For the 100 Random Prompts ask: Tsukumo Yuma and 90 :D
from the, as I call it, “100 prompts meme”Summary: Once Yuma set his eyes on something, there was no way he’d let go.Word count: 2.608Note: on Sunday, I was writing about a heavily depressing scene so it did take me a while to even get herebut for goodness’ sake, I think I can’t comedy… OTL (also, this wasn’t supposed to get this long ^^; I guess I got carried away)
Rio snickered into her hand while hiding her mischievous grin.“Don’t!” Ryoga barked, a warning in his tone that still sounded embarrassed and annoyed.“Who could’ve thought that you, my dearest brother, would lose- ”“Shut up!” her twin shouted, irritated, before he continued to munch on the rice of his bento. He didn’t mean on prying on them. All he wanted to do in the break that finally arrived after a very long and draining lesson was to eat in peace with his friends. Even if he had no idea where Kotori was. But this bit in the twin’s conversation was enough for Yuma’s eyes to widen in shock. He had long forgotten the topic he and his friends were talking about. He couldn’t even tell if anyone noticed it and tried to bring him back into the conversation. Or if Astral was even talking to him. It was too hard to believe for him that Shark, of all people, would lose. And especially to someone who wasn’t him. He wondered for a short second if his opponent had been Kaito. The urge to find out more prickled over his skin. Without any other word to his friends, he darted behind them and almost leapt in front of the twin. They shriek and held their bentos out of reach from Yuma.“Who was it?!”Breathing heavily, the twins look at each other.“Wh- what- ”“Who did you duel?!” Yuma clarified his question.Ryoga gasped that almost sounded like choking. Rio laughed at him. Her twin’s cheek turned crimson red as Yuma’s friends joined them. Everyone but Yuma could see that he wanted to hide from all of them.“Who did you duel?!” Yuma asked him again. “Who was it?! Who beat you?!”The last sentence provoked an even greater waterfall of burning questions from Yuma’s friends. On top of them was Yuma, still trying his hardest to find out who on earth Shark dueled and who this magnificent duelist was to even beat him.“Believe it or not- ”“No, Rio – stop!” Ryoga tried to defend the last bit of his dignity but to no avail.“Our sweet and beautiful Mizuki- ”“Rio!”“Ko-to-ri!” his twin sister spilled with utter glee in her magenta coloured eyes.Ryoga slapped a hand on to his face while the other students around them, minus his sister, gaped at him with open mouths. Only Cathy remembered her manners and covered it with her clawed hands.“No way… ,” Tetsuo mumbled.“It is!” Rio said with a proud smile and crossed her arms.“H- how?! And why-ura?!” Tokunosuke wondered in astonishment.“So, to summarize… ,” the class representative Todoroki tried to phrase, “you weren’t just pitying her, were you?”Rio snickered again. “He didn’t even have had the time to with her crazy combos!”“Rio!” Ryoga hissed once more.“I mean – she obliterated him in her first turn!”That caused another round of gaping at them. It was visibly clear that Kotori’s friends had a hard time believing her. But then again, all of them knew that Rio wasn’t a liar. And Ryoga’s embarrassed posture spoke volumes. It was all Yuma needed to dash off the roof. No yelling voice could stop him. He darted down the stairs, past the classrooms to get to the schoolyard. There, he finally spotted her, chatting blissfully with her two friends Sei, Sachi and Aki.“Kotori!” he yelled, wheezing and panting. The recipient as well as a dozen other students flinched. Kotori turned around to him. The other students slowly returned to their own conversation and what they did as soon as they saw that it was Yuma who shouted like this.“Yuma, what on earth are you- ”“Duel me!”Kotori blinked surprised.“ …Excuse me?”“You heard me right! Duel me!”»You’re not even in the right condition to duel,« Astral chided him with a tired sigh.“Shut it! It’s always – a good time… to duel!” Yuma responded and still gasped for air.But much to his surprise, a cocky expression appeared on Kotori’s face. She smirked at him.“No.”Yuma’s eyes widen for the second time during this break. Her friends whispered quietly to her.“Kotori!” he whined and extended the last syllable.“Are you really sure?” Sachi asked her, stunned.“You improved so much!” Aki added.“Why don’t you want to further test your skills?” Sei wondered.“I won’t duel you,” his friend told him. She crossed her arms. “That is… not yet… ”This was practically a ‘yes’ to his challenge.“Prepare yourself, Kotori!” he said and readied his Duel Disk. But Kotori held up her hand in a graceful way.“Easy there, Yuma. I said ‘not yet’.”Yuma’s posture almost went limb as if he was a balloon and Kotori just stabbed him with a needle.“Why?!” he whined again.“You’ll have to do me a favour first,” Kotori answered and strolled towards him.Yuma knit his eyebrows.“Why?”Kotori snickered.“For starters, eat a bowl of vegetables, containing cucumber, bell pepper – you decide its colour –, and, most importantly, tomatoes!”At first, Yuma eyed her in confusion. After the last ingredient, his eyes widen a third time. But then he remembered his duel against Yasai Hosaku during the World Duel Carnival who was practically addicted to vegetables. He ate tomatoes during their duel and they didn’t even taste that bad. The ones they had at home were a completely different story, though. What a strange request. But he wouldn’t be Tsukumo Yuma if he’d chicken out of it.“Haha, no problem!” he boasted. The smirk on Kotori’s lips turned a bit more mischievous.“Really? Then let’s raise the stakes, shall we?” she prompted.“Hah! Bring it!”“You’ll make yourself the vegetable salad, about an hour before dinner. Actually, eat them raw. Don’t add any flavours like salad dressing or yoghurt. Also, you’ll send me selfies. One – making the salad, two – eating it, and three – finishing it. For. A. Whole. Week.”Yuma still thought that this request was really odd but he wanted to duel her way more and see for himself how much she had improved.»Shouldn’t you find out how she improved in the first place?« Astral wanted to know.“Deal! You’ll see – the week will be over in no time! Kattobingu da ore!”Kotori giggled again while Astral sighed and almost growled at the same time in annoyance.»Why are you like this, Yuma?!«“Can’t wait for your selfies, then!” Kotori chirped and strolled back into the school building as the bell demanded the students back to the lessons.
Much to his displeasure, it was easier said than done. He was rarely standing in the kitchen, usually either fir grabbing something to eat either from the fridge or sitting down at the dining table with his family. He had everything ready to make the salad – all three ingredients Kotori had asked him, a knife and a cutting board. But he was still very reluctant on getting on to the task Kotori had asked him for.»Don’t forget that you need to take a photograph of yourself.«“ …You’re not helping, man!” Yuma grumbled.Astral only shrugged. »I was more interested in finding out how she improved in such a short time. It’s not my fault you’re acting before you’re thinking.«Yuma grumbled a bit more. He heaved a sigh before taking the knife into his hand. But he still didn’t start chopping the ingredients. A quiet beeping from his Duel Disk distracted him. It was a message from Kotori. Are you eating dinner later this evening?Or are you simply skipping it? ;)–KotoriYuma grumbled.“I’m not skipping anything!” he promised, more to himself than to anyone in particular.» …I – didn’t say anything at all?« Astral countered, visibly and audibly confused. He didn’t read Kotori’s short message thus he didn’t understand that he was actually talking to her – even if she didn’t hear him. Yuma cleared his throat.“Anyway, as I was saying- ”»You weren’t saying anything, either,« Astral pointed out.Yuma pouted at him. He flinched, however, as his Duel Disk suddenly beeped. It was a video call. Even before he accepted it, Yuma already had an idea who called him. Once he saw the green locks of his best friend, he grumbled again.“What? Checking that I don’t chicken out?”Kotori snickered.“Actually, I just wanted to make sure that you washed the vegetables.”Astral blinked. »Huh? Why do you have to wash them before eating them?«“The dirt and sand and everything might not be the biggest issue,” Yuma answered.Kotori listened carefully.“I think it’s because of these… chemicals the farmers and so on use to kill… the things that attack the plants,” Yuma said, slowly. “Ne, Kotori – what are these chemicals called again?”“Pesticides. It sounds as if you’re trying to explain it to Astral.”“I am.”Kotori nodded. “They are actually intended to serve as plant protection products. You could imagine as protecting the plants – in this case, the vegetables – from harmful weeds, fungi, or insects.”Yuma shivered.“Eow, gross… ”“But you shouldn’t just wash them just because of this reason,” Kotori warned him. “This rule also implies to wholefood products – even if it’s forbidden by law to use pesticides but you never know who had been holding them in the end. Personally, I wouldn’t even trust the obots to the fullest. There still could be remnants of pesticides and harmful substances but as well as bad bacteria, fecal germs or mildew.”After her explanation, Yuma looked like he could vomit right into the sink. With an expression in his eyes that resembled some kind of a death glare, he stared back to the vegetables. Kotori snickered again.“Make sure to wash them properly, then you’re fine. After all, they are healthy- ”“I never cared about that!”Kotori sighed. “I know… ”“And most of them taste yikes!” He stuck out his tongue. While she closed her eyes and Yuma took all vegetables to wash them, Astral peered briefly to Kotori. Since Yuma was occupied with his task, he couldn’t see the soft expression in her eyes when she opened them again. He had a feeling that there maybe was a bit more to her request than just to mock her best friend a bit. After washing them, Kotori advised him on how to cut the vegetables without harming himself in the process. But since the most important nutritive substances, as Kotori called them, were in the skins rather than the vegetables’ flesh, she recommended him not to cut away the skins. His bowl was filled in due time.“ …You still want that selfie?”“Two selfies for today – when you eat the salad and when you empty the bowl. Since I already saw you preparing it,” Kotori answered. Then she winked at him with the cutest smile she had in store. “So I hope you enjoy your salad!”Yuma grimaced.
In the beginning, Yuma complained much and procrastinated much. Even if he was able to start the vegetable salad – particularly leaving out the tomatoes at first – and sent his best friend one of the two requested photographs, it still took him long after dinner to finish it. Astral was almost amazed that Yuma managed to choke down the tomato slices, albeit moaning and whining much. The second time he made himself a vegetable salad, he choked down the tomatoes right away. But after that, he had less trouble eating the rest of this vegetable salad. While doing it, Yuma diligently took the photographs for his best friend. However, Kotori pretended that she hadn’t received any photographs since the fourth day which was why she extended her request before accepting to duel Yuma. Although he whined to duel her right away, he never complained once because of her request anymore. Since long, Astral gave up on urging Yuma to find out as to why she suddenly improved her dueling skills. The human boy’s top priority was to fulfill her request as best as he could in order to finally duel her which was why any further try was for naught. When Kotori postponed his challenge a second time, Astral had a feeling that she was stalling. It seemed that she herself wasn’t ready to duel him just yet. Yuma, not realizing her possible procrastinating, still didn’t say anything against eating the vegetables before dinner. Because the change passed them barely unnoticed. Except for the tomatoes, Yuma had no problem with eating the bowl before dinner and slowly started to ask less and less for a third or even second portion. He even started to skip dessert altogether which has been a must since Astral lived with the human boy. By the end of the month, making himself the vegetable salad had become a habit for Yuma. It happened more than once per day that both, his sister as well as his grandmother asked him if he was sick. Yuma always denied irritated. It even happened that he took a bell pepper or half of a cucumber he cut into pieces before leaving his home, whether for school or any duels in the afternoon. Astral could barely remember the last time Yuma ate something fast food related. After a long and tiring school day, Yuma decided that he had had enough. He confronted her right after leaving the school building. Kotori blinked for a moment, and Astral thought she would postpone the duel again but much to his surprise, she complied with a quiet sigh. She nodded.“Okay, you win- ”Yuma cheered excitedly and quickly took out his Duel Disk.“Wait – let’s grab something to eat first- ”“Nah, I’m good. Oba-chan made me a super duper awesome bento for lunch!” He grinned while petting his belly at the thought of it and was barely able to hold back his drool.“Come to think of it – you finished it so fast, we didn’t really see what you brought with you,” their class representative mused.“What did you had in your bento anyway?” Tetsuo wanted to know.Yuma shrugged after a short moment.“Well… the usual, I’d guess – some tomato, cucumber and some eggplant slices, some renkon and white cabbage,” he counted. Right after that, he hummed a bit. “Man, who would’ve thought that renkon tastes so good?! I dig it!”The disbelieving and almost shocked expression that settled on every face of his friends escaped him while Yuma rambled on. Kotori then proceeded with giggling quietly and putting both of her hands around her nose and mouth. But this didn’t cover her blush.“I… guess it did get a bit out of hand… ?”Yuma stopped and turned around. “What got a bit out of hand?”Astral sighed.»She tricked you into eating more healthy food.«Yuma’s eyes widen in shock.“She did what?! Kotori!”“Well – you stopped stuffing yourself with greasy, ugly fast food so it was totally worth it!” Kotori tried to defend herself. They continued to quarrel for a bit before finally starting their duel. In the middle of the duel, Astral was able to espy both, Ryoga as well as Kaito near the school gate. As they seemed to quarrel as well, it slowly dawned to him. He couldn’t come up with any other reason as to why especially Kaito, who wasn’t a student from Heartland Academy, would come to this school. Kotori was able to improve so much in such a short time, and even managed to defeat Kamishiro Ryoga in a duel, because she requested both of their help.
A/N: little trivia – renkon is a root vegetable (the translation in German is “lotus root”, I just wasn’t able to find a direct translation into English for it, I’m sorry)
