Thai Names & BL

Why SO Weird (to Westerners)

You're looking for information on the Thai chue len.

We might say "nickname" but the actual translation is "play name." And it's what an anthropologist might call a "use name." So this is the name you go by IRL, not necessarily your legal name.

First I should say that this is a lot more common than westerns realize, even in our own past. Many Roman women, for example, we know operated under what amounts to a chue len. And it was probubly quite common among the lower classes in Ancient Egypt and Greece, too. But since the poor and females are chronically understudied there isn’t a ton of data (or written records, for that matter).

The chue len has to do in part with the history of names in Thailand, and the fact that until relatively recently most people only had a given name and a chue len, and then when government regulations went into effect mandating a last names it quickly became really complicated.

You can read a great article on Thai naming conventions here. It’s fun to learn about. I highly recommend it. And I am going to assume you did read it and now talk only about the bits left out and odd.

The bit most BL watchers ask me about is answered in this statement:

“Many Thai nicknames are derived from English words. They may be English sounding names (such as ‘Anna’) or more obscure words that are chosen for their meaning, e.g. Book (symbolising intelligence), Bank (symbolising wealth).”

However, like most English words used in Thai, they aren’t pronounced the way we would pronounce them. (Hell when have you ever heard an American pronounce something like a Brit, anyway?)

One amusing example is “bur” which is Thai for “phone number.” It’s our word, but they made it... better. You can watch Dean ask for Pharm’s digits using just this one word (in the scene where he drops him off for the first time in UWMA).

What the article doesn't say about chue len is that sometimes they are chosen for fun/silly as a baby name (like fatty) and then changed by the person themselves at any point in their life.

You can opt to change your chue len whenever you want, since it's not a legal name. Also its not uncommon to have different ones with different groups (so one for friends, another for family, one for the public if you’re a celebrity, another for your lover).

Daonuea (literally starnorth AKA Polaris or the Northstar) in Star in My Mind does this, he uses two: Nuea with friends, Dao with intimates.

I hope you can see how in a language where you use your OWN NAME for the I pronoun regularly, this is VERY easy to do?

Also, the article doesn’t say that a chue len can also be based on a popular band/idol/actor at the time of birth. I understand from my Thai bestie that Golf/Gulf was one of these for a while back in the 90s? I think.

Anyway, I also found Thai names odd to start, now I barely notice or register. Partly because what we read in English captions often doesn’t really sound like what’s being said.

For example, both Tine & Type sound the same to me, like Tyyyyee.

Also I amuse myself with wondering how they got that name. Like if a baby is named Bbomb - erm, did they blow out their diaper all the time? Probubly not because that’s very English culture specific, but I’m still amused. Was War a really violent child? Are all those Flukes happy accidents? Why is Gameplay called Gameplay? Was he a big gamer who chose it for himself? Or did his parents get together because of an in-game romance?

It’s fun to think about the reason, because there usually is one.

There’s another naming convention the article doesn’t really talk about, which is all the chue lens amongst siblings often either rhyme (e.g. Win & Lin in Cupid’s Last Wish) or start with the same letter. Thai BL Kpop idol Bambam of GOT7 talks about this (he and his sibs all have B names). And also, hilariously, the fact that he actually doesn’t know his own brother’s given name because they have always just used the chue len with each other so he never had to learn it.

Some actors will take and go by (at least for a time) a more western sounding name (Phoom --> Pavel) but you’ll hear their Thai friends using their Thai name or a different chue len (much like some Korean idols). Others will go by a Thai name for in country work (Stewart --> Perth).

There is an episode of 2022′s Safe House where GMMTV actors all talk about their use names and where they come from and their siblings names etc... but no one ever translated it and I’m a dumbass who didn’t save that ep to link, sorry.

Here on Tumblr we tend to tag actors by their chue len + given name, partly because many actors choose that as their social media handles on IG etc...

Minor rant, yes I did just come from the Big Tugg video on how english is stupid and I entirely agree with him on that

What I do not at all agree with is the opening of the video entirely dedicated to hating children - he just goes out of his way to say "oh yeah before I start this video, I fucking hate kids" and then gives a list of things kids don't know, (because, they're kids) and dunk on them for not knowing stuff

And I find it kinda ironic the person who says that kids should not feel proud of learning- sorry, memorizing- the alphabet, also mispronounces the word Celtic not ten seconds later. Perhaps we all could learn a thing or two by expanding our general knowledge and studying cultures and languages outside our own?

Speaking of languages, side-tangent-within-a-side-tangent, removing s or k and compounding them both into c is a shit take that I'm seeing way too much, when the obvious answer is to get rid of c, it only functions as a replacement for s or k and in either function it creates unnecessary problems (it's really unnecessary for "unnecessary" to be spelt like that but different topic) and that's why a Bunch of fucking languages around the world do Not include a c, such as the language I was forced to learn since birth and Still cannot speak: Afrikaans. There is not a single c in that language and I have never had a spelling mistake from s or k ever. Other mistakes sure but not concerning those.

And you may be wondering "well why can't we just contract the sounds into less letters to save space in the alphabet?" Because while that would not necessarily be so bad, that shit gets real out of hand real fast the more you do it, and all I'm saying is don't come knocking when you can't spell doodle when your a's are also e's and your u's are also i's

Anyway back to the topic of hating kids

This may seem like a wildly specific rant about one youtuber mentioning it offhand once, but I assure you this is not the first time today I've heard this. I hear this multiple times a week. From different people

For some damn reason it's kinda always been a popular take to hate kids and openly talk about how much one would like to see them suffer, and I don't fucking understand it at all???

Like, ok, you find their constant questions and mumbles and movements and other weird sounds very annoying, cool, I find the several cats outside my window doing many unsavoury things to each other each and every night annoying but I still don't talk about it like it's ok to hurt them

And maybe we can take a moment to rationalize the fact that kids tend to ask a lot of dumb things and say a lot of dumb things, because they're dumb?? they have far less experience on this earth than anyone who knows the definition of "economy", and do not yet know how to do basic living shit like how to cook a whole ass chicken, and they don't need to just yet, that's the point

People who don't know shit are going to do and say things as a consequence of not knowing shit

And this is very much a long-winded vent about something that doesn't really effect me at all, but I do in fact see it as a personal problem because not too long ago I too was a kid that didn't know shit, and I was a piece of shit because of it, sure, but something I very much remember is having to deal with people who hated me simply for existing, and I no longer have to deal with people hating my existange as a child, yes, but I still have various other unchangable things about myself that people hate me for, so through that experience I don't think it's a good thing to hate kids just because they're kids, regardless of how annoying the youtube comments are, and at the very least if you're going to think the spawn of your fellow humans are actually the spawn of satan, please do not talk about like it's a normal ass thing

And hey, maybe there's also a part of my brain that has yet to even fucking register that I'm in my roaring 20's now, so that may be why when I come across people hating kids I feel personally attacked

So with that knowledge, if you say to me that you hate kids, for whatever reason, rest assured I already hate you

2. Witches Are Meant to Burn: Magic

I know! I know how words work, okay? I know that sayings rely on context, and old sayings have old contexts that we might not know about anymore. Their meanings can change, they can be cut in half, words can get mis-said and change over time.

Did you know, for example, that the original saying of “the horse arrived” had a second part? “and it brought someone along.” This means the opposite of the way we use it today! Funny right? I could go on about how this happened but that's not the point.

Anyway, I also thought about the possibility that “witches” is a misspelling, maybe the unison of some words. That's the reason I studied history and etymology so hard! I looked through every word that resembled witches. ALL OF THEM. Even 'uytch', you know, the dish from a country far away that doesn't speak our language and much less has our saying.

In no moment I found a word (or several of them) that fits the sentence and is old enough to match the age of this saying. I might be wrong though. Am I a complete genius? Yes. Do I know everything? No.

There is another thing about this saying; it is old. I can't track back the exact date but this is so old, old enough that our language has changed a lot since its creation. How do I know that? Well, I wasn't accurate when I said there is nothing about witches registered, because there is. It's inside a cave (which I have visited. Great trip. My students fought each other over who would come along. Great fight).

This cave is important, it was locked up for CENTURIES, and the language used there is so old that some sentences are almost unrecognizable. It was located years back and has been the source of new studies and theories in diverse fields. Point is, the walls are completely scribbled over, it seems to have started in an organized way but I could see how it soon became messy.

The scribbles were not made with some paint or ink, nor carved with stone or sharp tools. It was burnt, well, it was carved using a heated tool. Every letter (and it was a cursive alphabet!) was individually carved like this, as in, a small hot tool was pressed on the wall and twisted once (only once) to make a small hole, the process was repeated over and over to make the words. I don't want to lose track of the point, but I must say each word was at least ten centimeters tall and half a centimeter deep in the walls, and the tool was at most a millimeter in diameter. I need you to understand that centuries ago these people heated this small little needle-like thing and pressed on the wall over and over and over, thousand and thousand of times to write these words down. The spot where the letters were could be messy, but each letter was very carefully made. So you can see why the scholars go crazy about this place.

There are many mysteries about this site, many of them fall into my field but you don't want me rambling about it. Back to the point, the “witches are meant to burn” saying was written several times (I touched them back then, they were hot enough to cause pain), and along with them there were prayers and other sentences meaning mostly two things: fate and sorrow (so the witch saying fits well in there even when they are centuries of context and history apart from each other.) I need to emphasize that the saying was written in the same way we use it today, even with the dates so far apart, maybe back then they still had the context though.

If I could meet whoever wrote that on these walls and ask what a witch is they most likely would look at me as if I’m an idiot, after all, who wouldn’t know such common sense? (or at least I believe it was common sense since the continent being so large didn’t stop the saying from being said all over it). Ah, the riches I would pay to walk around the continent so far back and watch with my own two eyes what I can only speculate about!

Witches, whatever they were, were most likely really well known, maybe not important, maybe not essential. But known. Now, is it just me or this word, these witches, are so old and meaningful and should have been more talked about? I know, there are many sentences at that site (it's a really important site) but out of all of them, this is the least researched one! And it’s the only one used until today!

“Why?” I asked a colleague one day. “I get people not being obsessed about it as I am, but why is no one looking for it at all? All of the other stuff in that cave is being thoughtfully studied by so many academics but why is this one just ignored?”

“I can't speak for others,” she said, pausing to think. “But it just doesn't… draw me, it's as if it's a closed case? It kind of feels like nothing interesting will come from it. I am not talking down your work! You are amazing and dedicated and even if I'm not interested in witches or whatever I always read your papers because you are just great at it, but this word is like… boring, I just… can't explain it another way.”

Other academics (and common people) had the same opinion as if this single subject killed the insatiable curiosity of humanity. Even my own students don’t seem interested in it, only the older ones, it looks like if I force them to hear about it almost every day for years they come to either hate the subject or be curious about it. Anyway, this seemingly instinctive disinterest in this word is odd, in an irrational way.

I don't allow myself to act irrationally in front of others, being obsessed is one thing and being irrational is another. It would compromise my reputation as a scholar, it would make my research look childish and bullshit. I can't have that. So I don't tell them about the hot words, I don't show them my notebooks or the hidden, smaller secret library about magic.

I have mixed feelings about magic. On one hand, I'm an academic and know very well how people wrongly believed in magic centuries back and how everything was proved to be just myths. On the other hand, this word is hot against my skin and my skin only, I'm drawn to it so strongly while everyone seems to want to forget about it. I don't have a rational way to explain it so I allow myself to be irrational. As long as it doesn't interfere with my studies, of course.

Magic isn’t my field. Do you wonder why someone who can feel what I can and feels the need to uncover the origin of this singular word has not tried to specialize in magic? Well, magic does not exist, there is no field just for that. I study history and magic history with it though so let me explain the basics.

Magic has two main divisions: ‘hands of fate’ and ‘hands of god’

Hands of fate weren’t (as people seem to think) just a huge storm over a sinner’s farm or a carriage accident by a runaway bandit. It was everything. It could be the death of an innocent child or the sheer luck of an assassin. It had no regard for justice or fairness, much less cared about humans' morals. It was a leaf falling from the tree, a mother choosing her child’s name, everything, and every choice.

I can make the correlation between the belief in magic that our society used to have and the way our society still so intrinsically believes in fate today, sometimes it’s as if the name just changes. If I say “magic controls our life” I’ll be called crazy but “fate controls our life”? That’s just a common belief. That’s one of the reasons “witches are meant to burn” is used so often, because what happened was meant to happen the same way witches are meant to burn.

Hands of god are what people truly think of when the word magic comes up, the ability to control the present and the future, if hands of fate set everything in stone, hands of god break the rocks and write a new, ever-changing, history. This is where recipes of foods meant to make one live forever, chantings to attract luck, and everything that humans can actively make is. Contrary to the passive point of view of hands of fate.

I’m sure I don’t need to say, since you must know how society works, but such beliefs weren’t quite liked back in the day. It was said that breaking a line of fate created disaster. So you shouldn’t, for example, use the hands of god to save your dying child, because if you do so some village far away may suffer from hunger. Doctors were hunted down, medicine was criminalized, to fight for your future was to fight against other people’s future and every single act of kindness could be read as selfishness attack and punished as such.

Witches are meant to burn, whether they want it or not.

In the current days, the belief in ‘fate’ (similar to hands of fate) is still strong, but no one believes in ‘magic’ (hands of god and the disaster it brings) anymore. It’s like a godless dead religion, a myth, but fate is just… the way people go on about their life. It’s a curious thing, actually, there was never a god widely worshiped in this land. People here believe something is there and this something decides their lives, but there was no need to worship this deaf being, even the hands of god fight against this mysterious “fate” instead of begging for mercy from it. It is an acceptance of god, if anything. Theology is not my field either but it does draw my attention from time to time.

Well, that’s enough crash course on magic, I’ll just finish it with an academic joke brought upon us by the coincidences of life. As I said, the hands of fate carve the destiny in stone and the hands of god break the rocks. That cave — as highly agreed upon— meant to represent the ‘hands of fates’ so isn’t it such a funny thing that it was brought to light by erosion? If magic was real, the ones who practiced it would be proud of themselves.

I am one of a small number of Spanish speakers at my store, so I often get asked to take over calls or head up to other floors to help with Spanish speaking customers who just can’t communicate in English or just prefer using Spanish. This past week I actually had a higher number of Spanish incidents than I usually do, and a couple of them were so funny.

First of all, I had to take over a phone call that shaved a few years off my life, because basically the person wanted to cancel their e-mail subscription (something that as a physical retail location we have nothing to do with, but I guided them through it regardless because why not?) because they were moving to Germany the next day and wouldn’t need it anymore. I helped them and everything was fine other than my questioning how you managed to get to a point where you’re moving to a whole other country but you can’t figure out how to unsubscribe from an email, but whatever, fair enough, we all have our qualms. The actual funny part of this came later on that same day when I was retelling the story to some coworkers, and as I was telling the story I started it off by saying that ya know, I greeted the person on the phone by saying “Hola cómo te puedo ayudar? Hi, how can I help you?” But then remembered none of my coworkers knew any Spanish so I’d be having to repeat the conversation twice in different languages the entire time if I didn’t decide to just use one language, so I decided to just drop the Spanish and continue my story in only English, so that what I next said was, “And then the customer was like, ‘I need to unsubscribe from your emails,’” which caused all of my coworkers to just die from laughter. They had misunderstood, they thought that because I had dropped using Spanish to retell the story, that likewise the customer, after being put on the phone with me, had just switched to English. As in like, they thought that maybe this person was like “oh no, I don’t wanna talk to no white people, I wanna talk to a latine.” Which like no, and god that would have been HILARIOUS if it was the case and almost kind of sad it wasn’t. The other funny incident was just the other day, I got a call from another coworker on a different floor who needed a Spanish speaker for a customer, he told me he was trying to see if she was willing to just talk to me over the phone, but she didn’t seem to be understanding what he was asking, and so I told him I’d be up soon, I just needed to pull my coworker from the register where she’d gone to help with the line, so that way we’d have someone on the floor while I went up. After a couple of minutes, almost five, I was able to pull her and then I headed upstairs to see if the customer was still there and needed help. Luckily she was still there, so I go up and in Spanish ask her how can I help her, to which she replies in the most monotone and dead voice possible, “Where is the exit?” no inflection, no emotion, no nothing, to the point it takes me a second to reply that the exit is down in the first floor, she then proceeds to ask me, in the exact same voice, if she can take the elevator, which is yet such another obvious answer that I just reply yes, and literally within 0.0000001 second she has turned away from me and has headed to the elevator to go back down, even though she had been several feet closer to the escalators that also would have taken her down probably faster than waiting for our slow ass elevators. And I was just like, this entire conversation was such a waste of my time that its only redeeming feature is that it got me a couple minutes of overtime.

i love leap years. i love that the calendar year is a social construct and sometimes we just all agree to throw in an extra day (or, in the case of lunisolar calendars, an extra month). i love that it's possible to have a birthday that some years just doesn't exist. i love that our tracking system for a natural phenomenon is imprecise enough that we're noticeably out of sync after only four years. (but also, four full years! not too shabby!)

i love lentils. there was a "let's make some soup poll" going around recently that ENRAGED me because lentils were not an option. yes many soups do not contain lentils and sometimes i even make and eat those soups...but to not offer them as a possible response was a slap in the face that lentils don't deserve. i once made lentil soup and some errant lentils found their way underneath a dish that i left in my sink for like two weeks and when i finally got the courage to wash that dish i found that the lentils had sprouted...not a good look for me as someone who should clean the sink more often, but the point is they're just little guys...straining for the sun with their little leafs....please don't forget about them 🥺

i love language. i love the creativity of it. i love that alongside its versatility and endless potential it is also by definition understandable…like no matter how far we take it, it only really remains language if it's communicating something from one person to another. and it's so human: fallible and incomplete and always changing, just like us. it exists because we are social creatures. the things it has allowed us to do! what a different existence this would be if the only things we could experience or learn about were the things available to our own immediate senses. plus all of my favorite types of humor are language-based. actually maybe i should branch out with my interests lol. think about things other than language for a change…

i love labelmakers. love me the fuck out of some labels. love making 'em, love sticking 'em to shit. in college i worked in a cafe where we had to wear nametags and i would just make myself a new name with the resident labelmaker (stored under the register) whenever i felt like it. i still have that nametag actually. it says my name is WANDA.

i love libraries. currently avoiding my local library because of the holds (there are so many) but i'm glad it exists. knowledge wants to be free!!! i love that i've had my library card since i was a wee bairn and it has my little kid handwriting on it. i love locating a nonfiction book in the sprawling morass of the dewey decimal system. it's probably not that hard but it feels like an accomplishment every time. i love libraries with big staircases and full-wall windows. i love seeing people sitting in chairs reading.

i love paintings of light on water but i'm not sure if that should go under P instead and i feel like i talk about it all the time so i'll spare you.

i love lyrics...especially stupid lyrics. especially abstruse lyrics. especially lyrics with sick rhyme schemes. especially lyrics that sound incredibly facile if you say them with normal cadence and pitch. that's why they're lyrics and not non-lyrics! they're meant to be sung!! i love stuff that's exactly what it's supposed to be and you maybe don't even notice until you try to make it something it's not. i love when it takes thirty years for me to realize i have no idea what the lyrics mean, or that i've been singing the wrong words all along. i love that lyrics are made by a person to a purpose. i especially love it when the lyrics come written down with the album. when nobody got me i know cd liner notes got me.

#except when the cd liner notes don't have lyrics in them which is like. what is even the point #so i'm choosing to ignore those. they don't count. they are dead to me #asks #not anon #okay this is the last of the letter asks! So today was “anatomy and physiology” and “pregnancy options” in 7th grade sex ed. It actually went better than you would have expected. Aside from the fact that I thought it would be a good idea to warn them ahead of time before they went to lunch that these would be our topics when they returned to class and I had several boys running down the hall to lunch screaming, “BOOBIES!” That was my bad.

The lessons that we’ve been doing are primarily cheesy animated videos (though very good quality, informative, inclusive, etc.) and then links to different reading materials that I either read to them, tell them to read then, or tell them to go back later and read if they feel it’s important to them.

Read on to see how the “pregnancy options” section went and get a 7th grader’s astoundingly informed and mature take on the abortion ban.

Under the “pregnancy options” section, they explained that if you find out you are pregnant, you have three options: parent, adoption, or abortion. (We’re getting to contraception and protection next week which seems a little out of order, but I didn’t design the lessons.) They thoroughly explained all three options in an informative and nonbiased way. We got through it with virtually no drama or outbursts aside from the kid in the back of the room who I heard whisper to a friend, “But you’re still killing someone!” (I confess I just let that go because this is the same kid who asked to step outside and looked physically ill when we were discussing sexual orientations and gender identity on Monday. I’ve met his parents. I wasn’t about to win any debates with him.)

Then we went to the gym for the rest of our PE period when we were done with our lessons. There’s this one girl in my class who’s kind of a nightmare. An awful attitude, always causing drama, rarely listens to a word I say, just overall kind of unpleasant. She has a friend in the other class who is very similar to her and who snuck over to our PE class today. I somehow didn’t register she wasn’t supposed to be there and I was sitting right next to them while they were talking. The girl from my class suddenly said to the other girl, “I’m not really sure why they’re telling us abortions are an option when they’re trying to make them illegal.” Her friend said something like, “Well the governor thinks they’re just so great and some people are just getting abortions for fun.” After I very quickly told her both of those things were very inaccurate, the girl from my class took over and went OFF on her. I’ve never heard a 7th grader speak so passionately about such a serious topic. She knew the facts, she explained them clearly and accurately, and she made sure her friend understood every word. She explained that it’s not about whether or not you think abortions are okay. It’s about a woman having the right to do whatever she wants with her own body. “If a woman gets ***** and gets pregnant, should she have to be pregnant and give birth to the baby? And what if she gets pregnant accidentally, but she can’t take care of the kid and is forced to have it? Then she treats the kid like shit because she didn’t even want it. The kid doesn’t deserve that and then both of them are miserable.” She was explaining to her friend that there are states where they want to send women to jail if they have a miscarriage. She said, “That’s what they want to do and it’s not even her fucking fault if she has a fucking miscarriage and it’s so fucking stupid.” And because I’m always on her about her language, she then very heatedly said, “And sorry for my language!” To which I replied, “Oh no. It’s fine. Keep going.” (It was a real bonding moment for us.) She concluded this all with, “Why the fuck do these old white men get to decide what women do with their bodies?!” I asked her how she was so knowledgable about all this and she told me that it’s very important to her that she understands her rights and that this is about basic human decency. I have such a newfound respect for this kid and suddenly she just might be one of my favorites. I told her I was really impressed by her and she said, “Why does a fucking 7th grader understand this better than a bunch of 70 year old white men?!”

I wish I had an answer for her.

It goes on to delineate what they're going to do to the warlock and how systematic it is and we are at war with the max and we had it had to hit a few areas and they're claiming it was us and we mentioned treaties and all sorts of things and they said so what and we said so what will hit you and they said so what will hit you back in the fall and I said your places were destroyed easily by amateurs we need you to take it back and they said no so they'll probably get hit again pretty good too and the stuff is not as strong as they say it is there's a few more things happening but this is very big so we're going to publish and our son said these things to them because they're dragging everybody into a war with themselves and we have this huge war going on with the clones and they're unreasonable and what they're saying is going to destroy them and yeah I guess we're going to end up taking the helm of the foreigners don't and they say they will because the max aren't going to make it they're going to destroy their own forward guard and that's what they're going to do

Ok, I’ll admit I’ve been home a lot lately between all we have going on. I’m not saying I've gone full blown agraphobic just yet (fear of crowds), but if I have an internet connection, a phone and a physical address, seems like most people and things I want to see wind up at my door. My girlfriend said the other day, “We’re going to Walmart” and I was like “Uh, why...when they deliver right to the front door?” and she said, “Because we need to get out of the house and go for a ride. And we’re going to stop at Subway sandwich shop and order their salads, go to the car wash, maybe even the Dollar Tree store and browse if we don’t run out of time.” I looked at her like I saw a ghost, “What’s next a rave? Sounds like you better pack my overnight bag!” We both fought back laughter through wide smiles. When’s the last time YOU got out of the house? Went to some sort of festival or gathering? How about a drive in the country or by the sea? The forrest? A park? Any opportunity to get grounded in nature, de-stress and becoming more heart-centered can redirect your energy and your life.

2. Witches Are Meant To Burn: Magic

There are many mysteries about this site, many of them fall into my field but you don't want me rambling about it. Back to the point, the “witches are meant to burn” saying was written several times (I touched them back then, they were hot enough to cause pain), and along with them there were prayers and other sentences meaning mostly two things: fate and sorrow (so the witch saying fits well in there even when they are centuries of context and history apart from each other.) I need to emphasize that the saying was written in the same way we use it today, even with the dates so far apart. Maybe back then they still had the context though.

If I could meet whoever wrote that on these walls and ask them what a witch is, they would most likely look at me as if I’m an idiot, after all, who wouldn’t know such common sense? (or at least I believe it was common sense since the continent being so large didn’t stop the saying from being said all over it). Ah, the riches I would pay to walk around the continent so far back and watch with my own two eyes what I can only speculate about!

Other academics (and common people) had the same opinion as if this single subject killed the insatiable curiosity of humanity. Even my own students don’t seem interested in it, only the older ones. It looks like if I force them to hear about it almost every day for years they come to either hate the subject or be curious about it. Anyway, this seemingly instinctive disinterest in this word is odd, in an irrational way.

Magic has two main divisions: ‘hands of fate’ and ‘hands of god’

Hands of god are what people truly think of when the word magic comes up, the ability to control the present and the future. If hands of fate set everything in stone, hands of god break the rocks and write a new, ever-changing, history. This is where recipes of foods meant to make one live forever, chantings to attract luck, and everything that humans can actively make is. Contrary to the passive point of view of hands of fate.

Witches are meant to burn, whether they want it or not.

Well, that’s enough crash course on magic, I’ll just finish it with an academic joke brought upon us by the coincidences of life. As I said, the hands of fate carve the destiny in stone and the hands of god break the rocks. That cave — as highly agreed upon— meant to represent the ‘hands of fate’ so isn’t it such a funny thing that it was brought to light by erosion? If magic was real, the ones who practiced it would be proud of themselves.

In the following series of posts, number yet undetermined, I... * Explain what LSD (or Psilocybin) really does. * Contemplate on the similarity of affects shared between particular mental disorders and psychedelics. * Show you how you've kind of been on drugs/mind altering substances your whole life. * And surely more.

I think that if it was commonly understood in our society that mere micrograms can change the whole world then the world would be changed indeed. So much so that perhaps Tumblr wouldn't even exist and I wouldn't be talking here. Perhaps even the internet as we know it wouldn't exist.

If the understanding would transpire today? That's anyone's guess. The most authentic understanding comes through first hand experience. What would happen, then, if everyone was suddenly dosed acid right in this moment? I suspect it'd be nothing short of a world wide apocalypse in all ways. This word 'apocalypse', its original meaning translates to a manner of unveiling. Revelation. This definition has been lost to the confusion of contemporary attitudes and is almost always used in reference to the end of the world. I figure this is due to, a little ironically, the Book of Revelations from the Biblical canon.

Why both meanings of this word, then? For me, it'd 'simply' be another night of revelation for me if I were to be left to my own devices. There is absolutely nothing simple when it comes to LSD, though, and honestly I feel like it deserves a nickname because of that aspect of it. Commander Complexity sounds cool. Shorten it to Complex or something. Anyways...

In this wholly non-technical but effectively accurate diagram we see what a "normal train of thought" would roughly look like. Like an actual train, it's usually a straight track it traverses. At most deviance - still in the scope of normalcy - it's mildly curved. I cannot give you an example of how your thoughts are connected and how they associate with one another because everyone's headspace is unique. Even me, rubber band ball brain and all, I have my own default associations. The topic of music comes up, of course I'll first think of my favorite genres. Someone calls me, their caller ID summons the mental image of that person's appearance. Though the parts in my brain for recognizing language and the memory of someone's face are surely not at all adjacent and millions of neurons is what separates these two compartments, the memories of all those said neurons do not come into my consciousness when my eyes see a name on my phone and I imagine the person's face. These two things in my brain are seemingly disparate in almost every sense of the word, especially since all the connections that this one connection touches do not consciously register even while that flicker of electricity darts across so, so many neurons and dendrites. Clearly, though -- the memory of the language we use and the memory of my friend are very much connected.

I was tempted to use a picture of melted goo instead but it wouldn't have worked with the prior image. If someone ever tells you that acid melts your brain, though? They're right, in a metaphorical sense. The funny part is that you have to take enough of it in order to agree with those kinds of people. But let's finish with the train of thought comparisons. Again, we have a non-technical but effectively accurate representation of what happens in the brain, in the context of where trains of thought go, whilst under the influence of LSD. In a word: everywhere. This might sound like nothing but a bad thing at first, but note how your memory functions when "sober" - whatever you think that is for you. More on that later. Your short term moment to moment, perhaps we could call "present term memory", is remembering more than the exact Now that you are in. When this function of the present term memory fails, this is what we refer to as "losing one's train of thought", or at least "forgetting where you were going with that". This doesn't really happen to me/one when under a particular threshold of dose. If it happens any more frequently than it does otherwise in raw quantity and frequency, then the ratio of Lost Trains:Accounted For Trains is still very impressive. Your mind is much more active with this substance. You have many more trains. I find that I/one still has the same percentage of trains accounted for when under this threshold. (What that particular threshold is for me, I'd quite like to know, however for reasons unrelated is it very difficult to determine that) The trains themselves, though, are making many more stops as well. No matter how many stops there are, though, it's no more difficult to remember them all. So...that's all nice and well. Good to know, you think, or maybe bad to know, you think, if you have the rarefied wherewithal to withstand reading a post you disagree with. Wait, tolerating someone else's differing perspective and not throwing a fit in 2022? Madness, you mongrel! But we have to unpack the profound ramifications of a more philosophical bend before we really start to see why this is so fascinating to me and I hope is to you as well.

However, in spite of how collegiate level essay sounding my tone of text is at times, this is still a blog! Soooo I've had something a bit more personal on my mind concerning all of this as of late. It's not even the truly fascinating part to me. Maybe not, anyways. It's most definitely informed my perspective on what I think is the actual profound part; could it just be a projection, then? Who knows? I digress. I've alluded to it in prior posts, or perhaps said it outright? The healthcare system of America...for what it's worth...has diagnosed me with Schizoaffective Bipolar. This diagnosis did actually have some worth to me, though just about only the diagnosis itself was worth anything. The realm of conventional psychology, especially if embedded in the conventional healthcare system of America, is an institution for troubleshooting cogs in The Machine. Behavior and ways of thinking that impede one's ability to produce capital are identified as exactly that and the ultimate objective is fixing that. Of course, this isn't to say that any random counselor is consciously hoping you'd finally just shut the fuck up and go work a 9 to 5. I'm willing to bet, though, it's quite deeply programmed into their psyche that Human Beings must "earn a living" because the monstrous society we have today is a product of exactly that programming. The DSM is most certainly built on the same programming. Put the two together and it's just not exactly the recipe you're looking for when you're someone like me. Still, I'd even bothered with a diagnosis and a couple months of counseling at all because I'd been at quite a low point. It was a starting point, but my schizo ass went - shall we say - off track almost immediately. It was the studying of the actual science and pathology behind my idiosyncratic way of thinking and mood swings that gave me the true assistance. Sure, I'm no doctor, (although my favorite doctor - Doctor Jordan Peterson - has went on record saying he's tripped balls multiple times. why not imitate greatness?) but here's a fantastic tip for learning about anything: surround yourself in the literature, actively pursue whatever angles you can already understand, and then let your expanding salience on the topic guide you to higher angles of understanding. And the big thing about all this is that I realized I've effectively (though a lesser effect) been living with an acid brain for years before I even became intimate with acid. I imagine this would have started coinciding with the advent of my condition...because the condition is that...but I had multiple truly things wrong with me around the time of this onset and so it's hard to give any time frame with much certainty.

But this is where I now abruptly brake this train of thought and then break it over my knee. Consciously and knowing exactly why.

I was thinking, I could use another image to break up the text and so I hopped on over to Deviantart and searched LSD for a cool picture. The fourth recommended artist for this search has my middle initial and surname as their screen name, and their profile picture is a brain. This isn't the A.Igorithm fucking with me - that profile doesn't even have any art related to LSD and it shows up as a relevant profile on multiple devices. A powerful reminder that, yes, I don't care what the DSM has to say about it, the universe is talking to me. Maybe I should have been happy to admit that earlier. Maybe as early as two days after Fly Free, as it was in that day where I spotted a tattoo of a butterfly on someone I hadn't seen in a very long time, just like how I hadn't seen monarch butterflies in a very long time. Someone who was a great reminder of Hell; I had nothing against her at all however she was my first trainer for my first job back in the day and it was the worst kind of job that I never want to go back to (fast food). She had a little girl with her as well. Sweetest thing she is and I'm not even a kid person, but of course she was the sweetest thing because her name is Heaven and the butterfly woman even said she was a little slice of Heaven. ...I really need to eat and sleep on this.
