Fic Writer Interview
I was tagged way way back by @endae (my beloved). Thank you for the tag!!!
How many works do you have on AO3?
19 (haha), I really gotta work on moving all my paranoid ford one shots over into a one shot series though. I have about 70 fic posts on here.
What’s your total word count on AO3
180,212. Half of which all comes from Gotham Falls which isn’t a surprise.
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Mainly just Gravity Falls.
I wouldn’t really count the other stuff I’ve done because it’s only been 1 fic, and that was it really. R.ise of the Guardians, O.utlast:Whistleblower, S.anders Sides. N.aruto and D.eath Note if you wanna go way back.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. Even Stone Crumbles 2. I Think I Saw You 3. Gotham Falls 4. A Blinded Eye for a Blinded Eye 5. Please Come
I’m pretty happy ITISY is up there since that’s kind of my ‘best series work’, Blinded Eye too, that one’s been a lot of fun to write because it’s a ficlet series.
Kind of really thrown that the Even Stone Crumbles one shot is the hightest one though, dang people really just wanted to see Ford cry huh, I can accomodate that.
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Uh... rarely.
Basically, it’s something where creators responding to me got me nervous so I didn’t generally do it as a creator myself until I found out some consider it polite to respond and since then I’ve been making an effort of doing it going forward.
I’m not online that often nowadays though so... I haven’t done it much.
Wanna emphasize tho how much I THRIVE off of comments and that I appreciate them even if I didn’t reply to them. Genuinely I’ve made fics a higher priority bc a comment revitalized my passion for the fic.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Most of my paranoid one shots wind up with angsty endings where it’s implied that Ford just has to keep Living in it.
I had one where he woke up and thought Bill had Killed A Person while he was possessing him, and it leaves off an unsettling note.
Do you write crossovers? If so, what’s the craziest thing you’ve ever written?
Rarely. I wouldn’t consider myself a crossover person, which is funny because I have one exception for that and it IS Gotham Falls (which is the stan twins from gf inside of gotham from b.atman the animated series).
For the sake of the question though imma include rp for wildest thing I’ve ever done which was rp as Chris McLean from total drama island and hosted a game of ‘rabbit doubt’ (which is an angsty rp game where 1 person is a killer and is killing the other characters until they’re the only one left or the group discovers who it is). Players included bill, some undertale characters, and etc.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
No. Worst I’ve ever gotten was slightly rude stuff.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
‘Rarely’ really is the word of the day here. Some g.ravity falls and some vamp oc content.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Nope.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No. Closest I’ve ever done has been rp. Remembered I co-wrote a fic with a friend when I was in middle school. Dual self-insert where the a.katsuki (from n.aruto) kidnapped us from our world and we wound up becoming ninjas.
What’s your all-time favorite ship?
hands down, B.illford. Manipulative and toxic is a ship dynamic I enjoy a lot.
Honorable second place B.lackice (J.ack Frost/P.itch Black) which i’ve been coming back to read fics for every long once in a while since 2013. Even if it’s only in spurts it is still technically the longest I’ve cared for a ship. (Surprisingly, I actually like this ship when Pitch genuinely reforms, kozmotis style)
(I don’t care about the vast majority of ships so not a hard competition here.)
What’s a WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Gotham F- lol no, I’m determined to not die until I finish that bad boy.
Dear Stan(ford). Unfortunately, an easy answer. I’ve never gone back to finish it really, and it’s the lowest on the totem poles out of all my wips.
There’s nothing wrong with it, and it’s got good legs, but I think the slice-of-life sort of pace makes this harder for me to write especially with it being an episodic set up which gives me nothing much to jump to between each letter.
It’s a bit of a ‘as the mood strikes me’ but I always have something higher priority and I’m more invested in so the mood never strikes.
What are your writing strengths?
I’d like to think that once I’ve got a character down that I can do their dialogue really well and character interactions. Characterization in general.
Also tense scenes.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Fluff, casual conversations, new characters, fighting.
Whenever I try anything entirely light hearted I generally fall flat and it all comes out so stocky/woody.
New characters, if I don’t Know A Character Through and Have A True Feel for them, then I just flounder all over the place. I don’t know how to write if I don’t know what they’d be thinking and feeling past about how ANY person would think/feel.
Fighting - I mean hell, common weakness, same issue as fluff/slice-of-life I just feel like I’m pushing words. Half the time I can get in a groove with it, but other times it’s - arm hit wall, punch go to face but miss.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Yeah, more than fine. If the 2nd language becomes plot important then I think you should either include translation or mark the language as multilingual, but yeah nah.
I’m someone that has to know what it’s saying even if it’s not Plot Important so I prefer the translations regardless (if google translate won’t get the point across for me).
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
N.aruto.
See above for mention of that self insert a.katsuki kidnapping fic.
We posted it on quizilla, and it’s a shame it’s gone because it was actually fun to read from what I remember.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve ever written?
.... That’s a hard decision.
My baby is Gotham Falls, always has been. I’ve reached a difficult point on it though because I’m at a point where I’m bringing in mmm 6 new characters (B.atman villains) which I’m trying to bring in over the next 10 chapters PLUS it’s going to be with fight/action scenes probably every other chapter if not nearly every chapter - both of which are really hard for me to write. I adore it probably the most and it is easily the most I’ve worked on any fic, but it’s also my biggest challenge. (And it holds some of my oldest writing which as always can hurt to read when you’re better now, but NO way am i updating 60k of old work).
Then I love doing p.aranoid ford fics, they’re my favorite go to. Writing A Prime P.aranoid Ford fic that just flows out is one of my favorite things.
Alternatively - ITISY because it’s definitely my top 5 story concepts and one of my best executions of something wasn’t a one shot.
I’m tagging @pinesbrosfalls, @fexalted, @novantinuum and whoever else may like to do this. Sorry if I double tagged and no pressure to do it of course.

How 2 RP - Part 1.5 (A little extra)
Hey everyone! Masao here~ Welcome to part 1.5, a little extra for you all, where i interview a experienced RPer, who shares their story, and give their own tips for RP. I thought it would be nice to hear from someone that has more experience then i do.
Today, we talk with:
@captainkurosolaire
A very good friend of mine who was actually one of my very first RP friends back in the days of Heavensward. Kuro was one of the first groups i joined, called Goldbrand. A pirate group that mostly focused on hunting Relics and the like. I learned a lot about RP from him, and made me really enjoy writing stories. He is also a very awesome dude and very humble. I hope our little interview helps you get motivated to RP, and to set that first step into the fantastic world of FFXIV!
My first question for Kuro was:
When you started RP, how did you start? Did you have a lot of help? Kuro: I started 6 years ago in XIV RP. I've been LARPing, I've built my own scuffed tabletop game with me and a bud, I've done WoW RP (Didn't click with me due to bad introduction to it.) As an only child, I've always had nothing but the highest of imagination's and I've always been tethered to create and build.I had tons of help. I wouldn't be here in the community without one of my ex's who drove me into it. I was a cuck. They shaped me and saw that, I was passionately nerdy about this stuff and always directed me towards this but, I was a shy bean and in a cocoon thought I’d fail or be a burden. After they parted with me for being naive and needing to harden me with heartbreak, I took a gamble for myself. Leaped in after a person named Sei took me in, I created Captain off just his glamour alone and then built off the tiny sketches with what I had in solo and overtime.Started from Gilgamesh, then went to Balmung. This was the era when Quicksands a majority of the time was filled with ERP and anything on the outskirts, were the more serious players and you had to go looking. I made a character fit and based around Quicksands and centered around the atmosphere. It felt fitting. So I went brash from being the most introvert by playing the most opposite to me. To not only challenge myself, but to force me to learn more. This overall was more productive of aiding in my conquest for building my Tabletop game, at first, it was mainly for that...Then eventually as my reputation was mainly ERP but somehow my F-list had some actual character-depth, I expanded and branched off. I was told by my Kahn'a my practical Yoshi P and lore guide. Some helpful hints and after that they practically set me up for transitioning out of just being a smut writer, even though I had a story behind each thing, I wanted to transition out. Then I met Verrine, Mishi, Thorcatte, Sun’ra, These people really put the ground-works into my story alongside Kahn'a, everywhere I turned, every person I met, they were inspirations, they were aiding me in RPing and feeling like this is my home, this is the land of the nerds and I owe them everything for letting me find this haven.Eventually another friend told me basically, why not just DM(Dungeon Master). Since I had contacts, I had the RP and creativity for it. They pointed me in that direction. Wasn't until I met my longest and really huge gratitude of an RPer in Ayla, who eventually inspired and led me into not only you. But bringing in many others who I eventually found as crew.I owe a tremendous amount to Ayla... Without a shadow of a doubt. Kahn'a too, but I could say literally, I owe everyone, four-hundred people in my head right now. From I've ever contacted or came into RP or even plotted none of their experiences have ever gone to waste. They each gave me a presence of passion. I transitioned off; led a huge DM group that was mainly done because you reached back out after I hit a downward spiral. After I left everything behind and ruined nearly all of it and lost my mojo. You rose me back like the phoenix, I eventually created a plot so massive that I could DM for like thirty individual people with the right support and people, did I fail in being a community leader or dealing with drama and involving everyone with my health and limited energy? You're damn straight. -- I failed utterly horrendously!  However -- It wasn't entirety wasn't in vain, people found their little groups and pockets in that, they met their meshes. Which objectively, that's all that matters as someone who organizes those to bring people together and in.After that... I transitioned into Tumblr more after being encouraged by people like Fair-Fae from afar, to Sei. Then worked on drumming to the beats given. To every person, even the ones that are angry emoji in the background-- I love em' their passion rubs into me and it breathes of air, gives me wings better than red-bull advertises! As someone who's dealing with an inoperable and bed-ridden rare disease, I've never been or felt more alive.I owe so much to people, and it's why I've stuck around for six years now and continue to batter up against the foul. This is why, I want to raise, boost, encourage, and rally others to be shared so they find in match-making their RP partners, and despite... I know my writing style hasn't ever been everyone's flavor, I never have ever thought of ever wanting someone not to find happiness. I couldn't give up RP at this stage. My next question would be, If you could give a tip to someone who just wanted to start to get into RP, what would you say to them? Kuro:  Know this. Getting into RP is a joke. It's really easy, you possess already every tool to be a tremendous RPer! Much better than I and I ever will be.
Short version: Just communicate. RP It's merely a Dance that can be positively enchanting, magical! -- I don't care what anyone says. ~ It's a partnership, you've got to find the people who keep up with pace and momentum, or blend with your style. You won't always find that and it's not a bad thing if that can't work. Some characters don't connect, some are opposite but they can still work. That's because it requires, one additional thing that requires: a pillar of effort. Don't let yourself be overwhelmed. Looking from the outside this game I've heard and seen, It's intimidatingly daunting. It's a lot to get into. Though this game? It's unoriginal. There isn't anything you can't create in this game, you have science, you've got alchemy, you've got magic. This game is literally called Fantasy in the title, this game has yanked and pulled off all the foundations of RL concepts, other fantasy tropes, religions, and renamed them and splashes over paint. You can do the same... Anything can be explained, I don't care what it is. People are fundamentally not grown as the exact same, I'm not personally here to be a clone trooper. Now If I want to play that, I can even do that respectively.* Look around the game visually, see if you think it can be done with the setting and place, build yourself something anything, you've got a whole box of legos don’t step on them. It’s proven constantly your creativity can be endless the more you play over time, or invest, put yourself out there. Go look into some guides, pull from a book, or google anything you’re thinking about. Again: People have styles they're different. You may appeal to being an NPC, you may like to be extended into Lore, you may not like all the fantasy, that's more than reasonable, it's all valid... There are people that feel you, they're waiting for YOU. Then you'll find people who are open-minded, you'll find people like me, I was in RP's with aliens, voidsents, normal people, WoL, like I've witnessed a lot. Listen to them, let them explain, and most often they fit. If you're too close-minded to accept then you don't need to worry you’ve already decided they’re not you, or your taste, leave them to their devices let them have their happiness, and go back to the scour. Don’t try harassing or bothering something that’s not there or ever will work. Wastes time and misery and drama isn’t worth unless it’s within stories, trust me. See for me... I’ve seen it all. People saying aetherfeeders and vampires didn't exist they cried on the forums and held a tantrum you had people say for years -- then boom RDM storyline and Stormblood came out debunked. Submarines weren’t things prior to SB despite we’ve got Garlean’s over here casually making Gundam’s. Their careers are over they played themselves -- this game is still continuing and always will if you're waiting for official confirmation from a -book- then you're going to be miserable, you're living off the backbone of a book meant to 'guide' and be resourceful in extension not to weaponize it and be a prick to people who don’t follow strictly the same ethic as you’ve so randomly chosen for yourself in standards, I hate to burst bubbles, but you’re never going to be 100% accurate, never ever. You didn’t create this game -- or it, therefore you can’t be anything but a replicator you’re just stuck either limiting your pieces or taking from an entire tub of building material. You aren't playing the book, you're playing the game. That's the real cannon, you literally visually see everything that's going to happen, you can bend it with predictions and logistical math. See XIV, they bend-over concepts of the real and made them fit or pried. I don't just bend lore… I bend it over. Why would there ever be anything that cannot be created? It's just how you interpret it, there are lazy ways to explain things, then there are thorough and detailed methods to get to the same realization of what you want to create that'll work and fit like puzzles to slots this story could’ve foretold. If done correctly more often then not XIV will follow suit in the same thing an expansion later if you stick to your wings, I’ve done it numerous times it feels like XIV has followed copied my test and then tried not to make it look obvious its because stories we’ve brazenly written together in deep-thinking. When my character is tagged IC that's it. Everything he witnesses or sees, I'm not refuting it. That's my chosen though, I see Quicksands and there's no way that place on my Balmung Shard and experiences is it clean, is it lead properly, or the official’s high representatives who totally are just fine with letting a Voidsent blow up the city-state. My character witnessed that, it’s set in stone. Though that's the option and you should always find what makes you comfortable, who makes you comfortable and consider that above all else. Often or not, everyone uses RP as an escape just as they play games. Don't sacrifice, don't lose yourself or not give self-love for what makes you passionate, don’t neglect yourself in taking control of being empowered and attaining friendships, fun, or treating yourself to something new to possibly take something lovely out of finding RP can be and make it all positive for yourself. Myself? I’m inspired by every person new and old who’s been in this game. I love it, do I bleed for it as my canvas? By the Twelve you know it! I’m only ever going to write stories and continue to build and grow, to learn. To do anything to give back. When a passion gives you life, you show that thankfulness by blazing that flame. My last question would be: Is there anything else you wanted to add or say to people? Kuro:  Nope. Rest boils to the decisions you pave yourself and if you want to take the plunge. Just know you're worthy, valid, and this place isn't and never will be one batch or selective, It’s not too late ever there’s no expiration to get into RP, there’s a reason RP last longer than the lifespan of the game’s even when they’ve hit the lowest of lows in dry content, there’s always been unity. If there's one thing this community does well it’s looking after one another. And If they fail to deliver. I know there are people like me who'd rather raise up then pound down. You got this, champs. And that was my interview with Kuro. Looking at his answers, there is a lot that i can agree with. The community of FFXIV is a very great one. If one person is down or needs help, the FFXIV community is the first one to jump up and help with what they can. Hence, its why i made this! To help you, reading this. Just remember, that there are always people out there that are willing to help you. And a person such as Kuro, and of course, myself, will do whatever we can to help those in need. Thank you all so much for the support, and i hope you all have a good day. Also! If you are a RPer, and you would like to be interviewed too, let me know! Send me a message over here on Tumblr, or add me on discord: Masao#2913. And feel free to ask anything related to RP, or even FFXIV. Hope you all are looking forward to the next one~

the hella sweet munday meme
⛅ - Do you believe aesthetics is another form of expression?
Yes - particularly in the rp sphere, very much yes.  I think an aesthetic is something used to communicate a feeling or an vibe or an atmosphere - so, looking at the aesthetic of a post, the size of the font used, the bolds, the italics, whether something is in all caps or not, the size of the icon, the way something is formatted (or not), the way the icon is made, the colors used - all of this is an attempt to better communicate the character and how they look, how they feel, how they…everything in that response, in that situation, and sometimes where mere words cannot get everything across, these additional things can.Icons lend more towards atmosphere - which I think is a bigger deal for a blog as a whole as opposed to what is posted on the dash (and icons take a bit of what the overall blog aesthetic communicates and presents that on the dash, because let’s be honest, how often do we go to a blog once we’re following someone?  Most of the time we see their responses on their dash, or, because of the new tumblr updates, we see the mobile version, but very rarely the full blog itself - and even then, you have the header aesthetic, the colors, the quotes or lack thereof, all of which is an attempt to create that same general atmosphere) - because that sort of atmosphere gives a more general and immediate idea of the character as a whole, their general vibe, kind of like how a person looks when you first see them–I guess that’s the purpose of the aesthetic.  Kind of like clothes.  Only, uh….  No, I wouldn’t say it’s less necessary, because every blog, every post, is going to have the general vibe, and sometimes that’s because there’s less aesthetic. So…kind of like jewelry.  Or hair-style.  Or bling.  Stuff like that.
⚑ - Have you been forgiven for a mistake you’ve made?
Yes.  More than once?  There’s a couple of instances that come to mind, although I’m not sure that….  It’s kind of like, we talked about it and tried to get better and that didn’t really work out, so I’m not sure how much that counts.  -shrugs-I think most of the mistakes have been lack of communication.  One of them was when I first had Jessica - a longstanding partner was upset with me for a variety of reasons and came to talk to me, and I tried to fix it (apparently inadequately), and it just...it ended up being a huge mess, really.  It was a huge mess.  And I think...initially they forgave me, so in that case, this would count.  But we’ve...since parted ways.  So.  -shrugs-The biggest mistake I’ve been forgiven for was an intentional lie on my end.  I was kind of a complete asshat about that and, uh, honestly?  I shouldn’t have lied in the first place.  That was kind of a really bad thing to have done, and I should have...I should have been honest.  Because not being honest just had this build up of issues I was having and a bunch of stupid bitterness (not even resentment) and me just being pissed at myself for being upset because it was my own fault - and the funny thing is?  I lied telling myself that I would be fine, and I wasn’t actually fine until I was completely open about it.  Like - now it’s not even an issue in the slightest.I...uh, think this is one of those things that’s better explained in private, you know? But the short answer is yes.  And I’m so glad that’s the case because I think...in that latter case, if that hadn’t been the case, I’d have...really, really regretted it.
☎ - What do you think about bias lists?
Mmmm, I used to like them, but I don’t really see the huge point?  I know that they tend to be used as a public explanation of love for a person or peoples and then get kind of used as both an encouragement for whoever’s on the list and a promo to other followers about yo, these are my peeps, you should follow my peeps, and I guess the public encouragement/note aspect is kind of cool, but the promo aspect is lost on me.  Like, if I get tagged in one, I basically check to see where I’m at, like it so that whoever posted it knows I appreciate being tagged, but that’s about it.  Sometimes I check and see if other people I know are on there, and sometimes if I’m looking for new partners, I’ll use them to try and find new friends (but that’s a rare occurrence anymore).  I don’t really post them - or haven’t in a really, really long time - and I’ve thought about it, but really, I’d just be posting it for that public promo encouragement/note aspect, and I’ve found I can do that just as well through random other means (a lot of times in tags on other promos, but every now and again in other ways, I’m just slow at it).--which is not to say I don’t appreciate them.  I just don’t do them anymore.
☘ - Is there anything that makes you instantly want to follow someone?
No.
I don’t even instafollow longtime friends or their new blogs anymore, especially if the character isn’t one I know or I think the interpretation is going to be weird (or that the blog isn’t going to last).  I like to check characters out before I follow - to at least know a little bit about who the blog is going to be - before following, so even from mobile, I have a tendency to visit the blog, get a good idea of things, and sometimes writing style (because I’m picky).But that’s more information than you asked for.  ^^;;
★ - What fandom do you consider welcoming?
Of all the rp fandoms I’ve been in, the Disney one - when I first started out - was the most welcoming to me.  It’s not anymore, though, so I can’t keep that here. Can I call the Noir fandom welcoming?  And by the Noir fandom, I mean the, like, four of us who are super fans of the show...?  Like, when I rebooted Mireille, I got SUCH a great welcome, and you know....  Maybe I should just say anime as a whole, because whenever I’ve done an anime blog or had an anime character or wanted to be involved, I’ve gotten a very good welcome and made really good friends and had no issues whatsoever.  People have been very happy I’ve been around, and that goes for when I rebooted Mireille, when I tried to have Mami be her own blog (the second time), and when I’ve had Mami on my multi, she’s gotten really good reception, so.  Even when I first started out on Elsa, one of my really good longtime friends was an anime writer, so.  Yo, give me small anime fandoms or the Puella Magi Madoka Magica fandom because they’ve been super nice and welcoming to me.
⚡ - What are the good sides with duplicates?
DOUBLES THREADS....I mean, most people don’t really do those anymore, but that is.  My favorite part about duplicates, the opportunity to do that.BUT outside of that, I think, I really like seeing the different interpretations of the characters.  Like, there’s four of us with long running Bedelia blogs, and each of us gives our own unique spin on her character - and I think part of that is really connected to when we started writing her because you can see which season and how she is in each season and which attribute is most heightened in each season in our characters.  For instance, I started writing Bedelia between s2 and s3, and in s2, she is much more anxious, that’s the attribute of her they played up that season, and my interpretation has a tendency to focus on her anxiety more than perhaps her other, equally important attributes. And they’re more than that, obviously, because we each look at her as a whole and incorporate that, but.  You know what I mean. And I love seeing the things we do agree on, and I loved....  I loved when season three was airing and being in the fandom when the season was airing and at the time, River and I were friends, and I loved being able to sit and talk about what Bedelia did in the episodes and what that meant and----  I loved being able to hash out the cliffhanger at the end of the series where she lost her leg and the different possible interpretations of that, I loved that we both loved this character and wanted to know as much as we could about her and could just talk about that and still see her differently but also just.I don’t know how to words the thing, and it’s not really an experience that I’ve been able to mimic?  Mainly because I’m rarely part of a fandom while it’s in flux, and most duplicates tend to....not want anything to do with each other.  Although I will say, that’s been a great thing with the Hannibal community, because, like I said, there are four of us, and of those four, me and Bee and River are all friends and we can be within the same space and write with the same people, and it’s like - seeing a new Bedelia and, like, come join us, be part of our Bedelia community, you are welcome here, and that’s just so great?  I just.  Really love that.
⛆ - What’s the thing about roleplaying?
I’m not sure how to answer this one, so I’m going to assume a fill-in-the-blank scenario and go from there. The thing about roleplaying is that it is hard and that it’s an entirely different form of writing and communicating than other forms.  RP mixes aesthetic and formatting and interactions and it’s not about plot, it’s all about character and who this person is and you don’t have to worry about any of the other characters because someone else is doing that, so you have free reign for all this focus in one specific spot, and that’s great, but I think there’s something to be said about...about how this is a unique form of literature - it and the drabbles and the headcanon and everything else that comes with it - that isn’t quite quantifiable because we haven’t found a way to do that yet, and maybe that’s a good thing because if we could quantify it, then it wouldn’t be half as good.
