Here’s the thing.
Many Bagginshield shippers, especially in fics, focus on how Bilbo never got over Thorin, to the point where some describe Bilbo’s life as sad and unfulfilled because of that loss.
Don’t get me wrong: I do agree that he suffered terrible loss and undeserved torment by the Ring. And the fact that he never marries probably does have some connection to the memory of Thorin.
But, y’all, don’t forget or ignore the fact that, in Tolkien’s text, Bilbo does move on from grief and live the rest of his life well.
He does not become bitter from his pain. He retains his kind heart.
He is generous with his wealth, helping in every way he can the very community that ostracizes him.
He sees in Frodo a kindred spirit and takes it upon himself to be the parental figure that Frodo so badly needs as an orphan.
He and Frodo develop an uncle-nephew (really more like father-son) relationship built on trust, keeping no secrets from each other, to the level where he tells Frodo the truth about his encounter with Gollum. (And probably the truth about his feelings for Thorin, too.)
He and Frodo have so much fun, going for walks every day, studying the Elvish languages, and throwing big birthday parties to show the community a good time. It’s plain to see that caring for Frodo filled that massive void inside Bilbo, finally giving him someone to love and devote himself to looking after, after his first chance at that (albeit the first being a different kind of love) was taken from him.
He does not see himself as superior to the lower class despite his riches, and always treats the Gamgees with the utmost respect.
He teaches Sam to read and write.
He tells his story to the younger hobbits, inspiring more of them to want to learn more about the outside world and not be so sheltered and ignorant…an effort which ultimately saves Middle-earth because the Travelers learn from him to be curious and interested in the lands outside the Shire, and he inspires them daily, as they constantly say to themselves “if Bilbo could go there and back again and face great danger, so can we.”
He even learns to love having a tarnished reputation, ultimately taking advantage of being “mad” to play a fun prank.
When he is no longer at rest in the Shire, he gifts Frodo all his property which will ensure Frodo is set for life, and through all his passive aggressive gifts to his relatives, he gives the Gaffer genuinely useful items that he knows will help him, including ointment for creaky joints.
He gets a peaceful retirement among his Elven friends, which he spends writing his memoir so that future generations will know all about his lost friends.
And ultimately, he embraces the special gift of an exception from the Valar and rare permission to set foot in the Blessed Realm for one last adventure, where he will continue to look after his beloved nephew.
And the fact is, he never would’ve gotten any of these things if he’d stayed in Erebor. He would never have developed that special bond with Frodo - he may never have even met him - and consequently, Frodo may never have met Sam.
Yes, a lot of his life was lonely and somber. But much more of it, even after experiencing such a tragedy, was full of love and joy and fun and excitement. He became an invaluable caretaker and mentor to the next generation of hobbits, got a taste of fatherhood, passed on his expertise and his story, and spent his last years surrounded by friends and family.
Bilbo Baggins may have lost the love of his life, but he did not give up on life itself, and he lived a full one. Don’t forget that.

Concerning Hobbit-Friends
nearly every other free people in Middle Earth have such a concept ( ie, Elf-friend, Dwarf-friend, etc.) so I decided that hobbits do it too. Any hobbit can name someone hobbit-friend, but that’s not a guarantee that their fellow hobbits will consider them their own friend. The exception is if the Thain or Mayor formally names someone hobbit-friend on behalf of all Shirefolk, which has only happened once.
here is a list of known hobbit-friends:
• Gandalf. Obviously. He’s the OG hobbit-friend, upon whom all others are based
• Tom Bombadil: he was given the title by Farmer Maggot. It is unknown if Maggot was the only hobbit to name him hobbit-friend, or if others had done so in the past and his proclamation was redundant.
• the entirety of Thorin’s company: Bilbo named them all hobbit-friend when he left Erebor, in the middle of his “tea at four” speech. This included a posthumous hobbit-friending of Thorin, Fìli, and Kìli.
• multiple Breelanders: throughout the long history of Bree and the Breelands, when hobbits and Men lived side by side, there were many individuals named hobbit-friend by their neighbor for various reasons. The line of Butterburs in particular have held the title unbroken from father to son, usually proclaimed by drunk hobbits in the Prancing Pony wanting to thank and honor their host.
• Boromir: thus named by Merry and Pippin. Pippin was honoring that bond/title when he swore allegiance to Denethor.
• Gimli: Frodo named him hobbit-friend when they were mourning Balin together in Moria and Frodo saw his heart.
• Treebeard: sort of named himself such unwittingly when fitting hobbits into his worldview out loud. Merry and Pippin just accepted it, thus binding it.
• Quickbeam: named such by Merry and Pippin as a throwaway comment that nonetheless had all the meaningfulness necessary.
• Thèoden: named such by Merry when he swore himself to him. He intended to teach him about pipeweed; that was a gift for a hobbit-friend not given to merely anyone. The horn Merry was later given was to honor it, and it was later given much honor in return in the Shire.
• Aragorn: surprisingly, it didn’t happen on the quest. He was their friend, sure, but not specifically a hobbit-friend. But as time went on the hobbits in the Fellowship began to treat him more and more like one, and he was finally formally proclaimed hobbit-friend by Thain Paladin himself on behalf of the Shire after he gifted the hobbits Westmarch and passed the law forbidding Big Folk from entering the Shire. The first king of the Fourth Age was long remembered in the Shire for being the first and only Man to be hobbit-friend to all hobbits. Not even Gandalf was accepted by all, *cough*-Disturber-of-the-Peace-*cough*
Finrod: the only person to be named hobbit-friend in Aman. Proclaimed by Bilbo and Frodo, and then again Sam before he realized it had already been done. He earned the title by connecting with them deeply and helping them around the Undying Lands. Come on, guys, you knew he was gonna have to complete the trifecta of races he’s Friends with.

Hi! Was trying everything i could, but i just can't find any Gandalf fanfictions, when i found your page. And it is beautiful, truly. I was wondering if maybe you could something where the reader is Gandalf's wife/so or something like that, but no one knew. And when she joins Thorin's company they are like surprised SURPRISED. I understand if you can't, it appears no one thinks of him as they think of elfs, so if you are uncomfortable it ok!
Thank you anyway ❤️
Thank you for your kind words ♡ At this point I’m not writing for the Hobbit characters, but I did the Fellowship’s reactions and some bonus headcanons of mine instead.
The post was very fun to write (more Gandalf love!), so I hope you’ll enjoy it just as much!
・゚✧ Aragorn.
Tumblr media
Surprisingly, Aragorn knew absolutely nothing about your relationship with Gandalf. While Gandalf is generally a rather private person, you’d think a ranger – a friend, no less – would’ve picked up on the little clues of yours. It is needless to say though that Aragorn would accept you quickly and with a big grin. Anyone who is with his old friend Gandalf is trustworthy to him as well!
・゚✧ Boromir.
Tumblr media
Realisation would dawn on Boromir very, very slowly. Once he understood that the new companion was, indeed, the spouse of Gandalf the Grey, he’d fall silent for a few days at least, maybe give a nervous smile or so. He has immense respect for you, perhaps is even a bit afraid. Someone as powerful as Gandalf would have a partner that is just as mighty. It takes him time to accept that you are just as friendly as your husband, too.
・゚✧ Frodo.
Tumblr media
While surprised, Frodo would be absolutely charmed to meet you. Gandalf is an old friend of the family, after all. Frodo would treat you just like that, though he would not immediately trust you as much as Gandalf (which, granted, is a whole lot of trust – hard to live up to!). He’d show great interest in who you are, what you do, etc. He would also tease your husband about how long he had kept you a secret and, depending on how said secret was lifted, that he wasn’t able to keep you hidden forever.
・゚✧ Gimli.
Tumblr media
I think much of Gimli’s view of Gandalf would change once he met his spouse. He’d be curious about who you are, where you came from, and how the two of you met. He’d probably try and find quiet moments to shower you in questions. Since he is such a fan of partnership and a little romantic himself, Gimli would encourage the two of you to be more open about your relationship. And since he’s also so mischievous, he’d definitely put you in a ‘stuck in a closet together’-sort of situation! His enthusiasm gives your relationship to Gandalf a whole new spark ♡
・゚✧ Legolas.
Tumblr media
Legolas would weigh his reaction depending on how his Fellowship reacts to finally meeting you, with a healthy dose of care and caution at first. It never would’ve crossed his mind that Gandalf would be in a romantic partnership. But because of Legolas’ easy companionship and friendly demeanour, you two would quickly form a bond. Maybe he’d ask you about stories he heard of Gandalf, wanting your confirmation on whether or not they were true – and if you had anything to do with them, of course!
・゚✧ Merry.
Tumblr media
Though surprised to meet you, Merry understands perfectly why Gandalf would’ve kept your relationship a secret. It is dangerous, being with a powerful creature such as him. He’d be very polite around you, almost uncharacteristically so. He wants to get to know you better, testing the waters, so to speak, before he dives in more meaningful conversations.
・゚✧ Pippin.
Tumblr media
Pippin would initially feel a bit betrayed, I think. How could Gandalf, such an old friend of the Hobbits, keep such a secret to himself? Over time, he would understand the reasons as they are presented to him, be it against danger or simply for privacy’s sake. If Pippin had any negative feelings about how this unfolded, none of them are directed against you. On the contrary, the playful Hobbit gets along with you very well! Part of the reason might be that Gandalf doesn’t call him a fool when you’re around, but that remains to be seen once you join Pippin in the little pranks he likes to plan…
・゚✧ Sam.
Tumblr media
Maybe you wouldn’t be such a surprise at all to Sam! Somehow, he’d just always assumed that Gandalf must have someone, because that is his flowery worldview. He’d congratulate the two of you for having such a wonderful partner to call your own. He’s so charmed by your sweet relationship that he’d have to be reminded to not go tell the world about it! Sam is also the perfect person to craft the most elaborate flower gifts with you, so that you always have the right present for any occasion – even if you and Gandalf aren’t keen on presents.
・゚✧ Bonus: Faramir.
Tumblr media
Being Gandalf’s pupil, Faramir has spent a lot of time with your husband. However, learning of his mentor’s spouse came as quite a shock to him. It is needless to say he’d carry your secret to his grave if he was asked to, because he would not want either of you in danger because of him. He would be extremely respectful and gentle toward you, as he always is. He’d sometimes ask your opinion of something he learned from Gandalf, or small talk when he sees you, but overall, he’d keep your friendship almost professional. That said, he is really happy for his mentor to have such a wonderful partner and always happy when he gets the chance to meet you.
・゚✧ Bonus Bonus Headcanons.
Tumblr media
Though not 100% lore accurate, I like to imagine Gandalf with someone just as ancient as him, a fellow “wizard/witch” who he can confide in. Two Istari living their best lives!
Alternatively, I also love to think of him as the magical adviser to a kingdom, where he eventually becomes the secret partner of the lonely ruler who would go through fire and water for their old wizard.
Anything with Gandalf is all the “old married couple” sweetness you can think of: sincere terms of endearment, gentle and not-so-gentle bickering alike, knowing the other inside and out etc.
You could spend hours in silence with him and never get uncomfortable.
Gandalf is a very playful partner. He’d be the type to pretend he forgot your anniversary/birthday/name day when in reality, he has an entire party/special date planned just for you!

______________
Dori & Nori Blue: Equivalent to late 20s to mid 30s. Eldest brothers and construction workers. Both love their little brother very much. Neighbors and close friends of the Durinsons. Nori moonlights as a cage fighter for Fili.
Ori Blue: Equivalent to late teens to early 20s. College student and ghost writer. Friends with Kili. Quiet. Has developed a crush on Dwalin despite the large age difference. Saddened but understanding that Dwalin has started avoiding him. Adores children and hopes to have his own one day.
Bifur & Bofur Toy: Equivalent to early 40s/mid 30s (respectively). Factory workers. Lively, funny, and friendly. Always down to help a friend. Gamble a lot.
Bombur Toy: Equivalent to late 30s. Cook at a cheap restaurant. Often takes food to his friends and holds neighborhood potlucks.
Bilbo Baggins: Equivalent to late 20s to early 30s. Library assistant until he gets fired, then bartender. Can be very sweet and charming but also absolutely unhinged. Does what he wants. Would never cheat on Thorin but when his boyfriend is acting possessive it makes him feel trapped and leads to arguments. Bilbo's dislike for some of Thorin's family and comments he makes also leads to arguments. It gets better when Bilbo is pregnant, but after Frodo is born the stress makes it worse again. Bilbo truly loves Thorin, they're just not healthy people.
Frodo Baggins: Equivalent to preschool age. Pretty normal kid so far. Sad when he can't see Thorin but trusts Bilbo when he says they'll see him again. Loves his cousins on both sides and his friends dearly. Inseparable from Sam when they're together.
Din & E Took: Equivalent to late 30s to mid 40s. Bilbo's cousins who rent out to him. Din is a lawyer and E is a stay-at-home mom. They have triplet girls and a baby boy. They don't approve of Bilbo's baby daddy and have raised concerns about Frodo, but that didn't end well.
Pearl, Pim, & Vinnie Took: Equivalent to mid elementary age. Triplets and good students. They love the new baby and like making him giggle.
Pippin Took: Baby. Maybe just started crawling. Likes playing with his sisters and cousins.
Doc & Esmeralda Brandybuck: Equivalent to late early 40s. Doc is an accountant and Esmeralda is a middle school teacher. They have one child and plan on no more. They honestly aren't very involved in much of anything or pay attention, but Bilbo's baby is cute.
Merry Brandybuck: Equivalent to early elementary age. Little troublemaker. Plays with his younger cousins a lot. Is already teaching baby Pippin how to steal cookies.
Happy Ham & Bell Gamgee: Equivalent to late 30s. Bilbo's neighbors. Ham is a gardener and Bell is a daycare teacher (she gets discounts while on the clock). They have six children and were delighted when they were informed Ham could get a vasectomy. Bell & Bilbo bonded while being pregnant with Sam & Frodo at the same time.
Hammy & Hal Gamgee: Equivalent to middle school age. Eldest Gamgee kids. Twins. They play sports.
Daisy & May Gamgee: Equivalent to late elementary age. Another set of twins. Daisy is learning guitar and May is learning piano.
Mari Beth Gamgee: Equivalent to early elementary age. Very sweet girl. Plays with Sam more often because he's the only one that will play baby dolls with her.
Sam Gamgee: Equivalent to preschool age. Best friends with Frodo since practically birth. Adores his siblings and parents. Never goes anywhere without his stuffed potato toy.
And I think that's it! Hopefully I'll start making dialogue & excerpt posts soon.

I may add more as I think of them, but here's my tentative estimation of how well different groups of elves as well as some individual elves deal with mortals in the Third Age (when lotr takes place).
Also known as: Why Legolas is Best Boy.
By the third age most elves have removed their ties to mortals. By and large, they do not seek alliances with mortal neighbors nor do they seek out mortal company. For example, the elves that Frodo and co stumble upon near the start of their journey are kind to them, but they are also - wild. I would say that they are not making very much effort to tone down their elven nature for the benefit of their guests. They are friendly and playful, but their time with the hobbits was only a brief moment of entertainment for them. They are not interested in involving themselves in mortal affairs.
The elves of Rivendell treated Thorin's company in much the same way, I think. I expect they do take dwarves a little more seriously than hobbits, but even so they really aren't concerned. They are content to laugh and tease and offer sanctuary for a time, but I don't think they generally thought very much about the dwarves, and I doubt that - though their hospitality left no complaints - any of them reached out to any of Thorin's company on a personal level. Again, by the third age elves seem not to be interested in knowing mortals.
The Lothlorien elves are more guarded, vigilant with their borders and distrustful of outsiders until their Lady gives her approval, but even then, while the fellowship received hospitality and the elves even indicated that they would have been willing to teach Sam rope making if he'd expressed interest, it doesn't seem like they try to make any personal connections. Most of them have been so removed from mortals for so long that they don't even speak Westron. They can be lighthearted and friendly, but in the same way as the other elves discussed so far; there's a distance to it. I rather think that they have stopped seeing mortals as individuals and instead when they speak to someone they are speaking to everyone of that race and culture that they've ever known, no matter how long ago that was. Or perhaps it is simply that when it is safe they will laugh and be playful regardless of who is in front of them.
The Mirkwood elves, on the other hand, are different. They are not as isolated as Bilbo seemed to think. They have a thriving trade system with Laketown and we see them sitting and eating with humans (when Thorin announces his return to the people of Laketown). There's a relationship there. We see it again when Thranduil aids and allies with Bard. I think this is the only elven culture we see in lotr that hasn't removed itself from dealings with mortals.
So even though I expect this is a coincidence, I find it fitting that Legolas came out of this culture. He is the one elf we see connecting with mortals, actually getting to know them and letting himself be known as well, fearlessly entangling his life with theirs. Arwen also falls in this category, but we don't spend much time with her, and her mortal connections boil down to...Aragorn. it's literally just Aragorn.
And I'm not knocking their love, mind you. I'm just saying that it's far different from Legolas, who loves Aragorn enough to follow him into what must have seemed like certain death, as well as taking the unprecedented step of bringing a dwarf into Valinor, as well as being part of the fellowship, as well as one of the Three Hunters.
Side note, I personally do ship gigolas - Gimli and Legolas, terrible ship name, I know - because honestly given their importance to each other and lack of interest in women I think shipping them just makes sense. But even if you don't, I don't think anyone's arguing that book!Gimli and Legolas don't share a profound bond.
Not to mention that as part of the Three Hunters, Legolas was so driven to find the hobbits that he didn't want to stop for the night and would rather have kept running.
And after the war he lived in and managed a small colony of elves close to and with frequent contact with mortal settlements.
And, again, his life with Gimli was so intertwined that he TOOK HIM TO VALINOR!!! Completely unprecedented, Gimli was never a ring bearer, but Legolas takes him anyway.
Brief note before I conclude -
I want to acknowledge Elrond. He is also very good with mortals, notably even raising one. He is the summer lord of hospitality, and his wisdom is rightfully renowned.
But there is a difference between acting as a sage and acting as a friend. Elrond helps mortals; he does not intertwine his lives with theirs in a lasting way.
Arwen does do that, but like I said, the only real relationship we see her have with a mortal is with Aragorn.
But Legolas. Legolas not only befriends mortals, he is ride or die for them. Of all the elves we see from Tolkien, (excluding those in the Silmarillion, which I have not read) he is the least distant and most...I won't say most human. But he is the most accessable to humans.
I think that's why he was sent on the quest. He wasn't the strongest, most powerful elf there by a long shot. But I think he was the only one who was open and curious and - I think - young enough to really get invested in these mortals on a personal level.
Therefore, Legolas is Best Boy and I love him.

as someone who loves The Lord of the Rings keenly, loves the books more than the films, and enjoyed The Silm more than LoTR on my first read, time and again it’s The Hobbit (film PLUS book) that gets the strongest reaction from me, even though it’s got the shallowest plot and the shoddiest execution.
The story is every other story. A man is called to adventure, reluctantly embarks, grows as a person, saves the day, and goes home changed. Idk how it’s different from every other archetypal hero quest. It is, though. I think it is maybe because The Hobbit is defined by its relationship to LoTR and that the films + post-LoTR writing fragments. Bilbo is the hero of The Hobbit but he is more important as Frodo’s guardian and a Ringbearer, and as those things he is most important as an eccentric. He’s an odd man who never married, who adopted an orphan into his house rather than having his own kids, who raised that orphan into an odd man. Bilbo in his default (LoTR) state is beloved but ostracized by his community, he constantly has visitors from abroad and in the end he leaves his home, he’s called out of comfort to the Wilderness. He is a traveller and a trickster by nature and thus never at home wherever he is, never comfortable unless he’s causing a bit of discomfort.
In short, the Bilbo that exists in perpetuity is a happy, kind-hearted man who enjoys life to the fullest, but is also a permanently uneasy figure living his best life in the shadow of Difference and Restlessness. So the story of The Hobbit is more personally wrenching (as opposed to the universal sense of sadness in LoTR) in hindsight, because it is how Bilbo-who-we-know came to be. We’re watching someone who was content to be completely comfortable become discontent and uncomfortable, and become so warped that he can never return fully to that comfort. This is a good thing in the story, because comfort is not happiness and so many good deeds come from Bilbo’s change, but it doesn’t come without cost.
The films play this up even more, focusing on what I’ll call the Arda Marred theme that runs through Tolkien’s Legendarium. The idea that evil/pain/sorrow is inextricable from good/love/happiness is repeated over and over. The final theme of the Ainur contains and encompasses Melkor’s dissonance. Beauty is constantly said to be ‘made greater [by] sorrow.’ Beren and Lúthien, the most optimistic tale of The Silm, ends by saying that the Eldar have lost their most beloved child forever until the world is broken. Sam gets everything he wants except Frodo, and because of that he is ‘torn in two.’
So in Bilbo’s journey, his growth into kindness and courage creates its own consequences. The compassion and empathy he finds, shown through his bonds with the Company and with Thorin (film especially), turns on him when the people he now cares about are hurt or threatened. His courage helps him save so many, but it also gives him the Ring which eats at him. Every step he takes into the Wild makes him a better and more broken person who we—the reader—know and love. Rather, we know how much better he becomes, but it hurts to see the costs he has to bear. Again this is a theme in Tolkien’s work; Bilbo isn’t special. But I think it’s more impactful because that is the story. The dragon and journey are just set decoration for Bilbo’s development, compared to world-shattering plots of LoTR/The Silm. Without anything else to care about, Bilbo becomes all we care about.
This is all stating the obvious but. Anyhow. The Hobbit is the story of a man in perfect content blandness who gets to uncover the hero he wanted to be and gets punished for it, he does everything right and what he gets for his bravery and kindness is to cry over the corpses of people he cared about (a reward because the alternative is never caring that much), to be cut off from his community (a reward because his soul wasn’t meant to be sedentary), and to never quite be satisfied again (a reward because he now knows exactly what he wants, as opposed to the simmering suspicion before).
And unlike other characters who undergo the same experience, of finding peace and victory while being hurt in a way that can’t heal, we don’t leave Bilbo to a happily ever after. We zoom out on Sam coming home, we leave Merry and Pippin on the road back from the Havens, Faramir and Éowyn go off to Ithilien and all we ever hear again is told distantly as history, we don’t meet them ever again and see the effects. Bilbo, on the other hand, we get to know in Fellowship and we can see the ways in which he’s not quite right. A little skittish. A little sour. A little cruel. A little tired. Lonely, but not in a way that can be comforted by other Shirefolk, lonely in a way he can only deal with by adopting Frodo, creating someone else who knows of a wider world. His damage is always on display.

#i do honestly think that at least in the movie verse bilbo and thorin would have eventually gotten together#their relationship has enough in it that if thorin had survived it would be natural for that to happen#also if fili and kili survived too#durin’s line being back in erebor and also thorin finally inheriting his title and winning back his homeland??#i cannot believe jrrt robbed him of that#and after what he had been through he would a wiser and more compassionate ruler#also kili and tauriel getting married and joining two families who had been enemies for years?#i know tauriel isnt thranduil’s daughter but she’s part of his household so it counts#a marriage between an elf and a dwarf..iconic#and of course bilbo being thorins’s husband#ive seen the word consort being used in fic#i think he would have stayed in erebor a while and helped it be restored and maybe even help with the governing#also even if he went back to the shire he would spend time in both places#also how great would it be for frodo to have an uncle whos a king#he would have gone to visit erebor too and around all the dwarves😭😭#also like the family gatherings tho..hobbits and elves and dwarves all together it would be so good#and thorin visiting the shire is just so good#and omg pippin merry and sam in erebor?? amazing#of course theyd want to come frodo#and later on another bond between the two families with legolas and gimli’s marriage..#and gandalf would just be extremely pleased with himself#lotr#the hobbit#bagginshield

Matchup request, @thatonefangirl111
Note: Hi! I wrote this one for @thatonefangirl111, I’m not sure how to feel about this one but I really hope you like it! I’ve never written for Harry Potter before but I’ve tried my best.
Tumblr media
The Hobbit
I ship you with... Fili!
You were a member of the company where you quickly became friends with Fili and Kili
The three of you would pull pranks on the rest of the company, and you especially liked to annoy Thorin, but you are always the one that makes sure you guys don’t go to far or do anything too dangerous.
Fili loves your loyalty. It’s a trait he values a lot in a partner, but he’s also glad you’re able to let loose and joke around with him.
The two of you become very close during the quest, but it takes a while for him to realize just how much he likes you.
One night when the company is setting up the camp, Thorin was being his usual grumpy self and said something that annoyed you, so you looked him dead in the eye and gave him a snarky remark that made Fili crack up and that is when he realised...
He was in love with you.
In the following days he tried to show you he wanted to court you in the traditional dwarven way. He would share his food, give you his furs when it got cold at night and he always made sure you had the most comfortable place to sleep, but because you weren’t a dwarf you thought he was just being friendly
One time he tried to flirt with you, but the moment he looked into your beautiful brown eyes all his confidence disappeared and left him feeling all shy and flustered.
It was adorable, and Kili teased him about it for the rest of the day.
One night when the two of you are on watch and talking about all kinds of science stuff (Fili adores the way you ramble) he asks you if he can braid your hair.
He’s a bit nervous to braid your hair, but also very excited. You two are the only blondes in the company, but Fili finds the softer shade of your hair far more beautiful than his own, and he adores your curls.
When he’s finished he taps your shoulder and shows you a beautifully carved, silver bead. He tells you the meaning behind braiding one’s hair and after nervously confessing his feelings for you, he asks if he can court you.
You, of course, say yes.
The two of you love to make and listen to music together.
There has been more than one occasion where he jokingly put on your glasses so you would have to chase him to get them back, only for him to run face first into a wall because he can’t see shit when he wears your glasses.
When Erebor is rebuild he encourages you to participate in some musicals and plays, knowing how much you love them. And you can bet he’s always gonna be there when you perform.
To Fili you are worth more than all the gold in Erebor, and he loves you with all off his heart.
Tumblr media
Lord of the rings
I ship you with... Eowyn!
The two of you met when you, Legolas, Gimli, Aragorn and Gandalf arrived in Edoras to save King Theoden.
After her Uncle was back to normal and had kicked Grima out, she sought you out to ask if you wanted to spar with her some time, noticing how good you are with a sword.
You became friends after that. You bonded over your love for swordfighting, and you shared your interest for music, while she told you about her love for horses.
When you told her you liked reading she brought you to this gigantic library where you spend the whole afternoon talking and reading.
Eowyn is impressed by how good you are at math and how easy you make it all seem.
One evening you find her sitting outside, softly crying. When she notices you’re watching she tries to wipe her tears away, saying that she is alright but you insist she tells you what is wrong. She tells you that she still mourns the death of her cousin, and that she’s worried about her brother. You know how she feels, as you are still grieving Boromir’s death and you’re worried about whether or not Frodo and Sam are alright. The two of you spend the rest of the evening trying to comfort each other, talking about your feelings. You try to cheer her up with your jokes, and for the first time in a long time she smiled, and it made you feel butterflies in your stomach.
After that you and Eowyn became even closer. She always asks you about what it’s like to be a cheerleader and she’s amazed by how much work you put into training, and she loves to talk with you about your favorite plays.
When the battle of the Pellenor fields comes you help her disguise herself as one of the men of Rohan and sneak out Merry to the battlefield. Both of you know that you are capable warriors, but you still promise to keep an eye out for each other.
It was a long battle. At first you were able to stay relatively close to each other, but when the oliphaunts came you lost sight of her.
After everything was over and Aragorn told you what had happened to Eowyn, you rushed to the medical wing to go and see her. When she saw you standing in the doorway she smiled and reached out a hand to you, and you confessed your feelings for her right then and there.
Once Eowyn was healed and Aragorn crowned king, the two of you were almost always together. Even thought Eowyn was now working as a healer, she still likes to spar with you. You two often go on dates, like horse-riding, going to watch a musical, or doing each others hair. Eowyn has some amazing tips to handle your curls.
When you started dating Eowyn she introduced you to her brother Eomer and the two of you hit it off pretty quickly, especially after he saw how smart and kind you are and how happy you make his little sister. Most of your interactions with Eomer incluce throwing snarky remarks at each other whenever you are in a 5 ft radius of each other, but it’s never ill intended and you always laugh about it.
You and Eowyn love each other very much and you are both super adorable and a power couple.
Tumblr media
Harry Potter
I ship you with... Fred Weasley!
You were in the same year as Fred, and you heard a lot about his and his twin’s famous pranks, but it wasn’t until your fourth year, when Ginny was taken to the chamber of secrets, that you started talking to him. You find him alone, wandering in the halls and because he looked a bit down (which was a rare sight) you started a conversation with him. You had heard about what had happened to his sister so you try to comfort him as best as you could.
After that you would often sit with him and George during breakfast and lunch, and you’d wave at each other when passing in the halls.
When you start your fifth year you share a train compartment with Fred and George, excitedly talking about going back for another year at hogwarts.
You often join him and his brother in their pranks, adding your own fun ideas while simultaniously trying to make sure no one gets hurt.
You also help him with his homework, because he often forgets about it, and although he doesn’t say it, he’s impressed by how intelligent you are.
You become very close friends with Fred and George during this year, and Fred loves your snarky remarks, it always cracks him up and he isn’t afraid to throw one back.
Fred doesn’t care what house you are in, but if you aren’t a Gryffindor there will be some playful competition between you two.
During your sixth year he started to flirt with you. At first you were a bit flustered, but you were quick to come up with a flirty response, which earned a grin from Fred and a dramatic groan from George.
‘‘For Merlin’s sake, get a room you two!’‘
Fred asks you out to the Yule Ball, and when he sees you walking into the great hall he can’t help but stare. Your beautiful dress complimented your fair skin, and your curly hair in a cute updo made your big brown eyes stand. He thinks you’re the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen.
You dance almost the whole night, but right before you want to return to your common room Fred takes you aside for a moment and asks if you want to be his girlfriend, kissing you when you say yes.
He loves that you’re a cheerleader, and he’d be over the moon if you were to cheer him on during a quidditch match. He always shows off when you’re watching him, giving you a wink before continuing the game.
You teach him how to play baseball and he adores it, especially when he gets to hold the bat, saying how it resembles being a beater in quidditch.
During you’re seventh year he pulls less pranks because of Umbridge’s rules and torture, but also because he want to keep you out of trouble.
He always keeps an eye out for you, comforting you after detention with Umbridge and trying to make you laugh when you feel stressed.
Seeing you smile, especially when it’s his doing, is his favorite thing ever.
You try all kinds of things to get around Umbridge’s stupid rule that says boys and girls can’t get too close to each other. Often you would sneak to each other’s (common) rooms to cuddle and talk, returning just before the sun would start to rise.
When Fred and George decide to leave Hogwarts you are the only one he tells, and after they chased Umbridge out of the castle Fred throws some last firework into the air that explodes in tiny little hearts all around you.
He loves you so much, and you always get free stuff at Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes.

yearly fic stats
thank you @hazzabeeforlou for the tag!!! I will probably update this all at the end of the month because I have some projects I’m planning to finish before the end of the year. BUT! In the meantime:
You can check these on AO3 by going to your dashboard and clicking through to statistics.
1. amount of works posted: 61
2. total wordcount: a whopping 442,357, making this my most productive writing year ever.
3. longest fic: gay metal au Bard/Bofur sequel!  All Night Long (87,774)
4. shortest fic: my cute sam watching Frodo while Thorin watches him  gay bag end fic,  The Charm About You (Will carry me to heaven) (855, MAKING this my shortest stand alone fic ever I think)
5. fic with the most kudos: my witcher rimming fic  I know that you would want it (if I could sink my teeth into you) (1134)
6. fic with the most bookmarks: same, witcher rimming,  I know that you would want it (if I could sink my teeth into you) (290)
7. fic with the most comment threads: predictably, Living After Midnight (237) the first story in the gay metal au and my first long multi chapleted piece in a while.
8. total amount of kudos: 13,521
9. total amount of bookmarks: 3,279
10. total amount of comment threads: 1,385
11. fandoms written for: THIS IS A WEIRD YEAR, BUCKLE UP. Cars, The Man From Uncle, Harry Potter, 1d,  Hannibal, and most BIZARRELY OF ALL, afi???? for returning fandoms. Then, I introduced a bunch of new shit. Spies in Disguise, GBBO, and then my fantasy kick, which was kicked off with the Witcher, landed for a very long time in Tolkien/The Hobbit, and recently leapt over to Merlin!
12. fests you’ve written for: 1!!! my own  @gigolasfuckfest2020
13. pairings written for: oh god, so many. for a minute I was piling on Tolkien ships like my life depended on it. Ummmm Doc/Lightning, Fem!Harry/Fem!Draco, Illya/Napoleon, Lance Sterling/Walter Beckett, James/John (I know, don't @ me), Geralt/Jaskier, Merlin/Arthur, and....ok, here are all the tolkien pairings lmaoooo. Bilbo/Thorin, Bard/Bofur, Sam/Frodo, Dain Ironfoot/Thranduil, Legolas/Gimli. I think??? that’s all!!!
14. favorite fic you’ve written this year: This is a tough one! Honestly I've written more fic than ever but more importantly, I genuinely lOVE it all. This has been such an amazingly rewarding year for me in fic and in the fandoms I've written in. It’s fucking amazing to feel a part of a community again, and appreciated for the work I do! So I have tons of fond memories for all the fic I've written, tbh. However, I’m gonna go with the House of Durin Series, or my gay metal AU, Living After Midnight and All Night long. Aside from it being genuinely just a blast to write (two novel length stories in four months!! I was on fire!!) I truly felt like these fics changed me. I got into metal through them, bonded so much with and learned so much from my dear friend @progmetallesbian, and got into so much new music. I also got to reconcile a lot of my past living in frats in Berkeley and write some fun healing stuff about that city. AND I MADE SO MANY AMAZING FRIENDS!!! it was just a joy and I can't wait to revisit this universe.
15. goals for next year: part three of The House of Durin series!!! I am also publishing some adapted one direction fics as original stories with a gay erotica press, and so I look forward to more professional jobs as well. honestly though, who knows what the future holds. I DID NOT EXPECT in any way to get into tolkien fic and start writing it so much, and I did’t really expect merlin either! I feel like whatever catches my fancy and inspires me is literally always a surprise, and at the end of the day this is my hobby and it brings me joy, so my only real goal is to continue to write whatever I damn please and have a blast doing it, which was really how I operated this year. and it felt great!
I tag @got2gh0st, @newleafover @cupcakentea @ahufflepuffhobbit @theresonlyzuul and @oliver-perks to share!!! no pressure though I know stats can be scary.

I just had a cruel and very angsty idea for a Hobbit/LOTR fic
So hear me out, it starts like half of fics do, with Bilbo having a child, who is Thorin's of course, but canon has happened by now and Durin's line has been practically wiped, and Bilbo is already struggling enough as it is and having a living reminder of the fact Thorin is gone is not helping, so he gives the child to the Elves of Rivendell to care for, mind you a few years down the line he still takes in Frodo, who though looks quite like Thorin, does soothe his poor heart.
Time skip to when Frodo is brought to Rivendell by Strider there is an extra member to join the fellowship, a masked person who barely talks and is only ever refered to as Moroval, who originally was only meant to escort them to Lothlorien
But by then Legolas has convinced them to join them for the rest of the quest, then the breakup of the fellowship happens and Moroval ever the one to finish his promises manages to escape with Frodo and Sam, and though they bond and Moroval is clearly talking more and getting softer they never take off the mask, that is until the ring is thrown into the volcano when out of nowhere in the way down orcs attack and thus the mask gets broken, still they escape and eventually everyone goes home.
There was this part I wanted to put in but I'm not sure of, where because Bilbo kept using the ring while carrying the magic got basically imbedded into Moroval's body, and when the ring is destroyed they lose all their magic which up until now was one of the reasons his help was needed.
So they go to Rivendell, but well Bilbo is still there, and though they don't blame him, Moroval does carry a bit of a grudge and ginormous abandonment problems, which only gets worse with the fact them and Bilbo just don't have a father and child connection while it's clear he was the parental figure to Frodo, this does not affect Frodo's and Moroval's connection though as they have grown friends after the quest, but one day he wears a... Very particular coat, a gift from Thranduil given to Moroval in his coming of age day, which brings back memories to hard to bear to Bilbo who finally explains why he gave Moroval away just a week or so before he is to leave to Aman.
The Rest of the fic is just Moroval Travelling and meeting his aunt Dís now that they are confirmed to be Thorin's child, maybe with a small conflict where they are thought by many of wanting to take the throne despite the contrary.
Anyways this got too long, what do you guys think?

🏳️‍🌈 Finarfin, Thorin, Fingolfin, Arwen
(so disclaimer for all of these, i’m pretty flexible with my queer headcanons especially wrt shipping!)
Finarfin: Mostly straight, very faithful to Earwen. Had a hard time adjusting to Earwen and Anaire’s relationship after the Flight of the Noldor, but he loves his wife so much that in the end he can’t really be anything other than supportive. Especially since he hurt Earwen by leaving, even if he did end up coming back.
So yeah, he’s mostly just really in love with his wife, but. BUT. i am also fond of Finarfin/Eonwe, so- I think he and Eonwe became very close during the War of Wrath, and Ara kind of started crushing on him, except like, is it really a crush? this is just bros being bros right? and he’s not gay, nah, so like...but what if it is tho?? and Eonwe is completely oblivious, not just to Ara’s feelings but to his own too, until like. after things settle down and Ara confesses to Earwen and she’s like “oooh, exciting” and romcom hijinks ensue, except things are awkward because Eonwe is the herald of Manwe (I have some particular hcs about Valarin sexuality, esp Manwe) and in the end Ara and Eonwe are like, not really sure what’s up between them and are mostly just bros...but also a little bit not. that’s a long and complicated way of me saying that they’re queerplatonic, lmao
Thorin: ooohhh boy. I was put off bagginshield for a long time because of the intensity of the fandom around them, and now I’m kind of on board, but like, Only Aspec Bagginshield Please. so i think Thorin is demi, attraction is like, literally the last thing on his mind; I have a soft spot for Dworin so in some verses I think they’ve got a thing going on? They’re definitely extremely close. But what I’m trying to get at, I guess, is that Bilbo is the first/only person Thorin’s like, actually confused and worried about possibly being in love with?? And my brain hurts if I try to think about Bilbo not being in the Shire to raise Frodo, even in the sappiest Bagginshield Everyone Lives AUs, so I think that Bagginshield is more of a ship doomed to pine than anything else, and them both being aspec makes that...easier, I guess? Like Thorin has feelings for Bilbo, but never planned his life around including someone like that, his devotion to Erebor and his people is much more important- if he and Bilbo do get their shit together it would have to be long-distance, because Bilbo loves the Shire and especially loves Frodo after he adopts him, and LOTR is practically impossible if Bilbo remained in Erebor. So yeah. Also, Thorin is trans, I don’t make the rules
Fingolfin: Lol, both Ara and Nolo are characters I’ve had some Thoughts about this ever since writing ATATYA, but since that fic is about the Feanorians I didn’t really get to explore his side of things. Anyway: Nolo is bisexual, but he kind of repressed himself until arriving in Middle-earth. He and Anaire had a good relationship for the most part, but when he started going overboard (in her eyes) with his attempts to make things right with Feanaro, they started to fight. Anaire and Earwen kind of always had mutual feelings for each other that they never acted on because they both loved their respective husbands, but when both the bros left during the Flight of the Noldor they went “fuck it” and got together. (As I mentioned above, Ara coming back complicated things, but after that it was very much “it’s us against the world”)
But back to Nolo: he and Anaire had a pretty terrible breakup right before he left, and when he didn’t come back but Ara did, he kind of assumed that Anaire would never want anything to do with him again, their marriage bond was pretty fucked up and while he was definitely still in love with her he kind of considered their relationship over. So he was basically single in Beleriand, and in a place like that, without the kind of rules he was used to in Valinor, he was freer to experiment, and that’s when he figured out he liked dudes too. I think he was with a couple mortal men (like Hador!) and while that was mostly good for him, he still was in love with Anaire and never settled down with anyone else (like another elf) because of that. He spent a lot of his time in Mandos being melodramatic about his marriage (and I’m teasing, but like, shit does suck, rip Nolo)- but by the time he was released, Anaire had had a long time to mull over what he’d done, and she decided she’d give him another chance. So I think they’re back together, but with a similar sort of thing Ara and Earwen have going on, because Earwen and Anaire are not letting each other go, and Nolo kind of has to prove himself to his wife. Which he is absolutely willing to do.
Also, mostly unrelated headcanon: post-reembodiment Nolofinwe is a funky grandpa who just loves spending time with his kids and takes them camping all the time. Arakano and Irisse love this; Findekano is just happy his family’s back together; Turukano is not a fan but goes along because he knows he should, and it’s a good excuse to try and reconnect with Maeglin who also hates the camping trips (but loves being included)
Arwen: i don’t have any set headcanons for her, I do like Aragorn/Arwen, I also enjoy Arwen/Tauriel, I’m down for whatever wrt to her. she’s probably bi? and I think she’s demiromantic, because she was by herself for a very long time before Aragorn came along, so it was probably a surprise to her that she had feelings for anyone at all, and she went 100% in on that relationship. until death do ye part, and all that...

Hello! Earlier today I saw your post about LOTRO and on a whim downloaded it. I'm gonna be honest and say I don't really know much about the whole LOTR universe outside of like, the movies, but the way you wrote about it was really passionate and interesting. I haven't played yet since it's 3AM but I was wondering if you had any tips or anything?
Hi there! Wow, I’m honored that you liked my post enough to download the game! I really hope you like it. I’m not sure if you mean that you have or have not seen the movies, but honestly just that alone is enough to comprehend the game. They do an excellent job of keeping things coherent for any potential audience they may get as players. For those who are superfans, there’s a LOT of easter eggs and thoughtful, witty references to the deep lore (doing, of course, what they can with limited copyrights, aka. they can’t use Silmarillion material that wasn’t referenced in LOTR). Having an in-depth knowledge of background history and culture of Middle-earth regions and races always makes the experience richer (because they are very accurate and I get excited about that). But for those who aren’t long-time fans, so long as you have heard of Middle-earth and know about the general plot then you should be good to go!
The game takes place during the time of LOTR, and runs parallel to the book/movie events of the Fellowship of the Ring undertaking the journey to Mount Doom and Sauron waging war on the Free Peoples for control of the One Ring. You start out as a small person in a wide world, and eventually grow in prominence as a hero so that you are known throughout Middle-earth and travel to far-flung lands to help the Free Peoples. Sometimes you interact with the protagonists (Frodo, Legolas, Aragorn, etc) and directly move the plot along, but often you are doing the deeds that the great lords can’t afford to - staving off the darkness that tries to take hold under the noses of kings and armies. You save lives, reunite families, hold off invasions, and bring peace wherever you go. You end up being the front line against evil that creeps in from all sides, while the Fellowship undertake their appointed tasks far away.
That’s basically the gist of it. You’ll start off in tamer, more familiar regions - the Shire, Bree-land, Thorin’s Halls, and work your way to the plains of Rohan, the walls of Minas Tirith, and to Mordor itself. It’s an incredible journey, and you make countless friends along the way. Those relationships are one of LOTRO’s best features - people you help will come back to help you, paths cross again in unexpected ways, and your actions have lasting influences.
As for advice for a new player, hmmm…. I would recommend lotro-wiki  as a primary resource for learning aspects of the game, reading relevant lore, helping you find things or places you need, etc. You’ll start off the game in a closed-world intro until level 6 or so, where you’re taught the ropes - how to attack, interact, use the UI, and so on. But once you’re let loose, I say don’t feel the need to rush. Explore the world a bit - well, the parts where you’re on-level otherwise you’ll be DOA. But there’s a LOT to discover, and just wandering around your starter region, seeing what different NPCs do, can help you get your bearings. Turn off world chat lmao. You’ll be bombarded with stuff you don’t want, and it will clutter your gameplay (this is an option in your chat box, under filters, if you right click the general tab). Then you can actually hear yourself think! Follow the tutorials, some of the information can be difficult to find again if you skip it. Know also that there’s a lot of things you can do that isn’t given in tutorials. Emotes, dances, cosmetic clothing, pets, kinships, and much more, are things that you find in time, but if you know it sooner, you can get tricked out from an early level ;D If you are confused or don’t know how to do something, just ask. People will help! Additionally, I will say that for a first time player, hunter class may be a good idea (*boos from the crowd*). It’s generally regarded as an easy class, as it is ranged with high damage, and you will have teleport abilities and run speeds unmatched by any other class. However, choose what you want, and know that you’ll have a chance to play multiple classes with more characters!
Knowledge of the lore isn’t necessary for almost anything in the game - even if you RP, it rarely delves into serious Middle-Earth history lessons. Most people know something of ~generic fantasy worlds~ with elves, orcs, halflings, etc, at this point, since they’re all based off Tolkien. And I am sure for an unfamiliar player, the dialogue/plot will be even more interesting and exciting cause you will be learning about Middle-Earth - some of the best parts too, the little things, the day-to-day lives, the thoughts and feelings, hopes and apprehensions, of a world living in an age of war and uncertainty for the future of their existence, one with beings both young and very very old, all with different perspectives. Read NPC dialogue. It’s all incredibly well-written and enjoyable, and I’ve cried so many times at touching words. They’re not all happy endings, but they’re good stories. Knowing you have the power to make a difference fills you with such hope and strength!
Most of all, feel free to contact me in the game (or here) if you would like help, a tutorial or tour, or just someone to hang out with! Folks are very friendly. I hope you decide to join the Landroval server, which is where I am! It’s known as a social/laid-back roleplaying server that has a solid reputation for hospitality. There is also a chat channel - advice, I think - where you can ask your questions to the server world. Attend concerts, listen in on roleplaying (the Prancing Pony is best for that), participate in annual events like festivals or treasure hunts. Get the quadpack (contains major regions like Moria that you will need when you hit around level 50) during the Christmas sale. Buy other regions in-game with lotro points!
You’ll form a lasting bond with Middle-Earth and your place in it. Let me know how you’re liking it once you get settled! If you’d like to find me in-game, my most played characters are Namadith, Gorthauron, and Farrokhbulsara. Just send me a message using your mailbox, or add me as a Friend in your social panel, which will then alert you when I am online. You can then invite me to a fellowship or send me a tell (a DM). And after a while, if you find that you’d like to have company, you can join a kinship and be part of a community (maybe even ours, Dwarrowdam!).

A few more Hobbit thoughts, mainly Bilbo and Thorin, and a small snippet of a probable story
So, I'm working on my next few pieces for my Hobbit AU and something popped up that I have been thinking about a while. Now, don't get me wrong, I love to see awkward Thorin. It's adorable. Seeing a King put out of his element is great...
Having said that though, something I see a lot in fanfiction is that Thorin is utterly clueless when it comes to children, especially a little Frodo whereas Bilbo takes to it like a fish to water. Again, I like these stories because they always have some awesome cute and bonding moments.
But honestly? I think it would be reversed.
Thorin, at least by most fan (and the movie's backdrop, possibly the book's) standards helped to raise Fili and Kili. Several of the actors stated that Thorin has developed a "father-like" relationship with his nephews. Given that dwarves appear to age slower than Men or Hobbits (at least by most fan interpretations as we have no canon on how they actually age, save they live to be around 250) and value the children they do have like gold, Thorin should probably be old hat at this. I'd imagine a Hobbit child would be much easier than a Dwarf child.
Then, we have Bilbo, who while an awesome character is the definition of a major introvert. Heck, in the books, he states that he uses his magic ring to avoid social situations. It doesn't look like he has much interactions with other Hobbits before his adventure, let alone Hobbit children. By the time Frodo is orphaned originally, he has developed some skills but I still stand by the fact that he would be a novice at best!
I'd love to see more stories where it's Thorin showing Bilbo the ropes.
Dabbled in it a bit....
***
All of this had been planned so well. Bilbo had made plans for Thorin’s arrival, taking into account the Dwarf King’s horrific (or non-existent) sense of direction. By all accounts, Frodo should have been back with Primula and Drogo a whole day before his old friend arrived.
That was not what had happened.
For probably the first and only time in his life, Thorin had arrived early and with nary a bit of trouble locating Bag End. Per his explanation, he had seen no reason to stop one eve, given he was quite energetic and pursued onward through the night, cutting almost two days from his journey. It had resulted in him arriving late in the evening, not two hours after Primula had dropped off Frodo.
So much for Bilbo’s well-laid plans.
Yes, yes, he had been looking forward to this visit but now he was very much tempted to strangle his old friend with his own braids. The infernal dwarf was laughing at him. He was! Standing in the shadow of the doorframe, watching his struggle with a twinkle in his eyes, a rumbling chest and occasionally taking a drag from his pipe. Even in his sleeping slacks and night tunic, the blasted dwarf managed to look intimidating and Bilbo Baggins did not appreciate being laughed at. Not one bit.
Snarling, if just a bit, Bilbo countered “Well, Mister-Informed, feel free to try your hand at this!”
Putting out his pipe and laying it on the table, Thorin remarked, surprisingly, “Alright.”
The Hobbit was forced to admit that he had not anticipated this response. However, he was willing to relent and let his friend try. Perhaps then he would stop this laughter! Let’s see how the dwarf felt when he was the one on the receiving end of the faunt’s protests. Everyone knew it was far easier to criticize than correct! While still keeping a hand on the baby’s chest to prevent him from falling, Bilbo gave a simple nod to his friend as he approached. The blasted dwarf wasn’t even looking at him or the baby! He was looking around the room as if an answer to the predicament would appear.
Thorin knelt, scooping up something from the bag Primula had left and approached, dropping to one knee to make the process easier. His large hand replaced Bilbo’s and he inquired in that deep voice “His name is Frodo, yes?”
Nodding in response, Bilbo stepped back and he was rather astounded at what followed.
Thorin Oakenshield had always been a rather gruff and stern figure but as he looked down at the infant faunt that was barely as large as his hand, the King Under the Mountain smiled and it was a smile that spread through his face and up to his eyes. His gravelly voice softened significantly and one finger gently poked Frodo in the nose, “Ah, little Frodo, I know this is hardly fun for any of us…” he paused, dropped his voice and oh, was that…yes, that…he was heightening it! “But, would you look here?” The Dwarf King twirled his fingers, producing the small brightly colored plush flower he had retrieved from Primula’s bag. “Look at that, just for you, my lad!”
With the colored plush less than an inch from his face, Frodo’s eyes lit up. His attention was focused and little gummy hands reached up and grasped the stuffed item, immediately bringing it to his mouth, intent on exploring it with his gums. With the faunt’s attention occupied, his squirming ceased.
Thorin, with far more precision than Bilbo was aware any being possessed, let alone a dwarf with such large hands, took this opportunity to wipe the little faunt down with a dampened cloth that Bilbo had laid by the table, dry him, and then with nary a pause in his procedure, wrap the lad within new layers of cloth. All of this was done within a few seconds and then the chuckling king was scooping the child up and settling him in Bilbo’s astounded arms. He cleaned up the table, again with such detailed precision, before heading towards the washroom.
Bilbo, the now quiet faunt happily chewing on his toy, still in his arms, followed.
“Thorin…” He inquired, softly. “I…when…since when do you know such about infants?”
Loud, boisterous laughter greeted him as Thorin rubbed his hands down with soap and water. “Oh, you know little, Bilbo Baggins. That is hardly the first nappy I’ve changed in my life nor is little Frodo the worst. I’d wager that Fili was far worse. Kicked and screamed as though you were killing him, he would. I also suspect that when my Kili finally settles on his one and sires the children he wants so desperately, I will be showing him the same tricks.”
Eyes wide, the gentlehobbit of Bag End inquired “I…did not know dwarven men took such a hand on rearing their young.” He rubbed his neck nervously, hoping he had not offended him. Much as they knew one another and as well as they got along, there were still aspects of one another’s culture that were alien. “Among hobbits, while we certainly love our little ones so, it is primarily the women that tend the child-bearing tasks, especially these kinds of matters. My father was much more an educator and potential playmate.”
“Dwarf children are very rare, Mister Baggins,” Thorin provided as answer, “When we are blessed with some, it would hardly be appropriate to place the majority of the burden on our dwarrowdams.” Pausing, he added “Though, yes, our ones usually do take over such tasks as nursing and bathing and the like.”
Raising a brow, Bilbo asked “But not you, Thorin?”
Smiling that warm smile of his again, the dwarf shook his head, stepping out to stand by his friend and smile at the contented faunt. “Aye, not me, Mister Baggins. I decided early on, back when my sister first announced she carried a babe within her, that whether her husband was involved or not, I would be.”
