- About me

Hello, this is Rei (I've been called Hellcifrogs, Hellci, Rei, Ray, Ffreire, Frogs, and I accept all of these.). I'm 27 and my pronouns are they/them (I don't really mind he/she's)

- About NaruFox

So I recently I got back into my teen obsession: Naruto. I took the chance to read the manga again with new eyes, and started doodling many fix it ideas until one day Naruto came out with fox ears and all this AU came to life.

Right now (as I post the end of the chunin exams) I have all the way to the Pein Arc planned. I also know how I want to end the AU already. Drawing it all is what will take time. (June edit: I've finished planning it and I'm about to start post shippuden soon!)

If you've read what I have out, by now you realize I change a lot of things and as the story goes forward there'll be more and more changes. A big one is: There won't be the war arc in NaruFox. If you want to know how I'll include something from this part in the AU, I probably won't.

- About Ships

I plan to have NO ships in the NaruFox. Not even my personal favorites. Yes, because I’m too old for ship wars, but mostly because that’s just not my focus for the AU. I am totally fine with you tagging the posts you find cute as the ships you like and see, but officially there won't be any romance.

Naruto ships that felt canon to me: SasuNaru, InoSaku, KakaGai, ShikaTema.

My personal favorite ships: InoSaku and KarinSaku, NaruHina and SasuNaru, Sasusai and SasuKarin, KakaGai, TemaTen and GaaLee. There are probably more, if I find it cute enough I'll ship it.

- About Boruto

Please don't. I will not answer anything related to it, since I have no interest or knowledge about it.

Also, I love MadaGai but I would never write them. Or read them even. I only like them in theory, if that makes sense...

(And yeah, making a list of ships I like for all Naruto characters would be impossible. There's too much and many more I never even thought of but would ship if someone were to bring it to my attention.)

I'm not sure if (m)any of these answers will be interesting at all, because apparently I have a bad memory for ships apart from the ones I made fanart of myself, and I haven't read a lot of fanfic for a long long time.. But I've attempted answering these questions anyway!

What ship were you completely obsessed with as a teenager, but now you don’t care about anymore?

I didn't ship much as a teen. I liked the Marauders gang from HP a lot as a kid, tho, likely even in a shippy way. Obviously HP has left a really bad taste my mouth.

Which ship would you consider your first one?

It was probably a HP one, I was properly obsessed with Sirius, James and Remus for a long time, but like I said, I have a hard time telling when I started consciously shipping characters.

Your first fanfic was about which couple?

Hinata and Naruto and it was baaad. I guess it was maaaybe kind of cute, but it was not good.

Do you remember the first couple you saw fan art of?

Not at all. The most likely options are anyone from HP, Death Note, or InuYasha, but it hasn't stuck with me.

Have you ever gotten into ship discourse?

Nah, the closest I've gotten was the time I got put on a blacklist (or two?) for a shipping Yamato and Sai. I didn't care and so didn't address it, until someone sent me a (kind) message about it. I then explained my feelings about the problematic aspect and the (few) responses I got were 100% positive.

Did you used to have a NOTP or have one currently?

There are plenty of ships I don't particularly like, but I wouldn't call them NOTP's. Except maybe the very very popular ones. I only take real issue with ships that become canon, like a fair few Naruto pairs..

Who were the last couple in the last fanfic you read?

Reading has been hard the last couple of years, so I haven't done much of it.. But it has to have been a Dreamling fic - I'm so excited you've been writing again, TJ 💖

Currently, do you have any OTPs?

MatsuMasa, although they're not my otp in the literal sense. I like them both with Yaichi, and Matsu (non-romantically) with Ume - and the fun thing is that it works all at the same time 😎

Is there any couple that, to this day, you are extremely mad about not getting into?

Hmm well I'm kinda mad at not being as into Dreamling as you are, TJ. I like Sandman and Dreamling! Very much looking forward to the second season and I enjoy the things you blog about, but it's never been more than a general appreciation. And that's fine, ofc, but it's always been such a joy to be excited by the same things as you haha

Is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they’re kind of interesting?

Maybe KakaGai? Only I didn't dislike it, just didn't consider it. And I don't think it's kind of interesting, I deeply love it.

Do you have any ship that, in the past, would have been considered normal but now you would be cancelled over?

I already mentioned YamaSai, but there's also ShisuItachi. Some people say that the latter is incest. It's been too long and I don't remember their specific relationship, but afaik they're not (direct) family, just from the same clan. Can't get too bothered about family trees in fiction.

Kikyo and Kagome from InuYasha is by some considered gross as well, comparable to incest, because Kagome is Kikyo's reincarnation?

Idk, is FjorClay problematic, because Caduceus is canonically aroace? I feel like it's not a super popular ship anyways, but I still like them a lot. In a queer platonic way.

What is your favourite crack ship?

I don't think I have one. Although I wonder if JonGerry from the Magnus Archives could be considered crack ship? They aren't from different fandoms, but they only met once after Gerry had already died. And then at Gerry's request, Jon sort of killed him again. It doesn't really count as a crack ship, but this is my answer anyway

What is the couple you read the most fanfics about?

Hm, I don't know! The last time I really obsessively read them was in my Naruto era.. So who knows - KakaGai is a very plausible answer.

What do most of your ships have in common?

I guess I most commonly like pairings with a Gentle Giant™ (preferably kind of dumb) and someone grumpy and/or cynical and smart and/or skilful. MatsuMasa, BeauYasha and ShikaChou come to mind.

What do you absolutely hate in a ship?

Hard to explain. Wrong vibes lol. Look I can appreciate love-hate or even hate-hate relationships as much as the next shipper, but there needs to be at least some level of respect/consent/two-way-street? I still dislike SasuSaku, because they very much have none of that from what I remember. They've always been close to a NOTP and then they became canon so..

~Fanfic Things I Wish Were Canon~

(1) Sakura being with (almost) anyone other than Sasuke

Pretty sure most people who've been following me for a while know this, but I don't like Sasuke and I'm deeply unsatisfied with Sakura ending up with him in the end. I think he's a terrible husband and father, and Sakura deserves so much better, as does Sarada.

I personally ship Sakura with Lee, Gaara, and Tenten, but almost anyone else would have been fine - Sai, Ino, Kiba, Shino, anyone but Sasuke (and Naruto).

She doesn't deserve someone who disappears for ten years and doesn't bother to write, call, drop in, or even make an effort in any way to maintain the relationship, causing your own child to develop the Sharingan purely from the trauma of her father not being around.

Ok I'm gonna stop before I go on a million page rant.

(2) Kakashi and Guy being canon

Conversely, y'all know how much I adore KakaGai. <3

They're canon in my head and in all of the stories I plan to write about the Naruto universe. They're just so sweet and fun together. They've got an incredibly strong bond that spans decades, showing each other sides that no one else gets to see and supporting each other through good times and bad.

I just want them to be canon so bad.

(3) Neji living

Not sure I have to explain this one, but I will anyway: It pisses me off so much that Neji died during the War. He deserved better. (Hiashi should have been the one to die.)

(4) After effects from the Infinite Tsukuyomi

I've touched on this before, but I firmly believe the Infinite Tsukuyomi messed with a lot of people's heads long after the War ended. I would have liked to have seen more exploration with people dealing with after effects, especially since the ninja villages explicitly open mental health centers after the War.

(5) Literally any development for Choji and Karui

Shippuden: Choji and Karui exist Boruto: Choji and Karui are married with a kid

How, when, and why? These two seem like they would be a fun and adorable couple to watch develop, and they literally give us nothing. I want to know more about how they happened.

We all know you're gaalee's #1 fan and that you like nejiten but do you have any thoughts about nejilee? I think most people who like it are really into kakagai's eternal rivals spiel but. Idk. Neji and lees dynamic wasnt really allowed to developed due to SOMEONES choices in killing off characters but i don't think even if neji lived they would have become close the same way kakashi and gai are.

Lol, I wouldn't call myself their #1 fan, but I'm definitely up there in terms of obsession.

I LOVE KakaGai and I love the eternal rivals concept as a whole, but Neji*Lee doesn't scratch that same itch for me? Lee is pretty dissimilar from Gai, appearance aside, in that he needs a lot more encouragement and is more prone to his own phases of darkness. Whereas Gai is canny (and not stupid) but genuinely optimistic and very intrinsically motivated ... he doesn't let other people get him down the way Lee does, because of Dai's influence.

Lee is more sensitive than Gai, and Neji can definitely be very cutting. I see that dynamic as different from Lee and Gaara's because, while Gaara insulted Lee at first, he got checked pretty quick and had a clear respect for Lee's power even if he didn't like him. Whereas Neji continued to put Lee down even when he was at peak performance and trying his hardest. I definitely think they make a fine pair of rivals, and as Neji softened up I see them developing a sibling-like bond with Neji being a person Lee aspires to be like, but as a romance ... eh, it doesn't work for me. I think the fact that Neji externalizes his anger through insults makes him a poor match for someone whose self worth is as relatively fragile as Lee's.

That's not to say that there's anything wrong with the ship, and if you do ship it, go on with your bad self. It's just not for me.

What’s your favorite Naruto ship and what draws you to it?

oh, but they're so many 😩

first of all, canon or non canon? the ones i'm the only one who ships it or the popular ones? romantic or platonic?

let's go by parts.

i'm really into nejiten (neji + tenten) now. i know they're not technically a couple, and most likely only really good friends, and yesterday i read a post talking about how they're not a good match because they don't add anything to each other, and i agree in parts, but i also love how they're just comfortable with each other, how natural it seems, how they take care of each other, how much the believe in each other, everything is just so reciprocal. even if the clan wouldn't allow them to get married or whatever, and if they did she would have to change her whole self (which i believe she wouldn't), she is strong, he is strong, they don't need each other, but the choose to be together. idk, it probably doesn't make any sense, but i LOVE them together, there's something about them.

and i also love naruhina (naruto + hinata). "oh, but Hinata is so submissive, she's so weak, she's ridiculous blablabla" yeah, ok. Hinata is strong, ok? she's STRONG. and i know it was kinda obsession, but i love how she was always there for Naruto, loving him, believing in him, defending him, ever since the beginning. and my boy deserved the love! he made friends along the way, but all of his friends didn't believe in him in the beginning - quite the opposite. and she's constant. she trains to get stronger - and yes, ok, Naruto shouldn't be her inspiration and all, because she had deeper issues going on with her clan and she being the heir should do something about it, but hey, naruto is a great inspiration! and they are so good for each other! and then she has the choice to be home and take care of her kids, and i know that's "oh, that's so weak, ridiculous, feminism much?" but it was her choice - she finally had peace and gave my boy peace and a loving family. i'll defend them, fight me!

itasaku (itachi + sakura) as well - i just KNOW she would save him. i do like sasusaku for a number of reasons (specially because i love sakura, fight me), but the whole older brother thing gets me. perfection.

also kakagai (kakashi + gai) because their friendship is probably my favorite in the whole show, i love them too much for my own good and i wish I had a gai in my life.

another (weird) one is deiino (deidara + ino). LISTEN, BEFORE JUDGING, i would NEVER take Ino away from Sai, they're perfect together, but i kinda ship deiino because they're aesthetically perfect, but realistically they would never be together, they would kill each other in 20 minutes. i just love looking at the pictures 😩

and finally, but not last, sasunaru/narusasu (sasuke + naruto). i mean... come on! i don't even have to explain. kings of angsty.

Listennn most canon Naruto pairs are of the tell-don't-show variety but Rin was ACTUALLY IMPORTANT to Obito, even if I believe it was more of a childhood crush turned into an unhealthy fixation than True Love., nd what really sold it to me was that it goes both ways!! Rin always cared about Obito a whole lot and showed it! I KNOW that the picture of her relationship with her team we get is skewed because it's basically all through Obito's eyes (Kakashi didn't pay much attention before Obito's death and we never get Rin's PoV as she is dead and a girl in a shonen series) but I really got the idea that Rin was closer to Obito. We're TOLD she liked Kakashi but when did we SEE it? In action? Obito touched her life more on the personal level simply by being there. The bar is low but by god. They're cute. I'm unwell about Obito Uchiha also

I was never a fan of Kakashi and used to see Gai as like a funny little man. Tumblr opened my eyes to HOW good of a guy (lol?) Gai is and HOW important they both are to each other. Their rivalry isn't onesided like I once foolishly thought and neither is their friendship. Give me those 30-year-old ossans I like them

Chojikarui kinda. You already know why that is shjfsfhj I'm just happy Choji has a love interest and she's such a BOMBSHELL. A BABE. SOLID 10/10. And personality-wise such an interesting pick for him?? Kishimoto I am chewing on rubber and banging my head against the wall TELL ME HOW THIS HAPPENED!! Definitely better in fanworks, though I don't know what we even know about their canon relationship as I refuse to touch Boruto. But the POTENTIAL... Give me a spinoff starring the Akimichi family (the short manga of Chocho looking for her "real dad" 🙄 doesn't count) and I just might abandon my principles (as I known to do occasionally)

Why am I encountering so many KakaGai comments online that confuse fanon with canon materials?

Ever since Konoha Shinden anime adaptation came out in 2019, KakaGai has been gaining popularity. In fact, about 80% of KakaGai fanfiction on AO3 were published post 2019. And I can see why. It's one of the healthier ships for Kakashi in my opinion and there are a lot more canon interactions as Gai is officially designated as Kakashi's close friend. Konoha Shinden itself is a pretty fun read and while the original Japanese made me squeal about how Kakashi and Gai are friendship goals, the English translation...well, gave off a different vibe that is good shipping fuel I guess. Let's just say the English manga also made some translational choices that made me go...ok (Gai definitely did not say "that's MY Kakashi" for example. In fact, reading the English translation definitely made me reach for the Japanese version because I couldn't believe that's in the original text. Let's just say there were some important nuisances that could not get translated properly as well as some stylistic choices that I wouldn't have made).

Anyway, what that means is that inadvertently I am seeing KakaGai fan comments on more platforms everywhere, from Reddit to Quora to YouTube comments. Again, nothing wrong with staning your OTP. But WHY are most of their comments filled with fanon being passed as official facts?

The biggest one is obviously the one where Kakashi and Gai live together. Apparently it is all based that panel in Chapter 700 where they are sitting together at an outdoor patio.

Or that in Konoha Shinden novel Mirai compared them to her parents. Yeah, no, Kurenai was not mentioned. The so called comparison is "if Asuma is alive would he be more like Gai or Kakashi?" I get that Konoha Shinden novel was not released in English but there is a fairly decent fan translation floating out there that is easily searchable.

Even the Shinden trip itself is being framed as "they take vacations together" versus it's a mission under the cover of a vacation. In fact, the novel revealed that the "nostalgia trip" Kakashi mentioned taking with Gai in chapter 700 IS the Shinden mission.

I've also read so many partial representations of the actual context when trying to make a point of Kakagai being "canon", such as "oh, Gai can't wait to go to the bath with Kakashi" (the communal public bath btw) when it's really about Gai being afraid of ghosts, or the old married couple comment from Mirai which was clearly an comedic metaphor about their slow walking speed.

Is this just a case of the echo chamber effect and no one cared enough to actually read the actual materials? I don't mind anyone shipping OTPs but shouldn't you at least verify your sources and context before you spread something as fact? It's frankly straight up irritating to come across at this point (the "fanon being passed to canon" thing, not the ship itself).

Let's see... I'm a pretty normal person when it's about likes and hobbies. sorry if it's too long but like...

but before, my dni list (gahhh it made me uncomfortable just writing this): Proship. NSFW (suggestive content is a bit okay if the character is not a minor or a real person). Pedos/Lolicon. Zoos. My hobbies are: listening to music for hours straight, playing videogames, drawing, writing if I'm inspired and learning languages, right now I'm trying to learn Japanese, but since kanjis are hard I'm having a little break.

Random facts: I'm 14, my birthday is on May 21st. Christmas is my favorite holiday, it makes me feel comfortable and very happy. I love making friends and meeting new people, but I'm a bit shy so starting a conversation is hard, if you want to be my friend, you start the conversation, please, I promise I'll be thankful. I like Haikyuu, I like Haikyuu a lot, it's my favorite anime, I just haven't finished watching it yet, sorry, I just watch Haikyuu when i feel too miserable to even stay alive.

random headcanon gai is a cat person more than a dog person but hes also wildly allergic to cats. you would think because hes loud and energetic hed be more of a dog person, but this is not the case. he doesn't dislike dogs ofc, kakashi is his best friend rival etc etc + he loves pakkun, but hes a cat person. big cats especially. hes a turtle person overall, though, obviously.

unpopular opinion ACK...UHHHH. i dont know. i get really uncomfortable with specifically romantic fics or art or stuff where it's all just like. kakashi is in pain and suffering, and gai is taking care of him, you know? like. a relationship should be reciprocal...that is arguably the most defining feature of their relationship since gai characterizes them as rivals!!! people who compete, and through their competition, better each other... obviously gai cares a lot about kakashi and would lay down his life if he thought it would help kakashi, but a lot of times i worry abt it sliding towards the fantasy of a partner who is also a caretaker, and that makes me like. desperately uncomfortable. i don't think it's like. a problem to make or find comfort in that kind of content, because like there's a reason hurt/comfort is so popular, and there is obviously nothing inherently bad about wanting to be helped! or wanting to help others!!! it's just like. ack. sometimes on a bad day it skeeves me out, personally. gai should be on the receiving end of care and attention from kakashi too—and we know kakashi isn't good about that kind of thing. but like. gai is also his best friend. he makes an effort.

hahah well TJ.. as you know you've been very influential when it comes to ships - especially for Naruto. First one that comes to mind is KakaGai, but there's also YamaSai and KankuSai and ShikaCho. All of them I still love <3 Also, thanks to you I shipped GaraShir before I even watched the show. And there are just countless ships from other fandoms that I'm not (really) a part of that I have a soft spot for, because you sell them so well :))

I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?

Errr I guess you could say HP? But that's not Tumblr's fault - all it did was share the messed up things Rowling said and did and gradully all of the moments HP got tiny kid me through rough and lonely times started feeling like a very big lie and I can't even think of it fondly anymore.

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

Oh gosh, so many, but let's go for Fjord from Critical Role. All the little and big steps he takes towards learning to accept himself throughout the campaign and the way they don't come all at once but are spread out over like a hundred plus episodes, including inevitable steps backward. The strength it took for him to walk away from the one who gave him conditional power and to accept unconditional love that is extended by his friends and the Wildmother. His arc just makes me so emotional and happy every time I think about it. I love him and I love his journey and I cannot wait to see it animated.

M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.

Yamato from Naruto seems like a perfect friend. He's kind and loyal and usually a reasonable, level headed person who can calm you down in stressed situations. But he's also someone you can have fun with!

N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).

For Saraiya Goyou: 1) anyone other than me making stuff for it lol. Usually I don't mind it so much, but sometimes I almost desperately wish I would see the tag update and it's not something I made. 2) drawings and fics from the past are mostly for Yaichi and Masa. I'd love more art and writing for other characters and pairings (romantic or otherwise) 3) sneakily shared fan translations of the prequels and spin-offs would be great lol. They're never going to be translated officially, but scans are taken down immediately as well. I bought Futagashira but I have no way of reading it unless I learn to read Japanese myself ^^;

O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?

Shuffle produced Pulling Teeth by Green Day. "I'm all busted up, broken bones and nasty cuts, accidents will happen, but this time I can't get up." That's definitely Meg and Zagreus from Hades. They beat each other up on a regular basis lol and I was so bad at this game in the beginning I got Zag killed by her a lot (sorry Zag..) Not top 10 ship for me, but I like them well enough!

U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.

1) Matsu from Saraiya Goyou: during my first reread the manga, after I learned that he loved Yaichi, I fell in love with him through his subtle and heartbreaking expressions. That's when I really got to know and understand him more. I love that he's charming as can be for his job, but doesn't know how to behave around his friends. He's so skilled and he knows it, yet has such a low self esteem. He's just a highly skilled, very pathetic little grumpy guy that deserves all the love in the world. And I give him as much as I can. 2) Caduceus from Critical Role: perfect, big, chill cow man who has the best advice and calming words for others, but can't recognise his own problems, let alone how to deal with them. He's so dumb and wise and I love him. 3) Gerry from the Magnus Archives: he's one of those people that seems to be full of contradictions. He's so bitter and stubborn and impatient and crude, but in a way that feels friendly? His life was so full of grief and horror from the moment he was born and he just wants a break from it all, but at the same time he can't stop himself from helping people who are about to fall - or have already fallen - victim to the horrors. The fear and defiance he lived (and died) with is heartbreaking and admirable.

I feel like if the TMS!Au was canon, then the poor SukeGai fans would be in such disarray lol, imagine if goes like how sanna says and they don't reveal that kakashi is sukea until boruto XD then during the entire blank period between the end of shippuden before the making of boruto, Shippers would be freaking out on whether their ship will remain together 'Cuz dammit creator! Don't think anyone didn't notice the extremely hinted unresolved romantic tension between Kakashi and Gai!' and most of them are just praying that Gai stays together with the weird but cute photographer lol while some of them are guilty of liking both SukeGai and KakaGai XD

Imagines everyone's surprised delight when they finally reveal the last unmasking reveal no one even knew was supposed to be unmasked. XD

It would be so beautiful. I'n sure some people would guess it, but seeing it made cannon? Knowing that SukeGai and Kakagai are both cannon cuz Sukea IS Kakashi?

How I feel about this character: I love him. His a very interesting character and he has a very cool and unique(?) character design. Very recognizable.

All the people I ship romantically with this character:  Naruto, Kakashi, Suigetsu, and some other character they're more of crack ships and just fun things I don't have to think about.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: NaruSasu can be a nice friendship when written right, Team Taka, Itachi and Shisui with Sasuke would be cute.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I feel like many people write him as cold and uncaring. He isn't he is expressive and he cares about those close to him.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: He either revolutionized the system or he got to travel with Team Taka.

My unpopular opinion about this character:  I know some people would have wanted him to raise/take care of Naruto (and, sometimes, Sasuke) but I would not trust him with a child. Even less a traumatized child. Would Kakashi keep them alive? Yes. Would he meet their emotional/affective needs? No.

Kakashi is a good shinobi. But I don't think he'd be a good caretaker.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: IDK. Maybe, if he were to still become hokage, I would have liked him to change the system, even if just a little. I would have liked him to see Sasuke and free him from prison.

Shisui loves reading fanfictions, even the most strange ones. Itachi and Kakashi honestly don't know how he can read some of the disgusting pairings without throwing up XD

Kakashi would love it if Shisui stopped sending him the pairings where his character is with his students or his teacher. Like, dude no. i do not want to know about this. Send me another one of those Kakayama fics. 8mll even read an Kakaobi. Obito is right here, he’ll get a kick out of it.

Itachi thinks it’s all a bit weird, but he does like the fics with him and some of the other kids his age. Hw finds it interesting when he’s shipped with Sakura even though they have never met in the show.

Gai collects all of the Kakagai things. he has so many files on his computer it’s ridiculous and he loves them all.

Shizun is sad to see she’s being shipped with a lot of dudes, but she’s bi so it’s not all that bad. Also she gets to eat Rin out before bed tonight so at the end of the day she wins either way XD
