He just mainly laughs it off but you can tell that he is so flattered

First off, I want to just say congratulations and thank you for keeping this blog alive for so long. I've been following you for YEARS at this point and it's crazy to think just how long it's been. Secondly, how do you feel about the Cullen relationship dynamic? Most people I talk to don't mind the foster family story, but just wish Carlisle and Esme were older and/or the "kids" were younger. But I much rather prefer the idea that some of them are "blood related". I always think that Esme and Edward are related (siblings/nephew and aunt), Carlisle and Rosalie are related (siblings/niece and uncle), Emmett and Alice are siblings, and then everyone else married into the family. To me it adds a bit of a foundational arguement for why they all seemingly look alike to outsiders and why there's so much "incest" going on. Having a bunch of foster kids that have sex with each other just gives me the creeps.

I think a lot of this problem comes from SM creating the Cullens kind of backwards. That is, instead of being like "okay, if we had a group of vampires living together in a family-like structure, what might that look like?" she was instead like: "So! Edward needs a sister, her name is Alice and she's psychic. He needs parents, too, a mother and father. He needs a brother, too, someone fun. Oh and I guess Alice and the brother will need partners, because true love" and we end up with the Cullens in canon.

(As an aside, I'm going to be talking mostly about the cover story going forward, as while I do think they are a family I think it's a 'family' in a looser sense than literal mother/father/kids and sisters/brothers. They used those terms sometimes but they are words for human relationships and the vampire family dynamics aren't a perfect one to one fit with the human counterparts -- ie Rosalie and Edward are siblings in that they have the same creator; but so does Esme, and none of them think of her as a 'sister.' Edward thinks of Emmett as a brother, but Rosalie obviously does not. Also birth order kind of means nothing because Emmett is physically the oldest while [until Bella] chronologically the youngest sibling. Which is all to say, it's complicated.)

I agree that they should have just said some of them were related. They do that with Esme and Rosalie and Jasper, saying she is their aunt who took them in. But that's a weird choice because Rosalie and Jasper don't look like Esme, who is a brunette of average height. They LOOK like Carlisle -- tall blonds. Of course nieces and nephews don't have to look anything like their aunts or uncle, but if you were going to go with that cover story, wouldn't it make more sense to claim they were related to Carlisle? Rosalie could still use 'Hale' if her fake mother were Carlisle's sister and her equally made up husband.

But I do prefer the sibling angle, because Esme and Carlisle are not physically that much older than their 'kids.' I can buy them having a parental dynamic in the vampire truth sphere, but they cover story makes no sense. Rosalie and/or Jasper could easily be Carlisle's siblings and if Rose insists on keeping Hale, then Carlisle could use that name or they could be half-siblings with different fathers. Likewise Esme and Edward have reddish tints to their hair, it makes sense for them to be related. They have the largest age gap of anyone in the family -- 26 and 17, so 9 years -- so they could be an aunt/nephew situation, or an older sister who looked after her brother when their parents died (I believe in the guide it mentions they have used this cover story before, when it was just Carlisle, Edward and Esme. C/Es were a couple and Ed was Es' little brother). That all just makes more sense with their ages than going with a public story of literal parents. Carlisle is 23, Emmett is 20. You can't tell me that standing next to each other people wouldn't be able to be like "hey . . . you look about the same age" no matter how old Carlisle dressed/acted or how young Emmett did.

I also think it makes sense to lean into the fact they do share some features -- the pallor, the eye color. Pretending it's all a coincidence that they adopted people who look like that seems farfetched.

The other option that I like it pretending they all have some obscure illness and that's why they look alike and that's why they are living with a doctor -- Carlisle is young, but he's the foremost expert on this made-up disease and parents send their kids to him for treatment. Maybe there's even a sun sensitivity issue which is why Forks.

Either of these options make way more sense than a 23-year-old and 26-year-old pretending to be in their late 20s/30s adopting a bunch of teenagers.

Mending What's been Broken

Summary: Edward and Bella have a different conversation after New Moon than in canon.

I was originally intending for the Cullens and Bella to talk this chapter but I’m going to be doing the discussion or big conversation next chapter!

Bella's POV

She caught me. I was dreading this. I hate to say that. I don’t want to dread a moment with my best friend. But I don't know what to think. She left me, they all did. Did they leave willingly? Did they hate the idea but did it to protect me? Hmm I guess I do need answers. And I do miss them…especially Alice. I don’t know what to think. I ran my hand through my hair, I felt stressed over the prospect of this conversation. Yes I could get more answers, different points of views and perspectives on this…situation. But I’m scared. I’m not scared of Alice or the Cullen’s I never really have been but it’s what the conversations entails that I’m scared of. She tapped my shoulder, I was deep in thought. I hadn't realized I seemed to have walked away, and that I seemed like I was ignoring her. 

I apologized, “I’m sorry! I was thinking and was deep in thought and didn’t notice.”

“It’s okay Bella.” She said, patiently. “Bella…can I talk to you?” Alice asked. And for once in all the time I had known her she was very patient. Perhaps she saw that she would need patience with me. She was always bouncing with anticipation and excitement. 

I sucked in my breath and said, “Yeah, sure. What about?” 

She sighed, “My family was wondering if after school you would meet us. We need to talk.” She had this look in her eye of desperation and hope. I think…she was desperate for me to come, for us to talk. But hopeful that I would. “Please, Bella?” She almost begged. 

She sighed again and took a deep breath, “We won’t force you into anything but please think about this.” She paused, biting her lip but then continued, “If you change your mind or something like that come around to our house after school.” She started to walk off. But then I I blurted out, “You know… I never said no.” I could not believe I just said that. I covered my mouth for a split second but then lowered it. She turned back and smiled at me kindly, “I know but I can see the future, I have seen the future and the fact that you aren’t hard to read.” She gave me one last look, the bell rang and skipped to her next class. I stood there for a few more seconds before other students started to pour into the hallway. I headed to my next class. English. He was in that class with me. I wonder if he will be there? Or is he out hunting or with his family? What will I do? The other day I felt like I knew what to do or sort of knew how to react. I knew what had to be done but now as it all is happening I don’t know what I should do. Or how to react or how to feel. I wish this was easier, I wish I had all the answers. Maybe I should go. At least I’d get closure. 

Once I arrived I realized he wasn’t there. I felt almost relieved he wasn’t there. Maybe it was the fact that I was scared. Or the fact I didn’t know how to act around him anymore. He told me he’d give me some space but how long will that be? How long do I need? What do I need to do? I felt frustrated because I don’t know what to do anymore. Why can’t this be easier? I yelled in my head. I stepped into the classroom and took a deep breath. It’ll be fine, just breathe. I chanted to myself over and over again hoping it’s true. Because I need it to be. 

It was hard to pay attention but I managed. Luckily Mr.Berty didn’t call on me, I was very grateful for that. Once the bell rang I headed out of the classroom as fast as I could. I did trip but managed to catch myself for once.

Lunch finally arrived. I sat with Angela, Eric, Mike, Jessica, Tyler, and Lauren. As usual Jessica and Lauren were chatting about the latest gossip floating around the school. I had some small talk with Angela which was pleasant and nice as usual. She was a good friend, perhaps we should hang out more. After a few minutes she turned her attention to Eric and I played with my food. I wasn’t really interested in eating today. I had no appetite. I scooted it away. Mike started to blabber to me about hanging out this weekend. I politely declined which caught Jessica’s attention. “What are you doing this weekend Bella? Hanging out with the Cullen’s now that they’re back?” 

I froze. I wasn't exactly sure what to say. I didn’t exactly say no but I was still undecided. I took a deep breath and uttered the words, “Yes, yes I am.” 

She looked confused, her smile faded and she said, “Why?” 

“Because I wanted to…?” It sounded like a question but I was just as confused as she was. What was she getting at? Lauren and Mike didn’t look very pleased as Jessica did either. 

“W-well I thought since you and Cullen weren’t a thing I’d shoot my shot.” 

“What?” All I could think was, is she serious? Like is she that shallow and uncompassionate for her friends?

Laruren looked me up and down like she was disgusted or something like that. And said, “I mean it’s not like you two are still even dating right?” 

They’re both the most insensitive people I have ever met. I felt like I was gonna snap at any moment. I was furious. Who do they think they are, seriously?  All I saw was red. I was so ready to slap them. Usually I tried to stay calm and collected but not today. I was ready to yell at them and tell them how insensitive and disrespectful that is to say to someone but suddenly I felt a cool hand on my shoulder. I turned around and met Edward’s gaze. What was he doing here? I thought he was at home? 

“Hey love, I was wondering if you would like to come sit with me and my siblings?” 

I stared at him shocked, “Well?” he asked. 

“Umm sure why not.” I think he wants to help me but I also think he doesn’t want Jessica or Lauren trying to hit on him or ask him out…again. 

As we moved away from Jessica and Lauren I asked, “What are you doing?” I whispered yelled. I couldn’t help but ask that since yes I’m probably right but still I can’t help but feel confused by all of this. 

“Getting you out of there before you did something you'd regret. “ He then continued, “I’m not trying to upset you but we can’t have you getting expelled or anything.” He joked. 

“Haha.” I said sarcastically. He brushed my shoulder as he led me to our usual spot. “But next time I’m going to stand up for myself I can’t keep letting them get under my skin. I'm so sick of it.” 

“I know but for now let's not worry about them, okay?” I nodded agreeing I’d rather not anyways Charlie probably ground me even more than he already has. Wait, how am I supposed to go talk to the Cullens tonight if I’m not supposed to go out unless it’s for school or work? 

I sat down next to Alice. I wasn't sure just how comfortable I was with sitting next to Edward yet. I didn’t want to make things awkward with him or anyone or myself for that matter. But what I do know is I think he’d understand, I think they all might. 

Surprisingly Emmett was the first to speak up, “So little sis have you decided yet?” He joked. Rosalie elbowed him in the stomach. 

I couldn’t help but laugh with him. He always knew how to relieve the tension. 

“Go on Bella, take your time.” She said patiently. I was surprised Rosalie was being nice to me? I couldn’t help but feel a bit shocked. Jasper smiled at my shocked expression. 

“Go on Darlin’ you can do it we won’t be mad either way don't worry.” He gave me a reassuring smile and sent me a wave of calmness. 

I thought about what Emmett said. It was a good question. What was I gonna do? I mean I had already thought it would be a good idea to get some answers and different perspectives so should I say yes? I think I’ll just have to bite the bullet. 

“My answer is yes.” 

“Really?” Alice questioned. She looked ecstatic. I gave her a small smile. 

“But I need you all to answer some of my questions, alright?”

“Of course.” Edward said, softly. 

“I’m going to wait to ask until tonight and I’ll let you all explain your side first okay?” They nodded. “But I want you all to promise to be quiet and listen to what I have to say carefully. Because what I’m going to talk about isn’t easy.” 

“We understand, don’t worry Bella.” Alice kindly said. 

“Thank You.” I appreciated that they were actually listening and being patient with me. 

“And one more thing?” 

“Yes?” They all asked.

“What are we going to do about Charlie?” 

“Esme will talk to him, don’t worry Bella.” Alice said, reassuringly. I sighed thankful that she saw my question coming. I didn’t want to make Charlie more angry than he already was. 

The bell rang and I stated, “I’ll see you all tonight.” They all said their goodbyes and I walked carefully to my next period hoping I wouldn’t trip this time.

Twilight Advent ‘22

Day 1 (12.1.22) - “Name five things that make Rosalie smile.”

I’m going to avoid the (very typical?) answer of “Emmett” and try to rephrase the question as: “Outside of Emmett, what things make Rosalie smile?”

Number one: I think the first would probably have to be her ~engineering~ knowledge. I can see her, in her ample spare time, being the mechanic of the family. Got engine troubles? Rosalie can fix it. A/C on the fritz? Rosalie’s already working on it. When they need to decide on (for example) a new fridge even though they don’t need one, Rosalie has at least eight choices she’s researched thoroughly and has a PowerPoint presentation of all the pros and cons of why this brand of fridge is the best and why they should avoid that brand, etc. And you better believe she calls a family meeting for these types of decisions. And, honestly, everyone shows up. I think she’s really empowered by the praise she gets from the family for her practical knowledge of, like, “Oh, Rosalie knows how to restart the wifi” (or whatever). As well as Rosalie knowing that she alone is able to take care of herself and provide for the ones she loves.

Number two: I’ve always had this headcanon that Rosalie makes at least one human friend during the school year. It’s someone (usually a girl, but not always) who’s overlooked, treated badly by the “cool kids”, and/or just someone who Rosalie “senses” might have a difficult home life and befriends. Having the “Popular/Beautiful Girl Rosalie Hale” as their friend always subtly helps their self-esteem and kinda changes the way they look at themselves. After graduating they keep in touch, sending each other letters throughout the years and that sorta thing. Rosalie is also a great pen pal and is the one who keeps the friendships afloat years later. I’d like to think that Rosalie is still friends with the girl she met in high school in 1968, you know? Obviously she’d have to photo shop pictures and she always finds a clever way to avoid the subject of “real life” meet ups, but she’s always good about sending letters and even Christmas/holiday presents. I’ve always thought that there’s at least one or two of Rosalie’s high school friends at her weddings.

Number three: Rosalie and Esme go on vacations, just the two of them, once a year. They don’t go to Isle Esme but it’s always something Rosalie looks forward to because it’s a chance for the mother/daughter facade to fade away and they simply have a “girls weekend” together. They talk about their husbands, their hopes and dreams, their plans for the future; the things they wish could change, and even what makes them sad. They simply spend time together as two women who’ve known each other for a long time. They usually go to a small town stateside and it’s never longer than five days. They rent a simple room at a mom and pop bed and breakfast, maybe spend a day shopping; it’s all very casual and no frills (because she knows “no frills” will make Esme happy and Rosalie tries to be accommodating - at least once a year). But Rosalie absolutely loves the one-on-one time she’s able to spend with Esme. 

Number four: I think Rosalie is secretly out in the world putting out patents for various technological things. Like, she’s writing (anonymous, of course) journal articles about the latest and greatest technology in the hopes some plucky astrophysicist student will use it in their research. I fully believe that, at the end of the day, Rosalie really does wanna help people and the “mean girl” part of Rosalie only goes so far. And the way Rosalie can help people from afar is by drawing up ideas that’ll help advance technology and make people’s lives a little easier. Hearing that so-and-so used some of her research to create the latest ~whatever~ really does bring a smile to Rosalie’s face. 

Number five: I mean, it’s not Rosalie if I didn’t bring up a wedding so here we go. I think Rosalie really does love the planning side of weddings. Aside from knowing that she’s going to (re)marry the love of her life, I think she really just goes all out as far as wedding themes and planning. She researches everything, has charts out the wazoo, reserves the “perfect” venue like five years in advance, and really finds comfort in knowing that her wedding will be perfect and that she did it by herself. Sometimes with Emmett’s input, but it’s mostly a Rosalie thing.

Esme/Bella: Bella brings out Esme's maternal instinct more than the others bc Bella never felt like Renee was much of a Mom. Bella confides in her and Esme loves to feel needed like that. Also they love to bake and garden together (Jake and Seth eat everything so none of it goes to waste). Bella likes Esme's calming energy bc Edward is so melodramatic all the time. They have a book club that is just the two if them bc they've tried inviting the others but every member of the family has managed to get kicked out at some point (most notably Carlisle for absolutely losing his shit in the middle of their pride and prejudice discussion).

Carlisle/Jasper: They share a nostalgic interest in history and research. They get into incredibly heated debates about very trivial (and not so trivial) things, especially from the times before they met. They also love to learn new languages together, so it is not uncommon to hear them conversing in Spanish or Japanese or Latin. Also they love strategy board games. Like too much. When they play as a family, the two of them always take it way too seriously, so they mostly just play by themselves. They have a game of risk they’ve been playing since 1994.

Alice/Emmett: Chaos. They're not allowed to hang out in the house alone together bc their schemes only ever end in destruction. In the 1980′s the two of them won the lottery 12 times using different fake names and disguises (the last time it was Alice McCarty, which was just Alice on Emmett’s shoulders in a trench coat). Alice is also very good at predicting exactly where Emmett will fall if he jumps off something. Sometimes she'll draw a big red target on a rock at the bottom of a cliff for him to try and hit. He does. They are the cause of at least half of the times the Cullen’s have had to pick up and move in the middle of the night.

Edward/Rose: For a few months once or twice a decade they are the best of friends. They are a deeply creative force when they get together. The compositions that Rosalie helps him with are his best work by miles. Edward supplies Rose with much needed perspective as she tackles different theorems and mechanical dilemmas. They mostly talk about how much they love their partners. They discovered their love of knitting through one another and will have competitions. This has broken their friendship streak in more than one instance.

Fandom: Twilight Pairing: Jasper Hale x Male!Reader Summary: Jasper is in love, he just doesn’t know how to handle it. Word Count: 779

The drive was awfully quiet.

It wasn’t comfortable either, Jasper hated the silence, he could feel everyone’s emotion in the car. Rosalie was driving as fast as she could whilst Alice sat in the passenger seat on her phone, constantly updating Carlisle. They were driving in Emmett’s car, so he was mounted in the back, keeping an eye on any potential threats. 

Edwards was trailing behind them in his own car, his emotion was loud enough that Jasper could feel it. 

He was sat behind Rosalie and Alice, with you next to him, limp in his arms. Your blood doesn’t bother him much, he loves you too much to even think about harming you. 

You are slump against his side, his arm wrapped over your shoulders whilst your head is rested on his marble cold shoulder. They can hear your blood pumping through the heart, though it was slow and concerning. Rosalie looked through the view mirror watching how Jasper carefully moved your hair and kissed the top of your forehead, she started to step on the gas. 

“How long left?” Jasper asked carefully.

“Less than an hour, Jas,” Rosalie spoke gently, smiling at him through the mirror before landing her eyes back on the road.

“Carlisle has everything set up for him, Jas, he’ll be okay.”

Jasper merely nodded, only knowing that Alice’s words don’t hold much weight of truth. She doesn’t really know if you’ll be okay, despite being able to see in the future, your future was covered by runes of old magic. 

You weren’t a vampire, you weren’t a werewolf or like that pack - shapeshifters. You were just human, with your family heavily believing in runic magic. His family has found fondness of you, you weren’t overbearing and you were just curious to know more. It could be your charms, really, you had a way with words that most humans don’t.

Jasper has never really admitted his feelings to you. After all, he is a vampire, who will continue to live, and you were just human. Destined to grow old and eventually die, and Jasper will have to witness that. He knows he cannot stray too far from you, his emotions are louder than his head - he would follow you to the end of the world if it was possible. 

He doesn’t want to give you the choice either. He doesn’t want you to choose between becoming a vampire, joining his family and leaving yours - or staying human, live your futile life, meeting someone else and growing old with them. He never really got the choice of death or immortality, and as selfish it may sound, he wished that you didn’t either - if it means you could stay by his side forever. 

“You know, I’m no mind reader, but I think you’re in love with him.”

Jasper rips his eyes away from you as he looked at Alice, who turns in her seat, smiling softly. She holds out to Jasper’s hand, gently rubbing her thumb in reassurance.

“He’s breathing, Jasper, he’s doing better than most humans.”

“I’m scared if I look away for a second, he wouldn’t be okay,” Jasper admitted, “Truthfully, I don’t think I’ve ever felt like this with anyone.”

“That’s love, Jasper,” Rosalie gives out an airy laugh at her brother, “You’re hopelessly head over heels over him.”

“I can’t help it,” Jasper rolls his eyes at the light teasing, “(Y/n) is different, he’s not like the rest. Kind of a pretty boy, isn’t he?”

“You’re smitten, Jas!” Emmett shouted, though he really didn’t need to, he would have been heard just fine.

“Fuck off,” Jasper once more rolls his eyes, though there’s a grin upon his lips. His shoulders relax just a little bit, the awkwardness has lifted just slightly. 

He feels movement from you, he turns his attention to you as you softly moan. Upon hearing that, Rosalie just quickens the pace a bit, Alice is back on the phone texting Carlisle that you’re in and out of consciousness, Emmett shuts up from behind and gives a signal to Edward to put a bit more pace on it as well. 

You opened your eyes to look at the vampire before softly smiling to yourself, he catches on to your smile as you nuzzle yourself a little bit deeper into him. He might be made out of marble, but you’ve found somewhat comfort to his exterior, it was no difference in the comfort in his cold interior. 

You close your eyes again, he knows you won’t remember this moment as he kisses your forehead again. 

He smiles to himself as he can only feel love and happiness radiating from you.

- it would involve Edward being touchy and mostly clingy. Alice would be trying to persue you and be your bestie but Edward tells her it's your private time.

Y/n was chopping up vegetables for Esme to put in the dish while everyone was doing their part in helping to make food for Edwards very human mate Bella Swan, from what you’ve seen of Bella she was a nice person, very shy and clumsy but somehow it fits for Bella, makes her human something you wish you still were, you loved being immortal it lead to many great things in your 170 years of life, a loving family, a beautiful wife, you wouldn’t change it for the world, but sometimes you find yourself wishing you were human even for a few minutes.

As Emmett threw the chicken Charlise cut up into the bowl Rosalie was holding with a scowl on her face, obviously she was against the idea of meeting Bella thinking it’s a danger to our kind to bring a human into our world of chaos and beauty, you knew everyone’s thoughts on meeting Bella; Charsile is happy Edward found his mate, Emmett just wants someone else to mess around with, Alice is excited to become friends with Bella claiming she’s seen it all happen, Jasper is scared he won’t be able to control himself and hurt Bella, Esme is happy to have a possible daughter in law.

You looked over to Rosalie and gave her a look of sympathy knowing her feelings, her eyes softened for just a moment before looking forward again “is she even Italian?” She asks with a scoff “Her names Bella” Emmett chimes in earning an eye roll from you “Just because her names Bella doesn’t mean she’s Italian dingus.” You say as you softly hit his head on the way to pour the vegetables into the bowl.

“I’m sure she’ll love it either way!” Charlise states always defusing the tention he’s about to say something else when you all caught a smell of the signature human sent, “get a wiff of that, here comes the human” Rosalies fake excitement can be heard but nobody says anything about it as Bella and Edward enter the kitchen.

Esme approaches the two “Bella, we’re making Italiano for you!” She smiles warmly, that’s what you love about her the warmth and caring nature that clouds her aura, “oh!” “Bella this is Esme, my mother for all intents and purposes.” Edward introduces her while Emmett waves with the knife he was using, “dude, don’t wave with a knife” “Bongiorno” “Moto bene!”

Charlise steppes forward with a soft look on his face “you’ve given us an excuse to use the kitchen for the first time.” “I hope you’re hungry”

“Oh absolutely!” “She already ate” Edward butts in much to Bella’s dismay as she shoots him a look about to say something when Rosalie smashes the bowl, it’s continents spilling on the floor.

“Perfect!” Rosalie glares at both of them you step towards her and sigh wrapping your arm around her and pulling her into you whispering in her hair a soft calm down Moya lyubov’” as she hugs your waist quickly before Bella starts to explain to no avail with Rosalie but a soft smile from Esme “of course, that’s very considerate of you.”

Edward throws out something about ignoring Rosalie which causes you to throw a glare his way “Yeah, let’s keep pretending that this isn’t dangerous for all of us!” Rosalie motions to the family Bella shakes her head “I would never, tell anyone” “she knows that” “the problem is, you two have gone public now so-“

Esme shoots him a scolding look “Emmett!” You come to Rosalies defense “no she should know that it could end badly, our family will be implicated if it’s found out Edwards mate is a human, the Volturi will have a field day with this one!” You state as Rosalie looks at you with appreciation Bella shifts awkwardly “oh, badly as in I’m the meal now” everyone but Rosalie holds back a laugh, Rosalie scoffs and drags you into another room.

The latter.

He never shows any particular longing for children. When Rosalie speaks of her childlessness, she brings up Esme as one who wanted kids and is making do with the Cullens, not Esme and Carlisle. Carlisle doesn’t go full Father the way Esme does Mother, either, the parent-child dynamic that we see between Billy and Jacob or Charlie and Bella isn’t there. He treats his children like cherished and respected adults who sometimes need guidance, not quite kids. (More on this below.)

He doesn’t seem particularly drawn to kids, either, he lived in Volterra for decades yet his relationship with Alec and Jane is nonexistent, and whenever he meets up with Siobhan and Maggie (Maggie being 15) it’s Siobhan he focuses on.

Plus, and I know no one will be with me on this, but he just doesn’t have the vibe.

To backtrack a bit, how did Carlisle become the father figure in the Cullen family in the first place?

He never set out to become Edward’s father. He turned Edward because he’d grown attached to Elizabeth Masen, and she asked him to turn her son. After that, Carlisle looked at Edward as a potential vampire, and saw all the things Edward could be - a friend, a brother, or a son. He was willing to be a father, but brother or partner would have worked just fine by him as well. Edward got to choose which it would be, or rather Edward decided upon waking up: he took one look at Carlisle and said “yup, that’s my Heavenly Father”.

Then we have Rosalie, she could have been his sister, niece-but-not-daughter-figure, or friend-of-the-family-who’s-part-of-the-coven. Point being, she didn’t have to become his daughter, and yet she did. I can only assume that, like Edward, she chose it. As she found her place in the family, sister and daughter was what felt right for Rosalie in relation to Edward, Carlisle, and Esme.

Then Emmett entered the family, he was Rosalie’s husband, so son to Carlisle and Esme and brother to Edward it is. Alice and Jasper arrive, alright, guess we’re playing house! The coven leader and his mate are mother and father now.

Now, I don’t think the Cullens are secretly not a family, that the whole thing is a front brought on by contrivances. They make it clear again and again that they see each other as family, and they prove several times they’ll go to bat for Edward. And since this is a post about Carlisle I’ll stress that he even refers to newcomer Bella as being like a daughter to him.

The coven has its dysfunctions, yes, anyone who follows my blog knows that I think it’ll break up sooner or later, but that doesn’t delegitimize what they do have.

I think Carlisle is the father figure because that’s what the Cullens need him to be.

Edward was orphaned and alone in a brave new world, and immediately latched on to Carlisle. This isn’t the post to get into their relationship, suffice to say that he needs Carlisle to be his father and would not cope well with Carlisle saying “Fatherhood, huh, woof. Yeahh about that, kid...”

Of course, Carlisle thought of him as a potential son before turning him, but all the same this turned out to be what Edward needed.

Rosalie and Carlisle's relationship is also best reserved for a post of its own, but in a nutshell her parents were social climbers who viewed her beauty as their ticket up the social ladder:

“It was my mother’s job to keep our house — and myself and my two younger brothers — in spotless order. It was clear that I was both her first priority and her favorite. I didn’t fully understand at the time, but I was always vaguely aware that my parents weren’t satisfied with what they had, even if it was so much more than most. They wanted more. They had social aspirations — social climbers, I suppose you could call them. My beauty was like a gift to them. They saw so much more potential in it than I did.

[I was] happy that my mother was proud of me and that my father liked to buy me pretty dresses. (Eclipse, page 90)

Enter then Carlisle Cullen, who has no interest in her beauty, no ambition on her behalf. He gave her this life she never wanted, yes, but in doing so he also saw something in Rosalie Hale that was worth it all, that he wanted to keep around for eternity.

Rosalie was very happy with her life, but even when reminiscing about how amazing it all was she is able to recognize that her parents loved her beauty, not so much Rosalie herself. Did she want that affection, of course, what child wouldn’t. But, I find the fact that she let Carlisle become her father telling.

I think he’s the father she wished Mr. Hale had been.

Alice is... complicated, but a big part of what she gets from being with the Cullens, from the high school routine and all the clothes, is personhood. She’s an inhuman entity with no memory of being human, and her visions make her even less connected to the physical world than other vampires are. How do you carve out a sense of self around that?

To her, performative humanity as a Cullen is just that, it’s her getting to be a person.

In that regard, having Carlisle around as a person to relate to, a father figure to give Alice Cullen the person substance, is precious.

Jasper doesn’t need a father, but he is in need of guidance and a confidante. Carlisle is implied to be this to him in Midnight Sun, when Jasper needs to be talked down from doing something rash and Alice’s response is to put him in Carlisle’s office and wait for Carlisle to come home and talk sense into him. Carlisle just smiles wryly and trots up the stairs to do what is apparently the not unheard of Jasper wrangling. I can see why the father/son thing comes naturally to them.

I think Renesmée to an extent will also fall under the umbrella of Cullens who act like baby birds around Carlisle, as explained in this post.

Emmett and Bella have no such void being filled by Carlisle. Do they see each other as family, sure, Emmett especially considering how many years they’ve been together. 

(Also, yes I’m aware I didn’t include Esme’s relationship with the kids in this post, that’s not to dismiss her but because anon didn’t ask.)

I love your headcanons about the Cullen family, especially about the Hale twins. I know that Twilight is more of a bitter story than a sweet one, but I like to imagine what the family dynamic would be like since we have so little material about it. I can definitely imagine Jasper getting between Rosalie and Emmett when they fight, since Rosie would probably complain to him and Emmett would be more like "bro, help me". Maybe he would try to calm Rosalie down with his powers, but when she realized it, she would yell "DON'T!"

lol anon I love that scenario. feels so accurate that a) jasper is definitely The Mediator in a lot of disputes and b) he definitely has Rules about who he is allowed to influence and when and rosalie is the one calling him out if he dares to Cheat

like, jasper and alice probably had that conversation early on in their relationship, and then when they showed up at the cullens' place, there was probably some kind of group discussion about who's comfortable having their emotions tweaked and in what circumstances vs who categorically refuses help (rosalie.)

but even rosalie gets curious, and she has bad days, and I bet eventually she caved and asked/allowed jasper to influence her. I think she would hate the idea of him softening her anger in any way (forbidden!), but might like to be artificially lifted out of her sadness on occasion (especially if she feels like she's hurting emmett.)

but she also dislikes the idea of "cheating" at anything, or changing herself to be more palatable to others, so I think it's very rare that she requests jasper's help that way. as for the rest of the family:

edward - absolutely not, he wants to stew in abject misery forever. he is a foul loathsome damnèd being who doesn't DESERVE to feel joy

esme - sometimes requests an emotion boost! she's all right with dwelling on sad memories, but she doesn't want to get bogged down feeling depressed about things she can't change—she'd rather find the energy to keep moving forward and appreciate what she has

carlisle - doesn't really need much help, and is a bit of an emotional purist who, like rosalie, doesn't want to "cheat." lowkey wishes he had jasper's power for himself, though—he'd like to understand other people's feelings better

alice - jasper is Allowed to use his gift on her under certain circumstances (cheering up, removing anxiety, and sometimes during sex.) they also have a more general understanding that he can try his luck at other random times, because she has a better sense than the others of when he is/isn't using his gift and will simply say no if she doesn't want him to

emmett - "yeah dude go nuts just don't make me horny in the middle of algebra II or whatever"

“New Life” - Jasper Hale x Reader

(Gender Neutral) 

Request: Maybe a volturi!reader x Jasper? The reader knew Carlisle when he was with the Volturi and years later leaves to join the Cullens and their life style. Thank you! 

I walk into the throne room on this fine Sunday evening. 

“Good evening, (Y/N). What brings you into the throne room this evening?” Aro asks with a smile. 

“It’s a pleasure to see you all. I just would like to speak with you on my… living arrangements.” I look between the faces of Marcus, Caius, and Aro. 

“Ah, I remember. I remember we spoke of you moving in with our dear old friend, Carlisle. Is that what you still wish to do?” Aro speaks with a small smile. 

“It is. I have spoken to Carlisle about the matter, it is what I wish to do.” I return the small smile.

“Very well, you may go.” Aro smiles. 

“Thank you.” I nod before walking up to my room to pack all my things.

“Such a shame.” I hear Aro say as I walk out of the room, Caius and Marcus agreeing silently. 

I ignore their words. I just think about how thankful I am that Aro doesn’t hold too much value for me and my power. He truly was more interested in me as a number, I believe. 

I tidied my room, made my bed, and folded my robe. I place the folded, soft black material at the edge of my bed before swiftly exiting my room. 

I walk out of the castle, refusing to turn around even once.

I swam to Forks, never once looking back. I knew I didn’t need to tell Carlisle about my arrival, as Alice would expect me.

I follow the scent to find the beautiful home they called their own.

“Hello, (Y/N). Welcome to my home.” Carlisle beamed from the front steps, his arm around a beautiful woman I assume to be his wife Esme. 

“Thank you. I’m very grateful to be here.” I smile.

“We’re happy to have you. This is my wife, Esme.” He introduces us.

She welcomes me with a warm hug, something I wasn’t used to. Living in the Volturi castle was cold. Already, I feel a sense of relief. I feel like a burden was lifted off my shoulders. 

They bring me inside, introducing me to the rest of their family. 

Alice was a tiny woman, absolute joy and happiness radiating off of her. She smiled at me and pulled me into a tight hug. She told me that she couldn’t wait to meet me, how we would be the best of friends. 

Emmett and Rosalie were mates, an absolutely stunning couple. Her beauty held no bounds, but she seemed distrustful of my presence. She remained polite and friendly, but her feelings seeped through. Her large husband was smiling at me, his presence was more lighthearted. Both of them smiling and introducing themselves.

Edward was a bit more reserved, as well. He was friendly in nature though quiet. I knew he was able to read my mind, so that was going to be something to get used to. 

That’s when I met eyes with Jasper. It felt like my whole world turned upside down. Our eyes unwavering from one another. Had I finally found my mate?

“It’s nice to finally meet you.” He whispers with a soft smile, reaching his hand out.

“You as well.” I return the smile, reaching my hand out to his.

He presses a soft kiss to the back of my hand, making my dead heart flutter. 

“I look forward to spending some time with you, (Y/N).” His beautiful voice echoes throughout my ears. 

His golden eyes met my red ones, sending shivers up my spine. Soon, my eyes would be golden 

I knew that I made the right choice, this was the life I was meant to live.

“I look forward to spending time with you as well.” I smile at him.

If Bella hadn't come up with Renesmee Carlie, or Edward Jacob for her unborn child in canon, what do you think she would have done? Choose a random name? Try to combine other names? Honor her or maybe Edward's deceased relatives?

The hill I will die on is that "Renesmee" is wildly out of character for Bella Swan to have come up with. This just screams "author choice" and not "character choice." Bella Swan was not that creative or whimsical. She was 'born 35 and getting more middle aged every year.' Her favorite color was brown. She read the same books over and over. And given her attitude toward her fellow high school students, she absolutely would have been one of those people who looked down on teen/young moms giving their kids weird/trendy names. Search your feelings; you know this to be true.

And the whole "she's the most unique being in the world she needs a unique name" doesn't even work because a boy was going to be "E.J." There is nothing supernatural or whimsical or otherworldly about E. J. Cullen.

"Edward Jacob" and/or "Edward Jr," on the other hand are COMPETELY in character for Bella to pick. Almost to the point of parody. I mean if BD didn't exist and someone asked me over at KUWTC what Bella would name a son, I would have had her answer "Edward Jacob," it's so obviously what she would choose. I'm not saying it's a GOOD choice or that it's not super insensitive to both people she's 'honoring' with the name, but it's 100% in character. I believe the Bella I had been reading about for 3 and a half books would name her son that; I don't believe that Bella would name her daughter 'Renesmee' though. Apparently combining family names into a new name is not uncommon in Mormon culture (and Stephenie herself is StephEnie and not StephAnie because her dad's name is Stephen), but Bella the character is not Mormon, so it doesn't make sense as a *character* choice.

Given that she was going to name a son Edward Jacob/Junior, I still think "Elizabeth" after Edward's mother and literary heroines like Elizabeth Bennet would be perfectly in character. Beyond that, Elizabeth is a timeless name that is not going to stand out. It fits in nicely with Edward and Alice. Half the Cullens already have E names anyway so it stays on trend (Edward, Esme, Emmett, Elizabeth). And "Isabella" and "Elizabeth" come from the same root, so if the boy is named after Edward and Edward's father, then a girl is named after Bella and Edward's mother. It's consistent. It's "mature." It's boring. It's in character.

I also think "Rose" would be a nice nod to Rosalie's help during the pregnancy (even though Bella and Rose were both kind of using each other there). "Elizabeth Rose" is pretty. It's old fashioned. It sounds like it could come out of an Austen novel. And there are so many nicknames with Elizabeth (Liz, Lizzy, Eliza, Betsy, Ella, Beth) that you could still get some "You gave her WHAT nickname?" freakout.

"BESSIE?! YOU NICKNAMED MY DAUGHTER AFTER A COW?!"

"LIZARD?! YOU NICKNAMED MY DAUGHER AFTER A REPTILE?!"

This isn't hard.
