When did Viktor choreograph Stammi Vicino and did he commission the music?
There are some controversies regarding Viktor's free programme and I took the time to look at them in greater detail and pin them down to the likeliest explanation. (some of the things discussed in this post I've mentioned in a discussion I was involved in recently. The rest of this post builds on that.)
Disclaimer: Please note that this is an analysis of the source material. Popular headcanons that have no basis in canon cannot be part of this discussion. This is getting a bit academic. Please bear with me.
1. Did Viktor commission the music for Stammi Vicino?
In an interview, Mitsurou Kubo called the aria a piece of music that exists in the world of YOI, but when we subject the hints in the anime to a close examination, they contradict her statement, making you wonder which is true.
I mean, there’s this (sorry for the crappy screenshot)
Tumblr media
Technically, the YOI creators might just have used footage of this programme because there was no time to animate Viktor skating an entirely different routine, but due to the tight time constraints of 12 episodes that forced the creators to condense the plot to 50% of its initial size, every scene and every image demanded to be filled with meaning. Speaking of time constraints, they could have used a series of pictures that show adult Viktor in different costumes (like those that had been drawn for Yuuri's room), but they didn't do that either, which rules out technical reasons for this choice.
But there’s more.
From a storytelling perspective, it makes no sense to combine these lines with a short scene of Viktor skating Stammi Vicino if it doesn’t apply to this programme. It’s bad storytelling, period. As Viktor’s fan, Yuuri knows which songs Viktor commissioned because skaters love to talk about these things in interviews. Being a skater himself, Yuuri is knowledgeable in all kinds of music genres even if he lets his coach pick the songs for him. Skaters just happen to be exposed to a lot of music.
This scene makes it seem as if Viktor has been commissioning music for his programmes for several seasons at least. While this doesn’t rule out the possibility that he occasionally picked a song that already exists for whichever reason, Stammi Vicino applies to Viktor’s situation at the beginning of the show so neatly that the lyrics must have been tailored to him. The commentator’s words while Viktor is skating his FS furthermore suggest that this programme shows a new and personal side of him. Of course, that could also work for a song that already exists, but how likely is it that such a song 100% matches the vision of a perfectionist? That a genius like Viktor would just roll with that is debatable at least. He’d rather think “Okay, that’s nice. But this verse and that verse don’t match my idea at all. I think I'll call my composer and ask them to write a song for me.”
Stammi Vicino holds unambiguous references to Plato’s Symposium, which the YOI creators have mentioned repeatedly. And while this is neither an argument for or against the song already existing before Viktor even thought about a free programme for the season in question, it seems too coincidental from a storytelling perspective.
To me, all this points to Viktor commissioning Stammi Vicino because taken all facts together, it’s what makes the most sense.
Side note: It’s not entirely uncommon for storytellers to contradict their creation. Sometimes, you forget details, remember them wrong, or didn’t think them through. Or your views simply change. In the case of YOI, we have to factor in the possibility that certain details had to be de-homoed due to protests from parts of the Japanese fandom. The rings that were removed from many official arts that were released during the first year after the show had aired are such an example. In addition, interviews are often heavily edited.
2. When did Viktor choreograph Stammi Vicino?
The first time we see Viktor wearing the Stammi Vicino costume, is right at the beginning of episode 1 at the GPF. While there is no rule against wearing the same costume for different programmes and costumes are expensive, you usually don’t see this in real figure skating. Some figure skaters even get a new costume for the same programme mid-season because matches the purpose better.
The music, the composition and choreography, and costume build the concept of a figure skating programme. The more perfectionist a skater is (and many top skaters actually are), the more specific you can bet they are about the concept. Viktor is a perfectionist who has full authority over his programmes and he can afford having several costumes per programme. Wearing the same costume for several programmes is a breach with his characterisation.
Let’s assume for one moment that Viktor did indeed create Stammi Vicino because of his encounter with Yuuri at the GPF in Sochi. Why would the creators have been so sloppy and put him into the same costume which he wears at Worlds when they even designed costumes the other two GPF winners JJ and Chris?
Tumblr media
Does he wear the same costume because he met Yuuri there? Well, Yuuri approached him at the banquet at the end of the competition and only because he was drunk. Before, Yuuri was to awkward to even talk to Viktor and was, in all likelihood, too busy not freaking out, dealing with having bombed his performance, and Vicchan's death. To reflect Viktor's first actual meeting with Yuuri in a programme, thus choosing a costume that resembles the suit he wore that night would make way more sense.
Some skaters change their programme mid-season. Some switch back to an old programme, other skaters create an entirely new programme. Again, a skater like Viktor could afford this and is skilled enough to bend a new routine to his vision in time for the big competitions. (For reference: Russian Nationals are two weeks after the GPF, which leaves a skater competing in both events one week in between. That’s just enough to pitch the idea to his composer and commission a costume.)
Once Nationals are over and done, Viktor could start working on the new programme and show it at Europeans for the first time. That would leave him about one month to bring it to a level that will win him this competition. Yuuri would now have about two months to create a perfect copy. As he his busy graduating and preparing his move back to Japan, it’s debatable whether this is enough time. That’s the only reasonable timeline for such a scenario. However, since Viktor wore the costume before the banquet, this doesn’t seem likely and the show gives us no clear-cut clue why that could be and I’m loath to speculate wildly.
BUT: Viktor can't have created this programme after Sochi because Yuuri explains to Yuuko that he started practising the programme when the competitions ended [for him, the season itself is not yet over]. For Yuuri, the season ended at Japanese Nationals, which happen to be at the same weekend as Russian Nationals.
Long story short: Everything points to Viktor having created Stammi Vicino at the beginning of the season in which he wins his fifth GPF and world title, respectively. And there’s a beauty in this choice because it gives Viktor an agenda beyond his love interest. Well-crafted characters exist outside of their interactions and relationships with the other characters. Giving them things that belong to them alone adds more depth to their personality and turn them into individuals. Viktor had a life before Yuuri and this life was lonely and his (secret) longing for love was an inherent part of it (I’m preparing a follow-up post that examines the lyrics more closely, so forgive me for not going into the details here).
Especially in a show that is limited to 12 episodes and in which every image is filled with meaning, including details that hint at the characters’ past are beyond precious.
Thanks for reading! <3

Marco the Phoenix - Fingers / Claws
Reader style - she/her, afab (No pronouns were used in the final result) Time slot - After hours Client Name - @kazieai CW: tension, stripping game
Tumblr media
“I think you managed to wear the most complicated clothing there is, yoi.” Marco muses, looking you over again.
You’d both been in a private room since you’d arrived. It wasn’t that you minded an audience regardless, but in this case there was something at stake. Win, or lose, something that had a person’s pride on the line wasn’t something to be done in the common room.
“How many layers are you wearing?” He questions.
“Counting lingerie?” You grin.
“Do you mean to keep it on, yoi?”
“Eh.” You shrug.
The warm chuckle that was as close to a laugh that he ever seemed to reach filled his chest and he smiled. “Count it then.”
“Five layers.” You answer. “Well, five tops… and technically five bottoms.” You admit, looking down at feet that still had shoes on them. Simple Mary Janes, with a loop on the back of the shoe. You’d considered wearing some strappy sandals, but you were trying to challenge him, not break him.
“And the rules are I can use one finger, or one claw.”
“Aye, and for the purposes of this agreement, talons and claws are the same thing.” You say, taking a step back as he finally steps closer. “And that restriction is only for the clothes and anything under them.”
Marco takes a quick step toward you, closing the distance and grasping your wrist in one hand. “Then, I should hold onto my prize, while unwrapping it, hm?” He questions, blue eyes locked onto yours. The small nod is all you can manage, words and sass caught in your throat. He’s never moved so swift before, long fingers firm against your wrist, holding your hand without a trace of pain. Despite that, you know you’re not getting your hand back until he releases it.
He leans in a little, and you feel a single finger hook into the button of the cardigan you’re wearing. One slow twist and the first button pops free easily. Then the second. Despite the layers of shirts you were still wearing it was almost like you were being laid bare already.
“Un… unbuttoning is the easy part.” You muse, eyes moving up to his, trying to hold onto what scrap of control you could find. “How are you going to get it off?”
He smiles, leaning forward and kissing the side of your face, before he tugged the article of clothing down the arm he wasn’t controlling. Teeth and lips teased the skin of your neck, the tender and skilled actions sending a shiver through you, a motion he used to pull the cardigan free from one arm.
“Something like this, yoi.” He murmurs into your ear, stepping back and pulling you with him, guiding you through a couple steps of a dance you didn’t even know. The momentum and twirl were impossible to fight, and he releases your fingers as he pulls the cardigan free, slipping his fingers between yours again so naturally it a took a moment to realize what he’d done.
You hear a click as you take the last step before coming to a stop, and realize that Marco’s slipped one of your Mary Jane’s off with a transformed taloned foot. He steadies you as you go off balance a little, bracing yourself against your own hand, careful not to break the rules of the bet even as he helps you.
Of all the people in the club, Marco had always seemed the least competitive. Too laid back to be ruffled into a confrontation, too relaxed to be concerned about much of anything. You’d seen fire in his eyes when he was at the edges of his passion, but even then his eyes hadn’t been like this.
Ever hooded. Ever seemingly unperturbed.
Sharp slit irises, deep blue eyes that flickered with teal sparks, and a focus that was already peeling back the layers of your soul. In those eyes you were already bare and shivering beneath him, conquered and soon to be deeply satisfied.
You wouldn’t regret it, but it was certainly foolish to have dared to challenge the Phoenix.

Scoring in Yuri on Ice
or the IJS Scoring System prior to 2018
Tumblr media
I made a guide like this before but I wanted to rewrite it since I found some flaws and want to add more resources and stuff for both YoI fanfic authors and fans who just want to understand scoring in figure skating a little better maybe :)
Disclaimer: I am only human. This guide is most likely flawed. But the ISU doesn't seem to understand their own scoring most of the time either so does it really matter? Please tell me if I have wrong information on anything or explained it wrong/confusingly. ^^
The International Judging System (IJS) has been used in figure skating and ice dance competitions since 2004. It replaced the prior 6.0 system which awarded two marks on a scale to 0 to 6, one for technical merit and one for presentation.
Some of the "older" skaters in YoI, e.g. Viktor, Chris and Yuuri, still skated under the 6.0 at some point. If you place the start of the story in 2015/16, then Viktor skated under the 6.0 for his whole Junior career and the switch was made around when he started skating in seniors.
But we are not here to talk about the 6.0.
Scores given within the IJS consist of 2 parts: The Technical Element Score (TES) and Program Component Score (PCS), which are then combined to make up the Total Segment Score (TSS).
A score sheet from a competition (in this case short program) looks like this:
Tumblr media
So let's break that down, shall we?
Technical Element Score (TES)
The TES is about the technical elements in a program, such as jumps, spins, step and choreographic sequences.
In the Short Program there are 7 required elements which can be skated in whatever order:
A double or triple Axel
one triple or quad jump
a jump combination
one spin with a flying entry
a camel or sit spin with just one change of foot
a spin combination with just one change of foot
a step sequence
Single jumps don't recieve any points at all, but do count as a performed element. That means if a skater "pops" a jump, meaning they open up to early and only perform a single rotation, they can't just try again.
The short program is 2min 40 secs long +/- 10 secs
The Free Skate is more...well...free. But there are also restrictions.
A total of 12 elements have to be performed:
7 jump elements. One has to be an Axel jump.
Three spins. One has to be a combination, one has to be a single position and one has to have a flying entrance
One step sequence
One choreographic sequence
Different to the short program, you get points for single jumps. Though those are hardly ever performed on purpose.
The Free Skate is 4 minutes and 20 secs long +/- (now it's 4 min).
Every Element has a Base Value (BV). That meas the performed element is guaranteed those points minus deductions and plus the Grade of Execution (GOE).
Base Values
In Figure Skating there are 6 jumps which can be performed with up to 4 roations at the time being. I will list them with the according base values and with the according abbreviations.
Toe Loop:
1T =0.4pt - 2T =1.3pt- 3T = 4.3pt - 4T = 10.3pt
Salchow:
1S = 0.4pt - 2S = 1.3pt - 3S = 4.4pt - 4S = 10.5pt
Loop:
1Lo = 0.5pt - 2Lo = 1.8pt - 3Lo = 5.1pt - 4Lo = 12pt
Flip:
1F = 0.5pt - 2F = 1.9pt - 3F =5.3pt - 4F= 12.3pt
Lutz:
1Lz = 0.6pt - 2Lz = 2.1pt - 3Lz = 6pt - 4Lz =13.6pt
Axel:
1A =1.1pt - 2A= 3.3pt - 3A = 8.5pt - 4A = 15pt
Those values are for prior to 2018 and correct in the context of YoI, the Base Value of the quads and 3A are now a little lower.
-> Why is the Axel worth so much more?
Unlike the other jumps, a single Axel has 1 1/2 rotations, since, other than the all other jumps, it has a forward take off, but is landed backwards.
As of now, the quad Axel has only been landed succesfully by Ilia Malinin, a 18 y/o skater from the USA. He landed it for the first time in competition and got it ratified at the beginning of the 22/23 season at the US Classic, a challenger event that was freaking geoblocked so no one outside the US fucking saw history being made...
Prior to that, Yuzuru Hanyu trained the 4A intensely, and landed it in competition on two feet at the Japanese National Championships in 2021, but failed to get it ratified internationally at the 2022 Olympics because he fell.
But, as far as YoI canon goes, not even Viktor jumps a quad Axel. The extra half rotation makes that jump extremly difficult and was deemed impossible for a very long time. And while I encourage you to use the quad Axel as a story point and a goal for one of the characters, and think it can be very powerful, I highly discourage you from putting a quad Axel in your story lightly.
Euler Jump (a transitional half jump used in combinations to change the edge for take off): 1 EU 0.5 points
-> in YoI that would still be called a single Loop (because thats what it is basically...) and be marked as 1Lo! They changed the name in 2018.
I will try to make another post about the different jumps soon, but for now here is a guide for telling apart jumps!
youtube
Combination jumps:
For jump combinations the base values are simply combined. E.g.: A 3F+1Lo+3S combination has a base value of 10.1 points.
Reduction of Base Value:
An underrotated jump (<) will receive 70% of the Base Value, a downgraded jump (<<) receives the Base Value of the jump with one less rotation. If I am not mistaken the 70% Base Value rule also applies to jumps with a wrong take off edge (marked with "e"). Someone please corect me if I'm wrong, I couldn't find the information anywhere...
Repetition:
In the Short Program, each jump can only be executed once. That means that if a skater jumps for example a triple toe loop as a solo jump and as part of the combination, the second jump won't receive any points.
Further in the Free Skate, the "Zayak rule" is to be observed, meaning that from all triple and quad jumps, only two can be executed twice. The repeated jump has to be in combination! For example having a 4T and 4T+2T in your program is valid. But if you have two solo 4T the second one gets marked +REP and receives 70% of the base value.
This also means that if a skater falls on that combination with the repeated jump, it's extra bad. Because that means -1pt for the fall, negative GOE of course and the jump is only worth 70%...tough.
If a skater repeats a jump, it will often be refered to as "zayaked".
Jumps of the same type but with different amounts of rotation are not considered the same jump.
Extra jump elements exceding the 3 in the Short and 7 in the Free don't receive any points.
Spins:
For Spins there are 4 basic positions: Upright, Layback, Sit and Camel. A Combination Spin must include an upright, a sit and a Camel position.
You can get awarded up to a Level 4 for a Spin, depending on various features such as a difficult entry, difficult change of position, visible increase of speed....
I will explain Spins and Spin Levels further in another post but here is a (very long...) list of values for different spins:
Upright Spin (USp):
USpB 1pt - USp1 1.2pt - USp2 1.5pt - Usp3 1.9pt - USp4 2.4
Flying Upright Spin (FUSp):
FUSpB 1.5pt - FUSp1 1.7pt - FUSp2 2pt - FUSp3 2.4pt - FUSp 4 2.9pt
Upright Spin with change of foot (CUSp):
CUSpB 1.5pt - CUSp1 1.7pt - CUSp2 2pt - CUSp3 2.4pt - CUSp4 2.9pt
Layback Spin (LSp):
LSpB 1.2pt - LSp1 1.5 - LSp2 - 1.9 - LSp3 2.4 - LSp4 2.7pt
Flying Layback Sping (FLSp):
FLSpB 1.7pt - FLSp1 2pt - FLSp2 2.4pt - FLSp3 2.9pt - FLSp4 3.2 pt
Layback Spin with change of foot (CLSp):
CLSpB 1.7pt - CLSp1 2pt - CLSp2 2.4pt - CLSp3 2.9pt - CLSp4 3.2pt
Camel Spin (CSp):
CSpB 1.1pt - CSp1 1.4pt - CSp2 1.8pt - CSp3 2.3pt - CSp4 2.6pt
Flying Camel Spin (FCSp):
FCSpB 1.6pt - FCSP1 1.9pt - FCSp2 2.3pt - FCSp3 2.8pt - FCSp4 3.2pt
Camel Spin with a change of foot (CCSp):
CCSpB 1.7pt - CCSp1 2pt - CCSp2 2.3pt - CCSp3 2.6pt - CCSp4 3.2pt
Sit Spint (SSp):
SSpB 1.1pt - SSp1 1.3pt - SSp2 1.6pt - SSp3 2.1pt - SSp4 2.5pt
Flying Sit Spin (FSSp):
FSSpB 1.7pt - FSSp1 2.0pt - FSSp2 2.3pt - FSSp3 2.6pt - FSSp4 3pt
Sit Spin with a change of foot (CSSp):
CSSpB 1.6pt - CSSp1 1.9pt - CSSp2 2.3pt - CSSp3 2.6pt - CSSp4 3pt
Spin Combination (CoSp):
CoSpB 1.5pt - CoSp1 1.7pt - CoSp2 2pt - CoSp3 2.5pt - CoSp4 3pt
Spin Combination with a change of foot (CCoSP):
CCoSpB 1.7pt - CCoSp1 2pt - CCoSp2 2.5pt - CCoSp3 3pt - CCoSp4 3.5pt
If you want to see good spins in men's skating, I highly recomend taking a look at Roman Spindovsky...ehm I mean Sadovsky ;D Here an example of a level 4 change of foot combination spin from him:
youtube
Step Sequence
A step sequence should have little two footed skating, a variety of different difficult turns and steps and cover the whole ice surface. Just as for spins, levels from base to 4 are awared depending on several factors that I will try to explain in a future post.
But for you to get an idea of what a masterful Level 4 step sequence looks like, here is the step sequence from Yuzuru Hanyu's Rondo:
As for Base Value:
Basic Level: 1.5 points
Level 1: 1.8 points
Level 2: 2.6 points
Level 3: 3.3 points
Level 4: 3.9 points
Choreographic Sequence:
The Choreographic Sequence is only performed in the Free Skate, and includes choreographic elements such as spirals, lunges... I will also make a post introducing different choreo elements in (hopefully) the near future, but for now have this Choreo Sequence from Deniss Vasiljevs as an example!
Watch the video from 1:25min to roughly 2:00min (or watch the whole thing I highly recomend :D). Using this as an example out of spite because the judges are stupid and inavlidated it for some reason...idiots...
youtube
As for Base Value, there are no different levels for choreographic Sequences so, very short "list":
ChSq 2pt
Grade of Execution (GOE):
The GOE ranged from -3 to +3 prior to 2018. The panel of judges awards GOE depending on how well executed an element is.
But how is GOE awarded?
Both positive and negative aspects of a performed element are considered and then added in the end for the final GOE.
Jumps:
To receive +1 GOE, 2 of the following bullets must be achieved, for +2, 4 bullets and for +3 6 or more.
unexpected/creative/difficult entry (An example for that would be a back counter into an axel jump)
clear recognizable steps/free skating movements immediately preceding the element (My favorite example in Yuzuru's Twizzle exit from a 3A)
varied position in the air/delay in rotation (Remember when Yuri Plisetsky raised his arms during his jumps in the Grand Prix Final? That's what they mean with varied position in the air. Delay in rotation is pretty self explainatory I think. The skater needs longer to rotate, making it more difficult)
good height and distance
good extension on landing/ creative exit
good flow
effortless throughout
element matched to the musical structure (I just love when a skater lands a jump right when the music pics up mmmh chefs kiss)
Negative GOE is given for the following errors (It's too much to write down so here is a screenshot from the ISU Guidelines):
Tumblr media
Spins:
To receive +1 GOE, 2 of the following bullets must be achieved, for +2, 4 bullets and for +3 6 or more.
good speed or acceleration during spin
ability to center a spin quickly
balanced rotations in all positions
clearly more than required number of revolutions (which is 3 is think)
good, strong position(s) (including height and air/landing position in flying spins)
creativity and originality
good control throughout all phases
element matched to the musical structure
Negative GOE is given for the following errors:
Tumblr media
Traveling refers to a skater moving across the ice during a spin instead of staying in roughly the same space.
Step Sequence:
To receive +1 GOE, 2 of the following bullets must be achieved, for +2, 4 bullets and for +3 6 or more.
good energy and execution
good speed or acceleration during sequence
use of various steps during the sequence
deep clean edges (including entry and exit of all turns)
good control and commitment of the whole body maintaining accuracy of steps
creativity and originality
effortless throughout
element enhances the musical structure
Negative GOE is given for the following errors:
Tumblr media
Choreographic Sequence:
To receive +1 GOE, 2 of the following bullets must be achieved, for +2, 4 bullets and for +3 6 or more.
good flow, energy and execution
good speed or acceleration during sequence
good clarity and precision
good control and commitment of whole body
creativity and originality
effortless throughout
reflecting concept/character of the program
element enhances the musical structure
Negative GOE is given for the following errors:
Tumblr media
Calculating GOE:
The Panel of judges usually consists of 9 judges. The lowest and highest GOE mark are cut, then the average of the remaining 7 is used to determine the GOE points for that jump.
For example:
A skater executed a Triple Lutz with a base value of 6 points. The GEO marks from the judges were as followed: +2, +2, +3, +2, +1, +1, +2, +2, +2. The highest and the lowest mark get cut. The average of the remaining 7 is 1.86. To calculate the GEO you now take the base value and do the following: 6 x 18.6% = 1.116 so about 1.12 points. The total points awarded for that jump would be: 7.12points
For combinations the base value of the hightest valued jumps is used to determine GOE, not the combined base value of the jumps.
As for step and choreographic sequences you multiply the average by 0.5 to get the GEO.
Yay! Maths :D
Highlight Distribution:
Jumps performed in the second half of the program are awarded a 1.1 multiplier of the the base value. E.g.: A 3A performed in the second half has a base value of 8.8 points.
Yuuri takes advantage of that a lot.
Prior to 2018 there was no limit on how backloaded (term used to describe programms with a lot of jumps in the second half) a program could be. Technically all jumps could be executed in the second half. However that left programs empty and boring in the first half since the skaters were basically just stalling time.
Now the multiplier is only applied to the first jump in the second half of the short and to the first 3 in the second half of the free. I am not opposed to that rule. The ISU made a rule that made sense for once
Deductions:
Of course, points are deducted for mistakes or other rule violations.
Deductions are:
Falls:
First two falls -1pt each. Third and fourth fall -2pt each. -3pt each for each fall after that.
Interruptions:
If the performance is interrupted by the skater, they lose -1pt for >10 but <20 secs, -2pt for >20 but <30 secs and -3 for >30 but <40. -5pt if the program isn't resumed withing 3 minutes.
Time violation:
-1pt per 5sec (program either too long or too short)
Costume/prop violations:
-1pt
A costume violation would for example be feathers (real feathers are prohibited), or if, for women, a boob falls out or something.
Props aren't allowed all together.
Part of the costume falls off on the ice:
-1pt
Somersault type jumps (aka Backflip):
-2pt
Late start:
Skater doesn't take starting position within 30 secs -1pt
Program Compoment Score (PCS):
The PCS used to be about the 5 following categories and is awarded by each judge on a scale from 0 - 10 in steps of 0.25. 5.00 Would be "average". As you may already be able to tell...this is not a very reliable way to judge this. Yeah...
Skating Skills:
Basically how good a skaters skating is. Can they skate with power and ease both forwards and backwards as well as clockwise and counter-clockwise? How clean and clear are the curves (edges) over the ice?
A skater should look effortless in their movement. Quick and easy, flowing over the ice with soft knees and ankles.
Their skating shouldn't be scratchy and noisy, resulting from pushing with the toe rather than the side of the blade.
Something you will often hear fans complain about or praise are edges. A Figure skate blade has two edges, outside and inside, and one sign of good skating skills is being able to go down deep on them. Look at Ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir for example. Edges so deep the side of the boot almost touches the ice. Beautiful!
Tumblr media
Transitions:
The "in between" technical elements. You don't want to just skate between elements, you want to tie the program together with linking steps. Skaters idealy incorperate different steps and turns to make the programm seem seamless. You want there to be little (visible) prep time for the next element.
I will make another post regarding such steps and turns.
Performance:
This is one of the categories that is heavily dependent on the judges personal preference.
In this category skaters are judged based on their, well, performance... Are they emotionally, physically and mentally involved? Do they project the entire audience? Do they have good ice presence?
In the case of Yuri on Ice: this is where all the Katsudon, waterfalls, grandpas etc. come in. Yuuri seduced Viktor for those sweet PCS points haha xD
Composition:
In this category the placing of the elements across the ice surface are judged.
Idealy a skater should use as much of the entire ice surface as possible.
Then there's also questions such as if the spacing of the elements etc. has some sort of purpose. Is there a story told or idea conveyd? Does the movement match the phrasing of the music?
For this category, having a good choreographer comes in very handy ;)
Interpretation:
Again, heavily judge dependant...
Is the skater performing with their soul? Are they skating with music in the background or are they skating to the music, their movement matching the beats in it?
This is the "music" that Yuuri emits when skating according to Viktor! So this is something he is very good at and should receive high points in...if the judges actually do that is another question...
Calculation of PCS:
Very easy this time! It's just the average of the individual scores given by the judges. For the Free Skate the score is factored by 2.0, meaning it's doubled to balance it a little with the TES.
Further Resources:
Now this looks very overwhelming! But here are some pages to help you!
SkatingScores:
You can use this blank IJS sheet to easily calculate scores using the abbreviations I used in this post! They also are the best and biggest available data base for scores in figure skating and you can look up competitons and skaters here!
ISU Results:
If you want to find score sheets for a specific competition you want to reference, you can also quickly google "ISU results (competition)". For example, Grand Prix Final 2015:
There you can access the judges scores for the competion as pdfs.
So you want to watch figure skating?:
This blog is really helpful. They have various guides to figure skating as well, but be aware that they are of course up to date with the newest rules. But they also have a handbook with terms you will often hear and may want to use!
Further Notes:
Scoring in figure skating is highly controversial and in conversation with fans you will often hear terms such as over- and underscoring.
There is corruption, there is favoritism...you name it, figure skating probably has it...
If you want your characters to be upset about something in the sport, scoring is one of your safest bets.
You can have Yuuri's fans and probably Viktor too, be outraged by Yuuri's too low PCS, or the low GOE on his step sequence. Maybe they even rated that one a level 3 instead of the usual 4? Lot's of possibilities for frustration...
Another thing that is frustrating for Yuuri in particular is that jumps are worth so much more and make up a big chunk of the TES.
He is known for his intricate step sequences. But what does that matter if he can't get more than 5.4 points for it? And you rarely get full +3 GOE! The step sequence, which is such a vital part of a figure skating program and show cases such a varried skill set, is worth roughly the same as a triple flip max...
Sure there is the PCS, but here the judges are often biased, or simply don't know how to award points. It sometimes appears to be a bit arbitrary. Skaters who do a shit tone of cross overs suddenly get skating skill scores in the 9 point + range... It's bizarre.
Tumblr media
Anyway...I hope you enjoyed this guide and find it usefull! I will try to get the other parts to this out as soon as I can!
And if you read this far: thank you <3 Have a lovely rest of your day and have fun writing!

alright yoi fam, I'm missing everyone and need to slam fic in my eye orbs so- Gimmie a few of your fave yoi fics, any pairing and rating and tag mutuals to keep the train going
1. Fanboy by @arkhamcycle (Teen)
"Love!!! on Ice" is sure to be the greatest Wattpad-hosted love story of Viktor's day. At its center are Viktor's idol, world-renowned figure skating champion Yuuri Katsuki, and the silver-haired boy whose heart he steals--Vitaly Nikulichev.
Yeah. Vitaly Nikulichev. Sure.
In which Viktor is 15 and writes Wattpad self-insert RPF about himself and Yuuri, and all hell breaks loose.
2. Call Everything on the Ice by @shysweetthing (Explicit)
Victor learns Japanese while in Hasetsu. He doesn't tell Yuuri, and things get dicey when he overhears Yuuri and Mari talking about him in Japanese. Repeatedly.
(The subtitle of this fic should be: Victor Nikiforov really needs a hug. Luckily, he gets one. Eventually.)
~~~
“No,” Victor says, skating up to Yuuri on the ice, “you have to push all the way from here, or you’ll never get the height you need for that axel.” He sets his hand on Yuuri’s ass, tracing the muscle group he’s referring to. “Not here.” He taps Yuuri’s thigh. He doesn’t know the words for the muscles in English, only knows how to show him.
Yes, technically he’s grabbing Yuuri’s ass, but how else is he to communicate?
3. Undiscovered Country by @shysweetthing (Explicit)
Yuuri wakes up in Victor’s room the night after the Sochi Grand Prix Final banquet. Did they sleep together? No. Instead, last night, Drunk Yuuri taunted Victor that he hadn’t earned the right to get in his pants…and spelled out exactly what Victor would have to do to get there.
Now, Victor intends to do everything on that list…
~
“The conversation,” Victor says, “went something like this. You said I wasn’t getting in your pants that easily.”
Victor says this in a normal tone of voice. Anyone could hear him. Yuuri looks around, but if anyone is paying attention, they’re pretending not to.
“Naturally, I asked what I would have to do to get in your pants.”
“Ah.” Yuuri blushes. “How embarrassing. What do you mean, naturally? Why would you ask that?”
Victor tilts his head. “Because I want to get in your pants. I thought that much was obvious by now.”
4. Winter Song by @proantagonist (Explicit)
The set of Yuuri’s mouth softened into a private smile as Victor squeezed his knee beneath the table. His hands were bare, free from the gloves he so often wore when they were together on the rink, and the heat of his palm burned straight through the denim of Yuuri’s jeans. He slipped his own hand beneath the table and found Victor’s. Hidden from sight, their fingers began to flirt and play. A secret conversation all their own that needed no words.
Yuuri was aware that at some point—a moment in time he couldn’t quite place—Victor had become his boyfriend.
There wasn’t a single instant when it happened. It was a slow awareness, as if Victor had silently been asking the question for months now, and Yuuri had been giving him the answer a little more with each passing day.
Hi! can you write something about; reader are in a relationship with Lando and through Carlos, his best friend, she meet Charles, with whom she become very close. Charles becomes her best friend, but Lando starts to feel jealous and afraid that her might leave him for Charles ?
Lando was looking at you, he was trying to push those thoughts away, he didn't want them. He trusted you, he loved you and knew you loved him. You had a strong relationship. But the way you were leaning against Charles side, laughing at him and joking about the stuff he was showing you on his phone... It made his stomach turn.
Carlos had already kicked him under the table. He had texted him a stop looking at then like that, cabrón message. He knew his friend was right. But he also knew he wasn't all wrong. Charles was Charles fucking Leclerc. He was pretty. He drove for Ferrari. He lived in Monaco. Well, technically so did he, but Charles was from Monaco so it was different. There where many things about Charles that were better than him. Why wouldn't you want Charles?
The dinner was long and tedious.
"I think I'm going back to the hotel" He muttered when you guys started talking about this place to go and have some drinks.
"Lando, babe. Are you okay?" You said taking his hand on yours. You even checked his temperature by pressing a hand to his forehead.
"Yeah, just a little headache. But you go and have fun with them." He kissed your forehead as a sign of goodbye.
But you didn't let go, you grabbed his arm and pulled him closer. "I'm going with you. I'm all worried now, Lando"
That's how you end up going back to the hotel soon. But you were suspicious. He surely didn't have a headache.
"What's wrong?" You said when you were already on your pijamas.
He was laying in bed and scrolling down his phone. He had an arm behind his head and he looked perfect. Like a sad puppy but perfect.
"My head is just..."
"Bullshit" You climbed on his lap and he dropped his phone. "What's really bothering you?" You said cupping his cheeks.
He swallowed. He knew you well enough. There was no scape from this. "Charles"
"Charles?"
He nodded and picked the cord from your sweats to distract himself.
"What's has Charles done to bother you? He is my friend but I can easily fight him"
A little smile formed on Lando's lips. But it was a sad smile.
"Everything"
"I'm confused, Lando" You whispered.
"You would be better with him" He muttered and tried to push you of his body. But you wrapped yourself around him and didn't let go. You both fell on your sides on the bed.
"Lando" You made him stop fighting you. "I don't want to be with Charles. Charles is not what I want and need"
"Charles is perfect" Lando sourly said. "He is much better than..."
You stopped him with a long and deep kiss.
"Charles is no way much better than you, my love. Charles is Charles and you are you. And I don't know what is going around this big head of yours but... I will always chose you over Charles. There is nothing he can give me that could make me happier than I'm right now with you"
Lando felt week. He wanted to cry. These feeling about Charles and you had been going on for the longest time and he was exhausted. So he dropped himself on your chest and let you hug him.
"I love you so much, Lando. I only want you. No Charles, Carlos or Leonardo Dicaprio."
"You are probably too old to catch Leo's eye" He joked. But you heard his voice and you know he was tired and probably wanted to cry.
"You are mean" You whispered and kissed all over his face. "I love you, Lando. Only you and for as long as you want me"
He cuddled closer to you and kissed your neck. "I love you too, babe"
"Sleep, okay? I'll be right here when yoy wake up"
Lando closed his eyes and focused on your hands moving on his hair. He believed you. He always believed you.
BENNY !!!!!!!!! Yoy were born in 1984 , yes ? : ) What was ur favorite thing(s) from your childhood/the 80s ?!?!
(ALSO THIS BLOG IS SO FUN !!!!!!!ACK !I WISH YOU THE BEST CRIMFCKEYT )
I was!! How'd you know!
My favorite thing.. Jeez, that's a hard question! I mean, a lot of things technically are still around today.. I guess I really just miss how colorful everything was! Sure, there's some colorful .. Advertisements nowadays, but back then it was like, everything you wore was the brightest and most ridiculous thing you could find! It was a delight, in my opinion, but some disagree!
Gosh, but, actually.. My favorite thing might be blockbuster stores. I didn't really get the childhood that so many 80s kids seemingly had.. But, every friday my mom would take me to a blockbuster store and let me pick out a movie! And that was the best day of every week, because then I'd come home and watch the movie over and over with Jenny, and gosh, she really hated my taste in movies! She would always throw a fit! But she could never turn me down. Denny could only sit through one run of the movie and then get bored. I loved scanning the aisles for a good film, it really just isn't the same anymore.
Don't get me started on computers— We had an old IBM and it was fantastic! When I was allowed on it, which was rarely, I'd play Cosmic Crusader for the entire time!
I really miss simple days like that, but I would never want to go back to my childhood. Besides, I can still do all these things! I just have to make a 40 minute drive to get to a video store now..
//THANK YOU!! it is very fun :) He rambles too much.. I'm still waiting for my friend to revive so we can do some actual rp n storytelling (hopefully)! Dialogue is fun but it's hardly like writing to me..
Monthly Fandom Faves: January 2023 (HP Edition)
I miss reccing and want to get back into it this year, but without the pressure I put on myself when I adhere to specific themes or categories. I'm going to experiment with unthemed recs of a few things I loved each month instead as a way to keep this lowkey and fun for myself. I'll do separate posts for each fandom so they're more useful for the rest of you. I've got Wolfstar and Jily fics for you in this first one for HP :)
Fics reviewed below the cut, from longest to shortest:
Bird Set Free by @mollymarymarie
but tonight your hand is steady by @broomsticks
Posting this early because (1) my cat's first adoption anniversary is Tuesday and she deserves my full attention and (2) I have no chill.
Bird Set Free by MollyMaryMarie
(Remus/Sirius, E, 68k and counting)
Remus Lupin is a Welsh figure skater who hasn't quite been able to find his rhythm. Until world renowned Russian figure skater (and Remus' celebrity crush) Sirius Black shows up to coach him.
Imagine Yuri! On Ice, make it Wolfstar, and take away any need to appease television censors. That is this fic. (No previous YOI knowledge required.) Our resident queen of sexual tension has done it again. Maybe I'm biased because I had the honor to serve as Molly's technical beta for the figure skating specifics, but this fic is a romp from start to finish. Prepare yourself for some secondhand embarrassment, a need to scream at Remus Lupin for his obliviousness, and an overwhelming urge to give poor Sirius a hug when he's just out here trying his best to win over his crush. Pete is all of us with his complete exasperation with these two, and his snarky commentary is honestly my favorite part of the fic.
Pete held his hands up in surrender. “That’s the last I’ll say about it.” “Thank you,” Remus exhaled heavily. “Unless you need to gush about how hot he is.” “Oh, I absolutely will need to do that.” “But I will definitely not mention if he gushes about how hot you are.” “Well, he won’t, but if he does, then, okay, I mean, you should tell me about that.” Pete blinked at him. “There are a lot of rules here.”
but tonight your hand is steady by leftsidedown
(Lily Evans character study, T, 2k, implied major character death)
Five times Lily walked away and one time she stayed. Canon compliant.
Jackie wrote this way back in October and gifted it to me, and I only just left a real comment on it this month because I'm the worst. It made me so happy to revisit it again though, because it's a melancholy, nuanced portrayal of Lily and her experience coming of age as a Muggleborn—of being of two worlds but belonging in neither. Jackie has a gift for saying a lot with very few words, and this story exemplifies that. Each cleverly chosen vignette is a bruising portrait of the character I've sought out in fanfiction from the very beginning—more than 15 years ago—and it's such an honor that she thought of me when writing this little beauty for MCD fest.
She should have turned around to give them one last wave. Had they known that she hadn’t wanted to leave them behind—any of them? She just hadn’t known how to bring them along.
Thank you, darling! <3
So. Today has been a weird day.
Rambles below, because I’m in my feelings but that doesn’t necessarily have to be your problem.
The first thing I saw when I woke up today was that Ice Adolescence had been cancelled. The second thing piece of news I received, within a few minutes of this, was that my Grandma had passed away.
The second thing is more personal, and I haven’t come here to talk about that - I suppose more than anything it’s to give context on today’s slightly weird vibe, and why I’m feeling perhaps more nostalgic than I would be normally.
Perhaps as a distraction, I want to ramble about YOI.
Though now I’ve sat down to actually do this… where do I start?
Though my internet presence is very TKEM-focused nowadays, since its release, YOI has always been incredibly dear to me. It came out just as I had found out that my family were going to be moving across the country (and ok, in the UK that’s maybe less of a big deal than if I lived in a larger country, but I was 14, and 14 is a horrible age, so it was still a big deal to me). YOI came out in late 2016, we moved at the beginning of 2017, and I joined a much smaller school with… let’s say less choice for the people I could make friends with.
I was, technically, adopted by a friendship group, but it took a long time, some falling outs within the group, and me learning everything there ever was to know about BTS despite having no real passion for music-based fandoms for me to really feel included. The friendship group I’d left behind was much more diverse in terms of interests, and we thrived on mutual sharing and acceptance of each other’s interests. This new one was more kind of “conform or fuck you,” and I never quite managed to conform properly.
All that is to say… while I didn’t really have friends, in 2017, I had YOI and its fandom. While I was dealing with the huge changes in my life, I was comforted through it by, more than anything else, lurking around the YOI fandom. I had my first forays into posting things online using Google+, of all things (my parents didn’t let me have social media, but I could access this using my gmail), and they were drawings I had done of YOI characters, even a hand-drawn anecdote comic thing, and just… it was rudimentary, but you gotta start somewhere, right?
It became what I was known for, in my new school. It became part of me. That summer, my family went on holiday to Orlando FL to do the theme parks, and despite that having been something that I’d been begging to do for years, what I ended up being most excited about was the opportunity to go to Hot Topic and buy the YOI merch that they’d recently announced. I bought a T-shirt, a blanket, and a backpack, and although the backpack’s strap broke after a year of using it for school, I still have the T-shirt and the blanket, and they’re still special to me to this day. Back then, listening to the soundtrack on repeat, I’d decided that one day I was going to perform a dance routine to ‘In regards to love: Eros,’ and at the end of my first year of uni, that was something I was actually able to do. Was it good? Not really, I’m by no means a professional dancer, but I felt like I was paying homage to my inner… not quite child, more like my inner angsty teenager?
My whatsapp background is still YOI-themed. I still proudly display my Funko Pops and my posters in my bedroom at home. YOI is still my comfort show, and though I’m not usually one for rewatching shows, it’s still the show that I’ve rewatched the most. Even my username is a relic of my ties to the YOI fandom - though I wasn’t really using it much then, it’s something I thought up during the days when I was deepest in it, and I thought to myself “if I ever am brave enough to really start posting things online, this is the username I’ll use.” So even though the first thing I ever posted under the name KitKatsudon was the beginning of a BTS fanfiction on Quotev on all places that I was writing with a friend of mine at the time, it has its roots in YOI.
It’s sort of funny - once upon a time, I used to semi-joke that I couldn’t die before the YOI movie came out. Don’t get me wrong, my mental health was never bad enough that I had actually realistically considered not making it to Ice Ado’s release, but every time I said it, I did mean it. No matter how shitty I felt, I had to keep going, because I was going to have my bum in a seat when it eventually released in cinemas. I guess what this means now is that, unless Ice Ado is picked up by another studio, I’m just never going to die 🤷‍♀️ you’d better buckle the fuck up, mortals, because MAPPA has just granted me ultimate power.
What am I trying to say? I don’t really know. Maybe thank you, to the YOI team, for being such a positive force in my life. You gave me something comforting to hold onto while everything around me was changing, while I was starting my sexuality journey, while I didn’t have the close support of peers to help boost my mood. I don’t watch the show so often nowadays, but that’s because I save it for instances where I really need comforting. Maybe like today.
The story of Ice Adolescence may be over, at least for now, but I’ll always be grateful for what we did get.
Hello, darling! For the OC outfit doodle ask: ☠ OC in what they would wear to a funeral - Dottie in a Victorian mourning gown, please! 💕 Thank you! 💕
My dear Susie! <3 as always, such great joy seeing you in my inbox!!
AND AM ACTUALLY HAPPY YOU BROUGHT ME THIS ASK, because I honestly NEVER had the idea of portraying Dorothea in a Victorian Mourning Gown, so THIS WAS TRULY THE PERFECT OCCASION TO DRAW HER!
So, here you have it.
"GHOST OF A ROSE" robe for Dorothea!! <3
Tumblr media
NOW. A little bit of info behind this piece.
Due to Mourning being such an important period during the Victorian period, certain rules of etiquette were supposed to be followed, along with the fact that the period of mourning depended on the relationship that the person had with the departed.
For Dorothea, since she is mourning her beloved mother, the period of time she would be wearing black clothes would be of one year, and she would be discouraged to participate in social events for at least 6 months.
If one wanted to be technical, the whole ensemble that I depicted here should have been the deepest of black, because that was the only acceptable colour until the half-mourning period began.
However, I have to be honest, for artistic reason, I took a couple of liberties.
I decided to go with a late 1870s-early 1880s cut of the robe because that reflects the time when her mother passed but the capelet is not reflective of that period of time; instead, I went with a capelet that reflects more the late 1850s - early1860s cut.
The reason for it was that, because that particular capelet was Crawford's gift to Dorothea one winter, and ever since her father's death in 1868, she had been holding it for dear life to it, especially after losing her mother as well.
As for the colouring, instead of going pitch black, I also took some liberties, especially after seeing a beautiful picture of a dark red/black rose, which was just PERFECT both because the colours were beautiful AND because of all the meaning behind Dorothea starting to wear black with crimson, instead of her signature white and red (spoiler alert, she would not resume wearing white until Emmett's birth).
SO THERE YOU HAVE IT.
I HOPE YOU WILL LIKE IT.
Again, it's just a quick sketch, so forgive the roughness of it all <3
YOI meta: How the beach scene solves the conflict in episode 12
Ever since I first watched Yuri!!! On Ice, its ending has been bugging me because the conflict between Yuuri and Viktor never felt truly resolved. It was during yet another rewatch when I finally discovered that Yuuri and Viktor indeed make up in a way that doesn’t require any further elaboration between the two of them. And it happens right before Yuuri's free skating.
But let's first make a short trip back to episode 4 when Viktor drags Yuuri to the beach after avoiding him. Their conversation reveals that Yuuri hates it when people pressure him and treat him as if he’s weak. Viktor then asks what kind of persona Yuuri wants him to take on, indicating that he's used to that kind of thing. Yuuri strongly rejects the idea of Viktor taking on any role for him at all because he wants Viktor to be himself.
Tumblr media
“I want you to stay who you are, Viktor. I’ve always looked up to you. I ignored you because I didn’t want you to see my shortcomings. I’ll make it up to you with my skating!”
While Yuuri is unaware of his feelings for Viktor at this point in the story, these words are nothing but his love language. For half his life, he admired Viktor from afar and wanted to get to know the man behind the dazzling façade. There are recurrent hints throughout the series that Viktor was lonely and depressed before Yuuri and that Yuuri is the first person showing an interest in the human Viktor Nikiforov. Thus, Yuuri telling Viktor to be himself is big because he gives Viktor the space to be himself.
From the conversation on the beach, Viktor can infer two things that will become important later:
Yuuri deeply cares for Viktor's well-being.
Anxiety and self-esteem issues prompt Yuuri to act in ways that defy common sense and might result in Yuuri denying himself what he desires most (at least at first glance).
Viktor's insight boils down to the following line, which represents his love language:
“I won’t let you off easily, then. That’s my way of showing my love.”
Tumblr media
The beach scene defines their relationship and their unique love language. Technically, it's the pivotal point of their love. The promise they give each other enables them to thrive as human beings: Viktor needs a space where he can be himself and Yuuri needs someone who stops him from denying himself his dreams, and both find this in one another.
Now fast-forward to episode 12!
In his misery, Viktor is blind to Yuuri’s true intentions (I explore certain aspects of Viktor’s reaction to Yuuri's declaration to retire in greater detail here). Whether he doesn’t want to return to competition because he found a new purpose in coaching or only wants to come back if Yuuri continues skating, or his reasons are a convoluted mess that includes these aspects is of little relevance in the face of the anguish Yuuri’s decisions unleash. Viktor is hurting because the idea of returning to a sport that caused burnout and depression while never seeing Yuuri skate / never coaching Yuuri again kills him from the inside.
However, Yuuri is gloriously unaware of Viktor’s struggles. In addition, his core issue “never being enough” caused by his short programme scores distorts the conclusions he draws from Viktor’s behaviour, which cements his decision to retire. He’s well aware he stole Viktor from the sport, as numerous people pointed it out to him throughout the series. He knows Viktor dodged all questions about comeback and retirement. He saw Viktor watching the other skaters with interest. He feels (or believes to feel) that a part of Viktor wants to return to the ice. And no matter how strongly his mental issues influence him, he isn’t entirely wrong.
“I don’t want to end it here, Viktor. I want to be in figure skating with you forever. But your staying on as my coach means slowly killing you as a competitive skater.”
Viktor once had a love for the ice, it only needs to be reignited. No one knows this better than Yuuri who months ago, was close to retiring himself - a sentiment that stuck with him for a long time because he thought he isn’t good enough for the sport. He only kept going because, through Viktor’s help, he started trusting in himself. Yuuri doesn’t want Viktor to neglect his own passion any longer because of him. Even though Viktor can’t see it right now, Yuuri’s decision to sacrifice his career for his love issues from his agape. However, by choosing retirement, Yuuri acts against his own desire.
Tumblr media
Before his final skate, Yuuri reaches out to Viktor, resorting to their conversation on that day on the beach. (Note that in ep. 4 Viktor reached out when Yuuri was in distress—oh how I love the symmetry!) On a surface level, his words refer to Viktor’s pep talk, but like so often in Yuri!!!, there are layered meanings. As Yuuri reminds Viktor of the promise they gave each other that day on the beach, Viktor finally understands that Yuuri made his decision out of love.
However, eight months with his nervous katsudon have taught Viktor to recognise when Yuuri is self-sabotaging and he has gained a basic understanding of how Yuuri’s mental issues impact him. He knows Yuuri loves the ice and so he doesn’t let Yuuri take the easy way out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is an appeal to Yuuri's competitiveness and I will die on this hill. With that free skating Yuuri just delivered, he threw down the gauntlet and Viktor accepts the challenge, appealing to Yuuri's ambition and competitiveness as competing against Viktor has always been Yuuri's dream. Ingenious bastard!
Here, Viktor ignites the spark in Yuuri to stay in competition. I don't buy that he used Yurio for this. He's not manipulative. Yurio only infers from Viktor's distress that his greatest rival plans to retire and gets mad. Yurio beating Yuuri by a hair's breadth is the last straw to make Yuuri change his mind.
Tumblr media
It's the promise from the beach scene that ends Yuuri and Viktor's conflict and elevates their relationship to an even higher level where Viktor can thrive as his true self as coach and competitor while Yuuri doesn't need to forgo his greatest dream of competing against Viktor. It's a perfect ending for each character arc as well as their arc as a couple and all it required was a reminder of the pivotal point of their love for each other.
Episode 12 portrays both the inner struggles of Yuuri and Viktor as well as their love with painful acuteness. Even though they know each other well, even though they share life and love, their situation at the end of episode 11 ignites a conflict that brings both their issues to the front. Given the circumstances, they handle the entire situation with amazing maturity whereas other adult couples would have split up. And they solve it beautifully by using their unique love language, thus giving each other what they need. "I want you to stay who you are" and "I won't let you off easily", indeed.
This discovery totally reshaped my conflicted feelings about the ending into a sense of satisfaction and closure, knowing that Yuuri and Viktor will continue growing and thriving together and that they have the means to solve every crisis that might occur. As a fan, I couldn't wish for a better ending and I have the greatest respect for the creators that they solved the conflict so swiftly given the limited time frame.
Every time I think it's impossible to love this show even more, I discover something that proves me wrong.
If you enjoy my meta posts, please consider giving my blog a follow or checking out my works on AO3(link in bio). You will find the results of my meta musings in there!
Anonanon
ah well. technically i have contact with my brother, cousin, and aunt.
(arc, i have no idea why im telling you this). they aren't very kind and considerate people. they keep trying to make me something im not, make me do things i dont want to do. they aren't interested in "Indigo, their eldest child and service pokemon professor" theyre interested in "Indigo, the chosen of Uxie and the heir to the family".
so i no longer have contact with them. they aren't interested in who i actually am, so i am not interested in them.
💞what's the most important part of a story for you? the plot, the characters, the worldbuilding, the technical stuff (grammar etc), the figurative language
I'm not sure how to call it, but the "history of the characters" or the "character backstory" I guess? It's sort of the reasons and motivations for a character to do certain things or to behave and be a certain way.
It's not something I actively prioritize to do. I just find myself constantly questioning why a character is Like That or trying to answer what a character would do or say next. I think it's just that I like things to Make Sense 😅 and if things Don't Make Sense, I can't move on or put it down on paper. This has the happy effect of many wonderful hours of worldbuilding and imagining backstories in my head, and hopefully a good portrayal of In Character characterization, but it does mean that I find it extremely difficult to write Porn-Without-Plot and crack type fics 😅
🕯️-> 🔥was there a fic that was really hard on you to write, or took you to a place you didn't think it would take you?
A few, but I am going to point to Watch Me Catch the Sky for this ask /)_(\ This is an unfinished (if we're going to be honest here) YOI Fantasy AU fic with dragons and magic and prophecies. I wrote it for a Big Bang (my first big bang in any fandom) and while I am proud that I finished it to where it was, this is maybe the fic I've agonized over and rewritten the most.
To be fair, I think a lot of my feelings about this fic are coloured by my experience with the event community, which was...not great. The YOI fandom was a whole other level of drama tbf, but just how much reality fell short of my expectations was quite the learning experience and really made me think about my writing process and what what works for me personally.
Also, in reference to my answer about my writing style in your previous ask, I was constantly worried that my prose was not flowery enough for high fantasy so that didn't help in terms of stress 🙃
🧿what steps do you take to not take things personally if a fic doesn't do well, or if your writing/posting/sharing experience isn't going how you'd like it to?
Hmm. I respond quite differently to the writing experience not going how I'd like it vs the posting/sharing experience not going how I'd like it.
For the latter, in the best way possible, I'm pretty used to being ignored so not getting enough attention isn't too big of an issue for me?😅 But, some things I've done to mitigate the disappointment of a fic not being received as well as I would like after posting are:
So having fewer hits/kudos/comments on a fic on Ao3 isn't too much of an issue for me anymore (tumblr has trained me well, you're the only one who really interacts with me on this hellsite lol) BSome things I've done to mitigate the disappointment of a fic not doing as well as I hoped after posting are:
Write for the sake of writing, not for the reception. I do gain enjoyment from simply writing like I appreciate the mental break from work/real life; I like the sense of accomplishment I have when I manage to create something and bring it into existence; I like the effort it takes to order my thoughts in order to put them down into words (it makes me feel sane and makes things Make Sense eheheh).
I get feedback while writing and cheerreaders to spur me on! This means that the itch/need to be Validated TM is already partially/mostly scratched, so when I do post, the need is lessened.
Ultimately, I recognize and acknowledge that how other people receive my work is something out of my control. So I try not to overanalyze the stats on my posted fics (I do enough of that for a living and also having zero interaction on a post is nothing new. Tumblr has trained me well lol).
However, when the writing experience doesn't go how I like it, I tend to:
Cry
Scream
Beg my fic to write itself
Complain to friends
Do something mindless like wash the dishes so that I can think through whatever is blocking me from writing
Change up my writing process like write on paper
Just copy over a WIP into a new doc (it just gets me typing and editing and is surprisingly effective in kickstarting a writing session)
Accept that my draft is going to be shit but who cares it's a draft
Make a blood offering to the writing gods
Disclaimer: Some of the things I listed above are jokes and I don't actually do but you can decide for yourself which ones :)
