Supremely disappointed in the Demeter movie. Spoilers ensue!
Let's start with what I liked:
I'm glad they decided to make Drac a hideous freak because at least he was interesting to look at. They showed him a lot (too much?) so thank goodness he was cool. You could maybe even play it off within book rules by saying that Dracula takes many forms, and if he wasn't worried about appearing as a man to fool others into entering legal trade of real estate/cargo transportation services with him, maybe he was appearing as this freaky gargoyle version because he just could.
The chef character was at least kinda compelling and I liked the storyline of him taking out one dude so he could steal a rowboat and try to escape, only for Drac to find him, kill him, and bring the empty boat back to the Demeter - ominously! If they'd played into the dramatic irony and played closer to the book story, it still would have fit and worked well.
Which is a great transition into what I did not like.
Firstly, they should have leaned a lot heavier into the dramatic irony. We as an audience know we're in for a Dracula movie...but the characters do and should not! They could have showed Dracula (in his freak ass form) taking out these dudes one by one, but the characters of the story? All they see is blood on the deck, and another man missing. You can draw out the characters and the story by making them decide how to react to the mystery and if/how to plot against each other.
If you read the subtext of the book, then you can maybe infer that the first mate has heard of Dracula, but you don't really know. None of the crew know of him. So you could have made it so some were skeptical, some were convinced it was supernatural, others are convinced it's some sort of religious punishment (the chef character story fits in), and they split into factions. So you're getting tense, charged moments between characters, but meanwhile you're also getting the horror porn satisfaction of scenes of Drac taking out each crewman (maybe overlaid, cut by cut...I can just imagine the cinnamontopography...
They showed Dracula to the other characters too soon. Characters knew it was a creepy being amongst them too soon. The horror lies in the wonder: is it a monster? Or is a man amongst us a monster?
They honestly could have added the dog and the boy and the doctor and maybe even the lady and still made the book story work. The lady didn't need to know about Dracula though. She could have been just an actual stowaway; easily Dracula's first victim, due to her proximity, and desire to remain hidden from the other crewmates. But somehow, Dracula is interrupted before he can drain her. Maybe by the dog, who barks and raises the alarm? But then the crew thinks the dog was just alerting them about the stowaway, not the monster. You could have had a whole scene where the captain promises the invented ship's doctor character about how he won't record her in the log, because maybe she has some troubled past she's escaping from. Then it's like an explanation as to why she isn't in the book, but it fits the story anyway. Some of the crewmates can blame her for the disappearances: whether it's bad luck because she's a lady, or maybe she is really a murderer, or maybe she's secretly working for Dracula! It all plays into the drama, and even the viewers don't know if she's working for Drac or not because she wasn't there in the novel.
The first mate should have been the one who vaguely knew the story of Dracula. Maybe he grew up just outside of Dracula's reach, but heard stories of village children going missing closer to the mountains. He's in denial at first: he's a skeptic, and he refuses to believe that this old wives' tale is actually responsible for something as serious as his actual crew's lives. But as the evidence becomes more and more clear that it really is Dracula, he doubts his sanity until, until! It's just him and the captain left. In his madness, he refuses to stay within the lantern light by the captain. Instead, he goes below deck and tears open the crates one by one. Dracula, sated with the blood of the rest of the crew, only smiles at him.
Here's where you get the real good shot of Dracula looking like a real nasty little bitch, all creepy and shit. You have only gotten glimpses so far, quick shots almost as though they're from the perspective of a crewmate getting hunted. But now, the first mate sees him, chin still blood-stained (maybe the last person Drac killed was the little boy and the body is missing, but the first mate walks into him sucking that son down like a capri sun) and the first mate comes out from below deck, hollering about true evil and throws himself off the side, just like in the book.
The captain refuses to go below deck, believing the first mate killed the others, including the boy, so he lashed himself to the wheel...until Drac comes for him too! He's out, awake constantly, through bitter night and blaring sun, so even he isn't sure when he finally sees Drac. But he does, and he records it. And just as he sees land, we get a nice gorey scene where Drac takes out the captain.
Cut to the ship landing at Whitby. At the very beginning of the movie, it started with the gathered townsfolk trying to explore the ship. For the last bits, maybe you get some scenes of them gathering together to see this weird ship (Mina and Lucy cameo???) But at the very end, all you get is the ships crashing near the docks (big gasp from the gathered townsfolk) and the dog jumps off and runs away. We end with a shot of this dog coming right at you as it jumps off the ship.
Anyway, I still have more critiques.
There were just too many people alive at the last bit. I think the tension builds when slowly you're left with 4, then 3, then 2, then only 1 person to man a full sized sailboat. Part of the horror is being alone at sea! Not just that people are dying, but you're being left without them in a perilous situation.
They also chose to show other people get infected with vampirism (which I don't like because you can't become a vampire unless you drink the blood of a vampire, but fine they can just change the rules. I don't like it but that's maybe a me problem.), and subsequently those bitten die when exposed to sunlight. So why didn't the crew just all nap on deck during the day (with shifts) and kept watch all together overnight? To me it's so obvious that it becomes a plot hole.

Finally caved and am watching narcos bc I have terminal disease and it’s called being embarrassingly horny for men with mustaches and dad bods and I HAAAATE how like perfectly tailored this show is for me. It’s like, overwrought writing? Check. Early 80s period piece? Check. Good cinnamontopography? Check. Pedro pascal sucking and fucking ? Check and check. Like I don’t want to be one of those horny for Pedro pascal girlies but I hate how easy I am. Like I am known for being a Miami vice and breaking bad and heat (1992) lover but this is just ridiculous.

It’s been almost three years since Ahmaud Arbery was chased, trapped and gunned down by three bigots with ties to local law enforcement over the offense of jogging while Black. Those homicidal racists have since been tried, convicted and shipped off to prison, likely for the rest of their lives.

But months after the last conviction for his actual murder, one person who played a pivotal role by using her elected office to help the killers initially evade accountability is just now starting the process of facing her own accountability. Jackie Johnson, who was district attorney for Georgia’s Brunswick Judicial Circuit when Arbery was killed, will finally be arraigned Dec. 29. She will have to face a judge and enter a plea to charges that she violated her oath of office and improperly interfered with the investigation of Arbery’s killing by instructing Gwynn County cops not to make an arrest in the case.

Arbery’s killers, Travis McMichael, who actually shot Arbery, his father, Greg, a former investigator for Johnson’s office and William “Roddie” Bryan, have all had their days in court. But the long delay for Johnson shows how race and privilege can continue to shield people tied to law enforcement from consequences for their actions, especially when the victims are unarmed Black men with relatively little wealth or connections.

Most people accused of crimes are typically arraigned within weeks, if not days. Waiting a year and a half—Johnson was indicted in September 2021—is unheard of, Georgia defense attorney Dwight Thomas told theAtlanta Journal-Constitution last week.
What happened to Arbery has largely been adjudicated; not even the men wasting away behind bars for his death dispute their roles, but from the very beginning it was clear that they thought their race and their connections to the criminal justice system—to Johnson in particular—conveyed immunity. Bryan actually recorded the chase and murder, saying in an interview later that he believed that the video would help clear them.

The judge in Johnson’s case, John “Robbie” Turner, hasn’t said publicly what the hold up is. He still has a month before Johnson has to stand in front of him, but at any time between now and then he could rule on her defense team’s motion to dismiss the case—which means there’s still a chance Johnson never faces accountability at all.

i never know how to answer a "favourite movie genre" question. i simply do not. wtach enough movies to be able to tell.. my favourite genre
#fern.txt#like i watch movies but they can be anything and i just watch them with one eye open and forget about them#so i always answer well fantasy ofc. i guess. because like. lotr is fantasy right?#and i just rewatch that#but then i fail to name any other fantasy movies i've seen and genuinely enjoyed#i'm not saying everything other than lotr is inherently bad but also that IS what i'm saying AND everything else is simply unmemorable to me#so then i consider what do i most enjoy anyway? other than movies. games ofc. so i still think fantasy is my favourite genre in General#but i could not name any movies#idk. i tend to watch period drama stuff sometimes. but i can’t say i Love everything i’ve seen?#honestly most of the time watching movies i’m unfamiliar with makes me weirdly uncomfortable#so then i end up Not watching new movies i haven't already seen#like i’m not supposed to be seeing them?? and i can’t find it in me to care about the plot/characters either#like i’ve only known you for an hour why should i care about your story#when i watch stuff i mostly just watch it for the general vibe/aesthetic/ambience now that i think about it#i like. cinnamontopography#i like music and nice scenery. camerawork#if those things are cozy to me i will watch the whole thing unaware it has a plot#hm#but apart from lotr i also rewatch pride and prejudice (2005). there is something more about the movie that i simply find comforting#and then i have seen rogue one 3 times which is not the same as rewatching it 20 times a year for comfort's sake#but still it means i loved the movie enough to see it more than once#i've only seen sw twice. it's........ a lot of movies. and i love them but not enough to rewatch them ya feel#but that's about it from me and my relationship with movies

You liked my Top 10 Favourite Anime OSTs, so I hope you'll enjoy my Top 10 Favourite Anime OPs and following that EDs.
I'll be weighing up the sakuga, animation quality, editing and even foreshadowing in the OPs, as I'll be swayed going by song alone. As I'll be looking at foreshadowing, there may be some spoilers, so skip if you don't want any. Mother’s Basement does all the analysis on a whole bunch of these OPs, way better than I ever could, so check him out!
I made all the gifs in this post!
Honourable Mentions for OPs that didn't make the cut!
Assassination Classroom - S2 OP4
"Bye Bye Yesterday"
Cowboy Bebop - S1 OP1
“Tank”
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure - Part 2 OP2
“Bloody Stream”
Kakegerui - S1 OP1
“Deal with the Devil”
Toilet Bound Hanako-kun - S1 OP1
“No.7”
And now on with the chosen ones!
10.
Teasing Master Takagi-san - S2 OP2
“Zero Centimetres - Yuiko Ohara”
If I don’t talk about this OP no one will! It’s not the most spectacular OP ever, but it doesn’t need to be. For an OP so soft, it’s hard hitting with the foreshadowing, such as the joke box Nishikata makes and the rubber Takagi lends him. I think this OP is so sweet, and I remember I used to get butterflies during that dance scene and that scene at the end where Takagi writes on Nishikata’s back. I don’t know the singer AT ALL, but her voice is so lilting and sweet! She really captured the essence of a childhood crush in 90 seconds. I can’t wait for S3!
Tumblr media
9. Demon Slayer - S2 OP2
“Zankyou Zanka - Aimer”
Demon Slayer is a simple shounen, and the OP fits that; there’s no grandiose foreshadowing to events that happen seasons from now, but god take a look at this stunning OP.
LOOK! AT! THE! FUCKING!! ANIMATION!!! THE MUSIC!!!! THE FORESHADOWING!!!!! This OP is CRAMMED with sakuga! My poor heart BROKE when I saw Rengoku’s hilt guard at the start. Poor Uzui’s backstory is hinted at, but they get you so hyped up for the upcoming action and BOY DID THEY DELIVER THIS SEASON! I want to kiss Aimer on the mouth for giving us such a good OP, I didn’t think LiSA could be matched.
Tumblr media
8. Kaguya-sama: Love is War? - S2 OP2
“DADDY ! DADDY ! DO ! - Masayuki Suzuki feat. Airi Suzuki”
AHHHHHHHHHHH I DIDN’T THINK THIS WOULD BE A FAVE BUT HERE IT IS! The music! The animation! The subtle details! Mwah mwah mwah! Brilliant! They fall in love with each other more every season! Their battle for love in the first season was fierce, unapologetic in its brutality, deadly! Here, it’s blossoming into something gentler, but not losing its intensity in the slightest. Also we get to see the side characters up to their antics at well, which is never a problem.
Btw this song is a MASTERPIECE, seeing the name of the song has you singing along already, I am dying to see what they do for S3.
Tumblr media
7. Ranking of Kings - S1 OP2
“Naked Hero - Vaundy”
I already did my analysis on this ahah! Wow, I didn’t think you could pack so much emotion and foreshadowing into an OP but boy was I wrong! You can feel the love pouring out of Hiling’s gaze, and the love that went into making this superb OP. I love Vaundy, and I was so ecstatic to see them doing the OP for one of my now favourite anime ever.
This OP will definitely have the same nostalgic effect in ten years, where you burst out singing as soon you hear it. There’s a few like that on this list too. Oh yeah, and this may be the only OP on here to make me cry upon its first viewing. I would love to give it a higher ranking — I would’ve based on Vaundy alone — it could easily sit in the Top 5 any day, but we’ll see how the season ends first :D.
Tumblr media
6. Attack on Titan - S1 OP1
“Feuerroter Pfeil und Bogen”
YEAAAAAAAAH!!! FIRST ANIME BABY!!! And I used to skip the OP WPEOSKDMSOEN. Still, this OP is utterly ICONIC!!! We all scream “JAEGER” at the top of our lungs, there’s no denying it.
The ~cinnamontopography~ 😩. The organised ranks of soldiers in almost blinding monochrome against the chaotic titans in splotchy neon colours. The way Annie, Mikasa and Eren move is so goddamn satisfying and beautiful to look at. That’s some REAAAAAL nice sakuga, straight from Studio Wit themselves. This OP was really the best first OP for a series like AOT, they knocked it outta the park!
Tumblr media
5. Nichijou - S1 OP1
“My Ordinary Life - Kataomoi”
If that zooming shot isn’t the coolest thing you’ve ever seen in your life shut up with your butt up. The OP is so funny and the song is such a FUCKING BOP!!! They instantly set you up for all the gags that might take place over the course of the show and let you know you’re in for the craziest “slice of life” you’ve ever seen. Get ready to dance your ass off when this comes on, I’m making sure your feet leave the floor!
Tumblr media
4. Neon Genesis Evangelion - S1 OP1
“A Cruel Angel’s Thesis”
ICONIC!!! GODDAMN ICONIC!!!! I love everything about how this OP looks and sounds. All that religious imagery and symbolism. Whatever could it be foreshadowing :0. Seeing flashes of the monstrous Eva 001 sends a thrill up your spine, and those frames of text let you know this ain’t your average mecha. I love those long sweeping shots, this anime really killed it with its editing. I’m glad the song is so iconic— it should be with such a sexy name. If you’re not singing along when you hear the lyrics, I’m gonna cause the third impact on your ass.
Tumblr media
3. Beastars - S1 OP1
“Wild Side - Ali”
The minute I saw stop motion I was hooked, there was no doubt this was going down as one of my favourite openings. I love the chase at the start, the foreshadowing of the fountain, the confusion between lust and hunger in Legoshi's mind, THAT BEAUTIFUL DANCE SCENE? I got butterflies for like the first 30 times I watched it over and over. The song is an absolute bop as well, I hope ALI keep making music for a long time to come.
Tumblr media
2. Mob Psycho 100 - S2 OP2
“99.9 - Mob Choir”
I nearly orgasmed every time I heard that damn bass riff at the start. Down bad for that bass. This OP is so creative visually, like it’s jaw dropping in the execution of all these different styles and mediums. That 3D spinning Lego animation at the start is fucking AWESOME! My favourite shot would be where all the layers that make up Mob separate and then hit him all at once, that shit gave me goosebumps. S2 went to new heights and the second OP definitely outdoes the first.
Tumblr media
1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - S1 OP1
“Again - Yui”
Anime fans are weeping knowing that something belonging to FMAB is in first place. It’s a good OP!!! It slapped me in the face with it’s foreshadowing and I failed to notice, smiling demurely like a fool!
It is a perfect OP, you hear this shit and you’re already singing. It’s such a beautiful OP as well, with plenty of sakuga, emotional beats and hype moments. Of course, every time you hear Yui start singing you just know things are gonna be good. Starting with the transmutation circle that started all this shit, and ending with Ed throwing his arm in the face (eye?) of GOD??! Wow, I implore you to check out Mother’s Basement for more in-depth analysis of this masterpiece of an OP.

Rewatching house 3 days after seeing it for the 1st time and things noticed//more thoughts on the themes of it etc. literally me examining it line by line like ugh i get it. the symbolism the cinnamontopography. also GOD all of this ended up being ONLY for part 1 hhhh i'll make a seperate post for the other parts actually:
"I see your father in you, it's a weakness" > explicitly by attempting to NOT be like his father/falling for his relative's peer pressure that causes him to do exactly what his dad did to him (neglect and leave his children worse off than they would've been otherwise)
Penny rights! I know this is a daddy problem's focused story but I do enjoy that while she falls quite easily into the deferential passive mother-figure she does have a bit more will to her than is first apparent. That she's the reason her kid's manage to escape the house/minimizes the consequences of the inevitable spiral of intergenerational trauma presented by the father (poverty to orphanhood is better than poverty to dying and being dead probably)
I think she's very interesting. Like she has some awareness of what isn't right but she still falls for it. (Sitting at the sewing machine after staying up all night- "i've got so much work to do" when before she'd work together with Mabel on chores / "Isobel don't touch that" subconscious awareness of its danger when it's related to her kids but not herself) I think her silence on everything that happens (several scenes where Raymond is a speaking agent and she's just silent beside him) is the most telling? Like very Feminine Mystique failure of women to be given the opportunity for identity outside of wifehood and maternal identity (this 2nd one being kind of secondary and idk how to describe how it ties into her complicitness in the neglect of her daughters but ehhhh) yeah obvs not something the narrative focuses on but regardless is does pervade the plotline implicitly....
but yeah anyway uhhh maybe something like her falling for the pretty lie, but still working within her own means to try and provide something real? tangible? because it was her curtains that helped them escape in the end. also her being the one who still had the sense to tell her kids to escape
Furniture as a motif in part 1 maybe? like it's also in the other two a bit but not used quite how it was in the 1st. the 2nd is more abt technology and the 3rd is more widely general w/ the whole repurposing things. but yeah part 1 uhhh
furniture that's passed down through generations, the dollhouse: things that connect you with your loved ones, all the furniture in the new house taking their places, being "designed by the architect" not as things with sentiment with history but as objects to own. Again parallels his relatives comments on the dresser thing, them only seeing it as a statement piece VS raymond "it was my father's" seeing the value of it as something more.
THE ROOM LITERALLY NAMED "WITHDRAWING ROOM" the room where they withdrew from themselves one another their children their previous lives values feelings. this movie makes me want to eat plaster. also it being "right across" from the dining room and the recurring themes of indulgence/desire/gluttony like why don't you shoot me in the head actually i would feel less deranged.
I feel like windows are a pretty interesting recurring motif thru the whole movie and not just part 1 but IDK the words for it
PT 1: relatives looking out the carriage window > architect through the carriage window > actor standing in the window before coming into the house
also the more obvious progresses from looking upward at the work on the new house thru the window // Mabel seeing their old house down below (in the dark of the night) > a room blocking the view (you're trapped now kids!) > the house getting destroyed (in the light of the day)
Also Penny specifically relating to this. Her theme of curtains- seeing the windows left bare so she'd have something to make busy with (prove her own value, the value of her work to make a home, which she ends up distracted from the moment she neglects her kids ofc and it becomes more the work to make beautiful, superficially). But also it again being her that allows them to escape out the window, they physically climb down her transformed body to escape.
The scene w/ raymond looking out the window as well! Something about the house contrasted at night VS in the daytime maybe? Windows are something that narrow your vision, only show you a limited perspective. But also the house at night is more dangerous kind of, because where would you be in the dark but at home? The night is where danger lurks (where raymond was first tempted) (but also like. the dark of the upstairs where the kids got lost, the metaphor is losing me but anyway)
Still thinking of light as a recurring metaphor, as desire, as something mesmerizing that can cloud your view // combined with it being easy to miss the reality of your situation if you fail to step back and look at it from a further perspective.
everyone standing in awe of the house but it's only Mabel who takes a moment to look away and see the actor hiding in the corner. Also her when they're in the house, everyone blinded by the house itself but only she sees all the other workers at play. Something something being blinded by what's in front of you you fail to see what's around you.

i havent seen detective pikachu but i am nonetheless firmly of the opinion that pokemon just doesnt work in live action. it needs to be animation. like theres just so much about pokemon that requires you to suspend your disbelief and animation meshes with that a lot better. could even be animation that leans towards realistic, sure, maybe 3d animation why not, but it has to be animation, all of it, if youre gonna depict battles. unless youre really going to go bananas with the cinnamontopography and actually do create something vivid and out there enough that it remains in that area where its unrealistic and thats okay. cause if i see some real looking animals being electrocuted and burnt i feel like thats just. uh. not it

I've always loved that Gollum is the one who technically destroys the ring, even if accidentally and even if it means destroying himself with it, there's something very poetic and tragic in it but that's a whole post on its own. I did however always find it a bit... anticlimactic that he basically just trips and falls in lol. I honestly really like the movie's change to having Frodo still fight him over it even with his finger bitten off. It's definitely more cinematic anyway
Also! Love that the first time we see Gollum actually stand at his full height is when he takes the ring back, and that shot we get through the ring.... cinnamontopography amirite
Also also! Notice how even as Gollum sinks he holds up his hand to protect the ring as long as possible 😭

Hey uh portrait of a lady on fire is... so good.... i keep thinking about it and like wow that cinnamontopography, the double whammy of love between two people of the same gender and those people being WOMEN, and the comparison of their ill-fated love to Orpheus and Eurydice only instead of dying it was separation because of Duty and like, would it not have been worse if Eurydice lived and both had to move on with life knowing that the other still walked the earth but they were unable to see each other or be together ever again?? And like the "maybe Eurydice was the one who said to Orpheus, 'turn around.'" in order to be the master of her fate in the only way she could???? By accepting the inevitable on her own terms with her head held high???? It's so RAW i CANNOT deal with it send tweet
