In Search of Yamoshi
Tumblr media
So I got this response to my liveblog of DBS Episode 37, where I floated the idea that the Saiyans of Universe 6 represent a scenario where the “good” Saiyans defeated the “evil” Saiyans in ancient times.  And because of that outcome, there were never any Super Saiyans in Universe 6, because their version of Yamoshi never became a martyr and never inspired the legends of Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan God.
My (fuzzy) understanding of this business was that Toriyama identified the original Super Saiyan God as a Saiyan named “Yamoshi”, and stated that Yamoshi also became the first Super Saiyan as well.  I thought there was something about how his spirit haunts the Saiyan race, causing other Saiyans to go Super Saiyan every thousand years.   My point was that none of this must have happened in Universe 6, since Cabba has never heard of Super Saiyans until he sees Goku and Vegeta use the form.
To this, @iamthenight2001 replied: “You’ve got the Yamoshi thing backward - he never went God himself, he just went Super Saiyan after his five comrades died, then his spirit is what triggers the God transformation when the ritual is used.”
Tumblr media
And at first glance, this seemed... wrong?  But there’s so many different interpretations of the Yamoshi concept that I wanted to do some fact-checking before I responded.  And there’s a lot of primary sources to look at, since there were three different versions of the Battle of Gods story, plus the interview where Toriyama described Yamoshi.  So it seemed like this would be a good reason to just put everything together in one post for easy comparison.  Let’s see if we can get to the bottom of this.
1. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (2013)
Let’s start with the movie, which introduced the Super Saiyan God as a concept.  I feel like I’ve gone over the plot of this thing a dozen times, but the short version is that Beerus has a premonition of a worthy opponent called a “Super Saiyan God”, and he spends the whole movie trying to find one, or provoke Goku or Vegeta into becoming one.  Instead, Goku uses the Dragon Balls to ask Shenron for more information, and Shenron explains that the SSG is a transformation achieved through a ritual.
Tumblr media
In the movie, Shenron says:
"A Super Saiyan God is a savior, created by chance by a handful of righteous Saiyans, who long ago questioned the evil acts of their fellow Saiyans, and led a revolt against them.  This savior had immense power, and dispatched the evil Saiyans in no time at all, but shortly thereafter, they returned to normal, with their power apparently used up.
"Once again, Planet Vegeta became a world of evil Saiyans, and the savior was also eliminated from their legends.  This vanished legend goes... "'five Saiyans who possess righteous hearts join hands, and by instilling light into another righteous Saiyan, they will become a Saiyan god.'"
------------------------------------
2. Dragon Ball Super Episode 9 (2015)
Tumblr media
This is just a retelling of the movie scene, but in this version Shenron doesn’t go into nearly as much detail.  He only explains how to make a Super Saiyan God, without discussing the tale of the Saiyan who first used the ritual.
“The Namekian Book of Legends states the following: ‘When five Saiyans of righteous hearts join hands and pour their spirits into another righteous Saiyan, he shall become the God of Saiyans.’  In other words, a Super Saiyan God.”
-----------------------------------
3. Dragon Ball Super manga, chapter 4 (2015)
Tumblr media
Nothing much here, as this scene only gets one panel.  Shenron explains what a Super Saiyan God is and how to make one, but that’s it.
------------------------------------------------
4. Akira Toriyama Interview, Saikyō Jump, January 2018 issue (December 1, 2017)
In this interview, Toriyama answers various questions about the Saiyans.  You can read the whole thing by clicking the link above, but I want to focus on the parts about Super Saiyans and the Super Saiyan God.
Q: Can anyone become a Super Saiyan if they train?
A: It’s not like anyone can become a Super Saiyan through training and anger. In order to become a Super Saiyan, one’s body must contain something called “S-Cells”. Once these S-Cells reach a certain amount, a trigger such as anger will explosively increase the S-Cells and cause a change in the body; that’s Super Saiyan. Most Saiyans have some S-Cells, although not a great quantity. The reason why Goku and Vegeta’s children can become Super Saiyan relatively easily is probably because to a certain extent they inherited a lot of S-Cells, and also because Earth’s environment is gentler and easier to live in than Planet Vegeta.
Q: And how does one increase S-Cells to become Super Saiyan?
A: Having a gentle spirit is the best way to greatly increase one’s S-Cells, but most Saiyans have trouble with this, which I think is why no Super Saiyans appeared for such a long time that they became the stuff of legend. However, one can’t reach the quantity necessary for becoming a Super Saiyan simply by having a gentle spirit, so a certain amount of battle power is indeed necessary. Looked at in this light, it’s easy to see why becoming a Super Saiyan came easy for Goku.
Q: Was the “legendary Super Saiyan” Freeza feared the Super Saiyan God that appeared in Battle of Gods?
A: In a certain sense, they are the same person. That is to say, very long ago, before Planet Vegeta was the Saiyans’ planet, there was a man named Yamoshi who had a righteous heart despite being a Saiyan. He and his five comrades started a rebellion, but he was cornered by combatants and became a Super Saiyan for the first time, though his transformation and fearsome fighting style shocked the other Saiyans. Outnumbered, Yamoshi eventually wore himself out and was defeated, but this was only the beginning of his legend. Afterwards, Yamoshi’s spirit wandered in continuous search of six righteous-hearted Saiyans, seeking a new savior: Super Saiyan God.
--------------------------------------------------------
So the 2017 interview is probably what iamthenight2001 was referring to.   According to Toriyama’s response here, Yamoshi was a Super Saiyan (though not explicitly the first), who fought evil Saiyans but was defeated.  His spirit searches for six righteous Saiyans presumably because that would resemble his own team of six rebels.  I guess the implication is that when he finds six righteous Saiyans, he “blesses” them by allowing one of their number to become a Super Saiyan God.
But that doesn’t fit with what Shenron said in the movie.  Let’s go over that part again.
“A Super Saiyan God is a savior, created by chance by a handful of righteous Saiyans, who long ago questioned the evil acts of their fellow Saiyans, and led a revolt against them.  This savior had immense power, and dispatched the evil Saiyans in no time at all, but shortly thereafter, they returned to normal, with their power apparently used up.”
Shenron speaks of the Righteous Six as having created their own savior by chance.  The implication is that they invented the ritual, and turned their leader, Yamoshi, into a Super Saiyan God.  And Yamoshi made good use of the new power, but then reverted to normal, which is what happens to Goku in the movie.
I don’t object to Yamoshi being both a Super Saiyan and a Super Saiyan God.  It actually makes a lot of sense that he was a Super Saiyan first.  He must have needed more power than he could muster in that form, which lead him to discovering the ritual.   And it also explains the name.  If Yamoshi had already made a name for himself as a Super Saiyan, then what would they call his even stronger form?  “Super Saiyan God” fits the bill.
But I can’t buy into Yamoshi just being an ancient Super Saiyan who merely inspired the ritual.  The problem is that this doesn’t add up, because it means some other band of righteous Saiyans would have to discover the ritual and make a Super Saiyan God for the first time.  Which wouldn’t be a big deal, except that’s not what Shenron said in the movie.  He said a Super Saiyan God was a savior created by six righteous Saiyans who rebelled against evil.  And after their savior was defeated, the evil Saiyans flourished and suppressed the tale.  No one else would have come along later to invent the ritual.  And even if there had been a group like that, then Shenron would have said so, because he was explaining how the ritual originated.  He would have talked about that group, instead of the group who inspired them.
I don’t want to disrespect Toriyama or the people who translated the interview, but his answer just doesn’t gel with the dialogue in the film, which presumably was also supplied by Toriyama.  This would be like Herman Melville doing an interview where he says Moby Dick is a giant squid.  It’s not about whether he’s right or wrong, it’s about the fact that he wrote a whole book that states that Moby Dick is a whale. Past a point, not even the author can contradict the text.
Nonetheless, I’ll admit that this is all open to fan interpretation.  The way I see it, the guy doesn’t have to be named Yamoshi.  Until they actually put the character in a comic or animation, he’s just a name Toriyama made up on the spot.  But it’s handy to have something to call the guy.
And if you like the version in the interview better, I can’t fault you for that.  Maybe Shenron got the details mixed up.  It’s an ancient, forgotten story, and just because Shenron knows the story doesn’t mean the version he knows is completely accurate, or even literal.
I guess I just made up the part where I thought Yamoshi’s ghost communes with Legendary Super Saiyans.  That sounds like somethng I would have come up with, honestly, but I was pretty sure I read that in the interview.  Oh well.
And of course, the Dragon Ball Wiki has thoroughly convinced itself that Yamoshi is the Golden Ape Vegeta imagined in Dragon Ball Z Episode 66.  I wouldn’t object to this either, except it doesn’t make sense, because that would mean there was only one Super Saiyan before Goku, which means there’s no way for anyone to believe that a new one would arise every thousand years.  But the DB Wiki still lists Yamoshi’s first appearance in the anime as DBZ Episode 66.   Well, they can believe what they want to believe.

SHINSEKAI - Magicians of ES: Chapter 4
Location: Tohoku Town (SHINSEKAI) Characters: Mika, Shuu & Natsume
TL Note:
Contrarian investing is an investment style where someone chooses to invest against the prevailing market trend.
< At that time, on the “SHINSEKAI” main street. Limited event “Battle for Quiz Sovereign”. >
Tumblr media
Natsume: “Alright, then question thrEE! Ohh, this is a bonus questiON!”
“What is the hobby of the ES idol and leader of “ALKALOID”, Hiiro AmaGI!?”
Shuu: …………
Natsume: “Hiiro Amagi-kun is still a newbie so the people who know him will knOW, but perhaps you’ve met him a few times already as you’re also a fellow ES idOL, Shuu Nii-san?”
“Or maybe you already know what there is to know about him including his hobBY?”
Shuu: I don’t even know who you are but don’t call me “Shuu Nii-san”, you fake.
Mademoiselle: “Stop chatting with the host and answer, Shuu-kun!”
“If you don’t know, you can ask me! I generally know a thing or two about all the ES idols!”
Shuu: …………
Mika: There’s no use, Mado-nee (fake)~ Onii-chan doesn’t want to be tempted by you, so he’s muted you and can’t hear anythin’ you say, you know?
Mademoiselle: “Then, why did you two buy me!? I’m a paid item! I’m a support character so it shouldn’t be against the rules to listen to my advice!”
Mika: Ngh~ You were bought because of how you looked. That’s only natural since you have the appearance of Onii-chan’s beloved Mademoiselle, though.
But he probably doesn’t like how someone who looks exactly like Mado-nee is usin’ her appearance and controllin’ her that way. That’s why he’s closed his ears and ignorin’ you.
Mademoiselle: “He’s a far more troublesome child than I thought… I don’t understand why he would insist on doing things his own way in that aspect.”
“Without my help, you’ll continue to lose your battles, thus also losing ‘SSG’ and ‘Valkyrie’ will end in ruin.”
Mika: Ahaha, it’s just a game, though? Even if we did lose, there won’t even be a scratch on our real selves.
Mademoiselle: “I wonder if that’s really the case. You’re underestimating VR, you two.”
“Even though the internet is at its current peak, don’t people prefer to live through their online ‘personas’ as opposed to their real selves?”
“No, don’t they think of that persona as their real self?”
“The consequences for making mistakes on the internet and in VR can at times weigh heavier than making mistakes in real life, you know?”
Mika: I know what you mean~ We, or more like, Onii-chan tends to start a lot of flame wars online.
But that’s not his fault at all. Everyone else but him is to blame, no?
Mademoiselle: “...? Mika-chan, I understand you want to defend Shuu-kun.”
Mika: That’s not what I mean. Why doesn’t everyone actually take what Onii-chan says seriously? Our goals are different from the other idols.
It’s true he loves winnin’ and doesn’t like losin’, but he’s someone who decides the rules of a battle himself.
So shouldn’t the rest of the world match up with him instead?
Mademoiselle: “Hmph. And here I am, saying that I’ll help you obtain the power you need to achieve those goals.”
“You’re both so clueless. You should have just obediently listened to what the adults tell you to do.”
“That’s the sort of society we wanted to create for you all.”
Shuu: –Going around to different donut shops!
Mademoiselle: “What’s with the sudden outburst!? Do you want to eat donuts, Shuu-kun!?”
Natsume: “Oh, that’s a shaME! Hiiro Amagi-kun’s hobby is collecting silvER!”
Shuu: Hmph, I see. ES is full of idols with personalities that differ from their appearance, so I simply decided to do what people would call contrarian investing[*]
But it’s a stylish and cool hobby just as his appearance suggests.
Natsume: “WeLL, I don’t exactly know what his hobby entails, thouGH?”
“It was simply written as so on his profile from the official ES websiTE, so who knows if he actually wrote that down himseLF!”
Shuu: Information from those sorts of places are full of lies.
No, even if they weren’t exactly lies… The management team of that idol would brazenly put something down that they want the public to believe is true.
From the perspective of someone who personally knows the idol, it would be the joke of the century. Look at Tenshouin and Sena’s pages; they’re depicted as the perfect role models – as saints.
I have a love for impeccable beauty, however, humans are not without cracks, flaws or dirt.
Natsume: “AhaHA. That’s a very cool one-linER, but you’ve buzzed in too quickly three times in a row, so ‘Valkyrie’ is now out of the battLE! You’ll lose the right to answer until the end of tHE ‘Battle for Quiz Sovereign’!”
Shuu: I don’t mind. We only participated in this farce because that fake Mademoiselle said she wanted to show us how useful she could be.
We’re not in a rush to do anything else, so we simply decided to play along.
Mademoiselle: “I never would’ve thought Shuu-kun would mute me, though…”
“How can I be useful to you, then? All I can do is give advice, after all.”
Mika: Mado-nee (fake) sure is patient. Onii-chan is a puppeteer at heart, so he really doesn’t like it when other people try to control him.
Somethin’ horrible happened before 'cause of that so he gets wary when it comes to those sorts of things.
It looks like showin’ up with Mado-nee’s appearance had the exact opposite effect. Oshi-san hates that sort of counterfeit work the most.
Mademoiselle: “...Well, I don’t particularly mind.”
“Actually, it works perfectly for me and it’s exactly what I thought would happen. Shuu-kun wasn’t the one I wanted to approach, anyway.”
“Fufu. It looks like you’re wary of me, so I figured I could lend some basic help and earn some friendship points.”
“But it wasn’t as easy as it seemed. I’m not the type of person who would get even more motivated after encountering some difficulty, you see.”
Mika: I knew it, you’re–

NON-SELF STATE'S IMAGERY 🕉
I put all of these images together to visually convey & explain the symbolism behind KRILLIN'S NON-SELF STATE.
(link to my in-depth essay here).
I did the research so you don't have to! But, feel free to do your own research as well. 👍
NON-SELF STATE'S AURA
Tumblr media
The aura of NSS has visual similarities to both god ki & Ultra Instinct. NSS is a similar power like UI, but on a lower level. It's obviously different from normal mortal ki, and it's definitely not the same as the "ki barrier aura" that Goku & Vegeta used in EP 98. Visually, NSS clearly DOES NOT look like the barrier aura nor function the same way. Saying it does is either being intellectually dishonest or ignorant.
NSS PATH 🕉
Tumblr media
Duḥkha - Krillin's suffering, depression, fear & extreme PTSD.
Eightfold Path/Seven Factors of Awakening - Krillin faces all the trauma at once & has no choice but to overcome his trauma.
Dhyāna & Samādhi - Krillin's deep meditation.
Upekṣā - Krillin achieves equanimity.
Unlocked 7th Chakra/Sahasrāra - Krillin gains spiritual understanding.
Nirvāṇa/Buddhahood - Krillin's Non-Self State.
Buddhism attempts to face the suffering and understand the bondage of suffering with the anattā (non-self) approach or strategy. Accepting the objective reality is the starting point for the practice of the Eightfold Path (the path to nirvāṇa).
The birds🕊🕊, water💧, Super Shenron🐉, & the Paradise Herb 🌿 all represent Krillin's achievement of peace & enlightenment.
WATER SYMBOLISM💧
Tumblr media
Water symbolizes rebirth and purity in many religions. In Buddhism, water symbolizes calmness, serenity, clarity, and cleansing of the body, spirit, & mind. Krillin's energy was spiritually reborn after he cleared his mind & gained equanimity.
The puddle that Krillin stepped in reflected how Krillin doesn't have inner peace. Inside the puddle shows the previous 2 days that attributed more to his self-doubt. At this moment, his internal conflict triggered everything in the forest.
Krillin falling into a river conveys how Krillin was "submerged" in his sufferings. That river then leads to a small waterfall & Krillin ends up in the lowest point of the Forest of Terror (metaphorically, Krillin's lowest point). Soon, Krillin physically rises out of the water, then he spiritually rises above the trauma that clouded his mind. Krillin had truly "risen above himself." This reflects how a lotus flower rising up from murky waters has spiritual significance.
SUPER SHENRON 🐉🐍
Tumblr media
Majority of the fandom thought Super Shenron appearing was random and/or stupid. But, a little bit of research reveals how inspired it was to display a golden dragon.
This scene also displays Krillin's improved mental state. Super Shenron [one of the most powerful entities in the Multiverse] had captured Goku; Krillin's best friend who always saved him. What did Krillin do? Krillin courageously faced Super Shenron & saved his best friend! This revealed that Krillin overcame his own limits, both mentally & physically.
An extra factoid is that during the Universe 6 vs Universe 7 arc, there was a smaller Super Shenron in the core of the giant Super Shenron. This is similar to Anavatapta having a small golden dragon riding on a larger golden dragon.
DBS EP 12 also had dragon symbolism to illustrate that Goku achieved a godly level of power, conveying that he was now in the realm of the gods. Beerus had a purple dragon & SSG Goku had a red dragon.
Tumblr media
LOTUS FLOWER SYMBOLISM
Tumblr media
CLOSED LOTUS FLOWER:
The enclosed island of the Forest of Terror resembles a closed lotus bud above the water. In Buddhism, the newly dead are said to be inside a lotus flower bud and the bud opens once the person inside has achieved nirvāṇa. In like manner, Krillin was able to leave the death-like state of the Forest of Terror after he awakened to nirvāṇa/enlightenment.
The Forest of Terror took inspiration from the Bodhi tree (tree of enlightenment) the tree that Buddha found enlightenment under. This is shown by the way the branches of the trees in the Forest of Terror cover everything & the fact that Krillin attained enlightenment in this forest. In a way, the Forest of Terror soon became a Forest of Enlightenment for Krillin.
LOTUS FLOWER COLORS:
The Paradise Herb has colors of all the chakras (also, every chakra is represented by a different lotus flower that has a varying number of petals).
The 7th chakra 🕉 has a connection to rainbows. We see that the Paradise Herb has rainbow colors. 🌿🌈
RISING UP LIKE A LOTUS FLOWER:
Krillin spiritually rising & physically rising out of the water mimics the lotus flower rising out of the water (literally & symbolically).
SYMBOLS OF ENLIGHTENMENT:
Both the Paradise Herb & the Lotus Flower are used as symbols of enlightenment. Lotus flowers appeared after Buddha gained enlightenment & the Paradise Herbs appeared after Krillin gained enlightenment.
Lotus flower signifies spiritual change. They are closed under the moon & open under the sun. There are 3 moons in the Forest of Terror & Krillin is only able to leave the forest after his spiritual change. The moons aren't seen anymore & the forest opens.
EXTENDED LIFESPAN:
The lotus flowers can survive for 1,000 years or longer & can even be revived. Enlightened ones are also said to be able to live for 1,000 years or become immortal. Similarly, the blessed Paradise Herb greatly increases the lifespan. Roshi says he feels like he can live for 1,000 more years after eating the Paradise Herb. After becoming enlightened, Krillin can now potentially live for thousands of years.
AURA CLAD FISTS:
The Palm Chakras are represented by Krillin's Aura Clad Fists.
HEALING:
Herbs are used for natural healing & the lotus flower stands for escape from spiritual/emotional pain. The Paradise Herb🌿 is good for the spirit and health.
CHAKRA/RAINBOW COLORS 🌈
Tumblr media
The 7th charka has a connection to rainbows. The Paradise Herb, the rocks, trees, dirt, clouds, many things inside the Forest of Terror have rainbow tints and hues to them.
The Sahasrāra represents a divine connection & higher state of conciousness. Its quote is "I understand." Right before Krillin spiritually transforms with Non-Self State, he says "I understand."
The Sahasrāra chakra's colours are violet & white. Krillin gains a godly white aura after achieving Nirvāṇa. The violet butterfly at the end of EP 75 was used to forshadow Krillin's eventual awakening.
During the ToP, there are chakra colors in the sky of the World of Void when Goku awakened to Ultra Instinct. This was done in a similar way how there are chakra colors in the Forest of Terror when Krillin awakened to Non-Self State. Both foreshadowed spiritual awakenings. (Chakra colors were also present in Whis' Staff to convey that Goku & Vegeta tapped into godly power.)
To further illustrate the Sahasrāra chakra, the Forest of Terror had a violet colored aura when Krillin goes into Non-Self State a second time. In a similar way, the World of Void became a violet color when Goku used Mastered Ultra Instinct.
SPIRITUAL CHANGE/TRANSFORMATION
Tumblr media
The moon symbolism references the lotus flower, both signifying spiritual change. The lotus flower is closed under the moon & rises up when the moon is gone. When Krillin spiritually transformed to NSS, the moons weren't shown again. 🌕🌕🌕
Since Baba is a witch, the 3 moons may also be a nod towards the "Triple Moon Goddess." It consists of 1 full moon & 2 cresent moons on the side. - [🌒🌕🌘] Perhaps a double reference? 🤔
ULTRA INSTINCT (UI) & NON-SELF STATE (NSS)
Tumblr media
The Buddhist concept of equanimity is upekṣā, and it matches up with Merus' explanation of how Ultra Instinct is attained. Both Goku & Krillin's forms were achieved in similar ways.
Non-Self State & Ultra Instinct are not exactly the same thing, but as I said in my essay, the two spiritual transformations are very similar & depict a high godly power. (Merged Zamasu also has power depicting spiritual enlightenment.)
Ultra Instinct could be referred to as "Mastery of Movement" & Non-Self State could be referred to as "Mastery of Mind."
Obviously, Goku's spiritual transformation is at a higher level than Krillin's spiritual transformation. Krillin has recently stepped into the realm of the gods & just got a taste of god ki. He doesn't have a godly teacher either, so he still has a long way to go. This is similar to how SSG opened Goku to a new realm of power and made him capable of more than he thought. However, unlike Krillin, Goku later recieved godly training.
WAYS GOD KI HAS BEEN ATTAINED
Tumblr media
The past gods of Earth prior to the nameless Namekian (Kami) & Dende were Earthlings that were granted godly energy. Meaning Krillin isn't the first Earthling to use god ki (but none are known to use god ki to the extent that Krillin has). Earthlings are fully capable of having god ki. God ki IS NOT Saiyan exclusive. As a matter of fact, more Earthlings have used god ki than Saiyans have. There's something for ya to think about.💭
Earthlings have always had spiritual understanding. They don't naturally have as high of a physical limit like other aliens nor do they have a the natural ability to use ki without training like some aliens, but Earthlings do have spiritual understanding & high spiritual capability that helps them cultivate their energy faster than other races. Earthlings make up for their lack of natural strength with skill & Earthlings also have great spiritual understanding of energy. They were one of the few races who learned how to sense energy, knew how to lower/raise their energy, (Goku & Vegeta learned from Earthlings) & increase their power without transforming. Earth has multiple gods that Earthlings can learn from. Specially selected Earthlings have been given the position of god & have been bestowed godly energy many times before.
Since Earthlings have so much spiritual understanding & connection to the gods, god ki could be the true power of Earthlings. After all, Krillin did attain god ki on his own through enlightenment. (The only other race shown to be very spiritual are Namekians, who have a connection to dragon gods. Saiyans aren't very spiritual and only have the god ritual.)
This further cements Toriyama's statements that Krillin holds the title of "The Strongest Earthling!" ✌🌰✌
Also... "Demigod Krillin??" 🤔
NON-SELF STATE [⠿] - AVATAR STATE [⬇] PARALLEL
AFTERWORD 📝
The Earthlings (and non-Saiyan characters) have much more to offer than most of the DB fandom think. This is partially the reason I put this post together. Earth has tons of interesting mystical lore & Earthlings have always had a connection to the gods. That fact is hardly mentioned by most of the fandom as majority choose to overlook it. This fandom as a whole focuses too much on Saiyans and easily miss things that are right in front of them.
For some reason, majority of the DB fandom hate the Earthlings despite they themselves being "Earthlings." But, that's a completely different topic for another time...
Hopefully, this helped y'all better understand Krillin's new power-up!
(If you don't believe any of my research, then I implore you to fact-check me before you dismiss my research just because you dislike Krillin. Otherwise, you're being immature.)
(And no, those episodes ARE NOT non-canon filler. Go learn what filler actually means.)
I also wanted to give a shoutout to the awesome artist that goes by GT's ScrapBook on Twitter, GT's Lab on Tumblr & GT18 on Deviantart. She understood that there was Buddhist symbolism for Krillin's power-up & drew this amazing fanart of Krillin back in 2017! 🔥

I/O:   Mr Svenson, I just need you to initial here again on this form and we can get started. Yes, underneath that. And Michael, if you’d keep this one for your records?
CDC: Yes, I have it here.
I/O: Alright. Mr Sevenson, I know you are not, nor have you ever been military, so if this seems strange to you… when there is a rescue in a combat zone carried out by the military, especially considering the nature of the work you have done for the region and it’s political ramifications—
CAS: I understand, Sir.
I/o: Okay. Good. Thats good. There are certain aspects of your case that the US military has an ongoing interest in. Involvement, rather. One of them being your own experiences of course, and the other being the continued captivity of Samir Adane.
Now wait, before you say anything, I know you have given a statement already, and Michael, you have been made aware of all previous statements your client has made since rescue, correct?
CDC: I have.
I/O: Excellent. Mr Svenson....Charles, I know you have already stated you and Samir were not together for some time in your ordeal.
CAS: I haven’t seen Samir in two years.
I/O: I'm aware of that. This is an ongoing collection of statements and information that help us form a big-picture narrative. We are, as I’m sure you know, flying blind 90 percent of the time over there.
This is as informal as it gets with us. I’d like you to be able to relax.
CDC: Would you like something to drink?
I/O: Absolutely, stop us anytime and ask.
CAS: May I smoke?
I/O: You may.

I/O: So let’s start after the point of separation. You’ve said you and Samir were separated fairly early on.
CAS: Right. Couple of weeks in, maybe.
I/O: Right, that’s incredibly early. Are you willing to tell us what happened to you after that point? You’re encouraged to include any and all details you recall.
And human memory is flawed, and I don’t expect yours to be perfect- absolutely no one I talk to has perfect recall on something like this, over this scope of time. But anything helps us paint this bigger picture here.
Also, you don’t have to talk about Samir. I know you're aware of the allegations the press have been making. Of the word traitor being tossed about. You are not here today to denounce or defend him. This is about your ordeal and yours alone.
CAS: Yeah. [audible sigh] Alright, so. A few weeks in. The guys who kidnapped us off the road need money, they want free passage through some city. It’s held by a network, some bigwig families and a handful of mercenaries. The white coats. So… being the journalist, I guess they figure I’m the more valuable prisoner, and they trade me to gain access to this city. I think money changed hands.
I/O: They sold you.
CAS: They traded me, essentially. So... Okay. I don’t know if you want me to explain how this network works or not.
I/O: You can explain as much as you’d like for your own story, to place it in greater context. Walk us through it.
CAS: Right. Just for clarity, I knew all this information before, from my work in the area in 2009… there’s two families that received a sort of de facto control over the northern regions after the nuclear reactor explosion and the subsequent coup. Old military families, the Winters and Louviers . They don't always see eye to eye. The Winters work with our military forces now and then. They take bribes, they give bribes. Any means to an end. On the other hand, the Louviers are more of a… paramilitary sort of group. Very clear cut ideals.
I/O: Extremists.
CAS: The word purist does come to mind. It can be very 'Quakers' meeting' at times. For comparison. Anyway, it was them I was first given to. The Louviers. By Achille, and his soldiers.
They drove me out into the countryside… to this big mountain. We drove to the end of the access road and there was a gate we went around and had to continue on foot because the road was all washed out. It was really rough gravel, winding all over the place like an old deer path. I was blindfolded, by the way, this is why it’s sort of vague, but that was what I could glean from what I could hear and feel. That was the first place they kept me. The mountain location.
I/O: And how long would you say that lasted?
CAS: Three, four months?  I don’t know.
I/O: That’s fine. That’s good. And this was a… like a fortress? A jail?
CAS: Oh, no. This was a house. It was somebody’s house.
I/O: Okay.
CAS: Yeah. These… these people aren’t like the insurgents we were with before, you know. Not just groups of men on foot and in the backs of trucks. These are actually… families. Like entire extended families that make up this sort of network. There’s a hierarchy, sure. Like the mob or whatever. Organized crime. But this was just somebody’s house.
I/O: And they kept you…
CAS: In a room. A pretty small room. It smelled like mildew. Like a basement. And it might have been subterranean… the house was sort of built into the mountain, and there was never any light in that room. It was dark that whole time, unless someone came in there with me.
And then the light as so bright I couldn’t see for ten minutes, it hurt to even open my eyes. It was one of those big halogen worklights on a tripod, like for a construction site. That was the only light they had in there. So I’d be trying to see who it was— you know, because it might be one of the women or girls, and that meant maybe food, or water, if it was a good day. Or it could be one of the guys, the men. And that wasn’t what you wanted.
I/O: Did they hurt you?
CAS: Sure. Yeah.
I/O: Are you willing to talk to us about that?
CAS: [audible deep breath]. Uhm. The older guy… he was a little older than I am, maybe in his forties… he seemed to be the dad, or the patriarch or what have you. The younger men.. I assume were his sons, but I don’t know. Without Samir, I no longer had a translator.
They were pretty interested in, you know, hurting me. Not for- not for any information or anything because it was pretty obvious they didn’t speak a lick of English and vice versa. It was just for fun. Or, vengeance, or what have you.
I/O: Do you think they knew who you were?
CAS: You mean a journalist? No. I think they thought I was military. That’s the impression I got. They hung me up by...by my wrists, the first night, and they were yelling at me, and of course I couldn’t understand a word. I’m, you know I’m shaking like a leaf, and I keep saying hello and friend over and over like an idiot, the only words I know. And they were not receptive to that. They were not into that.
They took this bit of black cord like a cable, and they’d walk behind me and all around me, and swing it like a lasso, to build up anticipation. And eventually they’d whack me with it. And I know that sounds minimal, but the end of that cable had a metal fixture, and it was like a whip. I could hardly keep from crying out every time. Eventually I did, I just screamed when it hit me. I didn't care. I couldn't help it.
[cough, pause]
Uhm. They hit the backs of my calves, the tops of my thighs. They’d sort of fake me out, you know, pretend they were going to hit me in the genitals with it, or up by my face like they were aiming for my eye.
And the way they had my hands tied, they used a rope slung up over a beam, I had to stay on my tiptoes the whole time or my whole body weight would come down on my wrists. And when they’d hit me with that thing, I’d twist away and they would get a real kick out of that. One would stand off a ways and smoke a cigarette and watch, and then they’d trade off after a while.
I/O: And roughly how long did this go on for?
CAS: Oh, all night.
I/O: Mhm.
CAS: Eventually they got tired and went to bed. And they turned the light out, in the room, so it was pitch black. And they left me just hanging there. On my tiptoes. I had no sense of time other than when they opened the door. Then I could get a glimpse of what the light was doing, make a guess on whether it was morning light or late afternoon I was seeing out there. Not that it matttered.
And... I’m not gonna lie to you, I was not taking this well. I was at the end of my...my literal and metaphorical rope by the time they came back in that room, however many hours later.
[long pause]
There’s no crying ‘uncle’ in that situation. You can’t say anything to these people to make them stop. You can’t even communicate with them, so you can’t beg, or make a convincing argument. You’re like an animal. That sort of helplessness is... its not... I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy, to use the old cliche. I'll put it that way.
[clears throat]
Sorry. So, anyway, uhm. The complete pitch darkness was playing mind games with me. With my eyes. My hands were numb, my arms were numb, my shoulders were on fucking fire, excuse my French. I hurt all over my body from the cable. I was really thirsty, too, from the walk up the side of the mountain. I think the thirst… Well, I won’t say it’s worse than pain. But it’s got a real maddening quality.
And I was—  if I had any information I could have given them, I would’ve. Gladly. I was wishing I had something useful to tell them or that they wanted from me. Just to end it. To be let down from there.
I/O: And this is just the first night.
CAS: Oh yeah. The first twenty-four hours. So, be glad I’m not an Officer or something, I guess.
[soft laughter]
CAS: They left me so long I eventually relieved myself. Didn’t want to, oviously. Had to. And they were not happy I had urinated all over their floor. Don’t have to speak the language to get the picture on that one.
I/O: Were you punished for that?
CAS: Pretty much for the rest of the time I was there. They acted like I was absolutely filthy. Which eventually, I was, because they didn’t wash me. I think that incident was the rationale behind not giving me much water. For the rest of those three months or however long it was in that house.
I/O: None of the family members gave you water?
CAS: They did. I mean eventually, obviously, or I would’ve died. But it was just enough to keep me alive. I was always thirsty. I remember that very clearly. My mind would begin to wander just a little bit… to my daughters, or just...memories, you know, errant thought, and then it would snap back to the thirst, like a rubber band. It’s so maddening, I think, because you can’t stop thinking about it. You are no longer just thirsty. You sort of become thirst.
I/O: You mentioned women came in sometimes. Did you receive better treatment from them?
CAS: Not really, no. I know, I think people are surprised by that. I mean these women are oftentimes just as involved as their male counterparts in the politics, or the day-to-day of the organized crime. They really are. I don’t think they thought too kindly of me
I/O: Yes. They're progressive, in that way.
CAS: Well. If that's an appropriate use of the word, then sure, if you squint past the other stuff. The girls, though. The little girls were sweet. They made me think of my girls. My daughters.
I/O: They let you interact with their children?
CAS: I mean, I was tied to a bedframe. I couldn’t lift my head without help. They’d send them in to give me water or food. They were nine or ten, maybe. They were curious, they’d get giggly when I’d choke on water or something, they thought that was pretty funny. They were still innocent of the sorts of biases their big sisters and mothers had against me. Not that I blame them. We really turned a blind eye when that nuclear reactor melted down. I’m sure you know all about it. It was not our finest hour. It almost never is, is it?
I/O: ...Did any of them physically abuse you? The women?
CAS: You mean other than withholding food and water? [huffs] Uh, once. Yeah. There was a woman with dark hair and these really, really blue eyes. She had a knife. It’s funny, it was one of those redneck foldout knives you see at gas stations off the interstate, or flea markets. It’s got this deer on it, this big old buck, transposed over an American flag. Old faithful, blowin’ in the wind.
I/O: Huh.
CAS: Oh yeah. [laughs] Said Made in USA on the handle. She was good with that thing, I’ll give her that. I wasn’t immune to the irony at the time, either.
I/O: I assume you mean she used it to cut you.
CAS: Yes. Sorry. She’d come in when the men weren’t around and straddle me. I’m spread eagle on this bed 24/7, at this point, or, more of a wire bedframe actually, there was no mattress or box spring. She’d take off my blindfold… I had sores all around my eyes from the sweat all day underneath that thing... And she’d leave little nicks all over me with that knife, sometimes for a half hour at a time.
She was the only one who didn’t talk to me, even though they all knew I couldn’t understand their language. She’d just watch me. She’d find a spot that really hurt, that she could use to get me to squirm, and she’d abuse it. Or if I made a noise, that really made her happy.
I/O: Was this sexual?
CAS: I don’t know. [click of lighter] Cartainly not for me.
I/O: I want to ask you more details about your time here, and move on to when you were moved from that location. But I think we should take a little break, stretch our legs. Does that sound agreeable to you?
CAS: Yes, Sir.
I/O: Michael?
CDC: It does, Sir.
I/O: Alright, fifteen minute break. Thank you, gentlemen.

Game Impressions from PAX Aus 2019
Tumblr media
Wake the fuck up, samurai. We've got a city to burn.
Every year I go to PAX Aus with some close friends to check out the Incredible Future of Games that everyone else already checked out six months ago, along with some cool weird indie shit and some awesome retro stuff. And every year, I write a little diary of what I saw to share my impressions with my friends. This is that diary.
Doom Eternal
Okay, let's get this out of the way. I played Doom Eternal pretty much as soon as I got on the show floor. It may shock you to know that it is, in fact, good.
Tumblr media
No pictures of the demo units, sorry, so have this big logo.
The demo started with a little grey-box tutorial map just to teach you what you need to know for the demo level, since it was taken from the middle of the game. It looked very Snapmap-y and had some Doom 2 MIDI music playing. After that we were given about 25 minutes to acquaint ourselves with the lengthy "Mars Core" mission they've been showing since E3. I was at the start of the first arena of the hell bit when I ran out of time. :(
Here are some scattered thoughts from playing:
Your standard running around and double jumping feels much the same as in Doom 2016. The dashing feels great, although I think it might reduce your air control a little afterwards as I had some trouble overshooting a platform in the floating debris bit.
Climbing walls felt a bit weird to me. You have to press E on the wall manually to grab onto it, which feels a bit unintuitive when you're plummeting past it. Also feels a bit odd considering mantling up walls is automatic. You can auto-grab onto walls if you dash into it, but I think it's only for the first bit of the dash? Maybe I'm just bad at videogames.
I think the Combat and Super Shotguns now use different ammo types? I could have swore there were situations where I could select the Combat Shotgun but not the SSG.
The Chainsaw now no longer has even the slightest pretence of being a "real" weapon. It's now just a swing animation when you press the button, like a melee attack, before bringing your weapon back up.
When you have the SSG's Meat Hook attachment, a little meathook icon appears below the crosshair. When you're close enough to an enemy to grapple onto them, the icon floats over them, indicating that it has some kind of auto-aim mechanic to reduce frustration.
There was a monster with swords on its arms that acted an awful lot like the Baron of Hell (might have been the Hell Knight, looking at the Quakecon footage of the same fight) but it looked quite different. Looked fuckin' cool, whatever it was.
The platforming but in the debris section with the giant floating red barrels was actually kind of frustrating. It wasn't always clear where you needed to go, and the climbable bits tended to blend in with the rest of the world. Then again, keep in mind I have a frankly abysmal sense of direction. Thankfully falling into the void just whacks you for a paltry five health and teleports you back onto safe ground.
The locational damage stuff is really fun. Breaking a monster's guns has a satisfying metal "PING" sound to it to inform you that the dude got fucked up and is weaker now, and that you should keep doing it.
When I picked up one of those "?" secrets, the pop-up box told me that they unlocked "collectable dolls" and "cheat codes". The former is vague, but I suspect they'll be like the mini-Doomguys but of more characters. I'd imagine the latter will be like in Rage 2.
Oh, and it looks a million bucks, too. Though you probably didn't need me to tell you that.
All in all, I'm pretty happy with what I saw and it's even more of a pity it's not coming out next month.
Not Indie Games, But Also Not Doom Eternal
Tumblr media
The Vive Cosmos felt really comfy - the lack of cabling and the decent display resolution made it feel a lot more natural than the Gen 1 Vives I've previously used. The game they were using to demo (Audica), however, was pretty lame. A rhythm-target shooter that didn't really take advantage of the medium at all.
Bleeding Edge was not inspiring. It was basically the control point mode from TF2 or Overwatch, except every character was a third-person brawler with little emphasis on projectile weapons beyond the occasional special. It felt like someone making a claim at TF2 or Overwatch's throne several years late while bolting a weak character action game on, which is fairly odd considering how innovative and critically acclaimed Ninja Theory's previous game was.
Dreams is fairly fascinating in its potential. The creation tools weren't available in the demo build so I can’t really judge them, instead there was a choice of eight developer-made experiences ranging from Mario-inspired obstacle courses to videogames as art.
I didn't get the chance to actually play MediEvil, but I watched some folks play it and it basically just looks like the PS1 game with more triangles, with all the slightly wonky 32-bit gameplay that entails.
The demo unit for Monkey King: Hero Is Back had some utterly bizarre graphics settings for some reason that made it look like I was playing a JPEG file, with big whopping compression artifacts surrounding each character. Weird!
Tumblr media
Not happenin’.
Indie Games
Tumblr media
Grabimals is a brilliant local co-op puzzler where players roll around as shapes and link together to solve puzzles like catching a falling water droplet, crossing a gap or casting a shadow that matches an example image. Supposedly it's still a ways off from release, but it's already impressively polished (disregarding one hilarious crash bug we found by accident!)
Hamster Scramble is a really fun take on Puzzle Bobble, with platforming elements, team play and the ability to jump over to your opponent's screen and fuck their plans up directly. It's an absolute blast and didn't feel like it was almost a year away from release.
Fork Knights is a platform fighter with an emphasis on one-hit kills. The character designs are cute, but I can't really say the gameplay itself struck me, to be honest.
Baron is an eight-player single-screen local multiplayer dogfighter. Fairly simple mechanically, but pretty fun all things considered.
Tumblr media
Broken Roads had some lovely hand-painted art assets and some interesting ideas like a literal moral compass, but the demo build showcased was waaaaay too early to be shown off to the public. Of the eight or so areas present in the demo, only two had any characters, interactivity or really anything other than wandering around set up, and the combat side of things was extremely rough and sequestered off to a side area as a "well, if you insist..." kind of deal.
Misadventure In Little Lon is a true-crime adventure game for mobile with a unique mechanic - each "scene" is integrated into the real world via AR, with characters (that resemble Poser models more than a little bit) speaking to you directly. Not sure if it holds up over an entire game, but it's attention-garnering at least.
Speaking of true crime, The Black Window tasks players with using an Oujia board to question Australia's first female serial killer, with responses taken from court records and letters from the time. The well-acted performances of the actual individual in question's words lends it an impressive atmosphere, which the booth added to with a big wooden oujia board type thing you could "type" on. Sort of.
ACID KNIFE is real, real early, but the aesthetic is awesome and the pixel art is great. Hopefully it grows and expands into something special.
Tumblr media
The Vigilante Proclivities of the Longspur is an oldschool Lucasarts-inspired point-and-click adventure with a custom demo scene set at an oddly-familiar videogame convention. Pretty promising so far, but could do with a good bit of polish - I'm pretty sure there was only one sound effect in the entire demo, and dialogue was often lacking in punctuation.
I didn't get to play Hot Brass but I watched over shoulders and talked with the developers, and it looked pretty cool. It's basically a take on SWAT 4's rarely-imitated brand of tactical copwork, but with a Hotline Miami-style top-down perspective, but with all the characters abstracted down to simple board game like tokens - a circle with a coloured outline denoting attitude towards the player, with a weapon icon if armed.
Blood Metal... Blood Metal is not good. It is extensively not good. Development seems to have only started in July, so one can still hope that the bad AI, unsatisfying gunplay, buggy collision detection and complete lack of damage feedback (outside of some ridiculous, sight-obscuring gouts of blood) get fixed over time. The 80s action movie aesthetic and low-poly artstyle forces it to be compared to Maximum Action, which is at least a fun kind of jank...
This Starry Void is a real-time, tile-based 3D dungeon crawler set in an abandoned spacecraft. It seems pretty cool so far, but it could probably use some UI/UX tweaks. The attempts at a "graphic novel inspired" visual style for the environments could probably benefit from looking at how Void Bastards did things, as well.
Tumblr media
Lethal Lawns and Beam Team are fucking arcade games with massive cabinets. In 2019. Granted, they're also on computers and coming to consoles and stuff as well, but still! They're both pretty simple games, and therefore best played in cabinet form.
Unpacking is a "zen puzzle game" by the developers of Assault Android Cactus about the second-worst part of moving house, unloading an unseen character's packing and getting a glimpse into their lives as a result. I wasn’t able to play it due to an unexpectedly-crowded booth, but the pixel art is quite lovely.
Feather is a chill game about being a bird and flying around an island trying to find its secrets. I tried the Switch port, which played alright but obviously (and understandably) toted a lower framerate than the demo PC.
Topple Pop is a cute puzzle game that blends together elements of Tetris, Puyo Puyo and that one joke game that was Tetris but with a proper physics engine. Looks cute, with a fun gimmick!
Tumblr media
Shooty Skies Overdrive is an VR spinoff of the popular mobile shmup, and basically similar to that one shmup minigame in Valve's The Lab. Weave your plane, which is attached to one of your hands, through incoming bullets and enemies like a toy! The 3D effect on the incoming projectiles looks great, but they can tend to get in the way of the action sometimes.
Dead Static Drive has been at like the last three PAXes and it looks better every time I see it. I hope it comes out this decade.
Snow Mercy is a third-person shooter/strategy thing where you hunt down icecubes to spend on an army of snowmen to crush your opponent's base before they crush yours. Not a common genre combo, reminds me of C&C Renegade a bit.
The Adventure Pals has graphics straight out of mid-2000s Newgrounds and level design out of pretty much any european platformer, but it didn't seem too bad from my brief prodding at it. The player character is perhaps a bit too small for my elderly eyes in Switch portable mode, but that's about as far as my gripes go.

I am actually still uncertain if I should speak up or what since this issue is all gone now but it still is getting out of hand. First of all, I made it clear in my statement that the two parties were both at fault and is getting offensive bc they both have stand on the issue. As a fellow schoolmate and leader, I firmly believe that it is just to get in between since they're both shaming themselves and the name of our beloved school. I had written my view and sent it to their SSG President in an attempt to shake them all up but it turned out they misinterpreted everything I said and took it as if I was just a plain meddler of a children fight. If I'll drop the message here, you'll see my point but it fell out on closed minds. We have no one to blame. It is a notional idea of everyone since it was still fresh and it seemed I was siding the other party when in fact I was symphatizing to both of them. They were being criticized on various group chats so I decided to step up and conduct an action which obviously is a good decision only that they couldn't fathom the real intention. Second, why does it look like they were holding grudge against me when in fact I got nothing to do with them? That, I don't know. It's so not me to clear my name but this is just plain stupid. Lastly, can everybody just stop putting up that fake facade? It's disgusting and you guys know for a fact I am no plastic. I was so disappointed but I completely understand everything. This issue is nonsense and your mindset is trash periodt.

The Ehd-e-wafa post
So I’m watching this drama and it has no community on tumblr so i’m super comfortable sharing my unnecessary thoughts on here!! yay!! anyway, this is basically a bunch of incoherent thought on the characters.
The show centres around 4 high school friends who do not look like highschoolers at all (three of them have perfectly trimmed and grown beards and well made hair and uniforms while they live in a hostel. lol. ya thats totally believable. ispr i freaking trusted you there.) And they have the lamest group name. SSG? Special S Gang????? ISPR I TRUSTED YOU.
There’s Saad, the dude who has mild stalker tendencies and is otherwise largely decent unless brought into a situation packaged with Shazain (aka pls dont do this.) From what I’ve picked on he also probably has mild level daddy issues, and never wants to disappoint the man or his family (a rich military family oh boy). This could explain why he is so drawn to trouble the minute there isn’t a set of eyes on him. The only good set he is a part of so far is with Zoro, the good doggo. They are pure and happy and will die for each other.
Then there is Shazain, the actual piece of shit of the group, is the son of a Punjabi zameendar (land owner) and has faced zero genuine consequences for his actions since forever. this leads him to having more or less no ability to actually calculate or fear the potential risks the group faces. He doesn’t quite understand why anyone else wouldn’t want to do a bad thing (tm) and assumes its because they lack confidence, which is clearly, certainly, not the case. I don’t have any sets for him yet. Will update later.
Next we have Sheheryar, who seems weirdly chill with everything, (oh? the principal is mad? okay. :D). Like, too chill. The first 2 episodes give us little to no context of his potential backgrounds, and he is mostly on sides, supporting Shazain in whatever bullshit they are prepping. But as it turns out, he is the son of a Band master, and judging from his fathers reaction to his expulsion, and their itty bitty talk from the promo, he probably has the most functional and healthy family, even if they’re poor. No sets for him yet, but him and Shariq are basically that one parent trope where one panics over literally everything (Shariq) and the other would rather sleep through the the storm than be bothered (Sheheryar).
Lastly, there’s Shariq (que “~He’s just a poor boy, from a poor family~”  blasting from the radio.) He is exactly that. The first two episodes give us some hints, such as him being the only one who is actually bothered about his studies, and that he is also the only one who panics whenever there is a chance of trouble going too far, but episodes three makes things a tiny bit more clear, and since my urdu hearing skills are like, 3 times worse than my english ones, what i managed to gather is that he’s adopted, his family (adoptive and otherwise) is clearly not well off, and he is going to be having a hard, hard time lol. He is relatively decent, like Saad, but like, minus the money and the stalker tendencies. No sets yet.
I’ll make a post about the ladies next, and maybe, just maybe, do episode reviews so I can look back on them 5 years into the future and still nod fervently at all the salt or be hecking embarrassed lol idk.

brandong50 replied to your photo “People are obsessed with power scaling. They refuse to admit that the...”
I mean the moment jiren got serious he one shots roshi with. I effort lol. I feel like people complain about the manga without even reading the chapters..... Sure I get the manga as of late has been rushing through this arc but on a realistic level that’s really its biggest offense. The anime consistently relied on ass pulling and pure mind numbing stupidity. Trunks got a new form that’s never explained and was able to make a spirit bomb without even trying. Vegeta got a random new form.  Goku got UI because he got hit really hard. Kefla in base was stronger than ssg goku yet a controlled fully powered berserk kale with the help of caulifla got shitted on by ssg goku. Zamasu became the universe? Wtf? 17 became blue level by raising his kids and stopping poachers? I almost forgot about this one, goku black and zamasu were forced to retreat because of tear gas...  The manga does stupid shit but the anime makes it look like a fucking work of art by comparison.
Hoo boy. Let’s break this down. “I mean the moment jiren got serious he one shots roshi with. I effort lol “ No, he kinda doesn’t. That’s the problem. He actually has to try. The manga even outright implies Roshi is more or less getting close to attaining Ultra Instinct.
Tumblr media
Roshi, in the anime, fought much slower and weaker opponents, not a guy stronger than a god. Even if he wasn’t going all out, he was at least using the same level of speed he’d been using on Goku, who couldn’t so much as get a solid hit in on him. And in the anime, they still managed to get this point across, still managed to give him a good showing (and actually let him get some KOs to his name) in the process. “I feel like people complain about the manga without even reading the chapters.” You must be new here, I suffer so my peeps don’t have to. “Sure I get the manga as of late has been rushing through this arc but on a realistic level that’s really its biggest offense. The anime consistently relied on ass pulling and pure mind numbing stupidity.” 90% of the manga has been just that but let’s go through your examples. “Trunks got a new form that’s never explained and was able to make a spirit bomb without even trying.” Trunks’ “new form” isn’t even a new form. It’s marketed like one, but for all intents and purposes in the series, it’s not. It’s simply Trunks focusing all his power into being used in one short burt; essentially, he becomes what seems to be far, far stronger, but it uses all his ki up front and he’s instantly drained when it wears off. It’s more like a Kaio-ken than anything else in practice. As for the latter? Yeah, kinda dumb. Wanna know what’s dumber? Goku inexplicably learning Beerus’ Desctruction technique, something reserved EXCLUSIVELY for Gods of Destruction that requires their specific sort of energy, and then somehow, inexplicably, having MISSED with it. Said technique being something that he’s supposedly not even used in practice before, yet he somehow knew it would work. Fused Zamasu being carved back into two by Trunks’ sword, only for both to then become... Fused Zamasu. Vegeta, who had only been healed by Trunks’ new healing powers enough to not die and stand on his own two feet being able to then rush in, kick a Goku in much better shape out of the way, and then OBLITERATE TWO FUSED ZAMASUS THAT NOT EVEN GOKU COULD HURT, AND STILL KEEP FIGHTING. This isn’t even touching on Kaioshin apprentices supposedly having healing powers they lose when becoming Kaioshin, and only Kaioshin being able to use the Time Rings, yet Zamasu is seen using both powers in tandem, or why the hell Zeno felt the need to literally erase the entire universe to deal with a small army of Zamasus rather than just erasing the Zamasus.  “Vegeta got a random new form.” He got one in the manga too. How exactly he was able to attain god ki at all? Never explained in the manga. How he managed to attain Super Saiyan God in the manga when the whole “Yamoshi” thing kinda deemed the ritual a necessity to tap into that? Never explained in the manga, it’s just handed to him for fanservice, along with somehow managing to make him even faster than in Blue. And given UI Omen was anime exclusive, and Toyotaro just LOVES him some Vegeta Wank, expect his special blue to show up in the manga too.   “Goku got UI because he got hit really hard.” Goku got UI because he was damn near killed, his body completely emptied, and the Spirit Bomb was absorbed enough into his body to act as a temporary power. Goku was essentially unconscious when he first used the form, as it was done to exemplify the body moving on its own, focused only on the fight. Which, frankly, actually ties in with Whis’ teachings, unlike, you know, just suddenly unlocking it in a burst of anger like a Super Saiyan form. “Kefla in base was stronger than ssg goku yet a controlled fully powered berserk kale with the help of caulifla got shitted on by ssg goku.” Do... do you not understand how Fusion works? Goku and Vegeta would have gotten stomped into dust if they’d fought Buu before they Fused; Goku at SSJ3 wouldn’t even have been enough. After Fusing though, they handled him as if it were child’s play. That’s literally how it works, my guy.   “Zamasu became the universe? Wtf?” Zamasu became a genuine god and his power was such that even after destroying his body, his spirit lived on and ascended, attempting to become an omnipotent, omnipresent being who was one with the Universe. The only person greater than him at that point was Zeno himself. Makes sense then to call him there and for him to erase that entire universe in order to eliminate Zamasu. Certainly, more than it does to do so because there were, like, 100 of him. “17 became blue level by raising his kids and stopping poachers?” 17 became as strong as he was because he trained and pushed himself for well over a decade. Also worth noting: He’s not “Blue Level” any more than Krillin is. Goku wasn’t even close to going all out at the point they were sparring, and Gohan, Vegeta, Freeza, etc. were still a good bit stronger than he was. Not sure why people think that 17′s job is literally all he could have been doing. “I almost forgot about this one, goku black and zamasu were forced to retreat because of tear gas...“ Gas is gas, my dude, and if you got a body it can be affected. Especially a mortal one, like what Black’s stuck in. I mean shoot, these people still need air too. Goku could conceivably die due to drowning in the lake by his house. Power don’t negate that. “The manga does stupid shit but the anime makes it look like a fucking work of art by comparison.” The manga also literally claims Goku is a terrible father, doesn’t care at all about his kids, resented Gohan and didn’t care for him when he wasn’t fighting, only starting to care when he saw Gohan “actually fights pretty good” (as if he didn’t already know it), and even insults his basic intellect and calls him a piss-poor fighter that relies on power over literally anything else, which is... well, just demonstrably untrue. Goku’s been strategizing throughout this entire series, finding ways to overcome gaps in power or resistance to conventional means of fighting. This manga is a low-tier fanfic written by a man who doesn’t understand these characters at all.

Nach Little Box of Hopes And Fears: Ezreal rework edition.
Let’s open this Pandora box, okay?
So, The Ezreal rework is probably hitting live somewhere at the end of the year after Worlds and the PBE during them, which gives us two months to sit, twiddle our thumbs and think. And Oh Boi! Have I thought! More under the cut because this Got Long.
This is all VERY subjective. Please take it with a grain of sea salt.
Let’s start from the beginning, as all organized matters should: What has Riot been doing with their reworks and Lore updates lately?
In my opinion, is give everyone and everything a place in the world, connecting characters and things that might have not been connected previously and retconning a few things along the way— With various degrees of success. The Darkin in Shurima are probably one of the biggest offenders here. While it gave them a place in Runaterra other than ‘Maybe aliens from another dimension/Old As Hell Demons’, Aatrox’s rework, Varus’s music video and Rhaast’s release never tied their designs or origins to anything Shuriman, from there the whiplash I got at least.
But that’s beside the point I’m trying to make. What’s Ezreal’s current state in the Lore?
Well, Ezreal has always been kind of in a weird spot post-institute, he’s from Piltover but has never had any strong affiliations or associations with the City State other than the place in which he spent his childhood, and now with the Piltover/Zaun and his own lore update, he has little ties in design as well! Back in the day, belts were all the rage in Piltover, now it’s more of an Art Deco thing —which I love— but Mr ‘I could probably go a week eating only the leather in my outfit’s belts and I still wouldn’t go hungry’ doesn’t fit anymore aesthetically. Shurima is still important to his character, since that’s where he got his gauntlet from, but as we can see from Elixir of Uloa, he’s not limited to exploring the desert, and to be honest? he never was.
Talking about design, it’s not that his design is horrendously bad, even if a bit ridiculous for his job (leather is not a breathable fabric), it just grew old. And it could have grown older! But the disparity between League’s current aesthetic/lore direction and Ezreal’s would have grown way too large for a champion so played. That’s why I reason they chose him, and not fiddlesticks or Udyr, for a VU/VO right now.
And here is where the box gets opened: let’s go first through the fears to have hope be sitting nice and pretty still inside at the end, okay?
I think everyone that follows me knows that, while I eat up any and all canon Ezreal content, I really don’t like the most recent approach Riot has had with his art: That Cutesy, Pixie Boy aesthetic that gets in my nerves and is present both in Star Guardian and the most recent World Championship skins. (Not to mention, they have gotten really lazy painting/modeling his face? I’d argue Ace of Spades has a prettier face than SG/SSG). Were his rework to take that direction for the sake of the good old ‘Ez is a girl’ joke, I’m going to be really sad about it. And Mad. Smad.
Not because I have a probelm with Ezreal not being your traditional hypermasculine fantasy male character, I quite enjoy that he isn’t, and if they were to tilt the scales in that direction to overfix the same joke, I’d still feel weird about it.
I think its easy to understand the fear of my favorite character being changed into the joke that has plagued him for years because of the homophobic fanbase that birthed it. My beef of course isn’t with male aligned people who don’t fit into the expectations of the gender, and it’s not my intention to imply that if you like the joke/ship, that you are contributing to your own oppression by reclaiming something they named as shameful— of course not. My beef is with the fact they claimed it shameful and that Riot is Not Woke Enough to pretend like it was their intention all along and they aren’t playing into the vices and prejuices of its fanbase. Let me explain.
Tar/ez or Eztar!c exists only because of the powerduo they used to be all the way back in Season 2, and persisted as an intracommunity joke because people just loved making fun of characters that didn’t quite fit with the usual Male Archetype(tm), Ezreal with his assumed ‘pretty boy’ looks (assumed because tbh no one was pretty back then) and lithe physique, and Taric with his ‘affeminate’ liking of gems. This joke, rooted in homophobia, turned both of their characters into jokes that Riot despite its best efforts because I mostly liked Taric’s rework, shut up, still l can’t completely overcome to this day, when the usage of ‘lol that’s so gay’ is not as negative as the beggining of the decade. It’s not like I think that it’s going to go away, I just fear it’s gonna get worse.
Not to mention! The wildly original, very alive horse that is the ‘Ez is a girl’ joke, comes from people forcing heterosexual roles into same gender relationships which, ew! That and his “Pretty anime boy” archetype, since those are also popular in yao! media (double ew). AND from the misogony that any male aligned person, or in less serious cases like this one, character, that doesn’t fall into line with the expectative of its gender, it’s marked as lesser. You might see this issues and think ‘I barely see that anymore’, which, fair. It has been in decline in the general Internet Population since the second half of the decade, but all of these problems stem from early 2010’s gamer culture so— Yeah. That’s another can of worms I am NOT opening.
TLDR: I feel like the the recent art direction comes from toxic places and I’m fearful Riot is gonna play into that instead of ignoring it.
It may be something else behind those decisions, but this is what my confirmation bias looks like.
Enough of unfounded fears I have now struck into your hearts because if I’m going to hell worrying about this, I’m gonna bring you all with me. Let’s think about hope.
My highest hopes for the update is that Riot plays into Ezreal’s lack of strong links— Not only do I think that it makes sense for a explorer to never truly belong in one place, it’s just easier and doesn’t force anything too alien to his character. I’d really like if they went for a ‘citizen of the world’ kind of deal. Make his design something based on Piltover but obviously worn and foreign, pepper his language with words from Shurima, Freljord, Ionia! Hell, with how big Noxus is, he’d have to learn to speak the language if he wanted to cross through it. I feel like he’s a wonderful opportunity to represent how diverse, yet interconnected Runnaterra is. I also feel like it plays into his fantasy of being a dashing —pun intended—young man who gets in and out of trouble, from adventure to adventure a la Indana Jones.
But going back to Riot’s Lore direction, we still need to tie him with somewhere, or at the very least, something.
Enter the world rune.
‘But Nach’ I hear you wail as I use either 50’s sellsman tactics or early 2000’s fanfic writer interrumptions to catch your attention, ‘World Runes are Ryze’s thing!’
Which, Fair. They are. I’m not saying Ezreal is gonna ‘prove himself to be able to let go of a World Rune’ since that is Ryze’s exclusive thing (even if the thought of that happening and Ez outright rejecting it cos Adventure sounds very appealing to me) I just want him to be tied to the missing World Rune because it makes sense for League’s token explorer to accidentaly stumble into the World Magic Battery.
Also because of the promo, but who knows. Maybe he wasn’t in the Ryze short precisely for that, maybe because since it had been so many years on the making, Ez wasn’t even in the Update Radar then and they just didn’t include him/made reference to him. It doesn’t matter, we don’t know. Time will tell.
Plus, him being tied to the World Rune would make Zoe’s fixation —as creepy as it is— make a bit more sense. If the Aspect Of Change that damned The Darkin is the same one we have today, It’d make her have more secretive, ulterior motives and connect her happy go lucky and childish personality to that mischeveous, manipulative persona we got to see in the Darkin story. If it turns out they are different, it still makes sense with Zoe’s Color story and IG characterization since she can’t seem to get serious about/remember what precisely she was supposed to omen.
TLDR Hopes: Just tie him to the world rune, it’d be cool. Also make him a fucking tutti fruti of cultures.
To tie it all up, I know there’s not much I can do but wait, since I am not active in the forums or the reddit community— but If I could feel in my heart Zoe was gonna have a crush on Ezreal when we got her ig teaser, then I do dare hope.

Dragon Ball Super Movie 1: Broly (2/2)
Tumblr media
Last time, Frieza was planning a trip to Earth to make a wish on the Dragon Balls, when Cheelai and Leemo showed up with a new recruit, Broly.   Now they’re hanging out in the mess hall of Frieza’s ship, and the strongest guy on the crew is drunkenly creeping on Cheelai.  I guess that lady in the background already shot him down, or he has a thing for the green ladies.
Tumblr media
I like this part where Leemo tries to defuse the situation noviolently.   He’s not a fighter, and even if he were, he probably wouldn’t stand a chance here, but he’s lived his whole life surrounded by super-strong guys, and he knows how to make due with what he has.    It doesn’t work here, but it adds a lot to this scene.
Tumblr media
Anyway, I don’t think you need me to tell you how this turns out.   Broly steps in, and he overpowers whatsisface in two seconds.   This is especially ironic in the U.S. dub, where Broly was voiced by notorious sex pest Vic Mignogna.   I kind of wonder what was going through his mind when he did this scene, except he probably didn’t even know the context.    They just told him to grunt and yell.   Still, he must have watched the movie at some point, right?
Like how would he not make the connection that he’s the grey dude in this scenario, and Broly is getting major babyface heat by standing up for Cheelai?   Like, this whole scene was created to make Broly sympathetic, especially compared to his original 1993 incarnation.    Good guys respect women, bad guys harass them.    Did the point just sail over his head?  He was probably all: “Gosh, Broly should have stayed out of this, and donated money to the grey man for his defamation lawsuit against Cheelai.”
Tumblr media
Oh, who am I kidding, he probably spent the whole movie staring at Cheelai’s boobs.  Or the nearest woman in the theater.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Paragus thinks Broly’s getting out of hand, so he uses the shock collar to settle him down.    Cheelai and Leemo are outraged (again), but Paragus insists that it’s necessary to keep Broly from going nuts and killing them all.
I’m a bit conflicted about the collar.   It’s clearly a replication of the mind-control tiara Paragus used on Broly in the DBZ movie, but this is much simpler in design.   Just an electric shock, nothing more.    I like the simplicity of it.
However, I also liked the mind-control tiara.    It looked stylish, and I liked the mystery of how it worked and where Paragus got it from.   There was that scene in Movie 8 where he had an alien henchman run a diagnostic on the device, but there’s no telling if that guy built it or if he’s just the closest thing Paragus could find to an expert.  There was a mystique about the thing, which the shock collar just does away with entirely.   I’m not sure whether that’s a good thing or not.
Tumblr media
But it probably serves this plot better, because Cheelai picks Paragus’ pocket while they talk, and she stomps the controller after he leaves.    Probably would have been harder to make this work with a magic device like that arm thing Paragus used to make the tiara work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paragus gets summoned to Frieza’s chamber again, so while he’s gone, Broly hangs out with his new pals in... I guess a cargo room?     He thinks ordinary water is delicious, to give you an idea of how rough it was for him growing up on Vampa.   He then explains the fuzzy green thing around his waist, which always reminds me of the bathmat at my grandmother’s house.   Paragus used to make Broly provoke a giant green animal on Vampa as a training exercise, until eventually they became friends.     Broly named it “Ba” after the noise it made.  Paragus disapproved of their friendship, so he shot Ba’s ear off to piss him off good, and put a stop to that.   Broly never saw Ba again, so he kept the ear as a memento, and that’s what he’s been wearing this whole time.
See, I like this better than Broly’s Movie 8 outfit, because it has a backstory.   I think Ba’s ear was conceived as a way to give Broly a wrap like the red one worn by the original, but someone, probably Toriyama, wanted there to be something more to it.
Tumblr media
Anyway, this tale pretty much defines Paragus and Broly’s relationship.   Paragus seems to genuinely care about the boy, but his main objective is for Broly to become as strong as possible so that he can prove King Vegeta was wrong to exile them.    In pursuit of this goal, Paragus has micro-managed Broly to the point where he has almost no freedom at all.   Cheelai suspect that Broly doesn’t even enjoy fighting, which sounds pretty extreme for a Saiyan, but she might be right.  I’d like to think this version of Broly would enjoy fighting, but not the way Paragus has been handling things.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the good guys arrive at the ice continent to find the seventh Dragon Ball.   Frieza’s goons stole the first six and the Dragon Radar, so it doesn’t take long for Goku and Vegeta to track them down.    Here, we see them in their cute cold weather gear.    I don’t get how those coats do a damn thing in the antarctic, but I love Bulma’s spacesuit-looking thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So they find the two goons, and one of them looks like an alien John Banner from Hogan’s Heroes.    They’re terrified of Goku because he’s breathing hard on the glass of their ship.   I’d be more worried about him doing a pressed fruit basket on the glass.
Tumblr media
Luckily for them, they radioed Frieza about finding the seventh ball right before Goku showed up, so Frieza comes to the rescue.  They banter for a while, but the big story everyone wants to know about is Frieza’s backup.   He introduces Paragus and Broly, and Frieza’s plan is to have Broly do all the fighting, and he’ll let them kill Vegeta as long as he gets to finish off Goku.
Tumblr media
So Vegeta and Broly start us off.   Broly does reasonably okay, but Vegeta seems to have the upper hand the whole time, and then he turns Super Saiyan, which freaks Paragus out, because he didn’t even know that was a thing.    That bums Frieza out, because I guess he assumed Broly could do it too?  Why would he think that?   I mean, he turns out to be right later, but he should know that not just any Saiyan can pull that off.
Tumblr media
Moreover, Vegeta can transform further than this.   People made a big to-do about this part, where he uses the Super Saiyan God form Goku used in Movie 14, but I don’t know, it doesn’t seem like that big a deal to me.     I mean, Super Saiyan Blue is better, and Vegeta knows how to do that one, so what’s the difference?  I mean, I’m the guy who really wanted to see Vegeta use Super Saiyan 3 a long time ago, so I get why this is a big deal for people, but it doesn’t mean much to me personally.
At any rate, Vegeta seems disgusted with Broly’s performance, but I think it says a lot that he managed to hold out this long against Super Saiyan God Vegeta.
Tumblr media
Around this point, Paragus tries to call Broly off, but he can’t, because he doesn’t have the remote to use the shock collar.  I’m not sure I understand what was supposed to happen if he still had it.   Was Frieza going to fight Goku and Vegeta by himself?  Was he going to just quietly withdraw and leave the Dragon Balls behind?
Also, I’d just like to take this time to point out that Paragus looks really dumb here.   He looked cool at the start of the movie, when he was younger and looked more like his 1993 design, but then they dressed him in this green and purple number, and the pink shower curtain looks really dumb.    Also, I hate how they lightened his skin tone in this movie.  At least they brought back Dameron Clarke to play him in the dub.     I really like Paragus, and he’s mostly okay in this movie, but he’s nowhere near as cool as the ‘93 version.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the fight, Broly somehow gets a second wind, and holds of Vegeta, even in his god form.   Paragus suggests that Broly has somehow tapped into the Oozaru power Saiyans have when they turn into giant apes.   Except Broly’s tail was cut off at a young age, so he hasn’t turned into a giant ape in years.     Paragus seems to think that Broly’s body is using that power anyway, but without the transformation turning him into a big, bulky ape, there’s nothing to slow down his movements.
Also, Broly is glowing green when he does this, so maybe the implication is that this was what every version of Broly has been doing, and I guess Kale too.    I’ve also seen it suggested that this ties into Super Saiyan 4 somehow.    I mean, it makes sense, because you have to be a Super Saiyan and a Giant Ape at the same time to go SSJ4, and then you shrink down into a humanoid state, with the powers of both.  Broly’s doing it in a different order, but maybe he’s worked out something similar?
The thing is, I don’t really buy Oozaru power as a useful thing.   This franchise retired the concept thirty years ago, save for a brief comeback in Dragon Ball GT.   Hell, they didn’t even show anyone turning into a giant ape in this movie, which seems to rely onthe concept quite a bit.   If Great Ape power was so hot, why don’t they just go all in and use it?    The implication of DBZ was that, past a point, it just stops mattering, and when Goku and Vegeta became powerful enough, the form became obsolete.   But somehow Broly’s using it and he’s strong enough to throw hands with god-Saiyans.  Or maybe Paragus is completely wrong about all of this, and he’s only guessing Oozaru stuff for lack of a better explanation.
I mean, I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade.    There’s SSJ4 fans who really like how this movie teased at the form, and that’s great lore, even if this is as far as it goes, but it doesn’t mean that much to me.  Personally, I’m more into how Goku used the term “base form” in the script.   As in: Broly is holding off Vegeta, even in his base form.   I’m pretty sure that’s the first time it’s been used in official material.
Tumblr media
So then Goku decides to jump in, using his base form as well, which I find pretty dumb, since Broly was beating up Vegeta in SSG mode a minute ago.    This sort of teeters on the brink of GT Logic.   I really prefer the way things were in the Cell Saga, where no one would even try to fight Cell or the androids until they were comfortably transformed.    I mean, why would you not?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Goku uses Super Saiyan Classic for a bit, then he ramps up to his own Nacho Cheese form, and he manages to subdue Broly for a hot minute.   He tries to reason with the guy, saying that he isn’t all that bad, so why not make peace.   Notably, when Goku tells Broly he doesn’t have to listen to those bad guys at the ship, it makes Paragus really nervous, like he’s terrified that someone will tell Broly that and he’ll actually listen.
Tumblr media
But then Broly powers up and fights his way out of it, and starts taking control of the battle again.
Tumblr media
The weaker bad guys lift off to get clear of the battle, while Frieza and Paragus remain behind to watch.    Cheelai is frustrated that Broly is being used to fight this sort of battle, even though he happens to be doing pretty well so far.
Tumblr media
Piccolo contacts Goku telepathically about this situation, and Goku plans to teleport to Piccolo’s location if things go south.    But first...
Tumblr media
... he turns Super Saiyan Blue and tries to fight Broly that way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this is where the movie uses a bunch of CGI stuff, like like in Battle of Gods and Resurrection F.   The graphics look better, like something out of Fighter Z instead of Raging Blast 2, but it still looks dumb.   What Toei doesn’t seem to understand is that this stuff ages really poorly.   This movie’s not even a year old, and it already stands out.    It’s not about improving the graphics, either.  The problem is that the poses look so robotic and lifeless.   This is especially true for this movie, where most of the animation is so fluid and expressive.
Tumblr media
For example.
Tumblr media
During this part of the fight, the land gets torn up, exposing the magma below, and Paragus begins to wonder if King Vegeta had been right all along.  Maybe Broly really is too dangerous, and sending him to Vampa was the best thing for everyone.  As it is, Goku Blue is winning, and Broly is too far gone to realize that he needs to stop fighting.    Without the remote, Paragus can only stand by and watch his son get killed.
Tumblr media
But Frieza isn’t giving up yet.   Once he’s certain that Broly has no more miracles in him...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... he kills Paragus himself, and calls out to Broly to make sure he sees what’s happened.
Tumblr media
And that causes Broly to flip out and turn Super Saiyan himself.   I guess this is just Super Saiyan 1, and not some nutty alternate form, but the point is that Broly was doing very well in his regular state, so any transformation on top of that makes him unstoppable.   Goku tries to hang in there, but then Vegeta jumps in and tells him that he can’t possibly win alone.
Tumblr media
So they try hitting him with a Kamehameha/Gallic Gun combo, but that does nothing...
Tumblr media
... then they lead him directly towards Frieza, and Broly attacks him instead, because I guess he’s not picky at this point.
Tumblr media
Then they teleport to Piccolo.   Goku’s plan now is to use the Fusion Technique, but he needs Piccolo to coach them because Vegeta’s never done it before.
Tumblr media
Okay, so a couple of problems I have with this part.   First, I really don’t like the idea of Broly vs. Gogeta being a thing.   I first saw this idea in the opening credits for Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3, and it always annoyed me because I never cared for the idea of Broly as such a powerful threat that only fusion could beat him.    Broly’s deal is that he’s an evil Super Saiyan, so my preferred scenario is for Goku or Vegeta to beat him solo.
Tumblr media
Second, I’m not wild about how this movie tries to do Broly, Gogeta, and Bardock as a combination platter.   The Bardock stuff works reasonably well, since Broly’s origin story takes place when Bardock was around, and Dragon Ball Minus was already written.   And Broly was a non-canon concept, so revamping him for this wasn’t a terrible idea.    But throwing Gogeta in too just feels like pandering to me.    For years, Fathom Events has been screening DBZ features in theaters, and they always seem to go for “Bardock: Father of Goku”, “Fusion Reborn”, and “Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan.”   I feel like a Cooler movie made the cut once, but that was a long time ago.    The point is that someone in charge seems to consider those three specials to be the most popular or best ones, and it feels an awful lot like this DBS movie is trying to cash in on that.
Tumblr media
And I can’t blame Toei for wanting to combine three popular titles, but it just feels a little too convenient.   Fans saw Gogeta coming, because they noticed the lineup Fathom Events had before this movie premiered, and they knew Broly and Bardock would be in this one, so it got them thinking Gogeta would make an appearance as well.
Tumblr media
With Bardock, you can make a case that this version is an improvement over the “Father of Goku” version.  And Broly may be better off this way than the 1993 version of the character.   But this take on Gogeta isn’t nearly as fun or cool as “Fusion Reborn”.    The boys just leave the battlefield and drill the Fusion dance until they get it right.    How does that make any sense?
Tumblr media
Don’t get me wrong, it’s funny how Frieza gets the shit beat out of him for over and hour, but how does that make sense at all?
Tumblr media
I mean, Golden Frieza couldn’t beat Goku or Vegeta in the last movie, so how can he survive against a guy who was taking them both on at the same time?  For an hour?   How did Frieza survive this?
Tumblr media
Really, longer than that, because Gogeta takes a minute to decide what to call himself.   It’s a cute moment, but still.   Part of what makes Fusion Reborn so awesome was that Goku had to convince Vegeta and teach him the fusion in the middle of the battlefield.    When they screwed it up, Janemba kept trying to kill them while they tried to deal with it.  This movie sucks all of that tension away.
Tumblr media
There is a part where Broly goes after Whis and can’t hit him, so maybe Whis kept the big guy busy for a while, but I dunno.   Anyway, Gogeta teleports in and promises to handle the rest.
Tumblr media
Bulma looks really cute here, by the way.
Tumblr media
So yeah, Gogeta goes Super Saiyan and they fight so hard that it opens up a dimensional rift or something...
Tumblr media
I don’t know what the idea here was, but it’s trippy and I like it, I guess.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Gogeta goes Blue and punches Broly hard enough that they go back to the real world.
Tumblr media
But this screencap pretty well sums it up.   A blue guy and a green guy shooting green and blue shit at each other.
Tumblr media
Gogeta even uses the Stardust Breaker from Movie 12, but Broly survives, even though Gogeta’s at Super Saiyan Blue.   I gotta be honest, this is just a bit too wacky for me.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Cheelai and Leemo steal the Dragon Balls and summon Shenron.   She forces whatsisname to tell them how to make the wish, but it turns out you can just ask Shenron directly, so it’s not that complicated.
Tumblr media
See, the big twist of this movie, which is really what holds all of this together, is that Broly’s not the villain after all.   He’s the victim here, and that puts things in a whole other light now that Gogeta is turning the tables on him.   When I found out this movie would come down to Broly vs. Gogeta, I wondered how evenly matched they would be, but since Broly is sympathetic, it changes the equation.   Gogeta can just whale on the guy, and it doesn’t matter, because the real suspense is whether Cheelai can save Broly before it’s too late.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As Gogeta prepares a finishing blast, Cheelai wishes for Broly to be sent back to Vampa, and Shenron does it.   Vampa sucks, but at least Broly is safe here.
Tumblr media
Then Leemo and Cheelai fly out of here to save themselves.  Frieza tries to blast them out of the sky.   Why didn’t he stop them before they made their wish?   Also, why didn’t Shenron offer to grant two more wishes?
Tumblr media
In any case, Gogeta stops Frieza from killing them, and he shrugs Gogeta off and prepares to leave.   Gogeta just... stands there and lets him?    Why?   Vegeta has always wanted Frieza dead, and Goku learned the hard way in the last movie.    This is dumb.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Beerus has done absolutely jack shit through this whole movie and he’s very pleased about it.
Tumblr media
In space, Cheelai plans to drop Leemo off somewhere and then head for Vampa.   She figures she’s a fugitive from the GP and the Frieza Force, so it’s about the only place left for her to go.    This definitely has nothing to do with the generous bulge in Broly’s tights, no sir.
But Leemo wants to tag along, since he figures he doesn’t have much going for him either.
Tumblr media
Frieza knows that they’re all together on Vampa, but he decides to leave them be for now.   He seems to think they can make Broly stronger and better able to control his power, and that suits him for... some reason.
Tumblr media
This line confuses me.  Is he saying he wants another nemesis, in addition to Goku and Vegeta?   Or is he saying that he wants a potential ally to help him defeat Goku and Vegeta?   Or something else altogether?
Tumblr media
On Vampa, Cheelai and Leemo are starting to realize what they’ve signed on for here.   The only food on the planet is bitter, and everything is trying to kill them.
Tumblr media
Then Goku just teleports into their cave and gives them a capsule house full of provisions.   He even gives them a couple of senzu beans.
Tumblr media
Cheelai is suspicious of Goku, but he explains that he just wants them to be safe and healthy, because he wants to fight Broly again sometime.    After all, it took nothing less than Gogeta Blue to beat him, so he must be a worthy opponent.
Tumblr media
Cheelai still regards Goku as an enemy, but he doesn’t particularly care, since he can find them wherever they go, and Broly seems happy with the idea of fighting with him for funsies.
Tumblr media
So Cheelai lightens up a bit and thanks him.   Then they ask Goku his name, because they never heard who this guy is or what he’s all about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So he says that he’s Son Goku... and Kakarot.   I like the dub version better, where he specifically says “Broly... call me Kakarot.”   Either way, I like this ending, because “Kakarot” was Broly’s catchphrase in the 90′s, and he never says it once in this movie, because he never heard the name until this point.  So that’s pretty cool.
But more importantly, I like this as character development for Goku, who once bitterly rejected his Saiyan heritage, including his birth name.   Now, it looks like he’s come around on that, to the point where he wants other Saiyans to call him Kakarot.   It works well with my personal canon that Saiyans view this as a matter of honor.   Vegeta knows he goes by “Son Goku”, but he thinks it would be more insulting to call him that, even if that’s his preference.
Tumblr media
And that’s the movie.   All in all, a pretty good one, probably one of the best, but not as good as my favorites.   I think it would have been better if they had used new concepts and characters instead of mining the past for ideas.   A different Saiyan could have played the Broly role just fine, but they went with Broly because of his popularity.    Some other power could have been used to defeat him, but they went with fusion because it was popular.    It get the reasoning, but I can’t help but notice how Cheelai became the breakout star of this thing, and everyone loves Cheelai and she just might be the most popular thing to come out of this movie, and lo and behold, she’s a wholly original idea.  It just makes you wonder what else they might have come up with if they hadn’t stopped with her.

SHINSEKAI - Empire of Fantasy: Chapter 10
Location: Tohoku Town (SHINSEKAI)  Characters: Mika, Shuu & Tsumugi
TL Note:
Deadwood (窓際族) - This specifically refers to people who were deemed useless in their job and would be given a seat by the window with no real work to do. This concept does not exist in my country (you’d most likely just be fired), so I don’t know if there is a proper English term for it.
Tale of Heike - This is an epic account of the struggle between the Taira and the Minamoto Clans for control of Japan at the end of the 12 century in the Genpei War.
< The next day. VR space “SHINSEKAI”, main street. >
Tumblr media
Tsumugi: “Ahahahahaha ☆”
Shuu: …………
Tsumugi: “You’re kidding, right? It didn’t end up being ‘fine’, right?”
“‘That’s because we’ve invincible artists’? Ahahaha, that’s no good at all!”
“You would be forfeiting all of ‘Valkyrie’s’ achievements that you’ve earned thus far in ‘SHINSEKAI’. You understand that, right? That sounds like what a wimp would say and it just weirds me out!”
Shuu: …………
Tsumugi: “It seems you’ve successfully completed a few missions and events here and there, but you’ve lost every PVP battle!”
“You already have many battles where you’ve lost by default by abandoning the battle as well…”
“Are you two okay? Do you have the motivation to do this?”
“At this rate, you’ll be targetted by the other idols as a ‘delicious opponent’ until you have nothing left, you know?”
“Ohh, is that what you’re actually aiming for? You’ll act like you’re easy game and then turn the tables on them when they have their guard down?”
“But of course not, right? You always take your battles head-on, don’t you, Shuu-kun~?”
“You’re taking it seriously but you’re not doing great, are you~!? Poor Shuu-kun! Ahahahaha ☆”
Shuu: Aoba.
Tsumugi: “Yes?”
Shuu: It was mentioned that the laws of the real world are not reflected within this “SHINSEKAI”, correct? So, if I were to kill you right now–
Mika: Nghahh, calm down, Oshi– Onii-chan!
Tsumugi: “That is correct~ I’m not the real Tsumugi Aoba, anyway.”
“I’ll be at a loss if you took your anger out on me. Besides, support characters like us don’t have the abilities to fight.”
Shuu: Who can trust those words of yours? You intend to hurt me by dressing up as an innocent third party, don’t you? You’ve always been that sort of person!
Tsumugi: “Ahaha. You sure hate Tsumugi Aoba-kun ♪”
“But I ended up agitating you because it started getting fun for me too. Please don’t do something unfitting of an idol and kill or curse another human.”
“You’ll be deducted points. In other words, ‘SSG’ will be confiscated as a penalty.”
“If you’re irritated, there are plenty of monsters walking about over there, so please hit the ‘characters that are meant to be hit’; the ones who don’t have personalities.”
“That way, you won’t have to hurt a single real, living human being.”
Shuu: Hmph. What fun is there, playing with an inanimate object with no soul?
Mika: I think we’ll be doomed if we say that, Onii-chan~ And it might be possible for dolls to gain a soul if they’ve been given a lot of love, though.
Tsumugi: “Fufu. Anyway, please treat it as though everything that happens in this ‘SHINSEKAI’ will be broadcast in the show.”
“In truth, scenes will be broadcast after careful selection, though. You two are a hot stock so it’s possible every one of your scenes could be broadcast across the country..”
“Please keep that in mind and act like an idol at all times.”
Shuu: Act like an idol, you say…? I do not enjoy indulging in the flattery of the public.
Tsumugi: “But if you do, you’ll have a rather good reputation in this ‘SHINSEKAI’ and that means you would have succeeded, you know?”
“Sometimes, when you’re given a few options during missions, if you choose the most idol-like option, they’ll end up being the ‘correct’ answer most of the time.”
Shuu: Hmph. So what of it? We’ll walk down the path we chose of our own accord. I won’t give in to peer pressure.
Tsumugi: “Hmm~ I’d like you two to stop being so stubborn and be obedient kids, though.”
“At this rate, you’ll simply lose all your money and you’ll fall into ruin. You’ve also finally obtained a ticket to take part in the ‘SS’ finals, so you’ll end up losing that as well.”
“Now that ‘SSL$’ are automatically converted into ‘SSG’, everything you did during the ‘Championship Match’ would have mostly been for nought.”
“It simply means the money you had in the first place would appear to be a lot more than what you currently own in comparison.”
“And if you continue to lose your money, it would be especially difficult for ‘Valkyrie’ to win the “SS” Qualifying Round.”
Shuu: I will repeat myself, but what of it? It’s not a loss for us if we’re unable to participate in the “SS” finals.
We won the “Championship Match” and we were able to prove our worth there.
And with no boisterous merrymaking from our side in this ridiculous unreality.
Tsumugi: “Ahaha. You may think that things are going swell for you two, but ES and the public only see you as ‘idols who only know how to perform’.”
“And currently, jobs other than performances are rapidly increasing. Under normal circumstances, idols are all about performing, though.”
“In such an era, how much do you think ‘idols who only know how to perform’ are wanted?”
“You two will gradually be washed away from the mainstream and you’ll lose your position at ES. And ES is a utopia created for idols by the hands of idols.”
“You two don’t have what it takes to be an ES idol and you’re just an artist…”
“It would simply be impossible for you two to do the same or even more than that in this current era.”
“You would be declined any funding, lose opportunities and be slowly deprived of your job. That’s where human resources who are difficult to handle and go against the higher-ups in this adult society end up.”
“I believe those sorts of people were called deadwood[1] in the past.”
Shuu: Hmph. Not an idol nor a person is what you want to say, isn’t it? You should reread The Tale of Heike[2].
Tsumugi: “You should, as well. You should be well aware of what fate lies before an arrogant ‘sovereign’ who stopped reflecting on himself. Isn’t that right, ‘Valkyrie’?”
Shuu: …………

MY DBS MANGA CHAPTER 72 REVIEW... 😒
Hey there... Here comes the review.
Imma start like this and use language some ppl may find offensive. Goku, Vegeta, & Granolah are retarded. Now that that's out of the way, time to dissect this "Dragon Ball Super coloring book."
Goku & Vegeta land on the planet & its peaceful. How are they not immediately suspicious? They see that the planet isn't in danger & no death. Its obvious they need to ask a question to figure out what lies they've been told.
I was gonna say its dumb for Granolah to be able to supress his ki because it seems only Earthling have that kind of spiritual understanding. But Namekians have that spiritual understanding too so maybe Monaito taught Granolah how to suppress his ki.
I lost interest in the Heeters' past. You can only tease me so long until I stop caring. At least mention something like Freeza almost killed Gas on planet Cereal so now that's why Gas keeps trying to get stronger. There's so little info about "important" stuff that's supposed to be important. Give readers a tease, hint, a different hint, some valuable info, then another hint, then a reaveal (or something similar!) Instead its tease, hint, tease, tease, hint, tease...
In all honesty, the chapter didn't even need that page with Gas & Elec. When Maki said Gas & Elec are coming, that was all we needed to know. Then we anticipate their arrival in the next chapter. Showing them is a waste of time & they add no real purpose to the chapter. That was just a waste of ink.
Also I'm bored of Gas now. He only looks interesting but does nothing. 👎
Granolah shoots at Goku & Vegeta. Base Goku closes his eyes to use UI (UI Omen?) while Vegeta goes SS. Base Goku dodges easier than Vegeta. Goku is leagues beyond Vegeta.
A better way to have Goku & Vegeta encounter Granolah would be for him to snipe at them right when they get off the ship. Granolah wanted to kill them so bad so why wait for them?
Somehow they go towards Granolah but he's too fast for them & they lose him. They can't sense him firing ki for some reason. Idk why Goku didn't use Instant Transmission when Granolah shot ki at them?
I don't get why Goku closes his eyes either. Its as if Goku can't use UI now unless his eyes are closed but that wasn't the case before. Eyes were opend when using UI Omen & Mastered UI. Toyo could have conveyed that better but instead he's making Goku close his eyes like how Roshi covered his eyes when fighting those prisoner women because their beauty distracted him. Is Goku distracted by Granolah's beauty or something?
Wait a sec... I gotta backtrack real quick. Goku used the Ultra Instinct technique in his base & didn't go into Ultra Instinct Omen? But thats him using it in base right? Oh boy... This is about to get dumb...
Ultra Idiot Goku & Super Stupid Vegeta are surprised that the guy having the title of "strongest in the universe" is capable of moving faster than them when they aren't at full power. Such genius writing.
Goku gets shot in the neck... & it knocks him out... Ok. But later Granolah comments on how Goku's body moves on it's own before Goku can even process an attacks. Not to mention Goku & Whis have said the same thing. Goku should be untouchable at this point, but for some reason he is not.
Tumblr media
So, Vegeta takes a senzu bean from his "training bra" and gives it to Goku. For some reason they decided to only take 2 senzu when knowing they would fight a guy possibly stronger than them. Stupid monkeys.🐒 (I'm starting to sound like Freeza now)
Tumblr media
How did unconscious Goku eat a senzu? Yaoi fans would had loved it if Vegeta chewed the senzu up for Goku and fed it to him. Sorry, it just reminded me of Trunks spitting senzu mush into Mai's mouth since she was unconscious.
Then we have this dialogue from "sensei" Vegeta, The Ultra Instinct Expert...
"You rely on Ultra Instinct too much! If you haven't perfected it yet, then dodge using your mind!" - Vegeta
"Yeah, you're right..." - Goku
"WTF Toyotaro!" - DB Meta
... I'm unsure who is the stupid one in this situation. Is it Goku or Vegeta? It could be Vegeta because UI is the ultimate technique that allows you to move without thinking. But Vegeta says that because Goku hasn't perfected Ultra Inst-...
...
...
Sorry, I had to restart my brain...
Didn't... didn't Goku master Ultra Instinct? Silver hair? Silver eyes? MASTERED/PERFECTED ULTRA INSTINCT? Before that, Goku perfected Ultra Instinct Omen & could go in it at will... So, Goku is listening to Vegeta tell him he hasn't mastered UI? But both know that Goku did master UI? What does Vegeta know? Vegeta can't even use UI.
Tumblr media
I almost stopped reading the rest of the colouring book when I got to that dialogue.
Also, Granolah wants to kill Saiyans, so why is he holding back and not hitting them with deadly attacks. He only needs one alive anyways. He said so himself.
At least there was a good pose Goku was in. The art looked nice there.
Now here's another place I almost quit reading. Granolah apparently has all the abilities of Goku & Vegeta. Hack writing. Sounds like a Moro, 7-3, & Cell copy cat. Toyo just cant leave the Cell saga alone.
Granolah is bumping his gums & rattling his tongue (old slang for "talking a lot") but when Vegeta asks if Granolah holds a grudge against Saiyans, Granolah suddenly says that's enough talking. He responded to them 3 times & spoke like 5 sentences to them. If you're gonna chat then chat. If you hate Saiyans then don't say anything to them & try to kill them. Dummy.
Granolah uses Hakai. But aparently he's not using Hakai or Instant Transmission. Its just "similar." Sure. Confirms that he has been using something similar to UI in previous chapters too.
Granolah says they're stronger than expected because they escaped into the air. Escape doesn't equal strenght. Mai escaped Goku Black, doesn't mean she's extremely strong.
Tumblr media
But seriously, Vegeta saying he's gonna prove his training is better than Goku is stupid. He wants to prove he is better than Goku yet he tells Goku to fight first (that's beta). It's as if he isn't confident & wants Goku to wear Granolah out first, so he can come in and look impressive. Kinda like in RoF after Freeza was tired from fighting Goku & Vegeta wasn't tired at all & he easily beat Freeza up. Looked cool, but actually wasn't too impressive.
Granolah saying that he's gonna shoot them if they don't fight him is ridiculous. Why is he showing mercy to the tribe that didn't show his ppl mercy? Why give chances to the ppl you wanted revenge on for years? Realistically he would just start blasting at them.
Tumblr media
Unecessary dialogue from Vegeta talking to himself about how he needs to learn who Granolah is. Show don't tell Toyo.
Why is Granolah waiting for the Oozaru form? Maybe he wants to kill them in that form? What about revenge? Just kill them.
Goku screamed to power up from SS to SSG. That's possibly dumb, but I gotta let at least 1 thing slide this chapter.
Why did Granolah let them power up? So unlike what we've been shown what Granolah is like. Why would he want to give "murderers" of his entire race a fair chance to fight him?
Next, Goku doesn't try to explain he isn't savage like other Saiyans when Granolah accuses his kind of being so. Instead Goku just agrees & says "Oh... Yeah." I guess he really just wants to fight. I can't tell if this is OOC or just magnifying a Saiyan flaw of Goku just to push the story along. Idk. I'm losing brain cells reading this chapter.
Granolah's fighting stance is cool. Hey, look. I said a nice thing. (But why is he doing close combat when being a sniper us his specialty?)
So, Goku uses UI in SSG form... Bruh, is Ultra Instinct a technique, a state of mind, or a transformation? I'll tell you what it is. ULTRA INSTINCT IS A PLOT DEVICE! It does whatever Toyotaro decides at the moment. So freaking inconsistent... 😓😒
Ultra Instinct becomes more accurate when in conjunction with a SS form?! How tho? I thought it was just a goldy technique that needed a clear mind and control or whatever. Or is UI a transformation like Toyo stated many times in previous chapters, while also calling UI a technique? How can mixing a godly "technique" with a SS form enhance it better than Goku simply using UI Omen? It doesnt! Vegeta, you can just shut up! Every time you talk about UI, you've been wrong! It should be illegal impersonating an UI Expert.
Goku is using the Ultra Instinct technique in base form against Granolah.
UI Omen is Goku using the Ultra Instinct technique in base form.
Goku uses Ultra Instinct technique in the Super Saiyan God transformation.
Mastered UI is Goku mastering the technique or maybe using the technique as a transformation? (Toyo is confusing.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So why isn't Goku going into UI Omen when using UI in base? Why does Vegeta say "Ultra Instinct... becomes more accurate when used in conjunction with a Super Saiyan form"? Does that mean Mastered UI is a Saiyan form in conjunction with the Ultra Instinct technique? So, there's an unknown silver haired Saiyan transformation that Goku was utilizing in conjunction with Ultra Instinct? I guess this confirms that "Super Saiyan Blanco" is real y'all.
Tumblr media
I suppose that if UI in base isn't the same as UI Omen, then by that logic, there is also an unknown "Super Saiyan Noir" form we haven't seen yet.
I'm done with Ultra Instinct in the manga. Toytaro doesn't know if UI is a technique or a transformation. I could explain it better than him, but I'm not tye one writing official material. Why should I make sense of his bad writing when he will change things later? HE should explain it clearly to US. He is extremely inconsistent with his explanations and will change them when he feels like it.
I dont care what Geekdom101 says about UI being both technique & transformation, because Ultra Instinct IS NOT a transformation nor a technique anymore. ULTRA INSTINCT IS JUST A PLOT DEVICE. 😑
[You can skip this little section. I'm talking about inconsistencies from the Moro arc]
I remember when I talked about how Moro's life draining powers were retconned multiple times.
Moro can absorb life energy from a planet while he is in outer space, then he is nerfed to only being able to take life energy by directly touching you, later Vegeta says they need to get off the ground because now Moro (who is stronger and fused with the planet) can only steal your life enrgy while making contact with you. He could absorb life energy from entire planets from space, but has to make contact with somebody once he got stronger?
Let's not forget it's said Moro drains life energy, but can't drain 17 & 18 because they say they don't have life energy. I guess that means Krillin had a daughter with a dead woman? No. Multiple times, 17 & 18 contributed to the Genki Dama (a collection of life energy). Goku gathers energy from trees, animals, ppl, everything living. This means 17 & 18 do have life energy because they are living beings. But the energy they fight with is unlimited artificial energy.
So if 17 & 18 can give life energy to Goku for a Genki Dama, then Moro should be able to take their life energy just like anyone else. What he can't take is their energy they use for battle because itsunlimited & artificial. Toyotaro does not understand this important detail nor does he understand many other details about these iconic character. So why is the the writer if he is getting so much wrong? Why is he not soley the artist?
Goku uses UI in SSG form to dodge a barrage of attacks from Granolah that are aimed at the planet. They must be weak attacks because the explosions are tiny. Is Granolah really trying to kill them?
Goku using UI in SSG but somehow gets caught off gaurd. Did UI just get nerfed so that Vegeta can look like he is on the same level as Goku in a later chapter? I think it did...
Granolah took Goku down a second time... Wow Goku, you kinda suck. In DBS CH 65 on page 11, after Moro broke his arm on UI Goku's chest, Whis said "When Ultra Instinct is honed to this extent, the body will automatically grow sturdier as necessary." Why is Goku holding back against the strongest in the universe? Oh yeah, that's right... UI is getting nerfed.
Tumblr media
Vegeta, what do you mean "How is he learning Kakarot's weaknesses so quickly?" Everybody has similar vital spots in DB. Thats not learning, thats just knowing. Are you just a dummy, Vegeta? Do you not know where vital spots are?
Granolah can tell Goku's body is moving before his brain tells him to react. Granolah the UI "expert" can see all with his eye. You know who else can see with their eye? Tien. Speaking of Tien, I wanna go back to Earth now. What's Piccolo doing? I bet everyone on Earth is chilling or at work. Is it bad I'd rather watch Gohan at a conference than watch Goku, Vegeta, & Granolah be dummies? I'd rather watch Chi-Chi cooking with vegetables instead of watching vegetable puns fight a cereal pun. I'm sorry, the dialogue is just so bad...
How does Granolah's right eye being able to observe blood flow & muscle movements let you know where to strike? Dude, vital spots are where your organs are, & pressure points, & your head area, & you arteries, & so on. Ya ain't gotta observe blood flow to know that. Granolah just making stuff up now to sound cool. News flash, you failed. If he was sniping and able to track them based on blood flow and muscle movement, then that would had been smarter writing.
Granolah: "This right eye of mine is the sharpest in all the universe. It sees all."
Your eye sees all Granolah? Can you see past the Heeters feeding you bullcrap too?
Yo, where did Granolah's barely existing personality go? He wss once driven by revenge, and now the opportunity for revenge is right here in front of him & he's acting like he doesn't want it. If revenge is his only noticeable personality trait, what happens when you take it away? You get bland and dry Granolah.
So then Veget- hold on! Thats it! Granolah's name pun is granola because he is meant to be a bland character! I get it now! So all his moves must be cereal puns!
Tumblr media
I never realized how genius this character is!
Detective Vegeta: "A tribe driven to extinction, known for their evolved right eyes... This is starting to sound familiar..." 🕵
Tien?! Oh wait... he said right, not 3rd eye. Jiren?! Oh wait, that's both his eyes... Jaco!? That's both eyes too... I give up.
Granolah's eye can tell that Goku is not using his full power, yet he can't tell he is being fooled by the Heeters. I think he needs new glasses or at least clean the revenge smear off of his monocle.
Granolah casually chats with a Saiyan who is one of the ppl he wants to kill. He would be better if he barely talked and just acted. Granolah should be like Iron Man in "Captain America: Civil War." Not trying to talk, just trying to kill because he is angry and wants revenge.
Goku: "Granolah, we don't work for Freeza & the two of us didn't attack your planet."
Granolah: "I dont care... Your people killed my family."
Boom! Gimme an award!
Back to the chapter 72 colouring book...
Granolah: "Hurry and get on with it. I have no duty to wait for your sake."
Yet you've been waiting all this time for them to arrive, fight them, chat with them, & even waiting for him to transform right now. You got time. You got 3 yrs to waste. You can chat for 10 minutes or so.
Granolah tells Goku that he doesn't have time to wait, then says "It's no skin off my nose to kill you where you stand." Then he waits for Goku to transform... Just kill Goku and be done with it already. Its not like Vegeta can win if Goku can't.
Granolah: "I dont have time for talk."
Goku: "Ok lets fight!"
Granolah: "Ok but, let me tell you about what my eye can do. I'm really proud of it. Mind if I talk a bit? So I sacrificed my life to defeat Freeza, the guy you're working for."
Goku: "What? You don't like Freeza? You're not a bad guy?"
Granolah: "Shut up Saiyan! You'll pay! Fight me!"
Granolah doesn't want to talk about Freeza all of the sudden when Goku implies they both have been tricked. Granolah becomes stupid just so the fight continues. There's a better way to keep them fighting. SHUT UP, GRANOLAH! If he talked less then convoluted stuff like this wouldn't happen.
Granolah yells "Take this!" He powers up instead of doing an attack... Why yell "take this" then power up if you aren't gonna attack right away? You even knocked Goku out of SSG, so now is the perfect time to finish him.
Blah blah blah, Goku goes SSB and they fight, blah blah blah.
Hey look! In my last review I said something about the planet should shake or be in danger from the battle. Looks like Toyo made the planet shake from the battle. Good job. I like this detail. Will it matter later on? Probably not.
Also, ya notice how god ki and god transformations are limited in this chapter? It seem they got too powerful for there to be any stakes. So we see Vegeta in base & SS. Then we see Goku in base, SS, SSG, base, & SSB so that false tension can build. Its smart but the dialogue doesn't compliment this smart tactic.
Aparently Vegeta doesn't care about the fight. Detective mode activate! (🕵) Vegeta standing in that Oozaru footprint looks like he's in Jurassic Park lol. But why did Detective Vegeta have to touch the footprint? He could had just looked at everything when he was high up and had a bird's eye view. Did Detective Vegeta taste the soil & gain knowledge by tasting the past?
Detective Vegeta: "I think I know who he is."
The Heeters said his name is Granolah, dummy. Shouldn't you say "I think I know what happened here." or something like that? Gimmie your detective hat, your trench coat, your bubble pipe, & you magnifying glass! You give detectives a bad name! I'll give this to somebody more deserving, like Jaco, Videl, Krillin, or Hit.
Did ya notice that Vegeta didn't get hit once but Goku who is using UI gets hit multiple times? Vegeta tells Goku to think instead of use UI? Oh yeah, this chapter was to pander to Vegeta fans. Toyo is poorly trying to convey he is equal or above Goku somehow. Like Vegeta mastered his training but Goku hasn't despite having mastered UI as a transformation thingy.
In conclusion, I was right. Freeza still hasn't been seen yet. Show a pic of him in somebody's thought bubble at the very least. This is all happening because if his influence y'all. Still no visual of Freeza yet... Whateva.
This chapter was wack. Too much unintelligent & unreasonable & unrealistic & unnecessary dialogue, plot went nowhere, Goku is being handicapped so the fight can continue, everyone are stupid idiots, Vegeta is being built up to lose his battle or get lucky & win. No image of Freeza still... This was just a very, very boring chapter.
I expect the next chapter to be boring too. Probably won't see Freeza either.
Prediction
Goku got knocked down twice by Granolah, Vegeta decided to fight second, Granolah said he doesn't need to keep Goku alive, & Vegeta told Goku he should stop relying on UI... Sounds like UI is getting nerfed & Goku is gonna need to be saved by Vegeta so that Vegeta can show off his Hakai training in comparison to UI.
