[TW: rape, non-con, dark]
There's something about stray dog's behavior that speaks König to me.
He'd been kicked around, ridiculed, and left on the cold pavement alone. He had no real house, and had to beg even for a scrap of food. Those were the factors that forced him to grow teeth way earlier—and sharper—than he's supposed to.
He'd held the bitterness in his heart, causing him to despise the weak, the poor who couldn't stand up for themselves. The perfect replica of his past self.
He hated seeing them, he'd even go as far as 'taking care' of them. Letting them know that no one would help them, no one would come to the rescue. Just like what people did to him back then.
He recognizes his contribution to the vicious circle, yet he finds himself helpless as he's unable to break free from it.
Perhaps that's when God decided to punish him for it.
There's a mission that required him to work together with the other team, and met with the reprisal for his bad deed, in the form of a medic.
He didn't spare a glance at her, didn't acknowledge her existence, until she defended her patients in front of him.
One of the missions went wrong, causing the soldiers to be injured by gunshots and a grenade. It was theirs to blame, because they didn't pay attention enough, but she shouted at him, telling him if he'd given them a deserved break, it would've been avoided.
He, of course, was angry at her.
He told her she didn't know anything, that she's hindering the mission. But she didn't flinch, even when he growled at her.
It frustrated him, because even his glare would send his soldiers running. Yet it didn't work on her. The people who's not afraid of him are usually those in power, but she isn't one of them. She's just a mere medic.
He tried to kick her out of the team, but the higher ups told him that there's no one available for her replacement. He also tried to make her quit, but what he did came back around to him, as he received a penalty.
It stresses him out, to the point that he'd overwork himself to distract him from his thoughts.
One day, a bullet passes through his heart and lungs, causing him to collapse on the spot.
In daze, when his consciousness slips in and out, he thinks how he could've easily avoided it. But his body wasn't listening to him, delaying his feet to move back.
In what feels like months, he opens his eyes for the first time after the incident.
What he sees, is a pale light on the ceiling, and a blurry figure by the bed.
And there she stands, just like the angel of mercy.
She doesn't say much, except for telling him to rest, and that he's lucky he survived.
She tells him the same thing for days, before he can muster two words out of his mouth.
Shut up.
And strangely, she smiles.
"Seems like you've recovered well." She responded, "Welcome back."
She continues to nurse him, despite his snarky remarks that she easily deflects. She takes care of him with patience that should've withered away from the moment she joined the army.
It shouldn't have bloomed in front of him.
For the first time in his life, he feels the weight of his guilt on his chest. He could've been kinder, could've been softer, and he would've broken the cycle just like she did. But he chose to nurture his anger—just like his father, and his father's father.
Then again, she could've gotten it easy from the start. Though in his heart, he knew it's just an excuse for his behavior.
The day he's permitted to work again, he left without saying thank you.
At night, he wonders if she'd come to hate him as well. No one would blame her if she does, but deep in his heart, he hopes she doesn't.
Since that day, he has followed her like a lost dog. But he would turn his head away whenever she looked at him.
Sometimes he scoffs at himself for thinking about injuring himself, just so he could receive her care. Yet he couldn't help but panting at her feet, lapping up every little conversation they made. He wants to surrender himself to her, letting her put a collar around him and call him hers.
And it's all because she showed just a little kindness to him.
On lonely missions, or lonely nights, he often imagines what they could be. Living in the suburbs, white fences, and kids. The picture perfect of the marriage.
Until it all shatters on the ground.
It's not his intention to eavesdrop, but he couldn't help but lean in when he hears her voice. She sounds happier, as she shows her friend the ring on her finger.
So he bares his teeth,
And bites.
(One time, her uncle had to put down their dog
Because he bit his children for no reason—
Other than jealousy
He heard the dog whined
on the cold table,
alone, and scared
As the vet slowly pushed the poison
Into his bloodstream
And God, how cruel is it
To put a heart inside of a beast
When all his life
He only knew
How to bite?)
He pants as he presses himself into her, causing her to whimper, as her voice is long gone from screaming and crying.
She must've had no idea of what's coming to her when he called her to his office. The scratches and bruises on his body were enough proof of her gullibility, that she came to him, unassumingly, and trusting.
He had her bent over his desk, smothering her easily with his body as he forced himself into her. She was a fighter, but not strong enough to defeat him.
He had lost his inhibitions, as his back arched for the eighth time, spilling his seeds into her.
And she's lost as well, as her eyes were unfocused, and all her energy had been zapped from her body.
"Leave him." He said, as he drove himself into her once again.
She lets out a high-pitched moan when his cock stretches her open again, filling the room with sticky sounds.
"Leave him and love me instead." He said for the second time, and she cried in pain when he buried himself too deep.
"Love me," He sobbed as he pulled the ring out of her finger, knowing fully well he couldn't replace it without twisting her arm. "Please love me."
Her tears flood her cheeks as she watches him discard the ring from her, before latching his mouth onto her shoulder. Marking her with another bite, drawing yet another blood with his teeth.
He knew she had closed her heart the moment he slammed her on the table. He knew she wouldn't come to love him. But if he's not loved by her, then no one should.

“IT’S OKAY, SPIKE!” Kara shouted, flying alongside the panicked dragon. “Easy, easy boy- OOF.”
An unwitting thrash of the dragon’s tail sideswept Kara in the air, causing her to tumble as he continued to rip ahead.
“Supergirl,” came Lena’s voice in her ear. “Are you still there?”
“Yep,” Kara said, halting her fall to the Earth, surging back up into the sky and heading again towards the dragon. “Have you figured out why he’s upset yet?”
“We detected a disruption in spacetime. If he freaked out during Crisis last year, he may be sensitive to-”
“Another crisis?!” Kara said, nearly caught up to the dragon.
“Unlikely, Brainy is investigating the cause.”
Kara didn’t respond as she finally flanked Spike’s side, shouting words at him in an attempt to soothe - not that it was working all that well.
“Have you tried beef jerky?” came an amused voice behind her.
Kara startled, rotating in the air to see another figure, flying just a few yards away. In the dark sky, she could make out a… woman, a white supersuit, a red cape, short-cropped light hair. It was mid-turn that Kara realized there was a small bag hurling in her direction. Kara instinctively reached out to grab it, seeing Original Beef Jerky on the label.
“Who are you?” Kara shouted, glancing back up.
“You don’t recognize me?” the stranger smirked.
“Should I?”
“My name,” the blonde said, “Is Kara Zor-L.”
-----------
It didn’t take long for Spike to calm down after that. A couple of bites of jerky, and the dragon amiably landed on the ground, seeming to physically shake off his nerves before shrinking back down into a peaceful iguana. Alana was relieved to have her pet back.
Kara eyed the new blonde warily, but this other Kara didn’t seem concerned. “I’ve been dealing with a brainwashed Legion member,” the other woman explained. “He threw me out of my universe. I need to get back there.”
“So the multiverse is back,” Lena said over comms, listening on to Kara’s conversation with… Kara. “Bring her to the Tower, Brainy and I can try to help her.”
Kara looked up. “Alright… Kara,” she said awkwardly-
“My Earth name is Karen,” the blonde responded.
Kara nodded. Thank Rao, this’ll be less confusing. “Alright, Karen. Let’s get you back to the team.”
-----------
“So you’re… Power Girl,” Lena said, eyeing the much older kryptonian. “And you were able to grow up on Krypton?”
“It’s a long story,” Karen said with a shrug. “When do you think you’ll be able to send me back to my Earth?”
“Just a few hours,” Lena said. “Brainy’s making some equipment modifications.”
“Looking forward to getting home,” Karen said. “Cat will be annoyed.”
“Wow,” Kara said with a laugh. “Different timelines, but somehow we both work for Cat Grant.”
Karen tilted her head towards Kara as her brow crinkled - Lena couldn’t help but think of how strangely familiar her expression was. “I suppose she would be a little old for you,” Karen mulled.
“Old?” Kara asked.
Karen smirked. “Cat is my wife.”
“Oh,” Kara squeaked, as Lena's heart skipped a beat.
-----------
“That’s not suspicious to the press at all?” Lena said. “You and Cat living on opposite sides of the country?”
Conversation had wandered - from Karen’s Starrware Labs and her development of environmental nanobot technology, to her superhero antics as Power Girl, to her marriage. Lena hadn’t missed how Kara’s cheeks turned bright pink with the mention of Karen’s love life, and how she took every excuse to duck out of the room to check on Brainy’s progress.
But now Kara was back, and pacing, and nervous - and somehow that only seemed to amuse Karen.
“We’re good at privacy,” Karen said. “Though I’m opening a branch of Starrware Labs in National City, so soon this’ll be less of a pain in the ass anyway. It’ll be nice to be able to attend Carter’s baseball games without suspicion.”
“Carter?” Lena asked. “I guess Cat was previously married on your Earth, too.”
“The media went nuts when we started dating,” Karen smirked. “America’s Power Bisexuals. Ironic headlines, considering they don’t know I’m Power Girl.”
“You’re bi,” Lena asked curiously, noting again how Kara seemed flushed.
Karen shrugged. “Bi, pan, whatever. Sexuality in Krypton’s society was considered fluid.”
“What?” Kara said, confusion overriding her new shyness. “That sounds like Daxam, not Krypton.”
“What’s Daxam?” Karen asked.
Kara stared at Karen for a moment. “I’m… going to check on Brainy again,” she said, making her way out the room.
Lena curiously watched after her, before turning back to Karen - who seemed to be far too amused at what was transpiring. Lena shifted in her seat, another curiosity coming to mind. “What’s my life like on your Earth?”
Karen shrugged. “You’re a powerhouse. Married to another tech genius, some Jack guy. It’s rumored you’re in an open relationship, you spend a lot of time with the Obsidian CEO.”
“Oh,” Lena said.
“Is something going on between you two?” Karen asked Lena, gesturing at where Kara went through to the door.
“No.”
“Do you want something to be going on?”
Lena was going to rebuff, the words of course not ready to fall from her lips. But something stopped her. Maybe the familiar crinkle in the stranger’s brow, maybe the fact that the blonde was imminently about to leave the universe entirely. “I don’t think that’s a possibility,” Lena said regretfully.
“Why not?”
Lena shrugged. “Kara’s straight in this world.”
“Are you sure?” Karen said, her eyes seeming to dance with the almost familiar smile, last observed when Kara convinced Lena to buy an entire tub of ice cream. Lena couldn’t help but laugh, as much as the reality of the situation made her heart ache.
But before she could formulate a response, they could hear the patter of footsteps coming back. “It’s ready,” Kara said, nodding in Karen’s direction. “Brainy says you can go home.”
-----------
Karen departed for her Earth - and normalcy resumed, as Lena and Kara crashed on Lena’s couch, consuming their late dinner from Chinese takeout containers.
Lena looked over at the blonde, who seemed… still unusually quiet, seemingly pensive. “Is it odd?” Lena asked gently. “Hearing about a different Krypton?”
“Yeah,” Kara said, pulling her legs up onto the couch. “It makes me wonder…”
“Wonder?”
“She’s just… very confident,” Kara murmured, staring down at her chopsticks.
“She’s older,” Lena shrugged. “Seen more.”
“I think even if I were a decade or two older, Cat would still eat me alive,” Kara smiled.
“Maybe,” Lena laughed.
A pause. “We’re… similar in other ways,” Kara said softly.
“Oh?” Lena said, her heart skipping a beat.
Kara shifted awkwardly, finally glancing up at Lena. “I overheard something she said. Her talking about you and Jack. And… Andrea.”
“It wasn’t that surprising,” Lena replied slowly, her heart pattering as she realized that Kara might be… trying to assess the situation. Which gave her the bravery to be a bit more forthcoming. “Andrea and I were together in high school.”
“Oh,” Kara said. And for a moment, silence fell again.
“Lena-” “Kara-”
The two looked up, each noting that the other had a blush crawling across her face, each feeling the vibration of possibility flowing between them. “Could we…” Kara started. “Could we be more?”
“If you want us to be,” Lena said, a small smile growing on her face.
Kara’s eyes widened, before a grin crossed her own face. “I’d like that,” she said.
-----------
A month later, a small portal temporarily opened up in Karen Starr’s office. She didn’t notice at the time - she was far too busy making out with her wife - but she did find the note left behind:
“You were right. Thank you. - LL”

Crossover Shenanigans: Korrasami and Supercorp
Korra and Asami stand in front of a strange purple portal. Korra: You know, I'm a little relieved I'm not the reason for this portal for once. Asami: True. Mako: I don't think it's safe to mess with it. Maybe stay here? Asami: How will we be able to determine where it goes? The best way to test a hypothesis is through an experiment. *proceeds to tie the rope around her and Korra's waist and then spools it around hte pulley-crank system she's built. It's several hundred meters of rope* So all you two have to do is keep an eye on this. If the rope is tugged three times, then crank us back. Bolin: *digs into his bag of cookies* Easy enough. Mako: *sighs dramatically* Don't yell at me when this goes badly! Korra gives him a thumbs up, takes Asami's hand, and enters the violet portal. A brief moment of weird stomach-churning nausea hits them, and then they enter a large white room. Two people stand behind a counter with strange devices that Korra and Asami have never seen before. Asami: Wow. That looks like a fancy typewriter. *Points to the keyboard with a strange square attached to it, that looks like a very thin mover screen.* Brunette-and-very-pretty-woman: Who the hell are you two? Korra: Hey! That's not very nice! We're explorers. Investigating the new portal. I'm Avatar Korra. *jerks her thumb at Asami* and this is my super awesome girlfriend Asami Sato. Asami: *blushes* Do you have to introduce me like that every time? Tall-muscular-blonde: Oh, hey! Great to meet you! I'm Kara Danvers, and this is Lena Luthor! *grins and holds out her hand* Asami stares at it for a long moment. Korra rolls her eyes and shakes Kara's hand. Asami bows instead. Lena: Okay, so nice to meet you, now go back through so I can shut this down... Asami: Wait, you made this? How did you make it so small? When Korra made a spirit portal, she energybended a massive explosion, which ripped open the fabric of reality... Lena: What is energybending? Asami: Oh, it's something only the Avatar can do. She manipulates energy in people or the environment. Lena: So she manipulated a massive explosion to create a portal? That seems a very destructive way. *gestures to the portal behind Asami* I built this using Nth metal, magnetic coils, and... Asami: *whips out a notebook from her jacket* What is Nth Metal? And magnetic coils? That's actually a brilliant idea. I've been experimenting with those lately. . .
Kara and Korra watch as the pair dive into an intense conversation about electromagnetics and engineering.
Korra: Yup, that's Asami there. My girlfriend.
Kara: Yup. That's Lena. My girlfriend.
Korra: Huh. So what can you do? I can bend all four elements and metal! *shows off by waterbending the water from Lena's glass, then uses airbending to boost herself upward briefly, and bends stone around the room* Lena: Would you please put my water back in its glass? Asami: It could short-circuit the electronics. Korra: Whoops. *Drops water carefully into glass but then bends the metal bar that's lying on the table into a knot*
Kara: Okay, but that was really awesome. So, as Supergirl, I can do this. *Flies into the air, shoots lasers from her eyes, then lifts up half the lab with one arm.* Lena: Kara, please, if you're showing off, do it away from the portal. *turns back to Asami* So you're saying, you build a powered suit using pistons, hydraulics, and platinum? Are you sure its platinum? Because the hardness and tensile strength you described sounds like titanium to me. Asami: You know, maybe that's what it's called here. Let me show you. *proceeds to draw the chemistry diagram for the metal*
Lena: Fascinating. That's definitely titanium.
Korra: I bet I can beat you in a fight.
Kara: No way. I could beat you.
Lena and Asami: If you're going to fight, take it outside please.
Lena: I'm also filming it. *Reaches over and picks up a round ball and then proceeds to type something into her keyboard. Asami watches fascinated as the ball rises into the air and follows Kara out of the room and onto the porch area of the lab* Asami: Was that a tiny mech? Lena: Robot. Asami: Wait, so what powers it? I've struggled with decreasing the size of batteries due to... Korra unhooks herself, cracks her knuckles, and follows Kara outside. MEANWHILE IN AVATAR-VERSE: Mako: Why did the rope go slack?
Bolin: OH NOES. Do you think they got eaten?
Mako: Bo, by what? *his eyes widen* Oh no, they could really be in trouble then.
Bolin: We go to save them! But we need someone to man the ropes for us.
Mako: Let me radio Jinora. *picks up the portal radio* Jinora? Can you send some help to the new portal?
Opal and Jinora soon join them. They agree to man the ropes while Mako and Bolin head into the portal. MEANWHILE ON EARTH-38:
Mako and Bolin exit the portal and stare in shock at Asami standing by a brunette, while Korra and Kara battle outside. The walls are transparent, and the fight is intense.
Bolin: Asami! We're here to save you! *puts up his fists*
Asami: Wait what? No! Korra and I are fine.
Lena: Who the hell are you two?
Mako: So you're not about to be poisoned or something? *has fire blades ready in his hands*
Asami: NO! Lena here was chatting with me about the technology here. Korra is just sparring with Kara. Lena, that's Bolin and Mako, our friends.
Bolin: Oh. Do you have any snacks? Because I got to see this.
Mako: *sighs* whatever.
Lena: *grumbling but opens snack cabinet and tosses food at Bolin* I hope no one else comes through. I still need to calibrate... Asami: For the calibrations, do you have to manually type commands? Lena: Actually, no, I write code for that. Asami: TEACH ME.
Mako and Bolin sit down with their snacks to watch the increasingly intense fight. Korra has all four elements and is in Avatar state while flying in the air. Kara is blocking all the attacks using invulnerability and trying to get close enough to do a right hook.
After several minutes, Jinora and Opal rush through the portal.
Jinora: Are you all okay?
Opal: Woah, nice place.
Lena: What the fuck is with you people?? Go home! I can't turn off the portal with y'all here!
Bolin: Can't! Got to see who wins!
Jinora: I apologize for the intrusion! I'm Jinora and this is Opal. We were worried about the brothers.
Asami: Here's some snacks. Korra is battling Kara to see who is stronger. *gestures to the windows* I think it's an even match so far.
Lena: *scoffs* Kara is obviously winning. She's invulnerable to all of Korra's attacks. She also has the ability to fly, and her laser vision can easily incinerate most of what Korra fires at her.
Asami: *laughs* So? Korra's ability to dodge with airbending keeps her a moving target. Kara has yet to land a punch. Also, the fire blasts, ice daggers, and stone spikes keep her on the defensive.
The pair fall into an argument into the science of their girlfriends' powers and how they may work scientifically. The argument ends up so heated that Lena finally throws up her hands in defeat.
Lena: FINE. Let's find out who wins then?
Asami: FINE. More snacks are needed though. Bolin eats enough for three, I swear.
Lena grumbles under her breath about insatiable eaters, while she makes popcorn for all of them instead using her bunsen burners.
Alex, Kelly, Brainy, and Nia burst into Lena's lab.
Alex: Are you okay? We heard about the invasion!
Asami: Invasion? We're just visiting.
Lena: Don't interfere! This is important research.
Alex: Who the hell are these people? *gestures to the Avatar-verse people*
Mako: Who the spirits are you? *jumps to his feet with his fire blades ready*
Bolin: We need more popcorn! *waves an empty bowl*
Nia: Did you say popcorn? Yesss. You're my new friend.
Opal: So you're all friends of Lena? *Opens snack cabinet and ignores Lena's glare at her touching Lena's things. Takes out snacks and tosses them at Jinora who hands them to the others*
Kelly: Yes. Don't tell me, she had an accident in the lab?
Lena: Not an accident! I might have unintentionally created a bridge to another multiverse that is directly parallel to ours per M-brane theory --
Asami: M-brane theory? Spirits, we're way behind. We just figured out quantum entanglement exists and how to build planes. Tell me all about M-brane theory please.
Brainy: I posit that if you tell her that could alter the trajectory of their world with dangerous consequences--
Lena and Asami: Shut up Brainy!
Bolin hands out more popcorn for the now TWO shows: Kara and Korra fighting still -- the fight has gotten more and more intense with no sign of either being able to land a significant blow on the other. On the other hand, Asami and Lena fall into an intense argument about physics, which is interspersed with yells at Brainy to stop interrupting them.
Brainy: Sharing this with a person of lesser technology may interfere with the time modality of their multiverse --
Lena: Brainy, if you don't shut up, I'm kicking you out!
Asami: It's not like I'm going to completely rebuild the entirety of all engineering in my world. I mean, I could, I am rich, and you know, that would be a fun project...
Lena: Ah, shaping society through money and technology. Sounds like me... *she trails off and stares at Asami*
Asami: Oh my spirits
Lena: Oh my god
Asami and Lena: ARE WE THE SAME PERSON?
Bolin: *throws popcorn into his mouth* Yup.
Nia: And those two fighting are probably the same person too.
Brainy: I calculate that the probability of two identical people from alternate universes could disrupt the time continuum-- Everyone but Nia: SHUT UP BRAINY.
Nia: *shoves a beer into his hands and pulls him down next to her* Shush, just enjoy the show.
THE END... FOR NOW?

To me, Dabi is still a loving person.
I know people like to say he doesn't care about the league, didn't care about Jin, or Toga, or Shigaraki, or any of them. But I don't believe that. I really, really don't.
I think he's cynical. I think he used to love so hard as a child because he did; he loved Endeavour so much, and that love was thrown into his face. It wasn't enough; it would never be enough.
So, I think he does love the league, but he doesn't show it because he's learned love isn't enough. Love wasn't what his father wanted; it wasn't what the league wanted (though it's what they got).
Does he see the league as a means to an end? As tools? I think yes, but again, he was taught that by Endeavour. Tools, if they are valuable, are loved.

[Randomising Sims 4 traits for alphas -part 1 - MHA]
Denki w/ a horse lover alpha
(forgive me for this, I'm not a horse girl 😔)
"And this," you said, gesturing proudly to the beautiful white horse in front of you, "is Buttercup. She's my pride and joy, decorated, skilled, the most magnificent being to ever grace this Earth."
"It's nice to meet you, Buttercup!" Denki said cheerfully, miming a handshake. "Please don't kick me in the ribs, I need them."
You shot him a light glare, gently stroking Buttercup's neck, "Buttercup only kicks people who deserve it, isn't that right?"
Buttercup snorted and pushed her face into your shoulder, seeming to be in agreement.
"That makes sense," Denki replied easily, sticking his hands in his pockets and gazing into Buttercup's eyes. "She certainly looks like she knows all the secrets in the universe. Tell me, Buttercup, when I walked in on Bakugou and his alpha, sweaty and red faced, and they told me they were working out, were they actually fucking?"
"Denki!" you said, scandalised. You covered Buttercup's ears to protect her from the filth, but it was too late. She tossed her head a few times and whinnied, her answer clear.
"I knew it!"
Midoriya w/ a self-absorbed alpha
"How do I look?" you asked, brushing down your shirt one last time in the back of the limo.
"Phenomenal, like always," Izuku said genuinely, all heart-eyed over you, just the way you liked it.
You hummed happily, "You're right, I'm a knockout." You sent him a grin as the car stopped. "Let's say hello to the press now, shall we?"
The door opened and immediately the flashing cameras lit up the dark evening and red carpet. Izuku stepped out first, bashfully waving to a few cameras before holding out his hand to aid you out of the car. You slid out gracefully, still holding his arm, and sent the paparazzi a dazzling smile.
Arm in arm, you both started walking. You knew for a fact that many other top 10 hero spouses had trouble navigating the fame on nights like this, but you? You relished it. Lived it. Breathed it. You shot a quick look at your husband and saw a polite smile on his face. You were better suited to it than the one who was actually famous.
A reported stepped over to you and you smiled invitingly. You wondered if you could figure out the exact right thing to say that would keep you on magazine covers for an entire week.
Izuku, clearly aware of your attentions, only shook his head, amused, and allowed the reporter to corner you both. Some of his fans had a problem with the way you wove yourself into his interviews, but you paid them no mind. Firstly, they were just jealous. Secondly, you knew full well that he preferred to not have to face the vultures alone.
You reached down and gripped his hand in yours, giving it a little squeeze. It really was the best of both worlds.

When your head's in the clouds (keep your feet on the ground) - Ranpo Edogawa x Reader
Also available on Ao3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/45151330 Getting anything done in the Armed Detective Agency was a struggle sometimes. Case in point. Across the room where you were meant to be typing up a report on a case the agents had recently finished, Kunikida was yelling at Dazai for a slew of complaints that had been lobbied at him recently, apparently for trying to jump off a statue of a historical figure downtown, breaking it and coming out totally unscathed. Naomi was attached to Junichiro's back, cooing as he squirmed in embarrassment and tried in vain to shush her. Atsushi was flailing his hands and protesting some edgy comment Kyoka had probably made (you weren't really listening, you tended to zone out whenever she spoke). With all of it combined, you could barely hear yourself think, let alone write the damn report. Just hang on a bit longer til lunch. you thought, rubbing your temples, the beginnings of a headache blooming. You probably shouldn't have skipped breakfast, but Kunikida was a real stickler for punctuality and you couldn't always guarantee he'd be distracted by Dazai's antics to sneak in without him noticing. And you were running late that day after somehow sleeping in, breaking your favourite bag on the way in and a bunch of other stupid little mishaps, so you weren't in the best of moods.
As you waited for the noise to die down a bit so you could concentrate, your mind drifted to your current obsession - the crime thriller novel you've been reading. You were about halfway through it now and the urge to just whip it out and start reading it in the midst of all this chaos was all too tempting. You'd even brought it with you because you'd taken to wandering around with it in one hand. You were planning to get through more of it on your lunch break.
"You know, my snack drawer is looking pretty empty right about now...”
Your eyes flicked in the direction of the singsong voice. Ranpo perched himself on the edge of your desk and you hastily grabbed it before he ended up knocking it off like a cat would. You wouldn't put it past him.
"Somebody really needs to put a bell on you," you said, rolling your eyes. For somebody who spent most of his time either inhaling candy and never putting on an ounce of weight or sleeping all day, he could be sneaky when he wanted to. "You don't look busy," Ranpo continued, and there was that famous lack of tact of his. "Why don't you take over Kunikida's shopping? He's gonna be busy yelling at Dazai for a while so you might as well." You sighed, which you'd been doing a lot lately. If anybody else had walked up to you and said that, you would have asked them who the hell they thought they were, but it's Ranpo so you let it go because you know he doesn't mean anything by it.
“I’m busy, actually. I’m finishing up a report that’s due by the end of the week.” You told him, then smirked. “Last time I checked, you have working legs. Why don’t you go if your snacks are so important?” “No way! I’d get lost if I tried to find the supermarket all by myself!” Ranpo protested loudly and you marvelled that a twenty-six-year-old man could announce that so freely and confidently. “And anyway, you’re not busy at all – you haven’t typed anything for the last fifteen minutes. Either you’re already finished and just don’t feel like going or you aren’t done and don’t know what to write next so you’re stalling for time.” You’ve seen him do it many times, but you still couldn’t help but marvel at Ranpo’s galaxy brain. He got all that from merely listening for your typing? “I- wow.” You said, closing your mouth. “Okay, fine, you’re right, I am stuck.” “See?” Ranpo smirked. “If you go on a supply run, you’ll get to stretch your legs and can come back to your silly report later. Maybe it’ll give you some fresh ideas of what to write.” It’s sound logic, if a tad bit manipulative given Ranpo made it sound like such a chore a couple of seconds ago, but Yosano, who had also evidently grown weary of all the racket, chimes in. “You might as well go,” she said, shaking her head. “You know Ranpo won’t leave it alone until he gets his own way.” “Nope!” Ranpo admitted with a cheeky little smile that made Yosano smile in response. “If you hurry you can even get back in time to finish that dumb book you’ve been carting around everywhere, even if it’s so obvious who the killer is.” “Wha-?” you blurted out, glancing reflexively at your bag you’d dumped on your desk earlier, where sure enough, a corner of your book is poking out. “You haven’t read it, have you? So how could you-?” “I skimmed the back of it when you went to get a drink earlier,” Ranpo shrugged, and a bubble of relief welled up in your chest. So, he hadn’t actually read it, he was just being dismissive like he usually was when something didn’t interest him. And then he added, “But even so it’s pretty obvious the best friend has to be the killer.” Your mouth fell open. “What?!” you spluttered in disbelief. “That’s- you haven’t even read it! You just admitted as much!” “But the summary says the main character gets the phonecall when the best friend leaves the room to talk to someone on her phone, right?” Ranpo replied, pointing at you. “That gives her the perfect opportunity to overheard everything being said and rush back in when the main character sees what’s in the garden and screams. She has a watertight alibi because she didn’t leave the house the whole time, she was with the main character. Why else would the book even mention when the friend was doing at all?” You’re speechless. As much as you wanted to ignore him, throw his deductions to one side because there’s no way he could know that – the problem is that he can. And it all clicked into place. Every scene from the book was suddenly thrown into a completely different, sinister perspective. Every time the friend offered a shoulder to cry on or was mysteriously absent from the goings-on.
Mystery solved.
Anger boiled up in you, so fast it was like a geyser erupting. Perhaps it wasn’t just Ranpo’s words, maybe it was a culmination of things – stress, frustration, whatever, but it was just so…unfair. You’d been so exhausted the past couple of weeks, that book, the now ruined story, was one of the only things keeping you going. Reading it was your escape from all the annoyances of daily life and occasional dangerous threat that came part and parcel with working for the Armed Detective Agency. Being able to observe a world as a neutral third party, up close and personal with the problems but only as a puzzle to be solved? It’s a luxury that your job, your life, rarely afforded you.
And Ranpo, because he didn’t care, because he never thought about what he said before he just blurted out whatever he felt like, had ruined all of it in one fell swoop. All he cared about was waving his vast intellect around, careless as a madman with a gun. “What the fuck, Ranpo?!” you yelled at him. He had the nerve to look shocked, as well he might – nobody in the Armed Detective Agency ever yelled at Ranpo and the only person who ever scolded him was the president. Even Kunikida deferred to his intelligence and had given up trying to reign in any of his other behaviours. You’ve certainly never so much as raised your voice at him before, no matter how much of a brat he can be. But… “What?” Ranpo said, like he honestly had no idea why you were angry, like your rage had come in as quickly and inexplicably as a bolt of lightning in a clear sky. “I was – I was looking forward to finishing that!” you shouted, hating yourself for how ridiculous you sounded – it was just a book, for god’s sake, but somehow you felt like something had been torn away from you and you couldn’t control yourself. “And you fucking ruined it, you had to spoil it and you don’t even care! All you care about is your fucking candy! You just-“ You broke off just as abruptly, suddenly aware that if you kept yelling like this, you’d start crying and that’s the last thing you wanted. Instead, you just grabbed your bag and ran out of the office with an inarticulate, “Ugh!” of sheer frustration. Ranpo stared after you, his mouth slightly agape. Slowly he shut his mouth, and stood up from your desk, arms limp by his sides. “…I didn’t mean anything by it.” He muttered; more to himself than anyone else. “Was it really not obvious?” Yosano sighed. Your reaction had surprised her, true, and she had no doubt that once you had a little time to cool off, you’d come back and apologise for blowing up at Ranpo like that. It simply wasn’t done in the Armed Detective Agency – Ranpo was the reason it existed at all and everybody knew that. And she knew how fond you were of Ranpo, it was hard to stay angry with him for very long. But even so, she felt for you too. It may have seemed like a small thing, but sometimes it’s the small things that felt the biggest in that exact moment. “She’ll be back.” Yosano assured Ranpo, and he looked up at her. “But in the meantime, I have an idea…” ~ Your walk and subway ride to the supermarket was something of a fog to you – namely because you were so busy fuming to really concentrate on anything else. Arrogant, inconsiderate…manchild! You knew you were being ridiculous – it was just a book and your reaction was out of proportion to the situation. It was simply the straw that broke the camel’s back. But now you knew you’d go through the day feeling flat and defeated. Now you’d just go scrolling idly through your phone or something and curl up on your sofa once you got home, without anything to look forward to. You could watch TV or play games or something, but…it wasn’t quite the same. And you felt kind of stupid for not realising such an obvious twist that Ranpo had discerned merely from glancing at the fucking summary, for god’s sake. It's not his fault he’s a genius. You reminded yourself, arms wrapped around your middle in some fruitless attempt at self-soothing. But he still didn’t have to say anything. He could have just let me enjoy it. Arguing with yourself proved to be a waste of time, of course. As you walked around grabbing things you were pretty sure the Agency was running low on (it wasn’t a perfectly ordered list like Kunikida would have had, of course, but that was too damn bad), you knew you’d already lost most of your initial outrage. You’d have to go back to the Agency with your tail between your legs and apologise to Ranpo. You knew you wouldn’t get one back, because he likely didn’t think he’d done anything wrong, but you did still bad for hurting his feelings. When you got back to the Armed Detective Agency, you were surprised to see it mostly empty. Maybe a job had come up, or people had gone to lunch after you stormed off. You sighed. If that’s the case you wouldn’t be surprised On your desk was a parcel, wrapped in brown paper. Puzzled, you picked it up – you hadn’t expected any mail today and you didn’t usually get anything delivered to the Armed Detective Agency offices anyway, Dazai was horribly nosy and would badger you to tell him everything about any item you got. A brief thought flashed through your mind that it could be something dangerous, maybe sent from somebody in the Port Mafia, but you dismissed it just as quickly – why would they bother targeting you over someone who is a genuine threat to them? It made no sense, and you didn’t think it likely anybody would be able to sneak past both the CCTV, Dazai and Ranpo. Slowly, you tugged off the paper. It was a book. A gorgeous, sleek, heavy paperback book. The pages were so new they were almost blindingly white under the office lighting and the cover had pretty silver filigree around the border. Smoothing your fingertips over the cover, which depicted a woman standing under a street lamp, her profile in shadow, like she’d heard a noise and turned her head to look at it just as the photo was taken. You turned it over and read the synopsis. A crime thriller? Realisation dawned on you and your eyes widened. The door opened and the Tanizaki siblings, Yosano, Kenji and Ranpo all came in, chattering amongst themselves. Yosano and Kenji saw the shopping bags and approached you with a smile. “Hey! Sorry, did you just get back? We wanted to wait for you, but you were gone a little longer than expected. Here, we got you a bento,” Yosano said, rooting around in a bag of her own and handing it to you – it was still warm to the touch. “Thanks,” you said, smiling as you handed Kenji the bags, knowing he’d insist on taking them to the kitchen, and he went off with a happy grin to restock the cupboards. “Where’s Dazai and the others?” “They got a call about a disturbance downtown. They’ll be back later, I’d imagine,” Yosano said, wryly. “Assume this doesn’t have the Port Mafia’s dirty fingerprints on it.” “Right,” you said, but your eyes drifted over to Ranpo, who was already tearing open a bag of gummy bears Kenji must have passed him on his way to the kitchen. Yosano got the hint and excused herself to her clinic, saying she’d better have it ready for when Atsushi inevitably came back with some life-threatening injury. You picked up the book and, taking a deep breath, approached Ranpo at his desk. He pretended not to notice your footsteps until the last second, even though you could practically see his ears pricking up. “Ranpo?” “What is it?” Ranpo said, and though his tone was dismissive, there was a catch in his voice when he spoke. You wondered if it made you a pushover, but his studied attempt to appear unaffected by what happened earlier tugged at your heartstrings all the same. You smiled and leaned down, pressing a quick peck to his cheek, which was pleasantly warm against your lips. Ranpo’s head whipped around so he could stare at you, the sun catching his open eyes and making the green of his irises sparkle like broken glass. “Thank you.” You said, softly, the words only meant for him. You held out the book. “This looks amazing.” “Yeah, well, it should do. I’m the one who picked it out!” he said proudly, trying to play off the faint hint of a blush on his cheeks. “That’s a way better mystery, even I had to look at the first few chapters before I had it all worked out.” You stifled a laugh, imagining Ranpo standing around in a bookshop, holding a giant paperback in his hands and flipping casually through it like it was his own personal library. No doubt he inhaled a few muffins from the coffee shop upstairs while he was at it. “And I’m sorry about-“ you began, hurriedly, since you figured it’d be more awkward for you both to apologise with a room full of people earwigging, but Ranpo waved you off. “Nevermind that. Hey, come look at this new case I’m working on!” You smiled, knowing he’d already forgiven you – he didn’t show his own personal missions to just anyone, and sometimes when he did he’d abruptly dismiss you again once something occurred to him or he just decided he’d told you everything you needed to know. But listening to him talk about them was always fascinating, so, still clutching your new book, you sat down in a free chair and scooched closer. “Tell me all about it.”

at the end of that path, is the Holler. At the edge of the Holler is best girl Stella's house. You're here for a funeral to figure out why there are so many damn Ditchlings around here. If you don't, it will be the end of the world

Before Kyoujurou became a Hashira, he would ask himself why he didn't grieve his mother.
Was it because he was ashamed of crying? Was it because he was afraid to do so?
Time seemed to move on and slowly the questions drifted like dry twigs washing down the Tama River.
One thing for sure, though, he hadn't changed.
Because he told himself that it was fine to not mourn his mother as long as he kept his promise to her.
Even Senjurou, who barely remembered Mother, became quieter and more anxious. Kyoujurou would cross it as a flow-on effect to Father's change in demeanor. Still, sometimes Kyoujurou could see it in his eyes, especially during the rare times they went out or when Kyoujurou, who was off-duty, picked him up from school and they would pass other parents picking up their children.
He waited as Senjurou just... watched his friends running to their mothers.
He couldn't blame it on them either.
But sometimes he wished Senjurou weren't as affected as them Father.
Like himself! He was still as happy optimistic. Still as loud. Still as hard-working as before.
He knew, Mother would be so proud of him.
No, Kyoujurou did didn't change.
.
.
Sitting in the lower rank, he used to think there were supposed to be a lot of missions. He was aiming to be a Hashira, afterall.
He had even sent Oyakata-sama letters about it. He had a trace of memory where Oyakata-sama's scar had not reached his left eye and Father took them with their best dresses to a banquet with the Ubuyashikis and they'd met before. The young man smiled at him.
But Kyoujurou still introduced himself through letters and to the previous Oyakata-sama's youngest daughters or Kagaya-sama's sisters during Final Selection.
Yet... every mission seemed to end too soon.
I need a stronger challenge.
I need a more elaborate mission.
I need to go somewhere farther than the capital.
Kyoujurou thought as he paced around the spacious halls of his home.
He stopped as his stomach growled.
Senjurou was supposed to be home by now and Kyoujurou agreed to not pick him up because he was packing.
Not that Kyoujurou needed to wait for his brother if he wanted to eat lunch sooner, but they had always eaten lunch at home together.
He decided to prepare the rice and side dishes. Dried fish and stir-fried green beans.
(Fume-obaasan from two blocks away, who was thankful to the Rengokus for their continuous contribution to protecting the neighborhood, had been the one who prepared their food from lunch to dinner every single day until Kyoujurou was 18. As both Kyoujurou and Senjurou were too young to use the kitchen and because Father had fired all the servants except Kakehashi-san who would clean the house and do the laundry and then come back home as soon as the sun reached its peak.)
Kyoujurou bit the tip of his thumb as he stared at the scrumptious food on the tray. He decided against eating them right away as he wanted to eat lunch with Senjurou.
He knew he'd already miss it in a few days.
He trained as he waited, rehearsing all nine Flame Breathing techniques. He didn't know how long he repeated the same move but his eyes started to shift to the other side of their yard.
Cascaded by the keyaki tree, was Mother's flower corner.
Shrubs of hydrangea, chrysanthemum, and whatnot. Kyoujurou didn't know all the names but they sure were pretty.
Bordered with heavy stones, the soil seemed dark and fluffy.
The wind blew cool air and Kyoujurou dropped his wooden sword, slowly sauntering along the dry dirt and entering the grassy area. Each step fitted into bald trails, that were sized like his zori, to the front of the sweet-smelling "altar".
Father had stopped caring about a single thing, but he had paid Kakehashi-san good money to keep this corner healthy and well-taken care of.
Kyoujurou was sure of it as Father wouldn't know how to garden or would be stable enough to learn and keep doing it for a pretty long time.
Kyoujurou sat on the thinly trimmed grass floor.
He reached for a red pheasant's eye, careful not to clumsily pluck the fragile head.
He closed his eyes.
As zephyr caressed his hair and stung his ears with the after silence, Kyoujurou let himself fall to the side.
He curled both legs, just slightly, and let his hair cushion the ticklish yellow grass.
When the wind rustled the leaves, Kyoujurou breathed out with it.
The hand that cupped the bud fell mid air, reaching into nothing.
But he could feel it somehow, from the tip of his fingers to the top of every standing hair on his skin.
He could stay there forever, melting into the yellow bed. His hair was already incognito.
Mother would laugh at that, he thought.
The wind chortled, sending wispy petals of blues and whites. Kyoujurou could feel them, on the surface of his uniform, like delicate frail fingers tickling his shoulder and hip.
A memory swam behind his lid. Of mother brushing fallen leaves off of him, then taking one and fiddling it under Kyoujurou's nostrils.
Kyoujurou continued to lay there, even as the sun shifted and pushed the shadow further from Kyoujurou's face.
But Kyoujurou didn't mind, as the heat seeped into his being. He pulled his hand back, letting it fall to the side of his face.
Just like this Kyoujurou wished he could melt, into the apparition of his Mother's embrace.
.
.
Kyoujurou didn't grieve the way Father did, but having the time to lay there for a while was enough for him.
He couldn't cry. But he would find dark stains on the dry dirt when he woke from the not-nap.
It took him until he became a Hashira and he couldn't do all the things he could do before to admit that he had been grieving Mother, just in his own way, and even as he told himself he was not that obtuse he knew he had been...
Protecting and protecting himself from his own thoughts.
That afternoon, he crumpled the letter he had finished writing to Oyakata-sama, throwing them in the trash.
During lunch, Senjurou glanced shyly at him. Kyoujurou was sure, at some point Senjurou knew what he had been doing because it was not the first time he had found Kyoujurou lying in their yard, unmoving, and it always concerned him even after seeing Kyoujurou acting as usual.
So, Kyoujurou had to pry the words out of him.
He ended up asking if Kyoujurou had gotten ready and if he was really going up north with the other big boys?
The previous stress he didn't even know was feeling, came back like a sore in the neck.
For several days, he had been hiding his frustration. Planning and unplanning to travel to Noboriretsu. He was tagging several Tsuchinoe-ranked demon slayers, some he had never met before and hadn't even told his superior about it.
No, he planned to tell his superior after he hopped on that train.
But then, as he stared at his brother's solemn face, he realized that the stress had melted.
Kyoujurou exhaled before smiling wide, shaking his head.
"No, I'm staying for dinner."
.
.
Kyoujurou didn't need to change.

sea, swallow me
[König × reader]
TW: drowning, trauma, mention of death, obsessive thought
Tumblr media
When you're drowning, you could only hold your breath for 30 to 90 seconds underwater, before you couldn't help but inhale the water. Survivors—like himself—would describe the burning sensation in their chest, a violent rejection from the lungs as the water filled in instead of air. Then, quiet. Quiet and calm, as they slip out of consciousness.
But the tranquility is only brief, before your own body jerks up, awake, and coughing out the water.
By the time you realize you're still alive, you know that the worst is yet to come.
Surviving the torture was easy, but what was left of it would be enough to turn a person into a deadman. Because the mind is unforgiving, the mind remembers it all.
At night, when it's supposed to be a quiet one, your mind would conjure up the memory of it. One by one in hazy details.
And for him, the cost of surviving was heavier than death.
Still, it doesn't mean he hated the water. It did nothing wrong. Nothing wrong except for the fact that it ended up in the wrong place inside his body.
(It's a wonder how a misplaced thing could cost you your own life
Just like how a stray cell destroyed his mother's brain)
He tried to ignore them—the creeping darkness from the corner of the room—but it's no avail. It always finds a way to disturb him.
Sometimes he saw it in the form of analogy; an unsuited soldier would always ruin the whole team, or a mistyped word would cause the documents to be invalid. But recently, the depiction of it became clearer as he returned home.
His village is nothing like an ordinary one. It was supposed to be a beautiful one, but the civilization moved too fast, and it forced them to keep up. Now what was left of it is a ghastly mishap between modernity and staleness.
Yet, in the middle of the bleakness, there was Blume.
She was the aberration of the gloom, the deviation from the somber faces that surrounds her.
For him, she's a flower that grew in the middle of the battlefield. She shouldn't have existed, yet here she was. A misplaced thing.
Wherever she went, the sun would follow behind. Lighting the path that she took.
He didn't like her, and he'd leave whenever she's present, just like the darkness that's chased away from the light.
That was, until the fateful day, when she arrived at the front of his door, holding a jar of yellow marmalade.
"Do you remember me? Your mother was a good friend of my ma."
She said it as she handed him the container,
"She told me to give you this. It's an apricot jam."
At that moment, his breathing came to a halt.
(God is the cruelest creature
Tempting Its mortals with purity
As if it's within their reach)
He couldn't do anything but stare, and she took it as the exit point.
"Let us know if you need anything."
With that, she left the doorstep. Leaving him in the darkness once again.
It took him a few seconds before he could catch his breath.
For the first time in his life, he felt a greater fear clutching his heart in a tight grip—something that's more primal, more ancient than the fear of death.
Yet the fear didn't come alone. It bought fascination and curiosity into his mind. Poisoning him with an obsession for the mystery.
(A mystery that took after her face)
She was an enigma, something that he couldn't solve. He could tell a soldier's weakness over a glance, but with her, he wouldn't even know the meaning behind her smile.
Whenever she smiled—whether it's aimed at him, or somebody else—he'd tense up, as if his head had been submerged underwater.
At night, he'd lay there, thinking and overanalyzing the small talk they made at the market, ruminating over and over again, to the point of madness.
It'd follow him to his dream, where he'd see her among the sea of people. And he'd follow her, despite the muddy ground on his feet. Sometimes the people around him would drift away like the usual crowd, but sometimes they stared at him, with their milky-white eyes.
Dreams were a good teller for what transpired in his life. The odd looks from the people around him, and the unashamed attitude of the voyeur—watching him as he walked with her.
There's time where he wished he could grab her arms and shout,
You're not supposed to be here
You're not supposed to be near me
But the image of the crowd, with their white eyes, would haunt him. So he swallowed back the knife, and let it hurt him instead.
(He'd even cut his own hands to keep her pure
Untouched by the ugliness that's him)
She was oblivious to it, blissfully unaware of her surroundings.
He didn't understand it, until he realized the attention they gave was pointed at him.
He was the water in the lungs—the strange bird in a flock.
(Should he walk into the fire
So he'd be cleansed from the impurities
That were latched on his body?)
Still, she'd look at him, as if he's something of a human. Something that didn't resemble a grotesque, misshapen creature.
And he'd cry if she ever touched him, with the same tenderness that she showed to a mere beetle.
(She gently placed her hand on a leaf, letting the bug crawl out of her finger until it reached the familiar place.
Gods, if no other beings could rival your mercy,
Then she must've been one of you)
He'd crawl into her hand if she let him—basking in the warmth of the sun during the long winter—until he withered away.
Alas, the summer had to pass.
At the dinner table, he told her goodbye. One day earlier than he was supposed to.
And she chuckled, rubbing her neck as she looked at the window.
"That's too bad, I'm just beginning to like you."
He stopped at his track, not believing what he just heard. He'd pretend he didn't listen, if their eyes didn't meet.
"Liar." He said.
"It's not a lie." She told him, "I do like you."
"Kiss me then," He replied to her, "If you're honest."
And she did. She kissed him earnestly.
(For a moment, he thought he'd die
With his heart hammered against his chest
—Pleading to be freed, to be spared from the horror
Of loving and leaving her
Before it turned silent)
The tenderness of her lips left him too soon, that he almost fell on his knees, begging for another blessing he didn't deserve.
(It was too much, too much
He didn't deserve it, didn't he?
But what should he do
When he himself was ravenous?)

The Scary One
"You set me on fire!" Bucky exclaims, poking at the burn hole in his shirt.
"I'm really sorry- I swear it was an accident. Can I kiss it and make it better?" you coyly offer, giving him your best doe eyed expression.
"Don't give me those puppy eyes, you set me on fire!" Bucky repeats in disbelief.
"What the hell?" Clint asks, watching the two of you walk into the conference room.
"We were training," you meekly explain. "Things got a little out of hand."
"A little?" Bucky guffaws, eyes comically widened at your definition out out of hand.
"You two were training - together?" Steve asks, then turns to you, "Are you alright?"
"Me?" you gesture to yourself.
"She set me on fire," Bucky reminds everyone. "Does no one care that she set me on fire?"
"I care," you offer, taking Bucky's hand. The two of you take your seats side by side in the conference room.
"Just look at the face," Wanda pokes at your cheek as she moves to take her own seat. "She wouldn't hurt a fly."
"Not a fly. Me!" Bucky exclaims.
"Aww... Come on, I said I was sorry." You reach over, gently pulling Bucky down and pecking his mouth. He sighs in defeat, already having forgiven you. He's mostly been teasing you, but now he's a little irritated at everyone else's reaction, or lack thereof. "And in my defense, you shouldn't have been training in the first place. Your side is still healing."
"Yeah, I'm sure adding third degree burns is going to help my side heal," Bucky sarcastically remarks.
"Okay, one: It was an accident. Two: if you hadn't noticed, I've been kind of on edge since you were stabbed. And three: I just barely set you on fire. It hardly went through your shirt," you add, studying the burn hole on Bucky's shoulder.
"You got beat up by a girl," Sam chuckles.
"You know behind those doe eyes and sunshine- she's the one you all should worry about. And I'm sure those guys SHIELD picked up from our last mission would agree."
"Her?" Tony asks, watching you fiddle with the Rubik's cube Bucky gave you earlier in the day. Your eyebrows furrow as you try to figure out how to fix the singular mismatched block. With an idea, you try to peel off the sticker to swap the two of them out. "We're supposed to be scared of her?"
"You're so dumb sometimes," Clint teases, watching you carefully peel off the sticker.
"If you want to live to see another day, Clint, I'd stop running your mouth," Bucky threatens. You gently pat Bucky's shoulder to remind him to ease his reaction. "Sorry," he grumbles to Clint.
"Oh yeah, she's the scary one," Clint sarcastically mumbles.
"You know what? I'm tired of this. I'm not the scary one in this relationship. And I'll prove it to you," he declares. "FRIDAY, play our last mission."
Then the video starts playing:
"What's the bad guys name?" you ask, handing Bucky a parachute that even though he claimed he didn't need one.
"I dunno. Why?"
You shrug. "It'd be nice to know their name. Maybe we can ask them nicely for the weapons back."
"You know, you have a lot of great ideas. This- it's not one of them," Bucky quips.
You playfully stick your tongue out at him. "Fine, then I'll give him a name. Zurg. Zurg sounds like a bad guy name."
"I'm shaking in my boots," Steve chuckles.
"Just wait," Bucky huffs. "Let me fast forward a little bit."
You two are on the boat, both fighting the surprising amount of crew on the small utility boat. You've both nearly fought your way through the crew, when you hear Bucky loudly grunt in pain. You turn around and see two things: Bucky clutching his bloodied side and his arm missing. Your gasp turns into something akin to a glower as you look Bucky's arm on the floor. "You took off his arm!"
"Ohhhh..." Bucky taunts, though you can hear the strain in his voice. "You messed up."
With one large swipe of your arm, the few remaining crew are knocked into the ice cold water. You pay no attention to the yelps as they hit the freezing water with no way to climb back on the boat.
"I'm going to need you to put the gun down and let him go," you furiously demand, the ridiculously buff bad guy holding Bucky in a tight headlock with a gun pointed at his head. The only reason the man got the upper-hand on Bucky in the first place was an underhanded knife to Bucky's side. And now, you were livid, just barely holding yourself back from burning everything down.
"Go home, little girl, before you get hurt."
"You should really listen to her," Bucky insists, noting the anger building in your eyes.
"I'm not going to ask again. Let him go or else," you grit, your fists tightly clenched.
"Or what?" The bad guy laughs, infuriating that much more.
"Or I'm going to burn this ship down. The entire ship down," you state so plainly that it's chilling. "Now let my boyfriend go."
"You're bluffing. You'd kill us all," the man sneers, tightening his grip on Bucky.
"Am I? Are you really sure you want to take that bet?" you rhetorically ask. "I wonder how long it would take for all those weapons and missiles to explode...b ecause I'm thinking that this entire thing would blow before you could even try to jump ship."
The man visibly pales, his eyes flickering between you and the flame burning in your hand.
"I can save the two of us. Can you say the same for yourself?" you cooly threaten, rolling the small flame between your fingers.
"Told you," Bucky mutters, looking oddly proud of your angry outburst.
"You wouldn't," the bad guy replies.
The small flame in your hand grows even larger. "You really want to bet on that?"
Bucky pauses the video triumphantly, feeling as though he's proved his point. "Told you. I'm not the scary one."
"Aww...she wanted to save you," Wanda coos.
"I give up," Bucky grumbles, throwing himself back into his seat.
You gently pat his hand. "I don't think you're scary."
"Hold on," Tony interjects. "I thought you two said that you weren't able to recover anything from that mission."
"We weren't," you guiltily mutter, averting your eyes away from Tony.
"But all the weapons were still intact in that video?" Tony points out, now staring you and Bucky down.
"And your point is?"
Tony pinches the bridge of his nose, slightly shaking his head. "Please tell me you didn't blow up an entire boatful of weapons with people still onboard."
"Okay," you agree, slightly nodding your head. "I won't tell you."
"I'm sorry, you did what?!" Sam exclaims.
"In my defense, I left them on a raft."
"You left a dozen arms dealers on a raft in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean?"
"Well, SHEILD picked them up, and they were all fine- mostly," you cheekily assure them. "And honestly, they're lucky I left them the raft after they stabbed James. I had to stitch him up myself! And talk about cheap shots, they took his arm! Not cool. Not cool at all."
"This is why you two aren't allowed to go on missions alone," Sam comments, crossing his arms and shaking his head at the two of you.
"Nah, I still don't see it," Clint remarks, watching you closely. "I still say Bucky's the scary one."

I have no idea why I wrote this. It just refused to let me go until I finished it. EXCERPT:
The cat slept on a bench, and this one looked almost like a tiny leopard. She sat down next to it, held out her hand, and not to her surprise the cat woke up to climb into her lap. She snapped the picture, amused.
Lena: Mission Unsuccessful. However, I found this cat on a bench. [image attached]
Just Kara: OMG. IT LOOKS LIKE A TINY LEOPARD. YOU MUST KEEP IT.
Lena: Kara, I am not adopting a cat.
Just Kara: FINE. In penance give him extra kisses for me!
Lena: As you wish.
The next cat encounter happened right before the defeat of Obsidian and Lex’s plan. Lena had been walking the streets exhausted but unwilling to go to her penthouse. Lex had definitely caught on that she switched sides, and she no longer felt safe anywhere. Instead, she had walked to a hotel not far from the Tower and considered her options.

I can’t explain how much Miracle Aligner fills me with joy.  To me it invokes mixed feelings. I believe it’s about “what would you do if you found a man that could give you everything you’ve ever dreamed of?”.
In many ways.
As in, one cannot have everything they wish for, since getting everything so easily is not the way those things will make you happy. It’s about not being greedy, in a way.
But there’s also some hope in there, I can’t quite explain. Given all the Milex shenanigans we’re all familiar with, maybe it’s a song about a forbidden love between them, I don’t know if I’m going too far on that one.
Maybe it seems too good to be true. Maybe they want to chase each other around.
It’s so incredibly sad, but full of hope and so so so beautiful.
I heard it for the first time on a particularly hard time and it just hit all the right places. From the gay uncle dances, to the absolute musical masterpiece the song is, (honourable mention of Miles’ low, almost inaudible, but INCREDIBLE vocals on that song, I’m really in love with that)... I don’t know they just seem so happy to be silly and comfortable around each other and doing their own thing and reminds me of the good things in life, I suppose.

GDQ Run of Full Spectrum Hero
"$15 donation from 'Twunky Kong': 'Always love watching Genders Done Quick.  Great cause, and I look forward to seeing you destroy a classic today.  Good luck.'"
"Are we all set up?"
"Yup."
"Then next up we have the Glitch run of Full Spectrum Hero, done by FloLikeWater," says the announcer, and things go a bit quiet.
"You wanna kick this off?" says one of the people on the couch, "maybe share a bit of the theory of the run?"
"Uhh, yeah," says the person sitting on the chair out front.  "Basically, we're gonna break things completely during character creation, by exploiting the way the math works.  Time starts now, by the way, and ends when I get to the win screen."
"Right, and the math is?"
"Okay, so- This is me, as you can see -gender is basically stored as an 8-bit unsigned integer, which is just a fancy way of saying it's 0 to 255.  And it’s a major mechanic.  The problem, though, is that the way it's designed, even though it can be 0 to 255, it's only supposed to be 0-15, with a bit in another variable tracking masculine or feminine."
"So, most of the possible numbers aren't even used."
"Exactly! Yeah!  And what's 'acceptable' for you is mostly calculated based on the number you have in that range, as is aggro calculation.  So, okay, first critical point; during character creation, you have to take an extremely low gender value.  Now, for this run, I'm going to set it to 3, because that actually makes the next trick way easier to pull off, because it makes the frames easier to time.  Now we're just gonna key in some default values for the rest of this; it doesn't really matter for the run.  Then, we actually have to break things, and I'll let the couch explain this while I try and get it to work."
"Yeah," says one of the people on the couch, "so basically, this is a really trick you can do when selecting your gender.  That neat little graphic that shows what level you have and switches between them isn't actually just for show.  When it depletes, the number is actually going down."
"Gah.  Yeah, this usually takes a few tries."
"The thing is that the trigger for it to switch and start going up again is that it causes an underflow.  So, basically, because it's supposed to be 0 to 255, if you try to tell it to be -1, it becomes 255.  And that's what causes it to start going back up.  Now, normally that doesn't matter because this happens in a matter of milliseconds, but if you pause at just the right instant-
"Got it!"
"Yeah, like that, you can actually save and quit, and when you reload, it doesn't remember that it's supposed to be counting back up."
“So right now, we are at the theoretical maximum Masc value of 255, about 16 times as high as it’s supposed to be.”
“The Masc-imum, if you will.”
“Boo!”
“Everyone’s a critic.”
“We can’t actually change any more stats or it’ll notice we’re way out of bounds, and it’ll reset us.”
“Okay, and you want to give us some context for what a 255 does?”
“Well, it causes some major issues for normal progression.  Normally, you want your Presentation to basically match your active Gender.  The problem is, uh…  We’re working with numbers that are too big for that.  There literally aren’t presentation options at this level.  The reason you want to match is that higher Deviance cause aggression from NPCs.  Normally, a Deviance of about…  10?  Is enough to cause hostility.  If you go above 25, you’re basically going to max out aggro.  We’re sitting at around 240.”
The audience laughs.
“Yeah.  So, with very few exceptions, we’re in a cage match with the world.  Battle Royale, baby.”
“With the exception of your mother.”
“Mhm.  I kind of skimmed over that there, but yeah, she doesn’t have an aggro state.  She ‘aggros’ at 0, but it doesn’t do anything because she’s your mom and she loves you regardless.”
“Something the world could do with more of.”
“Agreed.  And, now that I’m outside, everyone’s aggro. So, we’re gonna be doing a lot of dodging, because I don’t have time to fight.”
“So what’s our goal?”
“Well, eventually, we want to get to the Strictured Castle and beat the Grand Enforcer, but we actually need to get geared up first, and that’s why we’re running towards a shop. A specific one.  You want to explain?”
“Yeah, sure. Basically, the shopkeeper we’re looking for loves manly men.  Like, he’s got items that scale with masculinity, and he gives you discounts the higher your gender is, if it’s Masc.  He’s going to attack us on sight because we’re at 240 deviance, but there’s a trick you can do while an area’s loading in; basically, it takes a second for aggro to take effect, and you can open the shop interface in that time.  And, because our Gender is 16 times bigger than it’s supposed to be…”
There’s laughter from the audience.
“Yeah, those numbers aren’t supposed to be that low.”
“So, we’ve got items we shouldn’t have yet, available for $1, which is not how that’s supposed to work.  And the best part is, uh…  He doesn’t change sell-back value?  We can actually sell these back to him for more than we paid in the first place, so I’m going to do that a couple times so I can stock up on supplies.”
“Besides supplies, we’re going to pick up the unique gear, which in this case is the Man-o-war badge, the Projection-M, and the Scroll of Toxic Masculinity, as well as some non-unique gear.”
“All three of them key off of your Masc value, and we’ve got a really high value there.  Toxic is usually bad in normal runs, but the Max HP % damage doesn’t matter because the only fight we’re going to get in will be over by the time it would matter. Altogether, we’re doing about… 8X what a normal maxed-out setup would deal?  At level 1?”
“It’s completely absurd.”
“Absolutely absurd.”
“Now, for my next trick, we’ve got another sequence break because of the underflow.  Basically, the Strictured Castle is right near the starting area, but there are guards at the gate who don’t let you through to the loading zone.  They’re pretty hard to aggro without attacking first, and they’re never supposed to chase you.  Their ‘chase’ aggro level is at 64 Deviance, which is double what’s supposed to be achievable, since the most you’ll get is Gender 15 one way, and Presentation 15 the other, which puts you at about 30 Deviance.”
“But we’re at 240.”
“But we’re at 240. So…”
The crowd laughs.
“Oh, and you’ll love this. They just sort of…”  Laughter.
“Yeah, they aren’t supposed to move, so they don’t actually have an animation for it.  They just float towards you menacingly.”
“And I should probably clarify, the reason we need to aggro them is because they actually have a damage cap right now.  You need to drink from the Chalice of Freedom to uncap the damage, but uh… That’s gated behind a lot of story progression we don’t have time for right now, so we can’t just kill them and walk by.”
“Yup.  And with that…  Alright! In the Castle in good time.”
There’s scattered applause.
“Most dungeons force you to do some puzzles but this one’s straight into the boss.”
“And the good news is that you don’t have a damage cap here.”
“Yeah, he’s not coded to have one because you weren’t supposed to be fighting him while it was there.”
“We’ve got three phases, and they’ll go quick.  Do you want to count them down?”
“Alright.  With me?”
“Three!” and the audience gets the picture and shouts along.
“Phase done.  Skip cutscene, and-
“Two!”
“Nearly got hit, but that’s another phase.  Time ends after the next phase.”
“One!”
“There’s like 3 seconds of monologuing here which-  Time! Which normally gets you some chip damage, but we’re doing a lot of damage.”
The crowd applauds.
“So, I’ve got a minute or two, right?”
“A bit, yeah.”
“Great.  So, I just wanted to say that I’m really happy to be able to bring this to GDQ this year.  I think Full Spectrum Hero is one of those things we’ve all heard about but most of us have never tried.  It’s old, it’s clunky, it lacks a lot of nuance, but it was also extremely formative in the genre.  If you follow the normal progression, it’s really surreal to recognize that so much of what we expect these days actually looks a lot like what’s already there in this. I really love it, even despite its flaws, and I’m really glad I got to share it today.”
“Alright!” says the announcer.  “Well, we’ve been glad to have you here.  Next up...”
