sketch bc sometimes thinking about dee's relationship with her mother, motherhood itself, and her surrogacy drives me crazy..

here are my Thoughts (rambles) on dee and motherhood by the way

on one hand she was never meant to be a mother. she doesnt have the instincts. she despises motherhood as a concept ("moms are stupid!"). on the other? she has a baby brother. which, okay, sounds funny as a twin but the less loved child was definitely less coddled. she was likely parentified as a child. look at the way barbara seems to resent dee and see her as her competition, and compared dee to every other woman (degradingly). barbara probably saw dee as a failed woman—neither graceful nor popular nor beautiful enough. imposing in dee the need to be validated and seen as a Good Woman from a young age (see entering beauty competitions at a young age; wanting to be an actress; tell me i'm good (tell me i'm as good as an idealized woman)) and at the same time instilling in her the feeling that she will never be one. i'm going off on a tangent.

remember how dennis said barbara was warm and loving? dennis was probably always cared for more by barbara (and frank was probably never around.) and so that was just the status quo in the household to treat him with care. and so dee inadvertently took on that instinct. that dennis is cared for and she isn't. that she is sacrificed for his comfort or satisfaction. she feels an obligation or a compulsion stemming from this—to take dennis' hand even though she can't say "i love you," to let him cry on her shoulder while she has to stand a little firmer even though she is also distressed, etc. but at the same time she resents it. she hates offering comfort where it is never given to her (she's trying to care for her brother in some type of way and shes learned it from her mother who never cared for her a fraction as much as she cared for her brother.) and thus she resents motherhood—which is all about selflessness—both because it is such a parallel experience to this and because she never feels she could've been a mother. not a loving one. another failure as a woman.

the baby represents everything she could've been—loving where she is unfeeling, a dee who has moved past her mother's influence to become a mother that isn't cruel, at the same time finally winning at being what a woman supposedly should be like. but she isn't any of those things. yet she's still wholly loved by the child the few minutes she gets to hold him, and i think dimly deep down, through the echoes of her mom's criticisms, dee knows the child would only grow to resent her if she was really to mother him. another failure. dee's mother was kind of right about her—if only because she doomed her to be a failure at (their notion of) womanhood and all the warmth and beauty and instincts associated with it.

Charlie wearing your clothes (hcs)

if you leave anything at his place, he's usually bringing it back to you by wearing it over

if you have a different style to him, he will find a way to wear your clothes to make them match his usual ratty greaseman style. alternatively, he doesnt mind switching it up and copying some of your outfits completely

yeah basically as soon as you move in with him you share a wardrobe (whether you have seperate 'sides' or separate wardrobes entirely) in his mind- to a point. there are probably clothes you are both autistic about (yes youre autistic now yw), the most obvious example being his army jacket

though i dont think he would be completely unwilling to let you wear it, thinking back to when he lent Dee the jacket when she was cold

i can definitely see him lending it to his partner when cold, without them even asking, but also if he has to leave them for a bit. like you guys are hanging out but then he has to suddenly leave (for a gang shenanigan or smth idk), he would quickly take it off himself, drape it around your shoulders, give you a quick kiss on the nose and then hurry off. just so you can have a bit of him with you in a way

oh i can also see him taking something of yours with him too. like just snatching your hat and leaving (stop this is such a cute thing to do im gonna think abt it forever now)

he would share your clothes regardless of size differences too. like he would wear your shirts even if they were ridiculously over-sized or under-sized on him and go out in public without noticing how strange he looks

putting your hands in your pocket and noticing all kinds of detritus and shit he left in there from when he wore it. like literally just wanting to rest your hands for a moment and getting a handful of nails or fucking soup wrapped in cling-wrap or something

on the other side of that, leaving treats in your pockets for him like cheese cubes and chocolate bars. very easy to please in this way i think

also i wear a lot of caps, so i am imagining him becoming a cap wearer if we shared a wardrobe. im being too self-indulgent rn but yeah cry abt it <3

to add to that he needs. he needs to wear a bucket hat again

i doubt he would share pants though, because. your knees have touched those

oh omg and he definitely fixes up his own clothes, so imagine wearing your favourite shirt one day and noticing that he's patched up a little hole near your hip with a teeny black love-heart

like he would put special effort into fixing things up when theyre yours, hence the heart rather than just a typical patch-up

also i lose my shoes a lot idk why so. squabbling over your only pair of shoes and deciding on something stupid like wearing one each until you guys can manage to steal someone else's (im thinking of steal from mac and dennis sorry girls </3)

The Gang Goes to the Jersey Shore is giving me feelings about Dee and Dennis. Yeah, shit still sucks: According to the twins, Frank ruined their vacations by complaining constantly, and I bet they learned the sunblock-flask trick from Barbara. But also,, Dennis literally says “these are, like, the happiest days of our lives”!!

Like,, fun beach times??? The boardwalk is a place for “rides, and games, and opportunities to win stuffed toys”?? Dee gestured to Dennis when she mentioned the stuffed toys. We know Dennis loved Mr Tibbs. How much do want to bet he was ridiculously invested in the boardwalk stuffed animals? I 100% believe that he (at least once) spent all of his money at a claw machine and went off the rails when he didn’t win anything

I also believe that Dee would hunker down at a competitive game and win as many prizes as possible until she could trade them in for a huge trophy she could parade around. Tiny Dee, basking in the power of beating grown adults trying to win toys for their children...and also shoving her victory in their faces afterwards.

Personally, I have no doubt that Dennis would suck at winning toys in comparison. Being two wild kiddos, they’d definitely fight about who gets which toy...but also...if Dee sometimes let her brother keep some of the stuffed animals she won, because she didn’t care about the little ones, anyway...and maybe also because Dennis would be happier than she usually ever saw him be...that’s neither here nor there...

idk just. Going on vacations while in a toxic family can be horrible. But sometimes the change in environment allows people to forget and escape the miserable norm for a little while. And for two kids who never got gifts on Christmas, the opportunity to win things for themselves must’ve been at least a little cathartic

thinking about mac for too long actually makes me physically ache with sadness. he wasn’t loved by his parents, he never got to have young love because he forced himself to pretend to be straight, he lived in fear that god may not love him for being gay because he sees his sexuality and his religion and opposing forces (‘they’re at war’ 13x06 and the whole mfhp dance) and where he originally sought solace in the found family of the gang he’s slowly realising they might not love him either (‘you guys like me, right?’ 13x01). even so, given the crippling codependence of the gang and the fact that they’re so far down this road of mutual destruction that they are now barely able to forge new relationships, he sees dennis as a last resort to seeking an unconditional love that he has literally never felt, but the only way he can imagine that happening is by literally poisoning him to make him dependent on him.

Okay! The Gang are playing Rock Band.

Dennis: Vocals. Always on Expert. Stops to smirk at everyone when he perfects every high note. Whenever he doesn't 100% a track he blames Dee’s attempts to sing along and Charlie’s ‘insane grunting’ being picked up on the mic. Stands in front of everyone so he has more room to move (sway his hips). He gets to pick every song.

Mac: Bass guitar. He started on lead guitar Expert but he was the sole reason they’d fail almost every track, and still kept failing on Hard. He claimed it was because his ears are actually tuned better for bass and took it from Dee. Alternates between Hard and Medium based on how tricky the track is. Claims he has to do that because when the song is fast his fingers get too sweaty and slip off the keys. Refuses to sit while playing even though it would greatly help him. Is the reason they stop playing because he ends up breaking both guitars.

Dee: Lead guitar after Mac snatches bass from her. Wants to be on vocals but Dennis won’t allow it because he says she’ll fail them faster than Mac does on guitar (but it’s really bc Dennis can’t do any other instrument well). Loudly sings vocals when Dennis picks a song she knows she can do better. Actually near-perfects guitar on Expert if she's sitting on the ground. Spends any break she has attempting to trip or elbow Mac.

Charlie: Drums. Literally just goes fucking crazy on Expert, no one’s sure he’s even actually looking at the TV but he’s somehow always hitting 100%. Mostly squatting or kneeling as he plays, never sits properly. Makes weird grunting sounds that aren’t in rhythm with what he’s doing. When he has an easy run or a break he speaks completely normally like drumming takes no effort. Always fucks up selections by absently drumming while they're on menu screens.
