What Foreigners Really Think of The U.S. Right Now

The other night, after the kiddos went to bed, we decided to watch the second Borat movie that just came out (have you seen it?). It was insane and hilarious all at the same time, but it got me wondering: what do folks who don’t live in the U.S. think of The United States of America right now? What is their perception of us?

So I decided to pose this question on Instagram and wow. Y’all did not hold back. I want to thank everyone who submitted for your candidness and honesty, even if some of these were hard to swallow. It’s important to note that just because these are their opinions of America, it doesn’t mean it is all necessarily true. Regardless, it was interesting to read everyone’s thoughts and get an outsider’s perspective.

We received hundreds of submissions and couldn’t post them all, but below, people from all over the world share what they really think of the United States at the moment.

Leadership is out of touch with reality and messing things up real bad, not just for the U.S. but also for the world. What’s worse is that half the country is being misled successfully. It just shows poorly on the country all over. -Annonymous

Your president is a disaster when it comes to foreign politics and corona. No class, no knowledge. A joke. Very scary to watch. But half of the voters are happy with it. And that is even more scary. Very difficult to understand the hate and ignorance in your society right now. -Mikkel

It’s just weird. Everything basically. I totally understand now why the U.S. is described as '“flawed democracy” in the democracy index. It’s just a crazy system which is not providing equality among people- regarding the vote especially. This system leads to the fact of the two big parties (similar in the UK basically). But democracy is about diversity in opinions and options. Not just two. -Max

The US is more divided than ever. The two parties cannot work together nor do they appear to want to. The government is no longer run by reason, facts, and policy aiming for the betterment of the entire country and or world in the long or medium run; rather it’s instant gratification for the few who benefit from nepotism. Lies and misinformation are used to build a dictatorship hiding in the form of “patriotism”. And those who could act as a check or balance focus on their own personal gain, putting their needs above those of the persons they should be representing. -Joel

I personally don’t think there is a very good atmosphere in the USA, especially right now, Trump’s administration does not protect the American people or the economy. He only cares about himself and his male-white supremacy. The worst of all is that lots of Americans think Trump is actually a good leader (idk why, honestly). But thank God that people are starting to wake up and fight about what they believe. We can see it through BLM protests, feminist movements, and so on, and the whole world is proud about those people fighting for their rights. America was once the land of dreams, but nowadays (with all that is happening) it is even scary to go there. Lots of things have to change and those changes have to start, voting and defending your rights and your beliefs are the first step. Greetings from Spain. -Antonio

The main reasons I can think of are vote suppression/gerrymandering, expensive health care wealth inequality, racism, lack of fun control… -Brian

Definitely find the hypocrisy of the Republicans so annoying, Trump still being in office, the fact that there has been no police reform or justice for Breonna Taylor, the gun laws, and the COVID numbers just to name a few. -Brian

Here in the UK it seems like CARNAGE over there..don’t get me wrong, it’s wild here too but Trump is insane and it’s really odd seeing so many Americans supporting him. -Dan

Really worried about the fact that you might go for 4 more years with Trump and the fact that he’ll for sure contest the results if he loses. Add to this, all the racial violence and in particular the way some policemen act without being condemned by any judge. And finally the pandemic which seems to be even more out of control than in other countries. This is coming from someone who lives in France where we’re going to be under lockdown for the second time since the beginning of the pandemic (2nd lockdown starting tomorrow evening and will last at least until December 1st 😢). -Estelle

To put a long story short, let’s just hope Cheeto doesn’t get reelected otherwise our UK trade deal will be a disaster and we don’t need any more negative influences in the UK around gender and sexual equality.-Christian

I think with this administration, the US has demonstrated how to shipwreck a whole nation economically, ideologically, socially, and politically within a really short period of time. After just 4 years, we’ve come to associate the US with widespread narrow-mindedness, a lack of respect and courtesy to other nations (and minorities in its own country for that matter), short sightedness when it comes to global phenomena like environmentalism or migration patterns, and a celebration (by some at least) of almost barbaric notions of violence, oppression, and backward thinking, all under the camouflage of its constitution and socio-historic heritage. We’ve really admired the Obama administration over here in Europe, which-despite its flaws and shortcomings- has opened up the US to international partnerships and has established an ongoing discourse shaped by mutual respect and politeness…the contrast couldn’t be more pronounced these day…-Sebastian

I look at our Prime Minister and government and then see Trump and think we really could have it so much worse! Vote!! -Ant

As an American living in London, I can tell you that the news coverage here makes the US look like an absolute joke. Mainly due to 45, his lies, his bigotry, and his insane desire to make covid seem as though it’s a falsehood “created by the left” while hundreds of thousands of Americans have ben victimized by this pandemic. What was once seen as a country of opportunity and freedom, is sadly no longer held to that level of greatness in comparison to its neighboring countries. It saddens me because I had plans to move back home within the next year or so, but if the US continues on its path, I can see myself in London for the unforeseeable future. I can’t live in a country where I am seen or believed to be lesser than another because of my sexual preference. I can only hope and pray that this election brings the change we need to be that country of greatness once again. -Rob

Very poor to be honest. And I’m not necessarily [talking about Trump]- I think the immediate reaction is to blame him. Though, he is pretty awful. There was obviously a huge level of social and other problems in the US, and the current administration has exploited them to the breaking point. Whereas more “skilled” past administrations had the ability to leverage those issues for their benefit, but not let it boil over. I actually thought Trump would be a positive for the US and world- in that his incompetence would force other world leaders to step up. Meaning more equity in how disputes etc. are assessed and the US wouldn’t bully smaller nations. I think the US has hit the point in its journey with capitalism that the USSR hit with socialism in the late 80’s that led to its collapse. Does that mean collapse for the US, I don’t know but the system isn’t providing equity and equality for all as it stands. -Paul

Worried but also hopeful for you guys because I don’t think all citizens in America reflect the current administration. It’s been really great to see people voting early and making their voice heard. No matter what happens just know you did what you could in this moment in time. Even though the current administration provides a scary outlook for the future. As long as the current and future generations lead with love, there will hopefully be a brighter future. Love from Canada. -Ajetha

I've been subscribing to all of the US News since the Black Lives Matter Movement commenced and honestly, it made me scared as a Filipino Asian to step foot in the States ever since. I have big dreams of flying over there and probably working there as an immigrant after I finished college. However, when I found out about the racial injustice that is currently ongoing in the country, I became hesistant of still wanting to live there. Although, I'm positive that there are still people like you two that will be open about working immigrants, I really hope that racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia will end for good among every human beings in the US and also around the world. I do wish and pray that the 2020 US election will make certain amends to the current situation y'all are experiencing because it's getting pretty scary out there. -Harvey I’m an American living overseas working for the US government. I’m trying my hardest to stay overseas so my family and I don’t have to come back to the mess that is the US right now. From politics to COVID, it’s not a good time. While the virus may be surging again in Europe, at least the people comply with the government rules. Allthough on social policy the US is no real example for us (I think there is more social ‘security’, more justice, high standards in education for all in most of the EU countries), they always have been a ‘safe haven’ in big international politics. It now feels like ‘they have our back’ doesn’t imply anymore. -Jasper

Well personally I think the country seems in total disarray, instead of focusing on the real issues in the streets both house of the capitol are focused on bashing each other during the election campaign which is a circus due to the sitting POTUS. The obsession with the right to bare arms and the gun culture bewilders most other countries, you have teenagers walking into schools with Assault weapons and yet people still want guns to be available, worst still you ban one type of assault rifle but another just as powerful is kept on sale, it’s plain weird. -Philip

Neither candidate represents their party well. As an outsider looking in, it just baffles me that either of these men could potentially be the leader of the free world...It genuinely feels like worrying times are ahead for the US. -Marc I'm from India and living in Germany at the moment. The race problem in the US is as bad as the class/caste problem in India. Even if I don't have money I can go to a government health center in India. I just had an operation and stayed at the hospital for 18 days here in Germany, I had to pay only 180 Euros, everything else ( the operation and the many tests and scans that followed) was covered by the insurance. When my friends at the US heard about it they were shocked about low the hospital bill. There are really great labs (I'm a researcher) that I would like to work but I have no intentions of working/living in the US for a longer period of time. -Maithy

I think the US has become a joke to the rest of the developed world. Neither candidates running for president are fit to run such a powerful country. I can't help but feel after the election if Trump wins the left will riot and if Biden wins the right will riot. The country might just rip itself apart. American politics has zero empathy and zero morals. Honestly its terrifying. -Andrew

The US has always been a bit confusing to me - the two party system, the focus on religion, the divide in income and possibilities- as well as being the beacon of light in the fight for human rights, the strong personal pride in creating caring societets, the blending of and openeses for ethnicities and cultures... But for a while politics have become not at all about politics, religious beliefs are taking charge in policy work, the wealthier part shows little companion towards the less wealthy, the public spending is way above budget year after year while health care seems to be crazy expensive and not for all. The intrusion of US interest in politics in other countries are blunt to say the least, creating conflict where human lives have no value if they’re not US lives... School shootings that seems to be acted upon as that is part of normal lives, and schools to expensive for even middle class kids to study at... This is a shift in trust and soft power that affects all of us. -Olof

To be honest, I couldn’t come to the US right now, it scares me. The leadership, the gun laws, the violence and the divide of the nation. It sucks, because I love America and have been there 7 times in the last two years from Australia for work... but not anymore. I’m not coming back now until peace wins. -Anonymous

The fact that such a hate filled government is presiding over what is one the greatest countries in the world is scary. And it is seriously mind blowing that out of such a powerful country filled with some of the greatest minds in the world it’s these two men are the best you can do to be your next president. I think the orange dude in office is making you guys look bad. But also, good (?). Seeing the black lives matter movement and so many of you stand up to the problems your country faces has been inspiring. One thing our countries have in common is how we are divided into very distinctive opposites sides. I mean, where do all these racists, bigots, utterly, madly conservites people came from? Re. The US atm. Unfortunately your president has made your country a laughing stock around the world and he's destroyed relationships with allies. It's gonna take time to rebuild all of that. He's also moved an entire branch of your government to the far right, even though the majority of the country if left/centr of left. So you've a supreme court that doesn't represent you and it's looking like they're going to try and take away rights from people. You have a healthcare system that doesn't look out for its people and there's this bizarre fear of universal healthcare that seems insane to every other 1st world country. If if Biden wins (and I really hope he does for everyone's sake), there's going to be a lot of work in undoing the damage Trump has done before he can even get into what he wants to do. All the while you've an ultra conservative highest court. There's also the massive political division and the systemic racism. It's a lot. It's not impossible, but it's going to take so much time and people who want it to change. -Ciara

I’ve been sitting here for an hour thinking about your question and there are many different outlooks I could raise so I’ll keep it generic. I’ll start with the elephant in the room known as Covid. Each day, our morning news informs us of what your leaders are doing and daily case numbers in the US. We sit here completely shocked at how your government has let it reach this point. You may have heard that Melbourne has just come out of one of the strictest and longest lock downs in the world. I wouldn’t wish that upon anyone to have to do, but I will say, I feel much more comfortable to be able to go to the shops knowing the numbers are at about 2-3 a day instead of in the thousands. I do think that your government does need to address this now, could even be making it compulsory mask wearing. It’s hard for me to comment about your economy as we don’t here much about it, but I will say Trump ‘says’ make America great again, let’s get more jobs, they are pro life, yet how is someone who is prolife not doing anything to stop a virus that is killing people? Isn’t your unemployment rate worse (pre-covid) than what it was when Obama was president? I think as a generic outlook, if change isn’t made in the election, the outlook from a Australian does not look like it would be something you’d want to be apart of. I love America. Have visited a couple of times, even thought about moving there, but at the moment, I’ve never been more thankful to not be there. -Ben

One of my favorite fandom things is to see the protagonists of other stories as the background characters in fanfic for a completely different story. An example would be, say, the Inuyasha cast as the background ninja manning a border outpost. Not as protagonists in their own rights, but as obviously enough themselves that you can fill out their stories, lol. Do you have any characters you think would be great for that? Even OCs! And how would you need to adapt them to not be protagonists?

I also enjoy that trope! I don’t see it as often as I like? Or, well, I don’t see it often as more than just “I needed five names and I might as well use these names” as opposed to a more integrated “these five characters would work well in this universe, here’s a little easter egg for my readers”

I do something similar in Naruto/DoS fic… maybe not “protagonists” of other stories but definitely would-have-been secondary characters in other stories are still around.

For example, the teammates of my other Naruto fic. In Counterpoise it’s Ringo Nohara and Zakuro Yuuhi who graduated two years before the Rookie Nine and then in Externality it’s Komadori Ouba who graduated the same year as Team Gai. And then, I guess, arguably Kiyoshi Utsugi who is the main character in (In)Difference and possibly Kakashi’s mom?

All three of them are alternate universes but the first two–Counterpoise and Externality, that is–are alternate universes in a different way from (In)Difference. Because Counterpoise and Externality are “what if X character existed and were relevant to Naruto/Naruto’s story” ie Konran, Naruto’s twin sister or Tetsuki who helps Naruto graduate a year early and thus becomes his genin teammate.

Whereas (In)Difference is an AU of “what if Kakashi’s mom was an SI!OC/had knowledge of canon” even though, when I was first building her I didn’t make her with being Kakashi’s mom in mind. I made her to be a kunoichi of an age with the Sannin and then had to figure out what would make a good teammate for Dan Katou (aka Tsunade’s boyfriend) and That One Guy who was on the same mission as when Dan died and who ACTUALLY HAD A NAME? aka Kunugi Mokume. So, like… with those two in mind, who would make a good teammate abilities-wise and then… it just kind of… grew into well, I guess she’s Kakashi’s mom.

I’m getting off track. So… even through (In)Difference is an AU, Kakashi obviously still exists so his mom must still exist so I just generally use “Kiyoshi Utsugi” as his mom whether or not it’s the (In)Difference version who has canon knowledge or not. But in Counterpoise and Externality, that’s the only instance in which Konran Uzumaki and Tetsuki Kaiza exist [in the Naruto world]. But their would-have-been-teammates still exist without them, so I use them pretty frequently as like. “Oh, I need a character who’s approximately this age and would be in the RnD department. Let’s use Komadori” Or “Hey, this person is going to the hospital but it’s not a major injury so they’d have a baby medic look at it, here’s Ringo.”

I actually designed Ringo and Zakuro to be the “those two guys” for the Konoha Twelve? Like, not part of the group, obviously, but a background sort of… like Izumo and Kotetsu?

So, I guess, the how do I do it for these characters is more of a… well… I took away their genin teammate so they didn’t pass their assigned jounin-sensei’s test so they went into Genin Corps/Medic Corps/had an apprenticeship or whatever… which I guess is kind of bleak.

Um…

I also had a fairly recent almost-use of this concept. In more of a fleeting daydream-y than a full brainstorm-y way and it had more to do with a reaction to a BnHA fanfic I read that then spun wildly out of control…

Strikes But Does Not Roar

Izuku never gets One For All. He doesn’t go to UA. He doesn’t become a Hero.

But heroism isn’t just for the professionals. Neither is happiness or Family.

It’s a vigilante!Izuku, basically. But, specifically, a KHR!vigilante!Izuku.

I’m talking a reverse Tetsuki Kaiza ‘verse!

Just kidding, knowledge of Tetsuki Kaiza is not needed (ALTHOUGH)

The idea actually came to me as a weird knee-jerk response to bakudeku fic Just Like The Comics by brichibi which I do recommend if you A) like bakudeku fic, B) like AUs, and C) like screaming at your screen when fictional characters are having mutual pining romantic drama but also legitimate relationship issues and not just RomCom-esque misunderstandings

It’s a very complex set of feelings.

And without getting too much into spoiler territory, there was a lot of discussion of Achieving Your Dream versus Being Happy and because I still have conflicting feelings about the bakudeku ship, part of me was like… okay, but what if an AU of this fic in which Izuku decided, well, just because I can’t be a hero doesn’t mean I can’t help people still in the most dangerous way possible.

And then I also thought, a little bit, how… not funny… but a greater slap in the face to Bakugou if Izuku started dating someone who, on the surface, was very much like him but on the surface a worse version. Like, on paper that is. Because Bakugou is probably very handsome, if he weren’t always so >:(, and very smart and successful and devoted to being a hero. Great, fantastic, Bakugou will probably achieve his dream of being the number one hero with or without Izuku.

But will he be happy?

Versus, Izuku in this AU will never achieve his dream. Has, actually, given up on his dream or, at least, the original version of his dream. But he can still help people. And if he happens to find happiness with a loud, pale-haired, bright eyed, muscular vigilante whose punches can kind of explode things then… well… Ryohei Sasagawa is not the smartest of dudes, but he is a good sunshine boy who I and Tetsuki love very much.

So this AU takes the brichibi’s theme of Achieving Your Dream vs Being Happy and twists it into an unhappy ending (for Bakugou, at least) because instead of both of them getting both, each of them only get one.

Well, that’s the origin of the AU, but it kinda took a life of its own when I decided to use KHR characters and this is where this weird fake fic summary finally becomes relevant to your ask, lionheadbookends, because it wasn’t just the idea of Ryohei vaguely looking like Bakugou and rubbing salt in a broken up bakudeku’s wound. It also wasn’t even the fact that IZUKU IS COVERED IN GREEN LIGHTNING WHENEVER HE USES OFA. It also also wasn’t even the whole “Vongola started off as a vigilante group” thing, though all of these did help, of course.

But the cold, brutal thought that in this world of quirks–where Izuku’s misery comes from being quirkless–that another boy who had been so bullied and ridiculed and given a cruel nickname would also be quirkless… and still, eventually, find happiness despite it. That’s right, I’m talking about Dame-Tsuna.

And, okay, I suppose I have to decided whether or not Dying Will Flames exist. I do know they are independent of quirks if they do exist. And while I would love to stick with the theme of “you don’t need powers to be a hero” I have no idea how Tsuna’s Guardians would have formed around him (specifically, Gokudera, Mukuro, and Lambo… although as an Actual Child, he will not be holding the Guardian title… if they even do still structure themselves that way)

Anyway, Tsuna is quirkless as well and all of his “Guardians” have weak quirks or quirks that aren’t applicable to being a hero but they still go out and be vigilantes anyway. Like, for example, Ryohei probably has a minor healing quirk. He did not want to be a doctor. But he likes helping people, even if its not through his quirk, and he wasn’t going to not help people just because his quirk didn’t match up to his methods. (Kyoko also has a minor healing quirk, and while she did go into the medical field she decided to be a NEUROSURGEON where her quirk isn’t exactly useless but doesn’t really apply during the main part of CUTTING PEOPLE’S BRAINS).

And Izuku probably falls into this group because he, I dunno, decides to take some self defense classes finally and Ryohei’s either the teacher or an assistant or something and that’s their meet cute but really it’s the introduction to Izuku being like… the friendly boy who I maybe like has way more bruises on his face than class sparring explains? WTF? He’s going out at night and fighting crime illegally with a bunch of his friends? (With or without Dying Will Flames) and then Izuku is just like… I WANT IN.

Anyway, because this is from Izuku’s POV, it does make the KHR squad into the non-protagonists. Not necessarily “background” characters, but secondary characters for sure. Although if we focus on the unrequited bakudeku aspect of it, then the vigilantism does become the “background” for the “childhood friends and former high school sweethearts dichotomy drama of Achieving Your Dream vs Being Happy…”

Tetsuki might exist here but definitely as a background character. She does a lot of undercover stuff as in canon for Trailblazers

Happy 32nd Birthday Nobuhiko Okamoto!

Personal Note:

I’ve been preparing for a while because I wanted to make this with a lot more thought. Sorry for the length of this post. I spent quite a bit of time on it, but I didn’t realize it would get so long! He is one of my top favourite voice actors (both English and Japanese) ever. To me, he’s a relatable, awesome, and passionate inspiration. He puts his all into every role he does, and he never gives up no matter who tells him to.

I could probably go on about how much I like many of the roles he’s done, but that would be a whole other essay in itself. I even considered watching Corpse Party (the scaredy cat I am) because I heard he was in it. Yeah, I’m one of those people who gets drawn to anime when I figure out certain studios and voice actors are attached to it. I have watched a few episodes of some really bad anime because I heard he was in it. No regrets! Okay, maybe I have a few... I still haven’t watched them all though! I plan on watching a ton more, and that includes a few bad apples here and there.

Despite all the hurdles and adversity he faces, he overcomes it! He has had so many amazing roles, he sings, he’s good at shogi, and he’s just a good person. I respect him a lot. Honestly, I can’t word stuff too well, but I sincerely hope he continues working, maybe gets married and has kids (since he said he wanted to), and experiences all the happiness he deserves.

Mikoto Mikoshiba - Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun

[This character made me laugh so much. He and Seo are my favourites. I haven’t seen another amazing anime with both Miyuki Sawashiro and Nobu. They’re my two favourites. I hope to see them acting together eventually (even if Mikorin and Seo never really communicated). Thanks to Nobu, we have a voice to this madly embarassed bishounen. Katsuki “Kacchan” Bakugou - Boku no Hero Academia

[Bakugou might not always be my cup of tea as a character, but his voice made me like him somewhat anyway whether he’s an asshole or not. There are a few scenes in season three that hit me with mad feels,, but even during season one and two, Nobu aced this role. This role is what shot him up to one of my favourite voice actors. Karma Akabane - Assassination Classroom

[While Bakugou is one type of crazy, Karma is another. Honestly, he’s such a sly, cunning, and mischievous character, but that’s what we all like about him, right?]

This is my first time transcribing a song and arranging it! I improvised and made up some stuff (mostly guitar solos that just didn’t fit as well logically on piano). I usually don’t like (actually, I kinda hate) transcribing because it’s basically like trying to copy down a book that someone reads aloud (and you can’t look at the text). But it was worth doing this! He’s definitely not my favourite singer, but I’d still listen to him.

I didn't want to go with an original score for this one because I felt like I wanted to improve a lot more as a composer and artist (as if I'm qualified enough to be called those terms). When I make one for him, I want to go all out.

Spooky Special

So, I know that there’s already a Youtuber au but I was thinking about Dan and Phil’s Spooky Week and Sprace in their place. Basically, this is one big ‘Phan Proof’ video in a story because I needed to watch a bunch of videos of things that viewers would see and claim is proof of a relationship, even though I don’t ship it.

This is the first of my Halloween fics! The second is going to be coming out in real time EST over the next few days so look out for that!

Race finished setting the camera up above the desk as Spot came in with a beer and a Fruit Shoot. Race, ever the five-year-old at heart, always argued that Fruit Shoot was superior to any other kind of drink made for adults. Their viewers were always baffled by his childishness whenever he forgot to edit out when he took a drink.

He took the purple bottle from Spot, watching him drop into his chair and spin around casually with his drink, watching his boyfriend lazily before pulling himself into the desk and pulling the game up on the screen.

They were gaming YouTubers. They usually played cutesy, casual games (definitely not because Race couldn’t handle jump-scares) but it was Halloween soon and they had to make some kind of themed video. It had become a thing over the three years of their channel, only growing in anticipation every year. Their viewers knew that, on Halloween, they posted a forty minute Spooky Special. Forty minutes of Race jumping out of his skin and clinging to Spot as though his life depended on it.

Every year, about fifty different ‘Sprace’ compilations filled their recommended afterwards as every moment of those 2,400 seconds was poured over and analysed and turned into some kind of proof that they were, secretly, together.

At first, it had made Race laugh. Spot had been a little uncomfortable but he accepted it, ignoring the comments and acting the same as ever. When it started getting worse, however, neither were particularly okay with it. Fans started invading their privacy, asking lewd questions and bringing it up when they met them in person.

A whole year went by when Spot and Race barely touched. They hardly even looked at each other in their videos and they sat a whole foot apart at their desk, desperate to deter the comments about their supposed relationship. Race tried to stop them, he even made a Tumblr post saying that it was uncomfortable and that he didn’t approve but it took a whole year of barely any physical contact for the shippers to stop.

It had been torture for Race. He knew that it hadn’t exactly been pleasant for Spot either but he didn’t mind too much. For Race, though, who was completely infatuated with his best friend, having to act completely platonic for a whole year almost drove him insane. He hadn’t been able to talk to Spot because then he would know but he’d spent many a night ranting to Jojo as he helped him film his weird but creative short films.

The other night, however, Spot had sat down and told Race that he was sick of hiding. They were both very tactile friends and he knew that Race didn’t like it either. They just decided to forget this pathetic attempt at deterrence and decided to be themselves because they’d started that channel to have fun. Neither of them were having fun.

“Ready?” Spot grinned as he took a swig of his beer, setting it down just outside of the frame. It may have been the Spooky Special but Race was adamant about putting up a ‘wholesome’ and ‘please-don’t-demonetise-us’ front.

Race nodded and dropped down beside him, pulling his notebook over to him with the script that he had, ready for the intro, “First Spooky Special since the stalemate was broken.” He chuckled, resting his Fruit Shoot between his teeth as he flipped pages, finding what he had already written up and pointing out Spot’s lines to him.

As he read through them quickly, Spot nodded. Their videos weren’t scripted, they just wanted a coherent intro as they usually just devolved into tickling and chaos without words to follow. He chuckled at Race, reaching across and pushing at him playfully as he teased him for what had happened the year before, “Gonna scream and grab me again instead of falling out of your chair?”

Shrugging, Race ignored Spot’s taunt and refused to rise to it. He gave a simple, “perhaps,” in reply but settled on just elbowing him casually as he quickly checked to make sure that the mic was on.

Holding up his fingers to count down from three, Race quickly made sure that Spot was ready before chiming together, “Hey Newsies!”

When they’d started their channel, Race and Spot did the local paper round for extra money. When they’d gathered a small fanbase, they did a live show where Race was wearing the newsie cap he’d bought as a joke when they started the paper round and Spot had continuously made jokes about it. Their fans had adopted the word and it had stuck, even being used for the fans of some of their friends who had done paper rounds with them, like Jack (aplaceisee), Jojo (yeahright) and Davey (goandlookitup).

“Wait, Race, you’ve got an eyelash.” Spot paused quickly, reaching over and brushing the small hair away from Race’s eye gingerly, turning his hand over to make sure he’d got it before blowing it away.

Race laughed, jokingly plucking at Spot’s eyelashes as he rolled his eyes, “Excuse us whilst we just groom each other like bloody primates.” He grinned, pushing at Spot as he rubbed almost nervously at his eyes himself. Race did trust that Spot had got the eyelash but they’d barely touched in a video in so long and Race just needed a moment, “Onto the question of the video!”

Since they’d had enough viewers to do it, Race and Spot had answered one weird fan question they received on Twitter in every video, giving infuriatingly vague answers if they ever picked anything serious.

Spot looked over Race’s shoulder at the question he’d written down, glancing almost nervously at the camera as he chuckled, “You sure about this one?” He looked to Race, shrugging as the smaller boy nodded and held his hand up for a second to make it easier for when Race was editing, “Is Race’s hair a wig?”

Reaching across to tug at Race’s sandy curls gently, Spot laughed as Race let out a whined, “owww!” and grabbed at Spot’s hand to push it away. He forgot to let go of Spot’s hand for a moment as he rubbed at his sore scalp, merely holding the other boy’s hand up and away from his head before reaching across to pull at Spot’s thick hair.

“Apparently not!” Eventually managing to prise his hand away from Race’s grip, Spot laughed as Race could tell he was struggling not to show discomfort on camera. He let go quickly, not wanting to make Spot uncomfortable and just flashing him a smile instead.

Race grinned, biting his lip to stop it as he looked nervously down at his notebook and began to introduce the game, “So, it’s the annual Spooky Special and today we are playing-! … Some stupid horror game that I don’t remember the name of … “ Scanning the screen quickly, Race found the name before handing over for Spot to explain exactly what they were playing and exactly what they had to do.

Zoning out slightly as Spot described the game, Race started thinking about all of the backlash they’d probably get from this video. He didn’t want it to become awkward between them again like it had been before but, sometimes, he couldn’t help but feel that maybe Spot, deep down, felt the same way that he did. He couldn’t take the awkward sexual tension that he felt sometimes but, what was worse was knowing that he was probably making it all up in his head.

After turning the lights down for the atmosphere, they started the game and Race grounded himself once again to focus on the lilting voice of the narrator, explaining that they had to be quiet as he made eye contact with Spot. There was a moment, where Race forgot that they were filming and thought he saw Spot’s eyes flicker down to his lips. He quickly looked nervously to the camera, realising that, if he’d been right, they couldn’t play the voiceover again and couldn’t edit that out. Making awkward eye contact with Spot for a moment as the shorter boy smirked at him, Race decided to ignore it and struggled to focus on what was being said.

The game continued on and Race jumped at near enough everything, whether it was meant to be a jump-scare or not. He turned quickly to look at something that he thought he’d seen moving in the room behind them, mumbling as he turned back around, “Sorry. Just a bit jumpy-“

A scream rang from Race’s lips and he went to swing as Spot jumped at him, spooking him and laughing as he fell backwards and would have tumbled from his chair if Spot hadn’t caught him, “You bi-!” Stopping himself just before he could swear, Race remembered that they were filming and was quick to censor himself. He refused to swear on camera and you could always tell when he edited the videos as opposed to when Spot did as he always beeped every profane word that Spot slung around.

“You went to hit me!” Spot’s wild laughter only grew as Race flung his arms at him jokingly to bat at him with the sides of his fists.

Falling still, Race pouted slightly as he stared at Spot with narrowed eyes, “I hate you.” After a few more moments, he finally broke and fell into the joking hug that Spot was offering, “My best friend is a bully.” Rolling his eyes at the camera, Race laughed, trying to pull away with disgust as Spot tried to kiss his cheek, having to hide just how much he wanted to lean into it.

During the next cutscene, Race narrowed his eyes as Spot reached across the desk for the pen pot and shook his head slightly as he picked out the small rubbers that they had in the shape of ducks, knowing what was coming next.

He stared into the camera, eyes going dead, as Spot began to throw the tiny rubbers at his face, trying his best not to flinch or laugh but failing every time and, instead, collecting a handful of them to retaliate with. Race launched them at Spot’s face, laughing as he dodged them all but stopping to cradle his face when one of Spot’s hit him directly in the eye.

“Oh, shit, Race! You okay?” Dropping his rubbers and reaching forward to take Race’s face, the game on the screen was ignored as he tried to prise Race’s hands away, “Come on, let me see … Ouch. Yeah, okay, you can slap me in the face.” When Race eventually pulled his hands away, he blinked a few times before looking in the monitor to see that his eye was red and slightly bloodshot.

Rolling his eyes, Race looked to Spot, knowing that he was probably joking so deciding to go along with it, “Really?” He absentmindedly collected the tiny ducks on the keyboard in front of him, sweeping them away before looking back at Spot.

He nodded quickly, presenting the right side of his face and gesturing for Race to hit him with his left arm, “Yeah, go on, do it. Go on, Race.” Spot’s words became quick and almost flustered as Race recognised that he was tensing his muscles and steeling himself, as if Race was about to hit him hard enough to knock him clean out of the chair. Sure, Race liked to scrap and fight occasionally but his branding™ was the innocent one.

“I don’t wanna do it!” Testing the swing a little, Race made a show of being uncertain, actually realising that he really didn’t want to hurt Spot, even after he’d launched a rubber into his eyeball. He scrunched his nose up, closing his eyes and trying not to think about what he was about to do.

Spot’s laugh almost stopped him, the laugh and the teasing, “Go on, do it, do it, do it,” that left him at about a mile a minute. Race steeled himself, knowing that he was going to need it before going for it. The sound was pitiful as Race’s slap barely touched Spot, making the tougher boy laugh and grab at Race’s hands. He jokingly rubbed at his cheek as Race pouted.

Chuckling, Spot set Race’s hands down as he started teasingly practising his swing in the same way that Race had, “Okay, now let me do it to you!” He reached forwards as soon as he noticed Race backing away, holding him in place with a grin.

“Nooo!” Race tried to pull back, laughing but eventually falling still when Spot wouldn’t give up. He tensed his face, scrunching up every feature as he waited. At the very last second, however, Race darted backwards. It was only by a millimetre or so but it was enough for him to miss Spot’s terrible pathetic swipe at his cheek.

Spot laughed as he shook his head at Race, “Well that was one attractive face you pulled. Couldn’t even sit through one little baby slap.” He chuckled, turning back to the game when he realised that the cutscene had ended long ago.

When a puzzle round came up, Race felt like there was finally an aspect to this game that he could be helpful with. He ranted to Spot about being fair and letting him have a turn, trying not to blush as Spot just stared at him, terribly close to his face. He thought he saw his eyes flicker down to his lips before coming back up again but Race put it down to a trick of the light.

He had almost made it through the level when he felt the urge to sneeze, deciding that he had enough time to make the final click beforehand, Race went for it. However, he’d misjudged himself as just as he was about to press the correct button, he sneezed. The mouse careened towards the other corner of the screen and settled on one of the buttons that would kill them. Race’s finger came down and, before he could stop himself, he’d clicked on it and they lost their penultimate life.

An exhausted roar came from Spot as he noticed what Race had done, swiping the mouse away and reaching out to wrap his fingers loosely around Race’s neck. They’d been playing the game for thirty minutes and if they lost because of Race’s arrogance in his ability to hold a sneeze, Race knew that Spot would probably lost it.

Reaching up to grab at his hand to hold him back, Race laughed as Spot shook him around lightly and gritted his teeth in frustration, eventually managing to push Spot’s arms away slightly, “Stop touching me!”

Spot scoffed, narrowing his eyes at Race with the usual sparkle of mischief as he stroked a hand down his face, “I’ll touch you when I please.” Although it was a weird joke that most of their audience would take as ‘proof,’ Race knew why Spot had said it. This was the end of the sitting on opposite sides of the frame in videos, it was the end of never appearing in one another’s live shows. Race and Spot were going to be just as close as they wanted to be, regardless of what anyone said about their supposed relationship, no matter how much Race wanted it to exist.

Writing Villains

*Give them a motive*

Are you getting tired of hearing this point? Same, but it's still relevant. Arguably, villains carry the plot of every fictional work ever, whether that be a movie, book, play, whatever. What’s a hero without a villain? In the same way, what's a villain without a motivation to oppose the hero? No one puts in the amount of effort villains do just for funsies. Your hero has to have really pissed them off to merit an entire book’s worth of counterattacks. So give your villain a solid motive. This can‘t just be a rough childhood. What does “rough childhood” mean to them? Single parent? Bullying? When you figure out your villain’s motive, it becomes significantly easier to figure out the kinds of attacks they’ll send the hero’s way and also their weakness(es). *I got a post-in-progress that’ll go in-depth with Villainous Motives so eyes open for that.*

*Provide/plot a correlating backstory*

This is technically adding on to the previous point, but it's a lot to explain so: Your villain’s backstory/motive needs to directly or indirectly impact their course of action throughout your story. It's a simple case of ‘cause and effect.’ And you need to be thoughtful about how you get it done. For example: our hypothetical villain (we’ll call him Dan for no specific reason) has experienced a very privileged childhood under the care of very wealthy parents. Dan grew up to inherit their parent’s expansive business and continued their streak of wealthy living. Down the road, a new business starts to grow rapidly and completely overpowers the first, reducing all of Dan’s status, wealth, and honor to dust. This would, of course, infuriate him, since growing up as the pampered kid he was would make it so he’d never experienced a situation where he didn’t get what he wanted. And thus begins Dan’s spiral into villainy, and it doesn‘t have to be all black capes and evil chuckles. In this particular case, it's a battle to be on top of the business food chain. And when you’re trying to be a successful businessman, you can't go around blowing crap up and killing people, so this story would entail a lot more charismatic and thought-provoking moves on the villains part. With this example, I’ve connected all the dots from Dan’s childhood to his present-day goal. All of the decisions Dan will make to counter the hero in this story will inevitably be for the good of his status and company, and that narrows down the conflict of the plot significantly. This makes it so the plot isn't all over the place, and in my opinion, makes the story a lot easier to write. It helps to point out that, like this one, not all villain backstories need to include a tragic childhood. I’d like to say that the villain’s backstory should be plotted before the actual story, but I know us writer folk are just itching to dive into our writing. So that's an unrealistic expectation to set. However, make it so that it seems the backstory was plotted first. Connect all your points and connect them well. It's all just cause and effect.

*Give them a weakness(es)*

Doesn’t it just tickle you when you read a villain that has a soft spot? I’m not saying that all villains should have a soft spot for a weakness. But all villains should have some form of a shortcoming, and even better if they have more than one. If a villain is deemed all-powerful and undefeated, they’d be just that: all-powerful and undefeated, and your hero would be no exception. A shortcoming here or there would leave a brief opening for the hero to slip past their defenses and “win.” Maybe your villain is an iron-clad warrior that slayed ten-thousand men at some point in their life. Well, their weakness could be that they lack battle strategy and rely solely on brute force. This would inevitably end up a weakness if they were ever outnumbered in a situation. It’s also very important to ensure that your villain’s weakness (or any character’s weakness) does not clash with their strengths. For example, a character can't have a weakness of recklessness and still be a supreme strategist. You must build strengths and weaknesses off of one another, kind of like checks and balances.

*Make them pleasant, charming, cunning, or charismatic*

Readers will always like a clever villain. I don't know the science behind it; it’s more engaging and entertaining to read. There’s just something about a cunning and calculating villain that keeps me reading a book to the very last page. Sure, these kinds of villains are easy to screw up and harder to write. But hey, writing is hard. Either get over it or get get over writing. The most I can say for this is to practice writing scheming villains and to read books with clever villains. A few examples of cunning characters would be Aelin from “Throne of Glass” or Kaz from “Six of Crows.” These guys aren’t actually villains but the authors of both books depicted a cunning personality for them by keeping the audience in the dark about their schemes. It keeps the readers guessing what's going to happen up until the big reveal, and then they’re left thinking “damn, that’s smart.”

*Avoid the cartoon villain*

This is just a bonus point to avoid when writing your villain(s) - What I mean by a “cartoon villain” is basically all the villainous cliches incarnate. A few examples of these cliches are the typical evil chuckle, wearing black clothes all the time, using cheesy dialogues like “I will destroy you, foolish mortal!” Basically filter out all the stuff cartoons and TV shows have showed you up until now. And my personal pet peeve with this cliche is the excruciating “villain speech” that takes takes place in the climax. The villain basically corners the hero, and then instead of ending them right then and there, they go on to spill out their entire life story, all the scheming that had led up to this moment, and how they’re going to “destroy you and everything you love.” Soooo can we move on to the destroying part now? Please? This lengthy speech occurs more times in book than you might realize, and it basically takes the tension levels from 100 to 0 real quick. The climax is what the readers read the whole damn book for, and you just obliterated all the tension. You best believe they will be pissed.

Nobuhiko Okamoto - Compilation Post (kind of)

This all started when I started considering watching Sangatsu no Lion again, and since I was on the topic of one of my favourite voice actors (who is known for playing shogi), I decided to dig a little deeper. I wanted to share my findings here. I will list sources, and I will share the highlights of what I found.
