Here’s Part 2 of some ideas I’m doodled for my Winx rewrite

Last post seemed to do better than I expected and I’m glad a few people enjoyed it. So here are some more things I want to work with.

I like Artu and Roxy’s relationship but I would have also liked some backstory on them and more depth. Like Gantlos said “it’s just a dog”. How did Roxy get Artu? Is he adopted or bought? Is there a reason he doesn’t like anyone outside of Roxy and Klaus?

In my rewrite, yes. Abandoned as a puppy, a kid Roxy took him in after her mother left her dad unexpectedly. She basically raised Artu and he means a lot to her, but she never socialised him since she herself isn’t social with people (so while Artu may tolerate someone’s prescence he doesn’t like being touched or seen upclose). Roxy raising Artu is also why she gets pissed and earns her fairy form but doesn’t want the fairy gig since it ended up hurting her dog, because as a fairy the wizards are after her and Gantlos hurt Artu.

Speaking of Gantlos

Gantlos my beloved you’re so fucking bland the only personality trait you have is having fucked up pointy hands and a cool hat <3

Ok in all honestly I like his apathy to animals and the Winx in general, but that also applies to the other wizards to some extent. At least you can say something about the other wizards; Orgon’s voice is top tier, Duman has really cool powers and design, Anagan’s banter with Flora’s entertaining. This one’s technically a headcannon I made cannon in the rewrite. I did my research btw.

Gantlos has a pretty intense fear of deers also called Elafiphobia, even asking Duman to not shapeshift into one. It’s pretty bad, seeing a deer gets him pretty close to a panic attack. I’m not going to spoil why but I’ll say it’s a consequence of the Great Fairy Hunt. In fact all the Wizards despite being the cause have been affected by the fairy hunt, either overall or because of a major event. Gantlos’ deer phobia is also why he doesn’t like/care about animals initially, I mean, why should he like them? Just cause they’re cute? Hah!

Apart from Riven and Musa I hate the melodrama in season 4 it’s so shit. Since in my version Sky isn’t in the story cause king stuff, Mitzi is narratively cremated and Nabu doesn’t die, on top of planning to expand on Anagan and Flora’s relationship as rivals and Anagan “flirting” with her, it’d be weird for Helia to be like “eh”. Like even if Flora can hold her own I think he’d at least be a little concerned and annoyed at Anagan.

So yeah, Helia’s conflict is having a case of Impostor syndrome because Anagan’s a foil to him; confident, extroverted, confrontational, and actually bounces off of Flora really well. (Like, I don’t ship Anagan and Flora but the people who do I don’t blame them, it sounds more interesting) Even if Flora doesn’t reciprocate Anagan’s feelings, Helia feels inadequate and is anxious Flora will lose interest and might even break up with him since he’s the anti-social poet of the group. Timmy could even help after his confidence arc in Season 2. He’s not overprotective of Flora like wanting to fight Anagan since it kinda goes against his pacifism but the narrative doesn’t care about that as much as I do :/

And lastly I think it’s be neat if we saw a more fleshed out dynamic between the Wizards, the best I can think of is when they’re protected by Syllia and Duman almost slips their plan to which Anagan says he’s being whoosy, Orgon complains about being protected by fairies while Gantlos is fine with it.

A lot of the rewrite is focused on fleshing out the wizards because I want complex villains grr, and they’re perfect for it. The Earth Fairies? They’re good but they’re dead in my rewrite soooo-

I like to think Orgon is pretty manipulative of them. Was he always like this? No, but he’s desperate to secure the disappearance of magic from Earth, and his manipulation gets worse and worse as the episodes go on, in the end being threats and guilt-tripping. He still cares but mostly how the wizards can be of service to the Black Circle. And yes Duman is his favorite because he has the best powers. Shapeshifting will always be OP and the best power in my heart.

Anyway that’s all folks. If I make a part 3 it’ll probs cover some other stuff like Jason Queen, which I like his character, it’s perfect for Musa’s development (until they made Bloom the fucking main singer like WHYYY) or perhaps talk about Klaus or Morgana, Tecna and Timmy and more about Nabu. Anyway I’ll go watch some more nostalgic minecraft videos and webtoon rants. See ya!

Bestiaryposting: Holghras Results

Now for what everyone -- or at least a certain percentage -- has been waiting for: the results for the Holghras! Anyone who found that sentence confusing can catch up by checking this page: https://maniculum.tumblr.com/bestiaryposting .

This time around, they should all fit into one post, as the response was a little smaller. I see how it is: everyone wants to draw Spooky Corpse-Eater With Magic, but nobody wants to draw Horny Bird With Problems.

I kid, of course. The Wutugald had some pretty clear visual elements that people could hook onto, but the Holghras entry is mostly about its behavior and doesn't give much information on what it looks like beyond "it's a bird". So it's pretty clear why people might have a harder time drawing artistic inspiration from that one. (And I really and truly appreciate those of you who took a crack at it anyway.) The level of physical description is going to vary a lot entry to entry, I'm afraid -- to some extent I think it's about whether it's an animal the reader is expected to be familiar with, but there are definitely a few detailed visual descriptions of animals most medieval Europeans would have seen because the author wants to do some symbolism. So it's a toss-up. Anyway, here's the link to the description people are working from:

And the results, again roughly in order of appearance. If yours isn't here, let me know -- I saw one post that said something about Tumblr eating their original attempt, presumably out of Bird Homophobia. I'm happy to reblog any that I missed due to Tumblr's functionality.

@bruncikara (link to post here) gives us our first interpretation. I really enjoy the medieval bestiary style, including the use of the Generic Medieval Plant that always reminds me of mutant asparagus. I think the border is designed to evoke the thorns in which the Holghras nests, which I also appreciate. The bird's pose, flat on its back with its neck curved up, is great, and it's shown performing its signature Hide With Dirt move. I think at least some of the inspiration comes from quails here, judging by the head... feather... thing... [Wikipedia break] ... okay, apparently it's just called a "plume", which I should have guessed. This is the first example of the common (and correct!) assumption that the Holghras is a member of the order Galliformes.

@jamiethekeener (link to post here) gives us this one, also posing with its signature dirt clods. I'm reminded of a cardinal, personally. The artist provides a brief comment on their design, noting that they are not a bird expert. I think this is a pretty cute juvenile bird, and the way it holds the dirt comes off as kind of playful.

@silverhart-makes-art (link to post here) has produced another very naturalistic drawing, which (in my non-expert opinion) manages to look very much like a real bird without specifically looking like any bird in particular. They apparently do know birds, because they specifically name-drop Galliformes in their description of their design decisions. I like the decision to also include one of the bird's Signature Behaviors, i.e., the mother carrying her chicks.

@pomrania (link to post here) has given their Holghras a selection of striking features, which they explain in their post. There's a lot in that post, actually, and I really enjoyed reading the whole journey of this particular drawing. You should go read it too -- the post linked above also provides a draft version, a link to a series of progress sketches, and a link to an explanation of their design choices that includes rumination on how to make a bird look "slutty". Go check it out, we'll be here when you get back.

@sweetlyfez (link to post here) describes her design choices briefly, indicating that her goal was to pick Bird Attributes that could look unsettling in combination and suggest that the bird depicted has a "terrible sex life". Mission accomplished, I think -- that bird does not look trustworthy. Also now we know that thing on its head is just called a plume, so good for us. I really like the effect the -- watercolor? I think? I don't know art -- provides, and that seagull-esque spot on its beak really is a great touch.

@rautavaara (link to post here) has done another beautifully stylized drawing with a very pleasant color scheme. They provide a brief explanation of their design decisions in the linked post. I'm particularly struck by the fact that this version of the Holghras apparently carries its young in the same way that the folkloric version of the stork carries babies: in some kind of cloth wrapping held in the beak. I also like that the chick's feet are sticking out.

@mobileleprechaun (link to post here) apparently had some trouble posting this, but I'm glad they got it through, because it's delightful. I like the little bird on the right with its feet sticking straight up, and the other one under its mother's wing/arm. When I first saw this, I was briefly puzzled why the drawing contrasted male and female birds, because they looked quite similar -- then I noticed the tailfeathers -- then I looked more closely at the male's tailfeathers and cracked up a little bit. The linked post provides a brief explanation of the design decisions, including why the wings look so much like arms. It also has a couple tags that I find funny.

@karthara (link to post here) provides this excellent image as well as a brief explanation of their design choices. I love the over-the-top tailfeathers on the extremely-sexy purple male Holghrases, and the babies dangling from under the female's wing, and the fact that the clod of dirt being held up by the juvenile is at least as big as the bird holding it. Also, those ridiculous tailfeathers are apparently inspired by the Onagadori rooster, which means we're back with the Galliformes.

@embervoices (link to post here) did this adorable drawing of the juvenile Holghras. I particularly like that she's taken a different route than having it just hold up the dirt: this one apparently has a little hidey-hole like a trapdoor spider. This is just very cute all around, I like it.

@cheapsweets (link to post here) provides this excellent and action-packed depiction, along with a wonderfully detailed explanation of their design decisions. (I love reading those.) From their post, it's clear that they also know more about birds than I do, and also name-check the Galliformes as the most likely category. Apparently the bird-people of Tumblr have this critter's number. Also, that is a masterful depiction of a bird running off with an egg, I have to say.

@coolest-capybara (link to post here) has done another medieval-styled rendition, which I really enjoy. This is also, I believe, the first appearance of a human in any of these drawings. (Well. Live human, at least.) I enjoy the depiction of the female bird doing her fake limp to lead the human away from her nest while the males engage in their weird drama up in the right. They provide an explanation of their design choices and inspiration in the linked post.

@scarlettbookworm (link to post here) has given us a drawing that showcases several of the odd behaviors described in the entry. The linked post also provides a description of their design process and an explanation of their decisions. I think this is another very cute picture of a bird holding up dirt, and I enjoy the one at the top shouting "HOLGHRAS!" The egg-stealer over in the bottom right is very good also.

@moustawott (link to post here) has drawn this very vulture-like Holghras in what I have to say is a very well-done bushy area. I had to look twice to realize the background was actually cleverly-arranged splashes and blobs of color that strongly suggest that we're in a bush. Very good art, love the style, and that fuzzy baby Holghras is cute as hell. The linked post provides an explanation of the design decisions.

@strixcattus (link to post here) gives us this rendition of the Holghras, which they describe as being inspired by a prairie chicken and a potoo. Prairie chickens are, of course... Galliformes. Another tally mark in that column. I'm particularly delighted by the giant mouth on the chick in the bottom right. As they did last time, the artist has provided a detailed modern-naturalist interpretation of the animal, which is of course in the linked post. I recommend checking that out; maybe it's just because I'm the kind of huge nerd that I am, but I think these are great.

@treesurface (link to post here) gives us a Holghras that they describe as a cross between a bird of prey and a bird of paradise, which I think is a pretty good idea that fits both the aggressive behavior and the mating behavior described in the entry. I enjoy the fact that multiple artists have decided this bird Likes Big Tailfeathers (and it does lie, but about different things).

@ashfly (link to post here) gives us this picture of a juvenile Holghras holding up its clump of dirt. They also indicate that they have an idea of what it is, which I really hope they'll share now that it's posted and the bird's out of the bag, because I was 100% certain nobody would guess this one. The fuzzy bird is cute, of course, and the rainbow legs are really striking. (Pride legs, perhaps?) I also like that it's clearly looking over at the "camera" to see if we're buying it.

... hm. Yeah, some absolute bastard apparently cut out a bunch of the miniatures in this manuscript at one point. Luckily, we have the Ashmole Bestiary over at the Bodleian Library, which is extremely similar, so we can get an idea of the image that was here:

I'm going to assume the choice of coloration was up to the individual artist and the missing Aberdeen illustration was also brown, because the Ashmole version of the egg-stealer also has the more colorful pattern:

Anyway, in case you haven't recognized it from these helpful and very accurate images, this is the partridge. Now you know what's going on in those pear trees.

I don't actually have anything else to add about that. I was frankly a little surprised there was even an entry for "partridge".

So... Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy. My recent obsession. Let's go! I'll try to do it without significant spoilers.

Carefull, long post under the cut!

First of All. Amadeuses Kids! They grew up! UWU. They're such cute little young fireball casters. Omg, that's almost like watching your nephews grow, they feel so much like a family...

That game series has been with me since I was a child and as I remember Trine (part 1) was my first (real) videogame! And now when I play Trine 5 it cures my soul so much, right when I needed it. It's like... Has a Tolkien vibe for me. I mean in the sense that It's too fairy tail outside, it may look childish, but it has layers! I really like the plot, it hit me right in the heart and made me reflect. And I was struggling with dark thoughts on Future and Trine's perspective on the global world's problems made me smile and hope for the best... Really thank you, trine team, you're awesome :D Where there's people who share your concerns and put it in the work of art like that and make witty satire on it that's precious. I have returned some of my faith in humanity now. 

Well, maybe some people may not see what I saw or just won't feel such weight, cause my recent experience made me stump on it, so well I need to say that plot in general... Dramatic. I was impressed How it manages to balance at the edge of magical fairy tail and life drama (OR that's again me and my pains. Anyway...) STRONG twists and things at stake. Heroes encounter both global threat and personal challenges (all three of them, but poor wizard, he got it the most. But he's so silly old man, I'm crying) (Zoya, my girl, I love you...) (Pontius... You're just perfect, I'm proud of you, example of a real knight :D)

Character writing is amazing, they REALLY feel alive.

For example: Amadeus marries a woman after he became a hero and throughout the whole game series he mentions that, then he mentions their kids and, like i mentioned now, now we see how they grew up! And in fifth's game due to plot he misses his triplets greatly and in the forest three heroes meet a fox with three little foxes... And Amadeus is like "oh no, I'm a terrible father" 😭

And there's a lot of cute normal or giant animals in the game series, we're helping them and then they come up and help us. Such lightsome game, I can't/// Those animals... Uwu/// (Just a little detail but I wanted to mention that...)

What I like else about the narrative: humor :D For demonstration I just let Pontius to show himself:

I. Worship. Those. Artists. They are geniuses. Screenshots speak for themself, I guess.

Design, artwork and effects... No, I can't describe it in words, again, I just pray on it. So damn enchanting. I literally dream to be like those artists who work on this series. (And that's a threat) When I think of it, well, maybe THAT magic inspired me to be who I am right now...

Magic observatory where's pictures of butterflies there and there... ARE YOU DESNAN, WIZARDS???

And those just killed me. Episode in a dark place with the sudden rays of hope... I was just. Aaaah... So beautiful both by art and location's story.  Replica of the second screenshot: "It's rare that ghosts are on our side. Usually we and undead are not on good terms." What did I tell you? :D Tolkien vibe!

So who got through my post till the end... Please, please get to know those game series. I didn't mention it at all above but It's also a genius of gameplay. It's a platformer with (some) fighting and (a lot of) puzzles. Also. It's thrice (:D) fun in coop.

AND. Music. Won't say much about it either but It's a genius magical masterpiece. I guarantee you: Trine soundtrack will find its way to your playlist.

P. S. Will I do fanart on trine? Maybe... Maybe... You know, I just have that strange thing: some stories are "sacred" in my brain so I can't Just sit and draw cause I'm constantly stressed out if it turns out bad or worse: not how I imagined it. Same with Tolkien books, btw. In fandom since childhood, (if you count that, if not - from adolescents and first steps to the internet) and no single drawing. (not single real drawing at least)

But! I have Nine Parchments fanart :D

Oooh. And. I have THEM in frame. Art from my friend who gifted it to me at postcrossing some time after we played Trine 4 (and then the whole game series) together! It was such a pleasant surprise!

January 2024 Wrapup

One month down! 2024’s going to be easy, you’re going to see! We made it this far, we just have to do this again and I’m sure we’ll find a way. This month has seen a Games Done Quick event, a bunch of videos, five story piles!

Let’s get into it, looking at what you might have already seen and what you might have missed if you’re at all a fan of Things Talen makes!

This month’s Game Pile were:

Exploding Kittens, where I opine about an interface mistake in a game that’s pretty much entirely about revelling in its interface, right?

A Patreon and Channel trailer update, where I made a pair of videos for that

Puzzmo, a game that I have already stopped playing because it fails to localise to non-American spellings

A video form of my Gene Wars article, which adds some details and context about this aggressively tedious game that’s remarkably hard to play, even without Dosbox overcycling and making things die of old age

It also is the first month where, in the off weeks, Fox and I have been playing a game together – in this case, we played through Space Quest III, completing the trilogy. There are, after all, never any other Space Quest games, and you can go check those out over on Youtube (part 1, part 2).

While Story Pile articles covered:

The Sopranos, a TV series that took a lot of time to watch and was worth it and I immediately stopped caring about once I was done watching it,

Godzilla vs Megalon, a charming hokey 70s piece of kids’ action entertainment

Appare-Ranman!!, an anime about going fast that fails when it comes to races

The Traitor Baru Cormorant, a dense book about economics where some betrayal happens,

Afterschool Dice Club, an anime about board games, no really, actually about board games.

But that’s not all I wrote about this month that you can read, with your eyes! I wrote about how much I missed having the physical ritual of a bullet journal. You know, for the nine days I didn’t have it, which is weird because it’s not like I was doing detailed journalling at the end of December.

I wrote about the Speed stat in Pokemon games, and how it currently works. This article actually started as an introduction to the competitive idea of ‘speed tiers’ and how things could be generally positioned against one another. Turns out that no, just explaining how Speed works took a thousand damn words. I thought about ‘hey, who’s the fastest Transformer‘ and found the best answer I could have for that was absolutely nonsense and completely at odds with how Transformers presents that. Keeping with the theme of ‘speed’ during GDQ I wrote about the Speed of Communication and ways to categorise and consider that in your worldbuilding.

I talked about the Minotaur, the Iron Hearts, and the 404 Not Found of Cobrin’Seil, cultures that matter and need to be available for players, but need to also have a material presence in the world that makes them matter. 3rd Edition D&D had some real weird rules corners, and one of them was The Monk, and hey, hey now, I am talking about 3rd edition. You know, the real actual 3rd edition, the 3rd edition before 3.5 that everyone likes to pretend was just part of the same continuity. Anyway, monks were bad. And weird, and they didn’t have game language to describe their mechanical needs.

I also tried to confront the way that Atheism gets treated as a special kind of social evil which just happens to be in contest with someone claiming absolute knowledge of the runner of the whole universe, but we’re the smug ones. Also just vented about how much Mike Winger sucks ass, truly besmirching the noble name of Internet Weirdo Dudes Surnamed Winger, RIP to a real one.

For Magic: The Gathering content, I inspected 2023’s mechanics and what I want to do with them, along with my articles reflecting on 2023’s daily cards and announcing the plan for 2024’s daily cards — the story of Vox Maxima.

And what else has happened this month, what do I have in terms of diary? Well, truth be told, I don’t have a good answer to that right now because as I write this it’s the twelfth of the month. January is a weird month, lots of stuff gets done because the year is now open in front of me, and as a result, I get a lot of stuff in the queue. I also had a subtheme for this month, with GDQ providing Speed Week.

What I do know about this month though, what I know about my diary, is that I’ve been working on things that need work. How much faster can I get things done? How can I make sure I’m always working? And …

At this point…

I’ve done it. I’ve done what I can so far, and I am going to get better.

I wanted to have Lysen Co out by now. I wanted to have Cancon stuff done, too! But money makes a lot of things in that space not stuff I can idly play around with, which is frustrating. This is a point where I’m really grateful for my Patreon – and yes, that does make me worry that I’m going to be trying hard to be crowd pleasing. I guess what I’m saying is if you say ‘I like this’ you might find me overproduce that because I want you to have more of it.

Got my booster shot. Jab in the arm. No reactions, no notes, incredibly boring. Actually no, my shoulder hurts a little bit which I think might be because a guy in a coat stuck a thin piece of metal into it so they could stuff some MRNA shedding nanomachines into my bloodstream so Bill Gates could track me. Mentioning that because it should be a thing people remember to do, and I did it. Easy Feel Good Points for me, since I don’t have any meaningful reactions and they could be sticking maple syrup in me for all I know. I’m genuinely at the point where I think I might be nonsymptomatic, and Fox might be too, and I may have contracted and shared Covid a hundred times and never noticed it because the canary in my personal coal mine is… immune… to… coal? Anyway.

I spend some time this month reading Michel Foucault, right at the source, and lemme tell you that guy’s work is dense. He’s got this really nuggety attitude of words, where there’s very little use of example and demonstration – there’s these heavy laden words that get explained, then he’ll drop all four of the ones he’s been explaining in a sentence and moving on. It means there’s a lot of back tracking and like ‘hey, is this what I think it means?’ It’s a really interesting experience of spending four hours with a twenty-two page essay and realising that yeah, I have these great ideas and I can explain them but it’s translated to… two hundred? words on the page.

There’s also been some delving into Roland Barthes, and back to Johan Huizinga, because Magic Circle theory has become more important to my demonstration of why I’m not invested in Magic Circle theory. Got to demonstrate that expertise.

It was CanCon month! I didn’t make a post about CanCon specifically, because the schedule filled up and that’s just how things go. CanCon meant three days away from my normal computer, and you know what that meant? When the Gene Wars video went up it went up with an audio error and I had to wait two days to fix it! Oh well, I’m sure we all had a laugh about it. I unlisted that video and by the time this goes up it should be fixed. And a new video should be a few days away. Shh~.

Anyway. CanCon was great! Nothing terrible happened and I’m definitely not writing this on night 2 of 3 thinking ‘well nothing bad is going to happen tomorrow!’

General description:

Describing Klee really is a challenge in itself.

He is both, the walking definition of "so painfully average you forget it exists", but also one of the weirdest individuals you could ever encounter.

He loves every aspect of nature and might just be the most outdoorsy Ignihyde student the school has ever seen. His magic reservoir however is pretty limited, so he is acquainted with various technomantic devices to compensate for that.

Other than that, he does have the nerdy, introverted mindset of an Ignihyde... And also about the popularity of that.

Before NRC, Klee didn't really have any friends, the last one going back to right before elementary school. The other kids have always avoided him, if not laughed about him behind his back. He wasn't actively bullied, but no-one wanted to have anything to do with his weirdness. He seemed unapproachable, incomprehensible, simply too different.

Klee never really cared, he considered them mean and, well, who wants to be friends with meanies anyway?

To be fair though, they had a point, although he didn't know of it himself. Klee's way of communicating is... extraordinary, to say the least. His written speech is a work of art, with him being a writer. However anything that comes out of his mouth is just... off. Not rude, not weird in language, just ... always a bit different from what you'd expect a person to behave. Furthermore, he isn't the most expressive one, seemingly daydreaming most of the time. This also has to do with his unique magic, which I will elaborate in a future post. He mostly smiles when looking at cute animals, colourful fungi or when thinking of the love of his life, Jade Leech.

He has a big heart, however, and once he becomes friends with the Ramshackle residents, as well as some other classmates, he holds them dearer than anything else in his life. He's always there to lend a hand, or share a piece of his vast common and academic knowledge.

My favorite shows/movies/comics of 2023!!

What a year! I graduated from college, made a few animated shorts I’m really proud of, and got my first proper internships in the industry! Not to mention a ton of great movies, shows, comics, etc came out- so I decided to use this as a chance to recommend some of my favorites to you if you’ve been looking for something new to check out!

Favorite Movie: Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3

Summary: The third and final entry in the series- and it’s not often you get a proper conclusion in superhero franchises, so that’s already a great sign! If you want to get into the series I’d highly recommend it- and if the whole MCU is too daunting for you, then just watching it in the below order should still suffice:

Guardians of the Galaxy > Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 > Avengers Infinity War > Avengers Endgame> The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special > Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3

Pros: This isn’t much of a surprise if you’ve followed my blog- I absolutely ADORE this series- The combination of both amazing practical and CGI effects. The story full of creative action sequences and sweet found family bonding moments. The well-rounded characters, who grow beyond the usual stereotypes people would assume of them, learning how to process and overcome their trauma. The amazing soundtrack and score. The comedy combined with the surprising dark and emotional moments and characters. And the fact that this was a beautiful conclusion to the story instead of just dragging it out into endless status quo or replacing the main cast 1:1 like other superhero stories makes it an added benefit! My eternal thanks and congratulations to writer-director James Gunn, whom I wish all the best to in his future at DC!

Cons: I really can’t think of anything major! Maybe just that instead of being able to marathon all 3 Guardians movies in a row, you have to watch two Avengers movies in between with their own storylines?

Favorite Western Cartoon(s): My Adventures with Superman

Summary: As I follow James Gunn over to DC I’ve decided to brush up on some DC characters for the first time in a while! A fresh anime-styled look at Superman’s first weeks working at The Daily Planet with a slightly new take on his crush Lois and best friend Jimmy!

Pros: The art style and animation are gorgeous, knowing almost exactly what good influences to take from anime! The new designs and personalities for Lois and Jimmy are fun, and most importantly- Clark Kent aka Superman’s portrayal is fantastic- just the right balance of heroic, kind, and awkward in a way that’s cute but not annoying.

Cons: You may have heard this complaint go around, but I have to echo what some of the fanbase when I agree that most of the villains in this series are a big letdown. A lot of them have the same angular tech aesthetic, not many of them have creative powers, and some of their voice actors I’d even say don’t fit them at all. And a certain pair of them who do have creative designs and likable personalities aren’t even villains in this series despite being villains in the comics and other series. Hopefully this gets amended in season 2, which I’m still excited for!

Honorable mention goes to Hilda!

So far, I’ve just watched the first 2 seasons and the movie but here’s what I have to say!

Summary: A cozy and cute kids cartoon that beautifully captures the spirit of a magical Scandinavian adventure! I put off watching this for years and finally got around to it- it really is as great as everyone says! Though looking at how long the hiatuses were between seasons, I’m actually glad I took this long to start watching- I don’t think I could have survived the wait, haha.

Pros: The art style and animation are GORGEOUS- some of the best ever! The voice acting is great and adorable (It blows my mind that I watched Bella Ramsey as Hilda in this and as Ellie in The Last of Us- the two characters are like night and day, haha) The tone is really sweet and cute while still having enough adventure and hints of good comedy to not make it feel too slow-paced. It may not be my favorite animated show ever, but I can 100% understand if other people want to rank it as their #1!

Cons: I don’t know if anyone will agree with me, but I felt Season 2 was a bit predictable? I still loved the season, don’t get me wrong, but there were moments where they cut from the adventure to focus on two characters disagreeing and it wasn’t really as tense as the show wanted it to feel, because you’d know how things would get resolved. It’s forgivable for a kids show, but it just stands out because of how mature all the other plot points and the tone of the series is overall.

Favorite Anime: Tomo-Chan is a Girl!

Summary: Tomo Aizawa tries to win over her crush and childhood friend Jun, who just sees her as “one of the bros”. To do that, her gloomy friend Misuzu suggests that Tomo act girlier. But as the series goes on and we learn the characters’ backstories, it becomes obvious that things aren’t so simple and gendered (thankfully!)

Pros: Despite starting off on pretty standard shenanigans, I love how much respect is given to both leads in this romance! Usually most love interests in media are just treated as objects to be won regardless of gender, but thankfully the friendship between Tomo and Jun here is treated with a surprising amount of respect and care! Plus if you prefer dubs, this show has a fantastic one! And the supporting cast of Misuzu and Carol are some of the most iconic and hilarious best friend characters in anime ever!

Cons: If you’re not a fan of typical anime romcom shenanigans then this may not be for you- though I will say, like many shows it does get better after Episode 2 (the big reveal at the end should hopefully get you on board!) Also, the subplot for the comic relief character Carol has some problematic undertones which are already dialed down from how they were in the manga- though it’s a pretty minor subplot so it shouldn’t be too bad in my opinion!

Sidenote: I know Frieren is one of the best anime ever made, and I will probably check it out when the season wraps up next year!

Favorite Western Comics: Superman Smashes the Klan!

Summary: More Superman! A period piece about two American-Chinese immigrant siblings trying to fit in their new neighborhood, and Superman trying to protect them from the KKK while struggling with his own heritage as an immigrant.

Pros: I don’t normally like western comic art styles, but this was drawn by GuriHiru (the group who does the ATLA comics) and their style is one of my favorites ever! A nice, self-contained graphic novel, so you don’t have to worry about reading 1000 other side series! This version of Superman and his supporting cast is even more enjoyable than the version in My Adventures with Superman in my opinion- just as much focus on kindness and real heroism! And this has some of the best Asian representation I’ve seen in a long, long, time- actually focusing on how hard it can be for anyone of any heritage to adjust to a new neighborhood and prejudices, instead of how most other Asian-American movies and cartoons these days are like “My parents abuse me but that’s a quirky part of my culture so I should be happy about it!”

Cons: I can’t really think of any! This is an amazing short graphic novel- definitely buy it and read it!

Honorable mention goes to Hooky!

Summary: Magical twins Dorian and Dani find out they have an important and terrifying magical destiny, and in their quest to survive their world and defy fate, they make some great new friends and allies along the way!

Pros: A wonderful and cute art style, great story full of emotional highs and lows, characters with lots of depth and development, and very well-tailored worldbuilding that makes the world feel alive but not too crowded. The stars of the show, Dorian and Danielle, have a great and believable sibling bond, and you get really attached to how their stories progress over the course of the story. I will also add that the endings of each of the three books are some of the most powerful I’ve ever seen!

Cons: This was a webtoon at first, so that may be why the pacing is REALLY fast. Even the slower chapters feel like they move really quickly and are full of dialogue- not a lot of room for slow atmospheric panels. Also this is a con for me but maybe not for others- there are a LOT of romantic subplots in this. Not than any of them are poorly-written, but when they all have to compete with each other and the main plot, it makes the crowded pacing feel even more rough. Also the plot in the third book feels like it’s trying to get to the resolution even faster, which may be a let down from the amazing ending of book 2.

Favorite Live-action Series: The Last of Us

Summary: A zombie apocalypse series about people getting taken over by Cordyceps fungus! Hardened smuggler Joel (Pedro Pascal) has to escort angry teen Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across America on a dangerous mission.

Pros: An amazing adaptation of the games, adding even more intense action and mature themes than before! Gorgeous visuals, superb acting and great pacing! And if it’s your jam, there’s even more well-written LGBT storylines than there were in the games! Not just one of the best live action shows or shows of 2023, but one of the best shows of all time!

Cons: Going to echo another common critique- I don’t mind that there aren’t as many infected in the show compared to the games- for the first 6 episodes or so I think it’s just fine! But when the last 5 episodes of the show don’t have a single infected at all in the present day (there’s like 2 in flashbacks) when it’s a big theme that ties into the stakes of the ending, that’s actually a big problem.

Honorable mention to Prehistoric Planet!

Pros: One of THE BEST prehistoric documentaries of all time! With gorgeous CGI depictions of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals, and portraying them as real animals, not just man-eating monsters! You will grow attached to the dinosaurs as characters, not just creatures. Actual respect for prehistory is so hard to come by in media, so I value it way more than live-action dramas or even most cartoons!

Cons: All episodes take place in the same time period- essentially the last few years of the dinosaurs in the late Cretaceous. Which means we miss out on a lot of other eras and animals. On top of that, the episodes are composed of many short 3-minute bits rather than full storylines like Walking With Dinosaurs, which is a bit of a letdown.

Favorite Manga Lightning Round!

Somehow, my favorite three manga that I’ve discovered this year are all romcoms!

#1: Pseudo Harem (Completed!)

Despite the name, this is an adorable and wholesome series about a stagehand and an actress in a highschool drama club- they’re friends who pretend to be in all kinds of tropey relationships for fun, and these adorable interactions lead to a really sweet romance between them! Like all good romances, we get to see the quirks and perspectives of both parties! And what’s more it’s even getting an anime adaptation next year!!

#2:  Kimi wa Yakamashi Tojite yo Kuchi o! (You Talk Too Much, So Just Shut It Already!) (Ongoing at 38+ biweekly chapters)

The story of a deaf girl and the extremely cheerful and stupid boy who tries to befriend her! It’s fantastic representation for the deaf community (even having some small sign language lessons in chapters!) Unlike many manga where the nonverbal girl is just a shy cute thing to be pined after, we get to hear the inner monologue of our female lead Tsukino and see her perspective on things as THE protagonist and not just the love interest. The side characters are also hilarious, the story takes some surprisingly wacky turns for your average high school romcom (name another meetcute that involves a feral Komodo dragon, I dare you) and the comedy is surprisingly witty and fanservice-free- very much a style rarely seen in manga and really up my alley!

#3: Mietemasu yo! Aizawa-san (I See You, Aizawa-san!) (Ongoing at 14+ monthly chapters)

You might be surprised to see a Yuri (WLW) romance series on this list, but I’d say I’m more surprised that not more people are talking about this compared to the usual generic Tsundere x Genki Girl stories that dominate this site year-round for some reason.

This series is about an emo highschool girl named Michi who has been plagued by visions of ghosts her whole life. When she finds out her classmate Aizawa who passed recently was an idol, Michi simultaneously becomes a diehard fangirl of Aizawa, but also tries her best to ignore the adorable and goofy ghost of Aizawa because of Michi’s longtime fear of ghosts (honestly one of the best metaphors for gay panic I’ve seen).

I think the reasons I prefer this over most shoujo manga are as follows- First, the art style has a good usage of shading and black colors and not just the usual light airbrushing that is in most of them. Secondly, it’s got a good mix of the typical pretty and detailed shoujo art but also cute silly chibis in comedic moments (very good comedy I might add!). And thirdly, there’s a cool fantasy element that ties into the romance rather than fighting for screentime with it (the ghosts and such)! There also seems to be a deeper mystery to the plot but I don’t think it’ll be addressed anytime soon, which is fine! (Sidenote this isn’t the first WLW series I’ve watched but it might just be my favorite even after just 14 chapters!)

The only con I’d give this series is that it still has one shoujo trope I dislike- where almost all the female characters have to be the same kind of pretty. Thankfully our lead Michi is spared of this and looks like the stressed emo she should be, but there’s a “dumb jock” character later on who looks just as elegant and feminine as the other girls even though the story implies she looks tougher than most, haha.

Got any fun Fates headcannons you’d care to share?

-Okay so Elise is canonically great at violin and Corrin is also noted to be a good piano player, so I HC that the Nohr siblings are all trained in some kind of instrument. Xander's good at bagpipes, but he saw Leo being good at bagpipes so he switched to cello. Camilla is great at any kind of percussion, cuz she gets to whack things and they make pretty noises.

-On the flipside, Sakura is the only one in the Hoshido fam who has any musical talent with her koto. The rest of the sibs cheer her on, Ryoma especially (he tried the koto once and the dividers in the palace got broken)

-Camilla dotes on her undead wyvern when she can. She got a baby wyvern as a gift from Garon when he was still good, but it killed by one of the other concubines or their kids. Her mom said if she "took care" of a certain rival within a deadline, she'd get the best sorcerers to revive her dragon friend. And she did it! Love that for her.

-Takumi hates royal gatherings, but partly why is because he has a picky aesthetic sense and the formal outfits were never his thing. That's why he's so appreciative of Oboro's talent. He's canonically a big bookworm, so I think he'd write some amazing poetry, too.

-Niles likes gazing at the full moon so much because it's something that can get dark and bleak but start to shine and be "full of light" again, something he finds beauty and comfort in.

-Rhajat's near death experience which changed her personality changed it in a way where she has an obsession with life and death, hence her lines about reincarnation in the JP version, devoting life and time to someone, creating Faceless as opposed to practicing Hoshidan magic, and her surprising knack for caring for plants (showing that she's good at supporting life's growth) in her support with her mom

-The doors in Nohr's castle had to be resized after Xander hit his growth spurt because he kept hitting his forhead on the top of the doorframe

-All of the ninjas can knit and sew because they're great with their hands, but Saizo doesn't do it anymore because he sees it as frivolous (Kaze still has a blanket his brother knitted for him when he was young)

-Ryoma grew his hair out because he wanted to emulate his father, but also because a baby Sakura once tried to climb it and he broke down in tears from how cute it was (Shiro eventually did the same thing as a baby)

-The scar Benny has on his face is one he got protecting endangered animals from poachers.

-Orochi totally told Kagero the story where Saizo wet himself from fear of the fortune she told him, and she purposefully told it when they were dating because Orochi is just built like that

-The Hoshidan army has a secret fight club, and one time Hinoka entered to get a designer pegasus saddle that was stolen from a merchant. She proceeded to clobber all of the contestants in her bracket. She never returned the saddle.

-Leo once used Brynhildr to grow other fruits and vegetables for a time, but he now only grows tomatoes cuz he got tired of all the puns that Corrin made ("heard anything through the grapevine?" "berry nice shrub you made, Leo" "Leo's my special spuddy buddy") and thanks the gods every day that he hasn't said "Toma-tome" yet (Corrin himself has forgotten this entirely in his shift to making fun of the backwards clothes)

-Corrin had successfully surprise attacked Xander with a love tackle once when he was little (and he has also forgotten about this), and Xander has held a secret grudge ever since and has gotten great at sneaking up on Corrin-despite being a huge motherfucker-just so he can scare his little brother all the time

13.) how long have you been working on this project? what has changed from the outset?

I’m going to answer for the anthea ocverse bc ive had it waaaay longer. I’ve had it since literally highschool! I must have been like 16 if not younger when I first conceptualized of it. I think it’s gone through a bunch of different changes since then.

(I'm about to type a lot for this one feel free to just skim lol)

When I FIRST thought of it though it was more of a fantasy creature highschool situation. I sort of opted out of that though because, like, I didn’t want it to be too “monster high” I guess? A bunch of characters were different fantasy races though, like, protea was an emo fairy who couldn’t fly (The idea being that joy powered the flight lol) but obvs that was scrapped. And now she is a cute happy potion seller :p

There were other changes like that too but I can’t remember them all…. I think at some point it was also more of a “secret wizard world” situation but I felt like that was also overdone. Amary literally went from average girl to princess lmao

For where it is now it’s more or less been the same as just a school in a fantasy world… There are some mild changes I’ve made here and there. At some point I wanna do my THIRD redesign for the main cast lol. I’ve been drawing eyes in a slightly different way recently (Including the irises which are big parts of the designs) so I already drew little concepts for new eye designs, but they more or less have the same spirit!

I think that when I first made the world I was, like, around the same age as the kids in the school. And that’s all well and good, but I think now as an adult I actually wanna divert the story into being more critical of their entire system rather than just fun magic stuff (that will still be there too). I always had a big theme about the concept of “heirship” in there (familial expectations and passed down roles and such, that’s partly why so many characters are nobility) but I think in order to actually hammer the point home I really do have to point out the flaws in the bigger picture of their world. That was always something that was THERE (again see the nobility and their Issues… Even the main antagonists are a result of that) but I think I’ve made the school itself too much of an exemption of it when in reality I think I should also make it part of the problem. School system critique time baby

21.) you have been given unlimited funds to make your story idea a reality. what are you sparing no expenses for?

If I had unlimited money I would absolutely make this an awesome animated project and i would pay all the animators sooooo much to make it as awesome looking as possible. I don’t just mean smooth animation but bombastic awesome animation with all kinds of different techniques and with as much flare as possible. AskTideTheGastrodon: My first askblog ever(now rebooted) It is based off of the Seven Deadly Sins! A cliche genre I know, but as a kid who was always surrounded by religion without consent.. I've always had a soft spot for the genre! More specifically, the blog is actually based on a webcomic I tried to start when I was young... but turned it into Pokemon! Draws a lot of inspiration from biblical theories and themes and some Greek God nonsense. As well as some Slice of Life aspects for comfort!

Tales-from-kirkland: My second askblog ever haha. Obviously takes a lot of inspiration from the Pirates of the Caribbean series.. but pirate lore and legends in general!! Pirate and general ocean lore is SO FULL of myths and legends and stories!! I adore the horror and mystical aspects that the ocean can give to us. Plus I just... genuinely love the ocean and all it can hold and tell.... I'm a simp for the ocean don't @ me.

Ask-Eden: Listen. I've been in the community since 2016. I am not immune to Mew blogs (also looking at you Skins lol). So I suppose PokeAsk as a whole was inspiration for it?? But also more greek god nonsense as a whole. But I guess the true "inspiration behind it"... I watched a scene of a show with Michael Cera being awkward and I went... what if god was like that. Hence, Eden. Also the series Bee and Puppycat! It's entire aesthetic and dimension travel and just... art style and sparkles mmmmm..,, With slight DeviantArtSparkleDog stuff mixed in as well Ask-Scrafty: Horror. Just horror as a whole. This blog is strictly me pushing every horror trope and myth into one place. Like this is purely me going BRRRR on horror and curses and myths. Granted it's not a ENTIRE horror fest... I wanted to implement a story that excuses me for slamming so many horror genres together!

Ask-Wasteland-Labs: Obvious! SCP's and such. But has a story attached that isn't based on the game. It was also me trying to step my feet more into the Anthro Pokemon scene. Everyone knows I draw scrafty anthro a lot, but other pokemon? I was more iffy on. So this blog is really helping me expand into more anthro pokemon designs. If you asked me in 2016 to draw a anthro pikachu I probably would have disintegrated.

Flake-N-Rudy: Okay so this one is a bit more serious a bit. Obviously is general it's based on PMD series. I also wanted to make a PMD blog that was about building a ruined relationship. Idk, im just edgy that way? Also me venting and displaying my old toxic habits. Because I've been both Flake and Rudy as I've mentioned. Just showing more toxic habits other than like... HEEHOO MURDER y'know? Not sure. It's just edgy venting all around haha. As well as me recycling old PMD story themes that I tried to use in the past but failed.

AskDruddigon: Originally had no concept. Just me chilling and drawing a pokemon I normally didn't. But due to a old askblog of mine being NERFED after my accidental deletion.. Rylee is based on Subnautica lore!! So the blog will have some of those elements.. But otherwise is just me having fun!! AskTauros: This blog is actually based on a song! Shelter by Porter Robinson to be specific. Not so much the music video itself which got really popular... But just? The song comforts me. It makes me think of going through troubles and coming out okay. It just comforts me and makes me think of those cliche stories of found family and coming out better in the end. Nothing more than that really. Poke-Magica: Another obvious inspiration. Madoka Magica! The art style and general story of the anime doesn't inspire me... More of the Witches and their Labyrinths and just the lore itself is what inspires me? Again it's more of a dark/horror type theme inspiring me, but mixed with cute magical girls! Ask-Skitty: There is no outside influence here. It is strictly PMD storyline. Almost directly a PMD:Explorers of Darkness kinda storyline. I made this as a comic when i was younger! It means a lot to me.. so I rebooted it as a askblog! These characters mean the world to me.

AskDuskull: Another excuse for me to mix horror in any way I can. I used to play those RPG games like TheWitchesHouse or MadFather or Ao Oni... Although I know some of the creators of those have um.. bad pasts not good people I don't support them anymore don't worry. But needless to say the style and just things about them inspired me as a kid and still kind of to this day. Although it's in a askblog format and not a RPG haha.

BUT HONESTLY I draw inspiration through SO MANY things. Also random things. I've literally designed OCs based off of pair of socks I saw once. My inspiration is random. I could talk more but aaaaa I've talked so much already I do apologize!

THE FLOWER MOVEMENT TAROT

I wanted to give this deck a shout out as well. The art is absolutely gorgeous; so gorgeous that I think it actually suffers from its small card size. The cards are also tall and thin, which, combined with their small size, can make shuffling awkward. Finally, the box they come in is MUCH larger than the cards themselves, which hurts its portability. This deck is also from China and its LWB is entirely in Chinese. Otherwise, this deck is fantastic quality! Definitely recommend if you can find a copy!

CLOAK MAJOR ARCANA

I have to say, this deck isn't really my style, but when I heard @markiplier's Cloak brand was putting out some tarot cards, I had to take a look. These cards feel both mystical and sometimes humorous - heh get it? Because they're skeletons? *Badum-tss* The gold guilding on both sides is also a wonderful touch that really makes this deck stand out.

This is the collector's version of the deck which features beautiful holographic silver guilding on the card edges. I cannot praise this deck's art enough. The artist cited Japanese illustration as a major inspiration for the art of The Monsoon Tarot, and I wouldn't be surprised if Studio Ghibli was a huge component of that. There are so many cards with that same charm Ghibli is known for, with a dreamlike twist and childlike wonder. It's great for beginners, but there are tiny details that experienced readers will appreciate. My second favorite deck purchased this year!

THE ROMAN TAROT

This deck just scratches all the right places for me. I'm more into Religio Romana (but I also do some Hellenic practices as well). It also hits some of the things I really love learning about when it comes to Roman history, #1 of which is Pompeii and Vesuvius (featured on this deck's version of the tower, The Volcano). It's also just a neat look into both Roman religion and everyday life. The art is also really cool. Each card's illustration was a physical painting before it was a card, and the colors reflect the pigments available to painters in Ancient Rome.

alright since one person (@coffeelovinggayidiot) asked for it i will now talk about a group of ocs i will probably never do anything specific with but who i really love and never really talk about

So at the center of the story we have Mike and Sprout. Mike is a 15 year old trans guy who loves music more than anything, is going through a bit of a depressive episode mostly from school and being a bit of a social outcast and is generally not the most pleasant person to be around at the beginning at least. For contrast we have Sprout who's a little elf guy who got transported here from his little town in the middle of some magical forest mysteriously. He is very caring and simple and wholesome and basically the embodiment of a cozy children's book. That's really my best way of describing him. Naturally he drives Mike crazy but they do end up forming a deep bond eventually.

Most of the "story" (aka the part i focus on the least I'm a character centric person) really just focuses on trying to get Sprout home which is hard because he himself doesn't exactly remember how he got here (there was a storm on the day he was transported but he knows that couldn't have been it and his memories are really foggy) I also kind of want to add an additional mystery but I don't know how seriously I want to focus on this story because I prefer it just being a fun thing for myself. I might add it one day.

Anyways my real favorite part is the side characters. We have:

-Dominic (Dom for short), who's Mike's best friend/kind of crush. he's openly gay but Mike still doesn't think he has any chance with him because he's kind of a popular kid while Mike is a loser (evne though they constantly hang out). he's a bit of a himbo, and definitely a dork. He's really kind and makes friends easily. He plays basketball and takes it very seriously. He doesn't believe in cringe culture, he LOVES hallmark christmas movies for some reason. and bad 80s movies. actually 80s everything

-Irene, Mike's childhood friend. She wants to be cool and mysterious but is mostly just the most chaotic person ever. she smokes weed in her room and her mom doesn't realize somehow. she's an absolute troublemaker. her most important characteristic though is that she loves painting and created an oc named Luna who she just thinks of as the moon's human form. who's a beautiful girl. like really beautiful. like really really beautiful. like r- yup she fell in love with her oc. she totally owns it though, so much so her she her online alias is Pygmalia after the greek myth of the sculptor who fell in love with his own sculpture. Yeah she's one of the characters i really had fun creating. she's a lesbian if i didn't make that obvious by now. She does end up having a real human crush too also.

-Kitty, Mike's old classmate and other crush. They're autistic and their special interest is a fictional anime I made up for this story which is basically about a bunch of students who have fruit names for some reaos who go to space and it has about 6 seasons if i remember right and they end up saving the universe with the power of gay. lots of She-ra and Toh vibes. probably voltron too i never watched that one. Kitty's favorite character is Apricot who other than sharing a name with another character I made and also having a suspiciously similar design to said character, starts off as a villain but ends up falling in love with the main character. i ended up just infodumping about this anime. but i feel like that's on brand for an autistic character like if i was a fictional character I would want someone to just end up talking about falsettos instead of describing me. anyways they're generally kind if a scaredy cat and love cute things a lot and have a lot of plushies. but they do have a darker side. They also only watch anime dubbed because they have dyslexia so they can't read subtitles well although they started learning japanese because that's the power of hyperfixating. Oh and they have an oc for said anime.

-Ally, Kitty's and Dom's mutual friend and later Mike's friend through them. She's the mom friend, she has 3 younger siblings so that makes sense honestly. Her parents are divorced, she prefers being at her dad's place who owns an animal hospital near a forest with a lot of foxes. her favorite animals are foxes. along with cats. she has a cat for herself. she also loves ice skating. her ex best friend betrayed her for the popular girls which is a sour topic for her so she doesn't like people bringing it up too much.

-Seth, Irene's best friend and kind of crush. xe's a.. complicated person. xe can be intimidating at first glance with the amount of tattoos and piercings xe has. xe's a tattoo artist actually. not a drug dealer despite what people assume. xe ran away from home nrc of unsupportive parents but xe misses xir little sister and sometimes writes to her. xe has a secret dream of starting a rock band. xe's generally really introverted and doesn't like to talk a lot which adds to xir mysteriousness. oh and xe LOVES snakes a lot. because of xir gender fuckery xe says a lot that anyone of any gender can be attracted to xem but it does make them queer by default.

-and finally Jordan. Jordan is. he's a bully and a jerk and a homophobe. until he realizes he's bisexual. he has a bit of an obsession with comic books specifically one gay superhero book. which he refuses to admit publicly. and of course he starts to crush on Seth around this time. So definitely a complicated character.

I dunno if I asked or remember asking that question, but anyway, what is your overall thoughts of Wicked World, if you watch all the episodes?

I don't recall you asking either, really, so....

Overall thoughts: it was meh. I did manage to like, watch all of season one and it was really hard to do cause the plot clearly struggled to find what it wanted to do, let alone the fact that some of the characters just felt weirdly written, Evie being the one that comes to mind but Audrey also in some sense and could they make their mind up with Lonnie already?? Girly girl in first film, into ROAR in D2 and hip hop in wicked world???? Did no one know what they were doing with Lonnie at this point in Descendants or-

And the animation....look, its not as bad as Addison’s Moonlight Mystery, that one is meme material. But like, you can tell where the CGI struggled with the hair movements and such and even somehow lightwashed Audrey’s skin??? Apparently they fixed this in S2 but like???? How???  And the outfits....look, a large majority of them are fine...given they mostly wear outfits from the first Descendants, so...but BEN?! WHAT DID THEY DO TO HIM?! Maybe this is why we don’t get Ben wearing shit beyond his king outfits: because when Descendants tries, they somehow give him two different patterned outfits at the same time and different colors for some reason. And you can tell the CGI budget was small as shit...because characters like Chad and Doug are missing, hence why you don’t see Evie and Doug dance with each other in S1 finale and have a weird joke as a result with Evie dancing with the princess crown. 

And for the characters we got introduced to....Freddie’s pretty cool, kinda funny with China Anne McClain voicing her in S1, but she’s a pretty cool daughter of Facilier at least, but damn, even if this Mal is more likeable then films Mal, Mal still a bitch about bringing Freddie off the Isle.  And Ally and Jordon....they okay. Like, Jordon’s name is a little weird as we can’t tell where exactly the team got this name for a character whose dad was from Agrabah. But like, she’s okay at least I guess, but I’m mixed on Ally: one hand, design is cute and I do like how they TRIED to make her a lil wonderland like, but on other hand: god could her quick to accuse moments in S1 get annoying... And CJ is probably the biggest mood of S1: appearing for maybe one episode and then fucking off afterwards. A mood, I tell you. Tho outside of that, she’s a good character...even if they just didn’t use her very well in the end. 

I didn’t really watch S2 per-say, maybe a couple of eps but I honestly lost interest after S1. But I will say from what I watch: meh on the season. At least it had a plot I guess this time...even if the jewels existence is confusing to me because....you telling me the heroes have all these powers given to them, even with the discouragement of using magic, and we NEVER got to see them use the jewels again after this??? Are you KIDDING ME- and they also took the villains away from them but are now giving them finally to the VKs??? What??? HOW DOES THAT WORK- how did only Maleficent hide hers but no one else??? AND WHY WOULD SOMEONE LIKE CRUELLA HAVE ONE-  Though ngl, evil Mal was kinda cool to see and her song is a bop at least...even if her whole jewel thing is confusing as fuck still... And for the new guy who was made to be the villain...at least he had more to do this season then CJ did in S1??? But not saying much, and ngl, the crush on Mal feels like....a weird way to tie him to Mal and its never brought up again beyond that mention, not even when Mal tells Evie to distract Zevon like uh, Mal, he has a crush on YOU, not Evie, YOU do the distraction here-  And CJ just...appears randomly again in finale and I guess auradon is chill with her suddenly despite all she’s done. 

And....not surprised it didn’t get a S3, don’t even try after the mess that was D3. Though out of this, the wedding prep shorts and the zombies one....this is probably the most decent animated series’ Disney’s done so far, so...

The temptation to make Links and Zeldas and other major characters in Rune Factory vibe outfits is so so so high. I only have my own Wild and Hyrule but like... idk its more interesting than redesigning just on their designs. Just gotta work out what they all do...

Minish and Between are apprentices under Grandpa Smith. Obviously. Minish does weapons, Between does jewellery. Ravio runs the magical tat shop. Can’t decide if Legend is the wandering merchant or a witch, but either way he has Pia’s problem of if his feet get wet he becomes mermaid. I kinda hate making Hyrule the doctor but... Ray from RF2? That’s just like Hyrule with long hair so I guess he’s the doctor now. Maybe training under Flora who is more pleasantly eccentric scientist vibes. Aurora is turned into a monster and a dungeon boss RF4 style ofc. Time is the weird forest child who lives on the outskirts of the wood and nobody’s sure what he does (see: Daria), but probably not an elf and probably a kid because idk I want him young??? Wind guards the pier with his life. Spirits... oooh it’d be kinda cool if we have japanese take on european fantasy but a bit steampunk trains to access some later dungeons tbh. So he can have a train station. Warriors is the local member of the guard. He’s pulling many duties. But mostly collecting trash people leave lying about and dropping it in lost and found. Four is... God knows what the Fours are up to. Run the local store? Someone needs to run the grocery store. Wild runs the restaurant. I’m sorry dude, but you do. Twilight helps out on the MC’s farm and teaches about animal care and stuff. Sky... tricky. I guess he’s running the inn as there’s no innkeep yet which with sleepy vibes sure.

You notice only two Zeldas. I’ll work them out. But it may well be they’re a set of cousins, sisters, and half-sisters from the palace. A few have escaped to the town, but with the recent invasion they rest are in various flavours of trouble. And you, the MC who may very well be Malon because frankly I’m not sure who else it could be, was on a quest to rescue them when a magic force caused her to loose her memory, then the cute forest boy helped her out and bought her to town then was all shy and disappeared again. Or maybe Malon is actually just about because little Malon and Time is honestly very good content. In which case god only knows who the MC is maybe its all the Links applying themselves to different areas IDK I didn’t think plot *too* hard yet. For some Zelda vibes each Zelda has a fragment of the triforce of wisdom which must be reclaimed yada yada yada. Their ranking of seniority is done by which game is most recent (but will have some gaps). Flora being really low ranked was sent to the village years ago to keep an eye on its paperwork and just... Fucked off to do science experiments.

If I could reboot

Now I know reboots of classic and beloved shows of our youth are technically looked down on in certain fanbases for arguably good reasons. But here me out I’ve been thinking and pondering on something a question of which was “If I could reboot a show, what would it be? What would I change and what would I keep?, and the most important one of all how would it still feel like the original show or series and not step too far into fanfic territory?” ( and with that I mean your just doing your own thing and straying real far from the source material.)

So for what I came up with was if I could I would give the Powerpuff Girls another try. I know the 2016 version is one that is not in particularly loved especially by me & on top of that I didn’t really watch the show I just saw a couple of clips and from what I saw I didn’t really care for it. Which kind of saddens me because I loved the intro that CN released for the show when it was announced that they were brining them back. And also I love the PPG’S a whole bunch. So much so that when I found out that there was an anime version of the PPG’S I instantly wanted to watch it and luckily YouTube hade a couple of episodes uploaded and some were even dubbed which was helpful.

 And let me tell you I also loved the anime versions of these girls and the changes they made for them. I mean yeah at first when I watched it I was a little taken aback with what they have changed but to me they weren't that jarring. I liked how they weren’t really sisters and how they became a cute friends, I liked that they went the route of them being “magical girls” and transforming into the hero selves. On top of it all to me at least it still felt like it was the Powerpuff girls, nothing was too different that would have me to dislike or hate it. 

But what where here to talk about is what I would do if I was to revive this show. What I would do is combine the original Powerpuff Girls & Powerpuff Girls Z. Keep the 60s modern feel for setting and have the characters designs simple but close to an anime artstyle. Like for example Magical DoReMi’s style or say Studio Triggers style. Have the backgrounds in watercolor like in Sailor Moon or any old studio Ghibli movie. For concept we can take form PPGZ by having the girls 1) not be related. 2) have them hit by piece of an asteroid that landed near Townsville. 3) have the Professor be their gradian for helping them with their powers. 4) keep magical girls aspect of the show. What to take from the original PPG would be 1) their names. 2) their Villans. 3) setting ex: Townsville, USA. 4) Characters in general. 5) the girls personalities. 6) professor being single & a scientist. 

What would I add would have to be 1) I would add some characters from the ‘16 reboot. only because I feel like they could be better characters if written and handled well. For ex. Sapna  or even Bliss ( the one many didn’t like because of how she felt like a character the art directors kids made and forced the team and working staff to write a story about her and put her in the show.) But like I said she could be interesting if handled better. For me she is another super who works for Dick Hardly who works as an agent or sponsor for hero's in Townsville. 2) some characters from PPGZ.  3)  an monster island for where the monsters live not to far from the city. 4) other hero’s that were in the old show maybe some from the 2016 show (maybe) 5) an agency that sponsor's hero’s 

For the most part that's what I have in mind I might post some drawings that I have been working on. As well as more on this concept maybe get into more detail, but for now that’s it. If anyone has any suggestions or wants to answer the question of what they would reboot I would like to hear it.
