No One Can Understand, How Much I Love Leah

(This might be a bit biased for me because I’m a big fan of the actress who plays her, Julia Jones. She is a really good actress)

Many people have been saying this, especially on tik tok, so I’m gonna say it here.

But there was something about Leah that I honestly really liked, and I wish for more for her character. I really saw her character as being relatable while also misunderstood, having bad things thrown at her, and also having a lot of potential. Her character is incredibly empathetic, and her anger is understandable.

Speaking on the movies, Leah is going through a lot, her dad just died, her mother is now a widow, she has to look after her little brother because he had just turned, along with herself, her boyfriend left her for her cousin, who was also her best friend, and now she is stuck with him, while also having to obey him. (and she has a psychic connection with said ex-boyfriend, and a bunch of other dudes) she was, and is the only girl in the packs, and none of the guys in the pack really liked her nor do they want her there, and they do not seem to care about what she is going through. And she knows that everyone in the pack thinks of her as the “pathetic ex girlfriend.” Which is not fair, especially when compared to Bella.

To me, Leah was just a Young girl who was just trying to do what was right for herself, her family, etc. while now struggling with uncontrollable enhanced emotions, and an uncontrollable enhancement in her physical body, while still going through so much trauma.

When she leaves the pack she doesn’t regret it. That scene with her finally opening up to Jacob, really spoke. She’s finally Letting things out, and there is someone who actually cares to listen. And worse none of the boys seem to apologize for what happened.

That scene makes my inner tween scream out. I loved that scene, it honestly made me really want Leah Clearwater books, her life before Turning, her life after turning, etc. Maybe Leah is finding new love, maybe being happy by herself. The story should have ended with her overcoming everything, being proud of being the first female wolf, the writing for the wolves was not done great,

Man, Leah (and the pack) deserved better.

Today's Dolltober 2023 theme on Instagram is "Stranger Things." So this is the perfect time to introduce my latest custom doll - Eleven! I'd heard so much about Stranger Things, and finally I watched it a couple of years ago, and immediately got hooked. It was a bummer to have waited so long for the fourth season to debut because of covid, and now the fifth and final season is delayed because of the writer's and actor's strike. Yet, I don't want it to end LOL.

Anyway, I was thinking of what I could do, and then it hit me - I could use an old extra Todd doll I had lying around and turn him into Eleven! He already had the buzz cut hair, so all I'd have to do is paint his eyes brown and have an outfit made. Yes, the 90s Todd and Stacie dolls had larger eyes, so this doll doesn't particularly look like a person, BUT that is the style of Mattel dolls of the 80s, which is the time period the show takes place in, so I say it works!

For the outfit, I knew I wanted the iconic pink dress/blue jacket ensemble. So I commissioned Molita's Closet since she has made a lot of 90s style Stacie clothes. The new Stacie won't work because she's larger and shaped differently than the original. She's also the seamstress who made Renesmee's outfit for that custom project. And on top of that, she had an extra Gymnastics Stacie body (articulated) that she offered to give me as well! So Eleven would be articulated! Not Made to Move, since that didn't exist back then, but good enough for me!

For props, I instantly knew that I wanted to make Eggos boxes. Eleven loves her Eggos! So I found an actual printable template of the Eggos box used in 1984 (when the first season takes place), resized it, and printed out several, then I glued them together. :D

So there you have it! My custom Eleven doll! I'm very pleased with how she turned out. :) Source photos at the end.

I feel like you’d like some of the meta written by @thecarnivorousmuffinmeta and @therealvinelle for Twilight. They have an interesting take on Edward that I think you’d agree with. They write great fic, too!

(I think you’d disagree with their take on Jacob, though.)

anon you have 100% understood my vibe, lol

their fics, (though i've read more of vinelle's), are ones i save and read on rainy days when i need to laugh a ridiculous amount, (nebuchadnezzer's dream is ICONIC and the scene of carlisle and jane starting a ziggy stardust cult lives rent-free in my mind), aside from "bleach on the brain," which is much heavier, and lives rent-free because it's haunting me...an incredible breakdown of all of the character dynamics post-breaking dawn, and such a fascinating perspective on renesmee and the volturi.

my feelings about their takes on edward and jacob are a little more complicated, and i don't know that i'd even use the language agree or disagree? i totally see where they're pulling from in the text, but my own personal understandings are a little bit different. and that's fine! that's how fandom works! (even with jacob -- I prefer to headcanon him differently, and have my own reasons from outside of canon for doing that, but everything they say is in the text, so...i don't agree, per se, and i'm not always in the mood to read certain works, like bleach on the brain, because of that...but also i don't disagree.)

but yeah, love both of their metas and fics!!! (vinelle's billy/charlie meta is literally one i keep in my drafts to reference when writing my fic for those two, i mean...)

What are your favourite nicknames/misspellings of Bella's unholy demon offspring?

I mean, "Renameme" is top tier. (re-name-me) Because, like, yes. Rename her! But it also works as Rena-meme because we have turned her name and getting it purposefully wrong into a meme.

For others I like it best when they use similar sounds/letters. Like yes any reasonably long word that starts with R can work, but I think they work better when they have S/Z or M sounds also, or an ungodly amount of Es.

Whenever I come across "Remdesivir" in the news my brain goes, "Renesmee." It starts with Re and has both an M and an S in it.

Renaissance. Has the RE and S but no M, still good though.

Rumpelstiltskin. R and M and S and also the inherent joke of it's another name that's impossibly unique.

ETA: CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT 'RESUME.' Yes, that one is also very good, all the right sounds, A++.

And again--there's nothing inherently bad about made-up or unique names. It's within the context here that it's just personally distracting to me. This is a series where the impossibly perfect mind-reading fastest being on earth who can speak dozens of languages fluently and is a bazillionaire is named . . . Edward. A series where the extra special psychic who can see the future and is a fashion icon is named . . . Alice. The tween vampires who strike fear into the hearts of all who hear their names are called . . . Jane and Alec. Even the "weird" names are not that weird. 'Carlisle' makes no sense for his time period but it's a real place name and and a real surname. Likewise 'Embry' is a last name being used as a first name. 'Aro' is unusual, I guess, but it's short, so it doesn't have the same pretentious trying-way-too-hard vibes as 'Renesmee.'

What I'm saying is that SM created dozens of super special amazeballs utterly unique overpowered immortals and then for the most part just gave them boring old white people names. And I LIKED that. I LIKED she didn't try so hard to make them special by giving them a special name. It makes sense that this guy born in Chicago in 1901 would be named Edward. So her then turning around and being like "well what do you name the most unique baby in the world?" is so strange to me. She named her fantasy ideal man Edward but then has to name the fantasy ideal baby Renesmee? Does not compute.

Also, as I have said before, it does not make sense that Bella Swan as a character would pick this name. For one, she's not that creative. Secondly, she hates 'Isabella' but she's all in on Renesmee? Sure, Jan.

Midnight Sun Part 2!!! Possibly my favorite section; I could not put it down, especially the rescue part. I did have Des Notes, though:

“It wasn’t really a difficult ask.” Nope, no way a vampire from 1901 would say this 2020s slang in 2006. Don’t slip up, Meyer!!! Or get better editors!!!

Alice introducing herself to Edward by hugging him and calling him brother and Edward going like “Yep, legit” will never not be great

Edward lying in bed and nearly giving Bella a heart attack with his sluttishness is almost worse in his POV, omg. How the fuck does that happen

Edward reading Tooth and Claw just because Bella recommended it. Remind me again why some people don’t like Edward?

Wait—Edward describes Bella’s scent as “lavender” or “freesia.” One of Bella’s favorite scents is lavender, as well as clean laundry. And she blushed when she looked at Edward, clearly thinking about his scent. Could Edward’s scent actually…be similar to Bella’s? Is that why her scent affects him so powerfully? Holy shit.

Edward “It was enlightening and alluring to watch her in her element” (Bella *eating Cheerios*) 🤝 Romeo “See how she leans her cheek upon her hand” (Juliet: *leaning her cheek on her hand*)

“Bella had gone to the other room to calm her mother. And then the vision had overtaken Alice.” Nice way to cover up that little plot hole, very enterprising

Very ambivalent about the highway scene. Otoh, it’s interesting and clever and detailed how the Cullens worked together. Otoh, it’s over the top at places! Like why did they flip the car into upcoming traffic????? Why did they even have to switch cars to begin with????? Meyer really should avoid full-length action scenes (I did like the Victoria fight in Eclipse, though)

Ngl, the James hunt is probably better than in Twilight, if just because Edward is at the front of the action. Still amazing how James slipped away from them

Jasper looks so dangerous to other vampires that James just…accepts his fate. Like welp, guess I’ll die. Iconic

“Why am I towing that ridiculous truck?” Okay, the Cullens hating Bella’s truck is officially a gag.

“For a moment, I imagined Renée as a vampire. Would her thoughts shout audibly at everyone, inescapable?” Nice foreshadowing/Easter egg for Renesmee. So there is a meaning and rationale behind the name other than Bella’s corniness.

That section where Edward watches James’ video and is so overcome with rage and despair and then starts to pray for the strength to leave Bella…that passage was so well-written I was nearly crying

Re: Edward’s decision to leave Bella, It is genius on Meyer’s part (or, well, just practical) to make the obstacles internal instead of external. Edward needs to deal with the consequences of leaving Bella and learn from his mistakes

Finished and in sum: This was great and only gets better in the re-reading. There is a lot of whinging and whining over certain aspects, mostly by anti fans, but those didn’t really bother me. Most lines were taken out of context, as they always do, and spun into something questionable; in context they were fine. Then there are those who say it is better and better-written than Twilight, but I disagree. Twilight was much better structured and less superfluous in detail than Midnight Sun, which could get bogged down in minute-to-minute summary. That said, Midnight Sun does have the advantage that all the dynamic change and development are on Edward’s side than Bella’s, as in a proper Beauty and the Beast telling. But Bella’s story does have power and is arguably more subversive than Edward’s. I think the two complement ultimately each other—the subtext of Twilight is the text of Midnight Sun, and vice versa. Reading both gets you a more complete picture…which the TV show would undoubtedly fuck up in some way if they decide to use parts of Midnight Sun. Le sigh.

S5 Ep 39 Part 2: Baby Pharaoh

My memory is something like tossed coleslaw at the moment with my on-and-off again long covid fatigue, but I’m pretty sure last we left off, Yugi and co were looking for Pharaoh, who as I’ve mentioned several times now, has fallen down a hole and can’t get up.

Alongside the Nile they have stumbled into Mana (man I hope that’s her name, it’s been so long since I’ve done a regular update, if her name is like Arkansas or whatever, I will not know, that’s just where we are. Bro who fact checks and spell check’s this blog was like “I dunno, sounds right? I’m not looking it up.”)

Whatever her name is, Mana is living her best life on this background that is askew just enough to cause me pain.

That horizon is killing me. I don’t recall exactly, but I’m pretty sure the bg was not supposed to be at an angle. Ugh, suffering.

Anyway, this girl is a card as well as a magical person, so unlike all the other NPCs in Egypt, she gets the opportunity to set her eyes on 20th century people and be like “wtf are you assholes wearing?”

Rather than convince Mana that Yugi is the Pharaoh and see where this plot line goes, Joey says, “Isn’t that Pharaohs’ royal purple cloak like right over there? This cloak that probably costs in today’s money like 5 billion dollars because he’s a literal Pharaoh and wears an entire dowry on his ear lobes?” and Mana is like--”Oh shoot. Weird I did not notice that when I was so fixated on the fish.”

And so Mana has decided to join Yugi and Co because she is very much just here for the ride and also any information on how to run into her kind of sort of whatever the hell relationship is between her and Pharaoh. This makes sense to me, honestly, this was how I navigated all of college. You end up at a lot of weird parties doing this, but you’d be surprised how many people will ask you to just join their crew if you happen to be walking the same direction and know one person in common.

Bro came up with that pun and he’s extremely proud of it.

Again, rip the horse from last episode, at some point an alligator must’ve gotten to him (or the fall made him explode into little pieces, don’t worry about it). But we find Pharaoh in this cave, just out of sight of anyone who would actually be able to spot him.

Perhaps he’s doing this to stay out of the heat, but it’s also very likely that he’s just very embarrassed for that huge L he took falling down that hole and would like to just vibe out in a cave for a bit and contemplate his earliest memories.

To go from the man who remembers nothing to remembering yourself as a baby who gets his ass wiped 7 times a day.

Memory is freakin wild to Pharaoh.

I know this is a lot of caps of Pharaoh as a baby but that is a WEIRD ASS BABY. Also kinda cute but the baby is WEIRD.

Peak Renesmee energy, this old ass child.

Covered in tears, a preteen Yami is dragged to a tomb somewhere in Egypt, as if to scope out his future abode that he absolutely will not be buried in because he does, in fact, get smooshed into a puzzle.

And seeing a wonderful opportunity he immediately topples into it.

After walking down this long pit, we come to take part in some sort of Ancient Egyptian gods ceremony. Which is fascinating, because it’s not too, too often in this show that we reference the Egyptian gods outside of what is in the cards that Marik plays. But these are like the literal gods, not the fancy cards.

I have no idea if this is referencing an actual ceremony we know about or an actual mural that we have in some tomb in Egypt in real life. but I’m gonna guess this is probably not 100% historically accurate.

I have since been informed it is Kul Elna and not Kel Elna but I am not bothered enough to fix the cap.

Death count according to my google doc is 7,805,847,571 by the way. Originally I thought there were 700 people in Kul Elna. But thousands infer at least 1300 more so lets add another 2K just to round it off.

Says a lot when I’m like “eh give or take 700 deaths it makes like no difference to the number.”

A nice shot for anyone that wants to do an anime panel redraw for that meme (do people still do that meme? I have avoided art twitter rather successfully lately so I’m blessed to no longer have to draw memes. Unfortunately I’m still on webcomic twitter but that’s just a place where people get viral by complaining, so I don’t have to draw nearly as much promotional material. It kinda rocks.)

I really should not have laughed while watching this part of the episode but that realization that Pharaoh was trapped in a necklace anyway, and then this immediately following it was quite a funny jump cut.

And then he was gone.

.......no backstory on Hassad, I guess? He’s just a guy who is wearing/is literally a millennium item and is currently depicted in a tablet?

I don’t even know where that backstory would go, it would have to be between Dartz and when the millennium items were forged out of the millennium stone. Or maybe he’s just a card? I dunno. But that guy jumped out of no where, just a brand new millennium item and now he’s gone.

My brother cannot tell the difference between Tahoma and Papyrus so hopefully it’s clear that Tea talks in Tahoma and Mana in Papyrus fonts. Unfortunately, they...have the same font color because I never initially thought they’d be on the same screen.

At this point, they run into Pharaoh, and Mana pretended like she knew that Pharaoh fell down a hole the whole time and that she didn’t spend half her day fishing.

Bro was like “Can you imagine trying to explain America to Mana?” and it sure was food for thought.

So, that’s all for this episode, in the next we shall find out how many more holes we can throw all our characters down. Which honestly is just Writing 101 when you think about it. As in Writing 101 the class, not 101 holes. Sorry I have a hard time reading and writing with long covid, although I still like to do it, so if parts of this are like incomprehensible, I’ll fix it in post. Like that joke just now. No idea if it made sense but we’re going to print it because I want to move on to the next episode.

No no no, wait. My friend was explaining Twilight and I'm just. So confused. The way they solve the love triangle is that Jacob guy raises their kid. And then falls in love with her. And so does she. No, I've got something wrong here-

No no, you've got that right :). That's is, in fact, how the love triangle is solved.

For anyone who doesn't know, there's this thing called imprinting in The Twilight Saga, which is a wolf thing. It essentially means that they (in this case Jacob) will see a person and, to quote Jacob explaining it: "It's not like love at first sight, really. It's more like… gravity moves… suddenly. It's not the earth holding you here anymore, she does… You become whatever she needs you to be, whether that's a protector, or a lover, or a friend."

At first sight this person becomes their whole entire world and they are completely and entirely devoted to them and anything they need. It can happen at any age as well, and there are two instances of people imprinting on a child in the series. The first is Quil imprinting on Claire (a toddler); the second is Jacob imprinting on Renesmee (a few minutes old newborn).

The writing says that it doesn't have to be romantic, and that it isn't romantic between the wolves and the children. Instead those relationships are like a caretaker or a brother without any thought to romance. They're instead concerned with whatever their imprintee might need with no regards to their own feelings. However, it's pretty much assumed/implied that when they grow up it will be romantic. Bella said something that basically said "who would reject that kind of devotion? who would pick someone else when they've got this?"

So in Breaking Dawn, twilight #4, Bella's pregnant and Jacob is devastated but sticking around because if he doesn't, she'll be killed by the other wolves and he doesn't want that. And because these are (they think) going to be the last times he'll ever get to see her.

Throughout his pov we just see more and more turmoil as he watches this person he thinks is the one for him fade from his life. Bella gonna have Edward's kid and become a vampire and then they'll be enemies, because werewolves and vampires don't get along. Then Bella and Edward have their kid (Bella dies in childbirth and is turned into a vampire) named Renesmee Carlie Cullen, and Jacob hates her so so much. This disgusting thing killed his Bella, so he's going to kill this newborn his best friend just sacrificed everything for.

But! Lo and behold! When he lays eyes on her the first time gravity shifts and this newborn baby is now His Person and the greatest thing in the world. He'd do anything for her. No one else matters anymore; they're all secondary.

Which means now he doesn't care about Bella and Edward's relationship, leaving them to be happy together, and because he's tied to Renesmee he's still in Bella's life in a way that doesn't cause either of them pain. Boom! Love triangle resolved! Turns out Bella was never the person for Jacob and it was always Renesmee pulling them together!

Oh and also because he imprinted on her none of the other wolves will kill her because imprinting is sacred. He's not romantically in love with Renesmee as the series ends, but due to the nature of imprinting it's basically assumed that once she's old enough that's what'll happen. And that the feelings will be reciprocated because "who could reject that kind of devotion?" (paraphrased).

So no, you do not have something wrong there, Nonsie. That is. That is how the love triangle was resolved. Jacob imprinted on Renesmee (nicknamed Nessie by her, which is where we get that iconic "you nicknamed my daughter after the Loch Ness Monster?!?! >:(( *attacks*" scene) and was suddenly no longer miserably pining after Bella.

Oh, Esme

(This is one of those situations where I like the character mostly because of the actors who played them. Elizabeth Reaser did really well with what she was given.)

Speaking on the movies, we did not get a lot of Esme, she did not get that many lines, screen time, she was not around Bella that much,

So you best believe, it surprised me when Bella named her own child after her. Like I get why she would name her child after her mother, the woman who “raised” her most of her life, or her father, Or Carlisle, the man who has healed her wounds, more than once, Treated her like a daughter, and who is the adopted father of the love of her life, or maybe Edward, Jacob, Alice etc. Literally all of these characters have affected Bella’s life way more than Esme

Esme might be the mother figure of the Cullen family, but she hardly contributes anything. If she didn’t exist at all, nothing about the books or plot would change.

She had no personality, and she wasn’t special or unique in any standout way which made her the least memorable member of the family. It’s unfortunate she wasn’t given a more interesting storyline.

Esme was kind of presented as a stereotypical housewife, in my opinion, Aside from the dope fight scenes she was in, she is supposed to be portrayed as a good person, to love and care for all of their adopted children, but we do not really see this in the films. she was sweet to Bella, but she didn’t really treat her like she was a part of the family.

Esme might be the mother figure of the Cullen family, but she hardly contributes anything. If she didn’t exist at all, nothing about the books or plot would change.

All she really did was kind of stand behind Carlisle, stand still, look pretty throughout the films. the only thing I could think of was that maybe Esme, seemed like the mom that Bella always wanted, always fantasized? But really she was not that influential to Bella or her life.

She deserved better.

y’all I am CRYING laughing thinking about how in the breaking dawn movie they really had rosalie sitting nice and cozy with a freshly bathed baby renesmee while edward was upstairs screaming over the body of his dead wife. she took the time and lit a FIRE in the fireplace yall. fully changed clothes and did her hair. humming to herself to drown out her brothers sobs as she holds his baby. i am weak. bad bitch queen shit icon

twilight phase is a curse because whenever I see that movie all I remember is Meyer's contrived logic in trying to explain how Jacob's imprinting on Renesmee was not actually a weirdo-pedo action with outright creepy tones. Like idk mate (no pun intended) but i think a man claiming a child is not a good or normal thing bruh.

I just hate supernatural stuff in fiction sometimes bc with these supernatural narratives, it gives the writers the chance to make these sort of situations as non-problematic or just... subtext or metaphor, when it is actually pretty explicit.

Yeah twilight is pretty fucked up and shows toxic relationships that should not be replicated irl but I am still nostalgic for that part of my life and I think the movies are kind of iconic visually, plus I love Bella's father because he's literally the only normal character lmao

I don't think the writer thought much about the book and what she was doing tbh she just needed an excuse to get rid of Jake's love for Bella and made the imprinting stuff that is basically some grooming shit but the magical version 💀
