Did you miss him? Admit it, you missed him.
The demon that terrorized Gravity Falls is back from the great beyond to finally tell his side of the story in The Book of Bill, written by none other than Bill Cipher himself.

Alex Hirsch, #1 New York Times bestselling author, resuscitates this infamous villain and invites fans to a Bill’s eye view of the Gravity Falls universe. how did you make those holy shit!!!
jfjskdk okay I'll take any excuse I get to talk abt this more
How I made my Cardassian prosthetics
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: I'm no expert, it's my first time doing this!! All the resources I used can be found online. In fact, here's a playlist of all the youtube videos I followed, in case you don't want to read the whole post. You can pretty much make any facial prosthetics following these steps, not just Cardassian ones.
What you'll need:
Tumblr media
Plaster bandages, plaster of Paris (a lot more than is pictured here), modeling clay, and liquid latex. You'll also need some things you probably already have around the house, like vaseline (or cooking oil), plastic wrap, wood glue, rubbing alcohol, q-tips, cotton balls, and setting powder (or baby powder).
Step 1: Face cast
Tumblr media
The goal here is to make a plaster copy of your face that you can sculpt your prosthetics on, by covering your face with plaster bandages and then casting that in plaster of Paris. This is the video tutorial I followed for this step. There are many methods, and you'll find tutorials for all of them on youtube, but this is the easiest way if you're doing it by yourself, and it results in a perfectly useable face cast for our purposes. And, if you're cosplaying Garak like me, it's a great way to get into character by experiencing claustrophobia for the first time in your life!! (Jk it's not actually that bad. I lived.)
The video explains the process better than I could, but here's some tips I learned from doing it! Wear a shirt that you don't mind ruining. Go a bit closer to your eyes than I did here. When you're propping up your mask in a bowl, make sure you're not squishing any parts of it or tilting it! I ended up with a dent in the chin of my face cast because I accidentally dented the mask while I was casting it. And make sure you have enough plaster of Paris! I probably used 2-3 pounds for this part. Here's what I ended up with, before sanding or sealing it with wood glue:
Tumblr media
Step 2: Sculpting
Tumblr media
This is pretty self explanatory, but also probably the hardest part. Just use lots and lots of reference photos. I've got a pretty good stash for Garak, if anyone's interested hdjkfhk. I found that gifs made better references than still photos, since they give you a better sense of the 3D shape. You want to make sure you're using modeling clay that doesn't dry. You don't need any fancy sculpting tools! I used my trusty palette knife to get the small details, but you could probably accomplish the same thing with, like, a spoon and a toothpick. It depends on what kind of clay you're using, but you can dip your finger in a solvent to smooth out the surface of the clay and blend the edges into the face cast. I used rubbing alcohol, but I also heard people recommend acetone. Once you're happy with your sculpt, you can move onto the next step!
Step 3: Casting negatives
Tumblr media
This step is technically optional. The video I followed also outlines an easier way that skips this step, by simply building your prosthetics directly on the sculpt. But casting negatives allows you to get a lot more fine detail, and a smoother finish on the final prosthetics, so that's what I chose to do. Basically, you pour plaster of Paris over your sculpt, and it hardens into a mold you can use to build your prosthetics on.
Again, the video explains it better, but some tips! If it's possible with your sculpt, do it in small pieces instead of the whole face at once. I did the chin, nose, and forehead separately. If you try to do the whole face, there's a greater chance of it getting stuck or breaking. Of course, if you were doing, say, Odo, then it might not be possible to do it in multiple pieces. Another thing to watch out for:
Tumblr media
If your underlying face cast has any "undercuts," or places where it's, like, concave, then if plaster gets into those areas and hardens, your face cast and your negatives will lock together, and you won't be able to use either of them. For me I was worried about the sides of my nose and under my bottom lip. As long as those parts are filled in with clay, then you should be fine. It's okay if your clay sculpt has undercuts! You can see in the (shamelessly stolen) diagram that their sculpt has a lot of undercuts, but that's okay because the clay is soft and won't lock with the plaster, it'll just come off. The video I got the diagram from was also pretty helpful, even if it's meant for casting with different materials than I used. Here are the completed negatives:
Tumblr media
Step 4: Making the prosthetics!
Now you have negatives! Your sculpt may or may not be intact, but if your negatives turned out okay then that's fine. This step is also covered in the video for step 3. Using a stippling sponge, foam brush, or q-tip, stipple thin layers of liquid latex onto your negatives. I found that a q-tip worked best, even if it took longer to cover larger areas. Make sure the edges are very thin, so you can blend them into your skin when you apply the prosthetics. Wait for a layer to dry before adding more latex on top of it, or you'll end up with fucked up results like I had:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Left: first draft, where I didn't let it dry enough before layering more. Right: second draft. Much better!)
Build up bulky areas with pieces of cotton balls, then cover the cotton with a thin layer of latex. Emphasis on thin! It'll take forever to dry if you saturate your cotton with too much latex. This step mostly involves a LOT of waiting. When the latex is fully dry, brush everything with a liberal amount of setting powder or baby powder to prevent the latex from sticking to itself as you peel it out of the mold.
Tumblr media
And now you have your prosthetics! You can tear away some of the excess latex at the edges to make it fit your face better. I ended up tearing away almost all of the edges around the eye ridges, so it would blend better and I wouldn't have to get adhesive so close to my eyes. Tear, don't cut! It'll result in a more natural edge that's easier to blend. This video shows how to apply prosthetics. Use whatever prosthetic adhesive you want! I used spirit gum because it's what I had on hand.
Now you can go forth and live out your lizard alien dreams!!

brennan's choice to bring the authors into neverafter is an interesting move -- on a basic, storytelling level, it adds another dimension to the cosmic horror elements already in place, which is useful primarily because brennan likes cosmic horror and tends to rely on it, so we have a lot of basis for comparison going forward. on another level, and one that i find more fruitful largely because it brings something very new and sharp to the story, is that we now have textual acknowledgement that these tales were recorded or written with authorial intent. we've yet to see if brennan will be invoking basile, perrault, the grimms, etc., but they are present in the text now and can be considered as much a part of the neverafter story as the characters themselves. all that said, i want to start thinking about what that authorial intent was, and how it has developed in our retelling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
much of the horror in neverafter is centered on pinocchio -- he is our most direct link to the stepmother, an entity that consumes other characters (notably, her own children and red's grandmother, and presumably snow white's stepmother) in order to achieve the same power as the authors. so we can demonstrate a link between authorial intent and parental authority, and we can assume that neverafter is interested in the intersections between parent and author as roles occupied in order to control characters or stories and their eventual outcome.
as a character, pinocchio is pinocchio, but acting on an archetypal level he is also the child: his original tale was inspired by and modeled after the "jack" tales, after all. there are two primary roles that the child can inhabit in fairy tales. the good child is rewarded, and the bad child is punished. as a character, pinocchio confuses these roles, and we can see why -- the original intent of his tale was not to reward him, and he was never supposed to become "good" and therefore "real." he was meant to die as a puppet. in nva4, pinocchio dies as a puppet. the dissonance of collodi's tale is recognized in the stepmother's promise to pinocchio, stating that she can make him real when it is impossible for him to be good.
in this, the stepmother takes on the role of both the blue fairy and geppetto in pinocchio's story. but those roles, as written by collodi, were never meant to be gentle -- the parent is not meant to be a source of care, or protection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
brennan is not collodi -- his concerns are less material, less related to the issues of class and poverty and survival present in collodi's tale -- but, consciously or not, he has drawn on the way the original story primes pinocchio to accept violence from parental figures and to understand their anger towards him as a function of a properly told story. in this instance, with the agency of a player behind him, he is able to develop new aims and defy his parental authority -- and we can see that the world of neverafter is unable to function properly when pinocchio cuts his strings and rejects his role as a servant to his father's wellbeing.
so, again, we see the stepmother taking on geppetto's role -- but what about the fairy? what about the fact that our pinocchio was introduced after the end of his tale, and what about the role the fairy has played until now? she was the one that killed him the first time, not the stepmother; she was the orchestrator of his moral adventure and, as neverafter so succinctly put it, the figure in control of whether or not pinocchio is "real."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
there has been a clear schism between the fairies and the stepmother in neverafter -- we can see that in the exchange between the stepmother and cinderella's fairy godmother, particularly the claim that "magic was never [the stepmother's], magic is [the fairies']!" but what the fairies seem to resent is the stepmother's authorial role, her ability to take stories and reshape them, rather than the character role she plays within the stories themselves.
additionally, there have been a lot of hints that this was a "good" world, and that there is something to return to, if the stories can be restored to their "real" versions. but by breaking down the original pinocchio tale through the lens of what has occurred in the neverafter, we can see that this corrupted version is not really so different -- the macro effect, the authorial intent through first the stepmother and then brennan himself, has clearly changed, but the effect on pinocchio as character and the child as archetype remains.
i take the introduction of the authors into the tale and the link drawn between them and the stepmother to be our first significant sign that things will not be able to return to the happily ever after -- our first real critique of the conditions of thought created and reinforced within fairy tales, and hopefully, a sign that brennan is questioning not the optimism of the fairy tale but the goals fairy tales set out to achieve.

Train fact: NAMED TRAINS!
So you've probably heard of the Flying Scotsman. Big green thing, turned 100 this year, probably the most famous locomotive in the UK, if not the world. Adapted into Thomas the Tank Engine with a whole lot of charisma and eyebrows. But did you know that name wasn't hers originally?
'The Flying Scotsman' is actually the name (formerly a nickname) of the train. The locomotive is Flying Scotsman's monster named for it. She was given the name in 1924, to help promote said service at the British Empire exhibition. Any engine, with any rack of coaches, or any train set, can be the Flying Scotsman.
Right now, it's run by LNER's new Azumas, which get a special little outfit about it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most of the named trains in the UK were phased out with steam (although you can still catch the Sheffield continental from Sheffield to St. Pancras, or the Northern Lights from King's Cross to Aberdeen, among a handfull of others) but they live on elsewhere.
Some are luxury touring trains, like Japan's Seven Stars in Kyushu (left) or South Africa's Blue Train (right).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Transport isn't really the goal here. They sell out months in advance and cost anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars, depending on the class of ticket you get. They're an Experience, and a very cushy experience at that. Just look at their interiors!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(yes, that's a piano)
But the vast majority of named trains in operation (as far as I can tell) are regularly-running exepress services across Asia.
Japan names their Shinkanens, India, Pakistan, Bengladesh & Sri Lanka often name their intercity expresses. These are practical, long-distance services, often named for monuments, like India's Ajanta Express, named for the Ajanta caves:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or their operating regions, like Sri Lanka's උත්තර දේවී | Princess/Queen of the North:
Tumblr media
Some North American countries also kept historic named routes, like Amtrak's Sunset Limited, or Canada's Ocean, which has operated continuously since 1904:
Tumblr media
but my personal favorite named services are Australia's historically-nicknamed "The Fish", named after one of its drivers:
Tumblr media
and the numerous trains that have been companion-nicknamed "The Chips" to match.

Aight, I'll ask. Monsters vs. Aliens with Megamind? If it's not too much trouble?
It's more of a fan theory than like a fic idea or anything, and I'm surely not the first person to mention this, but two other ppl asked about it so I digress --
Quick recap of the first couple minutes of Megamind: Megamind (and Metroman) were both shuttled off of dying planets by their parents a la Superman. Megamind was also given Minion, a fish with some kind of satellite implant, and told Minion would "take care of him".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Minion's existence here implies two things: one, that Megamind's planet hosted more species than just the blue humanoids Megamind is a member of; and two, that these species (as well as whatever other species existed with them) have a hierarchal relationship. Given that Megamind's planet is also very blue, and what little architecture we see is wide-open and curvilinear, we can also theorize a bit about Megamind's species being amphibious or semi-aquatic. Megamind's incredible intellect and predisposition to engineering also seems to have a precedent on his homeworld: a supercomputer and some out-of-focus machinery are shown in close proximity to baby Megs' crib, implying that his people were a highly industrial species relying on advanced technology.
Now consider Gallaxhar's design from Monsters vs. Aliens.
Tumblr media
Distended cranium, blue (indigo, but still) skin, purplish flush on his ears implying red blood and black eyebrows – all features Megamind's species has. He's even got the glittery white clothing and high collar that Megamind's parents wear. Now of course, Gallaxhar also has considerably different features – he's in the 7-8 foot range, his head is much taller than those of Megs' species, four eyes instead of two, and six tentacles instead of two legs. It's highly possible that hierarchal scale, larger craniums and extra limbs/eyes were prized features on Megamind's world – more brainpower and ability to multitask, which are both ideal in industrial cultures.
So extrapolating off of our theories on Megamind's planet, it's possible that Gallaxhar is of a species that dominated over Megamind's before their planet was destroyed.
Consider, further, this bit of Gallaxhar's backstory:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, Megs' planet was pulled into a black hole, it didn't have the relatively easier destruction of a core meltdown. But we're never given a good ceiling for the abilities at Gallaxhar's disposal, and "destroyed" could mean anything from "I caused a black hole to happen" to "I knew it was happening and decided not to warn anybody". (You could go with the latter option if you wanted the Superman callbacks in Megs' backstory to hold out.)
What does this mean for Megs? Personally I'm given to think the events of Monsters vs. Aliens happened before the events of Megamind, since MvA came out a year before. And Megamind seems to have eidetic (or at least very clear) memory of his homeworld – I wouldn't put it past him to have scrounged the wreckage of Gallaxhar's ship both for parts and for answers about himself.
Especially where his de-gun comes in. What is that blue glowing stuff it uses, anyway?
Tumblr media
Trace quantonium, perhaps?
Tumblr media
Other ideas for an actual crossover are as follows:
-A legal loophole of some sort prevents Area Fifty-Something from appropriating Megs and Minion since they were already in federal incarceration (The Metro City Prison warden and General Monger have had more than a few annoyed calls over the years)
-Roxanne and Derek are related (they have similar coloring, slim figures and squared-off jawlines. Derek is like, Roxie's cousin who's unashamedly trying to replicate her success) or they at the very least know of each other
-In the same vein of thinking, Roxie taking Susan out to lunch sometime
-Megamind & Dr. Cockroach team up (but quickly get more preoccupied with Minion becoming drinking buddies w the Missing Link)
-Somehow I want B.O.B. and Metroman to meet and B.O.B. fucking loves MM's music. They're himbo kings
-Also B.O.B. reading Hal to filth
-Again, I don't have like, actual fic ideas for this, but I do at some point want to draw Susan holding Megs in the palm of her hand because that would be incredibly cute.

so i know ed and stede's love languages have been discussed to death but i'm gonna do it too because imo many cakes isn't just about fic.
specifically, i want to talk about what i think their love languages are, and why they are what they are, and also why this supports the fact that stede and ed are more alike than they seem at face value.
but in order to do that, we'll also need to talk about violence.
so there's pretty much no question that ed's love language is physical touch. his first real contact with stede (y'know, besides when he was like 3/4 dead and barely conscious and looking like a drowned rat) was a gentle touch to the hand.
Tumblr media
he's constantly giving stede little reassuring touches, and just casual ones as well.
stede, on the other hand– i've seen people suggest that his love language is quality time based on the treasure hunt episode, but i disagree with this. he did that with the specific goal of impressing ed with an adventure, not just spending time with him.
no, i firmly believe that stede's love language is words of affirmation. he's always praising not only ed but also the crew with verbal reassurances.
Tumblr media
i mean, his main motto as a captain is "we talk it through as a crew." it's hard to be more clearly in favor of verbal support than that.
(this is mostly split for Very Long length but also consider this your content warning for discussion of stede and ed's childhood abuse a bit further down.)
we see both of these love languages at play from the moment they meet. in their very first conversation, when stede is feeling unsure of himself, ed gives him reassurance and– importantly– a few gentle touches, and stede responds with praise.
Tumblr media
and once they get to know each other better, they also start communicating in each other's love languages to show support and care.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so, we know their love languages. but why are these their love languages?
well, i'm far from the first to say it, but i think it's because of this.
Tumblr media
they use what they know.
when you've grown up in a culture of physical violence, bodily contact is what you learn how to utilize.
Tumblr media
and obviously being immersed in violence extends well beyond ed's childhood– it's present through his whole career in piracy– but that was where it took root.
and, likewise, if you've been raised in a world where violence is committed through words and not punches, then language is your most trusted weapon.
Tumblr media
and the same goes for this being a factor throughout all of stede's life, and from far more people than just his father.
but... stede doesn't use his words for violence. not usually, at least, and never with people he loves. he's passive aggressive with izzy, with the french aristocrats, and a bit with mary after he catches her with doug. but for the most part, he uses his words to show care and appreciation to his crew and to ed.
just like how we rarely see ed use actual physical violence. he certainly delegates it, but the most we see him commit by his own hand (in real time, not counting killing his father) is threaten a racist french captain, horse around with calico jack (who was raised in the same culture of violence as ed, i might add), and then what he does to lucius and izzy after he gives up hope of stede returning. like stede, we mostly see him use physical touch as a gesture of care and fondness.
they may have different love languages, but their love languages arise from the same source: the methods they were taught to harm people. one of the many things stede and ed have in common is that they both show the most support using the tools that they were always told can do the most damage. they've both reclaimed the languages of violence they grew up with-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-to use them for love.

introducing - our tonsi flag ( len sitelen pi kulupu tonsi ! ) 'tonsi' is a toki pona word that, roughly, means "a gender experience not fully described by 'mije' [man] or 'meli' [woman]." context + design explanation under the cut 🌈❤️
Tumblr media
🗣❗️ : toki pona is a minimalist conlang, which this post assumes very basic knowledge of. if youd like, u can read the wikipedia page (linked above), or this article from the atlantic, "Toki Pona: A Language With a Hundred Words."
some background on the creation of 'tonsi' - toki pona started development around 2001, and was 1st published in 2014, with 120 "canon" words - including the 2 gender words, meli & mije. however , toki pona is a living language, + words come about as the community needs them - the community came together to create 'tonsi' in a grassroots effort c. 2019 to fill a lexical gap that existed for describing ppl who fell outside the meli-mije duality.
etomologically, the word is from mandarin 同志 'tóngzhì' (meaning "comrade", & commonly used to mean gay / LGBTQ - though "tonsi" itself is generally agreed refer to gender.) some people use it exclusively to mean "nonbinary / genderqueer" , but expanded usage to also include all trans & gnc people (who choose to identify as tonsi) is very common, + is a definition i endorse ( & created the flag in mind with ! ) the word was officialized as an essential word in 2021 w./ the release of the toki pona dictionary
Tumblr media
the sitelen pona ( logographic / hieroglyph writing system ) glyph for 'tonsi'
as for the design & symbolism of the flag - the central blue symbol represents the sitelen pona glyph for tonsi (shown above), in the blue of the toki pona logo - the 3 segments (colored pink, green, and purple) were roughly inspired by colors on the trans, gq, & nonbinary flags - as a whole, the flag symbolizes the way the tonsi community unites people of all different gender experiences & primary-language terms.
toki pona philosophy is all about capturing universal concepts in a way that allows for clear and simple communication, and gender variance is absolutely a universal concept. tonsi is a beautiful + necessary word, & with this flag, i wanted 2 focus not on granular inclusions of which groups fall under tonsi , but rather the unity the term presents, and how it allows us to unite by what we have in common , rather than pick over the terminology we choose.
Tumblr media
a version of the tonsi flag made in a 16:9 aspect ratio 4 convenience
to my knowledge, no one else has made an effort 2 create a dedicated tonsi flag, but reception to having one has been positive thru the toki pona speakers ive shown the design - much thnx to the people on discord who gave their thoughts, as well as @epikulupu for consulting - sina ale li epiku mute a ❤️ ( ill also be posting a lili version of this post on r/tokipona soon + will add a link when i do 🌈 )
im passionate about toki pona + its community, + am an advanced speaker myself - if you have questions / comments , dm me, send an ask, or leave a reply - id always love 2 chat in/about toki pona 😁 if u.r interested in learning, i reccomend using this free course (lipu sona pona) & joining the discord , ma pona pi toki pona. as always, my flags are free to use, w./ credit appreciated but not required - stay pona ❤️

I know this has been posted about before, but I’m dying over Blizzard’s new “diversity space tool”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is actually the funniest and most tone-deaf thing I’ve seen in a while, and that’s really saying something, considering this is Blizzard!
Tumblr media
it kinda explains it on the page I linked, but I guess the point of this is to see how far they're deviating from the basic "straight white male" character type. but here's the thing...what exactly do these numbers mean?
like...why is “Egyptian” a seven? what makes it have that number? who decided that "Egyptian" is exactly seven steps away from whatever they think the "default" is, when it comes to nationality? and why are we still treating diversity like this in 2022??
and while we're here, can I see the other options under “Cognitive Ability” please? I feel like the wording they use would really help me understand this better.
and “Physical Ability”, too! what are the other Blizzard-approved disabilities? I need to know this, for science!
oh, and let's not forget gender! if "Woman" is a 5, does that mean "Man" is a 0? and what would a 10 be? I desperately need to know what would be considered a 10.
actually, could they just send me a download of this tool? I really want to know my own personal Blizzard Diversity Score™. I feel like that would help me.
god, this is just like those “Check Your Privilege!” quizzes from 10 years ago. reducing complex ideas down into simple numbers that can't ever show the full picture.
