A legit way to fight the climate crisis from where you're sitting right now
As promised, in honor of Earth Day, I've written some suggestions for how you can write a letter to the editor for your local paper, and reach some people who otherwise might get a more...shall we say restricted view of climate news. Letters to the Editor remain a surprisingly important political vehicle. People see letters to the editor and they feel like they're hearing from their neighbors- real people with authentic, down-to-earth agendas. They're the second most read part of the paper, after the front page. Take that stage!
Step 1- Pick an article in your local paper to respond to. Today is Earth day, and lots of papers will have at least something about climate crisis or environmental protection on it's pages. Local papers are better, because, as you can imagine, papers like The New Yorker get a lot more submissions to compete against, and anyways they don't have the same sense of local opinion.
Don't fret if your local paper leans conservative! That means it has readers we REALLY need to reach! And they may be more open to reading about these issues in a paper than online, which particularly a lot of older, don't feel like "the real world".
Step 2- Figure out what you're going to say! Maybe there's a glaring error in the article you want to address. BUT, if you're not sure, you can look up your local organization that's fighting for these goals. For example, I could look up and find MN350, because I'm in Minnesota. Going to their social media and their webpage/newsletter archive gives me an inside look at what people who are really immersed in these subjects have to say about what's going on.
So, for example, I see that my local group applauds Minneapolis's efforts at going to all clean energy, and has a timeline, but that people on the inside are saying that without a dedicated funding stream, people implementing these changes will have to either hope federal funding stays stable or fight for funding in the city council every year. Ok, now when there's an article about Minneapolis's plans, I have something to say.
Step 3- Draft it up.
The goal here is to be short and to the point.
Opening line: Identify which article you're responding to, and maybe your feeling about it.
First paragraph: What is the specific issue? What is a relevant fact and why does it  warrant public concern?
Second paragraph: What would you say that we do in response, or what would you ask your neighbors to do?  Why?
Third paragraph: What is currently being done to address the issue and how could people who have been persuaded act?
This should be no more than 150 to 250 words TOTAL.
While you're wording it, some things to keep in mind- stats and facts are good, but don't use a lot of acronyms or jargon. Expect your readers to be coming at this with about an 8th grade education.
If you have a sense of what the people you're talking to find persuasive, lean into that. For example, for my letter to the editor, I emphasized that chaotic funding leads to lack of ability to plan ahead or bulk-buy. I know the people I'm talking to like things to be common-sense and detest governmental waste, so that's an easy one.
If you want extra help, I have a list of best practices for communicating about the climate crisis right here.
Step 4- Proofread, then submit it via whatever process your local paper has. The goal, if you can manage is, is to submit something within 48 hours of the original article's publication. That's the sweet spot for most papers.
BONUS ROUND!
You did that, and still have a little energy for the environment left? There's one more thing you can do to super-charge your effort!
Guess what, you can stack the deck in favor of your specific letter being published.
But it will involve using a phone.
That's right, if you REALLY wanna turbo boost this thing, you're gonna call the paper (or have your non-phone-adverse-friend or family member pretend to be you and call the paper).
Call as soon as possible after the editor would have received the material.
Use pleasant persistence to speak with the right person. Don’t stop at a receptionist or secretary. Create enough POLITE urgency about your letter that you get through to the specific reporter or editor who will decide whether or not to print your piece.
Provide the editor with specific local info and urgency. Focus your conversation on why this issue is relevant to their readers.
Get specific feedback and/or a specific commitment from the reporter. If they don’t want to print the letter, find out why and what adjustments you can make to get it printed.
If they agree to print it, find out when you can expect to see it in the paper. The you can tell other people. Even if memaw isn't a big climate activist, she might show your letter to everybody she knows if she knows you wrote it.
And that's the process! I know that's a lot of information to throw at you, but ultimately, it can be pretty quick to crank these things out. And, again, these have been proven to be powerful persuaders. We need as many people as we can to be in this fight, so go and get them!
And always remember, you're not just combating ignorance, you're combating hopelessness, helplessness, and burnout! You can inspire people to think about what's possible.
PS if any of you actually do this, please let me know. It'd make me so happy.

Heya! Guess who's officially done with Yoru? That's right, this gal!
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go binge watch Iso's trailer again as a rewar– I mean, to get a feel for his personality, if you catch my drift hehe
Catch you next week! And this time I won't be late!!
❤ฺ·。
Yoru x F! Reader
Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 / Part 4.5 / Part 5 / Part 6
Genre: Fluff, some angst
TW: Detailed violence
Words: 6k
Synopsis: Hapless doesn't even begin to describe you. With your life flipped upside down within the span of a day; you're left to rely on your best friend Tala to help you pick up the pieces and build the new one forced upon you. And this 'luck' seems to have caught the attention of one of her friends.
。+❤ฺ·。❤ฺ·。+❤ฺ· +❤·。❤ฺ·。+❤ฺ·
To say today had a good start would be a vast understatement.
You woke up feeling untouchable, as if even a bullet wouldn’t be able to take away the triumphant aura you exuded around everyone on your way to responsibly prepare for the mission.
You were smiling ear to ear in the training range; gunning down bots like a particularly happy paperboy delivering the newspapers. Neon definitely felt that something was off. But it wasn’t the fact that you weren’t an anxiety-ridden mess, no. What concerned her was how good your aim was, and especially how calm you were with how you wielded your weapon. It was contagious.
She stood next to you and crossed her arms, speaking loudly to counteract how deafening the shots were.
‎
“Someone’s happy today.”
‎
You shrugged and continued shooting.
‎
“It’s just a good day, you know? Clear weather, chill vibes and everything.”
‎
Neon raised an eyebrow. With the upcoming mission, she herself was prepared to reassure you on how things would go as smoothly as they did last time. But this? This attitude was as natural as catching sight of a flying pig.
‎
“Alright, lay it all out, A/N. You were gone all day yesterday.”
‎
She forced a blush out of you with just those words, and prompted you to stop shooting for a moment. There was no reason for you not to tell her. Well, except for one…
‎
“It’s not like you’d believe me.”
‎
“Don’t be like that, when have I ever doubted you?”
‎
She said with one hand on your shoulder, completely confident in her words. And you could make an entire list in response to that. A sigh escaped you before you finally managed to meet her gaze.
‎
“Fine. I may or may not have gone out with Yoru yesterday.”
‎
Neon paused for a moment. Then, she snickered, as if you told her you’d won the lottery.
‎
“Be honest. I’ll be impressed with whatever it really is.”
‎
“I’m not joking, Neon!”
‎
“No way, Yoru doesn’t go out with people two consecutive days in a row, I tried!”
‎
Sounds like something she’d do, alright. Just as you went to throw a snarky response at her, you jumped once she gasped in the most diva way possible and forcefully tilted your Bulldog upwards.
There, she saw it.
‎
“What is this?”
‎
Neon called out as if she spotted a bomb. In fact, she scared you, until you realised she was pointing at your prized gift from the day before. She tilted the gun to get a better angle and held the omamori in her hand to make sure it was what she thought it was.
‎
“There’s no way– is that from Yoru?!”
‎
You flushed and pulled it away, swiftly turning on the safety considering how stupid of a move this was.
‎
“I told you, dummy!”
‎
“I didn’t think– did he give that to you or did you sneak into a shrine? There’s no way you got that, right?”
‎
You allowed her to take your gun to inspect it. And with just a few touches, she confirmed that it was an omamori only he’d get.
‎
“I’m serious, he gave it to me!”
‎
“How?! I've known him for months and I can barely get a text back sometimes!”
‎
Which is why you couldn’t wait until the mission to finally not have something go wrong for once. Nevertheless, you innocently shrugged and tucked a lock of your hair behind your ear in the most smug manner possible.
‎
“Oh, well, you know. I guess some of us are naturally irresistible.”
‎
“What-ever.”
‎
Neon crossed her arms and pouted for a moment. But then, she met your gaze with a devious glimmer in her eyes once a brand new idea popped up. Uh oh.
‎
“Sooo… did he cook you something this morning? Anything delicious for breakfast?”
‎
“I woke up late.”
‎
She clicked her tongue, before getting back to the main task at hand.
‎
“Okay fine. When he does, which he will, you wouldn’t mind, you know… sneaking some for your best friend, right?”
‎
You couldn’t hold back the giggle that escaped you. Of course Neon would request something preposterous like this. Why wouldn’t she?
‎
“Ease up, Neon. Too early. We’re still just friends, remember?”
‎
“We’re almost a month in and you still don’t know how Yoru’s world works? If he feeds you, he’s basically proposing!”
‎
You definitely knew, but you weren’t about to admit that. She began shooting with your Bulldog as each of you spoke, almost as if to emphasise the fact you had an omamori tied to the gun.
‎
“That’s a reach.”
‎
“Why’s that? It’s not like you’d say no if he does.”
‎
“Pshh. As if you know that.”
‎
Neon tossed your Bulldog back to you, before grabbing your wrist and forcing you to get a good look at the roots. Only now did you notice how organised and easy-to-digest they were, as if they were sets upon sets of cables that unwrapped from each other. No wonder why it felt like your arm was easier to have.
‎
“This wasn’t here before!”
‎
Your eyes widened as you took the sight in. And for once, it looked organised.
‎
“Wait– when the hell did this happen?”
‎
“You didn’t notice this?!”
‎
You flushed and pulled away as Neon laughed. But since you were a simple tee, you couldn’t really cover up your arm.
Before she could somehow sneak in one more snarky remark about how unfocused you were, the door to the training range loudly slid open and caught both of your attention. Your eyes promptly darted to the entrance. The strong light from behind shone upon a silhouette that took you a moment to recognise.
But if the imposingly tall stature didn’t help with that, his voice surely did.
‎
“Excusez-moi, not to interrupt a pleasant conversation, but we have to leave.” <Excuse me,>
‎
Chamber called out, earning a sneer from Neon. One that you unfortunately didn’t see.
‎
“Leave? Wait, what time is it?”
‎
“One.”
‎
Your eyes widened.
‎
“Crap. Okay, talk later Neon! Don’t forget to wait for me until I’m back!”
‎
You quickly reloaded your Bulldog and rushed towards him. Neon excitedly waved as you moved through the doorway with the same grin on her face.
‎
“I’ll be waiting, break a leg out there!”
‎
She said, earning a nod before you disappeared down the hallways. With Yoru’s omamori in hand, you thought, you hoped it wouldn’t be your leg that would break.
You moved down the halls with Chamber by your side, inspecting your weapon one final time.
‎
“Man, time flew by so fast. It feels like I haven’t even trained. Also, am I late?”
‎
Chamber chuckled, his polite laughter echoing through the hall just as much as the clicks of his dress shoes did. You couldn't tell whether or not he was mad. But from the looks of things, he seemed... unamused.
‎
“Late enough for Brimstone to send me to get you. Was your phone off, by any chance?”
‎
Uh oh.Your face turned red. And immediately, you began fiddling with your bracelet. Crap, he mentioned your phone; did they send you a bunch of messages that you didn't see?!
‎
“Oh, sorry. I– I left my phone back in my room…” You awkwardly smiled, feeling a bit more embarrassed. “I’m making a terrible first impression on you, huh? Sorry about that…”
‎
“No need for an apology, A/N. I completely understand. It must be exciting, non? Your first mission with a team.”
‎
Chamber noted with a smile as he fixed his tie.
‎
“Ah, to be young, innocent, and on my first mission again.”
‎
You couldn't help but smile. His voice was calm. Just the stagnant tone of it could put you to sleep if he just spoke long enough. With everything else, there's no way he wasn’t one of the higher-ups, right?
‎
“So you’re Chamber, right? I heard you’re an expert. Does that mean they’ll bring you on the other side?”
‎
He shrugged and put both hands behind his back as he walked.
‎
“That is a contingency I cannot predict. Personally, I would hope otherwise.”
‎
“Why not? Fighting yourself sounds like fun. Speaking of, now I’m curious about how you are on the field.”
‎
“I admire your optimism. That being said, if I were you, A/N, I would stay far, far away from my double.”
‎
You paused to process what he said.
What did he mean by that? But just as you formed an answer to that question, Chamber stopped in his tracks, and only now did you notice that you had finally arrived at your destination. You stopped as well once you made your way through the doorway. It felt like the voices of your colleagues were drowned out during the conversation, for some reason.
‎
“Ah, here we are. Now, as I was saying, keep that attitude up, and I guarantee nothing less than an excellent performance from you.”
‎
He said with the same smile he had the entire conversation.
‎
“Best of luck to you.”
And with that, Chamber took his leave and left you with your thoughts like nothing happened.
‎
“Thanks…”
You mumbled, before quickly looking around in order to distract yourself from what he just said. Luckily for you, however, you spotted Omen in the far right corner of the area, both his arms crossed as he listened to Sage ramble on about something.
Quickly, you made your way towards them.
❤ฺ·。
The place you've arrived at looked vastly different from the pictures you'd seen beforehand. But, to be fair, you looked at it for a picosecond before leaving for more, ahem, 'important' matters. Once the aircraft landed, you stepped out with the rest and prepared yourself for the sand that might enter your eyes, recalling which site you were supposed to be in.
But before any of you could actually move to where you needed to be, you immediately found Brimstone standing in front of all of you.
‎
"Alright, let's get one thing out of the way. How many of you read the brief?"
‎
You proudly lifted your hand.
‎
"I did!"
‎
"Me too."
‎
Yoru chimed in, and the both of you earned a nod before he turned to look at Omen and...
‎
"Phoenix, buddy, you're coming with me."
‎
The Englishman’s eyes widened.
‎
"Woah woah, why me? Why would you assume I haven't read it?"
‎
"Have you?"
‎
Brim asked with a raise of his brow, and Phoenix quickly let out an awkward chuckle whilst he scratched his head. Omen, unlike the two of you, minded his own business and proceeded to walk to his designated site.
‎
"Well, I didn't read read it, but I skimmed over it. Still counts, right?"
‎
Brim walked off to A site right behind Omen, and Phoenix promptly followed behind.
‎
"That's still more progress than last time! Wait, Brim, just hear me out, fam! How come Raze never gets in trouble for it?"
‎
You giggled to yourself before moving to your site: B.
While you walked, you extended your arm and took in the sight all over again. Seeing the roots so organised felt like such a breath of fresh air. Not only that, but being able to feel it without it mimicking the sensation of being trapped in a deep maze of a forest.
A shade of deep blue caught your eye, and you lifted your chin to see Yoru standing next to the doorway with his Sheriff in hand. You hadn't noticed him walking off during the feud between Brim and Phoenix.
‎
"Testing out a new look?"
‎
You playfully rolled your eyes.
‎
"Mind you, this is your fault."
‎
"Tch. Then no wonder it looks good."
‎
There he was, the confident Yoru you knew and probably loved.
‎
"You're too confident for someone who got all red over a hug."
‎
Yoru chuckled. Just as you took another step forward, he spoke up once more.
‎
"You okay?"
‎
"Uh, yeah, of course I am. Why?"
‎
"Just asking..."
‎
This time, his tone was much more... you couldn't really put your finger on it. Despondent? You noticed his awkward stance. His shoulders were tense, and his eyes had this odd glimmer in them.
...
Oh.
‎
"Are you talking about the last mission?"
‎
"I didn't say anything."
‎
"I'm serious, Yoru. If I can't be ready now, then I'll never be."
‎
He shrugged and walked through the doorway to which you promptly followed from behind.
‎
"I know."
‎
His path was curt once he felt a tug at his sleeve, and he looked behind to see you gently holding his wrist.
‎ ‎
"Hey, dinner after?"
‎
Yoru stared at you for a few seconds and fought the blush that crept up on him. Then, he shook his head.
‎
"Save it for next week. I need to rejuvenate."
‎
"Rejuvenate?"
‎
"Introvert thing."
‎
A set of familiar beeping echoed from window. And it wasn't only a few seconds later until an explosion took its place, grabbing both of your attention. Definitely Raze. Even you knew that.
‎
"That's our queue. See you around."
‎
Before another word could be exchanged, Yoru tore the fabric open and disappeared into the ocean of blue he called a dimension. But you couldn't help but let your thoughts roam as you moved near the radianite crates stacked on top of each other.
Having been around Yoru enough to make him come out of his shell, you knew when he was uncomfortable or not. And he sounded like he held something back. Did you do something wrong? Was it the date earlier? Did you push things too far?!
You mumbled an 'ow' once you picked at your bracelet too hard, a ting of pain following the scratch. In order to distract yourself, the radio was muted and you hesitantly called out your situation.
‎
'Uh‎– Raze on B.'
‎
Enough anxiety, you had a mission to get to. Evident by the rapid footsteps that came from long. You immediately took position and held out your arm, lightly twisting each root until you found the right one to slow down their push. Since they were now untangled and you were calm, it was exceptionally easy to navigate the maze that used to be your arm. Not the scent, not the hand… You paused once you felt a peculiar one.
The bomb.
Just as you heard the footsteps switch from a sandy ground to a wooden one, a burst of sundew escaped your arm and immediately landed where they would have stepped if they didn't push themselves back.
The roots stuck themselves on the ground and prevented them from entering.
Perfect.
You held up your gun and diligently watched the angle in case they'd start to get bold.
'Any updates?'
‎
Brimstone asked over the radio. You were so focused that you'd completely tuned everything out, so you jumped once he spoke. Yoru unmuted.
‎
'They're not committing. Probably a distraction.'
‎
You were surprised at this. Despite the ruckus, he seemed confident in this assumption.
‎
'Good call. Then we're staying here. Think you can hold your own out there, kid?'
‎
'Yeah. We just need smokes.'
‎
The blast echoed on Yoru's side made you wince. Luckily for you, he muted and spared you the inevitable ringing in your ears.
And it only took a few seconds before a purple mist emerged right where you were aiming, shielding you from the bullets that would promptly be fired. Combined with Yoru's call, you could now tell they were shooting at random.
‎
Some time had passed since that ‘attack’.
Despite what you thought was a hard push earlier, Yoru was ultimately right in the end and they'd aggressively pushed out on A, forcing Yoru to rotate. You, however, decided to go from behind. The distant gunfire took over your ears and unintentionally helped shield your footsteps as you moved. Then, it stopped and a heavy thud followed.
‎
"Yo, I got the spike!"
‎
Phoenix proudly called out over the radio. But before you could hear who responded to him, you immediately tuned it all out and focused in on the steps right around the corner. You were in bath, and there was clearly someone who wasn't paying attention to you. In the words of Neon, 'easy pick'. Or whatever she used to say.
Then, the sound of the teleporter went off and concealed you even further. Just as he took his final shot and stepped back to reload, you held out your arm and began twisting a specific set of roots to emit a strong scent. You knew you'd started to do something right once  he began to cough into his elbow. And with a deep breath, you mentally prepared yourself to get your first kill.
You peeked and began shooting, refusing to let your finger off the trigger until the Bulldog ran out of bullets. And... you did it.
Gekko's dead.
‎
A huff escaped you once you took a step back, reloading with incredibly shaky hands. Your eyes were stuck on the omamori as you worked. You got your first kill.
The teleporter going off twice snapped you out of your trance, before the voice of Yoru took over your ear on the radio.
‎
"Who's in bath?"
‎
"It was me, I got the pick on Gekko."
‎
You said with a shaky yet excited voice. Now you started to understand why Neon spoke like that sometimes.
‎
"Finally got a kill? Nice one."
‎
You couldn't help but smile at this.
‎
"Chamber's stuck in hall with the spike. It's only us here. If we can draw him out, one of us can get an easy kill."
‎
You peeked to see the spike sitting right in front of the teleporter. And if you looked closely, you could see a golden glint reflected off of him. Probably the tattoos on his head. Yoru was backsite. With all of this in mind, a plan immediately popped up.
‎
"Stay there, I'll lure him out."
‎
"Got it."
‎
You stood near the doorway and already knew which root to aim for before you even lifted your arm. A shadow slowly emerged from above and blocked the glimmer.
Then, the air stopped.
‎
Just as the building he was in buckled under its own weight, Chamber peeked, shot then disappeared into the teleporter with the spike. It took you a moment to look down on your hand and realise that there was a hole on your palm, blood slowly pooling around the wound and escaping.
‎
❤ฺ·。
‎
Everything felt like a blur at that point. Noises were drowned out, your mind drew blanks and your eyes were focused on only your hand.
Warmth slowly began to encircle your right shoulder. And like a virus, it began spreading in a line across the inside of your arm, red fluid continuously seeping out of the 'small' wound on your palm. It took what felt like a few minutes to comprehend the fact that he hit his shot almost perfectly. So perfectly, it went through your arm and tore your roots apart.
Then, you realised that the odd deafening noise around you had been reduced to a mere rumble. But once you looked up, the explanation was immediately provided. The exit was blocked by what seemed to be the building you ripped apart before he took his shot.
You couldn't move your right arm whatsoever.
‎
You felt a pull on your chin. And before you knew it, you were looking right at a familiar set of brown eyes.
‎
"Hey, hey, look at me, are you okay?"
‎
How did he get here... so fast?
‎
"Y‎– yeah, I'm good, I..."
‎
The centre of your right shoulder felt so heavy now, as if the bullet inside now began increasing in weight. You still haven't been able to comprehend the fact you were shot. Yoru, however, wasn't in a state of shock like you were.
‎
"We need to get you to Sage."
‎
"We have to run to B."
‎
You both said at the same time, and you earned a dirty look from him.
‎
"Yoru, It's fine. It doesn't hurt."
‎
"You're bleeding."
‎
"It's not important! Look, let's take care of the spike first, then we can get to my arm. The teleporter's just outside!"
‎
"We're not going‎–"
‎
"I'll be good, it's not like it hurts, anyway!"
‎‎
Before he could get another word in, you immediately moved through the entrance from behind and walked as fast as you could towards the teleporter. Yoru followed from behind despite his ability to disappear into the rift. You weren't lying when you said it didn't hurt. But that, unfortunately, was before the adrenaline had worn off. And you hadn't realised such a fact.
‎
‎
Now that a moment had passed, with each step you took, it felt like you were exerting more and more energy just to get to your destination. You stopped just a few feet next to the would-be teleporter to catch your breath. What you hadn't noticed was that it was blocked by so much rubble, it was impossible to get through even if you wanted to.
You lifted a hand towards the wreckage and began sifting through the remains of roots you had to clear an entrance. But no matter how much you tried, you couldn't locate any points for what you needed. It was as if the roots Chamber sliced stripped you away of your powers completely.
Yoru held your chin and noticed the tinge of blue that painted your lips. That wasn't to mention how deathly pale you were, even more than you naturally were.
‎
"You're losing too much blood."
‎
You weakly shoved his hand away.
‎
"Don't do that..."
‎
Yoru rolled his eyes. And since you forgot who you were dealing with, you were to pay the price. He slipped a hand under your legs and one behind your back, exploiting your weakened state to easily lift you in his arms.
‎
"Get‎– let me go!"
‎
You tried to push him away whilst he moved back, to no avail. And just moving your good arm left you exhausted. Combined with the sudden aching that overtook your right one, it felt like you were stabbing yourself from the inside over and over.So you rested your head on his shoulder and let him take you...
...
Where was he going again...?
‎
"You, you wouldn't let anyone do this to you..."
‎
"I wouldn't have used my abilities out in the open‎–"
‎
He snapped back, before he caught himself and cleared his throat.
‎
"I'm... sorry. You're right, I wouldn't."
‎
Yoru sighed. Then, completely unprompted, he let out a whispered cuss under his breath.
‎
"I should've taken the chance when I had it."
‎
"Huh...?"
‎
"Nevermind."
‎
You felt the hot afternoon sun shine upon you once Yoru moved through the doorway, before he stopped out of nowhere. You took it upon yourself to lift your heavy eyelids and look at what was in front of you.
The wreckage from A went through the teleporter, enough to block the entrance to the fight. And it was as if Yoru knew what ran through your mind just by the way your foot twitched.
‎
"We'll be fine."
‎
You heard a bullet whizz by each of you from behind. Luckily, Yoru dodged it and immediately moved towards the rubble, allowing the walls to conceal you. He set you on the sand and took out his weapon.
‎
"I'll be back. Try to hold out until then, A/N."
‎
You quickly grabbed his sleeve.
‎
"Wait‎– don't, don't leave me here, let me help!"
‎
"I can't let you get hurt twice."
‎
"But Sage can bring me back, I can still‎–"
‎
Yoru got on one knee and held your shoulders.
‎
"I'm not letting you get hurt. Don't make me repeat myself."
‎
You stared at him for a few seconds. Despite your blurry vision and all of the noise from the fight deafening you, you could see the look in his eyes. His irises swam with vulnerability.
‎
"You're not giving up, huh...?"
‎
He stared at you and let the tense silence be your answer. But just as he went to stand up once more, you pulled him back and pressed your lips against his forehead.
‎
"I'm so lucky to have you."
‎
Yoru, stunned, simply blushed and weakly smiled.
‎
"I... could say the same thing."
‎
He caressed your cheek with his thumb, before finally standing up and digging his hand through the rift.
You closed your eyes in order to gather all of the energy that you could. And judging by the constant ringing in your ear combined with the repetitive beeping, it sounded like the spike had been planted. You put your left hand on the nearby stack of crates, helping yourself up. The omamori on your Bulldog caught your eye, its green colour shining brilliantly against the dullness that surrounded you. It almost worked in pulling you out of your dizzy state.
Your eyes locked on the rubble whilst you caught your breath. There must be a way to get through this. But how? Your roots were sliced from within.
You held out your incredibly shaky arm towards the entrance and took a deep breath in an effort to calm down and outline exactly what remained. Scent couldn't be produced and you couldn't squash anything either. That left you with… You perked up once you noticed one single root that was still connected.
The bomb. The bomb was still there!
It wasn't much, but you had to get creative with it. You took a few steps back and leaned on the wall, aiming towards the rubble. Then, you shot.
‎
A burst of sundew immediately stuck to it like ducklings to their mother. You then rushed to grab it with both hands, and, despite the ever increasing pain, you pulled on it as hard as you could. The sundew refused to let go. In fact, it stuck to it even more, which pulled the rubble with it. And the more you struggled, the more it held on.
The next thing you knew, you were on the ground once you'd finally pulled out the massive brick the sundew was attached to. This set off a domino effect.
You grabbed the Bulldog and rushed behind cover as the wreckage began to tumble over. Sand upon sand covered the air and the noise from this move split your ears for what felt like minutes.
Then... silence. The dust had settled.
You weakly clutched your Bulldog and leaned on the wall whilst you walked to the now-clear entrance.
‎
The fight could be seen through the open window. And so could the spike, surrounded by fire and being defused by Phoenix. The rest were clearly holding off someone in garden alongside Yoru who was behind them. He was only halfway through, and there were only a few seconds before the bomb would go off, judging by the black aura and the unnatural impact it had on the area around it. Victory should be guaranteed...
But that was until you noticed Sova near the doorway who aimed his bow and arrow, ready to shoot a dart. One dart, stall them and that would give the bomb the time it needed to explode. They didn't see him. It seems like he didn't see you, either.
Before he let go, you took aim and immediately began shooting, the bullets rapidly digging through him. It took only one more for you to take his life.
The Englishman immediately met your gaze and said something with a wave of his hand, but his words fell on deaf ears since all you could hear was the pounding of your heart. You huffed and stood up, taking a few steps back to lean against a nearby wall. The Bulldog fell out of your grip, and the omamori's gentle green colour was defiled with the trail of blood that continuously seeped out of you.
Then, it all went dark.
‎
❤ฺ·。
‎
You awoke from your deep slumber with not only a raging headache, but with an arm so sore it felt like it was only one wrong more away from melting off of your shoulder. Almost completely driven by instinct, you immediately sat up and clutched your head, a gentle voice adjacent to you immediately reacting to such a move.
‎
"Oh, A/N, try not to move too fast–!"
‎
The pain set in just as Sage held your shoulders, and you mumbled an 'ow'. It felt like the blood inside your body was swirling and sloshing inside you as it got used to the sudden movement.
‎
"Ah, really...? I turned my back on you for one second..."
‎
"Sorry... First mission, and stuff."
‎
"Don't start with that, you did great! Two kills on your first mission is something to be proud about!"
‎
You ran your fingers through your hair and began gently rubbing your head, the ringing in your ear slowly dissipating. It took you a moment to comprehend what she said. But once she did, guilt quickly set in.
‎
"Thanks... Yo, I wasn't too bothersome to revive, was I?"
‎
"Revive? No, you didn't die, you didn't die at all! You've been out for two hours, you actually survived!"
‎
You didn't believe her, despite the wide grin on her face. Probably trying to save you the embarrassment of dying on your first mission.
‎
"Totally..."
‎
"I'm not joking!" she smiled tenderly and clasped both hands together, "Ah, I– I know this sounds hard to believe, but you truly did."
‎
"Let me get this straight, you're saying Chamber tore all my roots and I survived?"
‎
"Not just your roots, A/N; he tore a few of your arteries as well and you still made it! It was miraculous!"
‎
She placed a finger on her chin once a new piece of information popped up.
‎
"Now that I think about it, theoretically, you should have passed out thirty seconds afterwards. Hypotension is no joke."
‎
You paused once you caught something from the corner of your eye. On a nearby counter right next to the sink was your trusty little Bulldog, the familiar omamori still tied to it. Unfortunately, it was soaked in blood. And you swore you could see that it was torn, as well.
Huh...
‎
"Really...? Maybe my luck's really turning over this time."
‎
"Possibly. On another note, if this happens again, I might have to put 'durable' in your files."
‎
She winked playfully.
‎
"Seriously? Wait, no, Brimstone might–"
‎
You heard two knocks before the door behind you swung open, revealing two very familiar silhouettes. Neon and Yoru solemnly stood near the doorway, a serious expression very unnatural for your Filipino friend to have.
But once she noticed that you were awake, her eyes glimmered with an abundance of joy.
‎
"A/N!"
‎
Uh oh.
Before you could prepare yourself, you were already pulled into a hug that put all the aching in your arm to shame. She hugged you even tighter (and knocked the air out of you for good measure) before finally pulling away.
‎
"A/N, you're alive!"
‎
"I'll... leave you three to talk. Erm, Neon?"
‎
"Huh?"
‎
"Brimstone?"
‎
"Wha– oh! Oh come on, she just woke up! Can't you tell him to give me a few minutes, at least?"
‎
Sage sheepishly smiled, both hands behind her back.
‎
"I'm sorry... This'll take just a few seconds, okay?"
‎
With a loud groan, Neon decided to follow the healer with an immense amount of reluctance. But you couldn't let her go without some reassurance.
‎
"I'll catch you later, Neon!"
‎
"I know you will!"
‎
The door slammed shut and they disappeared. You wanted to ask Yoru what that was all about; but you had a much better idea in mind.
‎
"I– I wanted to–"
‎
Just as Yoru looked back, he found himself pulled into another embrace. This one, however, didn't cause him immense pain.
‎
"Missed you."
‎
You mumbled. And to say Yoru was speechless would be a vast understatement. His mind drew blanks at such a sudden move, despite it not being the first time. And all he could really do in response was put one hand on your back.
‎
"You... Um, you had me worried back there, you know?"
‎
The words mindlessly escaped his mouth, but he didn't really do much to stop it.
‎
"Really?"
‎
"Yeah..."
‎
He quickly cleared his throat before he continued.
‎
"Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm impressed you got Sova. I don't know how you got through the rubble."
‎
You pulled away with an unamused expression.
‎
"I– I thought you died back there."
‎
"You need to expect more from me, dummy."
‎
He blushed and rolled his eyes.
‎
"I said don't take this the wrong way, 'dummy'."
‎
You glanced at the omamori on the counter behind him, but promptly looked back so that he wouldn't catch on.
‎
"So, uh, speaking of dying... Where do you get omamoris again? Shrines?"
‎
"Yeah."
‎
"Are you going there any time soon?"
‎
You tried to be discreet about it, but somehow, he still caught on and looked back to see what your eyes kept darting to. And he saw your weapon, the omamori you spoke of gently resting on top of it.
‎
"Huh, it's torn?"
‎
"Yeah."
‎
A meek smile forced itself on your lips as he walked towards the Bulldog and picked it up. Damp with your own coagulated blood, and torn open just as you thought.
‎
"Sorry about that."
‎
"What do you mean? It's a good thing."
‎
Despite scrutinising it, Yoru didn't sound as bothered as you did. In fact, he sounded pleased.
‎
"This means it did its job."
‎
You perked up at this, but you caught yourself before you did anything impulsive.
‎
"So... remember when you mentioned dinner?"
‎
"Totally. You said no."
‎
Yoru nervously cleared his throat.
‎
"Yeah, I, um, I remember. And I don't want to miss my chance this time."
‎
"Miss your chance?"
‎
"I don't like it when people get all up in my business. But you know what?" He pulled you close by the waist. "Maybe it's not so bad when you do it."
‎
You snickered.
‎
"You're just saying that because I almost died."
‎
A mischievous smile painted his previously callous features. No matter how much he tried, flirting just wasn't Yoru's thing. That much you could tell. But teasing definitely was.
‎
"Fine, guess I'll ask Sage to join me for the date I had in mind."
‎
The word 'date' immediately snatched your attention.
‎
"Wait. Okay, fine, let's hear it. What's the idea?"
‎
"Hanami's coming up and... I haven't celebrated with another person in a while. Wanna join me?"
‎
Hanami? That's right, it was the first of May; the trees must've bloomed already, and the celebration must've started. You beamed at this and completely disregarded your sore arm.
‎
"Is it just the two of us?"
‎
"Tch, yeah. I have a good spot booked and everything. There's this one old lady that sells the best dango, I'm thinking of going to her again this year. If, um, again, you don't have to, but–"
‎
You gently elbowed him with your good arm. Even then, he could barely feel the pain you intended him to feel.
‎
"Don't say that, yes I am. We're going. Where's the spot?"
‎
"Don't you need a minute to rest?"
‎
You proudly gestured to yourself.
‎
"I'm well rested. Don't I look like it?"
‎
Yoru stared at you for a few seconds.
You looked dishevelled. It was natural for someone who danced with death mere hours ago, but the confidence you radiated made it look like it was just the wind after a pleasant jog up a hill. He couldn't help but agree, and that was made obvious from the slight shimmer in his usually narrow eyes.
‎
"If you say so."
‎
You moved towards him.
‎
"So, where's the spot?"
‎
"Kitanomaru park–"
‎
The words were lodged in his throat once you took his hand in yours, pulling him out of the patient room and into the hallways. If you keep walking down this hallway, you'll eventually pass by someone who'll see you both like this. But he worked to convince himself that he didn't really mind...
You met his gaze with a warm smile, before pulling him close to you.
‎
"That sounds amazing."
‎
Just the thought of spending the day with Yoru on that river sounded like some kind of paradise only few would achieve. Fortunately, you were one of the 'few', and you were about to enjoy it as much as possible.
You knew what that day would entail, and you were ready for it.

FUSHIGOVER pt. I [THE LEAKING]
1 / 2 / 3 / 4
this ff is a fix, we’re living post 235 chapter. The rest is irrelevant
Tumblr media
Loving him felt like cheating.
I was a fucking cheater.
I've cheated countless times in my life. There was a part of me that was convinced that this incredible luck I for some reason possessed would finally run out one day. I mean, everyone had their limits.
Well, that day definitely was not today.
I was in love with Megumi Fushiguro.
And I was more that ready to tell him that.
Actually no, scratch that. I wasn't. Despite being relatively brave (I was a jujutsu sorcerer after all), I'd much more prefer to exorcise another curse than tell him the truth. Reasons? Multiple. He was my friend. A good one at that. And the blood-freezing amount of shit we've been through together...
I mean, it takes two to tango, right?
Well, let's just put it that way. I didn't see myself tango-ing with Fushiguro anytime soon.
Maybe I was blind. Maybe I needed Gojo's Six Eyes to see what I've been so desperately wanting to see for the past few months, but unfortunately, this technique was, for some reason, reserved only for him. Well, that sucked. Almost as much as my mental state that morning.
'Didn't sleep much?'
The bed was definitely too small for two people, but I didn't really treat Nobara that way - she was a part of me by that time. A whole year of studying together, training together, shopping together, crying together was enough to blend us into one human being. Sort of.
'I'm so done.' I sighed. What would I give to hide under the bedsheets and never come out. At least for the next 15 minutes. 'It's insane that we still have classes.'
'It is', she nodded and snuck under my bedsheets to hug me tightly. 'Two more years and you'll be in the clear. So get up and let's go. We've got things to do.'
I stood up and slowly went into the bathroom, to make sure nobody would confuse me with a curse and I wouldn't get exorcised by mistake. That would suck. I shivered in front of the mirror, fixing my hair and putting on some sunscreen. Nobara joined me a moment later, being the only girl in the whole school that actually understood the importance of SPF filters, especially in this field of work. We were exposed to the weirdest shit on the entire planet, so the least we could do was putting on some cream.
'I've heard that he's coming back.'
'Today?' I tried not to sound too excited, but I apparently failed, as my best friend suddenly chuckled.
'Yup, today. So, is that it? Is that THE date? Should I prepare for being the only single person out of us two?' Nobara put the cream back in the drawer, delicately tapping the rest onto her right cheek.
'No.'
'Phenomenal. I've endured your mental breakdowns for the past four months, so I'll guess another few won't kill me. I mean...' She pointed at the left side of her face. The scars were getting less red by the day, but we both knew - they weren't going anywhere anytime soon. 'I've survived that. But still, (Y/N). You're hopeless.'
'I'm considerate.'
'You were.' Nobara nodded, catching my glance in the mirror. 'But he's fine now. Or... relatively fine.' She shrugged. 'Whatever. It's not gonna get worse. Someone has to unpack his trauma. You're the best choice. You were the first one to crack the 'fushigover' joke, weren't you?'
I was. And I wasn't particularly proud of that.
'I was drunk. And you were the one who gave me that... Vodka Sour, so it's technically your fault.' Alcohol wasn't my best friend, but Nobara and booze got along pretty well, so sometimes I got dragged somewhere in between them. 'I... Can you even imagine that?' I turned around to face Kugisaki. 'What would I say? Hi, Fushiguro. I've just wanted to tell you that I think I might kinda love you. I know you probably have more important things on your mind than that, but I was about to explode, so please, just don't think about it too much.'
'You're hopeless.'
'I'm realistic', I corrected. My morning routine was over. I was ready to go out. Finally. ‘I can’t just go out like that. It’ll be a disaster.'
'GIRLS!' Somebody opened the door and barged inside my room. 'Have you heard? He's back!' Yuuji suddenly appeared next to Nobara. His eyes shone in excitement. 'Fushiguro's finally back!'
My heart skipped a beat.
'Already? Gojo's back too?'
'Yup.' Yuuji nodded and looked at me. 'Oh, (Y/N). He wants to talk to you.'
I frowned. Gojo wanted to talk to me? Right after he and Fushiguro came back from Kioto? That was... surprising, to say at least.
'Now?'
'Yeah. Asap. That's why I came actually.' Yuuji smiled. He was an angel. 'I kinda got too excited. Oh, is that THAT SPF?'
I exchanged a look with Nobara. She seemed quite amused, but a small crease forming on her formed made feel me a little anxious.
Praying I wouldn't see Fushiguro on my way to the Gojo's office, I almost run through the corridors. I've been desperate to see him for the past few weeks, but when the day finally came, I wish I could fall under the face of the Earth and never come back.
It's been almost a month since Gojo got Fushiguro out. Or rather, since Gojo got Sukuna out of Fushiguro's body. That day... I couldn't say I remembered it very well because of the sheer amount of emotions I went through, but even the slightest thought of Megumi's body, laying there lifeless, was making me shake. Oh, that picture was tattooed in my head.
If only you could erase it.
'You're leaking.' That was the first thing I've heard when I entered the room.
'Huh?'
The white-haired man sat in front of me. His gaze was piercing. Gojo smiled and pointed a finger on me.
'I've been wondering for a while now. Sukuna is hiding somewhere, so some disturbances are normal. I'd be surprised, if there weren't any.' Gojo scratched his head. 'But the amounts of cursed energy in this school are ridiculously unbalanced. So I figured, someone has to be in a very bad state.' Gojo crossed his arms, but he didn't really look intimidating - rather amused. 'And it's you.'
'Me.' I repeated after him, not really sure, what to think. 'That's...'
Gojo tilted his head a bit, looking like a curious puppy. No way this man was the most powerful sorcerer.
'That's a very suggestive thing to say.'
The sorcerer chuckled and stood up.
'That was a good one. But nah. Your cursed energy is leaking out of you.'
If Gojo was joking, then the joke didn't sit right at all. What was even worse, most of the jokes we usually cracked together landed perfectly, so combining that with his piercing gaze made me feel even more confused. He wasn't joking. He was serious.
'(Y/N), I seriously adore you. And your sense of humour is just the best. But I've had my eyes on you since that day.' The stronger sorcerer alive, my ass. He suddenly looked somehow apologetic. 'I don't think...' He sighed and I felt weak. 'Let me put it this way. I felt your cursed energy during the fight, even though you were pretty far away. How is that possible?'
'I...' I was speechless. 'I have no idea.'
'You lost control. And you haven't regained it ever since.'
'It's not possible.' I panicked a little when I realised that my voice was actually shaking. 'I've got it all under control. I don't feel bad. Or any different.'
'You're lying.'
I was.
'You have to get it sorted out as soon as possible, otherwise we're going to have our hands full again. And I seriously want a break.' I've never heard Gojo speak like that. Right there, in that moment, he seemed... tired. 'But anyway, congratulations.'
'What for?'
'For getting him out.' The air in the room suddenly became colder. 'If it wasn't for your cursed energy, things might have been... different.' Gojo's gaze wandered for a second, looking for something behind the window. When he finally turned back to me, his fatigue vanished instantly. 'Whatever. I'm glad it happened. Just get it under control. Want some mochi?'
'Yeah.' I needed the sugar to process everything my teacher has just said. 'Maybe even two.'
'Take three.' Chewy rice balls felt somehow calming. 'Oh, and Megumi can't wait to see you. He was sulking most of the time in Kioto, but seemed weirdly excited to come back. And I'm good at connecting the dots. If your cursed technique was able to get his will to live back, then I guess he'll be more than happy to see you.' Gojo stretched his arms. 'Just don't scare him.'
'With what?'
'You know.' Yeah, I had it coming. 'The leaking. Megumi's inexperienced.'
'That was awful.'
'I know. But you laughed.'
I guess I really did.
———
It's really going to be an unhinged series. But we're going to have a lot of fun. Muahaha

fuck it I know I said yesterday I'm gonna hold on and wait but I just need to get some thoughts out of my head.
Content covered: love and empathy to Caiti, why he's taking so long to get his statement out, and frustrations with balancing personal mental health vs understanding that this isn't about *you*
1) Love to Caiti
I can't even imagine what she's going through right now. Regardless of if George had innocent or malicious intentions, it's obvious that this situation was incredibly traumatic for her. And I'm so glad that she has friends that are publicly willing to support her. I talked about it when Shelby spoke up so I won't bring it up again, but I get what she's going through and how much it fucking sucks. Hopefully, no matter the outcome, she can find peace and healing moving forward.
----------
2) Why he's taking so long
*I'll make statements empathizing with how difficult the self-defence process must be, but it in no way condones or excuses his potential behaviours or actions involved in this situation. He is a grown man and can deal with the consequences as such
The rush to get a statement and potentially closure to move on is understandable but still super stressful all the same. Given the severity of how this will impact his entire life moving forward, I wouldn't be surprised if he's seeking legal counsel or other advice before proceeding with a statement. Additionally, this is likely a situation where there may be little to no evidence that proves he didn't do anything, so whatever he presents has to be circumstantially rock solid with little room for doubt.
This isn't twitter drama where you can link a few screenshots and a twitlonger, or hop on stream quick to spout out your perspective. He stands to lose absolutely everything in his life today and it all depends on what he has to say and how he manages to say it. I know if I was in a situation like that (in the case that he legitimately believes he hasn't intentionally done anything wrong) I would be preparing in every way possible, short of a lawyer speaking for me, to clear my name to the best of my ability.
It makes sense that he's taking so long. He's probably not trying to ignore it and move on, but the lack of clarity on timelines certainly doesn't help him either. I wish he'll say something now too, but there's nothing wrong with taking longer than anticipated to detail out (probably with some fairly intimate detail that may be uncomfortable for anyone to share at such a scale) the most important stream of his life.
----------
3) Autism and grieving a special interest
There are (or were) a lot of neurodivergent people in this community. Like, a LOT. Some of us are able to drop hyperfixations or special interests and move on to something new with relative ease. Others struggle a hell of a lot more. You're not a bad person if you mourn the loss of a special interest in your life, it's just important that you keep the right perspective about it.
It's not as strong now as it was years ago, but the dream team have been a special interest for me since like July 2020. Emotionally, it honest to goodness feels like a loved one has died and I'm having a really hard time coping with it. Fuck, like I called in sick to work today because I the mental toll is so extreme I'm feeling physically ill.
Things will be okay and I'm so grateful to have Sleep Token right now, otherwise I don't know if I would be in a very safe place at the moment. It's really fucking hard and your pain is valid, despite what neurotypicals or neurodivergents with different experiences may say. The important thing to keep in mind is that your pain does not outweigh the pain of those genuinely hurt in this situation (Caiti in this case)
----------
4) Moving forward
I guess it all hinges on what's to come later today. Regardless of the outcome, things will never be the same here and I would be very surprised if any of the dream team carry on with their careers in the same capacity. I'm glad that people seem to be self-blaming less this time compared to the drituation. It still hurts to see this once-vibrant community crumble in such a short period of time.
I don't know what I'll do from here but I don't think the last 4 years were a waste. The dream team was a huge source of happiness during some of the darkest times of my life, and I don't think those memories could ever be tainted.
----------
Much love to everyone, whether you're still hanging around or not. I hope everyone finds happiness wherever they end up and that the truth will prevail in the end

It takes a village to raise a family: part 3
Part 2 , part 4
I am...so attached and brain rotted to this villager man- he is getting his own tag as grandpa flint because I love him that much
Rural au yet again by the amazing @angelpuns
At some point they are gonna get mad at all the pings lmao
The river runs cold in the spring, when the streets are making fruit and the leaves are the prettiest of green, pinks, and blues. The prettiest rocks are embedded in sand, just treasures to find. Sometimes I'll find something pretty, sometimes I won't.
But today I found something shiney, and golden. It wasn't very thick, it wasn't that long either. It was flat on one end and round on the other with letters on the flat side in a circle. I've never seen anything like it before. It was so pretty.
Of course I put it on my stall, but that's not the important part today. Today a festival was to be held, more importantly a cooking contest. I rolled the paper up and closed down my stall, scurrying to the outside of the village, through the woods. The trees barely let sun peek through, leaving the wonders of butterflies that pass under the little bits of light all the more pretty.
My dear husband always told me to look for the little things....well I know the human splinter is a bit of a sour crab apple. So I might as well cook with him.
He wasn't very happy to open the door to see me, even more when I walked around him inside. "Come on get your pans and whatever cooking stuff you have and let's get cooking!"
"excuse me? We are not cooking-" he slammed the door and follows me into the kitchen, paying him no mind I pulled a few pots out.
"yes we are, you will not become a sour raisen at this age-" I slid the pots onto the counter, hearing him sputter.
"I am not a sour raisen!" He pushed the cabinet door closed and glares. "We are not cooking"
"...yes we are" I held out the paper and popped his nose slightly, watching the anger fill his eyes before he snatched the paper, looking it over. ".....yeah okay I could use that money-"
"exactly, now let's get to cooking" I look around and realize this man has not one apron. "...okay we need kitchen equipment-"
"we have kitchen equipment- we have the necessities-" splinter grumbles, getting out a cook book. "You are one demanding little racoon"
I couldn't help but grin at him as he sits on the ground, opening it up. "Okay if we are going to do this, I have a few demands...1 don't be a rude little shit, 2 we have to be quiet the kids are down for a nap and 3 we split the earnings 20/80"
"done deal! Ooo pie, Im going to try that!" I hit the page, grinning with all my teeth.
"alright..I'll uh...do a basic soup I guess?" He stands up and before I could register what happened he grabbed me by my scruff and put me on the counter. "Alright racoon, let's do this"
"HAHAA!! yes!"
With a few mishaps and a few changes to the ingredients like instead of flour we used baking soda, instead of sugar we used salt..you know the good substitutes....we made a mess.
With the two of us standing at the cook out table, with my pie a burnt, bubble, uncooked mess and with splinter's halfway untasteful soup we locked ourselves in 8th and 9th place.
I think that's a win

SSR Epel Felmier Union Birthday Personal Story: Part 3
“Happy Birthday”
(Part 1) (Part 2) Part 3
Tumblr media
[Pomefiore Dorm – Birthday Party Venue]
Floyd: The next question is~
Floyd: “If you were to join any dorm other than Pomefiore, which dorm would you choose?”
Epel: Savanaclaw!
Floyd: Yep, totally knew you were gonna say that~ So, pick a different dorm.
Epel: Eh!?
Floyd: You just wanna go there 'cause you wanna be strong, right? It's no fun when we already know the answer.
Epel: Urgh… I guess you're right, but… I can't think of another dorm I'd want to go to…
Epel: Ummm…… Then, my second choice would be Ignihyde… I guess?
Floyd: Ahah, that's like the complete opposite dorm~
Epel: You're the one who said to pick a different dorm…
Floyd: I mean like, it's not really the kind of dorm that someone who wants to be strong would choose, yeah?
Epel: The reason I chose Ignihyde is because I like magical wheels.
Floyd: Ooo, I seeee. I rode on the back of one before, yeah, they're fun and super thrilling~
Epel: Yeah, you get me! They can go real fast, and it's so awesome how they can take the curves in the road.
Epel: And, that rounded form and the cool design are just awesome!
Epel: So, I actually watch a ton of the magical wheel races they broadcast on TV, and…
Epel: All those pro-styled machines got customized colors and features, and are just way too cool!
Floyd: Yeah, it's neat that you can change it up as you like. When you get bored, you can just change to another design.
Epel: Yeh! But, if'n I'm wantin' to do it by me lonesome, I gotsta gain the know-how and skills in magical engineerin'…
Epel: If'n I studied at Ignihyde, I might could learn some stuff I’d use in the future, y'know.
Epel: I gots me some pretty nimble hands, so I'm bettin' I'd get good at workin' with ‘em machines in no time!
Epel: 'Specially 'cause y'need t'use tons of diff'rent magical engineerin' skills to work a magical wheel…
Epel: If'n I wenta Ignihyde, I'd get ta learn stuff that'd be useful when I buy me own personal machine!
Floyd: Uh huh, I see. But you don't really have to go all the way to Ignihyde to study magical engineerin’, you know?
Epel: Urgh… That's true… I'll do my best in my studies to be able to ride my own cool magical wheel…
Floyd: Ahaha, good luck~ But puttin' all that aside…
Floyd: Just chattin' with you like this kinda makes me see you in a whole new light.
Floyd: Never knew you liked cool clothes or magical wheels… And when you get all excited, your speakin' gets all weird, too.
Epel: That's… Vil-san is always telling me to make sure I be careful with my words whenever I'm around other people…
Floyd: Ohoo~ So you're sayin' it'd be bad if Betta-chan-senpai were to find out~
Epel: Urgh, I-I got a bad feeling about this…! Wait, Floyd-san!! Y'gotta keep all y'heard today from Vil-san!
Tumblr media
Floyd: 'Kay, now the interview's done. That's means it's time for the thing we've all been waitin' for…
Epel: The presentation of the "Gift of Good Fortune."
Floyd: Finally~ I've been reaaaally looking forward to this.
Epel: Me too!
Floyd: Heh. Guppy-chan, you're really rarin' to go, huh.
Epel: YEH, C'MON N' LEZZGO!
Floyd: I'm tellin' ya, I can't understand a word you're saying. Eh, whatever, here I go~
Floyd: GUPPY-CHAN, HAPPY BIRTHDAY~!

Bad idea right? Chapter 7
When the boys woke up the next day it was early. The sun was up and they were spooning. Ricky was the little spoon as always. EJ woke up first and couldn’t help from looking at his adorable baby boy laying next to him. Ricky quickly wakes up and looks at EJ
Ricky: what?
EJ: nothing just taking in the view
Ricky: but you’re looking at me (Ricky pauses for a min) oh I’m the view
EJ: the best view
Ricky: you say the sweetest things to me sweetheart
EJ: hey that’s my line
Ricky: sorry it was to perfect not to use
EJ: you’re forgiven. So what do you wanna see today? Flight is late tonight I think we have to be there by 7 to be 2 hours early
Ricky: well I have about 30 bucks so whatever that can get me which most likely only covers food
EJ: yeah I don’t have much either.
Ricky: so what are we gonna do?
EJ: I’m googling free things to do in New York
Ricky: smart
EJ: we can explore Central Park, ride the Staten Island ferry, or explore colleges here.
Ricky: wait you thinking about going to college here? What about our plan?
EJ: it doesn’t hurt to tour a campus and besides it’ll be easier to transfer after at least a semester we can still do our plan
Ricky: why would it be easier?
EJ: idk maybe because you’re barely passing high school now and schools here are tough to get into the first time around. Transferring can work for any college as long as you get in
Ricky: if we get in
EJ: we could. If you can pass after last semester you can do it. Just need more extracurriculars and a winning essay
Ricky: right cause I’m such a good writer.
EJ: I’ll help you obviously
Ricky: ok let’s actually get dressed and do something instead of talking all day
EJ: fine. But what are we doing?
Ricky: college tours.
EJ: ok we start with closest to here: NYU. I’m not even gonna attempt to try ivy options for you
Ricky: good plan. I’ll shower first you get a tour guide or whatever
EJ: I think we’ll just need a map we can explore on our own.
Ricky: fine
Ricky takes his shower quick followed immediately by EJ. He was barely out the bathroom when EJ walked in. After they were both ready to go the boys were too late for breakfast so they just took coffee to go from the lobby. They weren’t that hungry anyway. NYU wasn’t too far so they walked in order to save some cash. The campus isn’t huge so touring wasn’t so bad but after a few hours they needed a break. They stopped at a nearby pizza place that sold pizza pretty cheap by the slice. Cheapest meal they’ve ever had honestly. They were still tired so they took the metro (sharing a card) to the next stop that they could ride another metro to near the airport. It was the staten island ferry.
Ricky: I thought we were touring colleges
EJ: we did. I figured we were still tired could sit for a while and we were there for longer than I thought. It’s already 3 pm. By the time we’re done we won’t have much time left. Figured getting us near the airport was the better option. Besides I don’t wanna get excited about a bunch of schools here if you don’t even get in.
Ricky: sensible plan. But will we be able to sit down?
EJ: yes the ferry has seats. We will get one outside so we can see the Statue of Liberty.
Ricky: we gonna get to see that? Cool
EJ: what did you think the staten island ferry was?
Ricky: I honestly didn’t even think about it
EJ: it’s the cheapest way to see the statue.
Ricky: how close does it get
EJ: idk I guess we will see
After the hour ride on the ferry the time was getting closer to leaving time. They grabbed another quick bite since the hot dogs were cheap and they had just enough for a cab to the airport. The metro was going to take a while and they figured why not? (They are flying out of LaGuardia since it’s cheaper flights and closer to the ferry than jfk).
Once they got to the airport they had quite some time to kill so they just exploded after tsa which did kill some time but not as much as they thought. They didn’t have any money left so they didn’t buy anything. Wasn’t really anything good anyway. Soon it was time to go home and they did. Ricky drive EJ back to school and then drove himself home. (Yes he told his dad). EJ could’ve rode home with the group but they got earlier flights home and that was fine since he had Ricky. Ricky luckily saved some money in his car which paid for parking or he would’ve been in trouble. He text EJ later when he got home
Ricky: I’m home
EJ: glad to know you made it home safe
Ricky: I’m just glad I was able to pay parking. My dad must have thought about that when I was gone.
EJ: wouldn’t surprise me he always looks out for you
Ricky: anyway I’m tired good night
EJ: good light love you baby
Ricky: love you too sweetheart.
They fell asleep very fast since it had been a long day of walking.
Note: they carried their stuff with them all day and had backpacks as their carry ons. It was only a 2 day trip.

First Impressions - Chapter 4
Tumblr media
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10 AO3
Something a little different this time. Here's just a little snippet from the middle of the chapter.
Beware of spoilers below.
“Stop checking me out.”
Okay. Yeah. Definitely still completely wasted, he could barely form his sentences, slurring words and fumbling his movements but who cared. Everything was shit fucked anyway so it was like whatever.
“No.”
Eddie squinted his eyes, trying to make sense out of the expression on Harrington’s face.
He couldn’t really focus and his eyes kept drifting like they had a mind of their own. He didn't exactly trust himself to speak, he had no filter when he was drunk and even less impulse control and once he got to this level he was barely able to follow the thread of a conversation.
Harrington shrugged. “What? You’re super hot, but you’ve got a shitty attitude. You seem dead set on hating me for some reason and you're a dickhead. So…”
Eddie scowled at him, feeling like there was something there he should probably latch onto.
“That’s not a very straight thing to say.”
Yeah, that was probably it.
“I’m not very straight.”
Oh.
Well…
Fuck.
“Since when?”
“Since always. That’s how it works, Munson. I didn’t wake up one day and decide ‘I’m gonna try out bisexuality today’.”
Well that would just be ridiculous.
“Duh.” Eddie snorted. It wasn’t funny, why was he finding it funny? But it was kinda funny. It almost sounded like he was giggling. What? “I know that.”
“You’re the one who asked the question.”
“Oh… shit. I did do that.”
“Yeah, you did. But I told you I worked at a club called Dorothy’s and you didn’t figure it out?”
Eddie pouted.
C’mon brain work.
Chug-chug, toot-toot.
Hurry up.
“Oh!” He tried to snap his fingers and failed miserably. “It’s a gay club.”
“Well done.”
“I got there eventually. Guess I didn’t want to ‘figure it out’.”
He probably wasn't supposed to say that, but who cares?
Not him.
“For what reason?”
Eddie attempted a shrug, blowing air out between his lips and waving his hands around nonsensically. “I don’t know, man. Something in my brain just wants to dislike you. Everyone keeps telling me I’m only seeing what I want to see and like I get it but I don’t? Everything up here,” he knocked his knuckles against his forehead a little harder than he meant to, “is kinda fucked anyway.”
“So is that why you’ve been having such a bad night? You’ve been shit talking me and no one is putting up with it?”
“Oh, no. I wouldn’t call it shit talking, I’d call it vicious slander.”
“Why?”
Eddie leaned forward attempting to spread a sly smile across his face.
“Wormtongue.” He fell back against the wall again, cackling at the bemused expression over Harrington’s pretty face. “It’s not all the reason it's been a bad night but it's part of the reason. When I get angry I can get poisonous. I spread it all around like a fucking miasma.” He said with wide eyes, wiggling his fingers.
He tried to pull his knees up to rest his arms on them, but again with the fucking pants.
He was able to pull his knees up eventually but it left him slumped on the wall, practically lying down in the bathroom stall. Harrington made no move to help, just watched him with a cocked eyebrow.
Oh well, it was nice to lie down.
Lying down was great.
And he didn’t have to look at Mr.Hair anymore.
He could just talk to the ceiling.
Eddie sighed heavily and rolled his head around, just enjoying the spinny movement.
“Oh, but you’re right, precious. I do have a shitty attitude. And maybe I do like to see you as an asshole on purpose. Makes things easier. Makes it easier not to think about you a certain way if I just pretend you’re still the same ass you were in school.”
“I mean I was an ass in school. I’m sorry for that, by the way. I’m sorry for what I did and what I didn’t do, the things I ignored and let happen-”
“Don’t- don't do that, man.” Eddie croaked, horrified to find his voice was starting to shake a little and his eyes were starting to burn. His mood was suddenly soured, remembering the last time he’d had a conversation like this, his heartbreak hitting him all over again but somehow stronger this time.
Fucking alcohol.
“Don’t do what?”
“Don’t fucking apologise for school. He couldn’t even say the words. He told me- he told me he did. He told me he’d said the words out loud and that I mustn’t be remembering right but I don’t think he ever did.”

With a building as large as the Loonatics’ HQ on Blanc, one might expect it to take a while to find a person who has the ability to traverse anywhere in the base in an instant. Slam, however, had a guess as to where Rev might have gone and followed his gut.
Sure enough, as soon as he turned the corner into the hallway connecting their rooms, he saw a pajama-clad roadrunner dash out of his room and toss a mound of feminine clothes in front of Ace’s door, before dashing right back.
Taking a breath, Slam made his way over.
Meanwhile, Rev simply let himself fall face-first onto his bed, not minding the confetti of post-its it kicked up or the ones still stuck to the sheets. The paper-riddled pillow swallowed up Rev’s anxious whine and following weary moan.
A deep knock sounded at the door, forcing a groan to follow all of Rev’s displeased noises.
Within a second he was at the door, opening it to see the person he knew was there.
“Hey Slam,” he sighed. “Look I don’t know why you followed me here but whatever reason it is I’m sure it’s pointless. Every single thing I’ve done today was a failure and Tech is probably going to be looking down on me for the rest of our lives. So maybe you should just go because there’s nothing you can do that’ll have a single chance of fixing my monumental landslide of screw-ups before Tech chews me out for everything.”
Grunting, Slam pointed sharply down the hall, back in the direction Rev was running from.
“Are you seriously trying to get me to go talk to him?! Why? So I can expedite my one-way ticket to losing my best friend? Absolutely not! I’m just gonna lock myself in my room for as long as I can pretending like everything’s fine until an emergency or the threat of starvation pulls me out.”
As Rev began pacing at the side of his bed, Slam let himself in. He grimaced at how many sticky notes coated every inch of the room.
“I mean, maybe if I’m quick about it I can channel the security feed onto my personal computer to monitor Tech’s position in the base so I can sneak around to grab food every once in a while. That would require some rewiring which I’m not very good at but maybe if I quickly do some research I can learn how to do it and complete the installation before any sort of unavoidable circumstances forces me to come into contact with him.”
Slam picked up a sticky note, his face shifting into a grimace as he read it.
“But who knows how long I’ll actually be able to avoid him? Surely he wouldn’t cut off our friendship in the middle of a mission, right? So if I can just put off any conversations while on missions and channel the camera feeds into my room I’ll never have to acknowledge that I’ve screwed everything up. Yeah. That’s a plan. Right?”
Flicking the note off his finger, Slam stared at him flatly.
“What?! It’s not like I have any better options!”
In three smooth steps and a swift swipe, Rev was under Slam’s arm being carried like luggage.
“Hey! Let me go! What are you doing?! I need to stay locked in my room otherwise none of my plans will-…”
Now in the hallway, Rev saw Lexi’s door closing. Meanwhile, Ace strained as he bent over to grab the clothes at his doorstep. “Ugh, come on Duck,” he uttered to himself. “You know this is dry clean only.” After picking up the clothes with a pained grunt, he stepped inside.
Rev didn’t dare look in the direction of Tech’s room, instead, he continued his attempt at flailing out of Slam’s grasp.
Effortlessly, Slam turned and took a few more steps toward the hall’s entrance.
While his efforts were futile, Rev wouldn’t stop.
That was, until he heard Tech’s confused voice.
“Uh… hi, Slam? And… Rev?”
Slam used his free hand to grab Rev’s shirt collar like the scruff of a cat and set him in front of Tech. Instead of immediately letting go, he reached for Tech’s wrist and pulled it towards Rev’s, letting go once Tech got the memo to hold on.
He nodded with finality before heading to his room.
Rev’s first instinct, of course, was to run away. He twitched with the urge, but Tech’s firm grasp on his wrist meant he’d just be pulling the person he wanted to run from along for the ride.
“Well, it seems like he wants us to talk,” Tech said, watching Slam’s door close.
“Haha… Yeah…”
Returning his focus, he looked Rev up and down. “Wou-”
“Tech I’m really sorry! You were really scared when I was in danger and you were shaking and I’ve never actually seen you so scared and it was all my fault so I’m really really sorry about forcing you through all that when you didn’t deserve it and…” He looked away. “I’m sorry…”
Taking a deep breath, Tech ran his free hand over his ears. “Can we speak somewhere else? Preferably somewhere more private?” Tech looked past him, pursing his lips. “How about your room?”
Rev laughed nervously. “W-Why there? I mean we’re closer to your room so it’d probably be more convenient to…” The insistent look Tech was giving him forced his reply. “Okay…”
With a nod, Tech led him to the next door over. His door.
Sighing, Rev let him in.
It was at that moment Rev truly realized the terrible state of his room. He couldn’t bear to see what Tech thought, so he just stared off into a colorful corner.
“Oh…” Tech said. “This is… worse than my lab. Much worse…”
“I wasn’t expecting you to ever come in here…”
“Yeah. I could’ve guessed.”
Rev heard Tech take a step toward him and quickly stepped further into his room, stopping beside his bed. “If I knew you’d be visiting I’d have cleaned it up,” he said. “But you know, when it’s just you, why clean your room right? It’s not like you need to impress yourself.”
The sigh Rev heard cut right through his chest.
“Look, I talked to Lexi and Ace. I know you’ve been trying to improve your confidence since we talked earlier.”
He covered his face.
“It feels like what I said didn’t really get through to you.”
His throat tightened.
“Rev, I told you to have some confidence in yourself because you were already on the right track. I specifically wanted you to relax, and from what I’ve heard, you’ve been doing the exact opposite from the second our conversation ended.”
With a whine, Rev backed himself into his bed, stumbling onto it after which he quickly pulled his knees up and hugged them.
“Sorry,” he meekly apologized.
Tech sighed, bending down and picking a patch of sticky notes off of Rev’s bed until he could sit on it as well, more comfortably than Rev likely was.
“I also told you not to make things awkward, and hearing the lengths you went to in an effort to impress me after I told you to relax… is pretty unsettling.”
“Oh…” Rev swallowed thickly, curling up a little tighter. “So everything I did… was pointless. I put myself through increasingly embarrassing and dangerous situations until you got involved and thought I got hurt…”
“That’s a pretty negative way of looking at it, though, not entirely wrong…”
Rev fell onto his side, letting out a shuddering breath.
“I just wanted to prove that I cared about you and was listening to what you had to say, but obviously I wasn’t because if I just followed the incredibly easy advice you gave me, none of this would have happened…”
“You didn’t have to go out of your way to prove anything, Rev. Just take a few more seconds to think about whatever advice I give you next time, okay?”
He just turned onto his side, facing away from Tech. “Look, it’s late. Maybe-” His voice cracked, forcing him to clear his throat. “Maybe you should just go. I’ll probably just find another dumb way to hurt you again if you don’t.”
“It’s really not that big a deal.”
“Just… Just go…” His voice came out forced. “I’ve been a pretty… awful friend today. Let alone a best friend or… anything else. You should just get some rest or something… take a break from… dealing with me…”
“Seriously, it’s fine. I promise.” Tech waited a moment, but didn’t get a reply. “Rev?”
Silence followed, leaving Tech awkwardly sitting on Rev’s bed in his room plastered in sticky notes.
Despite the uncomfortable atmosphere, he didn’t feel right just letting Rev stew in his own misery. He tried to think of some solution, looking around as though an answer would pop out at him among a sea of colorful paper.
Actually…
Now that he was taking a moment, he noticed a few things weren’t covered. Rev’s PC monitor, of course, discounting the few notes stuck to the sides. Obviously the electrical outlets. And… the pictures on the walls and shelves.
Tech focused on them, noting that some of the pictures had post-its on them… but they never covered the areas where Rev’s friends and family were. Rev himself was covered in them, though, leaving Tech to wonder if he should be concerned about that. Then, on Rev’s nightstand, he noticed a picture he was very familiar with.
It was just him and Rev, standing side by side in front of a simulated podium and crowd, celebrating their joint effort in rebuilding the Virtual Trainer in Blanc HQ. Of course, right after the picture, Rev just had to make a joke about all the VR games he’d play in it. Normally, Tech would have gone on a big rant about it not being a toy and how misusing it was disrespectful and yadda yadda… but he didn’t. Rev had obviously made the joke to provoke him, as by that point, they’d gotten in the habit of arguing just for the thrill of it… but Tech just couldn’t muster the energy to even fake being mad at him. With how much help Rev had given on the project, cutting the time to completion in half, Tech was too happy to refuse any use Rev could think up for it. And the look Rev gave him when he replied to his joke with ‘have fun’, that surprise and excitement… it left him with a feeling that would only continue to bloom from then on.
Warmth filled Tech as he recalled the memory, an experience he felt often thanks to a copy of the photo he had hanging above his work computer. Then, that warmth died out and curled dully in his gut, as Tech looked again at the photo and saw that Rev was covered in two sticky notes.
It didn’t sit right with him to see such an important photo, at least to him, tainted like that.
Tech got up from the bed, hearing the faintest shuttering gasp from his friend as he stood. There was no doubt Rev would brush off his concern, so Tech elected to continue toward the nightstand. He leaned down to better read whatever thing Rev thought was important enough to not only take note of, but cover such a wonderful moment with.
‘For some reason, he doesn’t hate you,’ the first line said, a scribbled arrow pointing toward Tech in the picture beside it. ‘Don’t do anything that could make him change his mind.’
With concern growing, Tech continued onto the second note.
‘He gave you a second chance. Don’t waste it. Don’t screw up again.’
A twinge of unease hit Tech as he read the final, repeatedly underlined command.
‘Don’t be a failure.’
Without a second thought, he plucked the two notes off of the picture. Looking over them again just left him with the same emotions, so he stepped over and sat on the bed.
“Rev,” he spoke softly. “What are these?”
Thankfully, Rev actually pulled up his head to look at whatever Tech had asked him about. Upon seeing what he had, however, he let out a gasp and rushed to snatch them away.
Tech, of course, made sure that didn’t happen.
Given that Rev couldn’t reach the notes without leaning over Tech or getting up from the bed, he simply whined and sat into a defeated slouch.
“You weren’t supposed to see those…” Rev mumbled.
“I wasn’t supposed to see your entire room.”
“…You really weren’t supposed to see those…”
Tech sighed. “Why did you write them?”
Folding his arms, Rev turned away. “Just a reminder… to not ruin our friendship.”
“You’re not going to ruin our friendship, Rev. Not by accident, at least. I’ve already told you that I can handle you making a few mistakes.”
Rev didn’t respond.
“Speaking of mistakes,” Tech said, “earlier I told you to treat any accidental minor offense you cause me like any other mistake, and well…” He rubbed his neck. “Maybe that was a mistake on my part. Though, I don’t think I can be blamed for lacking the foresight on that one.”
The strange admission caught Rev’s attention, making him glance at Tech briefly before averting his gaze and going quiet again.
“As it turns out, you don’t really handle any mistakes very well. At least, not the ones you made today while taking advice from Lexi and Ace.”
“I… I usually know enough before trying things that I don’t make any mistakes…”
“And I’m guessing that this,” Tech gestured vaguely to the room, “isn’t a one-off thing you’ve done just for me.”
“To this… extent… no. But… yeah. I usually keep it all on my PC… but when I really need to memorize things… this is how I do it…”
“Hm.” Tech glanced down at the notes. “Look, I’m not an expert or anything, but this just… doesn’t seem right.”
Rev flinched, huddling into himself.
“Clearly, you really don’t like to let people down, and that’s normal. But, freaking out over small mistakes, researching for days in an attempt to avoid them… it doesn’t take a genius to know that’s not healthy.” Looking around, his eyes landed on more photos, some showing Rev’s friends. His family.
His father.
The memory of Rev groveling at his feet, pleading for help in impressing Ralph Runner, flashed in his head. “A year ago, we weren’t all that close to each other. We’d break out into fights over who’s smarter, or who should lead projects, or who should’ve caught certain errors. Yet… when your dad came around…”
Rev let out a faint whine.
“…you still begged me for help. You cared more about getting his approval,” Tech glanced at the notes again, “about not being a failure… than you cared about being better than me.”
“You-” his voice wavered. “You should just leave.”
“Rev.” Tech tried to place a reassuring hand on his shoulder, but Rev shrugged it off. “Look, if there’s anything you wanna talk about, I’m still your best friend, alright?”
“I’m fine,” he croaked.
Tech reached out again. “It’s just… I care about you, Rev… just like how you care about me. If you need anything, I’m here. Don’t be embarrassed to ask.”
When Tech’s fingers brushed Rev’s shoulder again, he let out a gasping sob.
“Rev…”
“This is pathetic! You told me not to cry and- ARGH!” He slammed his fists into the mattress. “I can’t even do that!” Wiping his eyes, he let out a broken sigh. “I tried so hard… at everything… and yet… I’m still a…”
“Rev.” Tech gently rubbed his shoulder in what he hoped was a soothing fashion. “You didn’t fail at anything, and you aren’t and can’t be a failure, okay?” He sighed. “And I never even told you not to cry. I said I didn’t want you to feel like crying whenever I corrected you on something… because something that small shouldn’t make you so upset.” His hand traveled to Rev’s back, moving gently up and down. “And I’m assuming the reason you’re crying… isn’t related to that. It’s something more… personal.”
“I don’t want to talk about it,” Rev muttered, still wiping away tears.
“There’s nothing wrong with wanting a little support.”
"I don't need support."
"You can talk to me, Rev."
"No."
"I won't judge. I promise."
“Stop!”
Tech flinched back, noticing the sharp anger and fear in Rev’s eyes. If Rev ever planned on explaining things, Tech figured that it certainly wouldn’t be any time tonight.
“Sorry,” he said, placing both hands on his lap. “I shouldn’t have pried.”
“It’s… You’re just trying to help me… even if I don’t need any help.”
Tech strongly disagreed, but he didn’t want to argue. Besides, it was really late. Now probably wasn’t the best time to be having any sort of personal discussion anyway.
He yawned, then looked around at the state of Rev’s room again.
“How about we hang out in the lounge for a little while? It’s a bit more… cheery than it is in here.”
Rev sniffed. “I guess…”
“We can just take a moment to relax before going to bed, alright?”
With a shuddered breath, Rev nodded. “Okay.”
Tech got up, frowning at the notes he was still holding before slipping them into a pocket on his shorts. It was then that he noticed the state of his shirt.
Behind him, he could hear Rev slowly pulling himself off the bed.
“Hey, I’m going to stop by my room to change into my pajamas. You can take a minute to cool off and meet me at the end of the sleeping quarters when you’re ready, alright?”
“Alright…”
It felt strange to leave Rev alone, but the smell of ketchup and the cool air penetrating his torn shirt were starting to bother him. He had to trust that Rev would listen to him and not do something rash like lock himself away.
“See you in a minute.”
And with that, he made his way back into the hall.
~
Tech sighed, looking down the hall toward Rev’s room. It had been a few minutes, and he was starting to worry that Rev might have decided not to show.
Then, giving him some relief, Rev finally emerged from his room and walked over.
“Hey Rev,” Tech greeted softly.
“Hey Tech,” Rev wearily greeted back.
After a brief moment of silence, Tech simply said, “let’s go.”
They walked down the halls, not a word being spoken between them. It wasn’t quiet, however, as they could hear the TV around the corner.
Sure enough, the flash of the TV screen at the other end of the moonlit hall became visible at the same time that the rest of the lounge did.
“Guess nobody decided to turn off the TV,” Tech said. “I’ll handle that once we’re ready to go to bed.”
Tech took the far corner of the couch opposite the TV. On the coffee table, he could see the burnt bulb from earlier and the TV remote, the latter of which he grabbed.
As Rev slowly sat down on the middle cushion beside Tech, he noticed that the back of the remote was lying on the table at about the same time that Tech did.
“Hm. I guess this is the remote Duck wanted the batteries for.”
“They’re probably done charging by now so I could run over and grab them if you like. Alternatively, I could also get up and change the channel myself.”
“Well, we should probably check what’s on first.”
They both looked at the TV, seeing zoomed-in footage of a sleeping tiger before a cut shot to a confused zookeeper being interviewed by a reporter.
“I don’t know, I can’t explain that either. One second I was looking away, and then poof, the tiger is back the next.”
“Any theories or opinions on what might have happened?”
“I have no ideas. I’m just happy she’s back, and I hope she doesn’t disappear like that again…”
“And there you have it folks. It seems like this mystery may remain a mystery for quite some time. But, at the very least, we got a happy ending out of it. This is Channel 4 News, and this conveniently concludes our conservation special.”
Tech sighed, wiping a hand down his face. “I feel like Duck shouldn’t have gotten away with that so easily…”
“I don’t even understand how he managed to pull it off in the first place. Maybe I’m just too tired to think up a list of possible scenarios…”
“Just don’t bother. Kick back and relax; That’s what we came here for.”
“Oh, um, yeah. Alright.”
Rev leaned back on the couch, kicking his feet up onto the coffee table. Something was brushing up against his foot, so he craned his neck to see what it was.
Turned out, it was a lightbulb. Likely the same one he had given Tech a little earlier.
“Say… did you figure out the whole electricity thing?”
Tech’s ears drooped, as well as the rest of his posture. “Well… no… You had a great suggestion… but maybe I should just throw in the towel. Surely I would have managed to produce some sort of power by now if I was capable of it… but I guess I’m just not…”
“That’s not true! I saw you getting that lightbulb to glow at least twice today, and the second time even caused it to blow out!”
“It… Huh…” His brow scrunched in thought. “I think I can recall when the bulb blew… but you saw it glow before then?”
“Yeah! Right after I flew into you and-” Rev faltered, pulling his legs off the table as his face heated up. “You know, we were talking, and it glowed after I mentioned dancing with you…”
“Ah, um…” Tech’s cheeks were suddenly showing a hint of red as well. “Really? That’s… interesting.” Clearing his throat, he looked away. “I’ll have to compare what those two experiences have in common, and maybe that’ll bring me closer to achieving my goal.”
The TV filled the air with sponsored praises for some random product they’d never use. Despite this, it played out completely before either of them spoke another word.
“I’m sure you’ll figure it out,” Rev said, voice assured but weary. “You’re the smartest person in the universe after all.”
Tech’s attention slowly turned to him, then down to his hand casually resting on the space between them.
“Thanks… it does mean a lot to know you at least think I can pull it off.”
The light brush of something against his hand briefly jolted Rev’s mind away from the fog of sleep he was sinking into. He looked for an explanation and found that Tech had ‘casually’ left his hand, palm up, right next to his own. Of course, when Rev searched for Tech’s face, he was looking away again.
Surely, Rev thought, that this was an invitation to hold his hand… right? It was right there. It was like Tech was nudging him to just take hold.
Though… at the moment… he didn’t really feel like he deserved it.
Rev looked at Tech again, noticing his stiff posture and the barest hint at a hopeful smile.
…Maybe Rev didn’t exactly feel like he deserved to hold his hand, but Tech definitely deserved to have his hand held.
“I know you can do it, Tech. You just have to keep trying.”
After a bit of hesitation, he gingerly laid his hand on top of Tech’s.
A delighted squeak filled the air, followed by a deeper, more manly cough.
“I will… Uh, ‘keep trying,’ I mean.”
Their fingers entwined, and Rev felt like the air was charged with emotion… or maybe he was just getting really tired.
It took a second longer than it should have for Rev to remember that Tech had said something.
“That’s good- great!”
Tech chuckled, his posture loosening as he sat back on the couch.
“Let’s just relax alright?” He yawned. “We can worry about whatever some other time. When we're more awake.”
“Yeah… That’s probably a good idea…”
Following his lead, Rev let himself kick back, feet up on the coffee table and back against the cushion. He would have started watching TV, but Tech was still occupying the last part of his mind that hadn’t drifted off.
Though he’d blame the sleep taking over, Rev decided that Tech’s shoulder seemed like the perfect place to rest his head. As it turned out, he was completely right.
The soft weight against his side didn’t go unnoticed. Tech felt warmth swirling in his chest as he carefully looked down to see Rev sleeping peacefully.
He didn’t intend for either of them to actually sleep out in the lounge, but he wasn’t about to complain to Rev about it.
Letting out another yawn, Tech faintly questioned if he should carry Rev back to his room. Considering that his bed was littered with sticky notes, it didn’t seem like the best idea; He’d have to either wake Rev up or leave him on an uncomfortable bed.
The room seemed to be getting darker, then Tech realized he was just closing his eyes.
Somewhere in his head, he might’ve had reservations about letting himself fall asleep there, especially with Rev unwittingly falling asleep against him… But wherever those reservations were, they weren’t strong enough to push through the fog.
Another sponsor played, something about apple juice, and Tech grabbed the remote to shut it off. It wasn’t until he was pointing it at the TV that he remembered it didn’t have batteries.
A twinge of annoyance hit him. If only he had figured out the whole electricity thing already. Even if Rev knew he could do it, Tech still wasn’t sure what could trigger that power.
Wait…
Tech smiled tiredly, wanting to laugh but not having the energy.
Looking back, it was entirely too obvious to him what he was missing after sitting in his lab, failure after failure getting him down… and then gained when the person he cared for the most promised to share quality time with him once he succeeded.
He let his lowermost fingers slide down the remote, slipping into the battery slot. The angle was awkward, but that didn’t matter. With his thumb he held down the power button, and did what Rev knew he could.
And now, he knew he could too.
“Thank you,” he whispered to Rev, before the soft blanket of darkness swept over the room and invited him to join his friend in sleep.
~
Before Lexi had opened her bedroom door, it seemed like a regular morning. She had done her normal routine and was ready to bound over to the kitchen to get coffee started for the less morning-inclined teammates… when something sounded slightly off.
The sun was barely up, so everyone else was likely in their room catching ‘Z’s, but she could hear two people breathing somewhere in HQ. Curious, she stepped down the hall.
Her mind filled with questions of who it could be. Duck, Slam, and Tech were the first to be eliminated, as Duck could sleep through an earthquake, Slam would need one to wake him up, and Tech would probably yell at it for disturbing him before he could get some coffee. Ace was much more likely to be up this early, but given how badly he said his back ached after hitting the basement wall yesterday, Lexi bet he’d take a bit longer to get up than usual.
Rev… was in the ‘definitely’ category on the ‘people who would be up right now’ list. It probably wasn’t great that this was the case, but Lexi couldn’t blame him for getting frustrated after the fourth or fifth time hitting the floor while trying to sleep. But, if he was up, then she should be able to smell coffee by now, as he’d normally get it brewing if she hadn’t already.
Lexi listened in again, and noticed that the two people she heard had very relaxed heartbeats… and their breathing was pretty relaxed too. They were both definitely asleep, explaining the lack of coffee scent despite multiple people being out of their rooms.
Now she was really curious. As far as she knew, nobody in HQ was particularly fond of sleeping anywhere but inside their custom-tailored rooms, so there must be an interesting story attached to whoever she finds napping out… in the lounge, she was now sure of. It wasn’t far off, so this wouldn’t stay a mystery for very long.
She stepped around the corner and…
…slapped her hands over her mouth so she wouldn’t squeal at the adorable sight.
Tucked into the center couch, Rev was laying on top of Tech, beak nuzzled against his shoulder. Tech, meanwhile, had his arms wrapped snugly around Rev’s back, keeping him locked firmly in his embrace. Both of them wore peaceful expressions in their sleep, really selling the cozy atmosphere.
At that moment, Lexi questioned if she wanted to wait a bit before starting the coffee. Both of them seemed to be so comfortable, and she didn’t want anything to wake them up.
Still, if Ace got up with a sore back and didn’t have coffee ready, he probably wouldn’t feel too great about it.
Quietly, Lexi stepped away. The two of them could enjoy their moment of peace for now… but she was definitely teasing Rev about this later.

Hoot once again!
I‘m really glad to hear this. Our little ritual means a lot to me <3
I am so sorry for her, but very glad that she figured it out now. Growing up undiagnosed can be (and is most of the time) very traumatic
While I’m a bit younger, I still spent my entire childhood and half of my youth (I’m gonna pretend it has been only half of it so far cause whatever the fuck I had/have is most definitely not a joyful youth). So while I can‘t fully relate, I still kind of get it and can at least imagine how it must me for her
It‘s pretty hard to get an autism diagnosis, because it cannot be done by a regular psychiatrist (unlike ADHD for example, which is why I at least have that diagnosis already). In my area there is only one place where you can get a diagnosis and the waiting list is LONG (not the worst I‘ve seen so far but at least half a year, which is terrible if you need to get help as quickly as possible but you need a diagnosis to get any kind of help). But I’m working on it
Thank youuuu
I planned chapter 2 out yesterday
It ended up to be “only” 5 pages, but it has 39 panels (chapter 1 has 24 panels)
So I think I’ll still get more of the story across even though it seems to be one page shorter
I will most likely start working on it in November
Your day sounds pretty nice!
Today, I was really stressed and worried about something and I did it okay-ish, but I can‘t change shit anymore now anyways so I’ll have to stop worrying and just wait and see
I also had a doctors appointment to get blood drawn and tested (cause due to the meds I take I’m apparently at a higher risk of malnutrition/lack of some stuff) and it was literally the most pleasant doctors appointment I’ve ever had.
I was a too early (as always) and had to wait outside a bit because they were still on lunch break but I was let inside a few minutes earlier anyways and so I was alone in the waiting area. And the nurse was incredibly kind and nice (she had me lay down for it because she didn’t want to risk that I could pass out and then she let me take my time to get back up again). It was overall incredibly nice and I was done not even 15 minutes after my appointment (so none of that annoying waiting time that usually comes with doctors appointments)
I also wanted to mention this in the past days already but I somehow didn‘t haha:
So I saw Someone do OC-tober and I absolutely LOVED the idea! (I’m one of these people that just never really draws their OCs lmao)
So I put together a prompt list for myself and I’m really excited about it ^^
(I‘m also planning on participating in Ghosttober with my writing which is why I’m probably going to be a little stressed all throughout October which is why I’ll most likely start working on chapter 2 in November)
I once again truly hope that you had a pleasant day! ♥️
~ @owlishanon
I like our little ritual too! ♥ When my friend got her diagnosis she couldn't get it from a regular psychiatrist either. She also got her ADHD diagnosis a couple years earlier because that was much easier. Autism she had to take a handful of tests over a period of time to actually get the diagnosis. But she was 98% sure what it would be before she got it. So I guess it's a pain in the ass no matter where you try to get it. Hoping that you are able to get through that process soon and get the help that you need. I'm glad your doctor's appointment went well and was easy. That's such a rare thing. And that you had a nurse who was really accommodating and understood what you needed. I was wondering why you said you would work on chapter two in November, until I got to the end of your ask. There are A LOT of things going on in October. And it will be kind of nice to take a pause on working so hard on that and doing some other stuff. I'm really excited for kinktober/ghostober whatever we're calling it. I'm trying to get the first week written and ready this week so that it's less likely that I fall behind. We'll see how that goes. Day one is written and ready to go--so that's something at least. And OC-tober sounds SO cool. I'm excited to see what you end up doing with that. I'm sure that will be a lot of fun too!

17.   “There’s one in every family, two in mine actually, and they always manage to ruin special occasions.”
18.   “Your son is awake.”
19.   “Before sunrise, he’s your son.”
20.   “Everything the light touches is our kingdom.”
21.   “A king’s time as rule rises and falls like the sun. One day, the sun will set on my time here and will rise with you as the new king.”
22.   “What about that shadowy place?”
23.   “That’s beyond our borders. You must never go there.”
24.   “I thought a king can do whatever he wants.”
25.   “There’s more to being a king than getting your way all the time.”
26.   “Everything you see exists together in a delicate balance. As king, you need to understand that balance and respect all the creatures.”
27.   “We are all connected in the great circle of life.”
28.   “Let an old pro show you how it’s done.”
29.   “Young master, one day you will be king.”
30.   “I despise guessing games.”
31.   “My dad just showed me the whole kingdom. And I’m gonna rule it all.”
32.   “Forgive me for not leaping for joy. Bad back, you know.”
33.   “When I’m king, what’ll that make you?”
34.   “You’re so weird.”
35.   “So, your father showed you the whole kingdom, did he?”
36.   “He didn’t show you what’s beyond the rise at the northern border.”
37.   “It’s far too dangerous. Only the bravest go there.”
38.   “I’m only looking out for the well-being of my favorite nephew.”
39.   “All the more reason for me to be protective.”
40.   “Oh, dear, I’ve said too much. Well, I suppose you’d have found out sooner or later, you being so clever and all.”
41.   “Just do me one favor. Promise me you’ll never go there.”
42.   “Remember. It’s our little secret.”
43.   “Come on. I just heard about this great place.”
44.   “Where are we going? It better not be anyplace dumb.”
45.   “How are we gonna ditch the dodo?”
46.   “Just look at you two, little seeds of romance blossoming in the savannah.”
47.   “Your parents will be thrilled, what with you being betrothed and all.”
48.   “One day you two are going to get married.”
49.   “I can’t marry her. She’s my best friend.”
50.   “It’s a tradition going back generations.”
51.   “When I’m king, that’ll be the first thing to go.”
52.   “Nice try, but only the king can do that.”
53.   “Well, he’s the future king.”
54.   “With an attitude like that, I’m afraid you’re shaping up to be a pretty pathetic king indeed.”
55.   “Hey, genius, it was my idea.”
56.   “Ha! Pinned ya!”
57.   “I wonder if it’s brains are still in there.”
58.   “The only checking out you will do will be to check out of here.”
59.   “Right now, we are all in very real danger.”
60.   “Danger? Ha! I walk on the wild side. I laugh in the face of danger.”
61.   “Do you know what we do to kings who step out of their kingdom?”
62.   “Ix-nay on the upid-stay.”
63.   “Hey! Why don’t you pick on somebody your own size?”
64.   “That was it? Do it again. Come on.”
65.   “You deliberately disobeyed me.”
66.   “I though you were very brave.”
67.   “I’ve got to teach my son a lesson.”
68.   “You could’ve been killed.”
69.   “I was just trying to be brave like you.”
70.   “I’m only brave when I have to be.”
71.   “Being brave doesn’t mean you go looking for trouble.”
72.   “I guess even kings get scared, huh?”
73.   “We’re pals, right? And we’ll always be together, right?”
74.   “Let me tell you something that my father told me.”
75.   “Look up at the starts. The Great Kings of the Past look down on us from those stars.”
76.   “Whenever you feel alone, just remember that those kings will always be there to guide you. And so will I.”
77.   “Look at you guys! No wonder we’re dangling at the bottom of the food chain.”
78.   “We were afraid it was somebody important.”
79.   “Now that’s power.”
80.   “I just hear that name and I shudder.”
81.   “I’m surrounded by idiots.”
82.   “You’re one of us. I mean, you’re our pal.”
83.   “I like that. He’s not king, but he’s still so proper.”
84.   “I don’t think you really deserve this.”
85.   “What were we supposed to do? Kill him?”
86.   “Now, you wait here. Your father has a marvelous surprise for you.”
87.   “If I told you, it wouldn’t be a surprise, now would it?”
88.   “If you tell me, I’ll still act surprised!”
89.   “Lucky daddy was there to save you, eh?”
90.   “Just between us, you might want to work on that little roar of yours.”
91.   “This is awful! What’ll we do!?”
92.   “Long live the king.”
93.   “Coem on. You gotta get up. We gotta go home.”
94.   “No one ever means for these things to happen.”
95.   “The king is dead and if it weren’t for you, he’d still be alive.”
96.   “Run. Run away and never return.”
97.   “He’s as good as dead out there anyway. And if he does come back, we’ll kill him.”
98.   “You hear that? If you ever come back, we’ll kill ya.”
99.   “For me it is a deep personal loss.”
100. “It is with a heavy heart that I assume the throne.”
101. “Out of the action of this tragedy, we shall rise to greet the dawning of a new era.”
102. “You better come look. I think it’s still alive.”
103. “Look at him, he’s so cute and all alone. Can we keep him?”
104. “Maybe he’ll be on our side.”
105.  “Ha! That’s the stupidest thing I ever heard!”
106.  “Who’s the brains of this outfit?”
107.  “I’m fried. Let’s get out of here and find some shade.”
108.  “Ah, you’re an outcast. Great! So are we!”
109.  “In times like this my buddy here says you gotta put your behind in your past.”
110. “Lie down before you hurt yourself.”
111. “You gotta put your past behind you.”
112. “Bad things happen and you can’t do anything about it, right?”
113. “When the world turns its back on you, you turn your back on the world.”
114. “That’s not what I was taught.”
115. “Maybe you need a new lesson. Repeat after me. Hakuna Matata.”
116. “It’s our motto.”
117. “These two words will solve all your problems.”
118. “Welcome to our humble abode.”
119. “We live wherever we want.”
120.  “Home is where your rump rests.”
121.  “I’m so hungry I could eat a whole zebra.”
122.  “If you live with us, you have to eat like us.”
123.  “Slimy yet satisfying.”
124.  “I’m telling ya, kid, this is the great life. No rules, no responsibilities, and best of all, no worries.”
125.  “Do lighten up. Sing something with a little bounce in it.”
126.  “You know the law. Never, ever mention that name in my presence.”
127.  “Yes, sire, you are the king. I only mentioned it to illustrate the differences in your royal managerial approaches.”
128.  “Hey, boss! We got a bone to pick with you!”
129.  “I ate like a pig.”
130.  “Ever wonder what those sparkling dots are up there?”
131.  “With you, everything’s gas.”
132.  “Somebody once told me that the great kings of the past are up there, watching over us.”
133. “You mean a bunch of royal dead guys are watching us?”
134. “What mook made that up?”
135. “It is time.”
136. “She’s gonna eat me!”
137. “Get her! Bite her head! Go for the jugular!”
138. “What do you mean what am I doing here? What are you doing here?”
139. “Wait ‘til everyone finds out you’ve been here all this time.”
140. “She doesn’t have to know. Nobody has to know.”
141. “You’re alive. And that means you’re the king.”
142. “It’s not gravel, it’s grovel. And don’t. He’s not the king.”
143. “I’m not the king. Maybe I was gonna be, but that was a long time ago.”
144. “Let me get this straight. You’re the king? And you never told us?”
145. “Whatever she has to say, she can say in front of us.”
146. “You think you know a guy.”
147.  “It’s like you’re back from the dead.”
148. “You don’t know how much this will mean to everyone. What it means to me.”
149.  “I’ve really missed you.”
150. “I don’t understand something. You’ve been alive all this time. Why didn’t you come back?”
151. “I just needed to get out on my own. Live my own life.”
152. “No one needs me.”
153. “We’ve been through this. I’m not the king.”
154. “Sometimes bad things happen and there’s nothing you can do about it. So why worry?”
155. “I left to find help. And I found you.”
156. “Don’t you understand? You’re our only hope.”
157. “You know, you’re starting to sound like my father.”
158. “You think you can just show up and tell me how to live my life? You don’t even know what I’ve been through!”
159. “I can’t go back. What would it prove anyways?”
160. “It won’t change anything. You can’t change the past.”
161. “You said you’d always been there for me, but you’re not. And it’s because of me. It’s my fault.”
162. “The question is who are you.”
163. “Well, I know who you are.”
164. “I think you’re a little confused.”
165. “I’m not the one who’s confused. You don’t even know who you are.”
166. “I hate to tell you this, but he died a long time ago.”
167. “He lives in you.”
168. “You have forgotten me.”
169.  “You are more than what you have become.”
170.  “You must take your place in the circle of life.”
171.  “How can I go back? I’m not who I used to be.”
172.  “Remember who you are.”
173.  “Looks like the winds are changing.”
174.  “Change is good.”
175.  “It’s not easy. I know what I have to do, but going back means I’ll have to face my past. I’ve been running from it for so long.”
176.   “The past can hurt you, but the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it.”
177.   “The king has returned.”
178.   “I can’t believe it! He’s gone back!”
179.    “It’s awful, isn’t it?”
180.    “I didn’t want to believe you.”
181.    “What made you come back?”
182.    “I finally got some sense knocked into me and I’ve got the bump to prove it.”
183.    “This is my kingdom. If I don’t fight for it, who will?”
184.    “I see nothing funny about this.”
185.    “If it’s important to you, we’re with you to the end.”
186.    “What do you want me to do, dress in drag and do the hula?”
187.     “Where is your hunting party? They’re not doing their job.”
188.     “You have sentenced us to death!”
189.     “I am the king! I can do whatever I want!”
190.     “I’m ten times the king he was.”
191.     “You’re alive? How can that be?”
192.     “Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t rip you apart.”
193.     “You see them? They think I’m king.”
194.     “The choice is yours. Either step down or fight.”
195.     “Must this all end in violence?”
196.     “I’d hate to be responsible for the death of a family member. Wouldn’t you agree?”
197.     “That’s not gonna work. I’ve put it behind me.”
198.     “What about your faithful subjects? Have they put it behind them?”
199.     “So you haven’t told them your little secret. Well, now’s your chance.”
200.     “It’s not true. Tell me it’s not true.”
201.     “If it wasn’t for you, he’d still be alive. It’s your fault he’s dead. Do you deny it?”
202.     “You’re in trouble again, but this time daddy isn’t here to save you.”
203.     “Please. Please have mercy. I beg you.”
204.     “You don’t deserve to live.”
205.     “Why should I believe you? Everything you ever told me was a lie.”
206.     “Friends? I thought he said we were the enemy.”

grt3D episode 14: vexed by hexagon
Tumblr media
there was a knock on the homeslices’ door.
“...hello?” star opened it slowly, tiredly, to see square standing before him, holding a pair of wings in one hand.
“hey… can i stay here?” square asked. “i’m the only one in my cabin now… and it’s pretty lonely…”
star smiled. “sure thing, bro.”
square followed him into the cabin and sat down on one of the empty beds, putting the wings on the floor beside him. heptagon was sound asleep.
“so…” star said in a hushed voice. “you’re back in the game too?”
“i suppose i am,” square replied.
“good for you!”
“...winning this show was my dream. i just forgot that.”
“we’ve all forgotten a lot of things here…”
“but we’ve learned a lot more.”
“that’s true.”
“hey, what’s that?” square noticed a little gray box sitting behind star.
“oh, this?” star picked it up and held it. “it’s this remote oval told me to keep safe. rhombus used it to get rid of people’s arms and legs.”
“oh yeah, that thing.”
“not sure what i’m gonna do with it. maybe i’ll use it in the challenge today?”
“today? is it morning already?”
“i dunno. whatever. but i’ll use this sucker on you faster than you can say ‘that’s cheating, you dimwit!’”
square smirked. “is it cheating?”
“you’re the square, you tell me.”
the two chuckled. heptagon rolled over.
“shut up, star!” square exclaimed between clenched teeth, holding back another laugh. “you’ll wake him up!”
“quiet contest?”
“in 3… 2… 1…”
bzzzt! star clicked the remote’s button.
“hey!” square cried, limbless. “...oops.”
heptagon opened his eyes wearily and glanced at square. “...hi.”
“hi.”
“...goodnight.”
and with that heptagon went back to sleep.
“geez, star, can i have my limbs back?”
meanwhile, hexagon and octagon were up talking like usual.
“then i said, ‘he’s totally into you! and even if he isn’t, hanging out won’t hurt anything!’” hexagon smiled. “and guess what happened next.”
“what?” octagon smiled back.
“the two of them started dating! my best friend became the first kid in school to ever get a boyfriend – and, hey, i think they’re getting married in a few months?”
“wow! you’re quite the matchmaker, huh?”
“i guess you can say that. i just notice things in people.”
“you certainly do.”
“speaking of which, i’m glad i could help square get his dream back on its feet. ive hated to see him so down about it lately.”
“yeah… but hey, don’t you think it’s a bit risky to help him?”
“...what do you mean?”
octagon chewed her pacifier pensively. “well… he’s more competition.”
“i suppose you’re right.” hexagon shrugged. “and yeah, i am thinking about winning, but i want it to be a fair fight, y’know?”
“that makes sense.”
“we are coming around towards the finals, aren’t we…”
the two remained silent for a few seconds.
“...so who else did you pair up?” octagon asked.
“only a few others – not including myself, surprisingly enough. still earned myself the superlative ‘most romantic’ in our high school yearbook, though.”
“you’ve never dated anyone???”
“nope,” hexagon replied, smiling sheepishly. “why are you so surprised?”
“cuz, well…” octagon blushed. “cuz you’re so cool…”
hexagon elbowed her affectionately. “hey, i never said nobody’s had a crush on me before!”
octagon chuckled, a silly grin on her face. “oh, really…”
“you can do this,” origin muttered to himself as he translated back and forth in the field. “you can do this. you can do this. you can do this.”
“WHO CAN DO WHAT?” a voice asked.
origin jolted back. “m-möbius strip! sir! i didn’t see you there!”
“GOOD MORNING, TWINKLE. READY TO WAKE EVERYONE UP?”
“...in a second. sir… what took you so long in getting back here? you were gone for days.”
“WELL… i thought i might as well seize the opportunity to get some work done. you know how it is.” möbius’s voice had lowered.
origin sighed. “advertisements?”
“yup!”
“i should’ve known…”
“what? i’m an opportunistic sort!”
origin still wasn’t satisfied. “why would any of them want to come here anyway? it’s not like any of these guys would want to go to the 1st dimension.”
möbius chuckled cryptically, but said nothing.
“...i guess i’ll go wake everyone up, sir.” origin’s voice was bitter and tired.
in a couple of minutes, star, hexagon, octagon, heptagon, and square arrived, origin trailing behind them. hexagon and octagon were still chatting, but every so often hexagon would glance over at square.
square had a determined yet pensive look. heptagon was crossing his fingers.
“HELLO AND GOOD MORNING, IDIOTS!” möbius greeted. “TODAY, HEPTAGON AND SQUARE ARE UP FOR ELIMINATION BECAUSE THEY’RE THE BIGGEST IDIOTS OUT OF ALL OF YOU.”
star tapped his foot nervously.
“SOOOO… THE ELIMINATED CONTESTANT IS SQUA–”
“HEPTAGON!” origin blurted. “the eliminated contestant is heptagon!”
heptagon’s face brightened.
“WHAT????”
“you heard me!!!” origin yelled uneasily, starting to buzz.
heptagon chuckled happily, tears in his eyes. star squeezed his hand as he started to drift towards origin.
square smiled. “so long.”
“HEY!!!!” möbius screamed. “TWINKY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING????”
but origin and heptagon left to the paradox without another word.
“I SWEAR TO THE PRIMES, I’M GONNA KILL THAT GUY!!!! well, he can’t die, but whatever. I’M GONNA KILL HIM!!!!!!!!!!!”
in a moment origin returned. “sir, let’s begin the next challenge.” his voice was shaky, but confident.
“WHY YOU… GET OUT OF HERE! GO BACK TO THE PARADOX, YOU JERK!!!!”
origin said nothing. he vanished again.
möbius translated towards square. “i will eliminate you,” he whispered.
square held fast. “you won’t.”
möbius raised his voice. “TODAY IS THE SEMIFINAL, MEANING ONLY THE WINNER OF THE CHALLENGE HAS A CONFIRMED SPOT IN THE FINAL! THE LOSERS WILL ALL BE UP FOR ELIMINATION.”
“shoot.” hexagon bit her lip. this is gonna hurt a lot more than i thought…
“...but what’s the challenge?” star asked.
“A GO-KART RACE!” möbius announced. “IF I KEPT THE TRAITOROUS TWINKLE AROUND, HE WOULD GENERATE SOME GO-KARTS FOR YOU. BUT SINCE HE’S TRAIPSING AROUND IN THE PARADOX YOU’LL HAVE TO MAKE YOUR KARTS YOURSELVES. YOU HAVE HALF AN HOUR UNTIL THE RACE STARTS… SO GET BUILDING!”
the four remaining shapes bolted towards the forest to get materials.
square started yanking branches off of a tree, and dragged them towards his new cabin. he ran inside and grabbed droplet’s old wooden wings.
star did the same, but tried to look for thinner, lighter branches to use.
hexagon and octagon went about the search for branches together.
“hey hexy,” octagon piped up, “what are you planning? i’m gonna try to make my kart as aerodynamic as possible…”
hexagon’s mind was elsewhere. she didn’t respond.
“hello? hexagon?”
“huh?” hexagon blinked. “oh, sorry… hey, octagon?”
“yeah?”
“let’s just keep in mind that… you want to win. i want to win.”
“...yeah, we want to win.”
“that’s not what i said…”
“anyway, hexy, i was thinking we could collaborate on the kart design! we’re both smart, after all. then we’d both do really well!”
hexagon smiled uneasily. “...okay, octagon.”
meanwhile, square had begun to fit together the branches into a rectangle shape with a triangle at the front; he then slotted the wings into the back.
“all this needs is wheels and i’ll be golden,” he said to himself. “now how will i make these branches into circles?”
an idea popped into his head, and he ran back to the forest to meet star.
“so square’s made the comeback,” star said, grinning.
“indeed i have,” square replied. “say, can i borrow two of your thin branches?”
“what? and help my rival?”
square smirked.
“of course!” star handed them to him and waved him goodbye.
star continued to make his go-kart. he was never the best at building things, but he tried to follow the advice of his internal droplet and rhombus.
“be bold!" he told himself. “but not too bold! something unique… but possible. aha!”
he began to bend one of his branches into an arc, and affixed the end to another branch. he then grabbed the grapher…
square had finished his kart. “hey möbius!” he called. “where’s the starting line?”
“WOULDN’T YOU LIKE TO KNOW, WEATHER BOY? …RIGHT BESIDE ME, YOU LITTLE TWIT.”
square rolled his eyes and started to roll his go-kart over to him. as he did so, he passed octagon and hexagon. their karts looked identical; smooth and aerodynamic.
“hey, hexagon!” he called. but she didn’t reply.
soon enough, all four shapes were done with their karts, and had rolled them beside möbius strip.
“OKAY, FOLKS! THIS RACE WILL HAVE THREE LAPS, FROM HERE TO THE FOREST AND BACK. FIRST ONE TO FINISH WINS A SPOT IN THE FINALS!”
hexagon knitted her brow.
"ON YOUR MARKS… GET SET… GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
and they were off! hexagon and octagon took an easy lead; collaboration really did make for a good design.
star was a little ways behind them, while square was in last place.
square grumbled.
“what, you thought i’d go easy on you?” star smirked.
“of course not,” square replied. “i’m just going easy on you.”
“oh yeah?”
“oh yeah!”
hexagon and octagon neared the forest and turned around, halfway through their first lap.
“the finals!” octagon exclaimed. “i cannot wait! y’know, helvetica’s gonna pull through for sure. best friends forever and whatnot.”
“mhm.”
“hey, i wish origin were here to broadcast this. imagine the look on trapezoid and pentagon’s face when they see us win!”
hexagon said nothing.
by pulling a lever, square flapped the wings on his kart, overtaking star just as hexagon and octagon completed their first lap.
“darn!” star exclaimed. “guess i’ll have to use this…” he had mounted the grapher on the front of his crescent-shaped kart and readied his finger to press it.
square completed his first lap, star on his tail. he glanced back and swerved out of the way just before the grapher’s blast could hit him. “hoo boy! so you really are using it, huh!”
“well, you’re using the wings! i’d say it’s pretty even.”
“sounds odd to me!”
star continued to try and shoot square with a beam from the grapher, which would make his limbs disappear and thus incapacitate him, but he had no luck. square just kept on dodging!
so star put the pedal to the metal and sped ahead of square, before turning his go-kart around to face him. driving backwards, star continued to blast at his rival’s kart. the two continued this little tango, spinning around in circles and not getting anywhere.
while those two were occupied, hexagon and octagon completed their second lap.
“almost there…” hexagon murmured.
“hey!” square cried. “those two are almost at the finish line!”
star jolted. “i gotta get ‘em!” he turned his kart to aim the grapher towards them.
“i just can’t wait!” octagon exclaimed. “we’re gonna tie, and we’ll both get into the finals! …right, hexy?”
“there can’t be a tie!” hexagon snapped back.
“what?”
suddenly octagon got hit by a flash of light, and her limbs disappeared.
“AAAAH!” she screamed, her kart skidding to a stop.
hexagon stopped for a moment, her eyes wide. she stared at her best friend forever.
“HEXY! HELP ME! HELP ME, PLEASE!”
hexagon put her foot on the gas. “i’m sorry, octy.”
“HEXY!!!”
hexagon sped ahead, nearing the finish line, as octagon sat motionless. star swerved past octagon’s kart, button-mashing the grapher.
“just get hexagon already!” square cried.
“i’m trying!!!” star cried back.
but they were too late. hexagon crossed the finish line.
“AND HEXAGON WINS A SPOT IN THE FINALS!!!!” möbius announced.
star and square stopped their karts and got out. star pulled the grapher off of his kart and aimed it at octagon, whose arms and legs returned.
“octagon, i’m sorry…” he said softly.
octagon didn’t reply. she didn’t care about him. she walked past him, past the finish line, towards hexagon’s stopped kart. the one she helped her build. the one that left her behind.
hexagon was standing beside it, facing away.
“hexagon,” octagon’s voice trembled.
her best friend forever said nothing.
“hexagon. you left me there. you heard me calling for your help but you left me there. i thought we were in this together.”
her best friend said nothing.
“together we got so far. you got so far. we could’ve tied and got into the finals together. but the moment you had the chance to win…” octagon spat out her pacifier in disgust. “you threw me under the bus! hexagon! was that what all of this was for?”
her friend said nothing.
“you… you were playing the long-con, weren’t you?” octagon’s voice cracked, tears welling up in her eyes. “you only became friends with me just to use me! you saw i was smart, that i was rational, so you used me as a tool to win! but i wasn’t smart at all. i was too dumb to tell that you were never my friend to begin with!”
“no!” hexagon finally cried, spinning around to face octagon. her voice was timorous with emotion. “that’s not true, octagon… i love you…”
“then why did you do this? why?”
“...because i’ve always wanted to win, octagon! just as much as everyone here, i want to win!” her voice lowered to a whisper. “i want to win…”
“...hexagon.”
“i’m sorry…”
octagon stepped back. “i hope you’re happy. I HOPE YOU’RE HAPPY!” she burst into tears and ran off.
hexagon fell onto her knees.
“WELL GOLLY GEE!” möbius interjected. “NOW I’M SORRY I TOLD TWINKY-DINK TO SKEDADDLE, CUZ THAT WAS JUICY! SQUARE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ELIMINATED AFTER ALL.”
“shut up,” square muttered. “c’mon, star. let’s go.” he unfastened the wings from his kart.
star took the grapher uneasily from his own and went along with square. “i don’t want to hold onto this anymore.”
square looked into his eyes. “you want me to?”
star blinked.
now hexagon was alone with möbius strip.
“just as i expected,” he murmured. “no friendship can last so long as you’re competing for something… silly to even try with her.”
“don’t eliminate octagon.”
“i will. i will eliminate her. but don’t bother trying to tell her… i’m sure that won’t make her any happier with you.”
“i hate you.”
“then you hate yourself, darling. you are going to win.”
“heptagon!” parallelogram called. “buddy!”
heptagon’s old teammates, yim yum, gathered around him as he arrived in the paradox: parallelogram, kite, and oval.
“you did it!” kite cheered. “you finally lost!”
“are you okay?” oval asked.
heptagon took a moment. “yes,” he said at length, with mild unease. “yes, i think i am.”
heart rushed over to him. “a-and, um, the challenge will be ending in only a couple of days. then we can go home.”
“oh yeah… you’re right.”
“everything will be okay.”
heptagon chuckled. “i get the impression that you’re also trying to convince yourself of that.”
“p-perhaps i am.”
suddenly, origin appeared.
“origin!” circle gasped. “what are you doing here?”
“well, i…” origin mumbled. “möbius strip got angry at me and told me to go back here…”
“cuz you saved my guts,” heptagon said.
“let’s go!” triangle cheered. “screw möbius!!!”
“good on ya, bud!” oval nudged origin.
origin giggled. “yeah, he’s pissed off at me now. i think you’re all right about the elimination thing, that he’s been trying to cause the most tension possible with it. square wants to win now, so möbius wanted him gone.”
“what a jerk!” rectangle exclaimed.
“mhm,” parallelogram nodded.
“does this mean you can decide who’s in the finals?” trapezoid asked. “after all, tomorrow, you can just bring anyone you want here…”
“in theory, sure,” origin answered, “but i doubt möbius strip will let me get away with that again… also, unless there’s some huge reason to pick one over the other, it isn’t really fair for me to decide.”
“is it fair for möbius to?” droplet asked.
“fair point…”
“hey,” pentagon piped up, “if you’re here, how will we see today’s challenge?”
“...i guess we can’t? sorry guys.”
“aw darn!” triangle groaned. “it can get pretty boring in here.”
“she isn’t wrong…” heart conceded.
“but it’s not like you’re always watching a challenge,” origin pointed out. “are you always bored when you’re not? i thought, um, we just hang out and stuff.”
“well yeah, sure,” rectangle said, “but today’s the semifinals. today we were all anticipating something exciting, and now we don’t have it… so we’re even more bored than usual.”
“hm…” origin thought for a moment. “what, do you all want to do some proofs?”
“you call that exciting???” pentagon cried.
“yes!” rhombus replied eagerly.
