i don't know that i can be all that helpful here because my writing process is very much just like, "just write it innit" lol! i usually start with a broad sense of what i want to write about and narrow it down until i can get from a constellate set of concepts to a coherent argument that i can outline in my introduction and then explain and supplement throughout the piece. so for example, i'm writing on tennessee williams at the minute (and i'm v much still in the planning stage)---i went in knowing that i wanted to write on williams and that the parts of his work which interest me often have to do with how he writes about sex, sexuality, desire, and death. from doing a bit of reading i then narrowed that down into the outline of an argument about his use of contained spaces as mediators of contained (and therefore controllable) desire in streetcar, cat on a hot tin roof, the glass menagerie, and suddenly last summer. (this is all v provisional, i started planning this thing two days ago, i suspect it will look v different by the end.) so i now have a thesis statement and a handful of key points where i can substantiate and explore my claim better.

planning for me generally just consists of establishing the arguments i want to make and the best order in which to make them---salolita turned into a 25k four-essay monster but it was planned out as just one piece of writing, and the order i chose to make my arguments in (relationship the texts' discourse holds to hegemony -> containment and entrapment within the terms set by hegemony -> how that containment and entrapment creates the aesthetic subject -> how the aesthetic subject is contravened and why) was supposed to be the most coherent formulation, allowing me to segue into a new argument after having laid the groundwork in the preceding section. (i suck at this btw, i constantly find myself having to go 'i will return to X in greater detail later,' but it's a good habit to try and be better at than i am.) so i usually just bullet point out each section of the essay and sub-bullet point my arguments + the specific points in the text(s) that i'll want to reference.

honestly after that i kind of just write it lol! if there's reading that needs to be done then i do the reading and adjust my plan accordingly, but i personally find that my arguments only really start to come together and make sense once i write them out in full. i almost never write in order---i pick the part i want to write in the moment and i write it, and i leave linking everything up and stitching it together and whatnot for the proofread/edit stage. if i can't think how to finish a sentence or a paragraph then i mark it with a '[]' and come back to it later. the parts which are harder to tease out will feel a lot easier once you've written out the parts that you know really really well.

i think the most important thing for me is the thing that you will hear literally all the time forever but is unfortunately very true, ie. that you should try and write a little every day. i hate this so much but regrettably it is literally the only thing that actually lets me get stuff done. also get comfortable with writing on your phone and write wherever, like on the bus and shit. i write on my phone at work lol.

hello !! this is a super valid question and i’ll try my best to answer it for you 😗✌️

andi infamously writes a lot faster than thea and i do (she finished draft 1 of chapter 3 in like. two days. which was so scary. i’m in awe of her fr) but she has also spent a lot of time editing ch3 so it’s definitely not like these chapters are publish-ready in a short amount of time by any means! it took thea a couple of months total to fully write + edit ch1 and it took me about 3.5 weeks to write ch2 and another two weeks to edit it which is part of the reason we’ve spaced out our posting schedule like we have — we put a lot of effort and care into these updates and we want to give ourselves as much time as possible to get ahead before all 3 of us inevitably get so super busy with work and/or school in the fall!! so while we do write a lot, please don’t think we are so insanely speedy about it because unless we are having Really Good Writing Days, that’s definitely not the case. sometimes we do have days where we are really in the zone and write more than usual, but at least for me, this is so so so rare. whatever i write in this time gets heavily edited because so much of it was nonsensical brain vomit LOL

as far as writing process goes, i think one of the things that motivates us a lot is that we genuinely do just talk about this au constantlyyyyy like we’re always coming up with silly little hcs or drawing for it or adding to the Lore ™️so we’re always getting inspired to write! all three of us are definitely people who use writing as a way to relax or even reward ourselves after a long day; we would probably die if we had to go too long unable to :/ messages like “i can’t wait to get home and write after work today” or “i’m going to write a little bit of ___ before bed because i deserve it” are very commonly found in our gc because we really just look forward to it so much! as for our scary word counts, i feel like there is a lot of worldbuilding in this universe specifically, and pacing is really important to us — we want to make sure introductions and set-up to a scene and character interactions are meaningful and flow naturally, and building tension (which is a hallmark of this fic hehe) does take some time, which can definitely add up word count-wise.

for the most part, none of us usually have a solid few hours to sit and write either (unless it’s on our days off or after work if we’re not too tired) and we get a lot of writing done in chunks! we hold each other accountable for short check-ins (“ask me for a snip in 30 minutes”) which is super helpful when you’re stuck, because it kind of forces you to get Something down without worrying if it’s super polished and edited and perfect. if you’re writing on your own, something i’ve started doing lately is setting a 15 minute timer and just seeing how much i can get done in that time, and then setting another and doing it again (up until however much time you have to write that day). i’ve found that the artificial deadline helps break the monotony of sitting in front of your computer for Hours on end with nothing to show for it bc TRUST we’ve all been there and it sucks so bad 😔✊

this got super long so i apologize but i hope at least a little bit of it was helpful! it definitely helps that we are constantly feeding into each other (i.e: having brainrot) and offering inspiration and advice, which does wonders for creative flow tbh. we’re definitely not cranking these chapters out as quickly as people might seem to think — thea started chapter four, which won’t be posted for about a month, maybe a week or two ago. i just started chapter 5 — about 6 weeks away — yesterday lol so we do take our time! don’t be scared by the giant chapters, we just had a lot of content we wanted to include in each one and are in too deep to take anything out 🥳🥳 thank you for the question! good luck with your writing we believe in you 🫡

19. tell me a story about your writing journey. when did you start? why did you start? were there bumps along the way? where are you now and where are you going?

i will stick with only one of these i think, or this will be far Far too long, so: fic writer rowan, several starts

the first time i remember like specifically intentionally setting out to write something that counts as a story, on purpose & not for school, i am eight & i am handwriting in a composition notebook and i am writing oc/transparent self-insert fanfiction about the protector of the small quartet by tamora pierce. i am using the family computer to look up oc names on angelfire fansites. these are 100% The Days haha.

i do more stuff like that, later; i handwrite pages on pages of pokemon fanfic (make-ur-own region type thing complete with bad drawings of fake pokemon). i do a lot of this kind of thing on my own and for me, and then i am maybe 10 or 11 & i move that to forums (bulbagarden palletshipping thread…..,,,) this is baby fanfic writer rowan genesis, and posting on the internet before i was in middle school entirely killed my desire to do it for over a decade; i write often and a lot even outside of my work (ive completed nanowrimo three times!) but nobody ever sees it.

i get an ao3 in 2013 and post one doctor who fic but i am too scared and i orphan it right away. during a really intense media fixation i try again at the beginning of 2022 despite immense anxiety and find its not so bad. and then again for a different fandom a couple months later, and the response is such an immediate pickmeup & the writer friends ive made are so lovely that ive been trying my best ever since

28. who is the most delightful character youve ever written? why?

this is so hard. sobs. i like writing characters that have unique speech patterns, who like. make the narrative Sound different by being the pov character, which is something thats sometimes kind of hard about english-translated works (am i changing their cadence too much would they actually talk like that how much is my interpretation of the subs messing it up) so,,, i think for me i think the Most delightful characters that i always have the most fun writing are always characters like. avvy rasmr, who talks like a little fantasy spock, or anyone i can give talking quirks (like aye’s petnames). this is a copout u cant ever ask me my favorite anything i cant choose

39. what keeps you writing when you feel like giving up?

you see most of the time i am aware that i love writing its something thats good for me as a person and i feel better when i do it even if its hard and the process occasionally sucks and in that way it is similar to like. taking a stupid mental health walk. you know. so,,,, if i can (sometimes you really just cannot. it happens. its okay) i just…. like….. honestly the ‘i’m being so brave about it’ mindset is good for this. be annoyed & bitch & complain but u still gotta do it and look!!! you did!!!!!

also selective giving up is good for you. have several things to choose from so if something stalls you Can give up, just a little, and go elsewhere for a bit

When I started writing in March I’d post every 4 weeks ? Bc I’d be so in head if my piece was good enough I got sick from reading and rereading to make sure everything was alright and I’d also feel frustrated that this whole process slowed me down in terms of posting

So one day I started doing drabbles I think I tagged them as Alec blabbers where I didn’t care about grammar or plot holes or ooc moments i wrote them and posted them bc I enjoyed the idea and thought that someone else would enjoy them too and ppl did!

Now you’ll see me write full fledged fics with super fancy metaphors and 10/10 grammar other days you’ll see 4-5 sentences encompassing an idea, and sometimes it’s literally just hc-like posts but what they all have in common is that I enjoy making them

And with time my writing improved, I felt confident in my piece even if I wrote it in 30 mins compared to the 3 previous weeks I’d spend on a piece

I also want to point out that the beauty of tumblr is that there’s no requirement for what a good piece is, here streams of consciousness are more appreciated than fancy smansy metaphor and grammar

As long as you enjoy writing and posting ur pieces that’s literally all that matters

What do you thnkk would be the healthy and mature way of dealing with those emotions when it comes to us, humans?

Theres another thing i wanna ask. Do you believe there are ppl who feel those negative emotions or maybe all ❔ emotions more intensely which results in them handling it worse or could it b that the fundamental emotion is similar in all of us but it’s the ways we conduct ourselves while the feeling arises that matters and shows more? As an example we have two people who get extremely angry but one has less self control/insert other quality which makes them lash out in rage while the other doesn’t? The one is explodes/implodes might argue that they feel things more intensely but it’s so hard to measure isnt it? Who is to say they feel more intensely rather than… act more intensely when they feel said emotion

i think the healthy way to deal with things is to learn about emotional regulation and to gauge the way you find best helps you regulate. some people can address issues immediately whereas others need time to process. some people need to workout or expel excess energy, some people need to meditate, some need to journal or write it out to gain perspective, others (despite the work they do to regulate themselves) are trying to find resolution with unregulated individuals which itself can be a huge trigger so in that case maybe doing some work on staying detachment and learning in your own orbit rather than getting sucked into other peoples realities and perceptions of reality is beneficial. idk. it really is subjective and situational so i cant sit here and give a prescriptive answers cause life is more nuanced than good v bad/right v wrong

i think that there are people who are more sensitive to others but that doesn't necessarily mean they feel more than others. heightened awareness, preexposure to trauma and life experience all shape a person, their perception and their reaction to things. (im sure u know this). so its fair to say no two people are the same, and as such peoples tolerance for pain or discomfort is also not the same. some people are always in pain and so are so numb to it they seem high functioning. just because theyre not as reactive doesnt mean they dont suffer. on top of that one person may find the prospect of abandonment petrifying whilst another wouldnt even recognise the interaction as abandonment, theyd see it as simply separating paths. all of that is based on conditioning, preexposure, and the families/societies/countries were born into

Do you have any fandoms you want to write for but for any reasons you just can’t/don’t? Also any tips on writing any “murderous” scenes? - 🛎️

1. SO MANY !! kinda off topic but I have a lot of crushes on female characters from fandoms im in that I don’t write for simply because writing mlm fan fiction is my main way to overcome my internalized transphobia/homophobia butt like actual fandoms I would say

• genshin impact (not rlly into it but was)

• x-men (characterization fears)

• twisted wonderland (lots of characters + characterization fears)

• some slasher characters (I’ve only written for ones that I’m more comfortable with in personality and even then I hate a lot of my slashers fics cs I think my characterization of them is SOO bad (mainly bo sinclair) + I’m still figuring out how to write characters that are mute in any capacity and have rlly only practiced with Vincent but still that’s in a headcanon format which is easier than actual fics and overall all my slasher character writing fears sucks cause I love characters like bubba sawyer, thomas hewitt, michael myers, jason vorhees, etc and want to write for them but I’m scared to)

that’s mainly it I think ?? I still have these characters on my masterlist tho cs i can write for them and will I just need that push so my requests with those fandoms are cooking (very slowly) but can fun fact I almost discontinued scream for u out of fears my characterization of billy and stu and some other characters such as tatum, randy, etc was AWFUL (I still think it is but I’m not changing it at this point)

2. these scenes are HARD buttt I would suggest practicing recreating horror videos or movies onto a writing format to learn how to do that. before I wrote scream for you, I did this a lot just to practice for it. for instance, I rewrote the horror video “no through road” into a short horror story and it gave me a really good grasp on how to write that type of scene/story.

i would also suggest reading a lot of different horror or tragedy stories and taking and learning from what you can from that. seeing how different authors use phrases, setting, etc to set up a good horror is a great way to learn. if u want a more sad rather than violent type of scene, tragedy is a great way to learn how to make readers sympathize and feel sad at characters deaths etc (I recently re-read mice of men which I think is a perfect example of a murder-tragedy gone right and how u can make murder sad for both the victims and the perpetrator) Edgar Allen Poe is great too but I just love his work a lot so I might be biased 😭 just surrounding urself in content that is grounded in murder is a great way to familiarize urself whether it’s books, shows, movies, YouTube videos, etc !!

also don’t focus too much on making it insanely busy with murder and stuff. I hate to use this as an example but my friends when writing an horror story for class got into this mindset of “the more grotesque the better” and starting thinking of the most horrific ways for someone to die rather than taking the time to delve into what makes the story scary. focus of characters and the effect u want their death to have on the audience and on the story. imo, u can make death scenes grotesque but don’t rely on that yk? idk if that makes sense but stuff like “he plucked the woman’s eyes out one by one, the wet, slippery sockets squelching in the clenched first of his blood soaked hand. Then he peeled each layer of skin off in a torturous fashion; fueling his momentum on her screams of agony yada yada” wont make ur readers feel scared nor sad but rather uncomfortable

THERES JUST SOOO MUCH AND IM NO EXPERT !! like my murderous scenes were half baked at best 👎 research is ur best friend tho and learning what works and what doesn’t is a process so don’t be afraid to take risks and get feedback !! Hope I could help in my very scattered advice 🙏

I learned about us, I learned to let go of things that weren't in my control, I learned to accept things, to value and appreciate myself too. what sucks is this book didn't magically make this longing disappear 🌧 tho again, I'm still learning and trying, please be patient hehe.

I learned to accept that everything you chose was the best for you, and I pray to Allah it was for my well being too. I learned that somehow it was inevitable for us to part no matter how attached we were to another. I want to believe that you were sent by Allah to make my days happy, helped me grow, and showed me how to nurture myself.

the process was hella painful but I know the fact that that all these things happened weren't really my fault nor was yours. It was just what they call the "it is what it is" moment.

what did pamungkas say? "I love you but I'm letting go?" 🎶 wkwk I don't have the courage to call what I felt towards you as a 'love' but I'm sure what I'm feeling was real, and I (more than) liked you, past tense heheee
