*cries pathetically* PLEASE MASTER. TEACH ME YOUR WAYS. HOW DO I WRITE ANGST?! I know that worbs will never do my imagination justice but... PLEASE!!!! TEACH ME HOW TO RIP MY READERS HEARTS OUT AND COLLECT THEIR TEARS AS FUEL FOR MORE WRITING. PLEASE!!!!!! *falls to floor and sobs some more*
MUAHAHAHAHAH I am very flattered that you think I write angst well!! I am actually an angst/whump writer first and foremost, so it's the fluffy and romantic stories that give me a harder time.
I'm gonna be honest and say that I've rewritten this message four or five times now trying to find the right words. And that made me realize that sometimes there are no right words. I have a very vivid imagination, so I can definitely relate when you say that words won't always do it justice, but if you can write it in a way that makes you feel all the same things that you did when you first imagined it... I think that's when you know you've succeeded.
I cannot tell you how many times I've made myself cry while writing a fic. And that isn't meant to be a humble brag like: "Oh look at me, look at how good I write this angst." But it's more so saying that I put so much of myself and my own emotions into writing this scene and this character that it feels real to me. And hopefully that means it feels real to the readers too.
Relatability can be very important to stories, but sometimes it's not about making the audience relate to a character's purpose and methods, it's making them relate to their experience and emotions.
I'll give you just one example of this: In Off With [the Demon's] Head, Ra's is a terrible person. But when you put yourself in his shoes, you can see why he turned out that way. It may not be healthy, but a healthy mindset was never the point, it was a human one- with all its flaws and logical fallacies.
As much as I hate to use this meme, it is unfortunately very accurate:
Tumblr media
I never know for certain that readers will get emotional over a fic. For the truly angsty fics, that is the whole point, but there's still no certainty it'll happen. Because everyone has different experiences and sometimes that means they relate to a fic or character differently than I do. I've had it happen before where I wrote a scene to be bittersweet and that made people more emotionally damaged than the actually angsty scene.
You never know with these things, so I think just trying to let the scene run its course and do all the things its meant to is the way to do it. At times that means your audience will feel that angst as acutely as you do, and sometimes that means they won't. And it's not necessarily that you missed the mark, it's that they weren't the target audience.
So all this is to say, write it the way you think is best for your fic. You might be surprised with what you come up with. <3

Info: So I was watching the movie and I was just like, 'Gee, Kirk's sure getting knocked around a lot, I wonder how he's still standing?' BECAUSE I MEAN JUST- Let's list what I remember.
1) Was whammied by McCoy and his medical voodoo. 2) Was further whammied by really goddamn severe allergic reactions to said voodoo (even if it was hilarious at the time.) 3) SKYDIVING FUN TIEMZ and fighting on the Giant Drill of Death. 4) Vulcan nerve pinch, osnaps. 5) Was deserted on a fucking freezing planet, chased by a bigass Cloverfield monster, rolled down a huge snowbank and ran for his life across cracking ice. 6) Unexpected mind rape meld. 7) Had the crap beaten out of him and was choked half to death by Spock. 8) Had the crap beaten out of him by Romulans who (they're related to Vulcans, right?) are probably x100 times as strong as humans. Strangled again. 9) From what I can guess, little to no sleep for anywhere from 24 to 72 hours. 10) HE WAS RUNNING A WHOLE LOT, I mean the man must have been goddamn exhausted. 11) Mental stress from A) the destruction of a whole fucking planet, B) the loss of almost the entirety Starfleet Academy cadets (probably including the green chick he'd been 'friendly' with), C) memories he might have picked up from Spock Prime about the life he never lived and might never have, plus the severe the emotional backlash from the meld and D) ALL OF THAT GODDAMN STRESS. Srsly.
So what I would like is a post-movie fic where Kirk, after the adrenaline wears off (this can be immediately after they escape the pull of the anomaly or hours or even a day later, I don't care) completely crashing. Like, having a conversation one minute and falling flat on your face the next type crashing. Because really, the human body isn't made to withstand a beating like that without requiring some recuperation time.
McCoy/Kirk, Spock/Kirk, Spock/Kick/McCoy or Spock/Kirk/Uhura is preferred. Hurt/comfort is a must. Bonus points if there's concerned!Uhura finally demonstrating even the slightest sliver of respect for Kirk after everything he did. Even more bonus points for concerned!McCoy snark. :D
I don't know it's appropriate for a kink meme, but I'd really rather the focus be on the hurt/comfort and characters than the on sex, if there's any sex at all. I leave that up to the author.
...hopefully that wasn't too specific. BUT I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER SRSLY. I don't know why Kirk whump is so addictive. He just bruises so pretty, IDEK. (thread)

⋆ NAME?: Dove / Ev
⋆ PRONOUNS?: he/him but I'm not outed irl.
⋆ MOST ACTIVE MUSE(S)?: Curumë but tbh also Raistlin but I am too nervous about getting him wrong and thus shy away from writing more for him
⋆ RP PET PEEVES?: Roleplay Answers that don't have any hooks in them and thus don't drive the story forward. Give me something active to work with, there are only so many times I can come up with everything on my own. Don't just make your character react, make them act! (Or add Environmental and Atmospheric cues that my Character can react to)
⋆ EXPERIENCE / HOW MANY YEARS?: I lost count. I've been rping since I was 11 and I am now over 30.
⋆ FLUFF, ANGST, OR SMUT?: I am an Angst whore! But I want Fluff in between to make the Angst hit harder and to actually build character relationships. Depends on the muse, however. I also love Whump. I don't care much about smut, and I suck at writing it. But if it fits into the story I will write it.
⋆ PLOTS OR MEMES?: Both! Sometimes Memes can be really good Ice breakers. And plot can come second to see where it should go! Or sometimes you want / need to plot first because else interaction might be difficult. I guess the mix does it.
⋆ LONG OR SHORT REPLIES?: Length is not as important as content. You can give me 3 pages of just describing one single object and it will do less than 2 paragraphs of describing what your character does, says, feels, and what the mood of the room is, and then I can actually work with it! My own replies vary as well. I suffer from always feeling like I need to match my partner or feeling that I write too little, though, for myself.
⋆ TIME TO WRITE?: The night, after midnight. Sadly I can't always do it because of work.
⋆ ARE YOU LIKE YOUR MUSE(S)?: So in all honesty, yes and no. For both of them. Curumë specifically actually incorporates a lot of my personality traits and traumas. He (originally) was based on my Tav in BG3. BG3 was my coping game while dealing with the aftermath of an extremely toxic relationship and breakup. BG3 turned out to be about the abuse cycle in its essence and thus made me obsessed. And I put a lot of needs and wants and wishes of what I should have done into Curumë. The theme of Freedom and the fight against being controlled is a huge part that both haunt/ed me (and him). It also made me vibe hardcore with Astarion, but I shy away from writing him because it feels like a competition. And also Curumë is more personal, more catered to what I personally experienced.
I write him like an Asshole because that is the part that is the opposite of me. But it is - sometimes - what I wish I had done, instead of people pleasing and being a "I can Fix him" person. Anyway, this got a bit personal I am sorry.
As for Raistlin sadly he is also a lot like me. But also not. I actually want to rp and write for him because he is so relatable. I started out reading the books dealing with his character development specifically and it was scary how someone could put some of my own experiences as a (constantly rejected) disabled person with a nondisabled sibling into one character so well. I'd say Raistlin is someone I could have become if I hadn't gone to therapy and decided to deal with my inner demons. The biggest difference between him and me though is the hunger for power, because I don't have that. I do have a need for adoration though, ngl.

As you can see, I suck at keeping my place tidy. Also, yes, the wig is there because I am working on a Raistlin Cosplay irl.

Hey Ash
I've been thinking about this and it's quite scary but the meme you shared
Made me wanna share my thoughts and maybe hear yours as well
Is whump writing, reading or roleplaying-which was jaw dropping for me cuz thought i was the only one doing it before they sleep, daydreaming about it or creating the whumpee version of themselves as they go-i hope this doesn't seem repulsive- an act of dissociation? And if so,why would many wanna dissociate? It makes me feel so fragile but hearing that yeah you hate reality so much you're escaping to a nonexistent world!
But even there you enjoy the suffering
Is there something psychological behind it?i really wanna know
Am i sick for liking what i like?
I'd like to hear your thoughts and anyone else's
Sorry for the trouble
As with many things, it's "can be but isn't necessarily." Storytelling is inherently human. We are creatures whose ability to tell stories to each other, passing on knowledge and wisdom, ideas and musings, is what made the difference in our species survival.
We are a people who saw cave walls and knew they needed painting of bison that would look like they were moving with firelight flickered just the right way.
Telling a story where someone is hurt is no more maladaptive than any other kind of story. The root of it tends to be wanting to spool out in your mind a series of very strong emotions, because those resonate strongly internally, keeping your interest longer.
Are there people who use whump as a kind of dissociation? Probably. I'm sure there are. I have daydreamed to escape anxiety before. Plenty of people have found themselves upset or broken hearted and discovered their writing coming much faster than it usually does. Writing and dreaming helps our brains process things, even those not directly related to what we write about.
If anyone suggests daydreaming means you "hate" reality, well, people watch sitcoms or dramas or binge Netflix. It's all the same root - we tell stories, to ourselves and others.

Fanfic writer ask meme 2, 7, and/or 9! :)
Thanks for asking, these were really fun to think about! 2. What fanfic do you wish you got more response on?
Definitely writing a book on how to stay conscious (when you drown)! It's been doing significantly worse numbers-wise than my other stranger things multichaps -- I think due mostly to the premise being very intense angst? Basically the idea is that Eddie was made immortal/Kas-ified prior to his death, but after he betrayed Vecna, Vecna punished him by sticking him in a coffin at the bottom of Lover's Lake, where Steve finds him two years later.
I'm pretty proud of the writing style on this one (and have a plot point/twist that I'm itching to share mid-fic), so if hurt/comfort and trauma recovery is your jam, I'd recommend checking it out!
7. What’s a troupe you love to write?
This one is hard! Hurt/comfort, whump, and angst with a happy ending, but I think those are more fic genres than tropes? I really like writing about identity crises, particularly ones related to lack of/loss of humanity -- that's a weirdly common theme across my writing. I also write about death a lot, lmao
A very specific trope that I use a lot is the traumatic haircut. Idk if that says anything about me, or if I just tend to write about characters that have a lot of Drama tied up with their hair (looking at you, Steve Harrington and Geralt of Rivia).
9. What’s your favorite line(s) or scene(s) that you have written?
I was super proud of the Erica chapter in count to thirty! I feel like I nailed her voice and was really happy with how the structure of that chapter came together.

Rules surrounding requests for userboxes:
All requests must begin with 'this user _' or something similar to that.
Your request must be somehow related to one of the Red Dead Redemption games.
Please don't send in discriminatory requests.
I will not do userboxes that are hateful towards certain characters, ships, etc. unless that character is Micah 🤷🏽‍♀️ Any that I do happen to post are all in fun.

Please give credit if you decide to use a userbox of mine 💞
Rules surrounding requests for fanfiction and/or headcanons:
Your request must be related to one of the Red Dead Redemption games.
I will not do Reader fanfics/headcanons. Any pairings I do, platonic or romantic, all involve people who already exist within the game.
I will not do romantic pairings involving Micah.
I fucking love writing platonic stuff, so if you've got stuff you'd like to request that aren't romantic and/or sexual, please don't be afraid to ask.
I am a raging aegosexual who has no idea how sex works, but I can give NSFW requests my best shot as long as it isn't incestuous or abusive.
(Would like to clarify now that whilst I don’t ship things like Vandermorgan and Morston, they are not incestuous. If you feel differently, this may not be the place for you.)
Ships/pairings I am comfortable writing about:
Charles x Arthur (Charthur)
Dutch x Hosea (Vandermatthews)
Bessie x Hosea
Hosea x Arthur (Platonic)
Bessie x Arthur (platonic)
(Here is a list of all my current AO3 works)
That isn't to say I won't write about other pairings, these are just some of my favourites and/or the stuff I'm most familiar with.
I will also mention that choosing not to write about a certain ship or something doesn't mean I'm against it. I fully support any ship that isn't harmful, even the more uncommon ones - there's just a few that I personally don't love.
For people who don't know, I adore whump. Here are some of my favourite tropes for people who'd like to send in whump requests:
Conditioning
Dehumanization
Filmed
Forced to watch
Forced to hurt
Gagged/Muzzled
Hidden injury
Hypothermia
Intimate Whumper
Manhandling
Non-con
Pet whump
Recovery/emotional whump/PTSD.
Restrained
Self-sacrifice
Slavery
Things I will not do:
Amputation
Extreme gore
Eye whump
Pregnancy
Romanticised abuse
Disclaimer: I do not condone anything that goes on in my stories. I am not romanticising anything that goes on in my stories. Please do not assume such. If you have any questions concerning the topic of whump in general, feel free to visit my ask box and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Love and Redemption Review
Tumblr media
Overall, I have to say that the story was really good, maybe even better than the popular xianxia romances that came before it like Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, Love and Destiny, and Ashes of Love. The romance may be comparable to AOL, but as a whole, the plot in L&R was more interesting and cohesive.
****SPOILERS AHEAD FOR LOVE AND REDEMPTION AND OTHER XIANXIA DRAMAS****
Plot
What sets Love and Redemption apart from the other 3 xianxia romances is that Love and Redemption also feels like a quest/adventure story, while also delivering a gut-wrenching, star-crossed romance plot. What’s interesting about L&R is that the main focus is on the mortal realm and the FL and ML’s current mortal incarnation, as opposed to the heavenly realm and their immortal identities.
The actions of the mortals have consequences across the 3 realms, as opposed to other xianxia romances that only use the mortal realm as a temporary stage for the leads to fall in love. The other 3 xianxias that I mentioned all opened up in the heavenly/celestial realm first, while the mortal realm was just a brief trial that the leads have to endure before returning to the immortal realm. The moral realm in L&R therefore feels livelier and more eventful, and the mortals have more agency and are not easily influenced by celestial beings. Whenever a celestial being does come down to the mortal realm, their powers are limited and are they are bound by the rules and restrictions of the mortal realm (which means that celestial beings can’t use their powers to mess with the emotions and decisions of mortals).
The drama opens up with a tournament being held at the FL’s sect and members from all the other sects are arriving for the tournament. When the FL and ML meet, they are on equal footing (well, equal in terms of status as disciples, but not so much in terms of magical prowess). It’s like when you were in high school and you meet the visiting basketball team from a rival school, and then end up becoming friends with them.
Love and Redemption also takes the audience through a mystery. What is the true immortal identity of the FL? What’s her relationship to the Star of Mosha? Is she the saviour or the doomsday harbinger? Does the ML have an immortal identity too? Why do they have the same birthday? The drama keeps us on our toes because we learn about the truth and the history of the characters as they’re discovering it, as opposed to the other xianxia dramas where there is very little mystery and few plot twists.
Because of this mystery, the drama is tight and well-paced, since a new piece of the puzzle is always being revealed. Just when you thought that the mystery is solved, there’s a twist, and you realized that the twist was set up from the very beginning of the story, but you just missed it.
The story also doesn’t stray from the main leads. Yes, there are subplots (as all dramas do), but the subplots here are brief, and they usually relate back to the main leads. Unlike in AOL where the later half of the drama derails and focuses on the two other supporting couples, while the main leads only get about 10 minutes of screen time.
The Male Lead - Yu Si Feng
Tumblr media
Before starting the drama, I read a lot of comments about how much whump and emotional torture the ML goes through and how much he sacrifices for the FL. I thought this was an exaggeration. I mean, Xufeng in AOL went through a lot of Jin Mi too, (and you could make the same argument for Ye Hua in TMOPB, or Bai Zi Hua in Journey of Flower), so I was a little hesitant about the premise since it’s such an old trope, and I was doubtful that it could top the sacrifice that other MLs have done in other dramas.
But reader, boy was I wrong. Yu Si feng is the definition of limitless, unconditional love. I lost count of how many times he almost died for the FL (not including the 9 times she killed him in their previous 9 lives). He’s spitting up blood and stabbed in nearly every episode. Episodes 37-47 were the hardest to watch because of the escalating chronic angst and misunderstandings between him and Xuan ji that caused irreversible damage to their relationship. Even when she tries to kill him and tells him she regrets having ever known him, he still drags himself back to rescue her. To quote Si feng himself, it’s not a question of whether or not it’s worth it, but it’s a question of whether you are willing to do it. And Si feng is as eager and willing as ever to sacrifice everything for Xuan ji.
I mean, even Xufeng in AOL and Ye Hua in TMOPB snapped at the FL’s cruelty and aloofness at one point, but Si feng seems incapable of ever being angry with Xuan ji. Even when Si feng purposely tries to avoid her, it’s out of protection for her, not out of anger for everything she’s done. Like??? Si feng is impossibly perfect, even by the impossible standards of xianxia.
Cheng Yi plays Si feng to a T. He conveys a different type of pain in every crying scene, and so Si feng basically experiences like 59 different types of crushing pain, and you feel it in your bones every time you watch it. The man’s eyes speak volumes.
While it would be easy to say that Cheng Yi carries the drama with his portrayal of Si Feng, the actions of the ML would be meaningless if there were no romantic interest that he was doing this all for.
The Female Lead - Chu Xuan Ji
Tumblr media
Some people may feel that Xuan ji isn’t worth Si feng’s devotion. But, I would argue that the first 37 episodes shows us that she is definitely worth it.
Xuan Ji is similar to Jin Mi from AOL in that she is incapable of feeling or understanding love. Because Xuan Ji was born without her 6 senses (and also without a real heart, unbeknownst to the other characters), she’s naive and juvenile. But despite not having feelings, she’s still able to care completely about others. She cares about her sister, her father, her sect brothers, and Si Feng. She’s fiercely protective of them as they are of her. To the best of her limited abilities, she is devoted to people as much as she can be.
Because of her sensory deprivation, Xuan Ji is really curious about the world. She wants to be like everyone else, to feel like everyone else, in hopes of being able to properly reciprocate people’s love for her. She envies people who are able to cry because she thinks that’s an unhindered way of showing love. She regrets not being able to cry when her mother died. Xuan Ji is therefore a self-aware character, unlike Jin Mi, because she knows her shortcomings. She wants to be able to feel, understand, and share pain.
As such, she’s quite an active character because she has this goal of reviving her senses, which has ripple effects for the other characters in the story since they become a part of her journey, whether by choice or by force.
Why Si Feng fell for Xuan Ji
Tumblr media
Xuan Ji and Si Feng are very opposite characters, and not just because of the obvious difference in their personalities. Si Feng is a boy who feels too much (we later see that he gets his persistent sentimentality from his father), but was taught his whole life to suppress his emotions (I mean, the mask both literally and figuratively prevents him from emoting). Si Feng wants to express his feelings, but cannot.
On the other hand, Xuan Ji is allowed to be as expressive as she wants, but she is empty on the inside. Xuan Ji represents everything Si Feng wants to be and is expected to be: free and emotionless.
In this mortal incarnation, SF has responsibilities to everyone, from his spirit beast to his sect. Xuan Ji is the only one who doesn't ask or expect anything of him and yet, for someone who can't feel, she's always thinking of him. she stands up for him, she brings him snacks to comfort him when he’s being punished, she helps steal back his mother's hairpin. These are very simple gestures, but they mean the world to him (no one else has done these things for him before, and he doesn’t understand why she would unconditionally do these things for him), and that's why he's so quick to risk everything for her. Thus ironically, Si Feng actually learned about unconditional love from Xuan Ji.
He’s never known love, warmth, or friendship in his lonely years growing up in the Lize Palace. And so, when you’re just a 16 year old awkward, hormonal, and introverted teenage boy, it’s easy to fall for a selfless girl who invades your personal space and has no sense of propriety.
Why Xuan Ji fell for Si Feng
Tumblr media
We see that her love is gradual. She falls in love with him without even realizing she’s fallen in love. She cares for him as a friend at first. After all, like she said, Si Feng is the first friend she’s made from outside her sect. But soon, her caring for him surpasses that of what she feels for her sect brothers. Si Feng teaches her about the world, from what different food tastes like, to naming colours. Si Feng doesn’t infantilize her like her sect brothers do. Her sect brothers are either dismissive or protective, like Ming yan, but she is able to find a proper confidant in Si Feng who is willing to be patient with her and listen to her.
Their 4-year separation when they each undergo training and achieve a boost in their abilities, only made Xuan Ji’s heart grow fonder. She misses Si Feng, and is frustrated to see that things are different between them when they meet again. She doesn’t understand why he’s so cold and distant, and all she wants to do is close the distance between them.
It’s a meme that Xuan Ji is the one who wears the pants in the relationship. She’s assertive and bold, and I think part of the reason why she fell for Si Feng is because he gives her that space to be best and biggest version of herself, whether in the heavenly realm or in the mortal realm. She’s also fascinated by him. A person outside of her sect who has an endearing personality unlike anyone else she’s seen. He piques her curiosity, and so she’s drawn to him. He’s as much as her romantic and sexual awakening as she is his.
It’s apt that their ship name is the combination of their last names “Chu Yu”, which sounds similar to the words 初遇, which means “first encounter”. Not only is this drama about capturing the feelings of first love, but Si Feng and Xuan Ji have also had 10 different first encounters because of their 10 reincarnation tribulations.
The Romance
It’s actually quite fun and endearing to watch because both Xuan Ji and Si Feng are playing hard to get, which frustrates the hell out of both of them. Xuan Ji is trying to win back Si Feng and convince him to stay, while Si Feng himself is trying to win Xuan Ji’s heart, and she doesn’t even realize it. They’re both trying to woo each other, but they’re both being resistant, intentionally and unintentionally.
I have to admit, though, that the first few episodes were slow.
There aren’t major sparks during the first meeting between the leads. She just falls out of the sky into his arms, and he’s flustered by her sudden appearance and clinginess. The love story didn’t feel “epic” during the the first 4 episodes because it didn’t feel like there were any stakes. These were just 2 young disciples from different sects who had a stereotypical meet-cute. It was like watching a high school coming-of-age romcom.
Things start to get serious when Si feng is forced to wear the lover’s curse mask, meaning that he cannot love, or else every time he’s hurt by the one he loves, that mask will release a feather to his heart and he’ll feel unbearable pain. When all the feathers are released, he’ll die. This means that he has to stay away from Xuan Ji, but obviously, the drama can’t let that happen, so he’s constantly thrown into situations with her, he can’t stay away from her, and he ends up falling for her harder and harder against his will.
Xuan Ji trusts Si Feng completely and unconditionally (until episodes 37-47 that is). She is willing to go against her father and sect in order to protect him. She’s willing to sacrifice herself to save him. She’s willing to go rogue with her powers for him. When no one else trusts him, she does.
This makes Xuan Ji a very cathartic character to watch because she isn’t frustrating at all. She isn’t easily influenced and has her own views. She doesn’t share the same prejudiced views as the elder sect leaders. She is willing to disobey if it’s the right thing to do. She immediately clears up misunderstandings, like the one between her and Ming yan. We see her gradually become more mature through her increasing protectiveness over Si Feng.
I think because we see this rational and loyal side of Xuan Ji, we’re able to have a higher tolerance for her ignorance and mistakes later in the drama (but only barely).
The Reincarnations - What Does it Mean to Love a Soul?
Tumblr media
Si Feng fell for Xuan Ji 10 times in the mortal world, not including the very first time he falls for her when they were immortals in the heavenly realm.
I explained why I think Si Feng fell for Xuan Ji is this 10th reincarnation, but why did he fall for her in the past 9 lives? In the flashbacks, we see that in each life, Xuan Ji is cruel and heartless, and she still had the same unforgiving and ruthless demeanor as when she was the god of war. Is it because Si Feng’s soul is always going to be automatically attracted to Xuan Ji’s soul?
Because we only see brief glimpses of the past 9 lives (more specifically, we only see the ending of these lives), we don’t really know how they met or how Si Feng came to love her in each life. But, I would assume that there was something about Xuan Ji in each of her reincarnations that attracted her to Si Feng and completed him. Also, we know that Xuan Ji is capable of tenderness. As the god of war, she disliked fighting. As Mosha, she cared about Bailing. So, while Xuan Ji’s nature might be violent and cruel, I think that with each life, she learns about love and sincerity. If we assume that the flashbacks of the 9 lives are in order, then it would seem like Xuan Ji becomes more and more affected by Si Feng’s death with each successive lifetime. In the first life, she is completely indifferent to his beheading. but we see that she begins to become affected in the later lives, but tries to shove those emotions aside because they’re foreign and unfamiliar to her.
We get even less context for how Si Feng might have fallen for the god of war in the heavenly realm. We only know that Si Feng was the Jade Emperor’s son, and only gained a celestial anamorphic form after 10, 000 years. His true form is the Golden-feathered bird. He’s always appearing by the god of war’s side to listen to her vent, but the god of war only sees him as a stray bird who comes by to visit occasionally. Why did he fall for her? Did he empathize with her loneliness? Maybe she was his only friend, like he was her only friend, but she didn’t even realize it.
We also see that Si feng loves Xuan ji no matter who she is or what form she takes. Her gender doesn’t matter to him, and gender was never even an issue in the drama. The drama doesn’t give an explanation for why Bailing created a female body for the god of war (besides that he wanted to disguise Mosha’s appearance), but it also doesn’t matter. It’s a non-issue, and I love it. We just need to accept it, because the “why” isn’t important.
Xuan Ji has 3 different identities: The Star of Mosha (Luo Hou Ji Do), the god of war, and Xuan Ji the mortal. The god of war and Xuan Ji have the same “soul”, and that soul came from the glass of Mosha’s imprisonment lamp, and also from Mosha’s altered corporeal body. So, she is a part of Mosha, but has also become her own entity.
To Si Feng, all 3 identities are Xuan Ji. The memories, emotions, and experiences of all the identities are what made Xuan Ji Xuan Ji, and so he loves all of them.
But what made Xuan Ji finally crack so that she’s now able to love Si Feng in this 10th reincarnation? I think it has to do with her upbringing. We see in her previous 9 lives that she had a troubled upbringing filled with scheming and violence. So she was consumed by the darkest side of humanity and Si Feng couldn’t pull her out. But in this life, she grew up with an abundance of love, which made her want to learn how to love, which allowed her to open up to Si Feng. In this way, the drama shows that Si Feng alone isn’t enough to redeem her, but it took the love of her friends and family to help her grow a heart.
The Angst
Tumblr media
Okay. So. Si Feng has probably suffered more than any male lead in xianxia history. I think someone said that he has a martyr complex. But, I’d like to break down the type of angst that are present in dramas.
There is angst that is harmless, and there is angst that is damaging to the relationship.
Harmless angst is usually angst by external forces. Like parents who don’t allow their kids to be together. Like in AOL when Xufeng mistakenly thinks that Jin Mi might be his sister so he can’t be with her. In L&R, this kind of external angst happens when Si Feng mistakenly thinks that Xuan Ji likes her 6th sect brother Ming yan. Xuan Ji isn’t purposely hurting Si Feng, but it’s an unintentional misunderstanding.
Damaging angst is when the couple turns against each other and become enemies. This happened when Jin Mi kills Xufeng and says she never loved him (which technically is true since her heart was re-sealed so she didn’t even understand what love was when she said it). In L&R, this happens Xuan Ji sides with her sect and attacks Si Feng when he reveals his demon form. This happens again when they confront each other outside the Lize Palace and she announces that she’s done with him and breaks ties with him. This happens again when she stabs him, says she regrets having ever known and loved him, and proceeds to try to stab him again. In Love and Redemption, Xuan Ji keeps saying hurtful things to him. There’s not just one moment of betrayal, but a constant onslaught of betrayals over 10 episodes that make the relationship feel like it’s entered a point of no return.
The masochistic side of me likes love/hate relationships and damaging angst. I grew up with it. TVB dramas have a lot of it. My favourite is the angst in Raymond Lam and Charmain Sheh dramas like Drive of Life and Lethal Weapons of Love and Passion. But despite over 20 years of watching dramas, I was still not prepared for the pain and suffering in Love and Redemption.
The good news is that they make up fairly quickly, though some may argue too quickly and easily.
What I Enjoyed
Other xianxia romances usually only have 1 mortal reincarnation. This has 10 reincarnations (even if only shown briefly), and I love that. The leads have already had such a rich history together, but they don’t remember, and so the romance is about them falling in love all over again in this life, while also slowly remembering the love they had in their previous lifetimes.
The world-building was also compelling, and the supporting characters were great. They were the voice of reason and talked sense into the main leads to help move the plot forward. I also liked how the ML and FL each had their own personal relationship with the supporting characters separate from each other. For instance, Ming yan has a childhood friendship with Xuan Ji, but he also develops his own friendship with Si Feng. Wu Ziqi was once Mosha’s helper, and also knew the god of war, but also forms his own friendship with Si Feng. Zi Hu is also friends with both Xuan Ji and Si Feng. Having separate friendships with the leads means that the supporting characters are unbiased. They’re not likely to help the ML more than the FL or vice versa, but they’re able to see both sides of things. They help the leads, but they’re also critical of them, and is therefore able to help the leads make rational decisions. It reminds me of the friendship dynamics in Avatar where the characters have unique relationships with each other. Like Toph has her own relationship dynamic with Sokka and Katara, which is different from Aang’s relationship dynamic with them.
It goes without saying that Si Feng is the best part of the drama. He plays an emotionally repressed character, so it always feels like the heavens opened up when he smiles, and Xuan Ji seems to be the only one who can make him smile. SF's best moments are when he shows moments of vulnerability, like when he begs Xuan Ji not to cut ties with him, or when he's so happy to the point of disbelief and he's afraid of it being true that he begins to slightly quiver, like when he kept asking XJ if she was really the one who took off his mask. You can see him break down and not being able to contain his emotions and how much he’s desperately yearning for his love to be reciprocated.
I like that the FL has the same personality throughout the drama. I'm always annoyed when the FL's personality takes a 360-degree turn when she has a sudden "awakening" when her past life memories come flooding back and she instantly matures and becomes jaded. In Love and Redemption, Xuan Ji stays her bubbly self, even when she’s burdened with responsibilities. Hell, even when she becomes a mother, she’s still aloof and playful. In episode 52 or so when she burns her leg and refuses to leave Si Feng’s house, she acts like a helpless little girl again. Si Feng tells her that such a small injury wouldn’t even faze someone as powerful as she is, but she reminds him that he once told her that even if she didn’t feel pain, her body would know the pain, and so she should always tell him when she’s hurt. I just like this throwback to the earlier episodes to show that while Xuan Ji has grown and matured, she’s still the same person who wants to be loved and pampered.
Weaknesses of the Drama
Xuan Ji is a really multi-faceted and complex character (because of her villainous tendencies), but Crystal Yuan doesn’t completely deliver in all of her performances of the character. Crystal Yuan is great when she’s acting cute (though it reminds me a lot of Zhao Liying’s acting in Journey of Flower, even the voice actress is the same actress), but I feel like Crystal Yuan’s crying scenes are a little lacking. Also, Xuan Ji is a character who is often in moral and emotional conflict because she starts to feel emotions that she doesn’t understand since she’s never felt them before, but sometimes Crystal isn’t very convincing when trying to convey this internal conflict. For instance, in the scene when she thought Si Feng was getting married to Ah Lan, I thought that her devastation at seeing that should have been a bit more palpable. I mean, you finally found the love of your life after searching him for over a year and now he’s in front of you, about to get married to another woman. There should be more pain, anger, regret, disbelief, a battle of emotions unfolding on the face. There should have been more deflation, more staggering. I think back to when Tang Yan was watching Luo Jin get married to someone else in Princess Weiyoung, or when Jin Mi was watching Xufeng propose to Sui He in AOL, and the desperation and shock was subtle, but still so strong. You could feel the drop in your own stomach when sympathizing with the female character.
I also obviously disliked how Xuan Ji didn’t believe Si Feng. But I would have understood why she didn’t believe him (even when he logically explained his innocence) since there are so many people pressuring her judgment, but what I can’t get over is how she had it in herself to physically hurt him. And she already hurt him before too, so she knows how much it pains her to hurt him. She already regretted the act before. But because she mistakenly thinks that he killed Hao Chen, she decides that she needs to kill him? Does Hao Chen mean that much to you that you’d be willing to sacrifice Si Feng in order to avenge him? That was my breaking point for her character.
I didn’t like how Hao Chen’s arc was resolved. For 1000 years, he thought he was right and never had any regrets. He was obsessed with controlling his friend Mosha to the point of killing him and sealing his soul away. He then created another being, became possessive over that being to the point of falling in love with it (without admitting it), and then follows his creation down to the mortal world, and wrecks havoc on the mortals, especially Si Feng. And when Hao Chen learns that he can no longer control or redeem Xuan Ji, he decides that he needs to kill her in order to prevent Mosha from coming back. But then suddenly, because of a few words and visions from the Jade Emperor, he immediately has a change of heart and sees the error of his ways. It’s just so anti-climactic. Yuan Long’s ending was also underwhelming. I just wanted the good guys and bad guys to fight it out without divine intervention.
While I sympathize with Si Feng and agree that it's like watching a puppy get kicked over and over again, he honestly gets jealous way too easily and is too insecure. He also keeps everything to himself and sucks at communicating. We blame Xuan Ji for being too quick at jumping to conclusions, but Si Feng also jumps to conclusions too and causes unnecessary pain for himself.
Overall Impression
Overall, despite the frustrations, I really liked the consistency of the drama. It flows as one complete narrative and all the subplots are well intertwined with the main plot. With other reincarnation xianxia dramas, you could divide the story into distinct arcs, but it’s harder to do with this one since you have arcs that overlap and transcend other arcs. There’s the mask arc, the god of war arc, the reincarnation arc, the demon identity arc, the Mosha arc, etc. Before one arc is completed, another arc is introduced.
If you’re looking for a be-all-end-all, til the end of time and end of the world romance, this is it. While it has many similar tropes to other xianxias like AOL, I think this executes the tropes better. Although if you’ve already watched AOL or other xianxias, you might be more immune to the angst (even though this drama is angstier). But if you watch this drama first, I think it sets the bar pretty high for other xianxia dramas.
The chemistry and sexually tension is also through the roof (and the BTS will have you raising your eyebrows - are costars normally that flirty and touchy feely on set?)
So yes, this drama does live up to the hype. More meta posts to come because I’m still going through withdrawal.
(Just checked the word count on this review, and it’s over 4700 words. I’m clearly an obsessed mess).

1) I use Firefox and there's an add-on that conducts reverse image searches through a few index sites like Google, TinEye, Bing, Yandex and Baidu, though I just mostly run it through Google. 9 of 10 times I get what I was looking for. For videos I go by some screenshots or thumbnails (those are harder, will check if there's an add-on for that)
2) hmnehehehenehe >:) idk frend, having worked for the connections, ratting them out to and making a deal with (a corrupt, possibly infiltrated by connections) BSAA, known and probably worked w MM in developing and later imprinting Eveline, and being kidnapped by her, no doubt telling her what her baby would be used for. MM told the lords, Ethan and quasi-told the villagers so we know she doesn't give af who knows what she's doing (that is resurrecting her dead 10yo daughter through a 6mo bby to 'grow to fully control the masses' ... huh, and here I thought she JUST wanted her daughter back, I kinda paralleled to Ethan and what he does for Rosie to her bc they love their daughters and MM just undid it with that sentence LMAO. I love rewatching and catching things I didn't before). Ethan being completely ignorant of all that except 'shady sht is happening and my wife is in it' and boy isn't THAT a gut punch. miia must be getting eaten alive by guilt by the end. chris, too. And goodness, if they hide things from Rose 'for her own good' I'll be the first to throw them into a pit of molten lava no matter how much I like them >:(
((and who might be the 'moldy little bird'?? corrupt bsaa? connections infiltrator? ...imagine it turns out to be one of chris' team :))))) the betrayal! the angst! the guilt! -it won't be but might as well theorize))
3) It may sound weird, but it's just nice to see someone reacting just like I did, just freaking sobbing by the end. I liked Ethan well enough in 7, bc man's determination and loyalty and the '-dude it's been three years! -it may be a prank but i NEED to know'(*) and the 'what the FUCK's and 'that is not groovy ;_;' being scared out of his mind but still pushing ahead and helping as he could and giving his word and probably pestering until Zoe, cryptic and understandably untrusting in her horrid situation, was saved. Village made me love him asdfghjklñ (and all the whump was a giant bonus ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
(*) as she was at sea at the time of disappearance, she was probably declared dead within 4-6 months of no communication. Be it denial, or just still holding onto hope, his need to know for closure is very relatable, even if he had almost completely moved on. ;_; Ethan ♥
1) Oh, that's cool. I kinda guessed it was reverse image search for the pics, even though in my experience that rarely works for memes XD but still the videos one is impressive XD
2) Dude I'm just getting so many emotions because, they built up so much story in Village and I love stories as any other human being, you know? But we have all those gaps from Mia's side and it's so UGH! I wanna know! Like in general, when I don't know someone's side, I tend to assume best case scenario and that is that Mia didn't know about the BSAA's corruption, at least at first. When Eveline crashed the ship, the Connections practically allowed Mia to be their test subject to see Eveline's development, monitoring the situation through Lucas. It's no wonder Mia ratted out the Connections to the BSAA, especially hoping that would give her some immunity and witness protection. If nothing else, Ethan had fought so hard to save her and she owed to him to make things clear. Then she realized Ethan was mold and, wait a second, wouldn't the BSAA know about that? Why didn't they tell us anything... unless... - and that would make even more sense considering she tried to keep it a secret. Because if she said anything, the BSAA people who knew would simply get rid of her as a liability. But then Chris seemed absolutely devastated at Ethan's "death" so she considered she could trust him with that secret. I don't know if I can hold out hope for any DLC to be focused on Mia, from the moment she gets kidnapped by Miranda (I genuinely think that happened earlier in the day that the game begins), up to the moment Chris saves her. But I think it'd be interesting to see, especially if we get to know more about how much she knew about Ethan's mold status and since when. Like, as Miranda's prisoner, I'm pretty sure Miranda must have interrogated her about it, and about Rose.
Again, about Miranda, she did love her daughter... but maybe too much. Through her dialogue (especially her lines in her boss fight) you get the impression that she considers her daughter's presence in her life a need. And ok, I understand, maternal love and all that, but... It's like, you've never hunted before. You're stranded and starving, and suddenly you find a chicken. You haven't eaten in days, you NEED food, maybe after a couple days you find it in yourself to kill the chicken and cook it. I feel that the equivalent of that is Miranda's need for her daughter, the chicken being the villagers, the Lords, Ethan, Rose, etc etc. She was so confident that she deserved her daughter back because she NEEDED her, that she kept voicing that exact need and feeling that it justified her atrocities.
But also, in the century she's spent powered by the Megamycete, she also grew attached to that power. Like, looking at her notes about the Lords, you kinda get why she didn't want Moreau or Donna as vessels for Eva. I mean, that's why she was horrible, a loving parent would still love a child with physical or mental "abnormalities", while Miranda was like LOL nope, but you get the point. Heisenberg and Dimitrescu were perfectly stable in their mutations (I mean, Dimitrescu only transformed after the tremendous grief of losing her three daughters AND getting stabbed with a specially lethal dagger), but they're not as strong as Miranda, right? The only creatures those two commanded were zombies. Miranda wanted someone to control the MASSES, like she herself pretty much did with the villagers. She let Ethan kill the Lords because she wanted to see what he could survive through; if he could survive all her "failed experiments", that would mean Rose could too. She would surpass all of them combined. So, of course, the more Ethan fought and proved how strong the mold had made his body (an attribute which no wonder he'd passed down to Rose), the more excited she got. Rose was perfect for Miranda's fucked-up idea for a replacement child, because yes, she was looking for a replacement, not a second chance at motherhood. God she's disgusting.
I have the feeling that Ethan himself didn't want to know anything about Mia's involvement. At the end of re7 (with the good ending) he says "[Mia] wants to start over, put all of this behind us. Maybe this is where the next door opens." God bless him, he's quick to forgive and forget at least in regards to Mia's shady job like, less than a day since he found out about it. He just went "I love my wife, I don't care what she was involved in, she wants a new start and I want to be there with her for it." Like dude really did mean his wedding vows, whatever they were. So with that in mind, I don't think he really cared to know much about that stuff. He trusted Mia was not going to get involved in shady business again and he wanted to put all that history behind. It's just the emotional trauma that he didn't want to pretend wasn't there. And all that is part of the reasons Ethan didn't deserve a SPECK of the shit he went through. And why I want to see impact of his death on Mia and Chris, because despite their good intentions and how they genuinely cared for Ethan, they still took away some of his autonomy... Mia with not telling him about his mold status, and Chris with not telling him about the plan. And again, I fully understand why they did what they did. But I want to see them understand that Ethan didn't deserve being treated like a baby, you know?! And of course, the same goes for Rose. Even though what happened to her at six months old is unfathomably horrendous, or maybe even BECAUSE it happened to her, she deserves to be in the know from the start.
I'm pretty sure that the "moldy little bird" is either most of the BSAA (I mean, they were still creating bioweapons for their own use so we can assume they're deeply corrupt) or people from the Connections who have infiltrated it, because the BSAA is too busy creating bioweapons to notice sketchy people working in it. It would be awesome if it were one of Hound Wolf Squad. I mean, they do happen to know LOTS of stuff about Miranda... Yeah, it probably won't happen, but it's certainly fun to make theories!
3) "That is not groovy" is epic Ethan Winters moment. The rest of the epicness is covered by his immense love, like, can we just appreciate how much this man loves? And it's not shown through mushy romance or woe-is-me angst, it's shown through continually proving, through his actions and determination, how much the people he loves mean to him, how his one thought during the nightmares he faces is that he's going through them for his family's sake. And the thing is, the narrative doesn't try to paint him as special for that. He's still your everyday Joe, your coworker, your neighbor. And because of that he can be so freaking relatable. Like I'm one to admit I wasn't too fond of him at first, but was amused by how relatable he was with all his "What's going on"s. I was like yeah, dude, you and me both. We're in this together. They really nailed it with making Ethan an admirable husband and dad and a very relatable dude at the same time and like, honestly, if you don't like him, your fucking loss haha. Keep your tears while we shed our own for him T_T

Rabbit of Lizzington Hell, to her sister-in-ink the honourable Pumpkin, citizen of Alternate Universe – Canon Divergence, perpetuator of Elizabeth Keen Whump, and keeper of her affections:
3) Oh gosh, please don't jinx me. Please.
4) Good luck!! My one course ended last week but I still wake up, see it's noon or something, and panic for a second because oh no I actually got eight hours of sleep I gotta get to work. But anyway, you can do this! I think I speak for all of us when I say I believe in you and I'm proud of you however it may work out. <3
5/6) That makes total sense! I 100% get that, and there're absolutely no worries. Fic reading is for the enjoyment of the individual after all, so do what ya gotta do to ensure that enjoyment (including waiting until a better time to dive in). And IDK about anyone else, but just knowing you want to read my fic(s) makes me fgsfsdfjsdh.
7) I enjoy 'em too! But maybe I just love reading all of your responses to asks (and anything you post/write really but pffshfhsh), who's to say? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
+
So I'm writing this new one-shot (though at this point, it's so long my conscience is demanding whether it's ethical to keep it all as one chapter), and it's sort of wrapped around an actual Blacklister case. Hence, the working title is in the format of your typical TBL episode title. But the name of the made-up Blacklister in question sounds kind of inane (and is unchangeable for plot reasons,,, man I love trapping myself in a corner) so now I'm. Torn between that or what I normally do for titles, i.e., a generic phrase from the story that encompasses its tone/theme in some way. Which I don't have a problem with per se--I usually have fun coming up with titles--but like. I was kind of proud of having a TBL-formatted title...
ANyway, I'm just telling you all this because I related to that post you made about not usually having trouble titling fics but encountering some for your current WiP LOL. Although, now that I think about it... If you happen to have a preference, feel free to throw it out. I know you don't have all the info since you don't actually know the two Potential Titles, but your opinion will nevertheless be received with gratitude and considered with care. :P
+
I am definitely seeing that "virtual pen pals" thing you mentioned before. Totally did not spend half an hour looking at primary sources of letters written in the ancient world to see how they're formatted all for The Meme or anything. Because pfffttt that would be such a fatuous use of my time. :))
...

1) I'm so sorry this is eons late (or at least, it feels that way to me 😅) !! I'm like a broken record saying this, but I've been really busy because the summer semester is coming to an end, and so I couldn't afford the time needed to sit down and reply to this message of yours (not that I'm complaining about the length! As I said before, I love the long messages, and I feel like they're now a trademark of yours 😂)
2) Thank you for the kind words! I really appreciate them!! 💛
3) ooooooh new one-shot?! And it's so long that it might not even be a one-shot?! Count me in!
4) I have zero preference when it comes to titles of someone's work!! I say, go with your gut! Choose whatever feels right to you!! And anyway, it's the story that's important! (which I greatly look forward to)
5) definitely virtual pen pals
6) your sign off made me chuckle aloud, my friend - it was very much appreciated 😂😂😂

Fanfic writer ask meme! E, J, M, N, O, S, T, and W?
E: What character do you identify with most? Is there a certain fic of yours that captures these qualities particularly well?
Lowkey Archie Andrews, not because I’m as stupid or impulsive as he is (I love him but it’s true), but just because he feels very passionately about things, he wants to do good and help people however he can, and it seems like a lot of the time he’s pushing down his hurt to keep moving forward. And sometimes I do that too. I appreciate and can relate to his desire to do good and help the people he loves even when he has no idea how to do it. I think my fic Rotten Work shows the “pushing down his hurt” part of him pretty well, while my fic Sweet Peas for Sweet Pea shows the sweeter, loving side of him well.
Also Din Djarin and Eric from Santa Clarita Diet, because even though Din is on the opposite scale of being a threat (he’s a 10 and Eric and I are like a 2 at most), we’re all so very socially awkward. Unfortunately I haven’t written a fic for either of them that shows this side.
J:  What’s your favorite fanfic trope?  Have you written it?
I feel like hurt/comfort/whump is an obvious one, but yes I have written this. Comfort fics where the only plot is for characters to turn to one character and be like “Hey this canon thing that happened to you was traumatic are you okay?” and actually deal with it are great. I have written this too.
Honestly probably Role Swap AUs. I feel like this is another obvious one, considering that I have the tag ‘role swap aus are the best aus’ but it’s TRUE. And yes, I have written this - the Doctor-Companion swap AU obviously, but I also wrote a role swap AU for the movie Princess Mononoke a few years ago. That’s what started my obsession. I kind of put it on hiatus and haven’t updated it in a few years but I still love it.
I also love soulmate AUs of any kind and also the “Five plus one things” fic, but I’ve never written either of these things.
M: What’s the weirdest AU scenario you’ve ever come up with?  Did it turn into a story?
I once came up with an AU for the show Friends where Rachel ended up going to the opera with Emily instead of ditching her, and Rachel realized she was bi and she and Emily ended up together. I had a whole plan for it, too! If the motivation ever struck me I would write it now.
I also once came up with a Shrek AU for my character Kris and Wanda Maximoff. Wanda was the “Shrek” character (Pietro too), Kris was the “Fiona” character.
There’s also that Zeddison Santa Clarita Diet AU I made a post about lol
N: Any fic ideas brewing that you’d care to share?
Three Good Omens fic ideas: 1) Horsepeople struggling to raise Adam, 2) Frannie is in a car crash and Famine flips out, and 3) Pollution is critically injured and the Horsepeople bring them to Aziraphale and Crowley.
Another Mandalorian imagine.
Another fic for A Christmas Prince focusing on Simon and Melissa. (They’re cute and I like them.)
A Power Rangers fic with my OC Rose.
Another Ben and Ryoko fic, maybe with this one Mal and the others meeting her too.
Indiana Jones AU-ish kind of fic where it’s the first movie but he has a wife (my OC) and they kick ass together and are basically Rick and Evie from The Mummy except they’re assholes.
O: What are your thoughts on people writing fanfic of your fanfic?
I LOVE IT. It’s happened about twice now for my Doctor-Companion role swap AU and both times I was like “Oh! My! Gosh!” It’s amazing.
S: How do you feel about fan art inspired by your writing?
I love it. I would name my first born child after anyone who made me some.
T: Any fanfic tropes you can’t stand?
Alpha/Omega AUs. Dom/Sub AUs. Hurt no comfort. Porn without plot. Character bashing (unless I’m in a very specific mood). Major character death.
W: What is your favorite pairing to write?  Favorite pairing to read?
I think my favourite pairing to write is probably the one I’ve written for most often, which is Sweet Pea/Archie from Riverdale. They have such a fun mix of personalities - Sweet Pea is rough and angry, Archie is rough and sweet, they’re stupid AF but are very passionate and care about things a lot. Although I haven’t done a lot for them, it’s a fun dynamic to write!
My favourite pairing to read is definitely Donna and Ten. Platonic or romantic, either one is fine for me. They’re both just a one-braincell duo and Donna calling Ten out the fuck out while also caring about him a lot is my favourite thing. Anything they get themselves into is guaranteed to be hilarious, sad, or BOTH and it’s always wonderful.

1, 9, 15, 20 for the writing ask meme!
This time around all of these are for fics by the way.
1. Tell us about your current project(s)  – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?
Like I said in the last ask at any given time I have a stupidly high number of projects I’m working on but I will take this time to talk about the ridiculously long one I’m putting most of my energy toward now! (The tab is open right now and it is taunting me with that “last updated yesterday at [...]” notification and its 32,427 word wordcount.)
I won’t say exactly what it’s about even though it’s not that hard to figure out and several people already know exact details but progress is generally pretty good! Not the fastest I’ve ever written because I write in fits and starts but it’s going pretty good! (Just jinxed it though for sure.) I’m working on chapter five of a planned ten, and I really hope I don’t overshoot that by accident. It’s fun! It’s definitely more like the things I used to write when it comes to like... the actual angst/“whump” part because there’s a lot of that here, and I’m very really mean to readers with a couple of these cliffhangers. Chapter two and chapter four are especially rude, sorry.
I love all of it. I love that I get to write about people overcoming hardship and coming together and also beating the shit out of people who hurt their loved ones. I genuinely love what I’m writing now and I think it’s probably one of my best works and I’m glad that I decided to write it all out in advance before posting it because I feel like that gives me time to really perfect it. It also makes it easier to go back and seed plot elements through the prewritten chapters, which is helpful because I keep forgetting about a character and going back to make sure that they get to be there because they’re, y’know, the main protagonist of the show. (Don’t worry there is still a character arc and a story she has, it just gets lost in the shuffle a little because there are like... six storylines going on at once that need to intersect. I think six, anyway. There are a lot. Jeez, I think it may be closer to seven, counting the villains...)
Anyway please [Eric Andre “let me in” voice] show me support when I finally post it because I imagine the fandom will be relatively in brumation when I finally do all things considered.
9. Are you more of a drabble or a longfic kind of writer? Pantser or plotter? Do you wish you were the other?
I refuse to write really short things, it has to be at least 1,000 words for some reason, but I do both! I prefer my longfics, I think they give me more time to write plot and flesh out characters, but I’ve found that a good median wordcount for me is...like...6,000 words? That’s usually what I fall on when I limit myself to something under 10,000 that has the potential for more than just 1-2,000 words. But I do like to read and write both! As evidenced by some of my current projects shaping up to be over 50,000 words at least if they haven’t already left that count in the dust by now (hi, Half Light, you stupidly long son of a bitch).
And I am the hellish combination of both! I usually know at least how I want it to end, but the entire journey from A to B is a complete mystery to me. Sometimes I’ll have elements I want to incorporate or characters I want to include and I’ll plan for them but I will never, ever write down my outline. The only time I write down outlines it’s when I need to know the concrete timeline for something that’s set in the past or is taking major divergent choices or both (i.e., I made a timeline outline for Heartless leading up to when Eric approaches Dorothy, a timeline outline for Two of Spades when I eventually actually work on that, a timeline outline for what I nicknamed the “I’m no longer baby I want power AU,” etc). Literally every other time I am absolutely flying by the seat of my pants. I don’t know what I’d do without Hedgi who helps me plot at least half the things I write (at least for the fandoms she’s also in), usually after I try to write them and immediately get stuck like a puppy who tried to jump into a lake and found out the shoreline was actually just a bog.
15. Which is harder: titles or summaries (or tags)?
Oh, it really depends. I’m alright at nailing tags down, unless there are categories I want to use that don’t already have a set tag, but sometimes when I think of the concept for a fic it comes ready-made with a summary and I don’t have to think about that at all, or I’m directly inspired by a phrase/lyric/etc and I can just use that for the title and spend hours deliberating on a summary. Luckily for the project I’m working on now the conceit can just be the summary, and the title took a tiny bit of research but I knew what I wanted the bare bones to be and I just needed the actual names/terms. I do think in general, though, summaries are a smidge harder than titles for me.
12. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)
I really, really want to answer this one to talk about the different hidden references, relationship development, and foreshadowing that I baked into damn near every level of the big project I’ve been talking about because it’s in literally everything right down to the chapter titles (and there’s a hint to pay attention to them when you read, especially once we get to chapters 6-10, which I am extremely pumped to write), but I also really don’t want to spoil anything, so... time to be as numbingly vague as possible, I guess.
I’m foreshadowing that a character will develop powers by the final act, of course, but I’m also foreshadowing that a different character will not only develop them but use them to basically save the life of another character--and related to that, there is intense foreshadowing of a character using certain things to save someone else’s life at around the same time, which is not subtle at all if you know what you’re looking for (mainly because I slipped it into plain sight) but is part of some nice red herrings if I do say so myself. It also really makes me laugh that I decided to do some, um, “homophobia-shadowing,” where I just... imply that a character is homophobic. I dunno why I just think that’s a funny thing to do even if it has real repercussions for certain characters later.
There’s some character development mixed that I’m really excited for because it allows a character to go in a completely different direction than they do in canon but in a way that I think still feels really right for them. This happens a couple times, actually, but this one in particular is something I knew had to happen the second I realized how to tie this plot thread back into everything else. I think it’s exactly what the character could’ve needed if this had gone down and I’m really excited to write it. The other character should’ve just been allowed to do this in canon because I think it would’ve fucking ruled.
Also, in everything I write that’s comics-based, whether it’s fic for the comic directly or for a show/movie using comics as source material, everything is a reference. That number code? That could be anything from the first time someone appeared in a comic mixed with the publishing date of the comic itself (i.e. if someone appeared for the first time in 1964 but the comic began publishing in 1959 I’ll use 6459 or 5964) to the creator’s date of birth. I think that I use famous writers of the character/potential creators of the character as street names or last names or aliases whenever I need to bring them up is a lot more obvious. Same with how I use writer/artist initials as “random letters” if I think a code would realistically have one mixed in--I just checked a document for an example of this and found “ADBP5519MWGK6419.”
I also reuse direct lines of dialogue if I think they fit the situation--for example, in Butterfly Effect I lifted the “World War I chic” line directly from Giffen’s Doom Patrol run, which I mentioned in the author’s note, and there’s dialogue in my current big project that’s a direct reference to/play on the “I wish you’d died instead of Mom” line in the JSA Infinite Crisis tie-in (Johns is a fuckin’ hack for that one though and it made no sense for what he used it for, a better line would’ve been “I bet you wish I’d died instead of Mom,” but we don’t have time for that), and I’ll probably directly reference dialogue from JSA/JSA at some point in chapter nine or chapter ten. (Think really hard about how that arc opens if it’s one you’re familiar with, lmao, and remember--there’s no time travel to undo things here!)

Thank you! I’m so late answering these, I reblog some ask memes and then I didn’t have the spoons to answer the asks I got *eyeroll*. Anyway, here goes.
5. Top five formative books?
- Harry Potter, if only because I was obsessed with it for years and that’s where I first wrote fanfics.
- Le Pacte des Marchombres (Pierre Bottero). I don’t think that was ever translated into English, but it was my favorite book for a long time. It taught me a lot about storytelling, poetry, worldbuilding and more.
- The Lord of the Rings, because reasons. Plus, amazing conlangs, and a lot of great art that shapes my imaginary worlds.
- The Count of Monte-Christo (Alexandre Dumas). It was one of the first “adult” books I read that weren’t for school, and it shook me.
- Basically any Discworld book, but especially Night Watch and the Tiffany series. How to weave worldbuilding and political commentary, plus, well, the political commentary itself. And incredible characters.
17. What things (scenes/topics/character types) are you most comfortable writing?
Angst and whump, all the way. Hurt/Comfort is my happy place, I think. These just come much easier to me than happy fluff or basically anything else, and for a truly angsty fic, I can chuck out several thousand words in one go. But what I actually like the most is the comfort/recovery part, even if it doesn’t come as easily.
In terms of characters, it’s a delight for me to write autistic characters, because I don’t have to spend half my time thinking “what would an allistic person do in this situation” and having to relate it to things I’ve seen other people do. I can just close my eyes and feel. But I also enjoy the challenge of writing other perspectives, especially characters with different disabilities. I try not to tell stories that aren’t mine to tell, but the border isn’t always easy to find.
22. Tell us about the books (fics) on your “to write” list
There are so many! I have 3 RNM WIPs currently being posted (our hands clasped so tight, Power Through and Complicated Truths), two The Gifted WIPs (but they’re on hiatus at this point, even though I still hope to get back to them) and a whole bunch of Leverage fics I haven’t touched in a while.
Fics that I haven’t started posting yet:
- the sequel to setting fire to our insides. It’s started, but I’ve put it on the backburner for a bit because of RL events that made it hit too close to home. I will write it, though.
- a s2 fix-it slash soulmate AU that doesn’t have a title yet (Malex, no love triangle). I won’t start posting it until the end of the season, but it’s coming along nicely.
- a Leverage fusion that will probably be my Big Bang fic.
- a sequel to my Musketeers fusion (RNM Musketeers AU) where they finally take down Jesse Manes.
- maybe, at some point, a Malex AU where Michael is a painter and Alex a model with body image issues since the accident that took his leg.
- I still have a bunch of prompts to fill, so those too.

Character meme! Rose Tyler, Narvin, and Leela :)
this is gonna be so long so i’m gonna put it below the cut but also keep in mind i do not know a lot about narvin because i’ve only listened to 5 episodes of gallifrey kshjdf
rose
What I like about them- i love that she’s lower class i’m not going to beat around the bush. as someone who worked 2-3 minimum wage jobs all through high school to help my family the story of her being in that same situation working a shitty retail job living w her mom REALLY resonated and then her still being able to go on all those amazing adventures and never losing any of herself??? i love that so much
What I dislike about them- she treated mickey like shit and i hate that
Favourite moment- in the impossible planet when 10 is about to go down the elevator and they have literally the most tender interaction known to man and she has that “it’s hard” about the future of space travel which is so good because sci fi almost never acknowledges that it would all be literally so difficult.. and then the forehead kiss on the helmet and “not if i see you first” its just !!!! aaaaa
Least favourite moment- i really didn’t like when she was getting jealous of sarah jane before they made friends :( as someone who loves sarah jane that made me sad
A situation with this character that I want to see explored more- everything that’s going on in pete’s world!! her brother, her mom being w a parallel universe version of her dad, etc. she’s living in a whole parallel universe!! they could have had her comment on the differences/how it’s like w a different family dynamic etc
An interesting AU for this character- werewolf au.. just saying... we talk about this in the discord sometimes but au where she got bit during tooth and claw and it wasn’t like really bad or a big deal or anything she’s just werewolf
OTP (or OT3+ etc…. just… favourite ship)- her and 9 :’)
Other ships?- HER AND MARTHA HER AND MARTHA HER AND MARTHA
BROTP- her and mickey !! they’re best friends end of discussion and i wish they had been written better. also her and sj... once they make up
NOTP- her and tentoo :/ like im sorry but the way 10 just dropped him off with her and expected that to be okay and to replace him for her and the fact that they all conveniently forgot that tentoo is half donna?? like he’s not ten and to expect him to be like ten for her is uhm. i do not like it
A headcanon- that she’s sorta like a mom to tony and she takes him around and does little adventures with him and reads to him and all that :’)
narvin
What I like about them- i love that he’s a little bit rude !! i love that in a person. i love that he’s in a bad mood often. i also love that he is always .2 seconds away from a panic attack because i think he’s very relatable
What I dislike about them- mean to leela :( but apparently that changes later on...
Favourite moment- i really liked the andred reveal not gonna lie and his reaction to that was uhm. SORTA great and sorta great voice acting as well as in terms of story/character. like that was. much to think about. and then he got SHOT which. i do like whump
Least favourite moment- whenever he calls leela mean names. :( also he’s sorta a cop
A situation with this character that I want to see explored more- again i really don’t know a lot about him yet and i’m sure in like a year when i’ve listened to all of gallifrey i’ll have a WAY better answer to this question but as of now i think since the guy andred was pretending to be was like his only friend and then he found out that he was actually lying to him the whole time to get to see more of his reaction to that would have been good
An interesting AU for this character- ROLESWAP AU W HIM AND LEELA ROLESWAP AU W HIM AND LEELA ... HE’S the doctor’s companion(still a gallifreyan, just left home for a little while to travel and then came back) who’s trying to readjust to life on gallifrey AND trying to protect romana but the new cia coordinator(started out as an ambassador from another planet but now they let her stay??? and they’re just?? letting her into the government as a high ranking official even though she’s an alien??? outrageous) won’t get off his ass
OTP (or OT3+ etc…. just… favourite ship)- i truly do not know enough about him yet to really really answer this but i do think he’s sorta in love with romana AND leela AND brax a little bit
BROTP- i mean it WAS him and the guy andred was pretending to be.. before :(
NOTP- i really don’t know enough yet !! i dont :(
A headcanon- i just like the concept that even though he and brax don’t trust each other politically they DO get together sometimes to just be bastards about things and complain
leela
What I like about them- she literally just has such fuck off energy. she is blunt. she doesn’t know what the hell is going on. she has prophetic visions. she can and WILL go feral at any time. she’s literally the most off the shits possible character and i LOVE her.
What I dislike about them- in the show at least they didn’t do a lot with her development and after a while her character felt sorta flat :(
Favourite moment- im blanking on tv moments but i really like in zagreus where she’s just there being in love with romana, going apeshit trying to attack people, and eating dreamscape food and i LOVE that for her
Least favourite moment- when she left the doctor to be with andred. bleuugh.
A situation with this character that I want to see explored more- definitely more about her family/planet/childhood!! i want to learn about the culture.. about what influenced her character.. parts of her tradition she kept and parts she left behind..
An interesting AU for this character- i do sorta have this one where its human au in the 80s and romana is running for office and she and leela are in love and have to like sorta sneak around and navigate the press and also leela is a trucker
OTP (or OT3+ etc…. just… favourite ship)- her and romana of course...
Other ships?- i mean. all four of them do sort of be in love in gallifrey dont they...
BROTP- her and 4 were pretty good... her and her k9 skjdhf
NOTP- her and andred. blech. disgosteng...
A headcanon- i just. h. in the above mentioned au she takes romana on overnight rides sometimes and they just drive for like 100 miles w the radio on really soft being in love..

Writer's Meme: 34,37,38
fic writer meme
38. Talk about a review that made your day.
Oh man. I love all the reviews I get, but especially the ones with details? And of every single review I’ve ever recieved, the ones I get for prowlcoswave fics are always held really close to my heart, because it’s my made-up OT3 that I’m really passionate about.
Aaaaaand all the rest of these will be Under A Cut (because I have Opinions and because I’m gonna ramble about my WIPs). I am hoping, so, so hard that the readmore on this works.
34. What are your thoughts on non-con and dub-con?
I am prefacing this with the fact that I’ve written both of those (not published on ao3 or anything, just in google docs).
this post more or less sums up my thoughts on the matter.
That being said, I haven’t come across a fic with those themes/subjects (specifically non con) that I’ve actually enjoyed? Usually because I want it to be handled in a very specific way. And, I want a genuinely happy ending.
That being said, I find dubcon to be interesting just because there’s such a huge spectrum of it. Like, I think I posted here about a dream I had where Prowl and Soundwave decided to get married or something–they didn’t want to, but were willing to do it For The Cause. So that, to me, is dubcon–even if it ended up being a genuine romance eventually (which, I think it did? I don’t actually remember, but I’d like to think dream!me believes in happy endings just as much as awake!me), it started out as something very different.
But then you have Character A willing to sleep with someone to get intel, or to get back at someone, or for other reasons that aren’t about Character B except what they can get out of it, that, to me, is also dubcon, because in an Ideal World, they certainly wouldn’t be sleeping together.
I find dubcon interesting to think about from a character perspective: what are they willing to do in order to accomplish X objective? Are they willing to accept the consequences? Do they even think about the consequences? And when those consequences happen–no matter what they are–what then? What about the other characters that care about them? How do they handle it?
37. Talk about your current wips.
AW YEAH something fun :D
I do have an overarching storyline for the prowlcoswave series, which involves plenty of angst and (sigh) plot. I also know exactly how it’s going to end. The current issue I’m running into is…writing Soundwave and Prowl is hard, because how I think is so antithetical to how they think. Cosmos is #relatable, and also easy for me to write. But I love these three characters so much and I really want to do all of them justice and give them all equal POV ‘screentime’. Another issue I’m running into is that I just don’t know how they sound. You know, since I’m not writing characters based on a voice that I can actually hear, and go back and listen to when I get lost? Y eah. But I love the idea, and the feedback/kudos I got from the last fic was very invigorating, so I might start just posting oneshots (and possibly really, really long oneshots) instead of multichapter fics.
I really really really want to update Scorecards but I don’t want it to turn into the prowlcoswave prequel. I’d like that one to just be coswave? So I’m struggling to differentiate the two (very similar) AUs.
Uhh. I’m gonna continue:
TFP shattered glass
IDW megawave
In the Name of Science
heading home in reverse
No idea when. But it’ll happen!
Not planning to write a sequel to the prowl/soundwave cyberverse fic, because their actual characters turned out so differently from what I wrote. And, uhm. Also not really planning to update the RID15 fic, since I ended up not liking RID15 because they did my boy dirty!
Finally! Cyberverse spoilers below!
Deadceptor time!
I just. I have not fixated on anything as intensely as I have on those few pre-wake up Quintesson arc episodes of Cyberverse in years.
Prrrrobably not since Triage aired? Which. Yeesh. Eight years! Anyway.
I’m absolutely awed by how quickly I’m churning out content without going totally off the rails and writing myself into a hole–I’m wholly attributing this to the fact that I bothered to outline the fic first.
I really really want to know things: how did Perceptor know it was Dead End that had gotten out of the loop? Why didn’t he end up getting his optics fixed? Why is he the bartender now? Did he retire? What’s up with Dead End and Astrotrain’s relationship? Why did Dead End actually go to Megatron about the multiverse?
I also want to read other people’s fics. I want to hear their headcanons! I feel like I’m yelling into a (very receptive and agreeable) void. But I want the void to yell back! I want the void to disagree with me!
I really, really hope that when the fic diverges from canon, it’ll go over well–that it won’t just be a weird retelling of IDW1P2, that it won’t just be Dead End Whump Hour, and that I can grab these plot threads and weave them into something coherent and moreover, enjoyable. I’d love to have someone to bounce ideas off of, But. Most people haven’t seen the show yet. So. If you, the person reading this, has seen season 3 of cyberverse and are also interested in me talking at/to you about this fic, please let me know.
So. Yeah. If you’re looking for writing prompts, anon, please give me some cybertronian resistance found family. it doesn’t have to be deadceptor. just. found family. interfaction found family.

I have been tagged in a happyness chain post 😄😬 supposed to list five things that make me happy. Forgive me if these end up being lame; but ive been going through a really rough period sooooooo...
1: When I do something with my dog and she gets super excited and makes her stupidly happy face. We are talking mouth wide open in a puppy smile, tongue hanging out, panting even though she's not doing anything strenuous.
2: (When I'm up in the liquor store) Watching customers try to leave out of the wrong doors and nearly smack into them. The people that wave at the door like it might just be slow are very good too. Seeing people try to walk through doors and then stop abruptly because the doors don't open is very entertaining.
3: Funny memes and shitposts.
- Then rambling and adding to those posts back and forth with the OP and turning it into a whole dialogue script or one shot
-just shitty content that makes me happy and snort with laughter
(To add and specify; interacting with you humans. Passing around content and adding to it and sharing with eachother.)
4: Acomplishing a new or complicated move on aerial hoop. Especially if i get it on the first try. Also how nice it's made my back, shoulder, and arm muscles now that I've been doing it for a year.
5: Reed redemtion stories and convin fluff. I dont know why i like the pairing so much its just the whole getting past obstacles and falling in love factor ok. So I love Whump with happy fluff or just redemtion and fluff. I like the same type of stories in Reed900 but I like having the "I was a huge ass at first and have to make it up to you" addition. Really just any content that can distract my brain from its own thoughts. Escapism; living vicariously through characters I can relate too. Reed finding someine who tolerates his instability and BS.
One of you is the original tagger, and non of you are in anyway obligated to do this yourself (obviously) but I'm supposed to pass it on @emiliaf25 @kamskiplease @chicago-reeed @phcking-detective @phckingusername @gavinisqueertbh @deanwinnchesterisbae (can add you to this too mwahahha)
