There's something inherently ugly about how you ship Murtagh with Orrin. It's one thing to not like the main ship for a beloved character as set up by the author - valid - but it's another to push half of said ship away to force in your fave pasty white boy. You can write meta after meta after meta all you want about how poor Orrin is done dirty, or how that meanie Nasuada hurt him, or how the books don't put your fave background character on a pedestal, but all your writing amounts to is the fact that you've imprinted on Orrin and are now using him as a vessel for your original character. In your writing, he's not a character from the series anymore - he's your OC wearing Orrin's face and bearing Orrin's name. Which, it isn't bad to expand upon a sidelines character. But it's the way you turn around and spew how fandom fave Murtagh is in love with your OC that really shows the truth and the rot festering in you. You can cry and bemoan the romantic love Paolini has written between Murtagh and Nasuada, but your essay won't amount to jack shit if you're just going to turn around and replace Nasuada with your OC and suddenly sing it's praise.

Before you start decrying all of this, ask yourself: why are you so desperate to discredit canon's romance? It's one thing to think they should both remain single after the trauma they experienced throughout the series - fair take. But then why are you so eager to prop up your own ship? Is "Orrin" inherently more worthy of of Murtagh's love? Or is Nasuada simply not worthy, but instead in the way, in your eyes? You can wish all you want for people to love your writing, but that doesn't hide the rotten foundation of your ship: sidelining Nasuada to uplift your white fave and wanting him to have all that she does. No amount of rambling meta about how they're a "good ship" and they would work will ever cover up your inherent biases and -ism's that your poor sad white boy's ship is built upon.

Anon, let me just say this to you directly- block me. It's that easy. Sending something like this instead is an embarrassment. But since you've already said your piece, I'll go ahead and say mine.

Let me first bring up what you oddly wouldn't directly accuse me of (maybe even you knew what a blatant straw man it is), that being racism. I'm not going to make light of this. Racism in fandom is a real issue, and separating a ship with a character of color to ship white characters can be a symptom of that. I have never turned a blind eye to this and I make a continual effort to remain conscious of it because it's incredibly important to me that I'm not contributing to this kind of prejudice in fandom.

This pairing started years ago when I thought of a crack ship polycule with all three of them. Over time as I considered that, the idea of shipping Murtagh and Orrin developed into a distinct concept which I found more intriguing than shipping Murtagh and Nasuada. At that point, I made an active decision to examine my interest and determine if it was grounded in the way canon presents the individual qualities and dynamics of these specific characters, independent of the broad groups any of them fall into, or if it lacked any such basis in canon and only stemmed from an unconscious bias of mine. And if I didn't find any substantial elements of canon that supported the idea, I intended to put it away and work through my bias.

So I looked, and I found I could fully explain the reasons the ship appealed to me through the details in the books. I never made some public announcement about taking this issue into full consideration because it shouldn't be performative. Holding myself accountable is a basic personal responsibility which I take seriously, not something to make me look better. But it’s always felt meaningful to simply convey that I care about putting thought and reason into my ideas and my preference for my ship isn’t baseless. I’ve done that, but it seems I should be more direct here.

So let me lay out my thought process. Why am I not interested in shipping Murtagh and Nasuada? The things that deter me personally are both emotional and logistical issues. The major emotional issue to me is how disparate their priorities are. Murtagh prioritizes protecting loved ones, which causes issues when he accepts and complies with awful acts while trying to defend them. Nasuada prioritizes the good of her cause, which causes issues when she dismisses another person’s wellbeing when it’s in the way of her goals. Murtagh’s character arc is about learning the best thing he can do for his loved ones might be accepting their willingness to make sacrifices, suggesting he becomes aware of his issue and would try to correct that going forward. However, Nasuada still doesn’t seem aware of her issue after the war, given her policy about magicians and her minimal concern for Roran, so that still presents an underlying problem that would badly exacerbate their serious trauma until it’s addressed.

None of that is a moral judgment on anything. Both of them could cause any number of other issues; it’s just stating where they stand. And I still think they could be written in a way that stays true to their characters while working through those issues so that they stay together. I think it’d be exceptionally challenging, and it still might not be to my own taste, but it has that potential. But there are also logistical issues. Nasuada is queen in Uru’baen. I genuinely feel like this is so meaningful to her character, a very fitting culmination of her aspirations, and if she were to take substantial spans away from her throne, it would be a disservice to how she was written. That said, with the way I characterize Murtagh, I really don’t feel that he would want to openly settle in a place defined by politics and power struggles. I feel like it would be very unfulfilling for him and Thorn, especially in the city of his tumultuous childhood and their tortuous enslavement. So given the dissatisfaction if Nasuada left the rule she wants and deserves and the discontent of Murtagh living in Uru’baen, I struggle to imagine them as more than a distant, intermittent relation.

So that’s why I personally don’t enjoy shipping them. Of course, it’s subjective, but I feel like it’s also fair, and you seem to suggest that you do too. So let’s move on. So now the question is if a potential relationship with Orrin would present the same or equivalent issues that I overlook just because he's a white man.

Naturally, this is subjective too, but I say no. Of course there are still possible emotional issues between them (if there were none it’d be boring), but they’re different. Given the way specific way Orrin grieves for his friends and struggles to have faith in their cause when he sees the risk of his people being killed, I believe he is also more focused on looking after individuals than pursuing a cause. I feel like that lays a smoother groundwork with Murtagh, who has been hurt by people who dismissed his wellbeing, and that reduces a lot of underlying pain between them. Orrin’s other struggles, like defeatism, fear, and hopelessness, as well as yearning for recognition and autonomy, align with Murtagh’s experience more in a way that makes their emotional issues more interesting to engage with.

With logistical issues, obviously Orrin is also a king. But I don’t find that presents the same issues either. I interpret that Orrin didn’t want to be king and isn’t content in that role. When the matter of Murtagh’s desire to avoid being openly tied to Surda’s seat of power arises, I find a much more interesting and balanced potential story where Orrin also hopes to leave his crown and they support each other in their search for a home that they can both make their own. The discrepancies I personally find so bothersome between Murtagh and Nasuada don’t come up with Murtagh and Orrin, so I enjoy their ship more. It’s just about my interpretation of compatibility. That is the crux of my thought process. No one has to agree with it, but I believe it stands as a fair assessment.

You insist that I ask myself why I prefer one ship over another. I've done that. I've already been doing that the entire time and will continue to do so. You keep whining that I make a lot of meta analysis about aspects of the characters and how I feel like they would or wouldn't mesh together, and yeah. That's the whole fucking point. In the same way I just did, those posts explore and articulate the concrete reasons one ship appeals to me and one doesn't. For years I've diligently asked myself why I'm drawn to Murtagh/Orrin more than Murtagh/Nasuada and I'm fully secure and confident in my answer that it's the emotional and narrative possibilities they have that appeal to me more. If I was given all the details of these characters, stripped of any names, descriptions, genders, ect. I know I would still really love this ship.

And that's not even to say that it's somehow "better" (it's just different in a way that suits my taste), or that Murtagh and Nasuada's relationship must be meaningless or non-existent if it's not romantic. In my story where I ship him and Orrin, he and Nasuada go through struggles, but as they grow, they're able to reconcile and learn to better support each other and their relationship ends in a much better place.

(Also, if you're talking about my “essay” that Murtagh's true name doesn't change because he fell for Nasuada, that's irrelevant to shipping them. The series could end with them getting married and they could be my all time otp, and it'd still be true that falling in love didn't change his true name. It's just a separate part of his character arc.)

For another thing, Murtagh and Nasuada are NOT a canon ship, and that does matter. For example, it has very different implications to change an interracial ship that is happily married in canon. In the IC, it is canon that they're attracted to each other, but nothing beyond that. (And I've never even discredited that! In fact, I've said their attraction is well written and in character. It's included in my story; I didn't overwrite it.) They're never in a relationship and there's no set up that implies romance is inevitable for their stories. You yourself acknowledge that there are very valid reasons to interpret that a romantic relationship wouldn't work between them!!! So if it's fine to not ship Murtagh and Nasuada as a couple, why is it suddenly heinous to imagine Murtagh with someone else?

It’s not. Your claims are far more baseless and distasteful. Why do you act like Nasuada couldn’t possibly be respected or worthy without Murtagh’s affection? Why do you act like pointing out her mistakes condemns her entirely, as if she’s not allowed to have any flaws? Why do you think a relationship with Murtagh is equivalent to all that Nasuada has? I won’t make your kind of moral accusations about a stranger, but I will simply say that I find that very objectionable. I love Nasuada for being such a unique, flawed, and fascinating character who is so much more than all that. And if you made such a volatile, deplorable, inappropriate response simply to the idea that Murtagh- a fictional character- could love someone else, you might need to take a step back. You’re being cruel.

I used to like Kelly Kapoor a lot back in the days because I could relate to her and was into such comedy style of life. I really liked being funny and just making people laugh, that was my idea of social bonding. Though now I have matured after a lot of efforts (8th house moon) so I am in tune with occult and spirituality. It is possible to mature as a Gemini person but for that the native has to uncover layers of emotions and repeatedly practice being in tune with the underlying emotions rather than escape it through socializing. Contrary to my personality, I also spent a lot of time in solitude just thinking about concepts and ideas and that solitary nature became natural habit to me.

As a matter of fact, that urge to speak just to get a reaction out of people, being goofball and silly is legit for the Gemini but it will only work with people like Ryan, Erin, etc. (who are also scatterbrain) so that restricts their dating pool because people that are deep and stable will not respond to their advances. Also pay attention to how detached Gemini is from their emotions, they can sing the most romantic song from Titanic and not a feel a single damn emotion because they are only putting up a performance. They can be loyal for sure if you tick many of their boxes (but do not expect them to be loyal in their fantasies because that mind will go places).

To be able to feel emotions, a person has to be courageous because it is not just happiness and highs that are the emotional range, there is also sadness to anger and shame to resentment and fear to empathy that have to be felt. Since Gemini are dismissive of deep emotions in themselves, they also ignore and belittle emotional depth in others. If anything, they will make jokes out of everything and laugh at themselves instead of feeling the emotion in the moment. Such emotional invalidation can be cause for trauma and abuse in others, especially if they are parents then their children will never feel like they are allowed to have emotions. The fact is that Gemini deals with mind, thoughts, words and it simply does not deal with emotions. In a positive light, this characteristic makes them easygoing and malleable, they do not hold grudges and bounce back from sufferings and problems without a sweat.

But in the negative light, Gemini's emotions pile up under the surface and it may show up as projection issues in their children or the people around them and close to them. Sometimes Gemini can get sadistic and test how far they can push emotional people's button, how much they can irritate them and push them to show emotions. Display of emotions by others oddly satisfies their own inferior function that they are unable to feel.

I would like to mention that we as a society know what emotions we ought to display in what situations. We know these social conventions and formalities. So if you spot a Gemini crying over an emotional video, do not think that they actually feel empathy for that, they simply know "this emotional scene means I have to shed some tears for social display". This is why they can come off as manipulative and insincere because they display emotions they do not actually feel. They will say "I love you" 10 times a day and still flirt with others because that I love you was a lip service, a social convention, a cultural performance, because this is what couples ought to say to each other - not because they actually love you.

If the natal chart is nicely balanced by water placements, do expect a change of personality in later years. Otherwise you need not worry because they naturally gravitate towards fellow non committal and fickle people in relationships and friendships. But if you are in the same classroom or office with them, yeah that will be your daily dose of unnecessary headache. Though I would expect Geminis to be working in media, cinema, entertainment, social dealings based sectors where social personality and charm help prosper the business and test of character is not a requisite. In relationships, Gemini will be your laughter buddy, binge watch buddy, gossip buddy, brainstorm about a 100 things buddy, social media addict buddy, constantly texting silly messages buddy, let's hangout somewhere buddy.

Do not expect them to be religious or spiritual, they will instead rationalize everything, life, God, soul, death. Moodiness is seen, though it is triggered by lack of intellectual highs not because they are feeling deep emotions and sensitivity.

Waiting for their turn to speak, already thinking of what to say before you end your sentence, Gemini is just like that. Can be into online dating because Gemini rules internet, messaging and technology. This is life - a bunch of personality traits and their daily repetition. That is why people do not change on fundamental levels. I would personally not trust a Gemini (and I am a Gemini) though that does not mean they don't add value to life and society. Their value is their ability to communicate, play with words, deliver speeches, write books and novels, manager of languages and dealer of conversations. It is literally what makes us humans highly intelligent and superior to other species.

the good omens meta post

this is not going to be very nice, and it will contain all the spoilers

I am a Good Omens book fan. Moreover, I am a Good Omens fandom fan, a fanfiction reader and writer since before the show ever came out. Also, I love Michael Sheen and David Tennant so much that I watched all three series of "Staged."

So when I say I found the show disappointing, I don't just mean as an adaptation, but as a piece of media that has to stand on its own feet. I know, for any viewer who wasn't invested in the Aziraphale/Crowley beats of the first season, it was basically unwatchable. I know because I tried to get a lot of non-shippers to watch, and the only people who could enjoy it at all cared about the love story at its heart. That's okay. It's nice when things are made for us.

The thing I love about shipping culture, and fan culture, is that it's a corner of the internet where soft-hearted people with big feelings and the desire to indulge in those feelings can be together in community. It's a place where we can intellectualize those feelings, or simply scream together. I've been in fandoms for more than two decades, oh my god. It's one of the only places I feel wholly seen, and totally accepted. (I mean, I've been a victim of online bullying, but who hasn't?) I deeply love my fellow fans. We are so creative, so sensitive, so observant. I really love us: what we make. What we do. How we speak. How we interact with media and transform it into something greater than the sum of its parts.

That's how I feel about Good Omens fandom. I think the works this fandom makes-- the art, the fic, the everything-- are overall of a higher quality than the book and the show. And that's okay. Some fandoms are like that. Not everything is eternal art, perfected to the highest aspiration of the medium. It's still valid. It still counts. It still carries a lot of meaning, for me personally and I know for you, if you're reading this.

I say all of this to contextualize why I felt season two was so genuinely mean-spirited. It felt cruel. I am a major fan of fan service, and I love being a fan who gets serviced. But this fan service reminded me of the book "How To Date Men When You Hate Men," in that it might well have been subtitled "How To Service Fans When You Hate Your Fans." It pointedly retconned moments from season one where people had written the most fill-in fics, e.g. having?????? them go???????? to a nightclub?????? AFTER A BLITZ BOMBING?! You know what people in London did after a Blitz bombing?! They hid in their homes or shelters with the blackout curtains on the windows until daybreak! I couldn't help but feel the zombie Nazis plot (what was that?!) was being used to make sure there was no room for the formerly ambiguous night after Aziraphale fell in love. After season one, fic writers had imagined hundreds of little sexy rendezvous after the Blitz bombing scene, but no more. Now, they can't be canon. In fact, nothing set in the past 6,000 years can be canon, now. So much of this season felt engineered to poison the sweet little ambiguities of season one, and you will never convince me it wasn't intentional.

I think it's important to say what we all know: fan activities like fanfiction and fanart are extremely femme-coded behaviors. Regardless of your personal gender identity, fanfic writers are majority female, and the other activities fans perform (making fanart, cosplaying) tend to be gendered (in the media and by outsiders) as somehow female. It's important that we acknowledge this even if it isn't true-- it's similar to the ways that careers like teaching and nursing are feminized, regardless of who actually teaches and nurses. This is also extremely important to acknowledge because women are PAINFULLY underrepresented behind the scenes of television.

Fewer women than men actually get to make the art that eventually inspires fandom. There were no female writers on Good Omens. There were no female directors. The cishet male creators, by which I mean to include both writers and the director (of Sherlock infamy, by the way), have no cinematic or narrative vocabulary for the androphilic gaze. [That's the gaze that sexualizes and objectifies men, a term on loan to me from a non-binary academic friend. It's the gaze we use when we write m/m slash. This is a larger discussion, but the reason you have predominantly femme writers and consumers of m/m erotica is in part because it is a break from the male gaze-- there is no man objectifying a woman in these stories. You might have a queer identity, too, and that might be part of it, but the fact is that one of the appealing functions of m/m erotica is the absence of a woman being objectified. We, the readers, get to do the objectifying-- in complete and utter contrast to most media. It also bears reiterating that regardless of your gender identity and sexual orientation, you exist in a world where Western media is constantly feeding you film and television from the POV of the male gaze. That is why m/m erotica especially, and to some degree f/f erotica, is transgressive, by the way. It's also transgressive to just find more than one man hot, because we're not supposed to.] Anyway, creators like the men who made Good Omens might really think they speak our language, but it will always be a second language to them, and a lot of nuance gets lost. In my opinion, that's why the kiss scene was so devastating. It was joyless.

I know people will say (and have said) that it was joyless and passionless in service of the angst, but fanfic readers know: having even a second of passion followed by the angst makes the pain that much sweeter. It would have made the conflict, and the cliffhanger, even harsher. The writers and director behind that scene do not understand what every fanfiction writer with a vibrator knows. They fundamentally do not understand us. It breaks my heart to say it, because I don't think it has to be true across the board, but I felt it so strongly with Good Omens, season two. I felt so strongly that they were trying to speak our language without having the humility to speak with us, to understand us. They understand us only as viewers and as consumers. They don't understand us as collaborators, because they don't think they have to collaborate with us. But fans are, in a very real sense, collaborators-- collaborators in making meaning, and collaborators in making other people money. Understanding that symbiosis is what transformative works are about. This season felt like it was intended to remind us that these characters are not ours. We are welcome to play in our own sandbox, but we are not a part of theirs. And if the show had bothered to hire any femme creatives, there may have been someone above the line to bridge the gap between what they thought they were doing and what we took from it.

I also can't help feeling that we're being held emotionally hostage to get the ransom money of a third season. IMO, the second season was genuinely bad television. Like, sincerely appalling storytelling. I'm talking about everything before the kiss, too. (I can't even discuss the kiss right now.) The so-called "mystery" of Gabriel's memory was nonsensical. We had no reason to care and the "clues" we followed were incoherent until the finale. It wasn't a fun mystery we could follow, and let's be honest, we were all just there for the Aziraphale/Crowley moments. Even those moments were wasted, imo.

What was the purpose of the magic show and the miracle blocker? Was it just for all the sexual double-entendres of giving and receiving and shooting guns? Because, I mean, I love a good dirty joke, but what was its utility in the structure of the season? What did we learn? Did anyone change? Did anyone go on a journey? It failed at every screenwriting 101 lesson I've ever been taught.

Why even have Crowley and Aziraphale setting up the lesbians if the lesbians aren't going to be set up? Why have a monologue about how you can't force two people together just because you want them to be together? That whole storyline felt like subtext (and not particularly subtle subtext) of the author stubbornly wresting narrative control from fans.

And it was FILLED with squandered opportunities. One of my favorite moments was Crowley referencing humans in the rain confessing their love a la Richard Curtis movies. Wow! What a beautiful set-up for his confession later in the-- wait, you're not even going to use that perfect set-up? OK, but you're going to do a set-up, right? Oh, you're not? You're just going to have the lesbians tell Crowley that he and Aziraphale have "never REALLY talked" and think that's a set-up? Girl, I guess!

I don't think on the basis of writing, Good Omens season two earned a third season. I would be very surprised if it got one. And if it doesn't get one, that's frankly justified! No one is going to watch this show who isn't there for Aziraphale/Crowley, which-- again-- are my people. But we are simply not enough, and a good show knows that it has to engage both shippers and casual viewers. My guess is that they don't get a third season, because no one but us hardcore fans will watch that trainwreck again and again, and then Ne*l Ga*man and the actors will do some kind of staged reading of a third season-ish script for charity or something to tie up the loose ends. I'm old-fashioned in that I think you should use the money and time and resources you've been given to tell a story, not just set up a story. I feel like fans are being held emotionally hostage to push Amazon to pay the proverbial ransom of a third season (and it is a ransom, it does line pockets that are not yours or mine). I feel like Ga*man made that explicit in some of his Tumblr posts!

Which is not to say the show might not have been more successful if indeed it had been the pure fan service everyone is saying it is. But also, it wasn't pure fan service. This was not an exercise in giving the people what they want. It was an exercise in asserting narrative control, which to me is the opposite of what fans want, need, and deserve.

So is Hürrem. So what if they are personable? So is Hürrem (at least to the sultan, she was an enormous bitch to everyone else). So what if they are clever? If Süleyman wanted clever, he would never fall madly in love with Mahidevran, let alone Hürrem. They needed something more, something that Hürrem had, but no other woman that Süleyman had ever been with did – the sheer, unbridled audacity, and in a way that would register as endearing rather than insulting to His Majesty at that. Ibrahim would wear his eyes and shoes down before he found such a woman at harem or a slave market, and in the meantime Hürrem grew more powerful and dangerous with every night she spent with Süleyman.

Well, he supposed, if you want something done, you have to do it yourself.

   And sure, it won’t be easy on him. The entire time he considered this plan, he was thinking of Hatice. But let’s face it, he wasn’t ever going to get Hatice – and if that was the case, he was ready to sacrifice himself for the greater good.

   He found the perfect opportunity to strike one night. They just finished working and in the usual case, Süleyman would call for Hürrem or simply go to sleep, too tired to perform. Ibrahim wanted to make sure he did neither this time. So, as Süleyman got up from the table, Ibrahim said in as casual a tone as possible. „I would like to spend one night with you sometimes.“

Süleyman shot him an expression that told him in no uncertain terms that what he said was just plain weird (as if Ibrahim didn’t know).

„In conversation, I mean! You know I sleep alone every night, Your Majesty, and the loneliness can be truly crushing.“

„We’ll find you a wife, then.“

Ibrahim laughed; he decided to treat it as a joke despite nothing in Süleyman’s expression indicating such a thing.

Luckily, Süleyman decided not to follow up on that. Instead, he cast a longing glance at the door, then turned back to Ibrahim. „Would one night truly satisfy you?“

„I can bring wine, Your Majesty. Kamran agha, a former servant of yours from Manisa, if you remember him... Well, he owns a vineyard in Cephalonia, and he gifted me a bottle, so that I might tell all of my friends about its quality.“ Well, there went the stuff he wanted to serve at his wedding... Which he wasn’t having anytime soon, so what gives.

Süleyman’s face brightened. „Why didn’t you start with that?! Go to your room, Ibrahim, and bring that wine at once!“

He didn’t start with that because, frankly, he didn’t think this trough very well.

   A few minutes later, Ibrahim was filling Süleyman’s cups with the generosity of a man who always has more wine (he didn’t, but the pretense was necessary to maintain at the moment). Wine always made Süleyman more cheerful, chattier and, at least untill the alcohol-induced impotency kicked in, sluttier; under normal circumstances, it took the form of bawdy songs and jokes, but Ibrahim knew he could go further if he really wanted to, and in the absence of a pretty concubine (who hopefully was smart enough to not spread the news of the vices His Majesty partook in)... Who’s to say?

   They sat on the terrace, sharing gossip about pashas with only a thin veneer of „well, sultan simply must have up-to-date knowledge of the activities of his high officials, no?“. A staggeringly short amount of time later, half of the bottle was gone, and sultan leaned towards Ibrahim in an intimate gesture that Ibrahim’s tipsy brain wanted to use several times as a segway to a kiss. Only then did he manage to find a good conversation topic for his purposes. „They say – Majesty I am not saying it’s true, I don’t think it is, it’s certainly slander of your most faithful official besides me – ahem, I mean, they say Bostanci Mehmet pasha likes young boys.“

Süleyman looked like he was thinking, but considering the stage of his drunkenness (which continued to get more severe as Ibrahim kept filling his cup and he continued to sip it eagerly) that was unlikely to actually be the case. „Why?“

„What?“

„Why are they saying it?“

„Well, he has a lot of very handsome men in his service, and isn’t married, and people say a healthy man can’t go that long without... Ahem...“

„He has no concubines, then?“

„Noone knows! He certainly doesn’t brag about it. Or he could seek out the services of prostitutes...“

„Of what gender?“

Ibrahim’s face lit up. „Ahhh! You see, that is a very good question, Your Majesty! I myself felt tempted, a couple of times...“

Süleyman lifted his eyebrows. „Have you?“

„I never went trough with it, but a man cannot help but wonder. Have you ever?“

„What? Consider sodomy? Hardly.“

„B-because... You see, there is one man, and one man only...“

„A prostitute?“

„No! Oh, Allah...“

Ibrahim’s alcohol-blunted judgement took this for an ideal opportunity to strike. He leaned in closer and pressed a kiss on Süleyman’s lips, but they, sadly, remained unresponsive. Instead, when he pulled out of it, Süleyman’s face was confused and a little offended. „What are you doing?!“

„Sire, I...“

„Have you ever kissed anyone?! Because that’s not how you do it!“

„Well, sire, I have, but it was solely in a professional setting, so to speak, and obviously prostitutes...“

   His drunken idiocy was mercifully stopped by Süleyman’s kiss. The experience was undescribable; Süleyman truly could kiss like noone. Years of practice, he supposed, but the passion obvious in every brush of his lips still flattered Ibrahim immensely. He nonetheless wasn’t prepared for Süleyman’s tongue that surreptitiously slipped in between his lips like some small animal under a fence. His hand flew onto Süleyman’s cheek as if of its own will, at which point Süleyman deepened the kiss even further. Eventually, they had to break it up, and as they did, Ibrahim saw Süleyman’s eyes blazing in victory. Ibrahim, afraid of Süleyman coming to his senses, climbed onto his lap and started kissing him in the same manner Süleyman previously kissed Ibrahim. A startled noise escaped the hasodabaşi when Süleyman grabbed his ass with the lustfulness of, well, tipsy sultan Süleyman. Sultan was at least able to think straight (pun not intended) enough to part his lips from Ibrahim’s and murmur. “Let’s go inside.”

   Ibrahim readily jumped from his lap and followed him inside the chamber, where Süleyman’s expression unfortunately grew embarrassed. His returning sanity was confirmed by what he said next. “Pargali… It’s getting late. We should be in bed by now.”

Ibrahim was gripped with desperation; a scheme failing was one thing, but what if Süleyman decides that he doesn’t need a man whom he had kissed in his vicinity, because of the shame if not the temptation? With this thought, he dropped to his knees and started kissing Süleyman’s hands desperately. “Sire, please, don’t send me away just yet… I can serve you in a manner no man or a woman had served you before, devote myself to you so completely as if your needs were my needs and your body was my own. No sultan has ever had a servant as faithful as I aim to be to you. Had I not saved your life several times? Had I not put my body between you and the assassin’s knife? I have no…”

“Thank you, Ibrahim, that’s quite enough.” said Süleyman in an almost amused tone. “Go back a little, please. What do you mean by service, exactly?”

“Whatever you ask for, Your Majesty! All of my body is yours – my hands, lips… Just everything.”

Süleyman turned his gaze from Ibrahim’s face, thinking, before eventually opening his mouth again with an intrigued expression. “All of it, you say?”

“Indeed!”

“And if I ask you to not question my orders or say anything to anyone…”

“Your secrets are safe with me, my sultan. Have they not always been?”

“Undress, then.”

   Ibrahim happily obliged, though he was somewhat worried of what comes next. No matter. If the things get though, he’ll just think of Hürrem’s face when she learns Ibrahim has entered a direct competition with her. She can never be sultan’s bitch quite like-

“So!”

Süleyman’s voice tore Ibrahim away from his revelry. Only then did he realize Süleyman was already naked as well. He braced himself for truly anything Süleyman could ask of him in situation… Well, except what Süleyman actually did ask for.

“Are you ready to serve?”

“I am!”

“No, you’re not.”

Ibrahim winced. “Come again?”

Süleyman sighed and came to Ibrahim, kissing him once again. Ibrahim kissed him back with great pleasure, slowly realizing just how good he can feel – and he felt even better with his hand stroking Ibrahim’s privates. Pargali gave off a moan of pleasure, slightly trembling when Süleyman stepped away, then further and further…

   Walking backwards, Süleyman walked into the bedframe, swearing upon hitting it. He fixed his gaze on Ibrahim’s erect penis, then turned around and laid his hands on the bed, ending up on all fours in technical terms, though not in spirit. “You said you would do anything and that all of your body belongs to me, correct?”

“Yes, sire.”

“Well then.”

“I… I don’t understand.”

“Your penis is also part of your body, if I am not mistaken.”

“Yes, but… What am I supposed to do with it?” He knew it. He could at least tell from Süleyman’s stance. His eyes saw, but his mind boggled too much to admit it.

“Ibrahim, you dense clown. There’s a small bottle of rose oil in the bath. I sincerely hope I do not need to spell it out for you any more than that…”

Ibrahim slowed started blinking again as Süleyman turned back towards him with a stern expression. “But… Why? You’re the sultan of the whole world, kalif of islam…”

“Ibrahim I swear, stop mentioning religion in this of all moments…”

“What I am saying is – why?! Of all the things I might offer to you, why this?!”

“Curiosity, my dear. There’s nothing more to it. I’ve penetrated before, I know how it feels. But to be penetrated… Well, that’s something I can only experience with you.”

Ibrahim’s eyes lit up in excitement. Even in his wildest dreams he could not imagine this night going as well as it did. “It would be an honour for me to show you, then.”

When Ibrahim walked away from sultan’s chambers in the morning, he met Hürrem in those red dress of hers that must’ve driven Süleyman mad whenever he was about to spend a night with her. He gave her a smirk, but walked away from her before she could say anything. The image of what her reaction might be had she known of the last night made him almost giddy.

Fuck Hürrem sultan.

And fuck Hatice.

From now on, he and Süleyman needed noone else. And should he still doubt it, Ibrahim was ready was ready to fight for this truth with the same tenacity Hürrem fought for her own supremacy in sultan’s bedchamber.

The game was now well and truly on.

An Overthinker’s Reaction to Neige Blanche (Twisted Wonderland)

I finished reading Book 5 of the game’s English version a couple days ago, and something’s been bothering me about its ending compared to previous chapters. While the other chapters thus far have done a great job with their independent stories for each of the student-villain parallels, the ending of Book 5 and its message left me feeling sour.  I couldn’t really place exactly why for a while, because my immediate thoughts on the ending as I was reading it didn’t seem justified for how I knew the story needed to go for its theme to truly carry weight; however, the more I’ve thought about it, I’ve drawn it to one conclusion:

Despite being based on Snow White and her pure nature, I do not like Neige Blanche or think he’s all that great a person--or even a true match to Snow White in personality.    

This may seem unfair due to Neige’s very brief appearance in Twisted Wonderland so far, but there’s some off things about him I can’t shake and I mainly just want to get these thoughts out of my head. Because it still hasn’t been that long since the chapter dropped and I want to avoid spoilers, I’ll elaborate further below the cut: 

I’ll say this right off the bat because I can already see the argument: I don’t care that Night Raven College lost the Song and Dance Championship.  For one thing, based on the foreknowledge we’re given that the Royal Sword Academy constantly wins and that even minor events in the stories/special events have the player character get accustomed to losing makes the SDC loss kind of expected as it’s still early in the game’s main story.  For another, plot-wise, the moral Vil has to learn about accepting himself and his own successes as an individual despite falling behind Neige would’ve likely fallen flat had NRC won since winning would’ve only been giving him the external validation Vil’s been after.  NRC winning also wouldn’t have given us the very real detail that Vil’s self-acceptance is going to take time.  This aspect of the chapter was handled extremely well.  Exactly why NRC lost though, is another matter--and I don’t mean the part about Rook making the deciding vote...

The SDC is described as being a premiere competition taking the best vocal artists and performers between the schools for the entertainment/music industry to seek out budding talent with massive reach in Twisted Wonderland’s world.  Despite this, however, we’re supposed to accept that Neige’s group not only won with a simple children’s song, but won despite having a completely poor performance. How come? In short, thanks to cute points. Allow me to pull some quotes from Chapter 60:

“All those dance moves are so simple, anyone could do them.  They’re not even in sync.”

“One of ‘em almost fell over! Neige helped him catch himself, but all of these guys look like they could go toppling at any second.”

“Frankly, the quality is nothing worthy of note.”

“They’re dancing is out of sync and their harmonies are clunky at best... but I’m glued to the performance.”            

This isn’t just the NRC team describing the Neige’s group’s performance, but outsiders in the film crews as well.  The only reason people were “awestruck” by it is because they thought they dwarves were kids and somehow that made it more “family accessible.”  Fine, since this is a competition based on popular vote as opposed to judges, I can accept the win wouldn’t necessarily be based on difficulty or actual skill.  I would’ve even accepted it if everyone voted simply because Neige was in the act because there’s plenty of people in the world who show favoritism and can’t be objective.  However, let me ask you this: Would you think that the average primary school choir would deserve to win a competition like American Idol or Britain’s Got Talent?  Because that’s what this effectively is: A show where people are expected to perform on a professional level, but somehow, an amateur act made it into the final round.  

Neige claimed they practiced hard, but the descriptions of their performance say otherwise.  You could say that, despite all their effort, they just couldn’t improve.  However, we have to keep in mind that the dwarves are not actual kids, Neige himself is a professional performer like Vil, and they should’ve had the time to train and prepare just like the NRC team.  Furthermore, from the way Vil in this same chapter manages to describe the NRC group as being “outplayed” despite this, I can only conclude that using the dwarves for their childlike appearance was a tactic with no basis on actual talent.  Because people tend to feel sad and guilty when kids lose, so they’re going to give them more leeway than teenagers and adults.  This is a complete slap in the face to what the competition is supposed to the be.  It’s not emotionally resonating or captivating: It’s manipulative.  

Spinning off this to finally focus a little more on Neige himself, also in Chapter 60, he describes that his whole reason for joining the competition was “because he wanted to share some special memories with his friends at school.”  On the surface, that sounds like a wholesome line, but what do Neige’s friends have to do with this?  We can assume that the dwarves naturally are his friends, mimicking Snow White’s relationship with her own batch of seven.  The problem with this though is that that would be like Vil picking only Pomefiore students because they share a dorm or excluding Deuce, Ace, Grim, and the player from the auditions because of the fight they had at the start of the Book.  Neige picked his friends to perform with him?  In a massive competition representing his school and involving actual prospects in the music/entertainment industries?  Despite the fact that they can’t sing or dance worth a flip and likely showed little to no signs of improvement as the weeks of training gearing up to the competition went on?

Did the Royal Sword Academy not have an audition process like NRC? Because there is no way the dwarves would have passed it if they were as bad as they were at the actual competition despite all the practice they claim to have had for it.  Granted, we can say the same from our main four freshman at NRC, but even if we ignored the reason why Ace and Deuce were specifically picked (for being a gamble, but both with unique qualities to bring to the group), we can also confidently say that they improved enough to perform well.  We can’t say that for the dwarves.  Therefore, this means one of two things: We’d either have to believe that everyone at RSA is just as bad as them if not worse or that, again, the dwarves weren’t picked on actual merit.  And going off Neige’s friend line... they weren’t.  This means that countless performers at RSA were denied the opportunity to show off their talent and potentially get actual deals simply because Neige wanted his friend group with him.  That is garbage.  

Now, I don’t think Neige is a bad person: I didn’t see any strong hints of his kind, bubbly personality being fake or that he might intend to cause harm.  However, based on what I just explained, I do think he’s an inconsiderate and thoughtless person.  He might not have thought of how picking his friend group meant that he stepped over a lot of talented people who truly deserved the chance to perform on stage at the SDC, or that using the child factor of his performance was a very dirty tactic for a competition that was supposed to be based on talent.

That’s the reason I don’t think Neige completely works as a Snow White parallel.  Snow White could be too trusting/innocent at times, but she wasn’t clueless and did consider how her actions affected others.  When she scared the forest animals after fleeing into the woods, she apologized for it even though it was a simple mistake due to her own fears.  When she entered the dwarves’ cottage for the first time with the intention of hiding out there, she knew she couldn’t just stay there for free and did her best to be useful.  I don’t see Neige showing that same level of consideration toward anyone--be it his competitors or his schoolmates.     

Allow me to bring in the headmaster of RSA, Ambrose, into this, since he also does something similar, and it’ll lead to my final point. When Ambrose speaks with Crowley, he pretty much laughs to the latter’s face about winning the competition and how they’ll soon make it an even one-hundred victories between their schools.  Even though he’s light-hearted about it and is friendly with Crowley, you can tell that it still gets to NRC’s headmaster.  Why wouldn’t it?  That’s rubbing salt into a long festering wound.  No one likes to lose--especially that often over the course of several years--and commenting about how NRC has constantly lost shows a major lack of tact from Ambrose.  

While it’s still too early to say, this indicates a trend with most of the hero-parallel characters.  This behavior is that of good people who are used to winning and getting their way without struggle or consequence, those who don’t earn their victories.  Right now, they seem like fairytale protagonists who skipped the actual story and jumped straight to their happy endings. Think of the relationship between Kalim and Jamil: Kalim is a good person, but he’s also incredibly spoiled and has had most hardships cleared out of the way for him since a young age.  This allowed him to be inconsiderate of Jamil without meaning to, hurting someone he’s always considered a best friend.  I can see the RSA characters falling into a similar category: Neige, the actor the gets all the best roles and stays on top of the industry no matter what, and Ambrose, the headmaster whose school has won countless victories in a constant streak without fail.  The differences between them both and Kalim though is that we as an audience have had time to see more of Kamil’s good qualities and that he has learned a lesson after Book 4.  I haven’t followed the JP version of the game to know how much has been expanded upon with the RSA characters in later books.  Still, I can see this being heavy potential for their development.

Right now though, it makes the RSA gang very hard to like.  For me, it’s not a matter of disliking them because they’re acting as the current antagonists--the literal definition; still not villains, mind you--but because of their poor show of behavior and oblivious regard of it.  In contrast, I never had a problem with Leona’s nephew and brother because neither of them could help the position they were born into any more than Leona and Cheka is still a child who can’t understand how complicated the family/royal situation is.  Neige, meanwhile, should’ve at least remotely understood how hard it is for performers to fight for their chance to shine, since that’s his industry, and should’ve put more focus on merit rather than his own desires for the competition.

I do not know how other eclectic practitioners choose the elements of different traditions they add to theirs,but I rather let elements to find their way in mine.Most people judging eclectic practitioners assume often not so correctly that the practitioner picked and chose whatever they pleased consciously ,just because they had to add new things to make their path more colorful and just because they felt like insulting the tradition of someone else.Yes,there are people who do that and do not back up ,when someone tells them that is not the way to go about things,but sometimes Entity,Deity or other type of spiritual being from certain path chose to work with you instead and let say they gave you different instructions to follow when worshiping them or working with them.What way will be more valid then the one that you have been given to practice or is it the way of those that worked for many years with the entity in question ?This is more related to the personal relation between the practitioner and the forces he or she work with ,but there is also the notion that on certain level we are all connected and that most paths/religions streamed from the same source ,but since humans are incarnated spirits their cultural background and their connection to their body demanded for certain taboos.

It is my position that there is a stream of consciousness from which all beings manifest from as a direct result of that consciousness becoming autonomous. We are all spirits and the spirits we think of as deities are the same as us without the manifestation into the flesh. We are all one, but I do not look at my neighbour and think we are the same. We manifest differently here and now and I believe this is the same for deities. They are all one, but when they operate in a manner that denotes specificity, they are manifesting as a particular being with very specific qualities and personalities.

Now the issue is that we seem to believe spirituality is a closed endeavour and always has been since time began. This is simply not true and eclecticism is not a modern concept. The Greeks and Romans are prime examples of this, the Greeks and Egyptians too. Look at the Greek Magical Papyri and you will see Jewish, Christian, Egyptian, and Greek deities all in the same spell!

The fact is when you are working with a spiritual current you can't help who knocks at your door. Sometimes it can be beings you don't have any connection to in terms of your culture or birth. Sometimes its beings you never dreamed of working with. Sometimes new relationships will form, sometimes they will not.

This whole issue of syncretism and adoption of practices from different cultures has become frowned upon in modern times due to issues such as cultural appropriation. Which, whilst a very real issue, is a term often used too widely and too freely. There are people for instance who believe if you were not born in Egypt you have no business working with Egyptian deities. I disagree with this, it is clear from history the Egyptians were keen to share their ideas. Now the issue is different when it comes to practices that are most certainly closed such as vodou.

If you are drawn to a being or practice that comes from another culture it is my opinion that you should do your research, preferably ask people who belong to the tradition or culture for advice, and make sure you perform it respectfully. Never perform spiritual activities regardless of their origin for purposes of entertainment or if there is no need to do so anyway.

Cultural appropriation is using a culture for entertainment or for profit. People working Ghuede and Leghba and dressing in skull attire parading the streets of a city blowing powders around to look 'spooky' is disrespectful not only to vodou practitioners but also the spirits behind the practice. They will not get far in the practice nor in life. Telling everyone you meet you summon Legba at the crossroads, or Hekate, or the devil and wearing black is not about your spiritual progress, it is about your vanity. It is often cultural appropriation.

It is my view that the spirits and your relationship with them is the only thing that should dictate your journey, however, if you begin to involve other humans in your journey and display such nonsensical actions and disrespectful attitudes to them, they are well within their rights to tell you that you are wrong.

I feel I am not making sense- if you are diving into other cultural practices respect, research, and communication are key. You cannot expect to get anywhere without them. There is a fine line between cultural appreciation and appropriation and sometimes we can all cross that line. It is important to speak to people who have grown up with these rites and traditions to ensure that 1)You are not offending them, 2) you are not offending the spirits and 3) this is a path open and available to you.

Eclecticism is not a problem. Spiritual pick and mix for popularity or 'because it's spooky' most certainly is.

on reviewing

the last trash taste brought up the issue of reviewing media and whether you had to complete it to give a valid review. this got me thinking on a certain asymmetry you’ll always encounter when reviewing nearly anything and which has implications on the question of completion before judging:

it is more likely that something starts out strong and falls off after a while than that something starts bad and pulls out a great finish

conversely, this does not mean that something can’t start out strong and become even better or that something can’t start bad and get even worse

it’s simply the fact that a strong start increases the probability of a strong continuation, because it’s way harder to bumble your way into good writing, technique and execution in the beginning and then losing those skills over the course of a show than it is to find your own pace and get better at execution as time goes on (firings especially in the showbiz notwithstanding).

this is just fundamentally how skills work. you can always have good technique and at some point reach the edge of your competence and this will be interpreted as falling off by your audience because even if your skills made it possible to reach a certain level, it might just not be possible for you to go above this level, even if it might be needed. it seems to be true often enough that if skill level x can get you to a certain point, you might need skill level x+1 to come up with a satisfying resolution to the buildup.

skill curves also usually get progressively harder irl, not just in RPGs. reaching level x+1 is just generally harder than reaching level x.

this implies two things: if your work starts out fairly weak but gets progressively better over time, you likely haven’t reached your skill ceiling yet and so the work might resolve satisfactory.

but if you work starts out weak and it doesn’t get any better over time, it’s just more unlikely the second half will magically be great than that you’ve already reached your current skill ceiling and even if you manage to level up something really bad might only become slightly better.

what does this mean for reviewers, especially casual ones?

the old three episode rule for seasonal anime actually looks like a pretty rational approach. you’ve got an initial and two additional data points as to the quality of a show and its likely trajectory. if it hasn’t managed to hook you (and expecting a better next episode is a hook in itself) by then, dropping it and giving it a bad review is entirely plausible!

as it is more likely that an initially good show falls off than that an initially bad show turns it around, the finishing requirement should be interpreted asymmetrically as well: the best approach is to watch the initially good shows all the way through to check whether they as a whole deserve a good rating, but drop the initially bad shows after a short while and immediately assign them a bad rating overall.

and even if some piece of media manages to perform a miraculous comeback in its latter half your initial rating might still be appropriate because the payout at the end is already substantially diminished by having to slog through the weak beginning. the overall entertainment factor you can derive from a good show with a bad ending will almost always be higher than of a bad show with a good ending, even without taking into account higher incidence of the former vs the latter.

I finally managed to put my finger on one of the reasons I enjoy watching playthroughs of my favorite games, and it's related to a writing tip I learned a couple years ago.

Basically, there's a bunch of things that writers can do to help make a character likable, and one of them is simply to show another character who likes them. Done well, this highlights their good qualities, helps establish their place in the world that we want to be protected, indicates that they've done something to earn the other person's good will, etc.

And here enters Baldur's Gate 3, which is a fantastic game to watch other people play - it's chock full of epic and emotional story beats with loads of great characters, and no two playthroughs are ever the same. There's so much to react to, and so many ways to react. It's great.

This morning, I watched the end of a BG3 playthrough from someone who loved Gale and had his storyline at the forefront of their experience. I've always liked Gale, but in my playthroughs he tends to be overshadowed by some of the other characters, so it was really cool to see how much this person was invested in his story and deliberated about whether to allow him to (no spoilers) go through with one of his plans at the end of the game. After watching it, I kinda like Gale more. No, I do like Gale more. I have a better understanding of why he is the way he is, I recognize more of the subtleties in the writing that grounds him in the world and in the performance that bring him to life, and I'm so glad he's in the game so that people can have that experience.

So, yeah, it's great to hear when people like the same characters you do, but I also want to shout out how great it is to hear people gush about the characters you don't like as much.
