Catching up
@beautcous
Too much time had gone by since Amirah had spent time with Kajal. Between her friend reconciling with her husband, Prince Aamir, and her fight with Enzo, and then learning Di's situation with her soulmate, Amirah felt she had neglected her closest friend. The only reason she hadn't worried so much about Kajal was because she'd seen how happy she was with her husband, it appeared they had worked things out much to Amirah's delight so she wanted Kajal to have her time to make her marriage. It looked today would be the day she would have time with the Indian Princess, Amirah had just came out from a meeting with her Di and their advisors when she caught Kajal standing by the Aina Princess's chambers and immediately she made her way over. "Kajal, what a pleasant surprise." She smiled but it fell the moment she saw how distraught and heartbroken the Princess looked. "Kajal, are you alright?" Amirah hugged the woman before tugging her inside her room for privacy. "Kajal?"
Tumblr media
Finding out that the man she loved had been lying to her had broken her heart into a million pieces. Kajal wanted to believe everything that Aamir had told her, but she knew that it was her love for him speaking. The truth was harder to swallow. He’d had relations with Princess Zafirah and lied to her about it. She would have easily forgiven him for wanting to exact revenge for what she did to him and changing his mind afterwards, after he’d fallen in love with her. She could feel that he was telling the truth with that, she felt it in the way he took her and in how he would stare at her. But forgiving him for lying to her about Zafirah was a whole different story. She couldn’t see herself letting go just like that and because she was so confused over her feelings, she made her way to Amirah’s chambers. Kajal tried to act naturally, but as soon as she saw her friend, her eyes filled up with tears and she hugged her old friend in her arms. “I’m not.” She said a minute later once they were in Amirah’s room. “Everything is a lie, Amirah. He lied to me.”
Tumblr media
Amirah's concern for her friend grew as seconds ticked by when Amirah gently led her into her room, but the moment she shut the doors, Kajal's arms came around her. The Aina Princess hugged the brunette to her protectively, feeling her body shake a bit as she cried. Amirah then moved back just enough to wipe her tears, as Kajal stated she was not okay but before she could ask the next words left her entirely speechless. And she heard the pain in the Indian Princess's voice, her heart squeezed, "Prince Aamir? What did he lie about?" There was disbelief and mild confusion on her tone, but still her heart raced, "oh, Kajal." Amirah pulled her back into the hug and held Kajal to her closer.
Tumblr media
Kajal didn’t want to cry. She’d told Aamir that she needed time, she didn’t want to make an impulsive decision, so she’d gone to Amirah. Her friend had always been kind and levelheaded, but the moment she saw Amirah, her tears welled up in her eyes and she burst into tears. “He came here to get revenge over what I did,” she explained. Amirah already knew the full story by now, so she didn’t have to give her a recap, “but that’s not what he lied about. He does love me, I know he does, he lied to me about Princess Zafirah. I asked him before if anything was going on between them, he always denied it. Today, I overheard them. I don’t know what to do, Amirah. I love him, but I can’t trust that he won’t cheat on me with her.” Kajal sounded desperate as she hugged the other woman and cried in her arms.
Tumblr media
Amirah could hardly believe what she was hearing, the very man who had come to take Kajal back with him had ulterior motives for revenge. All this time, she too had believed Aamir wanted her back but still something seemed off, she had caught the pair many times, and had even noticed how smitten the Prince looked...now to know it was an act. Amirah held her friend closer, heart breaking for the Indian princess and more so when she spoke of Princess Zafirah and his involvement with her. "Kajal, I'm so sorry he did this to you. He shouldn't have been seeking revenge, nor should have he lied about Princess Zafirah." She paused, trying to rack her mind to say anything to make her feel better. "Trust is a delicate thing,  it's hard to earn it back once it's been broken.  Let me ask you. What did he have to say?"
Tumblr media
Kajal wouldn’t normally do this, confide to anyone about her heartache. Then again, she never did have to contend with that in the past. This was the first time she’d fallen in love and the sad part was, the man she knew she couldn’t live without had also broken her trust. She didn’t know what to do and because of it, she’d come to Amirah for answers. Hoping that her friend would have a solution for her. “He told me that wants a chance to prove that he wouldn’t cheat on me. I don’t know what to do. I can’t let him go, but I can’t just forgive him. I know he deserves a chance, but I’m scared. I don’t want to get my broken again when I’ve invested everything in me.” She must’ve sounded like she was whining right then, but really, what else could she do? Her heart ached and with the things going in her mind, she could barely think clearly.
Tumblr media
Amirah fell silent as she listened to her friend's plight, her heart breaking for the Indian Princess with each word she spoke. Although, she did feel some sense of relief that Prince Aamir hadn't cheated on her, but he if hadn't been cheating then he shouldn't have lied to Kajal. Her arms tightened around the brunette, as she spoke. "I don't blame you for feeling this way, and it's natural for you not want to let him go. He's your soulmate, its as if your separating from your very life. I will say this, Kajal, he did a awful thing but if he's serious about proving himself then give him a chance. I do believe in second chances, give him one, he made a foolish mistake in his anger and though I hate that he lied to you. He doesn't sound like a cheater."
Tumblr media
Kajal needed someone who was unbiased to talk to. If she were to confide in her older brother now, she was sure he would encourage her to leave Aamir. Dev was always so suspicious of her husband and it turned out, he had the right to be. But it wasn’t his anger that she needed then, which was why she’d come to Amirah. Eventually, she would have to talk to Dev, but for now, it was easier for her to confide in her old friend and from the looks of it, it sounded like she’d made a great decision. “I think I will let him prove himself and I don’t think that he would cheat on me either, he’s been so devoted to me and if he wanted Princess Zafirah, he wouldn’t have touched me the way that he did,” perhaps she shouldn’t have been so candid with her friend, but it wasn’t like Kajal wasn’t married. It was natural that a married woman would have sex. “I need time. I told him to give me that. I’m just too hurt to face him now, eventually I’ll talk to him again. Thank you for talking to me, Amirah. You don’t know how much this means to me.” She smiled at her friend, and although it was still filled with sadness, she felt a little better now.
Tumblr media
Amirah had hesitated before giving Kajal her honest opinion because she didn't feel right essentially telling her to go back to the man who had broke her heart. She didn't know the Pakistani Prince much, but the man was still Kajal's soulmate which meant it was Amirah's duty to look out for her friend's happiness. At the end of day, it was with the Prince. Plus, she knew Kajal didn't expect anything but pure honesty from Amirah. Her lips twitched at Kajal's rather telling statement, "I don't believe so either, one thing I know - passion can't be faked, Kajal. Take your time then, you don't have to make a decision now but I will implore you to think." She leaned down and kissed her forehead before pulling back and giving her a gentle smile, brushing some of her hair back. "Don't be silly, what did I say about such formalities between us? I believe things will be work between you two with time. Prince Aamir made a grave mistake, but not one he can't amend."(edited)
Tumblr media
While Kajal still felt hurt by everything, she also felt lighter after talking to Amirah. She’d been right for coming to her friend who would have an unbiased opinion and she was glad to have done that. “I’ll take my time. I do love him, but for now, I need space, and I think he knows this too. When I’m ready, I’ll talk to him. In time, I’m sure we can work this out.” She might not have a sister of her own, but she could see Amirah being someone she would want to be sisters with. In a way, she envied Queen Mishka for having such a kind and compassionate younger sister. “You speak as if you know what it’s like to be passionate with someone.” She smiled, giving her friend’s hand a gentle squeeze. “Tell me, is there a special man in your life? Please tell me that there is. You’re much too beautiful to remain unattached.” Kajal probably shouldn’t have been nosy, but this would be a good way to distract herself from her heart ache, so she didn't hesitate to ask.
Tumblr media
"I have no doubt you will, and if he loves you as he says he does, then he will respect your wishes." She squeezed her friends hand, while Amirah was not happy with Prince Aamir she also knew at the end of the day, they would overcome this. It was her Di that she feared for the most, although in her eyes the Pakistani Prince was looking much better in her eyes then Prince Dev. On the grand scheme of things Prince Dev was about to ruin their entire country, he had a long way to go before he made amends with Di and Aina people - perhaps the rest of the world too. Kajal's words snapped her out of her reverie, and she smiled at her friend, her heart skipping a beat as she thought of Enzo. "So, you believe I should have a man because I'm too beautiful? Is that my only good quality? That saddens me greatly Kajal." Amirah was teasing her friend, her twinkling eyes giving her away - hoping it would cheer her up, but she did hesitate speaking of her relationship when Kajal's had broken her heart. "There is, I met my soulmate as well. It's Enzo."
Tumblr media
Kajal smiled and nodded at Amirah. “I will.” She knew that she would have to face Aamir some time, and she would do that eventually, but for now, she couldn’t do that. She needed to stop feeling betrayed first. It wouldn’t be fair of her to throw his mistakes in his face and she wasn’t the vindictive sort anyway. She chuckled at the horror in Amirah’s tone, and for a moment, she forgot about her sadness. “That’s not what I meant, and you know it. I just meant that you shouldn’t be alone. You’re beautiful, yes, but that’s not why you shouldn’t be loved.” She added and felt her eyes widening upon hearing who Amirah’s soulmate is. “Enzo. Your Guardian? He’s hot…” The latter part slipped out and when she took note of it, she laughed, “I probably shouldn’t have said that, but he is. How are things going with him? Did you talk to your Di? Didn’t she announce your betrothal to Prince Aidan the other night?”
Tumblr media
She had no doubt this betrayal hurt her friend deeply since Amirah never condoned lying, if Prince Aamir hadn't cheated on her, Amirah couldn't understand why he lied about it. But it still frustrated the Aina Princess that he initially sought revenge for Kajal running away, in her book two wrongs didn't make a right. Her joke had done the trick as she heard her friend let out a chuckle, causing her own lips to form into a smile, "I know, I have been alone but it was worth the wait for him." It was her turn to laugh at Kajal's comment regarding Enzo. "You're not wrong, he is hot, isn't he? But he's also equally very sweet, I had feelings for him before I knew he was my soulmate. Can I confess something just between you and me?" Amirah nodded, "I spoke to Di and Prince Aidan, I'm not engaged anymore, I'm sure the news will get around that as well. Things are going well, but we have quite alot to talk about and work out as well..."
Tumblr media
The news that Amirah had found her soulmate was one that surprised Kajal, especially the part that he was her Guardian, Enzo. As far as she could tell, the man had always been so aloof. However, if anyone could break his cold front, it would be Amirah. “If he makes you happy, I’m happy for you.” She smiled, completely forgetting about her own heartbreak while she celebrated her friend’s happiness. Kajal has always wanted the people around her to be happy and she couldn’t be more ecstatic that one of her closest friend had found her knight in shining armor, literally. “He is very hot. That’s one of the first things I notice about your Guardian. He’s easy on the eyes. I’m really glad he’s sweet to you too.” The Indian Princess chuckled. “Confess what?” She enquired curiously. “I’m glad to hear it. I’m sure Prince Aidan would find someone else and I wouldn’t worry if I were you. You two will figure things out and I know I’m not an expert in relationships, but if you ever need someone to talk to, I’m here for you.”
Tumblr media
It had been quite some time since both women were able to speak about boys and gush over them a little. Amirah smiled at her friend's words, "thank you, and he does." Keeping it brief only because she had no wish to display her own happiness when Kajal was going through a hard time with her own soulmate. An amused chuckle left her lips at her friend's statement of Enzo but she couldn't blame her, her soulmate was gorgeous she was sure he attracted a lot of attention from women in the palace. "Don't worry, when I first saw him, I thought the same thing." She met her gaze, "To be very honest, I'm so relieved he's not a royal, Kajal. I never wanted to marry a royal and then to find out my soulmate is a normal man, it's so...freeing." She admitted with a sheepish smile, "you're the first person that comes to mind, and I know we will work all of it out in due time." She squeezed her hand.
Tumblr media
This was exactly the kind of distraction Kajal needed to forget about her own heartache. Speaking to a friend always helped, more so when she did it with Amirah. The other woman had always been kind to her and for that reason, it was easy for Kajal to have a simple conversation with her. “You would be blind not to notice how hot he is.” She chuckled, her head nodding away at Amirah’s next set of statement. “Honestly, I don’t blame you for being relieved. It’s hard being married to a royalty. Especially when one is going to take the throne one day.” That was another thing that befuddled her about her own situation. She was a little envious of Amirah. Not only did she have a soulmate that loved her, but she didn’t have to worry about the things that she would have to. Choosing to push the thoughts to the side, she smiled at Amirah, “It’s only fair since I come to you with my problems. Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll have a good life with Enzo. I can’t picture you not having that. Now, I don’t know about you, but I think I could do with some tea. Let’s ring for some and continue our conversation.” For the next few hours, she spent time with her friend and was able to forget about her sorrows. Although there was still so much she needed to work through, all of that could be worked out later.

Audiences are more accepting of a male comedian cracking a certain kind of joke: Faiza Saleem

Audiences are more accepting of a male comedian cracking a certain kind of joke: Faiza Saleem
Faiza Saleem gets away with being very, very rude.
She refers to actress Hania Aamir’s dimples as ‘khadday’ and asks Abbas Ali Jafri if he has hair lice. She sits across Yasir Hussain and Bilal Abbas Khan and recounts their bad career choices. She’s offensive, inappropriate and quite proud of it too. And she manages to do it all because she’s delivering her wisecracks while ‘in character’ as a rotund, sarcastic, obnoxious ‘Dadi’.
Dadi is quite the YouTube star. Bespectacled, her head covered and with a silver pandaan by her side, she’s prone to wiggling her eyebrows lasciviously and switching from flirt to a bad-mouthed thug in a matter of seconds. The famous guests that she invites for short snippet interviews are in for a tough time in her hot seat.
“She’s my favourite amongst all the characters that I have played so far,” Faiza tells me. “If I were to say all the things that Dadi says, people would stop talking to me. But Dadi is my alter-ego. I can be completely rude and it just gets laughed off.”

The hilarious Dadi is merely one side to the multi-faceted Faiza. Over a career that spans seven years — “I have been well-known for four,” she says — Faiza’s taken on multiple personas, acting out small skits that she writes herself: aunty on the phone, the bored socialite, the English-obsessed show-off, the materialistic girlfriend, et al.
“I am very observant,” she explains. “I’m perpetually jotting down small notes on things that I see around me that I may want to write about later. For instance, how people feel that it’s imperative to speak in English, even if they don’t know the language, just to appear superior to others. Or how we tend to start off conversations with ‘I don’t like to gossip but…’ and then gossip endlessly. Or how, at a funeral, there is always this one person, usually very distantly connected to the deceased, who finds it necessary to put up a show by crying profusely but then forgets all misery when dinner is served!”
Her very perceptive powers of observation have culminated in a large number of skits, uploaded on to Facebook and YouTube. The fact that Faiza, today, is a well-recognised popular face provides testament to the strength wielded by social media.
“As a woman I do know that I have to push harder for work opportunities. Audiences are unfortunately more accepting towards a male cracking a certain kind of joke. There is a lot of self-censorship when I write down jokes,” she accepts.
It was only well into her career that she diversified towards other entertainment platforms, performing an opening act on the Lux Style Awards 2017 stage, playing an extended cameo role in the movie Parchi and taking on a hosting tryst on a TV show that continues to be aired on the fledgling Hum News channel.
Her repertoire of work continues to expand. She’s currently working on a web-series in collaboration with social media impresario Taimur Salahuddin aka Mooroo, titled Mian, Biwi aur Therapy. “I have worked quite frequently with Mooroo,” she says. “He understands how to visualise what I write on paper and we’re just on the same wavelength.”

She’s also the founder of Pakistan’s first-ever all-female improv comic troupe, The Khawatoons. In fact, on the day that I meet Faiza, she’s busy planning out her next tour with the troupe. “We begin travelling tomorrow,” she tells me.
“I am getting married in two months and all I am doing right now is travelling with the troupe while simultaneously working on several other projects. My mother asked me today if I planned to make an appearance at my wedding!” she laughs.
Faiza laughs a lot. “I live a good life and I’m doing what I love,” she explains to me. Her climb to internet stardom — and beyond — hasn’t been without its obstacles, but she’s been enjoying the journey.
Faiza says: “The Khawatoons troupe travels across the country all alone and it makes other women realise that they don’t need a man to accompany them wherever they go.”
“I don’t understand why so many celebrities find it necessary to put on airs and graces,” she mulls. “Why not be approachable and give love to your fans? I feel so lucky when people come up to me and tell me that they enjoyed a certain skit. I have even had people lovingly pinch my cheeks!”

A career as a female comedienne is an unconventional choice for Pakistan. What have been some of the biggest difficulties that she has faced?
“As a woman I do know that I have to push harder for work opportunities,” she accepts. “Audiences are unfortunately more accepting towards a male cracking a certain kind of joke. There is a lot of self-censorship when I write down jokes and particularly when we’re improvising on stage as The Khawatoons. Sexual innuendos, political and religious jokes are absolute taboos.

“And then there are my own boundaries. I am an overweight person but I refuse to be stereotyped into characters where I appear to be desperate. I have been offered roles in major projects with a good cast where I play the fat girl who forlornly daydreams about the boy she can never get. I refuse to put out that image. Similarly, in my own skits as well, as when improvising on stage, I steer clear of body shaming.”
She continues, “For some convoluted reason, people sometimes misconstrue this to mean that I am promoting being overweight. Why would I ever want to do that? I go on diets all the time and take part in exercise programmes. But just because someone is overweight doesn’t mean that s/he is depressed and leads an unhappy life. I certainly don’t promote that perception.”
“We usually don’t see entire scripts written round a female protagonist who is overweight. The fat girl is always the humorous side character, but sometimes I don’t want to be the funny one,” she adds.
Social media has proved to be a handy tool for Faiza to push her own boundaries, her way. “I realised very early that I may not get offered the kind of roles that I want to enact. We usually don’t see entire scripts written round a female protagonist who is overweight. We’re yet to create content like Drop Dead Diva where a vibrant, unconventional looking woman is the central character.
“The fat girl is always the humorous side character, but sometimes I don’t want to be the funny one. On my forum on the internet, I can make my own content and be whoever I want to be. I can steer clear of typical, boring roles. It really works.”
Faiza’s success has also inspired many others to realise that they too can break away from societal boundaries and create their own opportunities.
“I have had overweight women come up to me and tell me that I have inspired them to follow their dreams. The Khawatoons troupe travels across the country all alone and it makes other women realise that they don’t need a man to accompany them wherever they go. Once, when we were in Rahim Yar Khan, a little girl came up to us and told us that she wanted to grow up and be a comedian like us. When was that ever an option for Pakistani women earlier? My troupe members may be hilarious women but even they had never thought that they would be comedians when they were growing up. I feel happy that, in some ways, I have shown women the many avenues that they can explore.”
She has also, through various intelligently structured skits, shown the various vices that exist in present-day society. And she does it all in a funny way — that’s a rare talent. “The challenge is to continue maintaining a certain standard while aspiring to rise above it,” she tells me.
And how does she intend to raise standards when she’s flitting from one project to the other, from web-series to TV show to sponsored web ads to a country-wide improve tour to, ultimately, her own impending wedding? Apparently, Faiza’s quite the multi-tasker. “I have never been able to sit in one place at a time,” she shrugs. “This is what I do. I enjoy it.”
Based on the ‘hits’ she manages to generate on YouTube and her constantly growing fanbase, audiences are enjoying it too.
