MY WAYS ALIGN WITH ASHES

The forest floor never reached me until I got down on its level. Two autumns ago, it occurred to me that I'd gotten too far off the ground, misplaced the beauty of what happens near the dirt. The mushrooms are doing their greatest work right now, getting ready to break down the dying season. Their fruiting bodies escape the earth, releasing spores for another generation coming. They reside on the scale between animal and plant, and sometimes I wonder if they'll remain content with their lowly position. One day, perhaps, they will inherit the earth. I, for one, welcome our new fungal overlords...
