEEING PHYSICALLY BEFORE THE PROPHECY) and not to his own efforts!!! he's constantly compared to him and is expected to have the same amount of genius he does so Jeff tends to overwork himself at times to reach this standard.

has tested million types of coffee to see which one keeps him awake at night the best— but hates coffee! he prefers tea. friends assume he likes coffee because of how mcuh he drinks it he does not

oh yeah as i implied has a big fixation towards inventions and guns. he just thinks they're inteesting as hell he wasn't one to use them he just thought they were rad as hell and he WILL recognize specific ones if shown even a peak of one. he cannot live without being 100% up to date with every single type of gun in existence he needs to know all about them and understand how they work and does elaborate dissections into how they're built

even if shy once comfortable with the rest of the team he actually is one to occasionally tease them and joke around sometimes HE HAS THIS RELATIONSHIP WITH NESS WHERE THEY ARE CONSTANTLY TRYING TO ANNOY EACH OTHER without actually annoying in each other idk how you call it but they just playing around they silly like that

type of person who's face turns red at even the slightest embarassment it just happrns really easily

im not even gonna lie to you he's essentially me irl i needed a character to project myself into so i dont feel bad about not being good at social cues and at anything that is not my main interest

OH YEAH HE'S THE TALLEST HE'S VERY LANKY BUT HE'S THE TALLEST he's confused to be older than he actually is a lot of the time

Initially took things very seriously and remained stone faced for a while but ironically became the one that made the most jokes out of everything and has a very contagious laugh— he still takes things more seriously than the rest and is the one that keeps everyone focused when it's important but is now able to relax a lot more

REALLY CHARISMATIC. LIKE HE'S AMAZING AT DEALING WITH PEOPLE EVEN IF HE PREFERS SOLITUDE.

loves animals and animals love him once found a dog and was very sad when he couldn't take him along in the journey... HE GENUINELY JUST SITS DOWN AND SPEAKS TO ANIMALS VERY CASUALLY LIKE hello sweet little dog. how are you doing on this fine saturday. awesome😊.. AND DOES MAGIC TRICKS FOR THEM😭😭😭 He's the disney princess of the group animals will just come to him and be nice to him birds sing along to this boy existing AND HE'LL BE LIKE OH, THIS IS NORMAL, while the rest of the group is just dumbfounded by rhat

i think he'd be quite tech illiterate as he spends most of his time concentrating on his training he really didn't pay much mind to technology (he preferred putting time into working on himself instead of wasting it trying to properly understand technology). BUT HE'S DOING HIS BEST HE IS INTRODUCED TO ARCADE GAMES AND THANKS TO FRIENDS BECOMES HOOKED he was a little lost but hes okay

becomes good friends with jeff because both felt like the odd one in the team at some point and come from very different backgrounds than ness and paula did THEYRE GOOD BUDDIES

He speaks multiple languages very well, but since english is not his first language he feels a bit lost sometimes when with friends. So doing his best effort he brings A WHOLE DICTIONARY WITH HIM AT ALL TIMES like these four will find a word not a single one of them knows and Poo will be there like. dont worry guys i got this AND PULLS OUT HIS DICTIONARY😭😭😭😭 DUDE'S READING THE ENTIRE THING TO PROPERLY UNDERSTAND HIS FRIENDS😭😭 picks magazines for english so he doesn't have to ask them every single time he's lost and to keep at the same pace they do

might be noticeable already but POO'S A TOTAL SWEETHEART HE DOES NOT MIND SAYING THE MOST SWEETEST AND CARING WORDS EVER KNOWN TO MAN and is very confused when one of the 4 cries in emotion because his words are very nice. Sometimes the only sane one in the group he is silly, but he balances the silly properly he knows when to save the silly for later

talking about him being good with people if you need to distract someone NO PROBLEM and he just does it really well DOES MAGIC TRICKS!!!! he likes doing his silly little tricks it's something he learned on the side from his training he loves seeing how people react to them

okay so im gonna start with some trigger warnings ( please tell me if I missed anything), they are not necessarily in this "review" but good to know about.

Aled Last is my favorite bean and I would literally die for him. obviously I knew him from heartstopper already, but this is like HIS book and I love him so much. I would just like to give him a hug and therapy bc he needs it

Carol last is the devil in human form, I hate her so fucking much. Put me in a room with her, that bitch is dead

Frances is really sweet and I do love her very much. I believe that we have *similar* experiences with school etc. with is why she is so relatable for me. ofc im not as driven as she is but I do feel like there's a lot expected of me, school vise. I do have good grades and so, and I really fell a lot of pressure, mostly from myself around it. anyway, what I feel like I can relate mostly to is the whole "school friends" situation. okay I just started ranting here literally no one cares but yeah anyway

i'm not gonna go in on the other characters as much but yeah a little bit 'bout each of them can't hurt

Carys - a queen, respectful, love it

Daniel: I love him so much I can't even

Raine: slay. just slay.

Lana: Best mom award goes to-, Carol and charlies mom wishes that they could be as slaying as ms gurl here but nu uh, perfect, an angel

I can't remember any more significant/important characters rn so yeah.

One of the things I really thought about, reading this book, is how well written and easy to read it is. I believe that I really noticed it because of the fact that I read "call me by your name" - a pretty complex book, that I found really hard to read, right before I started radio silence. the contrast just really made me appreciate her writing 110% more. everything just flows, and that is a thing that I rarely reflect over, because it so rarely occurs in the books I read.

If you are looking for platonic relationships, this is the book for you. Aled and Frances's relationship is the DEFINITION of platonic soulmates and you cannot tell me otherwise. I love that this tory isn't centered around romance. oftentimes books will start with a plot, good characters, and then after like 100 pages the story is about a white cishet relationship, and all the characters loses their personality. I personally love that Frances doesn't "end up" with anyone. There is romance in the book, but it is barely even a subplot tbh and I adore that so much.

the REPRESENTATION - ofc this is an Alice Oseman book, so im not really "surprised", it just still makes me so happy to see such good representation in media. its just so rare to read a book about a biracial bisexual girl, a gay demi bestie, his asian gay bf and a whole cast full of queer, diverse people.I have in fact not, in a long time if at all.

there are of course thousands of more things to be said about this masterpiece, but I unfortunately do not have time to do so at the moment so this will have to do :)

I have seen Do Revenge and I am obsessed with it! I also have Opinions so thank you very much for giving me an opportunity to share them.

My opinion on Drea and Eleanor is the same as my opinion on R0nance. I see their relationship as platonic.

I like representation of wlw in platonic relationships, and I especially like when that representation includes platonic affection! Which we get with Drea and Eleanor.

I didn't feel that their relationship was queercoded in a way that constitutes queerbaiting, as I have seen some people say. I think it's important to remember that queercoding is different with wlw and mlm characters and relationships because for women it is normalized to show platonic affection, talk about your feelings with your friends, etc. (Unless you're already out as a queer woman, that is, cuz then it's automatically considered romantic. Which brings me back to the importance of rep of wlw in platonic relationships in media!)

I also liked both Drea and Eleanor's love interests. While I wish Gabbi and Eleanor's relationship was more well developed, it was cute. I think Drea and whatever his name is had a really well developed relationship. But the romantic relationships weren't meant to be the focus of this movie, which is the thing I love about the movie.

I love love love Drea and Eleanor's relationship, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Give me more friendship centric queer movies!!!! Gib them now!!!!

(But also anon, it was not just you who thinks they should have gotten together. The majority of people feel that way, and I definitely understand why!)

Okay so my family and I all watch Camp Cretaceous together and my younger brother especially loves it because he loves all of the Jurrassic Park movies. He's eleven and my parents gatekeep a lot of things from him for Christian reasons. That includes anything that has to do with LGBTQ people. If you watch Camp Cretaceous I suppose this is spoilers so don't read further.

Anyway, they made canon Sammy and Yaz's relationship, a big win. But not to my parents. We've already watched four seasons and we want to see how it ends. However, I'm afraid that once my mom finds out it has a wlw couple in it she'll call it quits (she always checks this Christian blog before every movie or show we watch to see what curse words, sex scenes, or LGBTQ subjects are in it). My younger brother won't understand this at all because they refuse to tell him anything about the LGBTQ community. When Light-year came out my brother really wanted to see it but after mom found out it had a wlw couple in it she said we couldn't and wouldn't explain to him why. He was really upset about it. I don't want my parents to do this to him (especially since it's a show he's really really invested in) because at this point he's old enough to learn and they should be able to accept that LGBTQ people are apart of this world and there's no getting away from it. You can't hide your son away from it because he's gonna find out at some point. In this day and age you can't just pretend it's not there because it is. In public you are going to see wlw and mlm couples holding hands and kissing. You are going to see trans people going about their day. You are going to see masculine people in dresses and feminine clothing. You are going to meet people who will ask you to use they/them pronouns. They need to face that.

Maybe my mom is scared because I questioned my sexuality for a short time (as far as she knows, Im straight, but honestly I'm bi-curious). I think she believes that I questioned it because of Instagram, shows, and other media, or because of my friends (all of which you have settled in some part of the LGBTQ community or have questioned at some time). She's afraid that my brother will do the same and question whether he likes men. But honestly you're just prolonging the inevitable. I feel like in this day and age everyone's going to have a point where they're going to question who they like. If it's not today, it'll be another day. So why not let him watch a damn show with a wlw couple in it? Its not as if the show is going to be flaunting it anyway, as much as I wish they did because I know representation is important. I'm really just ranting because I've been thinking about this ever since I've caught on to the hints at Sammy and Yaz's relationship and I'm really tired of my Christian parents trying to gatekeep stuff they think is sinful but really is just everyday life.

hella I just wanted to say thank you for kanut. I’m ace and we are really underrepresented in the media, so having someone who is like you is so important and it means the world to me. "I have read about love a thousand times over in a thousand different stories, and it never looks like me.” this line genuinely knocked the wind out of me I almost started crying because you put it into words! I love reading, and it’s always epic love stories and they are never like me. but also this: “this soft, gentle given that so many strived for, this beautiful thing a thousand different playwrights spoke of, and it was never written for zuko, because zuko’s love was wrong, was smaller, was lesser.” I cannot emphasise how much kanut meant to me because without him I probably would thought I was broken. I used to pretend I had crushes on people because I wanted to be their friend, and friendship felt so insignificant compared to romance. anyway this was a long way of saying thank you so much hella xx

thank you so much for this lovely ask! im so glad you were able to see yourself in a positive light. im not trying to talk over the aroace angle bc that is ultimately what it always comes back to when kanut talks about this stuff and i dont want to ever undermine that, but i know i wrote very much from a place of queer love in general, hence why zuko as a gay kid was able to relate to what kanut was saying as an aroace man. ive felt it for a while now when i really get into certain media and i immediately start going mental with all my queer hcs, and yet so very rarely do any of those hcs turn out to be canon, to represent a love i recognise, and it really does start to feel personal after a while. like no matter how much i love a show, it's never going to love me back. does that make sense? it's why representation is so so so important and im so honestly fucking honoured that so many of you have found that in kanut. im only sorry that it had to be some guy in a fanfiction instead of someone on a big screen like you deserve

the abusive flower husbands thing does actually just come across as homophobic at some point. interpreting things in your own way is all well and good but as a gay man seeing people who are not gay men (from a lot of what I've seen anyway, not saying it's true for everyone), bending over backwards to say "no really they're abusive because I'm going to take these jokes and bits completely literally" it feels bad actually. I'm also not cool with the way people also tie this into scott being aro, bc I'm also aro and implying that he's abusive because he is aro is bad actually! sorry i really don't want to start anything this has just really been bothering me and you're the first to actually bring it up. it just has uncomfortable ties to the way people treat scott (as a character and as a real life person) as a gay man, and i think people should be more critical of these patterns

i had no idea scott was aro? huh! so i wont be able to comment on that fully because i havent seen it personally used as a point of discussion but that's really interesting..and im sure ur telling the truth i just. i havent seen it so i cant say much about my experience with it

other than that, yeah! like i said in my rb response, people dont tend to give the way that joel and grian and etc all bully jimmy the same treatment, where theyre Also horrible and abusive to jimmy etc, it just. it strikes me?

i know not EVERYONE who is interpreting FH as abusive hates scott or is even homophobic but it does just come off weird when people just don't seem to like... enjoy. the people involved at all. ... i enjoy some problematic ships because im interested in the dynamic and how things happened and the outcome, um. .. not because i hate this other guy??

idk if that makes any sense. id love to talk about the nuance and importance of media analysis and interpretation/representation of problematic relationships whether they be intentional or not but thats not rly what ur here for.

personally i do love discussion so if you have more shipping takes i am literally all ears, even if i disagree i really enjoy trying to understand different perspectives, which is a huge reason why i even made that post in the first place. it was a cry of frustration and confusion with what i was seeing because i had no context.

anyways everyone please remember we love eachother and to be civil and that im just here for discussion and understanding. i dont think FH is abusive personally, to me it reads as very just messing around and rough housing in a bad and unfamiliar situation (the life series is not like. a kind game, and 3l was the first! ofc theyre gonna be less comfortable).

hey guys angry white boy here to talk about racism, what could go wrong? I saw a post the other day that I won’t tag or anything cause I think it’s for a safe space for black people and that’s not my place? Anyway the post was essentially pointing out that people defend Billy from stranger things and glorify him even though he was very very racist. It got me thinking about how obvious racism needs to be for people to be like “oh that was racist”. Cause so many people are denying Billy was racist, he singled out the black kid and hated him, I think he called him “like that” or “that kind” at one point whICH like how can’t you tell??? But we live in times where people can say that stuff irl and worse and everyone goes “oh it was just a joke”, “oh it wasnt about race”. and that sucks. So I became hyper aware of racist shit I’ve been doing (yeah apparently you can still do that stuff once people have forgotten about black lives matter, shocking I know) and I’m gonna address them. - Avoiding watching media starring black people. I swear I never did this intentionally but when I look at the shows I’ve watched it’s like modern family, the middle, parks and rec, the office, boy meets world and brooklyn 99. While all these shows have some representation, some better than others, you can very easily make the argument that the main character and thus the person the audience is set up to empathise with most is white. And whilst characters like Captain Holt are main characters, I’d say Jake Peralta would be the main character of the show. I grew up watching fresh prince, thats so raven, true jackson vp so it’s not like I had a primarily anti-black childhood either. I genuinely think this is just because I subconsciously think I’d relate more to “white shows” which is stupid and anti black. I say anti black and not racist here cause I’ve recently been watching shows starring latin casts and as I’m typing this I’m realising I don’t know about a lot of asian shows that aren’t anime. What brought this to light is the new show Killing It which looks great, has one of the best actors around in it imo but I genuinely hesitated before watching it and I’m relatively sure it’s cause the main character is black. And that isn’t right but if I don’t admit it then it will continue. -Being hyperaware of my friends that are poc. This one I hate that I do, I’m really trying to see people as people while appreciating their cultures and where they came from but I’m so desperate to ensure that that isn’t always the focal point of our conversations that it does more damage than good. I think this will get better once I hang out with some of my poc friends (genuinely a mix of all different races here hence why im not naming the races but i get that it can sound like i mean the 2 black people i work with or something stupid like that) more and get more comfortable, right now non-white people seem new to me and I think that’s where this is an issue.

Those are things I currently do that I’ve realised are a problem and I’m fixing them. Things I used to do included: assuming people were white unless proven otherwise, spoke over poc especially black people, avoided reading about racial issues, got butthurt over really dumb stuff, assumed poc weren’t neurodiverse or queer (representation matters so much). Oh also just as an ending thing, a lot of this Ukraine support is rooted in racism - let me explain. Supporting Ukraine is important, supporting anybody suffering is important, that’s what being a human is about. However some of you acting like this is the first war and suddenly wanting to support refugees better start applying that same energy to Palestine and Syria and Iraq (yeah damage remains after a war, just cause they aint at war anymore doesnt mean theyre suddenly back to normal). “But if you look at who our enemies usually are...” 1) Racist af. 2) The enemy in the Ukraine situation is Russia and idk bout you but to me they look pretty similar.

There are so many videos on the internet of different animals coming together to take care of the young of a different animal. Because in nature, we’re programmed to look after children. If there’s a kid in need of money, I’ll give them some. If there’s a kid needing to know good adults exist and rescued, I’ll help them. I’d do absolutely anything to help a kid idk, most people are supposed to be that way like tigers and lions and wolves and dogs and any animal you can think of. But some of you won’t help a kid in a warzone because the media you like and the daily mail taught you to be scared of different melanin levels. This was a really long rant but sometimes I think this stuff is necessary, and I think sometimes a guy like me needs to say it cause you dont trust the guys that look different to me.

My feelings on Daggerspiders “popularity” and shipping culture as a bisexual woman

NGL....The fact that Daggerspider is one of the more popular Bionicle ships (well as popular as ships can be in this fandom), being the most popular non matoran and/or toa ship as well as probably the most popular villain ship as makes me genuinely teary eyed. Not just because it’s my OTP and it’s nice to see others ship it, but also because it’s proof of something I am a firm advocate of. That that there’s value and potential in exploring m/f ships in transformative fandom spaces.

Because just Im tired at the idea that the only good ships worth exploring in fanon are gay ones due to how there's so much straight content on TV anyway so let us gays have our crumbs and make everyone gay when like...to be frank a lot of canonical straight content fucking sucks as most of the time it's either used as a narrative plotdevice and/or just there because the mandates force us to have pairings because romance sells even if the story isn't built to that. And as such canonical het fucking sucks, characters have barely chemistry and a lot of the time women aren't allowd to be characters and just ar"the girlfriend" or some narrative plotdevice to motivate the male characters

And since like 70% canonical het content in media that latches fandoms (basically geek media) sucks and transformative fandoms whole idea is to fix canonso why...not try to make m/f ships that like??? not suck. There's a lot of potential and a genuinely untapped market at explorin m/f dynamics. Yet most of the time fandom eeither goes "everyones gay no straight people exist" or even if there's allowed to be straight ships it's basically only the "badass woman and a sore loser wifeguy who respects women 24/7" and treated in a very "pair the spares" type of way as opposed to genuinely interested in exploring the relationships.

Now to be fair, good well written canonical het ships exist in media, I’m not denying that. Heck, I ship some canonical het myself if it hits my fancy. But not only every media doesn't have well written het ships, I really hate the idea that "noncanon het ship aren't allowed to be explored because there’s so much canonical het and we gays are barely getting anything" esp if there's genuine potential in the dynamic.

And just...as a bisexual. The idea that you are only allowed to ship het ships if 1) it's canon or 2) it fits to the very narrow definition of what's allowed to be shipped (ie a girlboss-malewife ship) and even then you can't really think about it or make content for it is...restricting. And while yeah these people go on and on how it's because "gay people aren't represented in media let us have this", it feels that as a bisexual it's robbing me representation In a werid sense. Since like it feels that these people are telling me "the only type of content that you are allowed to enjoy and find cathartic compelling are samesex ships and that oppositesexships are automatically bad because hets are evil and oppress us". Which is like. Yeah I like women. But I also like men. And so, it's no surprise that while I have m/m and f/f ships (though less the latter due to how fandoms for those are either very pair the spades or outright lunatic), I also have m/f ships. Because not only character dynamics and the idea of two people loving and adoring each other (or hatefucking, hatefuck ships are fun too) is more important than what gender those characters are for me. But also because me being bisexual means I want to see ships that reflect the whole bisexual experience. And gay ships, as good as they are, are just part of the equation.

There's also like how, one of the reasons m/f ships are rarer is because in most media that attracts fandoms (ie geek media or anime) majority of the cast are men and the few women in them are treated either misogynistically or as plotdevices. As such no wonder the women aren’t that shipped with the men as not only do they have shitty canonical dynamics, they're barely characters at all. No wonder m/m ships are popular.

So like the reason Daggerspider being popular makes me so happy is because like People don't ship Daggerspider in a completionistic "pair the spades" type of way. People ship daggerspider because they like the characters and their dynamic. Most daggerspider shippers like what we get in canon and wish it was explored more. There's a lot of potential and things to appreciate and wish they had explored. And like, this proves to me that, just because a ship is m/f doesn't mean it cannot be shipped in same way m/m ships are. It doesn't mean that there isn't any potential to explore. It doesn't mean that you can't analyze it. Ships can be powerful, cathartic and enjoyed regardless of gender and to act like the only valid ships are same gender ones is frustrating. Especially as a bisexual woman who feels that fandom only allows me to practice one aspect of my sexuality rather than whole.

And this is all the more impressive because of the fact that Bionicle as a franchise is a cast mostly comprised of male characters, female characters are far and between. So the fact that, in a series like this there's not only a female character who is well-written and compelling,but that said character has a genuinely interesting relationship with a male character that's not explored enough because Gregs writing is like that™️ just...is a huge deal to me. Since that rarely happens in other series aimed at little boys (or even slightly bigger boys) due to what I discussed better even if said series actually were characterdriven rather than plot driven. And the fact that Bionicle, a series aimed at little boys where most women are either mediators or evil girlbossess and which sucks at making interesting relationships because the writer prefers to write characters in service of plot than other way around, still manages to have a compelling ship IN SPITE OF THAT and that people are latched onto it is so important to me. Because it proves that, if a ship has enough appeal in canon and potential outside of it, people will fall in love with it. And care about it. Regardless of the gender of the characters involved. And that’s the most powerful thing.

OOOOOO OKAY NOIR DETECTIVE SO . juno steel is my beloved and i want to hold his face season three doesnt have him narrating the episodes as much and its VERY sad . like i understand why they do it as a narrative thing because the whole first two seasons are about him isolating and forcing himself to be alone so yk hes always Narrating we dont get out of his head because hes self isolating he keeps people at too much of a distance to really Know them and as such We dont really know them either so we cant get out of his head because Juno cant get out of his head either . but now we're getting to the FOUND FAMILY portion of the show so we get to see other perspectives and get adjusted to the carte blanche and hes still like There its not like hes totally gone we just see him a little bit less . BUT I MISS HIM i miss his silly little theme song i miss his silly little melodramatic ramblings i miss him making silly little quips at horrible times to varying degrees of success . juno come home the bed is cold without you . also hes like the only nb rep in media that ive seen (im sure theres more but not that ive really interacted w) that isnt EXCLUSIVELY like they/them and 100% androgynous not that theres anything Wrong with that representation its important to show . but its cool to see a chara use he/him and be called a lady it makes me go :O in a good way . and he reminds me of my girlfriend and that makes me happy . what else . his voice is pretty . what are other things to tell u about juno steel . what can u hear . REALLY FUCKED UP SHIT happens in season one and nobody talks about that like no spoils . but he gets powers for a sec before they go away and NOBODY TALKS ABOUT IT its so weird to me . like that happened . and we all just gloss over it am i losing it . anyway im obsessed with him i dont talk about him as much as mr nureyev because i can like Analyze nureyev in a way i cant with him i can see into nureyevs little noggin he is my best friend i know him THROUGH AND THROUGH . but he makes me happy hes definitely one of my favorite characters in any media ever hes so silly (: :)

accessible/commercial/non-academic books:

sitcom: a history in 24 episodes by saul austerlitz

why we love sociopaths: a guide to late capitalist television by adam kotsko

television: a biography by david thomson

showrunners: the art of running a tv show by tara bennett (warning: this is Pro some very bad ppl but it is interesting)

tv heaven by jim sangster (this is literally just a huge list of the best/most notable uk/us shows of all time w a little mini review of all of them. i can spend hours flicking thru this book im obsessed w it)

sitcom style by diane friedman (this one isn't really like the others bc it's a photo book of studio sitcom sets w some annotations about why they look like that and i just think it's neat)

there's also all those show-specific essay collections which range from readable to dense (the iasip one and the community one are at opposite ends of this scale)

c/live ja/mes is a name that comes up a lot in this subject area for commercial writing but personally i do NOT recommend him, he's not actually that insightful he's just old and misogynistic lol

you dont get to tell me that representation doesnt matter when im crying over cemetery boys because its the first book ive ever read with a trans main character. i didnt realize how much this book would mean to me. because ive never had that in books or any media.

it is so fucking important that young kids have characters and stories that they can relate to and see themselves in because previous queer generations didnt have this. im still very young and part of a generation that is being exposed to more representation, and even i didnt see any queer characters until late middle school.

so when i see a character talking about things like his family deadnaming and misgendering him, wearing a binder and being uncomfortable without it, and not feeling confident enough to even use the correct bathroom, i think, “hey, i feel those things. i experience these things. i resonate with these things.” and i want all young lgbtqia kids to have that feeling because its the fucking best thing in the world.

He ignored it. It wasn’t real, someone was just pranking him. A demon? That's absolutely ridiculous. He went about his life as normal, mining, building, and repeating. There was a routine to it that he somewhat appreciated. He would fly over to the ocean on occasion, or the swamp. He would help his allies when they needed help, and then he would assume business as normal. The vines someone kept building around his palace didn’t really bother him, so he left them be. There weren’t that many anyways, not in comparison to the other empires.

So whatever. He really didn’t understand why everyone else was so concerned. There was no reason to panic, he insisted to his friends. No reason to panic when a messenger sprinted into his palace, talking much too fast for it to be a normal message between kingdoms. No reason to panic at all. Especially not when they say something about the ocean kingdom being overtaken. She's fine. The demon isn't real. There's no reason to panic.

He wasn’t panicking as he excused himself from the room, as he stumbled outside and took off in the direction of his wife’s kingdom. He wasn't panicking as he saw the lily pads and houses and palace below him, all covered in corruption. He wasn’t panicking when he saw her collapsed on the floor of her palace, covered in red vines.

A week later he walks into a completely different castle, in a land of flowers, not coral.

“How can I help?” he asks, tired and filled with grief, now unable to enjoy the bliss that comes with ignorance.
