Heya! Just saw your post so I hope you don't mind my fluff related somewhat crossover of Batman and Moon Knight:
In this random AU, Bruce Wayne witnessing the death of his parents was such a traumatic moment that it would spiral to give him DID (his extra personalities being Steven Grant and Jake Lockley from Moon Knight).
Now in present time, each character of the batfamily (of your choice) while doing something together (maybe training perhaps) can't help but each remember fondly about the first time meeting Bruce and eventually finding out and meeting his other personalities as well and how much it was quite a surprise. They even each tell their most fondest memories with Bruce, Steven or Jake, by the end, they don't realize that Bruce Wayne has came back, smiling with Steven Grant and Jake Lockley also feeling happy.
Hope that's okay, thanks and have a great day
Hey! Okay I think I understand the request but in case I don't, feel free to ask again. I have never done cross over stuff before but I love both batman and moonknight so I'm excited to try. They really feel like they fit together so well. I can totally imagine the wild interactions between these men. Anyway without further or do here you go! 😄
        The kids were used to Bruce's changes. Most of them thought of Steven as a second dad. Jake only came out when needed but having a family seemed to mello him out almost like he felt safe with them.
        It had been a rough night for everyone. Gotham just seemed to be falling deeper into the hands of crime lords and maniacs. Dick, Jason, and Tim made their way to the kitchen for a snack before bed.
        “Any of you catch Jake and Bruce arguing again?” Tim asked as Dick grabbed them all some cereal.
        “Nah I got real good at tuning out their bickering. Don't take them so seriously. They will work it out.” Jason says as he shoves a whole huge spoonful cereal into his mouth.
         “Do you guys remember a few Christmases ago when Steven and Alfred worked all morning to set up the living room for a Christmas card photo and Damien puked all over the rug?” Dick said as he finally made himself a bowl. He smiled as he remembered the look on everyone's face. There they all were dressed in their finest and poor Damien just couldn't keep it down.
          “All I remember was the smell. I told him not to eat the ancient candy canes in the decoration box.” Tim said with a chuckle. “I thought you were going to bring up when Jake bought that bike and tried to park it in the greenhouse. I thought Bruce was going to throw that thing in the pool for a second.” Tim added.
         “Oh my God I forgot about that!” Jason interjected as he choked down another large spoonful. “That bike was great. I think that was the first bike I ever rode. Jake can be a pain but he taught me everything I know about bikes. I hope Bruce wasn't jumping down his throat too much tonight. The guy really has a knack for taking the fun out of vigilante work.”
         Everyone knew Jason and Jake were close. When Jason first came back from the dead Jake was the only person he'd let near him. They just understood each other. Jake was the father Jason thought he needed.
         “Jake's alright but Steven will let me talk his ear off all day if Bruce isn't busy. I even got him into RPGs and he helped me rebuild my computer.” Tim commented finishing his bowl of cereal first.
       The boys continued talking about their shared experiences with Bruce, Steven, and Jake. It's an unconventional set up for a family but they all manage to make it work together.
       At some point Bruce realized they hadn't gotten around for bed yet so he looked in the one place he knew he'd find three teen boys, the kitchen. Sure enough they were there all sat on stools, cereal long finished. They were boisterously recounting their favorite moments with their surrogate fathers. If Steven had been in control a tear might have come to Bruce's eye.
       The sun started to rise and eventually they all went to bed. Bruce couldn't help but sleep a little sounder knowing Steven and Jake were loved by his adopted sons. He couldn't ask for a better family.
        It got a little sappy near the end but I hope you enjoyed. It was a really fun AU to write. The idea is super creative and sweet. I hope I did it justice. 💕

Just finished rewatching Death Note, and though it’s completely for my personal pleasure and I would doubt if anyone would read it from start to finish, it’s rant time! *spoilers alert*
First of all, woah. The second watch was truly an experience. Everyone is always talking about ‘I wish I could rewatch … for the first time again.’ and though I’d usually agree, I don’t for Death Note specifically. I don’t really understand why, but in my second watch had a way bigger impact on me than my first. Maybe because I watched it for the first time 4 years ago and I’ve grown now, with different opinions.
ONE THING THAT DIDN’T CHANGE IS MY DISLIKE TOWARDS LIGHT‼️
This being said, the ending where he tried to run away from the police, wounded, made me feel kind of sad for him. He wanted to do good, sure. But after all, anyone who uses bad to solve bad is as bad as the bad they’re trying to solve. Evil cannot be used to fight evil :P
I understand his point of view (somewhat) but I still dislike him. How are you going to watch this man commit genocide, lead his father to his death and feel no remorse, consider killing his sister to save himself (again, no remorse), lead on the angel that is Misa in a cruel way, kill L and Mello (their deaths are enough for me to dislike him but I needed to give more reasons :3) etc etc and still root for him?
Again, no shade to Light lovers. To each their own :P.
Moving on. When I first watched Dn, I was only attached to L. And so, seeing him get killed off and be replaced by Near sparked in me a deep hatred towards that boy. But maturing is realising that Near is the third best character in the show (Right after L and Mello) and that he’s a cutie pie.
And he’s also extremely smart. Correct me if I’m wrong but before L died, he mentionned that if something were to happen to Watari, that he’d erase all the data. That means that Near had none of the informations that L had collected during his investigation.
That also means that he was able to conduct those researches by
1. Not having Light around to examine his attitude or lock him up illegaly
2. No knowledge of what had happened before L’s death
3. He was nowhere near as experienced as L when it came to solving cases (I think…)
He still was able to arrive to the same conclusion as L though, as he mentioned, it wouldn’t have been possible without Mello :)
I also happened to think about Ryuk a lot more and I think he’s the funniest character. My guy dropped his notebook into the human world because he was bored and he landed on a boy who wanted to become God of the new world. And he just went along with it, giggling every now and then. We never truly got a glimpse of his internal monologue, so we don’t know if he agreed with Light or not.
One thing we know, though, is that he sure was amused…
Light is almost as funny. Think about it. If you got a notebook that could kill people, you’d probably get rid of it (I hope so) or AT LEAST ponder on what you would do with it, or if you’d even use it. If you’re a sane human being, your first instinct would be to ‘No way! I could never kill anyone!’.
But Light wasted no time. In only one episode he went from a privileged, smart man to an absolute deranged killer, and that’s hilarious. He didn’t even think about it twice. It’s like he just had a psychotic side to him that just had to wait for the perfect moment to be released.
Also, I knew Matt didn’t have much screen time. But when I rewatched it I noticed that he really DID NOT HAVE ANY! Like they barely add up to thrirty seconds and that sucks cuz he was so cool.
Speaking of cool, MELLO!
He’s so cool like everything about him, his hair his scar HIS STYLE, his aura EVERYTHING. AND I feel like we tend to forget that he is SMART! Like he is smart enough to have been considered a good successor to L and thats crazy to me. It’s sad we didn’t get to fully experience his smartness though.
Same goes for Near. Though it is stated somewhere (I don’t remember where) that he is a little bit smarter than L (but L has a lot more experience, something that cannot be overlooked), I feel like most of the conclusions he’s made appeared from thin air. Did I just not pay attention?
Because at least with L we could see his train of thoughts, his way of thinking and we understood why he came to all those conclusions and decisions.
But with Near it just feels…rushed. (or maybe I js didn’t pay attention…) Like wdym you found that out…It feels like he was more guessing than discovering. Kinda sucks bc he is allegedly smarter than L and I would’ve loved to see it more.
Anyway,
I finished ranting. If you’ve read all this then woah pls get a life (in a nice way <3) .
Death Note amazing anime, amazing openings, amazing aesthetic, amazing characters, AMAZING EVERYTHING‼️

How do you think mello and light would interact?
Okay so the timing of this could not be more amusing to me as I have lately been losing my mind over this exact prospect. My most beloved canon divergence (shared with @dykelawlight ) centers around L striking an amnesty deal and bringing Light back to Wammy’s with him. Mentally, I live there. I know everything that goes on in that house. What I don’t know, my trusted colleague DykeLawlight knows.
L’s reasoning for bringing Light back to Wammy’s is as follows: It’s good for the kiddos to have a real life serial killer to interview. The kids can write essays about him and poke at a nicely defanged mass murder.
L also has… some questioning and tests of his own he’d like to run on his new captive. Now is not the time nor place to talk about this thread.
Mello (and Near) HATE Light on sight. Mello particularly can not stand that someone else is getting so much of his father/god/teacher/casting form’s attention. Mello goes out of his way to make Light’s life a living hell via horrific and subtle psychological torture of the ‘takes one to know one’ variety. In particular, he targets Light’s eatin—
[warning shot is fired at my head, clipping my ear.]
They are normal to each other. Mello is normal toward Light and Mello is normal toward L.
I can not say anything more on the subject lest I be drawn and quartered.

Do you think Light would have
Do you think Light would of…
killed his own family, if he won against Near?
After reading the manga, I thought about a scene. Aizawa was with Near one the phone, after confirming that Light and Takada write notes to each-other. Near of course tells him to stop and that Light would maybe even kill him, if he found out about it, because Light dosent see him as a friend, he just sees Aizawa as "a annoying fly" around him. Later Aizawa sits behind Light and thinks: "Light is kira.. but what is with his family? Is he really planning on turning them towards Kira? But how Kira killed their father and husband.. or is Light planning to.. o-oh my god.." Obviously he is thinking about Light killing his mother and sister. Lets go over it.
Things that speak for it: Light said, that he would kill anyone who knows from the notebook, except Mikami because his eyes are useful. This includes Misa. But why should he kill his family and more importantly how is he planning to get away with it? Well his family knows that Light works together with L and the taskfroce (they dont know the real L is dead) to catch Kira. If everyone of them dies, with Light being the only one alive, it would look more then suspicious. Now his mother would probably not suspect her own son of being Kira, but Light probably wouldnt take any chances. He would try to get rid of everything that could stop him, to create his new, perfect world. But how is he going to do it? Well first write that his sister dies from something natrual, like a car crash. Then a few weeks later, he writes that his mother kills herself. His sister was unstable to that time, so it makes sense that she would carelessly run towards a car, who knows maybe she even killed herself. Then because the mother lost her husband and daughter, she kills herself, unable to deal with the pain. Its a tragic but realistic story. Then once everyone is dead, make a puplic massage, that Kira has finally killed L and will know rule the world. The only people knowing that Light was L or even has contact with him are: His family, the taskforce, Mello and the SPK. Light killed all of them, therefor he can simply say that L is dead, defeated by Kira. We also know that Light is cold, at specailly in the second half. He was ready to kill his own father 13 days after he wrote a name in the notebook, the reason why he didnt kill his sister was not because "he loved" her, but because he cant blame her death on Kira if she dies and he was ready to kill everyone he worked with for over 6 years at the end. Also lets not forget how crazy he was in his finally minutes of life.
Things that speak against it: Like I said, its not likely that his mother would accuse Light of being Kira. Then Light could make up some kind of story of how everyone on the taskforce died and he survived. Then he says either that L is dead too or he says that he decided to leave L, because it got too dangerous for him. Once done, he can still say the world that L is dead and that Kira is law, depending on what he told his family, he just needs to wait a few weeks maybe. That way Light wouldnt have to kill his family, however his family still knows that he worked with L and they probably even know that Light was suspected at one point. Of course aslong as they keep quiet about it, nothing should happen, but is Lights love towards his family bigger then his desire to become god? Obha said, that Light actually was sad when his father died, when Light realized that he maybe needed to kill his sister, he looked depressed into the mirror and got frustrated, in the first half Light was worried about killing his family however this probably changed over the years.
Those are all the things I can think of. So what are your thoughts, do you think Light would of done it? Personally I think yes.
anon. are we talking about the same character? have you read the manga? be honest with me.
light modeled his new world after what he learned from his father and wanted it to be filled with people as kind as his sister and mother. he would NOT kill them as some sick power play.

tagged by @maplefiasco 8 shows to get to know me uhhhh in no particular order!!
tagging (no pressure tho!) ;; @cauldronofmorning @angellspt @spacephrasing @ambrwolf @wesninskijr @rolodextra @zapkilikan and anyone else who wants to do it !
what we do in the shadows: wwdits caters to me so heavily. it captures all of my genders. everyone's hot and fucking each other and they're all so fucking stupid. i've watched it 90 billion times and i still laugh bc the jokes still make me laugh.
midnight mass: we're setting aside my taste in men for a minute here. midnight mass does a really excellent job capturing the more horrifying aspects of growing up as an outsider in a very tight-knit religious community. i've never seen that done in a way that's resonated so much. i talked about this show a lot in therapy. plus okay fine; father skinnyjeans thee vampire [chef's kiss.]
the magicians: idk how to sum up the everything about the magicians in a few sentences. i have an eliot prayer candle lmao, his arc and his friendships and the way he does masculinity are so important to me despite the writing having a few missteps (mind the warnings definitely.) the fandom experience is unlike anything i've ever had, yes derogatorily but also in a really good way--my writing got so good because of the things that i created for this show.
steven universe / sailor moon: i combined them because while they're separately very important to me, it's for a lot of the same reasons and i don't feel right putting one without the other. i'm very saccharine underneath everything, i wanna believe love and friendship can heal anything. i grew up on sailor moon, and i think su would have had the same impact on me if i was the right age.
daredevil: where do i even start :( human disaster matt murdock is just like me fr. foggy nelson is who i wish i was (he also reminds me so much of my husband.) i almost went to law school bc of this fucking show. it's the first time i ever saw two guys crying during an argument bc they love each other that much (nelson v murdock is a treasure of an episode.) i didn't dig s3 as much and i hated the defenders but god the rest of it's so good.
bob's burgers: it's less because i think it's deeply telling and more because it's 100% comfort food. if i'm sick or stoned or sad or trying to find a crowdpleaser, bob's is always my go-to. their family and bob & linda's parenting methods are a lot of what i picture for myself when the time comes.
death note: death note was the thing i was obsessed with as a teenager and while i missed a lot of the point of it, it also is what started making me smarter about media consumption, interpretation, and analysis. mello is also like thee gender of all time.
succession: the latest and greatest "oh jeez that's me." like firstly i love watching shows about terrible rich people but to dig deeper: some of the dynamics hit soooo fucking close. i feel like the portrayal of mental illness and abuse are done almost too well: proceed with caution.
honorable mentions:
buffy the vampire slayer: buffy was the first show i ever got like really, really obsessed with (as well as the first canon i ever tried to make an oc for) but it's almost impossible to recommend for actual viewing bc of how badly it's aged. i didn't rewatch it for the many years, cringed through the last one, and am at permanent hiatus since we've entered the Joyce Is Dying arc which is just like painful to watch on top of the uhhh. joss whedon writing.
archer fx: i don't think archer's necessarily required viewing to get to know me, but i've definitely done some of my best writing for that canon and if you're willing to listen to me talk ad nauseam about archer and cyril's dynamic i'll probably love you forever.

Female Near, and personas used in Death Note
So I've been saying female Near comes off as  Dreamy, Distracted and introverted. Can fake better social skills. Someone people don't take note of until she opens her mouth. Mello thinks of her as kind of a robot.
I've said she's quietly angry, furiously proving herself. She's smart, smart enough to play the game, to know the value of blending. People don't suspect her of being sharp, analytic, vicious, until she opens her mouth and starts talking.
And I realise I've been showing a lot of her through other people's perspectives. And through their perspectives, I've given her a persona.
Death note has a lot of characters using a persona, a mask,  to hide their true self behind. Light has a mask of composure, a distance he wears to be likeable to everyone, perfect son, perfect student, perfect boyfriend. In actuality Light is dramatic, emotional, and kind of dorky. He keeps his real reactions away from the public eye, be it his family, friends, or himself. Most of his emotional moments are depicted with eyes not facing the viewer. The exceptions are not taken well.
Kira is a mask Light loses himself in. He craves public approval. The Yagamis have a theme of sacrifice, and Kira is as much a god Light Sacrifices to Misa in some ways. Their giving their time, trusts and human connections to the altar that is Kira, a justice, a Lie. Light's Persona is one of Lies, and Near defeats him by stripping him of it, and so Light reacts like a Liar, and tries to denounce everything. His self confidence is tied to his image built on lies. He has all the makeings of a Femme Fatale, and a complicated relationship with his father and his ideals.
Misa has a Persona that she has turned into a successful career as a model. Her emotions about her family's deaths, suicidal ideation, or anything that might detract from her persona are for the most part kept carefully behind her smile and bubbly charm. She lets Light matter more than her, she keeps her expressed concerns superficial, she doesn't let the other sides of her show.
L hides. He hides from the world, he hides behind a name, behind a screen, hides behind arrogance, he's above it, removed from it, to the point he doubts his humanity. He's no slouch at acting, quick to throw on a persona in a pinch. He misdirects away from the truth, and when he has you distracted, he tells it. He's often shown eating, in an otherwise empty life. He serves truth and lies, side by side in dialogue. A face and name, L could have given none of those. He could have kept his distance. Like Light, he is childish and hates losing, like Light he sacrificed a friend on the altar of justice. (They sacrificed each other, and paid for it). The irony is L could have won if he accepted a loss. If he hadn't been so fixated on catching Light as Kira, they could have solved the Kira case together and never let Light regain Kira. Kira would have stopped. They could have lived. L valued the truth, Light feared it.
Takada is kind of like Light, in that she cares a lot about image. She wants the status and respect of looking like she has her life together. So she's Kiras spokesperson, a hot guys girlfriend, admired by the fearful populace. A genius. On surface, the kind of woman everyone wants to be.
Mikami lives between his work and his devotion. Sorchio also lives between his work and Family.
We don't get to see a lot of Mello using personas, although I would Imagine Like L, he knows how to wear other masks, and is an actor.. His language use changed when in the Mafia, suggesting he used a different Persona there then amongst Near or other people. His rosary suggests a different personal than public, but as we don't see a lot of him, this is speculation. We do know he is competitive to a ridiculous degree, and despite the ferocity he reacts with, that in itself might be another mask to hide more human weaknesses.
L talks about monsters, and on some level believes himself to be one. Monsters who tell nothing but lies. Interesting words from a man who serves both in the same dish, and is not afraid to resort to dirty tricks. He also refers to monsters as abducting children, stealing dreams and blood. Which may be how he views the title of L.
He's trying to break the pedestal, and it contrasts Light, who instead raises it. L tries to stop hiding behind his mask, where Light tries to strengthen it.
Matsuda, uses little to no duplicidy in his presentation of self, beyond to save himself. He's not super smart or poupluar, what gives him strength, is friendship, tried and true. Its a contrast to a lot of other prominent characters in the series who are smart, lonley and fluid with their identity. Another character who stays steady throughout the series is Soichiro, who has one of the most consistant moral codes in the series. It contrasts his sons, who changes based on the people he surronds himself with. Light reflects like the moon, but based his morals on his fathers.
Near, as a male, wears a literal mask of L to save his life. It's not until after the series that he loses himself in the mask of L. He questioned L as a person, and reshaped the mask of L to fit his ideals instead of the old. But after that, once he restores it to glory, he steps behind it, and loses Near.
Female Near has started wearing her persona earlier, in contrast to Male Near. She lets people assume things about her, see her as dreamy and distracted and robot. Until she talks, until she's ready to speak, and when she does, they're not looking past her, but at her. A little shocked, more than a little offended, about an assumption they perpetrated about her. She would argue with L, she would argue with god, she would argue to anyone whose listening. Where Male Near is a script writer, Female Near gets up on the stage, and breaks from the script expected to follow when the audience least expects it.

Never Grow Up
Tumblr media
The other day when I was listening to a daily podcast that I use for prayer and reflection, the Scripture passage that was read struck me.  It came from Luke 10:21, and it reads like this:
At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
I've read this verse many times, and the second part is familiar.  It speaks to Jesus' efforts to use provocative language, plain-spoken stories, and everyday images to teach the truth of God's love in ways that everyone could grasp.
Even a little kid could get what Jesus was talking about.
But the first line of that verse is one that I can't recall ever seeing or thinking about before I heard it read on that podcast.
At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit...
 I  have to say that it's pretty remarkable to think about Jesus being filled with joy because he was experiencing a Holy Spirit moment that warranted it.  We rarely imagine Jesus this way.
And further, what filled him with joy was that God was doing some incredible inter-generational work regarding the message of God's love and inclusion.
It's no wonder that Jesus once told his followers, "Unless you become like a little child, you'll never fully understand the truth of God's kingdom."
The problem with most of us is that we've forgotten how to see God with childlike joy and enthusiasm.  We've been programmed for lesser things and told they are the best.
Fr. Anthony de Mello once wrote:
Now this is exactly what society did to you when you were a child.  You were not allowed to enjoy the solid, nutritious food of life: work, play and the company of people and the pleasures of the senses and the mind.  You were given a taste of the drug called Approval, Appreciation, Attention, the drug called Success, Prestige, Power.  Having got a taste for these things you became addicted and began to dread their loss.
Ouch.  That lands on most of us, doesn't it?  And it does so because we know that so much of our joie de vi·vre has been muted or banished. After all, we no longer see the world as we did when we were young because we had to grow up.
Just so you know, I'm not advocating for an abdication of your responsibilities here.  So don't impulsively say, "I'm quitting my job, and I'm going to do whatever makes me happy---Pastor Leon said to do it!"
What I'm saying is that if, by growing up, we lose our ability to experience joy, abandon our sense of wonder, and give up on what it means to play, create and enjoy God and the world around us, maybe we shouldn't grow up all that much.
Maybe we should have the faith of a little child, the ability to see God in the ordinary, to find beauty in the broken, and to experience the Holy Spirit with an open mind and heart.
I feel like Jesus would approve this message... with joy.
May it be so for you today and every day from this day.  And may the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you now and always.  Amen.

death note headcanons for father's day, why not:
L knew his birth father when he was very young but has no memories of him
young light feigned indifference to soichiro in order to get him to talk about cases at home
sayu on the other hand went through a phase of refusing to talk to him since he was always gone
when mello is stressed he pretends to talk to his father even though he never knew him
near never viewed roger as a father figure. he always accepted the fact he would never have that
misa was closer to her father than her mother

Hello, I'm glad I found your account, it's fantastic!, (if it's not too much trouble), could you write how the Wammy Boys (L, Near, Mello and if you want Matt) how they would react if their s/o If was pregnant?Sorry, my English is so bad, it's not my favorite subject.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Baby-Daddy Wammy Boys
L Lawliet
Tumblr media
He is so detached, you would think that he would never want to have a family of his own.
Due to his line of career, he doesn't think that having a kid is safe.
He was rather hesitant to become your s/o too.
He is really caring and kind and secretly loves children.
Scenario
"L can you get the cake from on the counter to the table," you called.
"I am busy..." he said in a sing-song voice.
"Please!" you pleaded and he obliged with a sigh.
He casually picked it up and kept it on the table until his eyes came across a layer of cursive written icing on the top.
Roses are red, violets are blue Inside me, there is a tiny you
His heels were stuck on the floor until you waved your hand around his face.
"L? you okay?" He snapped out of his daze and grabbed your shoulders.
"Is it real?" he asked eyes trailing to your stomach, "Is it mine?"
"Of course it's yours," you huffed a bit offended, "are you happy?"
"Happy? I am scared, overjoyed and shivering to my core from elation."
"You will need to make time from your schedule now," you said and he nodded, "also you need to stop eating so much sugar, at this rate you will die of diabetes before the baby is even born."
He completely ignore you and with an odd grin he sat on the couch, "They will be so intelligent and beautiful as their mother, they might even help me with cases, I will get them a lot of toys and we will eat cakes together and..."
His rambling continues for one hour.
Mihael Keehl
Tumblr media
He is delighted, ecstatic, you may even think that he was waiting for this.
He looks like the kind of guy who is very excited to be a father but doesn't even know P of parenting
He is jumping around the room like a mad man, lifting you in his arms he is talking to the non-existent baby-bump.
Scenario
"Mihael," you cooed, "I have a gift for you!"
A very sleepy Mihael poked his head from a plethora of blankets, "for me?"
You giggled at his antics, sleep was the only time he wasn't trying to show his 'I am an Alpha' aura.
"Yep, here you go!" you handed him the framed ultrasound copy with doodles you had made around the corners.
He blinked his eyes to adjust to the lighting and as soon as he did so his eyes widened.
"Oh my god! Is it what I think it is?"
"Yep, it's our baby, 4 weeks old."
He rushed from the duvets and hugged you from the waist, "I am the luckiest man alive!"
Nate Waters
Tumblr media
I am so so so sorry to inform you, this man doesn't like children
I expect his reaction to be anti-climatic.
Scenario
"Y/N you have to open the door, please," he gently knocked.
"You will get mad at me!" you cry out.
"I won't, I promise," he sighed in concern and tiredness.
He could hear your penguin steps towards the door.
You opened the door and turned to face him, "I was feeling sick and my period was late..."
Near immediately knew what was up, but he kept quiet until you completed.
"I am pregnant," you cried out, "please don't leave me-"
"Of course, I won't," he said hugging you, "we will think of something later, but you should rest for now, alright?"
Tumblr media
I feel weird writing this... hope it met your expectations.

Summary: In an AU where L wins the Kira case and Light goes to prison instead of being executed, L gets it into his head that Light should become an executor: because that would see his need for justice and killing done.
Author’s Note: This is actually the first idea I had and first thing I started writing after I finished watching Death Note.I wasn’t sure I was comfortable sharing it with you guys. But I guess I am:)
L’s PoV
L was heading towards… a certain place after the Kira case had been closed for quite some time.
And why he was heading there, he wasn’t entirely sure. It wasn’t as if he owed Yagami Light anything…
Perhaps, L thought, as he now walked into the prison that housed the mass murderer, he was doing this because he wanted to believe if he ever got locked up, someone with his mind would be given a chance like this… or something much better than this idea.
But whatever the reason was, L was walking towards Light’s cell now, to offer him a deal: a deal that had been playing in the back of L’s mind for a long time, even while he’d also been trying to come up with any and all evidence to incarcerate Light.
Finally—after all sunlight faded away and the last seagull silenced itself—L was being led through the massive metal door that would lead him to Light. And L would be facing him by himself. Something that Watari and everyone at Wammy’s House had loudly protested, but L knew that to even get a twenty-seven percent chance that Light would listen to any of this, he would have to go it alone.
L had reassured everyone, of course, that Yagami Light wasn’t one for killing people without his favorite magical notebook. And he knew that he’d be watched on any and all available monitors like a hawk, which was fine.
The Wammy’s boys (Near, Mello, and Matt—perhaps Matt and Mello in particular) had tried to convince L to bring a bomb in with him—one that Light wouldn’t be able to activate on L quickly enough, if he got it away from him, because it was made out of new technologies that Light hadn’t had the benefit of seeing—that he could throw at Light if the man pulled a fast one on him, and then make a run for the door.
But as L thought that there was a thirty-seven percent chance that that would actually cause more harm for him than good, he’d decided to use his intellect here as he always did… and pray to any god that might exist that Light was off his game after these few years (even though that would make this incredibly boring).
L pushed the door open, and was met with the sight of a lot of orange, brown, and grays: dull, fall colors, that had lost any and all shine. Honestly, what had he even been expecting? Perhaps this had been a mistake…
“Well, if I haven’t earned a visit from the one and only Ryuzaki,” Light sang, looking up from the Bible he’d been reading, the moment L crossed over the threshold. And it didn’t escape L’s notice that Light didn’t call him “L”, which clearly meant that he wasn’t seeing this as a victory against him—as it clearly wasn’t that—but it also meant that Light was beyond bitter here. L wondered how that would make the rest of their interaction play out, as he crossed the room and sat in the table across from Light. “To what do I owe the pleasure? Are you here to finally tell me how good orange looks on me?” In some ways, he was perceptive as always, L supposed.
“While I would, perhaps, love to rub it in your face again, that I beat you—because yours surely was the best case that I have yet won,” and here L locked eyes with Light to remind him that he had won, and it would be foolish to think that he could try and turn the tables right now, “once of doing that was more than enough. Not everyone is as narcissistic as you are, Light. No… I’m here for… sympathetic reasons, oddly enough. And you don’t have to believe me about that, but it is the truth.” And it was clear Light must not have believed it for a second, because he’d scooched his chair back from L’s furiously, the moment the words had left his lips.
He’d moved the seat back, but hadn’t gone to stand up. And that was smart on his part—Light had always been so smart—because if he had, L had no doubt that, quite ironically, all sorts of police and guardsmen would be spilling in this very moment to be giving Light a lethal injection.
So, it seemed that even in prison—where so much was ripped away from one—of course, Yagami Light had found a way to hold onto his careful reactions. This was very good.
L could respect that.
“I don’t believe you!” Light hissed, as some of the old fire returned to the young man. And his pupils dilated, and there was certainly a maniac look to them, but no red.
And L was taken aback to find that he somehow missed the red.
“All you ever wanted was to solve the Kira case more than anything else! It was just another trophy to add to your case! The most impressive one of all, in fact! And you didn’t care who you had to throw under the bus to get there, or if you had to act like Kira himself to achieve your goals. So, why would you start caring now? Odds say that you don’t.”
L could have said something to that, like, “How funny it is, that you now start talking about odds, when I always thought that that was my forte,” he knew. But the truth was… he didn’t have the time for their game, even though it had once been his favorite one of all.
A new technology had just been unveiled that could recognize faces with seventy-five percent accuracy one-hundred thousand miles away. And L just knew that it was at once going to be nuclear warfare, if he didn’t get out there and explain why seventy-five percent still wasn’t accurate enough and would leave too many innocent civilians murdered in cold blood and destitute. So, if Light wasn’t going to be interested in the deal L had to offer him here, he really couldn’t care less.
As it was, he was missing tea time right now, anyway, and he quite liked tea time.
Examining his nails in a very bored manner, L continued on with, “Like I said, Yagami Light, you don’t have to believe me. But I have an idea… since we both once loved our game with each other so much, how about we play another one together right now? Give me one good reason as to why I should give you an opportunity, and shouldn’t leave you to rot her for eternity, like you so rightly deserve?”
Light seemed to withdraw into himself at that… and he looked so very small. And as he did, L found that maybe he was finally truly feeling the sympathy he’d told Light that he had from the onset here.
It must not have been easy, L imagined, dealing with the world’s greatest ice queen in the world, who lived behind such an impenetrable fortress.
Nor must it have been easy to try and look like you had something to gamble with, when everything had been taken away from you.
The gears were clearly turning in Yagami Light’s head now. And L wondered if when they were done spinning, if he would actually hear some sort of fantastical truth from the man, or another lie. Surely the latter, since if there was one thing Yagami Light didn’t do, it was tell the truth.
Finally, Light looked up at L with sorrowful eyes. And L imagined that everyone who was watching this scene unfold with him right now, was also waiting with bated breath to see what the serial killer would have to say.
“Did you know my father once tried to kill my cat, L?” Light asked.
And there was his name, “L”, again. So, Light clearly must have thought he could win this one. And L thought he must have been lying, since he was speaking of something so traumatic far too matter-of-factly right now.
But, then again… Light was calling Soichiro “father” as opposed to “dad” for once. And sometimes trauma victims did speak matter-of-factly to try and keep their emotions at bay.
Hmm… L tried not to give anything away here, but Light definitely have L wondering if he’d missed something important in the Kira investigation. And L didn’t know if that was good or not. He had asked for this—and perhaps had even wanted a battle he had chosen, as opposed to the one he now had to partake in for necessity—but was it really a good idea to have a battle of wills with Yagami Light again?
No matter what he thought, L knew the best thing was to try and play it all off, of course. “No, I was not aware of that, Kira. It didn’t come up in anything I researched about you in our time together. If this is true, I assume your family kept it under wraps to protect your father’s reputation? Do tell me about it.”
“Yep. That’s exactly it,” Light allowed, and he was looking at his forearms that rested on the table now, as if he was lost in thought. Lost in his memories, maybe more accurately. So, perhaps, there was some truth to all of this, after all.
L truly hadn’t come here expecting to feel anything for Yagami Light today, but he found he was doing exactly that, and he hated himself for it.
He would not again be the man on a rooftop, looking at who he believed to be his future killer with regret, as he heard bells ring in the distance. He would not.
“It was late one night… Dad was tired. And maybe a little drunk… This was the only cat we ever had, by the way. An orange furball that Sayu had begged that Mom and Father let us have. Eventually, they relented. Anything, for cute Sayu, of course. And I felt the same way. But… it had stomach problems, and hairballs all the time. Mom cleaned it up as best she could. I helped, too. But Father hated this about the thing.
“One night… I guess the stress of everything became too much for him, and he was chasing Aki, the cat, through the house, saying he was going to kill her, and was throwing coat-hangers at her… until Sayu and I intervened. But mainly it was me. I don’t know if it would have gone further than the coat-hangers, if Father’s two little kids hadn’t tried to stop him then, but…
“Anyway, Dad never had a psychotic break like that ever again, so we all just dropped it...”
The way Light had told the story… it mostly seemed true to L. And he hated that after once having said that there was never a time that Light told the truth, that he would now ven entertain that notion.
He also despised that he now thought it made some sense, then, that Yagami Light would go serial killer, since he’d had the trauma of seeing his father attack an animal… and seeing as how he couldn’t really get any help, as mental illness was so stigmatized in Japan.
But Light did not need to know any of these things from L, of course. All he needed to know was that he had passed the test.
And for Yagami Light, who had only ever wanted to get the best grades and be society’s greatest being—and to be a “god”—surely that would be enough.
“Light… what if we put your desire for justice—and death, to an extent—to practical use? What if you became an executor, instead of wasting away here?”
And the moment the words had left his mouth, L wished he could take them back. Because certainly Kira would object that he wasn’t a killer and never had been.
But instead, Light just dabbed at his eyes some—had he started crying?—and shook his head as if he were truly lost, “…If you think that’s the best thing for me to do… I guess I’ll do it. Clearly, I don’t know what’s right, and you’re wiser than I could ever be. So, when do I start?”
L meant to fill Light in then, that it wouldn’t be right away.
No. Some trust would have to be built first, before they let Kira anywhere near lethal ingredients or people he would put in the electric chair, of course.
But L couldn’t find the words.
He was, one, feeling too much guilt, somehow, by what had just transpired….
And two, finding himself almost aroused at the idea of Light wielding such power, but using it rightly this time.
“Watari will get you the information. He’ll be in touch.”
And L headed back through the large metal door, without another look towards Yagami Light.
He had once thought it held Light’s fate… but he was starting to realize that perhaps it held his own, too.
And if he was intelligent, he would never see the man again.
But had he ever truly been intelligent?
L had to ponder that now, when he knew without a shadow of a doubt… he would be seeing Kira again.

Continued discussion from this post, because it was getting long!
@eecmidford said:
It’s not rude at all to ask! I’ve read the manga a few times, but I do watch the anime a lot more. That’s why I don’t talk about the manga very much. I’m familiar enough with it, I just happen to know the anime WAY more. I guess that explains why we keep disagreeing😅
From what we see in the anime, I honestly don’t get the feeling that Light’s relationships with Sayu and Sachiko are that deep. We see surface-level interactions like Light’s mom bringing him apples, and besides that it’s mostly him sitting around listening while they relentlessly praise him. I think Light sees people in terms of what they can do for him, with very few exceptions. He’s also incredibly sexist and misogynistic, so the way he sees Sayu for instance wouldn’t be “Sayu Yagami, my sister,” it would be more like “Sayu, a girl who is related to me.” His mom would be “mom, an older girl who is related to me.” I’d go so far as to say his relationship with Misa is even deeper than his relationships with either his mom or his sister, because at least with Misa he can be truer to his real self (Kira, as I believe “Kira” as we see him in the warehouse is the closest to the “real” Light we ever get to see). He likes his mom and sister because they praise him and they don’t get in his way too much, but I don’t think he cares that much about them and I definitely don’t think he loves them. I’m still not totally convinced he loved his father, but you’ve got me conceding that he did care about him.
(Side note: I know in the manga Ryuk teases Light about how he secretly loves Sayu when she gets kidnapped, or maybe he says “care about” instead of “love,” I honestly don’t remember…but idk, I just don’t buy that? I don’t have any deeper reasoning there, I just simply don’t buy it.🤷🏻‍♀️But definitely share any evidence to the contrary if you have it!)
“He’s hurt, but can’t afford to be hurt” is a perfect way of putting that. That’s Light to a T. I would like to take it one step further and say that Light feels he doesn’t deserve to be hurt. Other people can feel pain, but not the God of the New World.
Finally, two more questions. I know I keep bothering you with new questions, but YOU KEEP MAKING ME THINK ABOUT THIS STUFF SO IT’S YOUR FAULT:
1. If Soichiro had survived, what if any decisions do you think Light would have made differently toward the end of the series?
2. If Matsuda had taken the eye deal, would he have killed Mello? (I’m pretty sure I know how you’re going to answer this, but I’m curious so…)
That makes sense! My weakness is definitely my incapability to look at the anime and go “this is a work worth analyzing in its own merit”. When I talk about Death Note, I am always referring to the manga version. A lot of it applies to the anime as well, but I truly have trouble seeing it as its own standalone story so characterizing the anime characters at face value is not my forte.
And yes, the anime absolutely cut out pretty much... every single scene about Light and his family dynamic, it’s kind of insane to me. I have compiled a list of what’s missing and why it is significant here. There is also a very good post about Light and Sayu here. I’m sorry that this is a lot of hefty reading, I have a hard time condensing the evidence down to few words, so it’s easier to link the proper elaborations that have been done before. (The “Ryuk’s Notebook” pages in HTR13 are obviously humorous in tone, but there was well Sayu is listed at the top of Light’s priority pyramid (below himself) under “people he loves”.)
But yeah, our views of Light are fundamentally hard to weigh against each other in detail because we disagree who he is at baseline. In the end, I must admit that I just don’t agree with anything you’ve said in the paragraph about how he relates to family >_> Sorry!!
As for the questions...
1. He definitely wouldn’t have been so callous in using Takada for the investigation, that’s for sure. Otherwise, this is a subject I really need to think longer about because “Soichiro does not die” alters the situation so much. I am pretty sure I have an ask about this in my drafts so I will put that brainpower to use.... soon.
2. Matsuda would have killed Mello - he does a lot of reckless things to prove his worth and he is the most sympathetic to Kira’s “criminals should die for the peace of others” ideology. He wouldn’t exactly feel good about it, but he’d have written his name with little hesitation.

Death Note - Tsugumi Ohba & Takeshi Obata Part 2 ALL THE STARS/5
Jot-it-down-as-it happens commentary wherein I mention L way too much.
Commentary:
-Aaah, my Wammy children, my heart settles a little.
-Straight off, the contrast of Mello being outside with people and Near preferring to stay indoors alone, poetry, art, majestic.
-Omfg, characters like these are why I have trust issues.
-Oh! Near is standing upright! I don’t know why I’m surprised!
-Man, the post-L DN world would have been unbearable if I didn’t love Near so much.
-Isn’t it ironic that Light dies at around the same age as L, and Near beats him at around the same age as when he got L.
-Honestly, it’s kind of cathartic seeing someone having that genuine, deeply emotional reaction to L’s death like Mello does.
-I’m seeing the pattern that I like in fiction of “If this hadn’t happened, then that wouldn’t happen, and then that other thing wouldn't happen” that makes every single action matter. It’s pretty obvious in the first part, but it carries through to the second. Even with Near starting his own investigation independent of L, if L hadn’t narrowed down the suspects and if Light hadn’t thrown us into the Yotsuba arc and if Higutchi hadn’t been caught, the police officer wouldn’t have had the lead that would tip off Near etc. Everything is connected and Near wouldn’t have won if L hadn’t himself solved the case first.
-Seriously low-key high-key bitter that we haven’t seen a manga accurate live action attempt at Near.
-Near’s face is so done with Light from the moment he calls and he hasn’t even talked to him yet, I love my child.
-The world might burn and my beloved child Near will still go, “This is very interesting…”
-Light is s u f f e r i n g, and I love seeing his caring side.
-Yes, boys, Mello has a missile, as you do.
-Near has intense, determined, sharp eyes, he has hard eyes, discerning eyes, he sees into your soul and doesn’t like it.
-Aw, Light admires his father so much.
-Low-key loving that Light’s fall was partially not at all about him. Like, Mello really went, “I don’t give a shit for this guy, I just want to beat Near and he’s a fair target.”
-You’re always fighting against L, babe, the first pages said so.
-Mello casually chatting with the US President, as you do.
-I understand L was the world’s greatest detective and commanded police forces, but my God, the US President is calling him, wow.
-You know what. I know it’s a truth universally acknowledged that we were robbed of a day in the life of L and Light in handcuffs and I agree, it’s one of the greatest crimes in creative content, but I’d also want to see a day in the life of Misa and Ryuk bc I can’t get over the panel of Misa telling him to help her clean up.
-Is there a more compellingly complicated dynamic than L and Light’s, I don’t think so, I don’t think so.
-Sidoh with his little cheat sheet of rules, I can’t.
-Oh, Light thought Matsuda would get the eyes, not Soichiro. Now I feel bad for him. If it was all too many unknown variables for L in the first part, it’s all too many unknown variables for Light now.
-I randomly did a little cry at the name “L.” This is going great. Everything’s great.
-Honest to God, Mello looks like a satisfied mean cat.
-Oh, Light, bb, you’re terrible, but I feel for you seeing you having a meltdown like this.
-I wasn’t sure in the anime, but in the manga I really do think that Light genuinely mourns his father.
-”Whoopie” - omg Sidoh you fluffball <3.
-Near is the personification of “srsly?”
-My boy Near has sinister eyes, I love him.
-There’s a gentleness from the SPK to Near.
-Oh, Near inherited L’s funds! Good to know.
-He’s at war with governments! Near! N E A R !
-The enemies to lovers ships in DN basically write themselves, eh?
-Yeah, guys, listen to Near, why are you pointing a gun at a criminal with actual kills, that’s like sooooo rude. /sarcasm
-I love Mello and Near’s interactions.
-Mello has a gun and Near has a robot with a gun, I cry.
-Honest to God, I think Near understands Mello so deeply.
-”Dear Mello.” Fucking Near, man.
-All I’m saying is, Near has a question mark bubble when Mello gives him information in return, so he wasn’t expecting it, so this whole-ass boy allowed Mello to get in just to get the picture.
-Look at Near's delighted smile, I cannot.
-But Near cornered Light so smoothly.
-Near has no time for Light’s bullshit, my child ain’t fucking around.
-You can practically hear Near’s mind going ‘eheheheheheeee.’
-Light really be like “Just let me kill a Wammy boy, any Wammy boy!”
-My two boys worked together to get Mogi?!?! Look at them, they’re such a little team, ugh, I hate them (affectionate).
-Near emotes very much.
-We can safely assume that L’s fortune is just infinite at this point. He could have vacationed in space. Maybe he did vacation in space.
-”Near is a formidable foe,” YES LIGHT, FINALLY!
-I really do feel bad for the Task Force, they’ve been through so much with Light vs Kira just to discover that Light is Kira…
-It’s funny, I see L as lying and Near as bluffing when Near is very clearly lying as well, idk.
-The second arc of the anime is like… the Sparknotes of the manga. Affectionately speaking.
-Oh, Matsuda, you’re so ride or die for Light. Oh, Matsuda.
-Aw, L was Near and Mello’s idol? I figured it was so for Mello, but it’s sweet to see Near saying so.
-I’m sorry, but this draws an even straighter line between the L arc and the Near/Mello arc. Like, yes, Near wants to catch the mass murderer and Mello wants to beat Near, but on a personal level Kira dared to defeat and off their idol and BITCH IS GOING DOWN. I’ve always contemplated to what extent L acts as the indirect orchestrator of the second arc and whether the successors were even remotely part of his plans, a worst case scenario, whether in the end it’s still L that Light’s fighting against, through Near.
-Say what you want about the Wammy boys, none of them ever forget their please, sorrys and thank yous.
-Look at how out of hand things have gotten for Kira tho. His ideal world is bigger than him now, and difficult or impossible to control. It’s not entirely his anymore.
-Do you ever think of how L partially built up Kira and then Near destroyed him.
-My son is ALONE in New York?!
-”L will not be happy if we do that”?? “It would be an insult to L, who entrusted those who came after him with this case”?? Oh bb. I know past-manga it became canon that Near never even saw L, but it really doesn’t come off like that in the manga.
-It’s like L is threaded through it all. At first I was like, why did the anime end with a vision of L, the manga doesn’t seem to be that, but the more I read, the more it makes sense.
-Hahahaha, “first we must rub their faces in evidence and make them taste the misery of their defeat,” oh my God, Near.
-It’s missing L times on both sides I see, eh, Light?
-That’s such a cool panel with Near ~commanding the screens.
-My bb is decorating a Christmas tree, oh my heart, I cry.
-The fact that Commander Rester is on his knees and watches as Near expresses himself through the Lego thingies is, ugh, I love them. It’s like L created a safe space for the Task Force, and the SPK creates a safe space for Near.
-Hideki Ryuga, haha, what a throwback.
-I’m sorry, but Light Yagami will always be a multitasking king.
-The Wammy kids sure do love their handcuffs.
-”Forgive me,” Mello tells Matt, oh bless your heart.
-Oh, Mello.
-The building tension as we inch closer to the scheduled meeting is awesome.
-I love how Light doesn’t bat an eyelash at anyone’s appearance or mannerisms, like, ‘cool, yeah, idgaf unless I can use it.’
-”You have no right to be wearing L’s mask” - Light, your fanboying is showing.
-Oh Light, I don’t want to see your demise.
-Another reason I love Near’s win is that it isn’t bc Light was outwitted. Someone else made a mistake and Light again didn’t take into account that humans have wills outside of his own. Whether you call this luck or chance, it’s still perfectly in theme. It was by chance that Light got the notebook, by chance that he met Naomi, that Rem came to love Misa and did Kira’s bidding etc. It’s been chance all along, sprinkled among the machinations and calculations of perfectly prepared geniuses.
-”You are far below L” - Light, lad, even in your moment of perceived ultimate victory you’re fanboying, what is this.
-Cocky, self-assured Light sure is pretty tho.
-I’d have doubted Gevanni’s skills to copy the death note overnight had I not been convinced that such a feat is possible by Neal Caffrey.
-”Mr. Shinigami, nice to meet you. I’m Near.” ASJFDSDFADSG.
-Despite Near being Near, I don’t doubt for a second that he feels sorry for Mello’s death.
-”Too bad,” lol, Near, that’s one step away from saying “Shucks for you, Light.”
-Yes, Mello was the MVP, he saved all of your asses.
-”Let’s see you talk your way out of this one” - Lmfao, Near, the sass!
-Tbf, it was Near, Mello AND L that defeated Kira, not just Near and Mello.
-”To pursue your happiness without getting in the way of others, while respecting the rights of others, that is the way humans should lead their lives.” I mean. Yes, Light.
-Matsuda is crying :(.
-Oh, this is so ugly. It’s always ugly, in all iterations. Oh, Light.
-Shut uppp, Near eating chocolate, I cry.
-I also think it’s wishful thinking, Matsuda. It doesn’t track that Near would use the notebook to control Mikami. It goes against everything he’s stood for, he didn’t even know the pages work when ripped, and he has the notebook out there where anyone can inspect it if they wish to do so. Plus, as per the rules, apparently a person with the Shinigami eyes *can’t* be killed by a death note.
-Obha said, “Misa and Sayu WHO?”
-It is with a heavy heart that I conclude this manga, but I do like that it ended on a positive note for Near and the Task Force - cooperating again, Near surrounded by more toys than ever and still with the SPK.

How I Letterboxd #13: Erika Amaral.
Film sociologist Erika Amaral on the blossoming of Brazil’s women filmmakers, the joys of queuing for the movies, the on-fire Brazilian Letterboxd community, and the sentimental attachment of her entire nation to A Dog’s Will.
“It is hard to produce art without institutional support and it is very complicated to produce art during this tragic pandemic.” —Erika Amaral
In the wide world outside of English-language Letterboxd, Brazil occupies a particularly fervent corner. Sāo Paulo-based feminist film theorist Erika Amaral has connected with many other local film lovers through her Letterboxd profile, and for anyone with an interest in Cinema Brasileiro, her lists are an excelente place to start.
From her personal introduction to Brazilian film history, to her own attempts to fill gaps in her Latin American cinematic knowledge, Erika’s well-curated selections are a handy primer on the cinema of the fifth-largest country in the world, and its neighbors. These lists sit alongside her finely judged academic deep-dives into filmmakers such as Luis Buñuel, Glauber Rocha and Sarah Bernhardt.
Endlessly fascinated by how “the history of cinema is all intertwined”, Erika has also written on Jia Zhangke for Rosebud Club, is an Ana Carolina stan, enjoys collecting films directed by women featuring mirrors and women, and, like all of us, watched many remarkable movies during quarantine.

Suzana Amaral (left, rear) with cast and crew on the set of her film ‘A Hora da Estrela’ (Hour of the Star, 1985).
Olá, Erika. Please give our readers a brief introduction to your brilliant Introduction to Brazilian Film History list. I’m so happy to see this list getting popular! I’m a sociologist interested in film and gender studies. It’s been four years since I started studying Brazilian film history but my passion for film is much older. I tried to combine those two aspects in this list; films that are meaningful to me, historically relevant films, and historically relevant films erased from film-history books, for instance, those directed by women. The main purpose of my list is to highlight Brazilian women filmmakers’ fundamental contributions to Brazilian cinema.
I listed some absolute classics such as Hour of the Star by the late director Suzana Amaral, and other obscure gems such as The Interview, by Helena Solberg, which is a short feature released in 1966 alongside the development of Cinema Novo. Solberg’s work was hidden for decades. No-one knew about it. In Brazil, especially in the field of film studies and feminist theories, we are experiencing the blossoming of public debates, books being released, and film festivals that look specifically into films such as Solbergs’s and [those of] many other women directors, including Adélia Sampaio, the first Black female director to release a feature film in Brazil in 1984, Amor Maldito. We need these debates on Letterboxd as well, so I wrote this list in English.
As a representative of the passionate Brazilian community on Letterboxd, can you provide some insight into the site’s popularity where you live, especially for those of us who have not learned Brazilian Portuguese? I feel at home using Letterboxd. Everywhere I see Brazilian members posting reviews in both Portuguese and English. It’s a passionate community. It’s directly related to Twitter where Brazilian cinephiles are so active and productive, always sharing film memes (and even Letterboxd memes). Many content creators are using both Letterboxd and Twitter to showcase their podcasts, classes and film clubs. I once started a talk at a university for film students mentioning that my Masters research project came into life when I watched Amélia, showing my mind-blown Letterboxd review in the presentation. I follow many of those students now and it is so good to be connected. Brazilian Film Twitter and [the] Brazilian Letterboxd community are on fire!

Alexandre Rodrigues as Buscapé in ‘City of God’ (2002), directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund.
When uninitiated cinephiles think about Brazilian cinema, City of God is most likely top of the list. It’s the only Brazilian film to be nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards (despite co-director Kátia Lund being shut out!) and it’s the only Brazilian film in IMDb’s Top 250. After nearly 20 years, is it fair for City of God to represent Brazil? Of course, it is fair for City of God to represent Brazil! The only problem is if we think all Brazilian cinema is exclusively City of God. The film is entertaining, well-directed, has a great cast, but it has some flaws—for example, the aestheticization of violence and misery in Brazil, which scholar Ivana Bentes calls the “cosmetics of hunger”. Even so, it is a great film and it captivated Brazilian and international audiences. We shouldn’t limit any country to only one or two films.

Selton Mello and Matheus Nachtergaele in beloved Brazilian comedy ‘O Auto da Compadecida’ (A Dog’s Will, 2000).
Several Brazilian films have stunningly high ratings on Letterboxd, giving them a place on many of our official lists. This includes A Dog’s Will, which is in the top ten of our all-time Top 250. On Letterboxd, A Dog’s Will reviews are cleanly divided into two camps: Brazilians (who absolutely love it) and everyone else (who fail to understand its popularity). What drives this home-team spirit? People truly love A Dog’s Will! It’s funny, has a fantastic rhythm, and it references many aspects of Brazilian culture, especially regarding north-eastern Brazilian culture. It was shown both as a film and as a miniseries infinite times on the largest and most popular television channel in Brazil. I can’t help mentioning that A Dog’s Will portrays Jesus Christ as a black man and Fernanda Montenegro as Brazil’s patron saint, Nossa Senhora Aparecida. It’s a brilliant moment for Matheus Nachtergaele, one of the greatest Brazilian actors ever.
Can you offer us a ‘Gringo’s Guide to A Dog’s Will’? I love the idea of a ‘Gringo’s Guide to A Dog’s Will’! You need to have good subtitles. The beauty of A Dog’s Will is that it is regional but it was made to be understandable to all of Brazil. You are going to need subtitles that [cover] the expressions, slang and proverbs—not mere translations. I would recommend watching some other films from north-eastern Brazil; Land of São Saruê, Love for Sale and Ó Paí Ó: Look at This. This can help you understand other social and cultural dimensions of Brazil beyond, for instance, City of God. A Dog’s Will is a movie that we would watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon with the family, so we have a strong sentimental attachment to it.

Leonardo Villar bears the weight of a cross in ‘The Given Word’ (1964).
Religion plays an important role in Brazilian cinema—for example, one of the few Brazilian films to win the Palme d’Or is the masterful The Given Word. Is this connection a part of what makes Brazilian cinema so potent for the local community? Religious symbolism and religious beliefs are extremely significant in Brazilian cinema. Its presence in cinema seems to address our daily challenges, rituals, history, but not always apologetically—as you can see in the despair of Zé do Burro in The Given Word. Religion does not seem to help him. There’s nowhere to run. The spiritual belief, as well as the cross itself, is a weight on his shoulders.
So you see, religion in Brazilian cinema is so potent because we can think beyond it, we can understand how people relate to their beliefs and how sometimes religion can fail a person. That’s what happens when a priest falls in love with a local girl (The Priest and the Girl), when a curse falls upon a man who turns against his people (The Turning Wind), when we teach fear and sin to young girls (Heart and Guts), when religion becomes a determining way of life that does not pay back efforts (Divine Love), when we accept the possibility of going against religious institutions (José Mojica Marin’s, AKA Coffin Joe, films).
We have all these movies fascinated by religion and how it creates meaning in our society. This is just from Christianity, because if we think of African and Indigenous heritage, we have another whole dimension of films to reflect upon, such as Noirblue and the documentary Ex-Pajé.
We have some Brazilian films in our Official Top 100 by Women Directors list, including The Second Mother, which sits in the top five with City of God. Who are some overlooked female Brazilian filmmakers that you want to celebrate and put on our map? Undoubtedly Juliana Rojas and Gabriela Amaral Almeida. They’re both on the horror scene and their work is astonishing. I strongly recommend Hard Labor and Rojas’ latest film Good Manners (if you are into werewolves). I can’t even pick one for Almeida—The Father’s Shadow and Friendly Beast are awesome. Beatriz Seigner’s The Silences—filmed in the frontier between Brazil, Colombia, and Peru—is really impactful. Glenda Nicácio’s films, co-directed with Ary Rosa, are among my favorite recent Brazilian films. Watch To the End immediately!
Tumblr media
Eduardo Coutinho’s ‘Twenty Years Later’ (1984).
Brazilian documentarian Eduardo Coutinho has not one, not two, but three of his films in the Official Top 100 Documentaries list, including the all-time number one Twenty Years Later. Can you describe Coutinho’s significance in Brazil? Coutinho is a monument! Coutinho is an institution! Coutinho is everything. His works are of strong political importance, as you can see in Twenty Years Later. A movie he was making in 1964 was interrupted by the dictatorship installed in Brazil, and the main actor and activist, João Pedro Teixeira, was murdered, then his wife Elizabeth Teixeira had to flee and change her identity.
The documentary follows Coutinho and his crew looking for the actors from his movie from twenty years before. Later, his works developed many different tones and formats as you can see in Playing, an experimental portrayal of real women and their personal experiences side-by-side with actresses representing their real-life events as if in a play. Playing was one of the mandatory films to be analyzed for [my] Film School entrance exam, so I had to watch it a million times in 2017. His works are profound studies on Brazilian people and culture—piercing, but also delicate.
Contemporary documentaries are also doing well; Petra Costa’s latest, The Edge of Democracy, was nominated for an Oscar, and Emicida: AmarElo – It’s All for Yesterday was briefly Letterboxd’s highest-rated film late last year. How are these docs tapping into the zeitgeist? Those are both very different films. Emicida is part of a strong and structured movement against racism, against the marginalization of Black people, against limiting the access to art and culture to certain social groups, which is a common practice in the history of this country. Petra Costa’s documentary is another form of reflection on contemporary politics but in a melancholic tone since, recently in Brazil, we have been facing political storms such as the impeachment of ex-president Dilma Roussef, the imprisonment of ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (who has recently been declared not guilty), and rising far-right politicians. Not to mention another of our losses, the still-unsolved killing of Marielle Franco, a Black and lesbian political representative. These films have helped us face these difficulties and try to gather some hope for the future.

Bárbara Colen (center) and villagers in ‘Bacurau’ (2019).
How has Brazil’s cinema industry been affected by the one-two punch of the pandemic on top of ongoing social and political issues? And, can you talk a bit about how the acclaimed Cannes-winner Bacurau shocked the nation two years ago, and in what ways the film confronted these problems? This question is challenging because there’s so much happening. At this moment, we have 428,000 deaths [from] Covid and we are still mourning the Jacarézinho favela massacre in Rio de Janeiro. We have very troubled political representatives that are not fighting Covid in an adequate way to say the least, and we have had major cut downs in the cultural sector since, in Brazil, a lot of artistic and cultural projects are developed with governmental incentives. It is hard to produce art without institutional support and it is very complicated to produce art during this tragic pandemic.
Right before this chaos, we had Bacurau. Actually, I have a pleasant anecdote about my experience with Bacurau. Everybody was talking about how it was going to premiere at a special event with the presence of its directors. We had some expectations regarding the premiere because it was going to be free of charge and it would take place at the heart of São Paulo, the Avenida Paulista, in an immense theater.
We arrived at 1pm to form a line and people were there already. I discovered through Twitter that the first boy in line was hungry so I gave him a banana. I had brought a lot of snacks. The line was part of the event, and it got so long you couldn’t believe it. It was great to see so many friends and people gathered to see a movie—and such an important movie! There weren’t enough seats for everyone but they exhibited the film in two different rooms so more people could enjoy it.
I love everything about that day and I think it helps me to have some perspective on cinema, culture, politics and what we can accomplish by working collectively—people uniting to fight dirty politicians, people joining forces to fight social menaces, generosity, empathy, fight for justice and the power of the masses.

The life of 17th-century nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz is explored in María Luisa Bemberg’s ‘Yo, la Peor de Todas’ (I, the Worst of All, 1990).
Would you like to highlight some films from your neighboring countries? I have been watching some fascinating films from South America. Bolivian filmmaker Jorge Sanjinés has an extensive filmography and his films were the first to portray characters speaking Aymara. I really like his Ukamau. I also love Argentine director María Luisa Bemberg’s films, such as I, the Worst of All. I’m currently studying Jayro Bustamante’s La Llorona, from Guatemala. I have no words to say how incendiary this film is. You’ll have to watch it for yourself!
Who are three Brazilian members that you recommend we all follow? Firstly, I recommend you follow my beautiful partner in crime and cinema, Pedro Britto. Secondly, a fantastic painter and avid researcher of Maya Deren and Agnès Varda, my adored friend Tainah Negreiros. Finally, I recommend you follow Gustavo Menezes, who is the author of many excellent lists [about] Brazilian cinema. He’s also the co-founder of a streaming platform called Cinelimite, which everyone should take a look at.

Um, I dunno if you've done this before, but if not, I'd like to put in a small request. How do you think the Whammy boys (+Light, although if you don't want to, feel free to leave him out haha) would do if they found out their kid had homicidal tendencies? Perhaps even if they were hospitalized for said tendencies? I really enjoy your HCs, so I was curious as to your interpretation of this scenario. (Obvi, if you dont want to, feel free to ignore this haha)
Hello Dear Anon!😊🖤 Interesting ask!! I tried my best (TBH, This was hard! lol). Also, thank you for your kind words! I’m so sorry this took me so long to get to!
L
Worries that growing up being exposed to the cases L works on played a part in this.
Wonders about others in his biological family and if anyone else had similar tendencies. Sometimes it’s suggested that this could be genetic, but L doesn’t know his genetics. (Not that it would help, but may give him insight into what his child is up against.)
Gets them anything the need. There is no cost to large. He wants them to have every opportunity to live a healthy life without being plagued by these tendencies. He will do anything to help his child.
Mello
Blames himself. This is his fault somehow. He never wanted to kill anyone, but he was certainly willing to take lives if it helped him accomplish his goals. He worries that this trait was inherited or maybe Mello’s personality just rubbed off on them.
Worries that they remember the violent lifestyle of their early childhood. Mello stopped his old ways, but thinks the child might have been affected by this.
If they were hospitalized for their tendencies, he is an active participant in their recovery. He never fails to be there for them and won’t stop trying to help them until they are well and home again.
Near
Doesn’t know exactly what to do, though he’s sure there’s a solution if he just keeps looking for one.
Researches the best ways to approach the situation and makes a plan based on what has had the best results.
Wonders if he was too detached as a father and that it led to this.
Matt
Has never been one to see a lot of potential in humanity and worries that his attitude towards people could be a factor.
Doesn’t Know how to help them, but whatever they need, he’s in 100%. He’s always got their back and knows that they will be ok.
Beyond
Doesn’t think their tendencies are that big of a deal. It doesn’t mean they will turn into a killer. He doesn’t think they need to be hospitalized.
If they did turn into a killer though, he has a lot he can teach them.
He finally has someone to share all his stories with from the LABB case. ( I HC B loves to talk about himself and tell stories, hence all the things he told Mello in Another Note.)
Light
Light doesn’t know how to feel about this. Certainly he does anything that will help his child, but this entire situation has set the God of the New World thinking. “Is my child no different than those I exact justice on? Surely I could not have produced such a person.”
The plan was for them to take over as Kira one day. Now He second guesses whether giving them that power is a good idea.

Hello
For the ask game:
3. what do you think about Light? 10, 24 and 25, please.
Thank you for the asks and honestly great questions!! I have a feeling this most is going to be a bit long, so hopefully I can get my thoughts and everything out in a way that’s easy to keep up with!
Also spoiler warning for those who haven’t finished the series!
~~~
3. What do you think about Light?
I honestly have SO many mixed feelings about him, like it’s hard to just be like ‘oh i hate him’ or ‘oh I love him’ because it just isn’t that simple for me personally, which that itself is a great sign of a character since you have to think about that sort of thing with them. Right off the bat though,  I’d like to say that I think Light as a character is phenomenal. He takes the character-type of what many would consider as the ‘perfect guy’ for the main character but twists it in a way that makes the reader/viewer question the protagonist their supposed to be rooting for.
I also think of Manga!Light and Anime!Light as different people to an extent, as in the manga you watch a seemingly ‘normal’ guy who has issues with the world deal with the sudden power that was thrown on him. I talked about it before in my last ask post, but the scene after Light killed his first person after testing out is a great way to express how he feels, and is one of the few times we really see Light show THAT much emotion. He shows regret and guilt, thinking himself as a murderer and you can tell how it affected him. Anime!Light you don’t get that, and instead he seemed to just take on the task of being Kira and god of the new world without much else thought. I definitely prefer M!Light in comparison to A!Light to say the least, so I’m going to focus a bit more on the M!Light side of things.
I personally found myself wanting to have hope for Light, even though I knew that he wasn’t going to get better but instead worse over time, and honestly it’s probably better story wise to keep him as the ‘bad guy’ who stays bad instead of trying to pull a redemption arc out of no where or something. I have a feeling I’m beginning to ramble, so I’m going to try to wrap this up.
I have a love-hate relationship with Light, because even though I don’t agree with his actions and the tactics he uses to get the ‘perfect world’ he wants, and I do find his thinking flawed and find him very arrogant the more power/ego Kira gains over the world as the story goes on. Yet I find him as a character in general just fascinating. I was definitely more on L’s side of things and found myself enjoying a majority of the scenes where people simple put Light in his place and treat him like a dude with a god complex rather than what he wants/expects. There’s just a lot of thoughts I have about him, but yeah it’s just a love-hate sort of thing for me when it comes to Light.
~~~
10. Do you ship any characters?
I usually find myself being a bit of a multishipper when it comes to most fandoms, it just depends on the source material and the characters obviously. I definitely can enjoy a lot of the ships when it comes to the fandom, but even if I don’t like a pairing I do my best to remain pretty respectful about it.
One thing to note is that I can’t really find myself shipping L with anyone in the series to be honest, like I can find myself enjoying his relationship dynamics of characters but with my own interpretations and DR stuff, It’s hard to view him with someone else romantically.
Some ships I like/don’t mind though (especially when it comes to au stuff as most of these in canon probably wouldn’t work out lol): Matt x Mello, Mikalight, Rem x Misa ig? (more like the concept is sweet i think even though in canon Misa treats her pretty badly and Rem said she doesn’t think of her that way), uhhh. My brain is pulling a blank right now but these are the main ones that come to mind.
Some platonic pairings I enjoy (as there are a lot more of these for me): Matt + Mello, Mello + Near, Matsuda + Misa, Honestly all the task force have really interesting dynamics with one another, L + Watari (obviously in a father/parent way, I just like seeing their interactions), Ryuk + Light, Ryuk + Misa, L + Matsuda’s relationship is honestly pretty funny to me and honestly L’s dynamics with the task force is also interesting as well.
I think that’s it when it comes to shipping stuff atm
~~~
24. Any headcanons you’d like to share?
Oh! I feel like I have a couple but at the moment my mind is pulling a blank for some reason. Some head canons that do come to mind though deal with my Death Note DRs in some way but they can also be interpreted with the actual series itself, so hopefully this is good enough! Usually I do better with a certain prompt of some sort though for future references though!
I’ve seen a post a bit ago about Matt and Mello being roommates of some sort at Wammy House and they find themselves in that roommate mentality still when they do room together, and honestly I agree so much with that.
When Mello leave the Wammy House I see him not contacting Matt or anyone from Wammy House as he turns his focus on his side of the Kira Case, even if apart of him misses them and what he grew up around. Yet he pushes through because he’s stubborn and wants to do whatever he can on his own with the Mafia without involving someone like Matt, probably for his safety. After the explosion though when he has no one on his side, I think that’s when he realizes there’s only one other person he can truly trust and rely on and that’s when he contacts Matt to help him on the case.
Not really a headcanon as the author himself mentioned that the rivalry between Mello and Near was one-sided and that Near actually liked Mello, I do see both boys sometimes wondering what it would have been like if they didn’t have that rivalry and became friends instead. I honestly see Mello thinking that more towards the end of the case and after the explosion, but at that point he’s probably thinking it’s too late to even pursue a friendship like that with him.
I like to think that at Wammy House, Matt didn’t really understand Mello’s rivalry with Near and at times questioned him about it at first but he was pretty supportive
He didn’t have anything against Near though and was pretty indifferent on the whole thing personally, but if it made Mello happy and helped him achieve a goal he had no reason to deny.
Matt in general in general is someone that gives the vibes of not caring about much, but if you’re close to him he is literally SO loyal?? Like if someone close to him has an issue, even if he might make a comment or remark, he is always there to back them up.
I like to think that over time Light actually enjoys Ryuk’s presence, kind of like a sense of some sort of comfort that he isn’t alone of some sort? Like at first he might have been annoyed and still gets annoyed whenever he acts annoying and distracts him from work, but also I think he doesn’t like hate his company. Probably would rather be around him than Misa unfortunately </3
I think that L and Chief Yagami had a pretty good friendship, or perhaps not friendship but i’m not sure what to call it atm. Like I think L respected him a lot and Soichiro was the same towards him, and I think at times if they decided not to talk about the Kira case it’s usually pretty good for the most part.
It’s not really a headcanon but Matsuda trying his best to get some positive attention for things he does in the case is funny and kinda sweet. Most of the time L probably ignores his antics and doesn’t really feed into it, but there’s like one or two times where he actually does
It’s probably very small, probably something along the lines of “Good job.” or something but Matsuda feels so happy that he even acknowledged him like that and didn’t call him stupid for once. Definitely was a good boost in his mood
I find the thought of Light and Ryuk playing video games early on when he first gets the notebook charming in an almost funny way. Like Light probably either was talked into it by the shinigami or was like ‘screw it, I have nothing else to do atm’ and Ryuk is just happy he can actually do something and not just watch him working
Light is definitely competitive in games though, like he’ll probably try to act like it wouldn’t matter but like most things with him, but it did lmao
I find the thought of the wammy kids doing things to mess with/annoy Roger so entertaining. Like I feel bad for him, but if I were asked to assist in the pranks or antics I probably would just for his reaction alone
Think that’s all for random misc head canons for now, if you want something more specific just send a request!
~~~
25. Ramble on about whatever you’d like
Thank you for this one! I usually feel a little guilty whenever I ramble on about things in general, but the fact that some people are interested in my thoughts on things is so sweet!
At the moment though I’m honestly not too sure what to ramble about as there’s a lot on my mind and it’s hard to pick one thing and honestly it can be a bit hard to go through all my thoughts at times.
But! One thing I will always stand behind that ya’ll have probably seen countless of times so far is that the Wammy Boys deserved better and I will always say it if necessary tbh. Speaking of wammy house though, that comes to mind is that I wish I could learn more about it at times, yet I also enjoy the mystery of it in a way. It’s something I’d be so down to learn more about, but if not I’d be pretty okay with that outcome. Plus just leaves things for fans to interpret in their own ways if they want, and that’s something I definitely enjoy when it comes to the fandom is how they take something vague and turn it into so much more.
Also speaking of the fandom I’m surprised yet so thankful/grateful for is that the death note fandom is still going on here. It was such a relief seeing that I wasn’t alone in my hyperfixions and thoughts, and seeing all the talent in the art, writing, etc, is just amazing and something I look forward to a lot in all honesty. I’m also just so thankful for the people that take time out of their day to look at my blog in general. You like, reblog, or follow me? I literally want to be your best friend and if I wasn’t so nervous about starting conversations with ya’ll I definitely would have messaged a couple of ya’ll a while ago. Until then I hope you just read this and see me on your blogs and hope my reactions and comments is enough until I get less nervous lmao.
One last thing before i close the blog off is that I love L with my full heart and I adore Matt and Mello so very much. My favorite lads <3
~~~
Alright that should be it for this post! If you stuck around, thank you!
Some future posts to expect: Matt, Mello, + a f!reader based on the dream I talked about before, some L angst, and possibly something with Light :)
Anyways have a great day/night and here’s a reminder to stay hydrated and eat something if you haven’t already <3
Mello with s.o who locks theirself in bedroom after going through something devastating. (Losing someone close to them) ? Scenerio
here it is anon :) I hope you like it
It will never get easier.
It’s been three years since my father died. Three exhausting years of mom blaming herself, blaming me, blaming whoever she sets her sights on that day. There are rare occasions when she points the metaphorical finger in the right direction, the drunk bastard that ran over him with his car.
I’ve told Mello about my father but he doesn’t know today is the day he died. I still need this day to be a time for me to be alone. The smell of dad’s blanket is calming, he always draped it around me whenever I felt lonely or scared. God I miss him, if only I could pull him into a giant bear hug one last time. I’d never let him go. Maybe if I close my eyes and dream hard enough, I’ll get back the feeling of being by his side again.
Fuck, Mello is back home. Does he really have to bang on my door right now?
“Are you okay? Why is the door locked? Did someone try to break in?”
“Everything is fine, go away.”
He’s not talking but if I know him, he’s still standing there thinking of something to say. This isn’t going to be easy.
“Go away? Do you want to talk about something? I’m here if you need me.”
I need you to leave. me. alone.
“Mihael just go, I’m okay.”
Maybe using his real name will help him understand how serious I am.
“Mih-? There’s something wrong, tell me.”
Fucking shit, I can’t have this day to myself can I? The first year mom slept beside me in my bed all night. Another year passes and mom won’t stop texting me about having alcohol in my house. “You’re going to end up like the shitbag that killed your father.” Bitch. Now Mello can’t take the hint that I want to be left alone. Fuck it, it’s ruined. Guess I’ll have to wait until next year.
“Just stick a toothpick in the lock, I really don’t want to get up.”
“Are you hurt?”
“No goddammit, would you stop asking me questions? If I was hurt, why would I lock the fucking door? Idiot.”
The look on his face when he opened the door, I’ll never get it out of my head. The last time I saw that much hurt on someone’s face was... on my father’s face.  The night he died. I told him I didn’t want to see him again, I said that over some petty bullshit about leaving my keys in the front door. He just wanted to protect me. Why didn’t I see that? He wouldn’t have left if it wasn’t for me pushing him away that night. Now I’m going to lose Mello too. No, I’m not letting this happen again. He’s staying with me tonight.
“Come here Mello, I’m so sorry I snapped at you. I just- I” Damn this lump in my throat hurts. “I-I c-can’t lose y-you, I’ve a-already lost my... my... m-my”
I can’t take it anymore, all I can do is cry.
“Shhh, I’m not going anywhere. Today is the day he died isn’t it?”
His gentle voice and his hand running through my hair only made me cry harder.
“I’m so sorry. What do you need me to do?”
His eyes are so beautiful, full of sincerity. What did I do to deserve him?
“Just hold me. Stay with me. I don’t want to be alone.”
“You’ll never be alone again. I promise.”
I believe him. For the first time in a while, I feel completely safe and loved. I’ll definitely see my dad in my dreams tonight, I can hardly wait.
