20 questions for fic writers
alright @emonydeborah said hey there's a thing and i say yes (ages later)
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 6
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 28,070
3. What fandoms do you write for? Honestly, whatever's catching my fancy in that moment. Of the things I've posted, The Librarians is the only fandom that I've ever even posted more than one fic for.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Raising Harry (Harry Potter/Underworld) Where Selene comes across Harry playing at the park alone at night and decides that the best idea is to sorta adopt him.
Never Say He Isn't Grateful (Agent Carter/Captain America) Howard realizes he owes Peggy big time and the best way for him to repay her is to go rescue Steve.
5 Times Ezekiel Called Eve Mum and the Time They Made it Official (The Librarians) 5+1 what it says on the tin.
Second Time Around (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) Coulson went in on the Bahrain mission, May died. Oneshot re-write of the first episode that I considered expanding and have actually written other chapters for but... 🤷‍♀️
How Apep got Ezekiel Grounded for the Rest of his Natural Life (The Librarians) Season 3 Finale in the same universe as the previous Librarians fic that has a second chapter I have yet to write...
5. Do you respond to comments? I certainly try to. I'm not the best at it, but I love getting to have a conversation with anyone who likes the same things I do.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Heh probably I'm Not Your Mother but even then it's a) not really all that angsty and b) mostly that I dropped a mean bomb on characters and then ran away because I have no idea what else to do with it.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? ...everything else? Look, canon is already regularly very mean to characters. I am here to live in my happy little fantasies where everything works out.
8. Do you get hate on fics? Not hate per se but I'd left up an unfinished multi-chapter fic at one point and someone commented that I was the reason they'd lost faith in authors with unfinished works and is maybe more responsible for me not posting any of the myriad of things I have on my computer than I want to admit.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Nah. I write more family than relationship stuff, really.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Yes. Uh... it's not posted, but maybe the Harry Potter/Song of the Lioness that I hashed out at one point.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Don't think so.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?  Don't think so.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Ha! @emonydeborah and I spitball all the time (it's wonderful) and she absolutely gets credit if that parent trap fic ever gets finished, but I don't think I'm up to the group project that would be co-writting a fic.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? the Enterprise NCC-1701 dash nothing! All jokes aside, it genuinely is the only ship I go back to on a regular basis.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Uh... honestly, I don't know that I'll ever finish half the things in my WIP folder.
16. What are your writing strengths? Probably dialogue. I feel I'm pretty good at getting the character's literal voice down.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Anything happening around the dialogue. In my head these people are always moving around and doing things, but it always feels so clunky if I try to put that onto a page.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? Maybe an individual word or two for a curse or endearment. I know enough Spanish I'd probably be comfortable writing in it. But that'd be about it.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Uh.... Star Trek? One sec, must check files. Yeah, pretty sure it was a short TOS thing. Hmm might need to take a look at that again, clean it up, repost...
20. Favorite fic you’ve written? Posted? Probably Ezekiel calling Eve mum. Not posted? Nah, actually, don't know that there is one that's not posted.
.... @the-redhead-in-a-dress and @sun-lit-roses did you do it yet, did you do it? I wanna see 😁

Mid-Year Book Freak Out 2022
I was tagged by the wonderful @dauen, thanks!
1. Best book you’ve read so far this year I'll do a few. Coreggidora by Gayl Jones was beautifully written and very tough, Way Station by Clifford Simak was delightful and hopeful in that particular midcentury SF way, and Daria Serenko's Girls and Institutions [Девочки и институции] made me cry on the bus.
2. Best sequel you’ve read so far this year Like Amy, I haven't read too many sequels, but I loved the last installments to Connie Willis's Oxford Time Travel Series: Blackout and All Clear. I read over 1000 pages in under a week.
3. New release you haven’t read yet Rebecca Makkai's I Have Some Questions for You. I'm in a long line for it on Libby...
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year I don't really keep track of new releases? But if you know of a book you're excited for, let me know!
5. Biggest disappointment The Court Dancer by Kyung-Sook Shin. I'd heard great things about the author and the translator and I'd expected it to be right up my alley, but it just fell really flat for me.
6. Biggest surprise Probably Into the Planet by Jill Heinerth. A memoir about cave-diving isn't the sort of thing I usually read, but perhaps that's why I enjoyed it so much -- her life is so different from mine, and it was endlessly fascinating to discover underwater caves with her and her crazy fellow divers.
7. Favourite new author (debut or new to you) New-to-me, to name a few: Penelope Fitzgerald, Gu Byeong-Mo, Elisa Shua Dusapin. I'd like to read more from each of them.
8. Newest fictional crush/newest favourite character For a fictional crush, almost certainly the elderly actor Sir Godfrey in Blackout/All-Clear. For a favorite character.. I really found the whole family in The Five by Vladimir Jabotinsky very interesting. And I enjoyed the titular demon and angel in When the Angels Left the Old Country by Sacha Lamb.
9. Book that made you cry I already mentioned Girls and Institutions. I think Shadow Lines by Amitav Ghosh might have as well.
10. Book that made you happy Christopher Isherwood's The Memorial. Not because it's a happy book, really, but because he can always be relied upon to be good. It's like visiting an old friend, reading a novel of his I haven't read.
11. Favourite Adaptation Well I've just discovered that my beloved Silo Saga by Hugh Howey has finally gotten an adaptation, and I've only seen 2 episodes so far but (though I have some qualms) I'm overall liking it quite a bit! Y'all should read first though.
12. Prettiest Cover This one's pretty good:
Tumblr media
13. A book you need to read before the end of the year: There's a lot. I guess top priority (not counting what I'm already reading) would be Cartes postales by Chantal Spitz, At the Edge of the Woods by Masatsugu Ono, All Our Yesterdays by Natalia Ginzburg, Greek Lessons by Han Kang, and How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone by Saša Stanišić.
I'm going to tag @queenofattolia, @colorwheels14, @nonbinaryjomarch, @oldshrewsburyian, @sleepanon, @teacademic, and anyone else who feels like it!
*For a lot of these questions I could have also said Дiм для Дома [A House for Dom] by Victoria Amelina, but I accidentally took a break from it so I haven't finished it yet -- though so far it may end up being my favorite book this year. It's warm, and poignant, and feels very true. Victoria Amelina was killed earlier this summer.

Rewatching old favourite crime dramas...
I just finished rewatching Vera up to Series 9, am in the middle of a rewatch of Death in Paradise and have started rewatching Wallander as well and am having some thoughts so I'd thought I'd write a post instead of just stewing in these thoughts.
Vera
I love her, your honour.
I love Vera, I love the location and how it's so beautifully shot, I love the slightly gothic edge to the mysteries. Most memorable episodes for me are "The Crow Trap" and "The Deer Hunters". It holds up really well too - sometimes I'll rewatch a crime drama that I once loved and find myself getting increasingly intolerant of the way it deploys certain tropes, like the tortured brooding lead detective with anger issues and/or a tragic backstory or "internal investigations are bad actually" or "it's fine for the lead detective to lose his temper and almost murder someone" which spoiled Waking the Dead and The Inspector Lynley Mysteries for me (the latter in the final seasons, mostly). Vera lacks most of that kind of drama. Vera is, in a way, a tortured, brooding detective but it never takes over the story.
One thing I did pick up on is that while I don't really have any preference for Aiden or Joe as Vera's offsider, I do miss the way that Joe's character opened up different storylines. We don't get nearly as much about Aiden's family and home life as we do about Joe's, and we got more about Vera's past and private life with Joe, like the subplots about her half-sister and her angina. I do feel cheated that Joe's exit happened off-screen, between series, but apparently he's coming back in Series 13?
(n.b. I finished at Series 9 because I don't have Series 10 on DVD, I started Series 11 but it was a bit too fresh in my mind and Series 12 isn't out on DVD yet.)
-
Death In Paradise
This isn't the first rewatch of the show I've done (the early seasons I've rewatched multiple times, they're very familiar and I can remember whodunnit) but I haven't watched any of the newer seasons since Series 8, except for a couple of episodes (I watched the one with Sam West and the one where Camille came back). I'm halfway through Series 9 at the moment so officially this is no longer a rewatch but a first-time watch.
It's interesting to see how my opinions have changed. I still think the show was strongest in relation to its core concept in Series 1 and 2. You can really tell the way they were planning the show to unfold had they managed to hold onto Ben Miller as Richard and Sara Martins as Camille, and I do really like that version of the show. But they didn't and the show had to change and that's fine. I used to be very fond of Humphrey but I found him painful in the rewatch - he hits my second-hand embarrassment squick much too hard and his unrequited love for Camille was... ah, not good? I was glad to see him go, tbh. Perhaps because of that, I appreciated Jack a whole lot more - I previously felt he didn't really have much of a character beyond "rambling Irishman" but that is really unfair. I just watched his last episode and I'm very sad to see him - I also felt his ending felt a bit... contrary to the character and the way he threw himself into island life, becoming part of the community in a way neither Richard and Humphrey never did. Neville seems a bit of a return to Richard, in that he doesn't want to be on the island, except by making him have so many medical issues, it really feels like that yeah, he really shouldn't be there.
-
Have been pondering how awesome it'd be if the next Death in Paradise detective is in the model of Vera.
-
Wallander
I needed something to watch in the space where I normally watched Vera and I remembered how I was going to try and watch some things in Swedish in effort to help myself learn Swedish better (I'm doing the Duolingo course, it's not going well), and well, this isn't in Swedish but it's set in Sweden so it might just do for now. I went... slightly insane* over it in my first and only watch but I thought I was safe now.
Yeah, well that happened again.
The thing I really like about it is Tom Hiddleston's face the way in which it spends a fair amount time of the affects of coming face-to-face with violent, brutal crime. How intensely Wallander feels everything, how involved he gets, and how all of that just means he's held at a remove from his family, friends and co-workers. He has this remarkable empathy that keeps him cut off from them.
It's also beautifully shot and I'm obsessed with the title credits.
Parts of it hold up fairly well - I feel "Faceless Killers" is still very pertinent to today, though I suspect there would a bit less... "both sidesing" within the main cast. Parts of it do not hold up well, like "One Step Behind" which, uh, is kinda extremely transphobic in a way that does not refute the transphobia.
The language and accent choices throw me occasionally in this rewatch. I think what they ended up going for is the translation trope/convention where the characters are not actually speaking English but are actually speaking Swedish, we just hear them in English, and a similar logic applies with the British vs. Swedish accents. When we see text, it's in Swedish, not English, which tends to confirm my hypothesis. Given the unlikelihood of the BBC doing the series in Swedish and the perils of getting the cast to put on an accent (no one wants to accidentally invoke the Swedish Chef in a brooding crime drama), I think this "they're speaking Swedish, we just hear it as English" thing works pretty well. But there still moments where it pulls me out of the story because the dialogue sounds so terribly British.
Random note: the cast of the first episode is like, full of pretty damn famous people? Obviously, there's Kenneth Branagh and a pre-Loki Tom Hiddleston as series regulars. Plus there's Nicholas Hoult and Rebecca Ferguson in guest roles. There's also a lot of people who are the sort of people you know for turning up in British TV shows, like Sarah Smart and Sophie Stanton (who, most memorably for me, was Falstaff and Caliban in the Donmar Warehouse's Henry IV and The Tempest).
Also, this reflection from when I first watched the show is still true. I thought I was over my Hiddleston phase but he's so fucking pretty in this show. It's distracting. It's literally sir, sir, sir, I am trying to watch Kenneth Branagh have a mental breakdown while solving crime in Sweden here. Take your cheekbones and go somewhere else.
Which he does at the end of Series 2 and then I miss him. Obviously, it doesn't impact the series that much - I enjoyed Series 3 and 4, his character isn't important to the story and isn't that interesting. But I liked the dynamics of the team and I dislike losing that (we also lose Lisa at the same time, and Ann-Britt only sticks around for a bit longer before she's gone too). I'm sad we lose that. I'm also a depraved whump lover and frankly think it was a wasted opportunity. Send Magnus off horribly (as Ann-Britt and Svedberg were sent off) and let Wallander writhe and wallow around in the guilt and grief. Also, I am completely shallow and didn't really want Hiddleston to take his cheekbones and go.
* I, uh, may have written an 87k word thing that's 3/4 whumpy fanfic and 1/4 origfic because it was November and I was doing NaNoWriMo and I was too hyped up to research and too scared to commit fully to the fanfic. I've reread and I feel like it holds up ok. I think the Kurt voice is good, as is the "gets too invested without being able to show it" thing. I am experiencing the urge to turn it into proper fanfic. I need to see how S2 ends and S3 begins but it could even work well as a "and that's where Magnus went" fic. But I don't think there's a fandom for the show outside of the migratory Hiddleston smut fandom.
-
That last point is one of those things with British crime dramas. It's quite common for some of the regular cast to leave between series and you might get a throwaway line about why they're no longer there but there's no proper send-off, no real resolution for the character, and sometimes there's no explanation. It happened in Vera, Death in Paradise, Wallander, Waking the Dead, and probably more than I just can't think of. I understand why it happens but it does make for frustrating storytelling.
The most egregious is Joe leaving Vera - he was the most important character after her! We were invested in his relationship with his family! The relationship between him and Vera was so paramount to the series! And he just disappears between series and his departure explained in a line about a "big promotion". Sure, this ties up one of the parts of his storyline quickly but there's no scene to say goodbye to him, no sense of closure. He's just gone.
-
Both Vera and Wallander are based on novels by Ann Cleeves and Henning Mankell. I've read a few novels of both series (and Cleeves's Shetland series) and I have to say... I feel the TV series really elevate them. With Wallander, maybe it's a case of a bad translation or something else but it seemed to lack something - perhaps the prose felt too simplistic or too blunt? With Cleeves, I think it's a case of has all the right elements, just doesn't have the ability to take it to the next level... I find I enjoy her novels more when I haven't seen their TV adaptation or are significantly different, but they're still not novels that I have to read. I wish the Shetland series had stuck with adapting Cleeves' novels because I'm obsessed with their first/second series (it was released as one series in Australia) which were based on the Cleeves novels, and I feel like the Shetland novels that weren't adapted would make excellent TV.
There are also four Death In Paradise spin-off novels that feature Richard - I've only read two of them and only really remember the first, which was OK - not great, not as fun as the show but still fun. It's nice to get more Richard but it comes with a trade off: Camille, Dwayne and Fidel play much, much, much smaller roles than they do in the TV series.

Gemstones Episode 2.3 Review: Kelvin topples, Keefe cuddles, and Titus is caged.
This is a continuation of Episode 2.2: Kelvin clenches,Keefe dances, and everybody flirts with Eli.
Tumblr media
Four guys in the steam showers:  A montage of the God Squad in their compound outside Kelvin's house, working out with wooden equipment, shaving with an axe, growing crops.  Performers that Kelvin hired would live in town and have ordinary social lives, with friends and families, and appear only for rehearsals and shows.  This is a whole society, a homoerotic alternative to the mundane world of men constrained by wives and children, imprisoned in small square houses "made of ticky tacky."
Kelvin congratulates Keefe on his leadership, then says  "I'll meet you in the steam showers, but bring Titus and Odd Chris.  I could smell them during worship."  Every guy working in the hot sun all day will be pungent; in-universe, he is obviously inviting the other men so he and Keefe can each have a sex partner.  The leaders of many messianic cults require sex with random members.
The Human Pyramid:  We see the God Squad perform before an audience of teens.  Kelvin introduces the strongest member, Torsten, who dated a "female" in high school before she tried to seduce him, and he had to decide on "his celibacy or his soul." It is clear that by "celibacy," Kelvin means much more than avoiding sex with women.  You must reject the entire heterosexist trajectory of job, house, wife, and kids, the nuclear family myth, the domestication and civilization threatened by the "female."  The way to salvation lies in the beauty of male bodies, in homoerotic desire unhindered by emotional connection.
But when they move on to a human pyramid, with Kelvin on top, it topples.  The House of Cards collapses.  Maybe it's can't be all about the penis after all.  Keefe behaves like a concerned boyfriend, rushing onto the stage and embracing Kelvin to protect him from plummeting musclemen?).
Kelvin Wants to Spoon: After a scene with Jesse and his family discussing whether Eli is a murderer, we cut to Kelvin in his dressing room.  What follows is very difficult to read. Fans are likely to shake their heads and say WTF?  during their first, second, and third viewing.  How does any of this fit into the Kelvin and Keefe's established character?
On the surface, it seems easy enough.  Kelvin, in underwear, is looking out the window at the God Squad below. Keefe enters, having drawn him a bath, and tells him that both Liam and Titus were injured in the human pyramid debacle.  Kelvin thinks that it's their own fault for being soft on the fundamentals and skipping leg day.  "Something might have to be done about Titus," he says menacingly, an action-adventure movie villain.
Keefe: "I completely agree."  Note that he is not an assistant, or his opinion would be irrelevant.  They are equal partners in the God Squad Cult.  "But some of the others have been questioning their place here as well. That's the downside of assembling an entire group of alpha males.  As they grow stronger, they grow more defiant."  The men are not content with being mere objects of desire; they want autonomy and control.
Kelvin slips off his underwear and hands them to Keefe, who then helps him put on his bathrobe -- from behind.   He has to press his body against Kelvin, crotch to butt.  Then he caresses Kelvin's thighs instead of breaking away. It would be much easier from the front.  Why does he go in from the rear?
When he is finished, Keefe walks over to the mirror, but Kelvin isn't having it, and moves in front of him to get into the butt-to-crotch position again.
Their gestures and positions are blatantly erotic.  Kelvin is in physical and emotional distress, and wants to be comforted.  In a society where romance is forbidden, this is how lovers cuddle.
Tumblr media
"Brother, what's troubling you? " Keefe asks. "Your mind seems dark and black."  It's a secret.  Keefe promises not to tell anyone.
Kelvin turns around to reveal that his Daddy may be a murderer.  Their faces are only a few inches apart, far too close even for lovers, unless they're about to kiss.  One of them must back up to a comfortable conversational distance.  Kelvin is right against the mirror, so it's up to Keefe to back up.  Why doesn't he back up?.
We see here Keefe struggling with his desire to move the relationship from "erotic partners" to "boyfriends," struggling with his urge to kiss Kelvin. Notice that he says "Are we in trouble?", not "Are you in trouble."  He is not an employee, who could just find another job if the church went down.  They are romantic partners; they are in this together.
Eli lays down the law: In the next scene, we learn that Liam (Peter Kaasa), who was injured during the human pyramid stunt, is suing the Gemstones. They don't need another scandal right now.
Eli tells Kelvin to "stop acting like a child" and "grow up."  It's time to "put on your big boy pants, and stop playing with your muscular boys."  Kelvin yells "They're muscle men, Daddy," but he has missed the point.
Eli thinks that Kelvin's erotic play is immature and childish.  Adults can't be all about desire, about doing things behind closed doors; they need connection to the greater society.  His talk omits the usual "find a girl, get married, and have kids" part of the heteronormative litany, since he knows that Kelvin will never relate to a woman in that way.  But he still needs relationships based on love as well as desire.  He needs to be part of a family.
Tumblr media
"I will do the coming": It's time for homoerotic shirtless Bible study, but muscleman Titus doesn't have time "to sit around for story time like a fucking toddler."  Enraged at this challenge to his authority, Kelvin forces him to do the cross challenge, lifting a ten-foot high cross to an upright position.  When he fails, he must spend ten days in a tiger cage.
Titus yells: "Destruction will come unto thee, and I will do the coming!"
Kelvin (grinning): "That's nasty."
Interesting that Kelvin's plot arc in this episode ends with a dirty joke.
The full review, with NSFW illustrations, is on RG Beefcake and Boyfriends

SaL anon here my friend after a very, very long week. This is actually my 3rd attempt at sending you an ask. First, I finally had time and was excited to type up something for the latest episode and then the Buck LI stuff came out and the mood for that was killed. Next I had mostly typed up my salty thoughts only to have my internet go down (yes, I whined at home "what i was going to read??!!" and pointedly ignored my very much filled bookcase because my ships aren't in them). So here let's see if this one works out.
So how is it KR and the promo dept always manage to kill any joy we have when we get fed any kind of Buddie content (the follow-up to the Eddie getting shot, and the 5b and premier come to mind here)?? Seriously Buck and Eddie more or less went on a date and had family night together and almost immediately they came back with "look Buck and Eddie are going to go on dates!!". Its exhausting cause it seems like any time they put out a story that might even be slightly suggestive of them being more than platonic bros they insist on following it up with stories to "prove" they are, no matter how recycled those plots are.
And okay let's take a second here to ask WTF is KR doing with these characters? In 6b alone we've had Buck dying, a coma dream, PTSD, super powers, and now he's getting a crush, and we STILL haven't finished the accursed sperm donor storyline??!! Bobby and Athena investigated had the death of a beloved friend 🙄 plot, HenRen had the nonsensical Denny secretly seeing his Dad which was never an issue before plot, and Madney and Eddie are just kinda there?? The other characters have had at best one storyline where the audience has to either invent or rewrite the backstory for. But for Buck he's had like 50 plotlines, none of which have really gone anywhere? I love Buck but I'd rather have him have 1 good arc and resolution than whatever this bullshit is. I'd easily take that screentime and give it to any of the other characters if it meant we got 1 well thought out and executed storyline. Instead we're just recycling and redressing old plots for everyone else while KR uses a magnetic poetry set to plan what Buck's doing from episode to episode. We have 5 episodes left in the season, 4-5 guest characters that are going to be incorporated (including 2 much beloathed ones 🙄🙄🙄), and nothing really setup for our mains to do (even Eddie dating isn't setup, it literally hasn't come up after Ana and you'd think they could have in 6a while he was watching his son mature).
Anyway, I'll stop the rant here though there's definitely more I could say. I'll close off saying I hope you're feeling better today since this week looks like its been rough on you. Sending you virtual tea, soup, and hugs!!
Long week is RIGHT my friend! I'm so sorry you were foiled in your previous attempts! I am right there with you on the Buck LI stuff just...sucking a lot of the joy out of things for me. Because of course we're doing this again 🙄🙄🙄 I was even writing up notes on a possible fic and you KNOW I haven't written anything since Malex and even that was before s4 started. But alas. That sucks about the power going out! I hate when that happens especially if I was in the middle of something! (Also I am SO with you. I keep buying books and then just...not reading them because my brain says "it's not our blorbos so no.)
I am just...so tired at this point. Like yes these people *may* not stick around, but even so, I don't want to loose out on Buddie scenes and Buckley-Diaz family scenes! I don't want Buck to have 90% of his time and discussions with some new character I do not know or care about instead of Eddie and the firefam! They already tried to do that with BT and it was the woooooorst! I want Eddie to have screentime and arcs but again, I don't want the little time we DO get to be wasted on some random side character! And lets be honest, there is no person they can introduce at this point that can compare with the relationship Buck and Eddie have already built and the ways in which they are the perfect partners for what each other needs. So the options are to a) cut down on seeing that relationship so their new het ones don't look so shitty and lame in comparison, b) have these women be mostly just Blurry Girlfriends in the background with no personality or depth just to have the boys paired off so they don't have to do Buddie while still centering their relationship so people can't call them out for not committing to Buddie because their "friendship" looks basically the same, or c) give them LIs that are basically the other's personalities transplanted into a female body in order to have the relationship be anything close to what Buck and Eddie need in a life partner. These are all terrible options, and I hate them, more than I hate the idea of them ending up single even though it undercuts their own narrative set up for the characters but that's a cop-out too.
ANYWAY
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 to everything about Buck's 700 shitty arcs this season while everyone else is mostly twiddling their thumbs. KR is literally the worst at pacing and planning, and constructing a season with any kind of flow. On the bright side, Ravi is coming back and Chim is going to get to do something! I'm so excited! I was really hoping for more of him and Bobby teaming up last week because the little crumbs we got were GOLD.
I did have a very emotionally rollercoaster-y week and the show being Like This absolutely Did Not Help, but I am making it work. Mostly with loooots of fic. Cheers friend, lets see if we can make it through the finale intact, if Buddie dreams can make it through the finale intact, and if the SHOW can make it through the finale intact with how these renewal negotiations are going.

Book 1 Closing Thoughts
Before starting my Book 2 re-watch, I thought to do a little reflection on Book 1, especially in the context of my totally objective Jerk Point scores.
I was not at all surprised that Zhao won the Book 1 Jerk Point competition, but I was surprised that he only snatched it at the finish line. I think until those final episodes before we realize the true insanity of Zhao's plan, he just felt like an arrogant jerk with some creeper vibes, but he really took his crazy from like 5 or 6 all the way to 11 at the end.
Aang's second place, and him leading up to the final episode, is probably controversial, but I totally expected myself to be annoyed with Aang.  A lot of it is rooted in my dislike for Kataang and the way that relationship is framed. Whenever I see Aang wistfully pining after Katara, and Katara just isn't reciprocating, I personally find Aang irritating in those moments. I hate this framing of 'waiting for Katara to come to her senses and realize how great Aang is for her'. I'm sorry, but their friendship moments are FAR more convincing and enjoyable.
That said, I was pleasantly surprised how almost nonexistent Kataang was in this season. It's possible to watch the entire season without realizing that it's something they're going to lean on heavily going forward. There really was next to nothing.
Ozai earned third place in Jerk Point standings all due to one appearance. That's impressive in itself.
I expected myself to be more annoyed with Iroh, but he left me more confused than annoyed. He doesn't really offer Zuko much of a moral guidance. Most of the time he doesn't do anything at all. I honestly don't know how to characterize him because his motives are so enigmatic and I constantly ask myself why is he even there. If it's to look after Zuko, then he's going about it in a very weird way.
Zuko got way less Jerk Points than I thought he would, but I'll be honest with you - as a villain, he really is very soft. He only has very few moments that made me go 'asshole' at him.
Some characters didn't get any Jerk Points. That Katara was one of them should not be a surprise. If you expect her to get Jerk Points in Books 2 & 3... you've probably subscribed to the wrong blog. This is the 'Katara can do no wrong blog'.
Sokka not getting a single Jerk Point surprised me much more. I remember watching the show on Netflix 2 years ago and finding Sokka a bit insufferable in Book 1, but now upon re-watch, I don't know why, but I just came to appreciate him a lot more. Now, will Sokka earn some JP going forward? It's not impossible. But don't expect him to earn a lot. I have a newfound appreciation for Sokka that will probably shield him.
Now, who's going to win the Jerk Point competition for Book 2? I mean, it has to be Azula, right? She's the main antagonist, after all. Well... it might not be quite that clear cut. Long Feng is not in the show for very long, but he does some heinous shit. Also, Iroh will probably have more bad moments in Book 2. Also, Toph is coming in, and I remember her getting on Katara's nerves, which automatically means that she's getting on my nerves as well. I remember Kataang getting pushed more heavily in Book 2, so I will probably continue to be annoyed with Aang. There seem to be a lot of contenders for the Book 2 Jerk title. :)

I haven't fully watched the new Higurashi yet (you can include spoilers for OG higurashi and the sequel in your answer, it's fine!) but from what I've heard and seen myself, Satoko was extremely out of line towards Rika and nothing Rika could've done could justify how Satoko basically abused and tortured her. The fact that they reconcile at the end puts me off because how can you forgive someone who forced you to relive your worst traumas?
*MAJOR SPOILERS FOR 2020-2021'S "HIGURASHI GOU" AND "HIGURASHI SOTSU" ANIMES HEREIN*
I wasn't sure how to speak to this Ask because the Ask itself is a massive spoiler (and obviously it's possible some people here might not be wanting that), but it's also Anonymous. So I have to answer it publicly if I'm even gonna respond. I guess I'll just roll with the huge spoiler warning there, put a bunch of spoiler tags in, and hopefully that'll do enough.
God how I hate Gou and Sotsu, though. *sigh* It's not the sequel story I hate the most out of any sequel ever, but it's definitely one of those sequels that... any time I go back to the original, it's tainted by the knowledge of what canonically came later. It'll never not be damaged by these things. Taking a story that had a beautiful and satisfying ending for decades, then going back to add a new sequel that not only undoes the triumph of that ending complete but ALSO radically reinterprets one of the beloved characters into a villain now is just... SUCH a "fuck you" to everybody who ever loved the original.
Tumblr media
There’s nothing like hugging it out after 100 years of physical and psychological torment.
But that long-ass video I recently linked to also taught me a lot of things about how it turned out the way it did — and where you can go to get a better version of the same basic tale. Though even then, I still have a lot of misgivings.
For starters, I learned that franchise author Ryukishi07 wrote down the basics of what was supposed to happen in every arc and the overall narrative for the anime team at Passione, and then he let them handle the details. The actual scripts were handled by the writers at Passione, and Ryukishi07 said he was frequently shocked and surprised by what they did in the storyboards and scripts. He wouldn't have written things that way himself. But because he A) believed they were the experts when it came to animation, not him, and B) has always embraced other creators coming in and giving their own narrative spin to the 'When They Cry' multiverse, he always signed off on/approved anything they showed him, no matter how much it deviated from his own vision. Which, I'd argue? Was a big mistake. Because when you're giving us the first official full sequel to such a beloved story solely in anime format - there's never going to be any other "Ryukishi's version"? That means you need to make sure the characters are being done right and the events make sense. You need to make certain it's all true to that original tale. No, maybe this isn't the medium you're comfortable writing in. But that doesn't mean you can afford to look the other way when you think "Wow, that's completely NOT what I intended" over and over.
Secondly, I learned much more about the manga adaption of "Gou" and its own unique take on the sequel — which is called Higurashi Meguri. By the time Sotsu was finished airing, the "Gou" manga was just wrapping up, and the mangaka embraced the opportunity to do take the same framework and tell a version of the story that is significantly different. The result is that the manga is much more in line with the characters and tone of the original story than the anime was, because the author has seen how much the anime didn't work and is able to course-correct in a million small ways. The same basic events are there, sure. But it's all about a hundred times better-handled so far.
HOWEVER... there are some flaws that are going to remain inescapable. When you end one season/series on a cliffhanger that you proceed to ignore for like 13 episodes before you get around to dealing with it in the second season/series? That’s stupid, and it’s an example of something kind of inescapable in the structure of the damn thing. More importantly, as far as I'm concerned? The entire concept of this sequel was doomed from the fucking jump. Getting a version with better writing and better motivations and more believable actions on the part of the characters is GOOD, sure, but that doesn't mean it's not STILL a huge "fuck you" to have these basic events take place at all. Y'know? Like, I respect Meguri, sure. But I still don't particularly WANT it.
Tumblr media
...this is all a really overlong lead-in to my point, which is that: In Gou and Sotsu, they sometimes try to imply that Satako isn’t really in control of her own actions, Or at least, the Satako we’ve always known isn’t in control? There’s seemingly a new, second personality in there - a “witch” who may or may not have been brought into existence by her interactions with Eua inside the sea of fragments. (And again: The whole “a god-being inside the physical domain of the the sea of fragments is communicating with Satako to cause her to become corrupted” is something I find inherently bad and dumb that you can’t really ignore in this story.) So this arguably removes some degree of guilt from Satako? (This is heavily muddied by how the storytelling handles the whole “Dual Personality” aspect in a bad way, but that’s another can o’ worms.)
On the flip side, the alternate telling of these events in the Higurashi Meguri manga takes this idea much farther, making it far more blatant that Eua damages Satako’s mind against her will and forcibly manipulates Satako into her new corrupted form. Satako is far more of a victim in Meguri than she ever is in the anime; it’s obvious that she’s not in control of anything anymore. She’s just a puppet that Eua is using to ensure that Rika continues to be “interesting.”
So I guess my point is, yeah, I get what you mean about the anime in particular. I guess this is supposed to be an exploration of how their relationship became too co-dependent, but it really just makes Satako look like a psychotic asshole. But in the manga? Well, Meguri isn’t finished, but at this point, I can far better understand why someone would forgive Satako in THIS scenario. It really isn’t her fault that this happened to her OR Rika.

The Walking Dead: Rest in Peace (11x24)
So... this finale suffered majorly for one big reason: the spinoffs next year. Let's just dive right in, shall we?
Cons:
Think about it. If this had been a true finale, if this had been the end of the universe of this TV show, we would have gotten so much content that the fans have been waiting to see. Instead, it's all teased out for us, trying to force us to tune in next year to see more Negan and Maggie, Rick and Michonne, Daryl... it's too damn much, y'all. I won't list all the missed moments, but if these spin-offs didn't exist, we definitely would have gotten Rick and Michonne reuniting with their daughter and son, right? A thing I think we've all damn well earned seeing? And if Daryl wasn't going off on his own without Carol, maybe they could have resolved that relationship in a way that would have made the fans happy to see. This is a finale. I want to feel big emotions, I want full cheesiness turned all the way up to eleven. I cannot believe that they had Rick and Michonne show up at the end in the form of letter writing, still not reunited, and we got no catharsis on any possible Rick reunion. With Michonne, with Judith, withDaryl? That man lived in the woods for half a decade being sad about Rick's death. I wanted to see them reunite, for fuck's sake.
But even setting aside the things I really wish we could have seen that just weren't there, there were moments that should have packed a much bigger punch, but were instead glossed over. The biggest one? Judith, in a moment of delirium when she believes she might die, tells Daryl that Michonne left to go find Rick, who they believe to be alive. I had sort of forgotten that Daryl didn't know this information, but it makes sense: Judith says she never told Daryl because she didn't want him to leave too. This should have been ahuge moment. Daryl's love for Rick and his family is a cornerstone of his character; the revelation that Rick is still alive should have been earth-shattering for him. And, honestly, if they're going with all these spin-offs anyway, that should have been the impetus for Daryl to leave, not some vague idea Maggie has about wanting to find out what's out there.
And just, in general, this episode didn't have the epic-ness that one would typically associate with a finale of a show that's been on for eleven seasons. What are people going to be talking about in the aftermath of this? There was one big main character death, and it was well executed which I'll talk about in a second, but other than that it was all very low energy, nothing big, no huge status quo shifts in the way we understand this universe. Okay, so we defeated Pamela, great. What proof do we have that another group of baddies isn't just going to come out of nowhere and be evil nearby, leading to more chaos for our surviving characters? The problem with the spinoffs is that nothingcan change in any sort of permanent way, because, gosh, what if we want to bring Lydia back for a cameo on one of the five other shows we're making? What if we want to do a story about Alexandria being in peril again and Rick and Michonne showing up to save it? What if Eugene and Max go on a trip to New York and pop up in this other series? This episode didn't feel like a finale, it felt like instructions to tune in for more of the show next year.
Which, to be clear? I will not be doing!
Pros:
So yeah, this wasn't really the magical strong finish that fixed all of my problems with late-stageThe Walking Dead. I'm not sure how it could have been, but still. That said, I'm honestly an easily manipulated person when it comes to sentimentality on TV shows, so I did get misty-eyed at a few points in this finale, especially with the really cheesy stuff like Rick and Michonne writing letters to their child and reminiscing about all the people they've known over the years, dead and alive. We see a montage of faces, and while hilariously a few of them I couldn't even remember, it was nice to see people like Beth, and Sasha, and of course Glenn and Carl, Lori and Shane... Hershel... the list goes on. The idea of ending the show with the characters enforcing that they are the ones who live, and they will continue to strive for that life, was a good moving capstone, and as close as I got to feeling like this show was a true finale to anything.
I have all the feels about Judith, honestly, and I loved seeing Daryl and Carol working to save her life, fretting over her. She really is a daughter to them both in so many ways, and honestly the moment with Daryl in this episode that got me the most was when he hugged Judith goodbye and asked her to look after Carol for him. They have such a special bond, it makes me a little weepy.
Daryl and Carol's goodbye felt a little tacked on, especially Carol saying "this will be good for us", because obviously we know Carol was originally supposed to be part of Daryl's spin-off but no longer is, and yet they didn't really replace her leaving with Daryl with any reason as towhy. Just a vague sense of her helping out with the home communities, replacing Hornsby, I guess. It didn't feel like a very satisfying wrap-up for either character, but Carol especially got the short end of the stick, as she has so often these last few seasons. Oh, but wait, I'm in the "pros" section, aren't I? Setting all that aside, these two have such a special, gorgeous relationship, and getting to see their goodbye, the "I love you"s and the hug, did warm my heart, even if I could have wished for something a bit more.
A few details I enjoyed: Ezekiel and Mercer being the new governor and deputy governor of the Commonwealth. That's fitting! Eugene and Max having a baby named Rosie (this is so damn cheesy but you know what it made me wanna cry so I'm going to let them get away with it). Yumiko and Magna getting to have a kiss, reuniting. Sure, yeah, I'm into it. Negan sending Judith the compass.
Oh and speaking of Negan, you couldn't pay me to watch the show with Negan and Maggie next year, BUT, I did like that Maggie told Negan about Glenn, and basically said "I can't forgive you, and being around you makes me remember him in his final moments of agony, which I don't want to do." It was a powerful scene and the first thing from Maggie since her return that's made me feel connected to her.
Let's talk about the deaths, shall we? I was surprised to find myself really emotionally affected by Luke's death, not because I give a shit about Luke as a character, but because of the way his friends tried desperately to save him, crying and screaming, and then all broke down sobbing as they had their final moments together. Watching that scene, the pain and desperation of it, there were just a lot of really good performances happening there. It made me realize how often the deaths in this show were either really sudden for shock value, or else drawn out, slow, and somber, with grieving characters clearly upset but also restrained and in control. This was true wild, panicked, grief, and it really made me feel the chaos and pain of the situation, while keeping me focused on the true issue of the moment, which was making sure Judith was going to be okay.
And then there's Rosita. I'm not sure I've ever cared about Rosita quite as much as I did in this episode. It was a strong way for her character to go out, and again, one of the only pieces of the episode that made it feel like an epic finale to me. I loved the fake-out, I gotta say, where she falls and you think she's getting ripped to pieces, but then you see her spring up and fight like a total bad-ass and get out of an impossible situation. And then later, looking at Coco, who she's rescued at long last, we have Eugene come in, and as he's starting to discuss future plans, it slowly dawns on him all that Rosita is not saying. She was bitten, and it's not something they're going to be able to fix.
There was just a lot of good delicious angst here. I've never bought Gabriel and Rosita as a romantic pairing, but I found his grief and gentleness really moving. Judith's facial wobble when she realized Rosita was dying... man, this show has some really hit-or-miss writing sometimes but I honestly think on the level of acting, the girl who plays Judith does an incredible job. It was so moving to see Rosita getting to have these final moments with people, enjoying a dinner with them all even as she knows the end is near. I mean, yeah, it's cheesy, but as I've been saying, this is a finale. Iwant the cheese. Pile it the fuck on, don't hold back. Rosita's death, and specifically her final moment with Eugene, really, really got to me in a way nothing else in this episode did.
So... yeah, I think I'm going to wrap up my thoughts on the finale there! Seeing Rick and Michonne was kind of cool, but it was also a little insulting, basically a trailer for their spinoff show playing at the end of this one. And a lot of this final season has felt like the writers were more excited about their fresh new ideas for new shows, rather than this lumbering, undead behemoth of the show that stayed on the air long past its prime. And that's a bummer, it really is. Still, props for making me get all emo about Rosita dying. Never thought I would have cared much one way or another.
7/10
So now comes the impossible task of trying to sum up all ofThe Walking Dead in a single rating out of ten. I can't grade this based on my favorite season or least favorite season or any of that, I have to try and find something that I think is representative of the whole. Here's what I'll say: this show shook up something in TV. It's part of that whole Golden Age thing everyone always talks about. The Walking Dead was enshrined for a time along withBreaking Bad andGame of Thrones as THE event TV that everyone was watching and talking about. And whileBreaking Bad maintained its sanctity by bowing out after five seasons, and whileGame of Thrones majorly and famously threw itself into a dumpster at the end, I think we have something a lot more muddled here. I certainly don't care enough to watch the spinoffs, but I do care enough that I know I'll poke around to find out what happens to certain favorite characters of mine after the show ends. I don't think this is a final season or finale episode that retroactively ruins anything about what was once great on the show, so it has that going for it. What I'll always remember about this show is the characters who stuck with me: Daryl Dixon is my number one, but Carol too, Michonne, and even later-season characters like Judith and Connie made a surprisingly strong impression on me. I think overall this show deserves a lot of praise for what it was at its best, but I also can't ignore the fact that it's been far less than its best for quite a long time.
7.5/10

HI BABE SO NOW THAT YOU WATCHED IT..TOGE. THATS ALL. I loved seeing him use his quirk more and the part where he was doing all those backflips!?? Also the movie made me like maki even more I'm rooting for her so hard and THE SPLIT MY GOD 💀 hate to admit it but it also made me like gojo a little, like not enough to thirst over him but him genuinely caring about yuta and itadori is pretty cute
I WILL DEFINITELY ADD SOME DABI CONTENT FOR YOU OMG 😍 I'll probably also add a shigaraki one too since hes my second favorite and I think you'll like him. In some ways he kinda reminds me of mahito, like I've seen some people describe him as almost a man child in the beginning of the anime before he turns into a real monster. I dont really keep up with the manga but apparently hes really fucking shit up right now 👀
So literally the only content I've seen of dio is the tiktok you sent me and somehow I had a dream of him last night where he had me in a mating press so I thank you for influencing that experience and I WILL start watching it soon lol
Also now that you finished mugen train (I'm guessing?) CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT ENMU 👀 HES THE PRETTIEST OF ALL BOYS I LOVE HIM 😭 as of right now hes probably my second favorite demon but that could definitely change. And idk about rengoku but I would turn into a demon without a second thought for akaza, I would let that man do unspeakable things to me lol.
And as for my favorite demon... I HAD A HEART ATTACK SEEING YOU POST ABOUT GYUTARO IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS DAY AAAHHH ! Not only is he my favorite demon but he also might be my second favorite anime character ever, like you have no idea how hard it was for me to not talk about him or spoil anything and stuff every time we talked about demon slayer lol. I'm not sure how far along you are and what episode you're on so I won't say much other than hes my angel and I adore him 🥰 also idk who his voice actor is but I am way too attracted to his voice, the whiny psychoticness really does it for me lol 🥵
Also the fact that you started kinktober WITH THAT FIC HOLY SHIT YOURE STARTING WITH A BANG 👀 I love that it started out with reader being in love with mahito bc I definitely would. The whole feeling special is really calling me out lol. I literally screamed when reader looked over to see choso and haruta watching and jacking off omg and I was NOT expecting geto to put it in the same hole like it was such a pleasant surprise that I dont get to read about often lol. I'm saving your other kinktober fics to read this weekend when I have more time to really sit down and enjoy them but I'm so excited like I cant believe you have a fic like this for every day of the month that's insane 🖤
The muichiro tiktok 🥺 hes not talked about alot but I would actually die a little if something happened to him he needs to be protected ❤
ME AND YOU ARE ON THE SAME WAVELENGTH I SWEAR I HAD THAT GIYU TIKTOK SAVED TO SEND YOU LOL. I literally have a folder of tiktoks to send you and that was one of them where like the second I saw it I was like I neeeed to send this to doll lol

Anime Update V2 66
Vinland Saga S2 - Ketil and his sons went to offer a tribute to King Cantue and ran into Leif Erikson while there, who is accompanied by an orphan slave he bought and named Thorfinn. Conversation sparks the idea that the Thorfinn currently owned by Ketil and at work on his farm might just be the Thorfinn Leif has been searching for, but then things start to go south when Olmar fails a swordsman test presented to him by Canute, leading to him getting mercilessly bullied and mocked about it by others in a very uncomfortable way until Olmar snaps and challenges the lead bully to a duel to the death. Due to Thorgil encouraging him and some sneaky interference by one of Canute's secret agents, Olmar gets his first kill, which sets off a complete bloody massacre of the king's other men by Thorgil, and it horrifies Olmar. Upon learning that this entire arrangement was a trap by Canute so that Ketil could be arrested and forfeit his farm land, the family flees and escape by boat with Leif who demands for Thorfinn in exchange. Meanwhile, Canute is getting prepared to march on Ketil's farm with over 100 men to take it by force. Fuuuck!
Hunter x Hunter - Aside from Killua delivering a glorious decapitating blow to Rammot, a brief fight with Cheetu, getting to see the mindless zombie that Neferpitou made from Kite, and Netero preparing for the "final showdown" with Meruem and his ant forces that I already know by this saga's length is going to be far from that, there wasn't much here that grabbed me enough to talk about.
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works - Big fight with Caster and Kuzuki, Caster is betrayed and killed by Archer, but Archer still isn't back on Shirou and Rin's side. He wants to fight Shirou, and kill him!
Re:ZERO - Got done with the entire rest of Season 2, which in itself should speak to how high the quality was. In addition, after the episodes that gave us backstory for Emilia and how her forest and her people got frozen, I watched the second OVA, The Frozen Bond, which centered on when Emilia met Puck and their contract was forged, being a far more serious and dramatic piece than Memory Snow, even including actual action, peril, and villains in it. There's altogether way too much content, twist, turns, and great character moments for me to cover here, so I'll just say that I absolutely loved it all, Subaru and Emilia are everything, Echidna is bae despite her cold amorality, Garfiel and Puck are both Good Boys, Regulus and Pandora can go fuck themselves, Betelgeuse deserved better, Roswaal deserves worse, and Beako deserves the fucking world.
Symphogear AXZ - Got two episodes done with, the first giving us some more character focus for Shirabe, making it automatically work for me, though I also got invested in what was going on with the Illuminati's side of things and felt it so tragic that Prelati had to get killed (for real this time) like that, just when she was out to warn St. Germain about Adam's treachery. The following episode saw St. Germain fight against Hibiki and Kirika while expressing her desire to end all oppression in the world, but she ends up opening her heart to possibly finding another way...and that's when Adam and Tiki show up to let us know that shit's about to get real. The episode finishes with Hibiki and St. Germain united in saying "Even so!", which I'd not even realized Hibiki says a lot until it got pointed out in-universe.
Eureka Seven - Saw the remaining episodes set in the mines. There was a part near the end of the first one where Dewey announces his plans to his new unit, but that's not really gone anywhere yet. Renton and Eureka still have some awkward tension between them, but this time it's due to Eureka constantly getting physical and mental stress from being around these mines, to the point where she feels Renton should probably be entrusted with the Nirvash full time. After this one incident where a miner tries to make off with the Nirvash, Eureka hits her limit and goes off on her own inside the Nirvash just as the military launches an attack against Gekko State. When Renton recovers her, her body has melted into this almost putty-like state and is in critical condition when Renton activates another Seven Swell to escape the collapsing mines with her. Through all of this, Holland is just being the world's biggest douche, beating up on Renton, ordering the Gekko to leave Renton and Eureka to possibly die in the mines, and straight up making a death threat to Renton for if he should ever get inside the Nirvash at the end. Funny thing about this is that as the episode closed out, "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" was playing on my radio. Couldn't help but apply it Holland and think about that one joke from Nostalgia Critic's Eight Crazy Nights review: "And given the choice between the two of you, I'd choose the...uh....oh Hell no, I'm going with the green guy!"

❄️ The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague Review! ❄️
Hello! Welcome to a new anime review, the first for the 2023 winter season! Considering I won't be writing as many of these, I needed to make this one count, so here's The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague!
Tumblr media
Well... I fell in absolute love with this anime. It had been a long time since an anime last made me so happy.
The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague finished airing just yesterday, and it has twelve episodes. It's a romance/adult-cast anime with some humor and (minor) fantasy.
I'll have trouble explaining why I adore this anime so much. I know not everyone will find it as unique as I did, but it made me so happy when I watched it, y'know? It's wholesome, pure, realistic, heartwarming... What more am I supposed to ask for?
The plot is straightforward: two MCs work at the same company and become friends. Then, they both realize they have feelings, and the anime focuses on showing scenes that highlight these growing feelings.
Of course, it doesn't sound like much, and it honestly isn't. But it's so cute and wholesome that I couldn't help but love every minute. Those are some everyday life scenes, and maybe it's why I enjoyed them so much. Just people being happy around one another.
Unfortunately, the first episode is on the slow side, so I'm afraid it might turn people away from this anime. Huge mistake! Everything from episode two onward is straight-up excellent!
It might not be the first point people mention when discussing this anime, but it also has great humor. The fact that one of the MCs is pretty reserved makes for some comedic relief with the other protagonist, especially with his inner thoughts.
The leading duo, Fuyutsuki-san and Himuro-kun, are just fantastic, especially together. Their characters perfectly complement each other, and they're so darn cute! Again, it's simple, but it just works, so I will only ask for that. Love these two!
The rest of the cast is also really good! They have nice chemistry together and with the MCs, and the second duo is delightful, too! They all get at least one episode of attention, too, so there's a bit for everyone.
Artistically, this anime scores many points with some gorgeous scenes. It has moments when it looks nothing short of superb, and there is not even a single scene that's poorly animated. The colors are magnificent, too.
In terms of music, this anime has some really catchy themes. Both the OP and ED are great, too, on top of being visually pleasing to look at. It definitely matches the tone of the story at all times.
So, yeah, for all these reasons, I fell in love with The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague. It doesn't seem like much at first glance, but it's a hidden gem if I've ever seen one. Thanks to Zero-G and Liber for the fantastic work. Please give it a shot.
Down below is the tierlist for the characters in this anime. Thank you for reading this review!

I just realized that no matter what the writers do with Theodore he's going to suck. He's portrayed as the only good headmaster? Its been stated that Shade is the only true source of authority in the Kingdom, so why is he praised for having sole power when Ironwood was demonized for it? He's actually a villain, well join the rest of the headmasters they made evil so the "heroes" can look good.
Yeah, it feels like another case where they've backed themselves into a corner. For me personally, if Theodore goes the Good Headmaster route I'll be frustrated for two reasons. First, because the show has done absolutely zero work to establish him as this outlier. What has Theodore done to assist Vale post-Fall of Beacon? (At least Atlas was raising funds, even if it was through Jacques specifically.) Did he do whatever jobs Ozpin assigned him in the event of his death? Why hasn't he checked in at all, especially after the world learned of Lionheart's death? (Obviously CTV is down, but we know that people are still sending each other letters.) Why wasn't he a part of the original inner circle? Why didn't he come to the Vytal Festival? What has Theodore been doing for the last eight seasons as the entire world went to hell? Obviously, the answer to all these questions is that he was a character who didn't exist/only existed in Myers' books until now, but that's exactly the problem. How are we supposed to buy into the idea of him as the sole, untainted Headmaster when he hasn't been involved in anything for the story's whole run? It's real easy to not mess up and earn the wrath of the main cast when you've been on the sidelines this whole time. Yet Volume 8 already started leaning into that expectation. We're supposed to cheer at Ruby telling Remnant to turn to Theodore in their time of need... despite Ruby also knowing nothing about him. He could be a liar like Ozpin. A traitor like Lionheart. A abandoning killer like Ironwood. Obviously, I don't agree with these assessments (Lionheart aside), but the show obviously does, so it's super weird to have the cast acting like Theodore is intrinsically trustworthy. Ironwood wasn't, a guy they had actual, personal connections with, so why is this unknown stranger being put on a comparative pedestal?
The second reason why I wouldn't be a fan is just a different take on the point above: Theodore isn't a character yet. I mean, he is in the book, but we're talking about the webseries where he doesn't exist outside of one, maybe two lines of dialogue. So why do I care about him? I might come to care about him, but right now it's frustrating that the show is potentially setting him up as an ally when the story flat our refused to do that work with three other characters we already knew. We had Ozpin since Volume 1 (the first episode!). Ironwood since Volume 2. Lionheart, though comparatively not developed in the same way, got his own scenes and much more talk surrounding him. The story got fans emotionally invested in these characters, to varying degrees, and then decided not to redeem two of them, killed them off, and has left the third to beg forgiveness after being forgotten for three volumes. RWBY didn't support characters that large chunks of the fanbase enjoy, but it might support a currently nobody character that no one outside of book readers even knows about? I'm not interested in seeing a Good Theodore, or a later redeemed Theodore, because as of right now I don't care about Theodore, period. Introduce him back in Volume 2 with Ironwood and then yeah, we'd be having a different conversation, but as it stands the cast is too bloated and if the story was going to have a "Headmaster of a school becomes our best ally in a time of need" plot, why not do that for the developed Ozpin or Ironwood who are already immersed in this tale?
Which just leaves Theodore finishing out the All Headmaster Are Bad set and yeah, that's not particularly appealing either. And honestly, I get what a lot of non-critical fans would look at that and read it as a bad faith take. Oh, so you're not happy with anything then. And honestly... kind of? But that's not because I'm dead-set against RWBY as a whole, it's because RWBY has crafted a situation where none of their options work. They got themselves into this mess and I don't think fans are unreasonable for disliking the end result of that. Stupid comparison, but I messed up a knitting project the other day and the pattern ended up looking pretty bad. If I eliminate the choice of tearing it all out and starting over again (a reboot), then my two options are to either a) continue with the incorrect pattern so that it's all ugly, or b) fix things going forward, but then I have a project where half looks great, the other half terrible, and that first half just makes you go, "Why can't the whole thing look like this?" That's where RWBY is at nowadays. Making Theodore a well-developed, complex ally is the improvement RWBY needs, but by introducing that now, eight seasons in, we make what came before it look even worse, generating that frustrating question, "Why couldn't you have done this work two volumes ago?" What RWBY needs is what I did with my knitting, a complete do-over, but since that's not happening, we're stuck with either an incorrect pattern the whole way through, or a sudden improvement that, while great, doesn't help the piece as a whole look any better. The mistake was made long ago and only tearing out that work is going to fix things.

Bakugou Katsuki is not as bad as he seems.
Okay, fine. That's a lie. Bakugou is a loud and obnoxious asshole with little to no character development and will snap at anyone who breathes on him the wrong way.
Now that that's out of the way, let's move on to why he's like that.
You all know what PTSD is, yeah? If not, it stands for "Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder". It's something that causes panic attacks, unnecessary aggression, trust issues, nightmares, anxiety, depression, and more. People will develop it after a traumatic experience. It takes years of therapy to recover... actually, most people never recover from it.
Fun fact: Katsuki canonically has PTSD. It's confirmed, and you know what? After everything he's been through, it's not much of a surprise. He's been through one tragedy after another and never seems to get a break.
When we first met Bakugou Mitsuki (Katsuki's mother) in chapter #96, we instantly realized how aggressive she was. I mean come on! She talked smack right in front of him and his teachers- in front of All Might who she knew her son was very fond of. Katsuki may be irritable, but to have your own mother backhand you in front of your own role model is a little much.
Tumblr media
Later on in chapter #165 during the Provisual License Exams, we get a little more information that only points towards more abuse- and this time it's not so verbal.
Most people paid no real attention nor gave it a second thought in these panels, but remember when Katsuki suggested to use violence against the kids? Of course, you'd look at it and wave it off as "normal Bakugou behavior", but what he says next took me by surprise:
Tumblr media
That's right. He was raised that way.
Which means either Mitsuki or Masaru (or both) had struck him in some way multiple times as he was growing up, and I doubt it was Masaru.
"Spoiled" my ass. He might have a strong quirk, but people don't turn into little monsters just by being praised. It'll definely boost his confidence, but not dramatically. This could also explain his aggression toward Midoriya. He realized how helpless he was and had power over someone else for once. But that's just a theory.
Okay, let's fast forward a bit. He's finishing up his third year of Middle School and is preparing for the UA entrance exams. He's pushed away his childhood friend to follow his own dreams and tells him to jump off the roof.
Tumblr media
Literally.
And then he walks out the door only to regret it much, much, muuuch later in the series- y'know. The "character development" I was talking about.
Next time we see him though, he gets what he deserves.
One panel he's tramping through an alley with his friends, and the next, he's being swallowed alive by the most perverted-looking slime monster I've ever laid my eyes on.
Tumblr media
While Izuku's dreams are being crushed by his own hero, Katsuki is fighting for his life in the middle of town. He's struggling, but all he could do was look back at all the dozens of fearful eyes...
Right there. Right now. Look at him:
Tumblr media
He's terrified. He's humiliated and afraid and hurt and despite all of the heroes that were there, none of them had even attempted to save him.
And this is where it really starts. This is where it all begins. Next thing we know, Izuku's running straight for him... The boy Katsuki's bullied almost all of his life is risking his own in order to save him.
You know the story from there; All Might trains Izuku to withhold his power, they get accepted into UA, and then comes the Sports Festival.
Katsuki's already made up his mind: he's gonna win. He's willing to give everything he has to show the country what he's made of, and this may be his only chance to make up for the mishap several months ago. And Monoma, being a professional at making things worse by opening his mouth, rubs salt in the wound.
Tumblr media
It was pretty easy to predict Katsuki's reaction: pissed off and more than ready to prove him wrong. He does, but it cost him his "first place" during the Calvary Battle. But that's okay 'cuz it's not over yet!
Welcome to the next and last stage of the festival: The Battle Tournament, where all the kids get to beat the shit out of each other until only one remains.
Turns out, Katsuki does win. It was a foolproof plan: get Todoroki to go all out on him so he can make a final impression before the end of the day. But it was obvious that Shouto was still unsure of himself, so Katsuki did what he did best:
He had to piss him off.
But instead of getting angry and bursting into flames like he had planned, Shouto threw away the battle at the last second, and everything Katsuki had worked for with it.
No shit he's gonna be upset! He worked his ass off to get where he was, and the whole point was to leave himself a footprint! His entire life had been dedicated to that moment, and it faded away right in front of him.
Midnight put him to sleep and he woke up and threw a temper tantrum.
Now this is was UA did wrong:
Tumblr media
Why would you do that?! They were all aware of what happened to him only a few months ago, he obviously hasn't properly recovered from it, and they restrain him in front of thousands of people. They cover his mouth and gag him, lock his hands in a tiny metal box and expect him not to go insane. Helloooo?! Wake up! He's just a kid!
Several months go by and now it's time for camp. Katsuki is tired. They all are. It's been a long day of training and training and training, and suddenly villains come out of nowhere, and nobody is prepared. And who shows up? The League of Villains, and they're after certain students...
Tokoyami escapes safely, but Katsuki isn't so lucky.
Tumblr media
Just think about that for a second. When we see Shigaraki holding a picture of him, it's the one where UA tied him up. He knows what this child has gone through and he pities him. To be honest, I think the LoV treated him much better than anyone ever has (except maybe Kirishima). They're hesitant, but they treat him with kindness. They didn't just want him for his quirk. They saw what the heroes did to him and wanted to help him get the revenge he deserved.
But when All Might showed up (more like "burst through the wall like the Cool Aid man"), Katsuki is instantly teleported in the strangest way possible... and the most traumatizing.
He chokes out this weird slime-like substance that devours him within seconds. Thankfully it only last that long, but then again, the Sludge Incident, remember?
Yeah, bet that brings back some memories.
But what must have hurt him the most was All Might's downfall and early retirement. He said it himself:
Tumblr media
After several chapters, he finally burst. He's been holding all the pain inside of him until it bubbled over and he couldn't take it anymore. So he went to the only person he could- the person he hated and yet trusted the most.
Maybe the Class 1A concert helped him in a way. It seemed like it brought him down and maybe even relaxed him a little. And something incredible happens. Something we haven't seen from him at all until now...
(From here, I'll try to keep it short to avoid as many manga spoilers as I can. That and I'm tired...)
He began to change; started to support Izuku... in his own twisted way, of course. As chapters went by, he started to open up little by little. He admitted what he had done to Izuku in middle school to All Might, which had brought him some peace of mind. It wasn't quite the apology we had hoped for, but I guess it'll do.
And during the war, he made the greatest sacrifice, finally unlocking his quirk's full potential. Despite being unable to move, he used his quirk to throw himself in front of Izuku without thinking, taking a blow to his stomach. To his stomach.
Tumblr media
He was impaled.
Holy shit.
Last time someone had been impaled was Nighteye, and he died from his wounds.
But Katsuki somehow managed to survive... And woke up ready to beat Izuku's ass if he didn't wake up.
Anyway, that's all I have to say (so far). However, I'm excited for Season 5 of the anime series! Can't wait to see our new story animated! I mean, I've been watching the episodes as they come out, but still.

Yugiri's smile is everything. She has so many of them and they all mean different things. When she's relaxed, when she's excited, when she's confused, when she has no clue what's going on but everyone else is happy so she's happy, when she's relieved, when she's proud... She has so many different smiles and if Tumblr didn't have the 10 image rules, I would absolutely gush about every single one of them in detail. Unfortunately, if I do that, all of those posts will probably be eaten out of the tag, so instead, here are my top 10 favorite Yugiri smiles so far, images included. (Pre-Revenge episode 9)
10. Season One, Episode 2: The First Smile/ 9. Season One, Episode 10: The Sentimental Smile
Tumblr media
Episode 2 is the first time we ever see Yugiri smile. Before this, she seemed relatively nonplussed or generally disinterested in pretty much everything going on. Even though she was in a different time period with complete strangers and a madman demanding her to be something she has no knowledge of, she was fairly calm. Then the first time we see her smile, it's when she sees something completely familiar. Her own face. Not only that, but she directs that smile toward the character that is going to become basically her little sister. The first one means so much and it's so important.
Within the same vein, her smile to Kotaro in episode 10 is one during an emotionally heavy moment. It's the first time he's hit an actual snag in his plans. Sakura's singular focus on the Arpino show rather than on the bigger picture of the group as a whole would have been a massive roadblock had she not realized her mistake.
Yugiri is the only one who properly realizes the reason they were sent into the mountains in the first place. Instead of simply sitting on the information, she's proactive about it and actually goes to discuss the problem with Kotaro. She wants to understand his reasoning so that she might be able to help him. And when she turns toward him, she also gives him the observations she's witnessed throughout her new life. This smile may be low on my list of favorites, but it's still unbelievably important.
...Also, when they released the preview image of this smile, my brain short-circuited for ten minutes, so it had to make it onto the list regardless.
8. Season Two, Episode One: The Professional Smile
Tumblr media
This smile isn't much out of the ordinary for what we've come to expect of Yugiri, but it's on here because this was our first look at Yugiri after basically two years of very little. None of us knew how the group would come back, how the writing team had incorporated the unexpected pandemic, how things would play out, or what would be happening. The Promo showed Tae's hand flying off to knock off Sakura's head, but as 2018 displayed, the promos can't always be trusted. This showed that, even in this new world where she's only been awake for a year, she's putting her skills to use and working just as hard as the others. Thanks to the conversation from Episode 10 of the first season, we know she was trained as a geisha which would make service work much easier than it would be for the other girls.
I don't have too much to say on this one, to be honest. I do like that she's in softer lighting, as opposed to the others who were all surrounded by harsh lighting on their season two introductions. The softer lighting lends itself well to the lack of pigment and coloration in the girls' makeup, allowing Yugiri to look like she has some color, even if she still looks somewhat pale and tired. It doesn't give her quite the same sickly look the others have at their jobs. The red dress? 100/10. Perfect decision.
7. Season One, Episode Five: The Proud Smile
Tumblr media
SHE. DOES. GYMNASTICS. She has every right to this smile! I did the math for this specific part of the episode and Yugiri got third place. The judges liked her rope aerobics so much, they shot her all the way to third place even though her distance was zero meters. It wouldn't have gotten her interviewed, but it would have at least put Franchouchou at the forefront. I still applaud Tae snagging first place, but Yugiri deserves some praise. She really did go face first into the mud on a bike and said, "Never again." She's so proud of herself. I'll be gushing about the actual gymnastics part in a different post a little later, too, but she definitely deserves to be proud of herself. I'm really gay...
6. Season One, Episode Four: The Cute Smile
Tumblr media
Originally, this was just going to be me doing some keysmash version of a squeal or something, but there's something I'd like to draw attention to. I'm pretty sure that, by this point, Franchouchou only knows two songs. Yomigaere, which was supposed to be performed in episode 2, and Mezame Returner, which is what's being performed here. Of these two, Yugiri has more experience with this one, but from what the audience had been shown, it wasn't good experience.
Memorizing the lyrics would have been the easy part for her. It's that a good portion of the dance practice was also spent helping Lily get the steps down and potentially calming her frustrations. Then the performance itself would have been a complete disaster if Junko and Ai hadn't gotten over themselves at the last minute to finally help.
This is the first successful performance of Mezame Returner we're witnessing and it's clear the group's had more practice since then. You can see how excited and happy Yugiri is here because this one is actually going well. They had a bit more time to prepare, the two lead roles were actually involved this time, and the audience also was clearly enjoying the performance. She's so happy and it's just so heart-warming to see. Yes, even with the CGI. Don't @ me, she looks adorable.
5. Season One, Episode Seven: The Sassy Smile
Tumblr media
This one also was just going to be a squealing keysmash thing, but again, I have something to point out. Look how much more confident she is now that Junko and Ai have, once again, gotten over themselves. Yugiri sees the effect that Junko stepping in had on the others and just like the rest of the group, her movements are more relaxed and free.
It's more obvious, actually, if you look at the way the other girls are moving directly after Junko helps Ai up in comparison to how Yugiri is moving. She did a spin while waiting for Sakura and Lily to finish their segment, and she could be cheeky during her own. She sensed that the tension had mostly dissolved and because of that, she allowed herself to relax and could properly throw herself into the performance. When she throws out this smile and wink, it's not actually directed at the audience. It's Yugiri telling the others that they've got this without breaking the performance.
4. Season Two, Episode Four: The Gentle Smiles
Tumblr media
I put both of these here because Yugiri's just... so... caring? So much of what she does is passive that you don't realize just how much work she puts into relieving the stress from the other girls until long after the problem has been resolved.
In the first, she's speaking to Sakura. No doubt, Yugiri probably noticed how worried Sakura was about Junko. Even though Sakura was trying not to let the others catch on just how anxious she really was, Yugiri still knew that something was bothering Sakura as well as Junko. Yugiri knew that the key to easing Junko's mind lay in placating Sakura first. She's seen what happens to them all when they fall apart and she wants to avoid that at all costs. So, Yugiri lifts Sakura's spirits and gives her back the fire and determination to make a great performance.
In the second, Yugiri is watching Junko eat. Unlike the others, it's clear Yugiri knows that Junko is in much higher spirits than when last they saw her. Junko would likely have still been a stuttering, quivering mess otherwise, but she wasn't stuttering and her actions were purposeful and self-assured. Yugiri is very observant. She would have caught on that something had happened to make Junko feel better. What makes this smile even better is that she's not the least bit disappointed. The reason she made dinner was to help Junko, but she doesn't view the meal as a waste of time. She's so focused on other people, that she's happy Junko is feeling better at all and even offers her different platters to help keep her mood up.
These are high on the list for two reasons. One, they're a show of just how much Yugiri does for her girls. Two, YUGIRI COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS HEADCANON CONFIRMED BITCHEEEESSS!!! I GOT ONE RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!!!
3. Season Two, Episode Six: The Affectionate Smile
Tumblr media
I will be completely honest, I have no idea why this one is as high as it is. I admit, I did spend three hours replaying this single thirty second scene because it's really sweet and Yugiri and Tae don't interact very often, so seeing Yugiri not only be worried for Tae, but also be immediately reassured that Tae would be fine was just something my heart didn't know it needed until it had it. The sheer level of affection Yugiri shows toward Tae is too adorable. Especially since Yugiri usually only has moments like those with Sakura and, to a lesser extent, Lily. This smile's really cute, it's in the middle of a wholesome scene, and it made me love both Yugiri and Tae that much more.
2. Season One, Episode Three: The Excited Smile
Tumblr media
Once again, an entry that was going to be a simple squealing keysmash until I realized there was something to point out here as well. This is the first smile we ever see from Yugiri that's genuinely enthusiastic. She has plenty of them, especially during her performances, but this is our first time seeing her fully incorporate herself into the group as an actual member and actually look excited to do something with the others. This was an omen of adorable things to come and damn did it deliver.
Honorable Mentions.
I'm only going to touch on each of these briefly because to be honest, there are a LOT of smiles I could've picked.
Tumblr media
The first one is from episode 6 when the group is talking about their very first meet-and-greet. Lily asks Yugiri if she's keeping up okay, and Yugiri remarks that she's taking things as they come. This was a small look into the kind of character she is. As I mentioned before, she's very passive in the way she operates, but that's to the benefit of those she cares for. This is her admitting that she doesn't want to be a problem and it's just sweet that even though Lily is worried about her, Yugiri's still highkey thinking about everyone else.
To the right is a shot of Yugiri during Electric Returner. This one is just the squealing keysmash because she looks so genuinely ecstatic, it's contagious. She's NO DAMN CLUE what happened or why they sound so different, but she is absolutely living her best second life.
The next shot comes from the beginning of Yomigaere and is somewhat of a repeat of the above. She's excited to perform for such a big crowd, she's glad Sakura finally agreed to actually participate, and she's living her best second life. Whoever animates Yugiri's CG model? I love you. I want to send you a gift basket. She's always so happy during performances.
Then comes her smile after the group finds out Sakura's memories are back. She's just glad Sakura, her Sakura, has come back to them, that she accepts her crap luck and is still willing to stay. For Yugiri, this goes under the list of Best Possible Outcomes. Her family is whole again and she's so relieved.
Last in the top row is the first full frontal shot we get of Yugiri in the Saga Jihen music video. She's so unbelievably adorable here. I wish I could've gotten her first expression, but the curtain was still rising and without photoshop, I'm not editing an image to the degree needed to get her whole face lightened. Point is, she's cute and everyone deserves to see her adorable face on the first song she got to be center for.
First on the bottom row is Yugiri looking apologetic from episode 8 of Revenge. She's so cute. It was an honest mistake and she had no way of knowing the paper belonged to Kiichi. No doubt, that was probably why she offered to help him rewrite them later.
Next is how cute she looks in big sister mode. She's wiping the mud from Kiichi's cheeks and is taking such care with him. Throughout the entire episode, she treats him like a little kid and it's likely because her role was big sister for so long that she doesn't know how not to treat him that way. It really does shed light on just how kind she is to everyone, though, that she doesn't even think about her dirty kimono and focuses on cleaning him up a little first.
Then we have her smiling at Kiichi as she remarks on how beautiful his dream of reviving Saga is. She even says she hopes it comes true. His dream means something to her. She can't even fully see it, he can't even fully see it, but they don't need to. What Itou didn't understand this whole time is something Yugiri understood immediately just from listening to Kiichi talk. They don't need to see it in their minds, all they need is to feel it in their hearts, and that's something Yugiri knows.
And lastly on the honorable mentions, because this post is already super long, Yugiri smiling while she's cooking for her guests. It was a tossup between this or the pinwheel because it's just really nice that Yugiri can simply enjoy mundane things. I chose this one because it's a direct contrast to how she was at the beginning. Before, she ate with a disinterested expression, but now, she's cooking for guests rather than just for herself. The lift in her mood is obvious, and it's something so small but so heartwarming, I couldn't resist.
I would've put the pinwheel moment anyway, but unfortunately, as a com major, formatting and design are everything and an extra picture on the top or bottom without a balancer would've thrown the whole thing off. Maybe next time.
NOW FOR NUMBER ONE
1. Season Two, Episode Eight: The Softest Smile
Tumblr media
This should have been expected. There's something genuinely touching about the fact that Yugiri really does give her everything, even to complete strangers. These girls barely know her, everyone in town barely knows her, but because her dance students suggested Yugiri go out and actually experience, Yugiri gives it actual thought. She doesn't dismiss them, she doesn't deride them, she doesn't make them feel foolish or anything like that. She treats their suggestion the same way she would if it had come from a close friend. And she does actually take them up on it.
Later, we see her come into contact with Kiichi to demonstrate that even full-on strangers aren't exempt from her kind heart, but this means more. All we know is that these girls take Yugiri's dance class, and from the way they speak when we first meet them, it's clear Yugiri has a professional wall between herself and those she instructs. But she still treats them as she would the girls back in Shimabara. It's proof that, even in the past, Yugiri really was just as kind-hearted as in the present. It's a show don't tell kind of thing that just speaks so deeply to the writer in me. I love this smile. It's everything. Her smiles are everything. She's everything.

Meant To Be Series || One For Every Billion
Episode 2. Next Time, Make it Up Twice
*Both Written and SMAU parts this episode*
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
"I'm in love with soba, oh my god!" You're still relishing the meal you just finished as you walk with Toshi and his friends to grab some boba.
Tendou chuckles, "I think you only like it because of that character in your favourite manga."
"ONE of my favourite mangas, thank you. But yes, he's so cute just quietly eating his soba for lunch. Like, I'd definitely love it just for him, but I did actually enjoy it."
Semi smiles at your excitement, "You should try it hot too, it's different."
"Yes, yes. Of course, I will at some point but I'm soo full right now I can't think of more food."
"Do you not want the boba, then?" Toshi looks over at you seriously but you're already smiling and shaking your head.
"Of course I do, that's not food, Toshi!"
"Oh okay. I'll help you pick something light if you want."
"Thank you!"
The door chimes as you walk into the shop but you pause just inside to check your phone when you feel its persistent buzzing. You had updated your twitter and your friends are giving you grief over the picture of your lunch. Yeah, yeah, you wanted to try it because you simp for icy hot boys, so what? It's good to try new things.
You're firing off a reply to their sarcastic (read: jealous) comments when the door chimes again and then you're stumbling because something just knocked into you.
"Ow- shit!" That's not your voice. You don't think you've made a sound but you don't recognize that yet.
What you do register first as you're falling forward is how you're grateful because it's definitely not the hard door that hit your back and head, and you're lucky because you really shouldn't have been standing right there. Then you realize you're about to fall on your face because your hands are frozen clutching your phone. Just as that thought flits through your head faster than your lack of a quick reaction, you strangely find yourself floating before you can face plant on the floor and thank god because, ew, germs. Also, potentially ouch.
You're a little thrown off so it takes you a moment to realize you didn't make like another one of the characters in that particular manga and develop a float quirk. No, there's a toned arm that's caught you around your waist and now you're more than just a little thrown off.
You're sure you're blushing in embarrassment as you're carefully set right side up and turn to apologize to the owner of the savior arm.
"I'm so sorry!" You hear an apology at the exact same time it flies from your own mouth and you pause because you're melting into chocolate eyes that are probably as wide as your own.
Wha- You're looking up into the face of an angel! But no, really, omg it's a seriously cute boy. And why do you want to touch his hair??
He does look like he's genuinely sorry but his face relaxes as both your eyes hold and he smiles (quite charmingly), before calmly responding first "It's my fault, so I really am sorry for knocking you over, pretty girl. I was walking backwards and didn't see you there."
You raise your eyebrows, stuck on that for a second and accidentally blurting, "Who walks through a door backwards??" in genuine curiosity before your eyes widen, "I mean, no, but it's not your fault either! I'm the one that stopped right in front of said door, I really should have just moved up before checking my phone."
His hand reaches up to rub the back of his head in that way that really makes guys look cute when they're a little at a loss for words. At least that's what you think until he says, "Maybe we can make it up to each other, if you haven't ordered yet?"
"Oi!" An irritated voice calls out from behind him, "Can you let the rest of us in before you start flirting?!"
He lets out a light laugh before moving aside and two others cute guys enter. Like, what's with the air in Miyagi?!?
"Sorry Iwa-Chan, but I needed to make sure this angel didn't get hurt falling (for) because of me." He winks at you but you're a little lost in thought because you're thinking about how you like the way he talks. It's a little like he's singing at times and maybe it's because of his melodic voice but either way, it's pretty cute. You're going into overload and you have to consciously stop yourself from holding your hands to your cheeks. You really hope you're not still blushing, ugh.
You meet eyes with the intense one and like, hello, hi, I'm here for this vibe. The guy meets your eyes before quickly flicking his away. But then you swear he makes a conscious effort to bring them back to rest on yours and politely asks, "I hope you're okay?" You're smiling in reassurance when he adds, "This idiot is trouble on legs, so I'm sorry for him."
You burst out laughing and they're looking at you in surprise so you just shake your head and explain, "I think my friends have said the exact same words about me. No, we're all good, I really appreciate it."
And thank you, mother, for your own charming smile because all three boys blush but don't look away.
Point to pretty boy #1 though because he regains his composure the fastest and pouts, "Iwa-chan is so mean to me, angel, please don't listen to him. If I do accidentally cause trouble, I swear I'm good at making it up."
"I don't know if I can say the same?" You smirk but he grins.
"So let me make it up then, and buy you some boba?"
"Oikawa." Ah, there's Toshi, a little late for backup but you guess you did fine without a wingman.
Wait, wait. The pretty boy's smile dims and he's looking over your shoulder at where your cousin's voice came from. He's straightened up and his posture kind of yells belligerent attitude.
"Ushiwaka-chan. Tell me Miyagi isn't really this small." Wow, there's a bite in his words but like, you're liking it. What can you say? You're a fan of hidden depths.
"I am surprised to see you as well. Not as surprised as when I heard you truly chose another school over Shiratorizawa."
Okay, hmm, you're looking over at the friend he called Iwa and he's rolling his eyes, so clearly there's tension.
The pretty guy, who you're guessing is Oikawa, drops his smile completely. "Well, that was fast. Nice chat, but if you'll excuse me, I was in the middle of a conversation with a new friend."
"You know Y/n?" Toshi's at your side now and sounds pretty surprised but it's not as amusing as your new friend's reaction when he looks back and forth between the two of you in a sort of disbelieving realization. What dots is he connecting, exactly? Because, you'd like to know.
"Y/n, huh? I- didn't realize you had a girlfriend..?" He's questioning hesitantly, good boy, no jumping to conclusions. Just get your feet wet, I guess.
"We're cousins." You and Toshi end up talking at the same time like twins or something and it's a little comical.
Oikawa's mouth drops for a split second before pursing his lips and addressing you, "Well, I guess I can't hold family against you. It's not like you chose him as your cousin."
You let out a wry chuckle with an equally dry grin on your face, "But I did."
"What?" He's blinking down at you in confusion so you elaborate just a little.
"Toshi. I did choose him, actually." You're highly amused at this point and you like having the advantage, so you're going to leave it at that.
He does try to push, though, you think it's curiosity since that is a pretty odd statement. "Like, to spend time with him, or acknowledge him or something? I won't hold that against you either, angel. Family first, that's sweet."
"Uh.. no." You just smirk and his eyes narrow as his head tilts. Yeah, he knows you're definitely messing with him now, he's just not sure how.
It's all good though, because Toshi's timing is on point now, "Y/n, I hope you don't mind but I picked you a drink I thought you might like."
You look over to him happily, "Really?"
"Yes.. you said that would be okay previously?"
"Of course, Toshi, I really appreciate it!" You look over at Oikawa with a sweet smile, "It was nice .. having you run into me, I suppose. I didn't get to thank you for - or maybe even take you up on - your offer, but I do appreciate it as well. So.. thank you, pretty boy, but I can't be rude and ignore my friends that I'm here with today."
He follows your gaze over to the table your new Shiratorizawa friends have grabbed for all of you. They're chatting casually but clearly looking over though you don't quite know why.
Oikawa looks a little conflicted and disappointed when you turn back to each other, so you add, "Feel free to run into me again and maybe then we can make it up to each other twice."
You can literally feel your trademark playful smile on your face so you know that's what pulls his own begrudging smile in response. Works like a charm, but it's genuine.
He studies you for a moment, "Then I hope Miyagi really is small, so I can hold you to that."
Then he looks back at Toshi with full force attitude so it's time to step away. As you walk away you hear his friend Iwa say something about telling his mom he swore. And when you hear that musical cadence of his reply but not his specific words, you can't help but look back.
They're up at the counter and his friends are ordering but, oh wow, he's just leaning back against it... looking right at you. Ahh, caught. He smirks at you, but clearly he was looking too, so you just return his smirk with a raise of your eyebrow and make sure you're the first to look away.
Leave 'em wanting more, it's a good motto to live by.
The rest of the afternoon is chill, you rejoin the Shiratorizawa boys and they explain the dynamic between Toshi and Oikawa in the most hilarious way so you're all just teasing him and laughing. You realized at some point during their explanation that you'd heard of this guy from Toshi a couple times and never thought much of it. But now.. he's a real person to you so you're definitely a little more interested beyond your cousin's innate desire to pull together an overpowered team.
Tendou also makes you recount the entire encounter from near face plant to Toshi's interruption before Semi and Soekawa have enough and decide to move on. It's even better, they have you laughing so hard and your sides in stiches from retaliating with funny stories about Tendou and Toshi or Coach Washijo impressions.
If you said you didn't end up glancing over at another group seated several booths down during the time you were there, you'd be lying. If you said you didn't connect with warm brown eyes every time, that would also be a lie. What you really couldn't say is if you enjoyed your boba or not because the butterflies that took residence in your stomach were the only other thing you noticed until you left the shop.

Behind The Scenes!
-Y/n really gets along with Semi but he reminds her of a certain someone
-She and her friends are night owls which is how they're able to respond to her so fast at even 2am or 3am their time (EST)
-We all know the show referenced right? (If not, I would highly recommend watching Boku No Hero Academia/My Hero Academia)
-The angel/devil theme might be played on a lot, her school is literally Ashwood Devils and her national league is Aurora Angels
-I like to think the characters who make those comments or use those terms in application to Y/n all realize the irony at some point, even if it's not explicitly written out in the story
A/N: I realized I forgot to add the first pic (the twt about all the Shiratorizawa reactions) to the end of the last chapter, which is where it was supposed to go. So, even though, I'll go back and fix that, I'll also add it here for anyone who's already read that chapter. Sorry guys! Once again, thanks for bearing with me while I figure out the social media stuff. Feel free to point out any mistakes to me too! Sometimes I'm creating this stuff when I haven't slept 30+ hours so... there's bound to be things I miss or get wrong :)
I also changed 'Extras' to 'Behind The Scenes'! Same concept for small thoughts that might supplement the story where you're currently at and provide background or additional commentary but renamed to fit the theme a little better, I guess. What do you guys think - does it even matter? Do you guys read any of this or just here for the fic and skip by? Genuinely curious to know (:
Aaand, didn't think I'd need this but you made my day:

Day 17 & 18 (I started making this post before midnight, and it wound up being posted after.)
S5E9 The Scoring Session
Just to tell you now, this is the last episode of the original series, but this is not the last segment.
Even if there weren't a few small sibling moments, I would've made a post about it anyway, because it became abundantly clear that this segment was made for the purpose of giving the side characters a proper farewell, in a very Animaniacs like fashion.
The premise is that their usual conductor has stepped out, so they have a replacement for the day.
As someone who's a sucker for series finales, I always pay attention to as much as I can, so I can see exactly what they did to show it's the finale.
And I was not disappointed, as the second it starts, they do a sweep over the studio lot, and into the recording studio.
Tumblr media
To drive the point home that this truly is a farewell to the side characters, they then proceed to give us this long shot of as many of them as possible, with the setup of being the ones recording today's score.
Tumblr media
Then the guest composer walks in, and it's abundantly clear he means business, as he starts listing rules they all have to follow.
Only problem being the Warners break all three of them one by one, for showing up late, interrupting him, and allegedly not being prepared for the session.
The composer introduces himself as Neivel Nosenest, which of course prompts some snickers out of Yakko and Dot, and we see THIS.
Tumblr media
I can't speak for the rest of you, but to me this is actually more of a parenting moment from Yakko, if for no other reason than I've actually seen many different parents do this with their own kids, even if that's all they do. Just put their hands on the back of the chair so they can be close to the kid.
And then the show goes on to confirm the extent of Yakko's musical genius, and I'll just let Yakko tell you in his own words.
It's like I've been saying all along: the guy could've had a very successful music career if he'd wanted it, and unlike others, he'd never let that go to his head.
They start composing the score, and as the scene played out on the screen, I managed to grab THIS little moment.
Tumblr media
Whether Dot is pushing him to go faster or actually trying to knock Wakko down so she can run him over, I say it still counts as a sibling moment, however small.
The session continues, with the Nosenest complaining about Wakko hitting a note wrong and Yakko deviating from the score.
Then they reach a part of the score where the string session has to play badly to make it sound more toony, and it causes a bunch of bad notes to wreak havoc and halt the session.
This prompts Nosenest to demand how they're supposed to finish if they keep causing problems, and the Warners respond by stealing his baton to compose the score themselves.
Yakko goes first, and though it sounds fine all things considered, Nosenest is not impressed, and snatches the baton back.
Dot takes it next, and we get the official farewell for their teacher, where on screen, they pop out of the drawer and plant a smackeroo on her, and yes, that's right, I managed to catch THIS right before they ran off.
Tumblr media
Now in wondering if they're purposely taking over as their way of sending off their co stars in a respectful way, as evidenced by Dot using Twinkle Twinkle Little Star as inspiration for the teacher's score.
Even so, Nosenest again says the music is all wrong, so Wakko takes it, and starts composing a country tune, only to have him promptly shut down by have the baton taken again.
He composes for a few moments, before Wakko steals it again and starts his country tune up again, right when there's a scene with square dancing, but Nosenest STILL steals the baton back, as a scene where the Warners steal a cart, and we see THIS.
Tumblr media
Another moment where it doesn't matter if Dot's holding onto Yakko's shoulders for safety reasons or not, I still say it counts.
Yakko finally manages to get a hand on the baton, only this time Nosenest isn't letting go, so there's a bunch of composing back and forth where Yakko gets to compose for the hippos, and Nosenest composes the Warners.
But apparently this turns out to be the final straw for Nosenest, as he finally snatches the baton out of Yakko's hand, and backs all three of them into a corner.
As they do so, we see THIS.
Tumblr media
Not even touching them, but Yakko's still holding a hand out in front of both of them to subtly tell them to not move.
They cower in fear of what Nosenest might do to them, but before he can, they reach the end of the score, and everyone applauds.
All in all, even if it's mostly a Warners centric segment, I like that they at least showed the side characters, and even the ones that weren't recording, were in the short they were scoring.
All in all, a very nice and respectful way to start off the series finale.
