Story at-a-glance
Mercola.com has been labeled a national security threat by British and American intelligence agencies that are collaborating to eliminate “anti-vaccine propaganda” from public discussion using sophisticated cyberwarfare tools
Imran Ahmed, chief executive of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), has made statements implying that people who question the safety and necessity of a COVID-19 vaccine might be prone to violent extremism — a defamatory statement that has no basis in reality
In a December 22, 2020, Twitter post, the CCDH states that “Anti-vaxxers have been meeting secretly to plan how to stop the COVID vaccine.” According to The Washington Post, the CCDH report quotes “leaked audio” from this supposedly “secret” meeting
However, audio was not “leaked,” as it came from presentations given at the Fifth International Public Conference on Vaccination, held online October 16 through 18, 2020 that was in no way "private" or held in secret. It was open to the public just like the previous four conferences on vaccination that NVIC has sponsored beginning in 1997
Censorship is anathema to a democratically run, free and open society. While there may not be a benefit to allowing misinformation to be disseminated, the risks of censoring are simply too grave to be justifiable
As detailed in "Spy Agencies Threaten to 'Take Out' Mercola," this website has been labeled a national security threat by British and American intelligence agencies that are collaborating to eliminate "anti-vaccine propaganda" from public discussion using sophisticated cyberwarfare tools.1,2,3
In a December 22, 2020, article,4 The Hill claims the "anti-vaccination movement sees COVID-19 as an opportunity" to strengthen its position, stating that "As public health officials seek to reassure Americans on the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine, anti-vaccine efforts could prevent the country from reaching herd immunity."
According to a November 9, 2020, report in The Times,5 the British "government regards tackling false information about COVID-19 vaccination as a rising priority," ostensibly for the same reason. But does concern for implementation of public health policy really justify the use of cyberwarfare against those who raise questions about vaccine safety?
Wouldn't vaccine safety be part and parcel of a successful public health campaign? Doesn't public trust play a significant part as well? The fact that they're trying to shut down any and all conversations about vaccines — using warfare tactics no less — suggests that the planned mass vaccination campaign has very little to do with keeping the public healthy and safe. It's about controlling the public, for some undisclosed purpose.
'Anti-Hate' Group Defames Vaccine Safety Advocates
In July 2020, Imran Ahmed, a member of the Steering Committee on Countering Extremism Pilot Task Force under the British government's Commission for Countering Extremism and the chief executive of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), told The Independent6 he considers anti-vaxxers "an extremist group that pose a national security risk," because "once someone has been exposed to one type of conspiracy it's easy to lead them down a path where they embrace more radical world views that can lead to violent extremism."
In other words, Ahmed implies that people who question the safety and necessity of a COVID-19 vaccine might be prone to violent extremism — a defamatory statement that has no basis in reality.
In its report, "The Anti-Vaxx Playbook,"7 CCDH identifies six leading online "anti-vaxxers" — Barbara Loe Fisher, Joseph Mercola, Del Bigtree, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Sherri Tenpenny and Andrew Wakefield — and outlined an alleged anti-vaxxer "plan to attack a forthcoming COVID vaccine" based on remarks made by speakers during the Fifth International Public Conference on Vaccination, sponsored by the non-profit, Nacional Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) and held online October 16 through 18, 2020.
According to The Washington Post,8 the report quotes "leaked audio" from the conference. Similarly, in a December 22, 2020, Twitter post,9 the CCDH states that "Anti-vaxxers have been meeting secretly to plan how to stop the COVID vaccine. We were there. Today we're exposing their playbook."
It's rather laughable. Just who is the conspiracy theorist here? There was no audio to be "leaked" since it was a PUBLIC conference, open to absolutely anyone and everyone, just like the previous four conferences on vaccination that NVIC has held beginning in 1997. It was openly promoted by NVIC, this website, as well as many other groups and was about as far from a "secret meeting" as you could possibly get.
Since the CCDH admitted "being there," they must have paid the nominal registration attendance fee of $80, as did more than 3,000 other registered attendees from the U.S, Canada, Europe, Asia and Africa. The NVIC conference, which was originally scheduled to be held in a hotel, was produced online for the first time after COVID-19 social distancing and travel restrictions were instituted in March, 2020.
Vaccine Concerns Are Growing Rapidly
The CCDH report also lists several private Facebook groups dedicated to vaccine information, including "Vaccination Re-Education Discussion Forum," "Stop Mandatory Vaccination," "Vaccine Choices" and "Restore Liability for the Vaccine Makers."
CCDH admits tracking and spying on 425 vaccine-related Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter accounts. In all, these accounts have 59.2 million followers, "nearly 877,000 more than they had in June," CCDH notes, adding that:10
"This means that anti-vaxxers grew fast enough to outpace the removal of accounts belonging to influential figures such as Del Bigtree, Larry Cook and David Icke in that period. Those removals led to a loss of 3.2 million followers from the total, while other anti-vaxxers in our sample gained over 4.1 million …
Analysis of this year-long growth also shows the substantial contributions that alternative health entrepreneurs and conspiracy theorists make to the reach of the anti-vaccine movement.
Entrepreneurs now have 22.6 million followers, supplying two-fifths of the anti-vaccine movement's online following. Anti-vaccine conspiracy accounts grew by nearly 50 percent over the year, starting at 15.5 million followers in 2019 and rising to 23.1 million by December 2020."
According to the CCDH, "Anti-vaxxers have developed a sophisticated playbook for spreading uncertainty about a COVID vaccine."11 To counter this information, medical and scientific professionals need to "take action," by which the CCDH means they must push for COVID-19 vaccination.
"To do so, they must convince the public that COVID is dangerous and give them confidence that a vaccine is safe and effective," the CCDH writes,12 adding that anti-vaxxers "win the debate by default if a skeptical public fail to take action and use the vaccine."
'Anti-Vaxx Playbook'
Just what is the "anti-vaxx playbook"? According to the CCDH, the "playbook for spreading uncertainty" about the vaccine involves five key steps:13
Establishing "a 'master narrative' comprising three key messages: COVID is not dangerous, the vaccine is dangerous and vaccine advocates cannot be trusted"
Adapting that master narrative for "online subcultures" such as "Alternative health entrepreneurs, conspiracy theorists, and accounts directed at parents or ethnic communities"
Offering "online answering spaces where people with doubts about COVID or the vaccine can direct their questions"
Converting vaccine-hesitant individuals into anti-vaxxers and then training them to become "more effective activists"
Mitigating attacks on their online infrastructure by migrating followers to "alt-tech" platforms such as Telegram and Parler and developing "techniques for undermining fact-checking"
In the report, the CCDH details many of the specific messages shared by me and others, such as deaths being falsely attributed to COVID-19, thereby artificially inflating mortality statistics, the fact that COVID-19 has a 99+% survival rate unless you're very old and have underlying comorbidities, and the fact that there are now several effective therapeutics for COVID-19, making a vaccine less relevant.
"Anti-vaxxers take advantage of existing media and political narratives around the speed of vaccine development to claim trials have been rushed, and that it is too soon to know if COVID vaccines are safe," the CCDH states. "Variations of this narrative highlight perceived shortcomings in clinical trials, and draw on past examples of vaccines with adverse effects."
Zero Solid Counterarguments Made
Reading through the CCDH's report, I'm struck by the irony that none of the so-called "anti-vaxx arguments" are actually met by solid pro-vaccine counterarguments or data.
CCDH does not negate or even debate the accuracy of any of them. It just brushes them aside as misinformation and lies without providing any proof whatsoever. In fact, the report summarizes our concerns so well that I'd encourage everyone to read it.
At the end of the report, they do list a number of strategies that pro-vaccine advocates should use to counter anti-vaccine messages, but again, nowhere do they recommend leaning on published science.
Instead, it's all about shaming people who question vaccines as "conspiracy theorists," promoting harrowing stories of people who got sick with COVID-19 and "shouting about getting vaccinated."
"Recipients of the vaccine should post about getting it — such a campaign could create authentic social proof and work against the anti-vaxxers' aim of creating doubt around the safety of vaccines. 'I've had the vaccine' Twibbons and Instagram filters could also help achieve this," CCDH writes.14
CCDH Promotes Draconian Censorship
Other recommendations issued by the CCDH include deplatforming anyone who questions vaccines. "Deplatforming works," they say, adding that:15
"The problem lies with a very small number of accounts. The 59 million followers of anti-vaxxer social media accounts identified in this report are following just 425 accounts, pages, groups and channels across Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
The 10 anti-vaxxers we track with the largest cross-platform followings make up the majority of the total audience for anti-vaxxers online. These are the 'superspreaders' of anti-vaxx misinformation.
As this report has demonstrated, anti-vaxxers are concerned by the prospect of losing their privileged position on social media platforms … the evidence is clear that the best way of preventing someone falling for a conspiracy theory is to prevent them from seeing it in the first place."
The CCDH also urges legislators to "hold platforms accountable" through fines and criminal sanctions, legal liability for forum administrators and/or "transparency for the online advertising world" — in other words, warn advertisers that the platform they're supporting with their advertising dollars is promoting "medical misinformation" and "anti-vaccine conspiracy theories."
I am surprised by their recommendation because to the best I can discern, ALL the major media platforms have already censored every major site that questions vaccines many months ago. They cannot censor them any more than they already are. Most of the YouTube, Facebook and Twitter accounts have been heavily censored or deplatformed.
Greenwald on Big Tech Censoring
In the video at the top of this article, UnHerd interviews Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Glenn Greenwald, who is one of my favorite articulate journalists. At the end of October 2020, Greenwald resigned from The Intercept — a publication he co-founded in 2014 — after the publication refused to publish an article in which he raised a critique against presidential candidate Joe Biden.16
According to Greenwald, the refusal to publish the piece violated his "contractual right of editorial freedom." In the interview, he stresses the dangers inherent with online censorship by big tech and social media platforms. Who should be in control of "the truth"? Can anyone really be designated as the ultimate source of truth, be it about vaccines or anything else?
What looks like a proven orthodoxy one month becomes a gross error the next, and that's exactly why things have to be debated rather than suppressed. ~ Glenn Greenwald
As noted by Greenwald, social media platforms claim the right to be the arbiters of truth by hiring so-called fact-checkers and relying on experts at the World Health Organization.
However, we have repeatedly seen the WHO issue statements that have turned out to be inaccurate or false — sometimes by their own admission — so just how reliable are they? By strictly sticking with the WHO's guidance and censoring everything else, the censors have in many instances promoted misinformation exclusively.
Greenwald gives the example of masks. In February and March 2020, the WHO did not recommend wearing face masks and actually warned they might be counterproductive. Now all of a sudden, masks are a must, even though the science hasn’t changed one bit.
In fact, the evidence that masks don't protect against viral transmission has only grown stronger. Early on the WHO also questioned whether human-to-human transmission was even possible and cast doubt on the true danger of the virus.
"That's the nature of human fallibility," Greenwald says. "What looks like a proven orthodoxy one month becomes a gross error the next, and that's exactly why these things have to be debated rather than suppressed."
Risks of Censorship Are Too Grave To Be Justifiable
When asked whether he believes nothing should ever be censored on health grounds, he wisely replies that not only do people need to rely on their own common sense when encountering information, but institutions also need to work to build credibility and public trust.
Indeed, refusing to hold a discussion about the scientific evidence does not build trust. Forcibly shutting down anyone who raises sensible questions does not build trust. Destroying the reputations and livelihoods of people who report on questions raised does not build trust.
In short, the medical industry, and the vaccine industry in particular, have severe trust and credibility deficits that they themselves created and continue to grow with the help of big tech and national intelligence agencies who are going to extreme lengths to prevent counter narratives from getting out.
Greenwald also points out that the U.S. has never before allowed government to intervene in the public discourse in this way. It should be undisputable that censorship is anathema to a democratically run, free and open society. While there may not be a benefit to allowing misinformation to be disseminated, the risks of censoring are simply too grave to be justifiable.
Big tech censorship is even more insidious than government censorship, because it's far more opaque. At least if the government says it's going to censor certain kinds of expression, there's some level of transparency in how that's being done.
Private tech companies, on the other hand, move the goal post at will, and they're never entirely clear about who will be censored, for what, exactly, or how. What's more, there's no real process for appeal. Greenwald points out that social media companies never really wanted to be in the position of being censors but were pressured into it by politicians, in some cases, and mainstream media journalists in others.
Journalists initially wanted to maintain control over the public discourse by restricting the competition's reach, and once social media companies relented and started censoring, the whole thing just snowballed and grew.
The problem we face now is that censorship fortifies power and is very difficult to end once it has taken hold. This in turn does not bode well for individual freedom or democracy as a whole. Censorship is a direct threat to both.
It also has a tendency to spread ever more widely, covering more and more topics as we go along. For example, there was active suppression and censorship of certain political issues leading up to the 2020 presidential election, and now there's censoring of evidence showing election interference. What will be next?
Technocratic Totalitarianism Is at Our Doorstep
The fact, then, that U.S. and U.K. intelligence agencies are getting involved in censoring should tell us something. It tells us it's not really about protecting public health. It's about strengthening government control over the population. The fact that intelligence agencies view vaccine safety advocates as a national security threat also tells us that government is now in the business of protecting private companies, essentially blurring the line between the two.
If you criticize one you criticize the other. In short, if you impede or endanger the profitability of private companies, you are now viewed as a national security threat, and this falls squarely within the parameters of technocracy, in which government is dissolved and replaced with the unelected leaders of private enterprise.
The right and freedom to critique one's government is a hallmark of democracy, so this state-sponsored war against truthful information is clear evidence of a radical turn toward technocratic totalitarianism. While the situation may appear hopeless, it's not yet too late to turn things around. For some encouragement, listen to Kennedy Jr.'s speech below.
Resistance is the only way forward, and one way you can resist censorship is to find ways around it. One such way is to subscribe to this newsletter, and any other newsletters you find interesting, and to share information you find valuable with your family and friends via more old-school means such as email and text message.
At the bottom of each page, you'll find an "Email Article" button that makes my articles easy to share. Also consider eliminating Facebook and all Google-based services to cut down on their data mining of your personal information, as all of it is being used against you in one way or another, whether you're aware of it or not.

Clinical Research has changing into a shooting field of study and business, on account of the separated necessities of the people in the field of medicine and clinical information the supervisors structures are reliably changing into the motivation behind get together of this sharp zone.
As one of the mentioning of clinical assessment and clinical starters is to be changed and familiar with the chance of clinical information the heads and having authority of data will make you a tremendous asset in your workplace, especially if it goes under medication affiliations and clinical assessment. As the world upgrades to a more modernized, data subordinate method for concentrate correspondingly as work we begin considering about what absolutely goes under the term clinical information the board, and what a Clinical information the heads structure fuses?
 Clinical Data Management
As clinical assessment requires a colossal heap of clinical human starters, they end up with a great deal of data and clinical information supervisors are the ones who cycle, gather and manage the data they get subject to the basics. This other than interlaces the information gave by people from the human fundamentals, fulfilling tasks in due time and achieving protests they have set for the arrangement of prescription subject to the data the pile up. There are different sorts of systems, two of which are the most perceptible and typically used they are the paper based designs and the electronic data based constructions, the paper structures join data course of action that is done by hand, not unequivocally and is subsequently changed over and passed on into the clinical information the heads structure. Then again in the electronic framework for get-together the data is taken care of directly into the construction instead of having a record that is genuinely kept by the affiliation.

The candidates are given full introduction with the help of the system cell which continually outfits them with odds of work in occupations, for instance, Clinical information the board, Clinical endeavor the heads, CR assessment, and so on People who have a valid enthusiasm for this field will beat needs as administrators as affiliations are reliably saving watch for gifted, steady masters in the zone of arrangement and remedy assessment. As the world advances by a wide edge, it is major to consider the differing innovative advances and appearances that happen in the clinical field as we will all be affected by it later on.

The facts about how the U.S. processes unaccompanied migrant children at the border
The treatment of migrant children taken into custody along the U.S.-Mexico border has become a focal point of the national debate over immigration policy.
Over the past decade, Democratic and Republican administrations have struggled to adequately and safely process large numbers of unaccompanied minors, who have special legal protections under U.S law.
Since 2013, U.S. authorities along the southern border have taken into custody more than 445,000 unaccompanied children, including 72,000 in 2014 and 80,000 in 2019, according to Department of Homeland Security data.
The U.S. government has, for the most part, sought to discourage these children, many of whom come from areas in Central America plagued by poverty and violence, from journeying to the southern border, highlighting the often dangerous trek north.
Earlier this week, the Biden administration reopened an influx facility to house migrant teenagers in Texas in response to a marked uptick in interdictions of unaccompanied children that has severely strained the shelter bed space the U.S. government has for them.
The move sparked condemnation from critics with different political and policy views. Some suggested the U.S. government should not be in the business of holding minors in any facilities like the one opened in Texas. Others madeaccusations of hypocrisy, inaccurately equating influx holding facilities and state-licensed shelters with a border center featuring chain-linked partitions resembling "cages."
To provide clarity on the current situation, here's an overview of the legal authorities and policies that govern the care of unaccompanied children, as well as the facilities where these minors are housed while in U.S. government custody.
What is the current legal process for unaccompanied children?
U.S. law defines unaccompanied migrant children as minors who don't have legal permission to be in the country and who are taken into government custody without an accompanying parent or legal guardian.
The Homeland Security Act of 2002 charged the Office of Refugee Resettlement, a branch of the Department of Health and Human Services, with housing unaccompanied migrant children until they could be placed with vetted sponsors, who are typically family members residing in the U.S.
Another law, passed with bipartisan support in 2008, requires all government agencies to transfer most unaccompanied migrant children to the refugee office within 72 hours, absent extraordinary circumstances.
Unaccompanied children are typically first taken into custody along U.S. borders by Customs and Border Protection (CBP), a law enforcement agency whose facilities were largely designed to hold single adult men for short periods of time.
Internal CBP policy dictates that all migrants, especially unaccompanied minors, should be transferred out of the agency's custody within 72 hours of apprehending them.
Once in the custody of the refugee office, migrant children have access to lawyers and, in some cases, child advocates. The agency is bound by law and a landmark federal court settlement to continuously pursue the release of these minors to sponsors who are willing to care for them.  The refugee office is allowed to release children to parents and legal guardians, as well as immediate relatives like siblings, grandparents, uncles, aunts and first cousins. In limited circumstances, children can also be placed with distant relatives or unrelated sponsors if no other caretakers are located. The agency requires all prospective sponsors to undergo background checks.
In some circumstances, the refugee office is unable to identify any sponsors for children. The agency can't house minors once they reach legal age, which has, on some occasions, led to teenagers being transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers for adults on their 18th birthdays.
Under the Flores Settlement Agreement of 1997, the U.S. government committed to house migrant children in the "least restrictive" settings possible and provide them basic necessities like water, food, toilets and medical care.
Do unaccompanied children have a legal right to stay in the U.S.?
Unlike migrant adults and families, U.S. law does not require unaccompanied children to seek asylum through an adversarial courtroom setting. Instead, they are allowed to undergo child-sensitive interviews with asylum officers. Unaccompanied minors are also shielded from expedited deportations.
In addition to asylum, unaccompanied minors can request visas for trafficking victims, as well as a protection known as Special Immigrant Juvenile Status that can place undocumented children who were abandoned, neglected or abused by one or both parents on a pathway to U.S. green card status.
If they lose their legal cases, unaccompanied children can be deported to their countries of birth. However, Department of Homeland Security data shows the vast majority have not been deported in recent years.
Are unaccompanied children held in "cages"?
Border Patrol oversees police-like stations with cinder-block cells that government officials and advocates agree are not adequate to hold children. Migrants have called these facilities "perreras," or dog kennels, as well as "hieleras," due to the cold temperatures experienced while sleeping on concrete floors.
During surges in border crossings in 2014 and 2019, these border stations became dangerously overcrowded, garnering national attention. Children were held for prolonged periods of time in cells with one toilet and border agents even used parking lots as makeshift detention areas.
CBP has also opened "soft-sided" tent complexes specifically designed to hold unaccompanied minors and families with children during upticks in border apprehensions. While migrants have more accommodations and space in these facilities, they are still secure structures designed for short-term custody.
In 2014, the Obama administration converted a warehouse in McAllen, Texas, into a detention facility and installed chain-linked fencing to divide populations, like teenagers and families. Photos from the facility provoked a massive uproar in 2018 when the public became aware of the Trump administration's policy of separating thousands of migrant families.
The notion of "kids in cages" gained traction and was subsequently used to criticize the Trump administration's hard-line border and immigration policies, during and after the family separation crisis.
Where are unaccompanied minors housed after leaving Border Patrol custody?
The Office of Refugee Resettlement oversees shelters and foster homes that are licensed by states to house children.
Private nonprofits and for-profit groups operate more than 170 housing facilities in 22 states under grants from the refugee office. In limited circumstances, some youth are transferred to facilities that are more restrictive.
The refugee office offers unaccompanied youth in its custody food, educational services, access to legal counsel, recreational activities and medical services, including vaccination.
During influxes of border apprehensions, Republican and Democratic administrations have placed unaccompanied children in large temporary facilities. Unlike shelters, these facilities, used or built on federal property, have not been subject to state child welfare requirements.
The Obama administration used three Department of Defense installations to temporarily house unaccompanied children in 2014 and opened a temporary holding facility in Homestead, Florida, in 2016.
The Trump administration, meanwhile, opened two additional "influx" facilities in Texas in 2018 and 2019. Along with the Homestead facility, the facilities in Tornillo and Carrizo Springs — which were ultimately closed — came under withering criticism from advocates who objected to the housing conditions and the hiring of for-profit companies to run the installations.
On Monday, the Biden administration reopened the Carrizo Springs facility and is considering reopening the dormant Homestead facility to respond to the marked increase in apprehensions of unaccompanied minors along the southern border in recent days.
Children are not being held in cells at the Carrizo Springs facility, which does not have chain-linked fencing.
While the refugee office oversees more than 13,000 beds for migrant children, it has said it can only use about 8,000 because of COVID-19 mitigation protocols. As of Monday, more than 7,100 of the available beds — or about 90% of them — were full.
Were unaccompanied children treated differently under Trump or Obama?
The Trump administration, and to some extent the Obama administration, argued that the legal safeguards Congress created for unaccompanied children encouraged teenagers and other minors from impoverished areas in Central America to enter the U.S. without authorization.
Both administrations urged Congress to change the law, which drew opposition from advocates.
Over four years, the Trump administration instituted several unprecedented policies to deter unaccompanied children from coming to the U.S. border, including a broad ban on asylum for non-Mexican minors and efforts to prosecute undocumented immigrants who sought to sponsor children in the refugee agency's care.
During its "zero tolerance" crackdown, the Trump administration also incorrectly designated thousands of children it separated from their families as unaccompanied and sent them to shelters alone while their parents were prosecuted for crossing the border illegally.
In March 2020, the Trump administration invoked a public health authority dating back to the late 19th century to authorize border officials to expel migrants, including unaccompanied minors, without letting them apply for U.S. refuge. Thousands of unaccompanied children, including victims of gang and domestic violence, were expelled until a federal judge blocked the practice in November.
While an appeals court lifted that order late last month, the Biden administration has since announced it will exercise its discretion to not expel unaccompanied children. Instead, it will continue transferring them to the refugee office.
That policy choice, which White House press secretary Jen Psaki called a "human and moral objective," could prove to be an early logistical and political test for the Biden administration. The alternative, Psaki said Wednesday, is off the table for now.
"We can send them back home," Psaki said. "We're not doing that." Article Source

Conservatives backed the ideas behind Obamacare, so how did they come to hate it?
Mitt Romney, left, and Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the Home, in a presidential debate in Des Moines, Iowa. Each males backed a number of the authentic concepts of the ACA. Charlie Neibergall/AP Picture
The Inexpensive Care Act is again earlier than the U.S. Supreme Court docket within the newest of dozens of assaults in opposition to the legislation by conservatives combating what they now understand to be a authorities takeover of well being care.
But, in an odd twist of historical past, it was Newt Gingrich, one of the crucial conservative audio system of the Home, who laid out the blueprint for the Inexpensive Care Act as early as 1993. In an interview on “Meet the Press,” Gingrich argued for people’ being “required to have medical insurance” as a matter of social duty.
Over time, he drew on concepts from the conservative Heritage Basis and Milton Friedman to recommend “which means discovering methods by means of tax credit and thru vouchers so that each American should purchase insurance coverage, together with, I feel, a requirement that for those who’re above a sure stage of earnings, it’s a must to both have insurance coverage or submit a bond.”
If Gingrich laid the blueprint for the ACA, how did the legislation change into a punching bag for right-wing politicians and their appointees within the courts? As consultants (Robertson | Epstein) on well being legislation and coverage, we will likely be watching the Supreme Court docket’s oral arguments on the ACA. If the courtroom strikes it down, we count on that it’s going to drive Congress to sometime enact a single-payer system, which will likely be legally invincible. Allow us to clarify.
A bipartisan consensus
In 1986 President Ronald Reagan signed a legislation known as EMTALA – the Emergency Remedy and Energetic Labor Act – recognizing that uninsured People would get sick and would present up at emergency rooms needing well being care. Reagan and his Republican Senate majority, led by Bob Dole, agreed with their Democratic colleagues within the Home that, as a society, we merely can not flip away fellow People to die on the streets. So, to this present day, EMTALA requires hospitals to offer emergency well being care. However it gives no funding mechanism to do it. Hospitals can attempt to shift these prices to different payers, or attempt to go after the sufferers themselves, who usually haven’t any various however chapter.
With EMTALA in place, conservatives started to embrace the aim of getting everybody into the insurance coverage system. Conservatives considered having insurance coverage as a matter of non-public duty, to keep away from passing well being care prices on to others.
Conservatives additionally turned to the Gingrich mannequin, as a result of they lengthy feared the choice of a single-payer system. What we now name Medicare for All would depart out insurance coverage firms and as an alternative depend on the federal authorities as the only insurer. Certainly, Reagan acquired his begin in nationwide politics throughout the 1960s campaigning in opposition to the enactment of Medicare. He claimed it might result in a socialist dictatorship that might “invade each space of freedom we’ve got identified on this nation.” So, with single-payer off the desk, a person mandate for personal medical insurance was the conservative answer.

The controversy over preexisting circumstances
Right this moment, our society has made one other ethical dedication that insurers can not flip away the sick. However the market can not let individuals wait till they’re sick to purchase insurance coverage. That may be like shopping for owners insurance coverage when your home is already on hearth. If insurers insured solely sick individuals, premiums must be exorbitantly excessive. Slightly, insurers should be capable to unfold the danger of any of us getting sick over a big base of wholesome subscribers.
Accordingly, when Republican Mitt Romney was the governor of Massachusetts, he spearheaded a landmark reform that protected sufferers with preexisting circumstances. He additionally acknowledged the necessity to pay for it. Via bipartisan legislative debate and bargaining emerged the person mandate – a solution to encourage individuals to purchase insurance coverage, even after they had been wholesome.
When Barack Obama was elected president, he initially resisted the concept of a person mandate. However he lacked the votes for a single-payer strategy. Within the ACA, he settled on a weak mandate with a low financial penalty for failure to conform, an growth of Medicaid by means of the states, and subsidies so everybody might afford protection on the non-public market, simply as Newt Gingrich proposed so a few years in the past.
The appropriate wing pivots
One might need imagined a spherical of conservative applause, however as an alternative Republicans pivoted to assault mode. Even Gingrich began arguing that the person mandate was “clearly unconstitutional.” The legislation in the end handed with no Republican votes.
The primary problem to the ACA that reached the Supreme Court docket was in 2012, NFIB v. Sebelius. The problems had been the constitutionality of the mandate that individuals purchase insurance coverage or face a penalty, and congressional growth of state Medicaid protection for poorer sufferers.
On the primary level, conservative Supreme Court docket justices determined that Congress lacked the facility below the Structure’s commerce clause to enact the mandate. Though conservative justices usually look to the “authentic intent” of the founders, the 5 conservatives ignored the truth that in 1790 and 1798, George Washington and John Adams every signed legal guidelines requiring the acquisition of medical insurance by ship homeowners and sailors.
Nonetheless, Chief Justice Roberts saved the ACA’s mandate, discovering it a reliable train of the Structure’s taxing energy; he was joined by the 4 extra liberal justices.
One other key conservative precept is federalism – to retain a central position for the states. The ACA carved out an essential position for the states in increasing the state-administered Medicaid program to offer well being look after poor People. However within the NFIB case, the Court docket conservatives insisted that states be allowed to choose out.
Whereas on the floor this place appeared like a vindication of states’ rights, in our view, the message to Congress was easy: Don’t contain the states in any respect. To attain common protection, the federal authorities must do it alone, with a easy federal entitlement, like Medicare.
The 2012 ACA case subsequently set a wierd precedent. The result’s a lopsided studying of constitutional authority. The federal authorities has a weakened energy to work with non-public companies and with states to attain common protection. In the meantime, the federal authorities has an almost invincible energy to itself tax and spend.

A clean slate?
The battle was not but over. In 2019, President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans eradicated the tax penalty for going with out insurance coverage. A choose in Texas then held that in doing so, Congress inadvertently repealed your entire ACA, together with its subsidies, protections for preexisting circumstances and growth of Medicaid. The choose theorized {that a} tax of zero will not be a authorized nullity, however reasonably an unconstitutional and deadly flaw that brings down your entire invoice.
That case is the one now within the Supreme Court docket. The authorized arguments are convoluted, relying on whether or not one a part of the Inexpensive Care Act might be “severed” from the nullified tax. Some conservative authorized students have panned the problem.
The conservatives who now management the Supreme Court docket face an odd dilemma. Within the quick run, they might strike down the ACA, inflicting chaos that Congress and the president might not be ready repair, given the politics. Nevertheless, so long as American legislation displays the ethical commitments to individuals with emergency well being care wants and preexisting circumstances, then sometime Congress should discover a solution to pay for it.
If conservatives hold killing conservative reforms like the person mandate and increasing Medicaid by means of the states, the one various left will likely be a single-payer system, like Medicare for All. Paradoxically, the Supreme Court docket has made eminently clear that such a easy tax-and-spend strategy is constitutionally invincible.

Well being specialists warn that higher entry to medicines is only one piece within the very giant puzzle of stopping HIV transmission in the US. All of it underscores simply how advanced tackling HIV has been up to now and continues to be within the current.
The promise for higher PrEP entry
"We are proud to partner with CDC to dramatically expand access to medication that can help prevent new HIV infections," Gregg Alton, chief affected person officer of Gilead Sciences, stated within the firm's assertion in early Could. "We believe today's donation, combined with efforts to address the root causes of the epidemic, such as racism, violence against women, stigma, homophobia, and transphobia, can play an important role in ending the HIV epidemic in the United States, particularly in parts of the country with the highest burden of disease." The aim is to increase entry of the high-cost drug -- central to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) therapy for HIV prevention -- to people who find themselves low-income, both uninsured or underinsured, and are in danger for contracting HIV. The deal between the corporate and the U.S. authorities will final by way of the tip of 2025 and will probably prolong to 2030, based on a press release from Well being and Human Providers Secretary, Alex Azar. The medical neighborhood has lengthy been proponents of PrEP because the extremely efficient face of therapy to stop HIV. The drug routine truly consists of two medicines in a single capsule, prescribed for each day use by people who find themselves HIV-negative and in danger for contracting HIV. The drug is not low-cost, with an inventory worth of as much as $2,000 for a 30-day provide. Gilead has touted a co-pay coupon help program to assist people who find themselves commercially insured. The Trump administration heralded the announcement as a key a part of realizing its pledge to eradicate HIV from the US by 2030. As a part of its four-pronged strategy to hit this aim, the federal government zeroed in on the necessity to present PrEP to at-risk populations, based on the CDC. Simply weeks after this initiative was first highlighted within the president's State of the Union tackle, the CDC revealed that the annual decline in new HIV numbers has stalled, additional highlighting the necessity for extra aggressive measures. That being stated, some medical professionals say we've got to attend and see how impactful this can be. Dr. Hyman Scott, MPH, the medical analysis medical director at Bridge HIV and an assistant medical professor of medication on the College of California San Francisco (UCSF), informed Healthline that it's not precisely clear if this impacts the corporate's present voucher program and help efforts for people who find themselves low earnings. He stated, as with many drug producers, there is not any publicly out there knowledge on how many individuals profit from Gilead's present efforts and it is unclear if these initiatives can be discontinued as soon as this partnership with the CDC goes into impact. "I think that is still an open question in terms of what advantage the donation has over the existing infrastructure," Scott stated. "One thing is that we will have more transparency. We will be able to see -- if it's run by the CDC and administered by the CDC -- who is using the program, who is accessing it, who is staying on ," he stated. "Because, right now, we don't have any data on the people currently using this patient assistance program from Gilead." Scott stated that as a healthcare supplier it is irritating to see how the excessive price of the drug could make crucial, life-saving therapy out of attain for many who may want it most. "The cost of Truvada has been a significant barrier for expanding PrEP use in the U.S.," he added. "I saw a patient a couple of months ago who previously tried to get on PrEP, had a $1,600 bill to access it for just one month found it very discouraging for him. Subsequently, he was diagnosed with HIV." Scott careworn that for PrEP to work on society at giant, "barriers need to be removed" and the price of medicines is a "big barrier for those who have no insurance or gaps in insurance or the underinsured who have high co-pays and deductibles." Dr. Kristin Englund, an infectious illness knowledgeable at Cleveland Clinic, informed Healthline that simply providing free medicines will not be sufficient for folks. She stated that individuals who obtain the therapy nonetheless have to go in each three months for evaluations, which embody assembly a supplier, getting lab checks accomplished, and doing an HIV screening to ensure they're nonetheless HIV-negative. None of that is free and the prices of those common visits alone -- even with out paying for PrEP -- may be price prohibitive. "This presents big barriers to getting PrEP to appropriate populations who need it. To at-risk populations, which include adolescents, young adults, people of color, and other at-risk groups like men who have sex with men (MSM), bisexuals, transgender people," she careworn. "We need to have a better ability to reach those populations and provide them with continuity of healthcare regardless of insurance." Englund stated the brand new donation of medicine from Gilead to 200,000 folks goes to "go a long way toward helping with at least the medication portion" of their care, however past that, extra must be accomplished to ensure the healthcare system advantages these in want. Not everybody thinks this company donation is praiseworthy. The New York Occasions Editorial Board issued and editorial that stated whereas laudable on the floor, these sorts of donations "have a long history of doing more for drugmakers than for patients." They highlighted the truth that a month's provide of Truvada prices roughly $6 to make and sells for greater than $1,600 in the US, based on the PrEP4All Collaboration, an advocacy group. "Owing partly to those prices, only about 18 percent of the million or so at-risk Americans who need the drug have access to it," the New York Occasions editorial board wrote. "Gilead's donation could double that percentage, but only if it's reserved for patients who aren't already receiving Truvada through the company's existing financial aid programs. The deal, which Mr. Trump is said to have negotiated himself, contains no such guarantee."
A generic hits the market
Complementing this information, Gilead introduced that a generic type of the drug can be made out there in 2020, which is a full 12 months sooner than beforehand acknowledged. The corporate reached a cope with Israel-based Teva Prescribed drugs to launch a generic model of Truvada to the market. Gilead included data on the generic of Truvada within the firm's current SEC submitting. Previously, Gilead has come below fireplace from HIV advocacy teams for seemingly holding onto the patent for the drug, stopping competitors, and conserving costs at their sky excessive charges. "While Gilead's announcement that generic Truvada will be made available in the United States a year early is a victory for the LGBTQ+ community, for HIV activists, and for U.S. taxpayers, this should only be the beginning. Even their announcement today leaves Gilead with exclusive rights to Truvada as PrEP for another 15 months and Teva as the only generic manufacturer on the U.S. market," wrote Dr. Aaron S. Lord of PrEP4All, in a weblog publish. "This will do little to reduce the price in a way that will increase access and PrEP4All remains suspicious of the terms and lack of transparency surrounding the Teva settlement. I have to ask, what's to stop them -- other than a desire for profit margins -- from releasing the rights now?" As with the information of the donation, Englund cautioned that we've got to attend and see how this performs out. She stated that we'll should see what the worth level for a generic type of the drug can be as soon as it hits the market. "For folks who don't have insurance, I anticipate it's going to be exceedingly expensive -- prohibitive for them -- to be on PrEP," Englund stated. She added that it is unclear what insurance coverage firms can be prepared to cowl and what can be left for shoppers to pay. It has been a blended bag of reports headlines for Gilead. Separate from this, the Washington Publish reported that the corporate engaged in offers to dam generic drug competitors for the HIV therapies it places out to market. This occurred even after the corporate's patents on medicines expired. The information was revealed by way of a civil antitrust lawsuit delivered to the U.S. District Courtroom in San Francisco by HIV and AIDS activists. The Gilead spokeswoman responded to the Publish: "We have entered into partnerships with other companies with the goal of bringing life-saving therapies to patients in need... Any assertion that we worked to delay availability of life-saving medication to patients is absolutely false."
Reaching at-risk communities
"I think in the larger picture, we should not have any uninsured people in the United States. I'm just thinking in the broader context of 'we shouldn't have to have a program for uninsured. We shouldn't have anyone not on insurance,'" Scott stated. "Everyone should have access to care." Scott was chatting with the truth that fights over making PrEP extra accessible contact on features of the healthcare system that make it extremely exhausting for folks -- particularly these of decrease earnings ranges and who're a part of marginalized populations -- to get the care they should keep wholesome and, in some circumstances, alive. "PrEP is not just the pills. You require a visit with a clinician, your healthcare provider, laboratory testing -- all those are not covered by the access to medications. Access to the drug is not all you need for PrEP treatment," he stated. "We can't lose sight of that. In California, we have a state-funded and supported PrEP assistance program. It came based on a lot of advocacy from people," he added. Englund added that treating HIV is advanced. It includes an understanding of cultural and socioeconomic obstacles that stop folks from accessing therapy and avoiding HIV. She additionally stated it is essential to succeed in all at-risk populations -- from transgender folks to those that are IV-drug customers. It includes education schemes, therapy as prevention, in addition to addressing systemic issues in healthcare that gasoline disparities in care. "I think the easiest part of providing PrEP is writing the prescription. That's simple. But, making sure that your patient is in a position to get it, to maintain it, to practice other harm-reduction practices -- that gets complex," Englund stated. "I appreciate the overarching initiative of eradicating new diagnoses by 2030, but it's a lot more involved than simply writing prescriptions." Read the full article

Do insurers have COVID-19 covered?
New Post has been published on https://2insurance.top/do-insurers-have-covid-19-covered/
Do insurers have COVID-19 covered?
The Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak that started in China in the direction of the tip of final 12 months has now turn out to be a worldwide pandemic. Though it now seems to be slowing in China, the unfold of the illness is accelerating elsewhere, with the World Well being Group just lately describing Europe as its present `epicentre’. Governments are reacting in ever extra dramatic methods, closing borders, imposing lockdowns and journey restrictions, shutting faculties and faculties, and banning mass gatherings equivalent to sporting occasions.
The way in which the disaster will run from right here can’t be recognized. However alongside the tragic human toll, it’s already having appreciable financial impacts, posing main challenges to the worldwide provide chain and sure enterprise sectors equivalent to airways, journey and leisure, and inflicting important inventory market volatility and a few precipitous falls. Central banks together with the US Federal Reserve and the European Central Financial institution (ECB) have responded by slicing rates of interest. The ECB has expanded its quantitative easing program to make extra liquidity out there and the Fed may observe go well with after the US joined many different nations in declaring a `nationwide emergency’.
A disaster equivalent to Covid-19 impacts all enterprise sectors  – but it surely particularly places a highlight on insurers who can count on to be inundated with normal inquiries and claims throughout a number of completely different strains, whether or not that be for well being, life or non-life cowl.  Balancing the necessity for responding to this inflow of exercise within the contact centres with a shortly shifting distant workforce is an space that insurers are working to deal with. In fact, nations are at completely different levels of coronavirus exercise.
So, how is the insurance coverage business more likely to form as much as the unfolding disaster? What are the implications throughout the completely different segments of the business? And what longer-term traits may the outbreak serve to usher in for the longer term?
Restricted publicity for Common Insurers?
Beginning with non-life or normal insurance coverage first, I count on the affect on claims to be comparatively manageable. Most insurers realized the teachings from the SARS outbreak of 2003 and launched exclusion clauses for communicable illnesses and epidemics/pandemics into most non-life merchandise equivalent to enterprise interruption and journey insurance coverage.
Enterprise interruption insurance policies often pay out provided that bodily injury happens to a company’s property or operations  – so coronavirus associated claims might not be coated, however there’s potential for future disputes on this situation. Journey insurance coverage, in the meantime, might supply cowl if a buyer is identified with the virus earlier than or throughout their journey  – however not for journey that’s cancelled due to the pandemic, until a buyer has taken out premium `any trigger’ cowl, which only a few have.  In fact, curiosity in `premium’ insurance policies may change in a world after COVID-19.
Occasion cancellations might trigger higher losses to insurers as some massive occasions (however definitely not all) have insurance policies which will cowl them even for epidemics or pandemics. The most important occasion happening this 12 months is the Tokyo Olympics the place analysts estimate roughly $2bn of protection.
It’s doubtless that the reinsurance sector will bear a few of the brunt right here, as insurers declare again the prices of canopy from them over a sure threshold. One main world reinsurer, for instance, has been quoted as having publicity of over 500 million euros ought to all occasions coated for pandemics be cancelled.
Nevertheless, there are two probably massive areas to look at for non-life. Firstly, commerce credit score insurance coverage, overlaying companies towards money owed that can not be paid by their clients or suppliers. That is an $11bn world market  – and if rising numbers of corporations exit of enterprise because of coronavirus impacts, insurers may face quickly spiralling claims. There are explicit considerations that, alongside some massive corporates in acutely affected sectors, SMEs in lots of markets might be hit exhausting because of provide chain disruption and a crunch in enterprise ranges. The price of this will very a lot rely on simply how dangerous the pandemic turns into, the extent to which containment measures have an effect on completely different sorts of companies, and the way lengthy it lasts.
The second space is employees’ compensation claims. We may see spikes in employees claiming they weren’t adequately protected by their employers towards publicity to the virus led to by their regular working duties. It’s not possible to know at this stage how important such claims may turn out to be. However insurers providing any such cowl to employers might have to brace themselves, relying on how issues develop.
Lastly, the volatility and falling rates of interest inside the monetary markets will doubtless affect normal insurers from an earnings and solvency perspective.  The affect is more likely to be higher for all times insurers and due to this fact is addressed in additional element under.
A blended analysis for Well being Insurers
The affect on medical insurance is difficult to find out at a worldwide stage as a result of the impacts can be very completely different nation by nation. That is each as a result of the variety of precise instances and deaths may range tremendously between nations/areas, and due to the various make-up of well being protection itself. In some nations, such because the US for instance, most healthcare is privately supplied (aside from the aged the place Medicare performs an enormous function), whereas in others, equivalent to Europe and Canada, there’s a lot greater public provision.  In Asia, the nationwide well being programs are sometimes immature and there’s a lot non-public protection.
The important thing situation at the moment in most nations is to allow fast testing of people, notably folks in susceptible populations such because the aged or these with underlying well being situations, particularly compromised immune programs. In most nations, this testing is free (supplied by governments) or the prices are being waived by healthcare suppliers and/or well being insurers. Free remedy, nevertheless, is just not common and these prices will be substantial.
As but, we merely have no idea what the continued remedy necessities and eventual mortality or morbidity charges from the coronavirus can be and due to this fact what the price could be for well being insurers.
Nevertheless, I imagine that the disaster might have various long-term (optimistic) results on the sector. Firstly, because the stress on well being providers rises as a result of sheer variety of sufferers, we’re more likely to see an increase in telehealth providers, providing consultancy to sufferers through cellphone or on-line video providers. This might have constructive long-term results, serving to healthcare attain extra distant and fewer prosperous populations together with the under- or un-insured. Making healthcare extra out there and accessible signifies that, in some small manner, societies might profit from learnings and actions taken throughout COVID-19
Secondly, the very pandemic itself might trigger extra folks to rethink their particular person medical insurance wants. Within the wake of the SARS epidemic, for instance, we noticed a brief spike in essential sickness coverage gross sales in Asia. We may even see the same phenomenon post-coronavirus, with rising gross sales of medical insurance, essential sickness and even life cowl internationally.
Market volatility creating extra difficulties for Life & Retirement Insurers
Of all insurance coverage segments, it’s life insurers who’re going through essentially the most tough challenges.   The business is carefully monitoring the potential impacts on mortality charges, nevertheless, we count on that life insurers might also really feel important impacts due to what’s taking place within the monetary markets.
Due to the long-term property and liabilities that life insurers maintain, market volatility is at all times difficult for the sector  – and we’ve seen excessive volatility in current weeks. Main exchanges all over the world have skilled a few of their worst falls in many years, even when floor has later been made up once more. Actions in equities, rates of interest and credit score spreads create super asset legal responsibility administration dangers for all times insurers as yield curves flatten.
Globally, life insurers handle greater than $20 trillion in property and as a lot as half of that is estimated to be in authorities bonds. However the yields from these have fallen dramatically  – US 10 12 months bond yields have greater than halved for the reason that finish of 2019 for instance.   The disaster additionally places stress on non-Authorities bonds which can trigger credit score considerations and should result in a rise in bond downgrades.
Along with this, as famous earlier, central banks have been slashing rates of interest. We have been already in a low rate of interest atmosphere  – which is at all times tough for insurers typically, however particularly for all times insurers – now charges are heading down even additional (probably under zero in some nations). Legacy companies or merchandise which are extremely delicate to market variables equivalent to variable and stuck annuities, long-term care insurance coverage and common life insurance coverage are more likely to really feel the consequences extra deeply.
All of those elements may end up in solvency ratio challenges. Previous to this COVID-19, a lot has been stated concerning the business being well-capitalized and so insurers could also be ranging from a place of energy because it pertains to capital. Nevertheless, risk-based capital approaches range extensively by nation which impacts how reactive the ratios are to present market situations. For instance, the EU’s Solvency II regime could be very delicate to monetary market volatility and actions in bond yields and credit score spreads. Different capital approaches might be delicate to bond downgrades. Because of this, insurers might want to carefully monitor solvency ratios with the intention to meet financial, regulatory and score company capital necessities.
The sector can be hoping that the pandemic blows itself out earlier than lengthy. In any other case, if market volatility continues and fluctuations persist, they might have to reassess their funding portfolios and exposures to probably decreased funding earnings in addition to defending capital/safety for policyholders and key stakeholders.
Be Cautious concerning the cost-cutting response
Clearly, this 12 months may show to be a tough one for a lot of insurers given the predictions of the economists, a few of that are saying that a “U” formed or perhaps a “W” formed restoration sample could also be extra doubtless now (versus “V” formed). Early questions are beginning to emerge round potential recessions all over the world. Why? We have seen such various virus containment efforts which dramatically affect consumption ranges on a neighborhood stage and due to this fact affect velocity to restoration. Expectations range on the long-term impacts; nobody will be completely certain.
Whereas it’s tempting for insurers to droop funding and reduce prices in such a difficult monetary 12 months, I imagine the disaster creates an incentive for them to do the reverse  – proceed to spend money on how they function and create a extra agile, digitally-enabled enterprise. In different phrases, now greater than ever insurers ought to hold investing forefront of their minds in order that they are often ready for the longer term.
By this I imply firstly embracing the versatile and distant working that can be wanted throughout all sectors as a result of virus, insurance coverage included. The disaster offers the chance for insurers to check and make sure that their companies have enough connectivity to help extra employees working off-site and in versatile methods  – now, and for the longer term too.
What this implies at this time is that administration groups must be quickly assessing operational areas with excessive concentrations of human capital help  equivalent to name facilities, claims, shared service facilities, and many others. to find out the affect. Enterprise disruption or resiliency plans are being examined, burdened and in some instances derived.  That is very true in areas the place there’s a lack of digital workflow instruments, restricted digital or cellular work station capabilities or unscaled communication know-how.  These conventional strategies are sometimes used for finishing average to extra advanced processing actions that require a group strategy to decision.  This case is permitting for a big shift within the adoption fee of recent methods of working, together with the supporting know-how, which can change the methods organizations are run publish disaster.
Talking of know-how, the disaster may be the spur to take a look at transferring extra programs and purposes to the cloud  – an space that insurers have lagged different sectors in. With extra folks working remotely, having programs within the cloud gives a lot higher bandwidth and capability than if employees are accessing on-premise servers remotely. This is a chance for the insurance coverage business and might be the catalyst for this motion. Actuarial modelling software program, for instance, typically sits on people’ computer systems, as there are deemed to be safety points with placing it within the cloud. However with at this time’s cloud providers providing enhanced safety protocols, maybe the time has come for extra of the business to make the transfer.
Extra broadly, insurance coverage companies  – as different sectors  – have to embark on the digital transformation of their organizations, to turn out to be extra agile, responsive and related enterprises. Maybe one legacy of the coronavirus disaster might be that it really propels extra insurers to do this.
These are extraordinarily difficult occasions for people, households, companies and certainly complete societies and economies. The insurance coverage business has a key function to play in supporting clients and societies by way of the disaster and the restoration.

Pro-Choice Versus Pro-Life
By Erin Armstead
You’ve heard others talk about it. You’ve seen at least a dozen people share articles and post opinions about it on social media. You’ve seen the protests on the news, showing people shouting about fetuses being cut up and sold for body parts. How much of it is true?
What started all of this? The debate is pro-choice versus pro-life, the two sides of the abortion debate. This conversation entered public space in the time of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court case that made access to abortion legal across the U.S. in 1973. It has been a hot topic in political conversation ever since. More often than not, if a candidate runs for office on the platform of “family values,” they mean to advertise that they are pro-life.
Many people who identify themselves as pro-life are also fundamentalist Christians, who also often believe that birth control is frowned upon by their God. The pro-life platform has come to a consensus that life begins at the moment of conception, and the people who feel this way have fiercely defended their beliefs, even going out of their way to show up at various locations of Planned Parenthood, a nonprofit organization that provides affordable reproductive healthcare, picketing and shouting at clients that they are “going to hell” and “murdering babies.” This activity is vicious enough to draw the attention that this platform craves. Like any group of people holding a strong belief, they desire to be heard and to share their message with many. To this group of people, shouting directly at vulnerable people, usually already shy enough about showing up to a center for sexual health, is the most efficient method of spreading their message.
Their passion for protecting unborn children is understandable, however, particularly in the light of the 2015 hoax that circulated through social media based on heavily edited “sting” videos released by a pro-life organization called Center for Medical Progress (1). These videos suggested that tissue and organs were being harvested from late-term abortions at Planned Parenthood for trafficking, to the extent that a late-term aborted fetus was kept alive so that its brain could be harvested. However, these purported claims were heavily investigated, and it was revealed that the videos had been significantly edited, and that the aforementioned late-term fetus harvested for its brain had had its heart momentarily restarted by tapping on it, but that the fetus was, in fact, irreversibly deceased at the time of the brain’s harvesting. If these claims had been true, of course, the pro-life outrage would have been warranted; however, fetal tissue donation at Planned Parenthood is not for profit, and the only location of Planned Parenthood that receives any kind of compensation for its tissue donations is strictly regulated by the law and is limited to a total of $60 reimbursement for such things as storage and transportation of the critical fetal tissue (2).
In that light, what does it mean to be pro-choice? Does that mean pro-abortion? The short answer is no. Pro-choice is exactly what it sounds like: to be in favor of whatever choice the person affected prefers to make, because it is, after all, their own body and pregnancy.
Overall, people in the pro-choice camp believe in the right to bodily autonomy, or the right to decide for yourself what you want to do with your own body. There are many reasons a person might want to have an abortion. In the world, there are people who want to have children, but it is physically unsafe for them to do so and might risk their own life or the child’s or both; people who are unfit to be a parent and know it; people who want to have a child, but who may feel as though the child’s life might be at risk or too low-quality if born into their current circumstances; and people who may have conceived under undesirable conditions--such as sexual assault--and cannot bear the thought of looking into their abuser’s eyes for another second, much less, potentially, the rest of their lives in their child. The point is that no one can assume that every child in the world is conceived in favorable conditions, and, especially if the circumstances are undesirable, it is not our place to become involved in the matter unless requested, nor is it the job of the pregnant person to justify their actions. They themselves will live with the knowledge of the loss for the rest of their lives, and, should one desire to punish for ending a potential life, as many people holding pro-life beliefs seem to, it is quite possible that that history, a possible source of grief and regret, would be enough.
The pro-life camp is known for suggesting that the “unwanted children” should simply be given up for adoption, because there are plenty of people desperate to have children who are unable to conceive. Currently, there are more than 100,000 children in the U.S. waiting to be adopted, and it should be acknowledged that if there is indeed such a demand for adopted children, that number should hold at a steady zero instead. In addition to those statistics, there is the fact that more than 200,000 babies have been born as a result of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), which was introduced in 1981, and other similar methods (3.) These numbers suggest that, when possible, future parents truly desperate for a child would rather choose IVF or similar and have their own child rather than adopt someone else’s biological child. This makes adoption a rather less practical solution for the matter at hand.
At least a portion of the group of pro-choice people view the baby’s first breath as the moment when life begins, or, alternatively, at the fetus’s first heartbeat. There is some debate on the matter, but it is agreed that the moment of conception is not when life begins; this thinking would also cast some condemnation on every person who has ever had a miscarriage, which is an unfortunately common natural occurrence outside of the pregnant person’s control.
Some abortions are done out of medical necessity. There are many reasons why a pregnancy would not be a good idea for the mother or child and require ending the developing life before birth. An ectopic pregnancy is when an egg is fertilized and implants outside of the uterine cavity, where life is meant to be created; the fetus cannot develop outside of the uterus, and not only cannot survive, but may threaten the life of the mother if left as is. It is also worth noting that, despite suggestions currently circling on social media to the contrary, ectopic pregnancies cannot be reimplanted in the uterus to produce a surviving embryo (4.) A mother who has diabetes or high blood pressure issues prior to conception, among other common medical issues, may also be regarded as a high-risk pregnancy. In these cases, abortion would not be required, but the pregnancy would need to be closely monitored to be sure that all develops as it should and that there are no complications that would threaten the life of the fetus or mother, which might require an abortion (5.)
You don’t have to be pro-life to be anti-death. Statistics show that in countries across the globe where abortions are illegal, 8 to 11 percent of all maternal deaths, estimated to total about 30,000 women each year, are a result of unsafe, unregulated abortions. 6 Many of these deaths result from self-induced abortions, such as the practice of inserting a bent wire hanger into one’s body to remove the fetus, or inserting herbs into the vagina as a way to induce a miscarriage, which is known to result in septic shock, from which a woman can also die. Part of the focus of the pro-choice platform is to provide safe, medically-regulated abortions for those who desire them. A popular statement in pro-choice conversations is, “Making abortions illegal won’t stop them from taking place. It will only stop the safe ones.” Statistics show that this is true.
In the end, it comes down to whether you will choose to be an idealist who blindly believes that the world is and will be kind to everyone or a realist who sees the world for what it is and knows that there are people who have known pain beyond what we can imagine without having experienced those moments ourselves. Sometimes the most difficult and painful choice, ending a potential life, is the best choice available. That choice should be safely available to all.

Exposed! Mr. Money Mustache’s 2019 Bachelor Spending!
Purchases like this really blow my budget.
These days, I do a fair amount of informal financial coaching for both old friends and newer acquaintances.
It’s a pretty amazing experience, almost as if I were a real doctor – people let down their guard and talk about the details of their financial lives, without the usual hangups and secrecy that tend to plague our society when it comes to the subject of money.
Often, even taking this first step is a huge leap towards creating a more wealthy and prosperous life. Money conversations are not something we should reserve only for our paid professional advisers. We should speak about it openly with our friends and family, and support each other in a lifelong quest to make the most of our lives.
Through these hundreds of little sessions, I have started seeing a pretty consistent pattern:
People who struggle with money see the whole subject as a swirling, confusing mess. Income and spending, debt and retirement accounts are everywhere. They describe the situation in a long, meandering paragraph.
People who are good with money have this stuff more mentally sorted. They can quickly list their income, their assets and debts, and most importantly they know how much money they spend each year.
People who have been good with money for a long time have moved even further. They might not track it very closely, but they still maintain a growing surplus – because living well within their means is just a natural habit, which means there is no conceivable way they can run out of money in their lifetimes. People in this category sometimes need to be coached away from the habit of being too “cheap”, and towards making the most of the opportunity of a lifetime.
As an MMM reader, you are headed straight for Option #3 above.
But you may have to move through #1 and #2 to get there, which means sorting things out and tracking your spending.
Tracking Your Spending is Fun, Useful, and Easy (Yes, really!)
I can already hear your collective groan as I give you this prescription, but adding up your past year’s spending is one of the most useful things you can do with a Saturday morning, and here’s why:
You can see where your money is going to waste and where you can make really easy improvements that completely change the course of your life
You will get the courage to switch jobs, houses, cars, and other life decisions as your fuzzy swirling financial paralysis transforms to a crystal clear understanding of money – one of life’s most useful and fun tools.
You can immediately see how much money you will need to retire. (just take your annual spending and multiply it by 25 as recommended by the 4% rule)
I’ll show you my spending if you show me yours.
Road Trippin’ in a Tesla. I keep this cost low by bartering carpentry or business help with Tesla-owning friends, or renting them on Turo.
Now for the fun part. I like to think that I live in “Category 3” of that list above – most of my major life expenses (housing, cars, health, food, clothing) are lower than average, because I have simple tastes and I love optimizing things.
Meanwhile, I have several sources of income which add up to many times more than my living expenses (stock index funds, real estate investments, this website, and side hustles like carpentry and operating the MMM HQ coworking space.)
So I haven’t been tracking my spending for a while. But a couple of years ago I went through a major life change – the former Mrs. MM and I split up and moved to separate households in the same neighborhood.
With the old routines shaken up, and new things like hosting more parties, outfitting a new home and increased friend/family/long-distance-relationship travel, how has my bachelor spending been transformed?
It’s time to find out.
How Do You Track Your Spending?
My expenses are really easy to track: I funnel all my spending through a rewards credit card, which saves me about $2000 each year. (in 2019 I used the two highest-paying cards from Capital One which you can find here.)
Meanwhile, I hook up a third party financial app to automatically monitor these transactions, alert me to any unusual activity, and – the best part – automatically categorize and add everything up for me. I’ve been using one called Truebill for a couple of years*, and it has the simplest interface of anything I’ve tried – you get results like this:
Recent screenshots from my own Truebill account. (Sorry about all that cash sitting around earning nothing, I will put those little green employees to work ASAP!)
Truebill is great for tracking and improving spending, and you can also track with Personal Capital, which I have used for the last five years or so mostly for keeping tabs on all my net worth (see my 2013 article on that).
BUT you can also all this quite easily with no apps at all, just by downloading the full list of your 2019 transactions from your bank and opening it up as a spreadsheet. In Capital One (which I also use for my checking account), I just clicked on each account and there is a link for “Download Transactions” right at the top of my transactions list.
For me, it was extra easy because I used the same bank for both checking and credit cards, so everything shows up on a single login screen like this – kudos for Capital One for doing this so well since most banks have pretty bad websites:
Lots of useful stuff on my capital one home screen (don’t worry, balances and account numbers, etc. have been modified for public sharing)
So whether you use an app or a conventional spreadsheet, tracking your spending is quite useful, to know where you are now.
But the biggest message to take home from the result this:
These are not your “living expenses.” This is your current level of spending, something that is entirely under your control.
There is always a trick for everything, and you get to decide how many of these tricks to apply.
For my part, I try to use only the tricks that save me money and make my life better in some way. For example, I do my own carpentry and I use my own legs for transportation, because these are a win/win for me. But I do pay an accountant to do my taxes for me. Your own choices may be completely different, but it’s important and empowering to use that word – choices.
Special Notes Before I Share This
Many fun and even “fancy” things in life don’t have to show up as expenses – like parties at the MMM HQ, which is actually a business rather than an expense.
The table below will shock some, offend others, and hopefully inspire you to at least consider a few new things. But because of my unique life situation, I have made a few unusual choices. I’ll explain them in advance so the table will make more sense.
Do I really have zero medical expenses?
Yes, and I have for my whole life – this is a probably combination of dumb luck (genetics) and hopefully-smart luck (I made a guess that 1-8 hours of outdoor physical work, bikes, barbells and salads every day would be good for my health and so far it seems to be working.) But I know this is not a lifelong guarantee, because there are no guarantees.
What about kid related expenses?
My little 13-year-old is pretty low-maintenance these days: he develops stuff on the computer, plays the bass and rides scooters with friends. When we are together, we do these same things along with hikes and bike rides and the odd road trip. Other kids are into more expensive activities and that is wonderful if they enjoy it and you can afford it. This table includes the half of his food and necessities that I pay for, but does not include any money that changes hands between Former Mrs. MM and myself over these final four years of our co-parenting project. However, I am infinitely grateful for how happy and cooperative our arrangement has become, and suffice it to say that nobody needs to feel sorry for either of us in the financial sense either.
How can you even sleep, with no house insurance and no health insurance?
This really depends on your personality type – and mine may be unusual in this regard. I simply don’t worry much about things like theft, accidents, fires, disasters or anything else. I certainly know they are possible, but my mind thinks in statistics and probabilities rather than emotions or fears. In other words, I’m a bit of a robot. And the robot in me says, “On average you will make a profit and you can afford any worst-case consequences, so why buy insurance?”
For people in situations where losing a material possession would be a big deal, insurance may be appropriate. But I also still like the old-school advice of “don’t buy stuff that you can’t afford to lose, and take really good care of the stuff that you do have.”
But this will all be covered in more detail in an upcoming article about health insurance, including an interesting new option I am just about to try this year.
What Else Are You Hiding From Us?
My businesses pay for some stuff (blog-related trips, this computer, tools, etc.) that happens to be fun for me too – this may prevent me from spending personal money on other fun stuff.
Charitable donations, which now total over $300,000 (see previous article), are also not part of what I consider spending. To me, these are a reallocation of a good part of this website’s income to causes that need it more than me. But I probably wouldn’t be brave or badass enough to give away much money, if I were only earning the bare minimum needed to cover my lifestyle spending in the chart below.
And I don’t include income taxes in my spending, because if someone really lived on a level of retirement income to cover even twice this level of spending they would pay no tax. In my situation, I do earn more than I spend, and pay plenty of tax on it. But much like the charitable donations described in the last article, I think of income tax as just another way of contributing a small portion of this super-lucky surplus back to society.
It’s really not a big deal – and I find that statement to be true in all areas of life: as you get older and your material desires drop away, fewer and fewer things seem like a big deal.
Okay, let’s get into it!
MMM’s 2019 Bachelor Life Spending (all figures are for the full year)
CategorySpendingCommentsHousingMortgage + Insurance0Bought the current house ($315k) with cash, and I have been self-insured on houses for the last 5 years or so. Not for everyone but it feels right for me.Property Taxes$1735My current place is a 3Br/2Ba home in an “up and coming” (i.e. working class) central area. Downside: pickup trucks everywhere. Total “Barebones” $13,068My real (still luxurious) living expenses without the travel and $5000 kitchen renovation. Still includes restaurants, booze, cars, gadgets from Amazon, and living in a 3 bedroom detached house! ……………………….……………
So, What Now?
Well, this was a pleasant surprise. I had felt like I was living a total billionaire’s life in 2019, because it has been so packed with interesting people and places and experiences. I always buy whatever I want – after considering whether it will really make me happier – and this leads to a feeling of almost dizzy abundance. But I guess abundance just isn’t that expensive.
2020 is shaping up to be an even bigger year of personal growth and better friendships and hard work. I’m drawing up the plans for an exorbitant second-story deck off of my bedroom. The Tesla Model Y comes out in just a few months, and I am in love with it.
It could get expensive.
Stay tuned and I will let you know how it goes!
In the Comments: do you track your own annual spending? If so, how did you do last year? If not, what is your reason?
*About Truebill: I heard from Haroon Mokharzada as he was just founding the company, and was impressed with his background of seeming to be on the “good guys” team. So I have been a casual user ever since, just to follow their progress. The Truebill service/app is now good enough that I can see it being useful for many people – not just for tracking spending. And they have a sizable development team and a large and growing base of happy users. Nice job y’all!
Affiliate notice: While I have no financial relationship with Truebill, this blog may get a commission for other recommendations within this page, including Personal Capital, Airbnb and the credit card recommendations. And many thanks if you do use them!
