Cargo trousers: the nostalgia and utilitarianism of their return
Cargo trousers, the iconic garment of the 1990s/2000s, are back on the streets, and to stay! But what were the main culprits behind the garment's comeback?
The garment is undoubtedly one of the hit items of the year. Thanks to macro-trends and nostalgia, it has flooded the fashion world, and the garment that was widely used in the 90s and also in the y2k years has made its grand comeback.
Now, it has a wider modeling, a re-reading of its design proposal and even different fabrics. Bringing comfort, style and a youthful charm, the garment also offers versatility in styling, because it brings life to the construction of looks that move between street-wear and chic.
It also contributes to more glamorous constructions, with national brands such as Misci, Hist, Another Place and A La Garçonne already incorporating the garment into their product range.
Cargo trousers took up approximately 6% of women's underwear in Spring-Summer/23 and are a confirmed trend for the coming seasons. But it is because of its eclecticism that brands are exploring the model, with finishes, details and new proposals, according to the trend forecasting and analytical data website, WGSN.
From its origins to becoming a must-have
The trouser came about through utilitarianism as a military uniform during the Second World War. The main purpose of the garment was to offer practicality, comfort, mobility and functionality.
The garment, which also has a sense of style and design, was eventually incorporated into different work environments, outdoor activities and cultural movements such as punk and rap.
Utilitarianism returns as a trend between 2018 and 2019, while these silhouettes appear on the catwalks of Europe and Asia. Between 2020 and 2021, brands such as Balmain, Prada, Off White and Salvatore Ferragamo brought pieces with strategic pockets and zippers, wide and comfortable models in their respective collections.
The then trigger for Generation Z
The return of cargo trousers as a must-have piece began with the collective nostalgia that the world found itself in after the pandemic.
Engaged by Generation Z and spread by social networks - especially TikTok - nostalgia for the 2000s brought about a revival of various aesthetics, such as Y2K, old-school hip-hop, and emocore. It also popularized indie aesthetics and skateboarding.
The return of outdoor activities was also a great ally. Since the silhouette of the garment is wide and comfortable, brands have started to invest in the garment and produce it with a range of different options, such as leather, jeans, knitwear, sweatshirts and even satin.
With ultra-casual versions, tailoring or tactel, the garment is suitable for all styles, occasions and tribes. Regardless of your personal style, the mood of the season or the occasion, you can use the versatile cargo pants as a stylish, creative and long-lasting option.
