So I was drawn to my romance incense and I realised this reading had something to do with relationships. Just a bit of a warning this could be a bit triggering if you’ve dealt with toxic relationships.

Wonwoo pushes the tavern door open a little too hard. It hits the brick wall behind it, the sound erupting through the wasted and nearly wasted bodies that occupied the space. He doesn’t care, he needs a drink or many of them for that matter so he walks letting the door rattle obnoxiously behind him. The people eyeing him down like he just murdered their first born and not interrupted their nightly escapades.

He reaches the bar taking the worn out stool at the end and taps his fingers against the wooden counter. He was a regular and sadly had gotten used to the mustiness that was etched into the walls of the place and yet he still felt out of place.

“What does our royal guest of honor want tonight?” Mingyu rapped his fingers drumming in front of Wonwoo, grabbing his attention.

“Not royal, but bourbon please.”

Ever since he ran away from his Royal duties and somehow ended up in a tavern that existed harmoniously to bring two worlds together. Wonwoo had seen and witnessed things he had only grown up hearing during his mother’s bedtime stories. A secret language they shared when hidden behind the comfort of his bedroom. “As you wish your majesty.” Mingyu’s sarcastic drawl took him out of the spiral inside his head. He rolled his eyes obnoxiously as he watched Mingyu throw his head back in laughter, his fangs catching in the reflection of the dim light causing a chill to roll up his spine. “You’re so uptight tonight, relax a little Prince Charming.” He winked at Wonwoo before turning around and walking away from him.

No matter how hard he tried to leave the life he had behind, everyone here in this tavern that belonged neither here nor there, loved to remind him that he still had the king’s royal blood coursing through his veins. Usually, he didn’t mind, sometimes he would play into the character when he was drunk enough to earn a few laughs. But tonight on the final night of October, he didn’t want to be reminded of his true identity.

On Hallows Eve, three years ago his life had gone south. He was set to marry a princess from a neighboring kingdom and he couldn’t wait to meet her during the annual ball. He had woken up that morning with a jolt and skipped a step as he made his way to his mother and father’s private chamber. When he arrived, his heart, in his throat. He found his father the charming King beloved by his people with his hands around his mother’s throat and a murderous glimmer behind his soft eyes while she slowly turned a rough shade of blue.

Wonwoo felt his world crash onto the ground. his father didn’t stop no matter how hard he pleaded for him too. His tears fell onto the palace grounds creating tsunami’s as he witnessed his mother take her last breath.

He ran, ran to where his feet could carry him. Packed up anything that could fit in the tiny knapsack he used whenever he went to explore the forest behind the palace. And left, leaving behind the life he had only ever known.

He traveled for three days on foot without food nor rest, before he came across the tavern that smelled more like rotten feet than whiskey. He met Mingyu, who had recognized him right away and gave him the tavern’s royal treatment. Food, water and the rickety old room just above the tavern.

“It’s not satin or velvet or whatever you guys use over there, but it’s enough for you to sleep. Just pay me back by working here every odd day of the week.” Mingyu said, clapping his shoulder and leaving him behind to deal with his new reality.

That night was the night he was able to mourn his mother’s death and his own one as well. The king had come out publicly with fake tears in his eyes to say that his wife and his second born son had fallen ill to an illness and that when the royal physicians realized it, it had been too late. Though, everyone in the tavern knew the truth and he found comfort knowing that they hated the king just as much as he did.

“Penny for your thoughts my prince.” The angelic voice he had grown to love so much took him out of his thoughts. He lived in his head too much and he was thankful he had you —a witch he had met during one of his shifts over a year ago, to ground him back down onto Earth.

“Don’t call me that.” He smiled and grabbed hold of your hand and brought it up to his lips. He kissed it lightly keeping his eyes on yours as they burned holes of fire into them. You tensed up feeling the heat run up your body. It was laughable. You, a witch who could make anyone succumb and fall at her feet, was letting a runway prince pursue her and turn her into mush at his feet.

“You liked it when I said in bed once.”

“That was one time, princess.” He winked, enjoying the way your cheeks flushed. Your body reacted amorously to him and each time it bubbled an emotion deep inside of him that he wasn’t sure what it was. It scared him and excited him all at the same time.

Wonwoo stopped believing in love three years ago but every time you were nearby. He believed that he could again.

“One to many times Wonwoo.” You toyed as you took the empty seat next to him. Your hand still entrapped in his and you weren’t planning on letting go any time soon.

Mingyu rolled his eyes and placed Wonwoo’s drink in front of him, “Wonwoo has a prince kink?.” He mumbled his voice laced with disgust. “I should’ve known.” and leaned against the wooden table, shooting daggers at Wonwoo.

“Not a kink if that’s what he is Gyu.”

Wonwoo didn’t care that he still had royal blood in him, because whenever he found himself laughing at Mingyu’s poor attempts to flirt with nymphs. Or your presence next to him he forgot that he did. He wondered if his mother had led him here to this repulsive tavern in order to meet the two of you.

Although Wonwoo knew you were perfectly capable at defending yourself. He loved walking you home.

The two of you trailed down the dirt path hand in hand; chasing the blue light of the moon. Comfortable silence erupting between your bodies. Wonwoo never felt more at home then now.

“So what’s a witch like you doing with a commoner like me on Hallow’s Eve.” Wonwoo glanced at you his eyes sparkling like they held a million galaxies and you found yourself wanting to get lost in them. “Don’t you have rituals or cards to read, aren’t you the most powerful underneath a blue moon.” He edged on making you smile.

“Are you saying you want your cards read again?” You bumped your shoulder against his. His grip on your hand falters making you giggle.

Wonwoo’s eyes grew wider than the moon as he remembered the night you read his cards to him for the first time a few weeks ago and he blushed. “Last time you read my cards I ended tied up.”

“Well that’s cause you picked my sex deck Wonwoo, we’ve been over this.” You stopped walking and leaned up to kiss his cheek, leaving a plum lipstick mark behind. “Don’t act like you didn’t like it.” You whispered in his ear.

Wonwoo swallowed hard at your taunting tone. He knew you were right and he hated it. If you had asked him with that infamous bat of your eyelashes he would’ve done it again. “For once angel I want to see you tied up.” He blurted out, his cheeks turning a rough shade of red as he processed what he had said after he had said.

“Okay, but you’re going to have to catch me first.”

“Catch you, what a—.”

Before Wonwoo could finish his sentence you took off running. Wonwoo threw his head back in disbelief, his body coursing with exhaustion for a brief second before he took off as well. This is what he loved most, the adrenaline rush you brought to him. Although sometimes he thought you were too much he wouldn’t trade the moments he spent with you for anything in the world. Not even for his mother’s life and you had offered a few times, but he refused because with you he felt complete.

Your laughter rang through the howling branches of the trees surrounding the two of you. Wonwoo’s body felt like it was floating as he chased after you, the cool night air hitting his face as he ran with everything in him. It reminded him of the times he spent at the palace gardens chasing after his older brother, his mother’s voice ringing in his ears as she joined in halfway. It was these moments where he was the most carefree, that reminded him of his mother. That made him miss her with everything in his being. It was moments like these where the anger and resentment towards his father would surface and he wished he hadn’t had run away that day. But this was different because for the first time in his life he was running towards someone, a goal.

“Maybe you don’t want it enough Wonwoo. Are you even trying?” You teased, he could tell he was close from how loud your voice sounded. It only gave him motivation to run faster, so he did.

You faded into view, it felt like he was seeing you for the first time in his life. You were leaning against a tree, arms cockily crossed in front of you, waiting. He let his feet carry him like the wind around him and soon he was crashing into you like an ocean wave. You laughed silently. The impact, knocking the air out of your lungs making you feel lighter than a cloud.

Almost as if by instinct Wonwoo’s arms found their way around your body, his face morphing into one of concern. He didn’t mean to crash into you as hard as he did or at all, but sometimes when he was with you his body acted as if it were unattached to his brain. “I’m sorry are you okay?” He placed his fingers underneath your chin lifting your head up so your watery eyes locked with his.

You planted your hands on his chest, balling your fist wrinkling his starch white button down and nodded. “With-- y-you I’m always okay.” You gasped and closed the distance. Your lips were on his faster than he could blink and he felt himself melt.

In fairytales silver and water were a witches ' kryptonite. In this life you were Wonwoo’s.

Wonwoo didn’t win but he should’ve known you were going to give in to his desires. Despite your sneaky ways he knew he could always trust you but still it had caught him off guard when you had given him the onyx ropes upon entering your small cottage.

“You wanted to tie me up right? Now’s your chance.” The amount of trust that laid behind your eyes was overwhelming. And no one, not even his mother, had trusted him like you did.

He placed the ropes down on your old wooden bed and kissed you with everything in him.

When his mother would tell him the damsel in distress stories during bed time. She always described the ending kiss as if it were the most magical thing in the universe, with fireworks exploding and butterflies running mayhem in pits of stomachs. But you weren’t a damsel in distress and his mother’s description of a true love’s kiss didn’t do this kiss justice.

Wonwoo very much felt like he was thrown in the middle of space and was now dumbly floating around. His body felt lighter than air, but heavy at the same time. He didn’t feel fireworks nor the butterflies but he did feel the adrenaline dip in the mouth of his stomach and the strikes of lightning that raced through his veins. He felt brand new, and he was ready to give himself to you, just like he had many nights before but this time it felt different, important and special.

Maybe Wonwoo was finally releasing the lock he had around his heart, but if he didn’t know any better--and he didn’t. He was positive that what he was feeling for you in this moment of vulnerability was love.

“I want to take my time.” He whispered against your lips as your fingers toyed with the buttons of his shirt. “I want to be with you forever but I don’t know how.” He crushed the hem of your silk black shirt between his fingers. Your hands stopped their movements and you pulled away. They wandered up to his cheek, your index finger playing with the tiny sunspots that only you were able to see. He looked so small and scared and you were sure you mirrored his same expression because the grip he had on your shirt got tighter.

To your surprise he was the prince and he had spilled two strawberry margaritas on you ruining your new favorite shirt. You cursed him out, wondering why he wasn’t deader than dead as he apologized. He dropped everything before taking your hand in his and leading you up the rickety old stairs that led to the room above. Without a word he tore his poor excuse of a room apart until he found you a clean shirt and you put it on not after pushing him out of the room for some privacy.

If you had known that you would still keep that same shirt hidden deep in your closet you would’ve laughed because that was the first night you started to fall for him and every passing moment you were with him felt like you were being reborn again. Like a part of you didn’t die behind the flames of the burning fire as you watched your lover yell out for his life. That memory was buried deep in your mind and you had never told Wonwoo in fear that he would look at you differently. Like you weren’t his lifeline anymore, so, you kept it locked away inside of your heart just like the love you felt for him. One day you would tell him just not tonight. “Take your time but tonight make me yours please.”

Wonwoo didn’t tie the ropes hard enough and it made you laugh at his shaking hands as they traveled down your flushed out body. You had assured him that you had suffered through worse than the burning of ropes against your skin. But he paid no attention to your statement as he finished his second and final loop on your bedpost.

“Okay well for days I’ve been seeing peonies pop up randomly around this place and I just thought it was a coincidence. When I drew my card this morning, The Empress was surrounded by peonies, but I really didn’t think anything of it. When I entered the tavern last night there were peonies in the flowerbed growing. And now that I think about it they were there too the night I met you.”

“What are you saying, that my mom is here somehow?” His voice was filled with hope and you tried hard not to cringe at the sound. The thought had crossed your mind a few times but you always had to remember that even though the supernatural existed peacefully in this world. That rule didn’t apply to the dead, they had strict rules on their side of the realm. If his mom was making an attempt to contact him he was sacrificing her chances at reincarnation.

“I’m saying that maybe your mom didn’t tell you who she really was.”

“Are you saying she was a witch like you?”

As soon as the words left his mouth, he felt comfort. Everything about his childhood made sense. The random peonies that would appear in the garden during the mid of winter. The stories that didn’t feel like stories but more like memories. And her sudden death. He wasn’t sure if his father had known or if he had found out that morning, but whatever the case was he was positive that she had sent you to him. His greatest and last gift to him from her and had never felt more at peace.

Can you go into how you think Dios insane and how his mind works. I have trouble putting my thoughts into words but reading other people's opinions helps and not a lot of people talk about dios insanity even tho i find it very interesting

Sure thing!!! You know I love to talk about DIO lmao(NOTE: This will include spoilers for Stone Ocean later on)

In part 1, human Dio’s goal appears to be proving a point to his dead father as well as himself. He always wants more, to achieve more, to prove he’s capable of more. He does that by pursuing superiority in many fields; he proves academic excellence by finishing law school at the top of his class, he proves he’s a talented sportsman by being one of his school’s star rugby players, and he actively, since the moment he joined the Joestar family, wants to prove that he’s superior to Jonathan and therefore a better heir and a better son.

It’s also important to mention the flaws he sees in himself here; his anger. I went into this before here but to summarize it; Dio has an anger problem and he not only knows it - it’s his most despised thing about himself. 

That’s all simple stuff at the start, as it’s just trying to prove he’s better than others, and that’s easy to understand.

Then he becomes a vampire and a power trip REALLY hits him. Now he doesn’t have to pretend that he’s a gentleman anymore because literally no one can do shit to him. That law he studied? Fuck that, he can break it now all he wants, because it doesn’t apply to him anymore. The law is written for mere humans, and he’s not one of them anymore. He can do whatever he wants and he will do that - as flamboyantly and dramatically as possible. The Joestar fortune he was after in his earlier days? Fuck that too, he’s an immortal vampire with superpowers now, he can just take whatever money he wants.

Now Dio is free to be himself in every sense, and he stops pursuing power in a sneaky, deceitful way, but just. Straight up terrorizing anyone who steps in his path. Now EVERYONE gets to know about his wish for power, not just Jonathan.

And what’s even better - NO ONE is a problem anymore. NO ONE can hurt him. You know what this means for Dio? That he doesn’t have to get angry and frustrated anymore, because no one is able to push him that far.

….Except for Jonathan Joestar, who just won’t leave him alone

Jonathan keeps coming back and it low key pisses Dio off, but on the other hand, he also has major respect for him because of that. In his life of power and bliss, Jonathan manages to be the ONLY thing to disturb him

So Phantom Blood ending happens, Dio is bodyless, and in a mixture of necessity and respect, he takes Jonathan’s body. I notice people often seem to think that he took his body because he wanted it from the get go or something, but that’s not accurate. Initially it was for revenge, because Jonathan was the one who caused him to have to behead himself, and in SDC DIO even clearly says he NEEDED to take that body in order to survive - it was originally revenge and survivalism, but seeing Jonathan’s final actions also added immense respect to that. That body means a lot of different things to DIO.

Anyway now we get to the good part.So Dio is underwater all alone with a corpse for about 100 years. I went into more into this once before but to TL;DR that post; that kind of situation Does Bad Shit To You.

By the time DIO arose from that coffin, the insanity REALLY took hold of him. Because, in that coffin, he got to THINK. He got to do a LOT of thinking. All alone. He got to think about what matters to him.

And once he did all that thinking, he found his goal.It was not riches or power, but lack of anger: Inner peace.

Throughout SDC and Stone Ocean, that’s his ultimate goal.Now, how he goes about to obtain that is… hm.

In Stone Ocean, we are introduced to DIO’s diary, in which he essentially wrote down a highly complex, highly convoluted ritual of obtaining peace of mind, or as he likes to call it like the dramatic bitch that he is: Heaven.

I’ve seen people say that he apparently doesn’t show any philosophical interest in that kinda thing in SDC to which I say, do you even pay attention?

Think about DIO throughout SDC - what do we actually see him do before the final battle? He’s reading, he’s studying, he’s relaxing, he DOESN’T WANT TO BE BOTHERED.

He isn’t even the one sending out his assassins at first - the Tarot enemies are all Enya’s employees, she dragged those homicidal maniacs together. It’s only after all of them are defeated that DIO sends out HIS followers, the Glory Gods.

DIO wants his minions to take care of this because it’s low key stressing him out and he Doesn’t Need This Shit Right Now. He’s SO CLOSE to doing his ritual, Pucci is waiting for himin America, they have PLANS, and now these Joestar bastards are in Egypt?? What the fuck??? Can they like, not??? Is there any respect left for the ‘Do Not Disturb’ signs you hang on the door handles??

Basically, SDC catches DIO at a really bad time because he’s just in the middle of something big and it all just comes in to crash his plans, but there’s a lot about him that can be discerned from the final battle, and that is one of my favourite aspects of him, which is also very closely tied to his idea of Heaven; KNOWLEDGE.

DIO was really REALLY confident at the start of the battle, because he was convinced he had more knowledge about the Joestar group than they did about him, and knowledge was supposed to be his greatest weapon.

You can tell how paranoid and stressed out he becomes once Jotaro breaks that idea of him Knowing More and starts moving in stopped time. One of my favourite scenes in the final battle has got to be the ‘Is Jotaro Really Dead?’ scene, in which DIO acts like a paranoid wild animal, he acts like a cat who has his sights on something, but is not 100% sure if it’s safe to come close.

This paranoia is a HUGE factor of why he wants Heaven, aka Peace of Mind, and he is fully aware that he has this issue.

Another one of my favourite moments happens to revolve around his paranoia, that being the moment in Stone Ocean which shows us that it’s preventing him from fully trusting even those who are the most devoted to him, such as Pucci;

What we’re looking at here is DIO speaking to someone who is essentially the closest thing he EVER had to a friend, someone he admits he feels truly relaxed with, and yet even with this man he’s unable to shake off the paranoia he feels.

DIO really doesn’t know true inner peace, even in a situation that he himself described as being one that’s making him feel at ease.

Now we finally get into some bigger Stone Ocean spoilers regarding the stand of the main enemy of that part, Pucci - the same stand that DIO tried to obtain.

Here’s basically what the ritual-obtained stand, Made in Heaven, does;

It speeds up the time of entire universe to bring it back to a point where it started the spin, with everyone still alive just as they were (except the people who the stand user kills), but this time everyone has a vague idea/knowledge of what will happen next, because everyone essentially witnessed the future.

Now, assuming that DIO’s Made in Heaven would do the same thing as Pucci’s did, here’s what this tells us about DIO:

He is SO PARANOID that the thing that gives him the most anxiety and unrest, the thing he wants to get rid of, is the same that all of us take for granted:Not knowing what will happen next.

DIO wants to obtain peace of mind by getting rid of that ‘problem’ of an unknown future and making EVERYONE know what’s inevitably coming next, but he’d be the only one who would be able to change it. That’s his ideal world.

DIO’s insanity was born from his wish to achieve peace of mind.He wants to get rid of his anger and paranoia, but his idea of the solution to those feelings is absolutely demented and unfathomably convoluted.

...a month late... A birthday year ahead reading for Kim Taehyung... Featuring a startling revelation?! ... Sir Taehyung???

Sometimes you do a reading and something arises that you didn't even ask for and never expected... But we'll get to that.

In terms of advice for this year for Tae, with the reversed ace of cups and reversed 4 of earth (pentacles) coming as significators of this reading, there's a real message of needing to unblock and release certain energies, situations, attitudes... Imagine a clod of earth blocking a water pipe and the pressure is building up behind it. Eventually something has to give, and it should be that clod of earth... Not the pipe.

Reversals for me generally indicate blockages in areas of a person's life. With an ace of cups in reverse and a four of pentacles in reverse, I'm feeling a blockage in emotional connection or at least in being able to express one's emotions with ease... Which maybe leads to compensating with shows of material wealth... Over spending... Overgenerosity... This is interesting because I think Tae seems to express his feelings and affection for his friends and family pretty well... At least from what we see... But these cards are indicating to me that he struggles a lot with this actually and that he tends to bottle things up until he explodes (like my blocked pipe analogy) or tries to express feelings through ostentatious gifts or compensates for not expressing his emotions healthily by overspending... Essentially the advice is to unblock these energies... To learn earn to release and express his emotions in a healthy way.

Going into the more specific advice cards for the year ahead, we're starting off on an extremely positive note with The Star and the reversed 3 of water (cups). I see with this that there's real potential this year for Tae to fulfill a dream or desire. Something he wants for himself. A personal goal or project that he works on alone. With the 6 of wands and King of Earth (pentacles) we can see that pursuing this will bring him a lot of praise and success as well as greater wealth and stability. This could be anything from a solo music project, to another acting job... I'm not sure exactly what it is other than it's a real wish he has and wants to do it for himself. The advice here is simple; go for it, it will be successful.

At the centre of this reading we have the reversed Sun and the 2 of water (cups). Even reversed, the Sun is still such a positive card... It's just the energy is blocked, delayed... What I'm getting from this is that there is actually a love connection manifesting for Tae in the future which will bring him a lot of happiness... But for now he's going to need to be patient because the timing isn't right. It's coming... Just not quite yet... Though not in the too distant future... Maybe even next year?... It depends on what happens between then and now of course... But i do see happiness in a relationship ... It's just the energy is blocked so it won't manifest for a bit. If he can learn to open himself up and express his emotions this will help bring any desires he has for love into fruition...

For now though he has to work on himself. With the High Priestess and Strength here I'm seeing, and feeling, a powerful development of spirituality... Honestly it was visceral. I think it's highly likely that this year Tae may begin to explore and develop his spirituality more seriously... Certainly there's some deepening and strengthening of spiritual beliefs going on here. His faith in his intuition, in the advice coming from his spiritual guides, will become stronger. As he listens to his guides and gets confirmation over and over his faith is continuously going to deepen, as is his wisdom and understanding of the world.

The last two tarot cards of advice for the year ahead are the 2 of wands and reversed 7 of water (cups). What I see here is the advice to not be afraid to consider his options and step outside the box. He has so many talents and so many opportunities to use his skills and gifts... He's being advised to look at them all... Give them all some thought... And not feel like he has to stick to one certain thing or path when he has so many roads he can walk before him.

Now, for the oracle cards, I got first Winter Solstice: Reflection. Honestly this card made me start humming Singularity, which was interesting (the lyrics make so much sense in this case) ... I feel again a sense of needing to release something. In this case, I get the message of needing to reflect on the past, on all things that have happened, good and bad, lessons learnt and how much he's grown up and matured... And release that which is holding him back from moving forward. The negative emotions and fears which keep him bottling up his feelings and being so wary of opening up to others... This is an interesting one of course because Tae is in a position where there is a legit rational argument for why he should be guarded and wary of new people... But at the same time, you can be sensible without locking your heart away entirely and living with a lot of fear and worry about your connections with others isn't healthy... There has to be balance. Basically... I think this card is telling him to reflect on himself and realise how far he's come and how much stronger and wiser he is now... He can trust himself and his intuition.

Okay... And now this is the card that gave me chills in this reading... This deck is called 'Angels and Ancestors' and I thought it was a particularly good deck to use for Tae because... Idk if I've mentioned it before but, wow, he has such strong ancestral energy surrounding him. His family probably don't play with paying respect to the ancestors because there's really such a strong link there...

Anyway, for his advice for this year I got the Knight card which says 'Be brave and honest'. However, more than just a message of advice for the year I got two distinct impressions that literally gave me chills and goosebumps... First that one of the main ancestors or spirit guides that's looking out for Tae right now was a Knight... Or the Korean equivalent thereof... A noble warrior with a sworn sacred code of morality... And second, that Tae himself, in a past life, was a Knight... (?! When I tell you i was shook!)... Not only that, but, and I kid you not, I heard French in a man's voice (I don't even speak French!!!) saying something like "Mon coeur... Lion..."?... I couldn't understand or make it all out but I recognised those words so they stuck with me. As did the impression that they were part of some kind of personal motto or vow... My heart like a lion...? Honestly I was just stunned at that point... I wasn't expecting to be told anything like this and if there is one thing here I'd like to tell Tae most it's this... This was a lot and unexpected and also... Really quite personal... So I didn't want to pry into it or ask more... I can only say, in terms of advice, I feel like knowing this and coming into that noble warrior, brave, chivalrous energy would bring him a lot of strength and comfort.

Finally... After that surprise... The angel oracle card for his year ahead was Fiona. This card says: Now that you've asked the angels for help, be open to receiving divine guidance and assistance. You deserve heaven's help!

This definitely resonates with the message of his developing spiritual beliefs and opening up to his guides and i think he's definitely already on the right path in this regard. Once he's open to listening to his guides, his angels, his ancestors... They'll lead him to wherever he needs to go and protect him from harm.

The numerology of this reading comes to 11; a number in numerology which speaks to high vibrational spirituality and receiving guidance from angels and spirit guides. Once again I'm struck by the message that this is a year of spiritual exploration for Tae.

I think this has the potential to be an amazing year of success for Tae, both materially in terms of his career and spiritually as he develops his intuitive gifts and strengthens his connection to his guides. My Spirituality

    What is my spirituality? What is my religion? What are my beliefs? All of these are questions I have no short answer to. I adhere to no one religion, no one system of belief, but I am not sure I am entirely atheist. My beliefs are very different from many people, but not so strange that nobody can understand them. My spirituality is different, but not so totally out there that it scares people. So, then, what are my beliefs?

    I believe in science, that we are a product of luck and evolution. We were not snapped into existence by one all-powerful being, but slowly refined by nature and adaptation. We are a miracle of nature, nothing more. However, there are some things that I will admit that science can’t explain. There are some things that just… are. Some of these things are runes, tarot cards, reiki, other energy healings, the metaphysical world in its entirety. That feeling when you sit inside a church or have a revelation about life, there had to be something to all of that. I don’t think it’s God, but there is something at play there that is larger than ourselves. Even when my scepticisms comes into play, there are always things like that, things that science can’t explain, things that just are. 

    And that’s okay, because that mystery is what makes it so enchanting.

    This is where what I believe comes into play. I believe that we are here for one purpose and one purpose alone; to learn. We are here to better ourselves in as many ways as possible. We are here to spend our whole lives striving to be better than the person we were yesterday. I believe that religion is only there to gently encourage us to do that on our own, to cradle us when we fall and keep encouraging us to stand back up and keep pushing. Religion os there, not to scare us into being good people, but to help facilitate it. We all think of some God or greater being sitting somewhere judging us, deciding if we have been good enough people to have a good afterlife or a lucky reincarnation, but I think differently. What I think is that if there is that greater being somewhere, their job isn’t to test us or fix our problems for us, but to help us do it on our own. 

    Christianity, for example. Heaven and Hell. An afterlife that is described to scare you into being good. The general consensus it that there is a man sitting in the sky that can say that if he doesn’t like what you were like in life he can send you somewhere for eternal torment. I think they are wrong. Supposedly, we are supposed to be his children, he wouldn’t do that to us. No, I think his job is to encourage us to place that judgement on ourselves, so that when we finally kick the bucket we can say we are happy with the lives we decided to live. We choose our own damnation. If we feel we were horrible people when we are stripped of our pride to reflect, then we will send ourselves to a hell of our own making.

    But that would still be here on Earth. Truth be told, I don’t know what I think will happen when I die. I don’t know if I’ll go to Heaven, Hell, get reincarnated, be a ghost, or lord knows what else, and frankly, I don’t care to speculate. What I do know is that we control our own minds. In our heads, we can create our own Heaven or Hell based upon how we view ourselves. That is our penance for our sins near the end of our life.

    I believe that while there are things in this world we will never explain, our gods exist within ourselves. we are our own god. we control our minds, our fates, have a great impression on our situation, and I believe that we make errors in life because most of us don’t have the control required to handle such power. We must find the balance, the yin and yang, for if we fail to balance the use of that power, we will use it improperly, and it will destroy us. 

    If we use that power to judge ourselves based on our own improvements, goals, and actions, without including external pieces, then we can begin to truly fulfill our purpose, to learn and grow as human beings. Instead of comparing ourselves to each other, we should compare ourselves to the people we were a year ago. We don’t look at our appearance, or our situation, but our lives. ask questions like; How do I treat others? How do I treat myself? Am I healthy in mind, soul, and body? Do I pursue my goals? Do I fix my own problems? Am I able to stand up when I get knocked down?

    We as a society judge ourselves in all the wrong ways. And we never judge our own characters. That is why we never grow to be any better, because we strive to solve singular problems, not our own misgivings. 

    I think that my practice of religion is to try and better myself every day I get the opportunity. 

    That is my spirituality, and those are my beliefs.

Devotions

If you’ve been following me for a while, you may know that for a very long time I identified as a secular hearth witch, fiercely defending a witch’s ability to practice authentically without a spiritual or religious framework. I still believe that with every bit of my soul, but about 6 months ago I made contact with a deity -- I can hardly remember whether she contacted me or I contacted her, to be honest. I suppose I initiated communication via a tarot spread, but I’m still not sure what made me think I should do the reading in the first place. In any case, she was there, waiting for me. And she kept waiting, as I tried to convince myself and my coven that it was just my subconscious, telling me to connect with my deeper self. And then as I tried to tell myself I was using archetypes to give expression to something I had struggled with. And then finally, she was there waiting when I came to know her as a real, unique individual with a consciousness, with wants and needs, and expectations. 

I was afraid to know her like this. I was skeptical, and I was shy, and I doubted my belief. I told my partner that I was meditating on the concept of this deity -- I did not tell her I was working with her as a real and autonomous being. I told myself I was making things up because I wanted to believe in something bigger than myself. Oh, I still read everything I could get my hands on. I began to notice and talk to corvids (my area has always hosted a multiplicity of crow hordes), and I began to find black feathers left in my path -- when I had never found one despite years of coexisting with these incredible birds. I even began to seek out and use guided meditations to communicate with this goddess. But I still found myself reluctant to truly believe. 

“My” goddess’ nature, as I understood it -- what I now believe to be her direct instructions, though I was, as I said, reluctant to frame it that way to myself-- got me into therapy for the first time in years. I began to understand my childhood experiences as trauma, and have been able to begin to address them and dismantle their continued impact on my life (I do not pretend that I will ever be completely healed from my trauma, but my therapist has helped me to stop the continual re-traumatization). I began to see myself as strong, as a survivor, rather than someone who is broken and inherently flawed. I do not know what her end goal is, but I am able to recognize that this is for my own benefit as well as a process to shape me into her tool to do her work. 

For a while I lit candles for her on my altar regularly. Then I began to drop off. I got busy with other things. I struggled with renewed depression. I began to doubt again that she was real, that she wasn’t just a figment of my imagination, that I wasn’t just a little crazy to believe a goddess was talking to me. I did tarot spread after tarot spread to check if I was “on the right path.” I let my doubt consume me. I let it divert me from continuing to build a relationship with the being who had done more for my mental health than I had done of my own accord in years. I began to seek out relationships with other deities, thinking perhaps I would find more evidence for their existence than I thought I had for hers. Despite the fact that every experience I had with her could be correlated with an experience that at least one other person on the internet (and usually several) had shared -- despite the fact that I had literally experienced her speaking to me -- despite the clear benefits I gained from a relationship with her. I doubted. 

Two nights ago, as I was in that grey area between sleep and waking, I felt a calling from the tarot cards that I use to communicate with her. When I came home from work yesterday, I did a three card draw just to get a general vibe. I got the page of coins, the six of wands, and the page of swords. Then I did a 6 card deity communication spread, in case I was channeling some sort of message from her -- and the first three cards were the page of swords, the six of wands, and the page of coins, all reversed. Upon discussing this with my dear coven members, who first laughed at me (I’m looking at you @madamehearthwitch) and then let me bounce interpretation ideas around with them, it was suggested that I try a celtic cross 10 card spread. I had never done one before, but it seemed like a good way to get to the bottom of whatever was going on. 

I won’t go into details, both because it would be long and because it’s fairly personal, but let’s just say that the Queen of Swords made an appearance, and though the page of coins, six of wands, and page of swords did not, the message was the same. I’m still here. I’m still waiting. But you have to do the work. 

This is your battle. Armor up. 

So this is me, doing the work. I am making a public(ish) declaration that I am indeed a polytheist -- a ‘hard’ polytheist, if you care to make those distinctions. I believe the gods are alive and autonomous beings that are here with us. That they can change our lives, often for the better, if we choose to cooperate. I do not believe they are all-benevolent for that would suggest that their sole focus is the well-being of humans and I do not believe that to be true. I believe they have needs and wants and plans that we can be a part of, but that we have to expect to do some hard work. It’s not all songs and incense and drinking wine. It’s not all blessings and white magic. But I do believe that good things are in store. I do believe I better get my ass in gear. This is me, armoring up. 

The nitty gritty: 

I am going to start small, to build habits I can maintain.

I hereby commit to 7 consecutive days of devotions at my altar. If I miss a day, I start over. 

I also commit to a Samhain offering and full ritual.

Finally, I have decided to stop pursuing relationships with other deities for the time being. Not because she has asked me to, not because I don’t think I can maintain relationships with multiple deities at once, but because, as my dear friend pointed out, I have been using them as distractions from doing the work for her when it started to get hard. I will still offer thanks and small offerings to other deities when appropriate, but I am not actively pursuing an ongoing working relationship. I am going. To do. The work. For her.

January: The Hermit

At the beginning of the New Year, the cards want you to reflect on 2017.  Think about the highs and lows everywhere throughout the year. Think of how you got to this point you are at now.  During this month, it’s very important to spend time alone to work on yourself. Meditation, counselling, studying, and self-love are necessary at this time.  Leave behind the boring past, and think about how to put into action what you really want to do at this time.

February: Page of Wands (reversed)

The Pages are the messengers of the tarot.  This one in particular just doesn’t seem to be ready yet to move forward.  He fears change and making decisions, which can tie into our previous month with the desire to put plans into action.  If at this time you find yourself not knowing if what you were thinking of is really what you want, then return to The Hermit in your journey and continue your self-reflection.  It’s okay for there to be a delay, change will not happen overnight unless you make it so.  

March: Seven of Swords (reversed)

Sevens signal challenges and road blocks you must overcome to achieve your goals.  It’s very possible at this time you’ve moved away from your fears and now are struck with other problems.  In this case, it represents you’ve realized what you’re doing simply won’t work.  Maybe, however, this is something you had previously anticipated in February and you had a backup plan to ease your worries, but the plan was not thought through up to this point.  If you want to achieve the goal you have set, you must fully commit to it.  Don’t listen to the advice of others however, do in your mind what you think is right.

April: Strength

Your own inner strength is going to be key to you in April.  It will be put to the test at this time.  Feel the fear of whatever situation comes.  Analyze it.  Know that you have the inner strength to defeat the fear and push forward.  You may find others relying on you for strength at this time as well, and you have great power at your disposal to be of help to them.  However, like in January, keep in mind that you must help yourself along the way as well (and clearly you’re strong enough to do this)!

May: Three of Wands

Threes in tarot represent growth and development.  You’ve made progress at this time!  Make sure you give yourself a little pat on the back and reward yourself.  Now, with wands, this three means you’re moving around in some way.  Perhaps you’re travelling somewhere you’ve always wanted to go, or moving to a new place. There’s a sense of adventure present. If you’re trying to break away from some troubling time, this card is a green light to you.  It represents that you’re indeed moving forward and getting away from the pain from the past!

June: The Lovers (reversed)

Though you were moving forward quickly in May, it seems that in June things may be put on hold again. It may be time to stop moving forward and once again reflect on the past and how far you’ve come.  Communication problems are highlighted when The Lovers reverses.  If you’re in a relationship, then it’s very prevalent here.  It’s possible that during this time you’ll lack self-love and self-esteem, which causes problems not only with you but with your partner. Remember that for someone else to love you, you must first be in love with yourself.  

Another possibility is that during this time, a secret admirer may be finding it hard to confess their feelings towards you.  Try and take a look at the bigger picture regardless of the situation, see if anyone catches your eye (or if you’ve already caught theirs).  

July: Wheel of Fortune

Interestingly enough, this is nearly the halfway point in The Fool’s journey through the cards, and this is a little past the halfway point of your year.  This card points to a positive change in circumstances around you at this time.  After the ups and downs between May and June, it seems as though you’re once again moving forward at full speed.  There will be lots of things to do, see, and experience.  You also may become more aware of patterns in your past, and through reflection you’ll have a better time analyzing these patterns and overcoming them in your future.

August: Four of Pentacles (reversed)

and i think finally maybe, hopefully, i learned the lesson. the lesson that my life should stop and start for no one, not be prioritzed by anyone but myself. cause its true - i spent a lot of years thinking ‘i’ll join X or do Y or move Z when i meet Whatever person brings that into my life.’ And like, yes, to a degree i would certainly consider participating in something to get to know someone else more, now and still.

but to move for someone? now i think that answer is more complex. now i do not think i would drop my life and move cities on a whim, drop my plans and study what ‘they’ study, go to the school/job they go to. i would be happy if our goals aligned, and if we could make both our goals happen - like say i want to move to europe to join the un, and they want to go to X place in europe for school/a specific job, then great. something like that where we could both pursue our goals. or maybe, say they had a job where i could get their healthcare - then moving somewhere i could do acting/video game things, would be appealing. or being able to try at writing. 

basically though - it would have to be a negotiation now. i wouldn’t just up and move to like new york for someone. i would have to make sure it was worth it for my personal goals, my life, being able to maintain connections to my friends and family, to maintain my hobbies and passions.

i think thats one thing i’ve had to learn.

i spent a lot of time prioritizing other people over me, changing myself to them. while a lot of it i enjoyed to some degree, that wasn’t fair to me. because it was based on what another person wanted more. i very much WANT and NEED myself in relationships to prioritize what i want now. my friends love me for me, for what i like to do, for what we like to do together, for whatever we end up talking or gushing or venting about. we don’t expect each other to change, we love each other for exactly who we are and how we really are. i want that in romantic life too. i deserve that in romantic life too. 

i think i am finally in a point in my life where what i fear, more than someone leaving me or finding me ‘not good enough’ (because it happens, or it doesn’t - but i do not have to change myself to be worthy of love). but instead, i am afraid someone will expect me to change, or mold who i am to appease them. i would rather be alone then treated conditionally like that. i would love to be with someone. but i have also realized it must be someone who truly loves me for me. 

i think that is a place i have never been at in my life before. i think its a good place to be.

Now im sure some of you have seen snippits of my readings for MX before through my lovely friend Kate on vlive, but this time I’ll be posting my most recent readings myself!

Now, due to not knowing the boys personally, these can be rather vague and are for entertainment purposes only 🙈 the future changes all the time based on the decisions we make so~

Anywaysssss, onto the readings! I did a different spread for each member so c:

Kihyun – Empress Spread

• 1) Kihyun loves when things are balanced out, and enjoys treating others with compassion

• 2) He nurtures others by guiding them and offering the best advice he can that would help them overcome their obstacles

• 3) The emotion flowing through him is excitement. He is currently overjoyed and pumped most likely due to the tour c: He’s proud of how far he and the boys have come

• 4) He is a lot more powerful than he believes. He influences a lot with just his mind and willpower alone. If he wants something, he will get it if he puts his mind to it

• 5) The power he exerts is being perceptive. He is quick and sharp minded, catching on quickly to what goes on around him, and manages to react quite well c:

This was actually a really difficult spread to read, just because I feel a lot of pain in your current situation, and I really feel for you. I know that may not be what you want to read, but there’s some good to come, I promise!

1. The Present (The Tower)

It’s very likely that you’ve heard about the Tower. It’s a card that is all about endings, almost always painful ones. You’re probably going through a lot of turmoil in your life at the moment, and are probably struggling with whatever is being thrown your way. The Tower also suggests that you’re not feeling a great deal of control over your life and you don’t know how to get things back on track. However, this position also deals a lot with how you are perceiving the situation. You certainly feel like disaster has struck, and that’s probably why you’re here seeking advice from Tarot. Be aware, though, that this crisis you’re dealing with may be less catastrophic than you feel it is. Of course, that doesn’t make your feelings any less valid, I’m more trying to tell you that there’s probably more hope for you than it seems, and things may still be salvageable.

2. The Challenge (Ace of Pentacles)

This is an odd card to come up in the challenge position, since it’s usually so positive. It suggests that recently you’ve had some good luck in terms of your career or some other aspect of your external life. Maybe you got a new job, or an idea of yours is finally coming to fruition. That’s a good thing! But unfortunately, for whatever reason, this new success is causing issues in other aspects of your life. Maybe you have less time for your family, friends or partner, and so your relationships are struggling. Maybe a new job or occupation is taking its toll on your mental or physical health. 3. The Past (Nine of Cups)

This position deals with how your past has brought you to this present, and once again this is quite a positive card. In the past, you’ve felt a great deal of fulfilment, and have found satisfaction in your situation. However, there is a darker side to this card in that it is still a Minor Arcana card, and so this satisfaction is fleeting. Your happiness didn’t last for as long as you would have liked. I’m starting to get a picture of your situation - it seems likely that your recent successes in your external life brought you a great deal of happiness - for a while. 4. The Future (Ten of Swords, Reversed)

Your near future involves a lot of healing and moving on, as might be expected. Some things in your life have come to an end, you’ve gone through a lot of pain, but soon things will start looking up. 5. Above (Nine of Cups, Reversed)

This spread is full of riddles, and keeps putting generally positive card in negative positions, and vice versa. The title “Above” is quite cryptic, I know, but to clarify it’s all about your higher goals and the things you’re consciously working towards and possibly seeking advice on. The Nine of Cups Reversed, however, is all about broken relationships, but also deals with fixing those relationships - and ending them, if necessary. Your main focus at the moment is repairing the relationships in your life that are broken as a result of the disaster that’s suddenly come to you. My feeling would be that because of your dedication to a new opportunity, a relationship that meant a lot to you has fallen to pieces, and now you want to fix that. This card asks you to consider: what needs to be done to fix this relationship? Should the relationship be fixed at all?

6. Below (Seven of Pentacles)

This position deals with your subconscious, your goals and driving forces that you may not be aware of. Deep down, you are driven by the bigger picture. You’re a hard working individual with a lot of motivation. You’re willing to put in the hard work and you have the dedication. Maybe the opportunity represented by the Ace of Pentacles isn’t so much a surprising new opportunity as much as it is something you’ve been working on for a long time. The Seven of Pentacles suggests that this new opportunity is something that is very important to you. Despite all the trouble it’s caused you, you’re not willing to give up on this new opportunity yet. A better question to ask yourself is: what are you willing to sacrifice to pursue it? Is there a compromise you can reach? This position in the spread often presents a message that comes as a surprise for the querent (a.k.a. you). Maybe you didn’t realise any of this about yourself before, but you truly are a driven individual, and you shouldn’t give up on everything you’ve worked so hard for just yet.

7. Advice (Eight of Swords, Reversed)

It’s time to break out of old beliefs and think outside of the box! Challenge everything you thought you knew, really stop and think about whether something is true or if you’ve just never questioned it. The Eight of Swords Reversed is telling you that there is a solution to your problem, but it won’t be what you expect it to be. At the moment, it’s true your situation is somewhat dire. With a little bit of creative thinking, though, you can come up with something. More than anything, your own beliefs and habits are holding you back. Do you have to do things the way you’ve always done them? The answer is probably no.

8. External Influences (King of Cups)

Despite all this turmoil, you have a steady and calming influence somewhere in your life. This could be someone uninvolved in whatever you’re current crisis is, or anyone you’re close to. Court cards, such as the King of Cups, often represent people in your life, and this would make a lot of sense in this context. Right now, it would be a good idea to lean on the people who provide emotional support for you, who are stable and are readily able to give you all the care you need. The person or people this card represents are people who you should be leaning on and drawing energy from in these difficult times.

9. Hopes and/or Fears (Three of Cups)

Much like the Ten of Swords reversed, this card shows that you want deep connection, though this one deals largely with platonic relationships specifically. You want friendship in your life, people who are close to you and support you. You’re going through a tough time at the moment, so it’s very natural that you’d be craving support from your friends. Conversely, you fear isolation and a loss of the support you rely on. If you’re going through a rocky period with the relationships in your life, this is also something entirely normal to feel, especially if you’ve recently lost someone important to you. It could also mean that you have a lot of people in your life, but you fear the loss of one person in particular, probably someone you’re romantically involved in. While it’s totally okay to miss said person, this card reminds you to focus more on your friendships rather than your romantic engagements.

10. Three of Swords

This is such a difficult card to end a spread on. It seems that, however the situation plays out, you’re likely to suffer a heartbreak. In the end, you’re being pulled in a number of different directions and at some point something’s got to go. You can’t have everything. Often, the Three of Swords talks about break-ups of the romantic kind, which has been hinted out throughout the spread and seems to be confirmed here. Unfortunately, you’re likely to lose someone close to you who you care about. However, no card is entirely negative, and the Three of Swords reminds us of the necessity of endings and sadness. Things must be sacrificed for your ultimate well-being and success. As hard as it is to live through, you will through it, and the rest of the spread shows that you’re driven, you care about your work, and you have a good support network to lean back on.

Overall, it would seem that there’s a lot of pain for you in the near future. Expect your relationships to be put to the test, and possibly expect to lose some people who are dear to you. At the moment, you’re seeking out human connection, it’s one of your driving forces, but don’t forget that there are already people in your life who support and care for you. Your career is also something that’s important to you, even if you’re questioning if it’s for the best right now, and deep down you want to keep pushing for it (even if you don’t fully realise it yet). Keep going, you can get through all of this, and you’re strong nature will carry you through.

Trinity

Trinity summer festival 2017 I went to a festival this weekend. A paranormal and metaphysical local festival. And I must say that I’m so glad I did some research on what I want to resonate in my life, and how to connect with more like minded people. I found out about this festival doing research to find things in my area where I can connect with kind souls and essentially good spirits. I requested two days off of work to just be able to connect with every single vendor at this festival. I never request time off of work anymore, but as soon as I went back I knew I would be surrendering a lot of my free(me) time for a not so fulfilling job.


When I first walked in, I didn’t look around at all of my surroundings to take everything in, like I used to do. I’m an empath and too easily I become stressed by, and I don’t even have to try it just HAPPENS, taking on everyone’s emotional status around me. And at this festival, I learned that where I bring my positive energy I found that more people followed my energy.


I walked in and saw the alien set up first. YES IM NOT ALONE ALIENS DO EXIST. And it was so amazing to connect with those people at the first two tables. My goal after walking in and seeing that first vendor, and I decided this on the spot, was to go to every single vendor station and try to see if I could connect with these people. And I only wanted to put my money in the pockets of people who were working to fulfill their life’s dream.


Recently, I came to the realization that I Only want to surround myself with artists, poets, spiritual people, musicians, and creators of all kinds. Because that’s all I want to do: create beautiful things.

I also don’t find myself being surrounded by people who don’t have faith in anything. Whether it be god, spirituality, a higher power, or even Themselves.

So, at this festival, I met a bunch of wonderful people. One on one. And that’s how I prefer it.

My moms ex lover was there with this girlfriend as she was vending. And as I was walking up to the next tent, in the line of vendors, I was reading these amazing inspirational quotes and I felt myself being drawn towards the positive energy within that specific tent. And then I heard someone call my name, “Allie!” I honestly thought I was hearing voices haha. I was Not expecting to see anyone I knew.

The guy my mom had been with in the past, his name is John. He is awesome, I loved a lot of my moms old lovers, and he was just so genuine and awesome. And he’s a huge horror buff. He owned a haunted house by the shore for a long time, I remembered. We went to the Eastern State Penitentiary when I was in 7th or 8th grade, and I had a BLAST. I wish that I could’ve just walked around the place as it was, without all of the flashing lights, fake cobwebs, and people in masks and suits jumping out and attempting to scare us. I was scared, but only because they touched us, and I didn’t know that was allowed lol 🙈🙈

But, anyway, I went into this tent because I heard my name and was drawn in more, and I met Johns girlfriend and I love her spirit. She writes poetry, I could tell by the journals and pictures she had sprawled out across the table tops. I found out after talking with her a bit that she was an English major and she’s a teacher. That’s so beautiful. I love the English language. More people need to expand their vocabulary more.

Now, I recently bought a bunch of notebooks to try to organize my life better, and I spend so much money at staples(I finally got a rewards card since I always spend more than triple what I was planning on when I walked in lol.)

Growing up, I’ve always kept a diary or a journal. Just so I could write down the beautiful moments in my life and be able to walk down memory lane when I opened them up 10/20/30 years down the line.

I CONNECTED to this journal. I connected to it. It was the first thing I saw when I walked up. I couldn’t stop staring at it. It was exactly what I needed to read, and feel, and connect with.

I went around to every vendor on the first day, and I didn’t spend buy much, if anything. I have to be careful with my money since I have to support myself fully, and I wanted to make sure I was investing into passionate people’s dreams.

Because too many dreams die when people are younger than 12.

And I’m Going to pursue my dreams. I don’t need anyone to understand that, because it’s not their life to lead, it’s mine. It’s My journey. I was not put on this planet to live another person’s life.

It’s my life.

I am so happy I had the opportunity to connect with all of these beautiful, amazing, like minded people.

Surround yourself with people who inspire you to be the best possible version of yourself, and the universe will do everything in its power to help you and push you to accomplishing your goals and fulfilling your dreams.

I connected with this one wonderful human being, Jenn, and she makes bracelets. And that’s one of my hobbies I just never found the correct way to keep good track of my beads hahahaha. And I saw her method and it made me so happy.

The reasons I went to this festival was to get my palm read(which was EPIC AND AWESOME,) get an angel card reading(I’m avoiding tarot cards bc the energy is more associated with things I don’t want to connect with,) and to buy some moonstone and aquamarine(my birthstone.)

JENN, my new found Leo friend who was sent to me from God, made me a bracelet specifically for me. With moonstone! And amethyst! And I can’t remember the last one, but it’s a darker shade of green. And purple and dark green are my favorite colors right now. She presented me every single bead she brought with her. And she had SO MANY BRACELETS ON. And now I know she made them all herself I could imagine.

She asked me which pattern I wanted, and she had shown me one of her bracelets, one with moonstone. And I LOVED the pattern. It was a moonstone, separator, amethyst bead, separator, moonstone, separator, amethyst, and so on.. And I asked for her to make me that exact one but instead of it being only purple, I wanted to incorporate the darker shade of green in that as well. And she made me this bracelet. Specifically how I wanted it. And it amazes me. I am so happy I met her and connected with Jenn the way I did.

I even met someone, who another friend of mine(who was also vending at this place!!!! Who I had tried to help vend at Froggy Daze last fall, but the weather was atrocious being an outdoor festival.) had recommended for me to go speak with to learn how to handle my situation better. Someone who suffered from Crohn’s disease for half of her life. And she found out she was sick when she was 22. I am 22. I loved her and her energy so much that I bought all of her books on wellness, crohns and colitis, and a book about family hardships and values, and one yin yang book that she had an excerpt in.

***i forgot to mention how this one girl was selling her artwork, and I bought one after I talked to her about the concept behind why she made it the way she did. And it was beautiful. And it had to do with a diary excerpt from Vincent Van Gogh. She was selling her prints for 4 dollars. This lady who gave me a spiritual reading refused to let me pay her, and it filled me with so much happiness that I started to cry and I had to hug her. Becoming a full-time musician: How one artist took the leap

Going pro. Quitting the day job. Taking the plunge. Living the dream.

A year ago, Laini Marenick (of the band Laini and the Wildfire) quit her day job and became a professional musician. Like the first year of any new business endeavor, there were many ups and downs.

Laini was kind enough to answer questions about the challenges and rewards of her new life as a full-time musician. I think her story will be useful for any artist who’s considering taking a similar risk.

An interview with Laini Marenick

When did you decide to quit your job and pursue music full time? 

It was a slow process that involved me testing the waters first before I committed to the idea of being a full-time musician.

In the summer of 2015, I had a catharsis of sorts after spending two weekends in a row at what I guess you can say were “life-changing” concerts. One was the Newport Folk Festival, and the other was Lake Street Dive. I felt so alive and so real and authentic—it was like I rediscovered a part of myself that I had buried for so long—more than 10 years. I came home, and the next day our song “Newport” spilled out of me which described that exact experience.

We were already in the process of writing our debut EP, and now I was really questioning what I wanted my future to look like. Those cathartic moments at the concerts solidified the fact that I needed music to be a bigger part of my life.

That Monday morning, I told my boss I had to step-down to part time, and I was part-time for about a year and a half before I finally left my job completely in August 2017.

What pieces of the puzzle had fallen into place where you felt like it was time to make the leap?

In the year and a half that I was part time, I adjusted to making less money. I consolidated my debt. I started “budgeting.” I cancelled a bunch of monthly services. I lowered my car insurance payments and my student loans. It all adds up. You don’t realize how much money you’re wasting until you don’t have any money to waste! I also picked up a few private piano lessons for extra income.

But even with my financials in order, things were still unbalanced with work and music. My work was suffering. I was trying to direct a program for kids with severe emotional problems on a 3 day/week schedule, and it just didn’t work. And my music was suffering too. I was completely drained trying to push forward with the upcoming release of my album Wandering. Things were falling out of place rather than falling into place. I guess you can say it came down to one of those cliché “shit or get off the pot” moments.

So like any normal human, I drank some wine and asked my friend to give me an impromptu weeknight tarot card reading, which pointed me in the right direction (and inspired our song “Wandering”). Deep down, I already knew the answer was to quit, but leaving a job that I loved and had devoted 7 years of my life to (plus 6 years of school for my master’s degree in social work, a clinical license, and all of the accompanying debt) was terrifying. But at this point, I was already functioning with a lot less income, so I had some confidence that I could figure out how to make ends’ meet when I left my job completely.

How do you self-manage your workload as a pro musician? What’s an “average” day look like? 

I make sure I always set aside time to schedule out my week, and that whatever I’m working on is related directly to my goals—which I create every 3 months or so. It’s so easy to become overwhelmed with the all things you have to handle as a DIY musician—social media, booking, writing, rehearsing, making videos, marketing, publicity—I mean the list goes on and on.

I usually start the day with something that makes me happy and excited to get out of bed. It often involves walking my dog and listening to a podcast, or cooking a breakfast I really like. Then I block out my day according to my goals/tasks. If I’m writing, I do that first since that’s when I’m the most focused. I spend 15-45 minutes on social media talking to people and posting content, followed by 2-3 hours on music business related tasks, which could be any number of things depending on what my goals are.

Around lunch time, I take care of any personal calls/errands, followed by a short break. In the afternoon, I usually rehearse on my own. By about 4:00, I’m headed off to teach piano for a few hours. I have band rehearsal a few times a week in the evenings. I also try to do as much food prep, cleaning, laundry, and social media at night so that I wake up with less on my to-do list.

What’s generating the most revenue for you?

It fluctuates. Generally, live shows are where we make the most money, especially when we’re able to get on any festival shows, as opposed to clubs/venues. Merch/CD sales are a close second.

That’s regarding the band’s income. A lot of my personal income comes from teaching private piano lessons. I know many people might feel like that’s a “day job,” and teaching may not be for everyone. But for me, the fact that I am doing something related to music every hour of the day—whether it’s teaching, writing, booking, etc.—is inspiring. It feels effortless and fun. It doesn’t feel like a chore. I don’t feel drained. It’s a stream of income that feeds me emotionally (and physically!), and it feels good to know that I’m helping these kids discover something that has been such a guiding force in my life.

What do you wish you knew a year ago that you know now?

I let the beliefs of the general population get to me. I questioned myself often. “Am I too old to be doing this? I’m over 30. I should be focused on having a family, not pursuing some crazy dream.”

No one was saying these things to me really, but I felt like the world was judging me. And I think a lot of women who are over 30 and not living the typical “have a family and settle down lifestyle” feel the same way. So that pressure I felt fueled some anxiety for me. I had to get the album out as fast I could before it was “too late.”

Now, I’m more focused on just writing the best song I can and not rushing anything because my biological clock may or may not be ticking. Our music attorney said something once that stuck with me: “You’re not a loaf of bread, you don’t expire.”

And though I still have my moments, I believe that most of the time now.

What have been your biggest successes in your DIY marketing efforts?

Twitter has been really great for us. It’s unusual, I know, since Twitter is typically just a black hole of politics and random people DM’ing you to “check out their latest song.”

We developed a method that helps us connect with like-minded people, and we’ve made friends and fans all over the world, which is really cool. Anyone we follow usually will check out our page, and see our music video (great video content is important) which is pinned right at the top. Usually, they’ll start engaging with me right away.

I talk to everyone who talks to me, and I ask our Twitter followers personal questions. I know a lot of them by name, not just their Twitter handle. Lots of people have impressive numbers in terms of Twitter followers. But the fact that a lot of our followers feel connected to us and have become fans of our music is a big win.

The other thing I’m really proud of is all the press coverage the band received for Wandering. Doing my own press campaign was grueling work— 50 different blogs, tons of research, some harsh rejections, and Excel spreadsheets that seem to go on forever—but still, I’m so glad I decided to DIY it. I got a ton of features for the band and ended up on the cover of the entertainment section in a major local newspaper that’s sold statewide.

How about your biggest failures?

The Spotify playlisting company we worked with when we released Wandering didn’t quite give the impact we hoped for. We got added to a few playlists, and the increased plays were cool to see, but nothing ever materialized. We were hoping for exposure to a larger audience than what our results showed, and that some of those listeners would become fans of the band (not just the song). That didn’t seem to happen.

I will say that the team we worked with was GREAT, and we may try it again in the future. But for this particular release, it was disappointing, especially since this was where almost all of our album marketing money went. It felt like a huge failure since we kind of banked on this to help “take us to the next level.” It didn’t.

Besides streaming promotion, there some piece of the puzzle that’s still missing, that you think could take things to the next level… next time?

I think we have yet to create that undeniable song that becomes the trademark for the band. I love all of the music we’ve created so far and I’m extremely proud of it. But, we’ve been a band for less than 3 years, and the songs that we’ve put out are literally the first songs I’ve ever written.

Our EP and album were definitely experimental in terms of us figuring out our sound and who we are as a band. I think now we’re a lot clearer on that, we play better together, and we’re better able to blend the guys’ hard rock roots with my love for 60s soul and powerhouse female vocalists.

So, the focus as of right now, is to write the best songs we can write. We’re also working with a producer this time around, who produced some gold and platinum records. Up until now, all our songs have been self-produced, and I think having that extra set of ears is going to be huge for us in taking our music to the next level.

Your “Live from the Lake” video series is really cool. How did it come together?

One thing we’ve learned is that video is king when it comes to engaging people on social media. We thought doing a cover series would be a fun way to engage our fans and maybe get some new fans, but we wanted to make it a little more exciting than your average cover video.

We are lucky enough that our drummer, Rob, has a boat and we usually all hang out on the boat in Lake Zoar anyway, so it felt like a natural fit. Our bass player, Mark, brings a small recording device for the audio that he later runs through ProTools, and we film using an iPhone on a tripod.

People loved the first one so we rolled with it! They are SO much fun to film, but never without challenges. The wakes, the camera falling over, bugs, the shaker falling IN the lake (shakers float by the way)—we have more outtakes and blooper reels than you can possibly imagine!

What’s next?

We are currently in a writing phase and hope to have some new songs out by Spring 2019. Other than that, I’m diving deep into social media marketing so we can expand our following and hopefully by the time our new songs come out, we’ll have some really excited fans.

What would you tell someone who’s ready to take the plunge and tackle music full time?

The stories you hear where someone just impulsively “quit their job” one day so they could pursue their dreams are misleading and make all of us feel like being a full time musician is impossible. Maybe that technique works for a small portion of the population. But for the majority of people, including myself, becoming a full time musician means months and maybe even years of planning.

Take one small step at a time, until you’re financially and emotionally ready. You’ll be surprised at how your motivation increases and opportunities open up as you gradually start spending less time on work, and more time on music.

And when you do take the plunge, have a routine in place and specific goals/tasks that you work on everyday—some related to the actual music making part and some related to the business side of things.

What are your go-to resources for your career?

The DIY Musician Podcast is my favorite, and one of the early sources that I credit to giving me the courage and knowledge I needed to figure out how to pull off being a full time musician. I also really like the Break the Business podcast and I find the Song Exploder podcast very inspiring for writing.

I also own some of Tom Jackson’s Live Music Method DVDs. Totally worth the investment for any live band who wants to up their live performance game. And if there’s something you’re really confused by, but know you need to do it to move your career forward (like licensing, or social media marketing) take an online course. I’ve taken courses with Dave Kusek’s New Artist Model and Bree Noble (Female Musician Academy) and have had positive experiences with both.
