Eight favourite films!

As tagged by @onigiri-dorkk, let me begin this amazing challenge! I'm only 28, and sadly I fall asleep with almost every movie I see, so my favourite movies are the ones that: 1) Keep me on edge, 2) Aren't too long, 3) Animation, because I believe those are the true evolved masterpieces from Cinema (and often musicals too).

I also tend to forget films a lot, so maybe here I feature some of the films that I have lastly seen and loved!

When I watch films, I tend to focus on the narrative (not the plot so much, but how it's done), the graphics (I... don't like... SFX...) and the portrayal of themes or leitmotivs throughout.

In no particular order, here we go!

HERCULES: This is SUCH AN UNDERRATED classic. The heroes story goes from point A to point B in a flowing script, full of jabs and references to the modern viewer ("somebody please call IX-I-I!" "Would you like a Solex?"). Graphically, the redundance of the clouds in all human forms (the biceps of Hercules, the hair of Megara, Hades' chin...) offers just an aesthetic, cohesive landscape. And don't let me started on the music... I can't believe how this movie flopped so bad with such MASTERPIECES! There is no one miss, not one.

TANGLED: Oh, my god, talk about underrated masterpieces again. Tangled features what I like the most about animation films: magic feelings (the bit with the lanters? Beautiful), great animation (Mother knows best! And the I have a dream sequence. Also when the water comes through!). And it features one of the least toxic relationships I have seen, with two characters struggling to be themselves and feeling guilt all over. An amazing masterpiece.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL (I would say HSM 3 would be my favourite, but they are all). In an age where the good ones where the blondes, it was so refreshing to see Gabriella Montez, a brainy student... a brainy, HISPANIC, DAUGTHER OF A SINGLE MOTHER STUDENT completely smash everyone! HSM is such an underrated films because it features what I liked about this tad of Disney first: it was inclusive naturally, without trying to force them into pieces. It spoke about toxic masculinity (Troy gets laughed at for "wearing leotards"), about toxic parents (Sharpay and Ryan), about jealousy between siblings but utter love, about the toxic separation of gangs in High School. And—AND! It has amazing music. What I like about HSM3 the most is that they completely acknowledged that they had the cast and the talent to do an incredible musical.

500 days of Summer: Ah....The love... The pain... Let me start by saying that I love films you can see over and over and get little things and pieces and new information. It's been a while since I haven't seen it, but I remember thinking that the character of Summer was "the bad one" when I was a teenager, only to find out years later that the boy was kinda scary and what Summer felt, completely valid. I'll be rewatching soon. The scene of the bench just broke me.

Koe No Katachi (A Silent Voice): I CAN'T SAY THIS ENOUGH, WATCH THIS. I cried for 30 minutes after the credits roll. I love the stories about bullying, about redeeming yourself of your past, about difference and friendship. This story is heart-wrenching with such good animation and lighting (no need to show a bunch of landscapes). It's so deep and profound but without the need to metaphor lots of things, and the resolution is just as real, just as how life normally is.

SHREK: ...An instant classic. 1 and 2. The Puss in the Boots dubbed by Antonio Banderas is undoubtedly one of the best additions to the cast. I love how as an adult you can get all the jokes (my my, Shrek is full of sexual jokes) and all the stereotypes and toxicity that they are trying to subvert. Because Shrek is this: SUBVERSION at its best. It never, ever gets old.

INCEPTION / SHUTTER ISLAND: I watched them at the same time, almost, and those two films blew my mind in terms of narrative, plot twists and tension. I think they are incredibly useful to see the pace, but I also think that Inception opened a new whole genre of films that obliterated the normal sci-fi of the time (quickly forgotten to send half of the next films to space... such a shame). All the interpretations are amazing, and the fact that it has an open ending... THANK YOU SO MUCH.

HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE: Ultimate comfort film. I like all the franchise but I do think that GOF is above the others. It's not the best adapted book to film but let's remember that I think it's the longest book, so to adapt that in 2 hours and a half and make it for kids to understand, while it's incredibly dark for children... We have so many iconic things: the dragon's egg, we have Ron and Harry getting angry and jealous, we have Viktor Klum and Hermione dating, we have the Yule Ball ("Can you dance like a hippogriff nanana ananna anna), and Cedric Diggory's death. This is incredibly difficult to put in a film in terms of pacing and adapting to kids. I love that the Harry Potter films don't use a chroma for the most part, and rely on physical goods to recreate the magical universe.

SPIDERVERSE: ....What an incredible masterpiece of animation!!!!!!!!!! I could rant and rant about it. But I think this is getting too long. You will never find a film like this, no matter what they want to make you believe ("from the same studio that did...")

And that's it, folks! Also, special mention to: Hookwinked! It was one of my favourite films as a child and it's a masterpiece about POVs, narrative and script too.

What are your thoughts on when we’ll get a release date or a trailer? I was so convinced they’ll release it in July like last year but now I’m afraid that ship has sailed 😭

Hi Anon! I have a couple other anon requests I’ll get to tomorrow, but I wanted to make sure I got this one answered today BECAUSE I think we are getting info tomorrow.

Last year on the exact same day, Disney+ gave a bunch of announcements for future shows in the series (as a part of National Streaming Day). This included HSMTMTS have Corbin Bleu in s3 and the renewal of s4. Well, guess what day tomorrow is? 😁 and there is a tik toker @abbzbon who will be doing “flows” all day of different shows and what shows to watch on Disney+ if you watch Hulu and vice versa. I think we will get info there and/or on YouTube when they drop the video on show announcements. I don’t see them doing any more than a sneak peek at a scene (my guess is the principal announcing the play will be HSM4) and a release date.

If this is the case, I feel like we can expect the same timeline as last year where we get the first trailer mid-late June and the first episode late July… which I agree kind of sucks.

HOWEVER, we know this season is probably following the pattern of previous seasons (because it’s been revealed there will be a Halloween episode), so I could see them picking up right where season 3 episode 8 left off. Dara said episode 8 is important to rewatch for s4 and we have that screen cap of what looks to be Ricky unpacking on his bed (perhaps a flashback to before the kids watched the trailer?) so I think the SHOW will start mid-late summer, which would line up with when we start to watch it too.

TLDR: one scene and a release date tomorrow, trailer mid-late June, first episode release late July-first week of August

I also genuinely think we are getting a s5 but it won’t be announced tomorrow

My prediction for the first episode (if you care hahaha)

We start off right where episode 8 left. We see rina kiss again and them walking off stage and some sneaky scene where someone (even Corbin if he’s secretly still being a villain) is capturing their audio (the camera turned off, but mic’s very well could have still been on and for Corbin to blatantly say he was turning off the camera feels… sus to me)

We see a time jump of the kids returning from camp and some of the reasons they were dressed/acting the way they were at the trailer premiere (like Kourtney). We see the scene of Ricky unpacking and the photo of gina on his bed.

Then we flash forward to the first day/week back at East high where the kids find out about hsm3 -something Jenn is so proud of- just for the spotlight to kind of be taken by the principal announcing hsm4. (I feel like this will reflect her story arc in a big way. Like she’ll get another chance to be in an HSM movie and/or she is sad about the spotlight of her show getting taken so Mozzarella Stick comforts her and that’s what gets them together [I’m a Mikexjenn stan, but I won’t deny who will probably end up together]).

what are all these headcanons that stem from the last half of hsm3

SO! I saw this ask and I wanted to take some time to answer it properly in depth! (Sorry for the delay!)

So the first one is about Chad and Taylor - it's not super detailed (because honestly most of my headcanons are about Troy and/or Gabriella). I don't think this is much of a stretch, but I imagine they are very on again off again. The way Chad so dismissively says he and Taylor are breaking up when she goes to Yale makes me think he isn't really invested at all in the relationship, and it's really just for convenience considering their bffs are dating.

Also, a headcanon I've had a long time (I've started multiple oneshots about it that never got posted). Troy's parents knew he was going to California to chase down Gabriella, and they refused to let him go. And he, caught off guard, is just like "I wasn't really asking." His dad threatens to ground him ("until you graduate college") and Troy just accepts it. Like "Okay, I'll be grounded when I get back." And then he takes off. (His dad runs after him and catches him in the driveway and gives him his credit card for emergencies. He makes it very clear that it isn't permission, but he still wants Troy to be safe.)

This next part is all tied in together really - all the things Troy and Gabriella did and said on their road trip.

(They fucked - it was prom night, and Gabriella's mom works long hours. I just think it was inevitable.)

Troy tells her his college choices. If he gets the scholarship to Juilliard, he will go there. Otherwise he's going to Berkeley. That's why when Darbus announces the recipients, Gabriella has this funny look on her face and looks at Troy. (I would love to read a fanfic where Troy gets a scholarship - I'm surprised I've never seen one.)

Troy gives Gabriella a promise ring that he bought on a whim on his way out to her. He waits until the trip back because he didn't want to give it to her too soon and seem like he was trying to buy her love.

Oh, and another Chad one. Since he and Sharpay are both going to U of A, I wholeheartedly believe that they run into each other and become enemies with benefits. Like, they still hate each other, but they're there and in a weird way, they know each other well enough to trust them, even if they can't stand each other. When everyone else finds out about it, they're understandably confused and mildly concerned.

Ummmm those are all the ones I can think of right now! I may rewatch the movie tomorrow and see if I can remember any others. Let me know if you have any!

Saying Goodbye to East High

     As a child, I was a big fan of the classic Disney movies, with some of my favorites being from the High School Musical trilogy. High School Musical 3: Senior Year (2008) in particular had a big impact on how I perceived high school and especially graduating from it. High School Musical 3: Senior Year (2008) follows the lovable Wildcats from East High School as they experience their senior year from their last musical, basketball game, and prom as they address their hopes and fears about their unforeseeable future in college. Additionally, Troy and Gabriella struggle with the idea that they will be separated since they have different plans for college. The uncertainty the Wildcats faced appealed to younger audiences who had grown up watching these characters experience their ups and downs and wins and losses to now finally take the next big step in their lives of leaving for college, with many viewers going through the same thing. 

     Since the film is marketed toward younger audiences, it left most movie critics stating “If you aren’t between the ages of six and 14 or don’t have kids, you may have trouble getting into that Wildcat spirit. But don’t be shocked if Senior Year takes you back, just a bit, and makes you wish every high school was a little like East High” (Moore, 2008). Adult reviewers from The Rolling Stone even went as far as to say, “I especially gagged on the egregious group number ‘We’re All in This Together.’ You wish” (Travers, 2008). Though I will admit the HSM movies are an unrealistic standard of what really goes on in High School, since my high school experience was definitely not at all like the movies and people don’t break out into song and dance when an inconvenience comes to them, as a child, it did give me a look into what to look forward to to enjoy my high school years like prom, and graduation, but also what hardships I would have to face when growing up. Growing up is not easy, but having lovable characters, catchy song and dance numbers, and a sweet love story there to remind you to enjoy your years and just be a kid is something a lot of people needed before going off to college.

     Around the time of filming the movie,12,000 film and television screenwriters from the East and West Writers Guild of America went on strike from November 5, 2007, to February 12, 2008 (History.com Editors, 2009). This event is especially important because of the current Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strike happening around the globe, showing that big companies are still not paying their employees equal compensation, which is currently halting film and TV productions for the time being. Though in 2008, Disney raised a few million and the HSM3 script had been submitted and had begun development before Hollywood shut down for a few months. So they began pre-production in January 2008, and started filming after the strike ended a month later, starting production on May 3, 2008 at the notable East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. A few months later on August 8th, the Summer Olympic Games began in Beijing, China, which I remember watching as a kid (Weeks, 2008). Funny enough, the award-winning series Breaking Bad (2008-2013) premiered in January 2008, which was also set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, similar to HSM 3.

     Rewatching this film I found myself singing and dancing to all of the songs and just enjoying the story, the sets, the production design, and the characters. Though certain moments are more cheesy to look back on now, I still have the same love for this movie as I did when I first watched it. My personal memories of this movie cannot be altered because it is one childhood me really needed to see to prepare myself for the hard times to come in my high school and college years. So while the film critics who wrote bad reviews on this film may be more reliable than my childhood opinion, I believe this film was intended for younger audiences, therefore the older generations have different opinions on how this movie attempts to tell “fantasies” about high school through cheesy song, dance, and relationships, while us young adults look at this movie and recognize the underlying messages behind friendship, family, growing up, responsibility, opportunity and perseverance.

Manifesting either CIHTD, Everyday, and/or Kristof Lullaby for PW in S3 b/c lyrically those songs are SO spot on for them. Gotta Go My Own Way may give us angsty PW if G thinks about going back to her mom for a bit. Now that Camp Rock has been announced hoping PW/Gina sing 2 Stars, What it Takes OR Our Time is Here. I mean the poss are endless. Literally all the songs I listed are spot on for PW. Hell, What it Takes even has a line about sweatshirts. 😭 Guess its time to rewatch HSM2/3 and CR 🤷

Actually I think 2 Stars could be Lily singing to her hard to please mom like Tess in Camp Rock. So maybe cross that off for PW lol. Just thought the lyrics could work but only if out of context and I try not to do that. Sorry. Just had to amend that after rewatching that scene. 😅

I'm 100% with you on Everyday and Kristoff Lullaby for Portwell in S3! I don't have much hope for HSM3 songs this early into the show, so I'm not getting my hopes up for CIHTD just yet. Gotta Go My Own Way could really work for Portwell once EJ's college arc really comes into play. I actually had the idea that it could work as a song between Portwell, Rini, and Kowie, with Nini potentially feeling like Ricky isn't acting like himself (influenced by Lily but also just his own choices) and Kourtney potentially feeling betrayed by Howie if he was indeed involved in stealing the harness. They could divide the lyrics to best fit each ship:

Nini/Ricky: What about us? What about everything we've been through? Kourtney: What about trust? Howie: You know I never wanted to hurt you Gina: What about me? EJ: What am I supposed to do?

But that's just wild speculation on my part. I'm down for them covering GGMOW, period! It could be great for any of the main ships.

As for the Camp Rock songs, not sure if I can see What It Takes for Portwell. A few lyrics do remind me of them ("Every girl wants a boy to treat her sweet" and "Hey, hey, can I borrow your sweatshirt", mainly), but given that Gina has already found her guy, it's hard to imagine a context in which she'd sing that. It's not impossible, of course! Hardly anything is. I'm just speaking from my POV. Our Time Is Here could potentially work for Portwell, but I like the idea of it as a group song more. It's a nice "saying goodbye to camp" song.

2 Stars for Lily could be so interesting! Even before we got the most recent batch of S3 info, I'd been thinking about how we may be meeting Lily's parents or at the very least her mom this season and that they may own the camp (mostly cause that would parallel how HSM2 introduced Sharpay's parents). And with Camp Shallow Lake being family owned, that seems a much stronger possibility now. So the Camp Rock songs could help the writers tell Lily's story, if that's where they're going with her. After all, we do know that it's Lily's mom who taught her that she's not adding value if she's not adding followers. Sounds like a mother-daughter relationship that could really fit 2 Stars.

  Hello, Anon! It’s very nice of you to drop by. I hope that you’re having a lovely day/evening/night-- whatever time it is where you are. ❤

 I apologize if this disappoints anyone, but I have chosen to leave the High School Musical fandom, as of 2018. I was too emotionally invested in a deeply unhealthy way, and had too many negative encounters and unpleasant experiences with certain facets of the fandom. Continuing to dwell in any space that engulfs you in negative feelings on a regular basis will only bring you harm in the long run. 

 I had to learn that the hard way when something that was once an escape for me became a source of unyielding anxiety. 

 I advise anyone who may likewise be struggling to leave behind something that once made you happy and now causes you undue stress and pain to do the same. It will be tough, but I promise you that it is worth it and you will feel so much better turning the page to a new chapter. 

 With all of that said, I am glad that someone is still able to take something valuable from my Anti-Troy/Gabriella posts. I wasn’t in the best headspace when I typed up many of them, and there are definitely some that I regret. But, I do feel that they are informative enough to keep online. And, that is thanks to kind people like you, who take the time to let me know that my silly and often heated rants are doing even the teeniest-tiniest, most microscopic bit of good.  ( ´͈ ◡ `͈ )

 Now, to answer your question... 

 Gabriella is meant to be the pillar of virtue in these films. She’s the crusader against all wrongs who stands up to Sharpay and puts her in her place. She helps Ryan receive recognition for his talents and make his own friends, and “inspires” Troy to follow his heart. She espouses the messages of promise being a “really big word”, and “if you act like someone you’re not, pretty soon that’s who you become”, and (we’re supposed to believe) single-handedly changed everyone at East High for the better. 

 In artistic and cinematic language, such figures of “virtuosity” are frequently depicted in articles of white clothing, often with something resembling a halo adorning their heads. 

 This is a form of visual shorthand that signals to the readers, viewers, et cetera, that the person wearing white is pure, chaste, and made of all things good, right, and wholesome. 

Yours and my assessments of her character, aside, I have no doubt that this is exactly what these costume choices were intended to signal to the viewers of HSM3, which is, not-so-coincidentally, the film most intent on elevating Gabriella to something approximating sainthood.
