If you could remake sonic underground what would you do with it?
I’m going to assume that I have to keep the very basic tenets of the show, IE: The triplets, the fact that music is important, the prophecy.
I’m going to admit it’s been a while since I’ve actually watched it, and I might stew on this and come up with some other stuff later, but here’s a few things right off the bat:
Explaining what the prophecy actually was. It’s in the title sequence and is the reason Aleena keeps running from the kids, but we never even hear it? Maybe don’t put it in the first episode to create some suspense, but at the very least explain it by the end of episode five or so.
More serialization. It very much wanted to have its cake and eat it too by crossing Satam’s more serious tone and stakes with AOSTH’s more silly one, and it just kind of fell flat on its face. It really should have leaned harder on having stakes matter from episode to episode, because it didn’t really feel like it was getting anywhere most of the time, and it would have definitely benefitted considering its overall plot seemed to indicate Things Were Happening That Cause Other Things, as opposed to AOSTH’s ‘a thing happens and then we go back to normal at the end of the day without it affecting us’. They were trying to topple a regime, after all. On that note, actually seeing Aleena besides having her narrating the starts of episodes would make her feel like more of a character- maybe have her leave more messages for the kids littered throughout the locations, or have her get the chance to meet them a few times? The stakes didn’t feel personal enough, despite that being the case in concept.
(I remember seeing somewhere that they had to slam out scripts in a matter of days instead of weeks like you’d typically get, which sounds about right, so.... uh, more time on that front too. That’d probably help)
Cut the ‘song per episode’, make it every five episodes or so, if that. You’re not Phineas and Ferb. Nobody is Phineas and Ferb. I know PNF didn’t exist yet to compare to, but it’s like the only cartoon I’ve ever seen that actually pulled off song-per-episode without a good chunk of the songs being Not Good. Maybe have them just sing a few lines while attacking, or go undercover as an actual band sometimes? ‘Music helps represent the rebellion/sparks the revolution’ is an idea, especially since Sonic as a series is known for having good music, but they just didn’t have the talent onboard to pull it off.
PLEASE GIVE SONIA AND SONIC PERSONALITIES BESIDES ‘RICH GIRL’ AND... man, Sonic was just so bland in this one I don’t think he had much of a personality besides ‘kind of sarcastic/egotistical’? Of the episodes centered on one specific triplet, there were about ten each for Sonia and Manic, and like two for Sonic. He’s a fun guy, but they sucked all the personality out of him to try and make the other two look better, and it was pretty painfully obvious the writers didn’t know what to do with Sonia and she was just made to try and appeal to girls. There’s a reason Manic was my favorite. All I’d ask with Manic is exploring how life on the streets probably made him a better spy and freedom frighter. They all brought different talents from their different class backgrounds, that was the intended appeal, right?
I feel like Sleet and Dingo were an...... idea? But they were just really weird and not that memorable besides the shapeshifting gimmick. I think you’d need to either revamp them or create a rotating cast of bounty hunters. Robotnik minions need to have good personalities to play off of how bombastic he is. I don’t remember enough about them to really have much of a comment here.
Oh, and speaking of Robotnik, like the tone, they were clearly trying to split the difference between the incompetent buffoon of AOSTH and genuine threat from Satam, and it just makes the heroes look kind of incompetent themselves for not being able to topple this dumbass already. I feel like they should lean on the serious thing if he’d already conquered chunks of the planet, but he doesn’t need to be as serious as Satam Robotnik. Just... better at being a dictator.
Going along with the serialization thing, there should have been more time for the triplets to actually grow to like each other. Sonic’s probably used to a pretty ragtag group of people from being with the Freedom Fighters, but Sonia and Manic should have clashed more at the start. (I know they did do this, but it only lasted two or three episodes, tops.)

hello :D
ferb latin is one of my favorite songs/episodes !!! it was my fav episode as a kid (i think bc they showed reruns for it quite often so it just sorta stuck) and now its one of my personal favs for the nostalgia. (also bc the song is so unique and well done!)
qotd: whats been a comment someone left on CHFIL?
i like going through ur comments when im done reading a chapter bc everyones in the same boat like “AHSHJSKDDJ NEW CHAPTER!!” especially the people who comment their thoughts as they read through theyre so fun
hope ur having a lovely day and taking care of yourself ☺️☺️
HIII HELLO ANON!!!
oh saaame I remember that episode came out right around when I got into the show, it was one of the first ones I saw trailers for and actively watched. I actually used to write in ferb latin with some of my friends, LOL. The nostalgiaaaa is real. And the Doof subplot is quite funny too 😂 (and YEAH love the song, it’s so goooood)
Aaaahhhh what a great question omg! I’ve gotten so many lovely comments on CHFIL (more than I ever expected, it means the world to me 🥺🥺🥺🥺💕💕💕💕) and could make a whole post about them. I looove those long comments too!!! Reading them is just so SOOO so much fun, I always pace myself while reading them for the first time so they last as long as possible!
One comment that’s really stuck with me is from my friend Mel, or @macaronsforchat! She was the first person to comment on the fic and has been hyping it up and encouraging me to write it from the very beginning!! It wouldn’t be what it is without her 🥰. And I this comment right here (which she left on chapter 2) made me feel sooo so happy when I first read it, and it still makes me smile no matter how many times I read it:
just a quick note that I’ve noticed while I’m freaking out about how cute this scene is: your writing feels like sunshine to me. It always makes me smile and is just so warm and happy and asdfghjkl
She’s just the sweetest 🥺💕.
Any comments that point out things they like in my writing style really really make me smile! It makes me feel more confident in my writing😊.
It also makes me happy whenever anyone says they like the way I characterize Isabella, Phineas, and/or the rest! The PnF characters are all so close to my heart and I want to do them justice, so receiving affirmation that others like the way I write them feels really, really good🥰.
Also! anytime commenters use words like “soft” “pure” “wholesome” and/or “sweet” to describe the fic, it makes my heart SOAR. I set out to write a Phinabella fic that was 100% soft and fluffy and “Disney movie-esque,” and I’m really REALLY glad that translates and resonates with readers🥰🥰🥰.
Thank you sm for this ask, anon!!! It really made me smile. AND THANK YOU TO ALL THE LOVELY COMMENTERS!!!!! Writing CHFIL has been more rewarding and fantastic than I ever thought it could be because of you!
And I am taking care of myself! I hope you are as well 😊

For the asks, I'll ask Phineas and Ferb! And if you've already done that, Phineas for the character asks! :)
You know what, I’ll do both!
This is enourmous though, so under the cut.
PnF:
Favorite character: Ferb!! I just think he’s so chill and fun to watch. So many of my favorite moments in the series come from him, because he may not say much, but he says everything he needs to say and more than makes up by his lack of lines by crushing every single one he does have. Also helps that whenever he sung the song was an absolute highlight for me.
Least Favorite character: God. Linda. It’s just. IDK. She’s so unable to take Candace seriously, and if she really thinks that “there’s something wrong with her”, she should do something about it. I know, I know, it’s just for the jokes, but that has always bothered me.
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): My only real pnf ships are Phinabella and kinda Perryshmirtz (it’s just this thing where there’s so much cute art for them that I’ve just come to accept it as not being that weird, though I don’t blame people for being grossed out by it). I’m also lowkey fond of Candace/Vanessa and Buford/Baljeet, but I’m not sure I’d say that I really ship them. To round it up with number 5... I’ll cheat and say PnF SW Phinabella, just because PnF really got me to buy into the Skysolo expy huh.
Character I find most attractive: Growing up it was definitely Vanessa, but they’re all my children now.
Character I would marry: Lawrence seems like a chill husband.
Character I would be best friends with: Baljeet’s subplot in CATU being how much he likes Space Adventure was super hashtag relatable as someone who is super into SW. We could nerd out together, it would be fun.
a random thought: I wish they’d make a sequel to PnF SW. I’ve joked about it being named “Emperry Strikes Back” in the past, but it’s just... I love SW. I love PnF. PnF SW is a masterpiece. Let me have more of it.
An unpopular opinion: I’m not even sure what counts or not as unpopular, I’m not that involved with the PnF fandom like I was three years ago, but I think I enjoy CATU more than ATSD. Not because I think it has a stronger story - ATSD just has a lot of plotlines everyone always wanted to see, so no PnF movie will ever touch it in that sense - but I just think CATU is more fun. It definitely has a better soundtrack, but even outside of that I find myself thinking about CATU more than I ever did ATSD outside of writing fic where they remember everything.
My Canon OTP: Phinabella, of course. It will always be so weird to call them “canon”, but they are. AYA’s quality or lack thereof aside, I’ll always be glad for the episode for being the first PnF episode I watched in years and getting me back into the show, and I don’t think that would have happened were it not for my 13-year-old self struggling to read in English because there were no good PnF fanfics in Portuguese.
My Non-canon OTP: I already talked a bit about Perryshmirtz, so I’ll talk about Candace/Vanessa instead. I just think it’s so cool how their relationship evolved over the course of the show. A great thing about PnF is that despite having a very strict formula, there are some relationships that changed over the course of the summer, and these two legit had never even met before the show began and turned out to have such great chemistry.
Most Badass Character: You can’t not say Isabella. There’s Perry too, of course, but I think Isabella impresses me more because she’s not some badass secret agent, she’s just... a kid.
Most Epic Villain: Darth Ferb!!! I went into PnF SW mostly unspoiled and that was so cool.
Pairing I am not a fan of: Um. I have nothing against Canderemy, per se, but I always preferred Candace when she had plots with her brothers or Vanessa than her plots with Jeremy.
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Sometimes I think about the Mission Marvel episode and randomly get mad. It’s not even one specific character, I just don’t think that crossover worked. It’s probably the only episode of the show I only watched once, and I just... really don’t like how some of the characters were written in it.
Favourite Friendship: The kid crew is the best, man. All five of them are such fun characters, and I love all of their interactions. My favorite pair within it is probably Buford and Isabella, who I just think had some really fun scenes together, but you can’t go wrong with these five.
Character I most identify with: Growing up it was definitely Baljeet, as the nerd kid who got picked on and all that. Now, I’m not sure?
Character I wish I could be: Honestly, any of the fireside girls. They seem like they’ve got their life together. Wish I could relate.
Phineas:
How I feel about this character: Phineas is such a good kid. I always preferred Ferb, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think Phineas is awesome. He’s so nice, such a genuinely great person who just wants to help everyone so they can have as great a time as he is having.
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Just Isabella, really. I think there’s probably some good fanfic that makes a case for Phineas and other people (Baljeet could be cute, I guess?) but I just can’t really see Phineas with anyone else.
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Ferb!! They just get each other so freaking well, and for all that the actual story of PnF is less about the two of them and more how the other characters react to them, I don’t think the show would have worked if their relationship wasn’t as good.
My unpopular opinion about this character: Again, not sure what counts or not as unpopular. Maybe that I wasn’t into the “Phineas gets angry at Candace” scenes? Like, I remember before CATU came out people would always talk about wanting another, but I was so glad when the movie came out and we didn’t get one. Get on the trike was funny, but after that it got annoying.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I found the Phineas and Ferb Effect (the actual thing, not the episode) a weird choice, but if they were going to go there, I’d have enjoyed some actual aknowledgment on how weird it was. I know a lot of things got cut from the crossover for time, so I get it, but I do wish there was more of a reaction from Phineas and Ferb to finding out about it.
Favorite friendship for this character: I do really enjoy Phineas and Isabella’s friendship? Like, while I do ship them, I was never really one to wish they’d get together within the show because I didn’t want their dynamic to change, because it was just so good on its own. They’re such good friends regardless of anything else and I really appreciate that.
My crossover ship: I don’t do crossover shipping most of the time, tbh.

What's your favorite season or episode of PnF? I assume it's mainly Doof related, you know, considering this blog and all.
I think I like Season 3 the best since that season’s “out-of-bounds” nature was when we really started to see the payoff from the “formula” format that PnF parodies. In terms of episode concepts and structure, we get the Time Shift episodes that are basically canon AUs, “Ferb TV” which is just so random, “What’d I Miss?” where we can see that the world of the PnFverse doesn’t stop even when one of the main characters (Ferb + Perry) is away, “Blackout!” which had an interesting (and probably money-saving) premise, “Delivery of Destiny” where we get to see what the PnFverse looks like to a normal citizen of Danville, and the iconic “Remains of the Platypus” which showcases just how weird PnF actually gets if you’re not used to the typical progression of its episodes. Additionally, we get lots of growth-driven episodes in Season 3 like “Bully Bromance Breakup,” “Sci-Fi Pie Fly,” “Sipping with the Enemy,” and “Road to Danville” as well as episodes like “Escape from Phineas Tower,” “Perry the Actorpus,” “Cranius Maximus,” “Agent Doof,” and “Norm Unleashed” that highlight the consequences of characters deviating from or taking established norms too far. There’s also a lot of Lawrence and Norm-centered episodes in general, and I think they’re underrated characters!
As for which episode is my favorite, it’s actually a tie between “Tree to Get Ready” and “My Fair Goalie!” “Tree to Get Ready” has Stacy (also an underrated character and the original reason I got into PnF), awesome treehouses, Candace having fun with her brothers/their big idea of the day being doing something nice for their sister, and “My Goody Two-Shoes Brother.” Meanwhile, “My Fair Goalie” has the intellectual humor I enjoy, is a rare Ferb-centered episode, includes several of my favorite media gags, and has one of the refreshingly divergent B-plots where Doof and Perry aren’t really fighting. However, you are somewhat correct in that honorable mention does go to “Father’s Day” (arguably a Doof-centered episode) as it’s an episode with an excellent song, both Fletcher and Doofenshmirtz (AKA Vanessa getting Doof self-destruct buttons–early on in the series she kept trying to bust Doof and felt that his “work” always got in the way of their time together) family bonding, and Doof actually confronting one of this backstories head-on (with Perry’s support)!

Mr. Drako!
favorite thing about them: Can I say everything? Because everything about him is so damn entertaining! There’s a reason he’s my favorite of the teachers in MML. Not to mention, he seems the most competent out of all of them... considering he’s the only one that didn’t immediately go feral when they shipwrecked the yacht.
least favorite thing about them: Just as before, I don’t think he got nearly enough screentime for my liking. If Disney picks up that 3rd season, here’s hoping we get to see more of our resident vampire-- er, teacher.
favorite line: “It’s like I am a superhero-- who is evil!” ....’nuff said.
brOTP: Him and Coach Mitchell, after the events of... I’m not typing the entire name of that episode out. Speech and Debate League.
OTP: DRAKOTT!!!! DRAKOTT!!! ITS MY URL FOR A REASON!!! LET THE VAMPIRE DATE THE SEWER MAN, IT’S PERFECT! Seriously, Scott usually spends time underground, Drako can’t really be in the sun unshielded, so this means most of their dates would be underground or at night and it’d work out for both of them!
nOTP: The closest thing I have to a NOTP is Drakawski, but it’s not really a ship I hate? It’s just not my personal cup of tea.
random headcanon: Drako is actually a half-vampire, and he’s about 400 years old. He’s able to be out in the sun for brief periods because he’s not full-vampire, and it makes his blood cravings easier to deal with since he can usually just eat some rare steak or drink pomegranate juice.
unpopular opinion: is this an unpopular opinion? I don’t think I actually have one for him! Can’t think of one, at least.
song i associate with them: Yknow that one episode where Candace was turned into a vampire? Yeah that song. mostly because most of the songs i listen to outside of pnf/mml are video game osts.
favorite picture of them:
Tumblr media
seriously, he’s adorable here!!!

World’s Greatest Dad Ch 1
“Remember how you said if I got you a little Mary McGuffin doll, I’d be the world’s greatest dad?”
“Yeah, when I was like, seven….”
I was thinking about this quote the other night, and it occurred to me that the PnF fandom doesn’t have a lot of stories that involve a younger Vanessa. They’re out there, I remember there was one fanfic that had Vanessa and Heinz visiting Roger on Halloween night and she was dressed like a black cat. And if anyone recalls Emergency Procedures by Sage of Mudora, there was a certain flashback where you don’t know true seething hatred for Heinz’s sperm and egg donors until you’ve read it.
Anyway, the episode Finding Mary McGuffin gave me the inspiration for this fic. I’ve been wanting to write a young Vanessa story for a while now.  Hope you enjoy!
Ch 1: Questions and Hot Chocolate
Ads blared on the television, filling the penthouse with saccharine, overly cheery songs about family and all the hot items on sale this holiday season. Heinz knew he was going to get Jingle Bells stuck in his head again, but he was too preoccupied with cleaning to care. He debated breaking out the Vacuum-inator to speed things along, but that particular creation tended to be unpredictable on its best days. And he refused to wade through a balcony filled with dust bunnies again.
Heinz sprayed the table with a cleaning solution, swiping a rag through the liquid. He held his turtleneck over his nose so he didn’t breathe in the harsh ammonia scent.
He had to keep moving. It was better than just sitting on the couch and wallowing. Especially when the rest of the city was so cheery with their carols and horse-drawn carriages and chiming bells.
It wasn’t that he hated it, per se.
He just didn’t care.
And there were more important things to do. For instance, making his little girl happy and trying to establish himself as enough of a threat to warrant a nemesis.
Speaking of his little girl, Charlene should’ve dropped her off by now. Heinz glanced at the clock. How could it already be five with no sign of them yet? He forced himself to breathe and relax before dialing Charlene’s cell number.
“C’mon pick up, pick up,” Heinz muttered as the phone continued to ring. “Why isn’t she picking up?”
“Hello, Heinz. Vanessa and I are just heading out the door. We’ll be there in fifteen minutes,” Charlene said smoothly, as if she didn’t care about punctuality.
Heinz sighed. “You’re an hour late.”
“I’m not,” Charlene sounded offended. Heinz could just picture that familiar eye roll. Vanessa had taken to doing the same thing recently. Must’ve gotten it from her mom. “Did you forget Daylight Savings ended last month?”
“What does Daylight Savings have to do with anything?” Heinz grumbled. But he glanced at the time displayed on the DVD player, then over to the analog clock on the wall. Sure enough, the DVD player held the correct time. Heinz pinched the bridge of his nose in embarrassment. “Sorry, you’re right. I never remember to change the analog. Didn’t mean to get all…accusatory there.”
There was a soft snort on the other end. “Apology accepted. You want to talk to Vanessa? I can’t be on the phone and drive at the same time.”
Heinz could feel his mood brighten considerably. “That would be great.”
“Here, Vanessa. Talk to Dad,” Charlene said. Vanessa said something in the background that Heinz couldn’t make out. “Just say hi.”
“Hi,” a quiet voice muttered.
“Hi, sweetie! Are you ready for the weekend?” Heinz asked.
Silence.
“I’ve got hot chocolate and a box of candy canes here. You like that stuff, right?” he pressed.
“Mm-hm.”
Vanessa loved chocolate. It was her version of almond brittle. He knew she wouldn’t be able to resist a mug of her favorite drink, especially now that a cold front had blown into Danville. While it wasn’t unusual that she was quiet on the phone, he thought she’d at least perk up over that.
Heinz decided to try one more time. Maybe he could get a general idea of what was happening. “Are you feeling okay?”
“I’m fine,” Vanessa said, though she didn’t sound like it. “See you in a few minutes.”
She hung up.
Heinz could only stare at the phone in disbelief, wondering if the current custody agreement had something to do with him raising a teenager in a seven-year old’s body.
“Hot chocolate mix, mugs, marshmallows, candy canes, and the milk is in the fridge,” Heinz reviewed, racking his brain for any items he might’ve missed. “Instant Hot Cocoa-inator. I should remember that for next year. And it’ll be nothing like the Instant Hot Coffee-inator. I think I still have blisters from that one.”
The mug didn’t reply.
“I have got to stop talking to myself like this,” he muttered. The doorbell rang, and Heinz grinned at the items on the counter. “And I’ll be right back, you guys are gonna cheer my baby girl up in a bit, okay?”
He rushed to the door, pausing briefly to remind himself that he shouldn’t fling the door open and embrace Vanessa right there. The week had gone by slower than Heinz would’ve liked. It had been way too long since he last saw her.
Both Charlene and Vanessa would say it’s only been two weeks, but that was still a long time.
After inhaling deeply to calm himself, Heinz opened the door.
The first thing he noticed was how heavily the two were bundled up. Scarves, coats, boots, and pretty much the entire winter deal. It must’ve been colder than he thought.
Charlene cleared her throat. “Well, hope you two have fun.”
“Hi, Dad,” Vanessa said. She busied herself by removing her gloves. A black backpack was slung over her shoulders.
“Hey, go put your things away and come to the kitchen,” Heinz said. “I’m making both of us hot chocolate. Looks like you could use it.”
For more reasons than just the cold, he added silently as he watched her shuffle off to her room.
Once Vanessa was out of earshot, Charlene sighed. “Maybe you’ll have better luck with her. I think something happened at school this week, but she’s not handing over any details.”
“She isn’t being bullied, is she?” Heinz’s mouth tasted like sand, his memories of Big Black Boots Boris resurfacing briefly before he pushed that bully to the back of his mind (part of him was itching to make a scheme out of that).
“I’d have to call her teacher for a conference as soon as possible if that were the case. There’s a week and a half left before Winter Break,” Charlene mused, shooting Heinz a pointed look that clearly said she’d be handling the teacher portion if it came to that.
Heinz balked, but he knew she had a point. He’d gotten tossed out of the last Meet the Teacher night, and the school probably wouldn’t want him back on their property any time soon.
“I’ll see what I can do,” Heinz finally said. “No promises though.”
“You’ve gotten through to her before,” Charlene said. “I’m sure this time will be no different. Anyway, I’d better go. Those holiday cards aren’t going to write themselves. Be back on Sunday evening!”
“We’ve done this routine for two years!” Heinz called after her as she walked back to the elevator, annoyed that she thought he needed the reminder. “I already know it!”
He closed the door, mentally counting to ten to get his irritation out.
Vanessa was taking her time, he’d noticed. Heinz was about to knock on her bedroom door to check on her, but he knew she didn’t like being rushed. He decided to microwave the milk first and only check if she hadn’t come out by the time both mugs finished.
It was funny how time worked. Sometimes days passed in the blink of an eye, while others would drag on until the dull clicks of a clock would drive any sane person mad. It seemed like yesterday that Vanessa had learned to crawl and would stubbornly insist on following him everywhere. It was the first time Heinz had noticed just how unsafe the makeshift lab he’d set up in the basement could be. He didn’t want to find out if Vanessa had inherited his resistance to random things exploding.
Then the divorce happened.
Heinz and Charlene didn’t see eye to eye on many things. But they both agreed that Vanessa shouldn’t be denied a relationship with one parent.
Things worked out. Though the first few weekend visits had been awkward, Vanessa adjusted remarkably well. In fact, Heinz thought she adjusted better than he had.
“Dad, you’re being weird again,” a voice cut in.
Heinz blinked, realizing that he’d been staring down at two steaming mugs of milk. Vanessa must’ve come in while he’d been lost in his thoughts.
Wallowing, to be exact.
It was a habit he really needed to break.
Vanessa tossed a math workbook onto the table, rushing up to the counter to get a good look at the ingredients Heinz had set out.
“I don’t have whipped cream, but we’ll be fine without it,” Heinz said. “How many marshmallows do you want?”
“I can do it myself,” Vanessa declared, ripping open the hot chocolate mix and dumping it into her mug.
“How’s school going?” Heinz asked as he added the mix to his own cup. Vanessa was too focused on getting the last of the powder out to respond. “Just trying to make conversation.”
She glanced at the box of candy canes before slowly pushing it away.
“Not a fan?” he guessed. “Or is it the whole no candy before dinner thing? Cause you can have one. What your mother doesn’t know won’t hurt her.”
Vanessa shook her head. “There’s a girl in Ms. Hanson’s class who looks like a candy cane. She wears red and white and she’s always carrying this huge stuffed Ducky Momo.”
It was the first time she’d spoken more a few sentences since arriving. Heinz couldn’t wipe the smile off his face. Then he saw Vanessa shooting a reproachful glare at him, and he figured that he wasn’t supposed to be smiling at whatever she was going to say. He took a sip of his drink as he focused on getting his mouth back to a neutral position.
“Is this girl being mean to you?” Heinz asked. The words were out of his mouth before he knew it. He couldn’t help but assume the worst. Or think up a whole bunch of complicated schemes that would nip this bullying thing in the bud before Vanessa was hurt.
Bullies would leave their mark forever.
He knew that all too well.
Vanessa added two marshmallows to her hot chocolate and carried it back to the table. “She’s not mean,” she said, resting her elbow on the table as she stirred her hot chocolate. “We talk sometimes. We were sitting at lunch together today.”
Heinz was just relieved that bullying didn’t seem to be the issue. “And what happened?”
“We talked,” Vanessa said. “She said her mom was remarrying and she was getting a new brother. Then I asked who her mom was married to before. And she said she didn’t remember his name, but he was gone. Then she grabbed her Ducky Momo and left.”
Suddenly the hot chocolate didn’t seem so appetizing anymore.
There was always the possibility of Charlene remarrying some stranger. She was financially stable and down to earth. But he couldn’t fathom Vanessa calling someone else ‘Dad.’ That honor belonged to him alone and there was no force in the world that could make him surrender it.
“And why you’re upset has something to do with this?” he asked, uncertain as to where this story was heading.
“I think I made her mad,” Vanessa said quietly. She breathed on her hot chocolate, creating small ripples along the surface. “Did I say something wrong?”
“You didn’t,” Heinz replied. He didn’t know all the details. Vanessa might’ve left something out. But it didn’t seem like a possibility. And he didn’t want her to imitate his self-blaming habit. “What did you mean by ‘he was gone’?”
Vanessa shrugged. “Gone.”
Which could mean a lot of things, but it was clear she didn’t know. Heinz decided to drop that part.
“You could say sorry if you’re worried about her being mad,” Heinz suggested.
“Okay,” Vanessa said, for once not arguing with him. She was biting her lip. There was something else on her mind.
Against his better judgment, Heinz decided to pry. “Are you thinking about anything else?”
“Are you going to be gone too?”
English words with multiple meanings were quickly rising to the top of his To Destroy list.
“I…I don’t understand,” Heinz sputtered, almost choking on a marshmallow. He seriously needed to brush up on what parenting books said about discussing heavy topics. “Gone as in left or gone as in… permanently gone?”
He couldn’t say dead.
And he wasn’t sure which option was worse.
“Both,” Vanessa said. She was giving him an odd look.
This was how the girl Vanessa had talked to must’ve felt. Heinz couldn’t blame her for stomping off if Vanessa’s questions made her uncomfortable. He was tempted to do the same thing.
“I’m not going anywhere,” Heinz said firmly as he dumped the empty mugs in the sink. It was taking all his effort to sound calm. “And I don’t have anywhere else I need to be. Just do your homework and I’ll cook dinner.”
Vanessa didn’t argue. She flipped to her assignment and got right to work.
A/N: Heinz, you’re a disaster. A lovable disaster but still.
It’s funny how Vanessa’s story about accidentally making Candace mad/uncomfortable came together because it didn’t start that way when I was planning it. Some things just write themselves, you know?

ohhhhhhhh myyyyy goooooooossssssshhhhhhhhh
so imma go with the ones that like, left me a changed person, you feel? i’ll count down, so like, absolute fave is last. and i’m going to try and limit one per fandom!
3. The Seer by Kicsterash on dA - this is a phineas and ferb fanfic, and one that honestly could be its own stand alone novel with original characters. PnF was the first real fandom i was in, and honestly, anything ash wrote is specatcular imo! but this was the one that really stuck with me because of all the worldbuilding. it really inspired me to write and explore things! i ended up never finishing it because of some of the drama happening with the creator, and then my own mental health taking a turn for the worst and that caused me to lose interest in fanfic for a very long time (but that’s its own can of worms). anyway, i really really loved this one, and the great thing was, the author is an incredible artist too, so there were lots of images meant to be viewed as you read and she even included songs to listen to at certain parts!
2. Neptune’s Moon by Statikos on ao3 - honestly this fic changed me so much. i honestly think one of my fave things about fanfic is that you can take these characters you and everyone loves so much and put them in completely different scenarios from canon to tell a story that is close to your heart and that will leave a big impression on your audience. this fic is so well written and so powerful. it does have shipping in it, and a lot, but it’s really not the main focus of the story. i generally don’t like shipping in free! fics, but i really had to make an exception for this one (and... several others if you look through my bookmarks... don’t judge me) because the moral is so good and it’s so well written and the characters are all in character and it’s realistic (given the premise!) and i just... please read this fic. it’s about a cause that is dear to my heart and is actually what made me so passionate about it. it opened my eyes and i did my own research and began forming opinions on cetacean captivity because of this, which i told the author in a comment and got the response that that was exactly what she was hoping to do. it’s meant to start a conversation and a thought process if you want. or it can just be a well written fic. your choice.
1. Seven Pieces of Chalk by Lady Charity on ff.net - this should come as no surprise to people who have talked to me about all time fave fics before. this fic for hetalia that i read several years ago changed me so much for the better. it is a heavy fic that deals with a lot of serious topics, but i really do think the author handled it so well. this fic came to me at a time in my life that i really needed to read it. and for that it has a very special place in my heart. i think this is the fic i’ve reread the most, because i will come back to it every now and then and read it again. far too many of the things the various characters go through are too relatable and i have been in the exact same place too many times. like i mentioned in the above fic, it also does the thing where it takes characters out of canon and puts them in an entirely different scenario. i really and honestly do believe that it can be read by anyone, not just hetalia fans, because of this. there may be a few inside jokes of sorts that non fans might not get, but it’s core message will still be there. and one of my favorite things about it, aside from the message in general, is how it draws from existing pieces of literature within the story. it gives it a whole new level of realism that is, again, far too relatable. the writing is fantastic (even if i have found a few typos in my many readings). i am a huge fan of her other works too, as they carry that same sense of realism and just... quality. i highly highly recommend reading this, no matter who you are.
oh golly, that’s a lot of text. if you want me to babble about some of my fave runner up’s on this list, i would be more than happy to! (wink wink, nudge nudge) i promise i won’t be so long winded with those tho!
