the movie having the narrator trying to keep the car from crashing vs in the book he is actively trying to swerve the thing and kill them all... i think it's interesting, because it sets up this given, that in the movie, he wants to live. he is committed to wanting to live. he has so much less suicidal longing, i can think of several moments. this isn't necessarily good or bad, but i think it sets up some assumptions about his characterization that will differ if you rely more on the meat of one versus the other

The biggest thing I learned from Defunctland's video on the American Idol Experience is that the only thing in the world worse than being Ryan Seacrest is being the person specifically hired by Disney to remind people of Ryan Seacrest, all day, every day.
Think about that. Imagine THAT is your life. Your paid job is to remind bored, tired, financially-wiped families from Iowa that Ryan Seacrest is a thing, and that you are vaguely like him.
I once set up plastic fencing at a fairground with people on work-release, in 102 degree heat, and they "forgot" to tell us there were no bathrooms or access to water. And they made me drive all of us there. In my personal car. For no additional compensation. And I made like $8 an hour.
And I can say, with pride, "At least I didn't have to remind people of Ryan Seacrest at that Disney thing."
...This is really mean. I don't begrudge these people for taking a crap job. They're not the problem.
The problem is, and has always been, Ryan Seacrest.

Honestly, the more I think of Performance (spoiler warning), the more unreal that story is. You have the perfect setup for them to try and stage the play Romeo and Juliet like they did in Shakespeare's time (all male cast to play characters of both genders) but they went "nah, they're all girls now." Wataru plays like....4.5 characters and sometimes in the same scene. The line "the capulets' daughter has awakened to homosexuality." The fact that they really isekai-fied Shakespeare (that seems to be a thing in webtoons these days, too). They discuss religion and politics and social issues unironically but somehow also ridiculously. Tomoya openly falling for Hokuto's acting. Hokuto using Anzu as his standard of what a girl is supposed to be like and obliviously acting super shady (she's probably used to it? idk). Underage (still can't tell if it's staged or for real) drinking on stage. Breaking the fourth wall. Did I mention they made Romeo and Juliet an isekai?
And somehow, somehow. I am told this is one of the best event stories that dissect Wataru's character and personality underneath his 2937 layers of theatre masks. And in my "has not read Romeo and Juliet but has read other Shakespeare plays" opinion, they actually offer some legitimately solid analyses of the play (yes, from a more modern perspective rather than a new historicism approach but that's just literary theory for you).

" I didn’t tell him that I wished I’d never met Suzanne. That I wished I’d stayed safely in my bedroom in the dry hills near Petaluma, the bookshelves packed tight with the gold-foil spines of my childhood favorites. And I did wish that. But some nights, unable to sleep, I peeled an apple slowly at the sink, letting the curl lengthen under the glint of the knife. The house dark around me. Sometimes it didn’t feel like regret. It felt like a missing. "

watching Kaguya Love is War after a few episodes of Chainsaw Man. I wouldn't compare them in any other context, but it's interesting how you can tell when an adaptation is going to be stellar vs when it's going to be mostly mid from the very first episode. Adding texture, spices, meat to complement what was already a good dish vs "ah, yeah, looks just like the scene in the manga. The manga I've already read. It's like I'm reading the exact same thing except now there's sound." The voice acting choices alone say a lot.

What books owo
I reblogged the wrong volume, but I got volume 7 of Arina Tanemura's manga Idol Dreams. I'd been meaning to get it for a while but I didn't remember which volume I needed to get still (as in I didn't remember if I had bought 6)
I also got the box set of Tahereh Mafi's Shatter Me series as well as two of the novellas for the series (Find Me and Believe Me). I've actually read the first three books in the series (and own them oops) but I don't know where they are... I'd originally thought it to be just a trilogy but there were three more books in the series... I'll probably start at the beginning again, though.

Grabs you by the shoulders HUMMINGBIRD SALAMANDER BY JEFF VANDERMEER AND Y/N BY ESTHER YI ARE REALLY JUST THE SAME TYPE OF STORY IN DIFFERENT FONTS. THE RECKLESS AND RELENTLESS PURSUIT OF AN IDEAL, OF AN IDEA, OF A FRAGMENT OR A FIGMENT OF A PERSON WHO YOU SO EARNESTLY BELIEVE YOU KNOW. EVEN AS IT DESTROYS YOU. EVEN AS IT TEARS YOUR LIFE APART. AN ALMOST RELIGIOUS ZEAL FOR AN IDOL. THE SUDDEN DISAPPEARANCE OF THAT IDOL LEAVING MANY BROKEN OR OTHERWISE CHANGED IRREVERSIBLY. AN IMAGINATION OF AN IDYLLIC REALITY. UNRELIABILITY OF THOUGHT, OF MEMORY. A WOMAN REALIZING SHE NEVER LOVED THOSE WHO WERE CLOSE TO HER AS SOON AS SHE STARTS TO LOVE A CONCEPT. LOVING THE IDEA OF LOVING AN IDEA. DO YOU UNDERSTAND

Translation here
She pokes at me and then runs away
Can’t let go; she does it on and on and on
She calls me, and then turns away
They say she’s dangerous but I can’t hear them
Why are you doing this to me?
Why am I doing this to you?
The end of your words are vague
And my tears fall
I’m on my knees
And I’m ready to get hurt
You're looking at me, who came back
Can’t let go; I do this on and on and on
From your touch that held onto me
I don’t see a single trace of love anywhere
Your eyes change little by little,
The moonlight starts to vanish
As if everything is so fun for you,
As if you’re laughing at me
You get further away
Tears come to me again
I need therapy, la-la-la-la-la therapy
I knew it but I’ve fallen for you again;
I’m ready to get hurt
I’m a toy that’s made for you;
My life-line is always in danger
I’m nervous but I’m sure
That you will transfer to some other guy
Just play with me for sure, today
From head to toe, take all of me
Roughly play with me, then throw me away;
I’m all done getting ready to get hurt
Why are you only like this to me?
Why am I only like this to you?
Once again, you leave room,
you leave strange words
And I look at you as you take off
and I cry
I need therapy, la-la-la-la-la therapy
I'm waiting for you once again;
I’m ready to get hurt

Wayback when, when we were pretty much kids outselves, one of my mutual's kid siblings got a tumblr. And they were in a fandom that my mutual wasn't, and a different part of the fandom than I was in. And sometimes my mutual would reblog their posts, as a supportive older sibling should. So I saw that they felt very betrayed by a character, and half of their main ship, going evil. Eventually they wrote a breakup post between themself and the show, clearly they must go their own separate ways.
As I said, I wasn't in that part of the fandom. I assumed this character turning out to be a Nazi was like when Willow became a rapist — a horrific evil betrayal done for shock value multiple seasons into a show without regards to how, while the show was fantastical, that specific evil wasn't. A twist that wasn't introduced until much later, so much so that you could say "hey actually I don't think of those later seasons as canon because this character from seasons one and two would never be so horrible." Is it the most mature and nuanced way to criticize media? No, but it was a kid sibling and I feel like we've all been there at some point.
A few years later I watched the show. Y'all, the betrayal came in midway through the VERY FIRST SEASON. It was properly foreshadowes and everything. My beloved mutual's little sibling had fallen for the same facade the fictional characters had. Their interpretation of the character never existed. He was always a Nazi.
