That assumes both A) that the horrorterrors know the future and B) that they don't think it can really be changed. Maybe they genuinely thought they could change things, such as by perhaps fulfilling all the requisite loops a different way? Imagine a scenario where a time traveler learns of their death, therefore being destined to die, and instead fake their death to create the conditions under which they learned of the death originally.

It's possible. But if the Horrorterrors do have a way to trick the Alpha Timeline like that, then they've really been holding out on us by not mentioning it to the Players. Such a revelation would completely change the game - we might even be able to fake the Earth's death.

Absolutely! I've got two separate answers for you, depending on what your goal is here.

If your main goal is just to analyse Homestuck, then you’re probably best off picking a language whose syntax is easy to understand, such as Python. You'll pick up on the basic logic pretty quickly, and the ~ATH snippets will start to make a lot more sense.

If you’re actually interested in programming for its own sake, then I recommend you start with my own first language, C. It’s a lot harder for a newbie to get to grips with, but doing so will give you a much more solid theoretical foundation then ostensibly ‘easier’ languages.

W3schools is a decent starting resource for both languages - but if you need more specific guidance, let me know, and I'd be happy to help!

The game rewards him for taking the path of least resistance.

That certainly makes sense if we just look at John - but I have trouble reconciling this interpretation with our other Heir. Equius certainly has some advantages, but they aren't exactly unique to him, as you'd expect them to be if his Heir class was responsible for them.

Yes, he's a highblood, but he's outranked by three non-Heirs - and his strength doesn't seem to be unique either, as Feferi seems capable of similar feats. Perhaps Equius will trip and fall into more unique privilege, but it hasn't happened yet.

Slick has had ties to Blood since he first met Karkat, so that tracks - and Boxcars is a shipper, so Nepeta's aspect is probably the best fit for now. I'm not sure about the other two, but I'll revisit them later!

Note: Although I made these bc the og eggs are birth today, I've done at least one hc for each egg! They're a bit limited bc they're based off what I've seen through 3 POVs + osmosis through liveblog, but I included them all nonetheless. :D

He thinks Leo has so much fucking swag. How does a literal egg look so fucking cool like at all times. How does she do it.

Secretly admires the shit out of Dapper. He's fucking brilliant. Hilariously unhinged. Insanely devoted to his collection habits. Adorably takes after Bad in looks and silliness. He's just such a badass little guy.

Pomme his fucking beloved. Brilliant just like her siblings, insanely perceptive, tough as nails yet still soft as flower pedals. He sees huge survivalist potential in her. He wishes she could shed some of the stress she's always seems to be under. He relates to her a bit too much sometimes. He hopes that poor girl gets a break.

He's absolutely gutted he didn't get to know Trump like at all. He saw little to nothing of him. He hopes he's at peace with Maxo.

GOD he wish he got more time with Flippa. She took him out like it was nothing. He would've loved training her alongside her parents. He bets she would've been an awesome pvper one day.

He wishes he could've seen more of Tilin. He more familiar with her than he was Trump but still not enough.

Richarlyson makes it so hard not to pick "favorite eggs" besides his own. Richas is always on some wild ass shit, Phil fucking loves it. That kid's just high on life at like all times. Unreasonably funny on top of it all. God does Phil worry about him though, he's gotten way too into risking his life for the lulz.

Ramon practically feels like a third child to him (sometimes). Much like Dapper, he loves how brilliant he is and how cracked at his craft he is.

Bobby's death absolutely devastated him. He loved that little shit. And he loved how happy he made Roier and Jaiden. Seeing how severely his death broke them made his heart ache. He had nightmares about going through the same thing.

He's DETERMINED to get to know Chunsik further. Timezones are a bitch though. :( But he will be damned if something happens before he can get more familiar.

Empanada is unreasonably cute to him, and he loves seeing her take more and more after Bagi every time he sees her once more. He absolutely loves how close she and all her moms are. He genuinely fears the Pancake Mafia tbh, and he's convinced Empanada is the head.

He adores Sunny. She knows what she wants. They're not afraid to speak their mind as long as they're comfortable. She's silly and playful and sweet. Yet they still have this small, but palpable cool edge to them. Truly one spunky little girl. 😎

Phil is like 90% sure Pepito is just always going thru it, but has a sneaking suspicion that's just how Pepito seems at first glance, and maybe thats just what Pepito WANTS people to think. Either way, Pepito is just such a Creacher and Phil loves it. An absolutely loveable little guy.

He on/off considers commissioning Ramon or Dapper to make bombs to go fuck up a Fed building. He'd let them join him tbh.

He's so insanely afraid of accidentally hurting the eggs, but he'd love to spar with them and teach them more pvp skills so they'd be even better at defending themselves. He's only comfortable doing so with his own eggs.

God, he wants more times where ALL the eggs are together. He loves watching them interact, he loves their dynamics with each other and the chaos that unfolds when they're all in one place.

Phil: I don't want to build things bc technically that's doing the Feds a favor by making the island cooler. So fuck them. // Also Phil: *would build an entire city for these goddamn eggs if it meant they were safe and happy*

Hi everyone!! Theseus cquackity viceduo zombur revivebur here.

This blog has seen several hiatuses (my bad seriously my bad), and bouts of irregular posting. So I'm sure people who regularly check it have noticed that we (Fiona @quackbur and I) haven't been posting daily anymore and haven't for a bit now. So below the cut I'm gonna talk more about that, and our plans for this blog going forward

For starters, I love roleplaying on this blog so much, as does my cohost Fiona @quackbur. Fiona has done so, so much writing for this and I feel kind of bad for taking her credit over the past two or so years, so props to her for being such a good sport and for everything she's done. This blog wouldn't exist without the shared passion she had for it.

To get sappy, I love the friends I've made in bedrockverse, they remain some of my best and closest companions. I would not trade the times I've spent with them for the world. Beau, Holly & co, Met & Co, and Thunderbottles are some of the loveliest, most supportive, and insanely talented people I have ever had the pleasure of writing with and meeting.

This includes people who aren't part of the bedrockverse that I've written with!! Shoutout to Javi anonymous-jey casino-duckling, TGM the-g-m duckofthelaw, and AD anonymous-dentist therealnoodleman. It was so much fun bringing all the quackverses together, and I respect all of you so much as writers.

AND that also includes EVERYONE who has interacted with her!!!!!!!!!! Everyone who has sent asks (thank you so much, sorry we're terrible at replying), reblogged threads, commented, posted/liveblogged, DREW FAN ART (BLOWS OUR MINDS. THERE'S BEEN SO MUCH INCREDIBLE ART CREATED, WE CANNOT THANK ALL OF YOU ENOUGH), even just liked a thread, thank you. Seriously, it has meant a lot to us to be part of this community, and have so many people enjoy this blog. Insert Pitbull image happy you enjoyed.

So, going forward it would make us really happy if you all pictured casinoroyale as happy. He has songbird-sunrise, goofygoop, and a nation full of citizens that she loves. She babysits for tubbolul and latenightmining, and terrorizes rp!emduo not infrequently. All we really wanted was to bring c!quackity to a happy place and I feel we've done that. Of course he still has shit days, as a ptsd baddie, but the good days are more common. And if we never get to it (though I hope someday we do, maybe in the form of a collaborative one-shot or fic) know that casinoroyale and songbird-sunrise DO eventually get [REDACTED]. And one of them DOES get [REDACTED]. That was always the plan! Yay! [REDACTED]!

Not to say that we don't have more arcs planned for this blog, because we do! I just don't know when/if/how they'll ever get written, especially because a lot of my friends have moved on from their rp blogs as well. But I really do still feel happy with where he's at and happy with everything I've done. This is a project I'm really, really proud of and I will always look back on fondly.

None of this means that I'm not interested in c!Quackity or DSMP as a whole anymore, either. Actually that couldn't be further from the truth. But now I'd like to be able to focus on fics, and other forms of writing, which I've been doing more recently :D actually, you can read a short one shot I posted for exile's anniversary HERE

If you've made it this far into this long, sappy post, THANKS!!!!!! The TLDR; this blog is on an indefinite hiatus, and won't be returning to its formal glory, and that's okay. We had a really good run. Now, off we go to other things

Me rambling about the fandom atmosphere during November 16th:

With November 16th hitting the corner, I thought now would be a good time to finally post this post that's been in my drafts forever

I genuinely am of the personal belief that November 16th is one of those things where you had to have been there to fully appreciate and experience it at least in my opinion. I feel like the tense atmosphere leading up to the actual event is something that is not widely talked about in the fandom. A brief reminder for the fans that are new here or that missed the stream where the November 16th War was announced: during stream C! Dream revealed that there was a traitor hiding amongst Pogtopia and said it was someone that you wouldn't expect. This one line lead to multiple fan theories going around the fandom ranging from plausible to very far fetched. The fandom turned into one big game of Among Us and EVERYONE was a suspect.

Here's an old post of my mine that I think does a good job showing the mentality of most fans going into November 16th:

There were so many theories and speculations leading up to it and you genuinely had to be there to see everyone's different theories about who the traitor would be and the couple aus I saw come out of it. It made it so that when the event did happen, no one in the fandom knew who trust and NEITHER DID THE CHARACTERS. It was amazing watching characters debate whether or not to trust eachother live. It made it feel like any discoveries or possible leads that were made were realised by the character and the fandom at the same time, especially love that one scene where C! Tubbo and C! Quackity decide they sort of trust eachother and talk about who they don't trust. I distinctly remembering switching between povs and watching the dashboard lose their shit and how current character mains would be like "OH [CHARACTER] IS ACTING SO SUSPICIOUS :0" or just liveblog whatever characters were doing and it was a really fun way of keeping up with most of the characters even if I couldn't physically watch all their povs at once

This is less about the atmosphere but more something I feel like people don't talk about enough: Phil wasn't on the Dream SMP before November 16th and we had no concrete indication he would be there. There were a lot of fan theories and headcanons about him joining and I remember seeing all the art of him joining on November 16th and at the time thinking "Oh that's really cool but I doubt they'll actually do it" SO I CAN'T DESCRIBE THE SHEER EMOTIONS I FELT WHEN HE JOINED?

I honestly still don't think I'll ever forget watching C! Wilbur press the button and watching everything go to shit at once after such a tense buildup. Whenever I tell my irl friends I once stayed up till 5am on a school night to watch a live minecraft roleplay event, most of them joke or express (VERY UNDERSTANDABLE) concern but I honestly don't regret a thing. I'd do it 30 times over just to experience that again and watch my dashboard go apeshit. November 16th will always be one of my favourite events in any media ever.

A part of me was kinda hoping for a new season 2 one with the Heroes of the Horn, but Spoilers probably meant it couldn;t be. Maybe next time. (Also the Aes Sedai one slaps anyways)

28 feels like to small a number of damane for the Seanchan to have in Falme, but I suppose it's a rough estimate and also not including those still in 'training'

The Watches Over the Waves have always been one of those loose threads that never really got touched on. Glad their getting a glancing shot here.

Mat! And Padan Fain! Surprised we aren't getting more of a reaction to Padan Fain is A Darkfriend from Mat, but that is a reveal that's pretty old to the audience at this point.

Moiraine and Lan! Platonic marriage re-established!

I like that they gave this speech to Loial re: heroes of a new age. It's very fitting for his character.

Offff. At least it's white cloaks so Egwene isn't going to have nearly as much guilt for slaughtering them.

[It was at this point that I lost all coherence and stopped being able to liveblog effectively so here are some of my assorted post credits thoughts]

MOIRAINE AND LAN KILLING IT ONCE MORE

I have conflicted feelings about Egwene actually killing Renna, related mostly to the scene from the books being so important to the under laying themes of justice and fate, but I also can't deny that with it's shifted framing, it makes complete sense for the characters, and it heightens the ongoing theme of 'The Forsaken where to Lews what the EF5 where to Rand'.

I also have conflicted feelings about Nynaeve not being the one to heal Rand's wound, but I understand the logic of the choice, even if I don't agree with it.

On the other hand it is BRILLIANT AND INCREDIBLY SMART CHOICE to have Bornhold Senior be the one to kill Hopper, and Perrin to kill him in revenge. It's going to make the Two Rivers stuff A Lot More. It will also make Perrin's conviction to give himself up to the Whitecloaks make a lot more sense.

MAT BEING A HERO OF THE HORN IS INTERESTING BECAUSE MAT SPECIFICALLY WASN'T IN THE BOOKS- HE REFUSED REPEATEDLY THROUGH MANY LIVES. This lends credence to the 'future turning of the wheel' credence of the show which I've always favored anyways.

The scene where all these pivotal character moments are happening while Mat blows the horn, all these different arcs turning on their head, is SO FUCKING BRILLIANT

ALSO CONGRATS ON THE PROMOTION TO HERO OF THE HORN UNO

They don't specifically name drop any heroes in the scene, and I'll have to go back with X Ray to see if any are named, but THEIR SURE IS A BLONDE ARCHER LADY IN THAT SHOW SO FOR NOW HIGH BIRGITTE

ALSO HIGH ARTUR HAWKWING I ASSUME on the one hand it feels weird for your line to be directed at Mat instead of Rand. On the other your part in this scene originally was really just to drive home beyond any shadow of doubt, any ability of Rand to deny it to himself for a reason beyond stubbornness, that he was the Dragon. Rand's already accepted that here so you're not strictly speaking necessary for that, but still.

The shot where everyone is standing united against Ishamael is SO FUCKING GOOD.

Also by Ishamael! We'll see you in a few seasons in your newer, hotter, twinkier body!

(I don't envy the actor that has to live up to Fares Fares, it's going to be no easy task).

Episode 1 - Widow

S2 recap trivia - Alex's therapist is Molly Doran from Slow Horses and married to Alan Blunt IRL

Maybe I'm just looking at it from a fic writer's perspective but it does seem a massive anticlimax to immediately let Tom and Kyra know Alex is okay? Like, you could have got a good couple of episodes of angst out of that uncertainty.

"Do you want me to kill them?" Oh God yes please.

Why the fuck have they plugged the USB directly into the network rather than an isolated PC? 'Hur dur we checked it first', you literally believe Scorpia are smart enough to not be bluffing about the nebulous death threat but you don't think they could hide something on the hardware? Fuck's sake lads. Amateur hour.

Is this Home Secretary meant to be Suella Braverman? Or Priti Patel maybe lol. (Equal rights and all that, and if it had been a white male character I don't think I would have thought twice about the dialogue but having both your two new female characters be immediately proved wrong/ massively patronised/ blown up ain't hugely comfortable viewing tbh).

HOW MANY FICS INVOLVING ALEX GETTING FUCKED ON THAT BED HAVE JUST BEEN BORN?

Alex never once asks about his mother does he. Given the shagger-John route they seem to have gone down you almost think Julia would be in a better shout of getting Alex to switch sides by claiming to be his mother.

And - yeah, Alex's recruitment just doesn't feel that convincing here. Adding Tom/Kyra/Jack so much to the mix has changed the feel of his life a lot, and TV verse Alex has had a lot less fucking over by the Department by this point too. And Rothman feels too creepy to be effectively convincing him of anything.

Episode 4 - Recruit

Side note: evil Celestialsapien is a cool idea, and I like that this one is taking a "hands on" approach. It's about the thrill of the hunt :) And loving making people suffer

Hm. I kinda like this angle with Ben's frustration. He feels like he's not living up to his full potential as a hero because he always has Gwen and Max helping him. It's different from when Ben would get cocky in the OG, and I think it's an interesting point, too :p This blatantly isn't about being a hero, it's about the thrill, which is something that ten-year-old Ben consistently struggled with

Still hate reboot Heatblast, but whatever

I definitely don't like how the fights are animated? It feels... slow. And I get part of that is to build up suspense/show of Alien X's abilities, since this show is aimed at a younger audience who wouldn't be familiar with the Classic continuity, but still :/ I don't like the flat camera angles and the hits don't have a lot of weight to them

Love that Alien X is killing off Ben's, though — something Eon was always too pussy to do

I hate this art style, but I appreciate that the writers are trying

I love villains who are obsessed with Ben Killing him, hunting him down, whatever. Watching villains shove aside whatever or whoever gets in their way to pursue Ben with single-minded fervor always hits good.

This fight between Ben and Alien X, up until he loses the Omnitrix, is probably my favorite fight in the special. Alien X was at his coolest and Ben really gave it his all, no matter how badly he got beat in return.

Okay, just finished it. Final thoughts? It was really cute. Is it good enough to get me to watch the rest of the reboot? No. It's definitely not as hype as some of UAF/OV's high points, probably in part because I still can't get into the art style and also because the fight scenes just aren't as good.

It had pretty good pacing! I was surprised by that, I thought 45 minutes was gonna be too short, but it ended up feeling right. (Also, I'm upset to say that Max's voice grew on me. Gwen is on thin ice.)

You can tell that this was made with a lot of love, both for the characters and for Ben 10 as a whole. It really does feel like a love letter to the fandom, and for that, it was a good watch :)

Final score: 7/10, not NEARLY as bad as I was expecting, worth a rewatch <3

Liveblog - Dofus, livre 1 : Julith [PART 5]

Forever obsessed with the way ecaflips can drink both using their tongue and just chugging liquids. Did he do this because he's nervous? Is he feeling cute? Am I insane?

One may say "Kerubim didn't tell anything was amiss to Joris because he didn't know it would be Julith", but tbh, the Ebony Dofus being stolen puts Joris in danger simply by the virtue of their connection, and Kerubim himself knows that.

He should have thought this through better. However, as we have established in the last 32498234 posts, he is stupid.

(I like to think that he went here really hoping that Bakara would say "some random rogues left with the ebony dofus LOL XD. Anyway yeah I still don't want Joris to know anything about his family or talk to me, godspeed on lying to him more, epic <3")

So real.

Something I didn't comment on is that Bakara is quite cold during this exchange: personally, she has no stake here. Unlike Kerubim, it's not like someone she loves might die or get hurt, — 10 years too late to care about that.

I think she is just quietly simmering with rage and trying not to kill half the patrons at this beautiful bar full of delicious alcohol.

I think Bakara is both worried that Kerubim told Joris nothing (meaning that the boy is in danger without knowing it (HE IS)) and that Kerubim might have told him something (which would mean that she would have to interact with him. They did have an agreement for a reason, after all...)

I think it's cool if she has conflicting priorities like that, though I know that the canonical reason behind that line is probably the first one.

Either way, this level of danger is enough for Kerubim to call off their agreement immediately.

Kerubim has 200000 different reasons to be deathly depressed about having to tell Joris about his family, but some of them are:

He beat his mother to near death and assumed she was dead for 10 years.

Joris's biological father is cooler than him, and he will lose the cool dad Olympics.

He doesn't want Joris to be saddled with this bullshit.

Joris will learn that all this time he had an aunt who wanted nothing to do with him because, to her, he is a spawn of her brother's murderer.

His mother is called "The Butcher of Brakmar"

His father is famous and illustrious and legendary.

Joris will be unhappy about being lied to for the past 10 years, including now, in a city that has a huge ass memorial to Jahash.

No matter how hard he gives, it seems like all Kerubim does is take. I think that's a pretty hard thing to realize about one's own parent.

Like for the past 10 years all he does is give, give, give, to a guy who cares sooooo much that once he almost left him without fingers by slamming a chest shut while Joris was holding it. The guy who was still treating and touching him like an infant when he was 7 years old.

That's when the darkness began, followers. He HATES Kerubim for this.

And I mean this unironically! When you're mad at someone you love, it can turn into a big case of "that bitch eating crackers syndome", where you remember every single slightly annoying thing they've ever done, — and it all suddenly seems like Proof of Irredeemable Evil on their part.

And it is kinda complicated because Joris does have a right to feel that way about Kerubim. In microcosm, most of the things he's done are pretty simple, — but it's 10 years of nothing but these small little fuck-ups with major fuck-ups in-between.

Some may say "noo" to this but, personally, I think Joris is based. He's growing a backbone.

I think it's likely that Indie was a stricter parent than Kerubim, and due to their similarities, she assumes that Kerubim will punish Joris. (Make him stand in a corner? Make him eat veggies? Make him shower? Who even knows.)

Jokes on her, Joris has likely not seen a single disciplinary action in his entire life, baybee.

For the love of god Montresor, you have got to stop tempting me to get back into Homestuck with your liveblogging of how Homestuck 2 is actually getting good now(?!?). I'm not strong enough to survive it the second time. Barely made it out the first. Please my family is dying.

I have terrible news for everyone: The HSBC team have been hinting at [S] pages for a while now, and James Roach has confirmed they're being worked on. I suspect that the reveal of The Point will be an [S] page, and if it's on the level of, say, the original [S] Enter, then it's so over becomes we're so back immediately, especially since it'll probably boost their patreon subs and thus their budget.

And as for if it's good? Maybe it's too early to say that, but I read

And I got to feel the staticky ping of a single neuron firing off my empty head like a lonely pinball

Which I'm not going to pretend is super-deep or worthy of HS2's pretensions of being Webcomickia Dell'arte™, this is all very basic and straightforward but, y'know, it's nice to feel something again when I'm reading, even if it's connecting obvious dots that the writers put very close together so that I'd find them easily. At least I get to hold the spoon feeding me myself, for once.

And there are some nice little details, like Jade referring to herself generically as the god of space instead of specifically the witch of space, emphasizing the shared element with Kanaya, or the way earlier on Kanaya made a point of not wanting to "pacify" the situation, reminding the audience of her historical romantic doormat-ness that causes her to emphasize with Jade here (Yiffy referring to Kanaya as "The Sylph" might have also been a nudge to the reader to remind us Kanaya is the Sylph of Space so we could make this connection, but that might be giving them too much credit). Really basic and obvious things, but I have a deep respect for consistently remembering to do the basic obvious stuff. Surprisingly few authors do. I certainly don't.

So, yeah, I'm on Mister Hussie's Mister Roach's Wild Ride, and I'm probably going to die on it

Rebels Rewatch: "Visions And Voices"

Maul returns to be a menace and freak both me and Ezra out.

Obligatory "I've already done a live reaction version of this episode" link.

From the very beginning, with just the washed out dingy lighting and the whooshing wind sound effect, this episode already feels unsettling. The atmospheric touches here with the storm and lightning and the camera movement and shot choice once things start happening evoke a horror movie.

The way they have Hera's voice fading out and going watery every time Maul calls to Ezra, the way Ezra keeps squinting and blinking and the tiny headshake he gives like he's trying to shake off some fatigue or jerk himself alert, make himself stop seeing things...

He looks so frightened. :(

COURSE I DON'T BLAME HIM WITH THE APPARITION OF MAUL LOOKING LIKE THIS.

Kanan and Zeb both trying to shake him awake after he faints. <3

I mentioned in my original liveblog but this episode gives me major Teen Titans 2003 "Haunted" vibes, with the plotline about a character being menaced by an imaginary villain only they can see. Rebels ultimately diverged from that parallel but my mental "If I had a nickel for every time" associations linger.

Something I loved about this episode was just how present everyone was for Ezra, how worried and concerned they were over him. Like here, all the members of the crew, even Chopper, are crowded in Kanan's room waiting for him to wake up.

Subtle animation appreciation moment: How Ezra touches the back of his neck like he's trying to rub out some stiffness or ache.

Oh hang on, did I just stumble across another Kanera-Sabezra mirror?

I DID! :D

Getting a little ahead of myself though, gotta appreciate this moment here with Ezra's fond little smile as Sabine bullies AP-5 about the munitions they're taking.

Also Sabine's "Can you believe this guy?" look lol.

Sabine immediately knows to send Chopper for Kanan. (Oh look, the two of them being the Most Important People in Ezra's life again. :D)

Sabine is very worried and alarmed this whole scene. She knows this isn't like him and oh ouch there are those Teen Titans "Haunted" feels come back to stab me again.

It's not actually clear what Maul was doing with this whole making-Ezra-see-him-everywhere trick--and you know it was deliberate, Ezra wasn't getting anything useful out of his end of the mind bond--but honestly the visions going unexplained are effectively creepy and unsettling enough. Personally I think it was one part to scare Ezra, make him doubt himself and his own mind, make him and everyone else think he was going crazy, and one part to manipulate him into doing something horrible he'd regret so that the Rebels would cast him out and drive him to Maul.

Hera understandably takes Ezra off the mission in light of events and heads it up herself. There's very soft worried mom energy radiating off her in this scene.

I'm kind of amazed Kanan and Sabine putting a tracker on Ezra without telling him didn't get any rancid takes complaining about how ~cLeArLy tOxIc~ it was. Maybe people actually remembered the part of Ezra's characterization where he tends to impulsively go off half-cocked to save people and figured, "Oh, Kanan's taking some obvious precautions in case he does that." Or maybe they decided given two previous kidnapping attempts Kanan was allowed a little paranoia over his kid.

Aaaaaaand this is the first we've heard Ezra's theme in a while.

(Note: Sabine has already painted one of Ezra's new Scout Trooper helmets, which he decides to wear to see Bendu. Even though the last time they rode the speeder into the Bendu's hollow he didn't bother wearing a helmet at all. Upgraded your comfort item/security blanket metaphor there, Ezra, eh?)

Full on horror strings here as we pan up to Maul just chilling like a creeper at the top of the hollow.

The way Ezra almost steps between Maul and Kanan. <3

Something I loved this episode was Ezra consistently rejecting Maul's attempts to touch him, smacking or shoving his hand off his shoulder, deliberately stepping away and keeping a distance.

Since a straightforward request was denied, Maul resorts to blackmail, threatening to broadcast the location of the base to the Empire and oof, Ezra's face.

Maul then dangles the "key to defeating the Sith" carrot in front of them, which activates Ezra's Hero Complex and hyper-responsibility and is what makes him agree to go. See, Maul is his responsibility, it's his fault Maul is even after them in the first place, so Ezra feels a sense of obligation to take care of him as a personal problem.

Love how Kanan says Phoenix Squadron will just wholecloth pack up and move to a new base in order to keep Ezra safe. I don't think it works like that Kanan, lol, but the spirit is appreciated.

Ezra's awfully confident that Maul won't hurt him and, ngl, that is not a risk I would have taken. But Kanan decides to trust Ezra and so the snippet of Ezra's theme that's been playing (marking his gesture of self-sacrifice) gives way to the same cue that played when Vader was descending on top of the TIE Advanced in "Twilight of the Apprentice", kind of an auditory callback to Malachor and the start of this whole arc.

Sabine's already getting the Phantom II prepped. <3

Dathomir looks appropriately hellish. Twisted gnarled trees, barren rocks, broken architecture, drenched in deep red with fog obscuring the horizon.

It's subtle at first and grows more obvious as the episode carries on but Maul is a little bit, ah... bipolar in his actions and displays of emotion here. He oscillates between speaking calmly, growling in frustration, outright snapping at Ezra sometimes, cackling to himself randomly, and of course dropping his voice down into that soft, vulnerable cadence that's his go-to whenever he wants to garner and play to Ezra's sympathies. Ezra takes his erratic behavior in stride, for the most part, doesn't flinch or comment on Maul's mood swings.

Really do love the environment work Rebels does. <3

"Fun" easter egg to note: The scrawled Mand'oa on the wall spells KENOBI.

Aaaaaaand our introduction of the plot device that is the darksaber, displayed prominently under a cubist painting of Satine, whose theme plays as Ezra examines the darksaber. This reference is pure fanservice for TCW fans. It basically means nothing to me emotionally, I was never a fan of Satine or her romance with Obi-Wan, so mostly I just feel offended and creeped out on her behalf that a painting of her got hauled to Maul's murder cave and defaced.

(Interesting to note that the slashes of... paint?... blood?... stuff crosses out Satine's eyes and cuts her throat. Is Maul reveling in his murder of her, trying to relive it by destroying her image? Did he stub out her eyes to stop her from "staring" at him? Who knows.)

Okay I lied, Ezra flinches precisely once, right after Maul yells at him not to touch the darksaber.

I like to think it was possibly calling out to him, the kyber crystal inside a natural siren song to Force wielders, and that's how Ezra knows it's some kind of lightsaber and not just a weird stick.

Love the drums in this music cue. It's got some exotic-sounding eastern instruments in it too, I think I might hear a bit of didgeridoo?

Subtle animation appreciation moment: How Ezra screws up his face in preparation to down the potion, it obviously doesn't smell or taste very good lol.

The music turns frantic and rushing when we cut the Sabine and Kanan landing out, like it's telling them to hurry. More exotic instruments, some kind of tinny percussion, cymbals maybe?

Right, so this episode was clearly another Halloween special right? Has all the perfect trappings of one lol.

Maul strays into Dangerously Genre Savvy here; he never intended to pay for using the Nightsisters' magick himself and his dialogue to Ezra seems to indicate he didn't intend to sacrifice Ezra to them either. So his plan was either to evade the spirit witches long enough to get away scott free, or he was counting on other members of the Spectres to come after Ezra trying to save him.

Either way, it leads to one of the creepiest scenes in the show.

Subtle animation appreciation moment: The bewildered way Kanan's head jerks around right before the Nightsister spirit possesses him, like he can tell that something freaky is there but he can't tell what or where.

The unnatural character movement the animators use for Possessed!Kanan and Possessed!Sabine is really good; they're limp like puppets for a bit before the spirits take full control, and even afterwards move in jerky, inhuman motions.

And thus a half-dozens angst!fics were written lol. (And still not nearly enough.)

Ngl, Maul technically does show Ezra how to save his friends buuuuut he gets no points for that since he clearly thought Ezra would just write them off and come with him.

I'm still amazed he didn't just kidnap him right there. Kenobi obsession too strong I guess.

Other people have already pointed out the irony of Maul screaming at Ezra to forget the past and his attachments while himself being obsessed with the past and clearly trying to use Ezra as a Replacement Goldfish for Savage but I'll mention that anyway.

You know, the Fridge Horror of this episode is really unsettling. I know at least one fanficcer and @better-call-mau1 have asked the question of how, exactly, does possessing Kanan and Sabine allow the Nightsisters to rebuild their clan? They're either going to use Kanan and Sabine to perform some kind of freaky necromancy ritual, use them to lure other Rebels in (seems like it'd have limited effectiveness, eventually Rebel Command would decide retrieval isn't worth it), or they would rebuild the clan using more... ah... conventional means.

Add that unsettling thought to how possessed Sabine seems to stalk Ezra, specifically, while the possessed Kanan returns to the altar and fkhkhffjhjhgggfgjjjj--

Yeah.

"That doesn't belong to you!" "Then take it from me, Jedi!" Are they talking about the darksaber or Sabine's body?

...Yes.

This music cue is amazing. Possessed Sabine scrabbling on the ground like a feral animal while Ezra just calmly Force Pushes her out of the threshold is excellently staged.

Well that's a heart eyes expression if I ever saw one lol.

Sometimes I like to listen to different language tracks for specific dramatic parts of shows or movies, to see how other actors do it, compare performance notes and kjsahfkajshfkajh one of the Chinese Nightsister-possessed Kanans was one of the most horrifying scary things I've ever heard.

This scene is just heartwrenching. A lot of this episode was spoiled in the trailers so this maybe didn't have as much dramatic impact as it should have had at the time but I still found it pretty gut-punching. A little short, maybe. That's about it.

This is one of Ezra's finer moments, frankly, outsmarting and defeating the Nightsister spirits. You really feel the care he has for Kanan. Love it. <3

From the moment Ezra said that the answer to destroying the Sith was "Obi-Wan Kenobi" I think I knew it was a false flag and what Maul had manipulated him to see. Because, obviously, they key is Luke.

Interesting how Ezra thinks if Obi-Wan doesn't, eventually, fight, that the Sith can't be stopped. He's pinning a lot of hopes on a man who doesn't, ultimately, wind up being the narrative Chosen One who accomplishes that task. Again, more on that later in "Twin Suns".

Ezra seems to pay Sabine a glance as he passes, aww.

*PORTENTS OF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT*

This episode is one of my favorites, and the "Haunted" mental connections are only one of the reasons why. It's got great dialogue, creepy suspense, adorable subtle Sabezra moments, furthering of Maul's slow mental degradation and descent into full ruin, and Ezra gets to be amazingly self-sacrificing, brave, and awesome in it. What's not to love?

I love this event so much! Please watch if if you haven't already:

It's well written imo. It gives the characters a lot of really good moments without needing to be too overt about it. Like, Tsuruno points out that Oriko's manipulations are bait, Sana gets to protect people, we get a deep exploration of Mitama's character, and Oriko gets to be partially redeemed.

I like that they don't pull their punches with how evil Oriko can be. This event shows how selfish, how cruel, how self-centered, and how manipulative she is. I think it has to, in order for her to really hit rock bottom-- we have to see and be shown over and over that underneath it all, there is no salvation. Just a desire to save the self. To become useful and wanted.

Like I said, I can't blame people when they dislike Oriko, because in a lot of ways she is deeply unlikable. She's manipulative, she tries to kill popular characters, she's a hypocrite, and she uses the people who love her against their best interests. But I think all of these things make her a really fascinating character, and she's a lot of fun to watch. I think it also helps to know that in the right circumstances, she becomes very heroic. In an alternate timeline of the manga, Oriko is fighting Walpurgisnacht instead and is a straight-up good person. She's still struggling with her place in the world and her feelings of insecurity, but she saves Yuma and doesn't directly kill anyone (well she kind of does out of self defense, but it wasn't exactly her choice).

I think that's what makes me like Oriko so much-- that she desperately wants to be good and wanted. She wants to make the argument that she deserves to exist in the world too! And I can relate to that a little bit. Not necessarily murdering people??? But thinking that you need to accomplish great things in order to justify your existence.

Making her so overtly evil in some ways is like displaying a mirror in front of the face, saying "this is what you could be if you don't fix your path. This is what you could be in the worst case scenario."

I think it also helps that we see how Oriko's actions are hurting her and the people she loves. Yes yes she's rewarded at the end of the story, but only because she hit rock bottom and has to make up for what she's done. Not only that, but she can no longer move forward under the delusion that she did anything for a pure reason to save the planet-- she knows the depths of her soul now.

Stories imo don't need to say "this character is bad and if you are like them, you will be bad," but I do prefer it when we see realistic reactions to character's actions. ...Obviously the forgiveness at the end is pretty funny, but the stuff around it-- Oriko's suffering, what she's done to Kirika, the way she hurt everyone around her... Even the fact that Iroha admits that

(accept an apology is what Iroha is meaning)

is enough for me. I also don't need villains to really be punished for their actions either-- I just don't like it when stories present people who are doing awful things but the narrative presents it like it's actually justified or okay.

Overall I really enjoyed this event and I hope you guys enjoyed the liveblog :)

@broooer submitted: Hi Sally! Hi Cat! Love the liveblog! Sorry for submission, I wanted to send an ask but that's not long enough for what I wrote up. I've been waiting for a bit because I wanted to give you a perspective I take on Sburb/Sgrub/The Game/Skaia now that you have learned about the Ultimate Reward. It's very much a biologist's perspective (spoilers I'm an ecologist working on getting a PhD in environmental stuff) so it's an interesting complement to your coding perspective, from which I learned a lot!

It's *evolved*: it's a system that that "exists to propagate" *itself* because the versions of it that are better at doing so are the ones that go on to create and seed new universes with new planets and new life and propagating in general. It doesn't need conscious control or manipulation to go on do so - it has a framework that worked in the past, and it builds on that framework with each iteration, regardless of whether it's the most practical way to go about it. It won't be the most practical, most literal way forward, just the way that evolved first and proved "good enough", not selected for consciously, just working out mechanically. This doesn't explain how Sburb/The Game/Skaia first came about to *be* in the first place, but once the first "seed" or two of it was established, the versions of it that survived are those that were good at doing that. It would explain how it exploits timelines a bit - the main timeline is the one that propagates the game forward, so that the alternate timelines are those that don't survive because they won't produce a viable seed for a new universe. They're "offspringless", they don't have a future, they inevitably die off. Stable loops evolved as another way of ensuring propagation. Timelines like Davesprite's work because they help the Alpha timeline propagate forward, and even then the timeline itself dies off after it's benefit to the Alpha ends. There might be many potential Alphas, but the one that arises first - that is "good enough" to do it's job (A) will be taken on, even if it means it later has to evolve loops and roundabouts and what not to make it effective in another situation. If it had evolved instead in way B, it might be more straightforward than A, might be more efficient/need less timeloops/etc., but since A happened by luck, it's the good enough timeline to be the main timeline. (This doesn't mean there won't be other "alpha" timelines in existence, but that they probably don't interact with other alphas, since they're separated by different situations… and this goes heavy into evolutionary biology so let me explain a bit more). There is something called evolutionary fitness landscape, where you visualize how one trait is more evolutionary beneficial than another.

So you see those peaks? Those are the most beneficial points in the landscape - and sometimes these peaks are separated by dips and troughs which are actually negative to the fitness, or the evolutionary survival of the organism. So organisms that "land" near one peak (have the trait of that peak that gives it a benefit in its evolutionary fitness) will not be able to transition to another peak even if that other peak is even better than the peak they are on, because there is a deep dip between them where they'd lose evolutionary benefits. They're *locked* into these peaks. They can't reach those other peaks. In other words, if Alpha timeline A is peak 1, it's supplementary alternate timelines can't interact with Alpha timeline B, which is peak 2. Of course, this doesn't mean that any peak is the best one or even good for the kids because the kids and trolls are more like… cells. Some cells die but in the process ensure the survival of the organism (the timeline in this case). The organism is still dependent on the cells. Of course, this doesn't mean there aren't, say, parasitic elements to the timelines, or even outright predators, or just beings who are good at exploiting these timelines/Sburb/Sgrub/The Game/Skaia for their own ends. After all, we already heard about a demon that appears when a universe dies and that it works to establish the parameters of it's appearance from the beginning of the universe's timeline since it appears ("The demon is already here"). It might be part of Skaia. It might just be a cancerous cell. It might be an outsider taking advantage of this "organism". There's so many options! Anyways, hope this is interesting and that I did not add any spoilers for what you haven't read yet. If I did, Cat, tell me and I'll rewrite it! Cheers! Rairii

*PS: I'm not an evolutionary biologist so there is more to evolution than just this! It's a complicated subject and I loved my evolution class and teaching it as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, but it is NOT my specialty.

This submission suggests that Sburb's behavior - and in particular, the way it exploits timelines - is the result of evolution, which is a fascinating idea.

Like, the implication here is that Sburb is a lifeform, a species of living creature, and subject to biological imperatives. I've kind of touched on the idea before, but didn't dig into it too deeply at the time, since biology isn't my wheelhouse. I think it's time to get the shovel, though.

I'm picturing Paradox Space as a soil, constantly being subsumed and transformed by a menagerie of metatemporal lifeforms. No wonder Homestuck's timelines are so twisted, if they're the medium through which sessions spread, grow, and propagate themselves. Soil is complicated, even when it's made out of time.

I also love the analogy of Paradox Space as a fitness landscape. I've used them before when working with genetic algorithms, and likening Alpha Timelines to local maxima is inspired. I really like the idea that there are other viable timelines out there, separated from the kids by an ocean of offshoots like Davesprite's. This explains Homestuck's arbitrary time loops - they are arbitrary. The narrative is focusing on an arbitrary Alpha Timeline.

This is also an interesting perspective on the kids' session. If their Alpha Timeline has grown, through natural selection, into a timeline where Sburb survives and thrives, why has their session failed so spectacularly?

...well, there's more to survival than reproduction.

Perhaps the kids are being maneuvered into a position where they can protect Sburb, ensuring it survives to create more universes down the line.

last time we checked in, Non was having just the Worst Time Possible, everyone was trying to cover their asses and Phi was entering into Murder/Detective Mode.

i know i've said it before but god the opening credits are SO GOOD. i don't think we appreciate them enough.
