dougray scott as thomas fairfax in to kill a king (2003)
#fairfax#THREE CHEERS FOR MY DEAREST WILES WHO FOUND THIS FILM FOR ME a champion and a saviour.........i love you so much wiles :-D#ok. ok. this film. ok. i have some Things To Say#first of all though i should preface my Thoughts by saying i had the time of my life watching this film it was an absolute blast#perhaps The most historically inaccurate film i have ever seen but that's why it was FUN#i mean of course i would have enjoyed it a lot more if it had been even slightly close to the history it was representing but You Know#i have to put a spoiler warning here now in case you are planning on watching it (i would not recommend it unless you are me) because the#plot is so far away from the actual history of the period that it is basically a different story altogether. and not even a GOOD story#also tw for discussion of child loss because it's That Sort Of Film#i dont even know where to begin. what do i say. if i went through all the problems i would just be describing the film from start to finish#in terms of things i liked: dougray scott was not......too bad? he was ok. i actually think he could have been fine if he was in a better#film despite not looking particularly like fairfax (long dark hair and moustache does not a fairfax make) but i liked the little moments of#joviality he showed :-) there were some sweet bits. i liked him pouring water on cromwell's head to wake him up#i mean i dont think fairfax would ever have done that but in the context of the film it was quite nice......it made me smile :-)#also i thought he did a good job conveying the Utter Exhaustion of mid-to-late 1640s fairfax. thats a crucial aspect of a good fairfax#i mean the film was REALLY going for a fairfax/cromwell good/evil dichotomy with cromwell as the Absolute Worst Human Man Alive and fairfax#as a Noble Valiant Conflicted Champion who can Save Cromwell from Darkness by virtue of his Pure Goodness#which was :-/ eh. bad#fairfax did have a very good reputation and was largely beloved by contemporaries but he wasnt a foil to cromwell's Evil thats just silly#it did make me laugh that it was like the plot of a romance though. cromwell is the dark brooding man and fairfax is the innocent young girl#who has to save him through Love#ooh whilst we are talking about love. they RUINED anne they RUINED her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! aaahh!!!!!!!!!!!#anne fairfax was the coolest lady of the civil wars she rode around with fairfax and stayed in camp with him on campaign and got captured at#one point she was SO COOL and they just made her this cardboard cutout Sultry Wife archetype who exists only to have a tragic miscarriage#and symbolise fairfax's Inner Conflict#it sucked. it was horrible. i hated everything about the miscarriage subplot#ESPECIALLY BECAUSE!!!!!! THAT NEVER HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE.........HHHHHHHHHHHHH#ok i just wrote so many tags and then tried to save the post and they all disappeared. so now i am going to cry#and continue them in the next gifset! i have several more to post >:-3c he he he#ghost post
