SO. setting i imagine is similar to typical vat7k BUT a little darker and more dystopian. think steampunk industrial stuff... which i know hugo's kingdom is already like lol but just imagine it like. in a lot more places. this is basically a "steampunk" au too

robots are VERY common. invented by a group of scientists with the main ones being donella and ulla

robots are used as service etc etc. theyre not sentient at all so this isnt like. some unethical practice

but ulla and donella are OBSESSED with making them more and more advanced, theyre besties and all that. but ulla is Particularly obsessed with making the Perfect Robot

we know that ulla is kind of messed up in the head. in this au she kind of messes way too much with robot sentience WHILE ALSO getting obsessed with the eternal library. same stuff happens eventually. donella and ulla fight about the eternal library etc etc

BUT ALSO... ulla is working on her Magnum Opus. a son for her and her husband, who she is making to be the perfect robot. quirin is unaware of the shit shes doing and fully trusts her and supports this passion project

and well! she does make the first Sentient Robot. with the use of science and Magical Knowledge she was able to basically give life force through magical means into the robot. The robot of course she named varian. and not only is he sentient, but he looks completely human

she did some messed up stuff tho! again! she's programmed him with fake memories so he thinks he has lived a life fully as a human. he's also programmed to not notice things like the small seams on his body and all that. like his code just immediately disregards all that

anywaysss. after ulla disappears, quirin is dedicated to taking care of varian. he figures it's best to follow with ulla's choice of making sure varian doesnt know hes a robot

MEANWHILE ! because of the schism between ulla and donella, there was some wack shit that happened. namely robots going completely crazy. now all robots are Murder Robots. so the world is pretty Dystopian at the moment

Varian decides he wants to go out and find the source of what made the robots go crazy. bc this sucks lol. like everyone is Just Miserable

so he meets his friends. nuru, yong, hugo!

LETS TALK ABOUT HUGO

hugo works for donella. hugo also absolutely HATES robots. the robots have been messing shit up since he was a kiddo

he's kind of like a robot hunter. harvesting them for parts as well as getting rid of them bc theyre dangerous. usually donella directs him to different missions. and now shes telling him to join this guy (varian) bc she wants the secrets that ulla had hidden and varian is sure as hell after them

sooooo at one point. varian gets hurt maybe, or interacts with something that breaks the code in him or whatever. the code that stops him from noticing his robotic qualities. i think he probably would get super injured and like. he and all his friends stare in shock and horror as some sort of gash or sparks or whatever show a metallic inside

they all find out he's a robot together weeeee. no one is having a good time

so he's living with existential crisis. he's away from his dad so he cant travel all the way back to be like hey What The Fuck. AND he's still dedicated to his goal. but now he's just. confused, scared, and unsure if he's worthy of his humanity that he thought he had

they all try to work with this new discovery (which i think would happen earlier on rather than way later). hugo especially is like. having a crisis. bc he's always hated robots and for good reason. but varian... varian is SO human. he thinks, he feels, he cares, etc. he's more Human than a lot of the Flesh and Blood people he's been around

so you know, hugo starts to fall in love with him anyway. lots of excellent scenes of him helping varian with his mechanics, etc

and of course varian starts falling in love with him too, but is dealing with a lot of confusion as well. like is he even real, doesnt hugo deserve to be loved by a Human and not a Robot, etc etc

Lance is THE dad, he throws the kids surprise parties and makes the cakes himself even tho he can’t really bake cakes THAT well and all the kids ADORE it

Hugo had a hard time with his first surprise party because he’d been adjusting well visibly but having everyone in one room was kind of startling for him. Like, seeing Eugene and Lance being so unbothered by this made him go “What if I’m never going to be like that?” And he panicked, and Lance UNDERSTOOD. Rapunzel wanted to check on him, but Lance understood, so he insisted that everyone give him a few minutes alone. And then he went to check on her. And Hugo’s just not having a good time, but because they’re still Hugo, he’s holding his face up and going “My makeup isn’t waterproof-“ and Lance looks around and tells him Catalina has some that is waterproof that she’d let him borrow and Hugo just sobs because he’s so unsure about people treating him well, having food, and he’s so confused about the fact that there are still orphans on the street. And Lance tells her about how just them, Eugene, Lance, Catalina, and Angry being there has helped orphans. Funding is higher than ever, more kids are being adopted, and everyone is basically unable to ignore orphans. The soon-to-be king and a royal engineer being orphans naturally resulted in lots of funding from the king, and Lance tells Hugo that he and Eugene will go down to the orphanages and have little classes with the kids, and Hugo is welcome to join them. And she’s just DISTRAUGHT because the idea of that happening makes him so happy and they can’t believe people are being that nice to orphans like him now. This IS about the rat now, and Lance, because their dynamic fills me with wonder because we need more dynamics with queer kids/teens and queer adults supporting them

AUGJGJGJGJGGGH NO LITERALLY IM SOOOOOO,,,,,,,, if lance and eugene have done anything its a TON of activism for struggling kids and pushing change for the justice system overall. i think they have a ton of programs for kids who have been exposed to a life of crime and just people who are struggling in general? IDK I CAN’T EXPLAIN IT VERY WELL BUT YK WHAT I MEAN. god thr dynamic between the former thieves is SOOO. it makes me SICK. AND HUGO STILL FEELS LIKE HE DOESN’T DESERVE TO BE THERE. he feels like he doesn’t deserve the time of day and he’s still afraid of getting too settled there because he feels like varian’s inevitably gonna get sick of him and throw him to the streets again. so those simple gestures mean SO MUCH to her just to know that like she might not feel like she deserves that life yet but there are other kids out there who are doing better

GODD i just am so ill about how they support each other and the people around them. lance and eugene totally bring hugo and the girls with them to hang out with the kids and hugo lets them all play with olivia while they all tell them stories about their adventures and lance and eugene are acting everything out like the drama queens they are. just the fact that they know it’s not perfect but it’s getting BETTER and they want to do whatever they can to make it a little easier for the people involved who haven’t been as lucky as they have i’m so

hugo just being concerned abt their makeup running is also so real. lance finds it amusing in a loving way because eugene would quite literally be the same.

Wow, your Varigo headcanons make zero sense nor point.

Varian isn't afraid of bugs, he grew up on the countryside. He has no probleme with mud, grime, manure or vermin.

Varian is much stronger than Hugo. He could easily beat him in a fight.

Hugo owning a gun isn't your original idea but was a thing of Anna Lencioni when Hugo was still a DnD character.

Hugo drinks coffee and energy drinks and no tea.

And Varian is definately the gorgon, he literal has snake hair and petrifies people.

I think Varian is fine with bugs EXISTING, so long as they're not ON HIM lol. I've also said before that I think he really doesn't like dirt or grime, and that's why he wears gloves (he's suuuuper adamant about washing his hands like 20 times if he touches something gross lol) He's not a germaphobe or anything, it's more of a sensory thing!

Varian's probably stronger than he looks and could totally twist Hugo's arm behind him and tell him to stop being a PRICK. Hugo's ALSO stronger than he looks, and while that would take him by surprise, I think they're pretty evenly matched in terms of strength! Hugo's just taller so he uses that to his advantage (Varian punches him in the gut to bring him down to size lol)

You're right! Hugo having a gun IS from Anna's DND campaign!! I've said I take a lot of my Hugo inspo from DND Hugo as opposed to VAT7K Hugo, and Anna giving him a gun was so big brain ugh

Tying into that as well, Anna said Hugo heavily relies on potions for energy when he's working long nights, and I love love love that idea as well. The tea thing was meant to tie into Cyrus (who, in a lot of my headcanons, lines up very closely to Kay's character, Pyrus) who's a big tea drinker (ask me about dreammist tea ouuu) so tea reminds Hugo of Cyrus, who he's got positive associations with!

Like I said in the gorgon post, Hugo would 100% just be a human, but if I HAD to pick smth, it'd be a gorgon. I could see Varian being a gorgon too tho, yeah! There's this one artist who has a whole AU where he is one and it's super angsty and I like it a lot!!

•My thoughts on VAT7K•

-So What's VAT7K?

It's basicly just a Concept idea of a graphic novel for Varian from Tangled, it was rejected by disney.(Now i whouldn't even known about it if Isaac Carlson hasn't done a video about so yey ig)

-The new Characters

•Ulla

•Nuru

•Hugo

•Donella

•Yong

•Cyrus

(now i don't like Hugo's hair + he looks very modern but That's just me, but i will say i do like Nuru's design tho, and Yong is forgettable as heck)

-The storyline

So what i got from this is that Donella and Ulla where reserch partners or something then Donella "killed" Ulla by traping her in a library or whatever and Varian some how finds her and She tried to possess his body and at the end dies anyway///and along the way he meets 3 people from other Kingdoms (even tho there are 7kingdoms) Anyway Hugo was supposed to be like Eugene (even tho i don't think so but i'l get to that later) Like first a thief and then Varian's love interest. ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

-My opinion on the story

I don't like Varian's mum. Why? Well mainly because i do not care about her, really nothing in the series Made me care about her, just let her stay dead (or just explain what happend) + i do not think that Varian needs a spin off or novel•(ofc if it actualy makes sense then I'm fine with that)• i mean he got his Happily ever after, and i whould like to see a Cassandra spin off.

-Varigo

Personally i do not like Hugo. The ship is based on stereotypes, "UwU smol bean" and "Alpha Bad boy". It's pretty toxic. And in fanfics Varian is usually potrayed as innocent and Hugo aggressivly flirting with him and calling him "Sweetcheeks"...yeah pretty gross if you ask me. He gives some fans predator vibes. And Hugo Also is apparently "smarter" even tho not backing Up that claim.

-Not canon

I think a lot of fans of this novel forget that it is not canon (yes not even the name "Ulla" is Canon.) If you write a fanfiction even using the name "Ulla" please tag it as #VAT7K because it is an Au. Infact if you ship Varigo you are basicly shipping Varian with an OC. It's The same as Varian and Lashanie. And fans Also spread a lot of misinformation.

-Will VAT7K ever be Canon?

No. No it won't. There was too much spoiled for that. (But i mean if you like it there is still fanfiction)

-My finale thoughts.

Lets just say i am more Mad about the 5 missing episodes from Season 3 then this novel getting rejected. It's much better as just an AU in my opinion.

So, I started watching the tangled series.

I am kind of spoiled, mainly out of context xD (so yeah small spoiler warning I guess?) I'm not at that part yet tho. I don't know what's up with blue haired Cassandra or the stones or villain (?) Varian. I am not at the part people tell me is good yet but I still love this series already!

Honestly so far this is just a really solid kids show. With good messages and funny jokes and quirky characters. I teared up at the episodes about Attilas bakery and the little thief girls. What. And the episode I just watched. About the ... wrath of ruthless ruths wraith?? So good :D the spooky fun. The stupid captain. The talk about dreams. Old ruffian friends. And of course the song?? I love this.

Actually really excited about what is yet to come! (and pls don't spoil me thx)

FINALLY, I FINISHED!!! I think Bunk’d could have had potential but i think it lost that when it didn’t have any connection to the original material or it shouldn’t have had any of the Jessie characters to begin with aside from like one of them it never felt like an actual spin off. I think seeing a Kim Possible spin off would have been fun or maybe even how My Babysitter’s A Vampire did it where the show comes after the movie, in this case the 2019 live action, but I think that or Hannah Montana but with a focus on Mikayla or something with an iconic character but more of a guest character. Although that one would be tricky because I feel like on of the binding forces of HM was lilly and miley’s friendship and I am not sure what would tie the other one together LOL

but anyway you always talk about going to Disney events in the discord, what would be the ultimate dream event put on by Disney that you would want to go to (i.e. parade, museum, live show, all of the above ect.)

i do think it was weird for them to have a spinoff when you only have 3/4 of the kids from the original show. ive only seen a few eps of jessie, but im guessing all four kids are equally important more or less. if you had....8 kids in the original show and then 7/8 in the spin off that could be ok but i feel like 3/4 is a big loss relatively speaking. i also think the summer camp concept is a little random and you can only do so much with it. phineas and ferb and gravity falls managed to get summer focused shows right but i feel like thats not an inherently manageable plot.

those are some really neat ideas! i think christie would implode if there was a kp 2019 show lol. i wonder if they ever considered doing that. the idea of a show about a side character is really interesting too. i think that was what they were trying to do with alyson stoner's character in the ep of thats so raven where cory has a guest appearance on a tv show.

oh! speaking of spin offs about side characters, i shouldve mentioned this in my last answer: i know there was a spinoff about varian from tangled the series pitched that never got picked up. i feel like that doesnt entirely count as answer bc it was in fact pitched and theres info about it available online but still (while it didnt seem like the booms pilot got very far), since hes my fav i wouldve loved to have seen that!

on that note, is there a pilot that didnt get picked up in particular that you really wish had?

ive actually talked about this with some friends before, id love to see a museum exhibit dedicated to disney channel specifically! there was a disney channel section of the archives exhibit at d23 this year but i would love to see a full blown exhibit, especially bc that way you could have more variety beyond just the most popular shows and movies (they only had stuff like hsm, hannah montana, wizards, and camp rock. plus they only had costumes besides the wand used for wand IDs). ive been to some touring disney archives exhibits (some of which have included a few disney channel things), so i think that would be a really cool concept to do entirely with disney channel! they cant use any of my liv and maddie props or my stan plush tho lol. what about you?

I do ! Not my favorite but I love every moonstone au with different characters a lot ! I know moonstone Varian and moonstone Eugene were quite popular and I remember seeing so many SUPER COOL fanarts of the concept, I still find them super awesome. Love the badass outfit artists would give them.

Part of me really wishes they’d focused a bit more on Varian’s redemption arc;; they kinda wrapped it all up in one episode and it felt sort of rushed? I would have loved to see more of Varian coming to terms with the things he did and realizing how wrong he was and how awful he’d treated everyone in Corona--but he’s still holding onto that pain and the betrayal that turned him into a villain in the first place. That sort of torn feeling between “Yes, I need to take revenge for what they did” and “No, I’ve gone too far, I need to make up for my mistakes”.

Clearly this is something Andrew could take advantage of, because Varian obviously hadn’t made up his mind yet, and dangles the “Obviously you’re conflicted about this so you can still be friends with everyone after we wipe their memories and start fresh” option in front of his face. And Varian, alone and trapped in a jail cell, probably wouldn’t have hesitated to go along with Andrew’s plan, being so young and impressionable and ready to please just about anybody. And when he was presented with the option, with the chance to be friends with the people he once loved so dearly...of course he would go for it, because deep down he’s still desperate for their approval. It’s a win win, he can take revenge and then wipe the slate clean.

By the time Rapunzel comes back to Corona Varian already seems to have fully accepted that he messed up, badly, and he wants to make up for it, but doesn’t see any other way around it other than going to the extremes again. I would have liked to see this inner conflict pushed even further, maybe with Andrew taunting Varian that listen, we’re all you have, we’re all you have to turn to, we were the ones that picked up the pieces and gave you a new purpose and if you betray us here you’ll have NOBODY, and be all alone again. And Varian knows this because he firmly believes Rapunzel and the others won’t ever forgive him, so he’s caught in a battle of morals, “Do I help the only people that actually ever LISTENED to me or save the kingdom at the cost of being abandoned again”. And in the end his good side wins over the bad, and he decides that hey, everyone may still hate me but I won’t make the same mistake twice, I’m going to make the right decision this time. And that in turn moves Rapunzel into forgiving him and knowing that he truly regrets hurting her, and that she can start to trust him again.

Another thing that they really glossed over was Quirin’s rescue;; I know the fans hypothesized for AGES what the note he wrote said, only to have it be an anti-climactic “I’m proud of you, Varian” when it could have been SO much more than that. Maybe information about the Brotherhood or some ancient secret kept about Zhan Tiri, maybe even any of Quirin’s knowledge on the black rocks and the moonstone. It felt really disappointing when it was just oh yeah Quirin’s proud of Varian but we all knew that already! And ofc that’s a driving factor to Varian’s character arc, wanting his dad to be proud, so being told that was definitely important, but there could have been more.

And I guess his rescue was sort of a let down too since it’s been building for an entire season, and then Rapunzel just swoops in and gets him out in two seconds flat and is like welp. That was easy. IDK I just think there could have been more drama around it--I would have loved to see an episode focused solely on Varian and Rapunzel, maybe they have to venture out and get a special artifact or something that works with her hair incantation to break the amber, and during that time they start to rebuild their friendship and actually talk things out fully. (I mean they kind of hit on some of those points in Be Very Afraid but not ALL of it.) They’d probably bring up Cass, too, and Varian tells Rapunzel if there was still a chance for me after all I did, then there’s a chance for her, too. And after lots of danger and perils they manage to get what they need, and by then they’ve completely mended their friendship, and Raps comments on how grateful she is that Varian’s back by her side again and it’s SOFT. And then after that they free Quirin--something that came of teamwork, something that would feel a lot more satisfying than what we were given. That would round out Varian’s redemption as a whole, helping Rapunzel, giving her advice, and taking his own part in saving his father rather than just having Rapunzel do all the work. 

TLDR Varian’s redemption felt really rushed ESPECIALLY considering how much work they put into his story arc in the first season so it wrapped up in a really anti-climactic way (and there’s also the fact that he’s such a big fan favorite so we would not have minded a longer redemption arc for him?) along with Quirin’s rescue and the note being kind of a letdown and this is how I would have made it better

#Tangled the Series #Varian #TTS #Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure #Tangled Varian #Long post #IGNORE MY RAMBLING I just had some feelings about this #I LOVED the episode but I would have preferred them to expand on it #The focus was saving Corona and not Varian's redemption which imo is pretty important #We'd all looked forward to it for so long and it was. It was just over too fast #It just confused me. Why would they dedicate so much time to building him up as a villain and then redeeming him so quickly #Looks at ATLA #Zuko's redemption is a perfect shining example of how drawn out and complex an arc like that should be written #I do understand tho that they probably didn't have a lot of time to really fit that in. I know the season's main focus was on Cass #So they were probably like hmmm. Well Varian is still the villain but we don't really have time to focus on him that much #Sighs it would have been so nice tho... #Like we don't get to see ANY of him after he's thrown into jail #We get none of that realization that he fucked up or the regret he feels and the conflict #I was surprised to see him already being like. Everyone will hate me for what I've done I was so awful #Esp since the last time we saw him he was bitter and angry and just closed off from everyone #But I guess it makes sense that he softened up it had been about a year right?? #Anyway.
