Theory regarding Kevin's 4th Letter
Tumblr media
TLDR:
Orpheus sent Kevin to drug contaminated racecourse
Kevin drugged in basement (like Alice) before able to leave
Both Kevin and Jose have strange headaches that go away soon before they're to leave
Kevin & Jose in Emma's 2nd game?
Alice went to the racecourse. Orpheus has her dig up the box/gem herself (while they not around). Soon after, she hallucinates Mary as Frederick, and shortly thereafter is knocked out (after something flies into her face).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kevin exits his game after drinking a drug. Orpheus later tasks him with “repairing the racecourse”. Once he’s finished, Orpheus holds a banquet for him, during which Kevin talks about his past. Orpheus presses him regarding whether Kevin remembers Angelina is alive or not. Following this, Kevin discusses having had frequent headaches, but they’ve gone away. He suspects the wine. Despite his headaches having gone away, he says “everything I said grew increasingly blurry in my mind”. In any case, he states he’s leaving “once I wake up in the morning”.
Tumblr media
The backstory for Kreiburg Racecourse explains that, on the opening day of Lily’s father’s “expensive new horse racing series”, Cyanus, the “White Steed of Death”, “went berserk and caused a trampling incident” (and potentially scaring other horses as a result). In Ashes of Memory part 1 it describes it as a “fatal stampede”. Before this, it was said Mary Kreiburg would pin a cornflower on Cyanus and the rider as a “victory blessing”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both Alice and Kevin go to the racecourse. If there were drugs somewhere at the racecourse, such as in the ground or in the cornflowers (or on/in the box potentially), to make Alice hallucinate, potentially set up purposefully by Orpheus, it’s possible Orpheus did the same thing to Kevin. No, Kevin doesn’t hallucinate, but we do see he’s having issues remembering. Maybe Orpheus just switched out the drugs he was using from Siren Song for Alice to Hydra or Mnemosyne for Kevin.
(I wonder then if Orpheus purposefully sent Kevin to the racecourse, knowing what would happen and/or to affect Kevin even more with the drugs over a longer period of time. I wonder if he sent anyone else that escaped their game to do this before they could leave to do the same to them.)
While comparing Alice and Kevin, Kevin says he plans to leave in the morning, but there’s no proof that this is exactly what happened.
Alice was knocked out twice (likely both times by Orpheus), and after the 2nd time she was sent to the secret basement and given Hydra. It’s possible something similar happened to Kevin. Potentially either he was knocked out before he could leave or was taken while he was out (potentially drugged to ensure he stayed asleep, likely with the Orpheus coma drug) and sent to the basement at the point. Once there, Orpheus could either give him Mnemosyne to forget what’s happened during the game and/or Hydra to reconstruct his memory to make him think Angelina is alive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We already know Orpheus is quite interested in messing with Kevin’s memories to make him think she’s alive, to the point Kevin says Orpheus “ignored my unhappy silence and pried, trying to force an answer out of me. Shattered glasses, overturned silverware, shaking figures... It wasn't until I expressed my desire to leave that he realized how rude he'd been. After repeated apologies, he returned to his polite self, then nodded with satisfaction and went on listening to the story”. Considering that sort of reaction, it would be easy to believe Orpheus isn’t ready to let go of Kevin yet, and thus would be interested in reusing him in his experiments.
Now I want to go back to Kevin mentioning his headaches. Right after this he says “everything I said grew increasingly blurry in my mind”. Oracle from the 2nd anniversary did have some side effects beyond the main one (namely dizziness, and the manor owner said he wanted to work on eliminating those side effects). And even though it’s not part of the main story, the Eternal Beauty and Delphi drugs from Truth & Inference that are described in the Zinaida anniversary event seem to clearly be meant to parallel or at least relate to Orpheus’ drugs from the main story, and these 2 drugs were described to have side effects (this time hallucinations and drowsiness). So I think it’s likely Orpheus drugs also had side effects, some of which could include “headaches”, while another drug could cure the headaches but at the same time cause his memories to blur.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Actually, the Oracle drug would fit here. If the food at the banquet Orpheus provided had Oracle, while Kevin ate it, there’d be no effects, but once he stopped taking Oracle, he would forget everything that happened while he had been taking Oracle. Only issue is Netease seems to have replaced Oracle with the 4 drugs we know of from the Time of Reunion drug list (Orpheus, Mnemosyne, Siren Song, and Hydra). But who knows. Maybe one of them does something similar (or they could work in Oracle somehow). Anyways.
Speaking of Kevin’s headaches, I happened to notice that Jose actually describes something similar happening to him. In Jose’s 4th letter, he talks about waking up with “another splitting headache”, which implies he’s had more than one headache. His headache though seems to have been “alleviated” once he found the umbrella.
Tumblr media
In the letter it states “’You can take everything you find there.’ At least this time, the voice in my head isn't just full of lies”. It’s possible Orpheus was the one to tell Jose this. Jose then says he plans to leave soon.
It’s curious both Jose and Kevin complain of headaches, both after they leave the game, but then the headache goes away soon after they complete their tasks (Kevin fixing the racecourse, Jose finding the umbrella) and soon before they are to leave. Not to mention Orpheus seems to have likely been involved with both.
Kevin we know Orpheus is interested in to make him think Angelina is alive.
Jose we know is someone Orpheus “treasured the opportunity to use”, to the point he considered suspending the experiment when Jose’s mental state seemed to deteriorate too much, and calls Jose a “’gift’ from a friend who passed away”.
Tumblr media
Orpheus was the one to throw Kevin the banquet before Kevin leaves, and Jose Orpheus may have told Jose to go to the room he found the umbrella in and that he could take whatever he found.
Either potentially could’ve been drugged before they could actually leave, so Orpheus could ensure he could reuse them in his experiments.
Kevin potentially could’ve been exposed to drugs while at the racecourse, as well as potentially in the food Orpheus gave him during the banquet. Jose could’ve also been subjected to drugs, potentially in the breakfast he ate before leaving, or potentially somewhere in the room he found the umbrella in (what if the umbrella itself had been sabotaged or contaminated with drugs?)
Considering the umbrella is still at the manor when Alice is there, we know something happened to Jose. And if something happened to him when he thought he was able and ready to leave, something similar could’ve happened to Kevin.
Tumblr media
If anything, there is Emma’s 2nd game. After she escapes from Arms Factory, we know she was put with another group of people. These “new friends” had “warned me in secret to keep a record of everything, just in case my memories would start to deceive me. They said their memories were like children’s jigsaw puzzles, and there were gaps and parts that did not fit”. This comment tells us that the others Emma is with have had their memories tampered with. They have forgotten some things, meaning Mnemosyne is likely to blame, while other parts “did not fit”, implying Hydra is likely the cause.
Tumblr media
We know both Kevin and Jose have memory issues. Kevin is the most obvious, though Jose we know has seemingly forgotten parts of his game, considering he doesn’t seem to remember what happened to the others in his game (Edgar and Vera at least). There’s also how he describes seeing the umbrella “for the very first time” in the greenhouse, even though we know the umbrella was at Lakeside during his game.
At least for this latter issue, it is possible that Jose went to the ship where the umbrella was at and didn’t actually see the umbrella while he was there. Wu Chang’s 3rd letter states Jose noticed an “abnormal watermark”, but never specifically says he saw the umbrella. We know Patricia describes Jose as a “psychic medium” so it’s possible Jose at that point forgot everything, but it’s hard to say.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In any case, the point is it’s possible Kevin and Jose could’ve been some of Emma’s “new friends” in her new game/group. That then just leaves what happened to them and Emma afterwards, by the end of that game.
(This is honestly less of a complete theory and more I just started writing this because I noticed some curious similarities I couldn’t let go of while rereading stuff, even though I didn’t quite know what everything may mean yet due to a lack of info at this time)
(Though it’s possible something else happened to Jose.
It’s possible he disappeared similar to those in game 6 considering Jose’s 4th letter being wet and the parallels/implications from the Christmas event and his skin)
(It’s also possible whatever happened to him during the game happened again considering the heavy rain/storm and how this affects the umbrella/magnetic fields, and we know from Wu Chang’s 3rd letter this did affect Jose, and it ties to his Bobolink skin)
(So for all we know Jose just disappeared, just without the umbrella. Or maybe he is with Kevin in Emma’s 2nd game. For now all I can do is suggest possibilities. Hopefully we get more answers soon)

Hello !! Ur writing is so great, so I wanted to ask if I could get ❛ missed my touch that much, did you? ❜ with Jose (he deserves more recognition) ?
Tbh i have no idea who he is lol ive only seen him once but it was coa first officer lol
Rated Mature | Warning: bittersweet
Tumblr media
“Missed my touch that much, did you?”
Maybe you did, maybe you missed him, maybe you felt lonely while he was away at sea. However, you smile caressing his cheek, “You do know I have many men who help keep me busy.” Jose should know better to give his heart to someone like you. You who dances in the night satisfying all those lonely souls.
A prostitute, well take care of one too. High demands means better living, and if you are happy then your clients are happy.
“I can take you away from here. Settle down anywhere you like.”
“Love, your calling is the sea. I won't compete against your real mistress,” You lounge in your nest of pillows on your bed, he sits at the edge of the bed close to you. “Settling down would make you my Ulysses to my Calypso.” It goes unsaid that he leaves the woman in the end to return home.
“You are my Penelope. I will always find a way back to you.”
You laugh as you sit to hug him from behind, “Jose,” Closing your eyes as you unintentionally stolen his heart, a piece of it that yearns to return and stay with you. You wish you could believe he would be happy but the regret will set in. You have enough of the Sea's lovers to know the secrets of their hearts. They miss their harsh mistress. “Make love to me but you will have to leave in the morning.” Because tomorrow he will go back on that boat, he will once again be a First Officer, and once more the sea has her leash on him.

Wu Chang's 2023 Character Day Letter Analysis (+ Qi Shiyi Analysis)
Letter Summary (Short)
Jose's father performs trades for others with some of his cargo as collateral
Umbrella eventually sold to Qi Shiyi
Theories
Jose's father, Joaquin Baden, is performing trades in the Mediterranean Sea, with some of his cargo (including the umbrella, with the receipt signed by "Bourbon", who's likely Sam) as collateral.
Based on the umbrella's involvement and the fact their voyage will take them to a new "specified area" of the Mediterranean, this should take place during Jose's 1st letter. The voyage Joaquin never returns from.
Tumblr media
Based on the reference to the "Bourbon" signature and "list of goods", this should connect directly to Jose's 2nd letter. The "signature on my father's ledger of goods". This means that the "ledger of goods" Jose saw belonged to Joaquin's ship, which we know was called the "Parthenope" from Jose's 1st letter, from the voyage his father disappeared from.
Also, the fact Jose in his 2nd letter says he's seen this handwriting "once before" makes it sound like Sam was only involved with the Badens on this 1 voyage (aka, he doesn't regularly work with them).
Tumblr media
Based on how it says "again", it seems they've sailed to the Mediterranean Sea to perform these trades before (they just go to different areas of it each time), meaning this is likely not the 1st time they've done this.
Could this be the "special missions" assigned to the Baden family by the royal family in Jose's deduction 5?
Tumblr media
If so, is Villhelm Lamb potentially connected to the royal family?
It doesn't say what Joaquin earned as part of performing this trade. Yes, he gets his cargo labeled as collateral back, but what did he get in return? Money? Or was it just one of his tasks in service to the royal navy?
“Villhelm” relates to the Old German name William apparently, and can have meanings including “protector”. Lamb is explanatory enough.
I do wonder if it’s possible Villhelm Lamb could be the manor owner (aka, he used a fake name). It could be a real person and not a fake name, but like I said, it’s just something I wonder.
If it is a fake name, we know it can’t be Sam (or Demi) based on the “Bourbon” signature. Sam we know is a “colleague” of the manor owner based on Demi’s 3rd letter, and it was confirmed in Demi’s release backstory that Sam did go to the manor (specifically, it says he was “offered a job as a bartender” but it’s likely this wasn’t the complete truth considering what we know he worked on while there based on Demi’s 3rd letter).
Tumblr media
We know Sam’s “masterpiece”, which the manor owner also refers to as a “drug” and “reagent”, used the same “raw materials” as the manor owner’s, likely referring to the fern known as “Delphi” based on Vera’s 4th letter.
Tumblr media
We know the materials the owner used were supplied to him via the 2nd anniversary package (which says “new specimens arrived”, “before the next restock”, and “I must find someone else to help me supply”). Demi’s 1st letter talks having “extracted 9 samples from the things they brought back from the Mediterranean Sea”. Considering what we know Joaquin was doing in the Mediterranean, these “things” likely came from the Badens, and may have been the “Delphi” ferns.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of this is why I do wonder if Orpheus could’ve been Villhelm Lamb.
If anything, the meaning of the name Villhelm, “protector”, relates to what Alice says Orpheus promised her in the 2nd anniversary package “…person who promised to protect me forever”. (Orpheus’ S-tier, Hollow, in his design notes even mentions “he once thought he could use his way to protect his island, everything he loves”).
Tumblr media
Going even further, “Lamb” ties to Alice based on her Source of Evil, who’s description even says “Perhaps ‘purity’ is merely the lamb’s disguise – it’s in truth the origin of all sins and the source of evil thoughts”, while her design notes even say “the little girl is the lamb”.
Tumblr media
Ergo, maybe Orpheus chose the name “Villhelm Lamb” as a nod to him protecting Alice.
With how it says “the Promisee shall put up a shipment of goods as collateral”, it sounds like it was Joaquin (or maybe Sam, who seems to be the one inspecting the goods?) chose to offer the umbrella as collateral. Was it because they didn’t think it valuable?
Moving on to Qi Shiyi, it seems like “Legwraps Huang” (in the Chinese version, the line here is “脛巾の黄三児より” had his friend Chang Chip (though earlier it said the “last word has been altered many time”) meet him at a harbor about the umbrella he that came into his “possession”. According to Legwraps Huang, he acquired it from a “friend working on a foreigner’s fleet”. The umbrella should be the same one Joaquin put up as collateral, Wu Chang’s, while the “foreigner’s fleet” should be the Baden’s.
It is unknown who this “friend” is, but there is something interesting about “Chang Chip”, especially after Legwraps Huang comments “Do you remember boarding that huge ship together back then?”. What’s interesting is that “Chang Chip” was the name of 1 of the 6 Chinese survivors of the sinking of the Titanic (there were 8 Chinese passengers in the third-class cabins on the titanic total). The other 5 were Lee Bing, Fang Lang, Ah Lam, Cheong Foo, and Ling Hee (the 2 that died were Len Lam and Lee Ling). These 6 eventually arrived in the UK to support the sailor shortage during World War I. Chang Chip apparently grew ill and eventually died 2 years later due to pneumonia.
Tumblr media
I find this especially interesting as Demi’s 2nd letter is apparently written “on the Back of an Old Ferry Ticket”. This “ferry ticket was for a trip from Southampton to New York. It had not been used”. Southampton to New York was the route the Titanic took the day it sank. Considering Legwraps Huang describes the boat as “huge”, it seems fairly certain the boat is meant to parallel the Titanic. Though the Titanic sailed in 1912, which is a few too many years ahead of what the time period of the game currently, which is still sometime before 1900, at least until/after the Final Game.
Tumblr media
Considering Huang describes Chang Chip as “wearing one of those jackets made by foreigners”, this seems to fit with what we know from history about them going to the UK and becoming sailors.
As such, it’s likely that Legwraps Huang is meant to be 1 of the 5 other Titanic Survivors (excluding Chang Chip).
Even though Sam didn’t board that ship, maybe Sam and Huang somehow did know each other, for Sam to be the “friend” Huang got the umbrella from. I mean, Sam’s signature as well as the umbrella were “circled” according to Wu Chang’s letter, so maybe it’s possible.
I have 1 other idea. Based on the letter, it’s likely that Legwraps Huang got the umbrella when Joaquin failed to fulfill the task with the required items, at which point Villhelm Lamb may have given away or sold the shipment of goods left to him as collateral by Joaquin. In which case, Villhelm Lamb may be the “friend” Legwraps Huang referenced. And technically, this idea and the theory Villhelm Lamb could be Orpheus aren’t mutually exclusive, as the manor owner (if he is Villhelm Lamb) could’ve sold the umbrella as he also didn’t see it as something valuable (and if he really is in debt to Count Barriere and then Lily, he might need the money anyways).
If Joaquin and the Parthenope did sink while attempting to retrieve “the goods from the specified area in the Mediterranean Sea”, that would also imply their wreck was likely in the Mediterranean. In that case, that means the wreck at Lakeside Village (which we know has to belong to Jose’s father based on what can be found in the ship: https://twitter.com/SirenJose/status/1558166028022173696?s=20) likely wasn’t the wreck from Joaquin’s disappearance.
Though that does mean it could’ve been their wreck from the “nightmarish waters” incident, when they sailed through the area marked as “dangerous” to avoid a storm and any “delay[s]” (if most of the crew perished according to Jose’s deductions and it took 2 months before they could sail home, especially if the waters are described as “nightmarish” and “dangerous”, it is highly likely they did shipwreck).
Tumblr media
The large shipwreck at Lakeside is referenced in several letters, including when Volcker went there to investigate, and in another letter that mentions an old man is living in the shipwreck. This means the shipwreck is from before the Lakeside villagers disappeared, and could’ve potentially been there for a long while, which would fit if it was from the wreck right before the DeRoss tragedy (https://twitter.com/SirenJose/status/1682410040664244224).
Another important point is that, if the umbrella was being used as “collateral” and would only be returned if Joaquin provided the goods desired from the specified area, that means the “them” that the “cannons couldn’t kill” wasn’t Wu Chang. The umbrella wouldn’t have even been on board the ship when it sank, instead being held by Villhelm Lamb for at the time. If the umbrella wasn’t on board, it means they couldn’t have been behind whatever the crew were trying to kill. It’s still possible due to possessing the umbrella at all that the were the victims of the umbrella’s misfortune, even though it wasn’t with them at that time.
It still seems like if the crew were trying to kill something with cannons, but failing, that may mean they were hallucinating. If Wu Chang wasn’t behind the hallucinations, what then? Well, we are aware of something that can cause hallucinations, something the manor owner himself created, who may have even been the “Villhelm Lamb” who requested Joaquin and his crew go to the specified location.
Tumblr media
Even if the owner isn’t Villhelm Lamb, we do know Sam, who was the one to actually sign the “ledger of goods” for Joaquin’s ship that day, does work for the owner. And in Demi’s 2nd letter does say “Despite our many attempts, the new mice all died in fear with no exception”. “New” would fit with the idea Sam was only involved with the Badens this one time (based on Jose saying he’s only seen the handwriting once before). “Mice” could just be a way to refer to test subjects, and we already know the manor owner and Sam have both performed experiments for their drugs on people. The manor owner experimented with all the participants of his game. With Sam, he at least tested on Demi’s mother based on him commenting on Demi having the “same curious drug resistance as her crazy mother”. There’s also how Demi’s deductions reference him having “observation diar[ies]”, not to mention if Dovlin was the drug he was trying to perfect, and we know he’s let others at their bar have the drink, but not Demi interestingly (suspiciously), he may have also used the customers of their bar as test subjects. That may have been why, when it wasn’t working well enough, he had to go to the manor. Finally, the part about the “mice all died in fear with no exception” could relate to how we know the crew were freaked out about some “them” that they tried (and failed) to kill with the cannons, with the part about all dying “with no exception” can connect to how, unlike the “nightmarish waters” incident, the entire crew “with[out] exception” died this time.
Tumblr media
Aka, the manor owner or Sam are possibly the reason for Jose’s father’s disappearance. Or both considering Demi’s 2nd letter references “start[ing] the game immediately” aka the manor owner’s games as we know Sam was the manor owner’s “colleague”. If Joaquin really was involved in the DeRoss tragedy, it’s possible Orpheus chose them as the “mice” as part of his revenge. Though Sam does say “this is clearly not what he expected to see”, but that could simply refer to them all dying, but not necessarily that he didn’t want to make them hallucinate or suffer. He may have not expected it simply because he wanted to continue to use them for more experiments, like he does for the participants of his games, who he is willing to reuse in multiple rounds or experiments.
We see that Chang Chip eventually sells the umbrella, as well as his store, to Qi Shiyi. The umbrella is specified to be sold at a “discounted price”, which sounds like Chang Chip wanted to get the umbrella off his hands and away quickly. This may mean he was a victim of the bad luck that seems to follow that umbrella (which would semi parallel the real Chang Chip’s fate).
As for the addresses, we can actually find these locations in the in-game Chinatown map.
“Blessed Luck, Ramyhurst Street”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We know this is the location of Chang Chip’s, and later Qi Shiyi’s, store based on the sign (you can check the Chinese version of Wu Chang’s letter to confirm).
Tumblr media
“Royal Scenery, Ramyhurst Street”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We know this is the other location, “Royal Scenery”, due to connecting it to Chinatown’s backstory. In it, we see that Lin Jingfu is the owner of Yujing Pavilion (aka 御景轩, the same name used in the Chinese version of the letter). The backstory talks about him excelling at making clay sculptures, and his art was so popular he was always in short supply. Lin Jingfu we know is who Qi Shiyi is staying with, as he is a “distant relative” of Qi’s “Uncle Lin” aka “Lin Congbin” and Qi is sent to him when Lin Congbin dies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We know from this deduction that Lin Jingfu is pressured (potentially by his family or wife) to “kick her out”. Qi becomes an assassin to earn some money and ensure she doesn’t starve (she is described as a “motherless beggar” in her deduction 7), potentially for Tang Jiashi considering how the Tang family businesses have been closing in Qi’s last deduction, as well as how Qi talks about Tang Jiashi not being able to get in touch with her, or maybe someone else if not Tang Jiashi. That’s why Qi’s deduction 8 says “many wealthy businessmen in the city were found dead. It’s a suspected case of hired killings due to unethical business practice”. It fits considering we already know Qi’s design notes say she studied “martial arts... to survive and get revenge”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Earning money in this way is likely how she was able to eventually earn enough to buy Chang Chip’s antique shop, which again matches with how her design notes says she “[fled] the country, even crossing the ocean, before finally living among ordinary people as an antique dealer”.
Tumblr media
This here may be the part in Qi Shiyi’s story where she attempted to “rid her hands of the stains that plagued them and attempt a new life as an ordinary person”. This means she likely stopped performing assassinations and sought to go clean and earn whatever she needed from her new antique shop. Considering her parents were described as “scholars”, so maybe being the owner of an antique shop was in some way related to what her family used to do, which could’ve been why she was willing to attempt to be an “ordinary person” and “rid her hands of the stains that plagued them” (aka, stopping all her assassination attempts and revenge).
Tumblr media
Considering the mention of “Xie” in her deduction 2, it’s possible Qi’s family, the Xiao family, knew or were friends with the Xie family. If it is the same “Xie” as Xie Bi’an, considering Wu Chang’s backstory states how “people believed that Xie Bi’an (White Guard) resided in the umbrella”, it’s possible that his family kept the umbrella as a keepsake (or relic of the deceased). At least until the 2 families were executed for “colluding, conspiring to rebel, sowing discord among the people, and seeking to do harm to the government”. Whether or not they actually did what they were accused of, we don’t know for sure. They could’ve been innocent (maybe similar to Wu Chang in his backstory), or maybe they weren’t. All we have is that Qi Shiyi’s backstory says “the Xiao family's decision to shut out the outside world was the reason for their downfall”. After they were killed, she was taken in by Lin Congbin “an old servant of the Xiao family who’d returned home from an illness… The two of them were destitute like beggars”. Qi attempts to get revenge via assassination (on the emperor potentially), but only his “double” actually died. It is then that she is forced to flee, after which she’s taken in by Lin Jingfu and everything we’ve already discussed.
Tumblr media
Going back to her trying to live like an “ordinary person”, we know however that peace didn’t last forever for her, as “that manor decided to steal away the most important person in her life...”. The person that was “[stolen] away” was likely Tang Si from Qi’s deduction 10, who she potentially befriended, as Qi’s backstory trailer says “And for her safe return”. Qi goes to the manor to retrieve Tang Si (we have no way to know right now how she ended up there), and this is likely how Wu Chang’s umbrella ended up at the manor before Jose arrived.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Therefore, based on this, it’s possible that Qi Shiyi was in an earlier game before Jose, potentially Game 1 (after Game 0) as that is the 1 game before Jose’s (game 5) that we have no knowledge of any of the participants (though I do wonder if Lily could also be in game 1 as she is tied to Galatea, from game 0, and she may want Orpheus to pay his debt to help Simon, and Orpheus does also appear in game 0, so maybe game 1 could make some sense for her if not the final game).

(っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ i'm still here (jose baden x reader) ♥
hi! i took this oneshot from the book i have published on wattpad, i figured the jose enjoyers here on tumblr could also enjoy it as well <3
reader's gender/pronouns: non-specified (any pronouns/any gender orientation)
genre type: angst & fluff (hurt/comfort)
☁☁☁
You hummed softly to yourself, content as you strode the halls of the Oletus Manor. It was a beautiful moonlit night, one you planned on spending outside in the garden. That was your plan, anyway. Your boyfriend was off drinking with some of his companions; you were sure you were going to have to make sure Jose got back to his room. He'd be stone cold drunk by the time the night was over - that much you were sure about. Humming to yourself, you headed towards the garden doors, pushing it open delicately before entering, planning on getting your hands dirty and making sure those flowers were growing well! Well, you knew Emma was taking good care of the garden when you weren't in it, but nevertheless, you wanted to be as helpful as you possibly could. As much as you loved your first officer, you were not fond of alcohol, and drinking with him would not be an option for you. In fact, you much preferred taking care of him - as much as you didn't like how drunk he could get. After all, alcohol negatively impacted the liver, which could make Jose really sick, something you were worried about. However, this manor's magic was incredibly strange, and no matter how much Jose seemed to drink, Emily concurred he was in perfectly good condition. It made you wonder how the magic worked in this damned place, but you weren't complaining, not when it had been so helpful in keeping your boyfriend safe and healthy. Still, too much of something was no good, especially something that was so strong.
You headed towards the mahogany colored gardening closet, delicate hands grabbing a pair of heavy duty gardening gloves before slipping them onto your hands. The garden had a see-through roof, and you could look up and see the beautiful full moon standing above you, high and mighty, as it should be. Your teeth gleamed with joy, inhaling deeply before exhaling. Ah, the smell of dirt was one of your favorite scents - it was just so relaxing. The smell of earth was so relaxing, more specifically. Nowadays, you appreciated that the manor baron extended the boundaries one could go away from the manor, so you were left relishing in the long hikes around the area, mapping it out every time. It may have been the same land layout each time, but you never got tired of it. Stretching your arms out, you turned to gaze at the garden. What could you do on this lovely night? What did the garden need tending to? You could water the plants, as they didn't seem like they had been watered yet. Humming contently, you grabbed the water can before bringing it over to the hose, wincing at how heavy the can was, but nevertheless carrying it to the hose and attaching the end of the hose to it, filling the can up until it was full with water. Picking up the heavy aquamarine can, you began to water the flowers, the silence being rather comforting. In the distance, you were sure you could hear the birds chirping and chattering on this gorgeous night. In a way, you wished you could have spent it with Jose, but you were glad he was spending time with friends. Friends were important, too! Just because someone had a partner didn't make their friends and family any less important.
"Hello, (Y/N)!" you recognized the bright and fuzzy voice of the gardener, and smiled, (E/C) eyes lighting up in delight as you turned your head. You watched the tall, light brown haired woman walk in, skipping her way to you and looking at you with her bright green orbs. "What're you up to?"
"Ah, watering the plants," you responded, resisting the urge to give a sarcastic reply. You knew Emma always meant well, and she wasn't always the most observant, so you were happy to give a reply to the gardener. "Have you come to do some work in the garden, too?"
"I am! I might plant some morning glories! We just got a shipment of them the other day thanks to my father," the gardener began, "would you like to plant the seeds with me? They won't blossom for a little while, though."
"Oh! I'd love to," you beamed, eagerly nodding your head in delight.
"Let me go grab some gloves, then!" Emma piped cheerfully, skipping over to the closet. You watched with a lopsided smile on your face. Sometimes, you wished you had her energy, but a lot of the times, you were just tired and drained. Luckily, this was one of the times you had some energy to do something, so all was well. You were hoping it would last throughout your time planting the flowers with your beloved friend; Emma seemed quite excited to plant them with you.
"(Y/N)! (Y/N)!" a voice exclaimed, one you recognized well enough by now. The urgency in the voice left you frantically panicking internally over what it could be, jumping and turning to face the person who barged into the doorway. It was Martha, the coordinator wide-eyed with her lips curved in a frown. "You gotta come with me, quick!" She shouted after nearly torpedoing into you, grabbing your wrist. Emma and you exchanged looks, and you gave her an apologetic smile, but she smiled brightly, nodding her head in it being okay. With that, you allowed Martha to practically drag you out of the garden, frowning and taking this seriously.
"What's wrong, Martha?" you questioned, astonished you could keep your voice steady with how much she was dragging you, nearly causing you to fall over once or twice.
"It's Jose!" the moment those words left the coordinator's lips, you were sure you felt your blood run cold, (E/C) eyes widening as you swallowed tightly. You didn't like the sound of that, and you were sure you could hear your pulse quicken in your ears. You were pulled quickly into the living room, and your eyes widened to see Jose on the floor, hands on the ground to keep himself up off the floor. Naib and Kevin were at his sides, and all you could hear was Jose's agonizing screams.
"(Y/N)...! (Y/N)...!" Jose's voice was slurred, hoarse from screaming, and clearly expressing how drunk he really was, but it didn't make your heart hurt any less. "I couldn't...! My love... is dead... I couldn't... save...!" Jose hiccuped, and you were sure your chest was aching now. You pulled yourself from Martha's grasp, tossing the gardening gloves off and nearly stumbling with how fast you ran to his side, Naib making room for you next to him.
"Jose...? Jose...!" you placed your hands on his shoulder gently, watching your strong man crumble underneath your touch, flinching.
"Dead...! Dead...! Dead, dead, dead...! It's all my fault...!" Jose's voice was strained, hands shifting to cover his head as his forehead pressed against the cold marble ground. Your hands were starting to tremble, and you quickly looked up at Naib, Martha, Kevin, and all of the others involved. Gulping down your saliva, you quickly decided that you needed to do something. Giving a head nod to Kevin, you carefully hoisted Jose to his feet with as much strength as you had (in the end, needing the cowboy's help).
"Come on now, (Y/N)'s alive and well," Kevin tried to reassure, turning to you and whispering, "we've been trying... so tell him that but he's so... out of it... maybe having him drink when he's sad isn't a good idea..." You shifted to wrap one of Jose's arms around you, nodding your head to the others before hoisting Jose off to his room, despite his weak struggles to pull away from you.
"No...! My (Y/N)... I need-" Jose stumbled, hanging his head with his eyes closed tightly, face tear-ridden. It ached you to see your boyfriend this way, and you clutched your eyes tightly for a moment, before looking and walking. You wanted to say something, but now wasn't the time, you were sure. Jose's wailing probably got the attention of even the hunters on the other side of the damned manor, and you were sure that if Jose was sober right now, he would consider himself ashamed. Only you were allowed to see his weakness and see through his weak states... everyone else just saw the care-free and easy going first officer. You saw the man for what he was under the surface - he was frail. Low self esteem paired with heavy abandonment issues and an even more intense fear of losing the ones he loved, well, that man was in shambles, and only you could really see all the pieces of glass that shattered from him like a mirror. You were as quick as you could, bringing him towards his bedroom. Once you had the key in hand, you unlocked it before entering inside, his room a mess like always as you placed him down on the bed gently. You went to lock the door and close it so no one barged in at the wrong time, putting Jose's key on the dresser near the door before going to bed. "My (Y/N)..." your name left his lips in absolute agony, tearing your heart right from its ribcage and stomping on it before putting it back. You swallowed tightly, looking at Jose.
"Jose... I'm not... I'm not dead," you said, voice straining as you placed your hands on his - both his metal hand and his human hand. "Can't you feel my warmth...? I'm right here." You whispered delicately, hoping your words would snap Jose from his frenzy. The sniffling Jose paused, looking at you with pained eyes.
"I'm so... drunk... h-how do I know... i-if your warmth is real...?" Jose whispered, shuddering as his heart felt like it was aching. You gulped. What were you supposed to say? What if what you wanted to say didn't work? You felt your heart race so violently inside your ribcage, and you resorted to hugging him tightly, burying your face into his shoulder as you choked down your own tears.
"... I'm still... I'm still here, Jose... you've never failed to protect me, not even once," you punctuated your words in hopes that it would get through to Jose, and your chest tightened. "You always make sure to keep me safe and you've always done so good at it... you're never going to fail to save my life and I'm never going anywhere, alright? I'm still here...!" You raised your voice, choking out a sob as you clutched onto the back of his clothing tightly, eyes closed tightly with your heart aching. You hoped your words could pull your boyfriend from his episode, but you remained as calm as you could with your hands trembling. Jose's tear-ridden dual colored eyes looked at you, as though you were a stranger at first, swallowing tightly. You watched his adam's apple bob, leaving you inhaling and exhaling quietly. Your chest ached and you found your hands becoming clammy at the fear Jose would've really thought you were dead. Slowly, you brought Jose's hands to your cheeks, and gave him a warm smile as tears dribbled down the corners of your eyes. "I'm okay, Jose, I'm okay." The first officer looked you over with wild and fear-filled eyes. His thumbs caressed your skin, only one being able to feel your soft skin. You hummed contently at his touch, melting to it. You kept your (E/C) eyes opened as you gazed into Jose's eyes, hoping to see some relief wash in them soon.
"(Y/N)..." Jose murmured your name delicately, quickly throwing his arms around you and burying his head into your shoulder, sobbing away. "My... my precious... you are okay..." Jose's voice was uneasy at first, and he reeked of pure alcohol. You swallowed down the urge to gag at the strong smell, mind tracing back to Kevin's words. Drinking while sad... was Jose sad? He seemed fine when you left him before... maybe something came up you weren't aware about - or maybe this fear was what was eating Jose away.
"Yes... I'm still here, Jose... I'm okay," you whispered, delicately running your fingers through his somewhat long brown hair. Jose's breathing was steadying and his sobs became quieter as you held him closer, knowing that in the morning, he'd wake up with a massive headache from both the crying and the alcohol he induced. Your words meant the world to him, and to your relief, you were able to settle him down quite quickly, relaxing him and consoling him to the best of your ability - which to your relief, was enough to help him through this.
"I-I didn't *hiccup* fail to save you...?" Jose whispered. You weren't sure what you needed saving from, but you smiled and shook your head.
"No Jose, you didn't fail to save me. In fact, you're always the best at protecting me," you shifted your hand to his shoes, having to lean down to do so, and removed them from his feet. You made him sit upright, undoing some of his clothes until he was in his last layer shirt and his pants, deciding he'd be comfier with less clothes on. "Let's get you some rest, alright? You're going to have a massive headache tomorrow."
"Mhm..." groaned the first officer, "I think it's already *hiccup* started..." You gave a weak smile before laying him down in his bed, only dressing him with one blanket so he wouldn't be too warm that it'd be uncomfortable.
"My poor Jose," you murmured, sighing softly, "here, I'll go get some pain killers from the infirmary."
"No need..." Jose pointed a weak hand towards the bathroom, "if I remember... some are in there..." You nodded slowly before going to the bathroom and grabbing the painkillers from the cabinet (after taking a bit to find them), before bringing them out to him. Of course, there was no way you were letting him take drugs after drinking - the painkillers would be for the morning only.
"Get some rest, okay, Jose? You've had a rough night," words as delicate as the touch of a flower petal, your (E/C) eyes gazed down at him quite lovingly. It hurt to see his eyes so tear-stained, so red and so puffy.
"Thank you... and... please... stay with me... (Y/N)..." Jose murmured, closing his eyes. He drifted off to slumber quite quickly, and you were relieved you were able to calm him down just as quickly as he had fallen asleep. Sighing delicately, you got into bed next to him, cheeks burning red. You loved your boyfriend dearly, so you were glad that he wanted you to stay with him. As much as you wanted to respect his space, you wouldn't dare deny him of what he needed - and he needed you right now. You felt Jose's arms wrap around you, and you were sure he always removed the metal arm, and maybe he should've - well, maybe you should've tried since he was in no state to do it himself - but you didn't do anything besides allow him to hold you close and tight. You hadn't expected him to hug you since he had already drifted off to sleep, but you were content here with him. Your own (E/C) eyes closed as you drifted off into a deep sleep; guilty for leaving Emma alone, but relieved that you could keep Jose safe right now. You were more than happy to have reminded Jose that you were still here and that you weren't going anywhere.
***
Morning came sooner than anticipated, and you were the first to awaken. You were sure that Jose would be waking up any second now, and you were left wanting to get up and get him a cool glass of water, but also struggling to leave his side. It didn't help that he practically clung to you, rendering you unable to move off the bed. A faint smile appeared on your face, gently stroking his dark colored locks. You were happy that he looked less... frustrated, and more peaceful, even in his sleep. Letting out a gentle exhale, you found yourself sitting upright as best as you could, Jose's arms loosely hanging around your waist now. Your cheeks burned a little from the intense blush on your face, but your smile remained radiant as ever. You hoped he would feel better from his fears when he woke up. Slowly, you carefully removed Jose's arms from around you, swinging your legs over the side of the bed and yawning. Ah, you'd forgotten to take your shoes off. You couldn't help it, though! You had been so worried about Jose's well-being that you completely forgot about removing your own shoes. That was alright - you would clean his bed sheets sometime later when he was feeling better enough to be out and about. From what you could see, there wasn't too much dirt on his bed, so it wouldn't have been too big of a deal, and you knew Jose would probably care less about you getting his bed sheets dirty, considering he would've done anything to have you in his arms.
Gently, you lifted yourself off the bed, yawning and stretching your arms out before going to grab a plastic up from one of Jose's cabinets before going to the bathroom sink. Typically, you'd probably be against taking tap water, but to your surprise, Miss Nightingale had reassured everyone that the tap water within the manor was perfectly clean. You had Luchino study if it was really clean and well, Miss Nightingale wasn't lying after all. It was the cleanest tap water ever, and you were astonished how that was even possible. After filling the cup up with some cold water, you went back into the bedroom to see Jose sitting up, holding his head and groaning. This caused you to rush over, placing the cup into his free hand before grabbing the pain killers.
"Good morning, Jose. Take these, alright? I'm sure you're hosting quite the headache," you stated firmly, eyebrows furrowing in worry a bit.
"Mhm... thanks, babe," Jose said through another quiet groan, taking the pain killers and chugging down the cup of water, placing it down on the nightstand before sniffling. He looked up at you, eyes filled with worry. "I... I can't recall what happened last night. My headache is worse than usual... I can tell it wasn't anything good." Your lips pursued, forming a tight and thin line as your throat ran dry. Did you dare tell him what happened? Lying wasn't an option for you, so it seemed you had no choice. You couldn't lie to your significant other, not now, not ever.
"You were... drunk, stone cold drunk," you began, sitting down next to him on the bed, "Martha was in quite the hurry to get me and when I came to you... you were sobbing about how I was dead and how you failed to protect me." You gulped tightly, feeling like the saliva wouldn't be able to pass down your throat with how tight it felt. You wish you didn't have to say such words, and it hurt to say them aloud. Jose paused, before giving the weakest of smiles.
"I guess I made quite the fool out of myself, then?" Jose questioned, shoulders slouching, "misery sure likes my company."
"You're not a fool, Jose," you placed a delicate hand on his shoulder. You rummaged through your brain, trying to find the right words to reassure him and make him feel comfortable and peaceful again. "You struggled and that's okay... I told you this last night but I'll say it again since you don't remember." You inhaled and exhaled before speaking further, turning Jose's face to meet yours. "You've never failed to protect me, not even once. You're strong and safe... you're the person I feel the safest and happiest around. You'll never fail me." You knew why Jose felt this way - losing your entire family was absolutely awful, but the feeling of being unable to protect your other loved ones was just as agonizing. Jose's cheeks brightened and he smiled, bringing your hand up to his cheek before closing his eyes, turning his head slightly to kiss the palm of your hand.
"... You always know the right things to say, my love," Jose murmured, "you're the best partner anyone could ask for, truly." Your cheeks brightened and you smiled, shoulders relaxing as you closed your eyes.
"Just remember... I'm still here," you whispered. Jose nodded his head, sighing contently as he wrapped his prosthetic arm around you to pull you close to his chest, the two of you enveloping in a warm hug. Neither one of you knew what the future was going to hold, especially considering the fact you two were most likely trapped in this manor forever, but that didn't change a thing. Through thick and thin, you would still be there for one another and one day, you hoped Jose would be able to be confident in himself, because he would always save you, and you would always save him.
