I LOVE this question, and as a recent Baki fan myself, I can tell you that getting into the series as a Western consumer can be rough if you don’t have a basic guide to know what you’re getting into…. so that’s what I’m gonna make this post (TEEHEE).

This series has gotta be one of the most insane shonen- actually no- one of the most INSANE PIECES OF FICTION I've ever experienced, and I NEED more people to check it out. Like, LOOK AT THIS SHIT DUDE.

Baki out of context somehow even puts Jojo's Bizarre Adventure to shame. The way I usually pitch it to people is that Baki is as insane as people THINK Jojo is before they read it. Shit is just... MAN LMAO. OBAMA IS FUCKING IN THIS.

Unlike more popular stuff like Dragon Ball and Hunter x Hunter, a lot of this series has just never been officially localized, so knowing where to start, and even how to support the series, is a hard task if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Thankfully THAT’S WHAT YOU HAVE ME FOR. This Tumblr post is gonna be your one stop shop for how to get into Baki as an English speaker (and it’ll give me some space to ramble about one of my latest favorite series).

But uh before we get into the nitty gritty, wanna put some trigger warnings for the series for those who may want to know. Listen, I know how some of these are gonna look to the average person, but this series just be like that sometimes, if you can’t take stuff like this trust me it’s insanely valid. You’ll understand if you choose to take the plunge.

SERIES TRIGGER WARNINGS:

Animated Blood/Violence, some animated gory imagery, Incest (???), Nudity, Urine stuff, Bigfoot/Animal Violence, Death, Uncomfortable looking muscles, and one instance of sexual violence (offscreen)

If you are comfortable with all that (and again, valid as fuck if you aren’t) then let’s talk BAKI!

First off, Manga or Anime?

You would think that either would be fine, but my personal recommendation for Baki as a beginner, is to watch the anime over reading the manga. Simply put: The anime is a lot more widely available and accessible in English speaking territories, and is fairly easy to support officially with its current iteration.

For whatever reason, the manga just never really took off in the West when compared to other series, so it was only ever officially released in English a handful of times, and they only ended up publishing the first few volumes. Theoretically, you can read the first few books to start, but the entire series all together is legit longer than One Piece at a whopping 1,203 chapters, so you are gonna run out of material real quick. The fraction of officially available manga barely scratches the surface of the series.

Even if you’re stubborn about reading the manga and want to try reading fan translations, they come with their own separate batch of issues. Plenty of fan scans you can find online range from wildly outdated, to generally being poor quality at best. There’s even some fan translations that just straight up make shit up and don’t even properly translate the original script. Adding in extra dialogue and slurs randomly to make the text seem way edgier than it actually is.

Full disclosure, I wanna cut through my bias here and say that there are indeed some great scans available on the internet if you look hard enough, especially for the more recent content! But they aren’t super easy to track down with how the series is formatted, and you may accidentally find yourself reading the story out of its proper order.

The watch/read order of Baki is a bit of a toughie for new people, but is actually pretty simple once it’s explained. The story of Baki is split up into multiple different series, kind of similar in format to Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. Though instead of “Parts”, Baki is split up into completely different manga and TV series. This is why many fans get confused initially, especially with the watch order, because it isn’t laid out in an easy to understand way at first glance.

The most well known series are currently streaming on Netflix, but those aren’t the ones you wanna start with. Nope, the story of the Baki anime actually starts way back in 2001, in a TV show that isn’t streaming officially online. Now if you want to watch out of order, I’m not gonna stop you. You can do whatever you want, by all means, but you’re gonna be missing some VERY important story context, and some characters just won’t hold the same weight.

So if you DO want to watch in order, come with me my friend. Let me show you-

BAKI’S SUPER COOL AND NOT AT ALL CONFUSING WATCH ORDER:

Baki the Grappler (2001) (24 episodes)

This is the original 2001 anime adaptation, the very start of serialized Baki anime. You’re gonna wanna start here trust me.

This series isn’t streaming anywhere officially online, but you can find it… places. Seek it out, trust me, because otherwise you’re gonna pay way too much for out of print DVDs on Ebay. Thankfully though you have options! The series is both subbed and dubbed (as well as every series I discuss from this point forward.

This show is the very start of serialized Baki anime, the very beginning of Baki Hanma’s story. Although it’s not in the way you may think. Despite this being the earliest point in the Baki timeline, it’s actually an adaptation of a later story arc from the manga.

Now I know what you’re thinking, “Didn’t you just say this is where I should start? Why is it adapting something from later in the story?”, and yeah it’s valid to be confused. While yes this is the first ever Baki anime, for some reason the staff behind it made the decision to move this later arc up a bit from the original manga. In my honest opinion, I feel like this is actually a great decision.

As you will see as you watch, this honestly FEELS like this should be where the story begins. The escalation of power and storytelling from this point onward feels very natural, and you won’t miss out on anything or spoil yourself whatsoever on later events.

This is the de facto best starting point.

Grappler Baki Maximum Tournament (2001) (24 episodes)

This is effectively the second season of Baki the Grappler. For whatever reason they decided to title it something else, and while this is the norm for the series later on, this name change is weird because it adapts an arc from the original manga just like the first season of anime I just talked about.

Whatever lol.

Anyway this series, much like the previous, isn’t officially available as of now. So your best option is to SEARCH for it. SEARCH on the INTERNET. Or y’know. The good ol’ expensive out of print DVD on Ebay route.

In my opinion, compared to the first season, this one feels a bit slower paced and a bit of a slog at points but HOLD STRONG TRUE BELIEVER. This season is the introduction to a lot of mainstay characters in the series. Many of which you will come to love, even if you don’t know it yet.

BAKI (2018) (39 episodes) (NETFLIX)

This is the modern adaptation of Baki. After the last series ended in 2001, the anime went on hiatus for 17 years before it was announced that it would be coming back with a modern coat of paint.

Contrary to what you may think, this isn’t a ground up reboot. It’s a continuation of the exact point they left off years ago, right after the Maximum tournament. The only thing that kind of sucks about this is that, at least for the English dub, they replaced most of the voice cast. Most of the new VAs do a great job, however you may need to get used to Yujiro Hanma having Shadow the Hedgehog’s modern VA from the games haha.

Thankfully, you can officially support this series easily via Netflix. Normally I’m pretty eh on Netflix as of late, but this being the only way you can support the show officially in the west, I personally recommend it.

Baki Hanma (2023) (39 episodes) (NETFLIX)

This is the most recent anime! It’s also on Netflix.

Anyway, this is my list! If after you catch up you wanna hop into the manga and read the fan scans, I’ve heard that you can start on Baki Hanma/Baki Son of Ogre (chapter 183).

For once Inazuma was calm and silent; perhaps it was the presence of the god that sat on the edge of the cliff, or perhaps it was something else. No one knew but fate. 

Said god stared at the individual as he walked the road below her. His steps lazy and his shoulders and head hanging down from tiredness. The occasional sob rang through the air as tears streamed down his cheeks. 

Eventually the poor boy fell down onto his knees, head held low as he cried loudly. Slowly the god made her way to the boy. He looked up as he heard soft footsteps approaching. 

Before him stood a girl, perhaps not much older than himself. She wore regular yet fancy clothes, a turquoise orb hanging on her hip. And it may have been his own imagination but he swore he felt a cool breeze in his face.

The girl put her hands up in surrender; showing him she wasn't going to hurt him. Slowly she walked towards him, kneeling beside him as she pulled the boy in her arms. Soon his figure melted into her warm embrace as his tears wet her shirt. She held him until his tears slowed down enough for him to talk. 

“Who are you?” he had asked.

The girl gently cupped his face in her hands and brushed his tears away.

“You can call me y/n.” Y/n sat down next to him, “What happened?”

And the boy fell apart again as he told his story. Beginning by the betrayal of his mother, to the last one of his closest friend. Y/n smiled softly as she grabbed onto the air next to them. Something glowing materialized in her hand as she grabbed his own. She laid the object in his palm and closed his fingers around it before standing back up. 

“If you ever need anything, just call out my name.” she whispered before placing a soft kiss on his forehead and disappearing. 

Only later–long after Kunikuzushi opened his hand to find an anemo vision lying in his hand–he realized he had just met the Anemo Archons twin. It took him a long time and lots of hours in multiple libraries to find out everything about the girl. 

He knew his mother had a twin sister–that was one of the things he actually knew about his mother, not the Shogunate–and that they ruled Inazuma after the Archon war, but that she was lost during a horrendous battle. The Anemo Archon and his twin were the same story–minus one being lost in battle. 

He wore his vision with pride. He was proud of it. He had gotten it from the Anemo goddess herself. 

And when his third betrayal happened, Scaramouche called out to the god.

“Y/n… please. Oh mighty goddess.”

It had been late at night when that voice hung in y/n her head. It had been more than a hundred years. 

“I gotta go.” she told her brother and disappearing in a gust of wind. When she reached her destination she saw the boy on his knees again, tears silently falling down his cheeks.

“Please…” his voice rang out again, y/n noticed his anemo vision hanging from his hip, just like her own–even though hers was fake. 

“I’m here, I’m here.” y/n pulled the boy in her arms like she had done a hundred years ago. 

Kunikuzushi didn’t mind it at all, his body relaxed against the goddess. Her body warmth comforted him in a way his mother should have done. Slowly her fingers brushed through his hair as she hummed a soft melody.

“People leave us sometimes. Not everyone is immortal like you and I. Mortals get ill or old, and without proper care they’ll pass on to the next realm sooner than we might like. But it’s their circle of life, and we cannot do anything to stop nature.”

Over the years, y/n had gotten to know more about this boy. She and Yae Miko had been in contact, and the story of how Kunikuzushi was created was told.

“But-”

“Yes, he was too young. But even I cannot change his fate.” 

After a few hours y/n left the boy in his room, tucked into bed and lost in a deep dreamless sleep.

But that wasn’t the end of the boy's misery, he lived through more, encountered stronger and endured more pain. But everytime he called out to his goddess; no sign of a reply returned. And slowly he started believing that his goddess–who had helped him through so much, who promised him to be there for him, who believed in him–had abandoned him too.

But that wasn’t the case. 

Not long after y/n left the boy in his room; she and her brother fell into a deep slumber. Unlike her brother–y/n heard all the prayers sent her way. She was aware of everything. 

She heard Kunikuzushi’s pleas and tears, but she couldn’t do anything. 

Eventually she gave in to the darkness of the slumber and even Kunikuzushi’s pleas were deafened by the darkness. 

Many years later in Inazuma Scaramouche had to do a double take. He stood eye to eye with the famous traveler who was looking for his sister when he felt a soft breeze hit his face. And when he averted his eyes to behind the traveler he stilled, his words stopping as his rage grew bigger.

“You,” he spat. Eyes full of hatred. 

You still had your vision on your hip, your clothes different and more modern to fit this time. Your eyes still held that sweet gaze and your lips that sweet smile.

“Kuni-” you tried calling out his name.

“No, that's not my name. After all these years you finally come back. At the time where I don’t need you, if I may add. I needed you, all those years ago. But I guess I was better off without you bothering me.”

Your voice was long lost as his words rang through you. It felt like acid, or poison. They stung. It hurt.

“Kuni let me explain-” “I already said; that’s not my name. It’s Scaramouche now. And I don’t need your pathetic excuses. I don’t need you anymore.” 

The traveler called out your name, tears streaming down your face by now. With one last look at Kunikuzushi–no Scaramouche–you turned around and took the traveler with you as you disappeared in a gust of wind. 

You dropped the traveler off at Kokomore teahouse before heading to Yae Miko’s residence. 

“You were right, he changed.” you said as you fell to your knees the same way Kunikuzushi had done hundreds of years ago before you helped him. 

Only there was no one to help you now, only his harsh words.

“I don’t need you anymore.”

Translator’s note: Even though I have listened to this CD at least five times by now, it still remains hilarious. Definitely one of my favorites although I realize that I’m biased because of Subaru and Yuma. I also really enjoy the dynamic of Ayato with either one of them as well. He’s an A+ troll in this one and I live for it, haha. It also reminded me of the one sub-scenario in VC where Subaru and Yuma try to decide who is stronger by arm-wrestling, but it ends with a draw when the two of them break the table in the process. I guess Yuma has the physical advantage but Subaru is a pureblood Vampire so he has the edge there, balancing things out in the end.

Remembering Digimon Alpha Generation

Given it is still Digimon month, I cannot help but be kinda nostalgic about the fandom. Because, again, it was my longest hyperfixation. I had other hyperfixations, yes, but not a single one lasted me as long as Digimon did.

And I just wanna ramble about my Digimon fanseries that I wrote back then.

The year was 2006 when I created a goggle boy named Yuki Denrei for what was originally meant to be an RPG maker fangame, on which I was writing. But the team around that fangame kinda broke apart so by 2008 I was kinda like: "Hey, maybe I gotta make something else with this character." And then: "Hey, doesn't it kinda suck, that Digimon Tamers never got a sequel?"

So I sat down and started writing on my own sequel for Digimon Tamers. It was called Digimon Alpha Generation. The idea at the time came from the fact that we did have the Card Game Alpha (that did not last quite that long) happening at the time. And so I just made the hook that the main characters here were using Digivices to scan the Card Game Alpha Cards, rather than those of the original card game.

Now, my own writing back then was still kinda a mess, but the story went something like this:

The year is 2008, when rebellious teenager Yuki Denrei gets a mysterious invite to a card game fight. The girl who had challenged him is a weird one, though. As they talk she wants to find out which is the card he trusts over all others. And when he is unable to give a proper answer, she summons a Digimon on him. A real Digimon! The only reason Denrei survives this encounter is, that suddenly a card from his deck materializes into Dracomon. Soon enough, Denrei finds out that there are other Digimon Tamers around. Teenagers like him, who have Digimon partners. But again and again that mysterious girl keeps showing up, challenging and the other tamers into fights...

Again, my writing back then was messy as fuck. It took me years to complete the story (that ended up with about 250k words) and I did not have a concrete plan where I was going with it the entire time.

All I knew at the beginning was, that I wanted to have the demon lords as antagonists and wanted to have a more international story happening. Which is why the entire middle arc has the tamers world travelling.

It was an interesting experience as a writer, though.

I knew from the very beginning, that the main trio for this story was gonna be Denrei, a lone wolf character named Shoji, and a now 14yo Shiuchon. Due to Shiuchon having her partner from the very beginning, she is in fact the first one out of this trio reaching the Ultimate level (in the half-way final).

But it was interesting as given I had only rough ideas plotted out, I could kinda react to what the readers at the time were thinking. For example, the peopled fucking adored Shoji (he ended up as the fan favorite character out of all the Digimon Tamers stuff I wrote), so I gave him more scenes. And folks started shipping Denrei and Shiuchon, so I gave the two of them more scenes together and had them end up together in a later story.

I personally loved Denrei, because man I wrote a lot of my parent related anger issues into this character. But I also had so much fun writing Shiuchon in this as a type of character we really never quite got in Digimon. A female, very straight forward character who just says it as it is. And also... is kinda flirty with everyone. xD

At times I still wanna translate the story into English. But then again: 250k - and the sequel story has anther 250k. So a total of 500k - and that is without all the side stories.

And again, it was kinda a mess. So the temptation would be there to rather do a rewrite of Alpha Generation. I don't know. Just thinking.

Might talk about the sequel, too, in the coming days.

warning you before you get to the rest of the ask i have thought about this at length so. information that may not be of interest to most people

because although funny, it's an odd line to me bcs if we're being realistic, it's imposible for tori to not recognize ibara given hes. a really important guy you know, cospro's deputy director and part of eden who were in the ss and that tori's admired hiyori-sama is part of. and in cradle of turbulence he indeed recognizes him perfectly and refers to him as saegusa senpai like it's not a big deal. so i guess they had somewhat met before offscreen 🤔 gotta wait for rainbow translation and see if there's anything there

and i find it suuuuch an interesting interaction too ! ill read too much into it because i can. it's macarons, so ibara most likely knows tori has a sweet tooth. not something too hard to find out about given they have many contractions, but it's one of those moments where ibara's penchant for collecting information "for evil purposes" comes across as a sweet gesture hskjflsjdkfhs picking a gift he'd like. but i also like how nonchalant tori is about it gajskdhfslds he did learn to not accept food from strangers. and it Is a pretty weird thing to do. i wonder if he really did it just to piss off yuzuru lmao but he's not the type to actively look for conflict so idk, he def knew it was not a way to actually get tori's favor either. i once in fact read it as a post cradle of turbulence interaction, like some odd way of saying "i like you" but yeah, it doesn't quite track with the "someone"

AND YEAHHH AKIRA WITJ THEM i need that so bad. adding this to the mental "tori finds out about the military facility" ideal event. it's precisely because there is such a heavy link between them that cradle of turbulence is a perfect first one-on-one interaction. a situation where ibara has to protect someone he has many reasons to dislike, because tori is a cute and lovely child that almost inadvertantly has that kind of effect on you ("his loveliness is a centripetal force // the people around him won't let him be sad"* and so on). by seeing tori in a vulnerable position it makes it more unlikely that he'll later do something that could be bad for tori.................. and at the same time it's so telling how casual tori is about ibara, as he just makes simple small talk like there's nothing to be awkward about, because to him there isn't.................. much to think about. i really want to see how akira makes ibara grapple with tori as a person and everything he signifies. a cute child, partly responsible of many terrible experiences ibara has had, yuzuru would kill ibara if he ever laid a finger on him, hiyori sees him as a small version of himself somewhat, eichi's successor of sorts... jimenyan's best friend, even. there is so much there. i kind of really want him to be the one to tell tori about the military facility. there is Something there that has potential idk. maybe put yuzuru in some sort of danger and have tori be more in charge or something mhmmm.....

To start off I was introduced to Trigun by fanart on Pinterest while looking for art inspiration. So thank you to all the fandom artists!! I'm not really into anime too much, so this has been the first anime thats had my attention in a long while.

I began this series by watching up to episode 3 of Stampede and then decided "I can't wait, I must consume".

Immediately watched the high trip that is Tri98 and then came the heart crushing Maximum. Also have to thank @genkooii for the link to the proper translation to Maximum. Here is the link to that post if anyone wants to read as well.

I'm really happy with the way I followed the series and love it so much. Each version having its own charm and still keeping Vash's core at heart. But there are differences and somethings i find that were done better than others. I'll give my feelings for each first and then compare them.

Begining with the first 3 episodes of Stampede The animation was new and interesting. I didn't know about the hate for CGI until later on. I agree that it does look different, but I quite like the potential it has. Its beautiful in its own right. For story, I have to admit even as a newbie, the pacing was rough for me. I realized this after Vash saved Jenora (again) barely had time to breathe and then EG Mine shows up. (I learned later that I stopped just before things ramped up even more) I like tragedy, but subtlety goes a long way. Will come back to Stampede again further down.

Next is the OG Trigun 98 anime. I didn't realize how much I missed the 90s anime aesthetic?? There's just something about it. Even though it is dated in appearance, there are some great frames and angles this anime had that just makes it so intense!! This version did have fillers, but I felt like they weren't out of place. I have to admit here that I have a bias for this version. I grew up as a Fallout New Vegas fan, and this just gives me the same vibes. The questioning of morality with no real defined answer? How people struggled to survive and how fucking wacky they were!??? All while the protag is basically a wandering gunslinger/cowboy. Loved it. Gotta have those spurs that jingle jangle jingle, while having an existential crisis.

And here we are at Maximum.. man, words can't even describe how Stamp and Tri98 didn't prepare me for this at all. It's like that hair-clutching-hysterical-crying that settles into soft calm laugher and happy tears. It was really painful, those tough and tender pages i read... I loved it. This version does have a combination of both the above. And Stamp is more based on this version. But the pacing, while quick, had the subtlety I craved. The action was cool and interesting, but i now understand why it was said as "hard to follow". It can get a bit confusing. Overall, I ate this manga up when I definitely should have been studying, haha!

I actually went back to Tri98 after Max and definitely felt the differences between them. It was a bit surreal. Had to separate the two in my mind, but I still love them both.

Return of the Stamp! Now having finished all prior media, I looked at Stampede with new eyes. I'm glad I waited because I binge watched the episodes. I definitely understand why older fans were concerned, but this was my original, and I am going to stick by Stamp's side for as long as I can. Hmm how to describe how I feel now that season 1 has ended... this Trigun is in neutral for me right now. Though the animation is enough to make me go bonkers over the expressions and lighting, it's not enough for me to say it's outrageously good storytelling wise. But it does convey emotions well when it wants too. And they are definitely setting the stage up for Vash and more trimax story. I'm eager to see the results. I enjoy it overall. Season 2 will truly decide for me.

Okay here is the comparison part and will likely contain SPOILERS

Pacing

Stamp- as I mentioned much too quick but hopefully since this prequel season is over they will have more time to space out the story a bit

98- quite like this pacing. Has world building and mystery towards Vash for the first half. Makes it intriguing. The later half does go by quicker. Plants are hardly mentioned or explained.

Max- always in motion. Only in the first OG(prequel?) Trigun manga is there filler, which is what Tri98 is based more off of. But also this filler still had meaning and made you think.

Character relastionships/Interactions

Stamp- very little, Meryl is basically the only one who develops with Roberto and a tiny bit with Vash at the very end of the season.

I feel like something was lost between Wolfwood and Vash in this version. Woodwold being cold and Vash saying he looks kind, if you haven't seen the other media it's nice. Technically, there's nothing wrong with it. But i now see this is one of the tropes older fans complain about. It lacks the depth the 98 anime, and Trimax WW and Vash had. It gets straight to the point but loses a sort of dynamic. This anime didn't have the luxury of time I suppose. I don't hate wolfwood here. How could I? When he made such a soft expression at Livio. He still has that need to protect and thats what really matters.

98- another reason I like Tri98 is because they actually had the characters interact more. Meryl and Milly came to see Vash more and more and understand, he isn't at all what they or others thought he was. They had more time to be inspired by him. Meryl is definitely more aggressive and very direct. I don't hate this version. It's a straight man to Vashes over exaggerated goofiness. For the anime it works but I hate that for how abservent she is, that she really couldn't see Vash as the stampede?? Kind dumb but it's a wacky show, had to have a sillier vibe.

WW I like how they are actually friendly to each other at first. When the person who made you smile/soften up, has a harshly contrasting moral view to your own, it creates a certain sort of tension. Loved Vashs and WW friendship here. His death was kinda sadder since he died feeling like he didnt acomplish much. Vash's moment of breaking down while eating donuts was heart-wrenching . Also Vash using the Punisher vs Knives, such a good scene!!!

I actually really like Milly and Wolfwood together. It's cute. Millys more capable then I thought. Love her.

Max- Meryl and Milly have much less time with Vash. I do like how they are inspired by him still, but they only come around every so often to say a baller couple of lines than they dip. Don't get me wrong, I understand why, and I love how they are the representation of the good in humans, but they no longer feel as close. Which is saying something because 98 Vash was still a really distant dude. It just feels like the gap between them and Vash is more apparent. But they also had a really big issue at hand, so understandable. When Vash is called out for not letting them help more, he acknowledges that he can't afford to think about it at the moment. These characters were still great on their own.

WW- by far the only real human relationship Vash has ever had. And I don't mean in the romantic sense, but a sense of actually getting to know someone on a personal level despite their tense differences. Learning, inspiring each other while opposing each other. To have faith in someone. Vash is either on a pedestal or on trial when around most humans and I like that WW brings him down to his level. In the worst and best ways, he makes Vash truly human. I thought his death in the anime was painful but this was so much worse.

Livio and Vash bounding over their lost of WW will always get to me. The spaghetti scene. T_T Glad that Vash has another companion that could help in the physical fighting to come. Livio vs Elendria was a great!!. Liked how Livio was a combination of WW and Vash. A surprise break out character for me.

Does it make you think?

Stamp- Kinda spoon feed the tropes to you. I don't expect this to happen in the 2nd season. You could feel the subtle messages in the last few episodes of the season. I feel like they are done being overly flashy, time for the thick sauce of you-gotta-think-about-this-now.

98- despite it being so much like an abridge series, the episodes do make you think. Thats whats so good about it. The unsuspecting "here is haha funny man, now think about the uselessness of being good in this world". Love the episode with the rich girl and her criminal dad. Shows her position like most humas on Gunsmoke/no man's land. Moral grey kinda thing? That the world they live in isn't simply black and white.

Max- better dust off the old noggin and soak it in your tears.

Sadness

Maximum wins. IWANTHIMTOGETAHUGANDATHANKYOUANDAND---'

Stamp close second might surpass Maxs trauma in time. Who knows.

98- Someone mentioned that this Vash isn't suicidal. That is how low the bar is to make him the happiest of all the Vashes. Technically, he also got the best ending, for now, at least.

Knives

Stamp- oh no.. hes hot...and they definitely made him more intimidating than 98. Coming back to episode 4 was a thrill ride, but this version of Knives is very yandere. He does care for Vash but very manipulative and narcissistic. Gaslighting galore. I kinda understand it because of the manga now, but the whole pregnant plants and all that really puts this Knives on the less redeemable scale. His piano theme is amazing tho!!

98- barely there, the ending fight was cool, and I enjoyed it a lot. I did still like him in this version, but it had a lukewarm water kinda feel. The lesser of all the knives.

Max- the great thing about Maximum is that it shows so much depth to the story that i knew before, and to Knives. How sad and alone he really his. How his intentions are really just to save his kind from a threat that broke his mind with their cruelty. I don't disagree with him, actually. What he saw l, what humans do, does go toe to toe with Vash's optimistic. Knives is so human compared to Vash in my opinion. It's kinda odd and so poetic. Also when the plant hivemind was ripped away from him, I felt sad. He was alone again. Still wrong for him to obsorb his siblings tho...

VASH the man the myth the lengend

Stamp - Hmm, this has Trimax Vash attitude, but more on the meek side. My first impression was that he was a cute and kinda like a kicked puppy. I want to pat his head. In this version I wasn't thrown off by him being an all loving protagonist he just had the vibe off the start. Watching him in the later episodes did make me tear up. He's so soft and does have that tenderness that all Vashs' have. A cinnamon roll, too pure to good for this world.

98- he uses his smile as a sheild and plays it off better than the other Vashes, but his pain is still there. He is also pathetic, in a loving way lol. Before getting to know his story, i thought he was crazy. I was like every other character that he met. I didn't understand his struggle. I just saw the crazy man who made things difficult by choosing to avoid killing. Him getting serious and holding fast to his beliefs amazed and stunned me. Had me step back and see his point of view. Highly respect his willpower. However I don't entirely agree with him. Which many have pointed out thats the point of Vash. He is also much more confident and sly than Stamp Vash. Which is weird because it makes him seem more experienced and I think Stamp is older? He manages to use his pervy and over the top silliness to disarm people and get the advantage in most situations. He's smarter than he looks. I enjoyed the ending for this Vash, because it touches on his moral code after having to kill Legato. Him finally looking forward to the future without Rem being the main focus to his life and decisions. There wasn't enough time in Trimax and I would have liked some pages on it. But he was a bit busy saving the planet... He may be louder than the other Vash's but he still strives for a world that is made of ----- LOVE AND PEACE!!

Maximum- this Vash is like an older dad of the other two. He is worn down and you can feel it but he will NOT stop fighting. He is a tad more direct than the other Vashes and I was surprised that he has a tiny mean streak when he's irritated. I like this. He isn't always hiding behind that painted smile. He definitely gives off more of that Angel theme the manga has. An older creature that is indeed different from humans but wants to care and look out for them, but people are so scared of him. Poor dude. Every Vash holds the same core elements, the tenderness, the wit, and the determination. But this Vash really nails it down that he is the OG. And man, some of the lines for Maximum were just chefs' kiss. Had me just staring at the pages pondering. But he is so broken and mostly picks up the pieces alone. I am bitter that he never got any comfort or closure at the end. I am grateful it was a hopeful ending but HE LOST SO MUCH!!

3rd -Stampede - I really love the look, music, and some of the emotional points, just not enough storytelling for me to appreciate it more. I also feel like it's a bit too early to judge. So much can happen in the 2nd season.

I'm probably not the first person to message you about this but, I found a bunch of gif drawings on the site, all linking to record gifs with audio tapes, so far I've found 12, and been able to link them together somewhat coherently. There seems to be 2 different set of messages. One that comes from the tab name, and one that comes from the audio.

gotta ask, what do you think about the tetonaru dynamic

AH I ALMOST FORGOT TO ANSWER THIS. I was really tired and unwell when I got it and I wanted to write a proper answer so yknow. Hi, now that I can write one:

I absolutely adore the tetonaru dynamic! I got into enstars some time before Beasts first dropped, and back then I hadn't really thought about their dynamic a whole lot (especially bc... I was new to enstars lmao), but when that story first came out I started thinking about how interesting it was to put those two together, as the trans girl (at the time, a question mark) on a journey to self-love and the boy who wants nothing more than to become a man among men. Two people who are seemingly complete opposites in every way, especially in their desires and ideals, coming together at the end of the school year and exploring what it means to be who they are. Seeing Tetora in a skirt and wig I was... definitely shocked? And had no idea what to think of what the story would be like, but I did find it interesting. (continued under cut)

Then eventually, because I couldn't speak Japanese at the time to read it for myself, a translation of the story came out and it quickly became one of my favorite stories ever. I absolutely adore the way it was written and every single development that happened, both between the characters and in the story itself. Like I said before, at the time I wasn't sure whether Arashi was a trans girl or was just a... weird portrayal of an 'effeminate' boy, but this story really cemented that she is a trans girl, and it's the story I use as evidence of it all the time. Seeing Tetora learn about her and realize his mistakes? That was peak! It was also the start of a beautiful dynamic between the two of them, and it's one that I can't imagine going without now.

I just love the way their relationship started out so rough, with Tetora only having a surface-level knowledge of her and using that to praise her, not knowing that he was hurting her instead. In turn, Arashi thought he was annoying, and after being hurt by his words, decided to play a mean-spirited prank on him in return. Tetora may have looked up to her, but it was a misguided admiration, and Arashi wanted nothing more than for him to leave her alone. It's a very good representation of their characters in general - Tetora is quick to get attached to people he feels like he can look up to, and Arashi has struggled consistently with acting unfairly towards others based on her own personal annoyance etc. But then, things happened, and their relationship changed; they both had realizations about themselves and each other.

Madara told Tetora that Arashi is trans, and he realized how much he had been hurting her by calling her manly without even intending to, and he regretted his actions so much that he cried - something we never ever see him do otherwise - when apologizing to her. Even though he says he doesn't fully understand the way she feels, the way it is to be trans, he's still willing to respect and support her. He still sees her as the woman she is, and later refers to her as such when talking to Midori in the epilogue.

Arashi, on the other hand, thinks she may have put him in real danger by having him dress up as a girl, and then realizes how mean her prank was. When he apologizes so sincerely, even prostrating on the ground in dogeza, she realizes that he really meant no harm and was just being earnest. She gets upset at herself for being so mean, but forgives him for what he did, and it's a lesson in... not assuming the worst from others? Which is also really important imo, especially for Arashi, who always has. She even thinks she's just as bad as the people who have always hurt her for doing what she did.

The way their friendship has developed since that story is so special to me. Tetora saying he wants to embrace the more 'girly' parts of himself and that those can be manly strengths too is so important! And in the same way, he talks about wanting to turn his perceived weaknesses into strengths. Arashi, on the other hand, learned to love and accept both herself and others more, and again, not to assume malice where it may just be ignorance.

They both help each other improve as people and just... have become so important to each other? And that's so important to me. Watching them become such good friends, Tetora really respecting and treating Arashi like a girl and Arashi being respectful of Tetora's own wishes (he's one of the few people her age or younger that she doesn't use -chan for! Because he's expressed discomfort with it!), and the two of them hanging out together to do all sorts of things is just so cute and sweet to me. The fact that they became roommates in !! era was a dream come true for me. They both learn so much together and from each other, and their friendship is so cute.

I love seeing them do cute things together, seeing Arashi get Tetora modeling work, seeing Arashi teach Tetora about fashion and skincare (things he hadn't paid much attention to before, but now he's become so good at? He helped design the outfits for Nekketsu☆Ryusei Ninpouchou, he made suggestions for Kanata's second personalized outfit, Midori has commented on how fashionable he's gotten and several characters have commented on the condition of his skin and his use of perfumes), seeing them go shopping for accessories together (Tetora's recent 4* story destroyed me, hence the translation), seeing both of them think about and admire each other's growth... it's just been such good development for them, both as individuals and together.

Their friendship is just... so special to me. It's a story of forgiveness, of acceptance, of self-love, of respect for yourself and others, of realizing your mistakes and bettering yourself from them, of watching each other grow, and it's just plain cute. TetoNaru are just so so special to me. I don't think I even did it justice in all the words I've written here lmao. I apologize for the rant but I really care about them so much >.<

how did u learn graphic design? i’ve just started out w basic gifs on photoshop and so far even adding subtitles feels so overwhelming ajskdnskns (unless u are studying graphic design in like. uni 😭)

ahh well truth be told, i kind of bulldozed my way into it, probably back in 2015/16 when i was first getting started out in the youtube anime editing community? people were asking for graphic designers for their studio channels, and i looked at my own channel--my banner a blurry pokedex, and my icon a purple link (from a loz four swords animated short) going fabulous--and figured i probably needed to do get on their level if i wanted to be serious.

i used sony vegas pro and did super simple things! you just gotta be unafraid to do things that feel childishly easy and look like garbage! i started out with basics, like the rule of thirds was a godsend--some solid colour + a render of a character to the far left + some decent typography for a banner? boom, done. and then it was doing shit thumbnails for my shit vids (and i mean SHIT, look at this 💀)

trust the process! for me it was getting better at video editing, esp on after effects, and having those experiences translate to static designs like headers and icons for social media. i didn't learn photoshop until i was like 18? so don't be worried if you're not making the progress you're thinking you should make--people learn at their own pace and in their own way. my sense of design principles and composition came purely from being balls deep in motion graphics for like 80 hours a week for years, and i didn't learn any "proper" design theory until uni. but the fun thing about art is that you don't need proper theory to make things! you just need to be motivated and expose/open yourself to the possibilities, and at its simplest, that just means putting in the work to find cool creations, learning some art history in your free time, exploring rabbit holes that pop up, etc.

it's awesome that you're starting out! and that you're already making "basic" gifs!! basic in quotes, because gifs are hard. i can tell you a good majority of my second yr media arts students struggled with getting started, like learning how the interface flows, how to work with the frame animation timeline, how to draw, even just toggling onion skins--so if you're making things already, you're doing amazing so far!

my general advice would be to try and find styles that are interesting and recreate them. not to post, just to learn the process and train your creative eye. where a lot of beginners stumble is they want to go from 0 to 100, then get frustrated with themselves when they don't get to 100 immediately. the journey is a slog! but just like one of the best ways to learn how to write is to read, one of the best ways to learn how to design is to pay attention. when you see something cool, ask--how did they go about doing this? where is my eye being led? what colours and shapes are influencing how i perceive this? what am i drawn to in particular? how do i use this in my work?

3 mobile games

hi! i am trapped in the prison of mobile gaming due to a tragic lack of computer, so i have lots of time to mobile game! i thought id bring up and review some seemingly undiscovered games i get a kick out of.

the way home

one of my favorites on the list. a pixel roguelike where you play as cheese, a cat-person with a companion named kevin, going out and exploring as you try to find your way home.

the gameplay [notably the combat style] is decent, and the graphics are nice and charming. the story isn't groundbreaking, but i enjoy it so far.

the first island you start on has zero ads, and then from the second island onwards you can either pay to play without ads, or watch ads to help progress. honestly, it's not that bad a deal- gotta make money somehow, and this is the only microtransaction present during the game.

final rating - 8.5/10

magic survival

a hack-and-slash game in which you are a wizard killing shit, leveling up to kill shit better, and trying not to get your shit killed, basically. simple but fun...

...however, i will note that it just... dropped the r slur after the first stage? i feel it could be a translation thing, but, uh, yeah.

the gameplay is very chaotic, but i enjoy it. it definitely keeps you on your toes, waiting for what'll come next. the story... eh. i don't pay much attention. seems interesting, at least?

final rating - 7.5/10

project: clean earth

a hack-and-slash/roguelite in which you are a robot named bernard on a mission to purge earth of dangerous mutants.

i really like this game. i think bernard is cute and i enjoy the gameplay- which is similar to magic survival on account of these two games both being in the same genre, though P:CE has more to it, in my opinion, including upgrades, "proper" levels, and waves/limited level time.

i can't really think of many cons, but i try to avoid being critical where i can. go play 👍

16. What are your writing strengths?

When I’m writing fanfic I think I’m good at capturing the characters’ voices… but I find it really hard in my original writing, where I have to create the voices from scratch. Also, I think I’m pretty funny. At the very least, I make myself laugh.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I’d like to work on my descriptions and scene-setting. (And my smut)

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I avoid doing it because I don't speak any languages and I worry I'll embarrass myself with google translate.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Diana Wynne Jones, unless you count all the Enid Blyton/Rainbow Magic/ Thomas the Tank Engine stuff I wrote in primary school.

20. Favourite fic you've written? 

Oh, it has to be Good Life. It started off so silly but I love the theme: life is meaningless, but we create our own meaning. And somehow the total absurdity of it worked in the theme’s favour, and the whole thing came together so well.

Look, you gotta share that top spot with Makoto, even when dating Izumi. … Don’t ask, just accept it. Also I wanna write more proper Makoto & Ann stuff soon, going a bit more platonic. I gotta showcase their bond! So... If Izuann would be so kind and leave my brain for a few days (not gonna happen... I need to stop hoping).

The sight was… Well, it wasn't exactly out of character, to say the least, and compared to a few instances before this was a tame reaction for Izumi standards. Then again, Makoto had gone through the worst when it came to the fellow idol, way worse than that. Oh back then, when Izumi was still visiting the same school, always showing up from out of nowhere or running up, yelling 'Yuu–Kun~' in the most cheerful yet also unsettling tone he could manage, unintentionally perhaps. Then either clinging onto the blonde with the widest smile or getting ready to chase him around. Needless to say Izumi had never given Makoti a rest back then, all because he was 'looking out for his precious little brother' or something like that. He was truly going through all lengths when it came to taking care of Makoto, to the point it could have been beyond creepy. Nowadays it seems that Izumi seemed to slow down at least, though he would always jump in should he suspect even the slightest danger for Makoto. Sometimes he literally appeared out of nowhere, as if having teleported. Actually… Was it possible to learn such a skill? Izumi would be crazy enough to find a way. Today was such a day… Though it had taken an odd turn regardless.

A month or two back it had been a meeting by chance, right at the arcade. Makoto had been facing off against someone who seemed to be fairly decent at one of the driving games. It had started as a temporary rivalry, at least in the heat of the moment, and it ended in a draw. Needless to say the two were on an even playing field and it was a fun challenge as well as a fun time.

As for who had been his opponent at the time… It was a young woman, a brunette, clearly not from here. Not to mention that she was only slightly smaller than him. Yet the moment she spoke up it was more than obvious that she was a foreigner, given her stuttering speech, mistakes and hints of an accent. Though then again, maybe she had just been nervous. But it was nothing he couldn't handle. It was fairly easy honestly and a few sentences in he got her to calm down. It was just the usual small talk really, nothing too special. And yet it was a pleasant conversation nonetheless.

It was how he met Ann and much to Makoto's surprise she was the new employee at Ensemble Square, one of the translators in charge of overseas affairs. Some liked to believe that it was just a rumor and apparently she had earned herself the title of 'ghost' as a result, even if it was a short lived joke… She was not exactly a ghost after all, just someone hard to spot. Maybe he was lucky. Plus she wasn't so bad to be around… After a while. Sure, it was awkward at first but the tension faded with each passing meeting. In fact, Ann quickly warmed up and turned out to be lively, to say the least. Whenever seeing him she would just run over to greet him or when there is time to spare the two would play some games here and there. They were bonding like this and grew closer. Makoto thought nothing of it and there was no reason to think twice about this… But what does that have to do with anything? Well…

"Hey! What are you doing with Yuu–Kun!?" Izumi suddenly said with a rather loud voice, pointing at Ann right in public. Even though not much happened, not that Makoto knew. The two had literally just met up and greeted each other before Izumi had just come dashing out of literal nowhere, right from the crowd, and suddenly stood right in between the two, looking back and forth with an extremely sharp glare which could make just about anyone freeze in place. It sure had Makoto at a loss for words, not even sure why the gray haired male had suddenly dashed over to them like this. Yet would this one allow them to speak? Of course not, he just continued.

"Now listen up! No matter who you are or what you are, Yuu–Kun is off limits!” He began, the confusion on Ann’s face all too visible. Who wouldn’t be confused to be honest? But the next part baffled him as well, at least to a degree. “I get it! Yuu–Kun has his charm and all, but that doesn’t mean you have to throw yourself onto him all of a sudden!” Wait… Throw herself on him? Where is he getting that idea from!? Why is he even saying something like that!?

“Throw myself on… Makoto–Kun?” Was the only thing coming out of her mouth before Izumi let out a sudden shocked gasp, standing there for long enough to take note of it yet he quickly moved again all the same, or at least his mouth.

“Wha– Makoto–Kun!?”

“Uhm… Is it so—”

Suddenly he just grabbed her shoulders out of literal nowhere, the next sight being shaking her back and forth all of a sudden, as if frustrated with something. He seemed to nearly panic in fact, one way or another. What has gotten into him all of sudden!? It was not exactly unlike him but at the same time… 

“What did you do to Yuu–Kun!? What happened!? Speak up! Now!”

“Hah!? S… Stop and… Calm—”

“Answer me here! What did he do!?”

“What did he do!? Didn’t you asked—”

“Just answer my goddamn question already!”

“Izumi–San, isn’t that a little too far!?” Makoto threw in, unable to bear this sight. He just wasn’t sure what to think of this, seeing Izumi in a state like this of all things… Actually, it hasn’t been long but this entire situation was a puzzle of its own. “Please give Ann–Nee room to breathe! Do you really—”

“Wait a minute… Ann—Nee?” Izumi suddenly paused, his hands letting go of the young woman’s shoulders which allowed her to let out a deep breath, perhaps trying to collect herself after being shaken over and over. His attention turned to the blonde in an instant, first staring at him with shock before letting out a light chuckle, as if trying to mask his embarrassment. “Ah, like an older sister. Of course. I should’ve thought so. Yuu–Kun can do way, waay better than someone like Ann after all~”

“Musst du gerade sagen…” Makoto heard her nearly grumble, though he wasn’t sure what it meant. She seemed a little annoyed at that statement however, even crossing her arms while glaring at Izumi directly from the side. It was not the annoyance one would expect, one filled with anger. It was more like… Well… As if she was calling Izumi a hypocrite just now or something. 

But did Izumi notice? Makoto wasn’t sure. It was an assumption that his senior didn’t but one could never be so sure. He kept on talking regardless, the smirk forced right onto his face. “Of course you can. I have no doubt about it. I was never assuming otherwise.”

“Eh!? Uhm… Right, if you say so…” Makoto agreed by default. Honestly, he was not feeling like keeping up with Izumi’s lectures here. And yet he would be unable to avoid it as now he had been grabbed by the shoulders, Izumi’s grip being surprisingly tight on top of that. And then Makoto was glared at, almost as if he was at the brink of being stabbed here.

“That’s all you two are, right? She’s like a big sister, right?”

“Eh!? Izumi–San!? What’s—”

“Answer my question here Yuu–Kun! No exceptions!”

“Hold on! What—”

“Yuu–Kun~!”

“Izumi–San!? Your face! It’s—”

“I said answer, didn’t I? You know what that means, don’t you?”

Needless to say things got out of hand for quite a while, not even Ann was able to talk some sense into Izumi… In the end she was forced to punch some sense into him… Which meant her whacking him on his head and making him drop onto the ground. And until this day she and Makoto ask themselves what made Izumi have that reaction of all things… Because it certainly was… Something.

I really never know which direction North South East West is。

Behind is South

Forward is North、

I learned it like this but I guess that it's useless if I change the direction I'm facing！

Like even if I right 「East」 on my right hand

If I turn 90 degrees then South would be labelled as East instead。

Usually it's written on the bottom left corner of maps🗺

But if I were to actually get lost in real life then I wouldn't be able to find the correct direction？to start heading in！

Directions are so hard 😕

When I was in Shizuoka I could always see Mount Fuji so I used that as a basis to establish my location…

And a WBW back! So, for Rituals and Red Tape, what sort of company does the protag do accounting for?

So Alex is actually part of what is called the Auditing department, now it's not exactly a 1:1 to the one we have here. There is some overlap but on the whole the folks in the auditing department are the ones who go out into the world and make sure that A. Proper protocols are being followed B. Safety is being maintained in these situations (well as much as safety can be defined) C. Hand out fines for violations and D. Fix problems that others knowing or unknowingly have caused with their improper proceedings.

The first Manager of this department was the one who proposed the name to Dave (the Board member who oversees this part of keeping reality whole) as it was what was closest to the Dreamers comprehension of Dave's goals and ideals.

Now as to the company, see the fun thing is that name is kiiiiinda a misnomer. For all intents and purpose each "department" is a cult, like fully. However it is through the limited understanding of The Board and how Dreamers can process stuff that this is how it all manifests. They serve the whims of their deity and make sure their will is acted on. But, rather than gaining new members, you hire new workers. You are also free to move throughout this "company" until you find your match. If ya want, think of it like how Tolkien "translated" his stories for us readers, this is how the reality is "translated" for those that reside inside of it. And really, what deity is going care as long as they get the worship (work) they demand (hired you for).

Confusing? Maybe. Something that the Dreamers just kind of accept so they can continue on with their eternity? Definitely.

Now this entire thing is situated within a super structure called The Spire. Infinite floors for infinite "departments" many are left abandoned or vacant. Although not all businesses have a place within The Spire, there are smaller startups or locally owned (Denizen ran) shops and services.

To pull back the veil, I thought it would be funny to situate it all this way because large corporations are essentially real life eldritch entities. There is more to I could go over, but gotta leave stuff to get people to read it~
