What's in a name? (Analysing all the names in stranger things)

*I'll be repeating some names more than once as I break down categories .

Show , book, and tv easterggs

Alot of character names may have deeper meaning but some are also refs to stories they liked. The stranger writers twitter posted a list of movies said to inspire s4 (which I’ll be referencing).

Dart- dustin names him this after d'artagenean (a 3 musketeers book character) and one of Dustin's fav candies (3 muskateers). Similarly his pet turtle yurtle is implied to be named after the dr Seuss’ story 'yertle the turtle'.

Brenner- main character from 'the birds', which was on the st s4 list.

Byers- john byers from x files. The duffers mentioned x files was an inspo for the show. Although John byers (from x files) resembles Murray as an unhinged conspiracy theorist. The documentary paradise lost was also cited as inspo for st- john byers and his son, terry, Michael, and Steve were names in said film

Jim Hopper- in Predator (another st inspo) he was a soldier who was flayed to death in the woods. Another character in the film with a similar fate was “Hawkins”.

Detective Wheeler and elle Holloway- from silent Hill franchise. Another ref mentioned by the Duffers. Holloway was the surname of st's Heather. Elle (is el) and Wheeler is Mike's surname. Wheeler was also on the ep of twiglight zone (another cited ref by the duffers) . In the ep 'mute' sheriff wheeler takes in a mute psychic girl as his foster daughter. So some hints at hopper too . Hopper even mentions el-anor (gilipse) in s1. The surname of a main character in the silent hill series.Lt. Colonel Sullivan (s4) could be a eastergg of silent hill 4 which had a Sullivan character.

Henderson- st twitter mentioned how all the bond films were on the s4 inspiration list . So Dustin's surname being the same as one of the bond characters is a nod. Duffers also mentioned ‘freaks & geeks’ as inspo- and 1 character’s surname was also Henderson (another nod).

Mrs Driscoll (from s3) - a nod to invasion of the body snatchers which was mentioned as inspo by the Duffers. And clear inspo for s3.

Powell (cop and partner of hopper ) - diehard films also on s4 list. He's named after the cop powell.

Callahan (cop and partner of Hopper) - father Callahan ref. He shows up in many of Stephen King novels. The Duffers have cited over 10 novels and books from him as inspo for st

Nancy- she's called ‘Nancy drew’ (from the novels). And the duffers have mentioned they are fans of elmstreet - who's main character was Nancy. Nancy also references 'Oliver twist" ,and that book has a character named Nancy in it. Nancy was also a first Lady in the 80s similar to her friend Barbara- who was also a first Lady in the 80s.Nancy's name might also be inspired by "Nancy Wheeler", a secondary character in the 1970 book Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret written by Judy Blume.

Fred (s4)- apparently a high-school journalist who may be friend or foe. This one is a stretch but given nancy maybe being an elmstreet ref- and her enemy being fred-die kreuger. Fred may have animosity to Nancy and that's why his name is Fred. I mean ... they even cast a new s4 character with Freddie kreuger's original actor.so...

Jason (s4) - is in the 1986 Nancy drew novel (when s4 takes place). He is similar to the duffers description. In the novel he's a rich, popular, arrogant jock and blackmailing students at the high-school . S3 even named one of its episodes after a nancy drew novel- so wouldn't surprise me.

Christie carpenter (s4/reffed in s1 by hopper)- christie is the main character in the hellraiser series (which is on the s4 st list). Carpenter is the surname of the director of 'the thing' name dropped in s3. (The flesh monster in s3 also resembles the thing) , and in s1 mr clarke watches it ,and mike has the thing movie poster in his basement.

Argyle (s4) - die hard 1-2 were on the s4 st list. And is a name of a diehard character.

Max- her name is 'mad max' like the 80s film. But since the Duffers like videogames. Her name may be a ref to max caufield from the ‘life is strange’ game as well. She has a 'never Maxine rule' similar to max in st. But the game character is similar to jonathan as she is a teen photographer and says similar words to jonathan in s1 saying she would rather watch people through a camera than interact with them.

Eddie munson (s4)- not going to lie. I have no proof of this but I immediately thought of the TV character Eddie Munster (the friendly monster ).

Possible comic book easteggs

The duffers are no stranger to comic book references. The duffers have already directly reffed xmen, wonderwoman, and green lantern. Kali's place also has a comic book ref to 'the invisibles' on the wall. While the s4 movie list mentions thor ragnock , age of ultron, and 2 batman films. Some of these refs will go over your head if you haven't read my DID theory. But a lot of this analysis will still be enjoyable. :)

Jane st ives (jane ives aka el). marvel. (jane st ives sees her dad k*ll her mom and vows revenge against him.Sort of similar to what brenner did to terry).

Stephanie harrington (Steve harrington)- 80s marvel comic. DP.7. Will DID ref. Antibody, is a medical resident who can project from his body a dark figure of himself (also called an "antibody", a word play on the medical term) that flies, can become intangible, and transfer its memories to another person by physical contact (mindflayer). He later merges with the antibody. like how susie refs ‘wizard of earthsea’ -the novel where the young wizard Ged releases a shadow monster (said to be an ancient evil) but it turns out to be the dark aspects of his personality and the only way for the chaos to stop is to accept his darkness and merge as 1.

Barry bauman (Murray bauman) . marvel comics - Will did easteregg.Bauman lived in never ending darkness. He felt, that there was a realm outside the darkness and started to explore the entire content of his brain thus using now more than the usual 10 % .Also had telekinesis.He turned his attention to the stars in order to exact revenge on the human race which spends billions of dollars to kill each other, but wouldn't spend the mere million or so it would have cost to cure him. For his vengeance he transported the suns near our galaxy into his omnipotent brain. As the people of Earth would learn of the disappearing of the suns they would panic and feel Bauman's loneliness before he would destroy Earth.Despite the death of his physical body, Bauman's consciousness somehow survived and began hopping from body to body throughout the galaxy, his powers growing until the Star Thief was recognized as a major threat to galactic society.

Sinclair- last name of xmen rhaine. Will Did ref. storyline Rahne Sinclair is mentally bonded to Havok against her will(Will/mf).She is subsequently manipulated by the Shadow King. Her bond with Havok causes her to act irrationally, sometimes threatening teammates, sometimes by flirting with them. She undergoes more than one attempt to undo the bonding, with varying results. Her instability also manifests in many odd dreams, in which her identity is merged into pop culture figures. What’s funny is charlie heaton (jonathan byers) was just in an xmen movie with this Rhaine character.

Victor creel (s4)-sounds like mutant victor creed of the xmen comic. x men Mutant with ab*sive dad and poor socioeconomic background. He had a "birthday tradition" of ab*sing his young relatives on their birthdays. Which reminds me of Lonnie making jonathan cry for a week (because he forced him to k*ll a rabbit on his b-day). Not to mention Lonnie is prob coming back for Will’s b day in s4... so... the name is prob a ref to that ‘birthday tradition’. Could also be a stephen king reference -since Duffers love him. The Creel family was in sk’s book “pet cemetary’-which fun fact (the actress who plays El’s aunt is in the recent remake)!

Yuri (s4)-Yuri Topolov (Russian: Юрий Тополов) was a Soviet scientist and the first foe of the Hulk.

Dimitri (s4)-Dmitri Bukharin was born in Kuibyshev, Russia (some sources say Moscow). First appeared in Iron man.

Peter ballard ( s4 character) may just be a hellfire ref . since I guy with last name ballard was a double agent for the hellfire club (name of st s4 ep 1). And ballard means bald which the actor is certainly not lol. I don't think he's literally associated with hellfire but its just a ref. And because its implied in his st character summary despite working for the mental hospital-where brenner is most likely at- he's horrified by the treatment of the psych patients. So that may be where the double agent aspect would come into play.

Ian Hargrove (billy hargrove)- batman comics. had a history of mental health problems dating back to childhood, which his parents were unable to afford treatment for. His brother John hargrove tried to keep him out of trouble but Ian developed an uncanny talent for explosives (will the wise fire powers). He ends up at Archam asylum. Cough billy is Will's alter. Why he has the name billy (a nickname for William) . Jonathan in s2 mentions how he likes the writer vonnegut- who wrote slaughter house 5- the main character was Billy. Already mentioned how it connects to my did theory .

Jason carver (s4)- carver is the last name of the comic hero thunderbolt (in the flash)-the first name of thunderbolt is Will and his brother is named Lonnie. There was also a John carver in the comic.

Holland (barb's last name) last name of Swamp thing. I think its plot has quite a few s4/5 spoilers but Im not diving into it right now.

Names associated with religions or mythology

(if you’ve read my DID theory- some themes will appear relevant in relation WIll’s alters or to WIll’s past/tr*uma).

-‘Kali prasad".Kali is the name of a Hindu goddess . Kali’s iconography and mythology commonly associate her with death, violence, s*xuality, but also paradoxically -motherly love. In myths ‘she only k*lls demons’ and is described as ‘overflowing with incomprehensible love for her children’ - (aka ST’s Kali k*lling people from hawkins lab for hurting kids). Her third eye stands for wisdom (like Will the wise).Kali is called at times ‘ the bright fire of truth’ (will the wise/fire powers).The devotee makes her image in his heart and under her influence burns away all limitations and ignorance in the cremation fires. This inner cremation fire in the heart is the gyanagni (fire of knowledge), which kali bestows (cough Will the wise-fire powers). The goddess also could create a darkcloud of lightning (similar to the mf). The phrase “brilliant as a dark cloud” is a snippet of one such prayer dedicated to Kali.The name Kali is derived from the Hindu word that means “time”. Kali receives her name because she devours ‘kala’ (Time)- like clocks ticking when El sees demogorgan/clock being wonky when Will see mf/clocks in s4 promos.’ After devouring time she resumes her own dark formlessness. “This transformative effect can be metaphorically illustrated in the West as a black hole in space” (cough mf cough hopper blackhole/time refs). Kali’s s2 butterfly-“Kali is the Hindu goddess associated with eternal energy. ... The cocoon, butterfly and the karmic golden wheel reflect Her deep connection with life.”And Prasād (her last name) is a material substance that is a religious offering to gods in Hinduism .

-While, EL is the name of a Cannanite (male) god associated with “salt water “ (pool filled with salt in s1) who “dwelled in a tent” (in s1 Mike’s blanket fort) .And his gray-beard was described as " "full of wisdom.” él’ in Spanish means ‘he’- which could be a nod at her ( androgynous) presentation in s1. El can also be translated to "God" or 'god'. The el character has various mythologies depending on which culture/ religion is using the term 'el'. In the post-biblical period, "el" became a regular element in the names of angels such as "Gabri·el," "Micha·el," and "Azri·el," to denote their status as divine beings.And Jane translates to " Yahweh (god) is gracious/merciful". The cannanite god El was also dubbed “Compassionate God of Mercy.” Earlier, a ninth century B.C.E. inscription identifies Ēl- the name of the Babylonian water god Ea, lord of the watery subterranean abyss (cough watery dark void in st). Terry (el’s mom-aka Teressa) was originally used in the Middle Ages for a “child baptized in holy water” (El in the sensory water tank/Terry used it too,according to Becky in s1). Eleanor (called this in s1)- can mean "sun ray" (possible the opposite of the ‘shadow monster’ or Kali who can represent a “black hole”).

-Will-the s4 st movie lists (‘red dragon’, gods of monsters, & ‘blade runner’ ) mention the artist and writer William Blake (specifically his painting of the angel michael fighting a dragon in revelations - reffed in st s1). He was one of many painters part of the exhibition of “ The World Turned Upside Down: Apocalyptic Imagery.”The World Turned Upside Down explores the myriad ways that artists in England visualized the apocalypse in a period fraught with political, religious, economic, and cultural change.

During this period Blake was commissioned to create over a hundred paintings intended to illustrate books of the Bible along with revelations . He also drew illustrations for the novel Dante’s inferno. Blake’s brutally satirizes oppressive authority in church and state.He said those who proclaim restrictive moral rules and oppressive laws as “goodness” are in themselves evil. Hence to counteract this repression, Blake announces that he is of the “Devil’s Party” (cough hellfire club ref-and dissing the satanic panic of the hellfire club and other marginilised groups) . He also says “men forgot that All deities reside in the human breast.” So Instead of looking for God on remote altars, Blake warns, man should look within.He produced a diverse and symbolically rich œuvre, which embraced the “imagination as “the body of God.” He wrote his own stories based on biblical writings- one includes the fire wielding character of Los (will the wise) who represented jesus. Los (like jesus does in revelations) causes the destruction of the world and the second judgment unfolds. The poem ends with Los’s unfallen state rising up and shepherding in science and removing the dark religions. I also talked about how this story ‘book of los’ hints at the DID theory-but this is getting long-so you can just read the explanation here if interested. Also, hellooo Both names are William B(yers/lake). Billy (a alter of Will-sharing the name William) in s3 he even wore “lady of pillar” medallion- i.e about jesus/mary.

JOHN (supposedly Jesus’ blood relative- who wrote ‘revelations’.) In scripture John was called “the disciple whom Jesus loved as a brother” .Fire is the most typical element associated with the Saint John's Eve celebration (Jonathan did light the demogorgan on fire). Many scholars consider John & Jesus ("apocalyptic prophets"). Jonathan itself translates to " yahweh (god ) has given" in Hebrew.

Michael- Similar to kali, he’s a religious figure known for killing demons. He’s the arch-angel from the book of revelations (Apocalypse). A evil Beast (with seven heads usually translated to ‘satan’ or ‘dragon’) appears .“it was a 7″ causes Will to be attacked by the demogorgan ( which in d&d is a demon with multiple heads). The Archangel MICHAEL fought and defeated this 7 headed beast/satan. Corresponding with Mike at the end of s1 writing a fictional d&d story for Will (based off defeating the demogorgan) which was about helping kill a 7 HEADED MONSTER! Michael is also the archangel who oversees on Earth the natural element of fire (Mike telling Will the wise to use ‘fireball’ to defeat this same 7 headed monster in the game, at the end of s1)! Ironically though Jesus /Christian god is also associated with 7s a lot (he has 7 angels and during the apocalypse causes 7 plagues , he has 7 candles etc .)cause the number seven, represented ‘perfection’ according to ancient numerology . Will’s b day is March 22- (3) +2+2 =7 (“it was a 7”). Will’s bday even falls in what christians call “the holy week”( the week immediately preceding Easter.) At the end of s1 they even defeat this 7 headed monster because Will rolls a 14 (which can be broken down into two 7s). Michael & William also have 7 letters in each of their names respectively- equating to this 14. This dragon biblical story (of Michael) is also William blake’s most popular painting. Also, random fact in revelations god has a rainbow throne (with thunder /lightning -will the wise powers- coming from the throne, and seven lit torches next to it ) . He also wears a rainbow halo. Lol. Michael also roughly translates to ( 'Who like el?' The answer being roughly translated to ' no one like el' ... which i mean literally is saying there is no one similar to her. But I still think its a linguistic pun/ burn that Mike is not actually into El romantically).

Jim (James) hopper- According to the s3 script Hopper’s real name is James. JAMES (JIM) was an apostle to jesus- brother of john. And in the bible was called a ’son of thunder ’. Will’s powers/ hopper being an alter of Will's so technically brother of jonathan and thunder powers. Not to mention David on Instagram saying hopper has " he has risen. like bread" is a Jesus ref to 'he has risen"... even the bread ref could be a catholic ref to the last supper.

Martin Brenner/marsha holland- have their first name reference the roman god Mars who was originally a ‘thunder or storm deity’ (will the wise/mf powers). EL (in cannanite mythology) also allowed Baal the storm god to rule the entire earth.

ROBIN- was the God of Thunder’s- Thor’s- favorite bird. And Dustin also means ‘Thor’s stone.’The red belly robin is also an important bird in Christianity. Legend has it that the robin got its red belly from a fire in which it was trying to protect Jesus. Robin also name drops the greek god prometheus- the god of fire (will the wise) who brought human beings life and knowledge. And Steve looks at Robin and says "let there be light" a biblical passage. The robin represents selflessness for a higher truth.

Barb- Saint BARBara- dad kept her locked away from the outside world (like el/brenner) . He tried to k*ll her when he learned she didn’t believe in his religion- so the dad was punished by “god” who electrocuted him with lightning/lit him on fire. (Will the wise powers).

Nancy- is derived from a medieval diminutive of Annis, an English form of Agnes. There’s the christian saint Agnes- who was beautiful and from a wealthy family. She was the Christian saint of girls and v*rginity . And the duffers subverted this along with the problematic horror movie trope of the ' v*rgin female heroine surviving while her more se*ually liberated female friends are punished by the villain' ( by having her survive specifically because she decided to have s*x).Agnes was also led out and bound to a stake, but (allegedly) the bundle of wood would not burn, or the flames parted away from her (will the wise fire powers). Also people claimed that any man who tried to r*pe her was struck blind.

Hopper's wife’s name -Dianne- is also the roman goddess of ,nature, hunting and wild animals( and greek equivalent to Artemis) .Becky means ‘snare’ -for hunting animals .Teressa (Terry) means ' huntress'. The name was originally used in the Middle Ages for a child baptized in holy water . Name of 2 saints-Teresa of Avila and Therese of Lisieux. Lonnie’s gf (Cynthia) was originally an epithet of the Greek goddess Artemis, as well.

Power couple Angela & jake (s4) - Angela means 'messenger of God". And Jake (also means ”supplanter”) is derived from jacob. Jacob was the son of Isaac and Rebecca in genesis. El’s aunt,Becky (Rebecca) is wife of isaac.Other theories claim that Jacob is in fact derived from a hypothetical name like יַעֲקֹבְאֵל (Ya'aqov'el) meaning "may God protect".The name jacob is also where the names James/jim is derived from.

couple Steve spies on in s3- Anna Jacobi & Mark Lewinsky. Anna ( name of the mother of the Virgin Mary) Jacobi ("he who supplants"-aka same meaning as jim since both names are derived from jacob). Mark (”the god mars”-same meaning as martin brenner) .Lewinsky (lion-same name meaning as Lonnie). Also derived from the Hebrew root לוי‎ (leví, “priest”)

Joyce means "lord". Could also be a ref to the ('unofficial') saint Joyce who gave up wealth to live in poverty.

Ted-is the short form of the names Theodore and Edward. Theodore is a Greek name meaning "gift of God", Edward has an English origin and means "wealthy guard." Eddie (from s4) also means ‘wealthy guard”

Holly (nancy and Mike's sis)- Holly meanings are 'One who is pious' or 'sacred'

Karen- can be short for Katherine-one of the first christian saints.”Saint Katherine of the Wheel “(er). A 4th century martyr who suffered t*rture on a spiked wheel. Wheeler does mean ‘occupational name for a maker of wheels’ after all.

Gospel of LUKE (lucas?) , or simply Luke, tells of the origins, birth, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ.

Sinclair- Catholic saint of computers and TV screens (i mean... he is in the av club).

MAXimilian was deemed a saint in the 1980s- saint of journalists and radios. (Both aspects of s3)

Saint stephen/steven ( STEVE)-an early disciple and deacon . Considered one of the first m*rtyrs of the church.Stephen is first mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as one of seven deacons appointed by the Apostles to distribute food (lol icecream) .According to Orthodox belief, he was the eldest and is therefore called “archdeacon”.

Sara- Her name is a feminine form of sar (Hebrew: שַׂר‎), meaning “chieftain” or “prince." She was the wife and sister of Abraham (ew -given her being an alter of Will though, such a name doesn’t surprise me). Similar to st Barabara’s dad - Abraham tried to k*ll his son isaac in the name of god. Becky (El's aunt) - is derived from Rebecca - wife of Isaac.

Claudia (Dustin's mom)- Christian woman of Rome greeted by Paul in his second letter to Timothy (in the bible).

Sam mayfield (max's dad) - Short for Samuel or Samantha, from the Biblical name Shemu'el, which means "God has heard", from the Hebrew shama, meaning "heard" and el, meaning "God". Samuel is rumored to be argyle first name.

Marsha Kelly (s4)- Kelly means "frequents churches" or " bright headed". Given she's a counselor the bright headed pun makes sense. But maybe she's not to be trusted if she frequents churches during a satanic panic arc which was fueled by Christian religious extremism . Or she's someone who contrasts the rest of the religious people in town since she's not originally from hawkins...who knows. x files’ main character was catholic but in one ep she criticized a small town for the satanic panic occurring-and says how accusing these kids who listen to rock as satanic or being k*llers is ludicrous.

Peter ballard (s4) - Peter was also the name of an apostle.

Tina (side character s2)- like christy (s4) it’s short for Christina which translates to "follower of christ" or 'stream'. Tina was the gal who hosted the t halloween party and also the name of one of Erica’s friends in s3.

Samantha (goth girl jonathan talks to in s2 party) translates to "told by god".

Tommy (s1-2) "God's gift" or "twin".Thomas is the Greek variation of the Aramaic name Ta’oma’. It came about because there were too many apostles named Judas; Jesus renamed one Thomas—meaning "twin"—to distinguish him from Judas Iscariot and the Judas also known as Thaddeus.

carol (tommy’s gf)- Carol is the short form of Caroline and the meaning is derived from the English vocabulary word for “song” or “hymn". A hymn being a religious song or poem.

Benny ( who helped El at his dinner) - originally derived from latin bennedictus which means "blessed"

Stacey (s2-3 ) rejected dustin at dance. Stacey- "resurrection "

Grigori (the guy following and tracking hopper, Joyce, and alexi)- The name was adopted by early Christians heedful of the Biblical passage located in 1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober-minded; be watchful."grigory now means 'watchful and vigalent'

Alexi- prob based on the russian folklore story of alexy. A clever priest's son who tricks a dragon.

Harrington- similar to Robin's religious animal iconography. Harrington means 'he goat'.The most popular image of the Satanic goat dates back to the ever-mysterious Knights of Templar, who were accused of worshipping an idol known as Baphomet (a 1/2 human 1/2 goat man). Roman Catholic society decried it as a demon that demanded human sacrifice — but it would take a few more centuries before the goat became a truly occult symbol.Anton Lavey adopted Baphomet as the sigil of the Church of Satan in 1966, and it has appeared on countless metal album covers. But, Baphomet isn't the lone source of inspiration for our goat-like depictions of Satan.it's also believed that early Christians, seeking to demonize preexisting Pagan traditions, drew comparisons between the Devil and the Greek god Pan (god of nature), who happened to resemble a goat.Some cited how in revelations- during the apocalypse- Jesus separates the 'lambs from the goats'. ( supposedly Good vs bad)

Given the fact s3 alluded to the satanic panic. A Christian movement in the 80s that demonized and said d&d ,rock music, homosexuality, other religions, stephen King,horror films, wearing black,and non conservative ideology were 'satanic.' I wouldn't be surprised by this possible ref. Heck even William Blake criticized similar religious movements in his own time period. Several movies from the s4 list allude to this. The most obvious being the documentary paradise lost (named after the fictional retelling of satan/adam and eve story) - the documentary directly focuses on a witch hunt of rock loving teens (wrongfully accused of m*rders) in a small town during the satanic panic. Not to mention ironically s4 is hinted to be around easter. So Using such symbolism to address religious fundamentalism and the bigotry/hysteria it can cause isn't surprising. No i’m not lumping all religious people into this negative category- obviously.

name meaning : becky - snare (a trap for catching birds or animals). Teressa-huntress. Dianne/Cynthia (Hopper’s ex wife/Lonnie’s gf) - is a roman/greek goddess of hunting and wild animals. Rhadaghast- Will's password for cb is a lothr wizard who protects forests/wildlife.martin/marsha- previously god of agriculture/plants.As an agricultural guardian, he was believed to directed his energies toward creating conditions that allow crops to grow, which may include warding off hostile forces of nature (pumpkins rotting in s2). El in phoenician culture was called Elus and its Greek equivalent Cronus (god of agriculture) steve- he goat- associated with pan- god of fields, groves, wooded glens . brenner- ‘someone who cleared forests by burning’. the blond women, Brenner worked with, Fraizer- “of the forrest men”

* FUN FACT: Kali’s name originally was going to be ‘Roman’ (which is derived from Romulus-the son of Mars... aka Martin Brenner) .

Trees

Ives and owens- ives means 'yew wood' while Owen means 'yew tree. ' bauman- nickname for someone who lived near a tree.comes from the German word "baum," or "boum" in Middle High and Old German, meaning "tree’. Jennifer hayes- Jennifer derived from Old English words "jenefer", "genefer" and "jinifer", all of which were variants of Juniper used to describe the juniper tree.Lonnie means "oak tree; or lion". In contrast to Lonnie, Will can mean "desiring peace. " Axel who is part of Kali’s crew (who i think Will created along with others ) even means "father is peace."

Twin

Tom (Heather's dad) and Tommy mean ‘twin’. Robin's crush Tammy ('twin') Thompson ( 'son of tom’).

it’s definitely peculiar to repeat names like this in a story. Unless it means ...something... I talked about how David was mentioning alot of doppelganger/twin imagery recently-here. So the name mirroring could just be an allusion to the Will/WW arc coming up ...possibly?

Who's your favorite Matsu? How would you rank them?

I HATTEEE RANKING MY POOR BOYS I LOVE THEM ALL BUT!!

Number one is definitely karamatsu… I love them all equally except karamatsu, he is a bit higher up than them.. there is something about him.. he tries so hard to be charming and cool (when he obviously isn’t) but he ends up being charming and adorable to me anyways lol (I also apparently have a thing for his nap. VA since all my favs end up having the same VA it’s funny.. EX; hawks, kurro, bruno, gojo)

Number two is always so hard for me to place because it changes so much. I always end up switching Osomatsu and Ichimatsu around (at one point Choromatsu and even Jyushimatsu was there) but for now I’ll place number two with Osomatsu. Out of all the matsus I relate to him the most so I’m placing him here! I’m extremely childish and selfish like him and hate the idea of growing up and rely on my parents too much. He’s a comfort to me for these reasons, and just the idea of an ass like him being soft gets to me.

Next is Ichimatsu! His love for cats is extremely relatable, in fact I remember back in 2016 he was my favorite because of that reason alone lol. I suffer with depression so naturally he’s one of the more relatable ones, he dresses more baggy or more “lazy” if you will, with his baggy pants and hoodie and fucking flip flops. This mf dresses just like me fr. I’m shy irl so it’s nice to see this dark and brooding character actually be a pussy deep down, very funny and relatable since ppl irl find me scary lol.

Next up I’ll place Choromatsu here. Man it does make me sad to see so many people hate on my boy! One thing I tend to notice is that with my top favs I have a very popular fav and then a overhated fav, it’s funny. But seriously love this guy wtf! I’ll be honest, at one point he was probably my least fav but he has climbed up on my ranking. I can appreciate that he at least tries to be better than his brothers, being self aware is an admirable trait at the very least. I like how he’s mainly good hearted and seems to value honesty (more than the others) also I find it so funny his VA is the same as levi… like what 😭

Next up is Jyushimatsu! Absolutely adore this guy. I feel bad he’s so damn low on this list:( I hate ranking them my goddd.. love him though! He is so comforting and so sweet man wtf. Also I love projecting onto him and giving him the hc he’s autistic just bc it’s fun and he’s a comfort character. I project a lot of my favorite things onto him (ex I love Pokémon so I hc he likes playing Pokémon, I absolutely love Steve lacy so I like to hc he loves Steve lacy and etc.) I would just love to hug this guy, it really doesn’t help that he’s probably a perfect match for me (and Kara too lol) because I’m so shy and quiet.

And finally totty:( my boy I AM SO SORRY HES LAST TOTTY FANS I ADORE HIM ALL THE SAME ;( I think he’s a very funny character and I find him relatable in the aspect he kinda tries hard to have a social life and to fit in, it’s really hard for me to fit in :0 I think I relate more to ichi in that aspect but it still counts right?! love his god awful fashion and I can always adore a character that seems cute but is actually the devil. I hate his mischaracterization with people acting like he’s actually heartless, when he shows he does actually care for people (like totoko) but his brothers too of course (even his father when he was in the hospital?) I don’t like how people write him to actually not give a shit about his s/o when I think while he has his moments he’d be very caring !

Shivering, I clutch the bags in my hands tightly, waiting silently for Namjoon to return from the bathroom - I kinda wish the shopping centre didn’t have toilets located outside of the large building. Maybe it was so its easier for costumers of the clothes store to access a restroom without having to waddle back inside?

I shrug the thought away with a huff, watching a cloud of smoke appear in front me, “hurry up Namjoon.” I whisper to myself, shifting awkwardly from foot to foot, “first a bus stop and now outside a public restroom?” A voice chuckles - instantly catching my attention.

“O-Oh, um! I’m actually waiting for a friend of mine, he’s - you know..” Smiling awkwardly, I sniff and look up at the person speaking. “Wait, bus stop?” My mouth literally hangs open at sight of the person standing before me. “Your the guy from last night, right?”

The man nods, giving me a wide smile, “so, do you need help carrying those bags?” He asks out of the blue, fiddling with his beanie before gazing back at me. Clearing my throat awkwardly I shake my head, “no I’m fine. My friend, he should be out soon.”

“You sure? It looks like you’ve been standing out here for awhile, your lips are practically blue, you know?” I instantly gasp, transferring some bags from one hand to the other to touch my lips. “No way! They aren’t are they? Please tell me your lying!”

Panic washes over me as I rub furiously at my lips, attempting to warm them with the constant friction. The man before me merely laughs at my actions, “it was a mindless joke. Don’t be so serious,” he chuckles, shifting in his spot to lean against a pillar. I huff and drop my hand to my side, “that wasn’t funny.”

The man hums, eyeing me up and down with a questionable look, I gulp at his odd action and avert my gaze from him. “Are you always filled with so much anxiety?”

What?

Raising an eyebrow, I glance at the man, “sorry?” I retort, grasping tighter onto the bags in my hands. The mans quirks a brow, wetting his lips before speaking yet again; “you’re always so anxious. Its intoxicating,” he says. Confusing me even more, fazed I blink once - twice.

What?

“Nevermind,” he utters, scuffing the toe of his shoe on the concrete beneath him. Nodding, I glance at the mens bathroom, relieved to finally see Namjoon walking out; his hands tucked neatly into the pockets of his coat.

“Ah, (Y/n), sorry to keep you waiting - there was a, erm, a line.”

“Its fine, c-can we just go? Its really cold,” Namjoon nods slowly, his eyes flickering towards the man lent against the pillar. “Did something happen?” He asks, taking a handful of bags from me. I simply shake my head and smile, “no.”

“You sure-”

“Nothing happened, he was just keeping me company while you were busy.”

Namjoon hums, “okay. Thanks man,” he murmurs the last part, walking off leaving me to trail behind him. The faint echo of the mans goodbye filling the oddly quiet parking lot.

Waddling back into my small home, I dump the bags I was carrying onto the couch, flopping lifelessly onto the floor with a faint oh my god. I’d purchased so much while out with Namjoon, maybe a bit too much.

My poor wallet.

Sighing, I roll onto my back and stare up at my boring ceiling, “your bunny (Y/n).” Namjoon sputters from above me, crouching over my thighs and holding the wriggling rabbit in his hands. “Found him buried under your kimono, he wouldn’t stop smelling the damn thing.”

Giggling, I take Jungkook from his hands, placing him onto my chest - the ball of fur quickly hopping over to my neck and beginning to sniff and lick the area. “Gosh you,” I say between laughs, “you’re so clingy.”

“He likes you.. alot, I think I’m jealous.” Namjoon laughs, walking into the kitchen to boil the jug. Grinning, I sit up, being sure to keep Jungkook in his spot since he seems to comfortable there. “Is that a confession Mr Kim?”

Snicking, Namjoon leans against the tall island between the kitchen and living room - his brows raised. “Its whatever you want it to be,” he says, tossing me a wink. I instantly break into a fit of giggles, a raging blush colouring my cheeks.

“Fuck you,” I shriek, listening to the jug flick off, Namjoon shuffling toward it and pouring the hot water into his cup. “Can you make me a hot chocolate please,” I ask. Pecking Jungkook’s forehead gently, “yeah.” Is all Namjoon says in response. I thank him in return, deciding to gently run my fingers through Jungkook’s fur.

Dumb move.

Flinching, the bunny in my warmth drops from his spot and into my lap with a grunt, frowning I pick him back up and coo, “sorry my little baby.” I apologise, noticing Namjoon walking over with both our drinks, I mouth a thank you and take my mug from his hand.

“So,” Namjoon starts taking a long sip of his drink, “who was that guy earlier?” Sighing, I look up at Namjoon from my drink, “an acquaintance? I dunno, we only met last night.”

“Where?”

“At the bus stop.”

“The bus stop?” He gawks, leaning forward in his seat, “yes! The bus stop, I was sitting and eating!”

“Seriously? You could’ve waiting until you came home,” Namjoon spits gulping down his drink with a sigh. “True, but I - I dunno, he seems like a nice guy anyways.”

Nodding, Namjoon settles into his seat, completely relaxed, “he kinda gives off this weirdass vibe - you know?”

“Oh, so now you read vibes?” I jokingly press, a grin crossing my features - “no you idiot. Just something about him reeks of mystery, lies.” He retorts with a huff, “its like he’s hiding something under all his charm or whatever.”

“Boring~!” I complain, placing my cup beside me and laying on the flat of my back, “no wonder why you’re failing your exams.”

“Hey!”

Rolling my shoulders back with sigh, I wave Namjoon off as his car pulls out into the road - leaving me alone in the cold night air. Shivering, I rub my arms and make my toward the unit, “was that your boyfriend?”

Jumping, I glare up at my sister, her phone clutched tightly in her hand - an ugly pimple coming exposed when she turns her head slightly.

“No you dumbass, it was Joon; we finished my project and went shopping.”

I watch as my sister raises a brow at me, “so when are you going to kiss him?”

“Ew, what the fuck!?” I screech, making a puking motion with my hand, she merely laughs. “Whatever, dad said to get your ass inside.”

With a scoff, I walk back to the unit, slamming my door shut and locking it - pulling the curtains behind. “Jungkookie~!” I call, the small bunny I’d called for instantly running over to me, my kimono dragging behind him.

“Wahh,” I coo, sitting on my knees as Jungkook engulfs my legs with his - his ears twitching and rubbing against my bare skin. I giggle and pick him, pressing a chaste kiss atop of his head.

He flinches and lowers his ears over his face somewhat, “ah is my Kookie shy?” I sing, kissing him again.

And again.

I kiss him to the point I end up laughing my brains out; so here I lay on the ground, cradling the male bunny in my arms as the final set of giggles pass my lips.

“I hope you’ll like your new home, Kook.”

It’s 5:39am here in Kathmandu, Nepal, me and few of my team we’re still dialing for some PST zone campaign like in California. The music that’s been playing on the background right now is ‘Steal my heart away by The Paper Kites’, and of course i put that indie folk music. One of my friend sitting beside to me always complains (Jokingly)that I put on music that’s completely alien to them, because i play music like from different bedroom pop artist, or indie rock or Hip-hop music. And i answer him back by saying that ‘it’s him who’s unaware of that music, not that i put different music, and it’s obviously about the music taste as well’. They always mainstream music or some Nepali music which i really don’t like haha.. Seriously, they say that I was only born in Nepal, but listen completely different music from many different countries, but hardly listens to Nepali, which agree with them. It’s not that i don’t like Nepali music, i do, but not the pop music or stupid songs.

Anyways, today was the last day of the third week of the month, now we got one more week to go along with 3 more working days, and then we’re done for the month of March. It always feels like time is running in a speed of light while working in night shift in Call center. I’m just sometime scared that I don’t want to have a regret someday like i just did nothing so progressive in my career or lets say in my life that helped to be by myself or as reborn as a new person.. idk wtf that even means..

But, seriously dude, i do enjoy working on the platform where it’s carefree zone, where the pressure i feel comes within myself, as i have my own target and want to exceed it. Since my past jobs in many different companies, i have always been rebellious, you know. I am hard working, or let’s say I’m fucking trying my best, and even with that if the CEO’s or the Manager’s gets in my nerves, pressurizing on the basis of my performances, i have a habit of firing back whatever the fuck when they tries to question me on my performance. Even though when i was at the position of Team leader or Project Manager, when i had to lead my team and come up with good results, if there were to be injustice to the employee, whether, be the raise on the salary, or firing them or this or that, i used to stood for them.. blah blah blah fuck all of these stuff. I really hate selfish, and mean companies who only think about their own profit and their own growth. All of these fucking mature people just try to take an advantage of teens. I’ve seen that, I’ve been there, i went though lotta bullshit throughout my life.

I have lots of story to tell, the only reason, I’m writing this blogs is that i wont be losing it ever, bcus on the paper on diary , it can get lost, but here, i can restore all of my memories and events. Should i just keep all of the blogs to myself, or share with some of my friends idk, i don’t want anyone to have a sympathy on me bcus they just be like “oh poor, boy, he went through this and that, how sad’ and the next couple of days or weeks, they don’t really give a fuck a bout you. It’s all good bcus i don’t give a fuck about them too.

Ok, ok i’m cursing a lot today haha, sorry for that, anyways, after 10 or 20 mins imm outta here and go watch some anime or some space news aliens stuff oou man i’m really into that. I wish how Aliens shows up on Huge mother spaceship and fucking invade our planet like it’s fucking movie. Imagine that, no more working, no more sadness, depression, love , hate whatever, we would only think about how to avoid thos mf and stay alive. Hmmm sounds so , fantastical Sci-fi right? haha yeah i know. Don’t think i just watched World War Z ok haha.

Lol, anyways i was already done dialing but i remembered i had to call back on some Mexican restro, and did all back on Cali, and got an app for Tuesday, but the reason that i’m amused is the owner that spoke with was quite charming and chil guy who had bit hard understanding in English, and was saying that he was gonna be busy or he’s not being able to follow me up in the converstation, but anyways, i did tried my best to make him understand about our campaign, hope the recording is well qualified and will go though the Dashboard, haha.

Ok i’m done for now, i’ll be leaving anytime soon, and once i reach home, i’ll be drinking some coffee, and for the breakfast maybe Sausage roll from the cafe that’ nearby. And watch some weird fucking shit on Netflix or on Youtube, or anime. We’ll see about that one.

Unpopular 5sos/5sos fam opinions

Because I have nothing better to do lol

1. Albums don’t need to be 3285338490 songs long. Like obviously having a lot of music is good in a way cause it means more sos for everybody, but I’d honestly much rather have a 10-12 song album that was perfected, where every song was their absolute best, than a nearly 20 song album where a few are tbh terrible. Like, including deluxe + target edition, sgfg literally had 19 songs total, and that’s not even including the others on the skh ep (like over and out) that came out 2 months begore sgfg. I don’t even know how many songs were on self titled since they had so many bonus track albums for different places, but it was at least 16 songs. Most other bands that I listen to have 10-12 song albums and guess what!! The albums ten to be amazing beginning to end rather than having like 5 amazing songs, some okay songs, and some very clearly not as good songs. 5sos should be valuing quality over quantity. I know they’ve said before that it’s hard to narrow songs down but guess what!! It’s hard for other bands too, but they manage!!

2. This ones more about the 5sos fam than 5sos. Listen, I miss 5sos with my entire heart literally every single day and I’m absolutely dying to hear new music as much as the next person, but for the love of god yall, waiting for new music is not as bad as yall make it sound!! Holy fuck it hasn’t even been two (2) years since sgfg yet. Idk what bands yall follow, or maybe the problem is following a band is new for some of you guys, but 2-3 years between album releases is the norm. I was even seeing people expecting new music just a year after sgfg! Yall gotta be more patient!

3. Going off of #2, it’s so hypocritical to be complaining constantly about the break. Once again, I miss them too, but you can’t be posting nonstop during their tours about how 5sos don’t get enough breaks, and then bitch about how they’re taking too long during breaks. First off, 5sos already tour way more places than a lot of bands do and in a way shorter amount of time. If you look at other bands, a lot of them don’t even do complete world tours. They might do a North American tour, take a break, then a Europe tour, break, then Asia tour (etc). Some don’t even do all of NA. I’ve seen bands do like only one side of the US and call that a “tour”. What 5sos did during slfl was crazy impressive and as much as I miss them, they 100% deserved this nearly year off touring. I know a lot of you are coming from 1D and are used to getting an album every single year (I actually didn’t know they did that my mind is blown rn?? That’s so many??) and tours constantly, but high key that’s how bands break up and resent their work. What 5sos are doing rn with their long break is 100% normal for every other band in the scene. If yall want 5sos to escape the “boy band” label so damn much, let them be like every other band and not overwork them to pieces.

4. Listen up Ashton’s singing voice is beautiful and makes angels cry. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. Having said that, there’s nothing wrong with never having Ashton sing, nor is there anything wrong with Luke being the band’s frontman. I love 4/4 with my entire heart and always will but it’d be perfectly fine for the focus to be put on Luke considering idk if yall noticed but,, it’s normal for bands to have leads lol. Also, how good they sing shouldn’t in any way shape their overall status as talented musicians. Plus, it’s mf hard to sing while drumming and the poor boy is a puddle of sweat at the end of concerts idk why yall want Ashton to sing so bad??

In conclusion please stop projecting the expectations and level of rigor that 1D were held to onto 5sos because not only are 5sos not 1D, but 1D is literally not like any band out there. Let 5sos act how normal bands act. Let them exist the way other bands do in this scene and other music scenes that 5sos are fans of.

Breaks are normal. Having short and long awaited albums is normal. Not having every single member singing is normal. And since 5sos always cite other rock/pop punk bands as their inspirations, I’d say it’s fair to hold them to the same standards of the bands that they aspire to be like, not the band that they opened for a couple years ago.

When You Assume...

Two administrators were making small talk. They discussed a neighboring business, an older man who worked across the street. “He used to be an a-hole,” said one of the two, “but he’s gotten better as he’s gotten to know us.”

The other administrator smiled. “Like this guy used to be,” pointing to an employee who was off to the side o them. “Just kidding!”

The employee, however, didn’t find the joke to be all that funny. That employee was me. I was the butt of the joke. I was the guy who, apparently, had never been an a-hole. I was the guy with the nervous smile standing confused before his superiors.

As the day went on I struggled to escape the punchline. Was there any truth to their use of that particular word? Had I made a mistake in how I presented myself as a professional? Did my superior actually mean it when they said they were only kidding? Was I wrong to feel bothered by their words?

I’ve probably shared before how I’ve always been confused as to why people feel the need to tell me who they think I am. They have taken issue with me being an introvert and “hard to read.” They have been confused about a blank look on my face instead of a smile. Guys, it is just my Resting Bradford Face. I don’t understand why they tell me these things. I never say it to them.

Once upon a time, I was in a meeting where I shared my thoughts on how our office (including myself) could improve, and the ways in which I would like to contribute. I had no real connection to the individuals asking the questions. We were not friends. And the questions they directed toward me seemed to suggest confusion as to why I would want to work with them.

I became defensive. I felt a need to prove myself. I wanted to convince them of my desire to be a team player. The lack of a professional relationship and the grumpy faces of a few made it a difficult task. And after our conversation had ended, I was made to feel like I had a made a mistake. I had come across frustrated. I had not conducted myself appropriately. And for a long time, I beat myself up over that incident.

Looking back on these moments, I notice that I assumed myself to be guilty and those who hurt me to be innocent. I took their words as gospel. I let their smears, critiques, and punchlines as truth. I mistook criticism for being constructive to my professional and personal development. I was wrong not for my own actions, but for believing someone else’s false perception of me.

We live in a world of prejudice, biases, false perceptions, and groups rushing to judgment. If you wear a “Make America Great Again” hat you’re instantly dubbed a racist. If you wear a hoodie and your skin color is dark, you’re up to no good. Democrats are right and Republicans are wrong (and vice versa). And every male Gillette consumer was raised to mistreat women.

We live in a world where we choose the heroes and villains. We have produced a culture where saying “build the wall” is somehow worse than telling someone they will grow up to be a child abuser or school shooter. We hide behind 140 characters or more on Twitter when aiming to tear someone down. Our world is not so much about having the right idea about someone, but projecting what you prefer to be right.

Examples in the Bible tell us that this is nothing new. Cain hated his brother Abel for being right (Genesis 4:3-8). Abraham and Sarah used their Egyptian maidservant to fulfill God’s promise of a son (Genesis 16:1-6). Joseph’s brothers hated him because of his dreams (Genesis 37:18-20). Samuel perceived the outward appearance of David’s brothers to be sufficient evidence for why one of them should be king (1 Samuel 16:4-7). And the disciples of Jesus believed a town’s rejection of Him to be cause for calling down fire upon its residents (Luke 9:51-56).

For all the talk about choosing love in our world, we sure do have a lot of hate. It leads me to wonder if when we talk about love what we’re really saying is to make a choice between some group’s agenda. Honestly, if we were about love we wouldn’t call for teenagers to be punched in the face, the impeachment of MF-ers, tearing a colleague down to ensure our employment and power, ignoring one’s spouse or children, taking advantage of the elderly or poor, and arresting or shooting someone because of the color of their skin.

I began this post worried there was truth to what that one-time superior had joked. I’m not saying I am innocent of making mistakes in how I have presented myself at work, no. I have walked around lost my cool and offered a cold shoulder. The thing is, while I am human, I do not desire to be that type of person. And for those moments where I have not been at my best, I apologize. But in moving forward it is my hope that we pray to show the world our best.

To do this, we have to know our strengths and weaknesses. To be at our best we have to take the time to get to know the individuals with whom we may disagree. Our goal should not be to elevate ourselves or always be right but to do what is right. To settle for anything less would be a mistake. To assume we are incapable of doing anything wrong or rushing to judging against someone would be wrong. And I think we all know what it means when you assume.

Shaggy (real name Orville Burrell) could be the most enduringly important artist to emerge from the ’90s – his reggae-fusion now a global movement and spawning yet other dancehall hybrids.

The Kingston, Jamaica deejay/MC/singer – who, having relocated to New York in his teens, served as a US Marine in the Gulf War – broke out nearly three decades ago with 1993’s dancehall cover of the Folkes Brothers’ ska staple ‘Oh Carolina’. Two years on, he crossed over internationally with Boombastic, which, aside from entailing that popular title-track, won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album. However, Shaggy became a superstar in 2000 following his fifth album, Hot Shot, home to the hits ‘It Wasn’t Me’, ‘Angel’ and ‘Luv Me, Luv Me’ (originally cut as a duet with Janet Jackson for the How Stella Got Her Groove Back soundtrack). He’ll commemorate the LP’s 20th anniversary.

Shaggy has defied reductive mainstream media perceptions of him as a fluke or novelty act. Indeed, he’s released some of his most credible music in the 2010s. Shaggy connected with dub legends Sly & Robbie for 2013’s Out Of Many, One Music, describing it as “a pure, all-reggae album”. In 2018, he and the former Police frontman Sting aired the Caribbean-inspired 44/876 – which entered the UK Top 10 and landed him another Grammy (last month Shaggy appeared at his friend’s Rainforest Fund 30th Anniversary Concert, We’ll Be Together, in NY). In 2019, Shaggy presented Wah Gwaan?! (“what’s goin’ on?”). This time, he delved into personal topics, ruminating on a difficult relationship with his mother (and parenting) on ‘Wrong Room’.

Shaggy continues to vibe with contemporary urban, dance and pop figures, from Major Lazer to Kylie Minogue. Recently, Shaggy inadvertently caused online drama in revealing that he declined an opportunity to contribute to Rihanna’s upcoming dancehall album, reported to have had input from a who’s who of the scene. Characteristically gracious and open, Shaggy told the UK tabloid Daily Star that the Barbadian phenom’s team “approached” him to submit ideas – but he works differently. “There’s a lot of great people involved but for me I didn’t need to audition to be on the record, I’ll leave that to younger guys.” Poor Shaggy raised the ire of Rihanna’s Navy and was even a talk show topic. (The details were later disputed by an anonymous representative.)

Curiously, speaking to Music Feeds in the same timeframe, Shaggy cites schedules as the issue – while expressing his own enthusiasm for what should be a classic RiRi album. He also talks of being an early Cardi B champion and bonding with his oldest offspring, Richard Burrell, better known as the Florida cloud rapper Robb Bank$.

Shaggy has a formidable reputation as a live performer, impressing the late James Brown himself. In fact, he went viral when booked for 2017’s Glastonbury. Last in Australia five years back, Shaggy is finally returning for a co-headlining tour with Sean Paul of ‘Get Busy’ fame, hitting the Gold Coast’s sold-out One Love Festival and national side-shows – band in tow.

Music Feeds: You have a great relationship with Australia because you’ve recorded with Merril Bainbridge and Kylie Minogue.

Shaggy: Well, if we wanna go a little further, we got Faydee also, with [‘Habibi] (I Need Your Love)’, who’s also Australian. So, you know what, I’ve had a great relationship – you’re absolutely right. It’s one of the places that I’ve always had a really good reception every time we’ve gone. I remember doing the Rumba festivals. I remember doing a couple of these [Raggamuffin] festivals over the years. And I remember actually coming and doing my own solo tours in Australia. It’s always been great; always been good. I wish we’d come back a little bit more often, but I think it’s just how far it is that makes it really difficult and expensive at times. But it’s cool to be coming back in a setting like this; where it’s cool with me and Sean [Paul] and the gang.

MF: Of course, Sean blew up after you. What kind of relationship have you cultivated over the years – because I’m sure your paths are always crossing?

S: I mean, hey, we cool. We both live in Jamaica and we don’t live very far from each other. We have a very cordial relationship, him and I. I’m not gonna say that we hang out and make music together, but there’s times that he might call me… I called him on the birth of his son and had a conversation. He might call me… I remember I did an interview on [the US morning radio show] The Breakfast Club and it got really personal about a bunch of stuff and he kinda called me on that. It was like, “Yo, dude, I watched that – it was mad deep” and stuff like that.

Yeah, we do correspond and stuff like that. We’ve just never gotten to this whole thing where we’re gonna work together – ’cause he was like my rival and I was like his rival to a lot of people, so there’s always a bit of a friendly competition there. But just him and me together, we’ve always been good. And, yes, coming on this tour is gonna be really, really cool – it’s all linking up. There’s people in his band that are friends of mine and people in my band that are friends of his. Jamaica’s really small, man (laughs). So we’re all cool!

MF: You had an album, Wah Gwaan?!, in 2019. What can you tell us about it?

S: You know what? It’s an album I was supposed to put out a year before. I was all set and ready to go and then Sting and I just bunched in and we ended up doing this whole 44/876 album and kind of shelving that [other] album for a minute. And, once we were finished touring for 44/876, and it came around, the label was pressing me here, “You’ve gotta put this album out.” I went back in and redid it, and I did probably around 80 per cent of it over – and I did it in a relatively quick time. I would say I wrote all the lyrics in about six days and then ended up just doing a bunch of new songs.

When I was done with it, I was pretty pleased. I showed it to the A&R at 300 [Entertainment]. He came in and listened to it and he came to me and says, “I love this – it’s even better than what you had before.” I was like, “Wow, OK.” I didn’t expect that he would go with it because I did it so quickly. He thought it was great and we just went ahead.

But it was my last album on [300], so I knew it was gonna be a tough one. It’s hard to get record companies to give that 110 per cent on records when they don’t have an option. So it’s just part of their whole thing.

MF: Why did you re-record it? Were you just sick of the material – or were you in a different headspace?

S: No, I was just in a different place. It was a year where I was just in a whole different place.

MF: The album with Sting actually had a huge push down here, but it did really surprise people. What did you make of the response? Did you get a kick out of the fact that people didn’t expect that project?

S: Yeah, that’s kinda why we did it! We did it because Sting and I have one thing in common: we’re both allergic to boredom. We wanted to do something that was a bit unique and really would not look right on paper, but we knew it worked really well together. We knew that before everybody else, so we literary were just in everybody’s face until they got to know what we knew.

MF: You recognised Cardi B’s talent when she was just coming up and put her on a remix of ‘Boom Boom!!!’; Popcaan as well. What did you see in her at that time? Do you stay in touch?

S: Yeah, nah, nah. I saw her at the Grammys recently and we stopped and chatted for a bit. I’m cool with her. But, when she came to me, she was brought to me by a friend of mine; he brought her in. She had not had ‘Bodak Yellow’ or anything like that. But she was on [the reality show] Love & Hip Hop [New York] at the time and just had crazy bars, just the way she spit was dope, her personality was wild – you know, you meet her and she just fills the room up. And those are the things that I look for. I was like, “Yo, I wanna do a record with her” and actually did the record with her and Popcaan. I put Popcaan on it and it was a big vibe. But then the thing kinda went south in a way because Popcaan didn’t like some of the content that she’d said – and it just got really bad. So I just put the record out there and then hell hit. It was crazy. I mean, I wanted to go as far as doing a video and all that, but it got a little toxic afterwards – on no part of hers; it was just Popcaan had some issues.

MF: Rihanna’s working on a reggae album – a pure reggae album. There’s a remix of her ‘Umbrella’ with you online – I’m not sure if it’s official! But I wondered if you would ever work with her on that; if you’ve ever even had exchanges about a full collaboration?

S: I know a couple of people that have collaborated on this new dancehall album she’s doing. I was asked to collaborate on it; I haven’t gotten around to it. I know her A&R very well. But there’s a lot of things that I’m doing at the same time. When the situation presents itself the right way, then I probably will do it. But I know a lot of people who are collaborating on that album and they’re stellar people; people who I know are really great songwriters and great musicians in the dancehall field and I think they’re gonna do it incredibly well.

MF: That’s intriguing. There are so many rumours about this album floating around – I can’t wait ’til I hear it. But it’d be great if you worked together.

S: It’s gonna be good; it’s really great… Demarco [who remixed Rihanna’s ‘Rude Boy’] is one of those artists that’s on it. He’s one of the top dancehall producers and a songwriter and he has a couple of songs on there. There are a couple of people who I know that are really, really strong people that are on there.

MF: Your son Robb Bank$ is doing hip-hop – cloud rap, experimental hip-hop. Are you a fan of the music he does? Have you given him advice – if he even takes advice?

S: Yeah, I spoke to him last night, funny enough. The thing about him – he’s passionate about the music itself. Recently he spoke to me about doing some dancehall and collaborating with some dancehall artists here and there. He works out of my studio in NY as well as in Miami. It’s where his passion lies, man.

I introduced him to hip-hop music – the Biggie album [The Notorious BIG’s Ready To Die] was an album that he loved, it was one of his favourites. I used to play it a lot. He knew everything about hip-hop music; not just doing the music but knew about the culture of it and knew about the history of it. That’s what I really love about him.

It’s all urban music at the end of the day. He’s really strong with his Jamaican roots. He’s been coming to Jamaica every year since he was born…. So he’s very much intertwined with the culture, but he’s just doing hip-hop. He likes hip-hop, he likes the vibe of it and the energy – and I love it, too. I listen to a lot of stuff he does.

Here’s an interview we did with Grady Philip Drugg back in April.

Keeping up with Grady Philip Drugg

Today I’m talking with Grady Philip Drugg about his upcoming release “Art Is Supposed To Be Fun!”. I met Grady for the first time a few months ago. He’d been living in Austin for over half a year and we’d finally found the time to link up. He’s been a great friend since and I’m super hyped to be able to talk with him about this new release.

MF: Hey Grady, thanks for talking with us today!

GD: No problem boyo, glad to do it.

MF: Tell us about your upcoming album release.

GD: Okay. What do you wanna know about it?

MF: When is it coming out? Where can we find it?

GD: It’ll be out April 21st via Deep Sea Records. You can actually already pre-order it through their site. (http://deepsearecords.limitedrun.com/) Otherwise, you can get one from me at a show. I’ll be on tour in mid July and I’ll have em with me.

MF: That’s exciting, where are you going on your tour?

GD: Lawrence, KS

Austin, TX

MF: So, how might this album differ from some of the others that we’ve heard from you?

GD: It’s all over the place. Everyone who has heard it agrees that it’s way different from my last release. First off, half was recorded on my 4 track and half was recorded in my friend’s studio. I think the songs are better on this one, definitely… The last album was a bunch of pop filler stuff that I did for fun, which is cool, but as far as actual songwriting goes, it wasn’t the best.

This new one, I encourage everyone to have a sit-down listen because I definitely intended for it to be one cohesive thing. I wanted the formats of recording to emphasize the emotional feel of each song, so we tried to transition each one so that the analog tracks and digital tracks didn’t sound too weird… I really like it. I’m proud of this record.

MF: That’s really exciting! I’m hyped to hear it.

GD: Thanks man, I’m excited for it to finally be out haha.

MF: Are we going to be hearing any of the new songs at the Planned Parenthood benefit show?

GD: Definitely, yes.

MF: Can you tell us about your current guitar rig?

GD: As far as guitars, I’m really into oddball vintage stuff. My main guitar right now is a 1967 Alamo Fury, which is sort of like a Danelectro type deal. It was made to be a student guitar… Also, it was made in San Antonio back it the day, so that’s cool. My other one is a 1976 SD Curlee, which is more like a poor man’s Travis Bean. It screams Jerry Garcia to me.

For my amp, I just got a 65 Princeton reissue which is really cool, I’ve always wanted one. Love that low wattage breakup. My bass player has a Vox AC30 that he uses in his studio and sometimes I’ll run that in stereo with my Princeton.

Unfortunately the Alamo guitar will not be making an appearance at any shows in the near future because I cut the shit out of my finger a few days ago and the SD Curlee is just much easier to play because it’s like a shredder guitar and it has super low action.

MF: I can’t wait to hear it all in action. So you moved to Austin about 7 months ago right?

GD: Shit, actually I think in two weeks it’ll be a year!

MF: Holy heck, time is fucked up.

GD: Dude I know hahahah.

MF: Anyway, how was your move from Springfield? How’ve you been liking Austin?

GD: Definitely digging Austin, TX over Springfield, MO. Not that I don’t have mad love for Springfield. But while Springfield is definitely home for a lot of my closest friends, it’s mostly inhabited by shitty republican meth people. At least that’s the impression I got, but I worked jobs that kind of gravitated towards that demographic, I guess.

By the way, Springfield really was the meth capital of the world for a time, so I’m not just hatin’.

MF: I know what you mean, that can be really hard to escape. I’m glad you like it here. Let’s talk about that OG steak n’ shake in downtown springfield!

GD: Yes, let’s.

MF: Oh and the mix!

GD: Haha I never really frequented the Mix. I know our dude Alex Harris is a fan.

MF: I’ve been to Springfield once in my life. It was my first time meeting Alex or being there. We went to The Mix for karaoke and $1 Budweiser on tap. It was a wild night.

GD: Hahaha yeah, that sounds like an Alex night. Alex is a fun guy to party with. I never really frequented a whole lot of bars, really, but we used to have some fun together, definitely.

MF: While we’re on the subject, didn’t you and Alex used to play in a band together?

GD: Yeah, we totally did! For those who don’t know, Alex and I played together in Grammer. Actually, when Grammer split, Alex and our singer Maxx went on to form a new band called Turf, and our guitarist Dakota and I went on to form Importer/Exporter. Alex and I also had a little project for a second called Ghost Bike, so go check that out. We’ve been meaning to record new music forever but we’ve just never gotten around to it.

And by the way, I don’t know when Turf’s new record is coming out, but it’s fantastic. They recorded it with Jonathan from Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and he always does an incredible job.

MF: How would you say the Austin scene differs from that of Springfield’s?

GD: Austin’s scene seems more like a bunch of different scenes, whereas Springfield’s was definitely more unified. That being said, there were a lot of petty little cliques and people who didn’t like each other, so I won’t say it’s better by any means.

I feel like in Austin, everyone is kind of just doing their own thing, so you’re free to do yours. I dig it.

MF: Tell us about your PBR tattoo

GD: Haha I don’t really drink a whole lot anymore so I have kind of a strained nostalgia about it. I have a tattoo of a grim reaper with sunglasses smoking a cigarette that says “pbr youth” but that’s kind of a joke about the Grammer boys and our extended family. We jokingly referred to ourselves as the PBR youth crew.

MF: I love it.

GD: Haha thanks man

MF: You mentioned that this album is more of a “sit down” type album – Can you tell us a little about your writing process and the inspiration behind some of these songs?

GD: I think this one is going back to the kind of songwriting I was about before I put out my self titled. If you listen to my first EP Great Lands, or even my very first demo, all the songs are almost entirely lyric based. Like I said, the self titled just happened as a fun project. As far as the subject matter, I think I talk a lot about facing fears, leaving home, love, goofy stuff like that. But the biggest thing I think comes from this song, Pretending is Stupid. There’s one line where I say, “Why should I pretend to like what I don’t like? Just to be a cool guy and pick fights?” That comes from people in the music scene ousting others because they don’t like the right bands or wear the right clothes. I think that shit is wack. Art is for everybody. And even if your intention is to make something grotesque and disorienting, it should feel good to make. You shouldn’t feel like you have to make a certain kind of thing because other people don’t think it’s cool. Art is supposed to be fun.

MF: I couldn’t agree more. So with the exception of your tour, what’s next for you? (As a musician or as a person)

GD: At the moment, I’m just focusing on finishing up this semester of college. Then in June I’m actually going into a big studio to record a few new songs for an EP or a single or something. I don’t know when that’s gonna come out, but I’m excited. I think I’m gonna use my band on the session and we’re gonna record the bulk of it live, which will be nice, because I usually play everything myself.

MF: I’m glad we could talk. Thanks so much for your time Grady!
