a real, proper date, one that he had been discussing with his sisters ever since the fateful text had come through inviting him out. jasper had never fully believed he was worthy of love, of someone to see through his little isms—jayden had made him feel as though he was an entire person with thoughts, with feelings, and with something to offer. he had dressed rather casually, knowing that this was far from a wine-and-dine situation with a candlelit table and food on the menu he couldn't pronounce. black pants, a button-up shirt and a neckerchief protected him from the november cold, draped in a jacket that swamped his small body. already he had sent photos of his outfit to ophelia and joanna. they had responded with a flutter of emojis—hearts, shocked faces, confetti cannons—to hype up the youngest sibling. as was tradition, jasper arrived ten minutes before they had agreed. he stood, arms bundled over his chest, breathing into cupped frozen palms, until the handsome face that had taken over ever waking thought faded through the mist and into view. Ace is out for the day, running errands as she always does on Saturdays. it leaves Lucille alone for the day, running the shop, which she has no problems with. she gets her Fridays and Ace gets her Saturdays, it works just fine for her. there's a black cat sitting on the windowsill, their little shop cat, Tomas, who is currently begging for attention from a young woman, making Lucille smile as she approaches them. "i think Tomas likes you. it's okay to pet him, you know. he doesn't bite."

"i don't know w-what's gotten into 'em." thankfully, he's able to get the dogs under control, pulling them to his legs to wrap himself around them. he's embarrassed.
