It's so weird to me how you get people who are just like. Casual fans of the show (who watched it when they were kids) trying to claim that "Candace and Jeremy didn't have any chemistry" or that "Candessa had more chemistry in 'Busted' than they did in the entire show" as if Jeremy was not explicitly shown to be madly in love with Candace from the beginning and they spent four seasons being mutually supportive and having a genuinely really good buildup. Like I get misremembering something from childhood but this is the MAIN CHARACTER of the show and one of her biggest character arcs like??? Some people just didn't watch the show and it shows.

Outer Range x Camp Half Blood x Wizarding School Face Claims

Ok guys so the lovely @floydsmuse and I have been going back and forth about a crazy idea if the Abbott family ran a ranch that was a mix between Camp Half Blood and Hogwarts. Happy Storyteller Saturday! It's Valentine's Day, or a similarly romantic occasion, how do your characters celebrate? (I'd love to hear about the unattached characters just as much as the ones in relationships.)

Okay, I'm gonna talk about two (technically three) couples and two singles!

Siv and Kari from Bride of Loki- Neither like big, massive surprises, and Siv feels bad whenever Kari gets her expensive gifts or romantic dinners that she can't afford to surprise him with. Instead, Valentine's Day evening becomes a movie night where they watch Old Earth rom-coms.

Melody Johnson and Clayton Johnson/Alexandri Volkov from Bite Me- Valentine's Day between Melody and her first husband was the classic image of flowers and chocolates and a romantic dinner. Clayton was a classy guy who liked to spoil the love of his life. When he disappeared, Melody started buying his favorite flowers every Valentine's Day just in case news came in that day.

The first Valentine's Day between Melody and Volkov was... chaotic. Melody honestly did not remember the day and spent the day scrambling to plan a romantic dinner when Volkov surprised her with breakfast in bed. They ended up accidentally destroying a restaurant. Now Melody just makes Volkov flowers.

Jeremy Dorado from Heartbeat- Does not celebrate. Was very surprised when he received a small bag of chocolate for Liza to celebrate the holiday.

MA Ayres from Bad End- Her dad usually buys her and her mom flowers. Now that he's out of the picture with the divorce, Frida buys her chocolates, and MA makes brownies for her mom and her friends.

So, it seems like this summer was for discovering last decade's successful shows which at the time I failed to aknowledge, for some reason.

It was Masters of Sex's turn, this time, and believe me, I know I'm late. I've been lovingly smiling at Michael Sheen's face ever since the Blessed Tennant-Sheen Blending happened, but I've always been more of a David Tennant girl so I wrongfully didn't bother to dig deeper in Michael's work before. But I KNOW how good he is: Staged was literally a bright light in the dark and that man is so good at expressing rage, I fucking love him okay?

At first I thought the emotional leap from the Pilot to the second episode was a bit sudden? I loved the strictly professional and detached Masters, totally focused on getting this very important project approved. I was intrigued by the curiosity that Virginia (who was so unashamed and resolute in that Pilot!) ignited in him. Why the hell does he start feeling confused towards her right away? And why does she appear "docile" and moved by guilt at once? I was like that monkey meme rising their arms. But this was just my little initial confusion, I guess?

While watching it I was also reading The Clitoral and the Vaginal Woman by Carla Lonzi and at some point she quotes Masters and Johnson, acknowledging their remarkable takes on women's sexuality. It was such a nice coincidence!

Feminist essays have long explained to us that especially straight sex is based on patriarchal approaches. Science didn't know that women (usually) don't orgasm with vaginal penetration. Men believed that their way of having an orgasm also applied to women. This should explain why it took us so long to understand certain things about ourselves: we weren't seen as the other totally different side of the population, so our input didn't matter. Masters and Johnson kinda changed that by approaching to sex in a purely biological way, for once (I realize I might sound like I agree with terf teory but I do not! I align with intersectional feminism). So their work was actually really important.

Watching the show I felt like actresses' bodies were definitely exploited. And that narratively most of the storyline evolves around Bill's (selfish and manipulatory) needs and purposes...I mean it's called Masters of sex, I get it. But I loved Lizzy Caplan as well, she's so talented, I didn't know she was such a good actress! Why don't I see these people around, more?? Their chemistry was so on point!

Also: Caitlin FitzGerald bringing character development with such grace!!!! And Jeremy Strong being more sad puppy than ever!!!!! Even Ashley Zukerman, at some point. Oh, my Succession heart.

There were moments where things went too far, in my opinion, but sometimes the cuteness would overwhelm me! I will take scenes like the Love Speech with me. I mean. Look how cute they were!

I'm just sorry the show wasn't given the opportunity to go on, there were a lot of things yet to explore and unfold. It's kinda bittersweet, when you get to the end.

I'd like to chime in on 'pretty privilege' (re: the anon who said looks only get you so far). When I was a teenager and in my very early 20s, I was pretty. I feel kind of weird saying that, but it's true. It opened a lot of doors for me, which I didn't realize at the time. When I was in college, I was diagnosed with a chronic illness that screwed up my whole body, and it had a major effect on my looks. People stopped noticing me, and a lot of those doors closed. It was hard for me to get used to that. I had never been a mean-girl type, and being pretty wasn't my whole identity, but it was a big shift. I still struggle with it some days (almost 30; it's been several years since I got sick). Now I'm in a better place health-wise, although I may never look the way I used to. But having that pretty privilege taken away made me empathetic in a new way, and it made me realize in hindsight how many advantages my looks had given me. It also pushed me to nurture and embrace other aspects of my personality and humbled me in a way that I'm grateful for, as much as it sucks. Do I wish I could have my old face and body back? Yes, a lot of days I do, but I wouldn't want to go back to the person I was at 20. I am getting way too personal on anon, and I'm not even sure where this story has taken me. But you and the other anon are right, looks can only get you so far, and even the best-looking people need to have more going for them than just looks. I'm kinder, more creative, more educated and more curious than I was, and although I wouldn't wish my experience on anyone else, I'm glad I'm a better version of me. I wish I could tell every pretty girl to appreciate it while she can and work on herself every day, even if she'll never need it. Just my two cents, since I'm sort of in an unusual position of having experienced both sides of it.

anon you are loved and appreciated deeply, and thank you for sharing your story <3 unfortunately it really is the way society is...we protect and give all the opportunities to the people more conventionally attractive. psychologically there must be some biases in there that have been built up for a long time. even though the standard for what is considered pretty changes with every decade, it's clear that society is not kind to people deemed not pretty. that's why it's important to love yourself and commit to giving love to yourself, being kind to yourself every day. it's even harder to deal with when you're young. but i think when you get older you just don't care. like...we're all going to get wrinkles and have grey hair and there's nothing we can do to stop that. so, just realize your value and don't let anybody else define who you are.

in terms of the specific convo to be had about this, clearly Hollywood values pretty people because they have marketability. they can be put on magazines, be the face of brands, etc. there's something to be said about people less conventionally attractive that are almost like...idk, weirdly fetishized? like Jeremy Alan White and Adrien Brody. you know what i mean? unconventionally attractive people can't just be people, they are treated a little differently than idk Aaron Taylor Johnson for example. like, they get specific kind of roles that suit their features. Jeremy won't ever get James Bond type roles for example, but someone like Henry Cavill will. idk if im explaining myself well but yeah

Under the Black Flag by David Cordingly is usually suggested as THE pirate history book. It covers a lot of ground, going deeper with a few of the big names, and how they tied into their era. He tends to waver back and forth between admiration and trying to go "well these men were actually bad people." The opening chapters also get into pirate literary and cinematic history, which is great, especially for someone new to nonfiction on the subject.

The Republic of Pirates by Colin Woodard is excellent too, and he covers the 101 needed to know where in history you are, but still, having a background in the Ongoing Fiasco that was Charles I to Queen Anne and the Fiasco of George I of England makes it a lot better. It's firmly rooted in the Caribbean Golden Age of Piracy, and never outright says that these men were among first to organize and more or less (if only temporarily) succeed in separating from Great Britain, but it shows it. Truth stranger than fiction and all that. It's definitely a zoomed-in look, and probably better read after Under the Black Flag

The Last Days of Blackbeard by Kevin Duffas. Okay, so this really isn't a requirement, but it's a requirement in my heart. Genuinely. It sounds like bullshit. Blackbeard wasn't from England, but from North Carolina, and he and his loyal men were highly involved with the governor who knew Exactly what they were doing, who purposeful structured rumors and myths about himself to keep the British away. It sounds fake. It sounds like a conspiracy theory. As my friend ninjagiry said, "I want to believe but where are your citations?" Kevin brought the receipts. Sometimes, literally, receipts. By the time I spent a week walking in these men's footsteps and hearing from Duffas among others, I was made convert. I

AVOID:

The Life and Tryals of the Gentleman Pirate, Major Stede Bonnet by Jeremy Moss. Written by a lawyer with no background in historiography or history writing, it's written like an undergrad book report that relies far too heavily on the first two titles I listed, name dropping them several times within the text or outright summarizing sections. I read this about six months before the show aired hoping to learn something new, and I did Not. There's a reason that this was self published and not picked up by a major imprint.

Why We Love Pirates by Rebbeca Simon It's not actually about why we love pirates, the author tacked on some tired and over discussed remarks about pirate stories and pirate movies and pirate popular culture to fluff up her dissertation synopsis about how the trials and execution of Captain Kidd are what lead to the immense public interest, fascination, and even admiration of (specifically) the Caribbean pirates. However, whoever edited this one missed several egregious errors in the first couple chapters. My thought is: if I, someone who is NOT a historian, caught these mistakes, what would a historian find? I want to use this book's research on Kidd, but I don't think I should trust it. I was so excited for this one too.

Avoid anything that relies heavily on Captain Johnson's Historie of Pyrates. Not exactly a solid source.

I haven't finished Born to Be Hanged yet, which is a new release this year, focusing on a small group of pirates hired by an Indigenous leader to rescue his daughter and several other women from their community from slavery and sexual abuse at the hands of the Spanish, but I'm wildly hype for it. After years, years of having to hear "these people were actually bad! you can't like them! if you're going to read about them I will tell you they're all evil and bad every page!" its refreshing to encounter "well, its not all that cut and dry, or that morally black and white."

DECEMBER 2022 BOOK WRAP-UP

I finished 2 novels, 1 novella, 1 picture book, 2 non-fiction books and 1 volume of a manga. ✨️

This was likely my best reading month in 2022 which I'm very happy about. 👌🏻

The books will be in the order that I finished them. My favorite book¹ of the month will be marked with a 🌟.

Understanding Chinese Fantasy Genres by Jeremy Bai

◇ Non-Fiction

◇ Finished on December 1

◇ First Read

◇ Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌘🌑

◆ What I Disliked: It wasn't nearly as comprehensive as I was hoping it would be, which I guess I should have seen coming given the number of pages, but it was still disappointing. The author did warn in the introduction of this book that it is there to give a brief overview over certain topics, but of course I didn't know that until I had it in my hands already. As a fanfic writer for C-drama characters with very limited research resources in English about the wuxia, xianxia and xuanhuan genres, I was very hopeful this might give me a much better understanding of how the genres, tropes, and cultivation techniques (specifically for xianxia) work, but unfortunately I didn't get as much out of it as I would have liked.

◆ What I Liked: Despite my initial disappointment, the author did touch on some things I didn't know yet, so it still held educative value for me and was worth the purchase. Especially explanations in regards to qi deviation and the like were quite helpful for my understanding of it. The author has a YT channel where he still makes videos about China and Chinese culture, so perhaps he'll release a sequel with more information in the future.

The Bane Chronicles by Cassandra Clare, in collaboration with Maureen Johnson and Sarah Rees Brennan (feat. illustrations by Cassandra Jean)

◇ Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

◆ What I Disliked: The writing style felt a little bit clumsy at times in the beginning and it took me one or two stories to get used to it.

◆ What I Liked: Magnus is one of my favorite characters in the Shadowhunter world and I loved reading about all of his adventures before and during the existence of the characters we already know from the different series. Cassandra Jean's art was, as always, a beautiful bonus. Magnus has lived for a long time, so seeing the world and our mortality truly through his perspective offered a much better understanding about some of the choices he made throughout the differents book series set in the shadow world. This was the start of my re-read of the Shadowhunter Chronicles and I'm excited to revisit all the books in it I've already read before and the ones I have yet to read for the first time.

The Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton

◆ What I Disliked: That it's so short, perhaps.

◆ What I Liked: From the whimsical rhymes to Tim Burton's enchanting art style, this was once again a delightful short read and a great bridge between Halloween and Christmas.

🌟 The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking) by Katie Mack

◇ First Read

◇ Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

◆ What I Disliked: This is not really the author's fault at all and instead due to my very science-incompatible brain, but it was very hard for me to grasp the science a lot of the time. What probably also didn't help that was the fact that I decided to listen to the audiobook of this instead of reading it with my own two eyes; if I had, that might have made it a little easier for me to understand some of the things the author talked about in scientific terms.

◆ What I Liked: Despite my struggle to comprehend some of the things discussed in the book, the different ways the universe might end one day is a very fascinating topic and I had a lot of fun listening to the audiobook. The way she described things was very engaging with a touch of humor here and there (I guess I'll never know whether that one fire and that one explosion during her college days really weren't her fault 🤣) which made the experience quite enjoyable.

I learned a lot and found that Vacuum Decay (Possibility #4) was likely the most interesting way to me for the universe to end. The fifth possibility (I forgot what she called it) I've heard about before in a documentary and it was fun to hear about something I recognized and had a little bit of information about beforehand.

One of the coolest things I learned about was that it's possible with one of those million-dollar telescopes to look so far away (thus so far into the past since the light we see is billions of years old) into space that we can actually see evidence of the Big Bang, that kinda blew my mind and now I wish I could go somewhere with one of those telescopes where someone can show me that.

For those with a fondness for all things space and who enjoy hearing about the ways everything might end one day, I highly recommend it; I really enjoyed it.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

◇ Finished on December 26

◇ Re-Read

◇ Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕

◆ What I Disliked: Some of Dickens's expressions and wordings of the time that wouldn't fly today, obviously, but aside from that, nothing much.

◆ What I Liked: What I love most about this story is the notion that it's never too late to change yourself to the better, to right at least some of the wrongs you've committed in your life, to leave the dark path you've been walking on for so long and find one that lights you a better way.

What's also interesting is that even though Scrooge was very adamant and firm in his lack of sympathy in the beginning, he cracked and showed compassion almost immediately once the ghosts took him on his journey, which tells me that the uncaring grump is not just a mask for the people around Scrooge, but also for Scrooge himself, so much so that he seems to have forgotten that it's only a mask and has become convinced it's his true nature. In the end he was so scared of dying alone with no one to mourn him, especially after seeing all the love and grief expressed after Tiny Tim's passing in the potential future, that it made him realize how much he really longs to be loved. It's a great, nearly timeless story that still holds value today.

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

◇ Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

◆ What I Disliked: The pacing and atmosphere felt a little bit off sometimes, but other than that, not much.

◆ What I Liked: The Infernal Devices is my favorite series in the Shadowhunter Chronicles, so I was really excited to start reading it again. Jem, my favorite character, was even more lovable than I remembered, as was Charlotte. I love the setting and the characters and the tension between them, as well as the mystery and the plot twist, they were very fun to rediscover. I look forward to continuing my re-read of the trilogy in January.

Nana (Vol. 1) by Ai Yazawa

◆ What I Disliked: Asano, obviously, and Shouji, even though that's not very relevant in this volume, yet. xD

◆ What I Liked: The complexity of the characters (*sigh* yes, yes, even Shouji in a way, though I am still not his biggest fan), the art style, pretty much almost everything. NANA has been one of my favorite manga series since I was a teenager. I also loved the live-action movies (especially the first one). I've been in the mood to re-read them, so it's fun to rediscover the story, even though I know it was never finished (which still makes me sad 🥲).

And that's it! It was a pretty good reading month, I enjoyed pretty much everything I read to varying degrees, so I'd say it went well. 😋

I haven't decided yet whether I want to make a post about my favorite books of the year, but maybe, we'll see.
