hi! i wrote an essay about rosy ronkey and her clothes, and i hypothesized what time period i think shes from/inspired by ^^ below if you wanna read more :))

ive been fixated (or had a special interest or whatever you want to call it) on rosy ronkey for a YEAR today. i've always been pretty interested in her outfit from an aesthetically pleasing point of view, but recently i wanted to see if i could find any trends and time periods in the inspirations of her clothes, which is what this essay is about! it’s going to be an explanation of most of her clothes, top to bottom, from what i can assume with the research i've done. i say research, but i probably don’t have the best sources? they’ll be linked below, but it was really more cross-referencing than anything else lol

i reached out to annie montgomerie for comment/criticism, but she’s obviously very busy and i enjoyed my research from a subjective point of view :)

basic specs on rosy (no one else but me cares): looking at rosy, the only zoomorphic, or animal looking, aspect of hers is her head. judging by proportions and cross-referencing, she looks to have the body of an american girl doll. this is just what i’ve noticed, but annie’s most recent stuff is way less anthropomorphized compared to rosy and the group she was made with. looking at annie’s most recent exhibit, hand me downs, every single piece is completely animal, with hand-sculpted claws, paws, wings and hooves. some of these dolls legs still look like american girl doll legs, but most everything else is animalistic. this isn’t important, but i just thought id mention it because artists’ growth over time is cool!

starting with her coat, it looks like a double-breasted red childrens’ coat with two rows of two buttons each. these kinds of coats are still available today, but i could find the closest matches by looking at 1920s childrens’ coats, specifically rothschild coats. the rothschild family has a long and complicated history, but all that’s important to know is that they are new york based (which doesn’t totally fit my assumptions about her; in general i assume all of annie montgomerie’s dolls are british because of her nationality) and they’ve been in business for over 100 years. by cross-referencing the growing style of double-breasted coats in the 1920s, and the style of rothschild childrens’ coats in ads from the time, i feel like it’s easy to assume rosy's character has this coat, or at least was very heavily inspired by it.

a theory i’ve seen before is that the ticket on her coat is a luggage label. these were used during WWII to evacuate british children during the blitz. the history press site says luggage labels listed “name, school and evacuation authority,” and is also where i got most of my information. i want to tentatively deny this theory. i'm pretty sure the ticket is an annie montgomerie staple opposed to a part of rosys' character. she's shown with the tag in the yorkshire sculpture park video, and on gerard way’s website, but she’s missing it in all the photos posted by annie montgomerie herself on facebook and instagram. almost every single annie montgomerie piece on display or for sale has a tag as well. i love this theory, and it’s probably what got me interested in researching her outfit in the first place, but i don’t think i could prove it if i tried.

other than the ticket, she has white roses on the left side of her coat and some smaller twigs? sticks? pinned to her collar. white roses symbolize purity, youthfulness, innocence, and in some contexts, respect for the departed. i couldn’t find any historical photos of children with roses in their outfits, but across the board that was the result i got for their meaning. i can’t discern what she has on her right collar for the life of me, if someone else can figure this out, PLEASE tell me

her dress is pink, with a cinched embroidered waist and a peter pan collar. peter pan collars became popular in the 1920s, and have been a staple of childrens’ dresses since (sources for this one were a few blogs and wikipedia, but also some ads, so i feel pretty confident with it.) some ads for girls’ dresses in the 1920s had the same soft pleats and embroidered waist as seen on rosys’ dress. i don’t think there’s a meaning behind the color, except that it compliments the red coat and her fur.

her stockings are standard, I couldn’t find much special meaning behind them, british children have been wearing stockings forever, and for girls especially, stockings became more popular in the 1920s as dresses got shorter. usually they were sheer and nude, and rosys’ look like the gray kind kids wear today, but i think it’s still period appropriate to an extent. her shoes look like red mary janes for american girl dolls, just more scuffed and dirtied. mary jane shoes themselves have been around for a while (called “bar shoes” originally,) but they got their name in 1904. in one of the first drafts for this, i read the fairy tale “the red shoes” to see if it offered any insight. i thought it’d be fun to relate, but it’s just a popular danish fairy tale, and it was hard for me to entertain the idea for long.

TLDR: i think rosy ronkeys outfit is inspired by british 1920s fashion!

that’s all I have! i apologize if this was underwhelming or overwhelming or whatever, i had no model to base this off of and the only tumblr essays i read are from my friends <3 i hope you enjoyed! i love rosy ronkey!

Unfortunate Meeting pt1

That student is then revealed to be Tim Stoker with the other two being Sasha James and Martin Blackwood. Tim Stoker is a pale white boy with freckles, curly hair, large circular glasses, and braces, Sasha James is a black girl with long twisted hair and large circular glasses, and Martin Blackwood is a British-Filipino boy with a bowl cut and large square glasses. Tim and Martin wear uniforms similar to Gerry and Jon’s while Sasha’s is similar to Agnes’. They all wear party hats. Tim cheerfully says “We know there’s no club today but we wanted to celebrate!” Behind him, Sasha holds a tray of cupcakes and smiles knowingly at a blushing Martin who holds a fourth party hat. Tim continues “We have hats! Martin even made cupcakes! So be nice-”

Tim abruptly stops as the three of them suddenly stare at the scene before them, their eyes all a mixture of shock, curiosity, and fear./.End ID]

Short gag idea that turned multi-page venture. Will probably update weekly since I’m a bit busy! I don’t know where specifically in the story this takes place but it’s probably been a couple months since the start of the school year. Jon joined the Library Book Club (this universe’s Archives crew) in order to scout out Leitners before they become a problem. Jon, Gerry, and Agnes have already been investigating Leitners for a while but this is one of their first mass-burnings. Tim, Sasha, and Martin know absolutely nothing about this and just see Jon as their new (if prickly) fellow literature enthusiast.

it’s interesting that a woman in the same outfit would be just as scandalous. the fully exposed bra, the revealing dress, the ripped leggings. i call these looks he does the “stereotypical hooker”, who isnt a positive female figure. it’s also unacceptable for its boyishness. ripped, messy, boxy, ill-fitting — with the sneakers and beard.

based on what theyve said and how they approach it, some performers, like gerard way and brian molko, like to mess with straight men’s heads with their femininity. i dont sense anthony is doing that. it just looks like he’s havin a plain good time

Something has to break soon, and it looks like it might be Stiles, If only his mom was here, to help him cope. Maybe he should ask Derek to help weed them for the first time in years? At least that'd be pretty to watch. AU idea I had stewing for a while

The vibes are Scooby Doo in Highschool except the ghosts they hunt are Leitners and also they're British (so I guess they're in Secondary School.) I just wanted to see them as troublemaking teens who have a penchant for solving mystery and arson. Luckily the mysteries of Jurgen Leitner provide avenues for both. Who is Jurgen Leitner? Why does he have so many fucked up (if true) books? Why are a shit ton of them popping up in and around school campus? That's what this trio want to find out! Feel free to ask questions since this AU is not like, 100% complete or set in stone. Might be fun.

S1 v S4 JMart ft. Cat Jon

The first comic is set in season one. The first panel has Martin cautiously approach Jon who is at his desk, reading a statement while holding a mug. Martin says "H-hey Jon! Here's the files you asked for-" Jon then hisses at Martin and jumps away in his seat for the second panel. He throws his hands over himself, spilling the contents of his mug in the process. Alarmed cat ears appear on him as well as a tail. Martin looks surprised and jumps away from Jon, holding his hand in the air and the files close to his chest.

The second comic is set during the Scottish Safehouse Period. Jon and Martin are in bed during early morning with their arms over each other, Jon's on top of Martin's. In the first panel, Martin is trying to reach for his glasses while saying "Jon...we need to start the day..." Jon then weakly hisses in the second panel. His arm clutches Martin's shoulder and the alarmed cat ears and tail appear again. In the third panel, Martin gives up on reaching for his glasses and instead hugs Jon back. He smiles and says "Fine. Five more minutes." Jon smiles back and two hearts float above him./.End ID]

Jonathan "Mah-tin" Sims is a cat confirmed. Did this instead of working on another piece lmao.

I have no idea what movie they're watching but Tim's invested anyway. I thought this was only going to take me a couple of minutes but it actually took a long while because

A. I forgot how hard it is to draw multiple characters in one scene

One thing about Martin Blackwood that I think doesn't get brought up nearly as much as it should be is his love for "Retro" things.

Just Martin geeking out over things like rotary phones, 1950's dresses, polaroids, and all that stuff. Maybe he wears Cat Eye glasses to work? Who knows.

If you want JMart thoughts too imagine Martin going down to the Archives for his first day and seeing Jon in full grampa attire, wearing a bowtie like he's Carl Fredricksen from Up, and going "That's him. That's the man I'll fall for."

i was walking to my classes today and i just couldnt stop thinking: “i feel beautiful i feel so beautiful”. idc if im reducing my own accomplishments: gerard way during this tour heavily directed my comfort in my own skin. when i was a preteen, i disliked how i looked because i “looked like a boy”. rectangular frame, body/facial hair, curly texture, body fat, strong chin. i developed a healthier self-image in high school by essentially ignoring how i looked. but the joint effort of depression, the pandemic, and puberty almost reverted me to that crisis in self-image when university began. in addition to all my Masculine features, suddenly i hated my clothes, my hair, my expression. i just couldnt figure out what i was supposed to look like.

at the end of 2020, i started realizing that disconnect had something to do with gender identity. long story short, i now know that im comfortable being a woman but i dislike being identified as one. gender ambiguity, bigenderness, agenderness, transgenderism are very important to me. they emphasize self-creation. they prioritize self-understanding. they’re a shield from gender role expectations. they’re beautiful. but i still couldnt figure out what that meant in practice. i didnt see myself in binary transgender people or nonbinary people because i still felt semi-connected to my assigned gender. i was confused and alone. i had no frame of reference.

and like a fucking comet, my chemical romance entered my life july 2022. as nearly everything else in my life, i fell in love with them for how they made me think of Everything differently. the first aspect that enchanted me was the band’s stage performances in both the first and return eras. id never seen anyone so uninhibited. the second was gerard’s unique interaction with transgender people and identity (side note: THEN came the love for the music LMAO). the idea of being perceived as a boy bothered me until i noticed that gerard way is Mostly seen as a man despite connecting to womanhood in certain ways. that didn’t stop him from presenting as femininely or masculinely as he wanted. that never stopped him from celebrating his own gender nonconformity. disconnecting both myself and him from our assigned genders placed us on this even playing field. their facial hair makes them a man as much as it makes me one. wearing a dress makes him a woman as much as it makes me one. i dont know what he identifies as. it’s not my place to decide or ask. and to be fair, i dont know what i identify as. i prefer to express what i like over choosing what i should be. that was the freedom i learned.

they look beautiful. they look like an indecipherable amalgamation of cultural gender markers. deliberate, not haphazard. no matter if he considers it gender or stage performance — it’s what he chooses to do. that’s beautiful.
