okay so this is my absolute favourite medieval picture:
Tumblr media
it’s a wound man drawing from germany from around 1420 and i absolutely love it
Tumblr media
look at the guy’s face. he looks like he’s seen some shit. admittedly i’d probably feel the same way if i had a chunk of my skull missing but just look at it. like. im not sure what the artist was going for with the little circles (not the buboes thats kinda obvious) around his mouth? also not sure why there’s a cephalopod on his face but whatever i guess
Tumblr media
here things start to get a bit weird. im not sure why but the artist thought that humans had chicken things (yknow, the dangly things on a chicken’s face). it’s also fascinating to look at how they envisioned the anatomy of the body back then, like how they thought the stomach was a glorified bag. there’s also a chicken nugget with legs for some reason and i really have no idea what the artist was trying to do there. also kudos to the artist for putting the buboes in the right places! although i suppose at the time when this was drawn, they’d know all about the bubonic plague
also worthy of note is the fact that the lungs are drawn kinda accurately, suggesting that dissections at this point in time have discovered them. given that they’re not attached to the airways on this guy tho, its safe to assume that their purpose hasnt yet been discovered. i assume that’ll happen when all the surgeons decide to start vivisecting criminals, and that won’t be for another century
Tumblr media
another strange and glorious section, and probably the biggest juxtaposition of realistic biology and medievalism. i love this because it shows that doctors had come across the small intestines, kidneys, and what looks like the appendix during dissections, but they hadnt come across any other vital organs yet.
and for some reason theres a frog and a mini basilisk living in the intestines. im guessing this was either a way to explain stomach pains and the rumbles when hungry, or the artist got bored
Tumblr media
another bubo, again in the correct place. pretty much what id expect of 15th century europe. there’s also an chicken egg on this guy’s leg, possibly a leftover from the frog/toad and the basilisk in his intestines. he also seems to have smallpox down here and a key stuck in his leg. and of course there’s a spider, bc why not
Tumblr media
once again, im not entirely sure whats going on here. i guess he’s taken an arrow to the knee (heh) but he’s also got a lovely bullseye on the other so whoever fired at him has terrible aim. once again, not sure what the circles are. was the artist counting down his candle until he could go home and sleep? idk.
also, snek. or an leech about to do some bloodletting.
Tumblr media
and finally, this. there’s so much going on here, where do you even start?? for one, look at his fucking feet oh my god. i appreciate that the tiny puppy actually (kinda) looks like a puppy but oh my god the feet. no wonder the dog is biting him. he, the (also well done) scorpion, and the other basilisk are working together to bring them down. he’s got a giant fuckin splinter in his foot which makes me never want to step on the ground barefoot again and a nail in the other. like, dude, what did you do????
also i appreciate that the artist just gave up on colouring in the ground
