John Murphy's luck as a stowaway runs out on March 11th 1812, when the ship's captain crashes it lured by what he thought were lyrical melodies, but Murphy recognized as piercing screeches.

Escaping on a rowboat, he finds himself chased by one of the creatures, who he sees observing him from the beach he managed to reach. Curious despite himself, he gets closer every day, sharing some of his food as simple self-preservation.

But he wonders if she only wants a meal, or intends to drag him down into the deep with her siren song and her kiss of death, like her kin did with his crew.
