What do you think about Ricky? I'm honestly starting to dislike his character. I know he's been dealing with a lot since his parents split but he's become pretty selfish and self centered. I'm curious about what to expect of him in season 3? Like Carlos said he can't Zac Efron his way through camp.
Oooh, i've been wanting to make a post on this for a while so thanks for this ask!!
Honestly, I love Ricky's character. I don't defend him on his bad behavior (like the way he treated Gina in season 2), but I think antis give him such a hard time when he's been through so much, and frankly don't think he deserves all of it. People really started hating Ricky in season 2, both on the Gina side and on the Nini side. But we gotta see things from his perspective. All his life everything has been the same. Then one summer day everything falls apart, and he doesn't know how to react because all he can think about is how did this happen? So, to me, it makes sense he's thinking about himself the whole time. How this will affect him, what his life will be like from now on, how do you recover from this? Of course, that's no excuse to treat people badly, or to try to hold onto something that isn't there anymore making it so much harder for everyone around him to deal with him. However, i think we need to start empathising a little more with his situation. When he got back with Nini, of course he didn't want her to go, physically (moving away) and emotionally (pulling away because they don't see each other anymore). He became clingy and annoying to daring Nini who didn't want to do anything but see ahead. But again, we can't blame him entirely for it. Nini had been his rock for their whole lives, which it's such a big pressure to put on someone, but he couldn't help it when the people who were supposed to be his rock (his parents) were so unstable.
Ricky's selfishness isn't rooted from a "this is my world and I'm so much better than all of you" point of view, it's from a "if I don't try to stop this, i will literally fall apart right now" point of view. That's why it's so easy for me to empathise with him. It's been hard for me to adapt to new change for all my life. I haven't actually tried to hold anyone back so nothing changes before like Ricky, but I understand why he would do that. And that's not even mentioning the insane responsibility of being the adult in his family. When his dad is feeling down about the divorce in season 1, Ricky picks him up so easily it makes me think it isn't the first time he's had to do that. Idk what other times he would need to pick his dad up like that, but it saddened me to see how naturally it came for him. Ricky's parents were so crappy honestly. They had their own stuff to deal with, sure, but sometimes it's like they forget Ricky's their son and not their buddy. But that's beside the point.
I think season 3 Ricky has something big coming for him. As @insomniactalks so eloquently has explained before, Ricky's arc and plot is much bigger than Rini or Rina or whatever, it's about finding himself and what his role in the world is. I truly believe Ricky wasn't shown that much in the trailer because Tim wants his big arc to not be revealed all at once. I'm very excited to see what season 3 can give Ricky.
As for auditions, maybe he'll have a binge night of Frozen, idrk, but I hope he gets some real competition this time lol. I also hope he doesn't immediately get the lead, especially because we've seen him as the lead for the last 2 season and to see him taking a backseat would be good for him maybe. Or maybe I'm just projecting my desire of side character Ricky 😂
I just want the guy to be happy this season, nothing else. I want him to find himself, figure out how to get through his phase of "every change sucks", and have fun at summer camp with his friends.

I agree with everything you said. Ricky is going to realize that Gina knows what he's going through a TON better than Nini. I see Ricky REALLY trying this season. They made him look like a douche last season and i hated it. I hated the way they always frame poor nini as the victim when she spent maybe 8 consecutive episodes putting him down and yelling at him. Gina has been the constant since she showed up. I hope Nini regrets going to that school. He deserves much better
Hot takes! I love it.
I agree that in season one they chose to frame Ricky in a really.... interesting light. We were supposed to root for him while sympathizing with Nini’s plight, and it mostly left a bad taste in my mouth. Eventually the problem is “solved” when Nini realizes what Ricky was going through, but did it get solved? I disagree.
I really thought they were going to use that crossroads to let the Rini storyline end and pick up with the Gina x Ricky plot line instead. But then they didn’t. Here’s to hoping that season two does them justice.
