“What?” I felt as if someone ripped the lungs from my chest. I couldn’t breathe. Everything had been taken from me to many times, ripped away when I got to close. One cherished thing at a time. But now, those small things that were taken were perfectly acceptable. When compared to those words that came from Alexander’s mouth.
“I used you. Bait for the guardians, given that you got tangled up in their business and mine. You served your purpose.”
The wind picked up, ruffling my hair. As if a hand stroked it, trying to bring in warmth, where the sudden cold set in. My only thought was issac. His injurys, and the money I desperately needed to save him. “And my share of the profit?” I asked. I needed to pay off mr.Winston. The sooner I did, I would be free. “You still get it, but know that you served your purpose. I don’t need you anymore.” Alexander pulled something from his pocket. A stack of cash, more than enough to pay off mr.winston. Alexander threw it to me, and I caught it. “I don’t need the girl, kill her.” Alexander says to Rio. With a toss of her brown hair with a golden hand, she drew up a knife. “May I make one last request?” I ask as Alexander walked through the sand. “Of course. But what can you offer?” Rio paused, looking over her shoulder curios. Zara watched from her spot on the sand. “Darkling metal.” I draw off my sword and my weapons, dropping them in the sand. Alexander smiled, taking in the metal. “I-” “You want proof. Here let me,” I shift the metal into a staff, then into a single bar, easy for travel. The sand shifted, pouring over the edge of my boot. “Thats all the proof you need. You already know what I am.” I say. “Yeah, a half breed.” Alexander says. This time I smile at him. “What do you want?” He looks to the bar. “The girl. And Nolan.” Rio stiffens, throwing a glare at me. Zara looks up at me in pure shock. I glance at nolan, broken in the sand. His bloodied, bruised body. He couldn’t even lift his head to look at me or advert the sun that glared into his eyes. “I want a little extra. What else can you offer me?” Stupid bastard. I knew exactly what he wanted, one last time with me. He wanted me to say it. To tell him what I knew he wanted from me. His whore. “A good time in bed, if that’s what you really want.” “Oh, what an offer for a whore. Tell me, is this girl and the boy worth what I’m going to do to you.” I internally cringe at his words. My breath hitched at just memories of being locked in a room. “Their lives are worth it.” Worth? I would do it for issac, kyle and for this time, zara and Nolan. “Then Rio tye The girl up while, Talia and I make up loose ends.” Alexander says. He turns, heading straight for the first tent. I follow, thankful I had takem sankir that morning. I pause next to Nolan as Rio dragged zara over. She shoved zara to the sand, kicking her stomach. “Heal him please.” I say, drawing off my scarf and pushing it under his head, shoving the money under it. Guardians, always sticking their head in other people’s business. Then I turned away, following Alexander to the tent. Once inside, Alexander only took his pants off, silently telling me he was going to make me feel useless. Like using me like a whore is the only use I have. “Take it off.” So I did. I drew off my shirt, my shoes, pants, and finnaly my undergarments. I felt bare, and ashamed as Alexander forced me to the blankets and used me. He forced himself in, and gripped my neck as he did so. And by the time he was done, I could hardly stand. Then for a last mark on me, he dragged a blade down my wrist in a deep line. Another tally to all the times I was bedded. Once his pants were back on, Alexander left the tent without so much as a word, or even a look at me. I dressed as quickly as I could and pushed out of the tent. The sun was starting to set, and everything was packed up, his crew packing up the wagon, and dragging down the tent behind me. Rio passed me, jumping up on the wagon to help load up. The sand shifted under my feet as I approached zara, where she sat in the sand with Nolan. The blood was dried by now, flaking away in the sand. “I got him to drink some water, but there was only so much I can do. His chest is healed but the arm I couldn’t fix. He’s not strong enough to take it on.” Zara says. “Its fine. As long as he will live.” I try to crouch but end up dropping to my knees as I attempted to bend. Zara noticed, instantly reminded of what I did for her. “You didn’t have to do that. Why did you do it?” Zara asks. I pull my scarf back from nolan, pulling the cash and stuffing it in my pocket. “Veil isn’t the nicest but I appreciate him for who he is. A great business man, with street smarts. And that’s good for seventeen.” “Veil broke your arm, don’t give me that crap.” “Because I didn’t want you to die. They have taken to many lives.” Rio aproached us, My horse in tow. I instantly turn, taking the reins. “Get up, you holding him in the saddle.” I say. Zara stands, pulling herself up into the saddle. I didn’t want it to end like this, but I had what I needed. Pushing a hand under his head, I draw nolan up into a sitting position and grab him by the armpits, dragging him to the horse. Them I lift him and zara grabs him, dragging him up. Grabbing the reins I lead the horse towards the north, back to veniper. Home ◇◇◇ It was early morning when we reach veniper. The street vendors were barley setting up, the sun not even up yet. I could smell cinnamon rolls, and fresh orange gravy, and baking bread. “Thankyou.” I hear zara say. “You know saying it three times is fine, but thirty? I mean, come on, I get it already.” I say with a laugh. When I turn to look at zara she smiles. “You know, I don’t know what veil saw in you, but he was wrong. Your a different person then I expected.” I don’t say anything about this. I just lead her through the familiar streets, that cash burning agaisnt my skin. I am so close, so close to picking up the pieces. Issac will be fine. I made it to the other side of veniper when the sun starts to rise. Zara coughed, Sorensen throwing his head up. Sore legged, I manage to draw my mask up, and pry a water bottle from my pack on the horse. “Drink.” I say. Licking my own dry lips. Zara doesn’t argue, downing half the bottle. Then she makes nolan drink small sips. “Why did you save a guardian.” “Good question. But why did I save a girl who is an enemy of issac.” Zara Tilts her head. “I heard about issac. I guess he took a bad beating.” Beating was the least of it. He barley escaped with his life, let alone finishing the mission. I manage a small nod, letting zara believe what ever she had heard. There was a shift of bricks around us, and suddenly zara’s crew was around us. Baxter stood inched from my face, knife drawn. Veil had a blade pressed to my throat, an arm wrapped around me and I suck in a surprised breath. Clay had a bow pointed at me. Suddenly a pain ripped through my body, and I knew it was saydie, twisting and turning my bones inside my body. Bitting my toung, I hold back a cry but drop to my knees. The pain twist again and I scream this time, falling into the cobblestone street. “Stop. She saved me!” Zara yells. The pain stopped, and I sigh in relief. “ Is that so.” Veil says. There are hands on me, turning me over. Veil keels in front of me and Baxter pushes me up into a sitting position. Then veil draws off my mask, taking in my dirty face. “Thanks for taking her from us, then returning her safely.” Veil gripped my throat. “She didn’t save you zara. She told Alexander where to find you. He had a reason to come looking. And then when it was convenient, she saved you, knowing you would be in debt to her.” Veil gripped my throat tighter. “Isn’t that right?” “Veil, stop. Zara’s right. She did save her and she didn’t tell Alexander. If anything, she protected us.” Clay says. Veil releases me. “Stay out of my head.” I hiss and clay narrows his eyes at me. ‘I just saved you. Be great full.’ His eyes seemed to say. “Zara can heal your injuries, then be on your way.” Veil says, watching me with those grey eyes. He stands, his gaze never leaving my face as he threw my mask into my lap. “Clay, show her in.” My legs were too sore to attempt to stand. It was a wonder as to how I walked all the way here. Zara dropped from the horse, leaving nolan up in the saddle. Cash appeared by zara's side, gripping her wrist. There was a quick exchange of words, cash glancing up at me and then he carried nolan down from the horse and into the building. There were hands under my arms, pulling me into a standing position. It was such a relief to sit that I now groaned as I was forced to put weight back on my legs. The hands disappeared and I turn to find baxter walking towards the building, disappearing. "Let's go."Clay says. I follow him into the building, laughing to myself as a bandanna is wrapped around my eyes. I count the turns, the number of steps it takes down each hall, memorizing it.
