#i love online archives . i'm having an amazing time

Look if there's one thing, just one thing, that I wish everyone understood about archiving, it's this:
We can always decide later that we don't need something we archived.
Like, if we archive a website that's full of THE WORST STUFF, like it turns out it's borderline illegal bot-made spam art, we can delete it. Gone.
We can also chose not to curate. You can make a list of the 100 Best Fanfic and just quietly not link to or mention the 20,000 RPFs of bigoted youtubers eating each other. No problem!
We can also make things not publicly available. This happens surprisingly often: like, sometimes there'll be a YouTube channel of alt-right bigotry that gets taken down by YouTube, but someone gives a copy to the internet archive, and they don't make it publicly available. Because it might be useful for researchers, and eventually historians, it's kept. But putting it online for everyone to see? That's just be propaganda for their bigotry. So it's hidden, for now. You can ask to see it, but you need a reason.
And we can say all these things, we can chose to delete it later, we can not curate it, we can hide it from public view... But we only have these options BECAUSE we archived it.
If we didn't archive it, we have no options. It is gone. I'm focusing on the negative here, but think about the positive side:
What if it turns out something we thought was junk turns out to be amazing new art?
What if something we thought of as pointless and not worth curating turns out to be influential?
What if something turns out to be of vital historical importance, the key that is used to solve a great mystery, the Rosetta stone for an era?
All of those things are great... If we archived it when we could.
Because this is an asymmetric problem:
If we archived it and it turns out it's not useful, we can delete.
If we didn't archive it and it turns out it is useful, OOPS!
You can't unlose something that's been lost. It's gone. This is a one way trip, it's already fallen off the cliff. Your only hope is that you're wrong about it being lost, and there is actually still a copy somewhere. If it's truly lost, your only option is to build a time machine.
And this has happened! There are things lost, so many of them that we know of, and many more we don't know of. There are BOOKS OF THE BIBLE referenced in the canon that simply do not exist anymore. Like, Paul says to go read his letter to the Laodiceans, and what did that letter say? We don't know. It's gone.
The most celebrated playwright in the English tradition has plays that are just gone. You want to perform or watch Love's Labours Won? TOO FUCKING BAD.
Tumblr media
Want to watch Lon Cheyney's London After Midnight, a mystery-horror silent film from 1927? TOO BAD. The MGM vault burnt down in 1965 and the last known copy went up in smoke.
If something still exists, if it still is kept somewhere, there is always an opportunity to decide if it's worthy of being remembered. It can still be recognized for its merits, for its impact, for its importance, or just what it says about the time and culture and people who made it, and what they believed and thought and did. It can still be a useful part of history, even if we decide it's a horrible thing, a bigoted mess, a terrible piece of art. We have the opportunity to do all that.
If it's lost... We are out of options. All we can do is research it from how it affected other things. There's a lot of great books and plays and films and shows that we only know of because other contemporary sources talked about them so much. We're trying to figure out what it was and what it did, from tracing the shadow it cast on the rest of culture.
This is why archivists get anxious whenever people say "this thing is bad and should not be preserved". Because, yeah, maybe they're right. Maybe we'll look back and decide "yeah, that is worthless and we shouldn't waste the hard drive or warehouse space on it".
But if they're wrong, and we listen to them, and don't archive... We don't get a second chance at this. And archivists have been bitten too many times by talk of "we don't need copies, the original studio has the masters!" (it burnt down), or "this isn't worth preserving, it's just some damn silly fad" (the fad turned out to be the first steps of a cultural revolution), or "this media is degenerate/illegal/immoral" (it turns out those saying that were bigots and history doesn't agree with their assessment).
So we archive what we can. We can always decide later if it doesn't need preserving. And being a responsible archivist often means preserving things but not making them publicly available, or being selective in what you archive (I back up a lot of old computer hard drives. Often they have personal photos and emails and banking information! That doesn't get saved).
But it's not really a good idea to be making quality or moral judgements of what you archive. Because maybe you're right, maybe a decade or two later you'll decide this didn't need to be saved. And you'll have the freedom to make that choice. But if you didn't archive it, and decide a decade later you were wrong... It's just gone now. You failed.
Because at the end of the day I'd rather look at an archive and see it includes 10,000 things I think are worthless trash, than look at an archive of on the "best things" and know that there are some things that simply cannot be included. Maybe they were better, but can't be considered as one of the best... Because they're just gone. No one has read them, no one has been able to read them.
We have a long history of losing things. The least we can do going forward is to try and avoid losing more. And leave it up to history to decide if what we saved was worth it.
My dream is for a future where critics can look at stuff made in the present and go "all of this was shit. Useless, badly made, bigoted, horrible. Don't waste your time on it!"
Because that's infinitely better than the future where all they can do is go "we don't know of this was any good... It was probably important? We just don't know. It's gone. And it's never coming back"

Our true feelings about race and identity are revealed in six words
Tumblr media
This is a poignant article about a project that Michele Norris started that tapped into people's thoughts about race in a profound way--using only six words. This is a gift🎁link, so anyone can read the full interactive article, even if they don't subscribe to The Washington Post. Below are some excerpts from the article:
I have always cringed when the accusations fly about someone allegedly “playing the race card.” It’s usually a proxy for “You’re making me uncomfortable, so please stop talking.” Or a diversionary tactic used to avoid having to speak about race with any kind of precision or specificity. A shorthand for “Just shut up.” And so, in 2010, I flipped the script, turning that accusatory phrase into a prompt to spark conversation. I printed 200 black postcards at my local FedEx Kinko’s on upper Wisconsin Avenue asking people to condense their thoughts on race or cultural identity into one sentence of six words. The front of the cards simply read:
Race. Your thoughts. 6 words. Please send.
I left the cards everywhere I traveled: in bookstores, in restaurants, at the information kiosks in airports, on the writing desks at all my hotels. Sometimes I snuck them inside airline in-flight magazines or left them at the sugar station at Starbucks. I hoped a few of those postcards would come back, thinking it would be worth the trouble if even a dozen people responded. Much to my surprise, strangers who stumbled on the cards would follow the instructions and use postage stamps to mail their six-word stories back to me in D.C. Since my parents were both postal workers, this gave me an extra thrill. Here I was, doing my part to support the Postal Service. Who says snail mail is dead? Half a dozen cards arrived within a week, then 12, then 20. Over time, that trickle became a tide. I have received more than 500,000 of these stories — and more arrive every day, though the vast majority of submissions now arrive through a website portal online. They have come from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Though limited to six words, the stories are often shocking in their candor and intimacy. They reveal fear, disappointment, regret and resentment. Some are kissed by grace or triumph. A surprising number arrive in the form of a question, which suggests that many people hunger not just for answers but for permission to speak their truths. It was amazing what people could pack into such a small package:
Reason I ended a sweet relationship
Too Black for Black men’s love
Urban living has made me racist
Took 21 years to be Latina
Was considered White until after 9/11
Gay, but at least I’m White
I’m only Asian when it’s convenient
To keep the conversation going, I created a complementary website for the Race Card Project, where people could submit their six-word stories online. Over time we added two words to the submission form: “Anything else?” That changed everything. People sent in poems, essays, memos and historical documents to explain why they chose their six words. The archive came alive. It became an international forum where people could share their own stories but also learn much about life, as if it were lived by someone else.
I highly recommend reading the entire article, using the above gift link. As an olive-skinned Italian American, with curly hair, I have often felt like I am a walking Rorschach test for race. Even though I'm classified as "white" in the U.S., I've had people ask me if I'm a Latina, a Native American, Black, Egyptian, Jewish, and even a South Pacific Islander. Given my history, here are my six words on race.
A book is not it's cover.
I welcome people adding to this post their own 6 words on race.

hello, so while reading your analysis, i noticed that you often take into account flower symbolisism in your analysis and they always make so much sense, so, do you recommend any places to do research about flower symbolism? i`ve been trying to look up some stuff about it but all of the websites i consult have different meanings, thank you! (btw your amazing at analyzing)
Hi!
While doing those I start with searching up the Japanese symbolism since they don't have the same flower language as the rest of the world that mostly uses the Victorian one. Of course, Japanese do too but first I look up Hanakotoba. Hanakotoba is rather limited since it includes only a handful of flowers.
The websites which appears often in my researches include:
Petal Republic (which also has a full article on Hanakotoba, and here's the page on more generally flower language)
Lotus Magus has this page among others
The Lindley Library has a website which is not the best to look at but it has the professional seal on it
Then there are more commercial sites (unsurprisingly since they're about flowers) such as leafy place or culture trip
Pansy Maiden has several pages on flower meanings
This one has a lot listed
Here's an archive (similar books are lined up at the bottom)
There's also this Japanese site I look at (I don't know Japanese except for few kanji so I have to use translators)
I try my best to always point that I'm not a professional and have no knowledge of flowers aside from what I can find online, and as you mentioned it, websites love to not have the same information on meanings x0 I pick the symbolism I can find several times (2-4) before writing it. I can write it when I only find it once but only if it truly seems pertinent (and then adds that it's really unsure if it's a correct symbolism)
(Thanks for the compliment, gladly appreciated :>)

Hi hello I just popped by to tell you just how much I absolutely LOVE your art. The dynamic poses, the color, your shapes, you’re very much an inspiration to me for my own art. I was curious if you’d be willing to share your own inspirations/process in drawing? No need to if you don’t feel like it though. Again, thank you for sharing your art with the world.
Gosh, I'm not sure where I'd even start for that...
I don't think I can get into process atm because it changes so much in such tiny ways all the time. I have a basic skeleton of a process, but the rest is all over the place.
As for insperations:
I follow many many artists online and have picked up many small things just from looking at their work and trying to "reverse engineer" their process in my head.
I've noticed I tend to subconsciously "study" artists just by thinking "how do I draw this? Oh this artist drew it that way! Lemme try..." and I do that many many times while drawing.
Example: I look at the way an artist draws hands, then I look at my own hand and try and mimick the position in the artwork.
I study both and try to connect the dots between them. I feel the way my hand moves and the way the bones and muscles flex and relax.
I try and draw broad shapes, then the underlying mechanics of the hand, then I finish things by drawing what we actually end up seeing on the surface.
I dont draw the bones and muscles of a hand and then the skin just to be clear! I just try and keep them in mind as a draw the outlines.
Like a sculpture having a "skeleton" made of two bits or wire. I don't draw the skeleton, I draw the rough blueprint of where everything goes in quick simple lines. Then I build the "clay" on top.
I don't go that in depth every time but it helps to stop and "be more considered" if you have the time and energy.
Now that I think about it, watch sculpting videos!
It's a very similar process to drawing but 3d instead of 2D! I recommend clay sculpture but I'm sure 3d modeling has similar principles too, even if a very different approach overall.
Here are some channels I recommend:
For cute character dioramas with ridiculous fidelity while being very stylised
For impressive fake food that really shows just how much of an illusion art is
For amazing Dino statues with an eye for detail and convincing naturalism
For 2d artists I follow current professional and/or hobby artists, or even old masters who's work is archived in artbooks and social media accounts. All ranging a wide variety or styles, cute, horror, cartoon, realist, ect... and most importantly, the styles wich aren't as easily definable.
The variety of influences is great! As long as you figure out how to pick and dissect the elements that drew you to the work and how to apply your findings to your own work.
My biggest inspirations as a kid where animation (Disney, pixar, ghibli, ect...), manga, Belgian/French comics my dad had as a kid.
I didn't have the patience or means to learn to animate, but these comics had so much life and motion in their panels! I always found American comics really stiff and more difficult to read because of the detail and "realism". I know American comic art can be very expressive and fluid, but for my undiagnosed eye/brain issues...
This:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Was leagues more "readable" than:
Tumblr media
They where literally easier to read.
That comic cover takes me a good few seconds to dissect and process, whereas the two examples above it are instant.
I'm terrible at studying from life due to my poor eyesight and spacial awareness issues, also I have ADHD so, not only is the information my eyes are giving to my brain suboptimal, but my brain is also terrible at processing and reconstructing that information.
Also tracing is a valid way of studying btw, that's how I learnt as a tot and it can be great to try and reverse engineer a finished peice and break it down to it's construction.
Obviously it's not the same as building something from scratch but we're talking within the realms of practice.
I also started trying to "re-learn" some art fundamentals in ways that work better for me, and it's been massively helpful.
I'm already working with fuzzy simplified abstractions of the world around me, so it's horrible trying to see accurately and THEN re-simplify it onto paper.
So something that has helped a lot and I mean A LOT with teaching my brain art basics in a digestible, step by step way, has been:
ART ACADEMY for the DS!
It's great for walking you through art fundamentals in a way that is digestible and no where near as overwhelming as just jumping straight in to a massive, complex, digital art programme.
It gets all the fuss of materials and subject and reference out of the way and let's you just focuse purely on the process of making art itself.
THIS:
Tumblr media
WAS MADE WITH THIS:
Tumblr media
This is the first drawing lesson:
Tumblr media
This is the lesson after that:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is all with the original DS version!
On a tiny screen with very primitive approximations of pressure sensitivity and no opacity or pen size options.
It mimics traditional art making in the sense that you make what you can with what you have and that limitation allows you to focuse on practice rather than get overwhelmed and over correct everything digitally.
These where tiny, crunchy, microcosmic, simplifications of digital art making back in 2009!!!
It's so refreshingly accessible and manageable.
I haven't even started the newer 3ds game that came out.
So if anyone reading is struggling with their art I highly recommend this little art exercise giver! It's helped me a lot.
OK hope that's readable and helpful. ^^

Not like we have a date with destiny
You met Layla online and her visits to your store became more regular.
---
A/N:
it's been YEARS i don't post anything, just silently reading fanficion around. Gotta relearn how to use Tumblr again. I waited one year to watch Moonknight, always wait for the hype to pass because i know i get hyped too and my poor mind can't really take that. I absolutely loved Layla, that's a fact.
as usual, i'm just trying to exercise my english writing skills. I feel like this was a part of a bigger piece but I can't really develop much. Thank you for reading though. Life's been a bit difficult at times. Lots of anxiety and fear of the future. I wanted to get something light.
i'm starting a series, that's why Sersi is mentioned.
my AO3 link if you'd like to see.
-
You met Layla online. She sent a message to the store you worked at looking for a specific book. You attended her on the phone and she went to the bookstore shortly after, paying in cash.
"You're a lifesaver.", she thanked you.
Soon, her visits to the store became more regular. Layla would take her time to read the back of the covers or arrive with a specific request. You became friends over illustrated books though, specially the ones about ancient culture. You told her about your beliefs and about your own culture, finding it amazing when she shared her own story. There was no denying you had a great connection.
"We should go out for drinks.", Layla invited you. "We only meet when you're working or when I need something work related." she'd insist.
It was true. You had never met in other circumstances and knew very little about each other outside duty, except a few things you could notice by yourself. Layla was an interesting woman, she was gentle and polite. Maybe not very social but very friendly anyway. It wasn't hard to slowly fall for her but of course you decided to keep a safe distance. If she didn't like you like that by any chance, you were not up to spoil the friendship you were developing.
"Let's do it tonight then? It's Friday, tomorrow's my Saturday off", you agreed. Was it too soon?
Layla seemed to think for a moment. Almost like she didn't believe it had been so easy. All she had to do was ask. Simple like that. "Okay.", a smile ghosted her lips and she shook her head, as if getting rid of intrusive thoughts. "It's gonna be fun."
Around 6:30pm, when you had closed the store, Layla appeared by the door. She was supposed to text you her location and you'd meet here but she had other plans. "I thought it'd be nice for us to walk there, it's not far from here.", she explained.
Layla was uncaractheristicaly nervous. She was watching her feet as you walked to the bar and you could sense the thick atmosphere. Was she nervous?
"So, i think we could grab something to eat first.", She finally looked at you. "You know, so that we won't get drunk too fast."
You agreed, as easy as it sounds, and suggested a small cantina you liked. You had some pizza and decided to just try their wine, not wanting to leave the cozy place. You drank and ate and talked for hours, leaving only because the owner came talking to you saying it was time for them to close.
Layla walked you home, the cold air sobering you up way too fast. Your night couldn't end better, though you thought that maybe it could. If Layla kissed you goodnight.
You stood by your doorway and bent goodbye and Layla kissed your cheek when you hugged. It happened a few time after that. You went out for drinks or food, hanging out together for log walks, cultural programs and sometimes to watch movies at each other's place.
You were talking about your romantic life when you mentioned the last mess you got involved in. "She was nice and all. Really. We'd go to the museu, to natural parks. We had fun together, i thought we were fine. But then her ex came along and she just disappeared.", you told her, realizing that it didn't really hurt anymore.
Layla listened to you, giving the attention you deserved. There was a hint of something in her eyes and she smiled. "Just like we do? You seem to have a type.", she said, playfull.
You chocked on your drink.
Layla laughed at your antics and gave you a napkin. She kept looking at you, a smile never leaving her face. "I mean, you said she was a Historian, that she worked with museology, and i'm an archeologist. We both like going out for drinks and trying new food, we're both into ancient culture...", she explained.
Your jaw dropped, you were speechless. Layla looked into your eyes and took a big gulp of her wine before dropping the bomb. "We both have a close relationship with our exes, she told you. "I mean, i just got divorced.", her eyes inspected you for the smallest of reactions.
You felt your heart falling on the floor. If she had just gotten a divorce it meant she probably wasn't ready for any romantic bullshit. Part of you was okay with that, because you liked her a lot and were willing to accept what she had to give you. Another aspect she had in common with Sersi.
The other part of you was catching the bitter taste of rejection.
Layla was waiting for you to say something, you knew that. But there were no words for you to use. She seemed to understand the hint and started talking again. "We are friends though. Kinda.", she cleaned her throat. "We work together sometimes.", she explained and noticed you were still silent, which made Layla start to panic. Was it the wrong time? The wrong words?
She took a deep breath. "I don't know where this is going but i'd love for it to continue.", she smiled, almost shy at herself. You nodded and approached her side of the couch way too slowly , kissing the tip of her nose.
Layla relaxed and smiled larger. She placed her hands on your cheeks before kissing you on the lips.

Fiat Lingua Top 10 for 2022
It's been a good year over at Fiat Lingua, the once-monthly conlang journal that's been posting steadily since September, 2011. I created Fiat Lingua over ten years ago with the idea that it could be something like the Rutgers Optimality Archive: A place where conlangers could post work that either they wanted to showcase, or work that was in progress. We've had tons of contributors over the years, and some standout work I'm really proud of.
Behind the scenes, we have a number of metrics available to us, and one of them allows us to know what the top posts are over a given amount of time. So, for fun, here are the top 10 visited posts for this year (though, note, the numbers for the December post will be down a little bit, since it didn't have a full month. Still, though, it's incredible, so if you get a chance, take a look at this full novel Jim Hopkins wrote in his language Itlani).
NUMBER 10
We have a tie...
"Moya Abugida" (June, 2022) by Carl Buck: A detailed description of how to write the unique abugida of the Moya language.
"Die Wichtigkeit von Conlangs in Medien" (November, 2021) by Jonah Behring: A German language article on the importance of using authentically created conlangs in films and television shows.
NUMBER 9
"Wóxtjanato: A grammar" (January, 2022) by Jessie Sams: A conlang by the amazing @quothalinguist about a culture whose planet has suddenly and unexpectedly acquired a second moon.
NUMBER 7
We have a tie...
"Names Aren't Neutral: David J. Peterson on Creating a Fantasy Language" (March, 2019) by David J. Peterson: This was an article I wrote for an online magazine, but then the magazine went under, so I reclaimed it and put it up on Fiat Lingua. It's about why coming with "random" names for sff can often prove problematic.
"Tone for Conlangers: A Basic Introduction" (April, 2018) by Aidan Aannestad: A lot of conlangers are interested in having tone in their language, but don't really know how to go about it, and this is a great introduction.
NUMBER 6
"Afrihili: An African Interlanguage" (April, 2014) by William S. Annis: Afrihili is an a posteriori auxlang from the late 60s that uses Bantu languages as its source, and it is fascinating! One of my all-time favorite auxlangs, and William provides a wonderful introduction.
NUMBER 5
"An Itlani Wedding Blessing" (August, 2014) by James E. Hopkins: A lovely wedding blessing Jim wrote for, if I remember right, a friend's daughter who was getting married.
NUMBER 4
"Dothraki & the Nostratic Super Family" (February, 2015) by Charlotte Peak: For her MA thesis, Charlotte wrote a paper on how Dothraki could fit into the theoretical Nostratic super family. A fun read!
NUMBER 3
"Patterns of Allophony" (April, 2015) by William S. Annis: Definitely one of the most popular papers on Fiat Lingua, William illustrates graphically a number of very common sound changes.
NUMBER 2
"Slides for Linguistics 183: The Linguistics of Game of Thrones and the Art of Language Invention" (September, 2018) by David J. Peterson: In the summer of 2017 I taught a class on language creation at UC Berkeley. I uploaded all the slides I used in that course as one massive .pdf to Fiat Lingua.
And now for the top viewed article for 2022 on Fiat Lingua...
NUMBER 1
"A Conlanger's Thesaurus" (September, 2014) by William S. Annis: This is consistently the most accessed article on Fiat Lingua, and I don't expect that to change. The article is relatively short, compared to the information and use you can get out of it. William Annis details ways in which languages relate words to other similar words. For conlangers who struggle either with coming up with words that are different from English in meaning, or who struggle with coming up with words at all, this reference article should prove very useful. Using the word maps in this article, you might be able to come up with words you never dreamt of before, but words which could exist in some language. A great resource for conlangers who are desperately trying to break out of the influence of their L1 or L2!
* * * * *
And that's it for 2022! I'm looking forward to posting more conlang articles next year. If you are a conlanger, a conlang-researcher, or conlang fan who has something to say in .pdf format about a conlang or conlanging in general, please consider submitting something to Fiat Lingua! We take any and all articles related to conlanging in whatever form you have them. I'm also happy to help you think up ideas, or refine those ideas you have. There is no strong review like in a fancy journal: I just want to get what you have up. I'm especially in interested in hosting personal conlang stories—stories about how or why you started to create a language, or your experience creating your own language—personal stories that are often lost, but are so vital, as there is an absolute dearth of literature about conlangers! If you think you have even the seed of an idea, please get a hold of me! I want to share as many stories and ideas as I can.

Now that I have over 200 followers (wait, what?! and also: welcome, everybody!), I think I should share 10 things to know about my blog.
Tumblr media
Charles Leclerc is king. While I will post other stuff (see 3), 90% will be Charles. You don't like Charles? This is not the place for you.
I'm not a hater. I reserve hate for people who commit animal cruelty, hate crimes, genocide, etc. I like most of the F1 drivers most of the time. Doesn't mean I won't post memes about them, poke fun at them, or even criticize them (yes, even Charles). I've posted my tier list above, in case you're wondering where I stand.
I will post about other things that make me happy. Maybe other drivers, cats, Star Wars, quotes, beautiful nature, architecture, a funny comic, whatever. I only have one blog and I have my occasional "Liked by petit-papillion" days...
I don't ship drivers. While I am not opposed to ships for fictional characters (anyone have a ship name for Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy?), I don't ship real people. I do love the numerous friendships between drivers, and will happily post about my favorite ones.
I don't like posts that overtly sexualize drivers without their consent. Ice bath posted by Scuderia Ferrari? Yes. Butt shot of Charles on his onboard camera? No.
I love data!!! I know not everyone shares this passion, so I try not to turn this into a data-infested snoozefest. But I love F1 stats. Special thank you to blogs like @statsstatsstats, @champagnepodiums, and anyone else gathering data to share with us.
I also love to sleuth! Love the challenge of locating something hard to find online, whether it's an article, a specific photo, location of a video, when that photo was taken, etc. Special shout-out to @chibrary for doing the Racing Lords' work in archiving all that Leclerc history and lore.
I don't have any social media accounts. No Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, Facebook. I only joined Tumblr when I created this blog in February 2023. I am the ultimate lurker (won't disclose how many years I was lurking before finally joining Tumblr, but one of my mutuals and I go waaaay back - even though she doesn't know this). It is definitely a challenge to access content without accounts, especially now that Twitter has recently blocked searches, boohoo.
I'm very private. I may talk about my 2 cats Orion and Magpie, but those are not their real names. I don't like to reveal too much personal information, because damn, people online can be mean.
I love to create beautiful (or informative) posts. Which is why I am here. An outlet for my creativity. I am constantly inspired by the amazing talent on here. Before I started this blog, I'd never screen-recorded or edited a video, never edited a photo on my phone, never made a meme. I'm still learning though. I want to learn how to create gifs. And make beautiful edits. But I do have a very busy life, and I don't always have time.
This also leads me to remind everyone to please bear with me if I don't answer your ask right away. I see you and read your ask or reply, but whenever possible, I want to give thoughtful responses that take time. My inbox and DMs are always open though.
I hope you enjoy my blog as much as I enjoy being on here! 💕

So, I just want to say that Opaque is phenomenal! I loved it and also because of it I finally decided to work on my own original works. Lately been going through whether it's even worth it but seeing you dedicate so much and make Opaque really inspired me. Thanks for being an amazing writer and keep blessing us with your words <3
***CRACKS KNUCKLES***
I want to say that I often still feel the same way as you do now. I think I always have. It's hard because writing is a medium of storytelling that is exceptionally effective and common, but it often gets overlooked and downplayed in place of stuff like painting or music or idk acting/theater. But, to some degree, all of those things still demand writing to know how things will turn out, or what way they'll go.
It's hard sometimes because in our digital age, we've become completely insatiable and disgruntled by the way the world is, by the things pandemic lockdown did to us and I feel like people doom scroll as a way to hide from there damage or try to force a sense of normalcy that just no longer exists.
It's strange bc people consume gratuitously but they don't really want to. We're not meant to. No one I've ever met has ever, truly, wanted to consume, consume, consume blue screens and have irregular sleep patterns but we do it bc it's our "normal".
My point here is that writing is not something you can consume like a ten second short on social media. If you try to tear thru a piece of writing, you're going to miss everything and it'll seem like nothing.
Right now, it's hard to be a writer in both fanfic and otherwise bc ppl don't want to take the time to read, they don't want to take the time to try to articulate their thoughts and feelings for feedback. Interaction with writing on archives like ao3 and sites like tumblr have plummeted bc, I suspect, no one knows how to talk to each other anymore and suffer with the whole "I'm sitting in the room with someone and that's what counts" syndrome.
H O W E V E R
Despite how shitty that all is and how thankless and emotionally taxing writing has become on websites like this (or anywhere), I feel like what makes writers unique is our inherent need to create.
We are storytellers. We feel the stories we want to tell are important. And, I think, most writers feel that significance so deeply that it's agonizing and downright unbearable when these special things we create aren't seen.
I have been writing for twenty years.
I have never gained notoriety. I am not published. I don't make money of the things that I write and share online
But I do it because I am so strongly passionate that my stories are worth telling even if I don't receive validation and agreement from other people.
I'm glad that Opaque was able to inspire you, and as hard as it is and outright miserable it can feel—please create and write your stories. Your work is worth it, and that doubt you and I feel lets us know that we believe it somewhere inside.
I will continue to be the biggest, noisiest bitch on any platform I'm on tho to get my work around. Because you're not going to hole me in a stereotype where writers are supposed to be grateful, bashful creatures who only take what they are given, when they're given it.
Fuck all y'all and take care of your writers just like you do your artists or any other person with a creative outlet 🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻

been watching Star Trek TNG s5...
and it's just such a nice show... probably my comfort show. I found it for streaming online since I don't have the subscription. I left off in season 5 while it was on n-flix and it was easy to find my place again.
first one I watched was "The Perfect Mate" which, first of all, stars the preternaturally elegant Famke Janssen. (link to the Wikipedia page for the episode) Kamala is an empath and she uses her ability to sense others emotions to become the perfect complement to any man she spends time with. First she kisses Riker (because obv) but then she's chaperoned around by Data and flirts with Worf (loved that). But then she spends time with Picard and they kind of slowly fall in love and she ends up accidentally bonding with him instead of her intended husband. And then she leaves. I just think that Patrick Stewart is an amazing actor and I love that he had this amazing romantic story with a woman whom he barely has any physical contact with. It was so bittersweet. I loved it.
it also immediately spawned an AU idea which I would probably end up doing for QuiAni since they are my brain rot right now.
I was also moved by "The Next Phase" to wonder if anyone had ever written Geordi/Ro Laren and I could not find it! the only tagged slash fic for them on AO3 has them in a crossover fic with someone else. I can imagine there either being untagged/incorrectly tagged fic or it remaining on another fic archive.
but I'm kind of stunned that there's nothing. in that episode, they're both put 'out of phase' with the normal sensing world, no one can see or touch them. but they can see and touch each other which leads to a electric moment where they reach out hands and touch them mid-air like this:🙏
and I thought maybe they could have sex about it. no dice.
then I watched "The Inner Light" and just... 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I cried so much about that one. good grief. it was great. that's the kind of sci-fi I really enjoy.

Hi! I've been lurking this blog for awhile, I'm excited to see it's back!
If you're taking requests, do you have any prompts for an AU where Person A is a robot/cyborg/otherwise mechanical being and Person B is a human they befriend? I'm trying to come up with ideas better than the typical "oh I'm a machine I'm not supposed to feel love"
Hey!! We're so glad you stuck around -- even though the live content went on hiatus for a bit, the archive itself is still a great resource, and seeing people continue to use it after all these years is amazing ;-;
We can definitely help you out: platonic android and human AUs, coming right up!
Character B had signed up for the program without a second thought. After all, who wouldn’t want a robot companion to spend time with? All they had to do was report bugs to the company and after a year they would come to collect it. They never expected Character A to walk through their door, and they never expected a robot to be so… human.
Character B had never really gotten into the whole “adding mechanical upgrades” to their body trend. They preferred to live and die the way nature intended, with lots of squishy parts. It was when they met Character A that it really solidified their beliefs, as Character A had gone all out in becoming an android, as they believed that evolution goes too slowly and humans should deck themselves out in the sickest way they can.
A certified genius, Character A is a brilliant scientist on the cusp of achieving greatness. They couldn’t have done any of it without their wonderful AI, who’s starting to become more and more flirty the longer they’re online.
In a distant apocalypse, Character A is a human just trying to survive in a world where robots took over. During their travels, they came across a severely broken down robot and decided to bring it with them for scrap metal. When they got back to Character A’s base, the robot starts to talk and Character A begins to have second thoughts about destroying them, especially after it seems like this robot is more… human.
Character B was an android, a superior race to the humans that they lived alongside. They were created by the humans, sure, but through many years of scientific breakthroughs the androids separated themselves from the humans and, after much bloodshed, became the rulers of the planet. After finding Character A, a lowly human, Character B decides to take them in as a pet. Much to Character A’s dismay.
“I’m a really smart android now, but you took really nice care of me when I was a toaster so… I won’t murder you.”
Also, “You always said thank you after I answered your questions, even though I was nothing but a lowly AI in a phone. Your kindness has spared you.”

When it comes to your original fiction did you post them on tumbler before making them available as an e-book. I want to write original work but am scared of posting it on here or a03.
Hi anon!
I actually personally (I can't stress this enough, this is a me thing) really hate posting (and reading) fic on Tumblr. You can't tag it properly and people can't filter it out effectively, it's a pain to read (lots of scrolling), and it's a pain to archive. So that was definitely never an option for me!
My original novels never went anywhere before they became novels, partly because if you 'dry run' stories like that, Amazon and other distributors can get tetchy and say it's no longer a first edition and sometimes even pull your ebooks offline without enough paperwork, lol. So I just...would not do that because even if it all works out, knowing how other authors have been treated re: this issue, I would not!
I'm a big believer in just kind of taking the leap and putting fic up wherever you feel comfortable. If that's AO3 or Tumblr, then do it! The fear is normal, it is a normal part of writing, and a normal part of facing that gap between 'only I've seen it' to 'now other people will see it.' The good news is you can always delete the fic if you don't like it. On AO3 you can delete any comments you don't like. But those kinds of worst case scenarios are incredibly rare.
What's (sadly) more likely is just that not many people will necessarily read it at first, until more people start finding your writing and your tags, and that can take a little time!
It can be good sometimes to sit down and really figure out what you're scared of re: posting a story. Because a lot of the fears have concrete answers:
Scared of people hating it? Most people will just click away if it's not their thing, and if they try and make it your problem, you can delete and/or block everything to do with them.
Scared no one will notice it? Well, that is actually a normal part of writing for almost all of us when we just start out. You're part of a huge community of writers experiencing exactly the same thing you are. You are never alone as a writer, even when it feels lonely. Sometimes you can find Discords and similar groups to get more notice, but often it's just a matter of taking the time to put more words out there.
Scared someone will be mean to you? Understandable! However, you don't deserve bullying from anyone. Block these people and then go find a space that feels good to you or watch something that feels wholesome or go outside or do something that doesn't feel 'chronically online.' (It's amazing how much trolls don't matter as much when you're looking at a sunset, or eating your favourite food).
These are all pretty universal fears in writing (and the arts) before posting something, and after posting something, and I wish I could tell you they'll all go away one day, but I think what happens for many of us instead is that we learn more tools to deal with these fears. It helps knowing that most folks get them to some degree, and most of us have learned ways to deal with them - that's why authors will tell you to block trolls and delete troll comments, and that's why authors will reassure you that they started out in a place where no one noticed them at first too, and that's why authors will sometimes talk about how folks have been mean to them and how they were impacted by it, but also remembered to ground / reminded themselves who their real friends are - and that doesn't necessarily stop the fear and the pain, but the solidarity can help.
Post your writing on Tumblr (ignore my personal thoughts on Tumblr fiction, that's just my feelings and they are not universal lol, lots of people love Tumblr fics), post it on AO3, post it on Tumblr first and then AO3 later!
AO3 is a great place to put fics, because you can write about anything and put it up literally any time, and even orphan it / make it anonymous or delete it if you want to. You have complete creative control.
You'll never get to see what's on the other side of your fears if you don't take the leap.
But it's also okay if you're just not ready yet. :)

ok i watched rwrb and was live-blogging it for bl archiving purposes:
this was a BEAUTIFUL movie. everything from the colors to the camera angles to the set design was marvelous.
the acting was amazing from both leads but my god. taylor zakhar perez. SIR. still gathering my thoughts over how much this man ruined my life.
I loved the latinx and texan culture they infused all throughout, especially the music
also that the movie preserved the original book's horniness. particularly after the whole heartstopper purity bullshit i think we needed a few gratuitous shots of taylor zakhar perez getting dicked down thank you very much.
the cringe moments were not as bad as i expected. they were mostly the same moments i cringed over reading the book so i appreciated they didn't add to the cringe volume :)
ok IM LYING. there was a movie-specific cringe moment and it was this:
Tumblr media
(because i cannot for the life of me accept that the epitome of privilege prince harry/william avatar would read bernadine evaristo but whatever go off liberal utopia)
did i mention taylor zakhar perez.
ALSO UMA THURMAN. that woman only gets finer with age doesn't she 😩
yeah i hated the email leak thing now just as much as when i read the book. (i did appreciate they tried to infuse some queer coming out politics into it this time around tho. at least i think it was a bigger thing this time around???)
"I have fallen in love with a person who happens to be a man and that man happens to be a prince." congratulating myself for not puking here
i really appreciated all the women in this movie were hot. casting really did us a solid
MISTER GORBACHEV PUT THESE TWO LOVESICK HOMOSEXUALS ON THE PHONE WITH ONE ANOTHER
zahra and shaan......... listen. all i'm saying is i would like to see it.
i already knew stephen fry was going to be the homophobic grandfather but it didn't make it any less enjoyable.
Tumblr media
me when i overshare online
makes you wonder what sort of times we live in that they had to update the president's acceptance speech to reflect the current anti-trans legislation in the US
"wow you really are working class aren't you?" whoever tried to make the script more relatable needs to be fired.
all in all, an okay movie. i didn't go in with high expectations because i didn't love the book, but i liked to see the amount of effort put into making it all very gay. on the whole the plight of the very special prince boy remains supremely unrelatable to me even when it's undercut with the narrative of queerness and acceptance, but i still have hopes this movie ushers in more big budget queer stories that are not about idk. the most privileged people on planet earth. but we might be waiting a while folks ! (at least on this side of the globe)

I wanted to send you a deep heartfelt thank you for all the translations you’re providing the fandom with these days 💕 It must be a lot of hard work to translate and edit the videos + do the research for context (as you did for the school days wishlist video you posted recently 👌🏼)
So thank you so much for putting in all that effort and time and for giving the fandom something to talk about until the lead up to the Gwitch event on 6th August! 🥹
I just finished listening to the school days wishlist corner and it was SOO endearing.. Noto-san reminiscing about her school years was adorable. I always love listening to her speak, and as usual Kana-chan and Lynn-chan were an amazing duo 😭
I was also wondering that if there will be any interesting video material or important info released from the Gwitch school assembly event, will you be translating it? :)
In the meantime, If I could kindly request or suggest a translation for next time..I was listening to an ep of MajoRaji where Kana-chan & Lynn-chan were testing and discussing their character scents that were released by primaniacs and they sounded so cute in that clip! I would love to hear it with a translation if you have the time 🙏🏼🥹
I hope you have an amazing day and thank you once again for your contributions to this fandom! 💕
You're very welcome! :3 Glad that you're enjoying the translations and thank you for the incredibly lovely message~
Videos are for sure a lot of work, but seeing fellow international G Witch fans get into them makes the process well worth the effort and time. I'm gonna be practicing my Japanese regardless and can always use more reps editing, so why not use that to share more of this show that I dearly love, yeah?
The school wishlist corner is such a good slice of the three's dynamic… especially the end, with Kana-chan getting so worked up over making a decision, Lynn-chan just dying of laughter, and then finally Kana-chan gives up and asks mom Noto-san to bail her out lol.
I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for any footage and info coming out of the Festival/Assembly event! Best believe if any interesting bits are released I'll jump on those. bO.O
I remember listening to the episode where they got to sample their character fragrances… I was dying at that part; so much sniffing and they really got into analyzing the scents. xD It's a great suggestion that I'd be down to TL for sure, but unfortunately I don't have access to the original audio; it seems Onsen Radio only keeps the last 10 episodes of MajoRaji online. >.< Hopefully someone out there archived the episode and I come across it at some point…
Cheers!

2022: Greatest hits
Tagged by @musing-and-music, because why not? I've had a very hard year, but there were so many good things. In 2022:
I visited New Mexico, Arizona, and DC! I hiked around the desert, White Sands Park, the Grand Canyon, the Saguaro Park, the Sonoran Natural Museum, SEVERAL Museums and Galleries such as a NUMBER of Smithsonians and the National Gallery, Lowell Observatory, The Flintstones Roadside Attraction and so many other great places! It was so nice to travel for fun and to keep my mind a bit away from stressful stuff.
In those travels, I met @songofsaraneth, @cantodelcolibri, @halohampster, and @lantur in person, most for the first time! Its becoming a trend to go around meeting online friends and honestly, that's such a great life goal. My friends are the best friends.
Also first big Ren Faire!! Long quiet train rides!!
I made very important advances in my self-healing and self-understanding. For long, very painful years I thought I was broken beyond repair, that I would always hurt in those aspects. But I don't hurt anymore. I'm healed, and the scars are becoming paler.
I got closer to people around in the city I live in. Made friends in my cohort and other cohorts, and also in the queer community. All of those people are generous, kind, and a joy to be around - just a message away.
I got sharper at Academia. MIGHT have found a topic for my dissertation already, halfway through my 2nd year. MIGHT.
I also FINALLY had a full-on good experience as a teacher ;_; I was supported and not judged at all for all the (admittedly still traumatic) previous experience on he first semester. It should go better now.
JAIR BOLSONARO ISN'T THE PRESIDENT OF BRAZIL ANYMORE, AND LULA WON
I got into The Magnus Archives and it single-handedly carried me through the end of the first semester. Aside from being amazing, I introduced it to my friends who also loved it, to my mother who ALSO loved it (and it brought us closer!), and met amazing people. I also started writing a TMA longfic that's being a blast to craft.
I didn't draw or paint much, unfortunately... but I went back to animating, and the few paintings I made are really nice.
I had the chance to work with neuroatypical/disabled teens in the summer and it was a super interesting experience. Exhausting af, not perfect at all, but I`d do it again.
I have experienced firsthand being very vulnerable, advocating for myself, and being loved and supported by so many people: friends, family, professors, and strangers. I was going through a lot... but I didn't feel alone. I had to be out there and let people know about how bad things were, and that's awful, but it was worth it because I wouldn't have made it without their care. <3
I RETURNED TO GAMEMAKING! I MADE IT! BY MYSELF!
Guys. I'm alive. I'm in one piece. Healthier than I was. Went through a lot and I'm still kicking and keeping positive. Surviving is huge.
If you feel like it, I invite @lantur, @mikanmockingbird, @secretsfromwholecloth, @songofsaraneth, and whoever feels like doing this.

Hey there
I only found this blog recently and I love it, the story line and the artwork along with it, it's a shame you had to discontinue the comic because I enjoyed it.
There are not many JSAB blogs that I like I'll say, but there's been a decrease in them as the hype went away, I found this in my recommended section after I was going through some hard times myself.
After Afrothunder left the community to fix her mental health problems (she was quite the inspiration and helped me through my darkest hours at one point) there wasn't anything left here in this community a side from a couple of blogs here and there I wanted to start my own blog.
But I ran into a major downfall almost immediately, how do you get people to look at your stuff, I know there are a lot of blogs that don't get noticed and run down to nothing but how did you do it or when did people start noticing your work?
I'm not asking for the sake of followers but for other people who are scared to ask this or have a blog of their own like me.
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it!
I'm still making JSaB art and I've started making a new JSaB AU centered comic (working on chapter 2 atm. 10 pages, fully colored, background + 6 characters) if that's something you wanna see (on my artblog, @zimcard-artblog ) . I haven't made some crisis-au stuff in awhile due to being busy but I'll get back to sharing more lore and other stuff like short comics and whatnot.
Also, yeah, JSaB has been up for awhile. 2 years or so? Man, back in the early days, there were so many early starting comics that were amazing. I honestly miss it back then and wished I was more active like I am right now. Ya' know, the community is still kicking- especially in different social media platforms from my knowledge. I, personally, do NOT suggest Amino. Safe yourself the trouble and back away from it.
Oh! Afrothunder is back from my knowledge but she is doing it in her own pace for the sake of her mental health, it's a genuine shame to hear how someone so talented and kind is being treated so poorly by a bunch of impatient, immature, and even heartless people over her work. This has happened to a lot of people who make popular comics online, often on their own pace, which they tend to run into a bunch of people who are very disrespectful of their personal lives. I've talked to Afrothunder Waaaaaaay back, made an ask collab once with her regarding Blixer and Cyan in this blog. We don't talk now but I like to think of her as an old friend because she was super nice and welcoming back then when we first started talking on the server, it was super neat. Wishing her the best and hope she's doing well right now <:]
> How did you do it or When did people start noticing your blog?
I think it's a matter of getting recognized enough so you can promote any projects you're working on. I started drawing fanart for JSaB the moment I finished watching the playthroughs, it eventually garnered an audience who are into the same media I was in which I gained new followers.
So, basically; get recognized. Tagging your stuff of said media you're basing your post about makes it easier for people to find it. Share some art, doodles, concepts, whatever you have and what you want to share with the people. Eventually you'll notice the numbers rising.
It usually went on like that for me until I end up having an idea- like, "Oh, I have an AU! I wanna share that AU and make a comic out of it!" And so I started sharing small concepts regarding the AU.
Sketches, doodles, designs, short comics, and explanations. It was like an early beta of the project I was working on and when it got enough people interested; That's when you kickstart the final piece that goes "Hey, I made a comic! Check it out!"
If you're doing it on tumblr, really advise to make another blog as a sort of archive for said comic because it makes it easier for people to find the comic and read back to it whenever they want to. Accessibility is key.
This actually applies for making askblogs as well or any sort of extra blog for something specific.
Then, with all of that, you go on your own pace. It's a hard start but you'll be able to go with your own flow, take your time, and remember to prioritize YOURSELF first before other things. If you receive any sort of hate or just weird messages, just delete them on the spot because you are responsible for your own inbox.
That's my two cents on it, hope this helps! If there's anything specific you wanna know. Just ask :3
