Fannish Year Review - 2023

1. your main fandom of the year: Star Wars -- after like three years of feeling way-too-sensitive about the series, I decided to take that whole Marie Kondo approach to fandom: keep what brings you joy and throw the rest into an active volcano (or...something like that. It's been a minute since I read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, but I'm sure that's an accurate synopsis that Marie would be totally fine with on her book's dust jacket). And then I started writing fanfiction, which has been fun.

Though...though...I did revisit The Hunger Games this year and made my bestie into an HG fan, so that series has certainly played a part.

2. have u watched a film this year: I've only been to theaters twice this year -- once for the Return of the Jedi 40th anniversary rerelease, once to see Barbie. I don't think I've watched many new things this year, to be honest. Mainly rewatches.

3. your favorite book this year: Oof, my reading list is embarrassingly short this year. Probably Nine Liars by @maureenjohnsonbooks. It's the 5th book in a YA mystery series and love that entire dang series so much.

4. your favorite album or song this year:

Album: Stick Season by Noah Kahan

Song: Probably "Happier Than Ever" by Billie Eilish, but I'm honestly not certain

5. your favorite tv shows this year: I think I rewatched Severance twice this year, so...Haaaa...

6. your favorite tumblr community this year: Han/Leia, but I also follow some Little Women accounts that I've quite enjoyed.

7. your best new fandom discovery of the year: I did start watching Ted Lasso, but kind of forgot about it, though the show is delightful. I feel like I've been very hyperfocused on Star Wars stuff this year tbh.

8. your biggest fandom disappointment of the year: You know what, I rarely hate on specific ships publicly, but having one of my posts in which I was spitballing a headcanon involving Tarkin and Leia having an absurd rivalry while she was like 16-19 years old that was similar in tone to Jack Donaghy and Kaylie Hooper from 30 Rock (a relationship that is entirely not sexual on account of Kaylie being fifteen when she first pops up on the show) reblogged multiple times with Leia/Tarkin shipping tags might just have been the most disappointing fandom-related thing to happen to me personally this year. I don't even know if this is the type of answer the question was looking for, but uh...it was definitely the most disappointing.

9. your tv/movie boyfriend and/or girlfriend of the year: I'm...not entirely sure how to answer this tbh.

10. your biggest squee moment of the year: I've received a lot of really nice comments on my stories this year, but there have been a handful left where I really felt...seen? if that makes sense. Like, the commenters wrote something where I felt like someone fully understood what I was trying to do, which doesn't always happen, and those have definitely been exciting moments for me.

Season 4 Brittany was unbearable.

It's like Heather came into work and kind of forgot how to play Brittany. So she just made it up and improvised and it was not the same. Her and Sam had no chemistry, every scene they had together was dead. I would hate it more but they didn't spend too much time together that season. I mean the other day I watched the scene where Brittany goes up to Kitty at the lockers and gets her to go on fondue for two and Brittany's acting was so bad. It's so hard for me to say this because I love Heather but man was she bad at her job in season 4. It actually was really confusing and made no sense because I know she can act!!

Idk if you expected me to agree with such a statement, but tbh reading the rest of your message it feels like you should have started with "season 4 Hemo was unbearable." Which I still wouldn't agree with tbh.

Obviously I'm no fan of Bram either and Heather was never the strongest actress even if she does improve over the years - and progress isn't linear so yeah maybe some of her weakest scenes are in season 4. Scene partners also matter and, well, she usually had Naya to work with. In season 4? Less so.

I'm not sure what to do with your line about improvisation because... that's who Brittany has always been? As she bot an actual storyline in Brittana her character needed to be more structured, sure, but so much of her in season 1 is either full Hemo lines or Ian Brennan being inspired by Hemo lines. And again, yeah, no fan of Bram over here but does that make Sam unbearable for you, too? Just wondering.

I personally love the Kitty scene, and is it Hemo’s best acting, probs not, but it’s not outstandingly terrible or anything. Because of the whole progress not being linear thing I would believe that she had weaker or even her weakest moments this season but I just don’t have season 4 as outstandingly bad in my memory, and I’m (ostensibly) rewatching it right now. Right not being the last half a year shhh. Even if she was noticeably that much worse in my eyes, too, I’d be tempted to cut her some slack because she was pregnant for the majority of filming. And not because of some sexist implication that pregnancy makes women crazy or worse at their jobs but just because of the myriad different things that go into literally developing a brand new life, I think she’d be forgiven for not bringing her A game the whole season.

6. this is hard !! but i’m torn between after midnight and hello. i say after midnight because it’s out of my comfort zone to write anything fwd (it’s honestly kind of hard) but i managed to push through that and made it work! and i say hello because it’s one of my first long length fics and it just. i love the meaning behind it and it always has a place in my heart. :(

7. i think i wouldn’t make a good superhero tbh LOL i’m like an anti-hero or something LMFAO but if i were to have a superpower, probably super strength. no reason. just wanna throw stuff around.

8. i’m really big on honesty and respect. if my feet stinks, please tell me. but also there’s just something about respect from both friends and a significant other that i prioritize!! some things about a person’s personality can’t be forced to change, and that’s fine, but if they can’t be at least honest or respectful towards me, which btw is the bare minimum, consider yourself cut off.

9. !!! i’m only watching kitchen nightmares rn !! LMFAO but honestly i get so mad when people waste gordon’s time or act like he’s here for himself when they’re the ones who asked to be on the show??/ like hello did you forget you wrote into the show so you could be helped??? hello???? also i can’t help but wonder like how much time did he spend away from family bc of shows like these only to have ungrateful bitches out here smfh

10. LOL STEM !! i love stem even though i hate it. i think something to keep in mind is that there’s an end goal to this. throughout the ride, you’re gonna feel discouraged and feel like this isn’t for anything. but remember why you did it in the first place. and is it worth it? because that’s how i felt often but i remember taking those trips to job-site tours to see construction in progress, and i’m like yeah. this is why. i like this. i wanna work in this in the future. and i think it’s easy to forget what you’re working for during the obstacles because your head is only wrapped around that and whatever is in the moment, but just remember to step back, breathe and try to remember what you’re in this for !! 

and even if you’re not 100% solid in what you like, don’t forget to try out different things even if they’re not pertaining to your major. you’re young, you have time to figure things out, and when you discover you don’t like something, great! that scratches off one thing on your list. now you’re one step closer to finding something you like.

After finishing Midnight Sun, I’ve just been on a whirlwind nostalgia binge while simultaneously using my heightened 22 year old critical thinking to roast tf out of every bit of Twilight saga and SMeyer content I’ve come across...

after having rewatched that film in full, not just in random snippets of my favourite scenes {see: training montage where it’s just Jasper talking the entire time in Eclipse}, for the first time since I think that initial fever faze between 2009-2011... I can say with certainty now... both 10-11 year old me, and 22 year old me enjoy Twilight. Both movie and book. Unlike the films, I think I reread the books multiple times between 2008-2013... so I can say that I enjoyed it.

However, as I have come to be far too practiced in, I have separated the art from the artist. Smeyer is racist, misogynistic trash who doesn’t know how to keep consistent characterisation or understands the GOLDMINE of incredible stories in Rosalie, Alice and Jasper, Carlisle pre-Edward... like fuck I would die if we got Carlisle struggling to reconcile his monster self with his desire to do good in the world like holy shit... Alice waking up in that cell or pit or wherever tf it was and using her visions to guide her to Jasper and then the Cullens??? Hell fucking yes!! ROSALIE BEING A BADASS MECHANIC BUT ALSO THE QUEEN OF CONSENT WHO KILLED HER RAPISTS... she hates Rosalie and Jessica and I will not stand for this bullshit... Rosalie and Edward are BROTHER AND SISTER and this weird awkward hateful relationship they end up having is utter nonsense... and my god, CHARLIE... Charlie would never. Ever. Have congratulated Jacob for kissing Bella without her consent. Point blank. But ESPECIALLY when she was so upset about it. AND BROKE HER HAND BECAUSE OF IT. in this way, Movie!Charlie aka Billy Burke remains top tier...

But anyway I was talking about how I enjoy Twilight. 10-11 year old was caught in the sappy romance back in the day. Even then in 2009-10 the whole stigma against Twilight was sinking in so I never fully leaned into the fangirl but I was fairly invested in the series.

I watched all the movies except I think BD pt. 2 in cinemas (again the Twilight fatigue had truly settled in by that point). I somehow ended up watching New Moon twice (first time bc the whole fam went. Second time bc my mum couldn’t focus bc my at the time toddler sister was distracting her). Which really, equally as angsty as Twilight, tho tbh haven’t watched that in a while either (maybe since I first watched it) so tbd on that rewatch y’all. I think it might’ve been my least favourite one... bc I always skip to Eclipse whenever I rewatch stuff (I can say that Eclipse was probably 2014-2015 in full) bc I would argue that’s my favourite of the movies... mostly bc of Jasper XD.

(Yes he was a Confederate soldier. Another hideous detail Smeyer chose to include. I choose to believe, like many men of that time and other wartimes, was swayed by the South’s missive and the lusty lure of proving yourself in battle that ended up taking many young lives who didn’t know wtf they were doing... and current Jasper knows better, which would parallel his toxic relationship with Maria and her ambition to conquer the South with her newborns... ALSO YO SMEYER WHY TF SHE HAVE TO BE MEXICAN/LATINA???? WHY TF WAS THAT NECESSARY??!?! Had to make the one Mexican vampire a horrible, manipulative seductress huh)

So yeah. 22 year old me still enjoys it. It’s not a good book or series by any means. It’s not well written or consistent at all. How did Jacob become such an asshole BUT YOURE GONNA TELL ME 15 YEARS AFTER THE FACT THAT EDWARD THINKS JACOB’S THOUGHTS ARE PURE AND HE LIKES LISTENING TO HIM????

But getting to criticise this series while simultaneously recognising every single scene that made my heart flutter back in the day just enhances my experience as a whole. As well as using my apparently much better imagination than Smeyer to dream up much better stories for the rest of the Cullens WHO WERE PROBABLY THE ONLY APPEALS OF MIDNIGHT SUN.

Also what a fucking depressing way to end that book. With Edward resolved to leave Bella at any given moment. *sigh*

Anyway. 7 nostalgia points out of 10. 4 critical points out of 10. 6/10 overall bc of what could’ve been if smeyer was a better person.

And fuck your for having a cameo in the first movie and the wedding scene in BD pt. 1. If I see you in the others imma scream.

BnHA Chapter 171: Knock Them Dead With Your Sound

Previously on BnHA: Deku and Mirio visited Eri in the hospital. Eri apologized for everything they went through in order to save her, particularly Mirio who lost his powers. Mirio told her it wasn’t her fault and that everyone was just glad she was safe, and they all wanted to see her smiling face. Eri tried to smile but couldn’t quite manage it. Deku racked his brain for ways to cheer her up, and struck on the idea of inviting her to the cultural festival. Aizawa said he’d need to ask the principal but that it could probably be arranged. After Mirio explained the concept, Eri agreed, saying that she wanted to get to know everyone better. We then cut to the police, who were watching a live broadcast of a convenience store robbery and trying to trace its source. The robber, a gentleman thief named -- wait for it -- Gentle, took out six heroes in the blink of an eye and then left without taking any money. He said he wanted his name to be etched into history, and as he met up with his accomplice afterwards, he pondered what his next great exploit should be.

Today on BnHA: We are properly introduced to Gentle and his social media-savvy adoring fan La Brava. Gentle specializes in “chivalrous crimes” that target corruption. However his recent videos haven’t been as popular, in part because Stain and the League of Villains have been stealing his thunder. Back at U.A., word begins to spread about class A’s band performance and dance program. Bakugou overhears some grumps complaining about how cocky 1-A is and how they’re the ones who “start all the conflict.” That evening the kids meet to hash out who will be in charge of what. Jirou needs a drummer, and it turns out Bakugou plays drums, but he’s pissed at the idea of being obligated to provide stress relief for the other departments. As he puts it, “we aren’t getting smacked down by the villains because we enjoy it.” Instead he reframes the whole thing as a battle, and vows to knock U.A. dead with his sound. I mean, whatever works I guess. Meanwhile Gentle reveals to La Brava that he’s planning a new stunt which will surpass anything Stain or the League has done: he plans to invade U.A.

(As always, all comments not marked with an ETA are my unspoiled reactions from my first readthrough of this chapter. I’ve read up through chapter 198 now, so any ETAs will reflect that.)

series 9 rewatch

i haven’t seen most of series 9 since it aired like two years ago, so over the past week or so i’ve been rewatching it (out of order oops)! ngl i rlly hated it when it first aired so here’s like,, my updated opinions! 

 the magician’s apprentice/the witch’s familiar: i’m not kidding when i say i actually cried watching this on its air date bc i was so disappointed. idk why bc it’s actually a pretty solid premier?? could be just bc i’m like in love w missy now but either way i think it’s a gr8 set up for the rest of the series. also rlly cool titles that are prob about clara, 8/10 

under the lake/before the flood: for some reason i remembered these as being rlly boring but?? they’re SO good??? i love how at first it just seems like normal alien stuff but then it’s all about time and paradoxes and whatnot. idk i love eps like that, 10/10 

 the girl who died/the woman who lived: i didn’t really like ashildr in 2015 and… i still kinda don’t lmao. i feel like they tried to make her too important too quickly. i like the first part better, imo it’s good by itself– the second part is good too i’m jus biased against ashildr rip, 7/10 

the zygon invasion/the zygon inversion: i remembered these as being lit but tbh now i found them kinda boring. i feel like osgood had some weird characterization that didn’t fit, like just accepting any zygon that took her form as a sister?? wtf. also imo the doctor’s speech in part two is overrated and a bit egotistical, 6/10 

sleep no more: boring bad weird 4/10 (no but rlly, filmed all in the dark, u could find like a dozen episodes exactly like it, eye booger monsters?????) 

face the raven: in 2015 i didn’t like clara (is there anyone i liked in 2015??) so i didn’t find this ep that sad, but now? hoo boy, i was emotional as shit. i love the premise and rigsy and the timelords’ involvement, everything is just. so good. ashildr being part of it is kinda ?¿ but w/e, 9/10 

heaven sent: gets its own bc it’s the best episode ever made, work of art, a masterpiece, nothing on television will ever be the same, peak of cinematic beauty, never before seen pure, raw creative talent, 10000000/10 

hell bent: i still don’t know what tf the hybrid is or why i should be scared of it. the doctor going back to gallifrey is cool, clara getting an immortal space girlfriend is rad as fuck, the doctor forgetting clara is sad but maybe a bit predictable. i like how in every other new who finale there’s some sort of “end of the world” thing happening and in this one there’s like,, no danger at all lmao. didn’t rlly live up to heaven sent but that’d be impossible, 8/10 

 imma do the christmas ones too bc why not (idek if they count as s9 but w/e)

 the husbands of river song: perfect mix of humor and action and sadness for a christams ep, river not knowing the doctor is hilarious af, the ending is sO fucking sad but it’s also the absolute perfect wrap up of river’s arc, tHE library music that plays when she opens the screwdriver is actually lethal, 10/10 

the return of doctor mysterio: what the fuck. 0/10

Ranking the Harry Potter Movies

I have without a questionable doubt watched the movies many more times than I have read the books, 1-4 I watched the movies before I read the book, 6&7 I read the books first, and 5 well, I was in the middle of the book when the movie came out. Looking back I couldn’t wish it another way. I feel like the information you find out in 6 & 7 is essential to learn in the books first (let's pretend I didn’t find out a HUGE spoiler prior to getting to book 6). 5 honestly I would’ve disliked regardless. I also had no idea what depression was at the time, and hasn’t gone through a mild level of teenage angst.

Unlike my book ranking, I am going to go in order by movie, and then place them in their respected spot at the end. 

(I am going to watch each movies’ respected trailer while I write these, I am very excited)

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

And so the magic begins,

this movie did an excellent job of bringing us into the world and falling in love with this trio that we will go on an adventure with.

Unlike the book, which I found the beginning to drag on a little too much, it has you interested to keep watching, everything is new, and were looking along with the characters. Quidditch is done really well, the CGI, on the other hand, is very bad, there was one year where I was watching the film and all of the sudden I realized how outdated it was, and now it’s a bit distracting to watch at times.

I think Christopher Columbus was an excellent choice for the director.

And ofc the music, ugh my heart my heart, I cry. This is one reason to love these movies alone, the first two movies have my favorite score.

One thing I like that the movies do that the books don’t is they end at Hogwarts, which keeps the magic alive as you leave the theater. This ending always makes me cry.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

This is, and will always my most loved Harry Potter film. 

I knew this movie by heart, me and my friend would act this film out, they had some of the best bts footage (And game). I love dobby, the music, the ending makes me cry even more than the first one. This movie screams nostalgia (even more than hp1 tbh). I think I enjoy this movie a little more than 1 because we get to jump right into the action. This film is very pure, and not nearly as dark as it soon is to get, but it is also one of the most important films that later ties to the later books/films but you don’t know it yet.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

At the time this film was a little to dark for 8 year old me. I can’t remember but this may have been the first film I saw in theaters (I know for sure that I didn’t see 1-2, and 4 in theaters).

This film is beautiful and PERFECT. I don’t think there is anything I can criticize (jk i do below) about this film. I think they did a good job at cutting out the unnecessary parts of the pet debacle while still keeping it in the movie. This movie makes me love Lupin even more, great casting choice.

random things

1) the scene that harry finds out sirus is his grandfather is confusing, but I also understand the direction of harry following them to a vacant room instead of staying in the 3 broomsticks. - So it could be clearer...

2) I don’t mind the change of harry seeing Pettigrew on the ground in the map, it adds suspense

3)  I don’t like Michael Gambon’s Dumbledore, obv we can do anything but I wish he was softer (this could also be in part a directional choice but :/)

Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire

I’ve always loved even numbers, this stays true for Harry Potter. I like that in the films they focus on Harry being a good wizard, in the book I'm like ?????? he’s not really doing any of this himself, even though that has always been a theme in the books/movies, he acts like he can do it alone, but he needs help, and others are there to help him. But in the book I just think he’s cheating the entire time, even though in reality they all are cheating to a degree, it confuses my head.

Things I dislike” Dumbledore is obv too aggressive in this movie (but he annoys me less than in 3), the yule ball wasn’t executed as well as it could have been. I find ron getting mad at harry a lot more annoying in the movie, it also feels like it last longer than it did in the book. 

I actually liked how they included “Moody” having a tounge thing, it helps the viewer put together the pieces. I also didn’t mind the quidditch scene being cut ngl

Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix

“There's a storm a coming Harry” - quotes by Hagrid, aka the most memorable part of the movie. 

This movie I really need to rewatch because I’ve probably seen it the least. It is highly annoying. They obviously did a good job at casting Umbridge because I want to throw a shoe at the screen every time I watch it. I love how they executed Fred and Georges's departure scene, the effect in this movie otherwise I find annoying, Sirus in the fireplace, better in 4, the editing is a tad too dark, like sometimes you can’t see things on the screen, it’s overall too saturated. Grimmauld place was done well. I don’t this movie is just :/ to me. Ofc I’d still watch it over many other things. I think one of my biggest issues with this film is they try to make it funny, but it’s trying too hard, 3 & 4 do a good job at balancing dark storylines and humor, in this, not so much. This movie has Luna, another good job at casting, and Neville becomes more prevalent which I like. 

Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince

This was my least favorite adaption, and it made me sad. And, Sadly, I wasn’t surprised I didn’t like it when it came out because David Yates Directed it. (It could’ve also been because of the writing but). This movie was EXTREMELY important to creating the last two films, and at this point, I believe the last book was already out. But the amount of stuff they left out made it difficult for people who didn’t read the books or even fully remember the books follow the later storylines. We needed more Voldemort, and less humor and love. When I watch this film back it’s never as bad as I think it is, the Felix felicis scene is my favorite when Hermoine attacks Ron with the birds also stand out. I would have been fine if they kept that in but they also did a poor job at it, they did horrible at developing Ginny’s character, HP5 also could’ve done a better job at that, but it just :/ watching them and the chemistry is barely there.

Also, who is the Half-Blood Prince because they barely include him in the film. I think this movie needed to be longer to help them accomplish executing the film properly.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

I was really nervous about the last two films because they were so bad, but luckily I was happy with them. (For the most part). There were things that probably didn’t make sense that I can’t remember on the top of my head.

Everyone and their mother didn’t like part 1 because it was boring but I actually liked it, not quite as much as the books but

As I’m watching the trailer it gave me chills, the fact that it’s the last two of the series makes it automatically better...Like it was the end of an ERA *I'm not crying you are*

I think if David Yates didn’t do these movies I would have liked them even more but.... what are you going to do. I wasn’t mad at them.
